The coat can be brushed with a bristle brush once in a week, this will help to distribute oils and get rid of dead cells on the skin. The teeth need to be brushed at least thrice a week. Just like most dog breeds, the socialization training of American Bulldogs should start very early. If they are properly trained, they do well with children and they remain loyal to all the family members of that home. This dog breed is large and much energetic play could lead to some injuries. This also links to their interaction with other pets. To help ensure a successful natural birth, it is important to prepare with the right breeding practices, as well as to be aware of the signs of labor and when to seek help. With this knowledge and the right guidance, you can look forward to the miracle of French Bulldog maternity. What is a French Bulldog? A French Bulldog is a small, compact breed of dog with distinctive bat-like ears and a wrinkly face. They have a stocky body and a short, smooth coat that comes in a variety of colors. French Bulldogs are friendly, playful, and intelligent and make excellent family pets. They require minimal exercise and grooming and they are quite adaptable to living in an apartment or house. If you are considering getting a French Bulldog, it is important to be aware that they can have difficulty giving birth naturally. This is due to their short and wide heads, which can make for a difficult delivery for both the mother and the puppies. With proper preparation, French Bulldogs can give birth naturally and the whole process can be a miraculous experience. It is essential to seek out a veterinarian who is experienced in naturally delivering French Bulldogs in order to ensure a successful and safe delivery. French Bulldogs can have difficulties with natural births because of their unique body shape and the size of their litters. The narrow pelvis of a French Bulldog makes it hard for them to give birth naturally, as the puppies may be too big to pass through the birth canal. French Bulldogs tend to have larger litters, which can put a strain on the mother as she is trying to give birth. The larger the litter, the greater the chances of a natural birth being complicated. French Bulldog breeders should consider reducing litter sizes to decrease the risk of complications. Make sure your dog is healthy before breeding and that they are receiving regular veterinary check-ups. Make sure to monitor the mother throughout the pregnancy and be prepared to provide assistance during delivery if needed. By following these steps, you can help ensure a successful natural birth. But with the right preparation, owners can help make the process a lot smoother for both mom and pup. This can help reduce the chances of complications during labor. French Bulldogs can give birth to puppies naturally, although it can be a challenging process for the mother due to their physical structure. The first step is to ensure that the mother Frenchie is healthy and receiving proper nutrition leading up to the birth. You should also make sure to research the best breeding practices for French Bulldogs to increase the chances of a successful birth. If the mother is having difficulty, you may need to provide assistance to ensure a safe and successful natural birth. As long as the mother is healthy and receives proper care leading up to the birth, French Bulldogs can give birth naturally. With the right preparation and understanding of the process, the miracle of Frenchie maternity can be a beautiful, safe experience for the mother and puppies. While natural childbirth can be an empowering experience for both mother and pups, it comes with possible complications. First and foremost, the mother must be in good health, both physically and mentally. Before breeding and during pregnancy, the mother should be monitored closely to ensure she is healthy and capable of giving birth naturally. Natural birth can become difficult or even impossible if the pups are too big to pass easily through the birth canal. Another thing to consider when preparing for a natural French Bulldog birth is the environment. Make sure that both the mother and pups are in a warm, safe place with minimal distractions when giving birth. A quiet, secure den should be prepared for the mother and pups prior to giving birth. The bedding should be soft and comfortable for the mother to rest between contractions, and it should be easy to clean after the birth. The mother should be given as much time as necessary to give birth. She should not be rushed or forced into labor. If the birth is taking longer than expected, the mother should be monitored closely to ensure that she and the pups are safe. If any potential risks are identified, a veterinarian should be consulted to provide medical advice. Find Out Now! To ensure that the process goes as smoothly as possible, stay informed on the potential risks and ensure that the breeder practices high standards of health and care. The Frenchie should also be examined by a vet to ensure that they are in good health and can handle the birthing process. Possible Breeding Practices When considering a French Bulldog breeding, it is important to speak with a veterinarian and carefully consider the risks and complications that can arise with natural birth. It is important to carefully select the right male and female French Bulldogs for the breeding, looking for healthy animals with good genetics. Proper nutrition and health care throughout the pregnancy will help prepare your Frenchie for birth. It is also worth discussing the possibility of a Cesarean section with your vet if the birth appears to be difficult. Before a natural birth is attempted, make sure that the mother is in good physical health. Ensure that the mother is up to date on all of her vaccinations and has received a clean bill of health from the vet. It is also important to ensure that she is at an acceptable weight and does not have any serious health problems. It is also important to consider the number of puppies in the litter. A French Bulldog should not have more than four puppies in a litter. Having too many puppies can be dangerous for the mother and may even result in death, so it is important to make sure that the number of puppies is manageable. It is important to provide your Frenchie with a comfortable environment during labor. This should include a temperature-controlled area with plenty of bedding and a good diet throughout her pregnancy. Her temperature may drop, her nesting behaviours will increase, she might appear anxious or restless, and she will start producing a mucous plug. She may have more frequent trips to the litter box and appear uncomfortable in her abdomen. These are all clear signs that labor is coming soon. It is important to be prepared for labor, particularly if you are planning on assisting in the delivery. Make sure to have your vet on speed dial, or be prepared to take your Frenchie to the vet, depending on how her labor progresses. You should also ensure that the area your Frenchie will delivery in is comfortable, warm and clean. Have a few towels and a heating pad nearby to help with the process. This can help the vet determine if a C-section will be necessary and can also help them identify any potential issues that could arise during the delivery. If you have a pregnant dog, it is essential to learn everything about the birthing process. However, this beautiful breed is more likely to suffer complications while giving birth than other dogs. Are you preparing to help your Frenchie during the birthing process? If yes, below is everything you need to know about Frenchies and giving birth. Yes, French Bulldogs can give birth naturally, but a natural birthing process is rare for this breed of dogs. Natural birth for pregnant Fnrechies is risky, with frequent complications like puppies getting stuck in the birth canal. Research by the Royal Veterinary College shows that female French Bulldogs are more likely to have a difficult birth and require cesarean surgery to have puppies. A few characteristics make a completely natural birth for Frenchies impossible. This term refers to dogs prone to difficult breathing because of their head shape, short muzzles, and throat. This trait makes a c-section the only safe and viable option for French Bulldogs when whelping. Pelvic Abnormalities The second reason Frenchies cannot give birth naturally is their pelvic abnormalities. Aside from their head shape being too big, Frenchies also have a small pelvis. Without the proper expansion, it is more painful and strenuous for a french bulldog to give birth naturally. The lack of canal expansion also increases the risk of fatalities while whelping. Breeding With plenty of breeding information about French Bulldogs, it is clear this breed came about primarily because of human interference. Not only is giving birth naturally for French Bulldogs difficult, so is getting pregnant. French Bulldog studs are mostly infertile due to low sperm count, which means female dogs need insemination to conceive. If you have a French Bulldog and are considering breeding, you should know that it is not easy, especially for amateur breeders. Breeding through insemination requires a lot of work and is expensive. Humans still breed Frenchies, knowing their bodies are too small to handle safe natural delivery. Possible Complications With Natural Births The chances of your Frenchie having a difficult birth is higher than other dogs. There are various conditions breeders, and dog owners should consider before delivering Frenchie puppies naturally. These include: Puppy Getting Stuck: the worst thing to happen when a Frenchie is whelping is for the puppy to get stuck on its way out into the world. Anasarca refers to extreme swelling right before giving birth and is common in Frenchies. Frenchies are more likely to suffer from Anasarca when giving birth due to their small body proportions. A belly full of puppies can cause breathing problems due to their small size. Dystocia: This condition is similar to when the puppy gets stuck, and a vet needs to help get it out. Dystocia is a complication that requires a vet or someone with experience whelping puppies to ensure safe delivery. It is much safer. Natural birth can endanger the lives of the mother and her puppies. When it comes to Frenchies giving birth, a C-section has many more benefits. If you are planning to go the c-section route, there is a lot you need to do, from scheduling the c-section to having your vet on speed dial in case of emergencies. Aside from assurance from the veterinarian of a safe birth, here are other reasons why you should consider a c-section for your Frenchie: Safe delivery: One thing you can be sure of is that your Frenchie will safely deliver her pups through a c-section. Despite some risks during surgery, this is a safer alternative for breeders to prevent stillbirths or abortions. With a vet checking up on your Frenchie, you can help prevent infections as well. Frenchies Uterus stays strong: Labour for French Bulldogs is stressful to their mind and body. Giving birth to a litter of puppies not only risks their health but can also prevent them from having a healthy pregnancy later on in her life. Less stress: Frenchies can undergo excessive stress while giving birth naturally. Pregnancy is already tricky for French Bulldogs because of their small body. If she naturally gives birth to two or more puppies, Her body and mind will be weak and exhausted after the delivery process. The stress on her body can mean longer after-care for the mum and possible health complications, not to mention caring for her newborn puppies. Risks With C-sections The C-section process for French Bulldogs involves prepping your Frenchie for surgery by putting her under anaesthesia because it is an invasive surgery. Although a c-section is a safer option for pregnant French Bulldogs, it also has its risks. Breathing Problems: Frenchies are prone to breathing problems because they are brachycephalic. Most dogs are put under anaesthesia while undergoing surgery which, combined with their flat face, can cause breathing issues. Breathing issues are why they need plenty of oxygen while under anaesthesia. Even experienced vets have a hard time knowing how much oxygen they are getting because they can no longer breathe on their own. Choking on Vomit: This is a common problem when a Frenchie gives birth. It is even worse with a brachycephalic dog breed like a French Bulldog that suffers from breathing problems. Unlike other dogs, Frenchies can choke on their vomit. A vet needs to step in to prevent choking, which can be fatal. First and foremost, make sure you have your vet on speed dial. Here are some telltale signs to look out for that could mean your French Bulldog is going into labour: Frenchies exhibit nesting behaviour by looking for a safe place to bring their pups into the world. It can start a week before the due date but occur more frequently on the day of or before delivery. Most pregnant dogs might stop eating days to the due date. Your Frenchie might also experience large bowel movements due to the pressure from the pups moving into position as they prepare for birth. Two consecutive drops in their body temperature most likely mean that labour will start within 24hours. Your Frenchie is shaking and trembling. Once the labour starts, your Frenchie will be trembling and lying down so that they can begin to push their pups out. After labour, you will need to clean the pups, cut their umbilical cords and clean the area where they gave birth. If the natural delivery is successful, you will have healthy French Bulldog puppies in your hands. With health risks like dystocia and the puppies getting stuck in the birth canal, it is usually much safer to schedule a c-section. Having a vet around for the whelping process ensures the safety of both your Frenchie and her pups, and while c-sections may expensive, they are often necessary to ensure the safety of your dog and her pups. In most cases, Frenchies will deliver by C-section, but there will be exceptions to that rule. Do French Bulldogs give birth naturally? There are risks with natural births including the puppies getting stuck in the birth canal. Consult with a veterinary professional for advice on natural births and labor. In this guide I am going to go into more detail on natural births, what the French Bulldog labor and delivery looks like, plus show you a video of a Frenchie delivering their puppies. This same physical trait is also one of the main reasons why natural births are so rare. French Bulldogs have narrow hips and large heads. This means puppies are at risk of getting stuck in the birth canal dystocia. This can lead to very difficult labor, with the possibility of death not just to the puppies, but also the mother. If you are thinking about breeding your Frenchie, please do consult with your vet. They will be able to give you advice on how likely it is that your French Bulldog can give breed and give birth naturally , and then create a pregnancy plan. It will be highly likely that they will recommend you get a C-section booked. Video of a French Bulldog giving birth naturally If you decide to opt for a natural labor you will find this video of a pregnant French bulldog giving birth really fascinating. The female Frenchie cleans the puppies straight after labor and then even plays with them after giving birth towards the end of the video. French bulldog labor signs Your Frenchie will act restless pacing around and digging Your Frenchie will want to start nesting. French bulldog labor temperature One of the most common signs of labor will be a drop in temperature. You can expect a drop of around one and a half degrees from .You will need a rectal thermometer to do this. Before labor you will see a lot of panting, walking around, and the restless behavior. Once labor starts, your Frenchie will shake and tremble, lie down, and then start to push. You will need to help clean the puppies, cut umbilical cords and then tie them up. You will also need to clean the area up with paper towels. After labor, your Frenchie will clean the puppies, and they should eventually start to feed from her. A healthy litter of Frenchies who are starting to feed from their mother a few weeks after labor. Do I recommend your French Bulldog giving birth naturally? I am not a breeder and I am not a vet. In fact, I have ethical questions myself over Frenchie breeding and how these dogs have developed over the years. According to the Royal Veterinary College view website Frenchies are almost 16 times likely to have a difficult pregnancy and natural birth than other dogs. As a result, French Bulldogs are 2. Many of these will have to be emergency operations when an owner opted for a natural French Bulldog birth. The potential health complications and risks are something that you should consider seriously. In addition to French Bulldogs, other pure breeds, such as Boston terriers , chihuahuas and pugs, are also at risk of suffering birthing problems. Compared to crossbred female dogs, Boston terriers are .All dogs are different and so the time it takes a Frenchie to give birth will vary drastically. Having spoken with our local vet, he said the majority of dogs will give birth from the point the puppies start to deliver between 20 minutes and a couple of hours. In the video of a French Bulldog birth I show on this page, the entire delivery took around 10 minutes. However, I would imagine this is quite a rare scenario given how difficult French Bulldog labor can be. Do I recommend you proceed with a natural birth? No, but then I am not a breeder myself, but can only go on the guidelines I have seen published by professional vets. There are many complications related to this process. Here in this blog, we will discuss in detail can French bulldog give birth naturally and what are the complications related to it. A French bulldog can give birth by a natural process, but it is very rare to see one do so. There are many issues and complications related to their birth process. The most common complication is prolapse. Cesarean section is a common surgical procedure opted for these dogs. It is considered to be the best option for French bulldog owners who have a complicated delivery or who are pregnant for the first time. Cesarean section is safe and effective, and it can provide your dog with the best possible health. French bulldogs are known for their impressive looks and strong personality. But there is another reason why these dogs are called man-made dogs. These dogs were bred specifically for humans and they cannot continue their life without human preference. The reason behind this is because of their body structure and their sensitive nature. French bulldogs are also sensitive during their pregnancy because they are bred to be working dogs. They are known for being very protective of their puppies, and during their early stages of development, they are especially vulnerable to physical and emotional stress. This can lead to problems for the dog during their pregnancy, including contractions that are difficult to control, difficulty breathing, and even premature delivery. Frenchie puppies are born through a very narrow birth canal. This can lead to complications such as long and painful labor. While some Frenchie puppies do well during delivery, others may get stuck and require help from a vet. What Are the Signs of French bulldog getting into Labor? When a dog is giving birth, there are many things you should know about it. This includes understanding the process of childbirth, knowing what to do if your dog is having difficulties, and being prepared for any possible problems. French bulldogs are notorious for giving birth with difficulty, but this behavior is not always indicative of labor. Some common signs that a French bulldog is in labor include changes in breathing patterns and a heightened sense of urgency. If you notice any of these behaviors, take your dog to the vet as soon as possible! Different complications occur during the natural process and you must know about them. Here are some common problems that you should be prepared for Anasarca Anasarca is a term used in French bulldogs to describe the swelling in the body just before giving birth. When a French bulldog is with puppies his body is big in terms of proportion and swelling makes it even bigger. When puppies are about to be born, they are filled with air and fluid. Swelling can form in these fluids and air. Some of the problems that can occur during birth with swelling include an increase in heart rate, breathing, and tiredness. This makes it difficult for the dog to eat and drink. Dystocia Dystocia is a condition in French bulldogs that can occur during delivery. It is a medical emergency that often results in the dog being born prematurely or with major defects. Dystocia can be caused by problems such as contractions too strong to be allowed to pass through the birth canal, prior pregnancy, or puppies whose physique is too much weight for the mother to carry. When puppies get stuck they usually require external effort from a vet. French bulldogs can give birth naturally and a c-section is not necessary. However natural birth is very dangerous for them and often leads to the death of moms and puppies. C section has many advantages and keeps both pups and mom healthy. C-section readiness is a vital step in the life of any dog. If your pup has not gone through a c-section before, it is important to have them checked out by a veterinarian. When a French bulldog goes through a c-section she needs a lot of time to recover. A Frenchie can go through a maximum of two to three c-sections in her life. If you want to keep the mom Frenchie in good health it would be best to pass one cycle and gives time to mom to recover. If your French bulldog recovers well from this process she will behave well in the next pregnancy. It will be really helpful if you give your Frenchie a nice comfy bed like house for Frenchie to take rest. A Frenchie can give birth to a maximum of 4 puppies in a litter. The number of puppies also affects the size of all puppies. If the size of a few puppies is large it will affect the development of other puppies. Conclusion There is not enough scientific evidence to support the claims that French bulldogs can give birth naturally, but there is enough anecdotal evidence to suggest that this may be possible. If you are thinking of getting a French bulldog pregnant, please do your research before that. A vet can give you the best advice for your pup. All things considered, French Bulldogs do often have trouble giving birth naturally. Purebred French Bulldogs are very specific and carefully bred, making them — essentially — a manmade dog breed. This is not a dog breed that ever could have existed without human interference. A fairly sensitive breed, French Bulldogs are commonly thought to have a lot of difficulties throughout pregnancy as well as in delivering puppies. Due to the physical anatomy, French Bulldogs have a narrow birth canal. This means that delivering puppies through this birth canal is very challenging, to begin with. The labor process for French Bulldogs is often long and, well, laborious. If your Frenchie does have a natural labor, you can settle in for a long day. Signs of labor to watch for include a decrease in temperature as well as obvious discomfort. This includes scratching or digging her nest and panting and general restlessness as her body readies itself to deliver. Possible complications giving birth naturally There are quite a few possible complications to know about when it comes to your French Bulldog doing so naturally. These are listed below for you to know and prepare for. Anasarca swelling require c-section This is especially common in Frenchies, which are small dogs in terms of their body proportions with a belly full of puppies! This is when there is a serious and severe swelling directly before giving birth. This can cause all sorts of complications with breathing and heart rate and also can be fatal to both mom and puppies. The puppy gets stuck Even just the sound of that is terrifying! But, a puppy getting stuck in a narrow birth canal is actually very common with French Bulldogs. This is happening if you not that she has been actively pushing for minutes with no obvious signs of delivery. Dystocia Similarly to getting stuck, this means that the puppy requires external support to help it gain access to the living world. This is typically a vet or someone experienced in births to help guide the puppy into the world safely. You should have a vet on-call or, even better, on-site to make sure everything goes smoothly. Do Frenchies have to have C sections? They are physically capable of giving birth naturally. That being said, natural birth is often dangerous and potentially fatal to both mom and pups. When it comes to French Bulldogs giving birth, a c-section has many advantages. Even if you get an ultrasound that says she has only 1 puppy, you may actually find out that you have 2 puppies. You guessed it. She effectively aborts her last puppy and this can lead to her much later passing a stillborn puppy at best, and dealing with a nasty and heartbreaking infection at worst. If you are planning on having her deliver later litters of puppies, you may find that giving birth to a litter naturally prevents her from becoming safely pregnant or having a healthy pregnancy later. Less stress on Mom Again, labor is very challenging on her body. If she pushes out 2 or 3 puppies, she is well past exhausted and can be severely weakened for a long time after delivering her puppies. This means that you will need to care for her puppies and deal with a potentially sick and struggling mama, too! Mom is anesthetized The first thing after she is prepped for surgery shaved around her tummy is to put her under anaesthesia. Her uterus is cut open and the vet removes the puppies A vet makes an incision in her uterus and beings to remove the puppies in their gestational sacs, leaving them intact if at all possible just like they would be in case of natural birth. The puppies are cleaned and stimulated Vet assistants will remove the gestational sacs and clean the puppies off. They then have to imitate a momma by carefully stimulating a puppy. This stimulation is required to get them to breathe and officially join the world of the living! The goal of a c-section, particularly with a potentially at-risk Frenchie more on that later , is to keep it as short as possible to minimize the time that she needs to be under the anaesthesia. Possible complications in a c-section Just like giving birth naturally, a cesarean section can also have its own complications that you should be aware of. While they are, of course, much less than natural birth and they are watched over by an experienced vet and their supplies, they are something to be aware of. Lack of oxygen As you may already know, French Bulldogs are brachycephalic. This flat face can lead them to breathing issues and this is no better exemplified than in a surgery where she is put under anaesthesia. Since oxygen is crucial for making sure that she can breathe while under she is no longer able to voluntarily do so , it can be challenging for even experienced vets to make sure she is getting enough oxygen. Choking on vomit Vomit is a common problem when a dog is under anaesthesia and with a dog who has breathing issues, this can be especially dangerous. They will often suffocate on their vomit much faster than an average dog, so stepping in and clearing it completely, immediately, is crucial. Conclusion There is a lot to know about French Bulldogs and giving birth. Whether you opt for a natural birth or for the safer c-section, this will help guide you in making the right choice for your Frenchie and her short- and long-term health. However, due to their physical traits, Frenchies often require artificial insemination and C-section deliveries. But did you know that it is possible for French bulldogs to give birth naturally? In this blog post, we will explore the process of natural birth for French bulldogs and what you need to know if you are considering breeding your Frenchie. Firstly, it is important to understand that while natural birth is possible for French bulldogs, it is not always recommended. Frenchies are a brachycephalic breed, meaning they have a shortened skull and flat face, which can lead to breathing difficulties and other health issues. Additionally, French bulldogs have a narrow pelvis, making it difficult for them to give birth naturally. This can result in a higher risk of complications such as dystocia, which is difficulty giving birth, and even death for both the mother and puppies. If you do decide to allow your Frenchie to give birth naturally, it is crucial to have a licensed veterinarian present to ensure the safety of both the mother and puppies. The vet will be able to monitor the progress of the delivery and intervene if necessary. The natural birthing process for French bulldogs is similar to other dog breeds. The gestation period for Frenchies is between 58 and 68 days, with an average pregnancy length of 63 days from conception to birth. As the due date approaches, you may notice your Frenchie becoming restless and seeking out a comfortable spot to give birth. During the delivery process, your Frenchie may experience contractions and begin to pant and push. It is essential to provide a quiet, warm, and comfortable environment for your Frenchie to give birth. You will also need to have clean towels or blankets on hand to help clean the newborn puppies. Once the puppies are born, it is crucial to ensure that they are breathing correctly and nursing from their mother. If you are considering breeding your Frenchie, it is crucial to work closely with a licensed veterinarian and carefully monitor the mother and puppies throughout the delivery process. It is always best to prioritize the health and safety of your furry friends. French Bulldogs have been selectively bred for their distinctive physical traits, including their short snouts and compact size. Unfortunately, these traits can also make it difficult for them to give birth naturally. Due to their narrow hips and large heads, many French Bulldogs are unable to deliver their puppies through the birth canal, which can result in serious health complications for both the mother and her offspring. As a result, many French Bulldogs require a cesarean section C-section in order to safely deliver their puppies. While not all French Bulldogs will require a C-section, it is a common procedure for this breed. Additionally, French Bulldogs are also often artificially inseminated due to the difficulty of natural mating. This can further increase the likelihood of a C-section being necessary. It is important to note that C-sections should only be performed by a licensed veterinarian and under appropriate medical conditions. While they can be life-saving for both mother and puppies, C-sections are a major surgical procedure that carries certain risks and should only be considered when necessary. French Bulldogs may require a C-section to safely deliver their puppies due to their physical characteristics. However, this should always be determined by a licensed veterinarian and should only be done when necessay to ensure the safety and well-being of the mother and her offspring. Source: youtube. However, they are also known for their susceptibility to certain health issues, including birthing problems. Dystocia, or difficult birth, is a common problem among French Bulldogs due to their unique physical characteristics. French Bulldogs have a relatively large head and a narrow pelvis, which can make it difficult for puppies to pass through the birth canal. Additionally, French Bulldogs are bred to have a short, stocky build, which can further complicate the birthing process. Symptoms of dystocia in French Bulldogs include prolonged labor, weak contractions, and the inability to deliver puppies. In severe cases, dystocia can lead to the death of the mother or the puppies. If you own a French Bulldog and are planning to breed them, it is important to work closely with a veterinarian to ensure a safe and successful pregnancy. Regular check-ups and ultrasounds can help detect any potential issues early on and allow for proper treatment. French Bulldogs do have a higher risk of birthing problems than other dog breeds due to their unique physical characteristics. It is important for owners to be aware of thee risks and work closely with a veterinarian to ensure a safe and successful pregnancy. On average, the pregnancy lasts about 63 days from conception to birth. Once the French bulldog goes into labor, the delivery process can take anywhere from a few hours to a full day. It is essential to monitor the dog closely during labor and delivery to ensure that everything goes smoothly. Unlike some other dog breeds, French bulldogs usually give birth naturally wihout any complications. During labor, French bulldogs may exhibit signs such as restlessness, panting, and pacing. The first puppy should be delivered within an hour of the onset of active labor. Subsequent puppies should be delivered every 30 to 60 minutes, but it is not uncommon for some puppies to take longer to be born. French bulldogs can give birth naturally, and with proper care and monitoring, the delivery process can be a smooth and successful one. French Bulldogs are a popular breed due to their affectionate, playful, and loyal nature. One of the main reasons why natural birth is risky for Frenchies is that they have a narrow birth canal. This can lead to dystocia, a condition where the puppies get stuck in the birth canal. When this happens, it can cuse distress to both the mother and her puppies, and it can even be life-threatening if not addressed quickly. Another issue with natural birth in French Bulldogs is that the puppies are often larger than the birth canal, making it difficult for them to pass through. This can result in the puppies becoming stuck and causing severe health complications for both the mother and her puppies. In contrast, c-sections provide a safer and more controlled environment for both the mother and her puppies. C-sections also reduce the risk of dystocia, making it a safer option for French Bulldogs. C-sections provide a safer and more controlled environment for both the mother and her puppies, ensuring a successful delivery. Breed of Dog That Cannot Give Birth Naturally Bulldogs are a breed of dog that cannot give birth naturally due to their physical characteristics. As a result, bulldog puppies must be delivered via cesarean section. The flattened faces and wrinkled skin that make bulldogs so recognizable also contribute to a host of other health problems, including breathing difficulties, eye infections, and skin irritations. Despite thse issues, bulldogs remain a beloved breed due to their affectionate personalities and loyal nature. Bulldogs are a breed of dog that cannot give birth naturally due to their physical characteristics, specifically their misshapen heads. This is a result of selective breeding practices that have prioritized appearance over health. Caring for a French Bulldog During Pregnancy and Birth French Bulldogs, like other dogs, are capable of giving birth on their own without the need for human intervention. Here are some things you can do: 1. Prepare a whelping box: A whelping box is a safe and comfortable place for your Frenchie to give birth. The box should be lined with clean towels or blankets that are easy to clean. Keep a close eye on your Frenchie: During labour, your Frenchie will exhibit signs such as panting, restlessness, and nesting behaviour. You should monitor her progress from a distance and only intervene if necessary. Provide support when needed: If your Frenchie seems to be struggling during labour, you can offer support by gently massaging her back or offering her water. Avoid touching or examining her too much as it can cause stress and delay the birthing process. Contact your vet if necessary: If you notice any signs of distress or complications during labour, contact your vet immediately. They can provide advice or come to your home to assist with the birth if necessary. Cost of C-Section for a French Bulldog A Cesarean section, or C-section, is a common procedure for female French Bulldogs due to teir narrow hips and large heads of puppies. This breed often encounters birthing difficulties, making C-sections a necessary and sometimes life-saving procedure for both the mother and her offspring. The cost of a French Bulldog C-section varies depending on several factors, such as location, veterinarian fees, and the complexity of the procedure. The cost of a C-section for a French Bulldog may also vary depending on the time of day or week that the procedure is scheduled, with after-hours or emergency surgeries typically costing more. Additionally, some veterinarians may require pre-surgery blood work or imaging, which can add to the overall cost. French bulldogs are known to be a popular breed of dogs that many people adore. If you are a French bulldog owner, you may be wondering how long it takes for your female Frenchie to give birth. The pregnancy of a French bulldog typically lasts about 63 days from conception to birth. However, it is important to note that the labor can occur a few days before or after the expected due date. In the first few weeks, you may notice that your Frenchie is more tired than usual and may experience some morning sickness. As your Frenchie gets closer to her due date, she will begin searching for a safe and calm place to nest. This is the time to prepare a whelping box for her to give birth in. It is recommended to set up the whelping box at least a week before the expected due date to give your Frenchie time to get used to it. When it is time for your Frenchie to give birth, it is essential to be attentive and povide her with the care she needs. The labor typically lasts between 2 to 4 hours, and you should be present to monitor the progress. If your Frenchie is taking too long to give birth or seems to be struggling, it is best to contact your veterinarian immediately. As a responsible owner, it is essential to provide your Frenchie with the necessary care and attention during the pregnancy and labor to ensure a safe and successful delivery. One of the most common questions that people ask abot Frenchies is how many puppies they usually have in a litter. On average, French Bulldogs will have 2 to 4 puppies in a litter. However, it is important to note that this number can vary depending on a few different factors. For example, the age and health of the mother dog can impact the size of the litter. Additionally, the size and health of the individual puppies can also play a role in the overall litter size. It is worth noting that most French Bulldog litters are delivered via C-section. While C-sections are generally safe for both the mother and the puppies, they do require extra care and attention during the recovery process. It is also worth mentioning that any litter larger than five puppies is considered extremely rare for French Bulldogs. French Bulldogs typically have 2 to 4 puppies in a litter, with larger litters being quite rare. However, breeding and raising a French Bulldog puppy litter can be quite expensive. The cost of a French Bulldog giving birth can vary depending on various factors such as the location, breeder, and the health of the mother dog. This cost covers various expenses such as pre-breeding health checks for the mother dog, veterinary care during pregnancy, delivery, and post-natal care for both the mother and the puppies. Breeding and raising a French Bulldog litter is a significant investment. However, it is essential to ensure the health and well-being of both the mother dog and her puppies. Therefore, it is crucial to consier all the costs involved before deciding to breed French Bulldogs. Conclusion French bulldogs are known for ther adorable physical traits, but unfortunately, these traits also make them prone to reproductive issues. Due to their narrow hips and small pelvis, Frenchies often require C-sections to give birth safely. Additionally, spaying your Frenchie can prevent these issues altogether and ensure a healthy and happy life for your furry friend. Related posts:.
As their name suggests, this mix is made up of a German Shepherd and a Wolf, these hybrids crossbreeds are often called Wolfdogs or Wolf-Shepherds. Whilst there are many types of German Shepherd Wolf mixes, the Saarloos Wolfhund is the most notable. They were created by Leendert Saarloos back in when he crossbred a German Shepherd with a Eurasian wolf. The aim of this cross-breeding was to bring back the natural traits the GSD had lost when domesticated. You should also keep in mind that they are illegal in several areas across the US, so do your research before keeping one. The German Shepherd already resembles a wolf, so this hybrid does not look hugely different. Due to the genetic diversity, there is no way to tell what a specific pup will look like when they mature. However, there could be a pup that will look more like their German Shepherd parent, rather than their Wolf parent, and vice-versa. Wolfdogs tend to have smaller skulls than the common wolf, they have pointed ears and brown almond-shaped eyes. Height and Weight A German Shepherd can weigh around lb male and lb female. Males stand at around inches and females between inches. So depending on age, sex, diet, and genetics, the German Shepherd Wolf mix can weigh anywhere from lbs. Colors Pups can be found in a number of colors as the classic German Shepherd has 11 different official colors, with the most common being black and tan. But they can also have colors such as sable, black, white, and gray. Wolves can be mottled gray in color, but occasionally can be nearly pure white, red, brown, or even black. Coat German Shepherds have a thick double coat that is medium length. They have a dense outer coat with straight hair that lies close to the body. They have short undercoats and long, coarse outer coats. The GSD and Wolves have very similar coats, so it is fairly likely that their mix will have a double coat and medium-length fur. They will also shed annually, getting rid of their winter coat when the days become warmer. It is safe to say that this crossbreed should not be kept in warmer climates. German Shepherd Wolf Mix Personality and Temperament Both German Shepherds and Wolves have very different personalities, so it can be difficult to predict what their mix will be like. But we will do our best below to explain some behaviors which should be expected. Wolves are pack animals, meaning they are very protective and loyal to their family — they will do anything to protect their kin. They are den-dwelling animals, meaning that your mix is likely to dig anywhere they want. Being wild animals, Wolves are reserved when it comes to unfamiliar surroundings, people, and inanimate objects. They may be very protective but will cower at the sight of strangers. It should be said that the German Shepherd Wolf will be unpredictable in social situations, they can become aggressive when fearful. This can be avoided by giving them lots of socialization as a young pup. They are also very curious and will try to escape whenever opportunity strikes, so make sure to keep your backyard securely fenced. This hybrid will have a strong prey drive, as the GSD was bred to herd livestock and the wolf is a natural predator, so your Wolfdog mix will chase anything and everything that moves. They are also prone to howling as this is how they communicate in a pack. This is not a dog that should be living with small children. This dog should be kept by experienced keepers who are firm and disciplined with their pooch. If they favor their German Shepherd parentage, they will be eager to please dog training will be easy. Either way, you should be training them with positive reinforcement. Give them rewards when they follow your command or when they stop unwanted behavior. Many people believe that dominance training is the way forward with this dog as wolves are pack animals, but studies show that this training method leads to further aggression and reduces the quality of your relationship with your doggy friend. This is a dog for someone who has experience training strong-willed dogs before — you need to be firm and consistent. Do not let them think they are the boss of you. Socializing a dog like this is very important as the wolf can be reserved and unpredictable. Make sure to socialize them with a range of people and different situations. Mental stimulation is very important if you do not want your Wolfdog to get bored and chew everything in sight. You can give them lots of toys and play with them, playtime can decrease their stress levels and make them more confident. Caring for a German Shepherd Wolf Mix Owning a German Shepherd Wolf mix is not something you should take lightly, there are specific laws on owning Wolfdogs, so you should check your state regulations. This cross breed needs an owner who is experienced in training difficult dogs that need lots of attention and care. You will also need a large backyard which has very secure fencing. You should not own a Wolfdog in heavily populated areas, as they have a habit of howling a lot. There are many other responsibilities that you will have when owning this hybrid so keep reading to learn more… Exercise Requirements This is a very energetic dog, as wolves can travel up to 30 miles a day. They will need around hours of exercise each day to keep fit and healthy. Not getting their exercise will result in them destroying your furniture and anything else they can bite. It is also recommended to let them roam around in a fenced backyard, so they can play, dig and explore. You should not take your Wolfdog to dog parks and make sure to keep them on a leash and harness. They will need regular brushing to avoid matting and tangles, and more when shedding season comes along. Do not bathe this dog too much as it can strip away the natural oils that make the coat healthy and shiny. As with every dog, dental hygiene is important so brush their teeth once a week. You should also cut their nails, to avoid overgrowth and splitting. Feeding and Diet Deciding what to feed your Wolfdog is not an exact science, but you should be feeding your dog a diet rich in protein. Avoid buying traditional store-bought dog food as these are rich in carbohydrates and artificial ingredients. You will need to do research into what type of meat-based diets you would prefer your dog to eat. Be mindful of how much you are feeding your dog, too much food can lead to obesity. Keep an eye on their weight by using a body condition score. Known Health Problems Wolfdogs are generally healthy animals, but they are still prone to certain health issues. Having pet insurance could save you from the headache of going to the vets with reimbursement for every vet bill from now on! The German Shepherd resembles a wolf in appearance, to begin with, so you can count on the hybrid to be large, with a long face, thick coat and pointed ears. The coat of the Wolfshepherd can be gray, sable, white, black, or a mixture of these colors. It will most likely inherit the thick fur that is standard for both parents and is known to shed heavily. You can take a closer look at this Wolfdog mix in the video. Is a Wolf Shepherd dangerous? If a Wolfdog is uncomfortable, it can attack out of defense. This has earned them a reputation for being dangerous and they are banned in several US states. Wolves build dens and roam frequently. They also have a strong pack and predatory instincts. These traits translate into destructive behavior for the Wolfdog, such as digging holes in the garden and chewing up wooden furniture. They also may urinate more frequently than other dog breeds to mark their territory. It takes one who is passionate and willing to devote time and energy to a German Shepherd Wolf dog. Because of its unpredictable nature, it is advised that this crossbreed should not be left alone around other pets and especially children. Black German Shepherd Wolf mixes in particular, are known for being less tolerant towards children. They have been known to react by biting and shaking. This is a natural response of the Black GSD when correcting puppy behavior. With rigorous training, a Wolfdog makes a protective and loyal companion. They are strong, intelligent, playful, and affectionate towards family. Are Wolf German Shepherd Mix health issues common? As we mentioned above the life expectancy of a German Shepherd Wolf Mix is up to 14 or even .However, the German Shepherd breed is vulnerable to serious genetic diseases that can get passed down to this particular Wolfdog hybrid. Hip Dysplasia : A painful hip joint deformity that causes loss of mobility and lameness. Elbow Dysplasia: A joint deformity that affects the elbows and can cause pain and loss of mobility. Bloat: A build-up of gas in the stomach that can cause it to twist and lead to shock or even death. Cancer: Abnormal cell growth that can spread throughout the body. Feeding time Since the Wolfshepherd is prone to hip and elbow dysplasia , it is important to keep her on a strict feeding regime to avoid obesity. Aim for 2 to 3 cups of meat-based dog food divided between meals each day. Remember that every dog has different health needs. Exercise time The German Shepherd Wolf hybrid needs daily activity to thwart destructive behavior and keep physically fit. A house with a large fenced-in yard is the most suitable environment for this crossbreed. They need room to stretch their legs and roam. If you live in an apartment, you might want to consider a smaller dog breed or perhaps a dog that resembles a wolf. Not only is an apartment too small a space, but this mix prefers to spend time outdoors, like its Wolf parent. Playing fetch with a ball or tugging games can help get that chewing habit under control. Can you train a Wolf Shepherd? This is the only way to lessen the inclination towards aloofness, fear, and an unpredictable temperament. Training needs to start at the puppy stage to be effective. Be prepared, because Wolfdogs are not easy to train and require time, patience, and consistency. Dominance is one of the main German Shepherd Wolf mix characteristics that you will have to focus on. As the owner, you must be confident and assert that you are the leader of the pack. If attention wanes during a game or your Wolfdog decides to ignore commands, stay positive yet firm and above all — do not let them dominate you. Socialization is key to helping a Wolfdog accept other pets in the household. Walks around the park can help, but always keep your pup on a leash. Supervise them when other dogs are present. When searching for reputable German Shepherd Wolf mix breeders, look for someone that is open to you visiting and will provide health clearances. They should be able to answer questions about the parents, especially regarding medical history. This results in a high number of them being left at rescue shelters. Here are 3 Wolfdog rescues where you can look for a German Shepherd Wolf mix along with other Wolfdogs. Many places have laws against owning any sort of wolf mix, including a German Shepherd-Worf hybrid. This is because, unlike dogs, wolves are completely wild animals, and while they can be domesticated to a certain extent, that wild streak is likely to live on. It just means that in extreme circumstances, these dogs are likely to be less predictable than those without wolf DNA inside them. The appeal is undeniable, but you still need to do your homework before adding one to your pack. Most experts would contend that a wolf mix is one with a purebred wolf in its bloodline within four or five generations. They act just like canine puppies for the most part. However, once they start to grow up, the wolf-like tendencies begin to emerge. They can start slowly in adolescence before becoming extremely apparent in adulthood. Many people have fallen in love with a wolf mix puppy, thinking that it has the features of a wolf but the sweetness of a dog. That may be true in some cases, but in others, the animal grew up to be quite a fearsome pet indeed. They Can Be Quite Unpredictable You would think that a wolf mix would be proud and fearless, never backing down from anyone or anything. The fact of the matter is that while these dogs can certainly be ferocious, they also tend to be extremely shy and skittish. Wolves are scared of people and for good reason, sadly. That means that while your German Shepherd Wolf mix would readily sacrifice their own lives to protect their family, they usually also prefer to cower and hide when strangers arrive. That can lead to dangerous situations, especially with children. If you push these dogs past their breaking point, the wolf will eventually come out — and that can have tragic results. Some of these animals take after their canine parents, while others favor their wolf lineage. Generally speaking, though, you can expect your German Shepherd Wolf mix to be fiercely loyal and protective of their families yet wary of outsiders. Due to the wolf in them, these dogs tend to be more pack-driven than other pups. You may even want to give them a canine companion, although this can have its own set of challenges. That intelligence makes them capable escape artists, though. Are These Dogs Good for Families? Little ones will often push a pet too far, and you never know when the wolf will come out. If you do bring one of these animals into a home with little kids, never leave them unsupervised. You should also teach your kids how to deal with the dog, making sure they know not to mess with their food or toys or abuse them in any way. Older kids may be able to get along with them, though, so if your children are a little more mature, you might be able to bring one of these dogs home without issue. All of this assumes that you know how to handle one of these animals, of course. They get lonely easily and may become depressed if left alone for long periods of time. However, they may be prone to aggression with other dogs as well. Pack culture is a much bigger deal for wolves than for dogs, so your mix may be prone to dominance. Other pets, however, are likely a bad idea. Cats and smaller animals will most likely be seen as food rather than friends, so you should keep your German Shepherd Wolf mix as far away from them as possible. All of this also means that you need to be absolutely certain that your mix is kept on a secure leash and collar or harness during walks. You may not feel up to the task once you realize how much is involved with raising one of these animals. That will affect how much they eat, but you can expect them to have a healthy appetite regardless. These are energetic pups, so they need as much long-lasting energy as they can get. Avoid problematic ingredients like soy, wheat, corn, or animal by-products, as these can make your dog fat without giving them much in the way of nutrition. Many dogs have trouble processing these ingredients as well. In addition to feeding them a proper diet, you should exercise strict portion control and never allow them to free-feed. As a result, expect to provide your pet with plenty of exercises. They can easily destroy your entire lawn if not properly tuckered out. Long walks are a good idea, but you should also play fetch or something that requires more energy every day. Just be careful not to make them run and jump too much, as it puts quite a bit of strain on their spines. Mental stimulation is equally important. You can give them puzzle toys, play hide-and-seek, or put them through extensive training sessions. They respond best to positive reinforcement, so try to convince them to cooperate by offering them treats or affection. The problem with this is that eventually, those emotions will boil over. That could lead to unpleasant consequences for you. The shedding becomes extreme twice a year when the dogs blow their coats. You should only need to bathe them if they get visibly dirty, but you will need to brush their teeth and trim their claws regularly. Be sure to keep their ears clean as well, as they can be prone to infection. This reduces the risk of spinal issues later in life. Still, there are a few things to be aware of. Minor Conditions. Wolf vs. While these are generic numbers, they can still give you a better understanding of the ideal size to expect. Of course, note that your German Shepherd has to be a purebred, and the mating needs professional intervention. Below is a photo of a Czechoslovakian Wolfdog , which was initially bred from working line German Shepherds and Carpathian grey wolves in .This hybrid has a special diet requirement. Look for high-quality dog food that contains real meat as the first ingredient, and avoid fillers like corn, wheat, and soy. Some options include: Dry kibble: This is the most common type of dog food and is convenient and easy to store. Look for brands that offer high-quality protein sources like chicken, beef, or fish. Wet food: This type of dog food is more palatable than dry kibble and can be a good option for picky eaters. Look for brands that use real meat and avoid fillers. Raw food: Some dog owners prefer to feed their GSD-Wolf Mix a raw food diet, which consists of uncooked meat, bones, and organs. But why do I stress it under the diet section? Hip dysplasia: This is a genetic condition that affects the hip joint and can cause pain and mobility issues. To help prevent hip dysplasia, make sure your dog maintains a healthy weight and gets regular exercise. To help prevent these issues, feed your dog a high-quality diet and avoid table scraps and other human foods. Joint problems: Because of their size and activity level, GSD-Wolf Mixes are also prone to joint problems like arthritis. Multivitamins: A multivitamin supplement can help ensure that your dog is getting all the essential vitamins and minerals they need to stay healthy. Here are some tips to help you keep your GSD-Wolf hybrid healthy and happy. Grooming Your German Shepherd-Wolf Mix has a thick, dense coat that requires regular grooming to keep it healthy and shiny. Here are some grooming tips to keep in mind: Brush their coat at least once a week to remove loose fur and prevent matting. Bathe them as needed, but not too often, as it can strip their coat of its natural oils. Trim their nails regularly to prevent them from getting too long and causing discomfort. Clean their ears regularly to prevent infections. These are only a few tips. Ideally, once you get a German Shepherd Wolf Mix, you may encounter new requirements based on their health conditions as well. Nevertheless, regular grooming is mandatory! Combining the power and strength of a German Shepherd and a wolf, this mix is inherently stronger. Here are some exercise tips to keep in mind: Aim for at least 2 hours of exercise per day, including walks, runs, and playtime. Provide plenty of mental stimulation, such as puzzle toys and training sessions. Consider enrolling your dog in agility classes or other activities to keep them engaged. Training Your GSD-Wolf Mix is a smart and independent breed that needs consistent training and socialization to thrive. In fact, they can understand and grasp commands faster than usual because of their mix. Here are some training tips to keep in mind: Start training and socialization early to prevent behavior issues. Use positive reinforcement techniques, such as treats and praise, to encourage good behavior. Be patient and consistent in your training approach. Consider working with a professional trainer if you need help. Maintaining a German Shepherd Wolf Mix requires a bit more effort than other breeds, but with the right approach, you can keep your dog healthy and happy for years to come. By providing them with plenty of exercise, training, and health care, you can enjoy a strong and rewarding bond with your unique and beautiful German Shepherd Wolf Mix. They have a natural instinct to protect their loved ones and can be fiercely loyal to those they trust. Your German Shepherd Wolf Mix is a smart and inquisitive breed that thrives on mental stimulation. They are quick learners and respond well to positive reinforcement training techniques. Similar to their parents, your GSD-Wolf hybrid is an independent breed that can be stubborn at times. They may not always follow commands or listen to their owners and may prefer to do things their own way. However, this hybrid needs early and consistent socialization to prevent behavior issues. They may be wary of strangers and other animals if they are not properly socialized from a young age. Your GSD-Wolf Mix has a strong prey drive and may be prone to chasing small animals like squirrels and rabbits. A German Shepherd Wolf Mix is safe for people professionally trained to handle wolf dogs but is not safe for ordinary pet owners, first-time dog owners, and families with children. Three primary reasons move people to interbreed wolves and German Shepherds, or any other dog breed: The desire to create the attractive wolf look in a wolfdog. The expectation is that breeding a German Shepherd and a wolf will produce an exceptionally hybrid pup with a balanced blend of the domestic and the wild traits in the two canines. The attempt to tame the wild in the wolf and create a fiercer guard dog than the purebred German Shepherd. Unfortunately, these expectations rarely materialize. Instead, German Shepherd Wolf hybrids can manifest extreme aggression and stubbornness for several reasons. Dogs sexually mature by 6 to 8 months, but they also have less aggressive hormonal changes and a more stable behavioral pattern in the years of sexual maturity. In contrast, wolves only mature sexually at around 1 to 4 years. The species-specific roles that come with sexual maturity, such as fighting their place in pack roles, can generate aggression and stubbornness and make their behavior patterns extremely unpredictable. Inheriting the unpredictable behavior of a wolf can make German Shepherd Wolf Mixes challenging to manage. And pruning out the wolf traits in the Wolf Shepherd can be tricky, even with training. That means having to deal with a difficult-to-manage pet. A Wild Prey Drive Prey drive is the instinctive tendency of carnivores to pursue and capture prey, also known as predatory behavior. Both the wolf and the German Shepherd have a strong prey drive , the first more than the second. This behavior can make your wolfdog threaten the safety of livestock and other animals when you walk with them or even try to escape to meet this instinctual hunting drive. Territoriality Wolves are a territorial species, a trait that German Shepherd Wolf Mixes can inherit. Wolfdogs often show territoriality through urine marking. But being territorial especially means that the wolfdog will be possessive of things and spaces in the home. As a result, the Wolf Shepherd will tend to be aggressive and defensive when other animals and people approach areas and things they consider to belong to them. Winter Wolf Syndrome Winter wolf syndrome, or seasonal aggression, is the aggression that characterizes wolves and wolfdogs around the mating season. The manifestation of the winter wolf syndrome can vary from wolf to wolf or wolfdog to wolfdog. Some wolves and wolf dogs may just show a bit of grumpiness, while others can show outright aggressiveness and extreme possessiveness. In German Shepherd Wolf hybrids and other wolfdogs, the extent of the winter wolf syndrome behaviors may vary with: Wolf content: The amount of wolf in a German Shepherd Dog. Sex: Males show protective behavior towards females, and females may show aggression towards their fellow females. In both cases, the wolfdogs can direct this aggression toward the owner or other persons. According to the Colorado Wolf Sanctuary , because of the natural element in the winter wolf syndrome, wolves and wolfdog owners should be aware that it is unsafe to interact directly with their pets in the five months or more around the mating season. The resulting question from the discovery that wolfdogs can be unsafe is whether governments allow people to own wolfdogs, even though they can turn violent. In some states, owning a wolfdog is illegal. Others regulate the ownership of wolfdogs with the same laws set for the ownership of wild animals, while others regulate wolfdogs in the same way as dogs. When owning a wolfdog is permitted by law, some states and local laws may specify the permissible wolf content in the wolfdog or require owners to get additional permits. A good number of states, including California, Montana, Idaho, and Florida, have both local and state restrictions on wolfdog ownership. Fewer states like Alaska, Georgia, Michigan, and Illinois completely outlaw wolfdogs. No state in the US is without restrictions on wolfdog ownership. As laws are constantly changing, please contact your city, county, and state governments before purchasing a wolf dog. In other countries like the UK, you require a license to own first-generation F1 wolf dogs, which are regulated by the Dangerous Wild Animals Act .However, it is legal to own a wolfdog as long as it is 3 generations F3 from the parent wolf. In other words, you can own a German Shepherd wolfdog if it is born of second-generation wolfdogs or a second-generation wolfdog and a German Shepherd. Going forward, you should check the safety and legality associated with the mix before you decide to get one. Even if you possess adequate knowledge in raising one, this hybrid is pretty challenging and can pose complexities on the go. Related Posts You May Like:. Prone to shedding. Lifespan: 12 - 14 years. They can have several health issues including joint problems and cancer. No - definitely not recommended for families with young kids. Unpredictable temperaments. Although GSDs are easily trainable, wolves are wild animals. These hybrids should be reserved for very experienced dog owners. They need a ton of exercise, which is easier said than done. Once they reach a certain age and level of strength, walking your wolfdog in public can be difficult. In most places in the United States, it is illegal to own a wild animal like a wolf unless you have a special and expensive wildlife permit. GSD-wolf mixes walk a tightrope between being considered wild animals or domestic pets. Because of the wolf parent or grandparent, the law considers the resulting mix not reliably domesticated, and thus prone to acting dangerously. Therefore, if you want a wolf-dog mix, you may have to do a lot of research to even find a place in the world that will let you do so. Some proponents of wolf-dog mixes claim that some dog breeds have more grey wolf parent DNA than other dog breeds. If these breeds are allowed, then so should GSD and wolf mixes. According to Science Trends. These breeds include the Finnish Spitz, the Shar-Pei, the Siberian Husky another breed often crossed with wolves , and the Greenland dog. However, the ancestors of these breeds branched off from wolves thousands of years ago, and not simply one or two generations ago. Over one hundred years ago, German shepherds were popularly called Alsatian Wolf Dogs, since they were bred in the Alsace region of what is now France and looked like wolves. However, no wolves were actually involved in creating German Shepherd mixes. Other breeds mistakenly thought to have wolves in their recent ancestry include Siberian Huskies and the Alaskan Malamute. Although descended from wolves, the last wolf in their pedigree was thousands of years ago. Even puppies in the same litter can act in vastly different ways. Wolves tend to ignore people and do what they want. Any wolf-dog mix will be prone to unpredictable behavior at times, and will tend to act more like a wolf than a dog. Wolves are intensely territorial creatures. They attack any predator in their home range, including wolves not in their packs. This behavior has convinced some people that GSD-wolf mixes make better guard dogs than dogs. This, however, is a myth. According to the International Wolf Center, dogs have been bred for thousands of years to bark when intruders appear. Wolves on the other hand stay silent. This is because large dogs age faster than small dogs. Why this happens in dogs and not other species is not known. The future health of a wolf mix is harder to predict than the health of a purebred dog. After decades of study, it is now known what health problems certain breeds are prone to. Because German Shepherd — wolf hybrids are a genetic toss of the dice, you have no way of knowing what health problems these animals will be prone to. A wolf mix needs to be well-behaved in order to be treated for an illness, but the mix may even be too dangerous to treat. Never assume that all vets will be willing to take in a German shepherd wolf mix as a patient. All the vets in your area may refuse to work on such an animal, and this is not due to prejudice against wolves. Although all vets are trained to help domestic animals like dogs, very few are trained in the care of exotics. One problematic area for vets and exotic animal owners is that of vaccination. Rabies vaccines are crucial for dog owners. Because of the threat of rabies and the problems of the rabies vaccine working on wolf-dogs, any wolf-dog that shows signs of rabies or has been exposed to a rabid animal needs to be euthanized. The two most common medical problems with any wolf-dog mix are complications from being overweight and hip dysplasia. Being overweight can also contribute to hip dysplasia. Hip dysplasia is very common in German shepherds and in most large dog breeds. Hip dysplasia symptoms like limping start when the dog is young, and gets worse over time if left untreated. This is a very painful and chronic condition that may require surgery to treat. Depending on the genetic roll of the dice, a GSD wolf puppy may be looking at a very short, unhealthy life. GSDs are also prone to a deadly and incurable condition called degenerative myelopathy that hits GSDs seven years of age and older. However, this can become quite complicated since wolf-dogs cannot be walked and played with like normal dogs. Puppies may be able to walk on a leash in the beginning. Sadly, a lot of wolf-dog hybrids wind up staying permanently in an outdoor pen because they cannot be walked or trained. Despite the endless unknowns surrounding a GSD wolf mix, their size is actually predictable. The smallest hybrids will be as small as a GSD — roughly 49 pounds. The largest will be about pounds, which is the size of a large male Mackenzie Valley wolf, the largest known wolf species. As is common in most wolf species and dog breeds, females tend to be smaller. GSDs are as tall as small wolves, but wolves can actually reach heights of 34 inches tall at the shoulders. GSD wolf mixes come in a wide variety of colors, but most have two or even three tones to their coats. Common two-toned colors include black and tan, grey and white, silver and white, brown and grey, and tan and grey. Puppies of dogs, wolf-dog mixes, and even wolves can be trained and easily handled. However, once the wolf-dog hybrid becomes physically and sexually mature, all bets are off. Just when a GSD wolf mix matures differs from puppy to puppy. Dogs mature a lot faster than wolves. A German shepherd wolf mix could mature as early as six months, when a GSD matures, or as late as four years old when a wolf typically matures. However, these are not wolves. However, if you want an animal that obeys commands all the time, why not just save yourself the time and money, and go with a dog? They also ask people for affection. They have to be taught to hunt by their older pack-mates. They grow accustomed to being given food at predictable times. All wolf hybrids, including GSD wolf mixes, have severely bitten or attacked people and pets in the United States. Wolf-hybrids often attack children more than adults because children make noises resembling small prey animals. More often, wolf-dog mixes will attack other pets than people. These are very territorial animals. If any other animal is perceived as being on their turf, a GSD wolf mix may not only attack but kill a dog, cat, or other animal. Not only will you have to pay restitution and possible court costs, but depending on your local laws, your GSD wolf mix may be confiscated and euthanized. Your chances of appeal are very small, and will involve significant legal expenses. The only known factors are that this is a large animal with the ability to inflict serious damage on pets, livestock, wildlife, and people, especially children. You may have to keep the animal in a pen for the rest of its life. You may never be able to find a vet willing to look after the GSD wolf mix. You may have laws banning the ownership of such an animal where you live. A GSD wolf mix puppy or adult costs thousands of dollars. You will need plenty of land, fencing, and legal advice in order to keep it. When it comes to any wolf-dog mix, leave it alone. Get one of the safer German Shepherd mixes instead. German Shepherd wolf mix breeds are one of the biggest dogs you can get, averaging to around 24 inches tall. In terms of weight, they average to around 60 lbs heavy when they are fully grown. While this is slightly smaller than the average German Shepherd, this is still large for a dog. Remember, their personality will make them seem even larger than they physically are. This mix breed is highly unpredictable. This means that while German Shepherds are generally bigger than the wolf mix breed, they are much more obedient. A larger and more obedient German Shepherd will seem much smaller than a GSD wolf mix that has an unpredictable and potentially dangerous temperament. Even though GSD wolf mix breeds might grow to be slightly smaller than a regular German Shepherd, the average lifespan of both is the same. They are both considered medium-large breeds, which means that they can come with a variety of health issues including joint problems and cancer. What percentage of German Shepherds are wolf? Technically speaking, every dog derives from wolves. They were never bred with wolves. It all depends on the genetics of the German Shepherd, as some might have come from a background that bred wolves into the family. Instead, German Shepherds descend from the Canidae biological family in the same way as other domestic dogs do. This biological family includes wolves, foxes, and dingoes. Other breeds of dogs like Siberian Huskies and Finnish Spitz are more closely related to wolves as their ancestors had been wolves for thousands of years. How can you tell if your German Shepherd is part wolf? German Shepherds were never bred with wolves when the breed was standardized in Germany in the s, which means that there is no element of wolf in their DNA. Still, they are part of the Canidae family in the same way as other domesticated dogs are. However, you can still commit to a genetic test to see if your German Shepherd has come from a family that attempted to breed a wolf into the genetic line. Also, when buying or adopting your GSD, the seller should make you aware of if the dog is part wolf.

So we usually have a good selection of very high quality puppies. View Our Available Puppies! Not all mini Goldendoodles are equal, there are a few different versions to choose from each having a little different genetic background based on the pups parents. We will explain all the differences in Mini Goldendoodle puppies and how they are bred below. We raise all versions of the mini goldendoodle breed. F1 Mini Goldendoodle Pups. A F1 puppy is also known as a First Generation puppy. The puppies mother is a Golden Retriever and the pups dad is a Mini Poodle. This version of mini goldendoodle usually has soft wavy or curly puppy fur. They will shed until they lose their puppy fur, after shedding they will shed a lot less, but will shed. This version is partially hypoallergenic and usually requires low maintenance. F1 mini goldendoodles usually need to be groomed every 6 months along with daily brushing to keep their curly hair from matting and getting tangled. The dogs usually grow up having great temperaments similar to golden retrievers. They usually get about inches high at the shoulder and range in weight from pounds. F1b Mini Goldendoodle Pups. An F1b is known as a second-generation mini goldendoodle with the pups mother being already an F1 Goldendoodle and the pups dad being a mini poodle also. So the difference between F1 and F1b is that the mom is not a golden retriever but an actual F1 Goldendoodle. They also have very soft curly hair but with almost no shedding. This F1b version is semi-hypoallergenic and a better choice for anyone who has pet allergies. The F1b also should be brushed on a daily basis but will need to be groomed more frequently then a F1. A 6 to 8 week grooming schedule is recommended to keep their coat in perfect condition. F1b Mini goldendoodles get around 18 to 20 inches tall at the shoulders and range between pounds in weight. F1bb Mini Goldendoodle Pups. An F1bb goldendoodle is also known as a third-generation mini goldendoodle. This mini goldendoodle version has a coat more similar to a poodle than of a golden retriever. This is because the pup is more of a poodle than a retriever. Making it the very best version for anyone with pet allergies. A 6 to 8 week grooming schedule is required to help prevent knots or matting. This version is super intelligent and loving, and usually seems to have more energy than the other versions of Mini goldendoodles. This version is usually smaller in size, weighing around pounds and only getting inches tall at the shoulders. The smaller size makes them a great size for smaller homes and apartments. Written step-by-step video tutorial: For the first few steps, don't press down too hard with your pencil. Use light, smooth strokes to begin. Step 1: Draw two circles as guides for the first part of the golden retriever's body. First draw four small marks for the height and width of the circle, then connect the marks using curved lines. Sketch lightly at first so that it's easy to erase if you make a mistake. But the circles don't have to be perfect. They're just guides. If you do want perfect circles, trace the outer rim of a coin, a bottle cap or any other object with a circular edge. The circle on the right should be smaller than the one on the left, and their edges should touch. Place the circle on the right slightly higher so that the top edges of both circles are at the same level. Step 2: Draw another circle on the top, left side as a guide for the golden retriever's head. Draw this circle the same way. First draw four marks that indicate the height and width, then connect the marks using curved lines. The edges of the circles should touch. This circle should be a bit smaller than the body circle on the right. Step 3: Draw a curved horizontal line across the golden retriever's head. This is a construction line that will help you place the dog's facial features later. Add a curved vertical line on the top left side of the head for another construction line. Step 4: Draw a small circle on the lower left side of the head as a guide for the dog's muzzle. The top edge of this circle should touch the construction line, and the bottom edge should be outside of the head. The left edge of the circle should also be outside the head. Pay attention to the size of this circle in relation to the golden retriever's head. On the right side of the head, below the horizontal construciton line, draw a V-shaped line for the golden retriever's other ear. Add an extra line on the V-shaped line that attaches to the edge of the head. To complete this step, use two symmetrical curved lines and an arc at the bottom of them. Add the facial features of the Golden Retriever. Now you should add two oval eyes and the nose using a curved line. Depict the top of the head and ears. Draw curved lines above the previously drawn elements and on the sides of the head. Sketch out the torso and forelimbs of the dog. Below the previously drawn head, draw curved lines, as shown in the figure. Add the fingers on the front legs of the dog. At the bottom of the previously drawn paws, draw short, curved lines to indicate the toes. Start drawing the back of the Golden Retriever. On the right and left sides of the previously drawn torso and front legs, add curved lines. Finish drawing the torso and paws. Draw the flanked feet and lower torso using curved lines. Add the outlines of the fingers on the hind legs. Color the drawing. To color the Golden Retriever, use beige, gray, and black. A post shared by Jami Miller portie. They require tons of exercise, though you should be careful not to over-exercise them. They require plenty of socialization and training to become well-behaved adults. These dogs are extremely intelligent, so they often take well to training. However, they also need lots of mental stimulation. Without it, the puppies can become quite destructive. Your best bet is a specialized breeder, though you may have to travel far to pick up your puppy. They may come at a higher price than other breeds due to their rarity. As always, be sure to research any breeder before purchasing a puppy from them. Ethical breeders will produce healthy, well-adjusted puppies. Ask about what health tests they perform before breeding the parents, as well as any health certificates and health records for the puppies. They perform well in dog sports and other high-intensity activities that require a lot of training and respond well to positive reinforcement techniques. These dogs also love to be around their family and love attention and affection. They require plenty of attention compared to other breeds. Portipoos tend to be extremely intelligent. However, they can also be headstrong if not trained early. Dogs often experience an adolescent period just like humans, when they can be more stubborn. These dogs need lots of exercise and playtime. Their intelligence means they require lots of mental stimulation, too. Many of them love swimming, but they have to be introduced to the water at a young age, otherwise, they may be fearful of it. Are These Dogs Good for Families? However, they only do best in active families, as they have a very high-energy temperament. They may also not be suitable for families with younger children, as they can be a bit too hyper and energetic. They need regular exercise and playtime. The Portuguese Water Dog Poodle mix can absolutely get along with other pets. Of course, you should always supervise the Portipoo with other pets, as they can be a bit too rough in some cases. However, they do not have any special dietary needs. Because of their active nature, they may require more protein and overall calories than other dogs. There are many dog foods out there for active dogs, and these may work best for Portipoos. A high-quality commercial food is vital for their health. However, be sure to choose the correct food for your particular dog. Puppies should consume puppy dog food, for instance. If your dog is overweight, you may want to switch to low-calorie dog food. Plan to take them on walks and play with them regularly. These canines love just about any type of activity, including swimming, playing fetch, and walking. Be careful not to overexercise these dogs, especially as puppies. They can push themselves too hard and damage their growth plates, which can lead to hip dysplasia. Therefore, they take well to training and are often extremely obedient. Early socialization is necessary to prevent behavioral issues, though. While they do learn quickly, they are extremely intelligent and need a lot of mental stimulation. This mental stimulation need can be fulfilled partly by regular training. They have thick, curly coats in most cases, and they require regular brushing to prevent matting, as well as professional grooming. Brushing also helps keep their coats clean, as the brush can remove loose hair and dirt. However, they do need a bath every 2—3 months. Being a mix prevents them from inheriting many of the common health conditions that affect other dogs. For instance, they can be prone to hip dysplasia, which is a genetic condition that affects the joints. It causes mobility problems and arthritis-like symptoms, though at a much earlier age than arthritis. These can lead to weakness, weight loss, and lethargy. Because Portipoos have floppy ears, they are prone to ear infections. Keeping their ears clean can help, including drying them completely after swimming. Skin allergies are often common, causing itching and irritation. Care Grooming Mini Portidoodle dogs are medium to low maintenance when it comes to grooming. Because they have a medium-length wavy or curly coat, they require a quick brush every other day. Their ears should be cleaned regularly, and their teeth brushed a few times every week. It is recommended to start the Mini Portidoodle puppy Mini Portipoo puppy grooming process early to accustom them to the grooming tools and get them comfortable with their ears, paws, and bodies getting handled. Grooming your Mini Portidoodle is essential for their well-being. They enjoy running, chasing, fetching, playing Frisbee, swimming, and any activity that allows them to burn off energy. Because they are great at dog sports like agility, tracking, rally, and water sports, these dogs love challenges and having a job to do. To keep them fit, healthy, and exercised, they need to be walked for an average of 30 to 60 minutes each day and given canine puzzles, toys, and activities that keep their minds stimulated and their bodies worked out. Health Mini Portidoodle puppies are bred by carefully crossing two healthy, routinely vet-checked, purebred dog breeds. They enjoy superior health thanks to hybrid vigor, and they have very few health concerns that can be possible during their lifespans. Common issues in all dog breeds include hip dysplasia, cataracts, allergies, dental issues, and in some cases hypothyroidism. These can occur in Mini Portidoodle adults, most commonly during their senior years. Lifespan Like their parents, Mini Portidoodle dogs are long-lived, happy dogs. Their average lifespan is between 12 and 15 years. Dogs that are loved as members of the family tend to live longer, happier lives. Training Mini Portidoodles are very smart and highly trainable dogs. They can be taught up to words as well as complex obedience and agility lessons. They respond best to positive reinforcement training and reward-based methods. As eager-to-please dogs, Mini Portidoodle puppies can be motivated with praise, a gentle and fun approach, and vet-approved treat rewards. Early socialization, as well as early leash and crate training , are recommended for the Mini Portipoo puppy. Early socialization ensures that the Mini Portidoodle puppy grows up into a well-mannered, friendly, and non-aggressive adult dog. The Mini Portidoodle is somewhat independent and can be left alone for up to 6 hours each day. It is not recommended to leave the Mini Portidoodle or the Mini Portidoodle puppy alone for more than 6 hours each day as they might develop separation anxiety. Early training is key for a well-behaved adult dog. By mixing two highly popular dog breeds, professional breeders aimed to create a hybrid that would possess the hypoallergenic qualities, keen intelligence, agility, and fun nature of both parent breeds. A gift to the world, the Mini Portipoo breed impressed from the get-go and is one of the most sought-after doodle breeds. The Portuguese Water Dog puppy , also known as Cao de Agua dog of water is a centuries-old breed that originated in Portugal. With their webbed paws, excellent swimming capabilities, and great love for water, the Portuguese Water Dogs were trained to lure fish into nets, retrieve fishing gear and nets from the water, and act as messengers between fishing vessels. When fishing ships joined the modernized era, the Portuguese Water dogs moved on to become loyal, affectionate, and treasured companion pets. The Poodle puppies , famous for their big brains, gorgeous looks, and sweet nature, are a breed with a most impressive history. Developed in Germany, Poodles have been long admired for their stunning looks, retrieving skills, performance with the traveling circus, therapy work, companionship, and sporting titles. Officially recognized by the AKC for their three sizes Standard Poodle, Miniature Poodle, and Toy Poodle , Poodles, regardless of their size, never fail to impress with their agility, friendliness, and learning skills. They are considered the second most intelligent dog breed in the world and the top breed in many countries. Should a Portuguese Water Dog Mix take after their PWD parent, they will be an energetic, playful, and loving dog that is likely to love the water! Portuguese Water Dogs are known to have friendly, playful dispositions. They bond closely with their families and love being around them. They also tend to get along with just about everyone. As long as they are properly socialized, they do well with children, other dogs, and other pets. They are even open to meeting strangers! If the other parent breed has a similar temperament, then you should be able to expect the same from a Portuguese Water Dog Mix. You still want to talk to the breeder about the other parent as they will their own quirks you will want to be aware of. You can also meet the mother to see what her temperament is like and what behavior she is modeling for her puppies. The breeder should have started some socialization and training, but it is up to you to continue to train and socialize a puppy once you get them home. PWDs tend to be highly adaptable dogs. As long as they get enough daily exercise and attention, they do well in apartments as well as larger homes. They are not overly sensitive to the heat and cold, but you still need to be cautious with extremes as with all dogs. These dogs also do not like to be left alone for long periods of time. If the other parent breed is also highly adaptable, then you can expect the same from a Portuguese Water Dog Mix. Mixed-breed dogs can sometimes be healthier than purebred dogs. Both of these are genetic and reputable breeders should be testing for them. Reputable breeders should be screening their dogs regardless to avoid passing issues to puppies. Portuguese Water Dogs are intelligent dogs that are eager to please and pick up on things quickly. As long as you can handle their energy and keep training interesting, they are a good fit for owners of all experience levels. If the other parent breed is also highly trainable, then you can expect the same from a Portuguese Water Dog Mix. If the other parent breed is more difficult to train, then you will want to be prepared to enroll in puppy training classes. A Portuguese Water Dog Mix can inherit a coat similar to one of their parents or a coat that is a combination of both. If they end up with a Portuguese Water Dog coat, they will be low-shedding, require weekly brushing, and need the occasional bath. Trimming nails once or twice monthly keeps them from growing too long. Daily tooth brushing, plus cleanings at the vet when needed, can help prevent painful dental diseases later in life. A Portuguese Water Dog is a high-energy dog that needs daily walks, plus playtime, some time to run, and other activities to be happy and healthy. They are an agile and athletic breed that tends to be well-suited for several dogs sports and are one of the dog breeds that tend to love water. If the other parent breed is also a high-energy breed, then you should expect a high-energy Portuguese Water Dog Mix. If the other parent breed has a lower activity level, you will still need to be prepared for the potential of a high-energy dog. A fully-grown Portuguese Water Dog Mix stands inches tall and weighs pounds. The other parent breed can have a big effect on this, especially if they are the mother, so you want to ask the breeder about them. A PWD generally lives for years on average. Although the other parent breed may affect this slightly, you should be able to expect a similar average life span in a Portuguese Water Dog Mix. Now is the time to fill out the application and place your deposit. See our Facebook page, many people send in pictures and videos of their Bernese Water Dogs in action. Murphy Bridge was great. Little bit of crying but slept most of the way. He was reserved at first but has settled in nicely after just a few hours. We will send more as he grows. Thank you so much. We absolutely love him. Murphy turned 1 yesterday. I wanted to share some pictures as well as let you know he is growing. He is so affectionate, such a cuddler. He just loves being around people and other dogs. Very playful and definitely bull-headed at times. He enjoys walking, playing tug, chase, fetch, really anything as long as he is with us — to say he is spoiled would be an understatement. He either thinks he is a human or we are dogs, most likely the latter. We took him to Cape May in September -I shared some pics from then as well. He was a bit afraid of the ocean at first but would go in if we were in and were throwing things. He has a vet appt for his annual checkup tomorrow so we will see what he weighs. I am guessing around 70 lbs. He definitely is a bog boy, but not fat. Actually he is very trim. We are going to grow his hair out now for the winter, which does require daily brushing, but that is okay. He really does not shed much at all, just a few wispy hairs here and there. His hair is so soft, not wiry like some of the Portie hair. We still have people stop their cars just to say how beautiful he is and ask questions. Everyone thinks he is a Bernadoodle and we explain he is not! I actually have a colleague who I just shared your website with because I think she may want to get one of your BWD pups. She has 2 Porties. Here are some pics. Let me know if you have any questions. She is so incredible you sweet. We heard from Ben they delivered another dog locally. How fun for her to have a sibling nearby. Thanks so much for all your help in getting her to us. We are so in love with her. Thank you for this sweetie, we adore her! Smart, funny, super sweet. We love him so much!!!!! This guy is a lean 43 lbs. He is totally content doing whatever, as long as he is around the family. He is already out of the crate at night. He is very smart and has learned several commands very well. Bodhi even waited for permission to pick it back up! You will love the webbed feet just like our PWD all have. All our parents have had the Embark DNA testing done and have a clean bill of health from our local veterinarians. Many people love bigger dogs. The Bernese Mountain Dogs bred to Standard Poodles have worked out very well, being more active, less shedding, longer life spans. We figured: Why not a more in-line Designer combination? What could be better than a Bernese with a wavy PWD? The PWD puppies look like Bernese puppies with the same facial features vs. They will be much smarter, more active and agile, far less shedding, longer life spans with far less health issues. A Loving Loyal combination, the Designer Breeding association said will be a fantastic all-round winner. Characteristics Bernese Water Dog Profile with characteristics based on a scale of .Size 4. Portidoodles are affectionate, loving designer dogs obtained by cross-breeding a Portuguese Water Dog with a Standard or Mini Poodle. Portidoodles are also known as Portuguese Water Doodles. The first Portidoodle might have arrived on the scenes in the early s when breeders began experimenting with creating hybrid dogs having one Poodle parent. Often, they have low-shedding coats thanks to their Poodle genes. Breeders often aim to breed dogs that shed minimally. After all, there is a great demand for hypoallergenic dogs in families having individuals with pet allergies. The Portuguese Water Dog is ideal to mix with a Poodle because Porties as they are called fondly have hypoallergenic coats as well. In fact; President Obama selected a Portuguese Water Dog named Bo for his daughter Malia since she suffers from pet allergy symptoms around dogs. Let us take a look at the origins of the parent dog breeds in brief so we can understand more about the Portidoodle. They are smart, shed minimally, and are easy to train. Poodles are a German breed — often known as the pride of Germany. The word Poodle comes from the German word — Pudel — meaning to splash or water puddles. Poodles were bred to work in the water and help hunters to retrieve waterfowl. Today, Poodles consistently top the list of the most intelligent dog breeds in the world. Their smartness has earned them great accolades. Many Poodles have become famous because of their extraordinary abilities to perform tricks, dance, and even play musical instruments! No wonder you find Poodles performing in circuses, dog shows, etc. Their compact sizes also make them easy to travel with; a feature that circuses need in their animals. Today, Poodles are popular as companion pets because of their affectionate natures and easy trainability. Most importantly, people love them for their extraordinary charm and intelligence. Like Poodles, Porties are equipped with a curly, water-resistant, and hypoallergenic coat. They also have webbed feet which help them propel through choppy waters easily. Porties were mainly bred to assist fishermen to retrieve fish from the nets. They even helped rescue shipwrecked sailors and to retrieve gear tossed out in the water. Due to their ability to work in water, many Porties were employed by National Baseball teams to retrieve their balls from the bay. These dogs even earned money from this job and the proceeds were all given to various pet charities and animal shelters. Portuguese Water Dogs are a rare breed in Australia. After all, these hybrid dogs are not recognised by any of the major Kennel Clubs. In general, you could expect to find Mini Portidoodles PWD x mini-Poodle weighing in the range of pounds kg and measuring between inches cm. The colours seen in the hybrid dogs are black, white, fawn, grey, chocolate, merle, and sable. You could also have various markings and patterns. Are Portidoodles Hypoallergenic? Portidoodles tend to be low-shedding since both the parent dog breeds shed minimally. The Portuguese Water Dog and Poodle both have tight, curly coats. As mentioned, both breeds were originally developed to work around water bodies, and their water-resistant coats dried quickly while also keeping them warm in freezing waters. You may also follow the same precautions as you would when you are around dogs that shed. This includes washing your hands frequently, not allowing your Portidoodle to lick your face, taking baths frequently, vacuuming with a HEPA filter-based vacuum, etc. Do check out my guide on Hypoallergenic Poodle Mixes. Like both parent dog breeds, they are incredibly intelligent and respond well to obedience training. Puppy training with this cute dog is a must since rewards and praise can lead your dog to excellent behaviour. Never punish your Portidoodle or use aversive training methods and tools like prong collars, electric shock collars, slip leads or check chains. Such training methods have been shown to increase aggression, stress and fear. Your Portidoodle loves humans and will enthusiastically greet people. Portidoodles make friends easily and do not have a mean bone in them. This trait means that they do not make the best guard dogs, but they are still extremely loyal and possessive about their humans and their territory. Due to this possessive tendency, a Portidoodle might bark at mailmen, squirrels, and even other dogs that walk past your property. They are fun to be around and love to play with children. After all; these small dogs could get injured easily if the kids play rough. Also, you should socialise your Portidoodle with other dogs and cats from an early age. The best doodle breeders do this job for you. They raise their Portidoodle puppies at home where they are exposed to loud noises, doorbells, kitchen gadgets, and car rides, as well as other dogs, cats, and kids. This desensitises the puppies to various human experiences and makes them confident dogs. Inherently, Portidoodles are dependable, brave, and curious. It is rare to see a tired Portidoodle! They are eager to learn new things and quickly learn the commands and words for common objects. Like both parents, Portidoodles love water. Your pet will look forward to going to the beach and swimming and diving. Swimming is an excellent exercise for Portidoodles as it has a lower impact on their joints. Portidoodles are also prone to separation anxiety. Check out our guide to preventing and stopping separation anxiety in doodles for tips. They tend to get lonely, depressed, and bored if left home alone all day. You might want to consider enrolling your puppy in doggy daycare or hiring a pet sitter to watch your dog and take it out for walks especially if you will be gone out all day. How Much Do Portidoodles Cost? They are also rare as there are just a handful of breeders selling these pups. So, you could expect to pay more than purebred dog prices for this hybrid dog. Some Portidoodles including the mini size and those with rare coat colours and patterns can cost even more. You can always consider adopting a Portidoodle. But not many dog shelters have rescued, neglected, abandoned, or abused Portidoodles — they are a rare poodle cross. Try contacting a shelter near you. There is no shortage in the variety of dog food available in Australia. So much so, that it can get confusing as to what to feed your Portidoodle. You can always ask your breeder for guidance. Later on, your vet nutritionist can also recommend the right food for your pet based on its age, overall health, and activity levels. In general, look for dog food containing USDA-certified, human-grade ingredients. It should be minimally processed and ideally made in the USA. The Raggy Dogs enjoy homemade raw dog food meals. Their diet consists of human-grade meats, raw meaty bones, homegrown organic vegetables, offal and Ziwi Peak freeze-dried treats. Portidoodle — Portuguese Water Dog Poodle Mix: Health Issues and Lifespan Portidoodles are known to suffer from hip and elbow dysplasia, patellar luxation, and thyroid issues. Some dogs even develop progressive retinal atrophy, eyelid problems, and skin infections. Like Poodles, Portidoodles could experience cataracts, epilepsy, and ear infections. The best Portidoodle breeders DNA test their breeding dogs and conduct hip and elbow scoring. The lifespan of a Mini Portidoodle is between years. Standard Portidoodles have a lifespan of years. The Porti poodle mix is particularly popular because of its non-shedding, hypoallergenic coat and high trainability.
