Handler and dog must work together to have a successful outcome. The pinnacle accomplishment for any dog running in field trials is to earn a Field Champion FC title designation or an Amateur Field Champion AFC designation — or for some, it might be both. Your dog runs, finds them, and retrieves them as quickly as he can while responding to hand signals or whistles from you or your handler. Contestants are judged on various traits they are born with including a strong memory for marks, intelligence, perseverance, and more. Section 7. Master Hunting Test. Dogs shall be tested in a minimum of five hunting situations as follows: multiple land marks, multiple water marks, multiple marks on water and land, a land blind and a water blind at least one that shall be a double blind in any combination. There shall be at least three series. At least one of the series shall include a walk-up. The 3 falls must be presented before a dog is sent to retrieve any mark or blind. During a double set of marks 2 falls Master judges shall include additional elements of testing, i. Train ability must be evaluated more stringently than in Senior Hunting Tests. While distance is not crucial, Master Hunting situations are more severe and difficult than Senior Hunting situations. A dog that displays unwillingness must be scored relatively lower on Marking and Perseverance than in the Senior Hunting Test. A dog that goes to the area of the fall and finds the bird unaided shall be scored appreciably higher than a dog that must be handled to a bird. Master Hunting dogs must exhibit those qualities expected in a truly finished and experienced hunting companion. The five qualifying progeny must earn a combined total of 48 points. Two of the five required progeny MAY have a combination of a six point title and a five point title or two six point titles. Points are not cumulative within a category and only the highest achievement earned in each category is recognized. Additional points may be earned by qualifying progeny. All titles below the five point level will only count towards the OS if earned by already qualified progeny. Should the titles of the five qualifying progeny not total 48 points, then additional points including those titles worth less than five points may be counted for those dogs already recognized as qualifying progeny by the point value of other titles earned. GRCA will not track the accumulation of points, only titles. Home to rich rivers and clear blue beaches. Our dogs love to play at and visit many local spots. For two weeks after the fluffy arrivals Si and I share sleeping next to the mother dog and puppies. We find we have enough sleep for ourselves by doing this shiftwork for the first 14 days and it means no puppy is unsupported. Our young adult, teenager and preschool sons also spend cuddle time with the puppies so your furbaby gets lots of learning time with men, children and their friends at the age appropriate time for your puppy. We develop a close bond with each fluffy puppy from the moment they are birthed and I assist with the delivery. Birth support means that each puppy feeds straight after being born to give them the necessary colostrum for health. Immediate feeding helps reduce stress hormones in your puppy. A human trust bond give them an attached confidence which is a caring start to life. This helps them feel safe in a den environment. I follow with closed crate training from 5 weeks old with some of their siblings. At 7 weeks they learn to have short periods of time in their crate without their littermates and practise this until they go to you at 8 weeks old. Voice marker training and Click training begins when your puppy is six weeks old. Your puppy learns to sit, touch and recall. We share the same words suggested to you to use so that puppy is familiar with the force free praise that encourages them to want to obey. Prior to your puppy leaving Bellawai you will have emailed to you 3 training videos to help with the basic training of your puppy using force free techniques. These videos are of our stud dog Vincent as a puppy and present with some of our puppies from a previous litter. These videos sent prior to the arrival of your puppy will help you become familiar with the gentle training style we use. Bonding with your puppy prior to their arrival is important to us. They were initially bred as herding and guard dogs. There are no official records of when pituitary dwarfism first appeared in German Shepherds. Dwarf German Shepherds are linked with faulty breeding techniques employed by puppy mills or backyard breeders. Image Credit: Werner B. They have built a reputation for being loyal, loving, and hard-working. They form strong bonds with their humans and thrive in family life. German Shepherds are versatile working dogs, naturally vigilant and protective, with a strong sense of responsibility. They excel as guard dogs and have been used by the military and police as service, search, and rescue dogs. Most dogs with pituitary dwarfism are euthanized and do not reach their fifth birthdays. The stunted growth of the dwarf German Shepherd is one of the most noticeable traits of this dog. However, their problems go much deeper than just their size. Dwarf German Shepherds suffer from severe growth issues, such as the abnormal development of the joints, spine, and bones. As a result, they risk experiencing pain and instability throughout their lives. Some dogs also go on to experience paralysis in their lifetime. They Suffer From Many Health Problems Dwarf German Shepherds can develop coat and skin problems; their soft puppy coat will shed, but they rarely develop an adult coat, and their skin becomes rough and scaly. They can also suffer from secondary hypothyroidism and renal failure. The hormonal abnormalities might also result in temperamental and behavioral problems such as aggression and extreme separation anxiety. They Can Be Pricey While not many owners go out looking to purchase a dwarf German Shepherd, some breeders might unscrupulously sell you one and advertise it as a miniature German Shepherd. They Have to Receive Treatment Pituitary dwarfism is treated with hormone therapy, and it is necessary if your dog is to live beyond adolescence. Thyroid and growth hormone treatments are also recommended. They Can Lead Fulfilling, Happy Lives Despite everything they go through, these dogs are exactly like any other dog; they love their families and are utterly devoted to their owners. Dwarf German Shepherds are unique dogs that require a special type of care from their owners. They have many health and behavioral problems that can make their care challenging, and their lives are short and sometimes filled with pain. There are treatments available, but they are still in their infancy. They need a very special person to provide the life they deserve, for however long that life may be. Conclusion The dwarf German Shepherd is a beautiful dog that looks like a puppy for their entire life. Behind this adorable exterior lie years of treatment and pain. They can be challenging to own, but dogs with dwarfism can lead full lives as long as their families know exactly what to expect. Related Reads:. Life Span Did You Know? A Miniature German Shepherd is a cross between a German Shepherd and a smaller dog breed that is meant to result in a smaller version of a German Shepherd. Although these Mini Shepherds can inherit any combination of traits from their parent breeds, they tend to be energetic, intelligent dogs that bond closely with their families and are affectionate with them. Miniature German Shepherds make great family dogs. They may be hardworking while on a job, but they have a playful spirit while relaxing with their family. They also tend to get along well with children and other dogs in the family. Although they tend to do well with smaller pets they have been raised with, they do have a high prey drive. Mini German Shepherds are also protective and alert. They will bark to alert you and will be naturally suspicious of strangers. Proper socialization and training early on can help make sure barking does not become a nuisance and will help them open up to strangers once introduced. Miniature German Shepherds are highly adaptable dogs. They tend to be a better fit for homes with fenced yards where they can run. But, they can adapt just as well to apartments as long as they get the exercise, mental stimulation, and attention they need. They do well in most climates, but are sensitive to heat. Because they bond so closely with their families and want to be near them, they do not do well with long periods of alone time. Mixed-breed dogs can sometimes be healthier than purebred dogs because of genetic diversity. However, this is not a guarantee. They could inherit no conditions common to the parent breeds, but they could also inherit some or all of them. So, make sure you are asking them about the health and genetic history of both of the parents. You can also ask about any health tests or clearances that have been done. For the Miniature German Shepherd, potential health conditions to be aware of include progressive retinal atrophy, hypothyroidism, epilepsy, and hip dysplasia. Because of their body shape, they are also at risk for bloat. Although Miniature German Shepherds are highly intelligent dogs that pick up on things quickly and are eager to please, they can be difficult for first-time dog owners to handle on their own. Their high energy, working dog instincts, thirst for learning, and need for structured training can be overwhelming for first-time dog owners. Because of this, puppy training classes are recommended if you are not an experienced dog owner. They help reinforce training, strengthen the bond you have with your dog, and also offer opportunities to socialize a puppy. In general, a Miniature German Shepherd will have a coat that sheds moderately year-round and heavier seasonally. Brushing a few times a week, daily brushing during seasonal shedding, and the occasional bath is usually sufficient for this coat type. If a Miniature German Shepherd has a Mini Poodle parent, there is a chance they could inherit the low-shedding Poodle coat. Weekly ear checks with careful cleanings as needed can help prevent ear infections. Although good dental care for dogs is essential, it is often overlooked. This is one of the reasons why gum disease is one of the most common health issues in older dogs. You can help protect your pup from painful dental diseases later in life by brushing their teeth or using an enzyme toothpaste every day and keeping up with regular vet visits. Although a Miniature German Shepherd may be smaller than a German Shepherd, they are still a high-energy dog with working dog instincts. In addition to having a job to do, these dogs also need daily walks plus playtime and time to run to be happy and healthy. If they like it, swimming can be a good low-impact activity while they are still growing. Once puppies finish growing , you can try higher-impact activities like hiking, running, training for dog sports, and more to see what they like. A fully-grown Miniature German Shepherd usually stands inches tall and weighs about 50 pounds. There can be some variation depending on the other parent breed in the cross, but meeting the mother dog in-person can give you a better idea of what size to expect in a Mini GSD. A Miniature German Shepherd generally lives for years. If the other parent crossed with a German Shepherd is a Standard Poodle, the result is a Shepadoodle. Lifespan Sociability One of the most important things to keep in mind before buying or adopting a Samoyed German Shepherd Mix puppy is that these dogs have a lot of energy. A combination of two working breeds, the Samoyed German Shepherd Mix always needs a job to do and loves staying active. Moreover, if you live in an apartment, the Samoyed German Shepherd Mix is not the right pet for you. He requires a spacious home with a large yard where he can run, explore, and play. This means that your dog could be a big shedder. Samoyeds Were Bred to Live in Tents The Samoyed was originally developed to be a companion dog for tent-dwelling nomads who lived in harsh, cold climates. They Love to Work Thanks to the long working heritage of both of his parent dog breeds , the Samoyed German Shepherd Mix has a hard work ethic and loves staying busy. Protective over his family, the Samoyed German Shepherd Mix can be shy around strangers. Ongoing socialization and training will transform your timid dog into a confident and obedient family friend. Extremely social, the Samoyed German Shepherd Mix cannot be left alone for long periods of time. He needs tons of mental stimulation and attention from his human pack. Are These Dogs Good for Families? This hybrid dog can be protective, playful, and also wary of strangers. To ensure your dog remains calm and confident around your kids, you must start socializing him with your family and strangers from day one. While this breed is typically good with other dogs and even cats, training will guarantee smooth integration into your multi-pet family. Feed your Samoyed German Shepherd Mix about three cups of premier quality kibble divided into two meals per day. This roughly equates to 15 to 30 pounds of dog food each month. Always ensure your pet has access to clean, fresh water. This dog is best suited for active individuals looking for a pet who can truly go the distance. The Samoyed German Shepherd Mix will love to tag along on your morning jog, weekend hike, or compete in an agility course with you. If you do not have the time or energy level to dedicate to properly exercising a Samoyed German Shepherd Mix, opt for a more laid-back breed. A highly intelligent dog that loves to please, your pet can learn basic commands and complicated tricks with ease. Positive reinforcement training works best for this dog. Shedding will drastically increase during the spring and summer months. To keep on top of loose hair, thoroughly brush your dog several times per week. Bathe him monthly, clean his teeth daily, and trim his nails as needed. To keep your Samoyed German Shepherd Mix looking his best, take him to a professional groomer several times throughout the year. Mixed breed dogs have been around for many years, but it is now that they are becoming more popular. It is a friendly, intelligent, and courageous dog; they have the appearance of a wolf. Samoyed Origin This dog was developed in the 19th century, and in its beginnings, the Siberians used them for herding. When they were already known, they were used to protect, hunt, and pull sleds. The Samoyed has a very thick coat and has a double coat that protects them from the cold. This is a friendly, fluffy, and very intelligent dog. They are intelligent, loyal, friendly dogs and it is the second most popular breed in the world. It will depend on the characteristics passed from each parent. If the mix inherits more German Shepherd characteristics, its physical characteristics and characteristics will resemble the German Shepherd. Whereas if he inherits more traits from the Samoyed side, the puppy will resemble the Samoyed physically. Temperament The German Shepherd Samoyed temperament will inherit the temperament and protective instincts of his father. But they will have the social aspect of the Samoyed. Owners of Samoyed German Shepherd dogs say that this mix needs a lot of affection and attention. Both breeds get bored easily if left alone for too long, and your German shepherd samoyed mix will also inherit this. Personality The Samoyed German Shepherd is a calm, friendly, loyal, and highly intelligent mix. As mentioned above, they can suffer from anxiety and stress if they feel lonely for long periods. Life expectancy The German Shepherd has an average lifespan between 9 and 13 years, and the Samoyed can live between 12 and 13 years. The mix between the two races can live up to 13 years and up to a little longer. Some health risks are very common in each of the parent breeds. German Shepherds often suffer from elbow and hip dysplasia because they are very active. You can have arthritis, thyroid dysfunction, and epilepsy. Samoyeds can have the following health problems: diabetes, hypothyroidism, hip dysplasia, heart problems, and progressive retinal atrophy. Your Samoyed German Shepherd puppy is likely prone to any of these illnesses, which is why constant vet checkup is very important. If you want, you can train them to teach them new tricks and to follow orders, but you must do it early. They are friendly dogs that always want to please their owners and make them feel happy. Follow the steps below: Start training early You should encourage your dog by using positive reinforcement such as cookies, treats, etc. Be patient and take a reasonable time to train your dog. Take walks outside. If you want a relaxed lap dog, this mix will not be for you. They require outdoor activities and daily walks to keep them calm and control their destructive behavior. If you have a German shepherd samoyed mix and do not take frequent walks, you will see that they will start to get bored, and they will chew on shoes, furniture, and everything that comes their way. The Samoyed is a dog that can bark and be annoying. It is possible that your mix can inherit it and become a heavy barker when left alone for a long time. This type of mix should have an outdoor space for him to run around and have fun with some dog toys to stimulate himself. Grooming And Moving Out This mix sheds a lot of furs and should be kept properly to keep it looking good. You should brush it regularly so it can be in good general health and looking great. The Samoyed German Shepherd is not good for people with allergies because of the amount of hair they shed. His coat will be more easily stained with dirt, so he needs a bath at least once a month if you want to keep him clean. You can also use deodorant dog wipes between baths, so their coat always stays clean. They should have chew toys that are great for keeping teeth strong and clean. You should clean his ears frequently and trim his nails every 2 to 3 weeks. Food And Diet As it is a large breed with a large size, you should buy food that is ideal for large breed dogs and high quality. You must ensure that your dog has adequate nutrition to have good development and growth. An ideal amount would be 3 cups of croquettes every day. It is important that the meal is balanced and contains nutrients. Adult dogs should eat twice a day that are in the morning and at night. As it is a unique and rare mix, it cannot be easy to find it. It is a fluffy, friendly, loyal dog with striking coat colors; that is why the Samoyed German Shepherd is an ideal charming dog for you. It is a smart mix that will love to play and give love to all its owners. You must bear in mind that it is a dog that needs a lot of exercise on daily walks so that you can keep it healthy and happy. Here are a few obvious ones that stand out the most. The first character that will be prominently different is the guarding instincts. The Samoyed — German Shepherd mix has extremely strong guarding instincts. These dogs are very agile and lively. They will most probably be aggressive against people they do not know or might sense danger from. This character is very different from the Samoyed since these dogs were not bred for guarding the human but for companionship. Samoyeds are not good guard dogs but the Samoyed-German Shepherd mix has the potential to be very good watchdogs especially if trained properly. Another trait that differs the Samoyed-German Shepherd mix and the Samoyed is the ability to socialize and befriend. Samoyeds are very playful and jolly dogs, and they socialize and make friends very easily. The mix of the Samoyed and German Shepherd may not inherit these traits. The cross-breeds may find it difficult to make friends with other dogs and may be a little lonely on that front. Next characteristic that differs the Samoyed- German Shepherd cross-breed from the Samoyed is their attention span. The Samoyed is a dog that gets easily distracted. The Samoyed- German Shepherd mix, however, will be more focused and, as a result, easier to train. While both the Samoyed and the German Shepherd are intelligent dogs, the Samoyed is known to be a pretty stubborn dog and a little difficult to train. When talking about the physical appearance and traits, however, there will be different results with every breeding that occurs. While some Samoyed — German Shepherd cross-breeds resemble the Samoyed more, some may be totally different from the Samoyed. If the mix takes on more fur color from the Shepherd, expect the dog to look like a fluffy German Shepherd. Special care requirements The first care requirement for these dogs is their daily exercise needs. Since this cross-breed comes from very active parents, they will need a lot of exercises to be healthy. Daily walks and playtimes are necessary to keep them physically and mentally healthy. Taking them outdoor at least once a week is important since these dogs need to play out in the open. Another special care that you need to know is grooming. The Samoyed- German Shepherd mix sheds profusely. You will need a lot of time to brush and groom them regularly to keep the shedding to a minimum. They will also require a bath more frequently to keep their fur and skin healthy. Since the size of these dogs is similar to both parents, they will require just as much nutrition. The Samoyed- German Shepherd cross-breed is known for having joint issues so keep that in mind when you think about nutrition and nutrients. Check out complete nutrition guidance here. Both the Samoyeds and German Shepherds are known to be quite difficult to live with in an apartment. These dogs need space to be able to grow into healthy, beautiful dogs. Unless you have access to a large dog park then the dog will show a lot of signs of restlessness in the apartment. If you do want to get this dog for an apartment, you will need to get ready to spend the time outdoor to make them play and release their energy. These dogs will require at least two hours of active playtime every day. Coat The coat of a German Shepherd Samoyed mix will depend on which parent it takes after. GSDs have dense undercoats with coarse medium-to-long hair that lay close to the body. Samoyeds also have dense undercoats but their outer coats stand straight out from the body, giving them a fluffier appearance. This could be biscuit, cream, white, or a combination of white and biscuit. Grooming Because of the lush hair and dense undercoats that they will inherit from both parents, you can expect the German Shepherd-Samoyed mix to shed substantially. They will shed throughout the year and more profusely for weeks during the spring and fall. To manage shedding, they will need a minimum of once-a-week brushing, but times a week would be ideal. Other grooming needs would be the same as any other large dog. They need to bathe once every 6 to 8 weeks and have their nails trimmed regularly unless they are worn down by their regular activities. They also need frequent tooth brushing and ear cleaning. Strength Keep in mind that Samoyeds initially worked as sled dogs hauling objects and people across brutal weather. On the other hand, German Shepherds are muscular with incredible bite strength. Given that both parents are strong working dogs, you can expect GSD-Samoyeds to have considerable strength. Speed As herders and protectors of livestock, both German Shepherds and Samoyeds were bred not only with awesome agility but also incredible speeds. Given the speed at which both parents can run, GSD-Samoyed crosses are expected to reach running speeds of approximately 30 miles per hour. Exercise Requirement German Shepherds are more energetic than Samoyeds, but not much more so. Combining these two breeds would undoubtedly result in high-energy dogs that need as much mental stimulation as physical activity. They thrive best with two minute walks per day or at least 30 minutes of strenuous exercise plus additional off-leash playtime. Mental stimulation keeps them from getting bored and diverting their energy and intelligence to less desirable activities. To keep them fulfilled and well behaved, you can give them jobs to do at home. You can also give them puzzle toys to play with or engage them in regular training sessions. Trainability According to a dog intelligence study led by a canine psychologist named Stanley Coren, German Shepherds are among the top tier of working dogs when it comes to intellect. It takes GSDs no more than five repetitions to pick up a new command. Although Samoyeds rank at the third tier, they are still considered to have above-average intelligence. It will take them anywhere from 15 to 20 repetitions to learn a new command. Although the two breeds vary in the rankings, GSD-Samoyed crosses are expected to have at least above-average intelligence. Combined with the work drive and eagerness to please of both breeds, this mix will be a highly trainable dog. Temperament Samoyed-German Shepherd mixes are affectionate with as well as protective of their family. Additionally, they are more likely to be friendly to strangers than their GSD parent. With proper socialization and careful introduction, they could also be good with young children and other pets. Samoyed-GSD crosses are not only energetic but also playful. Although they are known to be adaptable, they will thrive best when they have access to large spaces where they can play, explore, and burn off their excess energy. It is also important to note that these are vocal dogs that might develop a habit of barking excessively. Health German Shepherds and Samoyeds are generally healthy dogs. However, the overall health of their offspring will largely depend on the genetics of both parents. Before being allowed to mate, it is recommended for GSDs to undergo hip and elbow evaluations to rule out the possibility of producing puppies at risk of hip and elbow dysplasia. Samoyeds from responsible breeders are also tested for hip dysplasia. Additionally, it is advised for these dogs to undergo extensive retinal and cardiovascular evaluations. As long as both parents are from responsible breeders, a Samoyed-German Shepherd mix should live long and healthy lives. Lifespan German Shepherd-Samoyed mixes can live anywhere from 7 to 14 years old. Many factors will contribute to their lifespan. Apart from the genes they inherit from their parents, it helps to give them high-quality dog food and ample opportunities to exercise. Additionally, it helps to stay on top of parasite prevention measures and to take them in for regular vet checkups. Because the Samoyed-German Shepherd mix is a cross, it cannot be registered into the AKC nor compete in conformation events. Once in a while, however, you will come across a litter of Samoyed-GSDs that are the outcome of accidental mating or intentional breeding by the occasional enthusiasts of this cross. With good pedigrees and responsible breeding practices, GSD-Samoyeds are expected to be even-tempered and healthy. These pups are expected to be energetic, driven, and headstrong. Before buying or adopting one, make sure you have not only space for them to occupy but also the time, patience, and determination to train and exercise them and keep them well-behaved. While you cannot stop a dog from shedding, you can somewhat mitigate the quantity of fur it blows around your house by lowering the temperature or making sure the climate you live in with your pet is not as hot as its fur would allow. Expect to be brushing your pet daily, not just weekly. Not considering the times when the coat has been stained by urine or caked in mud and dirt, your pet will need a bath every other month to keep its cleanliness and shine did you know it can be burnt by the sun? For dental hygiene, provide rawhide bones and certain chewing toys which are sold to keep the teeth clean, and brush their teeth with toothpaste using a gentle toothbrush to remove discoloration and foul breath. Every two-three weeks trim their nails, as well as the hair from their foot pads. Just like the appearance of this mixed breed, he will be as unique in personality as he is in looks. As mentioned in this article, the mix may inherit some protective elements from its German shepherd half. However, most German shepherd samoyeds have friendly, enthusiastic temperaments, which are enforced from their samoyed half. You can expect all the playfulness and activeness of the german shepherd along with the familiar samoyed tongue-wagging smile and furry hug upon being welcomed at home, while being equally recipient of strangers who visit the house. Many owners of the mix report that the german shepherd samoyed mix requires a lot of affection, meaning you provide it with the same dignity and respect to its german shepherd half as well as attention and loving play to its samoyed half. Exercise Needs Make no mistake, this is a very active breed, having descended from two highly active parent breeds. Owners who neglect exercising their pet will quickly bear witness to the consequences in just a day, as a pent-up samoyed shepherd mix will chew up shoes, furniture and any object they can fit their jaw in, much to the chagrin of their owners. Ultimately, you want your pet to thoroughly enjoy itself, if not tire itself off. Truly, the old adage a good dog is a tired one remains true here, as it will decrease the chances of it carrying inappropriate behavior indoors for the rest of the day. Health Risks There are no additional health risks that the german shepherd samoyed mix has in comparison to other breeds, as it is susceptible to the same health risks as any other dog. However, all mixed breeds have a higher disease tolerance and resistance due to genetic diversity. When in doubt, never hesitate to take your pet to the vet. Feeding The diet of a german shepherd samoyed mix should not differ from that of a regular dog of its size. This means that it should be eating high-quality protein foods either raw or in instant doggy packages, or with sweet potato and other starches mixed in to provide micronutrients. Occasionally you can reward it with treats or raw, meaty bones to chew on which kill two birds with one stone, as they clean their teeth as well as give them something to chew on. Avoid seafood, as your pet should avoid fish or shrimp for their fattiness salmon being the exception. Meat can be cooked by either baking or boiling with no seasoning whatsoever. The quantity of food will be roughly around pounds of food per month for a fully grown adult. Adults will eat naturally twice a day, once in the morning and once in the evening. Since the German Shepherd is known for its protectiveness, this trait can easily be seen in the german shepherd samoyed mix. German Shepherd Samoyeds are a rather unique mix and can be quite hard to find. Thus, they can cost anywhere from the lowest a german shepherd puppy to the most expensive of samoyed purebreds. Always attempt to adopt from shelters, rather than from pet stores as they often carry dogs from puppy mills which treat their dogs unethically and remove them from their mothers at a young age. Are you looking for a predominantly-white furred dog with the dignity and guard-like personality of a german shepard but with the happy, carefree attitude and friendliness of a samoyed? Before you say yes to this mix, consider the following: Are you an outdoors, physically active person? Do you live in a colder climate, and if not- do you not mind constant shedding and grooming on a daily basis? Do you have a strong will in case your pet challenges your authority? Do you spend enough time at home to prevent your dog from feeling bored or lonely? If you answered yes to all these questions, then this mix may be the perfect pet for you. One of the easiest ways to give your pet the attention it needs is to enjoy a walk or outside activity together. Playing with your dog can maximize bonding as well as making sure it gets energy out of its system so that it can be relaxed and content indoors afterwards. Depending on the individual dog, as well as the temperament of its parents, your pooch may attempt to dominate you at times, trying to assert its authority instead. Compatibility with Kids Given proper socialization of both parents, the mixed offspring should have no problem with kids, as german shepherds are known to be good with kids due to their gentle patience and samoyeds are already quite friendly. Compatibility with Other Animals Both german shepherds and samoyeds are reported to be good with other dogs and pets in the family, provided that they have grown up with them and have been properly socialized. Socializing is the process of introducing a pup to the rules of doggy etiquette, where they learn what is appropriate doggy behavior and what is out of bounds. From youth they learn the proper ways to express play and frustration, and if denied this opportunity they can become estranged from the pack. If your german shepherd samoyed mix is barking and displaying more hostile behavior to not just your neighborhood dogs but your family pets, this can be one of the possible reasons for it doing so. I hope you found it helpful as you raise your pet. For dogs, flea and tick infestation is deadly and may cause severe diseases if not treated regularly. If anyone in your family has allergies, you should consider getting a hypoallergenic breed. Brushing your dog regularly can make a big difference not only in their appearance, but also in their overall health. Although you cannot completely stop your pooch from shedding, you will reduce the amount of fur he blows around the house by brushing them every day, and not just once a week. Not considering the periods when their coat will be stained by urine or dirt, he will also require a bath at least once a month to maintain their cleanliness. Also, use deodorizing wipes for dogs between baths to keep their coat in good condition at all times. To prevent dental issues, brush their teeth regularly and provide them with chew toys that are designed to keep their teeth clean and strong. Good nutrition will help ensure their optimal growth and development. An ideal amount of food for your Samoyed German Shepherd Mix would be around three cups of premier quality kibble every day. Buy a Litter Box With High Sides To avoid accidental spills, you should consider buying a litter box made of sturdy material with high sides. These prevent spills with male dogs since they can block any splashing. A flat litter box tray has drawbacks but is significantly better for large dogs. Generally, you will have an easier time litter box training a smaller dog, as a large dog will have difficulty containing their mess in a cat litter box that is entirely too small for their body. If you are set on litter box training a large dog, you will need to get creative with what you use as the litter box itself — using a large metal tray or a shallow plastic storage bin may be your best bet! A small dog can use a standard large litter box and keep the mess in the potty area. High sided litter box, intened for dog use 4. Post navigation. We all know cats are typically the fur family members to use a litter box. But what about dogs? Are there any good arguments for litter box training your canine friend? A dog litter box? Or an artificial grass pad? So I rarely advise pet parents to skip this opportunity. That said, there are a few instances when using a dog litter box is preferable. Is it right for your dog? This is especially true if you have a small dog, or tiny tinkler as I call them, since they often have more difficulty holding their urine than bigger dogs. This leads to more accidents in the house and bigger frustrations, which puts a damper on your relationship. I wrote an entirely different article that goes into more detail about why your dog is peeing in the house. But if you live in an area that sees several feet of snow or is primarily paved and gets very hot, an indoor dog litter box might actually be safer for your pet. You or Your Dog Have Mobility Issues If you or your dog have mobility issues, dog litter box training might be a good idea. Some companies, like doggybathroom. All you need to do is change out the pads and keep the inside clean. This can be a good option for medium-sized dogs that raise their leg to pee. The downside is the cost. The pee pads are disposable and will need to be replaced frequently. If you want to use dog litter, the sides of the litter box should be low enough for your dog to easily step over but high enough to contain the litter. Now what about artificial grass pads? The initial investment for a grass pad like this one is minimal. Can Dogs Use Cat Litter? Yes, technically, dogs can use cat litter. However, cat litter can be harmful if ingested, which is a risk since our canine friends are known to eat strange things from time to time. Dog litter typically consists of larger, more absorbent pellets, which are safer if ingested. Some are also made with recycled material, like wood or paper. Pin me! Whether you choose a litter box or a grass pad, will your dog really use it? This is the million doggie bone question. Can pet parents actually get their pups to use a dog litter box? In many cases, the answer is yes, you can. Trying to contain a Bull Mastiff in a box while they do their business would be quite a feat! And large dogs tend to raise their leg to pee, so the sides of the dog litter box would have to be very high to avoid soaking surrounding objects. Step 1: Find the Right Spot When house training dogs, we usually bring them outside. Do this by getting a paper towel or pee pad containing a little of their urine and placing it where you want them to go. Step 3: Praise Them for Using the Right Spot Again, just as you would do if training a dog to go outside, be sure to give them lots of praise and some training treats when they do their business in the right spot. But with time, your dog will understand how to use their new pee spot. And of course, you want your home to be sanitary.

However, it is the red Poodle that is so rare, so stunning and so special. Bringing this color into the Poodle genes and being able to produce such a shocking and beautiful dog was not easy. Let's take a look at how this was done and what you should know about his particular dog. Red poodles are rare and are of a faded gene. When they are produced, the pups usually come from dogs with apricot lines, which can be confusing to many since of course red is a much darker and deeper color. This gene may work to darken an apricot or sometimes a brown coat. One thing that is clear is that the red gene has absolutely no affect on blacks. The apricot gene is recessive to all Poodles except for the white. A true red will have black points. Liver points are acceptable but not preferred in the U. It took quite a while to achieve the amazing red Poodles that we see today. It was Ilse Konig of the Shangri-La Kennel who first came up with the idea of developing a red color standard. Experimental breeding was done by mating a small miniature apricot female Poodle to a large standard sized red at Palamares. The very first litter produced four red Poodle puppies. It is said that the color was simply amazing. Due to the rare pairing of two different sized Poodles, this placed the dogs into a category that is between the Miniature and the Standard, called the Klein or Moyan, which is popular and recognized in Europe. The biggest puppy from each litter was then bred…And this is what helped to slowly increase the size of the dog. After quite a few years of breeding and keeping red Poodle puppies, red Standards were then able to be bred relatively easily. Reds can go through many color changes as the dog grows. They occasionally are born a very bright red and then lighten over time. Some will stay lighter, however in some cases the Poodle will then darken up again as he or she ages. When a red does lighten, the color will usually become a sort of cinnamon color. In most cases, they are exceptionally dark and then lighten between 1 year old and 18 months old. Since a color change can occur during puppyhood.Or in the later adult stages, this means that the owner of an Apricot or tan my have a huge surprise if their Poodle's coat develops into this amazing, bright and rare color. So, do be aware that a red Poodle can fade, as fading is common with this breed. The exceptional color that one may see in a young puppy will often change with time; although this is not to say that the adult coat will not be gorgeous in its own right. When one does know that they have a red, here are the most popular names that are given: Amber. Contact Us Red Poodles With all the colors available in Poodles it could be hard to choose your puppy. However, it is the red Poodle that is so very rare, so stunning and so special! It does appear that it is a completely separate gene than the other poodle colors. Red Poodles are the newest color developed, it only became an official color in .A red poodle will have black points, nose, gums, under paws and very dark eyes. Liver points are acceptable, but not preferred in red poodles. Red poodles are a stunningly beautiful color, one that is very close to the color of humans with natural red hair. Poodles come in the light red new copper color to the darkest of any human with dark auburn hair. Ilse Konig was the first person who developed the red color of poodles. It was first developed on the Standard Poodle, then crossed with an Apricot female miniature Poodle. After many years of selective breeding, we now have Red Poodles in all the poodle sizes. While developing the red color, it was imperative to breed for all the qualities of a well-bred poodle, which includes temperament, health, conformation, and beauty. Missing any one of these characteristics the red poodles would not be complete! Typically, red poodle puppies are born quite red, then, when they are about 6 weeks old, their coats will turn less red. Then at about 10 weeks, you can see a definite dark red line next to the skin where the new coat color is coming in. It is thrilling to see this in a red poodle puppy. Their mature red color changes cannot be predicted by the color of the puppy. Some dark apricot poodles will stay a brighter color than the red poodles. The Poodle breed is a breed that does change color, as do some other breeds. Do be aware that red poodles can fade, it is common for these breeds to lighten up as they age. Each dog is an individual and will change. This is not to say that the mature red coat will not be gorgeous in its own right. Red Poodles, and poodles in general, tend to lead lively energetic lives. Red poodles are extremely loyal companions, making them ideal pets. They love to learn tricks and will perform for audiences of enthusiastic onlookers and their red color stands out above the rest! Most designer dogs have one thing in common: they are crossed with a Poodle. There is a very good reason for that, the Poodle cross brings up the intelligence and ability to train. Crosses also get some of the benefits of the hypoallergenic qualities of the Poodle, and less shedding. If you live afar, we can safely ship your red poodle puppy to the closest major jet port. Photos and video also doesn't do the colour justice as the colour varies in intensity depending on the lighting. The one thing that was not mistakable was that this was a colour I had never before seen. The best part was that their temperaments were calm, very loving with eyes that would melt any cold heart. I also met the parents and the grandparents and saw photos going back 5 generations. I was hooked on the colour and knew my research had proved correct. I found my breeders. We often get asked "what does a red look like in person" Our reply is "same as a dark red headed human" Their hair is also as fine. A typical red will love lying in our laps and winding around our legs like cats for affection or attention. They are a very "soft" natured dog and respond well to "positive" training. If you are harsh with them or they sense they are disappointing you they will mentally just shut down and pout. They also want to be everywhere with you including the bathroom. You will always hear the pitter patter of a red standards feet as they will be your shadow. They love working for praise and or a laugh. Once they know a trick, they will produce it with amazing precision with eager eyes waiting, begging for your praise and you better be lavish with it if you want to see them happy. Rose pups I would describe our reds as being the most empathetic of all the colours. It is as if they can read you and decide if you are happy in which case they may be silly to get a laugh or they know that you are sad and will be calm and quiet and just rest their head on your lap waiting for you to invite them up on the couch to watch a movie with you. I do find that the reds are more "dedicated" to their owners. Valor and Ember Do not leave your red standard poodle at the window while you go to get a Tim Horton's coffee or you will be met with the back of your red standard poodle and hear sighs of "woe" until you are forgiven. Thankfully reds like all poodles, forgive quickly. I will warn anyone that is thinking about getting a red Standard and plans on walking them, that you will not get past a block without someone stopping you to see your puppy. Everyone will want to know what breed it is and you will hear people exclaim "I didn't know poodles came that colour or that size". We have almost caused accidents by people slamming on their brakes to stop to look at us. One thing is for sure is that if you go walking with your red you will make many friends Paris waiting for her owner to finish in the bathroom, after she tried unsuccessfully to get in This color Red is NOT for everyone. If you are not used to having a dog constantly at your feet or on your lap, constantly touching you, or wanting to be in the same room as you then you might find a red to be too "needy". If you have plans on doing Pet Therapy with a Red they are perfect for this as they are so gentle and caring, but please -limit- the time you offer your Red to the service, as they can become easily drained from them absorbing others emotional and sometimes physical pain. They do love obedience and showing, of course as how better for them to show everyone how smart and pretty they are! During that time, I broke both my feet and also required both of my hips to be replaced. Red poodles are some of the most spectacularly beautiful canines you will ever see. The path to producing such a shocking and stunning dog was not easy. In this article, we are going to cover everything there is to know about red poodles. What is a Red Poodle? A true red poodle has black points. Liver points are accepted by not preferred, especially in the United States. Many people do not know that red poodles came from the apricot poodle bloodline. This is usually hard to believe because red poodles have a much darker and richer color than the more faded look of an apricot. Red poodles are a new color in the breed. They only officially became recognized by the AKC in .In Canada some breeders joined to form the Apricot Red Poodle Club in order to up hold the high standards set for breeding red poodles. However, it does appear that red poodles have a separate gene that makes them fundamentally different from apricot poodles. One thing that breeders have come to understand is that the gene involved in darkening the coat of an apricot poodle does not have an effect on black poodles. In fact, the apricot gene is a recessive gene to all poodle colors except for white. Where do Red Poodles Come From? Red poodles have an interesting history. Ilse Konig was the first person to develop a red color. The color was first developed by taking a large male standard poodle and breeding it with an apricot female miniature poodle. Through the years the red poodle was developed more and more through careful, selective breeding Since breeding poodles of different sizes is quite rare the litters from these pairings were placed into a new category called the Klein or Moyan. These categories are or popular in Europe than anywhere else. Essentially this created a size in between the standard and miniature. Over time, the breeding of the largest dogs from each litter allowed for the standard-sized reds that we see today. As a result, standard-sized reds are now much easier to breed. Now, as a result, we have red poodles in every poodle size. Some of the earliest of the reds were known to be a bit more feisty and aggressive than those reds we have today. This is in part due to the breeding of standard with a miniature and also due to some breeders only focusing on breeding for color only. There was also a certain amount of inbreeding that occurred among some breeders. These temperament challenges are largely a thing of the past and reputable breeders produce calm loving reds. As you can see, one of the biggest challenges in developing the red color was to also take into consideration other qualities that make a well-bred poodle. These qualities include health, temperament, beauty, and conformation. Do Red Poodles Change in Color? Usually, when red puppies are born, they have a deep, rich red color. Typically, when they are about 6 weeks old their coat will begin to fade a little bit. About 4 Weeks later a sharp red line will be visible next to the skin if you part their hair. This is where the new coat will come in. It can be quite exciting for new red puppy owners to see. One of the interesting things about red poodles is that their coats can, and will, go through many changes over the course of their life. It is not uncommon or their coats to go from lighter to darker, to lighter and back to a darker shade. Every red poodle has its own unique color of red. There is really no way to know how their coat will change over time. Some reds retain a dark rich color while others may brighten or lighten over time. If the pedigree of a red poodle contains lots of diluted color breeding Especially blue, silver or cafe and also cream and apricot then there is a high chance that they will fade upon maturity. Like many other breeds of dogs, red poodles can change color. When looking for a breeder take a close look at the poodles they have bred in the past. This will give you a better idea of what to expect. But remember each red poodle is different. Standard Red Poodles Standard Poodles are by far the most common, most well-known, arguably the most sought-after side poodle. One thing that sets the red pool apart from other colors is simply just how rare of a sight it is. Red standard poodles are among the most majestic, regal, and stunning of the breed. They must be 15 inches in height or higher at the withers to be considered a standard. They can weight anywhere between 45 to 75 pounds. There is actually a slight difference in their appearance. They can take on a slightly more square appearance. Miniature red poodles are from 10 to 15 in height with an average weight of about 20 pounds. This size poodle takes on more of a square appearance in terms of proportion. These dogs super sporty and love outdoor activities. They are fast, agile, and eager to please. Did we mention fun-loving and amusing? Owners should have very little trouble training these dogs as they are extremely intelligent. For many families, the miniature red poodle is just the right size. Not too big, not too small, with just the right amount of cuteness! Toy Red Poodles Red toy poodles are like mini balls of red fur. Like other colored toy poodles, they grow up to 10 inches in height and usually weight between pounds. Between the miniature and standard sized poodles, toy poodles are the smallest of the three. They are among some of the cutest and most adorable toy dogs you can find. Even though they are small in size they have big personalities and a ton of energy. They are also available in beautiful, deep, rich reds and lighter cinnamon shades as well. One thing to consider when getting a red toy poodle is the extra bit of care that comes with taking care of a dog this size. Because of its small size, extra care must be given to keep an eye on any size related healh issues. But wow when you do find one I must say they are some of the cutest, most adorable, tiny red poodles you have ever seen. Now to be clear, red teacup poodles are technically toy poodles but much smaller in size. They can also sometimes be prone to health issues and can require extra care and attention. You must take great care in finding a reputable breeder to ensure that your pup will be healthy and resilient. Does the weather affect coat color? But it really just depends on your poodle. Generally, the sun has a more profound impact on light and white-colored poodles. Typically, you will find that their coat maybe becomes a little brighter or lighter than normal. If it does happen to bother you, not to worry. You can simply let it grow out a little bit and then trim off lighter bits. For those red poodles that have a deep, rich red colored coach they will be largely unaffected by sunlight. Does age affect coat color? There are situations where a poodle can also become darker over time as well but it is less common. Red poodles can be fickle in that way. It is common for red poodles In their senior years to fade in color and become lighter and lighter. What to look for when choosing a Red Poodle? When choosing a red poodle there are several things that you must pay very close attention to. If you find red, apricot and even a couple black poodles in the family tree then you are on the right track. If you have the opportunity to observe the parents of the litter they may also give you some signs as to what kind temperament your puppy might have. Does the breeder keep the area clean and neat? Is there a strong odor of urine or feces present? Are there other pets on the property? What kind of condition are they? Do they appear to be well cared for, clean and or groomed? A truly dedicated breeder will have a system in place for breeding dogs and will often be greatly involved in showing dogs. They will have good records and documents on previous litters, health certificates, and vaccinations, etc. If you do your homework, you would have found a skilled experienced breeder and not a backyard quick money operation. What are good names for red poodles? I have heard just about every red poodle name there is. Naming your new puppy can be quite the challenge and at times can be a little overwhelming with so many options. Below you can find a list of my favorites. Great Poodle Names. The red patches are usually located on their ears, around their eyes and on their backs. The patches can be anywhere from a light red to a deep, dark red. Phantom Poodles have a coat with a solid background and a secondary color in patches in very specific locations. These locations include the chin, throat, chest, legs, beneath their tail, above their eyes or on the sides of their muzzle. In this case the solid background is black and the secondary color is a tannish red. Red Poodle With White Markings Red Poodle with White Markings via carolinahillhomestead Some Red Poodles are not fully red in color but rather feature white patches on their chest, paws, chin and top of their muzzle. That being said, Red Poodles with white chests are not as common as solid Red Poodles. You are more likely to find red and white coats in Poodle mix breeds like Maltipoos and Cavapoos. Apricot Poodles often have peachy undertones in their coat and sometimes they are so light that they are nearly cream in color. Real Brown Poodles feature a much richer brown coat than the rusty-red of a Red Poodle. That is why Brown Poodles are often called Chocolate Poodles because their coat resembles the color of milk or dark chocolate.

There are two training methods that are very useful to teach your furry friend obedience: luring and capturing. That is why punishing or rewarding a dog for something he did in the past does not work. To help with timing, dog trainers use a marker word or a clicker. A marker word is used to mark the moment the animal did something correct and it is followed by a treat. The use of the word helps you have better timing, which in turn helps your bulldog understand what you are rewarding for faster. To teach your pooch the meaning of a marker word, all you need to do is say it and follow with the delivery of a treat. Good boy! Practice repetitions, 2 to 3 times a day and you will notice that your pooch will start responding when he hears that magic word! Bulldog training STEP 2: Teaching your bulldog its name One of the most important things to teach your bulldog is its name. This is always neglected, you name your bulldog, then assume he will understand that is they way you call him. Unfortunately, this is not true and recognizing its name is one of the most important things a dog should know. If your puppy doesn't look at you when you call him, how is he going to do what you ask? Teaching a dog its name is super easy, here are the steps: Say your bulldog's name As soon as he looks at you, say your marker word or click! Immediately afterwards, give him a treat! Repeat many times and in different places and situations. Bulldog training STEP 3: Teaching your bulldog basic obedience commands Now comes the fun part, training your bulldog to respond to basic commands. Home » Puppy Training for the first 8 weeks home Puppy Training for the first 8 weeks home Training for puppy for your first 8 weeks home Olde English bulldogs are affectionate, friendly, courageous and intelligent. However, there is one trait that bulldogs also tend to exhibit — bullheadedness. They can be incredibly stubborn, which makes training them somewhat difficult. Purchase a crate. Some people think a crate represents incarceration, but a responsible dog owner knows that a comfy crate is a haven for his or her bulldog. If there is a lot of activity in your home, your bulldog will appreciate having a place to get away from it all. Because dogs of all breeds dislike soiling the areas they sleep in, a crate can be an invaluable tool when it comes to house-training. Buy a crate the just fits the puppy as he grows. If the crate is too big the puppy will soil an area at the opposite end of the crate from his sleeping spot. Crate Olde English bulldog puppies when you must leave them on their own. No dog should be left in a crate indefinitely. Remember this is a tool, not a prison. Bulldogs are smart and, again, stubborn. Schedule meal times to prevent accidents. English bulldogs love food and will eat until they get sick if not carefully watched. Fill a bowl with high-quality puppy food using the feeding chart on the puppy food bag to measure the correct amount by weight I recommend Canida and allow the puppies to eat for 10 minutes twice daily. If there is any food left in the bowl, save it for the next feeding. Take your English bulldog puppies outside for plenty of potty breaks. English bulldogs have small bladders and should go out every hour initially, working up to every few hours. Generally speaking, a pup should be able to hold it for one hour longer than its age in months. Take your English bulldog baby outside after naps and meals, as well, to prevent accidents in the house. Praise each puppy heartily after it has gone potty and offer a small treat as a reward. Bathe puppies at least biweekly using a mild antibacterial antifungal shampoo to cut down on dirt and grime in their skin folds, and dry thoroughly, including spaces in between wrinkles. Wrinkle cleaning is recommended twice a week for Olde English Bulldog puppies. Teach your puppies to walk calmly on a leash. English bulldog puppies can be stubborn, but a leash will help guide the puppies and keep them under control. Let the puppies drag the leashes around to get used to the feeling of something behind them. Once they stop paying attention to the leash, pick it up and follow the puppy. Walk backwards a few steps, tempting the puppy with the treat. Train each puppy in basic obedience commands once it is acclimated to the leash. When you interact with your puppy, you want to: Use a firm — but not angry — tone of voice. Reward with praise, toys or treats. Be consistent. Inconsistent training is poor training. Expect accidents and mistakes at first. Your puppy is like a toddler just learning how to walk. Most vet clinics and pet supply stores offer puppy training classes for the whole family. I strongly encourage all new puppy owners to attend. Its great socialization and gets the whole family on board with the training. About Us As the premier breeder of Olde English Bulldogges in the Southeast, we love providing families and individuals of all ages with healthy, happy puppies from this amazing breed. By: David Codr Published Date: March 2, For this Omaha dog training session we went over the bucket game to help 2 year-old Olde English Bulldog Ope develop some self control and help with his problem of jumping up on guests. As soon as he did, one of his guardian started to call him away from me. A few minutes later when we sat down and Ope started to get into my bag and jump up on me again. The guardian repeated her previous action; calling up over away for me and this time petting him. The problem with this is that any attention is validating to a dog. You have a window of about two seconds to correct or reward a dog and whatever happened right before you give them attention or pet them is what the dog thinks the petting is for. This is one of the most common mistakes I see people make with thier dogs. I pointed this out as well as sharing a number of other dog behavior tips throughout this session. Dogs need physical or mental stimulation every couple of hours, otherwise they get bored which usually leads them towards unwanted behaviors like chewing, barking or jumping up. If you want a dog to stop jumping up on people, you have to keep them mentally and physically stimulated, usually doing somehting for them every hours. I recommended that his guardian start feeding him out of a snuffle mat and other food dispensing toys , do some cent games, get him some ingestible chew items, use kongs filled with peanut butter and a lick mat when guests are home as well as some creative forms of exercise. One of the creative forms of exercise is something we stumbled across towards the end of the session. Ope gets to sleep with his guardians in their bed, but recently has started to try to take positions in the bed that make sleeping a challenge for the humans. I showed the humans a simple way to condition Ope to want to sit and lay down in the portion of the bed that they want him to sleep in. This involves calling him up onto the bed, using a marker word to communicate when he got to the desired position and then giving him a treat. Because the bed is on a frame and Ope has shorter legs, this exercise of calling him up and down off of the bed quickly wiped him out. I recommended that the guardians practice this bed exercise a few times a day, especially anytime that he starts to indicate that he has too much energy like jumping up on guests, zooming around the room, etc. The guardians can also practice this exercise in advance of zoom calls or anything else that they need to do an undisturbed. Proactively getting your puppy or adult dog exercise or mental stimulation is a very simple and effective dog behavior trick many dog behaviorists use. I also showed the guardians how they could use delayed gratification to help the dog practice a little self-restraint and self-control. Anytime you have a dog that likes to jump up on people or engage in unwanted behaviors, finding ways for them to practice restraining themselves is a great way to help a dog develop self-control. You can learn how to use the bucket game to help your dog settle down and develop some self-control by watching the free positive dog training video below. Within 20 seconds he was zeroed in on the bowl and his breathing and movements slowed way down. The best part of this trick to calm a dog down is that anyone can do it, even if you arent a professional Olde English dog trainer. If the guardians can get into a habit of making Ope wait, then moving the bowl horizontally five times without getting up out of a sit before lowering it, he will quickly adopt a new behavior of sitting quietly waiting for his food. I would recommend that the guardians practice this exercise as well as use a snuffle mat to feed him. I would do this exercise first with half his kibble, and then put half of his food into a snuffle mat after the bucket game. I shared a number of other dog behavior tips in this in-home Omaha dog training session. To make sure that it was easy for oops guardians to remember them all, we recorded a roadmap to success video that you can check out below. Share this:. Contact Us How to house train a English bulldog puppy the right way The easiest way to go about house training your new bulldog puppy is by utilizing a crate. Dogs are and always have been den and pack animals, they naturally and instinctively prefer the shelter of a den. Therefore most dogs will not urinate or defecate in their crate, which is why it is such an invaluable tool for housebreaking. The first thing to understand, though, is the need for repetition and consistency. Begin by purchasing the appropriate size crate. Think den not condo! It should be small with just enough room for your bulldog to stand up, turn around and lie down comfortably. It is not an exercise pen. The use of too large a crate will encourage your bulldog puppy to use a small portion of it for a bed and the rest of it as a place to potty. We use the Midwest Life Stages crates. Leave the crate door open and allow your bulldog puppy to come and go as he pleases. Keep his favorite treats handy that you only use for the crate. It gives the puppy a nice reason to go in and creates a positive experience. At mealtimes, feed your bulldog in the crate with the door closed. At night, just before bedtime take your bulldog puppy out to potty. Put your puppy in his crate and shut the door. For the first 3 nights set your alarm for 3 hours. Set him down and wait. When he goes potty, praise him and put him back in his crate. Set your alarm for 3 more hours and repeat. After three days, if it has been successful and there have been no accidents, move to 4-hour intervals. After three more nights, you have hopefully taught your puppy that you will be there to take him outside when he has to go. If there have been no accidents you can then start going to bed and waiting until your puppy wakes you up to potty. It is important to respond and take him out immediately if he wakes during the night. In the morning, as soon as you wake up, immediately take your puppy out. By house time, I mean freedom to move about but always in the same room as you so that you can keep a constant eye on him. We use baby gates to block off access to other rooms. During the day repeat the above process and continue to take the puppy out every hour. If he does not do his business put him back in his crate and try again in 15 minutes. NEVER let a bulldog puppy in training out of your site. Use the crate as you would a playpen for a human child. Even if you leave the room for a minute, either take the puppy with you or put him in the crate. If you turn your back for 60 seconds and your puppy has an accident, then you messed up and made a mistake and have missed the opportunity to make a correction and teach the puppy. Do not rub his nose in it and do not use any physical correction! When he goes outside give him lots of praise. Use an odor neutralizer. When an accident occurs it is important to completely remove the odor, otherwise your puppy will gravitate back to the area to relieve himself again. You can buy the neutralizers from most any pet store. Do not use household cleaners, most contain ammonia which will attract him back to the same spot. A Few Tips to Help You Succeed Puppies will need to go potty first thing in the morning, after every meal, as soon as they wake up from naps and just before bedtime. A few hours before bedtime take up his water, this will help buy you a litter more time between potty breaks at night. If you see him smelling a particular spot or circling around, pick him up and take him outside. Keep your puppy on a regular feeding schedule and take away his food between meals. Puppies may not initially like the crate. Some will cry, whine, bark and drive you crazy the first couple of days. Doing so will teach your puppy that if he barks or whines long enough he will get rewarded and this will only encourage the behavior. Training an English bulldog puppy takes time, consistency and patience. Dogs function best with structure, routine, and clear expectations. Share this post.

Adorable appearance: Spitzpoos, with their teddy bear-like appearance, quickly melt hearts just by sitting there. They have attractive and friendly expressions on their faces, making them absolutely charming to dog lovers worldwide. Each pup in a litter may not have uniformity on how big they can get. You can never predict their exact size, and you have to wait until they are full-grown adults. Limited sources: Unfortunately for these pups, they are hard to find. There are no breeders specializing in Spitzpoos, and you may find it challenging to acquire them even in rescue shelters. Barking: Spitzpoos are barkers, especially with strangers or unfamiliar faces. Although this may be good to alert you whenever there are intruders, if you like a quiet home and are fond of having guests in your house, you may need to dedicate time and effort to socialize your dog. You can expect your Japanese Spitz Poodle hybrid to weigh eight to 17 pounds, with an average weight of about ten pounds. This is a cute little dog with large, round eyes, a fluffy coat, and even bodily proportions. The ears of this mix could be erect or floppy. Some Japanese Spitz Poodle hybrids have halfway erect ears with tips that fold over at the top. When raised in a positive and confidence-reinforcing environment, this dog should grow to be lively and friendly toward strangers and other animals. However, this intelligent dog is also prone to reacting poorly to traumatic situations. Since this dog learns so quickly, it can retain negative behaviors by accident. Keep this in mind when raising your Japanese Spitz Poodle puppy. This hybrid could have either a single or double-layered coat. Most Japanese Spitz poodle mixes are white or cream-colored. However, this mix can occasionally have a coat that is beige, tan, light brown, or other light colors. It will depend on the genetics of the breeding parents. Japanese Spitz Poodle Mix Grooming Needs Although these dogs are cute and cuddly, their soft coats can be difficult to maintain. In many cases, this coat will also be pretty long. If it has a slight curl to it, grooming gets even harder. It is wise to brush this dog regularly to prevent clumps or mats from forming. When grooming thick, curly coats, a good offense is the best defense. Regular grooming appointments to remove the undercoat if your dog has one are highly recommended. You may also want to use a conditioning treatment before combing or brushing this hybrid. It may also be smart to get your dog used brushes, baths, blow dryers, and clippers from an early age. This dog can be averse to having its hair brushed or pulled. Try to make grooming a positive experience from the start and get your puppy used to all of the necessary grooming accessories before they are fully grown. That way, things go much smoother as your dog ages. As such, you can expect a Japanese Spitz Poodle mix to live an average of 10 to 15 years! According to Dr. Jan Bellows of the American Veterinary Dental College, this will help them have a longer, happier life. Hybrids are often healthier than purebred dogs because they have more genetic diversity. Not only is the Japanese Spitz Poodle mix healthier than a purebred dog, but it combines two of the healthiest purebreds around. Indeed, Poodles and Japanese Spitz dogs are some of the healthiest little canines even though they are purebred. That is not to say that a purebred dog can not be healthy. However, many purebred dogs have been poorly genetically diversified through the years, leading to health issues. In any case, this hybrid is usually healthy and is likely to have a long life! This small dog may develop dental problems if its teeth are not cleaned properly after meals. Dental chews like Minties or Greenies can easily be given to your Spitz Poodle mix after a meal. Japanese Spitz Poodle Mix Exercise Requirements The exercise requirements of this dog are not likely to be overly demanding. In fact, you may be able to exercise your Japanese Spitz Poodle mix by throwing a toy across your living room and allowing them to retrieve it for you! This dog is also likely to enjoy a daily walk. Apart from physical exercise, it is important to provide this intelligent little dog with plenty of mental stimulation. Puzzle toys are a great way to engage the mind of your Japanese Spitz Poodle hybrid. You may also want to enroll this dog in agility competitions. It is equally as important to exercise the mind of your Japanese Spitz Poodle hybrid as it is to exercise its body. Poodles are very outgoing and affectionate. The Japanese Spitz is smart and full of energy. When combined, you will have a dog that loves to play and spend time with its family. Neither the Japanese Spitz nor the Poodle is a particularly territorial breed. However, to ensure that things go well, it is best to socialize your Japanese Spitz Poodle properly with other animals starting in puppyhood. Socialization will help to ensure that all pets in your home get along harmoniously! This dog will easily pick up on all kinds of new tricks. With so much energy, this hybrid is likely to learn tasks quickly and complete them with lots of wagging and excitement. Since this dog learns so quickly, remember to form a close bond with them at an early age. Potty Training Considerations You should know that this mix could take some effort in the house training department as a puppy and maybe even as an adult. This is not because a Japanese Spitz Poodle hybrid is unintelligent. Although this dog is smart and easy to train, it has a very small bladder. This means that it cannot wait for more than a couple of hours to use the bathroom. As you teach your Japanese Spitz Poodle mix not to go potty in the house, remember that their bladder will not mature fully until they are at least six months old. As such, you will need to let your puppy outside to use the bathroom at least every hour for a few months. Even when fully grown, this small dog will likely need to go outside to defecate more often than certain large or medium dog breeds. However, since this mix is so smart, you may be able to install a doggie door. As long as you have a fenced-in yard, this dog can easily be trusted to go in and out of the house as needed. Although the Japanese Spitz is one of the rarer breeds, Poodles are very popular in the United States. Remember to never purchase a Japanese Spitz Poodle from a puppy mill. Instead, find a toy or small dog breeder with experience caring for both breeds. Take your time and get to know the breeder before reserving your puppy. This will help to ensure that you get a healthy, happy puppy with a good temperament. Try to bring home your puppy at exactly eight weeks old. This is the ideal time to begin forming a bond with a young dog. After all, these dogs can live for many years! You definitely want to make a good investment and start things right.
