She is not perfect, but she does understand the command. However, remote SIT is not going well. Bubba really struggles to SIT still, even for a few seconds. I had to be reminded that Bubba is a chocolate lab. Chocolate labs tend to mature much slower than blacks or yellows, and Bubba is proving that to be true. Given this, Bubba will probably need some more maturity before I can expect too much from her on obedience. Well, let me rephase. Bubba knows the HERE command but still struggles to respond to it consistently. This is a huge source of contention for me, but again, Bubba is a chocolate and is very immature. A halt on retrieving Up until now we have been doing retrieving daily with Bubba, but as she enters the fourth month, we are increasing aware that she will be teething very soon. Because of this, we will be stopping retrieving until we can confirm that all her adult teeth are in. This concerns a lot of owners; they are concerned that their puppy will forget how to retrieve or will stop wanting to retrieve. We have never had this happen. When visitors came to my home, he charged them, barked uncontrollably, and tried to bite them to make them go away. He actually bit Garrett in the leg! He was overprotective of the house and yard. He stood watch at the window waiting for something to approach so could bark and make a fuss. He used to jump up and hit the bird cage to make noise and watch the birds flutter. After working with Garrett, I feel Mikey has improved and will improve even more with time. On walks, I now have more control. I am able to redirect him to focus on me by backing him up, and changing direction in which we walk. I use my crutch to redirect him. I am more aware of potential problems and take action to avoid them. I can remain calm and have more control of him. He still needs work in this area but I know what to do. In the past I was told to feed him to keep his attention but this was only reinforcing his troublesome behavior. When visitors now come to my home, Mikey is told to go to his place, sit, and down. He is learning not to charge the door. He has started behaving successfully with visitors. I have completed exercises with him by rigging the doorbell and having friends enter. The exercises have been working. I can catch him more quickly and keep his excitement from escalating. He is less aggressive to the birds and is learning not to get over excited and bang on their cage. Garrett has emphasized the need to remain calm, use hand signals and speak softly and this is working. I now see that Mikey is affected by my mental state. Thank you Garrett. She has always been a great and loving dog but is stubborn, domineering and has separation anxiety. After my ex and I split a couple of years ago, Izzy stayed with him for nine months. During that time, she went through a lot of change and, when I got her back, her anxiety was worse than it had ever been. He unpredictably attacks other dogs and mauls them terribly to the point where we have actually considered putting him to sleep due to liability and trauma he has put on our neighbors and any dog that passes our home and Charlie has gotten out and been unfortunate to reach. We arranged our very first meeting with Garrett and within 15 minutes he was able to come into our home and demonstrate to us that he was able to show our pet Charlie who is dominant this initial meeting with Garrett and also allow us to have hope that we would not have to put him down and there would be some way we could train him. We were able to change the dominance and aggressive pattern by working with Charlie and using the psychological-type training methods that Garrett presented to us. He is not the typical type of trainer that involves reward, praise, food, but explains how an animal thinks and how an animal need to be rid of behaviors such as aggressive behavior. Jackie then took his group class with other dogs to reinforce her new found skills. Garrett was so patient but still firm with Jackie, which was something this independent teenage dog needed. He and Belle always went outside together! He will get lots of extra love and attention. He is ready to leave the vet clinic and move into his foster home. He has been at our house for almost two weeks. He is incredibly docile and calm. He is house trained and well behaved. He gets along well with our children and walks well on the leash. He does, however, have some significant separation anxiety. He is a delightful pup, but he does not like to be in a crate or left alone. Short Noses, Cute Noises One of the defining characteristics of the French bulldog breed is their adorable, mushed-in noses. In addition to giving their faces a distinct wrinkly appearance, this can also lead to unique breathing patterns which can result in a variety of noises. Frenchies are usually snorers, tend to grunt when excited and make a variety of snuffling, snorting noises when moving around. If your Frenchie does seem to be a particularly heavy breather when awake you may need to take them to a vet for their airways to be evaluated. This is one of the reasons they have so many wrinkles and folds in their faces and around their noses. Unfortunately, this can cause some problems. In addition to the issues mentioned in the last section, the shortened muzzles can also make it difficult for Frenchies to regulate their body temperature since dogs generally do this by panting. The surface area of the mouth and the act of exhaling hot air and inhaling air cooled by the saliva in the mouth helps keep dogs comfortable. This process is much less effective in French Bulldogs. Keep the Wrinkles Clean! Bacteria can also grow in this area if too much moisture gets trapped there. Some dogs may need this more or less often depending on their unique face and how much time they spend outside. Simply run the wipe around and under their wrinkles making sure to especially get the deep folds typically found over and around the nose. The only problem with this approach though is that it can leave water trapped in the folds. This can lead to bacteria or infections. How Dry is Too Dry? Lightly using an anti-bacterial wipe — that is safe for animals — is the best way to avoid this problem. This will keep them safe and comfortable. You may also want to keep an eye on their noses to make sure they stay properly moisturized as well. There are special nose-care products you can buy for this purpose.
