By Carolyn E. My husband, two boys and I are the proud owners of two Goldendoodles, one named Fenway love those Red Sox and the other named Eli. As I write this letter they are almost eleven months old. For anyone wanted two puppies at once, I would advise you to really think about it. If we were to do this all over again, I think we would wait until one puppy was six to eight months old before getting the second puppy. Though we have adjusted and are still adjusting our dogs are so completely different that everyday is a new learning experience. Our breeder, Linda Rogers, had strongly suggested that we wait and take puppies one at a time and it was only after much convincing on my part that she agreed to allow this, after I convinced her we could handle it! It is Steve and Linda's Timshell Farm policy to take one puppy at a time, train and raise it, then add a second puppy later. On our first night home we gave both puppies baths, let them explore took them to the bathroom several times and off to sleep they went. We never heard a sound for the entire night. They slept together, but separate, in the same crate with a divider. They each had their own comfort pup which smelled like their mom. To this day, there has never been an accident in their crate. Aaron, our older son, took them out separately several times. Both boys were very good about never letting them out of their sight. We learned early on that if there was an accident in the house there was no one to blame but ourselves because we weren't paying attention. My husband came home at lunchtime everyday to take them to the bathroom and feed them and let them run around. Very controllable. They attended dog school to learn their manners and everyone loved them. Then they got to be about six months old and the world changed! I think Fenway turned into a rebellious teenager and thought the world was his oyster! The four humans in the family just look at each other and shake their heads! He learned to jump on everything and everyone. Very cute when you're a little puppy, not so cute when you can knock people over. Eli has never jumped! Possibly because he's so much bigger and heavier than Fenway! Thought that would help with the energy levels and also reinforce the dog training they learned and forgot overnight. It did!! Once the weather got nicer and they were able to just go outside and run they became much much calmer. Fenway is still a wild man outside while Eli runs for a bit and then lays down. The boys taught Fenway to catch a tennis ball though he refuses to give it back! If left unattended their diets consist of socks, shoes, paper, pillows, comfort pups and as of yesterday Aidan's brand new Red Sox hat!! In closing finally we are all in agreement that Fenway and Eli are keepers! We love them to death as does everyone else in the neigborhood. Cars still stop and ask "what are they". They were and are still a lot of work. We have a bathroom, feeding system that seems to have been working for the last several months. We just bought a second crate so they each have their own space to sprawl out and sleep! They even know their own crates! So I guess the only thing I would do differently is get the second after having a chance to work with the first one, one on one. Training is very difficult with two because you separate them to train and the other one is barking and distracting so nothing is really being learned! While most have the cuddly, teddy bear, fluffy Doodle look, their genetics can vary greatly depending on their generation and what parents they have. So, what is a multigenerational goldendoodle? There can be significant differences between what breeders refer to as F1, F1B, F2, and multigenerational called multigens Goldendoodles. Knowing the distinction between the 4 types of Goldendoodles within this breed can help choose the breeder and desired traits you hope to find in your new Goldendoodle. What is GANA? This organization sets the standards and affirms that these generations are acceptable and contribute to the diversity of the Goldendoodle gene pool. The grading scheme definitions of each generation per the Goldendoodle Association of North America can be found here. Before diving into their differences, what does F mean? The number following the F signifies the generation of the Goldendoodle. For example, a first-generation Goldendoodle is bred from two non-Goldendoodle parents a Golden Retriever and a Poodle while a second-generation Goldendoodle is bred from two F1 Goldendoodle parents. Knowing these distinctions helps identify what traits can be expected in Goldendoodle litters. What are Goldendoodle Furnishings? A key element to discuss is the role that furnishing genes play in the looks and shedding factor of the different generations of Goldendoodles. The Golden Retriever carries zero furnishing genes and the Poodle carries two furnishing genes. Furnishing genes are responsible for the presence of hair that continues to grow in length most noticeable on the face and muzzle. Golden Retrievers have short, smooth hair on their face due to their lack of furnishing genes. Poodles, unless shaven, will have long hair covering the face and muzzle as a result of carrying two furnishing genes. Because furnishing genes are dominant, it takes just one copy of this gene to present in long hair on the face. However, two furnishing genes are necessary to facilitate a non-shedding coat. The curl genes involved in each generation will dictate the type of coat each puppy inherits. Golden Retrievers carry zero curl genes whereas Poodles carry two curl genes. All F1s will inherit a total of one copy of the curl gene allowing their coats to be wavy in general. For those puppies who inherit no curl genes, their coats will be straight to slightly wavy. Until that point, the only way to know if a breeder was producing high-shedding or flat-coated Goldendoodles was via trial and error. We now know that the curl and furnishing genes are unrelated and that the curl genes have no impact on the shedding factor. They are known for their friendliness, being the perfect family pet, and being great for first-time dog owners. They were bred with this very purpose in mind. Of course, their precious appearance helps too! The coats are typically wavy due to inheriting one curl gene from the Poodle and no curl genes from the Golden Retriever. F1 Goldendoodles benefit from hybrid vigor making them healthier than their purebred parents. F1 Goldendoodles have proven to have better longevity than their pure breed ancestors. This hybrid vigor comes from crossing two unrelated dog breeds. F1 Goldendoodles cannot be guaranteed to be non-shedding. F1 Goldendoodles can also come in smaller sizes. This allows smaller genes to affect the outcome of the size of the offspring. There is no way of knowing ahead of time how these two inherited traits will match up in any individual puppy. In the other F1B option of crossing an F1 Goldendoodle with a Golden Retriever, no puppies will inherit two curl genes and no puppies will inherit two furnishing genes. This pairing will likely produce higher shedding coats that will be straight or wavy. Additionally, the F1B Goldendoodle can also benefit from hybrid vigor. Under the healthiest and most cognizant of circumstances, these Goldendoodles can be healthier than their purebred parents. These benefits will only be fortuitous should your breeder be careful about choosing their breeding pairs utilizing health screening protocols. The hybrid vigor will not diminish if the breeder is thorough in health testing and ensures that the parent breed lines are uncrossed, meaning that the parents are unrelated. Like the other generations of Goldendoodles, the F1B generation is highly intelligent, easily trainable, and beautiful. They are created by crossing two F1 Goldendoodles. This generation requires careful selection of parents based on the traits desired in the offspring. Each puppy has equal chances of inheriting zero, one, or two furnishing genes as well as zero, one, or two curl genes. These genes can be inherited in any combination in a single puppy. Puppies inheriting two furnishing genes will likely be non-shedding. Puppies inheriting one furnishing gene will have reduced shedding most likely equal to an F1 Goldendoodle. Those inheriting no furnishing genes will have coats very similar to a Golden Retriever including a smooth face and moderate to heavy shedding. All three coat types are possible in the F2 generation as well — straight, wavy, or curly. Type means traits that all puppies in the same litter inherit eliminating the variety of possibilities within a single litter. Just as in the F2 generation, without careful selection of breeding pairs, a variation of furnishings and coat types can be created. In the multigen, breeders can begin to be more consistent as they can select breeding prospects using DNA to ensure two furnishing genes are present in both parents. This ensures all puppies will inherit two furnishing genes giving them a higher chance of being non-shedding and allergy friendly. The number following refers to how many generations of that breed have been produced from that specific line. These differences are important to understand to know what characteristics are possible in specific pairings. As you can see, not all Goldendoodles are the same! Each generation has its characteristics that are different based on their parents. Knowing the differences can help you choose which Goldendoodle is right for you and your family. It is important to know the breeder you have selected is knowledgeable about the genetics of each parent dog to be able to predict the traits that will be produced by crossing specific dogs together. You may not understand the genetic reports on each parent dog, but the breeder should be able to confidently explain them to you. Breeders that have not done DNA profiles on their breeding dogs before breeding them cannot begin to provide you with accurate predictions of the traits your future puppy may possess. These traits do not only include information on furnishings and coat types, but also diseases each parent may carry as well as the colors they are capable of producing. This certification includes the assurance that your Goldendoodle was produced ethically and is from healthy parents. Why Does Goldendoodle Generations Matter? While responsible breeding may lower the risk of some potential issues, their ancestry or the Goldendoodle generations plays a major factor in their physical characteristics, the potential health issues they may be at risk for. The first-generation Goldendoodle will always inherit the shedding gene from their golden retriever parent, shedding anywhere from some to just as much as a full Retriever. Because F1s should most always shed, we recommend going for a genetically coat-tested multigenerational doodle if your search for a hypoallergenic dog is a priority. Goldendoodle Generations Labeling Standards It is best to understand the terminology that is used when labeling the Goldendoodle generations to have a better understanding. While it may confuse you at first, it will be easy once you get familiar with them. The Number The number is the main indicator of what generation the Goldendoodle is. For example, the number 1 is for the first generation and 2 would be for the second generation. That letter means backcross. This is an indicator that the Goldendoodle generation was to bred back to a purebred poodle. While some are bred back to a purebred Golden Retriever, however, this is not common. What are the Different Goldendoodle Generations? F1 — First Generation An F1 is the direct result of breeding a golden retriever with a poodle. The mixture of genes tends to lead to a decrease in the health risks that may be associated with purebred specimens. Shedding — The majority are light-shedding to heavy-shedding. Allergy Potential — This iteration is sometimes fine for families with very mild allergies but not recommended for those with moderate to severe allergies. Coat — Their coat can naturally grow from 3 to 5 inches and requires combing as well as weekly grooming. You can opt to get the fur cut back every couple of months to make your pooch lower-maintenance in the upkeep department. They can have straight, curly or wavy coats. Grooming — Moderate to high requirements. F1b — First Generation Backcross Backcrossing is breeding a hybrid back to one of the breeds it originates from. It can be from a purebred Poodle or a purebred Golden retriever. However, the traits of either the retriever or the poodle can be intensified. Breeders tend to cross a doodle back with a poodle to increase the chances of a lower shedding litter. Hybrid vigor is still present, but since multigenerational litters have a greater chance of inheriting diseases from the same breed line, genetic health testing becomes more important to rule out disease carriers. It may range anywhere from inches or longer and can be straight, wavy, or curly. Coat — F2 coats can be straight, wavy, or curly. Please know that the coat texture of young puppies is not a reliable indicator of future shedding level, as the curl gene is distinct from the shedding gene. Grooming — This varies significantly according to the genetic mix the individual pup inherits. As a first-generation doodle, the F1 parent carries a predictable mix of coat traits both shedding and non-shedding genes , however, the F1b is a mystery. Unless genetic testing is performed on the F1b parent, the litter could result in a litter similar to an F1b litter or F2 litter see above. Genetic screening for health diseases also becomes more important whenever two parents with the same breed ancestry are mixed. It depends on what coat genes the F1b parent carries. Allergy Potential — Working with a breeder who coat tests parents or puppies would be the safest way for a family with allergies to adopt an F2b puppy. Otherwise, the odds of bringing home a hypoallergenic pet are not in your favor. Coat — Coats may be straight, wavy, or curly. Grooming — Moderate to high grooming requirements. When it gets to this stage, breeders often refer to them as multi-generational. At this stage, traits from either breed line can be emphasized either positively or negatively. If the breeder does not know the genetic makeup of the parents, some guesswork is still at play, and puppies of any shedding level can be created. Allergy Potential — Working with a breeder who is familiar with genetic coat testing is the safest way for a family with allergies to adopt a Multigenerational puppy. Although it is rarer to produce non-shedding puppies with straight coats, it is still possible. Usually, multigenerational coats are wavy or curly. What is the Best Goldendoodle Generations? Generally, the Goldendoodle are healthy dogs. The most important factor is if you are an allergy sufferer. If shedding and allergies are not a factor to you, you can never go wrong with F1 or you can choose the generation depending on the coat you want for your Goldendoodle. F1 Goldendoodle puppies have one Golden Retriever parent and a Poodle parent. F1b Goldendoodle puppies have one Goldendoodle parent and one Poodle parent. F2 Goldendoodle puppies have two F1 Goldendoodle parents. Second generation Goldendoodles are much more genetically diverse than first generation and first generation backcross Goldendoodles. F2b Goldendoodles An F2b Goldendoodle puppy is technically a second generation Goldendoodle as both of its parents are first generation. F2b Goldendoodle puppies have one first generation Goldendoodle F1 parent and one first generation backcross Goldendoodle F1b parent. Guide to Goldendoodle Generations What do all of the letters and numbers mean? F1 Goldendoodles are a mix of a Golden Retriever and a Poodle. F1 refers to the generation of Goldendoodle that was born from breeding a purebred Golden Retriever and a purebred Poodle. Breeding two F1 dogs produces an F2 or second generation of puppies. Breeding two F2 dogs, which would produce an F3 Goldendoodle, or third generation of puppies. Beyond that F3 dogs bred together are considered multi-generational. Goldendoodle Generations Coat Types A lot of the emphasis for breeders and buyers of Goldendoodles is on the coat. After all, the primary goal of breeding a Goldendoodle in the first place is to get the low-shedding coat of a purebred poodle with the good-natured trainability of a Golden Retriever. They are suitable for families with mild allergies and have plush, straight to loose wavy coats. This first generation backcross is a popular choice. F1B Goldendoodles have a high chance of being non-shedding and are recommended for families with moderate to severe allergies. F1B Goldendoodles have plush, loose wavy to curly coats. Like F1B Goldendoodles, F2 and F2B Goldendoodles have a high success rate for non-shedding, making them suitable for families with moderate to severe allergies. This second generation backcross is the last highly predictable generation of this hybrid. Therefore, the breeding of F3 Goldendoodles is rare except in dedicated programs committed to testing and ok with a high chance of less desirable puppies. Breeders who do strive to produce multigeneration Goldendoodles with predictable traits rely on behavior, health, and coat testing. Shed Locus Test The shed locus test determines how much dogs will. The test looks for different types of genes that the dog can have. Depending on which genes the dog has, it will either shed a lot, a moderate amount, or very little. The test will tell you which genes the dog has and what that means for shedding. The test will also tell you what kind of genes the dog will pass on to its offspring. So, make sure that your dog is free of genetic conditions they may pass on. Female breeding dogs must be healthy enough to hold up to the rigor of pregnancy, birth, and pup raising. Responsible Goldendoodle breeding starts with a health pass. Since this is a mixed-breed dog, health checking must be performed for conditions in both breeds. What About Hybrid Vigor in Goldendoodles? While hybrid vigor is a common advertisement for doodles, in reality, a mixed breed puppy is just as likely to get health conditions from both breeds than not getting the health conditions of either. Two copies of the wrong gene can result in symptomatic disease, regardless of whether the breeding individuals are the same or different breeds. In the limited research that has been done, crosses between goldens and labs resulted in dogs with better training potential but a higher prevalence of multifocal retinal dysplasia than the average prevalence in their purebred parent breeds. This makes an argument for hybrid vigor in trainability, but not health. It is crucial to test the parents of Mini and Toy Goldendoodles for patellar luxation if you plan to breed smaller dogs. The screening should be approved by the OFA. Breeders frequently use Embark, which is OFA accepted, to test their breeding animals. The Goldendoodle Association of North America has an updated, exhaustive list of all health tests that should be done, depending on your breeding plan. Standard Poodles and Golden Retrievers Since these diseases are possible in both breeds that make up the Goldendoodle, extra care must be taken in screening for them. Hip dysplasia: This is a genetic disorder that affects the hip joints, causing them to develop abnormally. This can lead to arthritis and mobility issues. Signs Of Over Excitement In Puppies Your puppy is biting and snapping at your fingers repeatedly and with increasing force as you try to prise him off your arms and clothes. The puppy is barking rapidly at you, or snatching at toys as you try to take them off him or get him to obey simple commands. Games involving your children end in tears with the puppy jumping and snapping at their arms and legs. Your puppy spins about nipping and growling as you put your hand down to restrain him. If any of the above occurs in a puppy under six months old, it may be the result of over-excitement. Other clues to over-excitement are that the behavior is accompanied by a furiously wagging tail and interspersed with spells of tearing around the room bumping into things the zoomies. Is My Excited Puppy Aggressive? It is not normal for puppies under six months to become aggressive. Though it is easy to mistake over excited play for aggression. Even if he sounds ferocious! Aggression is usually born out of fear. And frightened puppies do not usually race about bumping into things. They normally attempt to freeze, withdraw, or even hide behind or underneath furniture. If you are concerned that your puppy is aggressive then do consult your veterinarian, but the vast majority of people who are concerned about puppies biting and growling, own a puppy that is playing. And if the puppy becomes over-excited during play he may well behave in the slightly crazy manner described above. Puppies can get very over exited when play with other dogs. Stop any game you are playing with the puppy. Put the puppy in a safe place to calm down and withdraw from him if you can. Decide on a strategy to help avoid over excitement in the future. If you are not at home, you may have no choice but to do this. Carry the puppy away from the source of the excitement and hold him firmly and quietly. Often, with a very overwrought and biting puppy it is much better to put him down somewhere safe and move away from him. Placing a blanket over the crate will help to calm him. Failing that place him in a puppy safe and preferably darkened room. Or outside in a puppy proof pen. The idea is to reduce mental and physical stimulation of all kinds — so if he can see less, hear less and is being touched less, this gives him chance to recover quite quickly. A few minutes is normally sufficient to enable a puppy to become calm. What Causes Puppy Over-Excitement? Before you make a plan to avoid a recurrence, it is a good idea to think about likely causes of over-excitement. In the vast majority of cases, it is because someone has been playing inappropriately or excessively with the puppy. Sometimes this is an adult, sometimes another dog. But often it is the result of the puppy playing with children. Or screaming and shouting which the puppy interprets as play barking and growling. After all, biting of any kind is not acceptable in grown up dogs, no matter how excited they may be. After all, noises are a great part of play for a puppy. Puppies also need to learn something called bite inhibition. This is where they learn how hard to put their teeth onto something. Their mother and siblings will have helped with this lesson, but if they were taken away from their family before 8 weeks old a lot of this work will have been missed out on. Fortunately most dogs have learned much better bite inhibition after a few weeks in their new home and are less inclined to leave a mark! Crates and play pens are really helpful for potty training, but they can also be useful to give your dog somewhere to go to chill out. A time to be lively, a time to relax, a time to eat, sleep and so on. Every interaction with a puppy is potentially exciting. Even stroking and cuddling. Noise and masses of things going on around your puppy are exciting too. Some puppies get hyped up more easily than others with physical play, and many will need to be restricted to very short periods of this kind of interaction. Lively play should be supervised and interrupted after a few minutes. At this point the puppy may need an opportunity to relieve himself outdoors, and may then benefit from a period of quiet in his crate. As he gets older remembering to stay calm yourself, provide interesting but relaxed activities and teaching your dog to relax will help you deal with new kinds of excited behavior and respond constructively. Helping Children To Calm A Puppy You may need to spend time showing your children how to calm a puppy with gentle stroking and quiet voices. They will soon see what a nice effect this has on the puppy and how much more pleasant he is when he is not overexcited. In the long run it is far better for children to learn to interact with the puppy through training games , than to roll around on the floor with the puppy. This becomes increasingly important as a Labrador puppy grows because he will be a big dog and must learn not to jump on people. Children enjoy it too. Teaching children to play safely with a dog is very important, especially as your dog grows and matures. Being an excited puppy is part of growing up. White may be a term used to describe a very light yellow. Even good, reputable breeders may use the term as that is what the public may know, but hopefully they explain this to you. These will be registered as yellow. Silver is a dilute of chocolate. As charcoal is a dilute of black and champagne is a dilute of yellow. But in a reversal of the trend today, in the early days of the breed the more common shades of yellow that existed were dark yellow to fox red. The lighter shades of yellow and cream that we think of as normal today, were actually quite rare. In fact, the first ever registered yellow was a dark golden color. However, through the mid to late s, lighter shades of yellow and cream became more fashionable and breeders sought to selectively breed for these colors. This is mostly my opinion and not concrete fact, but the two theories I have on why the lighter colors of Yellow Labradors became more common are: Firstly, during the early years of the breed the darker yellows and reds were more common. So when a pale cream or very light yellow was born, it seemed more exotic, rarer and hence more desirable. So breeders started to selectively breed for these colors and hence less and less reds were born. Secondly, since the middle s, a famous brand of British toilet paper, Andrex has used a pale Yellow Labrador in their television adverts. Their adverts went on to be shown in over countries for over 35 years. Most colors centered on a cream to light golden color. The dark yellows and reds fell out of fashion. But in the last 10 or 15 years, the range of available shades in the Yellow Labrador have once again widened. They stood out among the crowd and so they were more desired. This caused breeders to try to match the demand and selectively breed for lighter colors. Due to a lack of popularity of the dark red coat colors, it all but disappeared. But this new-found rarity in turn made the darker red Labs more desirable. So now there are many breeders who are selectively breeding to try to obtain litters of reds to meet the demand of people who want the rarer color. Things have turned full circle. Controversy Around The Red And Darker Yellow Shades Being uncommon in comparison to the black, paler yellow and chocolate shades does make some people question the red Labradors pedigree. They question whether in fact they are a pure bred Labrador or not? However, unlike the so-called Silver Labrador Retriever that is surrounded by accusations of outcrossing Labradors with Weimaraners to introduce the diluted coat color to the breed, no such controversy surrounds the darker colors of Yellow and Red Labradors. They are a genuine, pure bred Labrador, with a history going back to the earliest days of the breed. Another controversy is the fact that Fox Red Labrador breeders charge a far higher price than breeders do for the more traditional colors of the breed. They advertise their dogs as being a rare breed and charge a premium. There is some truth in this, but this controversy also follows many other breeds and colors of dogs. Are Breeders of Reds Irresponsible? There is some evidence to support this in a very few small cases, but there are some highly responsible breeders too and I think the good do outnumber the bad. Many people have asked if different colored Labs have different temperaments. Is the Fox Red Lab temperament different from the other Lab colors? In our experience, no a Fox Red lab has the same loving, friendly temperament as black, yellow, and chocolate Labs. Fox red Labrador breeders Labs come in three colors, yellow, chocolate and black. As well as some pale, dilute forms of those colors. The red fox Lab, or fox red Lab, is a dark coated variety of the yellow Labrador Retriever. Breeders are selecting darker red Labrador Retrievers to breed from as they become more popular companions than paler yellow Labs. Sometimes known as the ruby Labrador or fox red Lab, these are smart, energetic dogs are best suited to active owners. Yet at one time, almost all Labradors were black. This was partly due to nature, and partly due to a little human interference. Chocolate and yellow Labs were both harder to breed for and less desirable. Horrifically, yellow or brown puppies were often culled at birth! Yet all three colors of Labrador Retriever, black, chocolate and yellow including the red shade , share the same origins or history. Bred to be hunting companions, with bags of intelligence and a friendly disposition. In recent years, these rarer colors are becoming more popular. Which leads to more people selectively breeding for them. And therefore more dogs being born with these coats. Red Fox English Lab vs American Lab The trend in Labrador coat colors swung to paler and paler colors in the s, and remained that way for decades. Especially among the dog showing community. Fortunately a pool of dark yellow or fox red Labs remained popular in the working sporting dog community. Possibly because a pale yellow dog, being far too easy for wildfowl to spot, is not an ideal hunting companion. American Labs are slimmer built, with less stocky heads and chests. They have a stronger prey drive, are a little less forward and playful. Even today you are unlikely to find a Red Labrador with a show background. Any dog advertised as an English fox red Labrador will probably have a pedigree that is a mix of American and English dogs. It is largely from this pool of working retrievers that we now have the stunning fox red Labrador Retrievers that we see today. And because they are often the American Lab type rather than English Lab type, they are often taller and more athletic in appearance than the paler yellow Labs. And if you live in the USA, you may have to do plenty of detective work to find one at all. You may have more luck looking for an American Lab type, from working lines. They are very intelligent and trainable, with loyal, loving personalities. Although they have the usual Lab friendliness, they can also be a little more nervous and wary of strangers and slightly high strung. Lots of socialization and plenty of attention will keep these dogs happy. Coupled with lots of exercise, and both mental and physical activities to keep them busy. Presumably because breeders are selecting for the popular deeper coat color in order to increase puppy sales. There is a lot of pressure on breeders to produce certain colors. But a responsible breeder should not choose parents purely on the basis of color. Especially when there are not large numbers of fox reds to choose from. You may be tempted to skip this — but give it a go — it might be easier than you think! Think of a Labrador as a basically black dog. Black is the default color. The black coat is caused by a pair of genes called the B genes Your dog inherits one from his mother and one from his father — in a pair — like this: BB B genes come in big or little versions. So a black dog could have a pair that look like this instead: Bb Little b carries the code necessary to make a brown coat instead of a black one. BUT, big B is dominant and switches off little b. So little b only gets a say, if two of them get together like this: bb, and when that happens, you get a chocolate Lab! This is done by two little e genes. They also come in a pair like this: ee And when they get together they have the amazing power to completely block the genes that cause black and brown coats. A lab with two little ee genes cannot have a brown or a black coat and so the coat color now defaults to yellow. Now we are getting closer to our fox red color. E genes can also be big like this: EE or mixed like this: Ee, but when that happens the big E switches off the little e, and takes away its power. Yellow vs Red Fox Lab Coats A red Lab is a variation of yellow, and every red dog has those two essential little e genes that switch off black and brown. But then it starts to get a little bit more complicated. It centers on a pigment called pheomelanin. And it is controlled by two different sets of genes. The A gene controls the production of the red color. And the C gene controls whether or not it is fully expressed or diluted. This is what makes things a little more complicated. In fact, I am still over-simplifying it a bit. Otherwise the B gene will override them. And you are back to black or brown. Fox Red Lab Breeders Your first step when bringing any Labrador into your life should be to make sure that this is the right time for you to do this. The next step is to find a reputable breeder of Labradors. Finding a nice fox red stud dog and making a list of all his recent matings is often a starting point. You are most unlikely to find a good breeder who only breeds fox reds. This is because color is not the top priority for a responsible breeder. And remember, in most yellow litters there will be a range of shades. Puppies may darken as they grow, or they may not. No breeder can guarantee you the final color of your puppy. Make sure that both parents have good hips, elbows and a clear eye test, as well as a PRA clear certificate. Then your pup will have the best chance of growing up healthy. Red Fox Lab Puppy Prices When it first starts to trend, a fashionably colored dog may be more expensive, and this is still happening to some extent with reds. My advice is to be wary of paying an unusually high price for a red lab puppy. It could indicate that you have found an unscrupulous breeder who may be cutting corners on health or other important matters. The reason I say this is because many respectable breeders will look down on selling puppies of different colors for different prices. In fact paying the same price irrespective of color could mean you have a better breeder, and a healthier pup! This shade gets increasingly darker over the first few weeks. By three weeks old they are starting to look much more like the Labrador you know and love. By the time you take them home at 8 weeks old they will have that lovely fox red shade. Not all the puppies in a litter will be the same shade, even if both of their parents are fox red themselves. Just like any other Labrador, it will be important to dedicate their first few weeks in your home to getting them settled. Starting to work on important things like potty training and setting food habits. They really benefit from positive reinforcement training. Using rewards to help encourage them to behave in a way that will help them to fit nicely into your family. Start off with no more than a few minutes of formal exercise a day when they are small puppies. And work up to any big walks or runs very gradually over time so as not to accidentally hurt them. Did you turn up here hoping to learn about red fox Labs, only to find us referring to them as fox red instead? There are no consistencies in the way fox red Lab is spelled. Whether fox red is one word or two. Or whether the fox or the red comes first. Of course, we know fox red is much more special than that. At least it means you can spell it any way you like! I tend to say fox red Labrador, you can say redfox or red fox Labrador if it makes you happy. Ultimately they are all just gorgeous Labradors, with a darker shade to their yellow coat. Make sure you ask about the health and genetic history of both parents and about any health tests or clearances. The national breed club recommends hip and elbow evaluations, an EIC DNA test, and an ophthalmologist evaluation at a minimum. As a large, deep-chested dog breed, the Fox Red Labrador Retriever is at a higher risk of bloat. Bloat in dogs can be dangerous and can become fatal if the stomach flips gastric torsion. Labrador Retrievers are one of the smartest dog breeds and are highly trainable. Although they can become stubborn at times, they are eager to please and pick up on training quickly overall. Their energy and intelligence mean they can lose focus in training and get bored easily. However, training that is kept clear, consistent, and focused on positive rewards usually keeps them focused and responding well. Any color variant of the Labrador Retriever is ideal for beginner dog owners. Fox Red Labrador Retrievers have a short, dense double coat that is water-resistant. They shed year-round and more heavily as the seasons change. Brushing their coat a few times a week and daily brushing during seasonal shedding is usually enough to keep their coat healthy and looking great. Bathing is on an occasional, as-needed basis. Because their coat tends to protect them from the cold and they are one of the dog breeds that tend to love water , your Fox Red Lab may try to go for a swim regardless of the season. If they are an avid swimmer or tend to get into a lot of things, you may need to bathe them more often. It is highly recommended to give them a bath or at least rinse them off thoroughly after going swimming with your dog. Their nails should be trimmed once or twice monthly. This will help prevent ear infections. Proper dental care for dogs is essential for preventing the tartar buildup that lends to dental diseases like gum disease and tooth decay. Daily walks plus playtime, time to run, and other activities are usually enough for this dog. However, they will likely always be up for more activity if you are. They will mellow out a little, but also tend to maintain a puppy-like exuberance even in their senior years. Fully-grown Fox Red Labrador Retrievers usually stand inches tall and weigh pounds. Fox Red Labs generally live for years on average. Ever seen a fox red lab? They are not common but when I saw my first one I fell in love! Here is a little history on the fox reds. The fox red coat color is NOT a new shade or a separate color in the Labrador breed. The American Kennel Club Labrador breed standard states: "Yellow—Yellows may range in color from fox-red to light cream, with variations in shading on the ears, back, and underparts of the dog". Fox red or dark yellow were the original shade of yellow in Labrador Retrievers. This coat color dates back to the early 's. This dark color was the common color until after World War II. The lighter Labradors became more popular because they were rare at the time and therefore the deep fox red color was almost lost. Fox red labs new found rarity has made them very desirable and has put them in popular demand. I searched the country for quality fox reds with Champion lines to add to our family. I didn't realize what a difficult task this would be. There are few fox red lab breeders out there compared to the numerous others that breed the more common yellow shades. Picks are given in the order that the deposits are received, and if the particular pick is not available, then the client is given their choice of what remains, or waiting for the next litter to arrive. Deposits will be refundable until the time that the puppies are born. We ask that each family complete the puppy questionnaire, receive a response to the questionnaire and discuss options prior to sending a puppy deposit. Deposits can be made by mailing a personal check, cashiers check, or money order along with the completed puppy deposit form. The puppies are going through constant changes and at 7 weeks you will have a better pictures of what they are like. At 7 weeks of age we will do the last set of photos and do videos of the puppies. I contact each client in order of deposits received, and work with each client to match them with the puppy that fits best with their family from my observations of personality and their observations of pictures and video clips. All picks are usually made over days depending on how many puppies there are. If someone is last pick, and I feel the puppy personality is not a good match for the family I will give them the choice of getting their deposit back or carrying the deposit over to another litter. We allow our puppies to go home at 8 weeks. We will deliver within a reasonable distance, and we also offer delivery to Grapevine, TX for our Texas families. We are also now offering delivery to the Boston area on a frequent basis. Delivery fee is determined by the distance traveled and the number of clients serviced by the delivery. Puppies are dewormed at 2 weeks, 3 weeks, 4 weeks, 6 weeks, and 8 weeks. At 6 weeks, the puppies are given their first shots. PIctures are taken on a bi-weekly basis. We begin monitoring personality at 4 weeks of age. All puppies go to the vet for a health check prior to leaving us. All puppies are microchipped. Puppies come with a puppy packet that includes: A written guarantee for 26 months on hips and 18 months on eyes AKC paperwork Information on registering the microchip A ziploc bag of puppy food and feeding information A toy that has been played with by the puppy and its littermates. We have a couple of child safety gates up to keep the dogs out of certain areas and she mastered being able to unlatch those quickly by the latch itself. Limited Registration means that the dog is registered but no litters produced by that dog are eligible for registration. A dog registered with an AKC Limited Registration shall be ineligible to be entered in a licensed or member dog show. It is eligible, however to be entered in any other licensed AKC event such as obedience, tracking, field trials, hunting test, herding, lure coursing, agility and earth dog events.
