Genetic and Structural Health Testing Proper Labradoodle Breeding Practices All breeding programs should be working towards producing genetically superior puppies. Proper breeding practices ensure that only parents with proper health clearances are bred as the breeder is always striving to better the breed. Labradoodles and other hybrid breeders must take this even a step further as there are generations to properly identify as well as testing for the furnishings gene to ensure puppies are not produced with improper furnishings. Breeding dogs is a great responsibilty and this ventured should only be done after proper research and preparation. Testing For the Furnishings Gene Labradoodles come in many different sizes, colors and coat types. But they are generally recognized by their characteristic canine moustache, beard, eyebrows and longer hair on their legs. These breed traits result from the furnishings gene. There are times, however, when Labradoodle puppies are produced without these appearances. Although the lack of furnishings does not affect the health of dogs, it causes problems with their breeding, showing or potential sale of offspring as these individuals do not meet the breed standards. Through simple genetic testing breeders can easily eliminate the production of improperly furnished puppies. It is essential that Labradoodle breeders are educated on how the furnishings gene is inherited and the role that it plays in the breed. Breeders also need to understand how backcrossing works and what it is trying to accomplish. It is important to recognize why crossing an F1 Labradoodle to a Labrador or an F1 Labradoodle to an F1 Labradoodle should never be done in regards to the furnishings gene. Further, breeders who are producing F2 generations or beyond, including Australian Labradoodles need to understand the significance of testing their breeding stock for the furnishing gene. As testing for the furnishings gene is straight-forward, inexpensive and offered from many different laboratory companies through a simple cheek swab sample it is the ethical responsibility of Labradoodle breeders to ensure that they are only producing puppies that meet breed standards and have proper furnishings. Detailed information in regards to how the furnishings gene is inherited can be found by following this link to view the Importance of Testing For The Furnishing Gene paper. Testing can be done through several genetic laboratories. We personally use Paw Print Genetics for all of our testing needs as they then provide you with results in their pedigree database that you can share on your website making it easy for your clients to see the results. This is done through structural and genetic health testing. One of the most common ailments in labradoodles is hip and elbow dysplasia. Before breeding, bitches and dogs are sedated and radiographs are taken of the hip sockets and elbow joint and submitted to the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals for evaluation. There, veterinarians specifically trained will grade the hips based on the structure and classify them as excellent, good, fair, borderline, mild, moderate or severe. Those dogs with scores of borderline, mild, moderate or severe should be culled from the breeding program. Elbows are classified as normal or abnormal, obviously breeding only those with normal results. Once a potential breeding dog as successfully passed structural evaluations the next step is to DNA test for the genetically heritable diseases associated with the breed. There are several companies that offer breed-specific panels, including one for labradoodles. The are performed by sending in several cheek swaps collected from the dog. The samples are submitted to the company where their lab performs DNA analysis. The company will provide a report identifying if the dog is clear, carrier or affected. Any dogs that are affected by any genetically heritable diseases should be eliminated from your breeding program. Breeding carrier dogs is perfectly acceptable as long as the breeder is conscience in their mate selection to ensure the mate is ONLY clear for the disease. Labradoodle breeding can become confusing when one is breeding different generations of Labradoodles or backcrossing to a poodle in regards to properly identifying the generation of the resulting puppies. As breeders we are morally obligated to correctly identify the puppies we are producing to our clients so that they are properly informed about the puppy they are receiving. The laws of hybridization in regards to genetics tells us that puppies that are F4 or higher have enough genetic inheritance to be true multigen labradoodles. Crosses of lower generations do not meet these criteria and therefore cannot be labeled as mutligen labradoodles. Multigen labradoodles typically are more expensive as breeders either invest more into their breeding stock if they are starting with multigen labradoodles or they have invested more money AND time if they have started with breeding F1s and worked for several years at least 6 to produce their own line of multigens. Describing generations to clients should be straight forward to avoid confusion. If you are breeding an F3 to an F1 your resulting puppies are then F2, and you advertise them as such. Labeling such a cross as a mutligen is unethical to your clients and unfair to your fellow breeders. The chart below will help you to easily identify the generation of puppies you are producing based on the generation of parents you are breeding. If you need assistance in identifying the generation of your dog or dogs please contact us. Please feel free to refer your clients to our Labradoodle page for a more detailed explanation of the different labradoodle generations. All Rights Reserved Privacy Policy. Labradoodle generations can seem like a complicated topic. If you are hoping to add a puppy to your family you have probably already wondered what size dog you would like, what breed, whether you should get a male or female. And, if you have decided on a Labradoodle, now you have to wrap your mind around generations? So, knowing the most about your potential puppy will help you determine if it is a good match. This article will help clear up the mystery and give you a better understanding of your furry best friend! Why Do Labradoodle Generations Matter? It is all about the DNA! Generation refers to the ancestry of a dog, which influences both physical characteristics and temperament. Genetics also play a role in potential health issues your Labradoodle may be at risk for. Although responsible breeding can reduce the risk of some health issues, there is never a guarantee. This simple step can protect you from sudden and often expensive heath issues that require veterinary care. Labeling Labradoodle Generations Understanding the terminology used when labeling generations is key. Every Labradoodle generation begins with the letter F. What does the number mean? The number is the generation of the dog. So, 1 is first generation, 2 is 2nd generation, 3 is 3rd generation, etc. Sometimes you will see a B at the end of the generation. This indicates a backcross. Typically this means that the Labradoodle was bred back to a purebred Poodle. There may be times when they are backcrossed to a Labrador Retriever, but as this is very uncommon, this article will only use B to refer to a breeding back to a Poodle. Labradoodle Generations Chart This table provides another helpful reference as you learn even more about Labradoodle generations. Do remember that the DNA percentages here are theoretical estimates. What is an F1 Labradoodle? It is a first generation cross of a purebred Labrador Retriever and a purebred Poodle. This first generation has a large, diverse DNA pool. They can have the shorter, coarser coat of the Labrador Retriever, the curly coat of the Poodle, or something in between! While an F1 Labradoodle will likely shed less than the average Labrador Retriever, there is a high likelihood that they will shed at least a little. Keep in mind that even this moderate shedding can trigger some allergies. If you need an allergy-friendly dog, the F1 Labradoodle is usually not the best generation to choose. The upside to genetic diversity is that it lowers the risk of genetic health issues common in purebreds. Mixed breeds in general are at a lower risk of genetic diseases. F1 Labradoodle Price This generation is usually the least expensive. Prices will vary widely depending on breeder reputation, location, size and color. You should expect to pay more if you want a Toy or Mini Labradoodle. F1 Labradoodles are the most frequent generation found in rescues and shelters across the country , so you may be able to save a bit of money by adopting. Photo courtesy of rosie. What is an F1B Labradoodle? Well, we know that F1 means a first generation Labrador Retriever and Poodle cross. So, an F1B would be a first generation Labradoodle crossed back with a Poodle. As mentioned earlier it could mean the Labradoodle was bred back to a Labrador Retriever, but this is not common. By backcrossing to the Poodle, the F1B Labradoodle will lose some of its genetic diversity. However, the advantage to backcrossing is a more predictable coat. For allergy sufferers who are seeking a lower-shedding dog that is more likely to be hypoallergenic, the F1B Labradoodle is a safer choice. You should expect to pay more if you want a Mini or Toy Labradoodle rather than a Standard Labradoodle. Photo courtesy of dooditsalbus on Instagram. What is an F1BB Labradoodle? So, this is a litter bred with an F1B Labradoodle parent and a purebred Poodle parent. This generation is a great pick for allergy sufferers. While there is never a guarantee that a Labradoodle will be hypoallergenic or non-shedding, the more Poodle DNA, the higher the chances it will be. Because the F1BB Labradoodle is so close genetically to a Poodle, there will be less genetic diversity. F1BB Labradoodles will likely have more traits typical to Poodles. This includes both appearance and personality. While this more predictable coat is better for allergy sufferers, it also can be higher-maintenance and will need regular brushing to maintain it. Owners of this generation will especially want to invest in a quality brush like the Chris Christensen Big G Slicker Brush. Prices will vary widely depending on location, the reputation of the breeder, color, and size. Photo courtesy of smalltowndoods on Instagram. What is an F2 Labradoodle? The simple answer is a second generation Labradoodle, but it can get a bit more confusing than that! F2 Labradoodles are not super common. One reason for this is when you breed dogs with such a vast DNA pool, it is nearly impossible to predict the traits that will be passed on to the puppies. Often there are puppies in an F2 Labradoodle litter that are closer to a Labrador Retriever in personality and appearance. If allergies are not a concern, the F2 may be a good generation for you, especially if you prefer Labrador Retriever traits. F2 Labradoodle Price This generation is often less expensive in comparison because of the unpredictability of their traits. Prices will vary widely depending on factors like color, size, location, and the reputation of the breeder. Photo courtesy of the. What is an F2B Labradoodle? This is a breeding of a second generation Labradoodle to a purebred Poodle. So, an F2 Labradoodle is backcrossed which adds a B to the generation label to a Poodle. While the traits of an F2 Labradoodle tend to be fairly unpredictable, backcrossing it with the Poodle results in a bit more consistency. This will increase the chance of the puppies having a more allergy-friendly coat with less or no shedding. It also means that this generation is likely to have a curlier coat, which is higher maintenance. Like the F1B generation, this is a good choice for allergy sufferers. Some breeders may refer to this generation as a Multigen Labradoodle. This label may be applied to any Labradoodle beyond an F2. If you are looking for a Toy or Mini Labradoodle, expect a price towards the higher end of that range. What is an F2BB Labradoodle? In other words, this means an F2B Labradoodle is bred to a purebred Poodle. This generation can also be referred to as a Multigen Labradoodle more on that later! This makes the F2BB Labradoodle a great choice for people wanting a low-shedding, allergy-friendly dog, as those traits are highly likely, though not guaranteed. Photo courtesy of toff. What is an F3 Labradoodle? It is a third generation Labradoodle, also referred to as a Multigen Labradoodle. Like the F2 generation, the F3 Labradoodle does not offer consistency or predictable traits. So, if you need a specific type of coat, the F3 Labradoodle would not be a good choice. F3 Labradoodle Price F3 Labradoodles are rare, but also not one of the generations with a super high demand. As such, prices can vary widely. What is a Multigen Labradoodle? Also referred to as a Multigenerational Labradoodle, this refers to any Labradoodle that is greater than an F2 generation. If you find a litter of Multigen Labradoodles, the breeder should be able to tell you the specific generation. Whether your future dog falls on the higher or lower end of that range depends on location, breeder, size, color, and other factors. Which is better, the F1 vs F1B Labradoodle? This is all a matter of perspective! If you have fallen in love with that classic Labradoodle appearance, then an F1 might be your top choice. The genetic diversity of the F1 also offers a lower chance of genetic health issues from popping up down the road. If allergies are a concern, the F1B is by far a safer bet. Since this generation is closer genetically to a Poodle, it will greatly increase the odds that your puppy will inherit the non-shedding and hypoallergenic coat. F1 Labradoodles tend to be easier to breed and offer more predictable puppies than F2 Labradoodles. So, the quick answer to the F1 vs F2 Labradoodle question is that the F1 generation is usually a better choice. They can sometimes be a bit less expensive that F1 Labradoodles. Being backcrosses with purebred Poodles, they both offer fairly predictable traits, making them both good choices for allergy sufferers. More important than the specific generation you choose is the breeder. A responsible breeder will do extensive genetic testing to make sure they are limiting the risk of health concerns. Do your research on the breeder, talk to past puppy owners, and compare prices. These factors should be far more influential in your puppy selection than the slight difference between these two generations. What Generation Labradoodle is Best? After all, they may be a bit biased! To determine what generation Labradoodle is best for your family, you need to factor in allergies, shedding, appearance, cost, health, and personality. This will help you maximize the potential that your dog will be low or non-shedding. It also offers the greatest genetic diversity and a comparatively low price. Overall, finding a responsible breeder is just as important as which Labradoodle generation you choose. A good breeder will match up parents and do genetic testing to maximize the chance for healthy puppies. Pair good breeding practices with great pet insurance and you will be on your way to having a long, happy life with your Labradoodle puppy. If you are not sure which generation your Labradoodle is, in most cases your breeder should be able to let you know. However, if you have lost touch with your breeder or you adopted your Labradoodle through a rescue, how can you find out? Many Doodle owners have had success with this simple to use product. Lambert May 11, F4 Labradoodle is a multigeneration Labradoodle dog breed. They are obtained by breeding two multigeneration Labradoodle dogs i. F3 generation dog with another F3 generation dog. They are bred intentionally to obtain a dog with low or no shedding. They are also allergy-friendly and can be adapted by people who have moderate to severe allergies. F4 Multigeneration Labradoodles are low shedders and require regular grooming. You have to spend your time and money on them. They are of different sizes depending upon the size of their parent breeds. They are friendly and calm like Poodles and their loyalty is trustworthy. They are not aggressive and can be left alone with kids. They have an affectionate and gentle nature. These dogs have a big personality. They are intelligent, clever, and smart. They learn things real quick. You can adapt them as a good family companion. They always enjoy their time with kids. They are highly energetic and spiritual dogs and it is hard to find them sitting at a place for hours. They can be standard-sized, medium-sized, small-sized dogs. If they are standard-sized designer dogs, they may stand from 22 inches to 24 inches in height from the shoulder and their weight is in the range of 50 pounds to 65 pounds. If we talk about medium-sized F4 Labradoodles, they stand 18 inches to 20 inches in height and weigh in the range of 30 pounds to 45 pounds. The size of a female F4 multigeneration Labradoodle is comparatively smaller than the size of a male F4 multigeneration Labradoodle. It is a longer lifespan than other generations of Labradoodle. They are hybrid dogs and can live a longer lifespan than purebred parent breeds. Small-sized dogs usually have a longer life expectancy than large-sized dogs. So, size is another factor that matters. They are bred intentionally to obtain a hypoallergenic and low shedding dog. So, they are also less prone to diseases. They can get genetic diseases from their parent breeds but the chances are rare. They require regular maintenance from a veterinary expert. F4 Labradoodle Adoption F4 multigeneration Labradoodle is recommended for families. These canines can be adopted by those who run a family. They are non-aggressive and friendly dogs that are suitable for kids and strangers. They get friendly real quick with strangers and other pets in the house. As they are low shedders and require regular grooming, you have to spend on their grooming as well. After adoption, expenses are not going to stop. So, these points should be kept in mind before going for adoption. If you are a busy person, these dogs are not for you because you have to spare time for their health and grooming. Your spouse wants a dog that looks like a dog, not a small stuffed toy. Perhaps you want something more like a designer dog. The affable and adorable Australian Labradoodle dog is known not only for its personality and trainability, but especially for its coat, which can be easy to keep clean and sheds far less than other dogs. Most people know that the Australian Labradoodles hardly ever shed. That means your house cleaning routine just got easier, and the likelihood that you or your family will react to dog allergens is significantly reduced. You have two options: First, you can purchase a puppy to raise with your family. Of course, you can rescue a Doodle for less. The only problem is that the rescue may come with a host of issues you are not ready or willing to deal with, including everything from physical challenges to questionable emotional stability. How big were they? How healthy will your dog be? What kind of coats did they have? What kind of coat will your dog have? Will the dog shed? Before you start calling breeders and purchase the first brown-eyed pup you find, you should know that not all Labradoodles are created equal. First, there are two types of Labradoodle — the American Labradoodle, which is considered a hybrid dog, and the Australian Labradoodle, which is considered a purebred. Our focus is on the purebred Doodle, the Australian Labradoodle. The purebred Labradoodle from Australia is a cross between a purebred Labrador Retriever and a purebred Standard Poodle. Do you really need to understand the different generations of Australian Labradoodles? The resulting litter is expected to have the best characteristics of both parents, including better health. This generation of pups, however, could still present with health issues specific to their parents. Like the Standard Poodles and Labrador Retrievers, your puppy could develop hip dysplasia as it grows older. It could also have some of the eye problems Poodles are known for. Conscientious breeders are aware of these possible challenges, and so they health test their dogs to make sure they are not perpetuating physical weaknesses; breeders want to produce the healthiest offspring possible. The characteristic that makes Labradoodles desirable is their coats. Some offspring may look more like the Labrador Retriever, with hairlike coats, and some may be more similar to the Poodle, with tight curls. Pups from the F1 Generation are not recommended for people wanting a dog with fewer allergens and less shedding. The F1 Generation pups are most low maintenance Labradoodles. Other than that, grooming your F1 Labradoodle is simple and easy. That means that an F1 dog has been bred to a purebred dog, either a Labrador Retriever or a Poodle. The purpose behind backcross breeding is to enhance the characteristics of one purebred dog or the other. Breeders aim for the hypoallergenic wool and fleece coats. This is more similar to the coat for which Poodles are known. Theses dogs shed minimally, produce little dander, and make great canine companions. In the F2 Generation, your pup could have any type of coat — fleece, wool or hair, and it could be straight, wavy or curly. Unfortunately, you may experience more shedding than you had hoped for, so the way to correct this deficiency is through crossback breeding once again. The F2B dog that has been mated to a Poodle will have the soft, curly coat so coveted by Australian Labradoodle owners. This coat, which will be fleece or wool, is much softer to the touch, and it feels thicker, too. As you might expect, these dogs share equal parts of Labrador Retriever and Poodle. The offspring of these matings is the famed F3B Generation that saavy breeders and owners look for. These are the nearly hypoallergenic dogs that pet lovers adore. The most common choice for backcrossing is the Poodle, obviously for its coat. The dogs are rarely crossed back to a Labrador Retriever. These multigenerational dogs develop great coats of curly fleece. They shed very little, and they are perfect for those people who have allergies. Breeding beyond the F3B produces multi-generational litters of puppies , and these dogs are highly coveted because of their consistency in health, form and coat. They always look predictably like their parents. Opt for a dog from the F3B Generation, and you have less chance of having a throwback pup, which means a dog that looks more like its original purebred parent from several generations ago than the cute and hypoallergenic Labradoodle you were hoping for. Dogs from the F3B Generation will cost more, but in return, you get a designer dog that will be healthy and as hypoallergenic as a dog can be. The multi-generational Australian Labradoodle will be the smart family companion that will be funny, lovable, easy to train — just the kind of canine companion kids should grow up with. The breed is well proportioned and strong with a sturdy, muscular, slightly elongated body that has a light but solid bone structure. The head should be in proportion to its body and have a little bit of a rounded forehead. The nose is most often black, but blue or liver colors still do sometimes occur. The teeth should meet in a scissors bite. Its eyes are dark and almond-shaped but never protruding. The ears are wide at its base, pointed, upright, and turned forward. However, it is natural for German Shepherd puppies under about six months to have ears that droop slightly. It also has a bushy tail that reaches below the hocks and hangs down when resting. There are three varieties of the German Shepherd: double coat, plush coat, and longhaired coat. It has a double coat made-up of a thick undercoat and dense, slightly wavy or straight outer coat. Most German Shepherd dogs have tan and black or red and black hair, medium in length and tend to shed all year round. There are some other, more rare color variations such as solid black, solid white, liver and blue. The white coat version is recognized as a separate breed by some breed clubs and is called the American White Shepherd. A piebald color has also occurred and is now being called a Panda Shepherd. Discover more about our German Shepherd puppies for sale below! Disposition The German Shepherd is an intelligent and versatile breed. The breed requires an active lifestyle and makes for an ideal companion, protector, and guard dog. Very devoted to its family and home and usually maintains a suspicious demeanor around strangers. German Shepherds can be dominating and assertive towards other dogs, though normally friendly with other pets in the home. Therefore, it is important to begin training your dog beginning as a puppy in order to avoid negative behaviors later. Exercise This breed is very active and athletic. It requires a lot of physical and mental exercise. Without the proper amount of exercise, it can become frustrated and develop negative behaviors. Participating in canine activities such as agility, herding, tracking, and diving is great exercise and fun for the dog. Training Puppy socialization and training are critical, as well as continuing obedience training to ensure the puppy will become a well-mannered adult. The German Shepherd is a highly intelligent companion and extraordinary worker. Use consistent and positive reward-based training for best results. Grooming The German Shepherd sheds regularly and is a heavy seasonal shedder. As a result, it is best to brush them daily. You only need to bathe them when necessary, however, as over bathing can cause skin irritation from removal of oil on their skin. Check their ears and trim their claws regularly. Origin The German Shepherd Dog originated in Karlsruhe, Germany from longhaired, shorthaired, and wire-haired local herding and farm dogs in the mids. Its now famous qualities of intelligence, agility, speed, stealth, and courage were developed not in a police or military academy but in the sheep pastures of s Germany. The breed gained popularity in the United States during the early s due to the canine movie stars Rin-Tin-Tin and Strongheart. Unfortunately, because it is among the German breeds including the Dachshund it suffered a decline in popularity due to anti-German sentiment during and after both world wars. However, due to the rise of modern livestock management and the decline of herding as a dog occupation, von Stephanitz promoted his breed as an ideal K-9 worker and today is therefore the preferred breed for police and military units all over the world. Another way to provide your Boxer with mental stimulation is to make him work for his food. Satisfy His Natural Desires. Chewing, digging, and sniffing can be stimulating for your dog. He explores the world with his nose, puts things in his mouth to relieve stress, and burrows objects for fun. Thus, letting your Boxer analyze scents on walks, chew on bones, and play with digging toys are simple and effective mental exercise ideas. Now you should know what amount and type of workouts your dog needs. But to exercise him the right way, there are some other conditions you must take into account. Short Nose. The Boxer is among the brachycephalic dog breeds. What does it mean? Unfortunately, you have to consider this condition to exercise them properly. With this physical trait, vigorous activity is not always appropriate and safe. Your dog can have breathing problems and difficulty regulating his body temperature because of his compressed skull. Thus, you must be very careful with cardio exercise and let your Boxer take breaks when he needs to. The main external factor to consider is the weather. His short coat makes him relatively sensitive to extreme temperatures. The heat, cold, rain, and snow are things you should keep in mind when working out with your Boxer. You can take your puppy outside to explore the real world after 12 to 15 weeks of age when he has received all of his vaccines. Exercise has many purposes, and burning off excess energy is one of them. For active dog breeds such as the Boxer, it can seem impossible to wear them out. Providing your dog with proper physical activity and mental stimulation is the only way to calm him down. Thus, here are some ideas to tire a Boxer according to his age! They love spending time with their owners and letting their playful and fun characters shine through. They are eager to please and very loyal dogs. Originally Boxers were bred to be working dogs, which is why they have such high exercise needs and energy to spare! Common health problems in Boxers Boxers are intelligent dogs who are very loyal to their families. Sadly, like many other purebred dogs, they are prone to certain conditions. If you are thinking of buying a Boxer puppy , make sure the parents of your puppy have had the relevant health screening to reduce the chances of your puppy being affected by certain conditions. Some of the conditions Boxers may develop include: Brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome BOAS — this can cause severe breathing problems in some Boxers with shorter faces. Epilepsy — a brain disorder causing seizures. Eye problems — such as corneal ulcers due to the shape of their skulls and prominence of the eyes. Heart problems — such as cardiomyopathy or aortic stenosis. Before breeding, parents should be screened. Skin problems - such as warts, skin tags, skin allergies and soreness in skin folds around the face skin fold dermatitis. Certain cancers. If you want to minimise the risk of your dog getting problems, you can read our advice on choosing a pedigree dog. Caring for your boxer Boxers are fun and active dogs who can be high maintenance due to their exercise needs. If you love getting out and about walking, they could be a good breed for you! A large secure garden is a must if you have a Boxer so they have plenty of space to blow off steam. Boxers can be very boisterous so do better with an experienced and patient! Boxers and barking Your Boxer is likely to make noise and how much they do make will be down to their training and personality. Boxers are naturally very good guard dogs and so are more likely to bark to make their owners aware of any comings and goings around the home. Training and socialisation Boxers are clever dogs but can be boisterous, so positive, reward-based training from a young age is really important. Boxers mature a lot slower than other breeds, so having a large amount of puppy energy in such a big dog can be challenging for some owners. You need to handle your Boxer with a firm but fair attitude and make sure you are patient and consistent. They can be boisterous so make sure you train them not to jump up at people from a young age. Boxers love human company so can develop separation anxiety if left alone. If they are alone or bored, they like to chew which means your furniture and belongings will be at risk! Exercise Boxers are very high energy, active dogs who love playing and being involved in everything going on. They keep their puppy attitude longer than most dogs so you might find your Boxer rarely has a calm moment at home! Your Boxer will need a minimum of two hours exercise every day. This should be split into a few walks with plenty of opportunities for sniffing around and exploring. You should also give your Boxer plenty of time to exercise off lead somewhere secure so they can have a good run around. On top of this, your Boxer will also need regular, short training sessions. They will also need lots of playtime and free time in the garden to do what they want. Grooming Boxers are fairly low maintenance when it comes to grooming. They have short fur which only needs a weekly brush to keep it in good condition. As with any dog, you should expect your Boxer to shed throughout the year, more so in spring and autumn. A regular hoover should be enough to keep on top of it. Due to the excess skin around their faces, Boxers are at risk of developing a condition called skin fold dermatitis. Boxers and children Generally speaking, Boxers are good around children of all ages given the right training. An adult only home or one with teenagers is better for a Boxer. Always supervise your dog with children and vulnerable adults. Puppy socialisation classes are a great way to get your pup used to new dogs. Early socialisation will help your dog get along well other dogs as an adult. They may get along OK with a cat they have grown up with, but you should always supervise your Boxer with smaller pets. Your vet will be able to tell you how much your Boxer should be eating. You should feed them a good quality, commercially available, complete dog food. We usually recommend splitting their daily allowance into two meals. If you give your dog the occasional treat or use treats for training, remember to take this into account and reduce their daily allowance. Try to feed your dog at similar times every day as they like routine. Remember to leave a gap between eating and exercising. Beware unusually cheap puppies as they could come from a puppy farm. These breeders must do extra health tests and meet higher standards. Set-up costs Puppy vaccines — if you rescue a dog, reputable centres will often vaccinate them for you. Remember that ongoing booster vaccinations will be needed to continue their immunity. Neutering — you should usually arrange for your dog to be neutered at around months old, though your vet will be able to advise you exactly when is best. Check prices at your local practice as these will depend on your vet and where you live. Some rescue centres will neuter any dogs they rehome, saving you this cost. Equipment — including a collar and tags, lead, harness, dog beds, dog bowls, pet-safe toothpaste and toothbrushes, grooming brushes and toys. Keep in mind that all these will need to be replaced with wear or damage or if your dog outgrows or damages them! Ongoing costs Food. Preventive healthcare — budget for routine vet visits to help stop your dog getting ill and catch any problems early. They need annual check-ups, vaccinations and regular flea and worming treatments. Check if your vet offers a health care plan as this can help spread the cost throughout the year. Accessories — including lots of poo bags, replacing worn toys and grooming accessories, buying doggy toothpaste and any other extras they might need. Other costs Training — basic training is very important and dogs can benefit from formal classes. Some dogs may have, or develop, behavioural problems which might need professional management. Boarding — you may also need to budget for boarding or dog sitting costs if you are planning to go away from home on holiday. If you are having difficulty with veterinary costs, you can check if you are eligible for treatment at PDSA here. Get ready with the ear plugs, because Boxers are known for loud snoring! Boxers originated in Germany in the s so are considered a fairly new breed. Getting a Boxer Do plenty of research before getting a Boxer. These playful and lively dogs keep their puppy ways well into their adult years so need an understanding owner with plenty of time and patience! Boxers can be really loving in the right household and will love spending time with you. Rehoming centres There are plenty of rescue centres across the country where you may find a Boxer. Breed-specific rescues that specialise in Boxers are also out there. Good rescue centres should let you know of any health and behaviour problems. Breeders If you buy from a breeder, make sure your puppy will be well socialised and have all necessary screening tests, health checks and vaccinations. We recommend looking for a Kennel Club Assured breeder as they meet higher standards. Owner Surrender Exercise One thing to know about the Boxer breed is that they have boundless energy! The kind of energy that could power a household if you could devise a way to hook up their energy level to a generator! Left to their own devices, a bored Boxer can become a bad Boxer, not through any fault of his own, but because you, the owner, have not provided structured exercise in the form of walking. Be responsible when exercising your Boxer. Choose your time wisely when you walk, first thing in the morning before the heat and humidity have had a chance to take over the day, and night time when the heat of the sun is diminishing are ideal for your dog. Make sure you carry some water for your companion. Try to aim for a good minutes a day walk with your Boxer - twice a day is even better. This is a great time to bond with your dog. Care must also be taken not to over-exercise young dogs, as this may damage growing bones. Strenuous exercise or activities should not be done right before or after he eats. Boxers are susceptible to bloat, which can kill. As we mention in our Training section, there is a right way and a wrong way to walk your dog. Keep your dog beside you or slightly behind you when walking. This medium breed dog is naturally strong and sturdy; one of the physical qualities that makes this dog so popular. An owner needs to find just the right balance.A Boxer's exercise needs will change from puppy to adulthood. One must offer enough to keep the dog strong and healthy. But also know the Boxer's limits. As too much at a young age can hinder proper growth. And too much at certain times can cause health issues. With this said, a lack of proper exercise over an extended amount of time will lead to muscle loss and weakness in the dog. Boxers under the age of 2 years old have a long way to go in order to mature into muscular, well-built adults. It is not uncommon for Boxer puppies to have loose skin and part of the dog filling out and gaining a tighter coat will be a quality diet and proper physical conditioning. To keep your Boxer healthy, daily exercise must be provided. Owners must be aware that allowing their dog to roam the yard is not considered to be enough physical activity. Each vet has their own particular schedule; however in general the 3rd and final combination shot Called a 5-way vaccine usually includes adenovirus cough and hepatitis, distemper, parainfluenza, and parvovirus. Check with your veterinarian to make sure that "all puppy shots" have been given. After this time, then you may safely begin to bring your puppy outside to explore the world and to allow him to meet his exercise requirements. Until this time, a puppy should only be allowed outside in an enclosed area, in which there are no other dogs and no chance of other dogs getting into the area. Consider the Elements While it is important to exercise your Boxer, keep the weather conditions in mind. The Boxer - along with other Mastiff breeds- have shorter, flatter faces than other dogs. They are a Brachycephalic breed, which means that the skull is compressed. You'll want to follow certain guidelines regarding summer care when you still need to exercise your Boxer, but it's hot and humid outside. The shorter hair on a Boxer dog also makes this breed a bit sensitive to outside elements such as extreme sun or cold and rain. If you will be going for a long hike or walk in bright sunlight, be sure to plan rest stops in shaded areas. For Boxer dogs that have any white markings, sunscreen should be applied to those areas and to the stomach if you will be out for longer than an hour in bright sunlight. All white Boxer dogs should have sunscreen applied all over be careful around the face- but do apply to the nose. What are the Exercise Needs of a Boxer Dog? Exercise with your Boxer dog should begin slow and increase at a steady pace as your dog grows older and becomes accustomed. Puppies should not be taken on a scheduled walk more than 1 time per day. This does not mean that he or she needs to say still aside from walk time! This only means that once you have ventured out, a purposeful, brisk walk for a 2nd time may be too much. Growth plates are not yet fully formed and excessive exercise can impede growth. In addition, muscles are not yet fully formed and cannot handle excessive activity. Over the course of the 1st year, you can increase exercise with your Boxer, until he or she is meeting the requirements of an adult dog. A Boxer should have a brisk 20 minutes for a puppy, 30 minutes to 45 minutes for an adult walk each day, given that the temperatures and weather are not extreme. Do not bring your puppy out for walks until all puppy shots are given. If your Boxer enters an adolescent stage from around the 14 to 22 month mark where the Boxer seems too skinny , keep up with exercise and a super-nutritious packed diet as his weight works to catch up to his height. On very cold days, walks can be kept much shorter. On very hot days, head out in the early morning or later in the evening when it's cooling down. Having 2 walks a day is just fine for adults, especially if you must keep the 1st one of the day shorter than normal. If you keep your Boxer inside and the living quarters are rather small, exercising outside twice per day is best for this breed. The Boxer dog should be given an opportunity to actually run around for exercise times a week. This can be done in a large, fenced yard. If you do not have a yard, finding a large open field is great, as is a controlled environment at a dog park. Naturally athletic, this breed will love to run after a tennis ball and enjoy using all of their muscles. You can be creative in the type of exercise that you provide to your Boxer dog. This dog can be taught to catch a Frisbee, always fun for both owner and dog. You can train him or her to run along side you as you bicycle, jog or inline skate. This breed, in general, loves to hike alongside their owner. So any trails or such that you can handle, he or she can as well. Swimming can also be a great way to exercise muscles for both of you. Best Times for Exercise Care should be taken to not allow extensive exercise right after the Boxer eats. This is a canine health condition that can occur from several causes, one being strenuous exercise right after eating. The symptoms are vomiting usually dry heaving , a very tight abdomen and restlessness in the dog. This condition needs immediate treatment at an animal hospital or veterinarian. In some cases, this can be fatal to a dog. Your Boxer will be ready for a walk 1 hour after a meal and for more intense exercise 2 hours after eating. Most do best with activity spaced part; a session in the morning and a session in the evening. If you will be leaving the home for quite a few hours, your dog will behave better if you offer a good burst of exercise before you leave. Try to limit activity within the last hour before expected night time sleep. Running with a Boxer Dog You may be a runner and wonder if the Boxer is a good breed to run alongside you. Dogs with lots of muscle like the Boxer, and especially those that are brachycephalic breeds like the Boxer, do best with short sprints as opposed to long runs. This said, if an owner wants to run with their Boxer, this is something that can be gradually worked on. We'd suggest starting with 2 miles and, similar to a person training for a marathon, work up to a greater distance. Breaks must be taken for a Boxer to re-hydrate. And of course, if the Boxer starts to appear out of breath, a break must be taken for him to get his breathing under control. While the Boxer is not a severe brachycephalic breed, he is a moderate one. So, those compressed breathing passages can lead to breathing issues if he is over-worked. Contact Ronin Boxers How much exercise does my boxer puppy need? Your boxer puppy's bones and joints are soft and fragile and will not fully develop until 18 months of age. Even slight over-exercise can cause minute fractures. The hip and elbow joints are vulnerable having a risk of irreversible hip dysplasia even if the both parents have excellent hip scores. Always be careful how you lift your puppy so as not to hurt its back. Although your main concern will be to avoid physical damage, bear in mind that overtraining at an early age may sour your puppy for competitive performance during adulthood. So, when it is small, only give your puppy the most gentle exercise on safe surfaces such as smooth grass, rather than concrete. Exercise for boxer puppies under three months old. The best exercise at this age is gnawing on firm, meaty bones which will use all the muscles and joints safely and naturally. Do not walk your puppy on the lead or play fetch. Be careful not to encourage jumping, because jumping at this age may cause permanent joint damage. However with other puppies of the same age group, play fighting is allowable providing they are evenly matched. At this age you must carefully limit exercise, but it is the time to give your puppy plenty of love, attention, good food and rest. Exercise for boxer puppies from three to six months old. At three months, you may give your puppy up to fifteen minutes a day walking on a fixed-length lead, increasing to half an hour at six months. Your puppy may fetch a gently rolled ball over short distances. Introduce short games of tug-o-war but do not tire your puppy. Make sure that you win so it is clear that you are the leader. You may allow your puppy to run freely, but do not force it to keep up with a faster person or dog. You may introduce simple tracking exercises, such as finding a hidden ball over a short distance. Playing with other puppies of the same age is still a safe option. No jumping. Exercise for boxer puppies from six the twelve months old. Walking on the lead may be increased from half an hour a day, at six months, to one hour a day when your puppy is twelve months old. Tug-o-war games may continue. Let your puppy fetch balls as far as you can throw over a safe surface. You may introduce gentle swimming, providing the water is not too deep or cold. Dry your puppy with a towel as soon as it leaves the water. Still be careful not to tire your puppy. Exercise for boxer puppies from twelve to eighteen months old. You may increase walking on the lead from one hour a day, at one year old, to one and a half hours a day at eighteen months old. You may extend the fetching game by throwing a frisbee and gradually introduce fetching while your puppy is swimming. At eighteen months you may finally allow your puppy to run alongside your bicycle and begin serious agility training. However, even when your puppy becomes an adult, bear in mind the risk of joint damage from extreme forms of exercise. Running your boxer next to a bike. All the dogs at Ronin Boxers love to run beside the bike, some like to wear a harness and pull others happily trot alongside. We use a "Walky Dog" to help make this safer for the human and the dog. It attaches to the bike below the centre of gravity and has a shock absorber in it, there are two great advantages to this, firstly your hands remain free and secondly it reduces the feel of any tugging by the dog. It takes only a small amount of training to get most dogs used to it. Nature drives them to want to run as a pack and it can be a wonderful bonding experience between human and dog. Just use common sense about the surfaces you run your dog on, the road and concrete can be tough on their pads and joints. If you can, find somewhere your dog can run beside you on a grass verge, and steer clear of busy roads.
Although they are occasionally characterized as a finicky breed, miniature poodles are actually wonderful family dogs thanks to their smarts, their eager-to-please attitude, and their gentle demeanor with kids and other pets. They're an easy breed to train , low-allergen, and low-odor, so they fit in well with most homes and families. Though their low-shedding curly coats have the benefit of being nearly hypoallergenic , they do require lots of care and grooming. If you have the time and resources to dedicate to these peaceful pups, they make loving and loyal companions. Miniatures fall into the middle of the pack; standard poodles are the largest and toy poodles are the smallest. Some breed enthusiasts argue that there are actually five poodle classes, though the Klein or medium poodle and the teacup poodle have yet to be recognized by the AKC. Like their standard and toy-size cousins, miniature poodles have athletic, muscly bodies thanks to their origins as water retrieval dogs for duck hunters. Like their breed siblings, mini poodles have curly coats, lively faces, and dark eyes. While the elaborate continental hairdo, with its curling pom-poms carefully shaped and clipped around the joints and chest, is popular with show poodles, most miniature poodle owners prefer the low-key sporting clip, a short, one-length cut that looks a bit less like a topiary. No problem. The miniature poodle comes in an array of hues, including black, white, apricot, grey, silver, and brown. The breed tends to shed only minimally, so you won't need to stock up on lint rollers with a mini poodle around. And, while no dog is truly hypoallergenic , poodles of all sizes can be a good fit for people with allergies. Temperament When compared to their breed siblings, miniature poodles fall in the middle of the pack in terms of temperament, too. Tiny toy poodles tend to be a little more hyper, while the standard is the calmest of the three. All poodle types can be anxious and timid at times and do best in a peaceful living arrangement with lots of attention and care. Miniature poodles are smart, active, and playful. They love to romp and play nearly non-stop as puppies and young dogs. Their activity levels do change with maturity, but you can expect your miniature poodle to stay pretty active even as an adult dog. When they meet someone new, their reactions can range from friendly and polite to shy and timid. Their sensitive nature sometimes results in hypersensitivity and anxiety; help your mini out by socializing them early and providing them a stable, conflict-free living arrangement. That can actually be a reflection of a number of things, but the most prominent variable is socialization, either the implementation of it or lack thereof," Silverman says. Living Needs These little athletes love space to run and burn off their extra energy, so a big fenced-in yard or frequent trips to the dog park is a plus. Their small size means they can live well in an apartment as long as they get their exercise needs met, says Chyrle Bonk, DVM at Pet Keen. Miniature poodles are peaceful dogs who know how to play nice with children, Bonk says. And, with proper socialization, poodles can be friendly with other pets. But because they can be anxious, a poodle might not thrive if you have a revolving door of visitors or a noisy, chaotic living situation. Early socialization will keep your miniature poodle from being overly watchful and timid. Spending time with their owners is important to minis—they can become lonely or experience separation anxiety if left alone too often. As Bonk says, poodles "require a lot of attention and mental stimulation to fill their hours. They aren't going to like being left alone without something to do. But lack of shedding doesn't mean it's a no-maintenance coat. Bonk says your mini needs daily brushing to prevent matting. Even when they're given a simple one-length-all-over sporting clip, miniature poodles require regular grooming appointments—or an owner who is seriously skilled with clippers. Miniature poodles are active, athletic dogs who need plenty of daily exercise and long daily strolls. They're up for adventure and love to stay busy, so it won't be hard to keep them moving. Miniature poodles love to swim , and swimming can be an excellent workout for these curly cuties. Minis also love playing fetch and can burn off some of their abundant energy chasing after balls and sticks in the backyard. These tiny athletes also excel in obedience training and agility. Because of this, I would recommend starting by teaching them to jump up on something elevated, like a low chair, couch or bed," Silverman says. Bonk recommends keeping training upbeat, fun, and not repetitive. Encouraging your pup with lots of praise and consistency will get your eager-to-please mini in his zone. Thanks to their people-pleasing nature, miniature poodles are typically easy to potty train. Just make sure they have a healthy diet of high-quality dog food and plenty of fresh, clean water available. Your veterinarian should be able to recommend a food with the right nutrients for your dog's age and nutritional needs. Health Miniature poodles usually live long lives of 10—18 years and are generally healthy dogs. Reputable poodle breeders routinely test their dogs for health conditions miniature poodles are prone to, including hip dysplasia , eye problems , and orthopedic issues such as luxating patella. Miniature poodles are also prone to dental disease. Tartar build up can lead to more serious issues including infection, tooth loss, and organ damage, so regular teeth cleanings —either at home or through your veterinarian —are a must. Keeping regularly scheduled veterinary appointments will help you stay up-to-date on your individual miniature poodle's health and well-being. History Poodles originated in Germany as duck-hunting dogs—the name poodle coming from the word pudelin, a German-language reference to the breed's fondness for water, the AKC says. Their intelligence, swimming abilities, and protective coat made them ideal workers for water retrieval. While standard poodles were historically the dominant breed size used for hunting, many sporting clubs now use their smaller kin to assist with flushing fowl from brush. The intricate continental clip most people associate the poodle with is for more than just a style choice. The distinctive cut was originally designed to keep dogs being used for water retrieval comfortable and buoyant in icy waters. By cutting the hair short on the limbs, they gave the dogs the freedom of movement they needed to swim while protecting their organs and joints by leaving the hair longer in those areas, according to the AKC. The poodle's natural elegance and trainability made poodles of all sizes the stars of many European circus acts. It's believed that the standard poodle was the first of the breed and that miniature and toy varieties were developed later. The French are largely believed to have evolved the original continental cut into the style it is today, making the remaining hair more round and adding the distinctive tail pom. She is now formally our Mascot. Contact Meet the Pugs The new garden at Upton Cressett has been making progress with the final installation this week of the new enclosed Yew Courtyard at the rear of the house. The 3 metre wide borders are inspired by a visit last year to Hampton Court by our garden designer Lindsay Bousfield, who used to run her own nursery for many years. This is because we very sadly lost her first dear pug puppy called Damson, who escaped from the garden during the Lear-like storms, gales and floods that raged at Upton Cressett — we are an ancient hamlet on top of a giant Bronz Age hill — back in February. So much did we love little Damson that I think I need to write a brief obituary to set the record straight as to what happened on that fateful Sunday morning in early February that still haunts me every time I close the back door and leave the dogs on thier own in the kitchen. Until I met my wife, and her family, who live in Norfolk, I had not been aware of the very special magic of the pug breed. My mother in law has two pugs, who rarely leave her side — either in London or the country. If I was going to make Laura happy, pugs were going to feature, so I had better get used to pug life. They are wrong. This behaviour is, in fact, down to an ancient set of rules, passed down from pug generation topug generation. I was beginning to get the message. After we got engaged in early September, I told Laura that I was going to give her a new pug puppy as an engagement present. If I could find one. The only snag is that I had no idea how tricky and exhausting it can be to track down a black girl pug puppies. Not only are they in high demand and rare but they are also expensive. But once you commit to a pug puppy, there is no way out… so we started our pug search. We rang pug breeders; we trawled the local papers and the internet. Finally, after about three months of looking, we got a lead through a fried of Laura who worked in the private aviation business that a former air stewardess had a litter of five week old black pugs with a girl available. They were another family of pug fanatics and were clearly upset to see her go. This was accepted. After being updated with photos of the pug over Christmas, Laura went to collect the pug in the middle of January. We have ancient damson trees here at Upton Cressett as well so we liked the connection. Since the floods, storms and rain in Shropshire were incessant during February, little Damson hardly ever went outside — and certainly had no idea or send of the garden or surrounding fields or woods around the house. Then Laura went away for the weekend for her Hen Night in Essex; and left me in charge of the pug. On the Sunday morning, with a strong gale blowing, I let the two dogs out. They then came back into the kitchen for breakfast. With the kitchen door firmly closed, I then went off to my study to work. What happened next was one of the traumatic experiences of my life. About an hour later, I came back into the kitchen to find the door had blown. We had had problems with the kitchen door as the rain water had made the door warp and expand so it couldnt be closed easily. So I had asked our builder to plane it down to fit the door surround better. Alas, it had just blown open because of the wind. I searched the garden, moat which was dangerously full of water , th woods and local fields. No sign of either dog. Devastating news this morning. The little black pug has a white chest is called Damson. She is so young — around 14 weeks — she cannot survive long on her own. She had become very close to my three year old black labrador called Cressie and normally they are inseparable, cuddling up on their bed together. They escaped from the kitchen this morning. The black lab has run off and taken the little pug — who is tiny — with her. Damson doesnt know the local fields well enough- it must have been her first time ever in a water-logged and muddy Shropshire field. At fourteen weeks she has just worked out how to climb steps and scamper around at great speed. I am greatly distressed and appeal to anybody who may have seen her, or any local farmers — who have shot our pet dogs before — not to harm the little puppy. A generous reward is offered for her safe return. I am now going to resume the hunt in the local fields. After posting this blog, I rang my friend Lucy Birley who lives nearby. Could she come over with her lurchers? They are hunting dogs with a refined sense of smell. Perhaps they could sniff out the little pug, or pick up her scent. With my own labrador having returned, and no sign of the little pug, I was now getting increasingly desperate. Not the least as Laura had rung to say she would be home by around 7pm. Various members of the public had heard my pleas for help on BBC Radio Shropshire — but all search parties had found nothing. Lucy was incredibly supportive and we tramped the fields for an hour or so — the rain sodden clay making our muddy Wellington boots feel like they were weighted with lead. The floods had caused the moat around Upton Cressett to fill with a dangerous level of water — so drowning in the moat was one possibility. Normally just a trickle of stream water, they were flooded and gurgling away like a ferocious gushing weir. By around 3. With my marriage just a few weeks away, the consequences of hr little pug not being at home in her basket when Laura arrived back were just too appalling momentous to contemplate. As I approached her house in a pretty rough housing neighbourhood cul de sac, I saw a large black man standing in front of the gates to her house. But once I saw the sight of a plastic pug in the front room window, I thought it might be for real. Luckily, the potential mugger turned out just to be a neighbour. So the story had a happy ending. The mischievous little Thimble is now her pride and joy. But no expense is being been spared in the Alcatraz style new yew hedge courtyard that is now her private garden prison. The Pug Garden is turning out to be soemting of a tourist attracrion this year due to the new celebrity status of Thimble following her appearing in The Mail on Sunday. Thimble is often the first thing that visitors want to see. Post navigation.

While the name of this breed is the French Bulldog, their origins cannot be credited to only France. One of the facts about French Bulldogs is that the idea and reason for the creation of the breed originated in England. This adorable dog breed, which has always been meant to be a companion, started as a miniature version of the English Bulldog. This mini-version accompanied lace workers across the English Channel and into France during the Industrial Revolution. Once the dog breed became prominent in France, the subsequent successful crossbreeding of the English Bulldog, Pug, and Terrier led to the creation of the modern-day Frenchie. The French Bulldog we know today originally came to the United States with groups of wealthy Americans who came across them and fell in love while touring Europe in the late s. The French Bulldog was recognized by the American Kennel Club in and is a member of the non-sporting group. The French Bulldog is an easygoing, affectionate, and playful dog that loves their family and gets along well with children. They also love to make new friends, which means they get along well with other dogs, animals, and people. Intelligent and affectionate, this small dog breed certainly wins over hearts and earns its status as a popular companion dog. Frenchies are not known to bark much, unless you train them into it, but they are naturally alert and make excellent watchdogs. As long as they are well-socialized and trained, they tend to have an open and friendly nature. The Frenchie is a highly adaptable dog that pretty much adapts to any living situation that includes plenty of love and attention. Being a short-snouted, snub-nosed dog breed, they do not tolerate heat very well and are also sensitive to cold. This tends to make them one of the dog breeds that hate winter and you will want to make sure to bundle them up to stay warm while out on cold winter walks. Because Frenchies bond closely with their families and thrive on attention from them, they do not tolerate long periods of time alone. They can also be prone to developing separation anxiety if they are poorly socialized or you do not work with them on this when they are young. Potential health concerns to be aware of in French Bulldogs can include cataracts, cherry eye, and entropion. Good breeding practices make a big difference in the health of puppies. Reputable breeders will screen their dogs to avoid passing preventable issues to puppies. Make sure you ask about the health and genetic history of both parents. You can also ask about any health tests or clearances. Heart and joint certifications are recommended for this breed. Playful and happy, the French Bulldog is a great fit for a novice dog owner. They are sweet-tempered, eager to please, and eager to train. Occasionally, Frenchies can be stubborn and they do tend to have big personalities. Although this can sometimes be a challenge for first-time dog owners, it can usually be overcome with consistent and patient training. Puppy training classes are always an option and offer plenty of benefits aside from training. Standard coat colors for Frenchies are Brindle, Cream, Fawn, and combinations of these. They have a short coat that will shed a little year-round. Nail trims once or twice a month keep nails from growing too long and causing issues. Weekly ear checks, along with careful cleanings as needed, can help prevent ear infections. As a small dog breed, the Frenchie is more prone to developing gum disease. Daily dental care plus cleanings at the vet as needed can help prevent this and other painful dental diseases later in life. You will also need to take care of the wrinkles. Frenchies have hereditary face wrinkles and it is important to keep them clean and dry to prevent skin irritation or possible infection. The French Bulldog is an easygoing companion breed. They can be one of the laziest dog breeds that are couch potatoes. Frenchies will often be energetic when they play and will try to match their activity to yours. So, if you live a more active lifestyle, you need to be careful that your French Bulldog is not overexerting themselves trying to keep up with you. As a Brachycephalic or snub-nosed dog, they cannot cool themselves as easily and are extra sensitive to heat. They can also get winded easily, so be aware of this when playing with your dog or puppy and watch for signs of overexertion. There are safe ways to exercise flat-faced dogs and you can work with your vet on specifics for your Frenchie if needed. French Bulldogs usually stand inches tall and weigh pounds. Frenchies generally live for years on average. With this dog breed being so popular, there are plenty of celebrities who have chosen the French Bulldog as their companion, which also means there are plenty of famous Frenchies out there. Also, French Bulldogs cannot swim, at least without a life vest. They can be taught to swim while wearing one, but they should never be left unattended around bodies of water or swimming pools and require constant supervision while in the water.
