A loving forever home with a secure fence and another dog in the home She wants to be your "All-American Girl! Carrie Underwood is so sweet and adorable. She is a bundle of tender kisses and has energy for days. She has been a great sister to the newest foster puppies that have come and gone, teaching them the art of playing with toys. Carrie's favorite thing to do is play chase with her K9 buddies. She runs fast and does figure 8's around the resident dogs, who don't even try to keep up with her. Her second favorite activity is napping with the resident Labs. She adores the older resident dogs and has learned great napping skills from them. She continues to work on her leash skills. Carrie has been quietly working on coming out of her shell and has undergone a transformation since arriving at her foster. She loves to curl up in the lap of her FM for naps and bedtime snuggles. She still has her moments of shyness around Foster Dad, but will now come voluntarily to the couch to sit beside him for attention. She's definitely gained lots of confidence. Carrie will need a home with another dog, preferably one who enjoys the same activity level. Carrie still has some shy moments but she is ready for her furever home, and she will steal the heart of anyone who wants to add a sweet yet energetic member to their family. Thank you to the following generous donors currently supporting Carrie's care: Amanda S. Used as police dogs and family dogs alike, this popular mix is renowned for their courage, loyalty, and intelligence. If you want to find the right pure bred puppy for your family, look no further than the shepherd puppies at CT Breeder. Though they love to play, they were bred to be working dogs and thus thrive off of having a job to do. Throughout history, the German Shepherd has been used in the Military, on police forces, as guide dogs for the blind, and even for herding livestock. Though he may embody some of the best canine characteristics, he is not for everyone. He needs a family that is willing to put up with his high-energy and need for constant activity. You will find that your new puppy will need a lot of exercise in order to stave off the boredom this breed commonly experiences, and therefore nix excessive barking and chewing before it becomes a habit. Additionally, this breed is not one for being left alone. When left by himself for long periods of time, he may become bored and frustrated, and act out in ways that may try your patience, such as chewing up your shoes or barking incessantly. Though a great watchdog, the breed is oftentimes suspicious of those outside of his family. He requires extensive training and early socialization in order to become the socialable, well-rounded dog that you envisioned. Caring for Your Adopted Shepherd Puppy German Shepherds were bred to herd livestock all day, so naturally they have a lot of energy. Built for constant action, your puppy will need to be walked several times a day; if you have an area to do so, it is best to let her run around, unleashed. Taking her to the dog park or a dog beach would be ideal, as they get both socialization and exercise in one helping. Exercising your puppy properly will ensure that he or she does not chew, dig, or bark, activities that tend to turn off most dog owners. German Shepherd dogs like to chew. However, if they pick the wrong thing to chew on, they can damage their teeth, consume something that makes them sick, or even choke. Though the German Shepherd is generally a healthy dog, they are prone to certain health conditions, including hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, gastric dilatation-volvulus bloating, which can be life threatening , degenerative myelopathy, and allergies. To ensure the best health for your puppy, feed them the recommended amount of food a day, make sure they are getting all of the recommended nutrients, and exercise them properly. It is never okay to feed your dog one large bowl a day; rather, it is recommended to feed your shepherd four cups a day, divided into two meals. Shepherds tend to grow quickly during their first year, making them prone to bone disorders. A well-balanced diet will help them grow at a steady pace. Until then, do not allow him to run, jump, or play on hard surfaces. Training Your German Shepherd In order to ensure the most harmonious life with your German Shepherd, consistent training is key. Always reward positive behaviors, and take measures to extinguish negative ones before they become a habit. Some things to consider include: Consistently reward positive behaviors with praise. Keep your dog mentally and physically stimulated, but keep it fun. Be consistent in your expectations. Make sure he is well socialized. Give your pup plenty of love and care. Do not yell at your dog. Do not lock your dog up or put her outside because you have not trained her how to properly behave. Do not isolate your dog. Do not reward bad behaviors. Do not neglect, shame, or blame your dog. Do not give up on her. Properly training your shepherd will ensure a peaceful and fulfilling life with her new family. If you want to adopt a German Shepherd but do not feel confident in your training abilities, our experienced and talented trainers at CTBreeder are known for utilizing the best training practices that are breed specific. If you buy a puppy from our new litter, you will get lifetime dog training guaranteed to ensure a lasting bond with your new pup. We have male, female, red, sable, and much more. In addition to our selection of designer and purebred puppies for sale, we offer expert dog training, professional pet grooming and the best pet supplies, pet foods and pet products available at the low prices. They are not only cute, but they are also very intelligent and obedient dogs. They make great pets because of their loyalty, love for their owners, and of course their intelligence. They are not the dog breed for everyone, so you will need to have some experience with these types of dogs before purchasing one for your home. The first thing that you need to do when you are looking for German Shepherd puppies for sale in CT is to research the breed. Make sure that you find out what breed you want. This can help you determine if the puppy you are interested in is a purebred or if you should look for a purebred German Shepherd over a crossbreed. If you look into the breed you already know this information about the dog is not going to change. You will also have to decide where you want to buy the dog from. You may have to travel a little bit to get it to you, but it can be worth it. Once you have decided to buy a dog, the next step is to go out and look. Take the time to look at all the different breeders that are out there. Make sure that you check out each one to see if you like what you see. This will take a little bit of work and you may want to start by going to several different places until you find the best breeder for your German Shepherd puppies for sale in CT. Take the time to make an appointment for an interview with each breeder that you are considering buying your dog from. You will want to get to know this breeder very well so you know which breed of dog he is selling and how long he has been in business. Once you can meet the person who will be caring for your dog, you will want to talk to him or her about the proper training your dog will need. You do not want your dog to end up in an animal shelter. So make sure that you ask your breeder any questions that you might have in regards to training your dog. You want to make sure that the dog you buy has had the proper amount of training. Your breeder will be able to answer any questions that you may have about German Shepherd puppies for sale in CT that you may have. So make sure that you understand as much as you can before you go ahead and make a purchase. When you go to the breeder and meet the dogs that they have for sale, do some research on them. Make sure that you ask them about their previous breeding successes and any negative experiences. Ask them if they have a list of dogs that they have sold. You want to make sure that the one that you choose to buy is a good breed for you. So before you buy, make sure that you research all your options. Black German Shepherd puppies for sale in CT will give you years of loving care. They will love you very much and treat you like the family member that you are. They will be loyal companions and protectors to your family and friends. Just make sure that you do your homework. They are one of the most difficult dogs to find in the pet market today and they usually command an extortionate price. You have to really be determined to get your German Shepherd puppy or dogs in the case of Shih Tzu from a breeder or rescue group. German Shepherds are incredibly intelligent dogs with a highly structured personality that makes them easy to train. They love to please and are eager to please. They are also great at house training since they are very clean and do not tolerate messes. However, these traits do not mean that they cannot have their normal personality quirks. They are still puppies, and your German Shepherd puppy should grow out of that stage in two to three years. The important thing is to know what to look for in a good German Shepherd breeder so that you can avoid paying high prices for a stocky, weakling puppy. A German Shepherd breeder who knows his dog well will be able to spot a weakling immediately. And he will be able to teach his dog right from wrong as well. One other characteristic of the Black German Shepherd is its personality. These dogs are full of energy and will run and play all day long. Because of this trait, they need regular exercise and are not good pets for very young children. They also get easily bored and do not do well with elderly people. If you are considering buying German Shepherds as pets, you may want to consider another breed. You can oftentimes find Black German Shepherd puppies for sale in CT at pet stores that specialize in large breed dogs. Sometimes you can even find a breeder near your home. Check around and see if any are in your neighborhood and then ask them about their personality and breeding history. You can even ask your local veterinarian for advice. Check with your local pet store, vet, or hunting club. Many breeders also advertise in newspapers and magazines. Some may not be serious breeders but may have puppies for sale. A breeder is going to give you a good report about the dog and tell you all about its temperament and health history. Be sure to take your time and really evaluate all of the dogs. Go ahead and make an informed decision when looking for German Shepherd puppies for sale in CT. These dogs are wonderful companions and make great additions to any family. Go into this journey prepared and you should find a long-time friend and a loyal life companion. Good luck! If you live near a German Shepherd rescue then this might be a great option for you as well. Some shelters have German Shepherd puppies for sale in CT, but these dogs are often not purebred puppies but have been altered or bred from other sources. Check out any German Shepherd rescue near you and see if any of the dogs there are purebreds. Otherwise, you can go to the nearest shelter and ask if they have any German Shepherd puppies for sale. If you choose to buy a whole litter there are many advantages to doing so. Also, German Shepherd puppies make great families and are very easy to train when trained properly. Keep in mind that finding a German Shepherd for sale in CT is fairly easy if you know where to look and what to look for. Your breeder is going to be the best source for information and should help you determine if a particular German Shepherd is a good choice for you. Remember to check out the shelter also; this will give you an idea of what the dog has been through before and what you can expect. Share this:. Share 0 Shares Golden Retrievers are known as family-friendly dogs and they are very popular among breeders because they are so well known as family dogs. Golden retrievers can be trained for shows, obedience, or focusing on being family-friendly. Golden Retriever breeders that are trustworthy will have great reviews and contact information, and they take care of their puppies how they should. Breeders that are AKC registered and have other registrations, awards, or certifications can ensure that you are choosing a trustworthy breeder. The sad truth is that many pet store purchased pups actually come from puppy mills. Basically, there is zero authenticity with pet stores. When it comes to adopting any animal from a pet store, there is an increased risk of unforeseen health or genetic problems. You also cultivate a life-long relationship with the breeder, meaning support is available to you anytime you may need it. With My Golden Retriever Puppies , you have the option to come and visit both the puppy and the breeder in person! Golden Retrievers are an adaptable breed, meaning they are better at adapting to seasonal changes and various types of climate than certain other breeds. Goldens sport a double-coat, which ensures that these sweet pups are able to tolerate slightly colder temperatures than their friends from other breeds. Your pup deserves better than that, which is why here at My Golden Retriever Puppies , we ensure high-quality care is taken of your pet at all times. We even have all types of golden retrievers for sale! At My Golden Retriever Puppies, we pride ourselves on our golden retriever price being fair and affordable for high quality puppies. Like adopting a Golden Retriever from a pet store, there is an increased risk when adopting a pup from a rescue center or shelter as well. For example, pups purchased through a shelter or rescue center are far less likely to come with the kinds of health guarantees and reassurances that a breeder can provide. Once puppies are born, you will receive your pick order. We will send out photos each week and very helpful information for when you bring your puppy home. You will also be invited to join your litter's personal Facebook group so you can watch them as they grow! We'll let you know how they are progressing. You will feel completely prepared and ready once it's time to transition the puppy from my home to yours. Puppies are selected face to face when the puppies are 8 weeks old in the order in which I received your deposit. It is relatively easy to provide everyone with a gentle-natured Goldendoodle because our puppies take this quality from their parents - our puppies are well known for sweet dispositions and people-loving personalities. The balance on the puppy is due when the puppy is 5-weeks old if paying by check or money order. Please make a check payable to Lori Allen. After puppies are 5 weeks old, only cash is accepted for remaining balance. Puppies may not go to their forever homes until they are 8 weeks old puppy selection day. Be sure to have a checkup appointment scheduled with your vet within 72 hours of taking them home. Remember that puppies should not go out in public until they have had all of their immunizations - this is a must! No public parks, walks in the neighborhood or obedience training outside the home. Some people get an in-home trainer to come and work with the puppy and all the family members, then continue with obedience training classes later when the puppy has had all immunizations. Can I pick my own puppy? You will pick your puppy and take them home at 8 weeks old. Because doodles are well known for their sweet dispositions and loving personalities, all you need to do is let me know the generation, size, color and sex of the puppy you are interested in adopting. What is included in the purchase price? This price includes age appropriate shots for the puppy, a vet inspection, regular dewormings, a month written guarantee, a sample of food, one month free pet insurance, slip leash, a toy with the scent of your puppies litter mates as well as a packet of information that is helpful to any new puppy owner. You will be given the health record from our vet on your puppy. How do I qualify for a 3-year extension to my Health Guarantee? We feel so strongly about health and wellness of your puppy that we offer an "additional" THREE year health guarantee, total of 60 months, if you keep your puppy on an Auto Ship Order of Paw Tree puppy food. Paw Tree will notify us when you place an order. To honor this offer you must order within 10 days of taking ownership of your new puppy. If you choose to end using Paw Tree, or not order, the guarantee extension ends at that time. Are the dew claws removed from the puppies? It is not necessary to remove your pets dew claws. So many dogs and cats are acquiring serious life-threatening health issues through poor diet and vitamin deficiency. Paw Tree provides the optimum nutritional benefits for all life-stages ensuring good health and longevity for your Gratefuldoodles puppy, which is why we are willing to stand behind our health guarantee when you feed this specific line of holistically-formulated dog food only! How big will the puppies get? Petite doodles lbs. However; please keep in mind that doodles are a hybrid and not a "standardized breed" and it is important to note that specific sizes cannot be guaranteed for a grown dog. Buyers must be willing to accept a puppy with the grown weight and heights being only estimates, as there is the possibility for puppies to be more or less than the estimated weight ranges above. What should I bring to pick up my puppy? If the trip is going to be more than an hour, it is a good idea to bring some water for your puppy to drink and a crate to carry your puppy in. Plastic bags and paper towels are a good idea just in case the puppy gets car sick or needs to make a potty stop. When can I pick up my puppy? Puppies must be a minimum of 8 weeks old when they leave my home. If they need to stay longer because of work or vacation, etc. When is the puppies next vet appointment? In our contract we ask that you take your puppy to the vet within hrs of purchase. If the vet finds anything seriously wrong with the puppy you may bring it back at the buyers expense and we will replace the puppy or pay for the vet cost up to the price of the puppy see contract for details if you wish to keep it. If you do not take the puppy to the vet within 72hrs please note that our contract will then become null and void. The puppy will then go to the vet again around 9-wks no later than 10 wks of age for it's second set of shots. The puppy will go for it's final visit no later than weeks of age. Do your puppies shed? What about coat types? Any doodle breeder that does is not being truthful. Most first generation Goldendoodles shed lightly; some can have moderate shedding. Most F1 Goldendoodles will have plush, straight to loose wavy coat which makes grooming their coat much easier to maintain. Occasionally, a F1 breeding will produce a more curly coat. Our F1B cross puppies will have a higher success rate for being non-shedding dogs. Because of the curlier coat, their coats have to be groomed more often to prevent matting and are harder to maintain than an F1 coat. If you want a Goldendoodle that is low shed, you should be considering an F1B and not a first generation F1. While many F1's will shed less than purebred Golden Retrievers, the amount that they will shed cannot be predicted. Some F1's will be low shed, and some will not. Again, breeders who claim their F1 Goldendoodles are 'no shed' are either unknowledgeable or stretching the truth. If shedding is a concern for you, you may not be happy with an F1 and I would recommend an F1B. Many, but not all, F1B's are low shed. What about Allergies? First generation F1 Goldendoodles are not recommended for families with allergy issues. Breeders who claim their F1 Goldendoodles are 'hypoallergenic' or allergy friendly are either unknowledgeable or stretching the truth. While SOME F1's may be allergy friendly, there really is no way to predict which puppies are and which aren't. If you have allergies in your household you should consider an F1B goldendoodle. Although not every F1B will be allergy friendly, the chances are much higher. Can I breed my new puppy? We do this to protect our puppies and ensure they are being placed into loving "forever" homes. If you are a breeder looking for a puppy to add to your program, please email us, as we may occasionally select an outstanding puppy as a candidate for breeding. What is your visitor's policy? We do not allow visitation of our puppies until they are 8 weeks old and ready to go home. Due to the recent outbreaks of Parvo virus and it's ability to kill entire litters within days, we have decided that we must limit visitors to those who have reserved or purchased a puppy. The health and safety of our puppies is our first priority. If you have reserved a puppy and then visit and find anything about us or our dogs unsatisfactory, we will refund your deposit. Please note that the support never stops here at Grateful Doodles. We are more than willing to answer any questions at any time regarding your dog. Please never hesitate to call or email. And we would love to get updates and pictures of your puppy with their new family! What is a Golden Doodle? Are you considering getting a Goldendoodle or just someone curious about exactly what this new popular breed is? A Goldendoodle is a hybrid breed- a cross between a Golden Retriever and a Poodle. They have been bred in North American since about the early to mid nineties and they are growing more and more popular. Description of the Goldendoodle: Since the Goldendoodle is a cross between a Poodle and Golden Retriever, you might be wondering what they look like. The physical appearance can vary greatly according to what generation hybrid you have as well as what parents they were bred from. They can vary in color from cream, gold, tan, chocolate, grey, red, apricot, black, or a mix of any of these colors. Their coat can vary from a shaggy retriever-looking coat to a curly poodle or anywhere in between. Most Goldendoodles are a fair mix in between the two and are usually low to no shedding which also makes them great for families with allergies or high allergy risk. The length of the coat when left uncut usually falls between four to eight inches. Generations of the Goldendoodle: When you talk with a breeder about getting a Goldendoodle, you might hear about the generations of Goldendoodles. This refers to how the dog was bred. For example, a first generation Goldendoodle referred to as F1 was the first to be bred. This comes from the Golden Retriever and a Poodle, both pure bred. Then you may also hear about second generation Goldendoodles F2 and these come from a Goldendoodle being bred with another Goldendoodle. Size of the Goldendoodle: There are different sizes of Goldendoodles, based on the parentage of the dog in question. A good way to predict the size of puppies is to add the weight of the parents together and then divide by two. This is of course, just a general idea and there could be puppies that will fall above and below that line. While some standard Goldendoodles have grown to more than pounds, the average is as follows: Standard - A Goldendoodle that is predicted to be 45 lbs or more at adulthood. Petite - A Goldendoodle that is predicted to be lbs at adulthood. Living Conditions and Exercise Requirements: The Goldendoodle is a fairly easy to care for breed which is another thing that makes them so popular. They require a regular, moderate amount of exercise and fairly low coat maintenance depending on the type of coat. They are very social dogs and love to be around people and are also known for being great with children. The Goldendoodle can live in the city or on a farm with just as much comfort and ease. They are stronger than their parent breeds and live longer. The average life expectancy is around 15 years although some have been known to live longer. It is suggested that you have regular tests on the hips, eyes and for VWD to detect possible problems early on. Grooming: Goldendoodles need regular grooming and coat care as all dogs do but for most, the maintenance is minimal. For short to medium length coats, you will need very little care. Overbreeding: Think twice about purchasing from a Goldendoodle breeder who always has puppies available or offers an excessive amount of dog breeds. This may suggest that the breeder is overly focused on profit instead of the health and wellbeing of their puppies. Lack of health checks: A reputable Goldendoodle breeder will conduct health clearances on their breeding dogs to ensure they are free of genetic health issues that could be passed on. If a breeder cannot provide documentation of these health checks, it may be a sign that they are not prioritizing health. Further Reading.

The wings jut out a bit, but the only touch points on your dog are the strap across their chest and the one behind their legs. This is a more secure costume, so it would work well for larger dogs, but since the wings can be reached with a turn of the head, it might not survive a teething puppy. Who It's Not Good For It might not be as good for large dogs because the sizes only suit up to pound dogs, and dogs that hail from the south might overheat. Siri: play Baby Shark. Just because a puppy growls at you does not mean he does not like you or is becoming aggressive. However, growling at you should not be tolerated, and you should take action to stop it. You can help your puppy learn to curb his growling and become a good-mannered puppy in the process. All rights reserved. This image may not be used by other entities without the express written consent of wikiHow, Inc. The best way to teach your puppy a command or to teach your puppy that certain behaviors are not acceptable is through positive reinforcement. This simply means praising appropriate behavior instead of attempting to punish inappropriate behavior. You can weed out improper behavior by giving your puppy motivation to behave in the ways that he know will get him praise and treats. One of the most important aspects of training via positive reinforcement is consistency since your puppy will only understand through repetition. The first thing to be consistent about is the word you use to communicate to your puppy that you want him to stop growling. Edited by Julie Shaw and Debbie Martin. You should also keep several small pieces of treat in your pocket and give him a nibble-size bite of treat while he remains quiet and docile as you hold him. You want the puppy to begin associating the treats with the quiet, calm behavior he shows when you hold him. As soon as the puppy starts growling, stop giving him praise and treats. However, do not put him down. Only use the command once and then wait for the puppy to stop. Repeating the phrase over and over will only make it harder for the puppy to associate it with the desired behavior. As soon as the puppy stops growling for several seconds, provide more praise and treats. Always end on a moment of positive reinforcement. Though you may have to wait for the puppy to stop growling even when you yourself are ready to put him down, always end the training sessions on moments of positive reinforcement. Wait for the puppy to stop growling, give him the praise and treats, and then finally put him back down. To help avoid too much reliance on treats, you can also use other forms of positive reinforcement. Puppies will only learn the behavior if you show extreme consistency in providing and taking away the positive reinforcement. Mixed messages does not work in puppy training. This means that everyone in the household has to do their part in the training process as well. Ensure that everyone who handles the puppy uses the same process of providing positive reinforcement. Some puppies may catch onto the command after only a few repetitions, whereas other puppies may need weeks to catch on. Have patience because with consistency, the puppy will eventually learn. Never get so frustrated that you scold or swat the puppy. Stick with positive reinforcement. While you should decrease the dependence on treats, always continue remaining consistent with other forms of positive reinforcement, especially praise. When your puppy fully understands and consistently obeys all the time, you can reduce to only providing an occasional treat. Though common, puppies do not like being picked up under the arms and lifted that way. It can even hurt the puppy. This is a safer way to pick up the puppy. Volume 3. Steven R. Blackwell Publishing. If your puppy is growling at everyone, then consider that he just might not like being picked up. Dogs are meant to be running around and exploring. It is not natural or normal for dogs to be carried and the puppy might feel uncomfortable being handled in this way. It may be more of a fearful reaction at the situation than an aggressive reaction. If your puppy is fine with you picking him up but begins growling shortly after, then you can deflect the behavior with a toy. Ensure that you give the puppy the toy before he starts growling. Otherwise he can mistake the toy as a reward for the growling. A toy is also a good way to deflect a puppy that is too mouthy—playfully bites at your arms or hands—when you pick him up. Your puppy will likely growl at other times in addition to when you pick him up. He may growl when playing with other puppies, when playing with toys, etc. Contact a certified animal behaviorist in your area to help eliminate aggressive behavior related to food. Print Retrievers, for the most part, make great family dogs. They are also smart, so they learn quickly and their strong willingness to please often makes retrievers a great addition to the family. But some retriever puppies are a high-energy ball of fire, one that is difficult to train or even handle in daily life. And sometimes there will be signs of aggressive behavior that are concerning. However, there is a fine line between puppy play behavior and hyper and aggressive behavior. Some owners are reluctant to stop such behavior thinking that it is just puppy behavior and therefore the dog will outgrow it. If you have a retriever puppy that is hyper or aggressive you might wonder what can be done and why they are acting that way. Here is some guidance on this topic. What are normal puppy behaviors? It is normal for very young puppies to nip at your hands and your feet. It is also normal for them to chew on things, jump on you and walk all over you. An 8-week-old puppy nipping at your hand might at first seem cute and sweet. But one bite from those exceedingly sharp puppy teeth and you might decide its not so cute. Those teeth can puncture your skin in a second and draw blood just as quickly. So, while it may be normal for a puppy to nip at your hand or foot, it is not a behavior that you want to ignore. Puppy play is naturally aggressive When puppies playing with their litter mates, the play can be very aggressive. This is natural, as dogs, they are always figuring out their pack and where they fit into the pack. Recognizing puppy play You can recognize when a retriever puppy is playing by the stance they take. They also may run around in circles, growling, or barking in high pitched barks, but when they do this their ears will be up, their tail wagging and they do not look threatening. It is uncommon for puppies under 12 weeks of age to exhibit true aggression. True aggression involves a dog exhibiting prolonged growling with a stiff posture and baring of teeth. Their hackles the hair on their back will be raised and they will be poised in a threatening position with ears back. If you were to approach a dog in this position which I do not recommend they will often move toward you and try to bite or snap at you. This type of aggression is something to be fearful about and is not healthy. Isolate the dog as much as possible and consult a veterinary or other professional for help or advice. What are signs of aggression in puppies All puppies can act aggressively, but if you take steps to address the aggressive behaviors while your dog is a young puppy, you can make a huge difference on how or whether that aggression progresses. These are all forms of aggression and none of them should be tolerated, not as a puppy and certainly not as a dog. There are also dominance behaviors that puppies exhibit that are often mistaken as aggression. They include things like jumping on people, stepping on people, pushing you around, forcing you to pet them and others. While these behaviors can be done aggressively, and should still be corrected immediately, they are not the same as aggression. Definition of puppy Because we often get clients that bring out their dogs that are close to a year old and refer to them as puppies, I want to define what I consider a puppy. A puppy is a dog under six months of age. Most retrievers are a good size by around six months. They will often continue to grow up until about a year and a half, but they have the bulk of their size by the time they are six months. And by six months, you need to have a handle on any aggressive behaviors, or you are going to struggle with eliminating them. Is it normal for a puppy to be very aggressive? It is normal for a puppy to test you with aggressive behaviors. And to be clear, that place should be at the bottom of the pack, under all your family members. I understand that your dog is a part of your family but allowing your dog to be in a position above any or all your family members is just asking for trouble. Treating your dog as a human and attributing your dog with human thoughts and reasoning is not fair to your dog or to your family. Love your dog, but make sure your dog is the lowest member of your pack and you will have a much easier time with obedience and basic good behavior. How to stop puppy growling Growling is often the first step for dog aggression. Or, if you try and take a toy away from your dog. No matter how or when you see the aggression start, it is important to nip it in the bud right away. A sharp NO command sometimes is all that is needed, especially if it is well-timed with the first sign of the growl or nip. Other times you may need to grab your dogs muzzle and squeeze. If these corrections do not seem to be helping, I would immediately crate my dog if it growled at me. Be sure you do not let your dog out of the crate while he is exhibiting a growling behavior. Only let him out if he is behaving appropriately. How to stop puppy nipping or biting A dog that nips or bites you often started as a very young puppy. We teach our puppies at 8-weeks-old that biting and nipping people is not allowed. And at this very young age, they learn it very quickly. Your pup may cry out or squirm, but that is fine. In fact, you need to be quite stern to make an impression. If it continues, you are not being firm or consistent enough. How to stop puppy growling while tugging During play, it is not uncommon for retriever puppies to growl and tug at toys, blankets, even your pant leg. This behavior is usually just playful and natural. However, I would still try to end this behavior as soon as possible. While almost harmless at first, this behavior can escalate quickly as your dog grows bigger and stronger. You can end this behavior first by not participating in it. If you start tugging with a toy with your puppy, you are going to encourage the behavior. The second step is to discourage the behavior with a sharp NO command. It can help if you say GIVE when you take the item. This will start to teach him the GIVE command that will be helpful later if you are a hunter. How to stop puppy baring his teeth A puppy or dog that bares his teeth to you is threatening to bite you. Even if the puppy goes no further than to bare the teeth and growl, you need to end this behavior. This behavior is far more dangerous than the puppy that nips at your hand. The nips may be done in play, since that is how puppies play with one another, but baring of teeth and growling is different. And you must handle it differently. I am not talking about lifting your dog off the floor with the shake, but if your puppy is very young, that may indeed be a great correction. Have you ever witnessed a mama dog correct her puppies? This is not a violent thing, just a natural correction for a puppy. The puppies rarely cry out or whimper when given this correction, they just walk away and understand that the behavior they were exhibiting is not acceptable. If your dog continues to bare his teeth even after this correction, you may have a bigger problem on your hands, and I would proceed carefully. True dog aggression is no joking matter. Dogs with aggression problems can snap at any time and go from baring their teeth to full out attacks. Hyper behavior is different from aggression. A hyper dog has a lot of energy and may not know how to control or channel that energy. Often hyper behavior is a genetic trait. In this sense, it is not something that you can eliminate. But you can take steps to make it more manageable. Exercise more Dogs that are hyper need more exercise than dogs that are more docile in nature. If your dog is hyper and is not getting enough exercise, the hype behavior is going to drive the dog to other behaviors that you may not enjoy such as chewing up your dining room table leg or your favorite pair of shoes. For instance, if your dog is hyper and is jumping up and down all the time, and you not only allow the jumping but pet him or her and give praise while your dog is jumping, then you are unknowingly rewarding the jumping behavior. Give your puppy time to mature Retrievers are often full of energy while they are young, well some a bit longer, but tend to slow down as they mature. But as they mature they do usually slow down and become a bit less energetic. Training Highly energetic dogs can benefit greatly from structured training programs. Programs such as the ones we offer here at Otter Tail Kennels, can teach an energetic dog control and channel their energy into hunting or retrieving which can make home life more manageable. There are even some things you can do at home to get more control of your energetic dog. Practice sitting I know this sounds boring, and for you it is. But for an energetic dog that does not like sitting at all, having them sit for 30 seconds, or a minute or two can be very challenging. They will need many reminders at first, but over time they will learn to settle and sit calmly. You can slowly increase the amount of time. This simple obedience drill will help your dog learn control. Teach your dog the kennel command so that when you say Kennel, they run into their crate and stay there until you release them. This basically sends your dog on a time out and forces them to practice control and settle. Final thoughts on why my puppy is so hyper and aggressive For dogs under 6 months of age, much hyper and aggressive behavior is simply puppy play. You must teach your puppy boundaries and the earlier you teach them the better. Be consistent in your corrections and persistent, and over time you will reap the benefits. You can email me ottertailkennels gmail. I would be happy to discuss your goals for your retriever and tell you about the programs I offer. Until next time happy retrieving. Contact Help! Have you ever wondered what this reaction means? How do you get it to stop? Manage the behavior by tracing its root cause Growling is one of the several ways a dog can express how he feels. Did you accidentally drop your dog while trying to lift it off the ground? Is your pooch trying to assert its dominance over you? Below are some of the usual problems that may lead to this unwanted dog behavior: Mishandling Take note that carrying your dog sometimes requires a particular technique. This way, you can ensure his comfort and encourage him to respond well every time you attempt to hold him up. In some cases, dogs growl to express pain. It may come from a broken limb, painful muscles, or even stomach flu. It would be wise to look out for symptoms of possible health problems and consult with a veterinarian. Anxiety In addition to vocalizing pain, dogs also growl as their means to scare away people or animals when they feel anxious or fearful. For example, you or other members of the family might have lost grip while holding the dog. During these situations, you need to be extra mindful of the body language before approaching your dog. Additionally, it would be best to do small and slow movements to avoid further startling the animal. In such cases, the growling serves as their defense mechanism until they begin warming up to this new way of expressing affection. Then, you may proceed to place your dog on your lap. Excessive excitement Puppies can sometimes feel overly excited when presented with something new and strange. In some cases, they express that feeling by growling. As a result, you need to quickly distinguish pleasure or play growling with the aggressive or threatening type. This way, you can identify the best way to approach the situation. How to train your dog to love being carried in your arms The faster you determine the main reason why a dog growls when you pick it up, the easier you can correct the behavior. For example, if it stems from a traumatic experience, you should introduce positive emotions when you attempt to carry your dog. Pick up your pooch — Make sure to be extra careful with the legs and the rib cage. Also, note any signs of resistance. If your dog appears tense, we recommend starting with gentle cuddles instead. If you have a tiny dog, you might want to consider investing in a small pet carrier that you can tie around your neck. Reward with a nutrient-rich treat — Nothing is more effective in associating positive feelings towards a command like feeding your dog good quality treats. Opt for nutritious snacks like homemade doggie biscuits or a small piece of jerky. Put your puppy down — Once you complete the practice and introduce the new cue, you can slowly set your puppy down. On the next day, you can repeat this exercise until your dog becomes fully comfortable with you holding him in your arms. Delaware K9 Academy Can Help! We may earn money or products from the companies mentioned in this post. While being faced with a growling dog is rather scary, can you imagine being scared of a puppy growling? Puppy Growling? In fact, there are many different reasons why puppies growl. As an owner, you have to figure out what is causing your puppy to growl and address that issue. In this article, I will explain why puppies growl and help you understand what your puppy is trying to say. Continue reading to learn different types of growls and what they mean. Why Do Puppies Growl? While it may be unsettling to hear, growling is a normal form of canine communication. Just like people, puppies and dogs use their vocal abilities to express their needs and feelings. Growling, howling, whining, whimpering, and barking are different types of vocalization puppies use to communicate their wants and needs with their owners. Besides vocalization, your puppy will also use body language to communicate with you. Understanding canine body language can be rather tricky, especially if you are a new dog owner. And if you are unable to pick up on these subtle cues, your puppy might feel the need to growl every once in a while just to get their point across. For the first couple of days after being born, puppies know only how to whimper and whine and they use these vocalizations to communicate with their mother. But once puppies become more mobile and start interacting with their environment, they learn how to growl and bark. By the time you bring your new puppy home , they will be old enough to know how to growl and will use this type of vocalization to communicate with you. While most people associate growling with aggression, dogs and puppies growl for many different reasons. The most common reasons puppies growl are pain, fear, possession, territoriality, playfulness, and possession aggression. Growling is just one of many ways that puppies and adult dogs communicate. Therefore, you will need to understand what your puppy is trying to say in order to meet their needs and respond accordingly. But with time, you will learn how to distinguish a playful growl from a fearful growl and will know exactly what your puppy is trying to communicate. The only way you will ever be able to address and correct this unwanted behavior is to understand why it is happening in the first place. So, instead of trying to teach your puppy to stop growling, you should find the reason why the puppy is growling and address it. Your puppy will most likely stop growling altogether as soon as the underlying issue has been identified and dealt with. Here are the most common reasons behind puppy growling: 1. Pain Both puppies and adult dogs may growl when they are in pain. Your puppy might be sick or have an injury that is causing them pain, especially if they start growling when you reach for a specific part of their body. Trying to diagnose your puppy at home can make things way worse and cause even more fear. In this situation, your only job is to figure out why your puppy is growling and take the necessary steps to resolve the problem. The best and only thing you can do for your puppy in this situation is to take them to the vet as soon as possible. Your vet will examine your puppy, diagnose the problem, and talk with you about possible treatment options. Bear in mind, your puppy will probably start to growl even more during the exam and might even try to nip at you or the vet. It is completely normal for puppies to growl and whine while they are in pain. However, the growling will stop completely as soon as your puppy starts to feel better. Fear It is very common for young puppies to growl when they are afraid. If your puppy typically growls at specific people, strangers, or in unfamiliar places, they are most likely scared. Furthermore, certain sounds such as fireworks, thunder, or extremely loud music can cause a puppy to be afraid and start growling. Fearful puppies use growls as a defensive mechanism to intimidate the threat into leaving them alone. So, if your puppy is, for example, afraid of strangers, they will start growling as soon as they see an unfamiliar face approaching. The stranger who initially wanted to pet your puppy will back off as soon as he hears the growling and continue walking without giving your pup a second glance. So, if your puppy starts to growl whenever a stranger wants to pet them, start telling people to not approach, or even avoid taking your dog to crowded areas. If your puppy is afraid of strangers, you should try socializing and exposing them to a variety of different people and situations. Enrolling your pup into puppy kindergarten class can also improve their socialization skills and make them feel at ease around strangers. And if your efforts seem in vain, you should consider enlisting the help of a canine behavioral expert or a certified dog trainer. Possession Also known as resource guarding, possession aggression can be another reason why your puppy growls. Puppies who exhibit this type of behavior will have a strong urge to protect their resources such as food, toys, territory, or other objects. If your puppy has possession aggression, they may growl, snap, and even bite if they think that someone will take their things away. Most puppies with this problem have a strong need to guard their food, but make no mistake, your pup can get overly protective over anything they find valuable. For example, some puppies will growl over a seemingly unimportant item, such as a ball of paper, with the same intensity as they would over a full bowl of food. Growling is just one of many signs of resource guarding, and your pup might also snap and bite when someone approaches or tries to take away their possession. Furthermore, some puppies will also fight with their siblings over various items or favorite people. Instead of punishing your pup for growling, you should teach them to trust you around their belongings. The best way to do this is to show your pup that they will be rewarded every time they drop the item they are guarding. Essentially, if your puppy is used to getting things their way, they will easily become frustrated and use growling to show disappointment. Obedience training is your best chance of dealing with a frustrated puppy. Your puppy might growl at you while playing fetch, or they might growl at other puppies while they are wrestling or playing chase. Playful growls are completely normal and nothing you should worry about. If you are a novice dog owner, take your puppy to socialization classes and observe how they interact with other puppies there. Understanding how puppies play and interact with one another will help you distinguish playful growls from fighting growls. While play growling is completely normal, you can stop playing with your pup if you notice that the growls are becoming more intense. If this happens, just take a short break and give your pup a few minutes to calm down before resuming playing. And if the same thing happens while your puppy is playing with another dog, separate them until they both calm down. As soon as your puppy seems calm enough, you can let them play with other dogs again. We actually have an article about playful growling with other dogs and puppies. We like to call this game of puppies growling and showing teeth, bitey face. Territoriality Some dogs and puppies feel the need to defend their territory and might start growling at anyone new who is entering the property. If your pup is growling every time a mailman or delivery person rings the doorbell, they are showing classic signs of territorial aggression. Puppies with territorial aggression may start growling over other territories as well. Bear in mind, a territorial puppy might start growling at anyone who is overstepping on their perceived territory. If this is the case, they might even start growling at family members or at you. Luckily, you can get a trainer or a behavioral expert to work with your dog and help curb their territorial tendencies. Like adult dogs, puppies use many types of vocalization, including growling, to communicate with their owners. Playfulness is the most common reason small puppies growl. However, pain, fear, territoriality, possession aggression, and resource guarding can also be the reasons that can cause your puppy to start growling all of a sudden. Growling is one of many ways puppies communicate, and you as an owner need to understand what your puppy is trying to say in order to react properly. When it comes to puppies, growling is usually not a sign of aggression, but your pup may snap or try to bite you. The best thing you can do to stop this behavior is to find out why your pup growled in the first place and resolve that issue. For example, if your puppy growls only while playing, you can curb this behavior by stopping the play session and giving your pup a few minutes to calm down. Instead, it can make matters even worse and your puppy can end up being afraid of you. The most common signs of aggression in puppies are growling, snarling, mouthing, snapping, dominance, stiff posture, fixed gaze, and biting. However, puppies do like to play rough, and normal puppy play usually includes growling, chasing, biting, and barking. Since normal puppy play and aggression have some similar elements, it can be hard to distinguish one from the other, especially if you are a novice owner. You should know that problem behaviors are more intense and last longer than normal play behaviors. If your puppy that has never before shown signs of aggression starts to growl, snap, or try to bite you, chances are that they are in pain. Pain is one of the most common causes of aggression in puppies and can be a sign of injury or disease. If you suspect that your puppy is in pain, take them to the vet as soon as possible to get appropriate treatment. Conclusion While it might sound scary at first, growling is just one of many vocalizations puppies use to communicate with their owners. When it comes to puppies, growling is rarely a sign of aggression, but it can be a sign that your puppy is in pain. Is your puppy growling? If so, do you know why? These pooches are on the larger side females range between 55 and 70 pounds, while males weigh in between 65 and 75 pounds and require lots of exercise, which may make some families shy away. But don't let their size—or high energy—deter you. Golden retrievers are highly intelligent, easy to train compared to other breeds of dogs , and incredibly friendly. Whether you're already a golden puppy parent or considering adding one to the family, read on to learn some fun facts and see some seriously cute photos! One even surmises that goldens are descendants of Russian circus dogs! These alternate theories were debunked, however, when the personal records of Lord Tweedmouth of Inverness, Scotland were made public. Lord Tweedmouth was an avid waterfowl hunter who wanted to breed a dog with some serious bird retrieving skills. So, in , he bred a yellow retriever named Nous with a liver-colored Tweed Water Spaniel named Belle. The result? A pack of puppies with the exact hunting skills he was looking for, which he dubbed golden retrievers. Golden retrievers were later brought to North America—sometime during the s—where they became hugely popular for their beautiful looks and sweet personalities. Then, in , they were officially recognized as a breed by the American Kennel Club. Continue to 2 of 9 below. They can range from a very light, snowy white, to a yellow-gold, to a dark, coppery red. No matter the color of their coat, however, it's important to never cut your golden retriever's hair—doing so can put her at risk of skin cancer, among other health issues. Their coats are made up of two layers—the long, silky, waterproof outercoat and soft, warming undercoat—and act as insulators against all types of weather. So, if you think to trim your golden's coat in the summer to keep it cool, think again! It'll be much cooler and its skin will be protected from the sun with its coat intact. Their love of food can cause health problems like obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease , so it's important to feed your golden the right amount of food for her weight, age, and activity level. Not sure how much is right for your dog? Talk to your vet about a healthy diet. And take it easy on the treats! It's true that goldens love to eat, but they like to carry non-food items in their mouths, too. Their mouthy nature makes everyday stuff such as sticks, shoes, or even the remote control a highly prized possession. Because golden retrievers have very gentle mouths, challenges such as the golden retriever egg challenge—in which a golden is tasked with holding an uncooked egg in its mouth without breaking it—have popped up all over the web. Life Span Did You Know? The German Shepherd is one of the most versatile, well-recognized, and popular dog breeds in the world. The modern German Shepherd is descended from a family of various German herding dogs. Breed standards were not developed until the late 19th century when Captain Max von Stephanitz, a German cavalry officer, worked with Arthur Meyer and other breeders to develop the ideal German herding dog. Stephanitz and Meyer wrote the breed standard in and the American Kennel Club recognized the German Shepherd as a member of the Herding Group in .Although they were originally bred as herding dogs, they were also bred for versatility, which made the German Shepherd an all-around working dog that could excel in a variety of applications. German Shepherds are one of the common dog breeds employed in K-9 units in both police and military applications. They also make great service dogs and, of course, are still awesome herding dogs and farm dogs! The German Shepherd is a strong-willed and highly intelligent dog. They have a playful, energetic spirit and tend to get along with children, other dogs, and other pets, which makes them a great family companion. A born protector, the German Shepherd will provide a great sense of security for their family while their loving and lively personality will make them fit right in as a companion. German Shepherds are naturally protective and can be wary of strangers at first. A well-socialized German Shepherd will bark to alert you and tends to warm up to strangers once introduced. German Shepherds are dogs that were bred to herd and work. This, plus their high energy, makes them a better fit for homes with fenced yards where they can run. They can adapt well to larger apartments as long as plenty of time is dedicated to ensuring they get enough exercise, mental stimulation, and attention every day. A bored, ignored, or under-exercised German Shepherd can often become a destructive one. They also can be sensitive to their surroundings and large gatherings can be off-putting. With a longer coat, they tend to prefer cooler climates and are sensitive to heat. The German Shepherd is a generally healthy breed, but there are some potential health concerns and good breeding practices make a big difference. Potential health concerns to be aware of in a German Shepherd include hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia , and degenerative myelopathy. Reputable breeders will screen their dogs to avoid passing preventable issues to puppies. So, make sure you are asking about the health and genetic history of both parents. You can also ask about any health tests or clearances that have been done. As a barrel-chested breed, the German Shepherd is also at risk for bloat. While the German Shepherd is highly intelligent and highly trainable, they are generally not recommended for novice owners. If you are a novice dog owner, enroll in puppy training classes or enlist the help of a professional dog trainer; not just for your dog, but for yourself as well. Training assistance will help you grow in experience and build a strong bond between you and your German Shepherd puppy, which is essential. Also, the GSD has a thirst for training and fulfillment. They get bored easily and especially with repetition, so continued training with your German Shepherd throughout their life will be necessary. German Shepherds have a medium-to-long double coat. They will shed year-round and heavier as seasons change. Brushing a few times a week is usually sufficient; brushing daily is even better and your GSD will likely love you for it. Bathing is occasional on an as-needed basis. Ear checks weekly with careful cleanings as needed can help prevent ear infections. German Shepherds are high-energy working dogs. Not only do they require a lot of daily activity, but they also are a herding breed that was made to run, guard, and observe, so they need a job to do to be happy and healthy. Daily walks plus playtime, time to run, and other activities are usually enough for a GSD, but they will likely be up for more activity if you are. With their versatility and athleticism, you can try a lot of different activities when puppies finish growing and they are cleared for higher-impact things. A fully-grown German Shepherd usually stands inches tall and weighs pounds. German Shepherds generally live for years on average. Corporal Duncan brought him back to the United States and Rin-Tin-Tin became one of the most famous dog actors in history. Featured German Shepherd Article.
