The following criteria greatly increases the chances that our dogs will find their forever home. If this is your first time owning a boxer, please refer to our boxer breed page. Ho-Bo Care is run entirely by volunteers, so please be patient with us. We do try to get to all applications within a week or two. Home Visits are required for all adoptions. Once your home visit is completed and approved, the volunteer will discuss which dog or dogs may be a good fit for your family. While we understand that a picture may draw you in, please do not select a dog based on looks alone. We do our best to get to know the dogs so that we are finding the best homes for them. We will not place you on a waiting list for a specific color or look. If you do not have a fence you can still adopt. Each dog is evaluated and placed in homes we feel would be ideal for them. All invisible fences use a form of a shock or vibration collar, which is not allowed with us. Invisible fences also do not keep other animals or people that could be hazardous to your dog out of your yard. We teach and train our dogs with positive reinforcements and praise, and we feel invisible fences are contradictory to this kind of training. We are able to adopt to some parts of Wyoming and Nebraska. Once they reach maturity, at age years, they tend to reach a point in their lives when living with another female becomes an issue. While we understand this isn't always the case, we choose to not take these risks. Therefore, we will not place puppies in homes where they will be left alone for long hours. We will not allow any adopter to pick a puppy by the picture or choose based on looks or color. Adoption decisions will be made upon meeting the puppies. Ho-Bo Care will not adopt two puppies of the same age together at the same time. Applications missing this information will not be followed up on. Adoption Fees. If not, here is the form! His love and compassion for Boxers was felt by those who had the pleasure of spending time with him. Ken loved sports and spending time with friends. He also collected sports memorabilia and other collectibles like Hot Wheels. He truly loved Milo, featured in the the photo with him. Every time we received a message from him he included a picture of him and Milo. He never gave up hope that some treatment would be the ultimate cure. He worked as long as he could and made his journey to the light in late June. His weakened system just couldn't fight any longer. He will be deeply missed by WCBR, and we wish his family peace with his loss. Thank you to so many who have donated to WCBR in his memory. Ken will forever be in our hearts. We need your help. The number of Boxers being surrendered by families and in the shelters is overwhelming. We continue to receive owner surrenders a week, along with multiple pleas from surrounding shelters for Boxers in need. So many Boxer are coming from families that are no longer able to financially care for them, just don't want them, many are dealing with illness or the Boxer's pet parent has passed away, and many just are moving. Without the funding or foster homes, sadly we have to turn away these surrenders. Please Foster, Fund or be a Forever Home. Petey Donor Spotlight: Doreen Murotsune For many of us who give our hearts, time, or dollars to rescue, we are first inspired by the love of a single special dog. Hana belonged to friends of Doreen, but Doreen and her boxer, Benjamin, fell in love with her. Benjamin and Hana were best friends, and Benjamin was always on the lookout for Hana and ready to protect her from any yappy Chihuahua who tried to intimidate her. In addition to being an active Strut Your Mutt teammate for each of the past 5 years, Doreen browses the boxers in our care and sponsors many dogs whose stories warm her heart. She not only sponsors dogs with single or repeat financial gifts, but also inquires about dogs with prescription diet needs and then purchases those diets on an autoship schedule, having the food mailed directly to foster homes. Brooks came to us coated in cuts in various stages of healing some of them infected, and scars on top of scars. He was abandoned alongside the highway in Harmony township, and left at the mercy of strangers to save him from being hit — thankfully they did. Brooks is an amazing dog, he is loyal, he is loving, he is cuddly, and he is funny without even meaning to be. But he is also loud, he is also strong, and he is dog selective if they're the same size or larger than him. He is neutered, up to date on vaccines including rabies, microchipped, and on heartworm protection. Meet and greets will take place in Clark County, OH. Here is some more info about Brooks! Brooks would do best in a home with no dogs over 30lbs as he can become very dominate around dogs the same size or larger than him, especially if they are not completely submissive. He would also do best if he lived with someone who worked from home, or is that comfortable with not crating him as he experiences anxiety when crated. He also is a pretty big fan of small dogs, but may give chase to cats at first. We know this is a lot, but Brooks has been through a lot and deserves the perfect home! Breed History In the past, the English bulldog was used by foreign immigrants who moved to South America and brought their dogs with them. The breed, however, became close to extinction after the second world war. Some breeders, John D. Johnson, and Alan Scott kept infusing several bulldogs together in the bid to breed the American Bulldog while monitoring its health and capabilities. Today, the American bulldog is completely rid of the fear of being extinct and has become one of the most popular dog breeds in the country. Temperament The American bulldog is many sizes larger than the English Bulldog; however, they are quite similar when it comes to their temperament. It is basically a huge, cuddly, lap dog that loves children and is very affectionate. It is brave, confident and extremely loyal to its owners. They can be quite reserved when around strangers as they like to mark their territories. When trained from a young age, the American Bulldog will display an impressive level of intelligence. They are not so friendly with other strange dogs and mostly like to keep to themselves. Environment As earlier stated, the American bulldog is a fun-loving, happy dog that thrives in a family setting. The perfect environment for this breed would be a home with a large backyard that is well fenced-in. Since they are very energetic and must be kept active, it is imperative to their growth that they have ample space to run around during the day. This is crucial for their mental and physical well-being. For dog lovers who live in apartments, the American bulldog might not be the best option for them. This is because there is inadequate space for them and being left alone would adversely affect their mental health. They can also become very irritable and destructive if left alone for long periods as they need constant mental and physical stimulation. Exercise The American Bulldog needs about two hours of outdoor exercise on a daily basis. It goes without saying that this breed is not suitable for people who work many hours every day. This dog breed requires basic physical and mental stimulation like jogging, walking, chasing balls, playing fetch, farm work, agility, and basic obedience exercises. Due to the temperament of the American Bulldog, it has to get as much exercise preferably in the outdoors. If its exercise requirements are not consistently met, this dog breed will take out its frustration in your home by chewing apart and basically destroying everything it comes in contact with while running around. Grooming The American Bulldog has quite a short coat with a minimized length and this feature makes it easy to groom. Brushing their coats weekly is usually enough when it comes to grooming the American Bulldog as they do not shed a lot. They also need thorough baths weekly or as needed as this will keep the shedding in check. Our American Bulldog puppies for sale come from either USDA licensed commercial breeders or hobby breeders with no more than 5 breeding mothers. American Bulldogs love routine and will adapt to an exercise and grooming routine if the owner enforces it perfectly. As loyal dogs, they love to please their owners but will only obey upon frequent reinforcements. Do American Bulldogs shed a lot? Since they do not have a lot of fur, they do not shed a lot and owners will not have a lot of hair to clean up, unlike many other dog breeds. Why do American Bulldogs have webbed feet? This is mainly due to genetics and is not a cause for concern. Should American Bulldogs be spayed? Many vets advise that American Bulldog owners should ensure their pets are neutered or spayed when it is between four and nine months. How often should American Bulldogs be fed? The American bulldog has a very large appetite in its formative years. They must, therefore, be fed very often about four times daily and in double portions when they are puppies right until they turn four. Are American Bulldogs a food fit in families? The American bulldog will fit right into your family. They love kids and tend to gravitate towards them. Do American Bulldogs have common health problems? A lot of the health problems experienced by American bulldogs are mostly genetic and do not affect the entire breed. These ailments could range from the kidney to thyroid disorders and a lot more. What is the American Bulldogs life expectancy? The American bulldog has an average lifespan ranging from ten to fifteen years. What is the American Bulldogs average size? The average American Bulldog can grow to 58kg for males and 41kg for females. However, it is important that their diets are closely monitored to keep them from getting overweight. How tall do American Bulldogs get? The male American bulldog can grow as tall as 71cm while its female counterpart can grow up to 61cm. When looking to purchase a merle make sure you are insuring the Australian Labradoodle breeder is having responsible husbandry practices regarding the merle gene. Any breeder of merle multigenerational Australian Labradoodles should be willing and able to discuss all the facts regarding this genome. Click HERE to learn more from our geneticists. Single carrier merles will live a healthy productive life just like any other dog. To ensure that we only breed single copy merles we verify testing of all outside studs or dams used with our breeding dogs since some dogs carry a hidden merle gene, called phantom merle. They are just as strong, silly, and full of adventure or snuggles, and capable of being a service dog as any other Australian Labradoodle! The problem comes down to greed or skipping testing. But doing so can come at a risk of causing serious health issues. A "double merle" known as a homozygous merle have significantly higher risk of being born deaf or blind. To set a president that ill managed breeding practice is not allowed, which is respectable. A German study found .Double Merle can also cause Merle ocular issues. Regarding the blue color in the eyes sometime can lead to full blue iris or increased inclusion of the eyes and blindness. Even though the blue eyes are beautiful we prefer to breed black or brown eyed single merle dogs to reduce the tendency for any health issues. As a merle breeder it is our responsibility to create health happy animals through preventive DNA tests and yearly OFA eye exams. Which, looks like someone had fun painting your dog and no two dogs have the same exact pattern. This rather exotic wild pattern comes in multiple color variations. The Merle gene creates multi-color patches in a solid coat and the dogs that carry merle gene can often have blue eyes. The labradoodles with Merle gene and color patches are called Merle Labradoodles. It is one of the most complicated gene but very fascinating. Merle Genetics Merle is actually a heterozygote of an incompletely dominant gene. To avoid these common health issues, knowledgeable and responsible labradoodle breeders mate a merle with a non-merle dog. In this way half the puppies will be merles, and none will have the vision or hearing defects associated with double merle dogs. So, when you adopt a Merle labradoodle puppy make sure to check with the breeder that one of the parents is a solid color only. The UK Kennel Club has acknowledged the health risk associated with homozygous merles and stopped registering puppies produced from merle to merle breeding in .Research indicates that the majority of health issues occur in dogs carrying both piebald and merle genes. Labradoodles who are homozygous for the merle pattern gene often have visual and auditory deficits. Ocular defects include microphthalmia, conditions causing increased ocular pressure, and colobomas, among others. Double merle labradoodles may be deaf or blind or both, and can carry ocular defects in blue or colored eyes. A study by German researchers found partial hearing loss in .Certified labradoodle breeders will only breed one merle with a non-merle to produce normal healthy merle labradoodle puppies. Select Page Merle Australian Labradoodles, what are they? There are many color variations in the merle coat, chocolate, red, blue, parti and phantom are some common colors we produce. The true Australian Labradoodle was designed in the s for the purpose of providing a service and therapy dog to families that suffer from illness or allergies. Combinations such as brindle, sable, phantom or parti merle colors also exist. In addition merle colored dogs have blue and green eye coloring. In the Labradoodles this gene has been brought into the Australian Labradoodle from the merle poodle and or the merle cocker spaniel. Post header Skip post header How much exercise does a French Bulldog need? French Bulldogs are one of the most popular small dog breeds and are known for their playful, adaptable, and affectionate nature, not to mention their big bat-like ears. How much exercise does an adult French Bulldog need? Around 60 minutes of daily exercise is plenty for these pooches. One way you can do this is by having multiple gentle walks daily with plenty of rest in between. PitPat will do it for you. How much exercise does a French Bulldog puppy need? Whilst they may seem like little balls of energy when it comes to walkies, they should be limited to around 5 minutes for each month of their age. So, for example, a four-month-old French Bulldog only needs 20 minutes of total walkies each day. This will help prevent overexercising them, which could cause joint and mobility issues in the long run. At this age, walkies should be spent exploring the world around them rather than a march around the block. Give them opportunities to do lots of sniffing, experience different types of places, and interact safely with new people and animals. As your French Bulldog edges closer to adolescence, the amount of exercise they need will increase. But by how much? Just download the PitPat app to get started. How much exercise does a senior French Bulldog need? As your dog gets older, the amount they need to walk will decrease. But again, by how much? Well, every dog is different, so let them set the pace. And if they look to be slowing down, it might be time to head home. Keep an eye on them, and if you notice them looking stiff, trailing behind, or struggling in any way, start reducing the length of their walks. Why not try some of these? Snuffle mats. May 5, French Bulldog puppies can be similar to babies when they are first born; they typically require much attention and care. At birth, puppies are blind and deaf and usually snuggle together to keep warm since they cannot regular their body temperature. If you have a French Bulldog or are looking to acquire one, you may be interested in what happens before taking one home. When French Bulldogs Are First Born When the puppies are born, breeders and shelters ensure they cry and breathe properly. Then a veterinarian does a complete examination to check for any abnormalities. The average birth weight of the puppies is anywhere between 10 to 18 ounces. For the first few weeks or so, Frenchie puppies sleep most of the time. Then, for just a little bit of time, they typically will nurse when they are awake and somewhat alert. Heat lamps or another external heat source are available if puppies are not in direct contact with their mother. Whoever is watching over the French Bulldog puppies usually has a busy time assisting mothers every few hours and tending to make sure the puppies are latching and growing and being stimulated to go to the bathroom. Keeping a close watch on the puppies this way is because they are so tiny. The Frenchie mom could accidentally smother one, unaware, so they need to be looked after. French Bulldogs 10 Days to Two Weeks Old When the puppies are around ten days, they still sleep very often, but finally, they start to open their eyes and do some exploring. Being around the other dogs from the litter aids in socialization. When they reach a full two weeks old, their ears open, and they can hear. They cannot walk yet; their primary method of moving is crawling, similar to an army crawl. With exploring and hearing sounds, the world is opening up more for them, so they can begin venturing into new places and spaces. They also graduate from making only small whimpers to yelps, whines, and barks. But you will find that soon enough, their legs will stop being shaky, and they will move right along and walk with ease. They may also stop nursing at this age, though some Frenchies may continue to nurse until closer to six weeks of age. After that, their teeth begin to grow out and become more active and playful. They are also only strictly handled by a few people who do proper sanitizing. The puppies can chew on dry puppy food and build out their nutrition at four weeks old and start trotting and running. They can be handled by people with clean hands and have more freedom to explore inside. French Bulldog Puppies Five Weeks to Seven Weeks Old By the time French Bulldog puppies get to five weeks old, they can start exploring outside with less supervision and have increased playtime with their siblings. Their teeth also become more prominent, and they begin to chew a lot including on fingers, so be careful — those teeth are sharp! At six weeks, they have even more energy and enjoy playtime and a little more less sleep time. They are reaching more milestones, including growth at around 5 pounds. They also get another thorough veterinarian examination where they will receive vaccinations, which they receive again around nine weeks of age. It is an exciting endeavor to get a new puppy into the house, but also crucial to remember to puppy-proof things that the dog may chew or not leave out anything that the puppy could get into that poses a danger or hazard. They do sleep a lot, but French Bulldogs have a lot of energy that they want to burn off when they are awake. Understanding growth stages and how much exercise to give your Frenchie from puppy to adult dog is helpful for longevity. French bulldogs are prone to medical issues as they age, but ensuring exercise will help reduce their chances and prevent problems from occurring too soon. Socialization — Frenchies, like most dogs, need socialization to adapt to new situations and places and be more well-adjusted. So, taking your dog for frequent walks where it can explore other people and animals is helpful. Dogs who can coexist in harmony tend to be happier and friendlier and have less tendency to suffer from depression. Behavior and Training — walking your French Bulldog helps establish boundaries so that you can train them to be more obedient and follow your lead. It allows for bonding and building a connection with your puppy, and you can reinforce good behaviors when out walking together. Stimulation — Frenchies are prone to separation anxiety if left alone indoors and without exercise. Please keep your dog mentally active and give it more attention by walking it frequently in a routine. Walks of around 20 to 30 minutes should suffice and give your pet the ability to explore, socialize, and be stimulated. Consider breaking up the time and walking your Frenchie a couple of times each day, or having one of those times centered around play, to ensure that your French Bulldog is getting all of their walkings in and using that energy. As French Bulldog puppies start discovering their abilities to move around and be alert to their surroundings, they become more in need of walking and forms of stimulation. Prepare for the weather outside when you take your puppy for walks. As your Frenchie ages, walks may be cut shorter depending on how your dog is feeling. However, be sure not to overexert if you sense it needs a break, and take them as often as necessary. Every French Bulldog needs to walk and be active for good health and a long, happy life with its owner. Share on facebook. While healthy Frenchie adult generally require 15 to 20 minutes of brisk walks every day, the case is different for French bulldog pups. Daily walks are not a necessity and are not even recommended for puppies because their bones, muscle and joints are still in development as opposed to that of the adults. In fact, waking your Frenchie puppy daily may result in complications and harm rather than making them healthier. The best way of exercising a French bulldog puppy is to give it free reins in playing as much as possible with toys suitable for his age. Socialization is another form of exercise for pups because it is an excellent way of expending that puppy energy while becoming socially acquainted with other people, pets and places and also learning new social skills. The older your Frenchie gets, the more their needs for actual physical exercise increases. If you do need to walk your Frenchie pup, the maximum amount of time for a puppy is around 2 minutes for every month of age. So, for instance, if your pup is 3 months old, the walking time will be 3 month multiplied by 2 minutes and that will of course be 6 minutes of exercise. When walking your pup, ensure you look out for signs of fatigue and exhaustion such as panting, lagging behind, etc. Although French Bulldogs are generally low energy and are happy with apartment living, they need exercise just like the rest of us. Making sure your dog gets exercise at least once a day is recommended. Whether that be a trip to the dog park or a walk around the block. One of the many bonuses to having a Frenchie is that you can do this without carving out too much time during the day. Short walks and playtime at home provide the perfect amount of exercise for them without running the risk of overworking your dog. There are a lot of different activities to meet the interests of your dog and get them moving. Frenchies are known to be smart and social, so consider providing them with physical activity that can appeal to both of these qualities. It can also be nice to take your dog to a local dog park where they can interact and socialize with other dogs. Overall, it is recommended that Frenchies walk for about minutes per day at a minimum. One easy inside activity is to use house-friendly toys to get your Frenchie moving. This could be a good old fashioned tennis ball or a toy that your Frenchie naturally gravitates to. Then, train your dog to respond to another word to come and find you. You might be more successful with this activity with a treat, but overtime they will want to find you even without the treat. As with any dog, Frenchies can be over-exercised. However, Frenchies are at particular risk because they are a brachycephalic breed with a flatter face and shorter nose that makes it difficult for them to regulate their body temperature. The best way to determine the amount of exercise you should be providing your dog is to be particularly observant of when they tire during physical activity. Whether you just added a Frenchie puppy to your family or have had one as a companion for many years, it is important to know that Frenchies are prone to being overworked more easily. Overworking puppies and older dogs puts them at greater risk for joint problems and heat exhaustion. In addition, because older Frenchies have given so much love over their lives, their heart might not be as efficient as it once was and may render them more tired when exercising. Thankfully, Frenchies are pretty smart when it comes to this kind of thing. Whilst they can become over-excited at times, they will typically stop exercising and try to cool themselves down if they need to. You might also consider having play time in an air-conditioned place during the summer months. Always make sure to bring water and have shade readily available when you are walking your dog outside. The first signs of heat exhaustion usually consist of increased panting and foamy saliva. Although Frenchies are generally calm, puppies can be nippy especially when they are excited or around new people or dogs and environments. Although this behavior usually decreases with age, it is important to socialize your dog with other dogs, people, and environments at an early age to prevent this hyperactive behavior and allow your dog to lead an active lifestyle. Tips for walking a french bulldog To make walking fun and easy for both you and your French bulldog, here are 3 helpful tips. Use a Harness when walking For brachycephalic dog breeds like the French bulldog, it is recommended to use a harness rather than a collar when walking them. This is to prevent their restricted air passages from causing complications while you are walking them. Exercise in the early mornings and evening This is especially important during the hot climate. Again, this is because the French bulldog is a brachycephalic breed and is prone to overheating. Take your dog out for a walk in the mornings and evenings when the weather is cooler. Walk them with treats To make walking fun and also keep your dog by your side, you can consider walking them with quality treats. This should serve as a lure to keep your pup from pulling on its harness and staying by your side while walking. These include joints limber, maintains muscle mass, prevent obesity and generally keep your dog happy and healthy. So, how do you know when you are over-exercising your Frenchie? Worn-out Paw Pads Paw pad injury is common in French bulldogs when they are being over-exercised. However, it gets even worse when your dog has a blistered paw. Over-exercised pads always have tears present. Sore Muscles Pain in the muscles is another sign that your Frenchie is being overworked by you. One way of detecting muscular pains in your dog is to observe whether it struggles to pick itself up after resting from the exercise. Your dog may also avoid walking up and down the stairs because it is in so much pain. Overheating Heatstroke is a very common problem in French bulldogs because of their inability to regulate their body temperature. Behavioral Changes The most obvious signs of over-exercising which any caring dog owner should detect at once is changes in behaviors of the dog. For instance, if your Frenchie normally enjoys walking with you but suddenly starts to shy away from any form of walking, you may want to pay a visit to your vet to find out why your dog is refusing exercise. Powered by GoDaddy Website Builder. So young French Bulldogs usually have a slower walking pace. Past a certain age, dogs will gradually decrease in health and physical conditions. So a senior French Bulldog can walk less and less far as he loses stamina and speed. Old dogs are also more prone to joint problems that could restrict them from walking long distances, such as arthritis and hip or elbow dysplasia. So a senior Frenchie can probably walk between 30 and 45 minutes per day at a slower pace, which means about 3 km or 2 miles. Since older dogs are more fragile and less athletic, you should ideally divide it into two or three short walks throughout the day. French Bulldogs are prone to respiratory and mobility problems that could restrict them from walking long distances. French Bulldogs in perfect health should be able to walk for around 5 km 3 miles or even more. But some of them with special conditions might not be able to go that far. In general, the healthier a dog is, the longer he can walk. Fitness Level Some Frenchies are in better shape than others. The more stamina, endurance, and strength a dog has, the farther he can walk. Although walking is a moderate physical activity, it still requires good physical conditions. Some French Bulldogs are more energetic than others. And the more energy they have, the longer they can walk. So if your dog is active and never seems tired, he can probably walk 5 km 3 miles or more. On the other hand, a lethargic and lazy Frenchie can probably not go that far. But keep in mind that it can vary according to the time. Your French Bulldog might have more energy in the morning or less after an intense effort. Walking Speed How fast a dog walks will also influence how far he can go. A French Bulldog can generally walk for up to an hour per day. But some dogs are faster than others and will be able to go farther because of that. On the other hand, the more speed, the more energy is generally spent. So it tends to balance out at a distance of about 5 km 3 miles per day. Weather Another element to consider is the temperature and weather. And in the winter, it might just be too cold, snowy, or icy to walk. So the weather and extreme temperatures can influence how far your Frenchie can walk. Walking about 2 km 1 mile two or three times per day would be ideal. I recommend at least one walk in the morning of about 2 or 3 km 1 or 2 miles and another shorter one in the afternoon of around 1 or 2 km 1 mile. Finally, most French Bulldogs can walk around 5 km 3 miles per day. But some might be able to go more or less far depending on their health, age, fitness, and other conditions. Also, keep in mind to start slowly and gradually increase the distance. Dogs need time to develop their muscles and build stamina before walking long distances. And make sure to give your Frenchie as much water, breaks, and rest as needed. You can also run, play games, or do any other physical activity. Learn more about the exercise needs of a French Bulldog. I am now a big walker so can happily advise new owners on how much walking French Bulldogs need, the distance you can walk them, how often, how long, and also the walking requirements for puppies — which is very different to adult Frenchies. Do French Bulldogs need walking? There are many misconceptions over the Frenchie breed. In fact, I recall when we were first considering getting a French Bulldog, we were told that they were lazy , sedentary, and required very little exercise. The bottom line is that all dogs need to be walked. Claude loves his walks in the forest and on our local beaches. French Bulldogs need to be walked because… Exercise and health: Overweight French Bulldogs will suffer with breathing problems, possible diabetes, and damage to their hips and joints. Frenchies are already prone to a wide range of medical problems , but walking them often can reduce their chances of an early death related to weight gain. Natural instinct: Walking fulfils their natural instinct that harks back to their pack mentality of getting up in the morning and walking from their home to find food. Socialization: Walking lets your Frenchie socialize with other dogs, other people and adapt to unique situations so they can grow up to be well adjusted dogs. This will make them far happier and less inclined to exhibit depression. Training and behavior: Walking your Frenchie lets you train them, practice obedience skills, and reinforce your own relationship with him. I hope that convinces you; all Frenchies need to be walked. But exactly how often and how far should their walk lengths be? How much walking do French Bulldogs need? Adult: 30 to 45 minutes. Older Frenchies: Dependent on health. Please Note: The above walking times do not mean my Frenchie is walking constantly for these minutes. This is just the amount of time we are out of the house so will include walking, stopping, playing, pooping, and sniffing around. He will not be constantly on the move. The times above are based on my own experience of owning this breed, and how much time Claude would need walking before he became an adult. Your Frenchie might be different and may not be able cope with this amount of long walking time — alternatively he might demand more. Be careful though; Frenchies are a brachycephalic breed so you should avoid walking them in hot weather or letting them run continuously for more than 5 minutes; they can quickly overheat and have breathing difficulties. Be careful walking your Frenchie in the sun as they can quickly overheat. However, how often you walk your French Bulldog will boil down a number of factors; Age: The older they get, the less they will need or be able to walk. Health: Frenchies are prone to health problems, some of which limit walking. Character: All dogs are different, and some could be less active than others. Again, this is all down to my own personal experiences of walking our own Frenchie… How far should you walk a French Bulldog? An adult French Bulldog walk length can be as far as 3 miles. I walk my own Frenchie this far and this long many mornings through our local forest providing its not too hot. He then demands a further afternoon walk of around 1. At the very least, our Frenchie is getting 3 miles a day in walks. Can French Bulldogs go for long walks? This depends on how you define a long walk. However, how long can you walk a French Bulldog should be treated with caution. Can you walk a French Bulldog too much? Yes, you can walk a French Bulldog too much, and it can be dangerous. I have got personal experience of why this is so important due to an incident when Claude was younger. My family I went for a walk in our local forest when the sun was behind clouds. As we turned back to walk the 1. It was cloudy at first but then the sun came out and Claude got very overheated on his walk. Within 10 minutes Claude was totally exhausted due to the heat. I had to leave him with my wife and run back to the car, and then drive back to get them. Never will we make this mistake again, it actually very scary. Handy Hint: Read my guide on how to tell if your Frenchie is overweight with tips on how to help them with a weight loss diet. The morale of the story is you need to keep an eye on the weather. Frenchies can easily overheat, and when they do, you need to take steps to cool them down. Signs of over-exertion Here are the signs that you have over-exerted your Frenchie with too much walking, either distance and time related, or to do with the heat: Heavy, continuous panting. Exercise and health: Overweight French Bulldogs will experience breathing difficulties, diabetes, and hip and joint damage. French bulldogs are already prone to a number of medical issues, but walking them on a regular basis can help to reduce their risk of dying prematurely due to weight gain. Mental stimulation: Indoor dogs who do not get the exercise they require will become mentally unstable. Natural instinct: Walking your dog allows them to release built-up energy, which will keep your Frenchie active and allow them to run around as they would in the wild. Socialization: Walking develops a healthy sociability in your Frenchie, allowing them to socialize with other dogs, people, and adapt to different circumstances so that they may grow into well-adjusted pets. This will make your puppy or adult dog much more content and less prone to depression. Training and behavior: Walking your Frenchie allows you to train them, practice obedience skills, and reaffirm your own connection with them. Dogs who are walked on a regular basis are generally better behaved all round. Overexerting your Frenchie can cause a number of health problems that you will want to avoid. French Bulldogs are prone to several different medical issues, and their respiratory system is not made for extended periods of running and strenuous activity. Take your French bulldog for a walk using a harness rather than a collar. A harness, on the other hand, provides excellent support for the dog — and if they begin running and pulling on the leash, it is less stressful. Morning and evening walks are ideal for this breed. Because of their tiny noses and restricted airways, French Bulldogs have a hard time breathing when they exercise. Overdoing any sort of activity that raises the need for oxygen is not a good idea. Frenchies have a harder time keeping their body temperature steady, so you should always walk them during the cooler hours of the day which can be 5am in the summer and 11pm at night. In heat and humidity, avoid taking your French bulldog for a walk. Heat exhaustion may be recognized by increased panting and foamy saliva, which are the first indicators. Always bring water and find shade when walking your dog outdoors if you do go out during the day. During the summer months, you might want to play in an air-conditioned location instead. Before meals is the ideal time to exercise your French bulldog. When their stomach is full, French bulldogs tend to become drowsy and wish to simply lie around. Whilst they may seem like little balls of energy when it comes to walkies they should be limited to around 3 minutes for each month of their age. Snuffle mats, Kongs, Food puzzles, Lickimats and Interactive toys are great choices to keep your Frenchie occupied. How can I monitor my French Bulldogs activity level? How much exercise should Frenchies get? Do French Bulldogs Need Exercise? What is the best way to walk Frenchies? You can walk with your adult French Bulldog every day. In fact, even an elderly French Bulldog can be taken out for a walk every day but at a slower pace and at a shorter distance. What about sick French Bulldogs? Because in some cases, even a short walk can exacerbate their medical conditions. Every Frenchie is unique and each have its own needs in terms of how much they need to be exercised. Typically, it is recommended that they be taken for 2 to 3 several short walks throughout the day so as not to overexert them. Whether you walk your Frenchie with a harness or a French Bulldog leash, there are several factors to consider on how often you should walk your pooch. Age French Bulldog puppies and seniors have different exercise needs compared to regular adult Frenchie due to their limitations and health condition. Fitness Level The stamina and endurance vary from each individual Frenchie and some can have a faster walking pace than others. Health Each French Bulldog have their own health issues that can limit how often they can be walked. Energy Level Some Frenchies are lively and active, while some may be more lethargic or lazy. Weather Condition Frenchies have short muzzles, which make it difficult for them to adequately cool or warm their bodies, making them vulnerable to extreme heat and cold. You can have a fun walk with your puppy every day. Yes, French Bulldogs are inquisitive dogs that love to explore the outdoors. French Bulldog puppy walking outside of your home can begin 10 days after her final set of core vaccinations. That should be around 4 months of age or thereabouts. Below is an example of how long and fast can a French Bulldog walk by age: 4 month old: 0. When my Frenchie was still a 4-month-old puppy, I walked her around the neighborhood for a period of 12 minutes but I divided it into 2 walking sessions. I recommend that you do the same because walking is also the best time to train your puppy how to be comfortable wearing a harness. As she developed her stamina, I gradually increased the time to an additional 3 minutes per month. An adult French Bulldog ideally needs 30 to 45 minutes of exercise daily. The amount of walking time they need really depends on how much exercise they are already getting from other activities. To prevent overexertion, I would often take my Frenchie for 2 walks every day — once in the morning before breakfast and another one in the late afternoon. Both times are ideal for walking for the outside temperature is not too high, especially during the summer. Select the appropriate French Bulldog Leash. The Frenchies can benefit from a soft leash because this does not strain their necks and reduces pressure on their tracheas. Use a harness and not a neck collar because it reduces injuries caused by pulling. Keep the walking session short to avoid overexertion. French Bulldogs are sensitive to extreme temperatures. The best time to walk them is at the break of dawn or late afternoon. Take water breaks in between. Stick to a routine to bring down anxiety levels. Give nice treats after your walk. How far a French Bulldog can walk really depends on their overall health and ability. Some can only tolerate short distances while others can go for more than 3 miles per day. The main goal in taking your Frenchie for a walk is to improve his physical and mental health. But also to provide exposure to the world around him with an awareness of his limitations. Here are five signs to look for when searching for a breeder. Look for a breeder that breeds only one specific kind of mix—like the Labradoodle. Choose a breeder who is unwilling to meet or speak with you about their dogs. They should be eager to answer your questions over the phone and via email. Check out each dog yourself before leaving with a pup. Avoid breeders who keep their dogs in cages or kennels. Dogs kept in these conditions can become neurotic and destructive. Beware of breeders who offer puppies at a very low price. This could signify that the breeder is not breeding for quality but profit. Life Span Did You Know? The Victorian Bulldog is a cousin to the English Bulldog. Victorian Bulldogs are slightly larger, tend to be a little bit lighter in the chest, and have a slightly longer snout. Victorian Bulldogs might look a little intimidating, but they are loyal and reliable sweethearts with a gentle nature that make a great family companion. They are very affectionate and thrive on human attention and companionship. They are excellent guard dogs that are known for their courage and protective instincts. They are also great with children and other pets and are naturally gentle with them. They can be suspicious of other dogs if they are not socialized properly. This dog breed may drool a little and snore, but they are a loving and dedicated companion that will love spending time with you. The Victorian Bulldog is a moderately adaptable dog breed. They do well in larger homes and can also adapt well to apartment living as long as they get enough attention and exercise. They tend to be less active indoors, which makes them a good fit for apartment dwellers. They do best in moderate climates as they get cold easily and do not handle heat very well. Victorian Bulldogs also crave human companionship and attention, so they will not do well with long periods of time alone. This is a hardy dog breed that is relatively healthy. Although they are bred specifically to avoid many of the genetic diseases common to Bulldogs, there are some conditions to be aware of including skin problems, cherry eye, entropion, or hip and elbow dysplasia. Asking the breeder about the genetic history of the parents and also to see any health clearances can help allay concerns about potential health issues. The Victorian Bulldog is sensitive, intelligent, and eager to please. They tend to pick up training quickly and relate well to their humans. This makes them a highly trainable dog breed and a good fit for owners of any experience level. They respond best to gentle, positive, and rewards-based training. This dog breed has a moderate grooming level and is an average shedder. Common coat colors are red, brindle, fawn, solid white, or pied. They have a shorthaired coat of fine, smooth fur that requires minimal grooming. Bulldogs are known for their wrinkly faces, which need to be cleaned regularly to avoid irritated skin or infections. Gently cleaning inside the wrinkles each day with a damp cloth will help keep your Victorian Bulldog comfortable and prevent skin problems. In addition to coat and skin care, there are other grooming tasks that every dog needs, like nail trimming, regular ear checks, and dental care. Monthly nail trimming is usually sufficient to keep nails from getting too long. Ears that flop over can trap dirt, debris, and moisture, which can lead to ear infections. Dental disease is one of the most common health issues in dogs. Dental hygiene chews and a dental care diet can help supplement your dental care efforts. Getting them used to regular grooming tasks and keeping it a positive experience makes grooming much easier as your dog grows. It can even become a bonding experience that calms and relaxed both of you! Victorian Bulldogs have a moderate activity level. They can sometimes act like couch potatoes when they are indoors, but they still need some regular exercise every day to stay happy and healthy. A few walks a day with some playtime or time to run around is sufficient for this stocky pup. Although they are more athletic than their English Bulldog cousins, they still have a short snout, so they can get overheated easily. A fully-grown Victorian Bulldog usually stands between inches tall at the shoulders and weighs between pounds. A Victorian Bulldog generally lives years. The Victorian Bulldog was bred to recreate the appearance of the Bulldog breed from the early 19th century, so it looks more like the Bulldogs from years ago than those of today. Ken Mollet used breeds recognized by the Kennel Clubs and Healthy dogs developed by prominent dog breeders. He used Bullmastiffs, Staffords and Dogue de Bordeaux in his bid to accomplish this mission and used any source he could obtain the perfect idea of how the bulldogs looked like in Victorian times. In , Ken formed the Victorian Bulldog society. Today, many dog breeds are similar to it. However, its distinct attributes still make it distinguishable. It requires a small yard for movement, a large apartment will also suffice. It is not an energetic dog. However, it needs moderate exercise and mental stimulation every day. charcoal silver labrador puppies - Meet Uncle Jesse! This stunningly handsome German Shepherd found himself in an overcrowded shelter in TX, through no fault of his own. Uncle Jesse is a senior boy, who should never have been dumped at all, let alone for being older. And he only has one eye, why do you need two anyway?!! Who wants an old guy with one eye, right?!! So of course, he was put on the euthanasia list.We could not let that happen to him. Our rescue saved this senior boy minutes from being euthanised in order to free up kennel space. With a shortage of fosters, due to the immense overcrowding in southern shelters, we had to put him in temporary boarding to save his life. He is in a loving foster home just now but it's a busy house, with too many people, kids, dogs etc, he isn't getting the peace, quiet, and attention he really needs. This precious guy just needs to live in a warm, loving home, with grass to romp around in from time to time, to feel the sun on his face and watch all nature around him. And of course, in true GSD style, to be with his people. Uncle Jesse is fine with other dogs but we feel at this time in his life, he deserves to have all the attention in a home. Unless there's another older quiet pup whom he could snuggle with if he so desires.
