Life Span Did You Know? The German Shepherd is one of the most versatile, well-recognized, and popular dog breeds in the world. The modern German Shepherd is descended from a family of various German herding dogs. Breed standards were not developed until the late 19th century when Captain Max von Stephanitz, a German cavalry officer, worked with Arthur Meyer and other breeders to develop the ideal German herding dog. Stephanitz and Meyer wrote the breed standard in and the American Kennel Club recognized the German Shepherd as a member of the Herding Group in .Although they were originally bred as herding dogs, they were also bred for versatility, which made the German Shepherd an all-around working dog that could excel in a variety of applications. German Shepherds are one of the common dog breeds employed in K-9 units in both police and military applications. They also make great service dogs and, of course, are still awesome herding dogs and farm dogs! The German Shepherd is a strong-willed and highly intelligent dog. They have a playful, energetic spirit and tend to get along with children, other dogs, and other pets, which makes them a great family companion. A born protector, the German Shepherd will provide a great sense of security for their family while their loving and lively personality will make them fit right in as a companion. German Shepherds are naturally protective and can be wary of strangers at first. A well-socialized German Shepherd will bark to alert you and tends to warm up to strangers once introduced. German Shepherds are dogs that were bred to herd and work. This, plus their high energy, makes them a better fit for homes with fenced yards where they can run. They can adapt well to larger apartments as long as plenty of time is dedicated to ensuring they get enough exercise, mental stimulation, and attention every day. A bored, ignored, or under-exercised German Shepherd can often become a destructive one. They also can be sensitive to their surroundings and large gatherings can be off-putting. With a longer coat, they tend to prefer cooler climates and are sensitive to heat. The German Shepherd is a generally healthy breed, but there are some potential health concerns and good breeding practices make a big difference. Potential health concerns to be aware of in a German Shepherd include hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia , and degenerative myelopathy. Reputable breeders will screen their dogs to avoid passing preventable issues to puppies. So, make sure you are asking about the health and genetic history of both parents. You can also ask about any health tests or clearances that have been done. As a barrel-chested breed, the German Shepherd is also at risk for bloat. While the German Shepherd is highly intelligent and highly trainable, they are generally not recommended for novice owners. If you are a novice dog owner, enroll in puppy training classes or enlist the help of a professional dog trainer; not just for your dog, but for yourself as well. Training assistance will help you grow in experience and build a strong bond between you and your German Shepherd puppy, which is essential. Also, the GSD has a thirst for training and fulfillment. They get bored easily and especially with repetition, so continued training with your German Shepherd throughout their life will be necessary. German Shepherds have a medium-to-long double coat. They will shed year-round and heavier as seasons change. Brushing a few times a week is usually sufficient; brushing daily is even better and your GSD will likely love you for it. Bathing is occasional on an as-needed basis. Ear checks weekly with careful cleanings as needed can help prevent ear infections. German Shepherds are high-energy working dogs. Not only do they require a lot of daily activity, but they also are a herding breed that was made to run, guard, and observe, so they need a job to do to be happy and healthy. Daily walks plus playtime, time to run, and other activities are usually enough for a GSD, but they will likely be up for more activity if you are. With their versatility and athleticism, you can try a lot of different activities when puppies finish growing and they are cleared for higher-impact things. A fully-grown German Shepherd usually stands inches tall and weighs pounds. German Shepherds generally live for years on average. Corporal Duncan brought him back to the United States and Rin-Tin-Tin became one of the most famous dog actors in history. Featured German Shepherd Article. Kristi C. Dave and his staff are amazing. They helped find the right dog for me and have worked with us to make sure we are a successful fit. I have a wonderful companion who is better than I could have ever imagined. Dave gave us a program to follow and explained every step. He let me know what to expect and has been available to answer any questions I have along the way. Dave and his staff love the dogs they work with and it shows in the way the dogs respond to them. When I pull in the drive [at CVC], my dog is excited and happy to be there. Tyler B. Cedar Valley Canine is a sure thing if you are wanting to add a German Shepherd to your family and train them to their full potential! We bought both of our German Shepherds from them and do our follow-up training there as well. I would give more stars if it were possible. Tyler N. Dave is by far the best dog trainer in Nashville! My wife and I purchased our first German Shepard pup and training class from him 6 months ago and I couldn't be happier. His drive and knowledge is unmatched. Our puppy has been amazing; her drive, train-ability, and temperament are amazing. We couldn't have asked for a better experience!! Kaye R. In the past 10 years, we have obtained four German Shepherds from Dave Taylor. These dogs have all been perfect companions in our family and expertly trained by Dave in obedience and protection. Dave is extremely knowledgeable about dog behavior and handling, and he will be a phone call away through the dog's life if you have any questions. Our dogs are dark black and tan, sable and naturally occurring solid black. We strive to produce a social, environmentally sound dog with natural protection instincts. Our puppies are active, inquisitive and have strong personalities. They benefit greatly from consistent constructive training. Therefore, we strongly recommend that you put your puppies in a structured training program as they develop. We offer several different options for training and they are designed to fit our type of German Shepherd. How much training and what kind of training do you recommend for a Cedar Valley Canine puppy? We begin training at 7 - 8 weeks of age. The busy puppy translates into a young dog that is suitable for a wide variety of activities and it is important to direct the natural energy and curiosities of the dog into practical training and living scenarios. We also advise crate training for our dogs. Dogs have an inherent desire for a den or shelter and a crate allows them that space and also aids in the housebreaking as they have a natural instinct to keep their living and sleeping area clean. How much is a Cedar Valley Canine dog? Is there a waiting list for puppies currently? When can I expect my puppy? We do have a waiting list for our puppies. The time of the waitlist is hard to predict as it is dependent on many things - preference of sex and color as well as the size of any given litter. What kind of family is the right fit for a Cedar Valley Canine dog? German Shepherds can live almost anywhere - in an apartment in the city or on a farm. The important thing is that they have appropriate outlets for their energy. As mentioned above, they are busy and active puppies, so it is important to be aware of the time and energy needed for proper exercise and socialization in order to keep everyone happy! Do you transport dogs out of state? What is the current fee for transport? We ship dogs all over the United States and the price depends on the mode of transportation, time of year and the destination. We are always happy to help with this in whatever way we can.
Bassugg Puppy Video Temperament and Behavior With both of their originating breeds being very friendly, the bassugs are extremely affectionate, gentle and lovable, and you will witness their affection in their eyes, when they look at you. This dog is always busy pleasing the owner and its family. This is a very social breed and needs time with people for staying happy since they thrive on interaction with humans. They are smart, intelligent, and patient dogs that would spend quality time with children, and be tolerant to strangers and other fellow pets in its family, including other dogs. Many of them have a spirit of mischief, and would display independent behavior and try perusing their own goals, but they are not practically obstinate. But they are highly trainable dogs, and would look forward to getting your attention, thus making them a great companion dog as well. These canids might also show lazy attitude from time to time, if you would allow them to be so. In fact, they hate being left alone for long periods of time, which might eventually bore them and might even provoke them being destructive. The bassuggs prefer a warm climate, and are more active in such weathers. Care Exercise Owing to its size, the bassugg will need only an average amount of exercise daily. But, if you discover your dog is lazy and get bored easily, motivate them in different kinds of activities. Take them out for a short brisk walk session daily, as also indulge them in playing games with you. Your bassugg is fond of you, and hence, this would be the easiest way to keep it engaged in activities. You do not need to keep your dog in the leash, if you have an enclosed yard. You can also take your dog out to the dog park. Socialization too will surely keep them happy and fit. Grooming The bassuggs are average shedders. Groom them regularly, at least three to four times a week, to ensure their coat retain its gloss and good shape. This should also keep your dog clean and keep it free from matting. Health Problems General health issues are their only concern, except for the fact that, if your puppy is basically lazy, and sleep a lot, it might grow up to an oversized adult. Hence, do not ward off chances of obesity. Otherwise, the bassugg, like most other crossbreeds , does not have any breed-specific ailments. Training Being intelligent and ready to please, it is needless to say that, the bassuggs would pick up training effortlessly. However, because some can be lazy, it is your duty as a responsible owner to make sure that you keep your dog motivated and interested while training. Crate training, housebreaking, obedience, and socialization training by helping them mix with other dogs and pets, as also your neighbors or friends, become easy when they are still puppies. Begin your training sessions soon after you bring your puppy home from your breeders, or adopt them from any rescue. Though, this is not really a problem when your dog is a bassugg since this breed of dogs typically do not have any intention at all to dominate their owners. Begin your own reward system by rewarding your little one as and when they succeed in learning something new. Be it praises, be it tapping its back, or giving it a snack, rewarding would work much faster. This cross will do well on a high-quality dry kibble that offers whole protein, healthy grains, fruits, and veggies in the recipe. If you offer wet food, be sure to do so in moderation. Wet food is typically much higher in caloric content, making it easy to pack on pounds. You can also try your hand at making homemade dog food. There are plenty of online recipes you can test out. These dogs are going to love lounging in your lap, taking leisurely strolls, and napping on the porch. They can get frisky and love to romp around in intervals. But overall, their energy is moderate to low. Pugs require a total of 45 minutes to an hour of activity, but it should never be high intensity. Since Pugs suffer from breathing issues, they can overheat very easily. Always limit times of ultra-high energy playing in case they favor a Pug in this sense. Basset Hounds also need about an hour of exercise per day. You have to be careful of high-intensity training with this breed, too—but for a different reason. Bassets have long backs and short legs. Agility activities or hard running can damage the spine over time, leading to more significant issues. Do be careful not to encourage long periods of laziness since both of these breeds are prone to obesity. First things first—they are going to have a mind of their own. So, training these sorts of tasks may work well. Pugs—bless their hearts—are easily distracted, easily bored, and easily persuaded by mischief. These dogs are not a breeze to train. It takes consistency and patience to do so. When you combine the two, you have a dog that will probably be a challenge, and may even be slow to learn. That will vary from puppy to puppy, but ultimately—expect some drawbacks. Since both breeds are food-motivated, you might be able to keep their attention longer if you bribe them with snacks. While this cross can take after one parent or another, they can also have different fur texture and length. Both breeds are high shedding. Fawn Pugs have a double coat, which means they have a shorter, thicker undercoat with a longer overcoat—which sheds all year round. Basset Hounds have short, smooth coats that also shed regularly. So, to avoid hair all over the furniture, brushing your Bassugg daily can help. Using a de-shedding tool once a month can also take care of a stubborn undercoat if your Bassugg got the double-coat trait. Your Bassugg will also need their nails trimmed as needed. Keep in mind, they may be perfectly healthy with no problem. It will vary, but here are the most common health issues you may run into. Minor Conditions. Bassug Description The Bassugg is not a purebred dog. It is a cross between the Basset Hound and the Pug. The best way to determine the temperament of a mixed breed is to look up all breeds in the cross and know you can get any combination of any of the characteristics found in either breed. It is very common for breeders to breed multi-generation crosses. Sadie is very lovable but also very independent. This was the absolute pick of the litter. Look at those ears. His name is Poster and he was 7 and half weeks old when this picture was taken. He has grown into a pound absolute sweetheart. Loves to be with people, is a comedian in his antics, but can be stubborn. Ron Livingston was the actor involved; very nice guy. It was a fun day to watch a commercial being shot. There were two puppies involved, our Bassugg and someone else's Puggle. The Puggle was squirmy and not interested in being good; our Bassugg just lay in the actor's arms the whole time and was right on cue about doing what was needed. Made us feel proud. She thinks she is a much bigger dog than she really is. She loves to bark at the cats and play with my old dog. Every time they play Poopsie sounds like she is mad; she growls and barks and shows her little puppy teeth. She has too much skin for her own good; when she puts her head in the right place all her extra skin falls on to her face and makes her look grumpy. Her droopy eyes and eye liner make her look sad all the time. A mixed-breed can inherit any combination of traits from their parents. Should a Pug Mix take after their Pug parent, they will be an affectionate, social dog that loves their families. A Pug tends to be playful, social, friendly, and gentle. They thrive on attention and affection and tend to get along well with children, other pets, and other dogs. As long as they are well-socialized, they also tend to be open and friendly with strangers. They can be prone to barking and it can become a nuisance behavior if you do not train your dog to stop barking early on. If the other parent breed has a similar temperament, then you can expect the same from a Pug Mix. You still want to ask the breeder about the other parent breed as they will likely introduce their own potential quirks. You can also meet the mother in person to get a sense of her temperament and see the behavior she is modeling for her puppies. Although the breeder should have started socialization and training, it is up to you to continue to train and socialize a puppy once you get them home. Pugs are moderately adaptable dogs. Although they do well in apartments as well as larger homes, they are particularly sensitive to heat and cold as a snub-nosed dog breed. They also do not like to be left alone for long periods of time. If the other parent breed is similar, then you should be able to expect the same from a Pug Mix. The other parent breed could still introduce some traits that affect adaptability, so you do want to ask the breeder about them. Mixed-breed dogs can sometimes be healthier than purebred dogs, but it is not a guarantee. They can inherit none, some, or all of the conditions common to their parent breeds. From the Pug side, potential health conditions to be aware of include eye problems, luxating patella , encephalitis, and hip dysplasia. As a brachycephalic, or snub-nosed, dog, they are prone to allergies and respiratory issues. Reputable breeders will screen their dogs to avoid passing preventable issues on to puppies. So, make sure you ask about the health and genetic history of both of the parents. You can also ask about any health tests or clearances that have been done. A Pug is eager to please and tends to pick up on things quickly. They tend to be a good fit for owners of all experience levels. The other parent breed could make a Pug Mix easy to train or more difficult, so you want to make sure you ask the breeder about them. A Pug Mix can inherit a coat similar to one of their parents or a coat that is truly a mix of both. Should they inherit the Pug coat, it will shed a bit year-round, require weekly brushing, and the occasional bath. Cutting nails once or twice monthly keeps them from growing too long. Ear checks on a weekly basis with careful cleanings as needed can help prevent ear infections. Brushing teeth or using an enzyme toothpaste every day in addition to cleanings at the vet as needed are ideal dental care for dogs. Pugs tend to sit in a low to moderate energy range. Usually, daily walks and some playtime are enough to keep them happy and healthy. They may be up for more activity, but can also get easily overheated. There are safe ways to exercise flat-faced dogs to help make sure they get enough activity. If the other parent breed also has a low to moderate activity level, then you can expect something similar from a Pug Mix. However, if the other parent breed is a higher energy dog, then you will want to make sure you are prepared for the potential of a high-energy dog. Fully-grown Pugs are usually inches tall and weigh pounds. The other parent breed can have a big effect on this, especially if they are the mother. Although it is not a guarantee, you can meet the mother in person to get an idea of what to expect in a fully-grown Pug Mix. A Pug generally lives for years. Although the other parent breed may affect this slightly, but you should be able to expect a similar average life span from a Pug Mix. Featured Pug Mix Article. A pug breed is any dog originating from the country of China. The Pugs are an ancient breed, in fact, they are one of the oldest breeds that we know of today. They have round-shaped eyes, a short nose and a tail that curls down over the back. Pugs have always had a very distinctive look. Dogs of this breed are cute and small but still have the same domineering personality that all pugs do. Pugs come in a few different colors and coat patterns, which is what makes them so unique. If you are looking for a companion that is both cute and cuddly, then look no further as this breed will not fail to bring home the glory. Pugs were made a very long time ago and they have been around ever since because they make good pets. The Pug is an interesting breed of dog. It has the unfortunate reputation of being stubborn, pig-headed and somewhat difficult to train. But with care, love and a willingness to learn, it can become one of the best companions you could have. The Pug is a very affectionate dog, and has a great temperament for children. The Basset Hound Breed Bassets are members of the hound family. Basset hounds are short-legged dogs. Their ears, neck and legs are long compared to their bodies. Basset hounds have drooping noses and short muzzles. Basset hounds typically have heavy undercoats that shed on a regular basis. Some shed more than others, but overall they all have a lot of hair to look after. They were created to run alongside hunters, helping them find their prey. The basset hound breed is a very gentle and funny breed of dog for many reasons. They are usually very friendly towards everyone, including children, and other dogs. The Basset Hound has been known to be a loyal stranger, just as they are loyal to their family, always loving and eager to please. What this mix will look like can vary greatly, depending on the characteristics of each breed. Some of them may be very close to a full-blooded Pug or Basset Hound. Others can end up looking more like hound dogs. We do know the history of both basset hound and pug breeds. Pug dogs are now among the most popular breeds of dogs nowadays. Many years ago in China, people bred dogs for companionship. A long time later, some people brought dogs from Asia to Europe. The dogs were very popular in noble families because they were small. It is said that the Basset Hound is one of the oldest hound breeds. It has been mentioned in written works for over years, with many depicting it working a pack of hounds to drive away prey. The name French basset was given to them because they were rather low and heavy, like little Frenchmen. Basset hounds are a type of dog that was originally bred for the purpose of hunting. This dog is known for its short legs, long ears, and big paws. It resembles an animal referred to as a hound but with features distinct from most dogs that belong to this group. Bassugg Appearance It may vary depending on their parent breeds. The Basset Hound pug mix and all variations have a long, low muzzle. Basset hound pug mix coats come in all colors and combinations; red is the most common of these. Their coat consists of a solid color with white markings on the legs, chest, and face. The basset hound pug mix has a long face with handsome facial wrinkles and folds. The body is of medium length, the chest well-developed, and the legs sturdy. The ears are long and floppy but they will perk up when they hear a sound. The tail is short, straight, thick, and tapered. These short-haired dogs bring lots of love and smiles. They are gentle, loyal, and energetic. They are more on the calm side, but still have high activity levels to match their small size. Bassugg Temperament The personality of a basset hound pug mix can change depending on its parent breeds. The basset hound pug mix is a sweet, loving dog that will do best when given lots of love and attention. This mixed breed dog is loyal and affectionate towards children and makes a great family pet. The basset hound pug mix will do well in an indoor setting but needs to be taken on daily walks to the dog park stretch its hardy legs and get some exercise. A bassugg has a sweet disposition. These dogs are very quiet and patient, making them a great pet for families with children. Sometimes they may be stubborn and not want to perform an action. Take your bassugg to dog obedience school to teach you both how to behave together. With proper socialization and training, these dogs can make great pets for almost anyone. This dog is not prone to any specific health concerns, but it can be prone to obesity like any other dog of this size. To keep your Bassugg healthy and happy, it is important that you feed him the proper food and avoid any foods that are bad for his health. Make sure to feed your pet the same brand of food for a period of two or three months. This will allow you to see how his body reacts to a certain type of diet and get enough protein. It may take some experimentation so that your pet can feel comfortable with a portion of particular dog food. Top-quality dog foods should be at least 80 percent meats and meats derivatives. You should buy grain-free dog food for small dogs to make sure they get what they need in terms of nutrients, minerals and proteins. A premium quality food is healthier for your Bassets hound pug mix than a budget brand cereal dog food. Bassugg Health Problems There are a few potential health problems that could occur in dogs from a Bassugg mix breed. One is a genetic problem called progressive retinal atrophy PRA , which can cause blindness. There are several things that pet owners can do to try to minimize the risk of their dog developing these health problems. That way the owners can help make sure their puppies will also be healthy. PRA is a heritable disorder, meaning that it can run in families and is more likely to be passed on to puppies when both parents have PRA. Much like hip dysplasia and BAOS, gastric torsion is a condition that can be passed down from parent to puppy. This is a health issue in which the stomach twists, cutting off blood flow and leading to the death of stomach tissue. Bassugg Training and Exercise Requirements As you are probably already aware, training and exercise are important for any dog. Bassugg dogs need to exercise daily, however, they do not require as much exercise as some breeds. Exercise will prevent your Bassugg from becoming bored and possibly destructive or even obese. Bassugg requires moderate exercise. They like both indoor and outdoor places, but they should be watched when outside because they may chase small animals. Crate training is recommended for this breed as they can be prone to separation anxiety. Bassugg dogs are fairly intelligent and training should not take too long. Bassugg will enjoy many of the same activities that all dogs do. He will love to go for walks and play fetch in the dog parks. If you have a Bassugg it is important that you make a commitment to his regular exercise. Conclusion Sometimes we find a dog combination that leaves us scratching our heads wondering what the result will be. This is one of those occasions. The Basset Hound Pug mix looks like a combination of small stature dog breeds, with a hint of the toy. This designer hybrid can be a loving family member and entertain you with his antics once he gets used to his surroundings. Ideally, this designer dog should be kept on a leash until it establishes its own territory inside and out of the home. This wonderful dog blend has the temperament of both breeds. It is gentle, lovable, and calm. A Basset Hound Pug Mix is good with children, other dogs, and strangers. This sweet dog loves to be loved by people. Exercises Grooming From ancient Germany precisely around the 19th century had the now extinct mastiff breed Bullenbeisser and bulldogs brought in from England. At the time of their arrival, they served as hunting dogs for bears, deer, and other ferocious beasts, it would capture the prey with the help of its awesome teeth and detain it until the hunter arrives. And in the first boxer standard club was launched with a comprehensive document that is still in use today. Shortly after, the breed made its way into other European countries and got into the U. S in the late 19th century with the American Kennel Club taking registration of its first boxer around .During the first world war, boxers played the role of a military dog as a pack-carrier, a guard dog, and an attack dog, later they were taken home by the soldiers and got introduced into the domestic world as a show dog, best companion, and a reliable guard. One with so much life, energetic, curious, attentive, active, smart, sociable and incredible fun with children is the boxer, they are also known to be very patient and highly protective of their family members making them the love and desire of many homes. As active dogs, they need a lot of exercise to keep them mentally fit, apparently having a mind of its own, you will find your boxer entertain itself by digging the ground often, chewing, and licking the mouth to beat boredom. They are also very stubborn in character which makes them a terrible choice for first-timers with dogs, they are generally a bit difficult with adult dogs including dogs of a similar breed but friendly with puppies. They usually do not bark unless there is a genuine reason behind it but they love to growl. If you have occupied home with people around all the time or you want a canine buddy the whole time, then a boxer is just the perfect breed to get. Being a highly active dog, they dread loneliness and they can cope finely in both a house and an apartment as long as you provide it with enough room and spaces for exercises and activities. What you must have is a large yard if you are living in a house for it to dig the ground and run around as it likes. And more so, if you are given to being away from home most of the time, getting a boxer may not be the best for you and the dog, because they usually get aggressive when left alone. Boxers are known as loud snorers and they drool greatly too. Boxers are playful and very energetic dogs as such regular exercises are part of a good canine relationship, especially a breed of this sort. Your boxer should be allowed to play in a fenced area and on-leashed since it is likely to jump and leap around in excitement. This puts a boxer as a bad choice for a frail owner as they may find it a tad impossible and daunting keeping up with its excessive activity demands. Being a breed with a short and thin coat its grooming demands are quite easy and little, all it needs is a light brushing of the hair twice every week to maintain its good and gleeful looks. Bathing should be a once in a while since boxers are generally clean dogs and its nails, be trimmed once every month or as often as they grow worn on surfaces, its teeth should also be brushed daily to avoid tartar formation and other dental crises. Our Boxer puppies for sale come from either USDA licensed commercial breeders or hobby breeders with no more than 5 breeding mothers. We only purchase puppies from the very best sources, and we stand behind every puppy we sell. Frequently Asked Questions Are Boxers good family pets? What are the specific guidelines for adopting a German Shepherd mix? Good breeders will only sell to a family with a yard and German shepherd experience, as German shepherd mixes need plenty of space for these dogs to run around freely to get exercise. German shepherd mixes as well as purebred German shepherds should also be owner primarily by those who have experience with the breed, as German shepherds are naturally prone to anxiety and need an experienced, confident handler. The breeder should meet our breeder checklist, have been in business for several years, and their puppies should be well socialized. How much does it cost to adopt a German shepherd mix? Are there any health issues associated with German shepherd mixes? If a German shepherd mix is not from a good breeder, then there may be health problems. The most common health concerns include hip, elbow, and joint dysplasia, cancer, epilepsy, hip dysplasia, narcolepsy, and eye problems. Are German shepherd mixes active? While canine crosses can take on any combination of traits from either of their pooch parents, German shepherds require plenty of daily exercise. GSDs have a high activity level and need to be kept busy mentally and physically. Not all German shepherd mixes will need vigorous exercise per day, but you should have the capacity to take on an active furry friend just in case. What is a German Shepherd mix? A German shepherd mix is a breed resulting from the combination of the German shepherd with other popular dog breeds. These dogs are medium to large in size, and can vary in appearance based on what breeds they inherit traits from. German shepherd mixes do not always look entirely like the German shepherd, as they could also take after their other dog breed parents. How should you train a German shepherd mix? The best way to approach training a German shepherd mix is to provide lots of training sessions focused on positive reinforcement. These pups can be fairly sensitive and eager to please. Thankfully, most GSD mixes are super smart and can master just about any trick with a little time and practice. Some of the best German shepherd mixes around. Which one was your favorite? They are highly intelligent and just as easy to train as a purebred German Shepherd. Any puppies that qualify as a German Shepherd Mix are a cross between a German Shepherd and another dog breed. In a mixed breed, you can get any mix of characteristics in the parent breeds. German Shepherds tend to be strong-willed, intelligent, playful, and loyal. To get a full idea of what to expect in your puppy, be sure to ask the breeder about the other dog breed in the cross and check out the mother dog in-person to get a general idea about size and temperament. On the German Shepherd side, you have an independent dog with high intelligence and a playful spirit. German Shepherds make great family pets and are born protectors. Because of their protective instinct, they can be suspicious of strangers. Socialization early and often can help curb this suspicion and make them more open to new people and situations. German Shepherds also tend to be loving and have a lively personality. The German Shepherd Mix can have any or all of these characteristics plus any characteristics from the other parent breed in the mix. Before buying a German Shepherd Mix puppy and bringing them home, be sure to talk to the breeder about the other parent breed. If the puppies are being family-raised around children, you should be able to get an idea of how they will do in a family setting that includes children. The German Shepherd is a moderately adaptable working dog that was bred to guard, work, and herd. They do not tend to do well in apartments and are best-suited for houses with yards. GSDs prefer to be with their families and do not like to be alone. They also tend to prefer cooler climates as they are sensitive to heat. With a German Shepherd Mix, you could get a moderately adaptable dog that is just like a purebred German Shepherd. You could also end up with a dog that is more like the other parent breed. Talking with the breeder about the other parent breed can give you a good idea of what to expect. German Shepherds can be prone to elbow and hip dysplasia. You will need to ask the breeder about the other parent breed in the cross to get an idea of any other health concerns to be aware of in your German Shepherd Mix. Health screenings, clearances, and the genetic history of the parents can help allay concerns about potential health conditions. On the German Shepherd side, training and obedience classes are highly recommended for novice dog owners. Although GSDs are highly intelligent, pick up on things quickly, and train fairly easily, they can be stubborn with an independent streak. Regardless of the other parent breed in the cross, you should be prepared to enroll in obedience and training classes with your German Shepherd Mix. The experience will be beneficial to both you and your puppy and will also offer some opportunities for socialization. You will still want to ask the breeder about the other parent breed in the cross to get an understanding of what to expect during the training process. Professional grooming a few times a year and the occasional bath is also recommended. Regardless of the coat type, your German Shepherd Mix will need to have their nails trimmed monthly and their teeth brushed regularly. Not every dog will allow you to do this, so try to get a tooth brushing session in at least a few times a week to reduce tartar buildup. This will help prevent dental problems like tooth decay and gum disease. Plus, it will help cut down on bad breath! German Shepherds tend to have a high activity level. They were bred to run, herd, guard, and protect, so they are used to working and having a job to do. They are definitely not a lazy dog breed! Be sure to talk to the breeder about the other parent breed in the mix. You will still want to go in prepared for a high energy dog with the understanding that your German Shepherd Mix puppy may have an activity level closer to the other breed in the cross. If both are high energy dogs breeds, expect to end up with a high energy dog. A German Shepherd is a large dog breed that generally weighs between 55 and 90 pounds. The peak of Atlantic hurricane season is here which is why it's important to take some time to reflect on disaster preparedness. As unlikely as it may seem, a disaster can strike at any moment. Whether it's a fire, tornado, hurricane, flood, or blizzard, it's critical to be prepared and have a plan in place. Unfortunately, pets are sometimes unintentionally left out of their owners' disaster preparedness plans which makes it difficult to know what to do with them during an emergency. Luckily, you can plan ahead for your pets using these tips: Listen to your veterinarian Make sure your pet wears a collar with up to date information on it, get them microchipped, and have them vaccinated. These recommendations will come in handy during a disaster and help you avoid any potential pitfalls, such as being unable to get into a shelter with an unvaccinated pet or losing them during an evacuation. If possible, take your pet's medical records with you and attach their rabies tag to their collar. Find out which shelters allow pets Do some research into where you can safely evacuate with your pet during a state of emergency before a disaster occurs. Your local police department can typically give you this information. If not, they'll likely be able to point you in the direction of someone who can. Though unfortunate, it is not true that hotels must accept pets during evacuations, so please keep that in mind while planning ahead. Prepare a pet disaster kit In a suitcase or other easily movable storage container, pack food and water bowls, a manual can opener, two weeks' worth of canned food and bottled water per pet, plastic poop bags for dogs , litter and a small litter box for cats , and two weeks' worth of any medications your pet may need. You should also pack cleaning items, sturdy leashes and harnesses, toys, and a copy of your pet's medical records. For small animals and cats, have a carrier ready. Use this checklist to prepare. Create handouts Create an identification handout and a boarding instruction handout. Have both ready to go at a moment's notice. They should contain important information, such as your pet's name, age, sex, markings, microchip number, allergies, and vaccination status. If you get separated from your pet, make sure you're safe before you begin your search. If you're in a shelter that houses pets, inform a caretaker and provide them with the identification handout. Once you've been given the OK to leave the shelter and return home, contact animal control and call the microchip company to make sure all information about you and your pet is current. To make a very long story short, she went on to become the saving grace of my life and a certified therapy dog who was with me for 13 years. After she crossed over that rainbow bridge, I did a lot of research with adoption agencies and came across SGRR. After filling out the application and being interviewed I was offered a dog by the name of Daisy, a beautiful red Golden Retriever. I thought I would never feel about another dog the way I felt about my Julie but it was not long before I fell in love with that sweet, sweet girl who was also with me for 13 years. Everyone loved Daisy, she would go up to people and do that lean into thing, a Golden thing, and they would just laugh and pet her. That is when I realized what an amazing organization, so full of caring and wonderful people who often go above and beyond for these wonderful animals. When my Daisy girl crossed over after a few months went by I thought it time to bring another friend home. Golden Retrievers had become hard to find so I decided to take a mixed breed home which was a big deal for me being the Golden Retriever lover that I am. He loves people and gets very excited with everyone and will jump up in the air like an acrobat we are working on that , but a great dog. I would encourage everyone to think about a mixed breed. GRRAND was contacted by a shelter that feared bringing Athena and her pups into their shelter, because they were going to have to euthanize them all upon intake due of lack of space!! It took a village, but they are all safe, bathed and in foster homes! They all apparently lived in a barn stall, never leaving it, and standing on a ton of feces, which they were covered in when they arrived. Some of the pups are terrified, having lived in the barn stall, with no socialization, all their lives and are going to need families with a lot of patience! Kane known as Charles and Penelope are in the same foster home and here is what she has to say about them: "They are definitely more settled in now and some personality is starting to slowly show. Getting used to people is completely new for them and it shows, as you know. However, they both get excited, happy and eager when any of my dogs come around. Miss P or Charles have no issues with appetite, wrestling with each other, tolerate baths and the more exposure to odd things they have, I think they will turn into a very sweet and great dogs. Be in the lookout for the famous side eye he throws! He loves belly rubs and takes better to being held than his sister. These puppies all will need a secure above ground fenced yard as Great Pyrs love to be in their yard to protect and patrol, and this happens best when they are in a secure space! GRRAND policies stipulate a few important things that may stop you from applying, and here are 2 big ones- A: GRRAND will NOT place a puppy under the age of 6 months with families with children under 6 yrs old B: Any applicant with children under the age of 16, will require a home with direct access to a securely fenced yard… meaning direct access to the yard from the home… so this means no apartments or condos. As with all puppies, they will need a home where someone is home most of the time as they need to be fed regularly, and let to go outside consistently and constantly ALL DAY LONG so potty training can be a breeze. They will be looking for a home with a fenced in yard and a family with LOTS of time and patience to socialize and work with a puppy so they can grow up to be good pups! It is a lot of fun, but it is a lot of work, and if you don't have the time, an active and non-stop playful puppy may not be for you! Families must understand there needs to be constant supervision as children of all ages need to learn to respect an animal and puppies, and need to be taught boundaries. We are excited these pups will finally get to know what a nice soft bed, in a warm and cozy home with a loving family is all about!

Can you give dogs paracetamol and what is the best pain relief for dogs? We speak to the vets to find out all you need to know By Lisa Joyner Updated: 16 March Are you wondering whether you can give dogs paracetamol? There are lots of pain relief options to help stiffness, soreness and muscle pain in dogs, but what pain relief is safe for pups and how much should you give them? What can you give a dog for pain relief? Paracetamol can be given to dogs, however it requires a different dose. It can be toxic to your dog if you give them too much. This must always be approved by a vet. However, before doing so, they will carefully calculate a safe dose, taking into account any health issues your dog has, and any other medications they are taking," PDSA Vet, Claire Roberts, tells Country Living. She tells us: "If you feel that your pet is in need of pain relief, you must seek advice from your vet — never give them human pain relief unless your vet has asked you to, some forms can be highly toxic. If your pet accidentally eats a human painkiller you should contact your vet immediately. A 20kg dog would need to ingest over seven mg tablets to suffer toxicity. For cats, one mg paracetamol tablet could be fatal. Paracetamol causes severe damage to the liver and red blood cells. Aspirin is toxic to cats, even at relatively low doses, so can only be used under veterinary supervision," Nick adds. Boswellia, White Willow and Devil's Claw are routinely used in dogs. Talk to a herb vet to get dosing right. Paracetamol can be highly dangerous if the wrong dosage is given. Remember to always dose with food and stop if there are signs of vomiting. The dose in Pardale V works out at 33mg of paracetamol for every kg of body weight, three times daily. Unknown What is a domestic dog? While these animals vary drastically in appearance, every dog—from the Chihuahua to the Great Dane—is a member of the same species, Canis familiaris. This separates domestic dogs from wild canines , such as coyotes, foxes, and wolves. A third of all households worldwide have a dog, according to a consumer insights study. This makes the domestic dog the most popular pet on the planet. Evolutionary origins All dogs descend from a species of wolf, but not the gray wolf Canis lupus , like many people assume. In fact, DNA evidence suggests that the now-extinct wolf ancestor to modern dogs was Eurasian. However, scientists are still working to understand exactly what species gave rise to dogs. When dogs broke off from their wild ancestors is also a matter of mystery, but genetics suggest that it occurred between 15, and 30, years ago. Perhaps wolves started down this path simply by eating human scraps. Many generations later, humans might have encouraged wolves to stay near by actively feeding them. Later still, those wolves may have been welcomed into the human home and eventually bred to encourage certain traits. All of this is thought to have unfolded over thousands of years. For instance, around 9, years ago , ancient peoples began breeding dogs that were best able to survive and work in the cold. These dogs would become the family of sled dogs—including breeds such as huskies and malamutes—that remains relatively unchanged today. Similarly, humans bred German shepherds for their ability to herd livestock, Labrador retrievers to help collect ducks and other game felled by hunters, and sausage-shaped Dachshunds for their ability to rush down a burrow after a badger. Many more breeds were created to fill other human needs, such as home protection and vermin control. Certain breeds have also been created to make dogs more desirable as companions. For instance, the labradoodle, which combines the traits of a Labrador retriever and a poodle, was invented as an attempt to create a hypoallergenic guide dog. Please be respectful of copyright. They can also help conservationists find and protect endangered species using their super-powered schnozzes. They assist search and rescue teams in the wake of natural disasters or reports of people lost in the outdoors. Dogs trained to warn of hidden explosives and enemies serve as allies in military operations. Other dogs assist police looking for jail escapees or the bodies of murder victims. Some partner instead with customs officials searching for contraband, from drugs to elephant ivory. Still others lead the way tracking down poachers , patrolling cargo ships for rats that might escape at distant harbors, or exposing forest insect pests in shipments of wood from abroad. They guide deaf and blind people, and they help people with autism and post-traumatic stress disorder manage with anxiety. Living with dogs Most dogs are a mix of breeds—in , one study estimated that only 5 percent of dogs in shelters are purebred. Just as dogs come in all sizes, shapes, and colors, these animals also come in a spectrum of temperaments. A bulldog might look fierce but be cuddly as a kitten, whereas a cute cocker spaniel might nip at your finger without thinking twice. This is why animal handling expert Jack Hanna recommends teaching children to always exercise caution around a dog they do not know. The point is it can happen. After all, the yipping and tail-wagging your dog performs when you grab a bag of treats are carry-overs from when its ancestors needed to communicate with other members of its social group. Chasing sticks and balls may be linked to the pursuit of prey, while digging at the carpet or a dog bed echoes how a wild canid would prepare its sleeping area. I have two German Shepherd dogs, one of which is called Biscuit because his coat is very light with brown patches. My wife and I moved from the UK to Ohio where we now live with our two daughters. We love squash on weekends and following the English Premier League closely! Previous Article. Lifespan Sociability Since the German Shepherd is one of the most popular breeds in the United States, there are plenty of reputable breeders, and finding a puppy is usually not a problem. That said, they can vary fairly widely in price, as some are bred purely for the pet trade, while others are bred as working dogs and will cost a fair bit more. While the German Shepherd is one of the most recognizable breeds in the world, they are actually a fairly recent breed. German Shepherds as we know them today were first bred in the late s by Max von Stephanitz, with a dog by the name of Horand becoming the first officially registered German Shepherd. They have American Kennel Club recognition. They go by several names. During World War I and II, both Americans and Europeans sought to get rid of the German part of the name due to its association, and the dog thus became known as the Alsatian in most of Europe. Image Credit: Pixabay 4. They are highly intelligent. German Shepherds are widely considered among the most intelligent dogs on the planet. They are immensely popular. According to the AKC, since , German Shepherds have consistently ranked second in the United States for the most popular dog breed, with only the family-favorite Labrador Retriever above them. They served in both World Wars. During World War I, German Shepherds were used by both the Germans and Allied forces for carrying messages and distributing food and as rescue dogs and as personal guards. After the war, soldiers were impressed by the capabilities of the breed. They are Hollywood stars. German Shepherds have long had starring roles in many Hollywood movies, with Rin Tin Tin being the most well-known, with dozens of movies throughout the early s. They were one of the first seeing-eye dogs in the U. Dogs are commonly used as an aid for people with visual impairment or complete blindness. Although this role is now often associated with Labradors or Golden Retrievers, German Shepherds were among the first. There are few dogs more adorable than German Shepherd puppies, and there is no shortage of homes for them. They come in eleven recognized colors. The classic black and tan German Shepherd is the color most associated with the breed, but these dogs actually come in 11 different colors. Their loyalty, intelligence, and versatility are almost unmatched by any other breed, evidenced by their use in so many ways. Short-haired German Shepherds grow inches tall for males and weigh lbs, whereas short-haired females grow inches and weigh lbs. Their height and weight are similar to the medium and long-coated varieties. While long-haired varieties have topcoats that are twice as long as the short-haired dogs, this type has double coats. Short-haired German Shepherds belonging to the working line will be less bulky than show lines. This is primarily due to different genes, but you can exaggerate the size difference with the working lines being trimmed closer to the coat and show lines having their coats fluffed up for conformation events. Temperament Personality Traits of the Short-Haired German Shepherd Since short-haired German Shepherds are classed as the standard of the breed, their personality traits are what you would expect. However, the way you treat them also shapes their personality. The two types begin cultivating different traits, with the long-haired being treated differently than short-haired ones. Socially intelligent Short-haired German Shepherds are socially intelligent because their potential for observation is honed by their owners, who adopt them for work or enroll them in the show circuit. The long-haired types are often adopted by novice dog parents who fall in love with the pup for personal reasons. Nonetheless, both types make good pets. Alert While short-haired German Shepherds can be incredibly alert, this trait is often watered down by lack of reward. Even though you and your doggo might agree on how wrong that is, the social norms dictate that this is fine. Compound this for a year, and you have a best friend who is alert but for very specific things. Loyal Short-haired German Shepherds are loyal dogs , and their loyalty is cemented further as they bond with their owners. They shed more during the fall and spring because of their undercoat change. This means their owners brush them more frequently than long-coated dogs who shed at the same rate year-round. Brushing is therapeutic for the owner and pleasant for the pup because of the attention he receives. As a result, short-haired German Shepherds bond very quickly with their owners. They are interested in exploring and can often get distracted by external stimuli. Coupled with their high energy, this sense can make them hard to handle if not appropriately trained. They need walks, but if they cannot focus, they end up making you walk a longer distance and in more directions than you planned. To avoid this, you must know how to take care of a short-haired German Shepherd. Short-haired German Shepherds shed consistently throughout the year and lose their undercoats rapidly during the fall and spring seasons. Long-haired types, in contrast, do not shed more during fall or spring. However, they too require the same regular brushing regimen. Short-haired German Shepherds do not get cold as their woolly undercoat acts as an insulating layer and prevents their body heat from escaping, which helps them stay relatively warm in colder weather. The breed is perfectly capable of living and sleeping outside if exposed and trained from an early age. Therefore, they too get cold in extreme temperatures but survive relatively cold weather like their short-haired cousins. Again, because this variety accounts for almost the entirety of the breed, I would refer you to my comprehensive article on taking care of German Shepherds. Do you want to learn more about GSD care? Health Common Health Problems Short-haired German Shepherds seem privileged in that they have better acceptance than other types. But there are limits to the perks of any breed, and with long hair, medium, or short, health problems remain a significant concern. Here are some medical complications a short-haired German Shepherd is prone to. Degenerative Disc Disease. The fur sometimes flies among German shepherd fanciers regarding coat lengths. What the hairball, right? The overwhelming majority of German shepherds have moderately short to medium-length hair, as dictated by the breed standard. The term is primarily used to distinguish them from long-haired GSDs. Some long-haired individuals lack an undercoat, and they sometimes cost more due to their rarity. However, they are essentially the same pooch otherwise. Long-haired shepherds also occur, but both the AKC breed standard and UKC standard call for one coat length as we mentioned: medium. Excessively long or short, close-cropped coats are deemed faults. A standard German shepherd has a thick, medium-length coat that may appear slightly longer around the neck and rear legs. This is a point of contention in many breeds with differing looks, including Chihuahuas who can be short or long coated and Labs, who come in three colors. Many owners insist there are behavioral differences between types, while others disagree. Personality Differences Generally speaking, appearance has little weight on personality. A German shepherd is a German shepherd. They are large, athletic dogs who love human interaction and thrive when faced with challenges. Dogs from working lines are usually more active with a strong drive compared to show stock. Health Differences As with personality, there are few health differences noted between the short-coated and long-coated shepherds. Any potential health differences between the two can likely be attributed to the coat length. For example, the long-coated variety may be at greater risk of developing hot spots in wet weather. Also, and somewhat counterintuitively, long-coated shepherds are sometimes more susceptible to hypothermia, since they sometimes lack an insulating undercoat. All dedicated GSD breeders as well as those working with any other breed should screen their breeding stock for common health concerns of the breed. Certain colors can lead to issues, however. For example, pale, blue, and liver colors are considered faults, and white is a disqualifying color. On the other hand, long-haired German shepherds do not meet the breed standard since a long coat is considered a fault. These dogs cannot compete in a show ring. No — short-haired GSDs are not rare. In fact, short-coated German shepherds are more common than those with long coats. Additionally, since long-coated GSDs are seen as going against the breed standard, most breeders avoid producing them, or they choose to sell them on a pet-only contract. The point behind this is line of thinking is that every generation of puppy should strive to reach the breed standard. But on the other hand, because of the rarity of the long-coat gene, some breeders deliberately produce them and charge a premium for these long-haired doggos. Also, note that those who opt to breed long-coated shepherds may not always have the same goals as traditional GSD breeders. Now, while the standard calls for a double coat, the undercoat is sometimes lacking in long-haired GSDs. On the surface, this may not appear to be a big deal, but in colder climates, an undercoat is vital in insulating your dog from the elements, so these long-haired pups may actually have a tougher time staying warm. Because the vast majority of short-haired shepherds have an undercoat, they shed more than longer-coated pups who lack one. They also require more brushing around shedding season to remove any loose undercoat. The same is true of long-haired GSDs with an undercoat. Image from Pinterest. The German shepherd dog has a dense coat that sheds regularly. Weekly brushing is recommended to maintain his handsome looks and cut down on tumbleweeds around the house. Brushing should increase during heavy shedding periods, such as when seasons change. Regular tooth brushing and ear cleaning are also musts to keep him in tip-top shape, as is a good flea prevention program.
Use tab to navigate through the menu items. This gene determines how soft the coat will be. Furnishings are facial hair. This trait test is a breeder's best indication for shedding. Hair, Fleece or Wool? Labradoodles can have coats that shed a lot, shed a little, and that do not shed at all. There are differences you should be aware of to help you determine which coat would be better suited for you and your family. It can be difficult for a breeder to predict coat-types for first and second generation F1 or F1b labradoodles. Some pups are wavy when born and have produced very fleece type coats when they got older. Some pups are straighter haired when born and end up with a beautiful fluffy non shedding coat. Then there are some pups that appear like they have a wavy coat, but end up shedding, or a pup that looks wavy but ends up curly as an adult. The only way to know for sure what coat you are getting from an F1b litter, is to have the coats DNA tested. Doodle Sweethearts includes this in their breeding program using Paw Print Genetics! The fleece coat is low to non shedding, depending on 1 or 2 furnishings; tends to look shaggier than wool and it hangs in silky, light, loose locks which flow and ripple when the dog moves. Some feel this is the ultimate labradoodle coat or teddy bear coat. Puppy coat is easy to care for, but during transition to the adult coat, it can become very high maintenance due to matting. The final adult coat may or may not be easy care after puppy transition has been completed. Mostly non-shedding, but some have been known to shed minimally. Should be fairly allergy friendly Should be no doggie odour. Typically seen in F1B labradoodles or second generation and multigen lines. There are different types of fleece coats as well, some fine or thick, some wavy, curly or straight. As a puppy this sometimes can be hard to differentiate between a fleece coat or a wool as an adult, but with DNA coat testing, this can be determined. Fleece and wool coats can be kept short or long depending on your lifestyle but generally need to be clipped times a year every wks Weekly brushing is required to clear any mattes Curly Soft Wool Coat What is a Curly Soft Wool Coat? Wool is generally non shedding; it is denser and thicker, curlier and soft.Fleece and wool coats can be kept short or long depending on your lifestyle but generally need to be clipped times a year every wks Weekly brushing is required to clear any mattes Unlike some other breeds, dogs with fleece and wool coats shed very little dander skin cells a common cause of allergies in humans which makes them excellent for households with allergies. Proudly created with Wix. What is a Straight Hair Labradoodle? Some may have a scruffy look where tufts of hair sprout out of their body, while also having a short wavy or curly fur undercoat covering their body. Other straight hairs are completely covered in medium-long fur, that grows consistently all over their face and body. Their coats can range from straight to wavy hair, similar to a labrador. They can also be slick and glossy, or flat and matte, with feathering along the tails, and around the legs and face. Typically a straight coat will vary in length and thickness, with no two dogs from the same litter being guaranteed to have the same type of fur growth. As puppies, straight hair coats will not begin to grow out their hair until they are eight weeks old. By the time they are 12 weeks old, it will be clear as to what sort of coat the puppies will have. No, not all labradoodles have curly fur. They have both fur and hair actually. You may have noticed that I have been freely switching between the two during my explanations. This is because hair and fur are the same thing. Can Straight Hair Coats be Shaved? Typically the answer will be no. If you live in a hot country, then during the summer times, it might be worth considering to give them a trim. Not a shave! Just a light trim to help stop their bodies from over heating. The fur coat, actually protects their skin from sun burn, and helps to prevent it from drying out, which can cause skin conditions. Clean up the hair around the dogs face, in particular around the eyes, if it has bushy eyebrows, and around the muzzle. It is best to look at reducing the length of the fur in areas that can could cause health problems or discomfort, if the fur was to become clumped up and mattered. How to Best Control Shedding? Straight haired labradoodles shed a lot more than any other labradoodles. As tempting as it may be to shave your furry companion to help counter shedding. It nonetheless remains inadvisable and should be avoided. It can be lessened however. Just as we humans shed hair, so will a healthy and happy dog. Throughout the year, your pooch will continue to shed hair, more so as the weather warms up and their winter coat falls out. To counter this, get in the habit of giving your dog regular grooming. A little bit of brushing can go a long way. It removes loose hair, and helps to re-affirm the bond between you and your dog, as they enjoy the attention and can even find the grooming to be relaxing. Bathing your dog should be kept to a minimum as the shampoos and warm water can lead to dry skin and other skin conditions. Instead take your dog for swims or use lukewarm water to rinse off their coats. The most important thing to remember is to keep your dog in a comfortable environment, as stress can cause a dog to shed even more. A good diet helps to promote stronger hair follicles and a shinny coat, that can help reduce shedding. Some owners later discover that they are allergic to straight haired labradoodles. While it may be tempting to shave off their fur, in an attempt to eliminate the allergic reactions. This should never be done! Allergies are not triggered by dog fur. They are caused by pet dander — skin particles that are shed by the dog all year long. By shaving the fur off, the owner is actually making things worse for themselves. It drys the skin out, removing moisture and causes rashes to develop. As a result more skin is shed, exposing the pet owner to more dander. As more skin conditions develop or worsen, the dog will start scratching releasing even more dander into the air. How Often Should a Dog be Bathed? Bathing your dog can be effected by many different factors and can be very situational. You may need to bath them more frequently for medical reasons, or because of what they have decided to roll in. Generally speaking, bathing your labradoodle should be more infrequent. Over bathing your dog can strip its fur of natural oils that help to protect their skin and strengthen their hair. Ideally, you should limit proper bathes to when they start to smell a little, or if you need to remove matter from their fur. If they are just dirty with dust and mud, use lukewarm water or a running hose to wash away the dirt. Alternatively encourage them to swim in a body of water such as a river or at the beach while under your supervision. As a precautionary measure you can get a life jacket for your labradoodle. When you do need to give them a proper bath, use a mild oatmeal or coconut based dog shampoo. It will strip away some of the oils from their coat, but these types of shampoos will help to keep the skin moisturized. Over bathing can lead to skin irritations that can be itchy and uncomfortable. Dogs do not need to have baths as much as humans need to. How to Watch Out for Skin Conditions If your Labradoodle has any skin conditions, this could cause them to shed more fur, or even release more dander into the air. They may show signs of a skin condition by excessive scratching or nipping and licking at the same area. Remember mites and parasites can cause just as much damage to the skin as over-bathing. If you are wondering if the straight hair coats are the sort of labradoodles for you, please consider the following points: Their coats require the lowest level of maintenance. They do shed a lot more then other coats. They look more like labradors, than poodles. They may not be suitable for people with dog allergies. No two straight hairs will have the same coat. Related posts:. As you might have guessed, this dog is a cross between poodle and Labrador parents — and the result is an adorable bundle of joy with a sweet, gentle personality. Labradoodle puppy coats come in a range of colors and textures, so labradoodle owners are spoiled for choice when choosing their fur baby. Read on to discover more about Labradoodles and labradoodle coat types. What Are Hypoallergenic Dog Coats? Hypoallergenic dogs have less of a thick coat than many other breeds. A highly shedding coat presents a higher risk to allergy sufferers than non-shedding dogs like a labradoodle puppy. As a dog with one of the most allergy-friendly coats , there are a few practicalities to keep in mind when it comes to your labradoodle pooch and its coat. Pretty much every labradoodle puppy goes through a coat change, which is separate from a shedding coat. The puppy coat is eventually replaced by an adult coat, which comes with more grooming requirements. Types of Labradoodle Puppy Coats One of the best things about labradoodle dogs is the wide range of choices with regard to appearance. Wool Coat You can determine if your Labradoodle puppy has a fleece coat. You can identify fleece coats by the way the fur sits between the eyes, as this area starts to get curly first. This is the curliest coat type, but it still comes in a variety of types. Some dogs with a curly coat have a cotton-type coat, which is the softest but also incredibly high maintenance. Labradoodle puppies with wool Labradoodle puppy coats are mainly non-shedding and can make great companions for pet owners with allergies. Fleece Coat Doodles with a fleece coat require a little less maintenance than the other types of doodles, but they still need weekly brushing and plenty of TLC. A fleece-coated labradoodle is the result of combining a curly wool coat gene with the gene for a straight coat. Areas such as the ears and collar are particularly prone to getting matted, so be sure to pay close attention to these areas when you brush your fleece-coated labradoodle once or twice per week. Hair Coat A labradoodle with a straight coat has inherited most of its fur genes from its Labrador retriever parent. Something interesting about Labradoodles is that their Labradoodle puppy coats change as they get older, so your hair-coated labradoodle might get a wave to its fur as it gets older. While you can also take it to a professional groomer on a weekly basis, this can incur hefty grooming costs. Most labradoodle owners opt to take their dog to a groomer once a month or two and do regular adult coat maintenance themselves. Use the correct type of dog brush and be sure to get all the way down to the skin. Give your dog a brush before and after bath time. All puppies eventually lose their puppy coat to make way for their adult coat, this goes the same with Labradoodle puppy coats. You might find the new type of coat is totally different from the old coat. Coats and Generational Differences The amount of hair your dog sheds varies between puppies, but generational differences can also play a role. First-generation doodles shed slightly more than second-generation doodles, with multigenerational Labradoodles shedding even less. We genetically test each breeding parent to make sure the shedding genes are not passed on to the puppies in our training program. We adore the breed and have a wide range of Labradoodle puppies for sale to choose from, with different color and type of Labradoodle puppy coats. First generation Labradoodles, the litter of a Poodle and Labrador parent, typically have a non shedding coat that is wavy with loose curls. A F1B Labradoodle, the direct result of one Labradoodle parent one Poodle parent, generally have wavy or fleece fur. Both F1 Labradoodles and F1B generation Labradoodles are recommended for those families with allergy sufferers. In saying this, non-allergenic hair coated Labradoodles, are the most common in the first generation breeds. A hair coated Labradoodle does not look similar in appearance to their fleece and wool coated brothers and sisters. A hair coated Labradoodle often referred to as having a straight coat looks more like their Labrador parent. Often these Labradoodles look scruffy in appearance. The muzzle area of a hair coated Labradoodle will be smooth and straight. They do not have the typical fluffy teddy appearance that the typical Labradoodle sports. While a hair coated Labradoodle sheds, their coat can be easily maintained. These dogs are great for families that are time poor for daily grooming although they are not suited to families that have allergies. A hair coated Labradoodle is often only the result in a first generation litter. The hair coated Labradoodles are less desirable by breeders due to the fact their hair coat sheds often. The hair coat feels wiry to touch. Furthermore, the coat of a fleece Labradoodle is said to be the easiest to maintain. This low shedding coat generally a non-shedding coat should be brushed out at least once a week. Fleece coated Labradoodles should feel soft to touch. The curls within the fleece can be slightly wavy to noticeably wavy. Kemp a course hair is often found around the eyes of a fleece coated Labradoodle. The tightness of the curl purely depends on the Labradoodles genetics. While some wool coated Labradoodles have tight curls that appear similar to the coat of their Poodle parent, others have a loose curled coat. If you own a curly coated Labradoodle, it is recommended that you groom your dog once a day. Alternatively, you may opt to shave your dogs coat shorter so that it can be easily maintained. The coat of a curly Labradoodle can almost be guaranteed to be non-shedding. Mats in a Labradoodles fur make it uncomfortable for them to run and lead an active lifestyle. It is recommended to take wool coated Labradoodles to a professional groomer every six weeks to maintain a healthy coat. A wool coated Labradoodle feels soft to touch and has a coat similar to that of a lamb. The wool coat of a Labradoodle should hang with hollow spiral when groomed appropriately. Often wool coated Labradoodles have dense and thick fur. Allowing your dogs coat to grow excessively leads to matting and in turn pain for your Labradoodle. The shedding coat is not desirable in this breed which is generally the result of a hair coated Labradoodle. In terms of grooming your Labradoodle, it is recommended to book them in to see a trained dog groomer every 6 to 8 weeks. This applies to any coat type. Although hair coats do not require as much maintenance, the hair inside your dogs ears should be plucked regularly to avoid infection and build up. Furthermore, your dogs nails will need to be clipped regularly especially if you only have grass and no concrete. Regularly home grooming should be performed to keep your Labradoodles coat in pristine condition without matting. Ensure you purchase a pet grooming brush recommended for long and thick hair while you Labradoodle is still a puppy. Related posts:. Finding a smooth coat Labradoodle puppy A smooth Labradoodle is also known as a straight hair Labradoodle, or a flat coated Labradoodle. It has a coat texture which more closely resembles a Labrador than a Poodle. Owing to the way curly coats are inherited, a smooth coat Labradoodle is most likely to come from an F1b or multigen Labradoodle litter. This can also affect their temperament too. These home videos of black Labradoodle Franklin growing up show that his coat stays shorter and smoother than the traditional image of a Labradoodle. What is a smooth Labradoodle? A smooth Labradoodle is a Labrador-Poodle cross, with a relatively short straight coat. All animals inherit their genes in pairs, one from each parent. Labradors all have two copies of the straight coat gene. And most if not all Poodles have two copies of the curly coat gene. First generation Labradoodles get one of each, and since the effects of the curly coat gene are dominant over the effects of the straight coat gene, all first generation Labradoodles have curly coats. Smooth F1 Labradoodles The only way a first generation F1 Labradoodle could have a straight coat is if their Poodle parent was carrying one copy of the straight coat gene. It is possible that small numbers of Poodles do silently carry one copy of the straight coat gene. As long as the number of individuals carrying the straight hair gene remains low, the likelihood of them mating with another carrier and producing straight haired puppies is tiny, so the presence of the straight coat gene can remain hidden for many generations. In a similar example, small numbers of Labradors carry the genes which produce long coats and tan points! Breeding a Labradoodle dog with straight hair Smooth coat Labradoodles are more usually the result of either backcrossing, or multigenerational breeding. Backcrossing means mating a mixed breed dog with a purebred dog again. Mating an F1 Labradoodle with a purebred Labrador produces an F1b generation of puppies, and approximately half of them will have straight coats. Multigenerational breeding means breeding Labradoodles with other Labradoodles. Mating an F1 Labradoodle with an F1 Labradoodle produces an F2 generation of puppies, and approximately one quarter of them will have straight coats. Subsequent generations for example produced by mating an F1 Labradoodle and and F2 Labradoodle, or two F2 Labradoodles might also have smooth coated puppies in them, depending on the genetic makeup of the parents. With us so far? Among Labradoodles, smooth coated is used as a simple synonym for straight. What does a Labradoodle look like with smooth hair? An F1b Labradoodle with a smooth coat is likely to look more like a Labrador than a Poodle. If their coat is very smooth, and one of the standard Labrador colors, you might even find that people mistake them for a pedigree Lab. But a smooth Labradoodle could have a straight coat and a distinctly Poodle-like frame. Labradors and Poodles were both originally bred for the same purpose — to retrieve waterfowl that had been shot on hunts, and carry it back to their owner. My own favorite Labradoodle friend has a short, smooth coat, a lean but Labrador-esque face, and long legs like a Poodle — she looks like a supermodel! Can Labradoodles start out smooth-coated and turn curly? All dogs are born with a puppy coat, which is softer, finer, and less shiny than their adult coat. Labradoodle puppy coats are generally shorter, less curly and lie flatter than their adult coat. They will start to shed their puppy coat and gradually replace it with an adult coat from about 6 months old onwards. If there is a known possibility that your puppy will have a smooth adult coat too, your breeder should be honest with you about that from the start. But remember, mixed breed coats can be surprising! Smooth Labradoodle temperament Labradoodles have become enormously successful family pets thanks to their winning personalities. They tend to be sociable, good-natured, playful and affectionate. These qualities are common to Labs and Poodles, so Labradoodles reliably have them too. If anything, Labradors tend to be more friendly with other dogs than Poodles are, and less likely to display watchdog or guarding behaviors. An F1b smooth Labradoodle with a purebred Labrador parent has more Labrador heritage overall, and that might also be reflected in their personality too. Smooth coat Labradoodle grooming One advantage of a straight coat Labradoodle is that they typically require less grooming than curly Labradoodles. This is especially true of doodles with short smooth coats. But remember that hair length is controlled separately to texture, so your dog could have fur which is smooth and long. Long Labradoodle coats in all textures are especially prone to matting between 6 months and a year old. This is because the soft baby coat tends to get caught up and tangled in the coarse adult coat as it falls out. So pay special attention to grooming during this time. NOTE: Short straight coats should not be shaved or clipped except as part of medical treatment, as they may not grow back properly. Do smooth coat Labradoodles shed? Smooth coat Labradoodles are more likely to shed than a curly coat Labradoodles, although they may still shed less than purebred Labs. Regular brushing can make a big difference to how much fur ends up on your sofa! The protein molecules which trigger an allergic reaction in dog allergy sufferers actually come from their saliva and to a lesser extent their sweat and urine not their hair. So a smooth Labradoodle is no more allergenic than a curly or wavy Labradoodle, and none of them are truly hypoallergenic. Smooth haired Labradoodles: May have a more Labrador like temperament, depending on their ancestry. Are likely to shed more. But will carry less muddy water home at the end of a walk. Need less day-to-day grooming. Curly haired Labradoodles. Also, your fleece coats, while, overall, are softer than your wool coats in texture, still have some texture variation within the fleece coat type. The Australian Labradoodle requires varying degrees of grooming depending on their coat type. A light trimming might be required with scissors but usually not. However, we do not have any hair coat in Sunset Hills, because our puppies are all multi-gen. This coat usually requires trimming once or twice a year. This coat also requires trimming about three-four times a year. All allergy and asthma friendly labradoodles have a coat change from puppy to adult usually between months of age. During their coat change, it is recommended that you groom them daily. The coat change can last anywhere from a week to several weeks. This is usually the time when owners decide that their beautiful furry doodle needs a shorter look. Note: Not all Labradoodles are Allergy and Asthma friendly. We do recommend that if you have the opportunity to meet one of these wonderful dogs in person that you should check to see if you have any reactions before you make your decision in purchasing your new puppy. We recommend that any family or person who suffers from dog related severe allergies or asthma should look into a Wool coated labradoodle as they have the highest success rate. They take more after the Labrador side of the breed with a scruffy medium length coat rather than a curly or wavy coat that people usually associate with the breed. Standard sized Straight Hair Labradoodles grow to 51 to 66cm and weigh 23 to 45kg. On the other hand, Miniature Straight Hair Labradoodles get to 40 to 51cm in height and weigh 12 to 23kg. Yes, Straight Haired Labradoodles need basic grooming like all dogs, requiring a weekly brush to remove shedded hair and the occasional bath to keep them clean. Nevertheless, they do not need to be taken to the groomer for a trim every weeks like their curly coat relatives which can save owners quite a bit of money yearly. Do Straight Haired Labradoodles Shed? Yes, Straight Haired Labradoodles shed quite considerably like their Labrador parents. They are the opposite of Curly or Wavy Haired Labradoodles who hardly shed at all. No, Straight Haired Labradoodles are not hypoallergenic as they shed due to the dominance of Labrador genes over Poodle genes. They are unlike Wavy or Curly Haired Labradoodles which are hypoallergenic due to their long, curly coat that needs to be cut. That being said, straight haired Labradoodles are more hypoallergenic than a purebred Labrador. You can read our full Labradoodle shedding guide here. This is most likely to occur in a first generation Labradoodle F1 Labradoodle when a Labrador and Poodle are bred together rather than two Labradoodles. Whilst most people believe that all Labradoodles have a wavy or curly coat, it is actually very common for Labradoodles to have straight haired coat, taking after their Labrador parent more than the Poodle. Some Labradoodles look more like Labradors then Poodles, especially when they have a straight coat instead of a wavy or curly one. This occurs when Labradoodles do not inherit the curly coat gene called the Cu Locus gene and most commonly occurs for F1 Labradooodles. F2 Labradoodle is when an F1 Labradoodle is bred with another F1 Labradoodle resulting in a fifty-fifty chance of Straight Hair Labradoodles occurring in the litter. If you are looking for a Straight Hair Labradoodle you will want to get an F1 or F2 litter as they have the highest change of the straight hair gene of the Labrador coming through. No, not all F1 Labradoodles will have straight hair however a significant percentage of the litter will. F1 Labradoodles can have any coat type from wavy to curly to straight as it is a first generation breed of a Labrador Retriever and Poodle. No, Straight Hair Labradoodles do not have a double coat like their Labrador parent. Instead they have a single coat. As the weather gets hotter, Straight Hair Labradoodles will start shedding a little more than usual. Nevertheless, colour changes as expected for maturing Labradoodles. The colour of their coats often change colour or fade several shades lighter as they become an adult. Check out the adorable Labradoodle puppies that are currently available here! This typically includes a health certificate from the veterinarian, as well as documentation of any genetic tests that have been performed. This is because your puppy will need regular vet check-ups and vaccinations. A good breeder will be able to provide you with the contact information for their veterinarian. They should also be willing to let you meet the veterinarian and tour their office. When you visit your breeder, there are a few questions that you should always ask. Here are some of the most important ones: How long have you been breeding German Shepherds? Do you have any references from past customers? Can I meet some of your past customers? What genetic tests have been performed on the puppy? Is the puppy up-to-date on his vaccinations and deworming? Who will be responsible for training the puppy? You should also be able to determine whether or not they are knowledgeable about the breed Look Out for The Signs of An Unethical German Shepherd Dog Breeder in Ohio There are some red flags that you should definitely watch out for when buying a German Shepherd puppy. The prices seem too good to be true. If you see any of these red flags, it might be best to move on and find another breeder in Ohio. If this is the case, the breeder should be willing to let you know which of their dogs have been affected by these diseases and give you some information about how it affects them. They should also be able to provide documentation from a veterinarian that states the dog has been tested for these problems. If a breeder tells you that none of their dogs have ever had any health problems, they may not be telling the truth. You will need a crate, food and water bowls, a collar and leash, and a bed. Set up a designated area for the puppy to potty. This should be a spot where you can easily clean it up. Buy some toys to keep the puppy entertained. Make sure you have a vet appointment scheduled for the puppy as soon as possible. Puppy proof your home by removing any objects that the puppy could chew on or swallow. About the German Shepherd The German Shepherd is a breed of medium to large-sized working dog that originated in Germany. As part of the Herding Group, German Shepherds are working dogs developed originally for herding sheep. Since that time, however, because of their strength, intelligence, trainability and obedience, German Shepherds around the world are often the preferred breed for many types of work, including disability assistance, search-and-rescue, police and military roles, and even acting. The German Shepherd is the second-most popular breed of dog in the United States and fourth-most popular in the United Kingdom. Average Height: Male in. Bred originally for herding, and later used heavily for police and military work, the German Shepherd dog requires a very special and balanced temperament in order to fulfill its purpose. Temperament, workability, versatility, drives, nerves and all other aspects of the dog can be assessed and verified via training, competition and judgement from officials. Even if you do not want to compete in any sports or work your dog, you still want a dog that is capable of it. Saying you "just want a pet, not a show or working dog" could leave you with an unsound dog who is not capable of doing the things it was bred to do. Just because your German Shepherd will be a family companion, doesn't mean you have to settle for anything less than a sound, healthy and trust worthy dog. We never breed for size, color, or anything superficial. We only breed our highest quality dogs. The answer is clear: Avoid Craigslist when buying animals! If you find a reputable local breeder, they will welcome you to the site to visit with them and meet the parent dogs. Some may allow you to see the pups, but access is sometimes restricted to stop them from getting sick. Check out the breeder thoroughly, and be sure to ask questions. A good breeder will tell you to do this anyway, as they have nothing to hide and will be only too pleased to connect you with happy customers who will provide testimonials. Even so, these beautiful animals can be found in shelters across America, along with thousands of other dogs. If you feel like you are still confused about how to choose the right breeder, create a checklist and check off the items one by one as you go down the list. The breeder that checks all your boxes is the right one! Start your checklist with customer reviews. Read online reviews to find out what people say about your chosen breeders. Look for reviews on Google, social media platforms, and third-party sites like Yelp. If the reviews are generally positive on all channels, you can be sure they are authentic and trustworthy. Moreover, you can also ask about the breeder in local Facebook groups, your circle of friends and family, and your vet. Customer reviews are the best way to determine the authenticity of a breeder. The second item on your checklist should be health checks; check if the breeder of your choice religiously follows health checks. To make sure that the health of your adopted dog is not compromised or the health of all the dogs overall is ensured, ask the breeder about the frequency of health checks and genetic testing protocols. Make sure the breeder you are adopting from gives you the vaccination card for your dog that has all the latest information. Lastly, check for valid certifications and registrations. The certifications and registrations vary from place to place and breed to breed. American Kennel Club covers most species in America, but smaller species-specific clubs are also active. German Shepherds generally live for years on average. bulldog puppy temperament - They were bred to be working dogs that can tolerate especially cold weather. If given the choice to stay inside or play outside, they will probably choose to stay outside. Labradoodles have great coats that act as insulation against any extreme temperatures. But even with that coat, you should always check the temperature while your Labradoodle is outside though. Anything above 40 degrees Fahrenheit is fine, but when it gets beneath that you will have to be extra careful. If the temperatures are between 20 and 40 degrees, it can pose a minor threat, but there is a small risk to consider. When the temperature eventually drops beneath 20 degrees, that is where it can get pretty dangerous. If you add rain or snow to the mix, that can change everything. Age Impact and Cold Tolerance Age plays quite a large role in whether or not you can keep your Labradoodle outside on a cold day. This is the same thing with babies; they will also get sick if they are in the cold for too long. This is the same for older dogs. As Labradoodles grow older, it is quite common for them to develop health issues such as for example hip dysplasia. The cold weather will cause more pain to their joints and any other areas that have aged with them. They truly enjoy being in the cold and fooling around in the snow. Exercise During the Winter Exercise is always absolutely essential for any Labradoodles lifestyle, no matter what the temperature outside might be. Labradoodles can quickly become overweight if not trained often enough, so getting a satisfactory amount of exercise each day is super important. They should be outside doing physical exercise for at least 1 hour each day. This could include going on 2 walks each day. If you find that the weather is too cold and that it hurts their paws when walking on the ground, you should consider getting some dog snow boots for them to use just for going on walks. It can also be a good idea to bring your Labradoodle inside before and after the walk so they can get a chance to warm up after being outside in the cold. At that point, it might a good idea for both of you to head inside. Caring for Labradoodles in the Cold Like I mentioned earlier, you will have to take care of your Labradoodle in a different way in the cold weather to keep him or her safe during more extreme conditions. Here are a few things that you will need to consider and adapt for the colder months. There should of course always be water available to your Labradoodle, and water certainly is at risk of freezing when left outside. If possible, you should consider feeding your dog inside when it is too cold outside. They actually need quite a lot of liquids to warm and maintain their body temperature. You should consider switching to stew-type liquid foods for the winter months, this will allow them to get the extra liquid this way. Dogs will also need more fats and proteins during the winter to keep them warm. Look Out for Ticks and Other Bugs Bugs are surprisingly adept at handling pretty extreme temperatures. Especially bugs like ticks and fleas. So you should check your dog for ticks or fleas a lot more often during cold months, just in case that they during their search for warmth, decide to settle down on your Labradoodle. Be Warry of Antifreeze and Rock Salt During the winter months, it is very common for people to put out antifreeze or rock salt to melt the ice and make the ground safer for people to walk on. But by doing this, it can actually make the ground more dangerous for Labradoodles. Antifreeze and rock salt contain chemicals that can be very poisonous to dogs if they eat any it. So make sure that if you are putting out either of these chemicals, you are aware of your Labradoodle potentially coming into contact with them. Ensure Proper Shelter is Available Like I have talked about a couple of different times in this post, Labradoodles really love being in the cold, but this is only true if they have a place where they can go to get warm and dry off. If your Labradoodle is an outside dog , you will have to make sure that they always have a nice warm dry shelter outside that can protect them from the cold and snow or rain. It is really important that their shelter is dry because again, being wet is a lot more dangerous for them. So make sure that you build their outdoor shelter out of a material that is able to completely withstand the rain. You will have to check their outdoor shelter often during the winter just to ensure that it is doing its job of keeping your Labradoodle as safe, warm, dry, and cozy as possible. But as a short summary, these tips are worth remembering when wondering how best to take care of your Labradoodle during the winter months: Age matters, whether if they are too young or too old, keep them inside more often. Watch over their food, water, and shelter. Dry temperatures above 40 degrees are the safe zone, when below that, it should be closely monitored. If you follow these tips and watch your dog carefully, he or she should be perfectly safe and happy during the cold months of winter. Dog Food: Every dog needs to eat correctly, and finding the best food for your dog can be challenging, as the market is absolutely flooded with products. Is there anything better than a good romp in the snow with your four-legged friend? Snow can bring us lots of joy. Some dogs immediately take to the snow and love to roll around and play in it. Other puppies, however, are hesitant to even walk on the snow which can lead to some bathroom issues at times. Not only is the snow cold on their tender toes, but it also blocks the scents that they associate with their potty space. One way to help encourage your puppy to potty outside in winter weather is to clear a place in the backyard several feet wide for them to use as a potty space. This works even better if this space is covered so that your puppy is not standing out in the rain or snow while trying to potty. Make sure you clear a path to the potty place as well. Bundle Up! Younger puppies and older dogs have a hard time regulating their body temperature in extreme heat or cold. If they just recently had a grooming, however, the absence of a long coat may make them more prone to shivering. Bundle your pooch up with a coat if you fear they may get cold! If you plan on spending a lot of time outdoors, invest in some boots for your pup too. The wet snow can cause the pads on their feet to form painful cracks or ice balls can get trapped between their toes causing irritation. Protective booties will help keep your pup happy and healthy! Reduce Outdoor Time Just like humans, pups can suffer from a variety of issues if exposed to extreme cold for lengthened periods of time. Monitor your pups time outdoors and make sure that when they are inside that they are eating and drinking normally. Eating leads to the burning of calories which is what helps keep your dog warm. When bringing your pup inside watch for tell-tale signs of overexposure to the cold such as shivering. If your pup appears to be chilled, dry them off with a warm towel or wrap them up in a blanket until they have warmed back up. Your puppy should adjust to the warmth or the cold at a steady pace. Hypothermia in dogs is very real and can be very dangerous. Share your cute snow-puppy photos in the comments for all of us to enjoy! Labradoodles generally are huge snow-lovers, but sometimes they don't recognize their own limits! Doodles enjoy falling snow, but if sleet or hail is falling, your dog should not be outside for more than a quick potty break. We personally had a dog who took off running, skidded and slipped, caught the front of his leg on a sidewalk joint, and ended up needing eight stitches. Many doodle owners like to keep their dog's fur fairly short to keep maintenance easier, but don't keep it so short that your dog gets easily chilled. Bathe your dog indoors during the winter. It's too cold outside for both of you! This will help by allowing your dog to keep their toes closer together. Long, untrimmed nails will force the toes to spread apart, creating a perfect space for ice balls to get stuck. There are some products you can buy that are specifically for this, but petroleum jelly will work just fine. Rock salt is really hard on their paws; it can cause paws to dry out, crack, or bleed. Additionally, rock salt can make a dog extremely sick or even kill them if ingested in large enough amounts. Their feet, especially, get matted with snow easily and get very cold quickly. If you live in an area that tends to be very snowy, teaching your young puppy to accept boots on their paws will save you a lot of aggravation in the future!! This will usually help melt the snow fairly quickly. We recently saw a post on Instagram on how to use a cooking whisk to help remove snow. The link to the video is below. While we haven't had the opportunity to try it yet, it looks like it would work! If you try it, please let us know how well it worked for you! Enjoy the winter weather with your "snow dog"!
