If one parent was big and one was small, your puppy could be at either end of the size chart of they could fall in between. Will the biggest Dog in the Litter be the Biggest as an Adult? It is a very common misconception that the biggest standard poodle puppy in the litter will be the biggest adult poodle. Actually, many different factors are responsible for which puppy will end up as the biggest adult dog. All large breed puppies need to eat food designed for large breed puppies. Therefore, make sure you feed your standard poodle dog food that is designed for large breed puppies. This is because standard poodles are big dogs compared to other dog breeds. By feeding a large breed puppy food to your puppy, you are giving your poodle puppy the nutrients that they need to help them stay healthy. These foods differ from regular puppy dog food in 4 ways by being lower in: Calcium Phosphorus and Vitamin D Most people think that large breed dogs need a diet that is higher in calcium to help support healthy bone growth. Large breed puppies will require a special diet to help avoid certain health risks. A standard poodle will require careful monitoring for any signs of orthopedic disease, obesity, and bloat. The development of these diseases is heavily influenced by the nutrition that you feed your standard poodle. What if My Standard Poodle is Overweight? There are many things that you can do to help your standard poodle lose weight. If your adult standard poodle is underweight you can usually just increase the amount of food that you are feeding them to help them add on a few extra pounds. Final Thoughts Your standard poodle puppy may look as if they are growing right in front of you. You notice them growing really fast right in front of your eyes. During this period, your standard poodle will just start to fill out. Once your standard poodle is about 2 years old, it should not get any bigger. Some will gain weight due to being overfed, but they should be able to maintain a healthy weight if you feed your poodle properly. By feeding your Standard poodle the correct nutrition, you are setting them up for a healthy and happy life. Their growth happens quickly with the correct nutrients received from the mother. Your pup will grow rapidly from this stage, gaining about 1 pound 0. Their eyes will now be fully open and also be able to hear sounds. Your puppy will weigh between 4 and 5 pounds 1. Most puppies will move on to their new homes at this age. They will receive their first vaccinations at this age, and it is a good time to have your vet give them a thorough examination to determine any issues going forward. Their bones and joints will grow and strengthen, so proper nutrition is vital for their development. By the time your puppy is three months old, it will be around 13 to 19 inches 33 to .They will be learning to explore and become active. Your Standard Poodle will weigh about 30 pounds .They will start becoming far more active and should be between 19 and 23 inches .This period is all about exploring and mischief. Both male and female puppies will stand around 18 to 22 inches .This is the full adult height for some standard-sized Poodles, and you should not expect any more significant height growth. This will range from 23 and 37 inches .Their weight will be between 45 and 70 pounds .Genetics and Common Health Problems When trying to work out how big your puppy will be as an adult dog, one of the best ways of determining this would be to look at the parent dogs. When you purchase a Poodle puppy from a breeder, you will have a chance to meet the mom and the dad. If they are on the large or small side for the breed, likely, your dog will also follow in their footsteps. If your dog contracts any common health problems that haunt this breed, his growth could also be affected. Hip dysplasia is also a common ailment in large breeds and causes significant amounts of pain and can affect growth. Bloat is another terrifying ailment for this breed that is potentially life-threatening if not caught early. It occurs in big-chested breeds where gas gets trapped in the stomach, requiring surgical intervention. Epilepsy is a hereditary ailment in Poodles and is known as Idiopathic epilepsy. Many of the above diseases can be avoided through proper nutrition and regular vet checkups. Neutering or spaying dogs too early could cause them to grow unevenly. This is because bone and joint development are affected by reproductive hormones. While Miniature and Toy dogs can be neutered at around six months, you should wait until your Standard Poodle is around one year old before the procedure is performed. At the right age, neutering or spaying your dog can have many health benefits, including reducing cancer risks, preventing aggression, and preventing unwanted puppies. Feeding Habits A balanced nutritional meal plan will ensure that your pet grows at the optimal rate, developing strong bones and joints to carry their weight. To prevent your dog from growing too quickly and to provide him with all the supplements and nutrients he needs for healthy growth, it is recommended to feed your Standard Poodle, a large-breed puppy food for at least the first year of his life. Physical Activities While Standard Poodles need plenty of exercise, be careful not to over-train your growing puppy, as their joints and limbs have not fully developed, and irreparable damage can be caused. Dogs need to be brushed and groomed regularly. Included in this regime should be teeth brushing. We know Standard Poodle dogs develop problems with their teeth. You will also need to maintain a healthy diet with plenty of exercise. Healthy Diet Large breed dogs like Standard Poodles should eat high-quality dog food crafted explicitly for them. Foods for large dogs differ from other dog foods in that they generally have higher levels of protein, fat, calcium, Vitamin D, and Phosphorus. Also read: Best Dog Food for Poodles 2. Their joints and limbs are not fully developed, and any strain could lead to a lifetime of complications for your Poodle. Standard Poodles love water, so swimming is always an excellent way to exercise. A full coat can weigh your dog down, so if your Poodle loves to swim, you might consider giving him a shorter haircut like a kennel cut or summer clip. Manage Stress To keep your puppy stress-free, expose him to as many new situations, people, and dogs as possible during his early years to become well-socialized. It can take these dogs a whole year to reach their full height and even longer to reach their fully grown weight. Trying to get your dog to grow more quickly by feeding him more or exercising him intensely to build body mass is a dangerous process that could lead to the opposite effect. Even once your dog has reached his full height at a year, it will still take him another year to fill out to his final adult size. When do Standard Poodles stop growing? At a year old, your Poodle should have reached its total height, or at the very least be very close to it. There will not be much height growth after this milestone. Your dog will start adding body mass and strengthening the joints to handle the weight. A Standard Poodle should have matured and calmed down by the month milestone; however, this depends on the owner and how they have interacted and trained him in his foundation months. An untrained Standard Poodle can keep their momentum going until the age of 4 or 5 years. Do Poodle types have different growth rates? Yes, Standard Poodles are much slower to grow than other Poodles. These dogs are not small, and their bones and joints have much more growing to do. Miniature or toy breeds will reach their adult size quicker than bigger dogs. Miniature and Toy Poodles will already look the size of an adult dog by around six months old. What if my dog is overweight or underweight? Standard Poodles are full of high energy and fast metabolism. It can be challenging to tell if your dog is overweight, mainly if he is very fluffy. You should use your hands to check your dog to see if he is overweight regularly. You should easily be able to feel his ribs under his skin. You can also cut out all treats and increase his daily exercise. Making these small lifestyle changes can quickly help your dog lose that extra weight. For Poodle breeds, underweight dogs are very common, though. You could also increase portion size or opt for high-quality food with higher fat content, although this should be done under the professional guidance of a trained veterinarian. With more information about Standard Poodle puppies, their height, and their weight now in hand, you can begin measuring your pup. The food you give your dog and his exercise regime also has a big part to play in keeping your dog healthy and growing well. Do you have a Standard Poodle at home? How big is your dog? We would love to know more about him in the comments below. Raised by a bundle of botanists, researchers, and biologists, she is passionate about things related to the animal kingdom, including, our furry friends. However, as a terrible allergy sufferer, she is limited in her pet selection and so has grown up surrounded by curly-haired Poodles. Leave a Comment. The Standard Poodle will grow continuously for the first year of their life, but after turning 1, they will stop growing in height but will fill out in weight. This increase in weight should take about 6 months. By 18 months of age, the Standard Poodle is usually at their maximum weight and height. Smaller breeds tend to grow into their adult size much faster than the larger breeds. The Toy Poodle might gain her mature height and weight as early as 5 to 6 months. However, the average for Miniature and Toy Poodles to physically mature is 7 to 8 months. Mental maturity usually takes a little longer. Of course, some dogs might be adults but will remain puppyish in behavior for their entire lives. Unfortunately, these studies have not yet determined the right age, but it is recommended to wait until your dog has reached full skeletal growth, particularly large breeds, before spaying or neutering. Dangers of Growing Too Quickly or Stunted Growth If you end up overfeeding your puppy, some health concerns can include obesity, hip dysplasia, abnormalities in the skeleton, and osteochondrosis. This will cause pain and difficulty walking as your puppy becomes an adult. Follow the guidelines on the back of the dog food bag for the amount you should feed them over the course of the day. These same rules apply to your Toy and Miniature Poodle puppies. When you settle on the food for your puppy, follow the food bag guidelines for the amount you should feed your puppy every day. Following the charts and creating your own chart to keep track of how they are growing should go a long way to ease any worries you may have. All puppies will have growth spurts and times when it seems to slow down, but this is a normal part of puppy development. Height: Over 15 inches .Utilization: Companion Dog Size: Over 45 cm .The Standard sized Poodle is a rather large dog that can reach an adult weight of pounds .This sized Poodle will be over 15 inches at the shoulder. Add to that a thick, high topknot and you have one big dog! It is this sized dog which was developed first, before the smaller toy or mini. Appearance is the same and size is the only difference. This breed is very elegant and this dog carries itself with confidence and pride. Its body is well proportioned and considered "squarely" built. Most will have dark oval shaped eyes, however amber eyes can sometimes be found with brown, cafe au lait and silver beige dogs. If blue eyes are present, as adults, it is considered to be a fault. The muzzle is long with a slight chiseling under the eyes. The ears are thick with hair technically not fur and hang down close to the face. The tail is customarily docked in countries in which it is legal, including the United States to a medium length. The dog's coat is the feature which stands out the most. A Poodle has hair as opposed to the fur that most dogs have and it is naturally curly and very dense. This striking standard sized Poodle has a corded coat; this is done by hand by a groomer or owner and takes quite a while! Many people mistakenly believe that dogs with hair are hypoallergenic and will not cause any issues with allergy sufferers. However, all dogs produced dander, the element which normally can cause sneezing and other allergy symptoms. The element which makes the Standard Poodle and other sized Poodles seem to be hypoallergenic is the fact that this dog does not shed in the customary sense. The hair does fall out, but not to the floor or furniture. This is one of the reasons that daily brushing is important, as loose, dead hairs left in the coat can produce hard to get out tangles. While the Standard Poodle is known for it's intricate clips the possibilities are endless , the coat can be corded if an owner chooses. This is achieved by not clipping the coat and allowing the hair to grow. After 6 to 15 months, the hair will mat into cords which are then separated and evened out. Learn about coat issues. Colors Standard Poodles may be solid, parti colored a mix of colors or phantom colored. Learn much more about Poodle colors. Care Information Standard Poodles, while very graceful and elegant are large enough to handle long walks and hard play. When they are still puppies, care must be taken of course, to prevent injury from rough play and jumping from heights. Since this breed is prone to tooth decay, dental care at home along with yearly professional care. Even so, it is not uncommon for a senior, old standard to have one or two missing teeth. Proper feeding of wholesome foods for both main meals and snacks will help to ensure a happy and healthy dog and that is able to reach his expected life span of 10 to 14 years. Temperament This breed is known for its intelligence in the top 5 most intelligent and generally does very well with house training and command training. This breed can work well as a watchdog by alerting you to the presence of unwanted visitors on the property with its sharp bark. The Poodle is not however, known for being overly aggressive or having biting issues. Standard Poodles usually get along very well with children, however size issues may come into play. Very young puppies are small enough to be injured if not handled properly young young kids. And at the same time they grow quickly and and 18 month old Standard will be much larger than little toddlers which means the dog will need to be careful around the young child. Loyal, emotional and eager to be included in everything, this breed is a great companion for any sized family looking for a large sized pet. Health Issues Even though the toy, miniature and standard Poodles are considered the same dog breed, they do have different health issues. The standard size is more prone to Epilepsy, hypothyroidsim, hip dsyplasia, Sebaceous Adenitis, luxating patella, bloat, Addison's disease, von Willebrand's disease and PRA. It comes in three different sizes: Standard, Miniature, and Toy. They all have similar characteristics, with some key differences. One of the reasons people love the poodle is its coat. Poodles rarely shed, making them the perfect choice for people who typically suffer from allergies to dog dander. Poodles can also be a lot of fun to groom. Their curly hair can be trimmed and poofed into all sorts of fancy clips, making this breed the true fashion icon of dogs. Indeed, the Standard Poodle began as a retrieving water dog more than years ago. Its coat protected it against the elements and give it a free range of movement in the water. Today, the poodle is a highly versatile breed that can be trained to do just about anything. Athletic, agile, smart, and eager to please their owners, they make natural entertainers, retrievers, good hunters, helpful therapy dogs, and even superb watchdogs. Without enough activity, though, they may get bored, so daily exercise and mental stimulation are critical for their overall health and good behavior. A Standard Poodle, when first born, will weigh only a few ounces to a pound and be less than 10 inches high at the shoulder. She should eat between three to four meals a day of high-quality puppy food, and weigh between 10 and 20 pounds. Males are usually bigger than females. Housetraining should be well underway, along with leash training. This is when her wispy puppy hairs will be replaced with her more adult, thicker hair. She will be leaving the puppy stage and entering the adolescent stage. Consistent obedience training with positive enforcement will be key during this time to help her grow into an enjoyable companion. By five months your Standard Poodle will be large—males will weigh between 32 and 40 pounds and females between 26 and 30 pounds, so she will likely be more of a handful. By six months, your dog will be larger than small- and medium-sized dogs of other breeds. Avoid those foods with meat by-products, chemical preservatives, and a lot of artificial dyes and flavors. Choose instead those with fewer ingredients that you can pronounce and understand and that are nutritionally balanced for a large dog. This is easier on his digestive system and helps keep his blood sugar in balance. When your dog reaches the one-year mark, you can back off to twice a day and choose an adult rather than a puppy food. Follow the suggested feeding guidelines, and check with your veterinarian if you notice any issues. Poodles do well on dry food, but you can also combine wet and dry if you like to add some extra taste and moisture. Dry kibble is also easier on the stomach and intestines. An all-wet-food diet can lead to runny stools. Just be careful what you feed your four-legged pal, as the wrong foods can mess up his stomach and lead to overweight. Choose baked or dry dog treats for snacks, and save the moist or chewy ones for training rewards. A dog water fountain can help keep the water fresh-tasting while filtering out bacteria. As your dog grows, keep an eye on his weight. Overweight and obesity in puppies can lead to health problems later in life. A good rule of thumb is to feed puppy-specific foods until your pup reaches full growth, which is usually around 12 months of age. Due to their full coats, Poodles can put on excess weight without you realizing it. Check by examining the ribs and waist. You should be able to easily feel but not see the ribs and note a well-proportioned waist when looking at your dog from the top. After a year, she may continue to gain a little weight as she fills out, but her height will stay about the same. To estimate about how big your Poodle will get, you can try a few things. If you bought the dog from a breeder, ask for information about the mother and father and their weight and height, as your dog will likely grow to a similar size. As with many other animals, males are typically larger than females. Poodles are considered fully growth adults at two years old. This is when they have finished filling out and also when they will show signs of emotional maturity. Before that, though, by the age of one year, your dog will have reached his final height or very close to it. After that, the growth will be focused on filling out muscle and cementing final bone formation. The AKC calls for Standard Poodles to be taller than 15 inches and weight pounds females or pounds males. Most adult dogs reach a height at the withers of inches. Size genetics can vary quite a bit and even within puppies of one litter there could be big differences in adult size. Of course, you should never choose a dog based on looks alone — whether those are colors like the Parti Poodle or certain size requirements. However, if you want a specifically small dog, a female is more likely to fit the bill. On the other hand, if you want a large dog, pick a male. Is a Standard Poodle a large breed dog? Yes, Standard Poodles are large dogs. Standard Poodles will require daily exercise and stimulation like every dog breed. They are very handler-focused and love to be with their people. How big is a small Standard Poodle? In reality finding a Standard Poodle who is just above this height would be highly unusual. Small females are closer to inches tall. If you are looking for a specifically small Poodle, going with a Toy or Miniature Poodle might be your best bet. Do big Standard Poodles require more care? Every dog is going to require daily care, exercise and enrichment, regardless of their size. Unleash the real potential of your companion! Poodles are goofy, social, fun-loving, intelligent, highly-trainable, and desire human companionship. It is thought that the Poodle originated in Germany as far back as the Middle ages. Taking its name from the German word pudeln, which means "to splash in water". The Poodle was once exceptional at retrieving ducks from the marshes. The versatile Poodle is among the most intelligent and capable of breeds. It is easily trained and remains a popular family pet to this day. Our Poodles are all from Standard lines and are regal and calm, though they love to play. They bark to alert when someone arrives at the house, but are not barkers without purpose. Standard Poodles love to be near their family and are wonderful with other dogs and children. We produce solids, parti-factor or abstract, as well as Parti Standard Poodle Puppies! Our Parti Standard Poodle Puppies range from red and white, apricot and white, brown and white, black and white, and sable parti puppies. Our Poodle Dams and Sires are AKC Registered from excellent bloodlines and have obtained extensive health clearances prior to being bred. All three varieties have the same build and proportions. We do not currently offer miniature or toy puppies. Poodles can be black, red, white, apricot, brown, cream, Cafe Au Lait, silver beige, silver or blue, and may be a combination of these colors. Poodles carry the color patterns brindle, sable, ticking, abstract, tuxedo, parti, and phantom. They require brushing a few times a week, plus clipping and shaping every months. This longer clip though does require more frequent brushing at home to prevent matting of the Poodles curly coat. According to Slate Magazine, Poodles were originally used as foul hunting dogs. An unshorn Poodle's thick coat could weigh it down in the water. With the bottom half of its body shaved, the animal was more buoyant and could swim more freely. The long mane and hair around the chest were left intact to keep the poodle's vital organs warm in the cold water, and owners also kept the hair around the joints to protect them from cold and injury and to help prevent rheumatism. Shaving the hair around the face left the poodle's mouth and eyes free so it could fulfill its retrieving responsibilities, and tying the hair on a poodle's head into a "top knot" also kept hair out of its eyes. Owners eventually tied these knots with brightly colored ribbons to help them identify their dogs from afar. Daily walks are a must if you don't have a safely enclosed area for them to run freely. They love games and many are attracted to water and love to swim. As with any dog, socialization and training should start while the dog is still a puppy and continue throughout its life. Look for a puppy kindergarten class locally or join the AKC S. Puppy Program , training based on positive techniques. Find a class here. This is a great place to start socializing and training. A well-socialized, well-trained Poodle makes a wonderful family companion. For example, nylon is chew-proof, durable, non-stretchable, and affordable but it may begin to smell foul after some time. Although the collars with a mix of nylon and neoprene padding are good as everyday collars due to being sensitive and durable. The last and most popular material used to make dog collars is leather. The only problem is that the leather dog collars usually come with super-hefty price tags. Mostly, the german shepherds have thick necks and narrow heads so you better measure both the neck and head size to find the perfect fit. Also, you should know how tight should a dog collar be because if the collar is too tight, it will choke your pet whereas if the collar is too loose, your dog might pick it up and rip it apart or slip out of it. Style Factors like style and design need to consider and prefer only when your dog is fully trained. Since german shepherds have a pleasant mix of golden, grey, and black strands, spotting them in woods might get difficult — both day and night. Therefore, it would be great if you get a collar in vibrant collars for daytime use and a reflective collar for the night. Due to their aggressive and over-protective nature, some people possess a negative image of german shepherds in their minds. Remember that german shepherds are super intelligent when it comes to understanding and learning the commands so you should never be too harsh on them during training. Instead, just give them some time and a comfortable collar so they can focus fully on the training rather than discomfort. Durability As mentioned before, the factors like style and design should only be preferred if your dog is fully trained. Generally, the collars with double stitching and high-density webbing are considered lasting. Whereas, dual buckle strap closures are considered more secure than quick-release, single buckles. All you need to do is to look around for such a sturdy yet stylish collar. Generally, the neck size of an adult german shepherd is around cm inches. This will keep your dog comfortable, away from potential choking hazards. Most of the time, NO! However, if you still think your dog has grown up into a stubborn, bad boy, you can go with the harder options of choke and prong collars but only after the consultation of a professional dog trainer. It depends upon whether your dog is trained or not. For example, if your german shepherd is prone to pull the leash or bark excessively, or escape, you should keep the collar on all the time. The collar will not only help you attain better control over your pooch but the engraved buckle will make it easier for others to find your lost dog. Shock collars or e collars because they induce pain which might frighten your dog, making him more aggressive and anxious. Even though you know the correct way of placing a prong collar , make your dog wear it only for a few minutes a day. We hope that this article has made it easier to find the best collar for a german shepherd. If you find somewhere stuck or confused, feel free to contact us, with your query, in the comment section! There are plenty of options available for this breed. What Size Collar for German Shepherds? German Shepherd Temperament German Shepherds are popular as pets for a reason. Many German Shepherds also come from different genetic lines, with dogs from working lines that have high-drive temperaments, while others come from show lines that are more soft-tempered. While both of those types of Shepherds can be skittish and even aggressive at times, their high intelligence and trainability have allowed more generalized breeders to breed dogs with soft and calm temperaments. There are plenty of options available—including leather, nylon, and martingale. Leather Collars for German Shepherds Calmer and more obedient German Shepherds will benefit from a leather collar, which can provide a combination of durability and comfort. Also, for German Shepherds with super sensitive skin, leather collars are the best option. Nylon Collars for German Shepherds German Shepherds that are calm and have a good temperament will also benefit from a nylon collar. Martingale Collars for German Shepherds Martingale collars are clinching collars that tighten when the leash is pulled by the dog or the owner. If your dog likes to pull or slip out of collars, you can find martingale collars that keep the dog comfortable while giving you more control. Regardless of the size or temperament of your German Shepherd, our selection has what you need to balance control and comfort. The sad truth is that many pet store purchased pups actually come from puppy mills. Basically, there is zero authenticity with pet stores. When it comes to adopting any animal from a pet store, there is an increased risk of unforeseen health or genetic problems. You also cultivate a life-long relationship with the breeder, meaning support is available to you anytime you may need it. With My Golden Retriever Puppies , you have the option to come and visit both the puppy and the breeder in person! Golden Retrievers are an adaptable breed, meaning they are better at adapting to seasonal changes and various types of climate than certain other breeds. Goldens sport a double-coat, which ensures that these sweet pups are able to tolerate slightly colder temperatures than their friends from other breeds. Your pup deserves better than that, which is why here at My Golden Retriever Puppies , we ensure high-quality care is taken of your pet at all times. We even have all types of golden retrievers for sale! At My Golden Retriever Puppies, we pride ourselves on our golden retriever price being fair and affordable for high quality puppies. However, if you want to meet a breeder, contact them to meet at a different location. Breeders will typically offer private visits at their home to meet puppies. Visit our puppies page to find a puppy to meet. Our home office is located in Ohio, but we understand that long-distance travel can be inconvenient. If you prefer to meet a breeder in person, they may be able to offer private visits at their home. Of course! Here at My Golden Retriever Puppies , we value family and authenticity, which is why we always guarantee our pups through our 2-year genetic health guarantee. Like adopting a Golden Retriever from a pet store, there is an increased risk when adopting a pup from a rescue center or shelter as well. For example, pups purchased through a shelter or rescue center are far less likely to come with the kinds of health guarantees and reassurances that a breeder can provide. We operate out of the Omaha-Lincoln, Nebraska area. Our focus is to save German Shepherd dogs at risk of being euthanized in shelters or other dire situations. We also help Australian Cattle Dogs and other herding breeds and mixes in need, as much as we are able to. Many are sick or injured. And these adorable, forgotten pups couldn't be more needy or deserving of our compassion and help. You can help too by opening your heart and fostering, adopting or donating. Our Mission is to rescue, rehabilitate, and place the dogs we rescue in permanent, loving homes. German Shepherds are highly intelligent, yet sensitive and intuitive dogs. We firmly believe that they respond best to positive reinforcement and a firm but always kind hand. German Shepherds thrive on structure, consistency, and mutual respect. They respond very well to reward-based training treats, praise. Being heavy-handed, rough, or using force or inappropriate training tools is not only unkind, but it can often lead to distrust and can result in behavioral issues. We do not have a shelter facility. The dogs we rescue stay with our volunteer foster families until the time of their adoption. We provide necessary veterinary care, appropriate nutrition, love, training and socialization to ready our dogs for their forever home. Our greatest need is for foster families. Our ability to save a dog's life is most often determined by whether we have an open foster home for that dog to go in. There are many ways that you can help. We always need volunteers to help transport, process applications, and do home visits. Cannot foster or volunteer? Donations are much appreciated! Adoption fees do not begin to cover the foster dogs' expenses, which include dog food, preventative, vetting, boarding, and in many cases high-cost medical bills. Many of the dogs we help, arrive with no prior vetting whatsoever, and are sick or injured, which can be very costly to a small, all-volunteer rescue like ours. We are very thankful for our supporters' generosity, as we rely on fundraisers and donations to continue helping dogs in need! Your donation is tax deductible. If you would like a receipt for your donation, please let us know. Donations of any amount are greatly appreciated and allow us to save more dogs. Highlighted Events. Historically, they were used in. The German Shepherd is one of the most versatile, well-recognized, and popular dog breeds in the world. The modern German Shepherd is descended from a family of various German herding dogs. Breed standards were not developed until the late 19th century when Captain Max von Stephanitz, a German cavalry officer, worked with Arthur Meyer and other breeders to develop the ideal German herding dog. Stephanitz and Meyer wrote the breed standard in and the American Kennel Club recognized the German Shepherd as a member of the Herding Group in .Although they were originally bred as herding dogs, they were also bred for versatility, which made the German Shepherd an all-around working dog that could excel in a variety of applications. German Shepherds are one of the common dog breeds employed in K-9 units in both police and military applications. They also make great service dogs and, of course, are still awesome herding dogs and farm dogs! The German Shepherd is a strong-willed and highly intelligent dog. They have a playful, energetic spirit and tend to get along with children, other dogs, and other pets, which makes them a great family companion. A born protector, the German Shepherd will provide a great sense of security for their family while their loving and lively personality will make them fit right in as a companion. German Shepherds are naturally protective and can be wary of strangers at first. A well-socialized German Shepherd will bark to alert you and tends to warm up to strangers once introduced. German Shepherds are dogs that were bred to herd and work. This, plus their high energy, makes them a better fit for homes with fenced yards where they can run. They can adapt well to larger apartments as long as plenty of time is dedicated to ensuring they get enough exercise, mental stimulation, and attention every day. A bored, ignored, or under-exercised German Shepherd can often become a destructive one. They also can be sensitive to their surroundings and large gatherings can be off-putting. With a longer coat, they tend to prefer cooler climates and are sensitive to heat. The German Shepherd is a generally healthy breed, but there are some potential health concerns and good breeding practices make a big difference. Potential health concerns to be aware of in a German Shepherd include hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia , and degenerative myelopathy. Reputable breeders will screen their dogs to avoid passing preventable issues to puppies. So, make sure you are asking about the health and genetic history of both parents. You can also ask about any health tests or clearances that have been done. As a barrel-chested breed, the German Shepherd is also at risk for bloat. While the German Shepherd is highly intelligent and highly trainable, they are generally not recommended for novice owners. If you are a novice dog owner, enroll in puppy training classes or enlist the help of a professional dog trainer; not just for your dog, but for yourself as well. Training assistance will help you grow in experience and build a strong bond between you and your German Shepherd puppy, which is essential. Also, the GSD has a thirst for training and fulfillment. They get bored easily and especially with repetition, so continued training with your German Shepherd throughout their life will be necessary. German Shepherds have a medium-to-long double coat. They will shed year-round and heavier as seasons change. Brushing a few times a week is usually sufficient; brushing daily is even better and your GSD will likely love you for it. Bathing is occasional on an as-needed basis. Ear checks weekly with careful cleanings as needed can help prevent ear infections. German Shepherds are high-energy working dogs. Not only do they require a lot of daily activity, but they also are a herding breed that was made to run, guard, and observe, so they need a job to do to be happy and healthy. Daily walks plus playtime, time to run, and other activities are usually enough for a GSD, but they will likely be up for more activity if you are. With their versatility and athleticism, you can try a lot of different activities when puppies finish growing and they are cleared for higher-impact things. A fully-grown German Shepherd usually stands inches tall and weighs pounds. German Shepherds generally live for years on average. Corporal Duncan brought him back to the United States and Rin-Tin-Tin became one of the most famous dog actors in history. Featured German Shepherd Article. At their best, Labradoodles are intelligent, friendly, and affectionate. They come in three sizes: miniature weighing 15 to 30 pounds , medium 30 to 45 pounds , and standard 45 to more than pounds. Because they are a crossbreed their traits are not fixed, so there is no guarantee that the Labradoodle puppy you purchase will fall into the desired weight range. Labradoodles have a moderate activity level. Larger Labradoodles may be more active than their smaller kin. They can also be excellent therapy dogs. Both of the breeds used to create Labradoodles tend to be smart and learn quickly. If you begin socialization and training early and use positive reinforcement techniques such as praise, play, and food rewards, you will be rewarded with a wonderful companion. Their large size gives them the sturdiness to withstand roughhousing with little children. Their endearing temperament makes them the perfect addition to any family. They are also a very hearty dog, being a hybrid. They can live for years on average. Poodles have a reputation for being hypoallergenic, meaning that they can be tolerated by people who have allergies to dogs. Because they have the Poodle in their heritage, Labradoodles are sometimes promoted as being hypoallergenic. But allergies are not caused by a particular dog coat type but by dander. Some people with mild allergies react less severely to particular dogs like the Labradoodle.

Perhaps the easiest way to teach your puppy bite inhibition is to allow him to interact with siblings. During play, if one puppy bites the other, the one who was bitten will walk yelp and end the play. That way, your puppy will learn that biting will spoil the fun. In addition, when his playmates bite him, he also gets to learn that nipping hurts. After all, Bulldog puppy teeth can be sharp. This discovery will teach your puppy to stop biting or to bite with moderation. Later on, he will stop completely. This is why it is advisable to adopt a dog after 8 weeks, since they have spent enough time with their litter to know basic socialization. If Teething Causes Him to Bite, Provide Teething Toys Puppies tend to mouth almost anything they come across because that is how they learn new things. Additionally, young pups also experience teething. This is when the gums begin to hurt. Pups are often born without teeth. Their teeth show up at 2 to 8 weeks, while their adult teeth show up at 4 to 7 months. So, during teething, they may want to chew on things to ease their pain. In that case, offer your Bulldog puppy suitable toys. They can include puzzle toys filled with delicious treats such as peanut butter. Once he has a toy to play with and chew on, he will be less interested in biting you or his siblings. You will be well on your way to ending all the biting you have had to deal with. Be sure to carry biting toys with you everywhere so that they are always available during playtime when your bulldog puppy is restless. They do bite sometimes when playing. He will soon learn that biting you causes playtime to come to stop. In addition, he will understand that you do not like it when he bites you. Allow your Bulldog puppy to remain seated before you continue with playtime. Each time your puppy bites, repeat the same reaction until he no longer bites. Briefly ending playtime is one sure way to ensure that he stops any unwanted behavior such as biting because he will want to continue interacting with everyone. Bulldogs are known to be loyal and loving to their human parents. If your Bulldog puppy likes to chew on bedding or shoes, a bitter spray will stop this behavior. You can easily find such a spray at your local pet store. This spray is unpleasant to the taste but will not cause harm to your bulldog puppy. Supervise Your Bulldog Puppy Around Other Pets and People Biting will only come to an end if you apply measures such as supervising your pet when around other pets. Although your pup may learn not to bite you, there is no guarantee he will remain well behaved around other pets. Biting is unacceptable behavior and socialization makes a lot of sense because it will help your puppy behave around other animals. With good supervision every time, you will keep an eye on everything your puppy does when with other pets. Supervision allows you to discourage your pet from biting cats and other dogs. Try to keep all interaction positive. Do not allow his favorite toys around the areas he is playing with other pets. He might become jealous when he sees other plays with his toys. When other people visit or spend time with your puppy, let them know the rules so they can react properly in the face of puppy biting. Final Word Bulldog puppies are cute little pets. We feel the same way even when they chew, nibble or bite. However, if you allow him to bite others all the time, it might become a habit that he will carry into adulthood. This behavior needs to be checked while your pet is still young. If you are a pet parent who is wondering, when will my English bulldog puppy stop biting, the best thing to do is use the tips we have listed so that biting can end as soon as possible. How to Teach Your English Bulldog Puppy to Not Bite Every English bulldog goes through the puppy stage and learns to interact with others by biting, nipping, and licking. Biting occurs when your puppy is growing and exploring their environment. Your English bulldog puppy may not hurt you intentionally, but as a puppy he is still capable of inflicting harm to you. If this behavior is not rectified and controlled, your puppy can carry this into adulthood. No, And Here's Why! Your puppy might grow up thinking that there is nothing wrong in biting and nipping humans. As their teeth grow and their weight also increases, the harmless biting which you once found cute can turn into rough bites and play. An English bulldog is not aggressive by nature but like other dogs can show aggression if provoked. They are ferociously protective of their owners and others in the family. If they feel their owner or loved ones are threatened, they can turn defensive and show signs of belligerence. English bulldogs are calm and gentle with their owners but are chary of other dogs and strangers. Therefore, it is imperative to socialize your bulldog properly and make them feel safe around other dogs and people. There are chances that if your English bulldog is inadequately socialized, he will react fiercely to what he sees to be a threat to your safety or their own. Bulldog Teething and Biting When your English bulldog puppy is 3 to 6 months old, there are chances that your puppy may be teething. At this time your puppy will put virtually everything in his mouth. They do this because they need something to chew on, to alleviate the pain and discomfort. You can give him ice cubes to numb his gums and mitigate the pain. When your puppy is teething, you can also give him things he can chew on. You can give him old washed rags kept in the freezer, hard rubber balls, or nylon bones. When your puppy bites you hard just yell as loudly as you can and pretend to be hurt. This will startle your puppy and ensure that he releases pressure. You must continue this until your puppy starts refraining from nipping and biting. This way your puppy will learn that biting can be a hazard to their friends and humans. They will learn that skin is sensitive and should be only pressed down lightly. Eventually your puppy will become gentler to you during their playtime. When your puppy bites you stop playing with him. Avoid petting, talking and even looking at your puppy. Never show aggression or give physical punishment to the puppy while training him. He will become defensive and grow up to be more aggressive. Remember to praise your puppy for good behavior. Socialize your English bulldog puppy to be more comfortable around strangers also. Socializing will help stop your puppy biting your feet and the feet of visitors. You can walk your puppy to dog parks and public places. You can also visit your family and friends with your English bulldog puppy to help him develop trust with them. English bulldog puppies easily get excited with movements. So, if your puppy sees you moving your feet or any sudden movement, he will swoop into attack. Stop right there and this will make your puppy settle down. When puppies see children running around, they also want to run and play with everybody else and could bite their feet. Use dog commands like Sit, Stay, and Down. Always keep treats in handy while training your puppy to motivate him. If this does not work, then simply walk away. To discipline your adult bulldog, you must leave him alone. Still, if your dog persists to bite, you can seek professional help to curb his habit of biting and nipping. Lastly, do not try to put your adult English bulldog into situations he is not very comfortable in or those which will provoke him. If you know your dog does not like other dogs, keep him away from those dogs. You can also use a spray bottle to spray something with a bitter taste into their mouth when your bulldog bites. I have seen people use lemon juice. Be aware that excessive lemon juice will cause an upset stomach and possibly diarrhea for dogs, so find something else with a bitter taste that is safe for dogs to teach them a negative consequence for biting. The bite force of the English bulldog is pounds per square inch psi. Psi shows us how much pressure is exerted on one square inch of space. This is enough to cut muscles and break bones. English bulldogs have extremely strong jaws and muscular and sturdy bodies. English bulldogs also have a very low center of gravity and can easily take you down. They were bred specially to fight the bulls. Their powerful jaws can cause a lot of damage. With appropriate training and by acting properly around your puppy, you can help him grow out of his habit of biting. Training your adult English bulldog will take some time. Training an adult English bulldog will be relatively difficult, but it is not impossible. So, be patient and try to build up this new behavior with trust and love. Persistence and hard work will go a long way. You will surely see results and all your efforts will yield a very obedient and loving companion for life. Pup pup hooray! Post Views: 2, Or chew on furniture? Although known for their sedate behavior, bulldogs can sometimes have a tendency to bite people, especially strangers. This aggressive behavior can be curbed. If you want to stop this show of aggression, it is essential to understand why they are doing it in the first place. Why do bulldogs bite? All bulldogs go through a biting phase when they are puppies due to teething pain. Eventually, bulldogs grow out of this phase. If a bulldog does not stop biting by 12 months of age, it usually reflects a lack of training or signs of owner protection or jealousy. Photo by The Bulldog Blog How to get bulldogs to stop biting? Here are some reasons why your bulldog might be biting people: 1. Lack of training: If you have recently welcomed an English bulldog to your home, especially one that might be older, they might not have the training yet to not bite, or know that it is a bad behavior. Owner protection: English bulldogs are fiercely protective of their owners. When they detect any threat, they often bite. Jealousy: English bulldogs often crave the attention of their owners. And, if they are unable to get that attention, they might attack whatever object or person is detracting your attention from them, which can be another person or a dog. Now that you know what is causing your bulldog to bite and act out, here are 14 guaranteed strategies to help reduce this behavior: 14 confirmed strategies that will stop English bulldogs from biting In this post, we will discuss not one or two, but 14 verified strategies that can help you prevent your English bulldog from biting. They might not all work for you, but we hope that some of these strategies will be helpful in nipping this behavior in the bud. And the best way to show them that you are upset or displeased by their behavior is to yell at them. Use a stern voice and be forceful. While this strategy might not produce results in the first or second attempt, your bulldog will slowly understand after a few scoldings. Use a squirt bottle A quick squirt in the face whenever your bulldog starts to bite should quickly reduce this bad behavior. Walk Away Bulldogs, like children, can crave attention. And sometimes it can be effective to deny them that attention and just walk away. They will learn to soon associate that bad behavior with you walking away, and stop doing it. Work on socializing your dog One of the reasons why English bulldogs bite is because they are not familiar with the people or dogs that they are snapping at. So, to decrease that anxiety, start introducing your bulldog to other people, children, and animals early on. Socializing them with other dogs and people will help them better identify threats as well. Neuter your dog You might be thinking, how can neutering stop your dog from biting people? Neutered dogs are less aggressive, that is why the probability that they will bite someone or another dog is on the lower side. Be sure to check with your vet on the right time is to neuter your dog. Curb the habit when they are young One of the best ways to prevent your English bulldog from biting is to curb this behavior when they are young. And while it might be cute at the beginning when puppies bite and snap, you should learn to shut down this behavior early on, so that it does not grow into a bad habit. Showing that when they bite you, you get hurt, will help them understand that biting is a strict no-no. In these cases, giving them something else to chew on can be helpful. As a result, there will be no need for the dog to bite or chew on anything else. Help your dog expend energy Sometimes bulldogs might exhibit aggressive behavior because they have pent up energy that they are trying to release. When you play with your dog or take your dog outdoors frequently, it becomes easy for the dog to expend energy and will likely lead to them being less aggressive. Whenever the dog is unhappy or afraid due to someone invading its territory, the likelihood of a bite is on the higher side. You have to look out for body language. If you notice these signs, it is better to give your dog some space, and separate them from any strangers, human or otherwise. It is also helpful to talk to them sweetly and try and alleviate those fears by comforting them. Show your dog who is boss At the end of the day, you are the pack leader, and your dog needs to know that. When your bulldog recognizes that you are the alpha dog in this relationship, he or she will respect you better and will follow your rules. Sometimes the best way to do this is to isolate them for a short time, to show them your displeasure. This is only effective if it is done immediately after the wrong behavior, so that they associate that behavior with this punishment. Opt for professional training Another way is to opt for professional obedience training. But, we do recommend that owners attend some of these classes, as you might learn some tricks as well! Consult a vet If your dog is persistently aggressive, and is not showing signs of improvement, you might consider taking them to the vet. Aggression is a symptom of a lot of diseases and ailments that your English bulldog could be suffering from. Be patient Training takes time, and you need to give your dog and yourself the benefit of the doubt. You have to let your dog absorb things and understand what behaviors are good and what are bad.
