Vocality level 5 in 5 Disclaimer: While the characteristics mentioned here may frequently represent this breed, dogs are individuals whose personalities and appearances will vary. Please consult the adoption organization for details on a specific pet. This breed retains its hunting heritage, and loves to run, swim, and retrieve. The dog gets along well with everyone, although is somewhat reserved with strangers. The Poodle is excellent with children. Upkeep All Poodles need a lot of interaction with people. They also need mental and physical exercise. Standard Poodles will need more exercise and may especially enjoy swimming. They should preferably be brushed every other day or weekly for shorter coats. Poodle hair, when shed, does not fall out but becomes caught in the surrounding hair, which can cause matting if not removed. The pet clips are easier to maintain and can be done every four to six weeks. Interwoven in their ancestry are also several rough-coated water dogs. Perhaps the earliest incarnation of the Poodle was the Barbet, a curly-coated dog distributed in France, Russia, Hungary, and elsewhere. It is the German version, however, that exerted most influence on the modern Poodle. In France, it was known as caniche or chien canard, both referring to duck-hunting abilities. The Poodle was also drawn into service as a military dog, guide dog, guard dog, wagon puller for performers, and eventually, a circus performer. The coat was shorn close to facilitate swimming, but left slightly longer on the chest for warmth in cold water. The Poodle became favored by French aristocracy and eventually became the national dog of France. The characteristic clip was accentuated. In the 's, Poodle popularity in America waned. By the late s, Poodles had almost died out in North America. In the s, the breed staged a comeback that eventually placed the Poodle as the most popular dog in America for decades. Related Content.
We chose to breed Alapaha Blue Blood Bulldogs because of the temperament or nature thay were known for. I say were because unfortunately most of the "Alapahas" you will find today do not maintain the nature they were known for; stable temperament, loyal companions, hard working all around farm utility dogs, fearless, and great with children. This will not be a standard Poodle but a miniature or toy version instead. The Pooton is classified as a designer dog breed, meaning it was made based on the personality and looks that it would create. The Pooton is sometimes often called a Cotondoodle or a Cotonpoo. If this is your dream dog, then let me help you by referring you to some reputable Pooton breeders. All of the breeders below have Pooton puppies for sale. Pootons are actually quite affordable compared to other designer mixed dog breeds. Remember that if you happen to find one in a rescue, it will cost significantly less. This does not necessarily mean you will find a puppy. If you said yes, keep reading because we have four reputable Pooton breeders that all have Pooton pupppies for sale below. Auburn Hill Puppies The husband and wife team that run this kennel have been around dogs and various animals throughout their whole life. Both of these college sweethearts graduated from Iowa state university. Their home is located by the Mississippi River, around an area where a lot of corn grows. Their goal with their breeding is to raise dogs that are happy and healthy. They raise a few varieties of doodle breeds and the Pooton. They only ever breed first-generation puppies, which is also known as an F1. The breeders that raise these dogs go above and beyond by playing, stimulating, and even working with the dog on neurological stimulation. The first thing you need to do when you want to adopt a puppy is to fill out a puppy application. This helps the breeder match you with the perfect dog based on what you are looking for. This gets taken off the total price of the puppy. This is quite more than breeders typically want for a deposit. After the deposit has been received, you will place on the waiting list and be contacted in the order that the list goes. This breeder has a true passion for what they do as a breeder. They show all of their dogs and puppies, unconditional love. The goal is to breed dogs with excellent temperaments, health, and standards set by the breed. Once the puppies have been born, this breeder starts training and early neurological stimulation. This sets your puppy on the right path to become a very sound and intelligent dog. After you purchase your Pooton puppy, it will come with a health guarantee and full examination from a veterinarian. The breeder also includes a puppy care guide along with a starter pack which will contain some food , a toy, and usually a blanket. When the breeder posts pictures of the available puppies, that is when you will be able to place a deposit on the specific one you want. The Pooton puppies for sale cannot go home until they reach eight weeks of age. They have been operating this kennel for ten happy years now. I am going to be honest when I say their site is quite hard to navigate, especially when trying to find information about the breeder. I do know that they are a licensed breeder and get their license updated yearly. You have the option of calling to express your interest in owning a dog, or you can email the breeder. They seem to have a few litters each year of their different varieties of dogs. They know just how difficult it can be to raise puppies, and they have perfected the art. One of their favorite things is being able to see that child receive a puppy and become overjoyed with complete happiness. While Dan and Deb still oversee the puppies, they no long deal with potential customers as they are now in their retirement age of life. They do have a wonderful team that helps them with all of the day-to-day operations. Most mixed dog breeds are like this as it can be hard to find one that only rescues Pootons. The best piece of advice that I can give you if you are sure you want to rescue one is to search through rescues from the parent breeds. The American Coton Club is a place you can check out to see if they have any Coton de Tulear mixed breeds available for adoption. Of course, rescues like this are non-profit organizations that rely on donations to keep them running. You can view their current adoptable dogs and see if they have what you are looking for. Again it can be very challenging to find a specific mix like a Pooton puppy from a rescue. Overall I hope you read through my entire article as there are four very reputable breeders that you can use as the starting point for your search for Pooton puppies for sale. If you own a Pooton, I would love it if you shared more about your dog in the comments below. Give them small puzzles to figure out with treats as rewards, or hold energetic training sessions with games and fun new commands. Activities like these help prevent boredom and keep them active and healthy. The Poo-Ton is a highly intelligent dog, inheriting positive traits from its impressive parents. The most noticeable characteristics of this dog are the affection and love that they shower their people with, along with their energy. They are vigilant dogs and can be trained to function in multiple different capacities, such as a watchdog, albeit their small size. This breed is also called Doodle-Ton, Cotondoodle, or Cotonpoo because of the fluffy coat. Because of how intelligent this dog is and their desire to please their masters, they easily pick up new tricks and commands. They love to have fun and are quite responsive. Incorporating training games into their sessions helps keep them engaged and satisfies their playful nature. They are not known to be excessive barkers but may bark at strangers if they come close. Are These Dogs Good for Families? These dogs are great fits for families. They are rarely aggressive and love to play. These traits, combined with their small size, making them perfect pets to have around if there are small children in the home. This breed tends to be sociable and friendly. When these pups are socialized, especially if done early, they will be happy to have other dogs and even cats as new playmates. Training Due to their sweet personality, they have a deep desire to please their trainers and owners. During training, they pick commands up quickly with a firm consistency and plenty of positive reinforcement. Owning a Poo-Ton is as close as you might get to owning a fluffy angel. This breed is cuddly, loving, and smart. We might use these words interchangeably in this section. Like its parents, this breed is single-coated. One remarkable feature of this mix is that it has a low-shedding coat. That characteristic makes it a great pet for allergy sufferers. Away from that, the Poo-ton comes in a variety of coat colors. Pootons that are not playful are either sick, hungry, or anxious. This Poodle and Coton de Tulear mix will thrive in a home where it will interact with its handlers. Locking it away in a kennel behind the house or in your bedroom will make it fearful and poorly mannered. They are companion dog breeds who easily get anxious if there is no one around them. An anxious Pooton dog will bark a lot, dig and destroy everything around them. If you are to go outside for more than 2 hours, keep her busy by giving her toys. You can also hire a dog sitter who will engage the dog when you are away The Pooton is an alert dog who makes an ideal watch dog. However, this Coton de Tulear Poodle cross makes a poor guard dog. They are not strong, to fight and repel an intruder Moreover, this mix of a Poodle and Coton de Tulear loves interacting with children and other pets in the house. What is the ideal environment for a CotonPoo The CotonPoo is a small dog breed that is best suitable for people who live in apartments or those who have limited living space. Their exercise needs are also easier to satisfy inside a small apartment, compared to other dog breeds. She is not best suited to live outside. They can also be an easy target to coyotes or birds of prey. Grooming The Coton de Tulear and Poodle mix has a curled coat that needs daily brushing. This coat can easily mat. With that, ensure you have used the correct brush and comb to groom your dog. Bathing your dog should only be done if its coat starts smelling. However, you can wash your breed mix after every weeks. Other grooming aspects you should not forget. This breed will need an average of 40 minutes of exercise a day. The breed can swim if taught. It can also participate in canine sports. These activities will help burn any excess energy. The Poo-ton will enjoy having short walk sessions with you daily. Besides physical exercise, your Poodle and Coton de Tulear mix will need mentally stimulating activities. For example, you can get your dog puzzle toys or build an agility course to challenge your dog. Its trainability is because of its intelligence and love of pleasing people. Training a Coton de Tulear and Poodle mix puppy should start when the puppy is 8 weeks. Start with house training. However the Coton doodle mix is a difficult dog breed to potty train. You have to be patient with this Coton de Tulear mix. To ensure success, take your Pooton dog outside frequently. Also feed her consistent times in a day. Have a specific place outside where she will be urinating. Instead, wipe the pee and continue with the training. Also incase you find her in between her accidents, pick her quickly and take her outside where she should be dropping her accidents. You also need to train your dog commands like sit, come and go. These commands will help control your dog everywhere. Pootons are sensitive dogs and easily get scared if you shout at them during training. Yelling at them will only make them scared. Socialization Socializing any dog is key, the Poo-ton is no exception. Start socializing your Coton Poodle mix A. A the doodle-ton by exposing it to a lot of sights and sounds. You can take your dog to a busy street or market. This is a place your dog will interact with many sights and sounds. A Socialized Coton Poodle mix dog is not afraid of other dogs. Such a dog is not always startled by sounds around. You can also enroll your Coton de Tulear Poodle cross in an obedience class where these skills can be instilled. The Poo-ton should eat dog food for small dogs. Such a diet should have a large portion of meat protein. Vegetables and fruits can also be included for an added boost of vitamins and minerals. You can also read : Coton de Tulear feeding guide You can also give your dog fish oil for the necessary omega fatty acids. During puppyhood start with puppy dog food then transition to adult dog food once your dog is about 10 months. Home Cooked dog food is a great option for this poodle and coton de Tulear mix. However, home-cooked dog food has some drawbacks. Lastly, there is the risk of giving your dog a less balanced diet. Thus, involve your vet if you decide to give your breed mix home-cooked dog food. Also, remember treats can affect the overall number of calories your dog takes in a day. Too many of them and your Coton Poodle mix will be overweight. Lastly, hydration is important for this breed mix. Lack of doing so can predispose it to urinary tract conditions. Thus, always ensure your dog has a supply of clean water daily. You get puppies less susceptible to health issues associated with their parents. Here are some health issues that are likely to target your Poodle and Coton de Tulear mix dog more than other dogs. Should a Coton de Tulear Mix take after their Coton parent, they will be a small dog with a lovable, charming, and playful personality. They will love spending time around their favorite humans and being affectionate with them. A Coton de Tulear loves being the center of attention. They will often engage in clownish and comedic antics to get the attention they love so much. They also tend to be friendly and affectionate dogs with just about everyone. This means they tend to get along well with children, other dogs, other pets, and even strangers. If they take after their Coton parent, you can expect something similar in a Coton de Tulear Mix. But, the other parent breed will introduce their own set of quirks and traits, so you want to make sure you ask the breeder about them. Although the breeder should have started some socialization and training, it is up to you to continue to train and socialize a puppy once you get them home. This will help your Coton de Tulear Mix puppy grow into a confident, well-rounded, and well-mannered dog. Coton de Tulear tend to be highly adaptable dogs. They do well in apartments, larger homes, and most climates. They do tend to get cold easily, so you will want to bundle up with some winter dog products while out on walks during the winter to keep them warm. Because they bond so closely with their families and love attention, they do not do well with alone time. If the other parent breed is also highly adaptable, then you can expect a Coton de Tulear Mix to be highly adaptable as well. You still want to talk to the breeder about the other parent breed in the mix as they will introduce their own traits that could affect adaptability. Are mixed-breed dogs healthier than purebred dogs? Just as a mix could inherit none of the conditions common to their parent breeds, they could just as easily inherit all of them or some combination of them. From the Coton de Tulear side, potential health concerns to be aware of in a Coton de Tulear Mix include heart disease, eye conditions, and hypothyroidism. They can also be prone to developing allergies and sensitive skin. You can also ask about any health tests or clearances that have been done. The Coton de Tulear is an intelligent dog that picks up on things quickly and is eager to please. This makes them a highly trainable dog breed that is a good fit for owners of all experience levels. If the other parent breed is also highly trainable, then you can expect a Coton de Tulear Mix to be a highly trainable dog as well. If the other parent breed is more difficult to train, first-time dog owners may want to be prepared to enroll in puppy training classes in case they need them. A mixed-breed dog can inherit a coat that is similar to one of their parents or one that is a mix of both of them. Should a Coton de Tulear Mix inherit the Coton coat, they will be low-shedding and require grooming every weeks. If they are kept in a short puppy clip, weekly brushing is sufficient. If their coat is kept longer, they will need daily brushing. Cutting nails once or twice a month is usually enough to keep nails from growing too long. Dental disease is one of the most common health issues in dogs. As a small dog breed, a Coton de Tulear Mix is even more prone to developing dental issues, which makes practicing good dental care for dogs even more important. Daily brushing or use of an enzyme toothpaste in addition to regular cleanings at the vet is ideal. Coton de Tulear tend to sit in a low to moderate activity range and will often match whatever you are doing. Although they may be energetic while playing or being active with you, they are not high-energy dogs and will tire out relatively easily. If the other parent breed is similar, then you can expect a similar activity level in a Coton de Tulear Mix. If the other breed has a different activity level, then you will need to be prepared for that potential range in a Coton de Tulear Mix. A fully-grown Coton de Tulear usually stands inches tall and weighs pounds. The other parent breed could have a big effect on this, especially if they are the mother, so you want to ask the breeder about them. That can give you some idea of what size to expect in a fully-grown Coton de Tulear Mix. Coton de Tulear generally live for years. Although the other parent breed may affect this slightly, you should be able to expect a similar life span for a Coton de Tulear Mix. Currently, we do not have any Coton de Tulear Mix puppies available, but we can alert you when new Coton de Tulear Mix puppies are available! Just enter your email address and click submit! With their signature bat ears and expressive eyes, French Bulldogs, or "Frenchies" as they are lovingly known, have captured the hearts of many dog lovers around the globe, consistently ranking among the most popular breeds. Renowned for their easy maintenance and the ability to thrive in apartment living, French Bulldogs are a city dweller's delight. Their small size, typically weighing under 28 pounds, makes them perfectly suited to compact urban spaces. However, their charming personalities and heartwarming companionship are universally loved, irrespective of city or countryside living. This breed's laid-back nature does not mean they're devoid of fun and play. On the contrary, French Bulldogs can be quite playful and are known for their often comical and entertaining antics, which only further endears them to their owners. Their affectionate demeanor, combined with a remarkably low barking tendency, makes them a joy to have around the house. French Bulldogs are sturdy, compact, and stocky, with a powerful muscular build that contradicts their small size. They have a smooth coat that comes in a variety of colors, from fawn and brindle to white and grey. Their facial expressions are human-like, and they're known to "talk" using a complex system of yawns, yips, and gargles. However, owning a French Bulldog does come with responsibilities. Their brachycephalic short-nosed nature makes them prone to certain health issues and less tolerant of extreme temperatures. Despite their muscular appearance, they are not the best swimmers, and care should be taken around bodies of water.

How about some details regarding their feeding habits, behavior, medical needs, grooming regimen, and exercise requirements? In this section, you will find everything you need to know to keep them healthy and assist with things such as toilet training and teething. She will discipline them and make sure they learn to be independent. They then begin to go to the toilet independently and venture away from mom. At week 8, they play, can be housebroken, and bark when startled. The famous GSD ears will start to stand up, and you can begin leash and crate training. They must be handled and groomed and realize that human commands and dominance are the norm. During this time, the mother will nurse the pups until they are old enough to begin eating puppy mush , which is softened kibble. Allow puppies to eat as much as they like at each meal. At 6—8 weeks, their first shot from the vet is due. Smith, Shutterstock 12 weeks is a turning point for your pup. Their coordination will come on in bounds, as will their learning and social skills. They will be eager to learn but easily distracted, so have plenty of patience. If you become angry, it will stunt development if they become fearful of you. Your pup is officially into the juvenile period now. All of his puppy teeth should be developed by now and are normally very sharp. So, beware of your fingers when playing. At 12 weeks of age, puppies can start to eat three to four set meals a day with measured amounts. Purpose-made dog-approved chew toys are best, not teddy bears or old shoes. As they grow through this period between three and six months, GSD puppies are more juvenile than babies. They will be more boisterous and energetic. But on the plus side will feed easily, be more friendly with animals and people alike, and more than likely be housetrained if you have managed them correctly. They will be stubborn at this age when training and could ignore you, or not come when called. The best approach is to ignore any sassy attitude and only praise and fuss when back to being obedient. His internal organs and systems are fully developed and functioning as they should, while the skeleton is still growing. His full set of adult teeth should be present and correct. Your GSD is now becoming independent and will want to roam different areas and interact with their world on many more levels. Be aware that they could weigh 50 lbs at 6 months, so caution is needed with control and safety as they explore. He may also seemingly forget commands that he has been taught. It is best to ignore, not mollycoddle, any fearful reactions to new things to not reinforce the negative behaviors. By 6 months of age, you can reduce the feedings to three per day, now paying attention to the total calories consumed. Between the ages of 4—6 months, he will shed his puppy coat too. He might still be a bit goofy, gangly, and stubborn when it comes to training. German Shepherd females are reaching sexual maturity at this age. They may have their first estrus heat period. So, be mindful of letting them off the lead during this time if other dogs are around. At 9 months, your GSD can be tested for heartworm and treated if needs be. Speak with your vet about this for more detail. You can add small amounts of solid adult formula into the puppy food to get him used to the texture. Making it the optimal time to stimulate them as much as you can with obedience training and work activities. Your GSD should be comfortable in all situations, and with all types of company as their bond with humans should be well established. Their unique personality and quirks should be apparent and set them apart as your dog. They will have developed vocal and body language traits that you recognize and use for their needs. If male, he will be reaching sexual maturity and cocking his leg when urinating. He might also be looking to challenge dogs and humans for the title of pack leader. The key to cementing all your hard work so far is to be consistently firm with any boundaries he tries to push. By 12 months, they should be on adult formula only. German Shepherds stop growing between 2 and 3 years. This is when they fill out too. It starts to slow at around the age of 1, but he will continue to grow until he reaches maturity. During this time, they are considered to be adolescents. This is the same for their mental maturity too. This is the same for all German Shepherd types. Females tend to mature faster, both physically and mentally, than male German Shepherds. There are different stages within this time frame before maturity. And these are the neonatal stage 1—2 weeks , the transitional stage 2—4 weeks , the socialization stage 4 weeks to 3 months , the juvenile stage 3—6 months , and the adolescent stage 6 months to 2 years. Research has shown that neutering dogs can affect their growth. But how exactly? But early indications show that early neutering can increase the length of time that the bone grows. Meaning potentially taller dogs. But this also poses questions about whether this affects the joint alignment and whether it can cause any problems. And for the German Shepherd breed and his heightened propensity for hip dysplasia, this is a concern to be aware of. But waiting for full skeletal maturity also poses risks. Because neutering for females can reduce mammary cancer. If spayed before her first heat, it can eliminate the chances of this type of cancer altogether. As they will be able to offer you tailored advice for your German Shepherd. Dangers of Growing Too Quickly or Stunted Growth The dangers of growing too fast can affect their skeletal development. Conditions caused by growing too quickly are joint dysplasia and osteochondrosis. By feeding him a kibble that is designed for large-breed puppies will help control the rate at which his bones grow. This is because they have the optimum ratio of calcium and phosphorus levels in the food. So, always feed him large-breed puppy food during his developmental stage. This is most common in German Shepherds, but also in some Labrador Retrievers. It is an inherited disorder of growth hormone deficiency, and it will make the affected pooch always appear puppy-like. Growth Distinctions of Different German Shepherds. As the German Shepherd growth chart suggests, a German Shepherd dog reaches full size and adult weight after one year. A growth spurt can occur between 1. The result of this late growth is an up to 10 percent increase in height and weight. Although you can consider a German Shepherd fully grown by one year, there may be additional factors that influence the growth of German Shepherd dogs. Is Your German Shepherd Healthy? Improper development can occur for many reasons. It could be as simple as your dog responding poorly to their dog food. Your feeding schedule and portions might not be sufficient. Your dog could also have a basic nutritional deficiency that you need to correct. Yet, being underweight or overweight can signify serious health problems. Weight loss can occur when the syndrome develops. Dogs typically show signs of EPI at between six months and six years of age. Parasites Dogs are highly susceptible to parasites. Deworming medication helps to reduce the risk. Yet, almost all puppies experience a parasitic infection at least once. Upon infection, your dog is at risk of serious weight loss and other troubling symptoms. Diabetes Mellitus Diabetes mellitus can affect any breed but has an above-average occurrence in German Shepherds. These dogs need insulin daily to accommodate for the inability to metabolize sugars. If your German has diabetes, severe weight loss can occur in a short period. Diabetes typically affects canines that are four years or older. It is the most common cancer in German Shepherds. Up to three percent will develop HSA. In most cases, this condition sets in at around nine to 12 years. Dietary Deficiency Do you have your German Shepherd on a raw food diet? Puppies often run underweight when receiving their nutritional requirements through raw meat. This diet is healthy and effective but needs monitoring, as not all dogs respond the same. Review the diet plan with a veterinarian and confirm there are no digestive or metabolic issues. Also, do not forget the importance of exercise! Clear Your Concerns with Coverage You put your heart into loving your dog like a child, but some things are out of your control. Health struggles can affect canines as much as humans. Even purebreds from AKC-certified breeders are not safe from serious health struggles both early and late in life. All you can do is prepare yourself to overcome complications. What if cancer happens? What else could happen? Peace of mind is great as a dog owner. Is coverage the answer? Get pet insurance quotes and see for yourself. Frequently Asked Questions German Shepherds German Shepherd Dogs are one of the most popular breeds and are my absolute favorite breed. That's why I've had five in total, three boys and two girls. From their loyal and obedient personalities to their beautiful coats and markings, they bring joy to many homes, including mine. With impressive intelligence, these puppies are easy to train and make excellent companion animals. The German shepherd is a large breed, usually weighing between pounds for males and up to 75 pounds for females. Their coats require minimal grooming but will benefit from occasional brushing. German shepherds are very active dogs who love to run around; they need plenty of exercise to stay physically and mentally healthy. They also enjoy activities such as agility training or nose work games where they can use their smarts! Factors Influencing Weight But what about their size? German shepherds can vary in size based on gender, age, nutrition, and because of their breeding. For example, a German working line shepherd is much more energetic than the more laid-back American show line dog. A puppy from working lines may weigh less than the average on the charts. Be sure to consider factors such as gender and environment when monitoring your pup's development. A good rule of thumb is that by eight weeks of age, a German Shepherd puppy should weigh between pounds, depending on the genetic factors mentioned above. By six months, most male puppies will weigh between 49lbs — 57lbs with an average weight of 53lbs, and a female will weigh between 44lbs — 49lbs with an average weight of 46lbs. For this reason, when consulting a weight chart for a German shepherd puppy, it's essential to understand the breed, lineage, and pedigree of the dog, as well as the sex of the dog. Our puppy weight charts are specific to German Shepherd Dogs and consider all these factors. It's an excellent tool for monitoring your pup's growth and health. These charts show the average expected weight range for male and female German shepherds at different ages, from puppies to adults. Knowing the expected range can help ensure your pup grows normally and stays within healthy boundaries. By six months, a male German Shepherd will weigh 53 pounds on average, whereas a female will weigh about 46 pounds. Our chart differs from others in that you can track your puppy's weight based on his actual weight at a point in time. Many other weight charts are either for non-specific breeds, or if they are specific to a German Shepherd, they only give you the averages and a range. While this is all useful and included in our charts, what is missing from many others is what weight your puppy will likely be based on his actual weight now. Most people bring their new puppy home at 8 weeks old 2 months. The range for a female German Shepherd puppy at that age is between lbs. As you already know your puppy's weight, you can estimate how much they are likely to weigh when older using our chart. For example, if your puppy weighs 14 lbs at 8 weeks old. To estimate how much they are likely to weigh at 6 months old, you would find that weight on the chart and follow it down to the 6-month-old row and see that she would most likely weigh 46lbs by the time she is 6 months old and 68lbs when fully grown. Of course, these are just estimates, and all puppies grow at different speeds, as will yours. Another way this chart is helpful is if, using the same example, your puppy weighs 14 lbs at 8 weeks old and then jumps to 49 lbs at 6 months old, instead of the predicted 46 lbs. In that situation, you would follow that new column down and see that she is now closer to weighing 70 lbs when fully grown. They are heavier-boned, more muscular, and have deeper chests. If you know what you're looking for, you can distinguish a male from a female German shepherd by looking at their heads, as a male is larger and have a more masculine look. Using the German Shepherd Puppy Weight Charts To use this chart, find your pup's current weight along the top and go down the left side of the chart to find his age. If he is in range, you can follow that column down to see what he will likely weigh at each age milestone. For example, if your male German Shepherd puppy weighs 18 lbs at 8 weeks old, then you would find the nearest weight at that age on the chart. In this case, it's .In this instance, he would weigh approximately .Under no circumstances should you try to adjust your dog's diet or exercise to fit in with the chart; it is merely a guide. German Shepherd Weight Chart for Female Puppies Female German shepherds, on the whole, have a much narrower head and nose and have an overall feminine look, especially around the eyes. If you know what you're looking for, you can guess whether they are male or female by looking at their face. Having said that, my girl, Ava, was very tall for a female and was often mistaken for a boy, even when she was wearing her pink collar and leash! But I still think her face was much more feminine than her brother Hudson's. This breed of dog has unique growth development. During the first three months of their life, a German Shepherd's body goes through a significant growth spurt. Typically, they can double their birth weight in the first week! At 12 weeks, you can expect your pup to weigh about pounds for a male and pounds for a female. This growth spurt will continue through five months old; by the time they're six months, you'll likely have a large, goofy puppy on your hands. After that initial growth period is over, you'll find that your German shepherd will gain weight slowly from then on out until it reaches its full adult size at around two or three years old. On average, female German Shepherds reach an adult weight of pounds, while males reach pounds. German Shepherd Puppy Height Chart German shepherds come in a range of sizes, some taller than others. It can be helpful to know the different heights of German shepherds to ensure that the one you choose fits your lifestyle and needs. When looking at a German shepherd height chart, it's essential to remember that males tend to be larger than females. Depending on where they were bred, most standard-sized male adults will stand between inches, while female adult German shepherds typically reach inches in height from paw to shoulder. Below is our height chart for German shepherd puppies you can use to estimate your puppy's height at each age milestone based on his starting or current height. It also includes the average percentage of adult height reached each age milestone. If your puppy's weight is outside the guidelines, it may be less of an issue than you think. Puppy weights can vary greatly depending on breed, genetics, and other factors included on this page. While ensuring your puppy receives proper nutrition and exercise is essential, several factors can influence their weight. One way to determine your puppy's adult weight is to check with your breeder. They can make an educated guess as to what your furry friend will weigh once they reach adulthood. A reputable breeder should have a good understanding of their dog's genetics and be able to provide insight into the typical size range of their litter. This information can give you a rough estimate of what weight you can expect for your German shepherd as they grow older. Another factor to consider when determining the adult weight of your pup is their parents' size, and again the breeder can give you much more information on this. You can also speak with your veterinarian about your puppy's overall health and development, and they may be able to provide some insight into their expected adult size. It's important to avoid becoming too fixated on your puppy's weight if they fall outside the standard guidelines. Don't worry if your puppy is a little bigger or smaller than listed here, and if you still want to determine their adult weight, you can also use the puppy weight chart for a large or giant breed dog here. Conclusion In conclusion,German Shepherds are a fantastic breed of dogs, and understanding their growth and development is essential for pet owners. Knowing the average weight and height of male and female German Shepherds can help you be better prepared for your new pup's growth. With the proper diet, exercise, and vet care, your German shepherd will be healthy and happy throughout their life. Keep in mind that these charts are only a general guide — every pup is different! A 3-month-old German Shepherd should weigh between 17 lbs - 26 lbs for a female, with an average weight of .For males, it'll be between 22 lbs and 30 lbs, with an average of 26 lbs. How much does a 5 month old German Shepherd puppy weigh? A 5-month-old puppy will weigh between 40 lbs - 49 lbs for a male with an average weight of .A female GSD puppy will weigh between 35 lbs - 44 lbs with an average of .When will my German shepherd puppy stop growing? Most German shepherd puppies continue growing until they are two or three years old. You might like these. However, there are certain breeds that are easier to train than others. Thankfully, German Shepherds fit into that category because they are very intelligent and quick learners. This includes house training , crate training , basic obedience commands as well as learning tricks. We recommend attending a puppy kindergarten class as part of your German Shepherd puppy socialization strategy. Once your pup knows their basic obedience commands, you can enroll them in Schutzhund training aka IPO. Partnership and teamwork between yourself and your dog are the basis for this type of training. Note that the Schutzhund environment is not a place for dogs with aggression issues, neither towards other dogs nor people! If they pass that initial level which includes a temperament test, they can move on to IPO 2 minimum age 19 months and IPO 3 minimum age 20 months. That said, protection dog trainers recommend starting training classes that include bitework and high jumps once your German Shepherd puppy is 12 months old. Dutch and Czech are two other languages that commands are frequently taught in. Stanley, my former long-haired GSD dog walking client, started going to Schutzhund training when he was a little over 12 months old. His owners practiced commands in German with him on a daily basis, and I remember getting a print out of his German commands as they asked me to use them on our walks as well. Lots, ha! German Shepherds need a minimum of 2 hours of physical exercise per day, but generally speaking, the more exercise you can provide your GSD with, the more they will thrive. Remember, German Shepherds are high-energy, athletic dogs bred to be active all day long, especially if they come from a working line! Physical Exercise Ideas for German Shepherds As far as physical exercise, this can be a mix of walks, runs, bike rides, fetch and playtime. This is Nala, one of my former pet sitting clients. She was crazy about frisbees and balls. One of my favorite ways of increasing the energy and calories a dog burns on a regular walk or hike is by using a doggie backpack. Mental Stimulation for German Shepherds Besides providing a good physical workout, dog backpacks also burn mental energy. As you probably know, bored dogs can quickly become destructive as they figure out ways of entertaining themselves. For example, chewing up your furniture and shoes, scratching doors, raiding your kitchen trash can or digging up your flower beds. So do yourself a favor and make sure your GSD gets plenty of exercise on a daily basis. Remember, a tired dog is a good dog, and that applies to German Shepherds as much as it does to any other dog breed! Former GSD client Remi pooped after a long walk. Bottom Line So, how big does a German Shepherd get? Well, German Shepherds are medium to large size dogs, so they can weigh anywhere between lbs. That said, the average expected weight for a male GSD is between lbs, and the average expected weight for a female GSD is between lbs. Both reach sexual maturity somewhere between months and are considered fully grown at about the 2 year mark. Keeping that in mind, your GSD breeder should be able to give you a good general idea of how big your German Shepherd puppy will grow to be! Helps ease anxiety in their new home. We started our program in Prince George 14 years ago. When we started our program, we just had our two girls; Tillie and Jilly-bean, 14 years later, here I am still loving what I do and still making beautiful puppies. We have a much larger breeding program now, that is solely ran by just Ken and I. It is a ton of work but we love it and it shows. Believe it or not, we only have one Labradoodle that is our forever soul-mate, Lulu, all the rest live in Guardian Homes. I love my Guardian Homes, we could not do the work and keep such a great schedule without them. Each and every one of our breeding dogs have amazing lives, filled with attention and love on a daily bases, which is the way every breeder should operate, in my opinion. Our puppies are all raised in our home. We have different rooms for different ages and stages of puppy-hood. My mom, who lives in Penticton, and my dad who lives in Lake Country, are often here to help as well. My mom makes all my special Puppy Go-Home Blankets and my sister, Alenna makes all my bags, leashes, collars, and water bowls for the pups. I love being able to send each and every puppy home with the same unique gifts; that are all handmade with love. When the kids were younger we could only handle a half a dozen litters a year. There were other responsibilities with the kids such as sports, schooling and just plan business with them being so young. Now that they are older, we are able to manage about two or three litters a month. Keeps me hopping but that is how I like it. History Where are German Shepherd Dogs from? Perhaps never in the history of any breed has such concerted effort been put into improving a dog, mostly due to the formation in of the Verein fur Deutsche Scharferhunde SV, an organization in Germany devoted to overseeing the breeding of the German Shepherd. Breeders sought to develop not only a herding dog but also one that could excel at jobs requiring courage, athleticism, and intelligence. During World War I, they were the obvious choice for a war sentry. The Wolfdog was later dropped as it caused many people to fear the dogs. How big do German Shepherd Dogs get? A foster family helps a dog in need become more adoptable by teaching them house manners and by providing a consistent source of love - something they might not have known before. Being a foster parent is not an easy task and is not for everyone. It is however, the hardest job you'll ever love. Foster homes go through the same interview and review process as potential adopters. Fostering can be anywhere from a few days to a few months. Please contact us if you are interested in finding out more about one of our Adorable Adoptables. We look forward to speaking to you! Snow Capped Shepherd Rescue. Adoption Policy We require an application first so we can show you dogs who might be right for your home. We know our dogs and once we get to know you better, we can help you select your next family member! Exceptions can be made, however, for first-time adopters who show the confidence and leadership tendencies that purebreds will respect and respond to. Counselors have to use good judgment in assessing the attributes of the adopter, as well as of the dog. If you have doubts, get a second opinion from Robin or another experienced counselor. Almost all of our dogs come from the Central Valley and are used to space; it is harder for them to adjust to apartment living, but please check local animal shelters, there are always plenty of dogs available for adoption! If you have submitted an on-line application but have not been approved by our volunteer, please do NOT come down to meet dogs as we won't be able to show you any. Our main priority right now is to keep our staff, volunteers and you healthy during these difficult times. No on-site screening at this time. Once approved and told to come meet dogs, we will be happy to help you. If you're just "shopping around", please apply at a later time. Thank you for understanding and for opening your homes to one of our deserving dogs! Please refer to our website for the most accurate and up to date information. We are always looking for new volunteers — providing temporary foster homes for these dogs is the big need, but there are many more opportunities to help. Please consider joining our efforts. We also help owners who, due to unforeseen circumstances, find themselves unable to keep their dogs. Adopting Your New Canine Family Member All of the Front Range adoptable dogs are home fostered, or in cases where no foster home is available, some may even be boarded. Approved Applicants will receive detailed info on how to meet select dogs. Our entire adoption process typically takes no more than weeks from your submitting the application until you have a dog in your home. We rely solely on volunteers to place our dogs. Our volunteers have busy lives with their own families, jobs, school, pets, etc. We DO NOT discuss individual dogs with applicants until the adoption process has been completed because there is often more than one applicant interested in a particular dog, and we do not want to promise the same dog to more than one applicant. You can take home a shelter dog the same day. The first step is to submit a completed application. Your application does not obligate you to adopt, nor does accepting an application represent approval of that application. You do not apply to adopt a particular dog. The more open you are to gender, color and age, the more likely you are to find a dog with us. Next, we call your vet and your references. We are looking for people with a history of good pet care. Ideal applicants have lots of experience working with GSDs or large breed dogs. We want homes that accept that they are rescuing a dog and are willing to work with the dog to make him a good citizen. Yes, you will have to do some work. We will schedule a home visit. Once you have been approved to adopt from us we will contact you about suitable dogs and put you in contact with the foster parents. Since the foster parents know the dog the best, they are a key part of the process in determining which home and family is best suited for their foster dog. We get dogs into rescue on a regular basis and they are placed with previously approved adopters who have been waiting for their forever dog. It is best not to focus on any specific dog until you have been approved. We welcome your interest in a dog that may steal your heart but please remember that the dogs posted on our site today will most likely go to homes of applicants that applied weeks ago. Once dogs are available, we work with our current, approved applications until we find the right family for the dog. Once you are ready to adopt, we will give you all the information we have on the dogs for which you may be a good match. Meet Belle Our Beautiful Belle. Belle is a 6 year old fixed, vaccinated and healthy German Shepherd. She is loyal, loving and a very playful outdoor activity loving dog. She loves, and needs alot of physical activity and also really enjoys the water. Belle is looking for a home with no other animals or small children. Her home must be active and familiar with working breed dogs and their needs. She is used to daily walks and an active lifestyle and still has energy to burn! Belle was raised in a single animal home until this year when a human baby was welcomed. .The family is heartbroken but feels that Belle will be much happier without the antics of toddler aged children or infants. In her current home she has gone thru several basic obedience classes and is trained on an underground fence. She would do best with a normal fence and will not be able to be placed on a home with no fence due to her protective nature to neighboring animals. She is dog social but can be kind of a bossy lady to dogs her size. She would not be a dog that would do well at a dog park or 'free-range' group of dogs. She attends doggie day care for socialization and has since she was young. She would be happiest to live in a home with minimal dog interaction from surroundings and as the only animal. She would make the best companion to someone looking for a single dog to love! Belle aims to please and will be your very best friend. She is currently fostered in a home in Bay City. Anyone interested in meeting our adoptables must complete an online application, which is located on our website. This site is updated weekly so if an animal is listed they are available for adoption. Once the application is approved we will set up a meet and greet with the animal to ensure a good fit and then before adoption is complete we will schedule a home check to ensure a safe environment for the animal you are looking to adopt. If you live outside of the Tri-County area we will do our best to accommodate a home visit but it will rely on the availability and volunteers at that time. At this time we cannot do out of the state adoptions. We also do not do on-the-spot adoptions and we do not adopt out animals by a first-come, first-serve basis. We strive to fit everyone of our animals to the best match possible! We pride ourselves in responsibly placing animals in homes that are best fit for their needs. He is fully grown and weighs about 80 pounds. Salem was adopted for a short time and later returned for repeatedly escaping the 3. Prior to his first adoption he completed a full board and train session with Modern K9 Solutions. Salem has a great start on basic obedience and knows sit, down, and place. He has a soft mouth when taking treats. Salem will heel nicely on leash and has been worked on off lead training. Salem seems to love all people. He gets very excited when visitors come to the house. Salem loves children. In his former home Salem lived with a 2 year old child and was attached to her and allowed her to brush him and sit with him on his bed. He was good with other children visitors as well. Like most rescue dogs Salem requires a proper introduction when meeting a new dog. In his former home he lived with a female GSD and was friends with a golden retriever. He loves being outside but would not do well in a yard that shares a fence with another dog. Salem is looking for a home that has prior German Shepherd experience, where his people are home more than they are gone. He requires a yard with strong, foot, fencing. As a graduate from Modern K9 Solutions adopters who live near Warrenton Missouri can do some brush up training to learn how best to work with their new dog.

Sires and Dams are health tested with a unique criteria. Bruiser Bulldogs must breathe freely, move athletically while still maintaining that classic English Bulldog look that people around the world have come to love. Our goal has always been consistently produce puppies that are both a head turner and fundamentally healthy Bloodline development is the key to producing healthy bulldogs. We believe that foundational genetics are created through layer after layer of breeding healthy generations of bulldogs. Over the course of a decade, we have focused on a stringent set of health criteria to gradually improve the health and quality of the dogs we produce. The rare combination of experience, repetition, and ethical awareness of correct breeding practices has set our breeding program at the forefront of responsible breeding practices. The process truly is an adoption that affects the time, focus, and schedules of each household that gets a puppy from us. After a healthy puppy , the single most critical factor for a successful bulldog adoption is adopter support. The English Bulldog is unique breed with a unique set of caretaking criteria. Previous dog ownership, while helpful, is not enough to fully prepare an adopter for English Bulldog ownership. We always say the adoption is just the beginning of our journey. Through blog articles and email prep, we focus on such topics as socialization, crate training, disease prevention, potty training, nutrition, and basic puppy supplies to ensure that each adopter will be fully prepared for their new puppy. They are amazing breeders, and the puppies are so beautiful and healthy. Chubba Chubba Choo is almost a 1. Jason and Michelle run a successful business with healthy pups that are loved from day one. I highly recommend them!!! His puppies are gorgeous and I promise your heart will tug at you to bring more than one home. The mama dogs were so happy, sweet, pretty and just wanted your attention. The puppies were adorable, healthy and competing for you to play with them. Not one of those dogs ignored you and didn't want to be the center of attention. You could tell they all had great personalities and were very social. Puppychase is Bulldog Heaven! I was very satisfied with the purchase of our puppy. The environment is clean, cool and does not smell. That's hard to accomplish with so many dogs. The Bulldogs are well cared for and the property shows they are a top priority. I can't imagine not being pleased with any dog from Puppychase. The only regrets I have are not being able to take more puppies and I wish I could have seen the male Bulldog in person. I didn't even think to ask. Maybe next time! I have had 3 Bulldogs from PuppyChase. Chester 13 yrs old, Henry 8, and Gus 15 wks. Chester died 2 wks ago. Jason is so knowledgeable and loves his Bulldogs. The health and personalities of his dogs are perfect! The hardest part is picking which one. He uses a flight nanny to ensure the safety of these little guys which allows families from all over U. S A to have a dog from PuppyChase. What a beautiful home and kennel he has in Georgia. Thank you Jason and Michelle! Keep up the great work with breeding English Bulldogs and giving families and experience of a lifetime of owning and loving these beautiful dogs!!! Looking to bring home the next champion bulldog? These guidelines are what dog show judges use when they evaluate bulldogs in the show ring. Thus, before you begin looking to purchase a new bulldog puppy, you must study the skeletal and facial feature photos provided in the Standard first. This will help you develop a strong base line to use when evaluating a litter. Some breeders may prefer all-white bulldogs while others prefer brindle, for example. Some breeders may think breeding for the perfect head shape is most important while others may choose to emphasize angulation. Finding an experienced breeder is vital A show-quality pup rarely happens by accident. Experienced breeders who are trying to breed the next Grand Champion will place a lot of thought and careful-planning into the bulldog breeding process. Once the puppies are born, a reputable breeder will take care to ensure the puppies remain well-fed and are weaned at the appropriate times. In addition to guaranteeing the health and genealogy of a puppy, a knowledgeable breeder will be able to recognize which puppies are most likely to grow into show-quality dogs. It takes a lot of experience and a certain amount of innate ability. Some breeders simply have not developed a critical eye for spotting show quality. You can take their opinion into consideration, of course, but when it comes to picking a show quality bulldog puppy, make sure you have the education to be able to make an objective assessment on your own. You also want to wait a few weeks to see which puppy has a more assertive personality, as outgoing dogs tend to love showing more than more timid dogs. Look at the head from every angle; it should look broad and square. Stay open-minded One of the easiest mistakes to make when choosing a bulldog puppy is to go into the selection process with your mind already made up. This can cause you to overlook what may be the best puppy in the litter. Try to remain impartial. Know that not every litter will have a show dog In fact, many litters do not produce a single winning show dog, let alone a champion. If you want your bulldog to stand out from the competition, he or she has to be happy and well-tempered as well. When attempting to pick a show-quality bulldog, many people are drawn to the puppies that display the most energy and enthusiasm. Hyper dogs can be harder to train and may be thinner-than-ideal because they burn so much energy throughout the day that they have trouble staying within the Standard-recommended weight. Instead, look for puppies that seem even-tempered. These might be the puppies who hang back and observe their siblings when a new person walks into the room or who wait patiently by the food bowl when dinner time approaches. A show-quality dog will also appear to be curious in the world around them. Small, barely-noticeable faults in appearance that are apparent in puppies will often grow to become extremely obvious defects as the dog ages. A few defects to watch for include: Heads positioned directly on top of shoulders—This may be a red flag that the dog will grow up to have a short neck Slightly-bowed legs—The legs should be straight. A curved top-line—The top-line should be level. This article has several photos that illustrate well the difference between a good and bad top-line. Notice how the puppy moves When the puppy walks towards you, you should pay close attention to his or her elbows. Do you see them jutting in and out as the puppy moves? If the answer is yes, then this is not a good sign. If the puppy moves in a stilted manner or if their legs seem to bow close together when they run, then this could be a sign that the puppy has sickle or straight hocks. A show-quality puppy should be well-balanced and should not have any major faults or overly-exaggerated features. But some of the most ordinary-looking puppies grow up into show-winning adults. Before you make your decision, step back and take a look at the puppy as whole. While the temptation may be to place blame elsewhere like favoritism among judges or unfair competitive advantage , try to step back and take another objective look at your dog. Ask a few experienced breeders or dog show participants to give you an honest evaluation of your dog. They are the proud parents to Wildflower, Snow White and Declan, three celebrity bulldog show dogs. Share this post. It has been a long road but over the last sixteen years we have learned so much about ourselves and this wonderful breed. german shepherd puppy and adult - Their body temperature at birth is around 94 — 97 degrees. They are not able to regulate their own body temperature so they depend on their mother for warmth. They also cannot see or hear or eliminate on their own. They cannot walk. About all they can do is smell, suckle and crawl. They are totally dependent on their mother and the environment the first 2 to 3 weeks. They are mostly influenced by their mother and litter-mates during this period. We weigh the puppies everyday the first 2 to 3 weeks. Week Two: Poodle Puppies usually open their eyes around 8 to 10 days and their ears around 13 to 17 days. While sleeping all healthy and contented puppies will twitch. This is an activated sleep, characterized by muscle twitches. This is normal and healthy. Week Three: During the third week we will often see teeth start to erupt and the puppies will start to stand and walk around. Everyday is amazing to see these helpless puppies start to become independent. At this age their nervous system is more developed so that they can urinate and defecate by themselves. This is when the puppies will also start to play a little bit more with their litter-mates. This week is very important in the puppies emotional development. They will start not only the interaction with their litter-mates but also with their mother. We never start the weaning process during this week. While mother may come out of the whelping box during this week she will never be far. Week Four: At this age the puppies will be introduced to our own homemade puppy mush and their supplement which will help grow their immune systems. Puppies are born without an immune system and depends on their mother to supply this protection through her milk. Their body temperature will usually be around degree and they will be able to begin regulating their own body temperature. Every day they will eat more and more. The puppies will start to eat more food and move around more easily. They may even start to chase each other, bark, and bite. We still weigh them at least every other day if not every day. This is the time that the mother starts leaving the puppies at longer intervals of time and start to regulate their nursing. So this is a good time for us to introduce the puppies to the weaning box and start the weaning and potty box training. Week Five: Puppies start to establish some sort of dominance in the pack. Growth and development is rapid in this week. They become very aware of their surroundings and respond quickly to training. They begin to growl, play, challenge, and learn disciple from their mother. They also develop a bit of a competitive spirit. Training ability is developed and puppies are ready to begin learning. They also start to discover their toys and play with them more. Keeping them stimulated is important. Puppies can start to control their need to potty and now know they need to move away from the sleeping area. Good experience with people from week 5 — 7 will play a large roll in how they will continue to interact. Week Six: By this time it is amazing to see that little puppy wake up and walk over to the potty box to eliminate. Puppies enter their socialization period by the end of the third week. However, the most critical period — age six to eight weeks — is when puppies most easily learn to accept others as part of their family pack. The integrating of the human family is so important and will effect them for the rest of their life. The puppy brain waves look of an adult dog by about the 50th day, but he is not yet programmed — that is the job of the human trainer, and the job of his mom, siblings and other canine family members. This is when the fun begins for all humans and puppies. We know how important this time is for puppy to adjust to humans and how playtime stimulates their little brains to grow smart and wise. We introduce them to the outside. We bring in more interactive toys. We introduce them to the pool, weather permitting. If outside pool is out we use the grooming bath for water play. They also learn not to bite the human hand ever! It is at the 7th week, day 49, that we conduct the Volhard Test. This is actual one of several that will occur through its life. Instead of meeting new or familiar people and objects with curiosity puppies start to react with fearfulness. Anything that frightens them at this age may have a lasting impact. So take care that the baby is not overstimulated with to many changes or challenges at one time. This does not mean that your puppy will grow up to be a scared-y-cat; it is simply a normal part of development where puppies learn to be more cautious. Careful socialization during this period helps counter fear reactions. Because your puppy is actively working on social skills and is paying attention to both litter-mates and humans. Your puppy is learning at an extremely fast rate. This is why we will NOT hold any puppy beyond the 9th weeks. All puppies that cannot be picked up during puppy pickup week must enter their puppy into a training program. Weeks Thirteen — Sixteen: During this phase a puppy will attempt to challenge you for dominance. Here is where they test to see just how much they can get away with and test your level of tolerance. The more a puppy is allowed to get way with during this phase, may cause the dog to lose more and more respect for his owner. This may result in behavioral issues that can snowball if not corrected through training and obedience. Formal obedience should begin here. This will assist the dog in becoming the best he can be. This is the time your puppy will begin to understand and use ranking in terms of submission and dominance. Are you the owner going to be a good pack leader? Puppies will need to be taught what they can and cannot chew. Puppies need to be taught that it is never acceptable behavior to jump on a human, small or big. This is the time that the pack leader, the human in charge, especially needs to be confident, but firm with positive reinforcement. An obedient dog, a good canine citizen, is a pleasure to be with. A disobedient dog causes stress for all and can cause damage to things and other humans. What do I mean by that? The canine depends on a human, however, he is and his thinking is canine. He needs the human to communicate and set the standards for him. If the human does not then the dog will have no choice but set his own standards, doggy style. Be prepared to be a Good, very good, pack leader! Your puppy now understands that he has a pack which may consist of both humans and canine and his behavior will be most influenced by this group. You can expect your dog to challenge you more as he explores dominance and his role in the pack. Rather they are just working out what their rank is in the pack and what is expected of them in their position. Again: be a Good, very good, pack leader! Canines that are not spayed or neutered will also start exhibiting sexual behavior during this period. Be responsible and spay or neuter you canine. Some puppy owners hire a canine trainer to come to their home to teach them how to train. Some owners learn ahead of time what they need to do and immediately begin their puppy on this program. Still others have their puppy enter into our training program. We have much information on the website about training. And for our puppy buyer we are here whenever they need any coaching along the way. Be Consistent, Persistent and always have a Routine! How long should puppies stay with their mother? The ideal window is between 8 and weeks-old. They are healthy and adorable, and you want to bring them home as soon as you possibly can. However, the time your puppy spends with their mother and siblings is critical for development, and so it's important to make sure they spend this growth period with their litter. The first month For the first four weeks or so, puppies depend on their mothers for everything. This milk provides all the nutrition the puppies need for the first few weeks after birth. Weaning to solid foods Puppies start to experiment with solid food as early as 3-weeks-old. They still nurse, and mothers continue to produce milk for up to 10 weeks. Some nursing is for nutrition, but it is also a comforting, bonding activity for the puppies. Most puppies are fully weaned to solid food between 7 and 10 weeks of age, although the transition can occur earlier. Learning to speak dog Just as important for puppy development is learning proper canine etiquette and communication as part of a litter. For example, as early as 3 weeks of age, puppies start learning from their mother and siblings to eliminate away from where they sleep, which helps with housebreaking later. The pups are practicing hunting and communication behaviors that they need to perfect. One of the most important skills that puppies learn through play is bite inhibition and not chomping down too hard. If a puppy bites too hard, the other will cry out, signaling that the bite was too rough. Moms will do the same thing or may gently correct the puppies for getting too rough. This is a critical lesson to learn before heading out into the world, as other dogs will be far less tolerant of inappropriate puppy play than Mom! Biting is also a common problem behavior that can land a dog in a shelter or worse later in life. Puppies will also practice a variety of vocalizations and body language, learning to communicate with their siblings and mother. Socialization Puppies have an early critical socialization period from approximately 5 to 14 weeks of age. During this time, puppies are open to learning and experiencing new things, and the things they learn will affect how they go through the rest of their lives. Breeders and other caretakers should be exposing the puppies to novel sights and sounds on a regular basis. Puppies destined to be working or sporting dogs should be exposed to things they will encounter in their future roles, such as sheep wool for herding dogs, a variety of materials and obstacles to climb over for agility dogs, and training scents for future drug and bomb detection dogs. These safe exposures should continue after you bring your puppy home, but early socialization with litter-mates and the mother are also important for building confidence. The puppies will observe how their mother responds to new people and things and then mimic her behavior. If Mom is relaxed and friendly around new people, the puppies will likely be comfortable with strangers. Research has found that puppies who are separated from the litter too early are more likely to show fear, aggression, anxiety, resource guarding, reactivity and inappropriate play biting than puppies who stay with the litter for at least eight weeks. The ideal time The exact time that is best for a puppy to go to its new home can vary by situation, but most breeders and veterinarians agree that 8 weeks of age is a good minimum. Some states have laws in place preventing puppies from being sold any earlier. Eight weeks after birth, the puppy is eating solid food on their own, they have benefited from socializing with litter-mates and observing mom, and they are well within the ideal timeframe to bond with new owners. Breeders may also opt to keep the puppies until 10 or 12 weeks of age. Toy breeds in particular are often kept with the litter until they are 12 weeks old because they are so small and fragile. This gives the pups extra time with the litter, and still has them going to their forever homes in plenty of time to form a strong bond with their new people. And anyone who has welcomed an adult dog into their home knows that dogs of any age will still bond with their new owners as long as they have had socialization with people! Keeping the puppies longer does mean more work for the breeder, since they are responsible for all the puppies during those extra weeks. But if the breeder is putting in that time and effort to give the puppies a great foundation, then the extra time with their litter can be very beneficial to both you and your new puppy. Poodles are one of the most frequent breeds to win dog shows. They are available in standard, miniature and toy sizes. Though classed in the non-sporting and toy groups, poodles were originally bred for water retrieving. Regardless of size, play and social interaction are important for optimum poodle puppy development. Birth to Two Weeks Poodle puppies weigh about 4 to 6 oz. During this time, puppies are completely dependent on their mother for everything, including body temperature regulation. His senses and motor skills improve greatly during this time, and most poodle puppies will begin to explore the area around the whelping box. This is a good time for puppies to bond with humans through daily touch and gentle interaction. Four to 12 Weeks This is an important time period for house training and basic obedience. Some breeders, such as the owner of the website Poodle Junction, begin litter box training at this time. Poodles are also weaned from their mother starting at around five weeks. This process usually lasts until seven or eight weeks, by which time they should be eating solid puppy food exclusively. Puppies should be examined by a veterinarian and de-wormed at around six weeks, and most vets start the puppy vaccine series by eight weeks. At eight weeks, the puppies are old enough to go to new homes. During weeks eight to 12, the poodle puppy is adjusting to his new home, bonding with his owner and making associations between commands and rewards. During this time, puppies learn by testing their boundaries. Some poodle puppies may seem to regress in training during this time, but this is temporary and a normal part of development. It is important to be patient with a puppy and remember that he does not speak your language or understand all of your rules. Address issues like hand nipping with a verbal reprimand. Give the puppy an acceptable alternative, like a chew toy, and reward him for playing with it. Because poodles are an energetic breed, lots of play and exercise are important. This is a good time to start a daily routine that includes walks and games like fetch. Six to 12 Months During this time, a poodle puppy may challenge your dominance as he nears sexual maturation. Remain firm and consistent in your training. As your puppy nears the one-year mark, you can start transitioning him to an adult formula of dog food. Gradually replace some of his puppy food with the adult food over a period of several weeks. A rapid switch will cause digestive problems. This is also an ideal time to have your poodle neutered or spayed if you do not intend to use the dog for breeding. This helps reduce certain health risks and often eliminates some dominant behaviors. Talk to your veterinarian about the benefits of sterilization and the best time to perform the operation. Feeding a Poodle Overview Ensuring that your Poodle is on a well-balanced diet is one of the most important elements to keeping your canine family member healthy, both now and into the future. This section will cover all Poodle feeding guidelines including how often to feed a Poodle, serving sizes, dry vs wet, grain vs grain-free, and top recommended kibble. Don't need all of the details and just want to know which brands are recommended? New Puppies - The Importance of Gradually Switching Foods Before you even bring your Poodle home, it is very important to discuss with the breeder or shelter worker if you are adopting a rescue exactly which brand of food they have been feeding to your Poodle. A fast change in food can cause upset stomach and digestive problems. Breeders and shelters are buying food in bulk and have to feed many dogs which is a factor in which brand they choose; so there is a good chance that you will want to offer your Poodle something different. Have both the current food and the new food on hand and make a gradual switch over the course of 3 weeks. Though you will be leaving food out at all times, it is important that the food is fresh. Do not just top it off throughout the day, rinse and clean the bowl as necessary so that old food is not stuck at the bottom of the dish. Puppy: Starting at just about the 3 month mark, Poodles of all varieties should be eating 3 meals per day, plus snacks. Adult: When a pup matures into an adult, this does not necessarily mean that they should suddenly be given only one meal a day. Smaller dogs such as Toy Poodles and Miniatures often do best with 2 or even 3 meals per day. Standards have a bit more tolerance to a single dinnertime feeding, however many can also benefit from having food split up into two servings. Several snacks can be given in between meals and this is particularly helpful is a Poodle is a fast eater. How Much to Feed a Poodle Exact serving size varies quite a bit depending on the type of food. There is a big difference in calories between wet vs dry and low quality vs high quality. And, the amount of food that a Poodle should be eating depends on the dog's age, activity level, individual metabolism, and health status. Even the weather can play a role since dogs tend to eat a bit more in the winter and a bit less in the summer. In regard to calorie requirements, puppies need more calories per pound than their adult counterparts, approximately 40 to 55 calories per pound, daily, compared to adult dogs that need about 35 to 45 calories per pound, daily. S enior Poodles typically have slower metabolisms and reduced mobility and therefore usually require slightly fewer calories, in the 40 calorie per pound range. If you are feeding your Poodle a commercial food, follow the suggested feeding guidelines. These are usually pretty spot-on. Since these are based on both age and weight, do not estimate how much your Poodle weighs but rather know what this is within a pound or two. If you are feeding your Poodle homemade food, a rough guideline for serving size is 1 ounce of food for each 1 pound of body weight, daily. As you can imagine, this can vary quite a bit depending on the exact ingredients. Using the 1 to 1 rule as a starting point, what your Poodle consumes within 15 minutes is usually a good amount for each meal. Wet vs Dry If a Poodle had their way, most would opt for wet food. However, dry food is recommended since this is much better for the gums and teeth. In addition, dry kibble tends to be easier on the stomach and intestines and a diet of all wet canned food can lead to runny stools. Grain vs Grain-free Until relatively recently, there was not much debate on this subject; if a dog tended to have gastrointestinal or allergy issues when on a diet with grains, they were switched to a grain-free recipe. However, this changed when it was discovered that several dogs that were breeds not prone to dilated cardiomyopathy developed that particular heart disease and also happened to be fed grain-free kibble. Lots of pet parents immediately thought that they needed to change their dogs back to grains; however, many more studies need to be done. In fact, the most recent update from the Veterinary Medical Center at Tufts University suggests that 'grain-free' alone may not be the issue at play. For now, it is theorized that a certain diet dubbed a BEG diet may be to blame. This stands for boutique small local brands with exotic meats non-traditional meats like alligator, bison, ostrich, venison, and kangaroo and grain-free along with peas, legumes, or potatoes as one of the top 5 ingredients. Currently there are no recalls of grain-free dog food brands and the FDA is still investigating any possible links including the BEG theory. If your Poodle does not do well with any grains at all, you may wish to stick to a brand that has traditional meats like chicken, turkey, or beef or a fish-based recipes. And, if you are not sure about which grains your Poodle may do okay with, you may wish to opt for wholesome non-wheat and non-gluten grains like rice brown or white , oatmeal, quinoa which is technically a seed. Exact recommendations for the best foods include both grain and grain-free options.
