Predicting average weights in Goldendoodles is challenging. The parent breeds are the strongest predictor of size, but hybrids can be unpredictable. Standard poodles and Golden Retrievers are both large dog breeds. However, a toy poodle or mini poodles can be bred to larger breeds like Golden Retrievers to produce a much smaller dog, like a toy Goldendoodle or even teacup Goldendoodles. They will also be doing normal puppy behaviors such as eating puppy food , walking, running, and wagging their tail. This is also the time that your Goldendoodle puppy will need their first set of vaccines and dewormed. Most breeders will take their puppies to the vet for these vaccines. This way, they know that their puppies have received the vaccines that they need to get started off on the right track. Stage 3: 7 weeks to 12 Weeks After 7 weeks of age, your puppy is old enough to leave their mother and other littermates and go to their new home. During this time, your Goldendoodle puppy may show signs of fear. This is a normal experience for a puppy to go through. They may be afraid of certain people, places, or things that they have never been afraid of. During this time, it is important to continue to socialize your Goldendoodle puppy and show them that these things are not as scary as they first thought they were. There is also - apparently - tales that two females cannot live together due to both wanting to exert dominance and some go so far as to advise that two female Boxers may fight to the death. Some say that there may be problems from the beginning and other sources say that this very violent situation will occur when the younger of the two dogs reaches the 2 year mark. Perhaps these sources were thinking of the Akita? The Akita is a breed well known for having very low tolerance for other dogs and particularly of the same gender. And while we do not know of any specific instances of the dogs battling to the death, we are fairly certain that any Akita enthusiast already knows to not have more than one dog in the house unless it is a male and female of appropriate ages. Once you have a Boxer, that's it. You're in love and he's won your heart over. He makes life so fun, he's so darn amusing and you can't imagine life without him. It makes perfect sense to add another to your family… You are familiar with the breed and you know what to expect. While two may mean a bit more work, it certainly means twice the love. Sure, the Boxer looks all tough and strong, but inside he's a big child. And that child does not want to be home all alone in your home while you're at work. One of the most common reasons for having more than one Boxer dog is to offer a close companion to the established one. This is not uncommon if a Boxer has Separation Anxiety problems. In some cases, a Boxer may have depression after losing a canine companion or if a human family member has left the house, etc. As long as steps are taken to ensure that they get along well more ahead this usually works out quite well. Homes with two Boxers are often happy homes and the dogs are truly best friends. While this page mainly focuses on the fun and hiccups of having two Boxers, a Boxer can get along well other breeds, including those outside of his size classification. There are some that can do great just about any other breed at all. If there will be big difference is size let's say a toy sized breed , the Boxer should be tested to see how he does with little puppies and dogs. Reasons to Delay Adding another Boxer There are a few things to keep in mind before adding another dog to the home and some steps to take to help make the transition a smooth one. Extreme age gaps makes it harder for the dogs to see each other as 'friends' and the older dog may not want to put up with all the extra noise, activity and chaos for lack of a better word when a new pup is suddenly running all over what used to be a quiet home. In a case like this, we would recommend spending some time working with him on socialization skills either in class or simply by introducing him to other dogs in the park. This way, an otherwise isolated dog can have the chance to prove that he does well with other dogs. It is the canine way more ahead on how to help them with this. But in order for this to happen, both dogs and certainly the one that is already established in the house needs to know that the human s are the true leaders. If your Boxer does not seem to grasp the idea that you are in charge, you'll want to work on that first before bringing another dog into the mix. Never push for playful interaction. That can come later. You will only want to look for tolerance. Once they fall in love and are best friends, two Boxers will often sleep right on top of each other. They will rest together as if they are glued and you'll wonder if they became conjoined twins. Until that time, each dog should have his own sleeping area. In addition, even Boxers that are shadows of each other will most often want their own dining space. If your current Boxer already eats in the available corner of the kitchen, you should move things around so that the 2nd puppy or dog will have his own spot too. How to Keep Both Boxers Happy There is typically a transition time in which the dogs will have to get used to having the other permanently there. While they may have gotten along nicely when meeting, now that they are in the same house, they will be feeling each other out and needing to get a few things straight. Who's the Leader - The most important element touched on above is that while the human must be seen as the one true leader, among the two Boxer dogs, there will also be a leader. One Boxer will be more dominate than the other. It may make sense at first to assume that the established one will be in charge. However this is not always the case. Also, some assume that the male - no matter his age - will take dominance over the female; this is also not always true. In most cases, the Boxer that was there first - and especially if he is older - will be the one. Most dogs will figure this out on their own. There may be a transitional time when one tries to take a toy and the Boxer that really wants to be in charge will put the other in his place with nudging or a snap in the air. Only intervene if it appears it will endanger one of them. With most, there will be a bruised ego and nothing more. For example, if you have a 4 year old male Boxer and are bringing in a one year old female or male ,the 4 year old will take leadership. With two dogs of the same age , it can get a bit tricky. You may or may not notice either stepping forward as they may work it out among themselves. Once you know which dog is the leader, make him be first in regard to any food given, treats handed out, greetings when you enter the house, putting on leashes, and all other elements. Separate Spaces for Twins - Once the issue of hierarchy is complete this usually happens within just a week or two , you will now have two dogs that are inseparable. Despite this, there may be times when they do want their own space. It could be when a female is in heat and is feeling a bit moody… or an older dog may do well with a younger Boxer until he reaches a point of just needing a break. For this reason, have two separate dog beds or other comfortable area for either puppy or dog to retreat to if they wish. Elements to Consider - Possible Cons There are just a few things to keep in mind before you head out to bring another Boxer into your home: 1 Two dogs mean twice the food and twice the care costs. The new dog will know another dog lives there just from smelling around. This begins the introduction process. Give the new dog about 45 minutes to an hour to figure things out and calm down some from the drive and coming into a new home. Then let your other dog out of the bedroom. Have him in a training collar and leash. The new dog will begin to figure out the social dynamics of your family and will pick up on a lot just by watching through the crate. The dogs should be able to meet through the crate. If both dogs are relaxed and not exhibiting any dominate behavior, praise both dogs. Leave the new dog in the crate for the rest of that day and the next before introducing them outside the crate. When you do introduce them outside the crate, have them both on chain collars and leashes loose again until you are sure they will be okay. Feeding Always, always feed your new dog separately from your current dog. Many of the dogs in rescue have been on the street and have had to fight for food in the past. Most of them will get past this with time and after they befriend your other dog. The separation of food extends to bones, rawhides, and sometimes even toys. Let the dogs get to know one another before expecting them to be able to share these types of things. Go for a Walk Before rushing to introduce both dogs, even if they have initially met away from home, start by taking both dogs out for a relaxing stroll together. Walking accomplishes a number of positive steps including: stress release for a dog coming into a new home, physical and mental stimulation for everyone dog and human , an opportunity for a potty break to set good habits for the new pooch, and a pack building and trust forming exercise for the dogs. Walking gives the dogs a chance to share space and learn about one another without the stimulation and uncertainty of direct interaction and contact. Begin the walk with the dogs not close enough to touch. They will be able to see and smell each other without actually making contact. Start off on a nice, neutral walk and make sure to go around your neighborhood so the new dog can learn about where it lives and how to find their its way home should he or she ever get out accidentally. They are 6 months apart in age. Rosco is my Guenther very needy, active, stubborn, smart, playful, and is always getting into mischief. Daisy is much more calm, flexible, and go with the flow. Rosco is dominant of the two. What I found was that, Rosco became a bit jealous still is at times. If you show Daisy affection, he will get in the middle. Daisy followed Rosco mostly but it truly was a match meant to happen. Rosco takes care of her too. If I let Daisy outside and walk away from the door, Rosco scratches and follows me around until I let him out so he can be with her. They play boy do they play and entertain each other. A few Boxers have had issues with chicken, beef, fish or eggs. In addition, certain spices can trigger an allergy, as well as soy, wheat, or other grains. Intestinal parasites: Here's something we never want, but it happens. Giardia or Coccidia can cause diarrhea. Giardia is a small parasite; kin to an ameba and this protozoan is not friendly. It's typically transmitted through water, in a puddle or other contaminated water. Even river or lake water on a hiking trip, and on rare occasions tap water can carry this parasite. This parasite causes gas and lots of diarrhea. Because the parasite runs in a cycle; it can seem to go away, and then come back, over and over again with almost IBS Irritable Bowel Syndrome type symptoms. It has a treatment available by the veterinarian if your dog has contracted it. Coccidia, which also causes diarrhea in dogs, is a different parasite and has a different treatment than giardia. Canines can contract this parasite via contact with infected feces, or sometimes from their mother. That doesn't mean the breeder or shelter wasn't clean, just that coccidia is a sneaky and resilient parasite. Coccidia is often carried by birds and passes in their droppings onto lawns, parking lots, and other areas of the flyover. It's highly recommended to watch what your Boxer is doing. Don't let them eat feces, sniff or lick at it. Protect them from puddles and melting ice. A few other parasites that can cause diarrhea in puppies, or in some cases adult canines, are roundworms, whipworms, hookworms, and threadworms. Ingesting something they are sensitive to: A canine's palate isn't the same as ours. Some dogs think that garbage, trash, decaying leaves, dead mice or birds, plants, and grasses are all things meant to be eaten. And, these can all upset the digestive system or be mildly to severely toxic. Infection and diseases: A lot of acute cases of diarrhea with dogs are caused by a minor bacterial infection that runs its course over a couple of days and then resolves. However, there are other more serious issues that can be at play. This includes: Campylobacteria, seen most often with young pups up to 6 months old. About half of all dogs carry this can be carriers that are healthy, but can pass this on. It's most often picked up when a dog eats the feces of another dog. While the top sign is diarrhea, there can also be straining during bowel movements, fever, vomiting, and enlarged lymph nodes. Inflammatory bowel disease which is catch-all term that is given if a dog has ongoing, chronic diarrhea linked to one of several conditions including allergies, parasites, lowered immune system, and some diseases including colitis. Diagnosing this includes blood testing, urinalysis, stool testing, and other tests. Antibiotics, corticosteroids, and medications to protect the lining of the intestines may be given. In many cases, a change to a different food which includes a switch in both protein and carb sources can help. Other less common but possible reasons for diarrhea include kidney disease, liver disease, cancer , lymphangiectasia, pancreatitis, and hemorrhagic gastroenteritis. Elements to Help Decipher Diarrhea Issues Color, smell, and consistency are all clues: Tarry, sticky black stools can point to upper GI bleeding and warrants an immediate vet visit. Red or red spotting in stools often points to bleeding in the lower GI tract. In those cases, the blood can be coming from small tears or rips in the anus. Yellow or green loose stools. With a puppy, yellow can point to coccidia. Otherwise, yellow or green indicates that food is passing through too quickly to digest completely. Gray can point to a liver-related issue. Foam seen in the diarrhea tends to point to a bacterial infection. Greasy diarrhea can mean the pancreas is having a problem. Give the stomach a break. If diarrhea is moderate to severe, you can withhold food for 24 hours. Do give supplements ; see below. Keep your Boxer hydrated. A lot of water is lost even with one episode of diarrhea. When the ability to drink fluids fast enough to compensate for the water loss is insufficient, dehydration can result. This is of particular concern for Boxer puppies and senior Boxer dogs, but is applicable to dogs of all ages. Try some organic chicken broth. After 12 to 24 hours, start your Boxer on a bland diet. This is typically just 1 protein and 1 starch. One of the most tolerated combinations is plain, white, skinless chicken breast diced small and plain white rice or plain oatmeal. However, lean beef and sweet potato are other good options. If you offer chicken, the broth from boiling the chicken is good for your Boxer to drink after it cools to a warm temperature. Do not give this to a Boxer that is pregnant or to any dog that is allergic to silicates. The typical dosing is 1 teaspoon for each 20 pounds. You can use this every 6 hours for up to 48 hours. Your vet may suggest a slightly stronger dose. Altering sleeping or living arrangements. When you have to go, you have to go, and your Boxer can't always get there in time. If that is happening to your Boxer puppy, pee pads placed over the floor of a pen or gated off area are a blessing. During this time avoid additional stress for your Boxer. At this time, Boxers don't need playtime with small children; it burns energy, and their reserves are low when dealing with diarrhea. Sore Rear-ends. Puppies and dogs can have red, irritated behinds from the change in acidity from diarrhea. They may lick their behind due to the irritation which only exacerbates the problem. Bloat is caused by unhealthy eating habits: if a Boxer eats one large meal a day, or eats too quickly, they run the risk of bloat. If you notice your dog likes to scarf its food, you can give it smaller meals throughout the day. Also, make sure your Boxer does not run around or get over-excited within an hour or two of meals. Panting can cause a dog to swallow air, further expanding the stomach and contributing to bloat. Bloat can sometimes result in Gastric Dilatation and Volvulus. In GDV, the over-filled stomach twists around, cinching the ends closed. This is a true emergency, requiring immediate surgery. Nothing can escape from the twisted stomach, and the blood supply to the stomach and spleen is compromised. In a few hours, the dog can die from loss of blood supply to the stomach as well as physiologic shock. Ulcerative Colitis in Boxers Many Boxers also develop ulcerative colitis. In fact, non-Boxer dogs rarely develop the condition, which may have a genetic basis. Ulcerative colitis is another digestive system problem; dogs with the disease develop ulcers in their intestines. Boxers with the disease will have trouble absorbing water and have diarrhea or loose stool , and might lose weight as a result. Puppies one year old or younger most often develop the disease. Your vet will treat your Boxer by prescribing anti-inflammatory drugs and antibiotics. In some cases, your vet may recommend a change in diet. And remember—if your dog has any of these health problems, they should be treated by a veterinarian. The reasons below account for nearly all instances of diarrhea. Boxers can get diarrhea from eating foul or rotten foods, a change of kibble, stress and anxiety, bacterial infections, parasites, heatstroke, medications, or underlying health issues. Digestive upset Digestive upset accounts for most bouts of diarrhea. Anything from eating rotten or foul food, toxic ingredients, or receiving table scraps can cause your Boxer to experience diarrhea. Anything you boxer eats outside of their regular diet can potentially cause diarrhea even regular dog treats. Switch of diet, kibbles, or treats If diarrhea shortly proceeds a change of diet, kibble, or treats, then you likely have your answer already. Any kind of transition must be done very slowly, otherwise, diarrhea is the likely result. By making a slow transition you reduce the chances of diarrhea happening unless it really is going to happen anyway. General stress can be caused by a wide range of things including a lack of exercise, mental stimulation, being left alone too long, or simply not receiving enough of your attention… Ultimately, any level of stress or anxiety can lead to a myriad of health issues, and believe it or not, diarrhea is one of them. This may help you pinpoint a potential cause of new stress 4. Parasites Intestinal parasites are another well-known cause of diarrhea, granted, this is much rarer than the causes given above. Intestinal parasites can happen if your boxer ingests an infected flea, or the eggs in contaminated soil or feces. If your boxer does in fact have parasites, you might notice visible worms or blood in the diarrhea. Additional symptoms include vomiting, a lack of appetite and energy, weight loss, abdominal pain, and discomfort. Bacterial infections Bacterial infections can happen relatively easily but are another less common cause of diarrhea overall. On a day-to-day basis, our boxers interact with many surfaces and items that are covered in bacteria. Everything from their own food bowls to toys, their own bed, and a plethora of unknown items while out on walks. Sometimes bacteria can develop and actually make your boxer sick if he interacts or ingest it. This usually results in obvious symptoms including diarrhea, vomiting, appetite changes, and abdominal pain. Dehydration typically happens way before heatstroke, but both can happen quickly and unexpectedly. The problem with dehydration is that it can be both the cause and the result of diarrhea, which creates a nasty cycle. Because of this, dehydration must be avoided at all costs. If your boxer cannot fast, then the first step will be to follow a bland food diet. The bland food diet consists of plain boiled chicken breast with plain boiled white rice. This kind of diet works well as it continues to provide essential nutrients without stressing the digestive system. The usual plan of action is to provide 3 small meals of this per day. Most vets will recommend continuing with this diet until diarrhea stops. After, slowly reintroduce their old diet. Probiotics can be given alongside bland food diets and will help restore balance and strength in the stomach. As diarrhea is mostly gut-related, probiotics usually help a lot. Always check which kind of probiotics you are buying and if in doubt, ask your veterinarian for a recommended brand. Medication Antidiarrheal medication will likely be prescribed if your boxer is struggling to overcome diarrhea with the methods above. If your pug starts to actively sniff, circle the room, or run around excitedly out of the blue, they may need a bathroom break. Whining, sitting near the door, or giving you anxious, nervous stares are other common signs of a full bladder. To do this, hang a bell by the door at pug level, of course and use treats to get them comfortable with it. Establish a routine Pugs are little dogs, and that means they have little bladders, too. Get in the habit of taking them out as soon as you wake up, shortly after they eat a meal, after playtime, before you go to bed, and every hour or so in between. Each time you take your pug outside, return to the same spot. No luck? Bring them back inside and try again in 20 minutes. Your pug wants to please you, so seeing how proud you are when they do their business outside will encourage them to keep up that behavior. The shame may actually encourage them to find hidden spots around the house to pee and poop. Instead, clean up the accident with a pet cleaner so that there are no lingering smells in the house that would encourage them to keep going to the bathroom inside, and focus on taking them outside regularly to prevent repeat accidents. Luckily, their bladders and bowels are fairly predictable, as they are determined by not only their sleeping pattern, but also what they eat and drink. You should always take your puppy out to the toilet first thing as soon as they wake up — and this goes for whenever they wake up from naps too! As well as taking them out first thing in the morning, you should also take them out last thing at night or before you are going to leave them alone for an extended period of time: this is to prevent any accidents overnight or whilst you are gone! On top of this, you should also aim to take your puppy out to the toilet every thirty minutes to an hour. We actually started up a diary of what our puppy had eaten and and how often and what times he tended to urinate and defecate. Take your Pug outside as soon as you see any signs that they need a pee or poop. All puppies have immature diet systems, which means that each meal tends to stimulate their digestive system faster than it would in adult dogs. Generally, puppies need to urinate within fifteen minutes of eating and then do a poop within half an hour of eating. Once your dog has finished eating, take away the food bowl until the next scheduled mealtime. This will prevent your puppy from overindulging. You should also ensure that the food you give your puppy is of the higher possible quality — this means avoiding dog food with artificial colours and preservatives and ensuring that real meat is the primary ingredient. Confinement and consistency When your Pug puppy is in the early stages of potty training, it is good to confine to a small area such as a room, a crate or via a lead until you are confident that they can roam the house freely without accidents. Furthermore, consistency goes hand-in-hand with confinement, and it involves introducing your dogs to select areas to toilet in so that, over time, they will learn to associate going to the toilet with that area of the house or outside. A good way to ease your dog into this component of toilet training is via puppy pad training or crate training. Handy Hint: Never shout or punish a dog for getting it wrong; there are better ways you can discipline a Pug. Essentially, the purpose of the puppy pad is not only to reduce mess, but also to get your puppy used to the idea of doing their business in an approved, select area indoors an area that is easy to clean up! Overtime, your puppy will learn to associate the pad itself with areas where it is okay to toilet, and at this stage it is good to move the mad outside to help them adapt. And, that when you are not home to take your Pug there, pee pads are used for bathroom needs. While the exact time needed for potty training varies depending on how often you are there to actually teach the lessons, expect for this to take about 3 months for your Pug to be fully trained. Also, plan for there to be little setbacks here and there as your Pug learns these important lessons. Above all else, do not give up. The Pug is a breed that aims to please. With proper prepping and patient guidance, your Pug can be a very well-trained dog. Step 1: Prepping No doubt, you want to get right into housebreaking your Pug; however, prepping is a vitally important step and is needed to ensure your Pug is set up for success. If your Pug is allowed to roam the house or even just an entire room like the living room or family room this will inevitably lead to puddles of pee and piles of poo all over the place. This means when you are busy cooking dinner, taking a nap, etc. The goal should also be that the area is very comfortable, with everything a Pug needs to be content: Quality bed, lots of fun toys, and food and water bowls. One of the best methods to create this sort of contained area is via an indoor canine playpen. These are square or circular heavy-duty plastic open-topped pens. The goal will be to have your Pug close enough that you'll be able to interrupt any attempts to pee or poo in the house. It's important that you don't just assume you'll somehow do this. Puppies dart around quickly and Pugs of any age can move around a corner and leave you a nice little present in the blink of an eye. You'll want to avoid accidents like this since each one is a step in the wrong direction and a missed opportunity to instill house training lessons. Common choices are 'do the deed', 'pitty-potty', 'bathroom', 'potty time', and 'get busy'. Fortunately, as a puppy matures, the bladder and bowel muscles become stronger and there is a gradual ability to hold bathroom needs for a longer duration. Still, an adult Pug will need to be brought out 4 to 6 times per day. The exact steps are as follows: 1. Quickly bring your Pug to the exit door. If you must, carry him or her. It's okay if some urine dribbles; as long as your pup finishes urinating outside, consider it a 'win'. As you are heading out, grab the training treats. Also be saying the cue words out loud. Example: 'Let's go do the deed, do you have to go do the deed? Bring your Pug to the designated area and stand in the center of it. With your Pug on leash and harness, allow them to sniff around and choose the perfect spot. Plan to be patient. Some dogs can take up to 15 minutes, particularly if there's a need for a bowel movement. If your Pug pees, but you think he may need go number two, remain in the area. As the deed is being done, offer praise, 'Good dog, you're doing the deed! The very moment that your Pug is done, offer both praise and reward, 'Good dog, you did the deed, good dog! Both of you need to work as a team. If you find that things are not going as planned, re-read the rules and see how closely you are following them. Going to the bathroom right after coming back in the house: A very common complaint by owners is that their Pug is peeing in the house soon after being brought back into the home. Stay outside for at least 15 minutes while your Pug is learning his or her housebreaking rules. This can seem like a very long time while standing there and waiting for a dog to go to the bathroom. For this reason, it can help to set up an outside chair, bring a book or take the time to check emails and messages. Barking at night - Is it a bathroom need or a call for attention? One of the hardest elements - but one that you will soon conquer - is to learn your Pug's signals that there is a bathroom need. One of the most challenging times to figure this out is at night when you are awakened by barking. If you are unsure, it's always best to bring your dog outside. However, it will be important to make it very clear that this is a serious time. No playing, no talking and right back to bed afterward. If you are quite certain that barking is due to attention seeking behavior and not for housebreaking reasons, as long as you are sure your Pug is safe and comfortable, all yelps and whines should be ignored. Constant bathroom needs: Puppies may need to pee every couple of hours and adult Pugs depending on how much they drink and often often they eat may need to head out 6 or more times per day. If you feel that your Pug needs to urinate much more then normal, this can point to a health issue with bladder infection and UTI being the most common. For housebreaking, that sort of reaction to accidents will not get you anywhere.
