Provides DHA from fish oil for healthy brain and eye development Promotes regular and healthy stools with the special blend of prebiotics Gentle of small stomachs Not suitable for pups with a maize or gluten allergy or intolerance FAQs How much food does a French Bulldog puppy need? The amount of food your Frenchie puppy needs depends on how much your pup weighs, and whether you're opting to give them a wet puppy food or dry food diet. Every type of food will have its own feeding guidelines so you can use these to figure out how much food they should have compared to how much they weigh. When they get to six months, increase their food intake to up to two and a half cups daily, but only feed them two times a day. Frenchies are prone to obesity, so it's important to keep an eye on their weight. If you start to notice your pup is piling on the pounds more than they should for their age, you should reduce their portion size by half a cup. If you have any concerns about your pup's weight, speak to your vet. Can French Bulldog puppies have allergies? Allergies are a common problem with French Bulldogs. These can be genetic, but they can also be food-based. They can usually get acne that causes sores or dry, flaky patches on their body. If you spot your Frenchie pup excessively and constantly scratching, chewing or biting at their legs, paws, face, sides or their behind, it could be a sign they have an allergy. We suggest eliminating or isolating certain ingredients in their diet to find out the trigger, which can be a little trial and error. You can then opt to feed them puppy foods for sensitive stomachs as these are typically made without ingredients that dogs are commonly allergic or intolerant to. We would also recommend collaborating with your vet to find the best food for your French Bulldog puppy. Although French Bulldogs look very different from their wolf ancestors, their digestive systems remain much the same. They are equipped with sharp teeth, a short digestive tract and a body evolved to metabolise protein and fat from meat. Finding the best food for your French Bulldog can be a minefield. At ACANA we keep it simple with our Biologically Appropriate philosophy — mirror the quantity, freshness, and variety of meat that nature evolved dogs and cats to eat. In nature, there are no synthetic food supplements, and wolves and wildcats derive their nutritional needs by consuming prey animals; muscle meat provides protein, liver, kidney and tripe supply vitamins and minerals, and cartilage and bone deliver calcium and phosphorus. In her infinite wisdom, Mother Nature matched the nutrients in whole fish, fowl, and game to perfectly meet the dietary needs of dogs. When looking for the best food for a French Bulldog, you should look to match those dietary needs. Our WholePrey foods precisely mirror the natural diet, incorporating meat, organs, and cartilage or bone in ratios that deliver nutrients naturally and completely, without the need for long lists of synthetic ingredients. When looking to find the best food for a French Bulldog, we recommend looking at the ingredients. These should be clearly displayed on the packaging of all pet food products. Asking three questions will help you compare the foods. How much? That means your Frenchie will be getting enough animal protein and fat to help them maintain strong bones and muscles. How Fresh? By fresh we mean meat preserved by refrigeration only, without artificial preservatives or chemicals. You may be surprised to find most commercial pet foods do not contain any fresh meat at all, instead favouring cheaper alternatives that may have lost some of their nutrients. These are very different things. How Many? A good dog food will also include a variety of meats from different animals unless you are feeding one specifically formulated with one protein source for sensitivities. ACANA provides the flavours and goodness that all dogs instinctively crave! Champion Petfoods is an award-winning pet food maker with a reputation of trust spanning more than a quarter century. Special Health Considerations French bulldogs are incredibly popular pet dogs today, but they also have some serious health issues. This structural feature causes breaking problems and issues with chewing and swallowing. Here are some important criteria when selecting the best dog food for French bulldog puppies: Food allergies. French bulldogs can be prone to allergies. Grain-free whole foods free from artificial ingredients or fillers can lower the risk of feeding allergies. Because of their breathing issues, French bulldogs are low energy dogs in general, so avoid foods overly high in fat and be sure to control portion size. Combination of dry and wet food. Frenchies will have an easier time eating soft wet foods but they also need the hard, dry kibble to help keep their crowded teeth clean. Meal length and food availability. For puppies, it is not uncommon for your Frenchie to eat a bit, go wander around and then come back to finish eating. This may be just to have time to breathe. So be sure to leave the food out for at least 30 minutes before removing it. Kibble size and shape. Bigger kibble and odd-shaped kibble can be easier for the Frenchie to grasp and chew. It naturally helps to make sure that your pup staying hydrated. Wet food tends to be very appealing to dogs of all ages. It comes in several recipes to get your French bulldog puppy used to different tastes and textures right from the start. It is easier to store and often cheaper than wet or canned food. Grain free foods may be easier for your dog to digest. And for a small dog, this can be a big concern. It features real whole protein as the number one ingredient. This is a particularly good choice for Frenchie puppies because it is a combination of regular kibble with LifeSource vitamin and mineral bits that are odd-shaped. This makes picking up the kibble easier overall. And food allergies can be a concern with any breed. If that is the case with your Frenchie pup, you might try them out with some of these options. Like all things in life, breeding for health is simply a matter of priority. We are blind to many of the breed priorities that distract other breeders from improving the health of the English Bulldog. We focus on health and personality and very little else. We are not interested in winning a blue ribbon in the show ring. Rather, we test for things like elongated soft palates, narrow tracheas, stenotic nares, luxation in the patellar tendons, heart defects, cherry eye, optic cilia, entropion, ect. We focus and prioritize creating healthy bloodlines, therefore our bulldogs are typically much healthier than the breed as a whole. After breeding for health, what other priorities are you focused on? Our true desire is to create the perfect family bulldog. We also believe a bulldog bred for the correct personality is essential to the family unit as well. A Bruiser Bulldog is bred for intelligence and playfulness. We want our bulldogs to be full of personality and some quirk. We believe a full personality along with a little stubbornness is the true North star of the bulldog breed and is what makes the unique among other breeds. We look for these personality traits in our adult bulldogs and continue to create bloodlines that reflect these qualities. What are the steps of your adoption process if I am located in Nebraska? I am familiar with common and uncommon health problems they may face so when my boyfriend and I decided we were ready to adopt our own english puppy finding a reputable breeder that prioritizes health was most important to us. Erica and Mitch of Bruiser Bulldogs are just that. They are experienced, ethical and quality breeders. I was referred to them by my friend that I trust after I saw their gorgeous healthy puppy. Our Puppy Primrose is the light of our lives! Bruisers was there to assist us every step of the way. We would highly recommend Bruisers Bulldogs to anyone looking for their own happy, healthy pup! Leah H. We were lucky to have come across Bruiser Bulldogs and even more so the fact that they were near our family and hometown made it even better. We have had Clementine Callie for four months now, and she is a wonderful dog. Her personality is amazing, and I think part of it is breeding and the other part is Erika and her family lovingly raising the puppies in their home with plenty of attention and snuggles. I also was impressed that, rather than send the puppies out right at 8 weeks, Erika kept ours for a few extra weeks because she was tiny and not read to leave her mom yet. It's that care that differentiates Bruisers from other breeders. Emily R. Erica was easy to work with thru the entire process from application to adopting and now beyond as we host our new family member, Chief. Her on-call support and willingness to provide open, honest advice to all of our questions and concerns continues to be appreciated. We would highly recommend Bruiser Bulldogs to anyone looking for an English Bulldog to join their family. Elizabeth W. Lady L. They are experienced, responsive and knowledgeable about all things bulldog related. They went above and beyond for us and are truly dedicated to all of their pups! We love our little girl so much and would recommend Bruiser to anyone looking for a healthy beautiful bully. Jonathan E. Erica and Mitch are trustworthy, excellent communicators, fair, passionate, and produce the best bulldogs. We were at the top of the waiting list for months and Erica reached out every litter to see if we were finally ready for a bulldog. When we were, she was very easy to work with. Her knowledge on bulldogs is outstanding. We had many questions on the process and she always knew what was best for the puppy. We've had Penny formerly Blair for two months and she is very healthy, energetic, playful, and sweet. She is great with other people and dogs. We are so happy with our pup. When we are ready for bulldog 2, we will only consider Bruiser Bulldogs. Mitch C. Bowser was born April and is an integral part of our family. When we were first exploring English Bulldog breeders our biggest concern was the overall health of the dogs. We decided to work with Erica at Bruiser Bulldogs because we liked their focus on improving the breeds breathing abilities and the fact that the puppies are raised within her family environment before coming home with their new owners. Bowser also breaths clearly and our vet was impressed with his overall health from the moment we brought him home. All that said we know English Bulldogs have a predisposition to many health issues and that his current health can not predict the future. With that In mind its important to start with a breeder that open to answer any of your questions as Erica has ours, and that strongly believes in improving the breeds overall health profile. Adam B. My sister ended up finding Bruiser Bulldogs and we knew right away that they were the breeder for us. In September we ended up driving 9 hours to pick up two Bruiser bulldog puppies- one for my husband and I and one for my mom. Jackson and Penelope have been nothing but a joy. They are both very athletic and healthy. They are also HUGE snugglers and always want to be with you. It is an absolute pleasure having these two bullies in our lives! Erica is very knowledgeable about the breed. She is very hands on throughout the process and is just overall a kind and honest person to work with. With all that being said I cannot recommend Bruiser Bulldogs enough! Collyn C. One of the reasons we chose Bruiser Bulldogs was due to the claims about breeding for health. During our first visit at our vet's office, he told us that our pup was one of the healthiest English bulldogs he had ever seen. He is healthy, happy and social. Would recommend to anyone. Christina S. We seen our dog on their website and sent them an Email. Mitch called us and personally walked us through the process and made sure we had the right dog for our family. We couldn't be happier when we picked up our dog Ramsey, Erica made sure we had everything we needed and then some. They are truly amazing people who breed truly amazing dogs! Jim T. Puppy pads Create a Schedule Golden Retriever pups would do well with a schedule. Dogs live with a routine, and they are easy to train by having one. For this reason, make a schedule of the things you need to do regularly. Eventually, your pup will learn the routine events and will make itself adept at them. It will help you prepare for your pet, especially in the first few days of living together. As you allow your pet to adjust, do your best to create a stress-free environment for it. Always supervise it as it familiarizes itself with its new home. It can even grow louder as they age. Moderate Training Golden Retrievers responds well, especially to positive reinforcement. Squeaky Toys Out of all toys, your pet will love the squeaky ones. For this reason, prepare for a lot of loud squeaks every time your pet is active. Thus, in picking your pet, you may want to consider getting it from the best. Tells you any health problems A good breeder will tell you any significant health problems in any of the dogs he or she bred. Asks more questions than you A good breeder would ask for more items from you than you would for him or her. Not in a hurry to send off A good breeder is not in a hurry to send the puppies off and get your money. He or she will even show you other breeders and veterinarians caring for their dogs. Requires expectations on both sides A good breeder will create a contract that offers not only what he or she expects from you. More than that, he or she will also show what you can expect from him or her. Sends puppies properly A good breeder will never send a puppy in a compartment and without any responsible person to go with it. Works only with one or two breeds A good breeder works only with a single or a couple of species. Shows breeding experience A good breeder shows her dogs in recognized confirmation shows. He or she will also join his or her breed in other breed-related performance events. Other states. Use tab to navigate through the menu items. This breed has a muscular and robust size, aside from being a large and long dog, since both its parent breeds tend to be so. Applies to all dog food recalls in the U. They have a straight and extremely dense coat which sheds quite a bit, so daily brushing is a prerequisite. Their fur is also medium in length, and the colors may vary between black, white, fawn, and other similar shades. The breed can also develop a mane-like ruff around its neck area which will have a curly or wavy texture. Their eyes are almond-shaped and colored dark brown. Its nose, along with the eye rims and lips, is colored black, creating an expression that makes them look intelligent and eager to learn. Their ears can either be erect or drop, depending on which parent trait is more evident. Its head will be wedge-shaped and is well-proportioned to its body. But to counter this, you will need to train them consistently with much patience. The dog will likely want to be tasked with something whether it be guarding or protecting your kids, or helping you herd the family cat. American Kennel Club German Shepherd Great Pyrenees Mix Puppies For Sale Before you start looking for hybrid puppies on sale online, it is advisable to conduct a research first regarding the German Shepherd Great Pyrenees mix because it will allow you to form coherent and essential questions for when you talk to a breeder. You can find Germanees in your local dog shelter, but if you prefer raising one from scratch, the other option is to talk to a breeder. Make sure that the breeder you found is a reputable one. A trustworthy breeder will supply you with the complete documents of the hybrid parents, which includes their medical history. If a breeder fails to show you these kinds of records, then it is time to find a new one because the chances are that the hybrid puppy has many medical risks. Meeting the breeder personally, along with the dog, will help you assess your compatibility with the puppy. Moreover, you can ask the breeder essential questions regarding the upbringing of the puppy. If you still wish to purchase puppies online, below is a list of online sites that offer various dog breeds and crossbreeds: LancasterPuppies. Grooming Your German Shepherd Great Pyrenees Hybrid Your hybrid can possess a thick coat, and if it does, you will have to regularly check their ears because the fur may block air flow in that area. Too much moisture and dirt accumulation is a prerequisite for an infection so make sure that you brush your dog daily to avoid tangling in their coat. Doing so can also lessen loose clumps of fur. When the shedding is particularly heavy at times, you can opt to use a de-shedding tool. You will also have to trim excess hair around their eyes, ears, and legs to keep them comfortable. A bath now and then is also recommended, but extra caution is needed because the German Shepherd parent may have a history of skin issues. Since the dog has an active temperament, the nails should also be checked for breakage and brittleness. Their teeth will need to be brushed a few times in a week. Here are some recommended accessories you might need in taking care of your dog: Pin brush Deshedder Nail clipper If you are not confident enough, you can also opt to take your dog to pet salons where they can socialize with other dogs. Expert pet groomers will also be better equipped in taking care of your dog since they know what they are dealing with. German Shepherd Great Pyrenees Cross Health Problems While all breeds are susceptible to develop health problems brought about by their genetic upbringing, some races are more vulnerable than others. One of the ways you can avoid this is by buying or adopting a puppy instead of a grown dog. The breeder from whom you got your puppy must offer you a health guarantee on the puppies. If they failed to do this, then it might be time for you to look for another certified breeder. A breeder with a good reputation will be honest about the health problems that the breed of your puppy may be exposed to as well as the statistics of how often they occur. Health clearances exist as a way to prove that your dog has been subjected to tests for a particular condition and has passed it. Remember not to purchase a puppy who cannot provide you with proper documentation that the parent breeds were cleared of possible health problems that might affect the crossbreed in the future. One of the most common problems that a German Shepherd Great Pyrenees cross may face is hip and elbow dysplasia. This can be prevented with frequent trips to the veterinary clinic for early detection. Another issue to look out for is obesity. You can keep your dog occupied by meeting their daily requirement exercise. Consulting a veterinarian for the best diet course can also help your dog prevent obesity. It is also advisable that they undergo random tests like x-rays, eye examination, fecal examination, urinalysis, complete blood count, skin biopsy, buccal mucosal bleeding time, and skin scrape. This is to ensure and monitor that your dog is at its healthiest peak. Dogs have different dietary requirements from others. Since this breed is prone to obesity, it is best not to overfeed them. Obesity can lead to worse health conditions like hip and elbow dysplasia. This can be prevented by training your dog to get used to foods that are rich in fish oil, glucosamine, and chondroitin. Another course of action is by feeding them with using the Raw Food Diet. To get you started, we recommend you take a look at our comprehensive guides on what constitutes the worst dry dog food and what makes the best dry dog food. While these brands have good reviews and are popular in the market, it is still best to consult your local veterinarian for the best diet regime you can subject your dog to. Due to its Great Pyrenees parentage, the hybrid might possess stubborn tendencies, but his eagerness to learn new traits can overrule that. Its craving for work can be fulfilled by subjecting him to activities that will involve a class or a task at hand. Dog parks can be a good site for this, not to mention that it is also a place to help your dog socialize with others. Experts also suggest using consistency in his training to absorb the lessons better. Being a highly active dog, daily walks are a must. Check the weather and schedule your exercises during cooler times of the day since cold is more favorable for the hybrid. A backyard can also be a perfect place for your dog to play, make sure that you keep them company and that there is plenty of shade outside. The recommended daily minutes of activity is at least 60 minutes while the walk must have at least a 14 miles weekly mileage. Great Pyrenees German Shepherd Hybrid Training Training them at an early age can help your dog be the best they can be. The best type of training you can subject your dog to are obedience, agility, consistency training. Agility dogs must be able to walk by your right and left side. You can present them with rewards if they are behaving significantly. Teaching your dog to turn around a cone or barrel can prepare them for over and between jumps in the future. Moving Items. You can start by encouraging your pet to merely look at the item first and slowly let them build up to standing on the item by themselves. This is one of the most natural training which you can set up in your home using two chairs and a pole. Keep the pole at a low jump height first and make sure that the practice surface is not slippery. Also, make sure that the pole can topple once your dog hits it so that your dog would not get hurt during training. Agility training is suitable for all breeds of dogs, especially those who are anxious since it helps in building confidence and trust. It also introduces them to new experiences. Remember that positive reinforcement such as treats and praises will significantly assist in instilling lessons to your dog. The Great Pyrenees, on the other hand, is a sweet and gentle breed. The hybrid is also very loyal and protective to family members. As for other house pets, they will have no problem living under the same roof. Since the hybrid also has herding tendencies, it might play around with other house pets. However, constant training, socialization, and patience are still needed in raising this hybrid. References: Ritt, Mg, and Tw Fossum. Cunliffe, Juliette. Great Pyrenees. Kennel Club Books, .Coile, D. German Shepherds for Dummies. Hungry Minds, .If a Great Pyrenees Mix takes after their Pyr parent, they will be a large, powerful, and intelligent dog that is loyal and affectionate with their families. They will also be protective of them. Great Pyrenees tend to have a calm and patient nature. Although they are a serious, focused, and independent working dog, they often have a sweet, gentle, and affectionate personality with their families. They tend to get along well with children and other pets and tend to take on a guardian role. Their protective instinct makes them wary of strangers, but they will open up once introduced as long as they have been properly socialized. If the other parent breed has a similar temperament, then you should be able to expect something similar from a Great Pyrenees Mix. In addition to talking to the breeder about the other parent breed, you can also meet the mother in person. This allows you to see what her temperament is like and what behavior she is modeling for her puppies. The breeder should have started some socialization and training, but it is up to you to continue to train and socialize a puppy once you get them home. A Great Pyrenees is a moderately adaptable dog. They are built to roam and wander, so do best in homes with fenced yards. They do well in the cold, but are sensitive to heat. Although they are one of the most independent dog breeds and can handle some alone time, they may become bored and destructive if left alone for too long. The other parent breed will introduce their own quirks and traits that may affect adaptability, so you do want to ask the breeder about them. You also want to be aware of any potential quirks you should be prepared for in a Great Pyrenees Mix. Just as they could inherit none of the conditions common to their parents, they could inherit some or all of them. Good breeding practices make a huge difference. From the Pyr side, potential health conditions to be aware of in a Great Pyrenees Mix include patellar luxation, elbow dysplasia, hip dysplasia, eye conditions, and some types of cancer. Reputable breeders will screen their dogs to avoid passing issues to puppies, so make sure you ask about the health and genetic history of both of the parents. As a large dog breed, the Great Pyrenees can be at risk for bloat, which means a Great Pyrenees Mix may also be at risk for bloat in dogs. A Great Pyrenees is an independent work dog that is used to making their own decisions and working without guidance. Because of this, they are a better fit for experienced owners. Even if the other parent breed is a good fit for first-time dog owners, you need to be prepared for the potential of a Great Pyrenees Mix that may be a challenge to train. Being prepared to enroll in puppy training classes and to enlist the help of a professional trainer is a good idea with this mix. A Great Pyrenees Mix can inherit a coat similar to one of their parents or one that is a mix of both. If they inherit a Pyr coat, they will shed year-round and more heavily when seasons change. Weekly brushing, brushing a few times a week during seasonal shedding, and the occasional bath are enough to keep a Pyr coat healthy. Nail trims once or twice monthly are usually enough to keep them from growing too long. Ear checks weekly with careful cleanings as needed can help prevent ear infections. Brushing teeth or using an enzyme toothpaste daily along with cleanings at the vet when needed can help prevent dental disease later in life. The Great Pyrenees may be a working dog and need a job to do, but they sit in a more moderate activity range. Daily walks plus some activity to get them moving are usually enough. If the other parent breed has a higher or lower activity range, you will need to be prepared for that potential range in a Great Pyrenees Mix. A fully-grown Great Pyrenees usually stands inches tall and weighs pounds. The other parent breed can have a big effect on this, especially if they are the mother. Great Pyrenees generally live for years. Although the other parent breed may affect this slightly, you should be able to expect a similar average life span from a Great Pyrenees Mix. We even have to be very cautious with our friends and family visiting. On the day of your visit please do not have any contact with other puppies or unvaccinated dogs before you visit our home. Thank you for understanding and respecting our policy and we look forward to meeting you! Buyer Beware It is very concerning and heartbreaking to find so many puppymills on the internet now. Please be aware that there are pet stores and websites advertising each breed of dog claiming to be a 'breeder directory' but they are actually puppymills. Just because a website has a lot of pictures does not mean that those pictures were not stolen from other breeders!! Puppymills are massive breeding facilities that only view dogs as commodities. Breeding dogs are housed in shockingly poor conditions and bred until they can no longer produce, with very little human contact and suffer from neglect, poor health, parasitic infestations, and horrific wounds because they are forced to live on their feces confined to small filthy cages. So many people own dogs that have come from puppymills and dont even realize it. Unfortunately puppymills are thriving on the internet because buyers are not aware that such cruelty exists. Making such a purchase does not "rescue" the puppy- it in fact condemns puppymill dogs to a life of torture. It is estimated that there are over 4 million dogs being bred in puppymills every single year! And this number is growing. The current laws are insufficient in protecting dogs and puppies from neglect and exploitation. We have been awarded. We raise high-quality Mini Labradoodles as well as a few other breeds. We also have partnered up with several other reputable breeders that raise mini labradoodle pups that meet our strict genetic criteria and testing. So we usually have a good selection of very high-quality puppies. View Our Available Puppies! F1B Mini Labradoodle Puppies are a second-generation cross or hybrid. Thes puppies are considered semi-hypoallergenic since they shed minimally. These puppies can be a good fit if a person that has mild pet allergies. Once F1B Mini Labradoodles reach 6 months old they require to be groomed once every 8 weeks or so to keep their fur healthy and to stop matting. Adult F1B Mini labradoodle dogs range in size from 14 inches in height and pounds in weight. The average life span is typically years of age. The F1BB puppies usually have curlier coats and will be totally hypoallergenic. Once the F1BB pup is 6 months they will need regular grooming every 6 to 8 weeks. F1BB Puppies are usually slightly smaller than F1B puppies and range from 12 inches in height and pounds in weight. Mini Labradoodles are known for their intelligence and the ability to be trained very easily. They make amazing family pets and love to participate in family activities like swimming, hiking, camping or just playing tag in the yard. The Multigenerational Goldendoodle Simply put, the multigen Goldendoodle is a dog resulting from breeding two Goldendoodles with several breeding lines of Goldendoodles. These dogs will come from parents who are Goldendoodles and have Goldendoodle grandparents. If any of their bloodline in the past two generations consists of a purebred Poodle or Golden Retriever, they cannot be under the multigenerational category. Goldendoodle sitting at the park quietly. Distinguishing a Multigen Goldendoodle Breeding hybrid dogs can be tricky, especially when exploring genetics and breeding lines. As a result, breeders will often refer to each generation with distinguishing terms to help identify and track the lines. F1: First Gen These dogs will resemble teddy bears with their long wavy coat of hair. This trait is often the most desirable feature of Goldendoodles for dog owners. However, depending on which traits stand out more with the parent, recessive genes will lessen with second gen Goldendoodles. A Goldendoodle sitting on the grass. F2B: Second Gen Backbreeding Breeders can use backbreeding methods to hone in on specific genetic lines with second generation dogs. Any offspring with an F1 and F1b parent will fall under this category. F3: Third Generation Breeding F2 parents will produce F3 Goldendoodles that will carry less distinct Poodle and Golden Retriever characteristics and offer a combination specific to the Goldendoodle. Third generations and beyond are typically the lower-shedding hybrids and ideal for allergy sufferers. Multigenerational Many breeders will consider any dog that uses F3 parents or higher a multigenerational Goldendoodle. As you can see, this multigen breeding process can be quite precise even when crossing breeds. How Multigen Breeding Is Beneficial? Many dog owners will want purebred animals to get the very best breeding lines possible in their animals. However, when creating hybrid breeds, breeders can tailor their breeding stock to help isolate specific traits and enhance favorable attributes to produce the offspring they desire. For example, some breeders may want to use an F1 Goldendoodle with a purebred Poodle to enhance the non-shedding coat traits. However, backbreeding makes it simple to revert to other genetic lines when aiming for specific attributes. Other breeders may focus on the Golden Retriever genes to produce a dog that carries the easy-going, fun-loving demeanor into the offspring. Although multigen breeding is not an exact science, and breeders may not know what the results will be until litters are born, it is possible to target desirable traits. For multigen Goldendoodles, the possibility of getting a straight or flat coat is almost impossible. This leaves the wavy or curly coat. The Wavy Coat Multigen Goldendoodles with wavy coat types are the most popular and highly sought-after coat types of the F3 Goldendoodle. The wavy coat appears more fluffy than the other coat types which gives them an overall teddy bear look that most doodle lovers are attracted to. The wavy or shaggy coat also comes with other benefits. They are generally regarded as low to minimal-shedding dogs and are generally classified as hypoallergenic dogs. Their wavy coats do have a tendency to get tangled which prevents them from shedding easily. Grooming should be easier for the wavy or shaggy multigen Goldendoodle, as the coat type requires less grooming than the other coat type associated with the multigen Goldendoodle. The Curly Coat The second coat type that is attributed to the multigen Goldendoodle is the curly coat type. Curly coat multigen Goldendoodles are the second most popular Goldendoodles when looking at the overall Goldendoodle coats. Its appearance is more identical to the Poodle parent than the Golden Retriever parent. When it comes to shedding propensity, the curly multigen Goldendoodle is low to shedding. In fact, it is the most hypoallergenic coat of all Goldendoodle coat types. This is because of its long coat hair which easily tangles and makes it difficult to shed. When it comes to grooming, you might need to groom the multigen Goldendoodle with the curly coat frequently as the tangled hair might cause some mild troubles for the Goldendoodle. Are Multigen Goldendoodles Healthy? With all that has been said so far about the multigen Goldendoodle, just how healthy are they? Before getting into that, we have to discuss the average lifespan of the Goldendoodle. How long do multigen Goldendoodles live? Well, on average you should expect your Goldendoodle to live as long as 10 to 15 years. But this depends on a lot of factors. All Goldendoodles, not just the multigen Goldendoodles are susceptible to some health genetic defects that are passed down from their parent dog breeds, but the almost lack of hybrid vigor does increase the possibility of the multigen Goldendoodles suffering some of these health conditions more. Potential Health Issues Of The Multigen Goldendoodle When it comes to health issues or defects, Goldendoodles are the pinnacle of health as they are much stronger than and have a much more stable immune system than their breed parents. However, for multigen Goldendoodles, they are prone to a few health issues and defects, like any of the following; GDV- Gastric Dilatation Volvulus Although this mainly affects little dogs like the miniature, petite, and teacup sizes of the Goldendoodles, it also affects dogs that have been produced through multiple breedings like the 3rd generation or the multi-generation Goldendoodle. It is a deadly disorder that is caused by the pile-up of gas from eating heavy meals. It then forces the gut to swell and this can be incredibly painful for the Goldendoodle being affected. You would need to treat this disorder as an emergency and visit your local vet immediately if you notice any symptoms in your precious Multigen Goldendoodle. You should also be careful with what you feed your Goldendoodle. Avoid overfeeding them and ensure you provide them with the essential nutrients required at the particular age or stage they are at. Epilepsy Multigen Goldendoodles are also susceptible to health disorders like epilepsy. This can be passed down from both breeding parents and the lack of hybrid vigor further exposes the multigen Goldendoodle to the possibility of the disorder. Obvious signs of epilepsy in Goldendoodles include Issues with respiration, random seizures, bewilderment, and moving in spots. Proper breeding can help reduce the possibility of your Goldendoodle suffering from epilepsy. And if you do notice any of the symptoms listed above, do ensure you seek professional help and advice immediately. Do Multigen Goldendoodles Shed? Due to the fact that most multigen Goldendoodles are born with either a curly coat type or a wavy coat type, they are generally classified as low to minimal shedders. Are Multigen Goldendoodles Hypoallergenic? Yes, multigen Goldendoodles are generally hypoallergenic in nature. Their low shedding propensity makes them relatively safe to have around, especially if you or any family member is allergic to the dander located in certain dog coats. You should groom your multigen Goldendoodle regularly to get the best out of them. Their curly or wavy coat can quickly become tangled and this can cause some certain discomfort for the Goldendoodle. So ensure you brush their coat often and do some other grooming practices like teeth brushing, regular baths, and others. Multigen Goldendodle Price The price of a multigen Goldendoodle depends on a lot of factors like the type of breeder, the Goldendoodle coat pattern and color, rarity, and a host of other factors. The answer really depends on who you are, what you like, and if you suffer from any allergies to dog fur. One major reason why you might need a multigen Goldendoodle is its hypoallergenic coat. If you suffer from dog hair allergies, a high-shedding dog would be a terrible choice for you. The multigen Goldendoodle is a low-shedding dog that should be relatively safer for you. All Goldendoodles generally need lots of exercise to stay healthy and strong. As such, this might be the right dog for you if you are generally active or have an active family. All in all, it is essential that you get your Goldendoodle from a reputable breeder. This is why you should make personal research on each breeder before choosing to patronize or work with them. So ask the right questions and demand the right certifications from each breeder. Multigenerational Goldendoodles are rare designer dogs that make wonderful family companions. However, subsequent generations of crossbreed dogs lose some of the Hybrid Vigor qualities of the original F1 animal. Coat Types F1 Goldendoodles can have curly, straight , or wavy coats. Depending on which parent the puppy takes after, he might shed a little bit. The B refers to the backcross element of the breeding. So, the puppies should be non-shedding or very light-shedding. Coat Type F1B Goldendoodles usually have curly or wavy coats that are usually non-shedding. In fact, F1BB dogs are the lightest shedders of all the first-generation Goldendoodles. Although you still need to brush the silky, curly coat daily to prevent matting, F1BB dogs are the best choice for allergy sufferers and those who hate vacuuming! These crosses usually produce offspring similar to those of the F1 generation since their parentage is the same, being purebred Poodles and Golden Retrievers. Coat Type F2 Doodles have extremely variable, unpredictable coats that can be wavy, straight, or very curly. These dogs are usually called multigen Goldendoodles since they are third-generation offspring. F2BB puppies should inherit a certain degree of Hybrid Vigor, but not as much as earlier generations. Coat Type Usually, F3 multigen Goldendoodles have a curly coat. What Generation Should I Choose? By Jennifer Nelson There are many types of Goldendoodles that you can choose to bring home. The type will often depend on the parents and grandparents of the dog and how they were combined together to make the offspring. While the original Goldendoodle is a mixture of Poodle and Golden Retriever, it is possible that different combinations can be used in subsequent generations. This can help us get a multigene Goldendoodle. What are Multigen Goldendoodles? A multigene Goldendoodle is the product of breeding two Goldendoodles beyond their second generation F2. This means that both the parents and the grandparents of the new multiegene dog are also Goldendoodles. While it may vary, most breeders are going to consider any generation of F3 or beyond to be a multigene Goldendoodle. There are different breeding combinations that you can use to get to this type of Goldendoodle. The Goldendoodle is a mixture of a Poodle and a Golden Retriever. These two were put together with the hopes of producing a crossbreed that would have the high intelligence and the low shedding of a Poodle along with the sweet temperament of the Golden Retriever. This new designer dog is gaining in popularity and many families are finding how great the Goldendoodle will be for their needs. This dog is not only smart, loyal, affectionate, and friendly but they are a great addition to the family for those who have allergies. Because of the rise in popularity of this dog, there are now multigene, or multi-generational, Goldendoodles. This is the product of breeding two Goldendoodles beyond the second generation. Most breeders will consider the F3 generations and beyond to fall under the category of multigene. Various combinations of breeding can be used to help increase the likelihood of desired traits that. You would like in your Goldendoodle including a coat that is less likely to shed for those who have serious allergies. What are the Benefits of a Multi-Generational Goldendoodle? Many of the multi-generational Goldendoodles are going to have more of the Golden Retriever in their bloodline compared to their parents, which means that they are more likely to be closer to the Retriever rather than the Poodle. This can be a benefit to those who are more concerned with getting a dog that has a great personality rather than worrying about the appearance. Poodles are great dogs, but they are not as easy going and relaxed as the Retriever is. Adding more of the Golden Retriever into the mix can help produce a more enjoyable dog. However, since the dog is still mixed in with some of the Poodle genes, you get the benefit of low shedding and allergy free that you want with this kind of dog. They may shed more than some of the earlier versions of the Goldendoodle who have more of the Poodle in them, but their temperament can be a lot of fun. One of the drawbacks that can come with a multi-generational Goldendoodle is that the further that the generation gets from the original purebred breeds, the less of the hybrid vigor they will have. Hybrid vigor is going to be the overall good health that crossbred dogs are able to get. For example, there are certain types of cancer that will show up in a Golden Retriever. These are often not seen in multi-generational Goldendoodles. This hybrid vigor does not mean that the dog is never going to run into any health concerns. And if you use a low-quality breeder to help with some of this, then you could end up with more health conditions in the dog. It is important to be careful about the breeder and the dogs that you choose to get. Another question that some dog owners are going to look at with the multi-generational Goldendoodle is the type of coat they have. The exact coat they will get will depend on their parents and exactly how their breeding is set up to go. Some of the different types of coats that you are able to experience with this dog include: Wavy: This can show up in all generations of the Goldendoodle and it is pretty common in multigens. It is also known as the teddy bear coat and gives them a shaggy appearance. It is often low shedding. Curly coat: This is another common option out there and will consist of loose curls, tight curls, or sometimes curls that are in between. This is the lowest shedding of the coat and can look very similar to the Poodle. You will need to groom it well to keep it from matting up. Straight coat: This can happen thanks to the genes from the Golden Retriever, though it will often be fluffier. This is the easiest of the coat types to care for because it just needs a bit of brushing. It is also the one that is more likely to shed. This shows up when more of the Golden Retriever genes are present. While it is not that common thanks to the availability of DNA testing, there is one other possibility that can come up with the multigens and that is the improper or flat coat. Dogs that have this kind of coat are going to resemble the Golden Retriever and will shed quite a bit. They may also lack the long facial hair on the eyebrows, beard, and the mustaches. This type of hair is not that desirable in the Goldendoodle for a number of reasons. It sheds a lot, which is something that owners of Goldendoodles do not want, and it is not going to have the curly or wavy hair that often helps to show that the breed is a Goldendoodle. Thanks to DNA testing for the dogs, it is less likely to show up. What is the Best Generation of Goldendoodle? There are many types of generations when it comes to the Goldendoodle you would like to own. Some will choose one type over the other and it does depend on what you are looking for within the dog for which generation will be the best for you. Even if you get a dog within a certain generation, they are all unique and can bring their own something special to the table. Are Multigen Goldendoodles Better? This will depend on the type of dog that you would like. Many owners love this kind of dog and like the temperament that is friendly and very loyal. However, some prefer to go with a Goldendoodle that has more of the Poodle inside of it. It all depends on what you are looking for when you bring home a Goldendoodle puppy. The truth is that these Goldendoodles are going to be wonderful pets that have some of the special traits that seem to show up with them. They have a great personality and are adorable to look at. You will find though that all generations and varieties of the Goldendoodle can make great pets so any of them that you decide to add to your family will be a great decision. They are intelligent, affectionate, and very friendly, making them the perfect addition to any family. Choosing the Right Goldendoodle Generation As you are looking for a great Goldendoodle to add to your family, it is important to consider all the different types. Since this dog can be mixed together out of two breeds, there are many variations that come with it to make it truly extraordinary overall. Each one is amazing and brings something new to the table so you are sure to find the perfect breed for all of your needs. The Differences Between Goldendoodle Generations? Not all Goldendoodles are the same! While most have the cuddly, teddy bear, fluffy Doodle look, their genetics can vary greatly depending on their generation and what parents they have. So, what is a multigenerational goldendoodle? There can be significant differences between what breeders refer to as F1, F1B, F2, and multigenerational called multigens Goldendoodles. Knowing the distinction between the 4 types of Goldendoodles within this breed can help choose the breeder and desired traits you hope to find in your new Goldendoodle. What is GANA? This organization sets the standards and affirms that these generations are acceptable and contribute to the diversity of the Goldendoodle gene pool. The grading scheme definitions of each generation per the Goldendoodle Association of North America can be found here. Before diving into their differences, what does F mean? The number following the F signifies the generation of the Goldendoodle. For example, a first-generation Goldendoodle is bred from two non-Goldendoodle parents a Golden Retriever and a Poodle while a second-generation Goldendoodle is bred from two F1 Goldendoodle parents. Knowing these distinctions helps identify what traits can be expected in Goldendoodle litters. What are Goldendoodle Furnishings? A key element to discuss is the role that furnishing genes play in the looks and shedding factor of the different generations of Goldendoodles. The Golden Retriever carries zero furnishing genes and the Poodle carries two furnishing genes. Furnishing genes are responsible for the presence of hair that continues to grow in length most noticeable on the face and muzzle. Golden Retrievers have short, smooth hair on their face due to their lack of furnishing genes. Poodles, unless shaven, will have long hair covering the face and muzzle as a result of carrying two furnishing genes. Because furnishing genes are dominant, it takes just one copy of this gene to present in long hair on the face. However, two furnishing genes are necessary to facilitate a non-shedding coat. The curl genes involved in each generation will dictate the type of coat each puppy inherits. Golden Retrievers carry zero curl genes whereas Poodles carry two curl genes. All F1s will inherit a total of one copy of the curl gene allowing their coats to be wavy in general. For those puppies who inherit no curl genes, their coats will be straight to slightly wavy. More information and photos showing the different coat types can be found here. Perhaps a decade ago, testing for the number of furnishings and curl genes became accessible to breeders. Until that point, the only way to know if a breeder was producing high-shedding or flat-coated Goldendoodles was via trial and error. We now know that the curl and furnishing genes are unrelated and that the curl genes have no impact on the shedding factor. They are known for their friendliness, being the perfect family pet, and being great for first-time dog owners. They were bred with this very purpose in mind. Of course, their precious appearance helps too! The coats are typically wavy due to inheriting one curl gene from the Poodle and no curl genes from the Golden Retriever. F1 Goldendoodles benefit from hybrid vigor making them healthier than their purebred parents. F1 Goldendoodles have proven to have better longevity than their pure breed ancestors. This hybrid vigor comes from crossing two unrelated dog breeds. F1 Goldendoodles cannot be guaranteed to be non-shedding. F1 Goldendoodles can also come in smaller sizes. This allows smaller genes to affect the outcome of the size of the offspring. There is no way of knowing ahead of time how these two inherited traits will match up in any individual puppy. In the other F1B option of crossing an F1 Goldendoodle with a Golden Retriever, no puppies will inherit two curl genes and no puppies will inherit two furnishing genes. This pairing will likely produce higher shedding coats that will be straight or wavy. Additionally, the F1B Goldendoodle can also benefit from hybrid vigor. Under the healthiest and most cognizant of circumstances, these Goldendoodles can be healthier than their purebred parents. These benefits will only be fortuitous should your breeder be careful about choosing their breeding pairs utilizing health screening protocols. The hybrid vigor will not diminish if the breeder is thorough in health testing and ensures that the parent breed lines are uncrossed, meaning that the parents are unrelated. Like the other generations of Goldendoodles, the F1B generation is highly intelligent, easily trainable, and beautiful. They are created by crossing two F1 Goldendoodles. This generation requires careful selection of parents based on the traits desired in the offspring. Each puppy has equal chances of inheriting zero, one, or two furnishing genes as well as zero, one, or two curl genes. These genes can be inherited in any combination in a single puppy. Puppies inheriting two furnishing genes will likely be non-shedding. Puppies inheriting one furnishing gene will have reduced shedding most likely equal to an F1 Goldendoodle. Those inheriting no furnishing genes will have coats very similar to a Golden Retriever including a smooth face and moderate to heavy shedding. All three coat types are possible in the F2 generation as well — straight, wavy, or curly. Type means traits that all puppies in the same litter inherit eliminating the variety of possibilities within a single litter. Just as in the F2 generation, without careful selection of breeding pairs, a variation of furnishings and coat types can be created. In the multigen, breeders can begin to be more consistent as they can select breeding prospects using DNA to ensure two furnishing genes are present in both parents. This ensures all puppies will inherit two furnishing genes giving them a higher chance of being non-shedding and allergy friendly. The number following refers to how many generations of that breed have been produced from that specific line. These differences are important to understand to know what characteristics are possible in specific pairings. As you can see, not all Goldendoodles are the same! Each generation has its characteristics that are different based on their parents. Knowing the differences can help you choose which Goldendoodle is right for you and your family. It is important to know the breeder you have selected is knowledgeable about the genetics of each parent dog to be able to predict the traits that will be produced by crossing specific dogs together. You may not understand the genetic reports on each parent dog, but the breeder should be able to confidently explain them to you. Breeders that have not done DNA profiles on their breeding dogs before breeding them cannot begin to provide you with accurate predictions of the traits your future puppy may possess. These traits do not only include information on furnishings and coat types, but also diseases each parent may carry as well as the colors they are capable of producing. This certification includes the assurance that your Goldendoodle was produced ethically and is from healthy parents. Goldendoodles are well known for their amazing personalities and for being the perfect family dog. They are typically great with kids, extremely smart, and above all, endearing. No matter what their color or coat type may be, they are very hard to not love! Also, be sure to check with our Complete Goldendoodle Grooming Guide for other recommended supplies and a step-by-step lesson on properly grooming a Doodle. Many multi-generational Goldendoodles have a higher prevalence of Golden Retriever in their bloodline and can, therefore, more closely resemble a Retriever than a Poodle in terms of temperament. This is an advantage for people who are more concerned with personality than with appearance. You see, Poodles tend to be rather high strung and excitable, while Golden Retrievers are famous for their laid-back yet eager-to-please dispositions. So people searching for an easy-going, relaxed Goldendoodle generation usually gravitate toward a multigen. Often, breeders report that their multi-generational Goldendoodles are quite low shedding and are allergy friendly. Hybrid vigor refers to the overall good health enjoyed by crossbred dogs. For example, certain forms of cancer that often show up in Golden Retrievers are not typically seen in multi-generational Goldendoodles. However, hybrid vigor does not mean that the dog will never experience any health concerns at all. In this article , we go over a few conditions that are sometimes seen within this breed. Some low-quality breeders resort to intense inbreeding in order to produce multiple generations without having to keep different bloodlines and many dogs on their premises. Multigen Coat Types Because of the genetics at play in multigens, all three coat types are possible, each with its own unique set of qualities. Wavy Coat The soft, wavy coat can occur in all generations of Goldendoodles and is fairly common in multigens. Also called a teddy bear coat, the wavy coat has an irresistible shaggy appearance, hair-like texture, and is usually low shedding. Regular brushing is required to keep this coat tangle-free. Curly Coat The curly coat is also fairly common and can consist of loose curls, tight curls, or curls somewhere in between. Many owners choose to clip the coat to make grooming more manageable. Straight Coat The smooth straight coat resembles that of a Golden Retriever but is quite fluffy. This is the easiest coat type to care for as it only requires minimal brushing. Goldendoodles with a straight coat usually shed more than those with a wavy or curly coat and are therefore not as allergy friendly. Beware of this Coat Type Though no longer very common thanks to DNA testing, there is one other coat possibility with multigens — the improper, or flat, coat. Dogs with this coat type closely resemble a Golden Retriever, will shed rather heavily, and lack the long facial hair on the mustache, eyebrows, and beard. This undesirable coat can largely be avoided through testing for the IC gene in breeder dogs. What Is the Best Generation of Goldendoodle? The answer to this question depends on what you are looking for. Are you concerned with allergies and shedding? Consider an F1b or F2b. Want the healthiest cross with the most hybrid vigor? Want a low-maintenance coat? An F2 or F2b is your best bet. Looking for a Goldendoodle with a Retriever-like temperament? Consider a multigen F3 and beyond. Essentially, Goldendoodle generations explain how a puppy was bred and how much of their genetics are inherited from either of their lineage. This also means that breeders can use various types of Goldendoodles to achieve a certain outcome. What Is A Multigenerational Goldendoodle? So, what is a Multigen Goldendoodle? But, different breeders do interpret it differently. For instance, some breeders consider F2b Goldendoodles as Multigenerational Goldendoodles. By the way, F2b Goldendoodles can also be achieved through various routes. One of them has to be an F1b Goldendoodle or multigen. By that definition, F2b and F2bb Goldendoodles can also be considered as Multigenerational Goldendoodles. As you can see, there are various ways how breeders can create Multigenerational Goldendoodles. They could use either two F2 Goldendoodles, cross F1b Goldendoodles back to F1 Goldendoodles, or come up with a completely different combination instead. The possibilities are almost endless! At the end of the day, it ultimately depends on your preference and needs. You may also have to take into account that not all breeders specialize in all of the different generations. In fact, breeders usually specialize in one or two Goldendoodle generations. But going back to the topic, all Goldendoodle generations have their pros and cons that you should consider beforehand. In comparison, F1 Goldendoodles with a mix of both purebred parental breeds may lean on either side of the lineage. This comes with an added uncertainty, making it much more difficult to predict the outcome. Goldendoodles can be best described as friendly, affectionate, outgoing, and extremely smart. In addition to that, they tend to make friends everywhere they go, making them excellent pets for almost anyone. Coat Types Multigenerational Goldendoodles can inherit one of the three coat types seen in Goldendoodles — straight, wavy, and curly. Curly coats are often considered the best choice amongst the three, as these pups are usually very low to non-shedding, making them an excellent choice for people with allergies. Although they barely shed, they are also the most prone to matting. Doodle with a curly coat. On the other end of the spectrum we have straight coats that take most after the Golden Retriever parent. But even though straight-coated Goldendoodles generally come with a shedding undercoat, they tend to shed much less compared to their purebred Retriever parent. Doodle with a straight coat. And finally, Multigen Goldendoodles can also inherit a wavy coat that sits somewhere between the straight and curly. Doodle with wavy coat. Size There are three, even four size categories for Multigenerational Goldendoodles. Standard Goldendoodles are the largest of them all, whereas Toy Goldendoodles are the smallest of the bunch.
Here are some things to consider: Size Do you want a big or a small golden? Sex Do you want a male or a female? Style Or a stocky, blocky-headed golden retriever? Color Do you want a dark gold or red golden , a cream-colored golden , or something more in the middle? Personality Do you want a calm golden or more of an energetic one? Nobody will be able to tell you what you want out of a dog but yourself. Consider your lifestyle, home, whether or not you have kids , what you like to do on the weekend, etc. If you want to get a good feel for what a puppy will be like, look at their parents. Temperament and health are hereditary and no puppy test or observation will be as accurate as what their parents are like. So that being said, pick a good breeder that is breeding dogs that resemble what you want. There are two important things here: Talk to the breeder and tell them what you want Observe the puppies and look for the puppy that resembles what you want Talk To The Breeder The breeder has spent the last eight weeks with the puppies and knows them best. No matter how nice they seem or how attractive their website looks, you should always do a little bit of research before choosing a Golden Retriever breeder. Here are important points that all breeders should address: Image Source Does the breeder give back to the breed? Breed preservation should be the primary goal of Golden Retriever breeders. They should participate in keeping the species alive through membership at a Golden Retriever breed dog club, a performance club, or an obedience club. What type of experience does the breeder have? Do they stay true to the pure genetic traits of the breed? Do they provide health screenings and health guarantees? Can you meet the puppies and parents in person? How many litters do the females have each year? Female Golden Retrievers can have up to two litters per year. However, breeders who follow ethical practices will only allow the females to have four to six litters in their lifetime. A female can breed between the ages of two and eight. Once you choose a breeder that seems like a good fit for you and your family, you should write up some questions to ask them. And in return, expect some questions about you, your lifestyle, and your home! One of the first things any breeder you inquire about should provide is a list of former buyers. Reviews posted online are one thing, but being able to talk with customers directly speaks volumes about the legitimacy of the breeder. When you speak with their former customers, ask questions about their buying experience and how their dog is doing years after purchase. Puppies should receive some level of preventative care that is appropriate for their age. Newborn puppies up to eight weeks old should stay with their mothers, but they will also receive their first round of core vaccines during these few weeks. They should have a yearly examination by a licensed veterinarian that will perform vaccines, flea, tick, and heartworm prevention, as well as general health checkups. A reputable, passionate breeder will be more than happy to receive updates and questions about their puppies well into adulthood. With that being said, the breeder should also provide a health guarantee. A health guarantee states that you are not financially liable for any genetic issues in the puppy, as long as the health condition is verified by a certified veterinarian. This is an essential point that you might not think twice about. A good Golden Retriever breeder will ask questions to determine if your household is a good fit for their puppy. Image Source 1 Why do you want a dog? This is a simple yet important question that you should have an answer to. Golden Retriever breeders that dedicate their livelihood to continuing the pure genetic bloodline will want to know what appeals to you about these energetic companions. Additionally, the breeder might ask who will be walking, feeding, and playing with the dog. Golden Retriever puppies require tons of attention, especially during the first two years of their lives. If the breeder asks this, they want to know how your children will be participating in the handling of the puppy. They also want to understand how you plan to introduce the puppy to other pets so they can coexist safely within the same home. No matter how nice a breeder may seem, you want to avoid accidentally contributing to backyard breeders or a puppy mill disguised as a reputable breeder. Doing so can cost you thousands of dollars in medical bills and years of potential heartbreak. Here are some of the most critical and obvious warning signs of an untrustworthy breeder. Less experienced breeders will charge on the lower end, and more experienced breeders usually with generations of pure genetic proof! Additionally, some of the best breeders will only sell trained puppies to ensure their pooches are family- and forever-home ready. Therefore, you should receive standard documentation upon adopting your new Golden Retriever puppies, such as care instructions, registration papers, vaccination records, and necessary contracts. The contract may also state that you agree to surrender the puppy instead of adopting him out to a shelter or the pound. Some warranties will say that the breeder should have the right to reclaim the puppy in an unexpected situation like this. If you do ask for references, and they give you a list of written reviews instead of contact information for former clients, this is a red flag. A refusal for a tour means that the breeder knows potential clients may be turned away by the environment. If you are invited to tour a facility, learn about what a professional kennel should look and smell like first. The bottom line is, you need to do plenty of research. How exciting! Puppies are adored by everyone. Not every puppy will be the right fit for you. Choose a Trusted Breeder A responsible breeder is the best place to find a well-bred, healthy dog, whether you are looking for a family pet or companion animal. As a breeder, the puppy should be raised in the house, with normal daily activities so that it becomes accustomed to sounds and human interaction. When in doubt, walk away. Trust your instincts. A good breeder would not breed puppies without her present. If a breeder is unwilling to let you see her, walk away. Ask as well if you can see the father. This may not always be possible as the father may be owned by another breeder and used exclusively for stud purposes. At least three generations should be included the parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents. Lastly, find out how often the mother of the litter has been bred and the number of litters she has had — If she has had multiple litters in a year, then this is too frequent. Ask Questions A reputable breeder will conduct an interview with you. You will be evaluated carefully before the puppy is given to you. Breeders who care about placing their puppies in good homes take the interview process seriously. You should also expect the breeder to have a lot of knowledge about the breed and be able to answer any questions you may have. Breeders should also know about the major problems within the breed. Breeders of reputable dogs will have developed a breeding program that reduces or even eliminates the risk of such disorders occurring in their dogs. Ensure that both the mother and the father have formal health clearances even if the father is not present, the clearances should be on file. The mother and father should be at least 24 months old to receive final health clearances. No reputable breeder would sell their puppies without getting them inoculated and having a general checkup. Size Activity Level and Exercise Requirements Goldens are a Sporting breed and need regular exercise, and this is most pronounced during puppyhood up to approximately two years of age. While most Goldens can adapt to a less active lifestyle once they are mature and trained, puppies and adolescents often have energy to burn. Rule to remember: A physically tired puppy is a well-behaved puppy! Appropriate outlets for youthful enthusiasm include brisk walks on lead, swimming, chasing a ball in a safe enclosure, play dates with known safe dogs, and even obedience, agility, tracking, and field training sessions. As adults and into their senior years, Goldens still benefit from regular, vigorous activity to maintain lean body weight, promote physical and mental fitness, and improve longevity. And since most Goldens are not interested in exercising alone and need their people to accompany them, the bonus is that the whole family can benefit from a commitment to exercising their Golden! About Fenced Yards A fenced yard barrier or electronic fencing can be a relatively secure place to allow a Golden to run, play, and retrieve when a member of the family is outside with him. Further, barrier fences are rarely completely safe from a determined or simply bored dog that may dig, chew, climb, or jump out. Electronic fences can be breached from the inside by an excited dog chasing a squirrel, perhaps , and from the outside by wildlife, other dogs, and dognappers. Shedding and Grooming Goldens shed, and whatever amount of coat they have this can vary between litters , will eventually fall out. That beautiful gold coat that feels so luxurious to run your fingers through undergoes natural cycles of growth, dormancy, shedding, and then regrowth, and there is little that can alter that. Depending on several factors, major shedding cycles generally occur about once per year, but there is also some minor coat loss all year long. For most of the year, weekly brushing is sufficient, but daily brushing is almost mandatory during major sheds. Baths are particularly helpful to loosen dead coat so that it can be brushed out once the dog is dry before it falls out around the house. Goldens can be bathed as frequently as the owner desires, and clean, dry skin and ears help keep the skin and ears healthy. Professional groomers and many hobby breeders and exhibitors use high-powered blow driers not only to dry their dogs, but also to assist in removing dead coat. Some pet owners may find a professional style drier to be a worthwhile investment when spread over the lifetime of the dog, and a knowledgeable breeder should be able to suggest brands and models that are suitable. Nonetheless, despite regular grooming and increased vacuuming, there will still be Golden fur on the floor, perhaps on the furniture, and maybe even in the soup! Can f 1 levels in hair and homes of different dog breeds: lack of evidence to describe any dog breed as hypoallergenic. J Allergy Clin Immunol. Epub Jun .Goldens and Children Goldens have a well-deserved reputation as being wonderful family dogs and excellent with children. That makes it all the more sad that families who are drawn to Goldens because of small children in the family, can sometimes encounter difficulties raising a puppy. So why does this happen? First, adding a new puppy to the family is very much like adding a toddler in terms of the time and attention required, and commotion that may ensue. Unfortunately, this may result in not investing the time and effort needed to provide enough exercise and to teach the puppy good manners. Second, interaction with young children can excite and confuse a puppy. Puppies naturally chase, jump, and bite as they did with their littermates , and the sounds and movements that children make can incite this normal but rough puppy behavior. The success of relationships between puppies and children depends almost entirely on supervision by the parents, and without this, mishaps are bound to occur. Worst of all is when the new puppy repeatedly misbehaves because it is not getting the time, exercise, and training that it needs, and then ends up banished to a garage or yard or crate. So, yes, most Goldens are good with children — but only when the parents commit enough time and energy to raise them well. Thus, an 8 week old puppy coming into a new family is similar in abilities and needs relative to its species! In this context, one can understand that months of age is a critical developmental period for a puppy, and appropriate socialization and training during this time lays the foundation for a lifetime of calm and well-mannered behavior in public and at home. Socialization should include frequent exposure to all the situations that he may encounter as an adult, including: car rides, visitors in your home, neighborhood walks, loud and unfamiliar places, bathing and grooming including trimming nails and cleaning ears , parks and schoolyards, outdoor shopping malls, and so forth. Puppy training classes puppy kindergarten can also be a very useful part of this process, and skilled instructors will teach owners how to effectively interact with and train their puppies. All of these activities are necessary to turn a rambunctious puppy into a well-behaved Golden companion, and require a significant time commitment from an adult in the family. Since early socialization and training are so crucial, prospective owners should plan to get their new puppy when they are willing and able to devote extensive time and energy to raising their puppy well. It is an investment that will pay a lifetime of dividends! The safest and most efficient way to teach a puppy good habits is to not allow him to engage in unacceptable behavior when he is unsupervised. In most households, this means crating or otherwise confining the puppy any time that an adult is not able to actively supervise, including at night, when away from home, or while preoccupied with another task such as a phone call. Puppies can easily nap during approximately hours of confinement, providing that they are tired after exercise, have had some social interaction, and that bowel and bladder are empty. They cannot, however, be hurried through a quick walk in the morning, fed breakfast, and then left in a crate for 8 hours while everyone in the household is gone for the day. If the time that a very young puppy must be left alone stretches to more than a half day, arrangements such as doggie day care or hiring a dog-walker should be considered, at least for the first several months. Housing arrangements Golden Retrievers want to be where their people are. One of their most endearing characteristics is that they are so people oriented, and this means that they need to live as members of the family. If you are an outdoorsy person, your Golden will want to be with you. If you are more of an indoor sort, your Golden will want to be with you there, too. Goldens do not do well kept away from people, such as in a fenced yard, in a garage, or worst of all, tied outside. Isolated from human companionship, they become bored and stressed, and this produces behavior such as barking, chewing, digging, and hyperactivity. In extreme cases, these behaviors result in surrender of the dog to a shelter or rescue organization. About Goldens as Watch Dogs or Guard Dogs Adult Goldens are observant and some will bark when they detect activity outside the home, which may be a deterrent to intruders. Size Golden Retrievers are large dogs. The AKC Breed Standard sets the ideal height for males at 23 to 24 inches measured at the shoulder and the weight from 65 — 75 pounds. Size that is significantly larger or smaller than the Standard may be an indication that the breeder does not place priority on following the GRCA Code of Ethics, and this also raises concerns regarding other aspects of the breeding, such as health and temperament issues. However, puppies spayed or neutered prior to maturity grow taller and lankier than their genes intended, and are more likely to become obese, in addition to other health consequences. Do You Still Want a Golden? We believe that it was important for you to know up front all the reasons that you might not want a Golden, so that you can make a well thought out decision that is best for your family and best for a prospective puppy. But we also know that a well-bred, well-trained Golden can be a joy for its lifetime — and if this is the right breed for you, we are very happy to help you connect with reputable breeders. Consider contributing to The Golden Retriever Foundation. More Information. Golden Retrievers are wonderful, right? Well then, of course everyone should have one. Either way, it is vital that you examine your own lifestyle, needs and wants to see if a golden is right for you. And, conversely, you need to evaluate if you can meet the needs of a golden retriever. If you can, we can attest to the fact that owning a golden is one of the most rewarding experiences you will ever have! They are addicting and people seldom have just one in their lifetimes. Here are a few things to consider: Size Goldens are medium to large sized animals. The standard size for males range from 23 — 24 inches at the shoulder and weigh proportionally from pounds. Females stand around .They normally possess extremely active tails making clean sweeps of coffee and end tables. Quite simply they need room. Uncluttered houses are a must! A fenced in yard is especially important in providing the dog enough exercise. Another option is a fenced dog park or walking trail. You must have a plan to give your golden enough exercise on a daily basis or both of you will be miserable. The younger the golden, the more exercise they generally need. Velcro Dog Goldens are faithful companions. They are usually always by your side, many will follow you from room to room. They will lie in the kitchen while you cook and at your feet while you watch TV. They must be near their humans to be happy. Be prepared to do a lot of hands on petting with your golden — they love it. Some goldens are downright needy in their desire for attention from their humans. Leashes You may have visions of letting your dog play fetch in an open field or running free on the beach. As a sporting dog they are easily distracted by birds, animals or moving objects; they must be kept leashed when being exercised outside of a fenced yard to keep them from running off. Shedding In Florida, goldens shed moderately all year long. Brushing every other day is to your advantage. If you require a fastidiously kept house, a golden is not the dog for you unless you like to do a lot of cleaning. You will always have dog hair around, especially in rugs, on furniture, and OH YES, occasionally even in your food. With a golden in your house, hair becomes a condiment. Oh — and you will have to vacuum much more often than before — or little fur balls will accumulate along your baseboards! Make sure you have a really good vacuum cleaner that you love using before bringing a golden into your home. Health Goldens are prone to allergies, skin problems, cancer and hypothyroidism and you may have to spend a fair amount on vet care over the life of a golden. Common inherited health issues are hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, various eye problems and heart disease. That is relatively cheap compared to if your dog has a health issue and requires veterinary care which today runs as much as human health care. Setting aside a monthly amount for a future emergency is a must. There are also quality pet insurance programs available. Goldens must be fed a high quality premium food to prevent costly skin problems — which means you will not be able to buy your food at the grocery or discount store — and will have to make a special trip to the pet supply store. There are other expenses such as toys, collars and leashes, brushes, shampoos and soft cozy beds. A well cared for dog, like its human counterpart, is happier with regular checkups and daily care. Grooming Goldens can be adequately groomed at home without expensive equipment. Grooming includes brushing, bathing, trimming hair from the pads of the feet, light trimming on ears, tails and back legs when necessary, and trimming nails. Neatness Goldens are easily housebroken and make great housedogs. They tend to be messy drinkers, dripping water on the floor after they take their drink. You might even encounter a little slobber. Training Goldens are usually easy to potty train and make great house dogs. Many owners wish to make their goldens into good canine citizens. Moreover, goldens tend to be sensitive or soft in many training situations. They must be handled carefully with a loving, firm, but gentle approach. The end result is a well-mannered dog that is a joy to be around. Small Children People automatically assume goldens are the perfect dog for a family with children. Golden puppies quickly grow up to be rambunctious, strong bundles of energy that easily can play too rough with young children, especially when they are 6 months to two years of age. Though they may bark and growl defensively, when it comes down to brass tacks — they will gladly hold the flashlight for the burglar and give them a big kiss. Outside Dogs Goldens make poor outside dogs. Especially in Florida, they develop skin problems and flea allergies if kept outside. They frequently develop thunderstorm anxiety. As sporting dogs they are easily able to dig out of a fence or sometimes climb over it when left outside for long periods of unsupervised time because they want to be with people. They also are frequent targets for theft if left outside in a backyard when the owner is away from home. Goldens are very social and are pack oriented. They frequently develop behavior problems when they are kept separated from their families. A happy golden is an inside dog. Male or Female? Many people are fixated on getting a female golden, thinking that females are more laid back and affectionate than males. This is not true. Male goldens are blessed with loving personalities. Many people call them big teddy bears and even prefer male over female goldens. Well, there you have it — the inside scoop on owning a golden. Goldens Rescued Since

female boxer puppy for sale - So, while this is not a reason not to get a GSD, it is a reason to look for adequate breeders, to ask for health certificates, to take good care of your dog, and to go to routine vet check-ups. German Shepherds can also be costly to take care of not just to purchase The regular vet visits, the high need for exercise, and the extra-space requirements all make the GSD a relatively expensive dog to take care of in terms of money as well. German Shepherds are very smart but that also makes them easily bored — they require lots of mental stimulation As with all smart dog breeds such as retrievers and other shepherds, the high intelligence of the GSD can be a curse as much as a blessing. So, what can be done to avoid boredom? Toys and time. However, an inexperienced dog owner can find a GSD to be more than a handful. Why is that? Simple — because they are so smart! Yes, their intelligence means that you can train them a lot but it also means they can be temperamental, manipulative, and stubborn! This breed is cute and cuddly at home but socially awkward in public German shepherds are incredibly cute, social, and loving animals. They are loyal to their family and would do anything for those close to them. What does this mean for you? Even if you just get a random GSD and not give it any special training or socialization, the dog may still get along just fine with a cat or a newborn baby. However, in general, the social awkwardness and guard-dog nature of GSDs means that they often need to be socialized well if you want to make other additions to the households down the line. Make sure that you teach your growing GSD to get along with other dog breeds in the dog park or at home. If you have a cat or are thinking of getting a cat, make sure your German Shepherd is accustomed to interacting with cats without any aggression. One of the best and easiest ways to avoid most of the problems above is to just get a second German Shepherd! Yes, we did just say that this breed can be a handful. However, a second dog usually brings much more benefits than negatives: The second dog will join the first in the playtime, meaning that both will exercise with each other very often and minimize the need for your involvement. Having a second GSD also means more mental stimulation for both dogs — again, less work for you and more fun for them. As natural guard dogs, German Shepherds may need to be trained not to bark Unfortunately, GSDs are especially bad for apartment owners not just because they are big but also because they tend to bark at strangers. They are guard dogs after all. This can be avoided, of course, there are ways to train any dog not to bark at strangers or at outside noises. There are several reasons for this: The frequent barking we mentioned above. Yes, you can train that behavior away but your landlord may still forbid you from getting a GSD. Getting a carpet or another type of floor insulation will help here. Giving your dog enough playtime outside will also alleviate this problem. But you may still get in trouble with your neighbors. They are just a large breed and many people, including parents of small children, are afraid of large dogs. Not only are GSDs not hypoallergenic, but they also tend to shed a lot! There are two main reasons for this: The aforementioned health concerns that some German Shepherds have and that get more and more likely as the dog gets older. The simple fact that the GSD is a large dog breed and larger breeds just have a shorter lifespan than smaller ones. As you can see, there are lots of factors to consider before getting a GSD. In general, the right GSD owner can be characterized as such: Has a larger-than-average home, a yard, and a nearby dog park. Has enough time to spend with a German Shepherd. Knows how to train and socialize a GSD properly. Has the financial means to support a German Shepherd. Wants a second dog to play with the first one. How to prepare for getting a German Shepherd? Just like soon-to-be-parents before their first baby, there are lots of books and research to comb through if you want to give your future German Shepherd the care, upbringing, socialization, and care it needs. So Make sure your home is ready for a large dog to soon start springing through it. Make sure you have the time and daily schedule to play with a GSD. Consider owning a Cairn Terrier! In this article, we explore who would benefit them as furry friends! Check them here! Read on to discover nine types of people who should consider owning this unique breed. Check this article to learn more about the types of people who are perfect for owning a Poodle dog! Of that number, a large amount is returned simply because the owners couldn't care for them. This is especially common for puppies that don't receive proper training. You might think that German Shepherds are exempt from these numbers. They're so obedient. They're trained to be police dogs; they're in the military; they're even trained to herd animals on farms. They take a lot of training to get there, though, especially German Shepherd puppies. While adopting a German Shepherd puppy is possibly one of the most rewarding experiences you could ever think of, it's definitely something to think about before taking the plunge. Luckily, we're here to help you learn all you need to know about taking care of puppies and even what you need to know beforehand. Read on to learn all you need to know about taking care of and raising German Shepherd puppies. Also don't forget to check out our custom german shepherd gifts as well! Ensure You'd Like to Adopt a German Shepherd The very first thing you need to consider is whether or not a German Shepherd puppy is going to match your lifestyle. They're a physically demanding breed that requires a lot of regular exercise and stimulation. If they don't get this, you can expect behavioral problems like chewing on and getting into things they shouldn't a common thing for any breed. They're a particularly aloof breed, but they make excellent and watchful family pets. German Shepherds may take time to warm up to strangers and even children, but with proper training and boundary establishment, they're very well-behaved dogs. The two other large things to consider before you decide; how much their care costs and just how big they can get. While some females can be as small as 51 pounds, some males can weigh up to 90 pounds. Typically, females are smaller than males, but German Shepherds are by no means a small breed. Their average height is anywhere from 22 to 26 inches. If you need a size comparison, the average height of a Pomeranian is around 10 inches tall. The other thing to consider is how much they're going to cost not only to adopt but also to care for. Since German Shepherds are typically a large breed, they're going to cost more to feed, transport, and care for on a day-to-day basis. Tips for Picking a Puppy Once you've figured out whether you can handle the financial responsibility of a German Shepherd puppy , it's time to pick out the puppy themselves. Here are a few things to consider, whether you're adopting from a breeder or a shelter. Look for Signs of Abuse and Neglect Abuse or neglect is likely to be more common in shelter puppies, but it's definitely a possibility if you're adopting from a breeder. Some signs of abuse can include: Food aggression or refusing to leave food when called Separation anxiety Antisocial behavior Submission Submission can be a tricky thing to spot at times, but it isn't impossible to detect. Sometimes in it's a dog's nature to be naturally submissive, and it's an important trait to have if they're going to be around established packs. Here are a few signs of abnormal submission that can point to emotional abuse, though: Cowering in fear or hiding when approached Rolling over or walking away with tail tucked between legs when approached Laying down or cowering while urinating These puppies aren't impossible to rehabilitate, but they're going to require patience. Scolding or becoming angry with an abused puppy will only make the problem worse, so it's smart to consider whether or not it's something you can handle. If you're not adopting from a shelter, it's important to ensure the breeder you're looking to work with is a reputable one. Adopting these breeders is an especially important thing you can do to ensure you're getting a healthy and well-cared-for puppy. Look Out for Their Demeanor But also be aware that, while they're still a puppy, you do potentially have some effect on their personality as they grow older. While there are definitely things you might not be able to change how much they enjoy affection, whether or not they like playing for hours or a few minutes , but there are still a lot of things you can affect. The things you can affect usually have to do with their overall temperament. With proper training and boundary-setting, aggressive puppies can be taught to socialize. The same goes for shy or insecure puppies. Curious and hyperactive puppies are already set up for success on the socialization front, but you'll have to show them proper interactions with other dogs and even humans. Training Milestones Once you've decided on a puppy, it's time to start training. These are important guidelines to take into consideration and also important to ensure you can achieve. While this article is going to focus on GSD puppies specifically, they're also milestones to take into consideration no matter what breed of puppy you decide upon. Socialization Socialization is important for any breed because it ensures that you can take your dog out in public safely. It is especially important, however, for German Shepherd puppies from the age of weeks old. As we talked about earlier, this breed is naturally protective of its owners. That's why it's important to establish from an early age which strangers are friendly and what situations are not a threat. The more variety you can provide with your puppy's interactions, the better. This means typical interactions, like going for a walk or visiting the dog park, but also rarer ones. Some examples might be a blind person's white cane that helps them navigate or meeting a person in a wheelchair. While these interactions aren't exactly uncommon to see, if your puppy is unfamiliar with them as they grow older, they might see them as a threat the first time they come across them. The most important thing to remember when it comes to proper socialization, however, is that your puppy will pick up on your cues. This means that confidence is key when it comes to training. If you're nervous the entire time you're attempting to socialize your dog, they're going to notice and become hesitant as well. Ensuring that you're safely exposing your puppy to new sounds, smells, and sights will give you both the confidence needed to live and work together. Crate Training Crate training is a great way to help your puppy avoid developing social anxiety. Like socialization, confidence and safety are crucial to this particular method of training. Your puppy's crate isn't a punishment. In fact, it's usually seen as a safe space for them to go when they want some alone time. To start crate training, begin by placing them in their crate for feeding times and when you sleep at night. It might be difficult when you first start, but it's important to stay consistent, as this shows your puppy that their crate is a place they're safe in. It's also great to leave them in their crate when you leave the house. How long you're gone is going to depend on their age the older they get, the longer they can wait to use the bathroom , but it's still a good way to ensure they're safe when left alone. House Training Crate training is also a great way to supplement house training — especially for GSDs. House training is usually simple for this breed, especially accompanied by supervision, patience, and consistency on the owner's part. When you first bring your puppy home, it's important to take them out at least once an hour, though this number will go down as they get older. Reward them when they use the restroom outside, and don't punish them if they have an accident inside. When you use harsh reinforcement, like shoving their nose in their urine, they're not necessarily going to understand what's going on. Instead, if they have an accident and you catch them in the act, simply pick them up and take them outside. This shows them where they're supposed to go, reinforcing the boundary rather than training from a place of fear. Chewing The same goes for chewing on or getting into items they're not supposed to. Yelling, hitting, or scaring your puppy is not an effective way to train them. Instead — when they're getting into things they shouldn't — remove the item from their possession or move them to a different location while firmly saying "no. In this case, toys are expected to be chewed on. Setting clear boundaries and expectations from day one is not only going to make training your puppy easier, but it's going to make it easier for them to trust you. Obedience Training Starting at three months, obedience training should take place for your puppy. This includes basic commands, impulse control, and teaching them which behaviors are inappropriate for them to exhibit. For impulse control, that means teaching them to stay when food is set in front of them. Inappropriate behaviors will depend on the owner, but this usually means things like excessive barking, digging, chasing especially cats and cars , or even jumping and begging. Establishing trust is important for your dog because the key to obedience training is having their focus be on you. You're the one giving the cue, so they have to be able to trust that you're guiding them appropriately. Having your puppy sit before getting food, being greeted by house guests, playing with a toy, or opening the door to go for a walk is a great place to start. In these situations, the more you can have the puppy's attention on you instead of the impulse, the more effective their training will be. That means lots of positive reinforcement with lots of treats! After 1 Year For many breeds, one year old is considered the "end" of puppyhood, but for a lot of german shepherds , that doesn't come until the age of two to three years old. It's important to continuously reinforce training methods like impulse control, obedience skills, and even possibly advancing to other, more specific, training skills like agility, herding, and even protection work. GSDs are capable of performing all these duties and even excel at them. When you give your puppy something a job to focus on at certain points throughout the day, you give them something to look forward to — dogs of any breed thrive on this. No matter what decision you make, a puppy will make a wonderful addition to any family they're added to — German Shepherd puppies are no exception to this. Overall, the breed is a very loving, loyal, and protective breed. They're going to have a natural affinity for you from the start. If you give them the proper love, affection, and training, you're definitely going to reap the rewards of the decision you made to adopt. Once you decide to adopt, your puppy is going to need a few supplies of its own. Probably more so than most other breeds. However, even the best dogs come with their own set of challenges. Some traits are very similar, and some vary greatly between dogs, but most share typical traits of the German shepherd breed. Puppies are hard work Despite their irresistible cuteness, German shepherd puppies are hard work. Along with their need for lots of training, they are curious, bold, and into everything that captures their attention. They also love to puppy bite and chew everything that moves, including hands, feet, furniture, personal belongings, and small children. Puppy proofing the house and teaching them what is and is not okay to play bite is not optional when one of these tiny land sharks moves in. They need their people around From young pups to seniors, German shepherds become very bonded with their owners. Adult and senior dogs are happiest when their owners are nearby. If you work, you might consider day care, a dog walker, a dog sitter, or even another dog to keep them company. They are dog athletes and need lots of room to run and play so that they can burn off excess energy. They also have a lot of stamina and require plenty of time to get their exercise needs met. They get bored easily To say German shepherds are smart is an understatement. This breed is very clever and will invent things to keep their mind occupied when not given enough time, training, attention, and exercise. A bored shepherd can easily transform into a mischievous shepherd. They need lots of activities to keep their mind engaged as well as their body. The good news is, when you give them time and attention, they love nothing more than to focus on you. They can be expensive to take care of There is no such thing as a free dog but German shepherds cost more than other dogs to raise. For starters, the larger the dog, the more expensive it is to feed, spay or neuter. Flea, tick, and heartworm prevention costs more for larger dogs. They also tend to require premium foods to keep their sensitive skin and stomachs happy. They can be prone to allergies, breed specific health problems, and certain orthopedic issues that can equal expensive vet bills. When getting a new puppy, pet insurance is something to seriously consider. Prepare to invest in lots of toys German shepherds love to play and are also power chewers. Most can quickly destroy even the toughest toys and chews. When you own a shepherd, gone are the days of a toy lasting for years. They shed on everything German shepherds shed all year round and twice a year, massively shed. They are totally worth the work but may not be the breed for people who like things kept spotless. They have a prey drive German shepherds were bred to be herding dogs so they have a strong prey drive. Which means, they love to chase things. This drive is fun because it makes them totally into a game of fetch or Frisbee. It also means they may love to chase things, including small animals like squirrels, rabbits, cats, hamsters, etc. Can some dogs get along with other small pets? Are some dogs, especially those with stronger working lines harder to train and may be unsafe with small pets? Talk to your breeder or test the dog before bringing it home whenever possible. Socialization is not optional These dogs are powerful, naturally protective, and extremely devoted to their family. They can also be leery and standoffish with strangers. Teaching them how to be confident, greet people, and to prevent unwanted guarding behavior is one of the most important things they need to learn from a young age. Playful and lively Despite being fearless, they are also very playful and love nothing more than having fun with their family. They love to play games, learn new things, go for rides in the car, adventure, and spend time hanging out with the people they love. Loyal to the end There is no breed more loyal than a German shepherd. They live to please and protect those they adore. They are happiest when near their family and will spend every day of their life watching over their loved ones. They make the best companions and friends to those lucky enough to own one. Fans of the breed love them for their loyalty, courage, and intelligence. As family pets, they can be taught many things and thrive at being mentally challenged and trained. Since they were bred to work, they have a lot of endurance and energy that needs to be expended each day. Despite being so active, German shepherds also have a softer side. Their level of loyalty to their owners is unsurpassed. They love nothing more than to be near their family and the closer the better, so they can do their job of looking after those they adore. Because they have such a close bond with their owners, they make excellent companions and enjoy going on trips, car rides, walks, hikes, and are always up for an adventure. Mess makers Along with their shedding, they are also mess makers! They love to play with their toys and strew them all over the house, drip water all over the floor, roll in the grass, and play in mud and dirt. Common health problems in German Shepherds German Shepherds are great dogs for the right owners, but they are at risk of certain conditions and illnesses common with the breed. Making sure the parents of your puppy have had the relevant health screening can reduce the chances of your puppy being affected by some of these upsetting conditions. For German Shepherds, this is mostly due to the shape of their back legs and hips. There is a screening test for this. There is a screening test. Inherited eye diseases — including cataracts and multifocal retinal dysplasia. There are screening testing for these. Epilepsy — a brain disorder causing seizures. Pituitary dwarfism — a hormone deficiency which causes severe growth problems and reduces lifespan. Haemophilia A and B — bleeding disorders that stop blood from clotting and cause wounds to bleed more than they should. Screening tests are available. This list is not exhaustive, and there are many other conditions that German Shepherds have been shown to be prone to. German Shepherds and barking As with any dog, German Shepherds are likely to bark. Their main purpose was for herding and guarding so they can be quite vocal when people walk past or enter or exit the house, but how much noise they make will vary from dog to dog. Training and socialisation Regardless of the age of your German Shepherd when you adopt it, you need to have clear boundaries to help keep them safe and happy. As with all training — consistency is key! Everyone in the family needs to follow the same rules. German Shepherds are very loyal to their owners and can be protective of their family. They can have a strong guarding instinct, so careful training and socialisation will be needed to prevent any guarding or aggressive behaviours. As with any dog, your German Shepherd will need to be well socialised with people, other animals and different objects and environments from a young age. Try to keep the time your German Shepherd is alone to an absolute minimum as they thrive on company and will worry about you if you leave them too long. You should never leave any dog alone for longer than four hours. Exercise Be prepared — German Shepherds are very active dogs! They need plenty of exercise to keep them happy and occupied. This will also stop them from barking out of boredom or having a nibble on the furniture. Your German Shepherd will need a minimum of two hours of exercise every day. This should include walks and off-lead exercise in a safe area, with extra playtime and training on top to give them a good variety. You can find out how much exercise your dog needs , or even find exercises you can do together online. Our vets recommend spreading exercise across the day rather than trying to do two hours all in one go. German Shepherds are a great breed if you enjoy long walks and spending loads of time exploring outside. If there are times when you are unable to give them the exercise they need, then arranging for a relative, friend or dog-walker to come and help would be essential. Grooming Be prepared for a lot of shedding because German Shepherds have such thick coats! Ideally, you should give your German Shepherd a brush or comb down a few times a week to keep their coat looking healthy, prevent matting and reduce the build-up of dead hair especially if they have a longer coat. You may want to take them to a professional for bath time because of their size. Will you give now to help people and pets in need? Make sure you can recognise the signs of unhappiness or anxiety in your dog to help avoid any conflicts. German Shepherds and other pets To help them be calm and patient, it's best to socialise your German Shepherd with other dogs and pets from a young age. Some can be a bit bossy with other dogs as they get older but with proper care, training and socialisation this is unlikely to become a problem. German Shepherds are usually fine with other family pets they have grown up with. Your vet will be able to tell you how much your dog should be eating. You should feed them a good quality, commercially available, complete dog food. We usually recommend splitting their daily allowance into two meals. If you give your dog the occasional treat or use treats for training, remember to take this into account and reduce their daily allowance. You should try to feed your dog at the same time every day to get them into a routine. Remember to leave at a gap after eating and before exercising. Beware unusually cheap puppies as they could come from a puppy farm. These breeders must do extra health tests and meet high standards. Set up costs Puppy vaccines — if you rescue a dog, reputable centres will often vaccinate them for you. Remember that ongoing booster vaccinations will be needed to continue their immunity. Neutering — you should usually arrange for your dog to be neutered at around six months old, though your vet will be able to advise you exactly when is best. Check prices at your local practice as these will depend on your vet and where you live. Some rescue centres will neuter any dogs they rehome, saving you this cost. Equipment — including a collar and tags, lead, harness, dog beds, dog bowls, pet-safe toothpaste and toothbrushes, grooming brushes and toys. Keep in mind that all these will need to be replaced with wear or damage or if your dog outgrows or damages them! Ongoing costs Food. Preventive healthcare — budget for routine vet visits to help stop your dog getting ill and catch any problems early. They need annual check-ups, vaccinations and regular flea and worming treatments. Check if your vet offers a health care plan as this can help spread the cost throughout the year. Accessories — including lots of poo bags, replacing worn toys and grooming accessories, buying doggy toothpaste and any other extras they might need. Other costs Training — basic training is very important and dogs can benefit from formal classes. Some dogs may have, or develop, behavioural problems which might need professional management.
