When you bring a new puppy home, it's important to keep feeding it the same food that it has been eating at its previous home. The AKC advocates for the responsible ownership of dogs and promotes purebred dog events, such as the Westminster Dog Show. Go to source Talk to the person or organization that you are adopting your puppy from to see what food they are feeding it. They should willingly provide that info and they may even send you home with some if you can't find any to buy. If you can't find the right food in your local pet supply store, consider ordering it online. However, you would need to order it ahead of time so that you have it on hand when the puppy comes home. If you want to feed your puppy a different food from what it has been eating, you will need to switch its food over the course of several days. Feed that mix for several days. Finally, you can give the puppy all new food. If you are content to give your puppy the food it was originally eating, it's fine to do that. Every puppy will have different nutritional needs. Because of this, it's a good idea to discuss proper nutrition with your vet. They can suggest great foods to give your puppy and how much it should be eating. Go to source The right portion size depends on the size of your puppy and its metabolism. Ask your vet to teach you how to body score your puppy. This will allow you to do a quick visual check to see whether your puppy is losing or gaining weight. Tip: If your vet suggests a specific food but doesn't tell you how much to give your puppy, follow the instructions on the packaging. Doing 3 or 4 feedings per day allows your puppy to get enough nutrients without overwhelming its digestive system with a huge amount of food at once. This is especially important when your puppy is under 6 months old, as they have delicate systems. Go to source Don't just leave the food out all day. Take the food away after the puppy eats for about 10 or 15 minutes. Lab puppies should always have access to fresh water so that they can stay adequately hydrated. Put out a dish of water and dump it out, clean the dish, and refill it daily. Some puppies are really messy with their water dishes. To prevent a mess, try putting the water dish on a tray, so that spilled water won't go right onto the floor. We may earn money or products from the companies mentioned in this post. Well-bred Labradors are relatively low maintenance, fit and healthy dogs. But your Labradors continuing health and well-being does depend entirely on you. A nutritious diet, regular exercise, grooming, preventive measures and regular visits to the vet are the real key to maintaining a high level of wellness and good health. All these actions are your responsibility and solely under your control. Daily routines will be diet control, exercise and physical inspections. Weekly routines will be grooming, ears, eyes, teeth and nail care. Quarterly routines could be shared between visits to the vet, a canine dentist and bathing. And the annual routine will be vaccinations. Just remember that prevention is always better than cure, so doing your best to prevent any illness and catching problems at the earliest possible stage is the goal to aim for. The following are all areas where you only need a little knowledge to effectively take care of your Labrador well. And if you cannot dedicate this time and effort, then in the nicest possible way, you might be better suited to a pet with less demanding care requirements such as goldfish. Making Safe Your Home and Garden Labradors are a lively and inquisitive breed, especially during their first three years so you need to keep dangerous household items out of their reach. Conceal electrical wiring…we all know of their infamous love for chewing. Sharp teeth and electricity do not mix! A Labrador can easily choke on wrappings or trash that may be swallowed along with edible scraps. Labs are smart and opening cupboards and drawers soon becomes easy for them. Be mindful of the toxicity of certain plants — Over plants have been identified as toxic to dogs , so be sure to research any plant before bringing it into your home. Fence of any ponds or pools in your yard. These are just a few points to consider around your home and garden, there are many more. Just try to put yourself in your Labradors shoes and take a good look at his environment as he would see it. Try to see how he could get into trouble and take measures to prevent it. Brushing also helps to shake loose dirt out of and spread the natural oils throughout their coat for that desirable, healthy glossy look we know and love. Frequent baths will strip their oils, leaving them prone to wet and cold in winter, causing dry skin and making their coat look dull and not shiny. Keeping Nails Trim Most Labradors will need a nail trim every 2 to 3 months, although some may never need it. Regularly walking your dog on hard ground, especially sidewalks and roads, will have a natural filing effect and keep your dogs claws in order. This can make them sore and bleed. Ear Care What with a Labradors slightly drooping ears and their love of water, the inside of their ears can sometimes retain too much moisture, causing bacteria to build up and infections to form. I shall be writing an article on this very soon. Just some of the problems a Labrador may have with its teeth are gum disease, loose teeth, cracked or broken teeth, root abscesses and a build up of tartar. These can be very uncomfortable for your dog and can lead to further problems if neglected. Therefore, you need to inspect their teeth regularly, take measures to clean their teeth and even visit a professional canine dentist every 6 months or annually for a thorough check up and any necessary treatments. Treat their teeth like you would your own. Dealing with Parasites Controlling fleas, ticks and other parasites is essential for keeping your Labrador healthy. Immediate problems include extreme irritation and skin sores, but extreme infestations can lead to more dangerous problems including Lyme disease and tape worms. If you stick to a regular grooming schedule as you should! Simply brush your hand against the lie of your Labradors fur and watch for any small moving dots and check for any clearly visible ticks. There are many safe and effective over-the-counter flea control products , many of which contain formulations to prevent ticks at the same time. Finally, depending on where you live in the world, you may need to put your Labrador on medication for heartworm. Where mosquitoes are a problem, they can pass on heartworm and this can be fatal. Even the medicine for heartworm makes your dog very ill so prevention is definitely better than cure! Diseases such as distemper, rabies, hepatitis and parvoviros to name just a few. Your puppy will have had his first shots at five or six weeks before you got to take him home, and he will need a few further shots over a period of up to 18 weeks. A rabies shot usually follows at 6 months of age or so. After this, your adult Labrador will need just a single booster each year to stay protected. For many facts on vaccinations and the schedule you should follow when vaccinating your puppy, please click here. Dogs need a balance of vitamins, minerals, fats and proteins different to that of a human and feeding them on human leftovers can lead to malnutrition, as can a diet based on cheap filler packed dog food. You should perform a little research to find and use a recognized healthy brand of dog food that will cater to your Labradors needs. To help with this, please see our articles that list 4 of the best foods for Labrador puppies opens in new window or the best dog foods for adult Labradors opens in new window …yours really will thrive on these handpicked, quality foods! Additionally, the best thing you can do is set up a feeding schedule for your dog, twice per day being the recommended, and be mindful of any extra treats. Your Lab should always be well fed but not over-fed. I shall discuss this more in a later article. An Important Note On Drastic Changes In Eating And Drinking Habits If your dog is off their food, drinks way too much or way too little for a period of time more than 36 hours, you should call your vet as this is almost surely a sign of an underlying problem. They are voracious eaters and will eat just because they can, not because they need it. Excess weight can lead to all sorts of issues including arthritis and heart problems. To prevent this, control their diet and give them plenty of exercise for them to burn off those calories. They really do need very little exercise of just a few short minutes a couple of times per day. Too much exercise for a puppy can cause skeletal formation issues and plays a large part in joint problems. Take it easy until your puppy is at least a year old. Bedding and Shelter A Labrador should always have a soft surface to lay upon. To prevent this you should get your Lab a large sized dog bed or line a crate to offer a soft and comfortable place to rest. If your Lab spends any amount of time outside, you must provide shelter to offer an escape from the sun in summer, and preferably the shelter should have a raised floor so the wet and cold is kept away in winter. If your Lab puppy gets used to sleeping in a bed of yours or your children, it will be a hard habit to break and will more than likely end in separation anxiety and night-time whining. You want your Labrador to be comfortable alone for periods of time and should start forming this habit ASAP. Training The importance of training your Labrador cannot be overstated. A dog is a dog and not a human. You need to teach your dog how to behave and what your instructions are asking them to do. Before a puppy can become a trusted, well-behaved dog they have a lot of learning to do…and you a lot of teaching! To learn from the written word, I am part way through building the ultimate resource in the form of this site. Routines for feeding, exercise, grooming and visits to the vet are all easily managed with a little knowledge and by planning a schedule in advance and sticking to it. Spending quality time with your Lab is also key, especially regular grooming sessions. You should also attempt to learn your dogs normal living habits, how much he eats, drinks and sleeps. There are lots of good reasons for this. It helps puppies develop good bite moderation skills before they are adopted into a family, ensures that they are ready to adapt quickly to their new life. And it helps to reduce the sad numbers of puppies bred for a quick profit. Puppies sold under seven weeks old often have health problems and need special care, and extra veterinary attention. Check out the following articles for further information: When can puppies leave their mother Your first puppy Your first puppy is a huge adventure. You have so much fun ahead. Labradors are generally very friendly dogs, but they can also be very distractible. So do start daily training games, using plenty of food. You can get regular training tips from Pippa by email, using the box below. However, a healthy six-month-old labrador will grow significantly in size. Some of them can weigh up to 50 pounds. For a more balanced diet at six months, you can shift from feeding your puppy three smaller meals per day to two meals a day. To counteract this, you can drop the amount of food and gradually increase it. Setting Your Lab Puppy Up for Successful Potty Training Training an animal to control their bladders until you get outside is no different than potty-training for toddlers. In other words, crate training speeds up the potty-training process for your pet. Effective crate training depends on two things: Praising and rewarding your puppy for relieving itself outside. They come to understand this as a desirable behavior. Preventing your puppy from going to the toilet within the home. So, why is using a crate to train your puppy to go outside so effective? Initially, this should be every hour or so. As labs grow older, you can reduce the frequency as they learn to hold and release independently. Step 2: House Training a Lab Puppy Housetraining or potty-training small labs can be, well, frustrating. As a pet owner, there are simple ways to train your puppy to understand ideal behavior quickly. Instead, they simply forget that they should control it. This helps avoid any issues early on. Keep small labrador puppies off the carpet. How to Feed Your Dog for Optimal Growth Feeding your labrador puppy a balanced diet could be an entire guide all on its own. It can feel overwhelming because you do have many options when it comes to feeding your dog. For example, if you work from home, it would be easy to feed your dog homemade dog food. Similarly, you might work a and yet want to reap the health-related benefits of a raw diet. Make sure to speak to your vet first. You do have choices for what to feed your puppy and you can mix and match these. Popular feeding options for any animal include kibble, wet food, raw food, and home-cooked food. Remember, a puppy is still growing, and they need a complete profile of nutrients and minerals to support their development. There are many commercial brands of dry food or kibble to choose from and you can adjust what you buy based on the ingredients. Do your research and find a brand you trust, with as much bioavailable nutritional content as is helpful. These can harm your puppy. In order to maintain good health and prevent simple ailments, your puppy can also benefit from taking a supplement. Some families choose to mix scraps or raw food with kibble to provide moisture and decrease the amount of food versus the calories consumed. Any veterinarian will tell you that a hard and fast rule is not necessarily the type of food but the amount. Obesity is a condition that can lead to many health issues for this breed. Over-exertion, especially for a puppy, is possible. This includes activities like playing fetch or tug and release. However, breeds that worked as a hunting companion for humans love to be active. Again, this goes back to the strengths of the breed. Keeping up with your puppy could be a task-and-a-half, so in the first months of life, you should be keeping them in your backyard or playing with them at home. As they become house trained and get all their vaccinations, you can turn walks into light jogs or runs if you want. In the long-term, exercise will help keep dogs healthy and disease-free. However, early dog training can eliminate common problems with puppy temperament and help make sure that your fur friend is always as friendly and happy as possible through the years. Puppy socialization simply means making your puppy open to and familiar with new experiences. You want to provide stimulation and encounters with experiences that they will probably face as adults. The window of opportunity to make sure your puppy is always a happy and friendly pooch closes around 14 weeks. Pre-Vaccination Lab Puppy Socialization Any veterinarian will tell you that a puppy is all done with their vaccinations after 12 weeks of age. The main point is to keep your puppy away from other dogs who may not yet be vaccinated or the excrement and markings of other animals that could carry data diseases. You can head to an off-leash dog park to allow them to explore and meet other fur friends. You can also take them beyond your backyard to the countryside to enable them to swim or set up obstacle courses and play with them. Another thing that people forget about is spaying or neutering their dogs. Spaying or neutering your dog could help with behavioral issues and can also reduce the onset of certain health conditions. At the same time, spaying or neutering a puppy too early may also lead to health issues. For many people, this is a worthwhile and even enjoyable trade-off. A happy, sociable dog is always the result of consistent training. Training your dog is a significant aspect of their early years. The different stages include: Get it — Using positive reinforcement, trainers will help your dog carry out actions without commands. Teach it — This stage harnesses the progress you made in the previous stages. Your dog now knows the word and the action that goes with it. Proof it — Proofing is where many people get stuck. Your dog will learn to listen and obey commands at this stage even when they are engaged in other things. Maintain it — Consistently using the techniques you learned to keep your dog following the same desirable behavior. All breeds of dogs respond best when you train them. Every labrador retriever relies on their human taking control and showing them how to respond in any situation. You can be sure that if you follow these tips that you will be taking proper care of your new puppy and will be able to make sure that your puppy will live a long and healthy life. Share on. These dogs are so popular for some great reasons: Bouncy, cheerful, loyal, and enthusiastic Good with kids and other pets Above-average intelligence and trainability when positive reinforcement training methods are used Loves to play games, especially fetch People-oriented and eager to please Even temper and gentle disposition However, no dog is perfect! Labs originated in Newfoundland in the s and were bred from St. They were valued by fisherman for their trainability, trustworthiness, and work ethic. Fulfilling their retriever name, they would dive into icy cold waters to help pull in fishing nets and occasionally catch stray fish that had escaped. Today the Labrador comes in two varieties: the American tall and lanky or English short and stocky. Both American and English ancestries present all three color versions—black, blonde, and brown. When given plenty of vigorous exercise and attention, these sweethearts are gentle and well-behaved in the home. All you need is a ball to throw and your Lab will love you for life! The Labrador Retriever is a generally healthy breed with an average lifespan of years. That is why we have summarized the health concerns we will be discussing with you over the life of your Labrador. By knowing about health concerns specific to Labrador Retrievers, we can tailor a preventive health plan to watch for and hopefully prevent some predictable risks. That does not mean your dog will have these problems; it just means that she is more at risk than other dogs. We will describe the most common issues seen in Labrador Retrievers to give you an idea of what may come up in her future. This guide contains general health information important to all canines as well as the most important genetic predispositions for Labrador Retrievers. At the end of the article, we have also included a description of what you can do at home to keep your Lab looking and feeling her best. Unfortunately, your Lab is more likely than other dogs to have problems with her teeth. Dental disease starts with tartar build-up on the teeth and progresses to infection of the gums and roots of the teeth. Infections Labrador Retrievers are susceptible to bacterial and viral infections — the same ones that all dogs can get — such as parvo, rabies, and distemper. Many of these infections are preventable through vaccination , which we will recommend based on her age, the diseases we see in our area, and other factors. Obesity Obesity can be a significant health problem in Labrador Retrievers. It is a serious disease that may cause or worsen joint problems, metabolic and digestive disorders, back pain, and heart disease. Instead, give her a hug, brush her fur or teeth, play a game with her, or perhaps take her for a walk. Everything from fleas and ticks to ear mites can infest her skin and ears. Hookworms, roundworms, heartworms , and whipworms can get into her system in a number of ways: drinking unclean water, walking on contaminated soil, or being bitten by an infected mosquito. Some of these parasites can be transmitted to you or a family member and are a serious concern for everyone. Spay or Neuter One of the best things you can do for your Labrador is to have her spayed neutered for males. In females, this means we surgically remove the ovaries and usually the uterus, and in males, it means we surgically remove the testicles. Spaying or neutering decreases the likelihood of certain types of cancers and eliminates the possibility of your pet becoming pregnant or fathering unwanted puppies. Performing this surgery also gives us a chance, while your pet is under anesthesia, to identify and address some of the diseases your dog is likely to develop. Routine blood testing prior to surgery also helps us to identify and take precautions against common problems that increase anesthetic or surgical risk. Genetic Predispositions for Labrador Retrievers Bloat Gastric dilatation volvulus, also known as GDV or bloat, usually occurs in dogs with deep, narrow chests. This means your Labrador is more at risk than other breeds. When a dog bloats, the stomach twists on itself and fills with gas. The twisting cuts off the blood supply to the stomach and sometimes to the spleen. Left untreated, the disease is quickly fatal, sometimes in as little as half an hour. Your dog may retch or heave but little or nothing comes up , act restless, have an enlarged abdomen, or lie in a prayer position front feet down, rear end up. Preventive surgery in which the stomach is tacked down or sutured in place so that it is unlikely to twist is an option. If you see symptoms, take your pet to an emergency hospital immediately! Some of the blood supply that should go to the liver goes around it instead, depriving the liver of the blood flow it needs to grow and function properly. If your friend has PSS, his liver cannot remove toxins from his bloodstream effectively. Surgery may be needed, but in some cases, we can treat with a special diet and medication. Your Labrador Retriever is prone to a chronic liver disease called hepatitis that may develop around middle age. Hepatitis is usually diagnosed through blood testing or liver biopsy, and can be treated with medication and special diets. Signs of liver disease do not usually occur until most of the liver is already damaged or destroyed, so early detection and intervention through routine blood screening is essential for early treatment. Bleeding Disorders Your Labrador Retriever is prone to a bleeding disorder called hemophilia. This is an important test as we may not otherwise know whether your pet has hemophilia until severe bleeding occurs during surgery or after a serious injury. If the immune system destroys red blood cells, your dog quickly becomes anemic, weak, and lethargic. His gums will look whitish or yellow instead of a normal bright pink color. Sometimes an emergency transfusion of red blood cells or platelets is needed. Bone and Joint Problems A number of different musculoskeletal problems have been reported in Labrador Retrievers. While it may seem overwhelming, each condition can be diagnosed and treated to prevent undue pain and suffering. Both hips and elbows are at risk for dysplasia, an inherited disease that causes the joints to develop improperly and results in arthritis. You may notice that he begins to show lameness in his legs or has difficulty getting up from lying down. We can treat the arthritis—the sooner the better—to minimize discomfort and pain. Surgery is also sometimes a good option in severe and life-limiting cases. And keep in mind that overweight dogs may develop arthritis years earlier than those of normal weight, causing undue pain and suffering! The cranial cruciate ligament is one of four tough bands of tissue that hold each knee together. A torn cranial cruciate ligament is a common injury in active dogs, including your Lab. Usually, surgical correction can stabilize the knee and help prevent crippling arthritis. Physical therapy and multimodal pain management are necessary for the best outcomes. Keeping him at the right weight, feeding a high-quality diet, and avoiding too much twisting of the knees like when playing Frisbee are key in avoiding these painful injuries. When Labrador puppies are allowed to grow too quickly, the cartilage in their joints may not attach to the bones properly. This problem is known as osteochondritis dissecans, or OCD. If this occurs, surgery may be required to fix the problem. Our recommended growth rate for Labrador Retriever puppies is no more than four pounds per week. Feed a large-breed puppy diet rather than an adult or regular puppy diet. Neurological Disease A genetically linked neurological condition, known as wobbler disease or wobbler syndrome, causes a wobbly, drunken gait in affected pets. Wobbler disease is the result of a narrowing of the vertebrae in the neck that pinches the spinal cord and associated nerves. When pinched, the nerves do not send signals to the brain as they should causing the pet to be unable to feel his feet. The first signs you will often notice with wobbler disease are unstable hind legs, stumbling, and sometimes falling. Treatment options include medications, neck braces, rehabilitation exercise programs, and surgery. Diabetes Diabetes mellitus is a fairly common disease in dogs. Any breed can be affected, but Labs have an above average incidence. Dogs with diabetes are unable to regulate the metabolism of sugars in their bodies and require daily insulin injections. Diabetes is a serious condition and one that is important to diagnose and treat as early as possible. Symptoms include increased eating, drinking, and urination, along with weight loss. If he shows signs, we will conduct lab tests to determine if he has this condition and discuss treatment options with you. Treatment requires a serious commitment of time and resources. Well-regulated diabetic dogs today have the same life expectancy as other canines. Allergies In humans, allergies to pollen, mold, or dust make people sneeze. In dogs, rather than sneezing, allergies make their skin itchy. The feet, belly, folds of the skin, and ears are most commonly affected. Symptoms typically start between the ages of one and three and can get worse every year. Licking the paws, rubbing the face, and frequent ear infections are the most common signs of allergies. The good news is that there are many treatment options available for these conditions. Bleeding Tumor Hemangiosarcoma is a type of bleeding tumor that affects Labrador Retrievers at greater than average incidence. These tumors commonly form in the spleen, but can form in other organs as well. Unbeknownst to a pet owner, the tumor breaks open and internal bleeding occurs. Some tumors can be volleyball-sized or larger before signs of sickness show. We often find clues that one of these tumors is present during senior wellness testing, so have his blood tested and an ultrasound performed at least yearly. Lymphoma Lymphoma or lymphosarcoma is a type of cancer that afflicts Labrador Retrievers more than other breeds. This disease makes the body form abnormal lymphocytes, which are a type of white blood cell. Because white blood cells can be found throughout the body, this cancer can show up almost anywhere. Lymphoma is a very treatable form of cancer with an excellent success rate in dogs receiving chemotherapy. Luckily, lymphoma is one of the few types of cancer that can often be found with a blood test, so we may recommend a complete blood count twice yearly. Unfortunately, Labrador Retrievers can inherit or develop a number of different eye conditions, some of which may cause blindness if not treated right away, and most of which can be extremely painful! We will evaluate his eyes at every examination to look for any signs of concern. This is a common problem in dogs, and your Lab is more likely than other dogs to be affected. The condition usually develops slowly, and the early signs are easily missed. Symptoms include drinking and urinating more than normal, increased appetite, and reduced activity level followed later by a potbelly, thin skin, and hair loss. Treatment usually includes oral medications and requires close coordination with us to ensure correct dosing. Epilepsy There are three types of seizures in dogs: reactive, secondary, and primary. Secondary seizures are the result of a brain tumor, stroke, or trauma. If no other cause can be found, the disease is called primary or idiopathic epilepsy. This problem is often an inherited condition, and Labrador Retrievers are commonly afflicted. If your friend is prone to seizures, episodes will usually begin between six months and three years of age. An initial diagnostic workup may help find the cause. Lifelong medication is usually necessary to help keep seizures under control with periodic blood testing required to monitor side effects and efficacy. Note the length of the seizure, and call us at or call an emergency hospital. Heart Disease Some breeds like your Labrador can be born with a variety of heart defects. Defects can also cause problems with heart valve function or the electrical signals that control the heartbeat. Special testing will be recommended if we hear a heart murmur or if you notice any unusual symptoms such as tiring easily, coughing, a swollen belly, or fainting. Exercise Induced Collapse Exercise induced collapse, or EIC, is just what it sounds like — a young, apparently healthy Labrador collapses to the ground suddenly while exercising. After a few minutes, the weakness passes and he is able to get up again. Dogs affected with EIC cannot run or exert themselves for long periods of time, especially not in hot weather, so a day of hunting or strenuous hiking is not a good idea for these pets. Heat stroke can also occur in conjunction with EIC. Genetic testing can be done to diagnose this disease and to screen dogs before breeding. Muscle Disease Labrador Retrievers may develop a disease of the muscles called myopathy between three and seven months of age. Physical signs of myopathy include bunny hopping, loss of muscle tone in the limbs, a stiff gait, and carrying the head low. Typically, affected pets are treated through reduced stress and occasionally with medication as well. Most dogs with myopathy are stabilized by twelve months of age and are able to have a normal life span. While they are suitable as house companions, strenuous exercise is not recommended, so no hunting or working! Taking Care of Your Labrador Retriever at Home Much of what you can do to keep your dog happy and healthy is common sense, just like it is for people. Be sure to adhere to the schedule of examinations and vaccinations that we recommend for her. Another very important step in caring for your pet is signing up for pet health insurance. There will certainly be medical tests and procedures she will need throughout her life and pet health insurance will help you cover those costs. Routine Care, Diet, and Exercise Build her routine care into your schedule to help your Lab live longer, stay healthier, and be happier during her lifetime. We cannot overemphasize the importance of a proper diet and exercise routine. Supervise your pet as you would a toddler. Keep doors closed, pick up after yourself, and block off rooms as necessary. Brush her coat as needed, at least weekly. Labrador Retrievers generally have good teeth, and you can keep them perfect by brushing them at least twice a week! Clean her ears weekly, even as a puppy. Always walk your Lab on a leash as she has a tendency to run off after interesting smells and people. She has a passion for water, and swimming is a perfect form of exercise for this water retriever. Feed a high-quality diet appropriate for her age. What to Watch For Any abnormal symptom could be a sign of serious disease or it could just be a minor or temporary problem. The important thing is to be able to tell when to seek veterinary help and how urgently. Many diseases cause dogs to have a characteristic combination of symptoms, which together can be a clear signal that your Labrador Retriever needs help.

Check online reviews and ratings of German Shepherd breeders in New Hampshire and speak to current and past pet owners before making a decision about which breeder to work with. Ask for a tour of the kennel and make sure all of the parent dogs appear to be clean, healthy, well-behaved and friendly. Make sure you feel comfortable with your breeder and ask as many questions as possible before deciding to buy a puppy from them. A good breeder should want to provide you with all of the information you need and should be available to answer any questions in the future. This can be very helpful because it allows you to see if the parent dogs are well-behaved, friendly towards other people and animals, etc. Breeders who produce healthier pets generally take very good care of them; they spend lots of time socializing the puppies and making sure they are comfortable around new people. If possible, try to observe any interactions between adult dogs at the kennel and young puppies so that you can get a sense of how the breeder raises their puppies. A good breeder wants you to be happy with your new pet and will work with you to answer any questions or address any issues you may have. Questions to Ask Ask for References from Your German Shepherd Breeder in New Hampshire A reputable breeder will have references that you can contact to learn about their experience working with them. Calling the recommended breeders is a great way for you to get in touch with people who have actually interacted with your newly selected German Shepherd breeder. When talking to references, be sure to ask lots of questions. Here are a few ideas: How was your experience working with this breeder? Was your puppy healthy and did it have a good temperament? Was the breeder available for support after you got your puppy? Would you recommend this breeder to others? You should ask if the parents of the puppies are screened for any hereditary diseases at all stages of life. Good breeders will also have their puppies vaccinated and dewormed at an early age. They should also provide you with a health record of your puppy that includes dates of all vaccinations and deworming treatments. Your breeder should also be willing to offer a health guarantee on the puppies. The breeder should be able to provide references from people who have interacted with their kennel. These customer references can give you valuable insight on things like: What was their experience working with this breeder? Would they recommend this breeder to others? How were their interactions with all of the different staff members at the kennel? There are many places you can find a new pet, including animal shelters and rescue groups. That being said, working with a good kennel who is knowledgeable about their breed can make having a new German Shepherd an easy experience for you and your family. If you think that this may be the right breeder for you or if they meet all of our requirements , we encourage you open up your heart and home to one of their lovable pups. Your breeder should have a veterinarian they use and trust. The veterinarian should also do health screenings on the dogs in the kennel and provide routine care for them. There are some unethical breeders who are only interested in making a profit. Some warning signs that you may be dealing with an unethical breeder include: They are not willing to provide references from past customers. They do not health test their parent dogs for genetic diseases. They do not vaccinate or deworm their puppies. They do not have a good veterinarian they use. If you notice any of these red flags, we encourage you to walk away and find a different breeder. German Shepherds make great pets and should only come from a responsible breeder. Asking the breeder about what they know will help you make an informed decision about your dog. The breeder should be willing to share any health tests they have done on the parent dogs, including hip scores and elbow certifications. They should also know if their breeding stock suffers from any genetic illnesses or hereditary problems. Make sure that all of your electrical cords are put away and inaccessible to your puppy. Have a safe place for the puppy to sleep, like a crate or dog bed. Stock up on food, water bowls, toys, and other supplies. Be prepared to devote at least 30 minutes each day to exercising and training your new pet. With the right preparation, you and your family can enjoy years of companionship with this wonderful breed. Always take your puppy outside immediately after waking up, eating, drinking water, playing, and resting. Once outside, give your pup about minutes to go potty. Take them outside every 30 minutes or so until they start going potty on their own after only a couple of minutes out there. This will let them know what they are supposed to do while they are still young enough to be easily trained. Puppy Obedience Training Puppy obedience training is also very important and should start as soon as you bring your new pet home. Make sure to use positive reinforcement when teaching your pup basic commands like sit, stay, come, and down. Start with simple commands and then move on to more difficult ones as your puppy masters the basics. He is so sweet and cuddles up to you on the bed and gives kisses and gives you a bath. .He has the BEST personality and listens very very well. He loves to play ball or whatever you throw to him. He is so cute, when he comes out of the crate when we get home, he must have a toy to grab and run around with. And he loves to carry sticks that are bigger than him - he is so funny! I am always checking out the new puppies - they are adorable!! Hope all is well with you. He was excellent on the ride down. He's been spending the week with a Great Dane and a Terrier mix and he's been a perfect gentleman. He gets along well with all dogs, and also cats. Everywhere he goes, people complement him on his calm demeanor, good behavior, and handsome looks. I can't thank you enough for the work that you do to produce such wonderful dogs. We look forward to continuing his training and hope to see you soon! First off, I want to say thank you for for raising such a wonderful and pleasant companion. Mesa has not once left my side since I picked her up. As we discussed before, I had wanted to bring her on an Angel flight that my company participates in with our company jet. She has been on eight flights so far and keeps each one of the patients company as if she had known them forever. Again, I cannot thank you enough for giving me the opportunity to adopt such a wonderful dog. She truly is one of a kind. Pictures to follow once I get around to uploading them! One picture is from last July on the beach, the other is from this January. Greta is now two. She is so wonderful! Our two little kids adore her and dote on her and she is great with them. I am so so so happy we found her and am very grateful for the hard work that you are doing to breed great dogs with good health and temperaments. She is one of the calmest dogs I have seen inside the house - high energy outside, but calm in the house. Honestly Cathy, that was a great litter, I can only hope that when we're ready for another, we can get the same disposition again. See ya soon!! She is a sweet and gentle dog who brought happiness to our family after the loss of our twelve year old shepherd. The three years she was with you and your family no doubt made her into the wonderful dog she is today. Thank you. I got Bauer from you out of Jada and Brady. I could go on and on how great Bauer is. I'd like to think I have something to do with it but it starts with good breeding. My neighbors are big fans, even my parents who aren't big dog people, but Bauer got on their good side real quick. He's obsessed with water, pools, lakes, the ocean. So it's easy to bring him where ever I go. I''m going to attach some pictures. I think it was probably last January when I had him at your place for training. I just wanted to catch up. I usually check your site every so often to see the new pups, they look great of course. I hope your holiday was good. I am currently working at a private school that allows dogs I brought Luna to my interview and I think she may have had something to do with me getting the position! I had hoped she would be good with the kids because she is only 6 months and has some of those puppy habits- jumping, getting excitable, etc. She was calm and relaxed, even when 20 kids were touching her, crowding her, kissing her, hugging her and calling her name. She obeyed anyone that asked her to do anything- it was so cute seeing the kids commanding her to sit and Luna doing what ever was asked of her- sit, wait, catch, paw! I wish you could have seen her because just telling you doesn't do her justice. I was very proud and everyone wants to know when she will be in next I think she will come in on Wednesdays. I still plan to get her therapy certified this spring and hopefully this will prepare her for the test! We are also living in New Hampshire now and our apartment has 6 acres of land so Luna is having a grand ole time her favorite is still playing ball in the water- she loves to swim and retrieve the ball. I do have to sign her up for her second bout of training classes. Hope all is well and I will have to send you pictures soon! She looks just like Cleo but maybe a bit darker- they both have the same blond collar. We named her Cleopatra, and it is a fitting title because she is all that the name implies: beautiful, strong, elegant, intelligent, discerning, protective, and stately in bearing. She loves people and children and also is very playful with our two other pets, cats. She learns quickly when we attempt to teach her new commands and tricks, and has no aggression issues. We brought her to Cathy's "puppy socialization classes" and I believe that is the best thing, as pet owners, that we could have done. She learned to get along with other dogs of all sizes and temperaments, and through going up and down ramps, through tunnels and over shaky areas, she dispelled her fear of new things. She is still the only dog at our neighbor dog park that goes up and down the tall ramps or jumps through hoops, and with no fear. She keeps her eye on us at most times, but is not shy to play with the other dogs. She will approach any of them, even ones who may give her an initial low growl, with playfulness and good calm energy, that dispels any fear the other dog may have, and they become fast friends after a good sniff. She sleeps calmly in her kennel at night with her stuffed animal, and doesn't wake us. She potty trained in about 3 days. Everywhere we go, people comment on her beauty, and her long coat of many colors of sable, black and brown. She is an outstanding pet and the result of a great breeding choice of mates by Cathy. I'm sure she will breed these two Shepherds together again at some point, given the great pups she ended up with. Cathy socializes the pups from birth and allowed us to come weekly after they were three weeks of age to begin the bonding and present her with our scent. I'm sure it made the transition to our home easier on her. She never squealed or cried for her litter mates once we got her home and took a nice walk around our neighborhood with her. She settled right in. We love her to death and want to say thank you to Cathy again and again, after each wet kiss Cleopatra brings our way! I highly recommend that when you consider purchasing a new dog, you talk to Cathy Seale about her great breeding program and her resulting puppies. She hasn't seen him since he was a pup. She was amazed at how well behaved and sweet he was. Her exact words were this is how a Shepherd should act and I love his coloring and bone structure. She also said you can tell he wasn't an American Shepherd and that our Breeder knew what they were doing!!! Thank you!!!! Not only are her dogs and what they produce the most stable, healthy, wonderful family dogs and stunning to look at but as a breeder and a person she is one of the most compassionate and ethical people whom I have the honor of knowing. You'd have to go far and wide to beat her Shepherds as companions and a woman who is knowlegable and dedicated as Cathy Seale. I should be pleased to speak with anyone who wishes to contact me further. Nymeria is out of Kasch and Panzer and is our second dog, now living with our other dog Balian, our two cats and our four ferrets. I cannot say enough about Cathy or about Nymeria. Ny is our first german shepherd and our first pure-bred and Cathy made the whole process educational, enjoyable and frankly, awe-inspiring. We had the pleasure of meeting Kasch several months before Nymeria was born and were instantly impressed with her good manors and sense of humor- she entertained us and won our hearts in minutes. Cathy guided us through the puppy selecting process. We visited the pups twice before taking Nymeria home, an experience that neither one of us will ever forget! We could not ask for a better dog than Nymeria. Though her intelligence and drive are impressive, it is her temperament that stands out as purely magnificent. We trust her implicitly with our little one year old cousin whom she allows to take a ball right from her mouth and pet her anytime, anywhere whether she is eating, sleeping, etc. She interacts well with our cats and our ferrets, the latter being a particular challenge for most dogs. She deliberately chooses to avoid conflicts if they should arrise at the dogpark. German shepherds are not low-maintenance dogs and she constantly challenges us to meet her needs, both mentally and physically. As we strive to do this, Cathy has been there as a support system every step of the way, answering questions about tools, training, health, etc. She cares about her dogs long after they cease becoming her official responsibility. I'm so sorry I've been out of touch all summer, but Ace and I have been relentlessly busy since June. Ace is doing great and has been the definition of a perfect canine companion! I've been working as an assistant director on three small budget independent films, two of which are destined for the festival circuit. Ace has been faithfully by my side the entire time and has built himself quite the reputation as an on-set dog making friends all along the way! As much as Ace has met every expectation I ever had for him, he has also surpassed my highest hopes! He goes off leash so well that other than when we are in Boston he rarely has one on him! He doesn't even chase after any vermin or birds when the opportunity arises!! It's funny because all my life I've had dogs that bolt away the second they know they're not on a leash and I've always been envious of people who had dog's that didn't. Now I have such a dog!! Ace has had a bout with canine acne and a couple ear infections. Sometime back in July he discovered swimming and revels in it any chance he gets! Unfortunately coupled with air conditioning that can result in ear infections. I don't necessarily think he's had more than one, he just didn't completely get over it the first go-around. But I've taken to cleaning his ears out about twice a week and had to give him ear drops for a while, but he is doing much better with it these days! I made it a point to ensure that he had as much exposure to things as possible when he was a smaller puppy and as a result he accepts everything as a learning experience and rarely, if ever, shows angst when experiencing something new! He rides the T like he's been doing it for years, he does long car rides the longest so far being 8 hours very very well, he greets all dogs no matter their size with great respect and has made many friends in both dogs and people!! All in all I am most grateful for your service in providing me this wonderful dog, whom I have and expect to continue sharing my life with whole heartedly! We both treasure our time together and he has served as a great sense of stability in my otherwise chaotic life. I promise I will try to be in touch more!! As the summer winds down and our travels become less regular, I will have time to let you know how things are going more often. Again, I'm sorry we've been so distant, it was never my intention to leave you out of the loop. I've attached some pictures of my boy that demonstrate how he's grow so fast in such a short time. He is just as beautiful as ever and I believe his full nature will be the envy of dog lovers all over! I hope you've had a great and equally successful summer and continue into the fall. If the option is still available, perhaps we will make a trip up your way to visit soon. The dogs are gorgeous. Was just going through it and have always wanted to write a testamonial for you. I was remembering Anghus's floppy ears when he was just a little pup. Well in May he is going to be 6 years old. I can't believe it. He has just fit into our family so well. He loves everyone and loves to give kisses and be in the middle of everything. This past year I had a lot of surgery. Anghus has been by my side through all of it. He loves to lay on my bed with me and keep me company. Now that I can walk he loves to walk down the street with me He never pulls and stays right by my side. He is definitly getting me up and out more than I would if he wasn't around. I can't wait to be able to go back to the beach and walking in the woods with him. I also look forward to taking him to the dog park again and watching him play with his friends. We have a little yorkie who Anghus loves. Ben is a quirkie 11 lb little guy. He loves to play with Anghus and bite his feet. They play in the yard together and Anghus is always gentle with him. It amazes me that he knows he has to go easy with his "little brother. I look forward to the next 6 years with him and hopefully more. Thanks Paula Also wanted to tell you that I taught Anghus how to help me up from a sitting position. He stands very still and I use his collar and my hand near his back side and I pull myself up. He will also start to pull if I need a little more help getting up. It was like he knew exactly what to do. I am able to get up on my own for the most part now but he will still come and stand or sit in front of me and wait until I am ready to get up. Your suggestion. He is a great dog. So gentle and loving. BTW your grandson is so cute. Looks like he has LOTs of energy. We are so happy with aspect of Marvin. He such a great dog, and such a joy to be around, that I want to expose him to as much as possible. I just wanted to share a few pictures. People often stop and tell us what a beautiful dog she is. She loves playing jolly ball and running with Tricia and I. She is truly an awesome dog. Great Job! His obedience is outstanding after staying with trainer for week, acting like the perfect gentleman wherever we go now. Max goes jogging, biking, camping, to the kids sporting events, and to Jim's jobsites; we get compliments on him all the time. Jim even had a former breeder stop him on the street to say what a well bred, handsome dog he is. Max, like his mother, loves a good game of chase with the ball or a hoop. We've also discovered his tremendous love of the water. He pesters Jim to spray him with the hose when he washes the car and can't pass up a splash in the water bowl when he takes a drink. Most days my kitchen floor looks like the pool deck at the Y in August. We joke that he must have been a Portuguese water spaniel in a past life! He is fabulous addition to our family, and we can't thank you enough for choosing us to be his family. I hope all is going well for you. I see things are still "breeding" along for you. I thought I would drop a line to say hi and let you know that Dieter is doing very well here in Lunenburg. I put him in Daycare for about 3 months til my husband could deal with him better. That turned out to be the best thing until we noticed he started to get some bad habits. We talked to our trainer and she told us to get him out of there. The socialization was the best for him. The bad habits are under control now. He has the best personality in the world. He is a jokester. He can push the buttons on occasion but for the most part he is a gem! As you will see he is in great company. I could not figure out how to send you just Dieter so you will have to scroll through to him and see his pictures. I think you should be able to identify him.He has taken to this like it was in his blood.! He can find just about anybody, night, day, wind, rain, snow. He is "an amazing young man" and a "superstar" in the words of one of the trainers who is also a schzhund judge So, we are having fun getting to know each other doing things together. I am going to show him in a German working breed class.I have a handler that will show him. It should prove very interesting. She handler was looking up his pedigree and sent me a picture of "Arko" she found. .She was shocked, I was not! Well, hope you have a quiet Easter weekend. I will have to come down to say hi one weekend soon. Hope all is well. Obama is the greatest. You breed exceptional dogs. He is well behaved. Extremely handsome with great markings. His temperament is so so wonderful. And of course he is highly intelligent. Thank you so much. Thought I'd send you a pic of Layla at our granddaughters' dog day show and tell. It was a day on which the kids in her class brought their dogs for a show and tell kind of thing. We watched a couple of the dogs and found Layla to be absolutely the best of the show, not only in appearance but in the manner in which the dogs were handled by the kids. Layla absolutely loves kids and loves our grandchildren and amazingly can walk very calmly with any of the little ones Olivia age .She received a ton of oohs and aahs by everyone. As she matures, we marvel at her calmness, her unremitting love and affection, and her desire to do the right thing by pleasing us. She hasn't failed yet. Speaking of which, we went to Charleston, SC, for the month of Marchand she rode down and back without one peep. It was like she wasn't even with us she was so quiet and good in the car over a long distance. Amazing to say the least. Every time we take her anywhere we're stopped by numerous people asking about her. I've given your name out about a thousand times thus far. She really seems to command a great deal of attention. To boot, she's great with people. Still jumps up now and again but is losing that bad habit with time. Occasionally we take her to a day care called Pet Resort in Falmouth. They were at first leary of a German Shepherd being present but ended up asking us to bring her back as often as we could because of her ability to get along with dogs of all sizes and breeds. She is amazing to say the least. Hope this finds you and yours well. He's doing great. He's very bossy, but super lovable as well. He's a bit short and compact like his mother Mesa. He loves the water; we take him to the beach every Saturday and most Sunday's mornings for a swim and ball chasing. He's very much like his mother he constantly has a ball in his mouth. He falls to sleep with them in his mouth and when I come home it's the first thing he picks up. We had him in some training over the last few months and he's doing really well. We just wanted to thank you for him and we are very happy that we stumbled onto your kennel. I can't believe he's already two! He has been doing absolutely wonderfully and everybody just loves him. We constantly get stopped and asked who bred him and we've been giving out your name nonstop! Our vet is bonkers for him also, as a past GSD breeder. When we adopted another husky puppy a few months ago he welcomed her with open arms into the family. He's so tolerant and gentle of her little puppy personality, you would think he gave birth to her himself. Thank you so much for breeding such wonderful dogs, we'll definitely be back for more! Miranda looks at your website frequently and wants us to get Kiya a friend, wants to the key word : The kids LOVE Kiya she is really a good dog, she watches out for the kids all the time, knows when a 'stranger' comes into the house and certainly lets us know when someone is at the door that she doesn't recognize. Kiya loves being outside with them, plays ball with them all the time, she actually throws the ball back to them, just like playing catch. These pictures are from last summer, but we will do a better job at sending more to you. We will try to send you some from over the years. Hope you enjoy! I attached a few pictures of Rylie from our hiking trip to Mt. Lafayette in Franconia, NH on August 28th. Can you believe that was the day after her second birthday?!? She did so well on her first hike! She led the way until about the two mile mark on the way up, and was afterwards a close second to the leader of our small group. The total hike was about four miles up, and four miles back down, summit was 5, feet, and she loved it the whole way! There were other dogs out hiking that day, but Rylie was the only one who carried her own supplies in her hiking pack. We got TONS of compliments on her athleticism the entire day. You're breeding some fantastic puppies over there in Rowley!! Can't wait to see the pictures from your fall litters! He is the best dog anyone could ask for, very protective of our house and me and my truck. I work overnight in some pretty bad section's of Boston, and he watches me like a hawk. He loves running around with the little kids in the neighborhood playing with them. They are the only one's that are not scared by his looks. He is so gentle with them. Although we live in the middle of South Boston he gets to really enjoy the beach which is only a block away, he swims every summer night, and plays at the park with his 2 best Rhodesian ridgeback friends. We thank you for the opportunity to own him. Again, Thank You. He has recently returned home after being away for 3 weeks in training. He is so well behaved now. He had 3 trainers and they loved him. Their comments about Kai .They were surprised at how quickly he understood the program very intelligent dog they added. He still likes to push the envelope though and we are adhereing to what is necessary although it's so difficult not to spoil him. He is a very loving guy! Let me tell you about the newest member of my family. She is simply gorgeous! She has a thick coat and intelligent brown eyes. She has a strong build with large, erect ears. She is sturdy and steadfast. She adores children and is extremely gentle with them. She is a guardian of the home and my constant companion. She is fearless but not hostile. She is lively, dependable and obedient. In short, she is everything a German Shepherd should be. I was a veterinary technician for six years before I became a stay-at-home Mom. I have met many German Shepherds and many breeders in my career. Because of this background, I can tell you one thing with great confidence-- you will not find a better breeding program in the area than at NordOsten Kennels. NordOsten's dogs are both well-bred and well-adjusted. They are superior in looks and in temperament. Cathy's dogs are all fine examples of what a German Shepherd should be. We plan on adding another NordOsten pup to our family someday, but for now we are just enjoying our time with The Queen Bee. Zella is an exceptional dog and we feel extremely lucky to have her. Thank you so much, Cathy! You rock!

Killing these painful little pests necessitates a comprehensive plan of action, not just a flea collar or powder. The solution requires treatment and prevention that penetrates not only your German shepherd's coarse outer coat, but also the softer undercoat that sits against his skin. Step 1 Bathe your German shepherd using a dog shampoo that contains pyrethrum. Unlike traditional insecticides, which can cause vomiting and dizziness, pyrethrum has few side effects and is safe for dog's older than 6 months of age. When bathing your pooch, always lather his neck before wetting any other part of his body. Fleas will head for "high-ground" at the first sign of moisture by running up your dog's neck. Keeping his neck wet and lathered will trap the fleas so they can't cluster on his head. Step 2 Scrub the rest of your shepherd's body, including his snout and chest, vigorously using an old loofa. Cover his eyes with a dry washcloth while washing his face so the chemicals in the shampoo won't sting his eyes. Scrubbing with a loofa will ensure the shampoo and water penetrate through your pooch's thick double-coat to reach the fleas on his skin. Step 3 Continue scrubbing for three to five minutes and allow the shampoo to sit in a lather for another five minutes. Don't forget to scrub tail, genital area, belly and behind his ears. These often-ignored areas are where fleas tend to cluster. Discard the loofa when you're finished. Step 4 Rinse your German shepherd thoroughly using a spray brush or hose. Tousle his coat with your fingers as you rinse so the water penetrates his double-coat. If your dog is cooperative, and you have a deep bathtub, you can fill the tub up to his back with clean water. You'll still need to rinse his face and back, but filling the tub helps the water reach the less accessible areas, such as his belly and genitals. Step 5 Remove your dog from the bath and dry him off with a clean towel. Use a hairdryer if the weather is cold. Only walk him in areas you know are flea-free for two days after his bath. The shampoo kills adult fleas, but doesn't prevent new fleas from hopping on your dog's back. Step 6 Apply a topical preventative, such as Frontline Plus or K-9 Advantix, to the back of your dog's neck two days following his bath. Topical preventatives won't work on wet or damp skin, so it's important to wait until then to apply the treatment. Spread his fur when applying the product so the medicine goes directly on his skin. Always read the product directions before applying the treatment. Continue reapplying the topical treatment every three to four weeks to repel fleas and kill their offspring. More Articles. Frontline for Puppies — 3 pack 8 weeks and older, 23 — 44lbs Like Advantix, I still get fleas on my dog with Frontline. That said, I will continue using it as it does help. You need a prescription to get this and it is very expensive. You may not need to go through such great lengths if you live in a suburban area. Most people use this as an alternative to Advantix or Frontline; I use it in addition to those topical treatments. Treating the Yard Treating the yard is just as important as treating the inside of your house and your dog. The products below WILL kill the fleas in your yard. If you do not kill the fleas in your yard, they WILL get back on the dog, even if you have an indoor dog that only goes outside to go potty. The fleas will be waiting in the grass and will leap right onto their fur. There could be better products, but i have been using these two for years now and they keep fleas and ticks off of my yard. They are literally a lifesaver. Conquer Insecticide This bottle on Amazon will last you a few years. Now we are getting to the good stuff. I use this to treat the yard. Be sure to keep humans and pets off of the area you treat for a good 24 hours. Read the instructions very carefully and follow them precisely. Failure to do so is literally a federal crime I think. A friend came down with Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever as well. I quit screwing around and went with the chemicals. This was honestly a very last resort for me. Last spring I sprayed my yard with this in combination with Archer IGR below and it lasted the entire year. I repeat: This is one of those cases where you DO need to follow instructions. This is used in combination with Conquer above. What is an IGR, you ask? IGRs prevent an insect from reaching maturity. This helps with infestations because immature insects cannot reproduce. The biggest mistake people make is killing their fleas. You have fleas, you want them dead, you kill them. Easy enough, right? You have to kill them, kill their kids, and render their eggs useless, treat their environment, and make sure they do not come back. Flea eggs. An adult flea mommy can lay 40 freaking flea eggs every day. She lays them in batches of .The eggs are tiny, white, and smaller than a grain of sand. Most people think that flea eggs hatch in 3 weeks. This is false. Flea eggs can hatch in as little as 14 days, or take months to hatch. The amount of time a flea egg needs to hatch depends on a wide variety of environmental factors including temperature and humidity. Flea larvae. Larvae are legless and blind creatures which eat stuff mom left behind for them such as predigested blood and eventually make a cocoon for themselves. Flea Pupae. Got pupae on your puppy? How to tell if dog has fleas If a flea jumps on you or bites you, your home already has fleas, and your dog most definitely has fleas. Excessive scratching and biting is a sure sign of fleas, too: German Shepherd biting at fleas. This will first present itself as a painful hot spot and likely turn into a bacterial skin infection. Dogs swallowing fles are also prone to getting tapeworm. Basically, fleas leave behind saliva in their bites, and dogs can develop a severe flea allergy. Topicals and internal medications are ok for preventative measures once your flea problems are solved. This can lead to infections on the skin and internally. Tapeworms: fleas host tapeworms and as your dog chews, they will likely end up swallowing a few fleas that host tapeworms. You should be checking your pup regularly for fleas, especially if it likes to play outdoors. Use the following 3 stages as a rough guide to figuring out how bad the problem is and what kind of treatments you should be using: Stage 1 This is the early stage. We recommend using the full course of treatment to make sure you totally eliminate the problem. The biggest drawback here is that it does come in tablet form which means you need to get your dog to swallow the medicine. You can do this by wrapping it in a piece of meat or another treat. But this can still be a struggle with stubborn dogs. So if your dog is stubborn about taking medicine, try the treatment option below which is applied directly to the fur. However, for dogs 8 weeks and up and weighing at least 45 pounds , this is a highly effective and thorough treatment that is easy to apply and acts fast. Preventing Future Outbreaks The best way to deal with fleas is to stop them before they are a problem. Here are some tips for minimizing the risk of a flea infestation on your German Shepherd and in your home: Groom your yard: a mowed and trimmed yard makes your house more appealing to humans and less appealing to fleas and ticks who like overgrown plants where they can hide. You should also keep pet food bowls inside to prevent strays and wild animals from coming into your yard and leaving their fleas behind. Just as they like overgrown plants, they also like tangled, dirty fur where they can hide undisturbed. The thick coats of German Shepherds are especially attractive real estate for fleas if not groomed regularly. Consider shaving or at least shortening their coat during the summer months to keep them cool and make it easier to spot early signs of fleas. Vacuum: vacuum carpeting and upholstery at least once a week to pull out any eggs or larvae nesting in the fibers and waiting to pounce on your pup. If you currently have a flea problem, vacuum daily. And in either case, make sure you get into corners and along the edges where fleas will congregate to avoid high traffic areas. They tend to be good with kids, other dogs, other pets, and even strangers. Goldens love attention and they bond closely with their families. They will bark to alert you and can end up barking a lot if you do not train your dog to stop barking early on. Golden Retrievers are highly adaptable dogs. They thrive in homes with yards where they can run. They can also adapt to apartment living as long as they get enough daily exercise, mental stimulation, and attention. These dogs do well in just about any climate, but are sensitive to heat. As one of the most affectionate dog breeds , they are not at all happy about being left alone for long periods of time. Although super-friendly and attention-loving, Goldens can also be sensitive to their surroundings; make sure they feel included, but have a quiet place to go if things get too noisy or overwhelming. You can also enroll in puppy training classes for some variety in training and also some socialization. Golden Retrievers have a long double coat that will shed a little year-round and will be heavier twice a year as the seasons change. You will want to go to the dog groomer for a professional trim a few times a year, especially as the seasons change. Nail trims once or twice monthly keep nails from growing too long. Daily tooth brushing, along with cleanings at the vet when needed, is ideal. Golden Retrievers are one of the most active dog breeds. Daily walks plus some playtime, time to run, and other activities are usually enough to keep these dogs happy and healthy. But, they are high-energy dogs that will likely always be up for more activity if you are. Much like the Labrador , they also tend to have an extended puppyhood. They tend to start winding down a little around the age of 3 and settle into your lifestyle, but they will still be high-energy dogs that require a lot of daily activity. Goldens are known for being versatile and athletic dogs. They tend to love swimming. Once they are done growing and the vet clears them for higher-impact activities, you can try other things too. They are one of the dog breeds that make good running partners. You can also teach them how to play frisbee or play fetch. Training for dog sports is another good option. In addition to obedience, Golden Retrievers are well suited for agility, dock diving , rally, flyball, tracking, and more. Fully-grown Golden Retrievers usually stand inches tall and weigh pounds. Golden Retrievers generally live for years on average. With their intelligence, eagerness to please, and gentle disposition, Golden Retrievers are versatile working dogs. Brown and yellow Labs were extremely uncommon, and were not at all desirable. Over time, this opinion changed and brown and yellow Labs became more accepted. Shooting communities still tend to prefer the black Lab, but yellow Labs are very common in other working roles, like as therapy dogs and guide dogs. On the whole, each official Labrador color will cost a similar amount. But, yellow and brown Labs may cost slightly more than black Labs, since the genes that cause their coloring are recessive and therefore are less common. Dilute coloring is recessive and highly controversial in the Labrador community. The genes that cause these shades will dilute pigmentation, turning black Labs into charcoal Labs, chocolate Labs into silver Labs, and yellow Labs into champagne Labs. Some believe this color results from cross-breeding. But, others believe the recessive genes simply remained hidden over generations, like original yellow and chocolate coloring. Dilute colors are not accepted in the official breed standard. So, many breeders will not adjust their price, and may even lower it for unexpected dilute puppies. The same is the case with mismarks. Mismarks can include white patches and spots, brindling, and even tan markings. Extensive mismarks will disqualify a Lab from show. Show type Labs are bred to fit the Labrador breed standard. They are usually slightly stockier and less active than field types. Field types are more often bred for their working ability than for any specific appearance. Labradors cost more when they are bred to show standards. Field Labs tend to be cheaper than Labradors bred for show. But, you should consider which type is best for you, rather than just going for the cheapest Labrador you can find. Field type Labs can be much more energetic and active than show types. First time owners may find the English Lab slightly easier to raise and train! Conversely, Labrador costs can be highest with field trial champion bred dogs that are likely to win awards. Labrador Costs From Breeders vs Shelters Labrador puppies from reputable breeders will cost more than dogs from a rescue center. Whilst Labs from breeders can cost thousands of dollars, Labradors from rescue centers can only be a few hundred dollars. A major difference between Labs from a breeder and Labs from a rescue center is the history of the dogs. Puppies from a breeder will stay with their mom and siblings until 8 weeks old. At 8 weeks, puppies can go to their new home. Rescue center dogs can have unknown histories, or even histories that involve abuse. Labs from rescue centers are usually older, and have often lived with other families. However, many Labs are given up for non-behavioral reasons. They can be just as wonderful pets as puppies from a breeder. And, many dogs from rescue centers will have basic training, including house training, obedience, and potentially recall. Why Are Breeders So Expensive? Reputable breeders tend to cost more than any other puppy source. Breeders have to spend a lot when breeding a litter, and all of this will lower their profit margins. Labrador breeding costs include: Health testing and certificates. Are they good family dogs? Labrador Dog Price — The Costs Involved Buying a Labrador is not just a question of the purchase price of a Lab puppy, though of course that is important. There are other costs involved, both financial, emotional and in terms of time and effort. So we need to look at those too. You may be wondering whether you will have the time for a dog, and if you have the space and energy for a large and lively breed? But this page will take you back to the fundamental considerations, to help you to make the right choice for you and your family. Do you have time for a dog? Can you afford a dog? What about your lifestyle? Will a dog fit in with your family? Is a Labrador the right dog for you? These questions all apply regardless of the type of Labrador you are looking for. The needs of a black Lab, yellow Lab or chocolate Lab are all the same in these respects. The same goes for an English or American Labrador too. Dogs need space, both indoors and outside. Even small breeds need room to stretch their legs and run about. And Labradors as fairly large and lively dogs need quite a lot of space. This means you need a decent sized backyard if you plan on buying a Labrador puppy. Somewhere that your Lab dog can run around, play and enjoy training sessions with you. Labradors can be quite silly during adolescence, bouncing and cavorting in the home. Their tails are long and thick, easily knocking any fragile decorations you might have from shelves. If you have lots of ornaments then you will need to move them to higher shelves to avoid them getting damaged. You will also need to move anything that could be easily damaged by chewing. With small puppies this will be very often indeed. Perhaps every 15 to 20 minutes during their first few days with you. If you live in a flat, or do not have a garden, this will be difficult for you. These are helpful but do take up a lot of space. Although this will take up a lot of space indoors, it can work very well for larger apartments with no easy outside access. Ideally however you do need to have a garden, and a part of the garden which your dog can use as a bathroom, along with a good system for clearing up after him hygienically. Space is key for a Lab dog! The right space for a Labrador includes large clear rooms in the house, with no breakable or fragile objects within his grasp. And ideally access to a garden where they can easily be let out to the bathroom and have room to play. Keeping a single Labrador permanently outside however is not usually a good idea, even with adequate shelter and security. Labs are very sociable dogs and prone to separation anxiety if they lack company. This means your dog may be both sad and noisy. It is always sad to hear from new puppy owners that are struggling to juggle the needs of a puppy with their need to work. These articles will help you to deal with this common issue. Even with a visit at lunch time. An older dog may cope with being left for up to four hours in row on a regular basis, but puppies need more attention than this. Contented Labradors are fairly quiet dogs and unlikely to disturb your neighbors. Nor are they very good guard dogs. However, lonely dogs bark and wreck things. If you work all day, can you afford to pay someone to come in and let him out to stretch his legs and empty himself? Or do you have a relative or friend that would be prepared to do this on a regular basis. Bear in mind that this is quite a lot to ask of anyone in the long term. The biggest long term time commitment in owning a dog is in the form of training and exercise. Training Takes Time All dogs need training in order that they can rub along in human society without being a complete nuisance. This means a regular daily commitment of ten to twenty minutes from you, in addition to your regular interaction with the dog. Training cannot be saved up for the weekend, your dog will have forgotten most of what he learnt the weekend before, and he does not have the attention span to concentrate on you for an hour and a half. You can find out more about training your Labrador puppy here. Staying Fit Exercise is required on a regular basis, for some breeds of dog this means at least an hour a day of walking or jogging to keep your dog fit and healthy. You can find out more about the exercise requirements of a Labrador puppy here. Whilst your dog will not come to any harm if you miss a day occasionally, a daily routine is often the best way to ensure that you build this important habit. Can You Afford A Dog? Dogs can be quite expensive to run. You need to consider not only how much a Labrador will cost you to buy, but also how much it will cost you to keep. How much do Labradors cost from breeders? The price of a Labrador puppy will vary from breeder to breeder, and from place to place. Perhaps you know a friend that has a litter of puppies and they are going to let you have one for free. However, the purchase price of a dog is almost irrelevant. It is such a small part of the final cost. The cost of keeping a Labrador The reality is, you are also going to need to fork out a chunk of your wages each week on keeping your pooch happy and healthy. Obviously you will have taken the cost of a good brand of Labrador puppy food into consideration. It is a good idea to budget for veterinary insurance too. Not because it is unreasonably priced, but simply because it is now so advanced. You can fix a lot of problems these days. We can do open heart surgery, mend complex fractures, treat cancer with radiotherapy or chemotherapy. Pretty much anything you can treat in a human, you can now treat in a dog. And the catch? It costs. The more comprehensive your insurance package the more it will cost. Watch out for very cheap deals, as they may not provide continuing cover for long term ailments. You will also need to vaccinate your dog against common canine illness , and this will probably need to be done each year too. Especially if you are wanting to occasionally leave them in boarding kennels when you go away, as they require up to date vaccination certificates. Labrador Puppy Costs There will be a few other one-off costs such as a puppy crate and puppy play pen for your home for when your dog is young, another for your car if you have one. Then there are bowls, bedding, collar, leash etc. But you may be able to borrow a crate or get one second hand. Here are some of the items you will need for your new Labrador puppy, and reviews on the best options for Labradors:. Breeds The link has been copied! Few dogs are as intelligent and loyal as German Shepherds. With its athletic build and remarkable drive, this working breed makes excellent companions, herding dogs, police K-9s, and therapy animals. How much does a German Shepherd cost? The price of a German Shepherd puppy can vary a lot from one breeder to another. German Shepherds are active and need plenty of stimulation. Flea and tick preventatives are a must-have. You might face additional costs such as pet insurance, training classes, boarding fees, or dog walkers. Puppies tend to cost more due to the high demand. However, professional breeders charge a lot more. Professional breeders usually conduct health testing for the parents. Elbow and hip dysplasia and degenerative myelopathy are the two main tests to look for when adopting a GSD puppy. Prenatal care for the mother can be expensive. These costs can include bloodwork, ultrasounds, and X-rays. Most breeders raise the puppies for the first eight to 12 weeks. They provide nutrition, a living space, socialization, and sometimes early training. Puppies typically receive veterinary care, including a first round of booster shots and a deworming treatment. Colors German Shepherds can come in a few different colors. Black and tan and black and cream are the most common GSD colors. However, there are rarer colors, like black and silver, sable, or black. These colors meet the official breed standards, and a puppy with an unusual color can be worth more. Bloodline and Purity One of the key factors that influences the cost of a GSD puppy is the parents and their pedigrees. A breeder will look at how well the parents match the AKC breed standards. Both parents should be the right height and color. They should have a muscular morphology and the proper head shape. Breeders who are able to trace the ancestry of a litter over several generations and document that all the ancestors are purebred GSDs will charge more. You should also expect to pay more if a breeder can provide health testing information over several generations. Titles are another important factor. Show dogs can receive V, VA, or VA1 titles if they do well at an event and judges determine they meet all the standards of the breed. An IGP3 title indicates that a dog can protect its owner. Parents with IGP or IPO titles produce puppies that are worth more since breeders consider these animals to have excellent potential for training. Due to their athletic build, these dogs need at least two hours of exercise every day. Going for walks might not be sufficient. Share your thoughts in the comments below. My passion for animals started at a very young age as I grow up on a farm with several horses, cows, cats, chickens, and dogs on our property. Leave a Comment. German Shepherds are considered healthy dogs that can live many years. You must be able to pay for these dogs every month of their lives. For the most part, providing your dog with a lot of exercise and high-quality food will prevent the dog from developing unforeseen health issues. You will need to buy a dog-safe toothpaste, dog-safe shampoo, and certain medications, such as heartworm prevention, to keep your dog healthy its entire life. Not only do you have to feed your German Shepherd a lot of food, but you want to feed your dog food that is high quality and healthy. As long as your dog does not have any known illnesses or issues, you should not have to pay monthly prices. At the minimum, you should take your German Shepherd for an annual visit, assuming it is healthy. You also need to pay for flea, tick, and heartworm prevention. Most of these medications last for 1 to 3 months at a time. It is completely up to you whether or not you decide to get pet insurance. If you are interested in getting health insurance for your new pet, Lemonade offers customizable insurance plans and responsive customer service. If you do not want to pay for pet insurance, you can simply set up a savings account instead. So long as you have a house and a yard for your dog to play, the home environment is generally suitable for dogs. Some environmental maintenance things you will need to buy include doggie bags. You need these if you take your dog for a walk or if you have a yard that you have to maintain. You may also need to pay for carpet cleaner, deodorizer, and other items to keep the house clean, despite your heavy shedding German Shepherd. This means that your German Shepherd can help you out when you are in a pinch, but it also means that you need to provide your German Shepherd ample entertainment, or else your dog could become destructive. At the very minimum, you need to buy heavy-duty toys for your German Shepherd. German Shepherds can be really rough with their toys. So, we recommend some sort of brand specific for rough-playing dogs, such as Kong. These boxes will offer toys, treats, and more for your dog, but these boxes can be pretty expensive too. Additional Costs to Factor In In addition to initial costs and monthly payments, there are some other additional factors you need to think about. For starters, obedience training is really important for dogs of this size. Obedience training can be a bit expensive at first, but it will be worth it in the long run. You need to pay for a pet sitter or kennel whenever you go on vacations and your dog does not come with you. If you are buying a German Shepherd puppy, you may also have to pay to replace or fix items the puppy damages. Think about accidents or unforeseen illnesses too. These can cost a whole lot in vet visits. Owning a German Shepherd on a Budget If you want a German Shepherd but are worried about destroying your budget, there are ways that you can own one of these wonderful dogs without spending a fortune either. Unfortunately, there is little you can change about the price of these dogs up front, but you can save on the monthly expenses. The most important tip for taking care of a German Shepherd on a budget is to know when to splurge. When it comes to dog food, make sure to select high-quality food. This will be more expensive upfront, but it will ensure that your dog is healthy for as long as possible, resulting in fewer bills. Splurging on heavy-duty toys is another great idea. These toys will cost more at first, but they should last much longer than cheap ones. For instance, there are a lot of coupons and promo codes you can use when purchasing toys, food, and other items for your German Shepherd. Even if you find coupons, only spend money on the essentials. Not to mention, buy crates and beds that are suitable for the dog as it grows. Many people make the mistake of buying crates and beds suitable for the puppy, but the puppy soon outgrows them. The initial cost primarily accounts for the dog itself and any other items required when bringing the dog home for the first time. Even after the German Shepherd has made your home its home, you will still have to pay some pretty hefty bills for the remainder of its life. Although the initial and monthly costs for this dog are a bit high, they are required for this dog to live a happy life. If you cannot afford to provide a German Shepherd the sort of life it needs and deserves, simply do not get a German Shepherd. If your breeder had not run these genetic tests on your dog—or if you adopt a German Shepherd from a rescue or shelter, you can run the Embark Dog DNA Test using a simple saliva test you can perform at home. Dogs with CLAD, type III typically exhibit symptoms such as recurrent ear infections, skin infections, pneumonia, and other respiratory infections. Dogs with DM first lose coordination in their hind legs, then they lose muscle mass and eventually the ability to walk. It is caused by a lack of one of the proteins needed for blood to clot properly. Dogs with hemophilia A will often suffer from uncontrolled bleeding, most commonly into the joints. Uric acid is a waste product that is normally eliminated from the body through the kidneys. When the kidneys are not able to remove enough uric acid, it builds up in the blood and can cause health problems. Dogs with hyperuricosuria are at risk for developing bladder stones, kidney stones, and other health problems. P-glycoprotein is involved in the transport of drugs and other molecules across cell membranes. Drugs that are known to cause adverse reactions in MDR1 dogs include digoxin, ivermectin, loperamide, and milbemycin. There are several different types of MPS, each caused by a deficiency in a specific enzyme needed to break down mucopolysaccharides. It is caused by a genetic mutation that impairs the ability of the blood to clot properly. This can lead to frequent and sometimes severe bleeding events which can be difficult to control, even with the help of medications. Dogs with this condition are at an increased risk for bleeding and may require lifelong monitoring and medical management. Symptoms include weight loss, decreased appetite, vomiting, and increased water consumption. Affected dogs have problems with the development of their skin, hair, nails, and teeth. They may also have problems with sweating and the function of their tears and salivary glands. Dogs with this disorder usually have a very thin coat of hair, often with areas that are bald or have very thin hair. Their skin may be dry and cracked, and they may develop sores on their skin. Nails may be abnormally shaped or missing altogether, and teeth may be missing or poorly developed. Dogs with X-linked ectodermal dysplasia often experience overheating. Attend a sanctioned dog show and talk with breeders and competitors for recommendations. Ask your veterinarian for recommendations regarding reputable breeders. Check the Facebook page of the breeder and read through the comments. Remember, however, that comments can be deleted by the page owner. The breeder should be happy to share the name and contact information for customers. Ask questions. Lots of questions. The breeder should be glad to share the test results from the health tests and screenings and should be happy to let you meet at least the mother if not the sire as well of the German Shepherd Dog puppies. Ask how often the dogs are bred. Ask to tour the kennels. Are they well maintained? Do the dogs look healthy? Beware of operations that will not let you tour the kennels and breeders that want to meet you in a parking lot to hand over the puppy. Be prepared for questions. The breeder should ask YOU questions as well; be suspicious if the breeder has no questions about your past history with pets, your living situation, etc. The breeder should want to know how much experience you have with herding breeds, what your training plans are and your plans for exercising the dog. Ask if the breeder will take the German Shepherd puppy—or adult dog—back if necessary. Ask for a contract. If medical problems are diagnosed, the breeder should readily take the pup back and provide a full refund. German Shepherd breeders may adopt out of the area but, nonetheless, you will want to go to the breeder to meet the parents, view the kennels and bring home your puppy in person. This will add to your expenses—but breeders that transport a puppy by air are putting the dog at risk. If you want to buy a German Shepherd Dog from an online breeder, please think again. There are numerous scams; people spend thousands of dollars for a dog and never receive a puppy. AKC warns potential pet parents to be wary of any seller asking for payment by Venmo, in gift cards or as a wire transfer. Dogs purchased from puppy mills can mean years of heartache and expensive veterinary care—and perpetuation of a cruel industry. The pros of purchasing from a German Shepherd breeder: You may be able to select a puppy—including a choice of gender. A reputable breeder will be passionate about German Shepherds and will a resource for years to come. The cons of purchasing from a German Shepherd breeder You will pay far more for a cattle dog from a breeder than a rescue or shelter. If you find a breeder who has German Shepherd puppies for sale at prices much lower than you are seeing from other breeders, you must suspect you are dealing with a backyard breeder who has not done health screening, with an online seller who is operating a puppy mill or with someone who is running a scam. You will need to wait until puppies are available. You will need to do your own due diligence to select a reputable breeder. German Shepherd Dogs in rescues are far less expensive that those at a breeder. Puppies under a year old will be the most costly. This group provides funding to a network of GSD rescues — they do not have dogs themselves for adoption. They have a list of affiliated rescues that can help located adoptable GSDs in your region. A breed rescue is, like the name suggests, a pet rescue that is specifically for one breed of dog. These are generally small non-profit groups that operate through a foster system of volunteers who love the breed. German Shepherd rescues specialize in German Shepherds of all ages; some have primarily purebred German Shepherds while others may also have adoptable Belgian Malinois and Dutch Shepherds. How to Find Breed Rescues Along with the list mentioned above, many breed rescues list their adoptable dogs on large adoption sites such as:. If you are looking to buy a German Shepherd puppy, then you should find one from a reputable breeder. While these puppies are more expensive, a reputable breeder can guarantee the health and behavior of the puppy. These dogs are prone to genetic diseases such as hip and elbow dysplasia. These health issues can be avoided by genetically testing the parents, which is something reputable breeders usually do. When improperly raised puppies might have behavioral issues and can cause a lot of damage if they bite someone. A good breeder will have their dogs pass a temperament test. German Shepherd Dog Price While most dogs in shelters are adults, adopting a German Shepherd is a great way to find a dog without supporting unethical breeding. Sometimes these hardworking shepherd dogs are given up because they are very energetic. Not everyone is able to take care of a dog that needs a lot of attention and exercise. Some people buy a German Shepherd puppy without understanding the work involved in caring for this breed. Why Are They So Expensive? Breeding a healthy and well-behaved German Shepherd puppy is not easy! It is not as simple as crossing German Shepherds together. However, if you want a puppy of good temperament that is genetically healthy, there are other costs involved in the breeding and raising. This is especially important for a German Shepherd. You do not want a puppy that grows up to be aggressive or that suffers from mobility issues due to hip and elbow dysplasia. Papers A paperless German Shepherd puppy will be the cheapest. Typically breeders invest as little as possible in these pups. You get a puppy just how it is, without knowing its pedigree or background. A puppy with health certifications, temperament test results, and registration papers costs more than this. However, those papers will be beneficial not just for you, but also the puppy. This means your puppy meets the breed standard and is a purebred dog. The last thing you want is to buy a German Shepherd wolf-mix thinking it is purebred. Veterinarian Visits Reputable breeders not only genetically health test the parents, but they will also take the puppy to see a vet before 8 weeks for a basic health check. During these visits breeders will also have the puppies vaccinated, dewormed and placed on preventatives. When you buy a German Shepherd puppy from a reputable breeder, they will offer you a health guarantee. Most will also be able to provide you proof that the puppy has passed a temperament test. Training Some breeders also take the time to socialize and train their puppies. Many experienced breeders have a specialized training program that begins the process of potty training and basic obedience. This will mean you have an easier time housetraining your puppy, but you will have to pay for their efforts! These are all good signs that the puppy you are buying is of good quality. This will mean you are more likely to avoid any temperament issues or having to pay for vet visits to diagnose and treat hip and elbow dysplasia. Bloodlines Breeders who focus on breeding championship bloodlines will charge more for their puppies. A family might not need such a high-quality German Shepherd. All they need is a healthy and well-behaved puppy that will bring them years of happiness. However, there are many people who need a working dog or show dog. The most expensive dogs are those that are bred to be champions or protective and hard-working. Some breeders spend thousands of dollars just training a world class service dog. A family friendly guard dog with a protective temperament is not easy to breed consistently. Breeders have to factor in not just the genetics, but also the temperament and training. Origin The most expensive types of German Shepherds are those that are imported directly from Germany. Breeders must pay to stud and import these dogs which is not cheap. Since the German Shepherd breed originated in Germany, breeders in the US import dogs from Germany to breed puppies with a purebred lineage. Breeding in Europe is more regulated so the bloodlines are better protected. These puppies are known as European German Shepherds and are slightly different. They are smaller, have straighter backs and brighter coat colors. Some people think they look similar to a belgian malinois. Most European dogs are bred to be working dogs, while American dogs are more frequently bred for companionship. This is the same for American and German Rottweilers and American vs. European Dobermans. All of these breeder will be able to provide: Pedigree and kennel club registration. Documents that certify the puppy is free of any disease and has been checked by a veterinarian. A health warranty. Health records that guarantee the parents are genetically healthy and will not pass on elbow or hip dysplasia. These German Shepherd breeders all breed their puppies in accordance with the breed standard. None of them will sell puppies that are not registered with the American Kennel Club. Another good place to start looking for breeders is the American Kennel Club marketplace. Many of these puppies are bred to be family dogs and come with their papers. As you start looking into more well-known breeders or those that produce dogs of championship or working bloodlines, then the price of a German Shepherd starts to increase. Julia was a German Shepherd bred by the Harrison K-9 facility, highly trained in protection. She could also understand commands in three different languages. Her intelligence, as well as her ability to protect, were why she was priced so highly. Julia was bought by a billionaire businessman in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The rarest coat color is panda, which is why it is also the most expensive. These German Shepherds are black and white. It is a piebald pattern where the black coat is splotched with large patches of white. Some puppies can have other colors like tan, instead of white. Using a variety of German sheepdogs as his foundation stock, von Stephanitz developed a distinctive breed in a very short period of time, due in large part to the authoritarian practices of the German dog fancy at that time. Von Stephanitz emphasized utility and intelligence in his breeding program, enabling the German Shepherd Dog to switch easily from herding duties to other fields of work, particularly military and police work. All things German were shunned and popularity slumped. After the war, however, movie star Rin-tin-tin stimulated interest in the breed again. Curly tails are one of the most recognizable characteristics of the breed. It is considered to be an important aspect of their overall appearance. The importance of this feature can be judged by the fact that it is taken into consideration in dog shows. Over the years, several theories have emerged about the reason for this trait. The most popular of these reasons are given below. Protection — Some experts believe that the curled tail may have been a natural adaptation to protect the tail from injury. It makes a lot of sense given the hunting or working background of these pups. The tight curl of the tail would prevent it from getting caught or damaged while the dog is in motion. Cosmetic Feature — According to some dog enthusiasts, the curled tail is simply a cosmetic feature that has been perpetuated through breeding. In ancient times, the Chinese bred pugs to have this feature because they believed that it was a symbol of good luck and prosperity. Pugs with curly tails were considered more desirable than those with straight tails. This preference for curled tails led to the perpetuation of the trait through selective breeding. What Foods are Toxic to Pugs? Click here to learn more. Do All Pugs have Curly Tails? No, it is not a guarantee that every pug will have a curly tail. Although the tightly curled tail is considered a breed standard, some pugs may have straight or semi-curled tails. This variation in tail shape is due to the presence or absence of the gene that causes the tail to curl. Some pugs may have inherited the gene that causes the tail to curl while others may not have. The presence or absence of a curled tail does not affect the health or well-being of the dog. Therefore, it should not be used as a criterion for determining the quality of a pug. For these reasons, you should not consider the tail shape the determining factor while adopting a pet. Why are Pugs So Clingy? In general, pugs are born with straight tails and the curl begins to develop as they grow and mature. Some pugs may start to show signs of a curl as early as a few weeks old, while others may not develop a full curl until they are several months old. The process of tail curling can be affected by several factors, like genetics, nutrition, and overall health. The dogs that are born with a strong genetic predisposition towards a curled tail will develop a curl more quickly. Another important factor that can quicken the speed of curling is the diet of your pooch. Well-nourished pugs are known for developing a curl more quickly than those that are malnourished. Pugs are known for their tightly curled tails, which is a defining feature of the breed. This is a natural behavior and is nothing to be concerned about. The reason for this is that when a pug is asleep, the muscles that keep the tail curled relax, causing the tail to uncurl. Additionally, some pugs may uncurl their tails as a sign of comfort and relaxation. This can be seen as a sign that the pug is at ease and comfortable in its environment. Pugs will still have curled tails while they are awake and active. As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. Compared to other canine counterparts, Pugs have a very pronounced spinal deviation, causing that peculiar tail curl. Most mutts have symmetrical tail bones, resulting in a straight as a railway tail. Not Pugs! These have an asymmetrical bone structure, where bone columns are shaped like a prism, very wedge-like. In some instances, it might take your adorable pup to be delayed in tail-curling. Nevertheless, by the age of .It is still learning the motor skills it needs to survive, therefore tail-curling sometimes comes later. The same is true about senior Pugs: as they age, all the muscles are slowly losing their elasticity, becoming weaker. Except for maybe making sure your pooch is well taken care of and comes in for its yearly check-ups. Especially when you start reprimanding your mischievous buddy, your tone of voice changes. A Pug instantly picks up on that, knowing that this is not a situation it wants to be in. The reason is that your pal is completely relaxed while playing with that neighborhood dog in its dream. Hence all its muscles are resting, including the tail ones. Its Tail Is Injured: a very common occurrence in households with small children. If you have young kids in your household, please supervise them at play with your other baby…that has fur. Children must be taught that dogs are not toys, and they have to be gentle with them. Excessive Swimming: got a flat-faced swimmer in the house? Then it is almost a guarantee its tail is going to be straight as water has this effect on it. Pooches need them to stay balanced in the water and not drown. This causes over exhaustion on a hard-working tailbone and a hound straightens in an attempt to relax. Any cold water swimming? Normally, it goes hand-in-hand with the above-mentioned excessive swimming episodes. Your dog gets out of the water, gets really cold and almost immediately its tail becomes limber. Scientists have been arguing for a while about why this happens. Most likely it has something to do with the blood flow restriction to the tail muscles, thus making it stiffer. It is especially relevant in cases with young puppies. Yep, crazy tail-wagging would do that to any respectable pup. You will see happy wagging again very soon! I hope that you got the answer to your question and found the information covered very useful. Unless your Pug is tired, sleeping, or just simply getting old, a reason for a limp tail might be serious. If you have noticed that your best friend stopped tail-wagging for good and it has been like this for quite a while, it is time to pay your trusted vet a visit. Family Dog Expert Author Hi there! It is very distinct and its shape and curling is rarely seen in other breeds. This breed has what is known as a 'corkscrew' or 'screw' tail. In this section, we are going to go over details about a Pug dog's tail, including: At what age a Pug puppy starts wagging his tail Different types of Pug dog tails What it means if the tail uncurls Limp tail- a particular type of injury Wagging We received an email from an owner who was worried about her puppy: Question: "Do Pugs wag their tail? My Pug gets only a little movement. It is down a lot, so I am wondering if they can or do wag their tail? First of all, we do not know how old your Pug puppy is, however most dogs do not begin wagging their tail until they are about 7 weeks old. If your Pug dog is still a puppy, under 7 weeks old, your dog should begin wagging the tail soon and there is nothing to worry about. If your dog is much older than 7 weeks, we do suggest having your dog looked at. Tail wagging is a very important means of communication for a dog; though this breed is limited to an extent by how the tail is set high and the cartilage is curved. The tail serves other purposes as well, such as providing a dog with balance and helping dogs to swim. A Pug uses his tail to express emotions and feelings even if it does not swing back and forth with wide arching oscillation that is seen with dogs that have long, loose tails. Tommy meets the breed standard of a single curled tail Photo courtesy of owner: Srinivas from Dubai, UAE Therefore, if there is a health problem that is preventing your Pug from moving his tail, it is important to find out what is wrong and see if it can be corrected. Breed standards call out for a curled tail. While the amount of curling will vary from dog to dog and can improve as a Pug matures, this is a defining physical feature. The double curl is perfection. Double curl highly desirable. As you can see, both descriptions are very similar. In essence, the tail should curl tightly and if the tail has a double curl, this is judged as more favorable in the show ring. Most Pugs have a tail that not only curls, but lies over the back. This is an element of the breed standard and is the desired look. With this said, there are some Pugs that have a loose tail. We'll dive into this ahead. Do All Pugs have curly tails? Since the tail is a bone and cartilage appendage of the spine, the physical trait of it curling is due to a deviation in the spine in which the vertebrae is wedged-shaped, causing the tail to curl when held naturally. This trait has been bred into the breed for thousands of years and is an extension of the spine. Therefore, just about all Pugs do have a curly tail. There are some Pugs that have a loose tail. This may be the case for one of several reasons: 1 All Pugs may uncurl the tail at one time or another; some do this much more often and for young puppies it may happen a lot. The tail may tighten up during the maturity and growth stage. Some breeders focus very much on the tail, trying to achieve the very desirable 'double curl'; this makes for a strong, curled tail even if the double spiral is not achieved. If two Pugs with weak, looser tails are paired this can produce a litter in which those puppies have little curling. The dog is still able to be registered and so forth yet since it is not the preferred look of the breed, this is considered a major fault in the show ring. Let's take a look at different types of tails that a Pug can have: This young adolescent Pug puppy has a loose tail that is flipped over his back. This is a sign of a weak tail set but is not uncommon with pet non-show Pugs. As this pup matures, the tail may tighten up and have a curl. A double curled tail is not possible with this Pug; that sort of trait would be seen at a young age. A nice curled tail. This is the type of tail you will most often see with a Pug dog. It will naturally lift over the back and have one curl in which the tail swirls over itself in one solidly held loop. As you can see it has one large curl and then the end of the tail swirls over once more and it is held tightly. Some double tails make two complete circles of the same length. This swirly feature is not all that common and is considered to be highly desirable in all major kennel organization show rings. No worries if your Pug does not have a double curl, it's not overly prevalent. How many Pugs have two double curls? Two complete loops is the exception, not the norm. Is it normal for a Pug's tail to uncurl? Sometimes a Pug's tail will become uncurled. This happens most often with puppies but it can happen with older Pugs as well. It can happen when a puppy sleeps and the body is very relaxed or when a Pug knows that he did something wrong had an accident, chewed up your shoes and is reacting to the shame he feels. With some, the tail will curl and uncurl all throughout the day. This is not uncommon and for most Pugs, the tail will tighten up and stay curled as a puppy matures into an adult. What does it mean if the tail suddenly goes limp? If a Pug with a normally curled tail suddenly has a much looser tail this may be a sign that the dog is ill. Other signs may be that the dog is extra tired, wanting to retreat, a sudden decrease in appetite , etc. This should be brought to the attention of the veterinarian. This may also be a matter of a condition called "limp tail", which means that the bone at the base has been injured in some way, causing it to hang and not able to be moved by the dog or the dog resists moving it as doing so causing pain. This is usually diagnosed by a veterinarian by taking x-rays. Anti-inflammatory medications, pain medication and bed rest often result in normal use after a while. What does it mean if a Pug holds his tail down or off to a funny angle? While injury to the tail should be investigated, if a Pug holds his tail at a weird angle, the most common reason would be enlarged anal glands that need to be expressed. This is best done by a vet or groomer, especially if the glands have been engorged for a long time. This can be exceedingly uncomfortable for a dog; the swelling and discomfort can cause a Pug's tail to drop or to be held in an odd way. All rights reserved. This was a question that I asked myself after we had already got Mindy our black Pug. The wedge-shaped vertebrae also are known hemivertebrae causes the tail to curl. Their signature curl is what makes these breeds so popular. In fact, almost all pugs have curly tails. You never want to pull on their tail, because it is a part of their spine and it could cause them damage. I personally think this is what adds to the cuteness of the Pug. Believe it or not, your Pugs tail will give you signals of how they are feeling. A Puppy will usually develop their natural curl s within the first few weeks of being born. Regardless of what you think, they are not born with curly tails. Puppies are known to start wagging their tails when they are around 7 weeks old. Most of the Pugs that you see will have curly tails. This trait comes from hundreds of years of selective breeding and it is an extension of the spine. There are some Pugs that have a loose or limp tail. Your Pug is not feeling well or experiencing some health problems. As your Pug ages, their tail will not be as curly as it was when they were younger. Young puppies are known to uncurl their tail a lot. As they age, their tail will tighten up and stay curled more often. Your dog may have an injury to their tail. Poor breeding practices. However, if two Pugs with loose tails are mated, it can produce a litter of puppies that have little curling. Their tails may uncurl when they are sleeping because their bodies become so relaxed. However, in case you want to know, here is what each curl will look like and what it represents. Pug double curl Tail: Your Pug tails curl will have a really tight curl that looks like a cinnamon roll. This type of curl rarely ever straightens completely, even when your Pug is sleeping. These are the types of curls that are common among show dogs and occur with careful breeding practices. Single Curled Tail: This is the most common Pug curl and it has just one natural curl that swirls over the back with one swift loop. Most of the times, there is no reason to be concerned with it. However, just like kids, they like to test the waters sometimes to see what they can get away with. This is totally normal as the muscles around the tail relax while they are sleeping. Just like humans, dogs can feel nervousness, sadness, tiredness, guilt and etc. If their tail is down, it could be that they are feeling any of these expressions. Unless it persists for a few days. She loved chewing her Kong Toys and they would keep her busy for hours. Their tails will usually go back to the curled state after they are done with those activities. Age One of the worst things about being a pet owner is that your dog will eventually age and with that age comes health issues. It was sad to see her struggle to get around the house. Unfortunately, this is something that every pet owner will face over time. You may want to contact your local vet to schedule an appointment with them. This Pug pet insurance will help cut down on your vet costs and will ensure that you can take them for their regular checkups. The muscles around the tail tend to lose their ability to contract to produce the curl. An injury can also cause your Pug to chew her tail until it bleeds. Straight limp tails are also extremely common in older Pugs. As your Pug ages, they lose their muscle tenacity to keep their tails curled. Should You Contact Your Vet? Most of the times, the uncurling issue is not a big deal, as long as it returns to the natural curl state. I know that unexpected vet bills can be expensive. In fact, here are just a few of other dogs with curly tails. Although the Pug breed has a shorter-looking tail than many other dog breeds, they do have tails. Pug tails come in many different shapes. But, many Pugs are bred to have very curly tails — with breed standards idealizing a double curl tail. Some will have a very tight curl, and others might be much looser, almost without any real curl to them. Surgery is often required to deal with this. Do Pugs Have Tails? Pugs do have tails! But, their tails are usually quite curly, which can make them look shorter and different to other dog tails. Even amongst Pugs, tail appearance will vary, but your Pug will always have a tail. Docking is not common for the Pug breed. Pugs with this issue will usually have a much less defined tail than unaffected dogs. This condition is also sometimes called ingrown tail or corkscrew tail. Screw tail is a vertebral malformation where vertebrae are abnormally structured or fused together, creating a very tightly curled tail surrounded by deep skin folds. But, we will learn a little more about this further on in the guide. Not all Pugs will have the idealized double curl tail. Some will have a more loosely curled tail, and some might not have much of a curl at all. The above breed standards are the main reason that Pugs are still bred to have curly tails. Over time, this trait was seen as appealing. And, when certain traits are popular, breeders will continue producing puppies with those traits. This is why Pugs have also developed increasingly flat faces throughout their history. Earlier versions of the breed would likely be quite unrecognisable nowadays, with a longer, healthier face and a less tightly curled tail. Since breed standards state that a double curl is best, many breeders will breed Pugs with the curliest tails to try and increase the likelihood of puppies inheriting this trait. Double Curl A double curl tail is the type that most breed standards idealize. Double curl tails will have one larger curl, with a smaller curl within. Ideally, these curls will each form a full circle, curled tightly around one another. Single Curl A single curl tail is much more common than the desirable double curl. This tail type has one curl that swoops over their back in a single loop. The tightness of this curl may vary from one individual dog to another. Weak Set Tail A weak set tail can look similar to a single curl tail, but will be much looser. This applies to Pugs of all tail types, whether they will grow up to have a weak set tail or the highly coveted double curl! So, if all Pugs are born with straight tails, when do Pugs tails curl? Generally, most Pugs will start to develop a curl in their tail from around two weeks old. Although, this process can sometimes take a couple of months. Some Pugs will have a little curly tail by the time they come home with you, and for others, it may take a little longer. Do Pugs Wag Their Tails? Even though Pug tails can look a bit different to some other dog tails, they are still used for that all important canine communication. So, like any other dog, your Pug will wag his or her tail to show when they are happy. Their tails are also a good way to see when they are feeling nervous or scared! Most Pug puppies will start to wag their tails at around 7 weeks. So, by the time they go home to their new owners, they will be wagging their little tails all over the place! Pug puppies may uncurl their tail more frequently than adult Pugs. But, a limp Pug tail can also be a sign of a health issue, like inflammation, an injury, or even limber tail. Some Pugs may also let their tail hang limp if they are scared or unhappy. They may also let their tails uncurl when they are sleeping, or when they are fully relaxed around the house. And of course, not all Pugs have overly curly tails. Also known as screw tail and ingrown tail, this issue can cause recurring infections, bad smells, and lots of discomfort for your Pug. Surgical correction and medical management are the two most common ways of correcting it. But, both are expensive, and can be intense for your dog. Corkscrew tail is common in breeds with flat faces, like the Pug. In some extreme cases, this issue can stop your Pug from moving around normally, and even going to the toilet normally. If your Pug appears to experience regular discomfort around their tail area, if there are excessive skin folds that tend to gather dirt, or if your Pug gets recurring infections around their tail, they may be struggling with corkscrew tail. In fact, it might cause them quite a lot of pain to have their tail touched. So, if your Pug is normally happy to have their tail touched, but suddenly starts reacting, take them for a check up at the vet office. Associate tail touching with rewards so it becomes a fun, positive experience. And, you will be able to identify problems faster. Caring for a Pug Tail Pug tail care will be slightly different to some other dog breeds. Since Pugs have curly tails, often with some quite tight skin folds, there is a higher chance of moisture collecting and infections building. This can even lead to some painful and irritating skin problems. When you are bathing your Pug, make sure that you dry their tail gently but thoroughly. Leaving moisture around their tail can lead to infections and skin problems, like those above. This can be very uncomfortable for your little dog, and can cause a tail injury. He was from a Champion Bloodline. For me, he was a better lapdog than he would have been as a show dog. Every night he won first prize for curling up on the couch with me! There is no need to fear until the tail stays straight for a long time. Being disciplined or ashamed Pugs uncurl their tail if they are being disciplined. Your puppy might straighten his Pug tail between his legs if he has done something naughty. Maybe you caught your puppy chewing your shoe. You see the chewed up shoe and respond with a cross look and use a different tone. I would love to think that my Pug knows he did something wrong and feels guilty. Probably not so. He is responding to your body language, not his action. So guess what? Next time he gets bored, he may chew up another shoe. Sleep Having an uncurled Pug tail while sleeping is also common. After all, you need to have experience training a dog. Once you learn the methods to train them effectively, your dog can learn fast. These dogs also tend to be aggressive. This protectiveness of their possessions may also cause snappiness. Nutrition Dogs need proper nutrition. Feed your bulldach with protein-rich and high-quality kibbles. The protein source should be the first ingredient on the list. But you should ask the vet for the most suitable plan. Normally, though, a bulldach will need one cup of dog food per day, split into two meals. Besides food, be sure that your dog has access to clean water. Health and Care A bulldach dog has an average lifespan of 10 to 14 years. However, they can go beyond that if taken proper care of. Ensure that both parents are in perfect health, or the pups will inherit their illnesses. Make sure you get a proper grooming brush or mitt since their fur is short and thin, and a brush can easily damage their skin. Since they are prone to skin issues, proper shampooing and care of their skin about once a month will do wonders to help keep them comfortable and happy. This should ideally be done every day or every other day. The same goes for their ears. Since all of these can be common areas for infections and bacteria build-up, wipes are crucial. Dental hygiene and nails Teeth brushing and nail clipping are other focus points. This will help them meet their nutritional needs and ensure that they have adequate support for joint care in omega-3s and protein in just the right amounts. As far as exercise is concerned, these are pretty chill dogs! You may need to convince them to go out and exercise for that 30 minutes that they require per day. Bulldach cons Separation anxiety Can be aggressive with same-sex animals With that intelligence that is such a pro, you also are dealing with stubbornness. Training will be challenging but essential. More on that in a second, too. These dogs are also known for separation anxiety. Lastly, there are some Bulldachs that are going to be problems when it comes to aggression. Recently, breeders combined the spunky attitude of the dachshund and the calm and brave demeanour of the bulldog in the Dachshund Bulldog Mix. In this article, you are going to learn all the basics you need to know about this unique crossbreed. The Dachshund Bulldog Mix might not seem like a natural cross at first, but once you hear about the complimenting traits, you will see the appeal! What is a Dachshund Bulldog mix? The short answer about what is the Dachshund Bulldog Mix would be that it is the result of crossbreeding between the bulldog and the dachshund. However, to truly understand the characteristics of this mix, you need to understand the parental breeds that go into it. Just like human children, different traits from both parents go into offsprings. Dachshund Parental Breed The dachshund otherwise called as teckel, dackel, or wiener dog is a breed that has been around for centuries. Weiner dogs originated in Germany. It will come as no surprise then that the dachshund is part of the hound group and is known for being bred for hunting. Currently, if you check with the American Kennel Club , you will see that the dachshund is the 12th most popular dog breed in the United States. They have prominent personalities despite their small size, so it is not surprising, sausage dogs are adored all around the world. Bulldog Parental Breed The bulldog, also called the British bulldog, currently ranks even higher on the AKC popularity list, coming in at the 5th most popular breed. The image of a fierce, muscular dog has been used for many groups and causes. You also commonly see the bulldog depicted as a mascot for the United States Marine Corps. This use of imagery is a testament to the toughness and loyalty of the breed. Breed experts believe that Bulldogs first became a real breed in England around the 13th century. At the time, blood sport was popular, so these mighty dogs were bred for the bull-baiting. Thankfully blood sport is not a popular pastime today, and Bulldogs became great family dogs. This cross is also a confident and highly adaptable dog. You can also expect your Dachshund Bulldog mix to have an instinct for hunting and chasing animals, digging, burrowing. It will also be quite protective of their owners, and possibly a loud barker. On the downside, this crossbreed can be stubborn and grumpy due to the fact that both parents have these character traits in their blood. Dachshund Bulldog Mix Physical Appearance As with many crossbreeds, the appearance of the Dachshund Bulldog Mix can vary from one individual cross to the next. However, as this mix is bred more consistently, it is easier to pick out traits that are happening more often and refine them. So once more, we should first look at the parent breeds of the Dachshund Bulldog Mix as a guide for appearance. The offspring can take on any of the physical traits of parental breeds. They have a large head, with a very short muzzle. Bulldogs have deep dark eyes that are set further down and apart on their forehead then other breeds. The lower jaw will generally stick out from the lower one, giving them a distinct and cure grin. Bulldogs are built for power and work, so their bodies are sturdy and muscular. This position of the legs gives them a distinct walk. Bulldogs should stand around 16 inches and should way between Lbs, depending on the gender. Dachshund Physical Characteristics Dachshunds look very different from Bulldogs. The first thing to note is a definite weight difference. These spunky little dogs come in at between lbs. The second big difference is there are three types of dachshunds as compared to one bulldog variety. Dachshunds come in Smooth, Wired, and Long-haired coats. There are also two different sizes for sausage dogs, — Standard and Miniature. The most distinctive attribute of the dachshund is short legs and a long back. One of the cute nicknames for this breed comes from that long back, the Weiner dog. This breed should have short legs that bow slightly, and a long muzzle for hunting. On the other side, this mix will often get the deep-set dark eyes of the bulldog. Muzzle length is the area in which these crossbreeds tend to vary significantly. Some puppies will have a longer nose, and some will have the snub nose of the bulldog. As the breed is refining its traits; however, it is becoming more common to have a muzzle that is in-between the two kinds. As well as that, this mix comes in a variety of colours, that it can inherit from both parents. In the photo below, you see the beautiful dapple coat that can occur in the dachshund bulldog mix. Moreover, you should always remember that training goes into helping the character of any dog. So, make sure you pick for traits you would like, but also commit to properly socializing your new family member. Dachshunds are very spunky, outgoing little dogs. They have big hearts, and they will take on wild animals or other dogs that are much larger than they are. Teckels are incredibly loyal dogs, and this makes them fantastic for families. They are alert and make good watchdogs even though they are small. Dachshunds are super intelligent and can be stubborn, so you must be persistent with training them. These sweet, smart dogs can be destructive. They love to dig holes if left unattended. Bulldogs have lovely, gentle personalities. They are reliable dogs that you can depend on to be predictable. The breed has been bred to love to be around people. Bulldogs will go out of their way to get attention from their family. Bulldogs are fantastic with kids, and they get along with other animals. You do need to ensure that you socialize them with other dogs early. Some individual bulldogs can be aggressive to other dogs if not socialized. It is the brave heart of the bulldog and their desire to protect their family. The Bulldach is going to be a dog with a lot of love for their family. They are brave dogs, with a lot of courage and loyalty. Dachshund Bulldog mixes do need to be kept busy; otherwise, the Dachshund ingrained instinct of digging or burrowing may come out. Also, as mentioned earlier, the Dachshund Bulldog cross can display signs of aggressiveness and overprotectiveness. These inherited traits can become a problem if not tackled properly. As humans, we always want to know how long our new friend is likely to be with us. It is a little harder to determine the life expectancy of the Dachshund Bulldog mix because the parent breeds have entirely different life spans. Dachshunds are a smaller breed and tend to have a longer lifespan if kept healthy. These spunky dogs will live from 12 to 17 years. While Bulldogs as broader chested, short-nosed dogs tend towards a lifespan that is not as long. You will find that bulldogs tend to have a lifespan of years in general. Knowing the lifespan of the parent breeds can help in calculating how long your Bulldach will live. So far, most Dachshund Bulldog mixes tend to live years. Remember, the best way to keep your canine friend healthy is to have regular checkups with your vet. The best way to help your dachshund live longer? Watch our video to find out! Our studs are all proven in the field and live as part of the family. They all have strong proven pedigrees and are some of the most extensively health tested studs available anywhere. This is one of the best chocolate pedigrees we have ever seen! Master titled as a 2 year old! Mojo is the result of over 4 years of planning and research. He is the first chocolate dog in over 10 generations. Mojo has a loaded pedigree and is an excellent out cross option for females with more traditional chocolate pedigrees. He is currently in Texas training with Justin Drake. Houdini will be coming home for a couple of months this winter, before heading back south to finish his Master Hunter title. After he completes his MH title, Houdini will be available for stud services. We focus on producing the best all around Lab puppies from champion Field Bred and Hunt Test bloodlines that are healthy and free of hereditary disorders. Our dogs are selected for their natural hunting instincts, desire to please, intelligence, versatility, gentle temperaments, ability to compete in hunt tests and field trials, train-ability, pedigree, health clearances, and attractive physical features. We take pride in our dogs and with our careful research and selection processes, our puppies should satisfy the most challenging buyer. Our labs are bred to be working dogs and have the potential to excel in any direction. They are also bred to have wonderful dispositions and make great family companions. All of our dogs live in our home and are part of our family. We actively use them for upland and waterfowl hunting, and have started running them in AKC Hunt Tests. We do everything we can to try and ensure we produce healthy puppies. We go above and beyond when it comes to health testing and it shows. We have also started the process of testing for OFA Thyroid. The results of all of this health testing is readily available online on the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals website as well as on the Paw Print Genetics Pedigree Database. We only offer a limited number of litters of puppies per year. We focus on quality and not quantity and believe in having a personal touch. All of our puppies are born and raised in our home and are thoroughly socialized. Our puppies are actually born in our bedroom and stay there until they are between 3 and 4 weeks of age. This way we can ensure that they are safe, clean and comfortable at all times. Not to mention the countless hours of attention they get during the day and late into each night. Once they are 3 to 4 weeks old, we will move them into one of our two puppy nursery rooms where we can expand their box and begin the introduction to potty training. We LOVE our puppies and it shows in their care. We will only breed litters when we can guarantee that each puppy will receive daily individual love and attention. When we have multiple litters on the ground we hire in special daily helpers to ensure that our strict standards of care are always met. Our puppy program is extensive and comprehensive, yet we are continually fine-tuning and looking at ways to incorporate more. At a bare minimum this program includes: early neurological stimulation called ENS or Biosensor , early scent introduction ESI , introduction to crates, car rides, birds or bird wings, gunfire from a distance, water weather permitting , outdoor adventures in different types of environments, daily loud noises, introduction to potty training and lots of socialization with adults, kids and other dogs. We strive to give every puppy the best start possible. By the time they are ready to go to their new homes at 8 weeks of age, each puppy should be well prepared for whatever direction their new family takes them. Our very first litter was in and then we took a short hiatus from breeding until .Since resuming, we have had tremendous success with our very limited number of litters. The majority of our puppies have gone to homes where they live as part of the family and have proven themselves as exceptional hunting-working-competition dogs.
