You pop the solution into each ear and massage it for seconds and then wipe it out with a tissue — never use ear buds! Check with your vet for tips on hair removal and which solution to use. Your dogs nails should be done each time they get their coat trimmed and this is a service most dog groomers usually do as part of their clip. If you choose to do this, be sure to get your groomer, or your vet to show you how to trim the nails correctly. Grooming How frequently you choose to get your dog clipped will depend on lifestyle, how long you want their coat to be and, your regular maintenance regimes. It will be difficult to keep up with the matting in the longer coat, but with a trim, it is very manageable, and the beauty of the adult coat is better realized. Once your dog gets to 12 to 14 months, the adult coat will be fully established, and this is the coat you can expect to work with for your dog's adult life. I find that the picture to the right will help to clarify the instructions you will need to convey for your dog's face. It is best to print this picture and take it with you to the groomer. A three-fourths inch blade don't go shorter than one-half inch will keep your dog's coat nice and full but give a smooth consistent length all over. If you like your dogs coat longer, your groomer should have a guard they can use to achieve this. The legs are typically just a little longer than the rest of the coat if you trim the coat to three-fourths inch. FEET: The feet will need a "slipper" cut to achieve the floppy, full leg look. Highly active Labradoodles may adequately wear down their own nails when exercising outside, but many will need extra attention. This part of the nail contains a lot of vessels and nerves. Response to fleas, ticks, or other parasites. Examine the pads and digits for any injuries, dirt, or pests. If you cannot find any, your dog may simply be feeling anxious or bored. Try exercising or playing with them to prevent boredom. If licking and chewing persists, it can be a good idea to take your Labradoodle to the veterinarian. The play dead trick is pretty much what it says on the tin: a party trick where the dog has to pretend to die! Proper Oscar winning stuff! This is going to show you how to teach an adult dog to play dead, but if you have a puppy this can also be used to teach a puppy to play dead too. What are you waiting for? Firstly though just a reminder… all of the training that we do at Zigzag is with positive reinforcement and uses rewards. It really is how dogs learn best. Instead of giving the dog a treat as soon as it lies on its side, wait a few seconds, and then give the treat. Practice this a few times, adding a few more seconds each time. Some dogs will lie still and play dead for several minutes! Problems and Proofing Behavior If your dog already knows how to roll over, its natural inclination might be to go all the way over when you start to lure it to its side. This is a great time to get your clicker out to capture the exact behavior you want. Lure your dog onto its side with a treat, click your clicker immediately and give the dog a treat. If it tries to keep rolling over, step away for a minute. When your dog realizes that the treat disappears when it rolls completely over, it will stop. If you are having trouble getting your dog to follow the treat so that it ends up lying on its side, you can help by physically moving the dog. Gently push the dog over onto its side. As soon as the dog is in the correct position, click your clicker or tell him "yes" or "good" and offer a treat. If at any point in the training your dog makes more than two or three mistakes in a row, you may be moving ahead too quickly. Go back a step or two and practice. When the dog is repeatedly successful at the earlier step, begin the next step. Remember to be patient and consistent. Each dog is unique and learns at a different pace. Keep training sessions upbeat and stop training if your dog seems frustrated, tired, or bored. Always try to end sessions on a positive and successful note, even if that means switching to a simpler action like " sit " or "down" as the last thing you do. Not feeling well almost always manifests as changes in mood. What to do: You can help by allowing your Pug to retreat if she wishes, being sure that she has a great bed to rest on, and if she appears to be in discomfort placing a warm heating pad next to her abdomen can help be sure that this is set on warm, not hot, and that your Pug cannot chew on any cords. This is generally most severe if a person, dog, or other is no longer part of the household. But, a Pug can also feel quite down even if he does not see a regular visitor. If your Pug is feeling sad or down for this reason, it will be important to allow him to grieve the loss. If it was a household member that is gone, it will be normal for a Pug to roam the house looking for him, or to gaze out of a window waiting for that person to arrive. What to do: It can be hard to watch a Pug feel unhappy like this. While you will want to give him time to accept the loss, there are some things that you can do. It can help to engage your Pug in an activity that is new to him. This can be a walk in a new neighborhood, or a visit to a new place. Any sort of safe location in which he can see new things, hear new sounds, and smell new scents can help to perk him up. This can be a lake shore, hiking trail, pet store… any place that is novel. When you find a spot that your Pug seems to enjoy and that has let him shake off his bad mood for a while, try to make that a new ritual for both of you. Take him there as often as possible, but at least once a week at minimum. And of course, this is applicable to a negative change. Some examples include: Spending less time with his human A new household member human or pet A move to a new house Changes in the household vibe such as more noise, more visitors, etc. What to do: How you help your Pug come out of a funk will depend on what type of change triggered him to start to feel depressed. But, if the situation is already occurring, you can: Be sure to keep both pets separate in regard to where they eat, rest, and sleep. Even if you envisioned your Pug having a new best friend, that sort of bond cannot be forced. Until the two are ready, they should feel as if they have their own areas for food, and to rest both during the day and at night to sleep. If this is a matter of having two Pugs or two dogs, you may need to help them decide who the leader is. Hopefully, your Pug already sees you as the alpha. But with more than one pet, there is also an alpha dog, the leader of the animal pack. Normally it is the older dog; but, it is not always so and can also depend on gender. If the dogs are unclear about where they stand, you can help them by doing things for the alpha first. This applies to the order in which the food bowls are placed down, leashes are attached, dogs are let out, etc. Bowls in a certain corner of the kitchen, toys to the side of the sofa, etc. Dogs can feel wary until they understand that they are occupants and not just visitors, so it can take some time. Each day, walk your Pug from room to room. And when you take him outside, walk him around the perimeter of the yard. He may seem irritated or withdrawn. Any sort of commotions should be kept to a minimum. And if some of these sorts of things cannot be avoided, set up an area for your Pug to retreat to if he has the urge to get away from things. Some windows of down time are just fine. Days, weeks, or months on end can end up making a Pug rather depressed. Also, as a Pug matures, issues with boredom can increase. This is because as he ages, his comprehension of the world strengthens. What used to satisfy a puppy may not be enough for an adult Pug. He should have at least 2 walks per day, a session of some type of learning commands, a trick, heeling, etc. Pugs should have toys that encourage independent play. When a Pug Acts Restless The Pug breed can get a bad rep sometimes, being thought of as a touch lazy and inactive. But, Pug owners know that this breed actually has a pretty good energy level. With Pugs, there is usually a good balance of activity and rest. Mood changes that include agitation, restlessness, or irritation definitely point to some sort of problem. Reasons for acting restless include: Pent-up energy most common reason Health issue or injury possible We'll dive into each of these: 1 Pent-up energy The Pug is often underrated in this regard. But, Pugs can get very disturbed if they are not allowed to release their natural energy. This is very common in the winter , when weather keeps both owners and dogs inside more often, but can also happen just from not getting outside enough for his daily walks. Whining and cowering down Reasons for acting afraid include: Actually being startled or scared Feeling uncomfortable, mostly due to temperature We'll dive into each of these: 1 The most common cause is the one you assumed; the Pug is afraid of something. The tricky part is trying to figure out what it is, if the reason is not clear. In some cases, this can be related to the incredible sense of hearing that canines possess. A puppy or dog may have heard an alarming noise that his human simply did not pick up on. This may be other dogs barking, police sirens, or other such noises. If so, the episode should be over quickly. In other instances, the cause can be a mystery. It can be random things… a dog may see his reflection in a mirror and get spooked studies show that canines cannot identify their own reflection , or even a former tumble down steps that now make a dog wary when he goes near them. What to do: How you act will have a big impact on how your Pug interprets things. Since you are his leader, he will look to you for cues on whether or not his behavior is valid. If you coddle him, swoop him up, and offer soothing words of concern, that will just be giving affirmation that he should be scared. It is best to acknowledge that he has sensed something. And then, show him that all is well and re-direct his attention. Be sure that your body language conveys what you are saying. In the winter, some spots that you do not normally access, but your Pug does, like the floor can have drafts. You may wish to place clothing on your Pug like a soft shirt or vest. Once he has another layer on his core body, he should feel more comfortable. Or use his eyes to follow unseen things across the wall? If so, you are not alone. Lots of dogs react to things that their humans cannot see or hear. The reason for this is due to incredible canine hearing. Dogs hear things that we cannot hear without special instruments. We only hear things in the frequency range of , Hz. But, your Pug hears things in the much larger range of , Hz. And, your Pug can hear noises from 4 times the distance that you can. So, if your puppy or dog is reacting to something that you can neither see or hear, changes are that he is behaving that way for good reason. What to do: Do the exact same thing as stated above in cases of a Pug acting afraid with no reason. Acknowledge that he is noticing something, and then re-direct his attention. This is a pretty even-keeled breed, so any sort of strange, weird, or odd behavior usually has a root cause that should be assessed. A well-trained poodle is better prepared to live in the admittedly unnatural urban environments we humans have long adjusted to. Training helps with anxiety, sociability, and general adaptability. That said, there are a few basic training tips that we can cover before running through our poodle training timeline. Then, you take your dog to the park. They rely on the context. Poodle Puppy Training At Home First 30 Days Poodle puppies in the first thirty days of their lives are not even technically puppies yet. Male dogs, especially, will begin picking fights at the dog park. Training, meanwhile, will continue to regress. In this critical period, socialization remains as important as ever. Take your dog to the dog park weekly and continue leash training as well as house training. You can begin to experiment with some fun things, too, like agility training. There are 2 main elements: Having a clear plan in mind that will encourage a pup to learn quickly Having reasonable expectations based on the age of your Poodle In this section, we will go over all of the important steps for effective and fast training. Age to House Train This is most certainly not something that you will want to put off. Whether you have a brand-new Poodle puppy or an older, adopted dog that needs to learn, it is best to begin right away. Every day that this is not taught, is another day that the dog has wrong information about what to do and this just in and of itself will make housebreaking harder. Keep in mind that new puppies should not be brought outside to public areas or even your yard if there is a chance that other dogs have been there until the full rounds of puppy vaccinations are complete. Each vet schedule is slightly different; however, in general this is done by about the 4 month mark. If you are not sure, check with your vet. Having a Housebreaking Plan It's not uncommon for a puppy to pee or have a bowel movement with very little warning. And without a plan in place, this is when you'll see owners scrambling and picking up the pup while he dribbles urine as he's being carried out the door. While you will not catch every accident, you really will have much better success when you and all members of the family have a clear potty training plan in place. We would suggest reviewing what is needed, obtaining all of the necessities to be properly prepped, and then beginning. What is Needed Before You Begin There are a few things that you will need in order for housebreaking to be successful: 1 A supervision method. This is vital. Puppies or dog that have free rein in the house will be exceptionally hard to train. When you are home and are able to have your Poodle right by your side, use the tethering method. This means that your Poodle will be wearing a harness not a collar, since this can cause neck injury and will be on leash. The leash should be short and it should have a soft-looped handle, so that you can weave this through your belt loop or slip it over your wrist. When you are not home, or if you are home but cannot keep your Poodle near you, you'll need to keep your puppy or dog in a defined, secure area. Crates are not recommended; these are terribly confining and can cause a dog to feel both physically and emotionally stressed. Furthermore, they do not help with housebreaking; a dog will pee and poo when they need to. Gating off an entire room is also not recommended. This is too large of an area to do really do anything, and therefore there will still be pee and poo everywhere. One of the best methods is to use an indoor canine playpen. Pick up training and introductions to new situations in a few days when your puppy is more at home. Remember, you are a stranger to your puppy. No one likes to be bossed around by a stranger. Dogs see us as most dominant when we approach standing erect with the front of our bodies towards the dog. So, approaching a dog with the proper body language is of utmost importance. These techniques should be done on a daily basis and in a controlled environment: Until the dog gets over the issue, do not approach the dog with your body front and hand extended. The dog will see this as dominant and it will enforce the habit. Always have arms and hands in a relaxed position hanging to the side of the body. When the dog comes to you to get the treat, then use a clicker to imprint this behavior. Let the dog come around the front of you on its own. Give another treat. Click again. Do not bend over and try to touch the dog. Have the dog follow you and give more treats. Talk to the dog in a high pitched happy tone. Let your dog drag a leash so that you can grab the leash and then start walking away from the dog. Have the dog follow you, reinforce with treats. Do not leave the dog unattended with a leash on. When the dog is in the house you can have them wear a diaper with a tail hole cut in it. Get a grooming table and have the dog sit on it in your home environment. Be sure you have the dog secured with a grooming arm or an eye hook in the wall. Never leave a dog unattended, not even for a moment, on a grooming table. Have them sit or lie on the table or up to an hour at a time. This brings the dog to your level. Dogs truly live in the land of the giants with humans and this is intimidating to some dogs. Bringing the dog up to eye level makes them feel secure. This exercise can be done while doing housework or watching TV or other common indoor activities. It is harder to monitor how much food they eat when free feeding and a glutunous puppy may quickly become fat. Remember a thin puppy is less likely to develop hip dysplasia. We strongly encourage you to keep your puppy on the same food we provide for the first month. Both coccidia and giardia may live in the gut of a healthy poodle and they never have an outbreak. When their bodies are stressed they are more likely to develop an unhealthy balance and the result may be a sick puppy. Moving to a new home, leaving their Mother and siblings and diet changes are all stressful. We encourage you to make as few changes as possible to your puppies diet the first month. Changing to a different dog food — go slowly. It may take a month or longer to switch foods. If at any point your puppy develops an upset stomach go back to the level of food mix that they were doing well on. Should your puppy develop bloody diarrhea take them to the veterinarian, they have most likely developed gastroenteritis and may need some medication or possibly fluids.
