Understanding German Shepherd Puppy Nutritional Needs All dogs require nutritious, satisfying, and healthy food and every breed have their special diet. For maximum energy and health, there are factors to consider when deciding what to feed your German Shepherd: Size considerations- the AKC breed standard says that a German Shepherd can go to 26 inches tall at the shoulder. Females can be around 49 to 71 pounds while Males can be around 66 to 88 pounds. This means that they have a big appetite hence it is good to find quality food for them. They grow pretty fast hence they need specific nutrients for specific stages. Activity level- German shepherds are muscular, active, and agile which contributes to higher caloric needs to be complemented by feeding them a high-quality diet. Health consideration- GSDs are prone to many diseases hence a healthy diet will prevent problems. For example, arthritis that is caused by hip and elbow dysplasia can be mitigated through an excellent diet. Ensure that your GSD diet contains proteins, fats, carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals. How long does it take for your dog to be full? Is your dog still hungry after eating his portion? German shepherds normally take anywhere from 10 minutes to 15 minutes to finish the meal, given that you followed the proper feeding guidelines properly. If your dog shows signs of slow eating, we recommend sending them to your vet. If you think your dog is already full before finishing his portion, there is no problem. However, if your dog is still hungry after finishing the meal, consider sending him to your vet. This is because this can be a sign of a serious health issue involving their digestive system. They encourage the puppy to chew hence preventing periodontal diseases or tartar. Kibble is less expensive to buy and can stay fresh for longer. See also German Shepherd Gestation Period And Pregnancy Wet food is also essential for puppies because they allow puppies to feel fuller with less food. If your GSD need to shed a few pounds, wet food is a good way to reduce their caloric intake. Wet food is easier to digest, hence they are good for German shepherds with sensitive stomachs. Wet food is appetizing and keeps the puppy hydrated. You need to understand why your puppy cannot eat because it will help you determine the way to deal with the issue. There is no need to worry if the puppy lost appetite shortly and goes back to normal eating without any sign of illness. If the puppy loses appetite and takes a few days without improvement, take your puppy to the vet to find the problem because your dog might be sick. If the vet finds that the puppy is sick, they may suggest a special diet that will boost their immunity and give them extra nutrients to better their recovery. The puppy may have stopped eating because of behavioral issues; therefore, you may need to feed them same time to get a routine. Treats and human food that is given to the puppy may need to be reduced and also you can try different kinds of food. The German shepherd is a medium dog breed according to the AKC. Therefore, free-feeding is not a good idea. For the German shepherds, feeding schedules work better. If the puppies are free-fed the puppy may eat the leftover at any time even when they are not hungry. Sticking to a feeding routine help the puppy to stay healthy and prevent obesity. When you have a schedule, managing their weight and house training will improve. The puppy usually relieves themselves around 15 minutes after eating or drinking, therefore, when they feed at the same time every day and are taken outside after a while, accidents will be minimized. A raw diet is good for German shepherds. A raw diet help improves vitality and energy. The puppy gets healthy white teeth with an increased lifespan and reduced shedding as well as a stronger immune system. Raw meat is a great source of protein and an optimal diet. It is like keto to humans because it allows the puppy to reach their total capacity and good health. Dogs are naturally carnivorous, hence raw diet aligns with their natural needs. However, you should speak to your vet before putting your puppy on a raw food diet. The majority of commercially available kibble food is balanced and complete, and of high quality for your German shepherd puppy. Human supplements often contain harmful substances to animals and are unregulated or minimally effective. Therefore, never give human supplements to your German shepherd puppy. But they can eat small amounts of cooked chicken or turkey, plain cooked sweet potatoes or carrots, plain yogurt, and small amounts of fruits like apples or bananas without getting sick. Talk to a vet for advice on how to feed your German Shepherd puppy a healthy and balanced diet. These include chocolate, fatty foods, coffee, alcohol, chives, avocado, onions, nuts, grapes and raisins, garlic, raw or undercooked meat, and bones. These foods can cause a wide range of health problems, from stomachaches to more serious problems like pancreatitis or kidney failure. Some foods that people eat may have a lot of sodium or sugar, which can also be bad for dogs. How much food to give an older German Shepherd will depend on their needs and how much they move around. But as dogs get older, they tend to slow down and may need less food to stay at a healthy weight. As a general rule, an older German Shepherd needs about 2 to 3 cups of food per day, which should be divided between two meals. A German Shepherd that is getting older should eat high-quality senior dog food that is made for their age and size. Senior dogs might also benefit from getting smaller meals more often. If your German Shepherd puppy seems to always be hungry, you should look at what they eat and how often they eat. Make sure they eat enough for their age, weight, and level of activity. Puppies grow quickly and need more calories than adult dogs, so it is possible that they are not getting enough food. Also, make sure you feed them high-quality puppy food that is right for their age and size. If you are worried about how hungry they are or how much they weigh, you should talk to a vet to rule out any health problems and make a plan for feeding them. The amount of dry food you should feed your German Shepherd will depend on several factors, including their age, weight, and activity level. Puppies: Feed times the recommended amount on the food label. Adult dogs: Feed times the recommended amount on the food label. Active dogs: Feed times the recommended amount on the food label. Senior dogs: Feed times the recommended amount on the food label. If the dog is obviously overweight or underweight, adjust accordingly. If you can feel most of the ribs without squeezing your fingers in between them — try 1 cup per day. This is a decent starting point for a growing large breed puppy that needs the extra calories to grow big and strong. If you can feel most of the ribs AND see its waist — try 3 cups per day. This is perfect for an adult German Shepherd which needs extra calories due to being very active. With this amount, it will be able to maintain its weight, but not gain any extra fat. If you can feel all the ribs and see their waist — try 3. This is a good amount for a very active German Shepherd which needs extra calories to maintain a healthy weight. This should be sufficient for an adult German Shepherd which is quite active. If you can feel all the ribs and see their waist — try 5 cups per day. This is a good amount for an extremely active German Shepherd which needs extra calories to maintain lean muscle mass. For example, when my dog was a puppy, he would feel all ribs and see his waist when eating 2 cups of food per day. However, as he got older and larger, I had to increase the amount — even though I could still feel most of the ribs! He maintained around .Although there are lots of opinions on how much food your shepherds needs, these guidelines work for me and my German Shepherds. Everyone is different though, so you will have to adjust accordingly if necessary — this guide should help you until you find the ideal amount. If your dog is a very active one it may need more food depending on its activity level. Always be sure to give plenty of water since dry kibble can dehydrate the animal over time. However, this amount will vary depending on the size, age, and activity level of your dog. Puppies and young dogs, for example, generally need more water than adult German Shepherds. And working dogs or those who exercise frequently may require even more. This is because they can easily hydrate themselves if given free access to water. However, you still need to remember some things. For example, take note that your dog will need to drink 6 ounces of water per day for every 3. Depending on the temperature and activeness, this amount can increase. Lastly, make sure you take extra care in providing water access to your German shepherd. The most preferable way is to fill a bowl with a moderate amount of water, not too much. The feeding amount, frequency, length, and water requirements can always be changed. If you have no time to visit your vet, the following topic may help you. How Much Should A 1-year-old German Shepherd Eat A 1-year-old German Shepherd should eat about two and a half to three cups of food each day, broken up into two or three meals. Pointers for Feeding German Shepherds Improper feeding practices can lead to serious health problems for German shepherds. An owner is responsible for taking into consideration the age and weight of a German shepherd before feeding them. When feeding a german shepherd puppy that is four to six months old, you must give them two meals a day that comprises around eight ounces and five ounces. When feeding a German shepherd puppy that is between seven and twelve months old, the meal amounts should be increased to ten ounces for each meal. This amount should be split into three smaller meals. This is regardless of whether they are active or not. Yep, German shepherds can gain weight regardless of whether they exercise or not. If you think your dog is gaining too much weight, you can split their daily calories into four or five smaller meals. Some people prefer using dry dog food, while others would choose canned dog food. Whatever you choose for your German shepherd is usually okay, but canned food tends to contain more moisture than dry food which may lead to bladder stones in certain dogs. However, when it comes to the amount of dog food you feed your German shepherd, canned food leads to more obesity than dry food. If your German shepherds are over five years old, you must give them an extra meal. This additional meal should comprise around four ounces of food so they can easily digest it during their older age. When feeding a German shepherd puppy, you must know how to correctly measure their food amount. Be accurate when following the proper measurements; otherwise, it could lead to your dog gaining too much weight. Use measuring cups that are specifically made for dry food. If you use any other type of measuring device, it might lead to your dog eating too much or too little food. You must not feed your German shepherd until they are full, but allow them to eat until they are slightly satiated. Do not serve unlimited food; give them about two to three cups of food per day. If you are unsure whether or not your German shepherd is obese, check its waistline. If they have a thick waist and their stomach looks like a sphere, then that is a clear sign that your German shepherd is obese. Never let them finish their meal if they are still hungry; otherwise, you will encourage them to gorge on their food. Your German shepherd must always have access to fresh clean water, so you should ensure they can drink it whenever necessary. Feeding Guidelines by Age Before proceeding with the following points, remember that age is not the only determining factor in a German shepherd feeding chart. Make sure to consider all the content in this blog post as well. It is recommended that you slowly let them adapt first. This can be their regular food from now on. This includes fruits, bones, and more. You should also avoid giving them your leftovers. However, they will need time to adapt. You should also consider feeding your German shepherd foods that can be gnawed and chewed. This is so they can develop their jaws, teeth, and gums. This will result in less feeding amount and frequency. Feeding Guidelines by Weight German shepherds can be of different weight ranges. An average weighted German shepherd 35 kilograms will then need calories per day. This only applies to German shepherds that do not exercise or are inactive. Active German Shepherds: In the case of active German shepherds that exercise regularly, every 1 kilogram equals 55 calories per day. So an average weighted German shepherd will require calories per day to be able to function properly. Take note, however, that this calculation may be affected if the German shepherd has a health disorder concerned with metabolism or digestion. German Shepherd Puppies vs. Adults Guidelines Our last topic involves the difference between a puppy and an adult. The following are some of the facts that recent studies have proven: Puppies have higher energy levels than adults. This means they need to eat more than adult German shepherds. German shepherds will need higher protein and fat content at an early age. The amount of fat and protein will decrease as they grow older. Puppies cannot tolerate too many nutrients. Ingesting extra minerals and vitamins may lead to serious health disorders. Meanwhile, adults are only risking being overweight when taking in more than intended. German Shepherds usually have a good appetite and can eat a lot, especially when they are young and growing. But their food intake should be balanced and right for their age, weight, and level of activity to keep them from getting too much food and getting fat. As they age, they should usually eat less quickly. Most of the time, bones that have been cooked and ground up completely may be safe to eat. Instead, give them dog-made chew toys or treats. Can German Shepherds Be Vegetarians? Since German Shepherds consume meat, it follows that they must consume a significant amount of animal protein in order to get all of the necessary nutrients. Although while it is feasible to offer a dog a vegetarian or vegan diet, owners of German Shepherds should avoid doing so since it increases the likelihood that their dogs will not get all of the nutrients that they need. After talking about the feeding amount, frequency, and lengths of a German shepherd, you can now easily plan how much, how many times, and how long you feed your dog. You even learned how to hydrate your German shepherd the proper way. Lastly, we talked about the difference between a puppy and an adult in terms of feeding. Peter My name is Peter and I am a dog lover. I have two German Shepherd dogs, one of which is called Biscuit because his coat is very light with brown patches. My wife and I moved from the UK to Ohio where we now live with our two daughters. We love squash on weekends and following the English Premier League closely! Previous Article. Split that daily amount up between all meals. For example, if your 3-month-old GSD puppy is a male and weighs 30 pounds, you should feed him approximately 2 cups per day. Since she no longer needs the extra calories to help support her fast growth period, you can safely reduce her feedings to 2 or 3 meals per day. While she should still be eating puppy food at this point, you may consider purchasing a bag of her eventual adult formula. You can use individual kibbles from the adult formula for treats or training rewards. This will help her get used to the new flavor and texture. Around 9 months of age, you can begin slowly adding a small amount of the adult formula into her puppy food, though she should still be eating primarily puppy chow. Only your vet will be able to tell you when your dog has reached maturity and can be safely moved to adult food. So, make sure you are in close contact with your vet to be sure that your feeding plan is individualized for your specific dog. Adult dog food will have a different ratio of calcium, protein, phosphorus, and other nutrients than puppy food does. Feeding an adult dog a puppy formula can cause obesity as well as put too much strain on kidneys and other vital organs. Long term use of inappropriate food for an adult dog can have catastrophic consequences. That said, there is no need to panic if your adult GSD eats a bowl of puppy food now and then. Adult German Shepherds should be fed twice a day. Again, bloat is a real problem for large breed dogs, and large meals seem to be a big cause of this. I feed my adult dogs this particular blend for a number of reasons. The blend is designed specifically with German Shepherds in mind, as it uses high-quality, animal-based nutrients to counter the extra stress put on the joints of GSDs and to help the development strong lean muscle to keep your dog in peak physical condition. You really can see the difference. This is evident by the fast decline in health, joint flexibility, and energy in older large breed dogs compared to same-age smaller breeds. When your GSD moves from the adult life stage to senior, you need to adjust her diet. Large breeds reach the older stage not quite senior, but close around half of their assumed life expectancy. Inevitably, your GSD will need to switch over to a senior diet. Older large breed dogs have lower energy needs. Older dogs also tend to slow down their digestion, so an increase in fiber might be a good choice for your senior GSD. Do be sure to confirm this with your vet, however. Not all foods are created equal. For treats, senior dogs should avoid calorie-dense milk bones and high-salt or fatty treats. Opt for healthy, whole-food treats such as apple slices or carrots. Some senior dogs begin to develop health conditions that will require special care. This is often a result of poor nutrition early in life, but can sometimes simply be genetics and old age catching up with them. But for GSDs with health issues such as kidney disease and joint pain, diet can play an even bigger role in the quality of their lives. Getting a personalized recommendation from your veterinarian is worth the time, expense, and effort. These charts can seem pretty straightforward at first glance. Instead, use them as a starting point. Observe your dog, see how he looks and feels, and note any changes in his bathroom habits, weight, or energy level. Adjust his meals accordingly. Generally speaking, they talk about daily intake, not per meal. It means to split that 3 cups total over the entire day. If your dog eats 3 times per day, that would be 1 cup at each meal for a total daily intake of 3 cups. To further confuse dog parents, some manufacturers do list per-meal serving sizes, not the total daily intake! In these cases, if you read it incorrectly, you would end up underfeeding your dog. To help mitigate some of this confusion, it may be helpful to ask your vet how many calories your dog should be consuming each day. Then you can check the calorie content in the dog food and measure things from there. Raw Diets, Cooking for Dogs, and Other Alternative Feeding This article has been focusing mainly on commercially available dry kibble since that is what most pet parents ultimately choose for their dogs. However, there are many dog owners that choose to feed alternative diets. These include raw diets and cooking regular people food for dogs. There are many viable options for feeding your healthy German Shepherd, but there are just as many harmful fads, too. As with commercial foods, be sure to speak with your vet before starting your dog on a raw diet or home-cooking her meals. Human supplements are often unregulated, minimally effective, and often contain substances harmful to animals. Never use a human supplement for your German Shepherd. Final Thoughts What you feed your German Shepherd is just as important as how much you feed them. Pay special attention to the first 4 or 5 ingredients listed on the back of the packaging. Choose high-quality, safety-tested foods with clear ingredient and nutrition labels. The two most obvious goals of feeding your German Shepherd are for health and growth. How fast do German Shepherds grow? German Shepherds are medium-large dogs and therefore grow at a fast rate over the first six to seven months leading up to adolescence. Adult German Shepherds are 22 to 26 inches tall and weigh 50 to 95 pounds. Reputable weight charts suggest your German Shepherd puppy will have attained three-quarters of their final weight over these first six to seven months. This is A LOT of growing to do in a short amount of time — when you brought your puppy home, it was probably only eight inches tall and weighed around 15 pounds. By 12 to 15 months old, a German Shepherd is within an inch or less of their adult height. Therefore, your male German Shepherd will be 23 to 25 inches tall and weigh 59 to 93 pounds by his first birthday. How does diet affect the health of growing Shepherds? Recently it has come to light that a proper diet for puppies does more than prevent malnutrition. As part of this proper diet, there are many things that should never be fed to German Shepherds. Orthopedic Problems Many orthopedic problems such as hip and elbow dysplasia have a strong hereditary component. However, people often discount the role of diet in bone developmental issues. Merely creating an oversized puppy, as is often the case for show animals and people fixated on large dogs, can lead to several painful disorders: Hip dysplasia Elbow dysplasia Panosteitis — Generalized inflammation of the long bones in puppies; common in German Shepherds. Overnutrition and over-supplementation of certain vitamins and minerals lead to paradoxical malnutrition of the bone, and subsequently improper development. Nutritional experts have modified their recommendations regarding the diets of large-breed dogs. Many nutritionists and veterinarians advocate feeding German Shepherds and other large-breed puppies an adult or professionally-formulated homemade diet to limit the occurrence and severity of developmental problems. Pet food manufacturers have caught onto the concept of overnutrition in puppies, and most carry special diets for large-breed puppies. Also, do not supplement your puppy with vitamins, minerals, or proteins without veterinarian direction — their excessive use will disrupt bone and cartilage growth and harm the growth plates. Many people use the food bag as a starting point to decide how much to feed their dogs. However, a label on commercial food is one of the easiest ways to overfeed your growing puppy. Feeding your puppy involves regularly evaluating and tracking their weight. You should be able to assess how close your pup is to their ideal weight just by looking at them. Silhouette from the side — a slight tuck. Pat the ribcage where the abdomen slightly lifts towards the hips. From above — Clear waist; should see an hourglass shape from rib cage to hips When you palpate — You should feel the ribs under a thin layer of fat without having to prod very hard. Puppies will vary in their body scores and may change rapidly within a few days. Pups often lose their abdominal tuck right after a meal. Puppies under 16 weeks old commonly have a pot-bellied appearance without much abdominal tuck. Thin dogs will show more visibility of ribs, waist, and pelvis without appearing emaciated or unhealthy. If your puppy eats well but fails to grow or gain sufficient weight, consult a medical professional. German Shepherds can be susceptible to rare cases of pituitary gland dwarfism or a deficiency of enzyme production from the pancreas. Volume The easiest way to determine how much food to give your Shepherd pup is to figure out how many cups they need in a day and divide it by the number of feedings. German Shepherds eat about four cups of food daily from 16 weeks of age to nine months or a year regardless of weight. The volume accounts for the relatively high caloric requirements of the young growing animal. German Shepherds over a year old may need as much as five to eight cups of dog food. Other references, however, use weight rather than age. Pups eat one cup of food daily per 15 to 20 pounds. Dogs over pounds receive five cups of kibble plus an additional half a cup for every extra 20 pounds. Like all models, more active dogs need to eat more food — make adjustments up or down based on body scoring. You can estimate the volume to feed your German Shepherd pup once you find the conversion rate. Dry dog food bags and wet food cans usually have the kilocalorie equivalence of each cup of the product. The number of calories you feed your Shepherd depends on how close to the adult weight they are. Once your puppy reaches six weeks old, you may still have to feed it a mash but can decrease meals to four per day. German Shepherd puppies between the ages of 12 and 16 weeks can eat three to four times daily, while most dogs over four months of age decrease to a frequency of two to three times daily. Centering a few potty breaks around meals that stimulate their intestinal tracts helps develop consistent habits. GDV Your German Shepherd puppy will begin to develop a deeper chest combined with significant size by four to six months of age. Both physical characteristics put your puppy at additional risk of gastric dilatation and volvulus compared to smaller breeds. Four months is the age at which most pups will see a significant increase in their meal sizes. Studies have linked large meals with GDV , or bloat, life-threatening distension, and rotation of the stomach. Increasing the number of feedings greatly reduces the incidence of GDV. We recommend at least two meals a day for your dog, even as your Shepherd approaches adulthood. How much to feed a German Shepherd puppy is part of a broader equation that includes avoiding overfeeding, calculating portion sizes, and scheduling appropriate mealtimes. However, a fat or pudgy puppy is not a look anyone should encourage. The puppy may appear to be in good shape, but you need to feel the ribs to be certain. Four Months You can really start to see the amount the pup has grown compared to the eight-week-old puppy! To get a better idea of what to expect with a young GSD, feel free to watch this video! It illustrates the rapid growth rate of the German Shepherd and touches on diets as well. Recommended reading. The best food for German Shepherd puppies in their first two to four months of life is milk from their mother. This specialised care is usually left to German Shepherd breeders or veterinarians, who are knowledgeable in caring for pups with no mother to nurse from. If you have recently brought a German Shepherd puppy into your family, they are most likely older than 8 weeks, and so have started to eat solid foods. Before the four month mark, it is advised to include some dry food in their diet. You can do this in a few simple steps: Mix some dry food with specially formulated puppy milk to form a soft mixture. You can feed your puppy this mixture three to four times a day. Over time, reduce the amount of milk you include in this mixture, until they are at the point where they are happily eating dry foods. Read on to learn how much you should feed your German Shepherd puppy as they get older. With this rapid growth can come some risks. German Shepherds are susceptible to bone growth disorders, like hip dysplasia, that can start in puppyhood. They will be very active in their adolescent years, and so should be fed with this in mind. The transition from puppy food to adult food should happen between 12 and 24 months of age. This is because, being a larger breed who grows very quickly, you want to ensure that you are feeding them according to their large breed needs. Remember that the more active the pup, the more food they require. While following feeding guidelines is important to avoid over and underfeeding, you can adjust the amounts of food you provide to your dog based on level of activity. If you are unsure, it is always best to ask your vet for guidance. You need to take special care when considering what you should feed your German Shepherd puppy, as they require different nutrients compared to their adult counterparts. For puppies, this amount will often be two of three times higher, as they are more active and growing quickly. German Shepherd puppies need to eat food that is high in proteins and fats. Carbohydrates are also essential for supporting your active pup. Aside from nutritionally complete dry puppy food, German Shepherd puppies can benefit from the extra protein that raw meat can provide them with, such as lean beef, turkey, chicken, or fish. However, they can also be at risk of gastric dilatation or volvulus, or GDV. Certain dog breeds can be more susceptible to GDV; particularly deep chested breeds including German Shepherds. GDV can occur when a dog bloats a few hours after eating a meal. Though the exact causes of GDV are not known, grains and cereals are suspected to be contributors. The amount of food you give your German Shepherd is determined by their weight, energy levels, and age. For most adult German Shepherds, between 1, to 2, calories per day from high quality food sources is ideal. Female German Shepherds, which tend to be about 8 kilos lighter than males, may need less food, as will less active dogs. Dogs who need less food, whether they are less active or simply older, will usually still need around 1, and 1, per day. You may want to alter the amount of food you are feeding your German Shepherd based on how calorically dense their food is. German Shepherds should be fed twice a day, once in the morning and once in the evening. Their daily allotment of food should be split evenly between these two meals. For most dogs, it is recommended that you exercise your dog before meal times to assist with potty training. However, some dogs who are at risk of GDV may benefit from exercise after eating, to aid with digestion. You should also try to give your German Shepherd a high quality food that is specially designed for larger or working breeds, especially if they are very active. For example, less active senior dogs will need to eat less food as they will not be burning calories as quickly as a lively little puppy will. Senior dogs may benefit from a higher fibre and lower calorie diet. Your dog may also develop chronic or short term medical conditions that require specially formulated food. German Shepherds can be particularly susceptible to skin disease or allergies, including canine atopic dermatitis, bacterial skin infections, flea allergy dermatitis, forms of contact dermatitis, or scabies. If your dog develops a skin issue, it is often a sign that they may be suffering from a form of food sensitivity. If you are unsure about what you should feed your German Shepherd, you should always consult your vet as they will be able to determine if your dog is suffering from any allergies or chronic health issues: creating a nutritional plan to help keep your dog healthy and happy for years to come. Part of figuring out what you should feed your German Shepherd includes deciding between wet, dry, or a raw food diet. Wet food for German Shepherds is often high in protein and fat, and is better at keeping your dog hydrated than other food sources. A raw diet can be a good option for your German Shepherd as you have more control over the kinds of food and amount of nutrients your pup is consuming. For this reason, raw diets require a lot more work on your part as an owner. Whatever you decide to feed your German Shepherd, all dogs need a similar ratio of nutrients in their diets. The amount of food you feed your dog should be determined by their activity levels, age, weight, breed, and size. Any meals prepared for your dog need to contain the right balance of nutrients. You should also be extra careful not to introduce your dog to foods that are harmful to their health. While we might enjoy the taste of nuts, artificial sweeteners, alcohol and onions, these can be toxic for dogs and can cause serious illness and even death. German Shepherds in particular need plenty of exercise as they are a large working breed with a lot of energy. No matter how old your German Shepherd is, it is important to keep to a consistent feeding schedule. A feeding schedule can help you keep track of any changes in behaviour around food that might signal illness or physiological stress.

Kenshei Pugs mainly breed for the purposes of producing show dogs, but they do on occasion have puppies available to go to new loving homes. They love their dogs and show commitment to the betterment of the breed in everything they do. But how can you spot reputable breeders when you start searching for a Pug puppy? Here are some tips to help you out. A good breeder will… 1. Issue a health guarantee Make sure that your breeder of choice offers a health guarantee. A reputable Pug breeder will write up a binding health guarantee for all of their puppies. The guarantee protects you against any genetic defects or diseases. It shows that the breeder is confident that their puppies are bred according to best practices. This means if you can no longer look after your pup for some reason, you will be expected to return the puppy to the breeder rather than taking them to a shelter. Provide standard health clearances Your breeder should have full health clearances for both parent Pugs. Good breeders often provide some early health-check clearances for their pups too, although some health clearances simply cannot be carried on such young pups. Issue a written bill of sale Reputable breeders offer written bills of sale to all of their new Pug parents. This bill of sale should be signed and will outline all the roles and responsibilities to be taken on by the buyer and seller as part of the transaction. Vaccinate their puppies All puppies should be up to date on their vaccinations before being homed with new families. Your breeder of choice should be able to provide evidence of these vaccinations. Reputable breeders welcome prospective parents into their homes to see the puppies. Follow age guidelines Puppies should never leave the litter before 8 weeks of age. Any breeder offering pups for adoption before this time is not following best practices. In fact, this could be quite damaging for the puppy developmentally. A reputable breeder will keep their pups at home until eight to twelve weeks so that they can be properly socialized and spend that crucial time with their mother and litter-mates. Answer your questions Last, but not least, a reputable breeder will be knowledgeable. In most cases, they will also want to ask you plenty of questions to ensure that their precious pups are going to good homes. We have a strict selection process that takes a variety of factors into account. That way we can ensure that only the best breeders end up on our lists. This way we know that our chosen breeders offer genetically sound and healthy puppies. Health testing shows a commitment to the health and wellbeing of each Pug. Contact information Any breeder that does not offer up their contact information is a big red flag. A reputable breeder will make it easy for you to get in contact with them by providing telephone numbers, email addresses, and they will usually have a well-established website as well. It shows a commitment to breeding best practices. Event participation Breeders who also compete in doggie events are often some of the best. Because these people tend to be dog lovers par excellence. They live and breathe for their Pugs and are proud to show them off in public. They are also more likely to have a high level of breed knowledge — an excellent sign for a breeder. Breed club membership There are lots of breed clubs out there that breeders can register with. These clubs have rules, regulations, and membership fees. If your breeder is registered with the Pug Dog Club of America, this is a great sign showing commitment to the Pug breed. Recognition awards Lastly, we look out for awards! Institutions like the AKC recognize the efforts and achievements of top breeders. The very best will be awarded the AKC recognition of merit award. During this time we recommend getting everything ready before your new arrival rattles through the front door. Your puppy will need: a crate for sleeping and training during the early days quality puppy-grade food a leash and harness plenty of toys You may also wish to purchase a puppy gate if there are areas of your home that you want to keep your Pug away from. This is all about making your home as safe as possible for your new arrival. Make sure anything that could potentially cause harm to your pup is removed. Clear your schedule Having a Pug puppy is a bit like having a human baby. So make sure to clear your schedule and get all of those errands done ahead of time! Once they arrive… 4. Avoid crowds Hold your excitement. That means no crowds. Try to keep the home environment as stress-free as possible so that your puppy can settle in and start to feel part of the family. Crate training is the first step. Lay down a regular routine from the get to and your Pug will be good as gold in no time.

Labradoodle generations can seem like a complicated topic. If you are hoping to add a puppy to your family you have probably already wondered what size dog you would like, what breed, whether you should get a male or female. And, if you have decided on a Labradoodle, now you have to wrap your mind around generations? So, knowing the most about your potential puppy will help you determine if it is a good match. This article will help clear up the mystery and give you a better understanding of your furry best friend! Why Do Labradoodle Generations Matter? It is all about the DNA! Generation refers to the ancestry of a dog, which influences both physical characteristics and temperament. Genetics also play a role in potential health issues your Labradoodle may be at risk for. Although responsible breeding can reduce the risk of some health issues, there is never a guarantee. This simple step can protect you from sudden and often expensive heath issues that require veterinary care. Labeling Labradoodle Generations Understanding the terminology used when labeling generations is key. Every Labradoodle generation begins with the letter F. What does the number mean? The number is the generation of the dog. So, 1 is first generation, 2 is 2nd generation, 3 is 3rd generation, etc. Sometimes you will see a B at the end of the generation. This indicates a backcross. Typically this means that the Labradoodle was bred back to a purebred Poodle. There may be times when they are backcrossed to a Labrador Retriever, but as this is very uncommon, this article will only use B to refer to a breeding back to a Poodle. Labradoodle Generations Chart This table provides another helpful reference as you learn even more about Labradoodle generations. Do remember that the DNA percentages here are theoretical estimates. What is an F1 Labradoodle? It is a first generation cross of a purebred Labrador Retriever and a purebred Poodle. This first generation has a large, diverse DNA pool. They can have the shorter, coarser coat of the Labrador Retriever, the curly coat of the Poodle, or something in between! While an F1 Labradoodle will likely shed less than the average Labrador Retriever, there is a high likelihood that they will shed at least a little. Keep in mind that even this moderate shedding can trigger some allergies. If you need an allergy-friendly dog, the F1 Labradoodle is usually not the best generation to choose. The upside to genetic diversity is that it lowers the risk of genetic health issues common in purebreds. Mixed breeds in general are at a lower risk of genetic diseases. F1 Labradoodle Price This generation is usually the least expensive. Prices will vary widely depending on breeder reputation, location, size and color. You should expect to pay more if you want a Toy or Mini Labradoodle. F1 Labradoodles are the most frequent generation found in rescues and shelters across the country , so you may be able to save a bit of money by adopting. Photo courtesy of rosie. What is an F1B Labradoodle? Well, we know that F1 means a first generation Labrador Retriever and Poodle cross. So, an F1B would be a first generation Labradoodle crossed back with a Poodle. As mentioned earlier it could mean the Labradoodle was bred back to a Labrador Retriever, but this is not common. By backcrossing to the Poodle, the F1B Labradoodle will lose some of its genetic diversity. However, the advantage to backcrossing is a more predictable coat. For allergy sufferers who are seeking a lower-shedding dog that is more likely to be hypoallergenic, the F1B Labradoodle is a safer choice. You should expect to pay more if you want a Mini or Toy Labradoodle rather than a Standard Labradoodle. Photo courtesy of dooditsalbus on Instagram. What is an F1BB Labradoodle? So, this is a litter bred with an F1B Labradoodle parent and a purebred Poodle parent. This generation is a great pick for allergy sufferers. While there is never a guarantee that a Labradoodle will be hypoallergenic or non-shedding, the more Poodle DNA, the higher the chances it will be. Because the F1BB Labradoodle is so close genetically to a Poodle, there will be less genetic diversity. F1BB Labradoodles will likely have more traits typical to Poodles. This includes both appearance and personality. While this more predictable coat is better for allergy sufferers, it also can be higher-maintenance and will need regular brushing to maintain it. Owners of this generation will especially want to invest in a quality brush like the Chris Christensen Big G Slicker Brush. Prices will vary widely depending on location, the reputation of the breeder, color, and size. Photo courtesy of smalltowndoods on Instagram. What is an F2 Labradoodle? The simple answer is a second generation Labradoodle, but it can get a bit more confusing than that! F2 Labradoodles are not super common. One reason for this is when you breed dogs with such a vast DNA pool, it is nearly impossible to predict the traits that will be passed on to the puppies. Often there are puppies in an F2 Labradoodle litter that are closer to a Labrador Retriever in personality and appearance. If allergies are not a concern, the F2 may be a good generation for you, especially if you prefer Labrador Retriever traits. F2 Labradoodle Price This generation is often less expensive in comparison because of the unpredictability of their traits. Prices will vary widely depending on factors like color, size, location, and the reputation of the breeder. Photo courtesy of the. What is an F2B Labradoodle? This is a breeding of a second generation Labradoodle to a purebred Poodle. So, an F2 Labradoodle is backcrossed which adds a B to the generation label to a Poodle. While the traits of an F2 Labradoodle tend to be fairly unpredictable, backcrossing it with the Poodle results in a bit more consistency. This will increase the chance of the puppies having a more allergy-friendly coat with less or no shedding. It also means that this generation is likely to have a curlier coat, which is higher maintenance. Like the F1B generation, this is a good choice for allergy sufferers. Some breeders may refer to this generation as a Multigen Labradoodle. This label may be applied to any Labradoodle beyond an F2. If you are looking for a Toy or Mini Labradoodle, expect a price towards the higher end of that range. What is an F2BB Labradoodle? In other words, this means an F2B Labradoodle is bred to a purebred Poodle. This generation can also be referred to as a Multigen Labradoodle more on that later! This makes the F2BB Labradoodle a great choice for people wanting a low-shedding, allergy-friendly dog, as those traits are highly likely, though not guaranteed. Photo courtesy of toff. What is an F3 Labradoodle? It is a third generation Labradoodle, also referred to as a Multigen Labradoodle. Like the F2 generation, the F3 Labradoodle does not offer consistency or predictable traits. So, if you need a specific type of coat, the F3 Labradoodle would not be a good choice. F3 Labradoodle Price F3 Labradoodles are rare, but also not one of the generations with a super high demand. As such, prices can vary widely. What is a Multigen Labradoodle? Also referred to as a Multigenerational Labradoodle, this refers to any Labradoodle that is greater than an F2 generation. If you find a litter of Multigen Labradoodles, the breeder should be able to tell you the specific generation. Whether your future dog falls on the higher or lower end of that range depends on location, breeder, size, color, and other factors. Which is better, the F1 vs F1B Labradoodle? This is all a matter of perspective! If you have fallen in love with that classic Labradoodle appearance, then an F1 might be your top choice. The genetic diversity of the F1 also offers a lower chance of genetic health issues from popping up down the road. If allergies are a concern, the F1B is by far a safer bet. Since this generation is closer genetically to a Poodle, it will greatly increase the odds that your puppy will inherit the non-shedding and hypoallergenic coat. F1 Labradoodles tend to be easier to breed and offer more predictable puppies than F2 Labradoodles. So, the quick answer to the F1 vs F2 Labradoodle question is that the F1 generation is usually a better choice. They can sometimes be a bit less expensive that F1 Labradoodles. Being backcrosses with purebred Poodles, they both offer fairly predictable traits, making them both good choices for allergy sufferers. More important than the specific generation you choose is the breeder. A responsible breeder will do extensive genetic testing to make sure they are limiting the risk of health concerns. Do your research on the breeder, talk to past puppy owners, and compare prices. These factors should be far more influential in your puppy selection than the slight difference between these two generations. What Generation Labradoodle is Best? After all, they may be a bit biased! To determine what generation Labradoodle is best for your family, you need to factor in allergies, shedding, appearance, cost, health, and personality. This will help you maximize the potential that your dog will be low or non-shedding. It also offers the greatest genetic diversity and a comparatively low price. Overall, finding a responsible breeder is just as important as which Labradoodle generation you choose. A good breeder will match up parents and do genetic testing to maximize the chance for healthy puppies. Pair good breeding practices with great pet insurance and you will be on your way to having a long, happy life with your Labradoodle puppy. Providing families with their new best friend. We are a hobby breeder located in west central Ohio about 45 minutes west of Columbus. Here at Henry AKC Goldens we pride ourselves in providing families with high quality puppies that are given the love and attention every puppy deserves. Our puppies range in color from creams to dark reds. We look forward to meeting new families and sharing our love for the golden retriever breed. About Us! My name is Emily Henry and my husband, Jerrod and myself started our family 17 years ago. We are raising our family on our dairy farm where we milk a little over cows, three times a day as well as crop farm 3, acres near Honda Marysville plant. While the dairy and hay making keeps my husband busy, the kids and I love spending time with our dogs and the puppies. They are all treated like family around here. If the kids are playing outside, you are bound to find our pups playing in the yard. If we are busy feeding calves, you are sure to find the dogs patiently waiting to lick up any extra calf milk that is not needed. If I go for a run, you will likely find one of them at the end of the leash. They have even been our "guard dogs" on 2 different instances of individuals coming to our door. They are known for their calm and gentle demeanor but they will alert and protect you when called to duty. After losing our beloved "farm dog" golden back in , we decided it was time to get a new dog in .At this time, we searched high and low, from 5 local humane societies to golden retriever rescues. To no avail, we were either not "qualified" to have a golden that was not fenced in nor were there any goldens at the local shelters. That is when my children decided to purchase Bella from a breeder. After much time, patience and research, we decided to take on breeding. This opportunity turned into something greater than we could have imagined. These girls have brought so much joy to our home. Although it is a lot of hard work, we cherish every moment and are blessed with the opportunity to provide families with their new best friend s. We look forward to meeting your family!! One of the most popular breeds in the United States, Golden Retrievers are eager to please and are great with children and other dogs. We also have partnered up with several other high quality breeders that raise mini goldendoodle pups that meet our strict genetic criteria and testing. So we usually have a good selection of very high quality puppies. View Our Available Puppies! Not all mini Goldendoodles are equal, there are a few different versions to choose from each having a little different genetic background based on the pups parents. We will explain all the differences in Mini Goldendoodle puppies and how they are bred below. We raise all versions of the mini goldendoodle breed. F1 Mini Goldendoodle Pups. A F1 puppy is also known as a First Generation puppy. The puppies mother is a Golden Retriever and the pups dad is a Mini Poodle. This version of mini goldendoodle usually has soft wavy or curly puppy fur. They will shed until they lose their puppy fur, after shedding they will shed a lot less, but will shed. This version is partially hypoallergenic and usually requires low maintenance. F1 mini goldendoodles usually need to be groomed every 6 months along with daily brushing to keep their curly hair from matting and getting tangled. The dogs usually grow up having great temperaments similar to golden retrievers. They usually get about inches high at the shoulder and range in weight from pounds. F1b Mini Goldendoodle Pups. An F1b is known as a second-generation mini goldendoodle with the pups mother being already an F1 Goldendoodle and the pups dad being a mini poodle also. So the difference between F1 and F1b is that the mom is not a golden retriever but an actual F1 Goldendoodle. They also have very soft curly hair but with almost no shedding. This F1b version is semi-hypoallergenic and a better choice for anyone who has pet allergies. The F1b also should be brushed on a daily basis but will need to be groomed more frequently then a F1. A 6 to 8 week grooming schedule is recommended to keep their coat in perfect condition. F1b Mini goldendoodles get around 18 to 20 inches tall at the shoulders and range between pounds in weight. F1bb Mini Goldendoodle Pups. An F1bb goldendoodle is also known as a third-generation mini goldendoodle. This mini goldendoodle version has a coat more similar to a poodle than of a golden retriever. This is because the pup is more of a poodle than a retriever. Making it the very best version for anyone with pet allergies. A 6 to 8 week grooming schedule is required to help prevent knots or matting. This version is super intelligent and loving, and usually seems to have more energy than the other versions of Mini goldendoodles. This version is usually smaller in size, weighing around pounds and only getting inches tall at the shoulders. The smaller size makes them a great size for smaller homes and apartments. Daisy and Brock are a beautiful mother and son pair who love to snuggle together and cuddle. They are both sweet, happy, and friendly. They adore getting attention from anyone they meet during their walks and easily draw people in with their sunny personalities and soft silky coats. They have settled into an easy routine in their foster home and relish their walks every day and visits to the dog park. During their walks Brock clocks roughly twice the mileage of foster mom and Daisy with his side-to-side walking style. Neither is true! These pups love to live it up at the dog park where they show off their speed as Brock sprints and dives after his Kong frisbee, often grabbing it taco style, while Daisy relishes fetching an orange Chuck-It ball before eventually resting to chew on it. Brock is also a master at tug-of-war who has learned to drop it sometimes after repeated requests so it can be thrown again. Brock is extra special because he was born without a tail, which causes him to be incontinent. Inside the house he wears diapers and a belly band, and his incontinence is easily managed. When coming inside from a walk, Brock waits patiently for his diaper to be put on. Daisy and Brock took time to smell the roses and ponder life. While happy to be in a foster home, they would love to find their forever home. Please open your mind and your heart to considering adopting these two gorgeous pups. You will never regret your decision. A loving forever home with a secure fence and another dog in the home She wants to be your "All-American Girl! Carrie Underwood is so sweet and adorable. She is a bundle of tender kisses and has energy for days. She has been a great sister to the newest foster puppies that have come and gone, teaching them the art of playing with toys. Carrie's favorite thing to do is play chase with her K9 buddies. She runs fast and does figure 8's around the resident dogs, who don't even try to keep up with her. Her second favorite activity is napping with the resident Labs. She adores the older resident dogs and has learned great napping skills from them. She continues to work on her leash skills. Carrie has been quietly working on coming out of her shell and has undergone a transformation since arriving at her foster. She loves to curl up in the lap of her FM for naps and bedtime snuggles. She still has her moments of shyness around Foster Dad, but will now come voluntarily to the couch to sit beside him for attention. She's definitely gained lots of confidence. Carrie will need a home with another dog, preferably one who enjoys the same activity level. Carrie still has some shy moments but she is ready for her furever home, and she will steal the heart of anyone who wants to add a sweet yet energetic member to their family. Thank you to the following generous donors currently supporting Carrie's care: Amanda S. Sometimes called a Bull-Pug, the Miniature Bulldog is a cross between an English Bulldog and a Pug, Puggle, or French Bulldog to create a smaller size bulldog that will be perfect for your family. English Bulldogs were bred to bait, guard, and control bulls while Pugs have been companions to royals since about BC. They are peaceful and get along well with animals and people. You may find that some males are territorial or try to display dominance or aggression toward other male dogs. By nature, Bulldogs may occasionally display overprotective behaviors, but early training and socialization can help you manage it. They can be stubborn and slow during training, but they retain what they learn well. It frequently has a shortened muzzle like both parent breeds, which can sometimes lead to difficulty breathing especially in extreme temperatures. Eyes are dark, large, and round, and ears are thin and small and hang in a rose or button configuration. Mini Bulldogs have sleek and short, smooth and glossy coats that shed moderately but almost never tangle or mat. Black and fawn is the most common coloration, but you can also see brindle, red, and white. Typically this breed will be about 15 inches tall and weigh 15 to 45 pounds. They are not likely to ask for walks, and you may even find your pup to be lazy! But some daily exercise is crucial to keep these naturally thick-set dogs from becoming obese. Obesity runs in both parent breeds, so Mini Bulldogs are especially prone to putting on unhealthy weight. We recommend 30 minutes of activity per day and about 2 miles walking per week. Take care when exercising because their shortened muzzle makes them particularly sensitive to extreme temperatures. Up to date on shots and deworming. They will serves as perfect doggies in your home with kids and will easily get along to their new environment. Although these dogs are small, they are known to be full of love and affection, especially for their favorite humans. Although the American Kennel Club does not recognize them, they are recognized by other canine registries. They thrive on being with their favorite humans and enjoy nothing more than spending time with them. As long as they are properly socialized, their calm nature and sweet disposition mean they tend to get along with children, other dogs, and other pets. Although they are likely to bark to alert you of strangers, they also tend to be open to meeting new people and warm up quickly once introduced. The Mini Bulldog is a highly adaptable dog. They do well in apartments as well as larger homes with or without yards. They do best in moderate climates as they are very sensitive to heat and need some winter dog products to stay warm in the cold as well. Potential health concerns to be aware of in a Miniature Bulldog include cherry eye, hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia , and luxating patella. You can also ask about any health tests or clearances that have been done. Since both parents are brachycephalic, you can expect a Mini Bulldog to be a flat-faced, snub-nosed breed as well. This can contribute to difficulties breathing and regulating temperature, so you need to be careful about heat and overexertion with these dogs. The Miniature Bulldog is eager to please and will strive to get attention and praise from their families. Although they can have a little bit of a stubborn streak at times, they still tend to be a good fit for owners of all experience levels. Not only do they help reinforce training and keep it consistent, but they are also great opportunities to continue to socialize your puppy. Mini Bulldogs have short, dense coats that shed a low to moderate amount year-round. Brushing their coat weekly and the occasional bath is usually enough to keep their coat healthy and looking great. In addition to standard dog grooming brushes for this coat type, a rubber mitt can be a good tool to have on hand for easily removing excess fur. Nail trims once or twice a month are usually enough to keep nails from growing too long and causing issues. Weekly ear checks and carefully cleaning ears as needed can help prevent ear infections. Although their big, round eyes are adorable, they are also prone to damage from debris and can be sensitive. As a small dog breed, the Miniature Bulldog is more prone to developing dental disease. Daily brushing plus cleanings at the vet when needed are a good start. Although they will be energetic when they play, the Miniature Bulldog can also be one of the laziest dog breeds if you let them. Generally, they are happy to relax and cuddle with you, especially if there is food involved. Daily walks plus some playtime are usually enough for this dog. If they are interested in more activity or you need to encourage them to move more, there are safe ways to exercise flat-faced dogs that will let you give them the activity they need without overheating them. A fully-grown Mini Bulldog usually stands inches tall and weighs pounds. Miniature Bulldogs generally live for years on average. Featured Miniature Bulldog Article. american bulldog puppies reno nv - The link has been copied! Is it possible to tire out a German Shepherd? This is a question many Shepherd owners have found themselves asking on more than one occasion. German Shepherds are naturally high-energy dogs and few families are physically active enough to keep up with them. This begs the question, how much exercise does a German Shepherd need? And the next one, is it possible for them to get enough? While it may not seem like it sometimes, it is definitely possible for German Shepherds to get enough exercise. Overexercising can actually instigate the hip dysplasia problems that the breed is already prone to. Thus, it is important to know how much exercise your German Shepherd should be getting — and what kind. By the end of this article, you'll know exactly how to get your pup some quality, healthy exercise. Originally, they were bred for hard work on the farm, herding and guarding flocks of sheep. They would spend hours each day keeping the flock together, which requires a lot of running. Plus, they were constantly on alert for danger and ready to neutralize threats to their charges. These high-energy dogs need plenty of exercise to stay happy and healthy. For most dogs, this translates to at least 90 minutes of exercise each day. This can happen in bursts throughout the day and a wide variety of high-energy activities count. This includes taking them for walks or runs, hiking, playing fetch, agility classes, and so much more. If you're an active person looking for a running or hiking buddy, a German Shepherd is a perfect dog for you! They have the energy and endurance to keep up with you on long walks or runs. German Shepherds also make great agility dogs - they love to jump, run, and play! If you're looking for a fun way to exercise your German Shepherd and yourself! Maybe you have a hard time sitting still or concentrating on a task. You might even feel a little anxious. Whatever it is, the frustration dissipates as soon as you go for a good run. German Shepherds are like that — all the time. However, individual needs vary. These can be based on factors such as age, general health, overall fitness level and habits, and more. They may try to get your attention by barking, whining, or jumping up on you. Perhaps they pace back and forth or otherwise appear anxious. Excessive Chewing or Digging With those feelings of restlessness pushing them, dogs start to look for ways to burn off their excess energy. Unfortunately for us, this usually means they start digging up the yard or chewing on the furniture. Whatever is within a bored German Shepherd's reach has no hope for escape. Excessive Barking Another annoying method they will use to burn off excess energy is to bark at everything that moves. They may be trying to give themselves a job to do, seeking attention out of boredom, or both. Weight Gain Just like people, a lack of exercise puts German Shepherds at risk of gaining weight. This is especially true if they have free access to food. They may eat more out of pure boredom. Unfortunately, these dogs are already susceptible to problems like hip dysplasia, which is greatly exacerbated by being overweight. Thus, they need plenty of exercise too. However, they need it in shorter, more frequent doses. Playful pups get a lot of it themselves as they run around and explore their world. However, you should provide about 5 minutes of formal exercise such as a walk for every month of their age. The best exercises for German Shepherd puppies are short walks or runs, playing fetch games, and swimming. These activities will help them burn off some of their energy while learning commands and socializing with other dogs. Exercise for Senior German Shepherds As dogs age, their muscles get weaker and their joints become more sensitive. Senior German Shepherds should get at least 20 minutes of exercise a day, but no more than 60 minutes. The best type of exercise for senior German Shepherds is walking or slow jogging. Swimming is also a great exercise for a senior German Shepherd as it puts no strain on their joints. Other forms of low-impact exercise for senior German Shepherds include playing fetch and agility training. Just make sure to keep the activity level low and short, and never push them too hard. The Best Type of Exercise for German Shepherds The best type of exercise for German shepherds is a combination of aerobic activity and mental stimulation. Aerobic activity is important for German Shepherds because it helps to keep their heart and lungs healthy. Mental stimulation is also vital for preventing boredom. In addition to daily walks or runs, German shepherds also benefit from other forms of exercise, such as active games like fetch or tug-of-war, swimming, and agility training. If you have the space, it might be helpful to set up an agility course in your yard. Another great option is to enroll your dog in dog sports. If you want to really give your German Shepherd a workout, dog sports such as agility or flyball are excellent. These activities will tire your pup out both physically and mentally. You can also get dog toys that are specifically designed to be mentally stimulating for pups. These are helpful for days when you are short on time, but should not take the place of regular exercise. If you like to be active, include your pup! Take your dog hiking with you and give him a chance to explore different terrain and new areas. The Fi GPS collar is a great tool for tracking how much exercise your dog gets each day. They are equipped with an activity monitor that keeps track of your dog's walks, when they go for walks, how long they exercise, and even when they sleep. You need the best exercise for German Shepherd puppies to keep them healthy, fit, and, more importantly… Out of mischief! Quite the opposite is true for your fast-growing breed! German Shepherd puppies should stick to only five minutes of continuous, on-leash leisurely walking at a time, based on their age in months. So, an 8-week-old puppy can walk for 10 minutes at a time on a leash, while a 6-month-old can walk on a leash for 30 minutes at a time. However, your puppy can enjoy low-impact, gentle exercises for longer periods of time. You can play games that work on sustained growth multiple times per day safely. Instead, exercise on soft surfaces, for example: Grass Sand Dirt paths or trails Stretching of soft ligaments at too early an age, strains on young, growing joints, and carrying too much weight on their overall framework can and will harm your young puppy. This leads to problems in adulthood, which you could avoid! Remember to watch for: Panting heavily with rapid breath Lagging on their walks for longer than usual Stopping on walks and standing Lying down on their belly or side If your dog is hyperactive and displays excessive chewing and destructive behavior, they may need engaging brain stimulation to help them use their brains to engage in their environments constructively. Ideally, you also need to teach them basic commands and house manners. Start now with basic obedience training to avoid later behavioral issues. Eventually, your active, adult GSD will need at least 2 walks of 45 minutes each source. Other great ways to exercise your German Shepherd puppy include working on their balance, enjoying mental stimulation, and playing gently with toys they love. Until your vet clears your dog as having their bones fully fused this is around 12 to 18 months of age , activity should be cautious and slow-paced. Up to twelve months of age, natural free running is the best way to exercise German Shepherds. With free running, your dog is off-leash and can stop or slow as they wish. Limit and monitor on-leash walks and activity while your German Shepherd is growing. When walking on a leash, allow them to Walk at their own pace Stop and start as they please Sniff around leisurely to explore the grass, flowers, and trees Lay down, roll around, and dig in approved digging places Use a no-pull harness with a design that allows for natural shoulder movement to avoid unnatural gait development. Try this padded no-pull harness on your German Shepherd to avoid any neck injuries to her while she is young. This design also limits pulling and helps teach nice leash walking manners. The handle on the back of the no-pull harness makes it easy to grab your pup to stop them from running into a hazard or just to catch them! Read more helpful information on the benefits and disadvantages of using a harness or a collar to help you choose the right equipment for walking your new puppy. Exercising puppies heavily too early in life may lead to joint damage. This is especially likely in large breeds with rapidly growing and heavily loaded joints, such as your GSD. High-Impact Activity to Avoid Jumping, especially from couches, furniture, or cars Twisting such as chasing a toy that wildly moves in many directions Exercising over hard or uneven ground especially sidewalks and asphalt Keep exercise short and frequent, as this is more beneficial than long, infrequent periods of activity. Sep 06, Puppies need exercise to develop healthy bones, muscles and hearts. Exercise goes a long way to help curb anxiety and behavior issues related to boredom. But you may have heard that too much exercise can be harmful. How much exercise is necessary, how much is too much, and what kinds of exercise should you be doing? As a general rule, your puppy knows best. Normal puppy play is okay, and you should never feel as though you should stop your puppy from playing on its own accord. Short walks are also okay, as long as your idea of a short walk isn't 3 miles every morning! Short games of fetch and tug are also okay. Fetch is especially hard on the body because most dogs rapidly accelerate to go after the ball and rapidly decelerate once they get to it, so good throws is plenty in conjunction with other acceptable exercises. Tug is also hard on the body, so minutes is plenty in conjunction with other acceptable exercises as well. Swimming is a great, low-impact exercise. Just make sure your puppy doesn't ingest too much water while swimming. It's also recommended that you not play fetch in the water because dogs can accidentally ingest a lot of water when retrieving toys thrown into bodies of water. Examples of exercises that are too rigorous for puppies are long hikes, running steps, long games of fetch, long walks, running, jogging, weight pull and pulling carts of any kind, wearing vests with anything over a few ounces in it for anything other than a short stroll, flyball, and inappropriate amounts of agility training. All of these things are stressful on soft, growing bones and joints and can result in hip and elbow dysplasia and musculoskeletal deformities, diseases and injuries. As a rule of thumb, don't exceed 5 minutes for each month of the puppy's age of acceptable exercise no more than twice a day. For instance, 15 minutes of exercise twice a day is ideal for a 3-month-old puppy, while 20 minutes twice a day is ideal for a 4-month-old puppy. As a general rule, you can start building up puppies to adult levels of exercise once they turn 9 months of age if they're not expected to grow over 25lbs. By a year they can be exercised as an adult as long as you properly build up their stamina. For medium and large breeds, you can begin to build them up to adult levels of exercise by 15 months and it's safe to exercise them as adults once they turn 18 months old. German Shepherd dogs will naturally travel in a cantering-lope rather than a slow walk. That means that it is imperative that you train your puppy early on how to walk on a leash by your side without pulling. German Shepherds are a powerful breed and are capable of dragging handlers who aren't strong enough to hold them back. Eliminate the possibility of a physical tug of war by relying on solid training instead. Remember, exercise is also great for keeping hip and elbow joints stabilized in German Shepherd Dogs. Many large breeds are known to suffer from hip and elbow problems later in life, but dysplasia seems to unfairly target the German Shepherd. Regular exercise can help to build muscle around joints to protect them. The more muscle, the less stress on the joint. Make sure you keep your puppies lean, well hydrated, and wait an hour or two after your puppy eats before exercise. If you stick by these rules, you lessen the chances of hip and elbow dysplasia, panosteitis, strains, sprains, ligament injuries, bloat, obesity, heart disease and arthritis. Also keep the temperature in mind and watch for signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Stop exercise if your puppy no longer wants to play or stops to rest and everything should be fine. To start running, hiking, or any other intense workout, you should wait until your dog is fully grown. Before reaching adulthood, his bones, joints, and muscles are still in development, so they are fragile. As large dogs, they can take from 24 to 36 months 2 to 3 years to be fully grown and ready for adventures! As your dog ages, his energy will slowly start decreasing. At an elderly stage, your GSD will be more prone to joint issues and injuries. Just as puppies, old dogs are too fragile for high-impact sports. Around 1 hour of low-impact activity with some mental stimulation should be enough to keep them healthy and happy. Even if German Shepherds are generally healthy, they can still be prone to several medical or physical restrictions. At the same time, you can ask him for personalized advice to exercise your dog properly. Talking to an expert is always the best way to have accurate answers to your questions. They are also helpful to determine how much exercise he needs. Weight problems, joint issues, lack of stamina, and many other aspects can influence his requirements. Energy Level. German Shepherds are definitely among the most energetic working breeds, but some are more hyper than others. If you want to prevent your GSD from boredom and keep him healthy, your ultimate goal is to spend all of his pent-up energy at the end of the day. First of all, daily walks are essential for him to stimulate his mind and body at the same time. Now the real question is about how often should you walk with him? For high-energy dog breeds, the longer they walk, the better it generally is. An adult German Shepherd in good shape has enough energy, stamina, and physical conditions to walk all day long. However, the minimum daily requirement for most GSDs is approximately 30 to 45 minutes of walking. For the distance, anywhere between 2 and 5 miles of walking per day should be fine for the average German Shepherd. Learn more about how far you can walk with your German Shepherd! With 5 to 10 minutes of daily moderate exercise requirements per month of age, walking is still important for young dogs. A puppy German Shepherd should walk around 5 minutes per day for every month of age. For instance, 20 minutes of daily walking is perfect for a 4-month-old puppy. If you enjoy endurance sports and your dog is athletic, running can be a great way to exercise together. German Shepherds are strong, tough, fast, and generally have good stamina. With proper training and preparation, they can make awesome running partners! If you want to run with your German Shepherd, I have another article to help you out! To keep him fit, healthy, and happy, you have to find other ways to exercise. Interactive Games. You can tire out your dog quite easily with nothing else than a ball or a tug rope. The German Shepherd is very social, so playing games actively with him is essential. With some energy, time, and creativity, you have everything you need to exercise your dog. Try Some Dog Sports. Another great idea to provide your German Shepherd with proper exercise is to practice sports together. Some of the best sports for German Shepherds are agility training, Schutzhund protection , canicross, bikejoring, and tracking. Smart, courageous, and active, they are generally good candidates for virtually any activity. Thus, you should always try to include your dog in your exercise routine! Quick Tip: To make an obstacle course at your home, check out this agility equipment kit on Amazon! Free Playtime. If you are not a particularly sportive person, there are many other ways to keep your German Shepherd healthy and happy. Chasing bubbles, playing with the hose, and jumping in the snow are simple ideas to exercise your pooch. Hanging out together in your backyard can be as fun and beneficial as any other physical activity. Play With Dog Toys. Keeping your GSD active and busy is probably not an easy task. Fortunately, some dog toys can help you provide him with proper exercise. Let me share with you my recommendations for such an energetic and intelligent companion. My favorite exercise equipment for hyper dogs is the Flirt Pole. If your German Shepherd has a lot of energy to spend and a high prey drive, the flirt pole is the perfect toy for him. This accessory will help you throw the ball farther, pick it up easily, and avoid getting your hands dirty. Made for him to chew and play tug-of-war safely, it might help you to entertain him! Explore The Great Outdoors. My favorite way to exercise alongside my dog is to take him on my outdoor adventures. There is nothing better than working out, getting some fresh air, and spending quality time together. Escaping real life to enjoy nature is an excellent opportunity to have fun and do some physical activity with your four-legged companion. Furthermore, German Shepherds are excellent hiking partners. Thus, you have no reason not to explore the great outdoors with your dog. With the right equipment and proper training, you will be able to head out on trails together and share unforgettable memories! Cognitive work is as important as physical activity, especially for intelligent dogs such as German Shepherds. Providing them with appropriate mental exercise is essential to prevent boredom and care for their well-being. There are certainly better ways than others, so here are some of my suggestions to keep your German Shepherd mentally satisfied. First of all, the most important mind enrichment source for dogs should be training. By learning skills, your GSD will stimulate his brain, improve his manners, and burn off a lot of mental energy. Thus, I highly recommend you to teach him obedience commands or new impressive tricks if he is already obedient. Besides training, challenging dog toys are also great for mental stimulation. You can make him work for his food with the Snuffle Mat , let him play with the Classic Kong Toy , or give him bones to chew on. To keep your German Shepherd active and mentally satisfied, dog agility and scent work are also other ideas you may consider! In this state, your German Shepherd can develop destructive behaviors. Chewing, Digging, or Barking Just put yourself in his place for two seconds; he has to entertain himself if nobody else helps him stay busy. On the other hand, your German Shepherd can also have weight issues or be hyperactive. With personal life, work, other pets, and family, you have many things to manage. Thus, you might have to prioritize his health and well-being over other tasks. If you really have no free time, I highly recommend you consider hiring a dog walker to help you out. Short-Term Signs:. Post header Skip post header How much exercise does a German Shepherd need? Making sure your German Shepherd gets plenty of exercise and mental stimulation is really important for keeping them healthy and happy. Regular exercise can not only keep them in good shape, but it can also help improve their behaviour and well-being. How much exercise does a German Shepherd need? German Shepherds are highly active dogs , originally bred for working and guarding flocks of sheep, and more recently used by military and police forces. All this means that German Shepherds are among the most high-energy dogs out there. Of course, their exercise needs can vary based on a number of factors including age, fitness level, general health, food intake and more. That said, most German Shepherds usually need at least 90 minutes of exercise daily. This can be spread across the day and include all sorts of high-energy activities, like walking, running and playing. To get an exercise goal tailored to your dog, simply download the free PitPat app and enter their details. How much exercise does a German Shepherd puppy need? This is especially true for this breed since they are prone to conditions like hip dysplasia. As a rule of thumb, puppies will need five minutes of formal exercise such as walkies for every month of their age. These walks should be opportunities to explore their environment, work on training and good behaviour outdoors, and socialise with other people and dogs in a controlled manner. How much exercise does a senior German Shepherd need? You can also set your own goals manually in case they have higher or lower exercise needs. What types of exercise are best for German Shepherds? German Shepherds excel at all sorts of exercise and canine sports thanks to their working background. In addition to their daily walks, you could try:. For the most part, you let the puppy decide his own activities at this stage. Your puppy, at this tender age, does not need exercise; he needs activity. Indoor play consists of informal activities in which you educate your German Shepherd to avoid dangerous behavior while satisfying his need to be active. At this stage, it is more about mental activity games and basic training as opposed to physical activity. This nifty little toy is excellent for young pups. Here are some low-impact games that are appropriate for a German Shepherd puppy at 8 weeks of age: Puppy the Explorer Let your GSD explore the indoors while keeping a close eye on him. This also presents an excellent opportunity to teach him to follow you. You must do this organically. Wait for him to get in his explorer mode and start walking beside him. Remember not to exceed a period of 10 minutes of exercise in the second month and stop whenever your pup shows signs of being tired. The minute mark is the maximum duration, not the minimum. Initially, your puppy will get tired after a few minutes of walking around and exploring. In each subsequent week, he will be engaged for a few more minutes. You might need to use jazz hands to get his curiosity. Once your pup starts following your palm with his head, simply tap his nose and hug him. At this point, you might be tempted to start moving your arm out of his reach to prolong the game. Follow the Wiggling Toy This is the ideal transition exercise that I would start around the tenth week of indoor play. For this, I recommend the Pacific Pups Rope Toys Set from Amazon, not just because it is budget-friendly but because you can use toys of different sizes as your German Shepherd puppy continues to grow. Once you have him sitting close to you, introduce the rope toy and place it on the floor with your hand holding onto one end. Your job then is to make sure he takes at least four steps before he catches the rope toy. Again, this is a high-engagement, low-impact exercise that builds up the foundation for medium-impact activities later on. Jaw and Bodyweight Exercises Recommended age: 3 — 4 months Maximum duration: minutes per day, twice a day Risk factor: low Things to avoid: sprints Your German Shepherd puppy is now three months old; he is building on his training according to the standard puppy training methods, and you can start to interact with him more physically. Still, his growth plates remain open, and you still need to avoid exercises that strain the joints, especially ones located around long bones like limbs. At the same time, your German Shepherd has more energy and may want to exercise more than is good for him. As a result, your role has shifted. Here, instead of letting your puppy have the toy once he follows it and grabs hold of it, you play a small tug of war with him. If your GSD is used to getting the toy after following it, he may get too defensive when you tug it. I recommended the toy set for this reason precisely. The final thing worth remembering about this game is that you always lose! You place the rope toy on the ground and let your German Shepherd puppy follow it as you move it around. Once he grabs hold of it, you use your arm strength to keep it in place. Do not try to pull it too hard. It is also essential that you gradually move up the tug of war in time and position. Gradually you can move the tug toy slightly above the ground. Throughout this, make sure your dog is on a leash because you do not want to encourage grabbing and dashing. Ultimately, you have to let your puppy win! As soon as you release the toy, he gets to have it for a while. This is also the best stage to train him to release objects on command. Make sure your GSD is on a long leash before you start this activity. Associating running with playtime is risky. A long loose leash allows you to bring him back to you gently. Be prepared to spend a lot of time negotiating with your GSD. I suggest playing tug before this because it builds trust. When you roll the ball on the floor, your puppy will get it. You cannot expect him to bring the toy to you. You simply tug the leash gently and bring him close to you. Then, you hold the ball in place. You should not pull it away. That will only cause your German Shepherd to bite down on it harder. When you have it firmly in place, your dog will try to wrestle it free but will eventually let the ball go. You can encourage this by just talking to him in a reassuring tone and using training treats. As soon as he lets go of the ball, put it on the ground and roll it. As GSDs take pleasure in high-engagement activities, the activity itself becomes a reward. In my experience, this will always be a mixed bag. Some dogs never stop giving pushback at the retrieval stage, while others let go of the ball the moment you extend your arm toward it. When can I start to walk my puppy? Young puppies are prone to disease if they are walked before they are fully vaccinated. Puppies do pick up some immunity from their mum if the mum was vaccinated which helps to keep them safe when they are very young. It is recommended that you do not look to walk you puppy until they are 16 weeks of age. Puppies are still growing and the more they walk the more pressure they are putting on their bones and joints. Studies have shown that over-exercising a German Shepherd puppy may result in damage to their developing joints and cause early arthritis in your puppy. This does not mean you should be locking your puppy up in a cage for the first year of their life, far from it, exercise and socialization is great for your GDP See what I did there. A slow walk out and about around the neighborhood will do wonders for your puppy in helping them to grow and socialize. This means that for an 8 week old puppy the recommendation is a total of 20 minutes per day. The Take 5 rule has become the go-to suggestion when recommendations are given for how far a puppy should walk. The following section is purely our opinion based on our own puppies. Please ensure you consult your vet for official recommendations. Before 16 weeks we would absolutely recommend sticking to the rule. We interpret the rule to be aimed at making people aware of the potential issues overexertion on their pup may cause in the long run. You know your puppy better than anybody so are in the best position to judge what they can handle and when they are beginning to tire. When can we start the more vigorous stuff? Again, each German Shepherd is different and as their owner you will have to use your judgement on this. Typically, a puppy will be strong enough to go on a faster paced, minute walk when they are 6months or older. Forcing your puppy to continue walking when they are already tired is a sure-fire way to book a ticket to the vets! If you would like to go running with your puppy start easing them in very slowly around 6 months of age and gradually introduce running to your puppy. Over time you will then be able to slowly increase the amount of running you and your puppy can do together. Other signs that you are progressing too quickly can be your puppy refusing to walk further while you are out or a reluctance to go out with you again. Hope this article helps and we would absolutely love to hear your thoughts in the comments. How far do you walk with your German Shepherd and at what age? How do you judge if your puppy has had too much? Have we missed some important information out of the post? Let us know. Related Posts.

american bulldog puppies reno nv - It was said that these cute, fluffy dogs were mostly developed keeping in mind the need of those suffering from allergies. Most Maltipoo litters were a product of breeding the first generation Poodle and Maltese, however, later on one Maltidoodle was crossed with the other also. What is a Tea Cup Maltipoo It is not a category of the Maltipoo but a tactic of breeders to produce tiny variants of the dogs to attract people. However, the AKC and other major kennel clubs are against such practices as such dogs could have a lot of health ailments. Maltipoos who have a weight lesser than 5 lbs once they have grown entirely fall under this group. Temperament and Personality Most Maltipoos would be seen inheriting the intelligence of the Poodle, besides displaying the fun loving, gentle and affectionate nature of both its parents. This trait of theirs could result in separation anxiety especially when left alone for prolonged periods, making them resort to destructive activities like self-harm. They are great alarm dogs like their Poodle parent, with a sense of alertness, barking constantly to warn their owners about all that is happening around them. However, these canines lack the aggression of the Maltese and do not fit the bill of a guard dog. Like the Miniature Poodle and Maltese, the Maltipoo is also not suited for homes with kids below the age of 6 because of their small and delicate nature. Moreover, these dogs might even be snappy like their Maltese parent especially when teased or bothered by the kids. They however, share a comfortable rapport with other canines and pets even if they are not raised with them. Care Exercise Though active and energetic, the Maltese Poodle mix would do well with a moderate amount of exercise, needing a brisk walk twice a day, coupled with sufficient playtime outside or even within the house. If their physical needs are met well, these small-sized dogs would perfectly adjust to apartment living. Grooming They shed less just like their parents, needing a little amount of grooming. Brush two to three times in a week using a pin or slicker brush, apt for their thick coat, helping to keep their hair soft and clean. If your Maltipoo has attained the curly coat of the Poodle, then it should be taken to a professional groomer in every four or six weeks. Their coat needs to be clipped one or two times in a year while the hair located on their head around their eyes and ears need frequent trimming to ensure cleanliness, besides preventing the formation of mats and tangles. Other hygiene needs include brushing their teeth twice or thrice a week, trimming the nails one or two times a month as well as cleaning its eyes to avoid tear stains and ears on a routine basis. Bathe your Maltipoo on a monthly or whenever its coat is soiled and dirty, using warm water and vet-approved dog shampoo. Health Problem Some of the health problems faced by the Maltidoodle include White Shaker Syndrome characterized by body tremors, uncoordinated gait, and rapid movement of the eyes , patellar luxation, epilepsy, progressive retinal atrophy, Legg Calve Perthes disease and portosystemic shunt abnormal blood flow between the body and liver. Training They are intelligent and smart, they could take to the Maltese in terms of stubbornness, hence needing to be handled with firmness. Crate training the Maltipoo puppies are a mandate to lessen their pangs of separation anxiety. Make the crate warm and comfortable by putting their choicest belongings. Do not force them in against their wishes and never use the crate as a mode of punishment. Note: While selecting a crate do not go for spacious and big ones as that could put your dog at a stress. A 19 inch crate size would be aptly suited for your Maltipoo. If you desire to put it in the crate since its puppy days then go for ones with dividers so that you can block a portion of it when it is a puppy and then eventually remove it as it grows up. Socialization training since their puppy days is a must, which should involve exposing the Maltipoo to a variety of situations, the good and the bad. In this way, these dogs would be able to have a control over their barking instincts and not yell at anything and everything they come across. Feeding Give them good quality dry dog food devoid of any artificial colorings or additives. You can also add homemade food but in measured amounts. Morkie vs. The Morkie is high at barking and even yappier than the Maltipoo. Yes, a genuinely black Maltipoo is exceptionally rare. While poodles commonly come in black , white, apricot, grey, red, or brown, the Maltese breed does not. Typically, Maltese are white. But a purebred Maltese is never black. That said, there are a few almost purebred Maltese that have blacks coats. However, most Maltipoo puppies have a black poodle parent and a white Maltese parent, which means they may not stay black. In part, this is because poodles have a progressive greying gene that causes their coats to lighten as they mature. As we mentioned, though, a truly black Maltipoo is exceptionally rare. Maltipoos, by definition, have at least one white-coated parent, which means that even if they appear completely black as a puppy, they may show other coat colors later on. So, if you adopted a black Maltipoo thinking it will stay black forever, you might be disappointed. Temperament And Care When it comes to care and temperament, black Maltipoos are just like any other color or Maltipoo. Coat Care Breeders breed Maltipoos to be hypoallergenic and hope to produce a poodle-like coat, which is closer to human hair than it is to fur. Sometimes, Maltipoo coats still trigger allergies because Maltese dogs do have fur, not hair. That said, Maltese are considered low or non-shedders. Regardless of whether your Maltipoo is furry or hairy, it will have a curly coat that needs brushing several times a week to prevent tangles and matting. Professional grooming every month or so is also a good idea to keep ears clean and nails trimmed too. Weight and Exercise Needs Maltipoos are very lovable and energetic. They tend to be especially happy dogs, and they like to play. A short but brisk walk in the morning and evening is enough to keep them satisfied. This is because Maltese dogs are bred with toy or miniature poodles, not standards, to create Maltipoos. Miniature or toy poodles are similar in size and shape to Maltese dogs. So, Maltipoos are universally between seven and twenty pounds full grown. A truly all black Maltipoo coat is rare Common Health Problems Having a diverse set of parents can be a blessing and a curse. They often have skin or food allergies. Also be sure to work on Maltipoo crate training early to make potty training easier. You may want to consider genetic testing as well, especially if your Maltipoo is truly all-black. How Do Black Maltipoos Play? Thanks to their poodle genes, Maltipoos of all colors tend to be exceptionally smart. They might participate in puzzle games or stack play. They also like a good old game of fetch. That makes Maltipoos ideal for seniors or those who work from home. If you can hang out with your Maltipoo the majority of the time, you can give them a very happy lifestyle. The cost of a black Maltipoo can vary significantly. However, black Maltipoos are strikingly gorgeous, which means some breeders will charge more. Often, the cost has less to do with their color and more to do with other things. Of course, if you adopt a black Maltipoo from a shelter, it can be very affordable. Final Thoughts Finding a black Maltipoo might be difficult, but owning one is a treat. These dogs are loving, happy, and intelligent. They like to play but mostly just want to be your companion. Though they may develop pops of white or grey , their loving personality is never going to change. My wife and I love playing with our active miniature Labradoodle Max. We want all Oodle puppies to be healthy and happy, have lots of fun and be part of the family. Load More. Black Maltipoos Overview Since the Maltipoo is a cross of a toy Poodle which can be found in a wide range of colors with solid or parti-black being part of that and a Maltese which is only found in white or cream white is the preferred standard color , you may wonder how in the world mixing those two could produce black Maltipoos. Many assume that the white would mix with the black to produce a gray. However, genes are at play here both dominant and recessive , so it gets a bit more complicated than just the two colors of the dam and sire mixing. Black Maltipoos are very rare, but they certainly do exist. This section will go into this with more detail to explore one of the most gorgeous and sought-after coats of this amazing hybrid dog. This black Maltipoo's coat texture is influenced by the Maltese; though it holds the Poodle color of black, the texture is soft and silky. Zoey, Photo courtesy of Cathy Zakrzewski True Black Maltipoos To understand a bit more about black Maltipoo puppies and dogs, we must look to the Poodle, since this coat color is not found in the bloodline of the Maltese. And it is in that breed that there are some interesting things happening in regard to black. While it may not be very apparent that a Poodle has two different layers of hair, he certainly does. Since black is such a popular yet rare color for this breed as well, studies have been performed to take a closer look. In some cases, the hairs grew out to be blue or gray and for a smaller number, some white even grew in. Therefore, 'true' black Maltipoos will follow suit; they will have black hairs from root to tip and will not change color as the puppy coat falls out to be replaced by the adult coat. One of the other elements of black Maltipoo dogs is that if the coat is truly black, the eyes will be black as well. You will find a solid black with brown eyes; and if you do, there is a good chance that coat will either turn or fade if we are talking about a puppy or that the coat is blue. Now, if a Maltipoo is predominantly black but has a secondary color, the eyes may be black however they may also be any shade of brown; this means that they will range from a light hazel to a dark almond. What a beautiful sikly black! Genes Responsible for Coloring and Hair Texture Since the Maltese holds no other color than white and some may be cream due to less-than-topknotch breeding practices, the black must be brought down from the Poodle. One may then wonder if having a black coat will mean that the hair texture will mimic that of the Poodle as well. You may be interested to know that two completely different genes are responsible for color and texture. Locus K genes are responsible for the color black. The KRT71 gene if it is there or a lack of it controls whether or not a coat is curly. The FGF5 produces the longer, straighter coat. Therefore, if a black Maltipoo did not receive the KRT71 gene, his coat will be soft and with a slight wave. If he received both the KRT71 and FGF5, he will have a semi-tight coat or what we would refer to as a blend of both parents. If the KRT71 is passed down, the black Maltipoo will lean much more toward resembling a Poodle, with wiry, tightly curled hairs. Parti-Blacks More common with Maltipoos is the parti-colored coat as opposed to the solid. Just about any other color may accompany black. Common are red, tan and brown. The Sunburning Effect Black coats, if exposed to too much sunlight can develop red tinting over a period of time. This is often referred to as sunburning although it does not affect the skin in any way. While the previously black hairs that end up having red highlights may still be in good condition, it is not uncommon for them to be a bit dried out. If you have a black Maltipoo and want him to retain his coloring, you will want to use a quality leave-in spray each day. This will add a thin layer of protection to the hair strands for when you take him out for walks, bathroom trips and whatnot. It is important to remember that one day out in the sun will not affect a black coat.It is day after day. Therefore, getting into a daily routine of using your leave-in product will ensure that you can let your Maltipoo enjoy the outdoors without any concerns that it will end up changing his beautiful black color. This black Maltipoo with brown markings has strong Poodle genes, giving her a very curly coat. A good enhancer will not dye the hair, but rather it will work to bring out the natural shades and deepen the ebony hairs while adding shine. Share Us. Yes, black Malteses do exist. However, they are not purebred Malteses. A black Maltese is only achieved by mixing a Maltese with other small, dark-colored breeds. A purebred Maltese should ideally have only white fur as set by the American Kennel Club standards. Although it is possible for purebred Malteses to have tan or lemon-colored spots on their ears, they can never have dark streaks, let alone a full black coat color. They may also have black markings on the lips, nose, around the eyes, and paw pads, but these are undesirable. Are Black Maltese Purebred? As established, black Maltese pups are not purebreds. They are designer breeds usually produced from combining a Maltese breed with darker-colored breeds like Poodles, Pomeranians, Shih Tzus, and many more. A true purebred Maltese only comes in one color and according to AKC, it is white. There are quite a handful of possible combinations of the black Maltese, each bearing unique qualities and of course, the unusual pure black coat or a blend of black and white fur. As designer breeds, they cannot be registered to join dog shows or events. However, owners can still enlist them in other organizations such as the International Designer Canine Registry and American Canine Hybrid Club even though they are not a purebred Maltese. There is no standard appearance for a black Maltese. Their features will all depend on the genes of the Maltese parent and the other dog who was crossbred with it. You can have a full black Maltese, a black and white Maltese, or even a black teacup Maltese. Their fur will also appear different as well as their size. Nevertheless, you can assume that these dogs will be on a smaller scale of dog sizes. Their coat has a soft, fluffy, wool-like texture that is normally low-shedding and low-dander. Although the most common colors for Maltipoos are cream and white, they can sometimes have an ink-black coat. They can also have a touch of blue, silver, or white guard hairs. The coat of a Malchi may be short or long, depending on the dominant parent gene. Having a black coat is very common and you can expect them to have white or cream markings on the face, undersides, and legs. Aside from their coat color, Malchis have an interesting quirk. In any case, they are true charmers. With regards to grooming, owners need to do regular brushing to prevent tangles and mats. They can also choose to keep their coats short for easier management. Trimming needs to be done every six weeks. This cross is known to change their coat colors as they age so you can expect a black Morkie to have a faded color in adulthood. They are a non-shedding breed that also needs frequent brushing to remove hair knots. Most owners also keep their coats short for easier maintenance. Another notable thing about black Morkies is that they can also produce black teacup Maltese pups. This is because they can weigh only around 4 to 8 pounds and stand at 6 to 8 inches tall when full-grown. Black is a common color for Maltipoms although the appearance of their coats varies depending on their breeding. However, they can also have a variation of curly or wavy hair. Are Black Malteses Rare? Unlike purebreds, there is a lower chance of finding a breeder that sells solely black Maltese dogs. Designer dog breeders need to select a pup that carries a dominant black gene to mate with the purebred white Maltese. However, there are cases when breeding this combination is unsuccessful in producing a full black dog breed. Instead, you can have a litter of puppies with a mix of different colors. In the end, having a black Maltese puppy is still a game of luck and probability. Like humans, the appearance of a certain dog breed has everything to do with genetics. Hopefully, I can do it without having to get too technical. In dogs, the default eumelanin pigment is black. They can either have a solid black coat or a dominantly black coat with tan or red markings. This will be determined by the K locus which is responsible for black and red pigment switching in the gene pool. When a white Maltese is crossed with a black toy Poodle, for instance, the puppy can have one of the following genotypes in its K locus: dominant black gene Kb , brindle Kbr , or recessive non-black Ky. A puppy can have a full black coat even if it just inherits one dominant black gene. This is also possible in these possible breeding scenarios: having a dominant and recessive gene KbKy or inheriting two dominant genes KbKb. If the pooch has two recessive genes KyKy , it will only have some black color in its coat. There are many cases where owners observe that their puppies change their coat color as they grow older. Is this the same for black Maltese puppies? As mixed breeds, there can be no generalized answer for this question. If you own a black Maltipoo puppy, there is a high probability that their coat will lighten as they reach maturity or undergo discoloration. The same can be said for black Morkie, Malshi, and Maltipom puppies. For black Malchis, the discoloration can be very subtle and not noticeable at all. Having your dog registered is one of the most important steps in dog ownership. If they have registration papers, your pup has valid identification and proof that they are from a particular breed. You can easily enroll your black Maltese through online registration. A similar process is done if you choose to register your pooch at ACHClub. By registering them to these organizations, your black Maltese will be able to join dog sports and other dog competitions. However, they cannot participate in any dog show meant for purebreds. For a black Maltese mix, the biggest factor in determining their temperament is in fact their parents. Malteses are known to be extremely trusting and affectionate dogs with a gentle disposition. As a family pet, they are quite vigorous, playful, and smart. They enjoy learning new tricks but can sometimes show independence and indifference. When they feel endangered, especially by small kids, they can resort to barking, growling, and biting. Early socialization is also advised. Oftentimes, it can even be a mix of both. For example, a Maltipoo can grow very attached to its owners, making them prone to suffer separation anxiety. They are at their best when a family member is available at home all the time. This makes them ideal pets for seniors and those who work from home. The same behavior can be displayed by Malshis and Maltipoms. Malchis, on the other hand, are known to be more feisty and protective. However, they generally lack tolerance for children and usually stand up for themselves when threatened. The life expectancy of black Maltese dogs is around 10 to 15 years. This is quite a long time but unfortunately, certain illnesses and conditions can shorten their lifespan just like other Maltese colors. Being crossbreeds, black Maltese mixes are susceptible to health conditions common to their parents. Here are some of the health issues owners should watch out for: Patellar Luxation: For small designer breeds, patellar luxation or dislocation of the kneecap is very common. Owners should watch out for occasional limping or any signs of difficulty in carrying weight on one leg. Shaker Syndrome: Dogs affected with this condition experience repetitive and involuntary tremors in one area or even the entire body. Glaucoma: This is an eye disease marked by increased pressure within the eye due to the inadequate drainage of aqueous fluid. Some typical signs of glaucoma include localized pain, watery discharge, bulging of the eyeball, and blindness. It is commonly observed in small dogs marked by pain in the affected leg and limping. Are Black Malteses More Expensive? This makes the breeding process more tedious. Of course, this is excluding initial expenses like food, crate, carrier, leash, and microchipping. Medical expenses such as checkups, vaccine shots, deworming, and blood tests should also be considered. Places to Find Black Maltese Puppies for Sale and Adoption Finding a black Maltese puppy can be challenging, especially since there are many people after them. Whether you adopt or buy a dog, make sure always to check if the breeder or rescue can provide health certificates and a guarantee. Here are some reputable breeders that can offer black Maltese dogs: Princess Puppies — This family-owned kennel in Louisiana focuses on producing toy breeds and Maltese mixes such as Maltipoos and Malshis. They provide a year health guarantee for each puppy. They offer shipping or drop-off by a personal puppy nanny. Florida Poodles, Maltipoos and Shihpoos — Being in the breeding business for 13 years, the owner takes pride in raising purebred Poodles and mixes like Maltipoos. They provide genetic testing on all of their available puppies. All of their puppies are checked by a vet and free from any genetic defects. Five Star Kennels — This is another breeder from Missouri that strictly produces first-generation Maltipoo pups. They provide buyers with a one-year guarantee against genetic defects. To find a black Maltese breed available for adoption and avoid puppy mills, you can look into this list of rescue organizations: Southern Comfort Maltese Rescue — To adopt a dog from this rescue, applicants need to accomplish an online form on their website. Volunteers will then perform a reference check, home visit, and collect the necessary adoption fee. All of their rescued dogs are treated for any illnesses and given updated vaccinations. Metropolitan Maltese Rescue — Founded in , this Maltese rescue located in New York is dedicated to rehoming stray and surrendered Maltese and Maltese mixes. Their adoption fees are fixed and non-negotiable. They may have light tan colorations on their ears but other solid colors are not acceptable. They can also only have black markings on their paws, eye rims, nose, and lips. Aside from having a pure white coat, their hair should hang straight and long without any hint of curls or waviness. Are Black Malteses High Maintenance? Black Malteses are considered high-maintenance dogs due to their coats. If your puppy inherits the long, silky hair of its Maltese parent, then you will need a regular maintenance routine. Their hair should be brushed every other day and a trip to the grooming salon once a month. Baths should also be given once a month and teeth should be brushed daily. If your pup has more wavy or curly hair, you may need to do daily brushing to avoid tangles and knots. Final Thoughts Black Malteses are designer dog breeds that make great family companions. If you are looking for a highly energetic and people-oriented pet, a black Maltese might just be the right canine friend for you. When buying a puppy online, make sure that you are dealing with a registered breeder that only produces healthy and high-quality mixed breeds. They should also be honest that they are not selling a purebred Maltese. If they do tell you that they have a purebred Maltese, they are probably one of those unethical puppy mills. Their unique color is just a beautiful manifestation of how genetics work. My passion for animals started at a very young age as I grow up on a farm with several horses, cows, cats, chickens, and dogs on our property. Leave a Comment. Yes, Red Maltipoos are rare. A Maltipoo may have a red coat when born but it may fade to Apricot as an adult. Are Black Maltipoos Rare? Yes, Black Maltipoos are extremely rare. Black can be said to be the rarest Maltipoo coat color, especially pure black coats. Additionally, Maltipoo puppies born with a black coat are unlikely to stay that color as an adult. Often their coats fade to a grey or silver shade. Are Chocolate Maltipoos Rare? Yes, Chocolate Maltipoos are extremely rare. Chocolate coloring is only seen in parti-colored Maltipoo hence, you will never find a solid brown coated Maltipoo. These respective coat colors of the parent dogs are rare to start with. Maltipoos have hair as they are single coated. Both the Poodle and the Maltese breeds are also single coated with hair instead of fur, so it is understandable that the cross breed also has hair. The general rule is that a double coated dog has fur while a single coated dog has hair. Are Maltipoos Soft? Yes, Maltipoos are very soft. Their coat has a soft, wool-like texture and is medium to long in length. The softness of the coat of a Maltipoo is one of the reasons they are such a popular dog breed. No, not all Maltipoos have curly hair. It is possible to have straight hair Maltipoos as the Maltese has straight hair. Nevertheless, this is an uncommon trait as Poodles have curly hair. The hair curl gene is dominant so a Maltipoo only needs to have a single copy of the curl variant to express the phenotype. If a Maltipoo has straight hair is is very likely to be slightly wavy. Yes, Maltipoos are born with straight hair that will become slightly wavy as they grow up. Their hair is straight with a slight wave due to their Maltese parentage as purebred Malteses have long, straight hair. They get the slight wavy from the Poodle parent that has curly hair. Single or Double Coat? Are Maltipoos Single Coated? Yes, Maltipoos are single coated. Both the Maltese and the Poodle have single coats so it is understandable that the Maltipoo inherits this trait. A single coat means that the hair all over the Maltipoo is basically the same length and that they shed small amounts all year long. They do not have an undercoat. Are Maltipoos Double Coated? No, Maltipoos are not double coated. Their coat does not have a high density and does not consist of many layers. Being double coated is a common misconception as Maltipoos have such a fluffy coat. Do Maltipoos Have An Undercoat? No, Maltipoos do not have an undercoat as they are single coated. This means that all of their hairs are roughly the same length rather than having short undercoat hairs with longer guard hairs.
