Of high importance is that the parents have had their Hips and Elbows X-rayed and below the breed average, their eyes and hearts have been cleared by specialists and not carrying potential genetic issues and finally they have been DNA cleared of any potential inheritance genetic diseases. Ask people that have bought from a particular breeder their experience from the breeder and how the dogs are. Jump on their Instagram or Facebook and ask previous owners their experience of the puppies they have bought. Please be aware that there are pet stores and websites advertising each breed of dog claiming to be a 'breeder directory' but they are actually puppymills. Just because a website has a lot of pictures does not mean that those pictures were not stolen from other breeders!! Puppymills are massive breeding facilities that only view dogs as commodities. Breeding dogs are housed in shockingly poor conditions and bred until they can no longer produce, with very little human contact and suffer from neglect, poor health, parasitic infestations, and horrific wounds because they are forced to live on their feces confined to small filthy cages. So many people own dogs that have come from puppymills and dont even realize it. Unfortunately puppymills are thriving on the internet because buyers are not aware that such cruelty exists. Making such a purchase does not "rescue" the puppy- it in fact condemns puppymill dogs to a life of torture. It is estimated that there are over 4 million dogs being bred in puppymills every single year! Labradoodle tails vary in length, thickness, coat type, how high they are set, and so forth. So it usually helps to imagine a Labrador tail and an undocked Poodle, and expect anything in between. But however they look, there are some important tail facts every Labradoodle owner should know. Which is understandable, because most Labradoodles are a first generation cross between a Labrador Retriever and a Poodle, and these two dogs have quite different-looking tails! It should be: Very thick at the base, gradually tapering toward the tip. Medium length. Covered in short, dense fur and free from feathering. Set at the same height as the end of their back, so the top line is a continuous horizontal line. Carried horizontally — not curled over the back. Set high up and carried vertically. Shaved at the base, with a pompon of fur at the tip. And the answer is that the bone structure of the tail is likely to be straight, but the fur on it is likely to be curly! However, some Labradoodles are born with short, straight hair like a Labrador. Do people dock Labradoodle tails? Tail docking is traditional in some working dogs, including Poodles, to protect them from tail injuries. Since the AKC breed standard for show Poodles reflects this working tradition, it has also become commonplace to dock Poodles who will never work a day in their lives. However, docking is gradually falling out of favor for pet dogs, and several animal welfare organisations have specifically called for an end to it altogether. Since most Labradoodles are kept as purely pets, it is unusual to dock their tails. The Worldwide Australian Labradoodle Association specifically says that the Australian Labradoodle tail should not be docked. Here are some Labradoodle tail problems to be aware of: Color dilution alopecia Color dilution alopecia is when the hair follicles of dogs with dilute coats self destruct, leaving bald patches. The dilute Labradoodle colors are blue, silver beige, and silver. You may need to take extra care of the exposed skin to prevent it getting dry, scaly, itchy or broken. Skin problems Dogs with dermatitis, flea bite allergies, or any other skin condition can be equally affected on the skin on their tails. But since the skin is relatively tight over their tail compared to the rest of their body, if splits or breaks it can take longer for the wound to close up again. Fractures All dogs with a full tail are at risk of fractures or tissue damage through exercise, roughhousing with other dogs, or even wagging their tail too hard into a door frame or piece of furniture. You should always take them to see a vet if you suspect this has happened. Dogs with long wavy, fleecy or curly coats can get fecal matter trapped in the fur around the base of their tail. This unpleasant problem can be cleaned up with grooming wipes bought online or from the pet store. Dried-on poop may need to be gently cut away with blunt-ended scissors. It is traditionally associated with swimming in cold water, but it can also be triggered by being kept in a too-small crate, high latitudes, and underlying genetic susceptibility. Tails with limber tail are stiff at the base, and limp along the rest of their length. Affected dogs are likely to show signs of pain walking, sitting, and toileting. Their vet can prescribe painkillers and anti-inflammatories to help them get better quickly. In between clips it needs to be brushed all the way down to the roots every day or so. This lifts out dirt and debris, and prevents matts forming at the base of the hair, which tug painfully and even interfere with blood circulation underneath the skin. Medium stop, length from nose to eyes should be only slightly longer than length from eyes to occiput. Skull should be slightly rounded but not domed. Forehead medium breadth, muzzle not snipey, but should have depth and breadth. Weak underjaw is a fault. Expression to be lively, curious, wise, full of fun and with an intuitive expression, seeking contact with human eyes. A sharp, piercing or expressionless eye is a serious fault. Eye colors can be darkest brown, a transparent honey color, or shades of hazel. Protruding eyes, sunken or watery eyes are a fault. Odd colored eyes each a different color to the other is a serious fault. Marble eyes such as are found in Blue Merle dogs is a serious fault. A feature of the eyes is their very long eyelashes which should never be cut. Ears: Low on the head and can not stick up or out. Leather should be of medium thickness, and leather should not hang below the lower lip line. Excessive hair in the ear canal is undesirable. Upper teeth to just overlap the bottom teeth. Gaps between upper and lower teeth are a fault. Undershot mouths where the lower teeth extend beyond the upper teeth are a fault. Overshot mouths where the upper teeth extend beyond the lower teeth are a fault. Level bite, where the biting edges of teeth meet but do not overlap are a fault but not a serious fault. Crowded teeth in the adult dog are a fault especially in Miniatures. A definite feature. Large square and fleshy in appearance. Must never be small, pinched, narrow or pointed. Elbows are set close to the body. Forelegs to be straight when viewed from the front. Toeing in our out is a fault. Deep chest and well sprung. There should be a good tuck up. Loins should be strong and muscular. Level top line, strong over loins and slightly sloping croup and with sloping shoulders flowing into firm elbows and front legs straight to the ground. Straight upright shoulders are a fault as are straight stifles. Stifles should have medium angulation and be long, with short strong hocks parallel and straight to the ground. View from the rear should be parallel to each other, must not be cow-hocked. The feet should not turn in or out. Front dewclaws may be removed although it is not necessary. It is rare for an Australian Labradoodle to have hind dewclaws but if puppies are born with them they must be removed at four days old. It may be carried gaily, but should not curl completely over the back. Tip of tail should not touch the back nor curl upon itself. But during the formative years of this breed the tail may be carried gaily and swirling over the back. Tightly curled teapot tails are a fault. Kinked tails are a fault. Tails must not be docked. Light, lithe, graceful and athletic. Looking like they are dancing and ballerina-like in motion. When galloping, they should appear to float almost above the ground. Light and airy, flowing and free moving with a complete absence of apparent effort. Hair coats and Normal Fleece coat mix Examples of the different coat types. .Any coat length is acceptable but preferable not past 4 inches in length. The coat should be even over the entire body. It should be straight, wavy or forming spirals. It should not be too thick or dense, nor should it be fluffy or fuzzy. It should be a single coat. Any sign of an undercoat is a serious fault. Can range between a fleece to wool in texture. Extremely harsh hair is highly undesirable. A light trimming might be required with scissors but usually not. The hair coat is usually only seen with the first generation F1 Labradoodles. This coat usually requires trimming one-two times a year. The coat is always a single coat with a definite absence of fluffy undercoat. With the exception of the hormonal shedding, this should not shed itself out, but needs to be stripped out with grooming. Length is around four to six inches, on body, tail, head and face and on the legs. The Wavy Fleece Coat is the ultimate coat type. Straightish and only slightly wavy as puppies more curl develops until the coat is a long swinging curtain of loose slightly wavy tendrils. The Micro Fine Fleece Coat Supper soft and fine texture in wavy or spiralling coat is an allergy and asthma friendly coat, if kept well groomed. Colours of Chalk and Cream may have either pigmentation of dark amber to pale hazel-green eyes; liver noses, eye rims and lips; and self coloured to dark nails or very dark eyes; black noses, eye rims and lips; and black or self-coloured nails. A small white flash no larger than 2. Even colours are preferred but natural colouration of the coat is not considered a fault. No set pattern is required but symmetrical markings on the head are preferred. Freckling of the solid colour in the white of the coat is acceptable but not encouraged. Second colour in the inside of the leg and flank is also acceptable and should not be penalized. Markings are preferred to be clear and defined. Face markings of the second colour with the entire face coloured is acceptable, though not preferred, if the other required body markings are present. Any of the solid colours combination is acceptable. Pure bred Poodles do not come in merle. Coats must be fleece or wool Short or overly thick neck A coat, which sheds note: some coat instability during hormonal changes with fertile bitches Possum type or Teapot handle tails, minor fault A long narrow or block head Protruding or sunken eyes Over or undershot or pincer mouth Long Back Bad carriage or heavy gait Monorchid or inverted vulva. Dewclaw removal is most often performed in puppies around days of age to comply with specific breed standards or to prevent the loosely attached dewclaw from catching on furniture, carpet, etc. Some pets have dewclaws only on the front feet and some have dewclaws on all four feet. Some have multiple dewclaws. Dewclaw removal may also be performed in older dogs if the toe becomes injured or damaged. To avoid tail damage A number of working gundog breeds have to hunt game through heavy vegetation and thick brambles, where their fast tail action can easily lead to torn and bleeding tails which are painful and extremely difficult to treat. Docking the end of the tail eliminates the risk of injury. Working terriers are docked for the same reason. In addition, terriers which are bred to hunt below ground for purposes such as fox control, have their tails docked to a length which is more practical when working in a confined space. Other non-working breeds which have an enthusiastic tail action, are also liable to damage their tails, cause harm to small children, clear coffee tables in the home. For reasons of hygiene Long haired, thick coated breeds are docked to avoid the hair around the base of the tail becoming fouled by feces. Even with constant grooming and washing, such fouling is unpleasant. If allowed to get out of hand, it can lead to severe problems of hygiene, or even flystrike and subsequent infestation by maggots. Hygiene problems can be greatly reduced or eliminated altogether by docking. To maintain breed standards Breeds such as the Poodle, which have been docked over many generations have been selected for specific qualities of build and conformation, but not for tail length, shape or carriage. Is docking cruel? Docking is carried out when puppies are tiny. Their eyes are not yet open and long experience indicates that carried out correctly, the procedure causes no pain or discomfort. Indeed, some puppies which are docked whilst they are asleep, do not even wake up. After docking, puppies will immediately return to their dam to feed, and there is no evidence that development or weight gain is in any way arrested by the docking procedure. Nor does a dog which has been docked as a puppy have any problems with balance or communication. How is docking carried out? This effectively cuts off the blood supply to the end of the tail, which comes away within 3 days. Docking tails is a practice which has been carried out for centuries in order to avoid tail damage, for hygiene and other reasons. Today there are over fifty traditionally docked breeds which are recognized by various Kennel Clubs. Docking, they say, is a perfectly humane procedure when properly carried out, and one, which prevents far more distress than it causes. It is, like neutering, simply a practical animal management technique.

They will be able to look at your puppy as an individual case, and analyse their behavior properly. Do Adult German Shepherds Bite? The German Shepherd breed is known for being aggressive in some circumstances — they make popular guard dogs, and are number one candidates for working dog roles in the police and military. Since puppies lack the dexterity that you and I have, they use their mouths to explore the world around them. By understanding the behavior of biting itself, you can begin to see just how normal biting is in German Shepherd puppies. Just because biting is a normal behavior in a puppy does not mean we should tolerate it or promote it. Since biting is a form of communication for German Shepherd puppies, there are many things our puppies could be trying to say! So why do Shepherd pups bite? Puppies often communicate with their siblings through biting and pawing, especially when they are trying to incite a play session. Your pup may gnaw on your hand as if it were a chew toy, especially when you are a moving target. Puppies play and bite their siblings from the moment they are old enough to do so. This is why the behavior is so common, and why our Shepherd pupswill need to learn how to transition to playing with appropriate chewing options. Not only are our hands and feet tempting enough, but even more so when a puppy has a high prey drive. A prey drive is an ingrained need to chase after moving objects, whether it is appropriate or not. A swinging hand as we walk by can be extremely tempting for a growing pup, causing them to jump up and nip. If it seems like your Shepherd puppy is always biting you when you are in motion, it may be due to their high prey drive! They Are Curious As we mentioned above, German Shepherd puppies use their mouth to explore the world around them. Biting can help them examine and understand an object, and our hands and feet can fall into that category as well! If you catch your puppy gnawing on everything around your home, it may be their curiosity getting the best of them! A dog quickly learns what behavior gets a reaction, causing them to do it over and over again. Even if their bites result in a negative reaction from you, it still counts as attention. They Are Teething Similar to teething babies, a German Shepherd puppy experiences teething pain as well. If your Shepherd pup seems to find relief when chewing on objects, they may be biting you due to teething discomfort. They Are Herding You If your German Shepherd puppy is constantly biting at your ankles, they may be displaying some herding behaviors. German Shepherds are ingrained with a need to work, especially in dogs with a working bloodline. If your German Shepherd is always nipping at your feet, running to your side when you are moving, or showing signs of anxiety or frustration when you are moving around your home; it may be herding behavior. So how can you stop this normal puppy behavior? Redirect The Behavior One of the most effective ways to stop your German Shepherd puppy from biting is by redirecting the behavior. An effective distraction is a wonderful way to end the behavior without punishment, and show them how much fun the alternative to biting can be. The next time your Shepherd pup is displaying undesirable nipping, try to pull out their favorite toy. Since this will need to be a toy that your dog enjoys, be sure to offer them the option that they find most exciting. This can be a Kong toy , rope, bone, or any other chewing option that your dog loves. By doing this each time your Shepherd puppy begins to bite you, they will begin to understand that they would much rather play with an acceptable chew option. Having a variety of chew toys can alleviate their need to bite our hands and feet, and offer them the relief they seek in this uncomfortable transition. There are so many toys created for teething puppies, that it should be easy to fill your home with plenty of appropriate options. One of our favorite chew toys is the Kong Teething Binkie. Any attention can validate the behavior, causing them to make it a habit. This shows them that the behavior is unacceptable, and does not involve any harmful negative reinforcement. Our attention is important to a puppy, and they do not want to be ignored. By showing them that biting will only result in us pulling away, they will learn to ditch the undesirable behavior. Interrupt The Behavior Sometimes a Shepherd puppy needs a sharp and sudden sound to pull them out of a bad habit. By giving a quick interrupter cue ouch, yip, eek , you can pull your puppy away from the action and gain their attention. Because of this, it is so important to offer plenty of mental and physical activities throughout your home. For example, if your puppy nips at strangers each time they walk in the door, it may be best to limit their time around the guest and send them to a separate play area. Once they begin to understand that biting is unacceptable, you can refrain from using their separate play area as often. Similar to what we discussed above about being proactive, a separate play area can help them calm down and collect themselves. Once your German Shepherd puppy begins to mature and understand that biting is unacceptable, they should require less time away. Just as there are effective methods in canine training, there are counterproductive actions as well. Do Not Hit Or Yell Since biting is a normal behavior that puppies must learn to grow out of, it is not productive to hit or yell at your puppy when they bite. Doing this can show them from a young age that interaction with you results in something negative, and can hinder your training process. By using other distractions and training methods when they bite, you can turn every bite into a learning experience for your pup! This can seem like a fun game to your pup, and can actually encourage the behavior. Try your best to go limp when they bite you, and pull your attention away from the pup. By doing this, you show them that this behavior does not offer them any extra fun. Extra attention can validate their undesirable behavior, making it challenging to break. Try your best to refrain from reacting to a bite outside of your interrupter cue, and pull your attention away from your furry friend afterward. Biting is a normal behavior in puppies of all kinds. Puppies begin to bite their siblings from the moment they can move, and will continue this behavior until they learn otherwise. A biting German Shepherd puppy is to be expected, and should not result in any discouragement on your part. As long as you are following the tips we mentioned above, your puppy should shy away from this behavior in no time! Biting in puppies is not usually a sign of aggression. Mild biting is usually a form of play, and should be easily corrected. However, there are some rare cases where biting in German Shepherd puppies is a sign of something more. If your pup is displaying any snarling, growling, ears pinned back, stiff posture, or any other signs of canine aggression, your pup may be biting in reaction to fear or pain. If you are unable to make any progress within a month of implementing the tips we discussed above, it may be time to contact a dog trainer. A trainer can not only help your pup refrain from biting, but offer other obedience training as well.
