We are dedicated to a quality-breeding program that has allowed us the opportunity to develop international relationships with some of the top kennels worldwide! All of our dogs live in loving homes… NONE live in a kennel. Our guardian program is an integral part of our breeding program. It is imperative to our belief that every one of our dogs should be in their own loving home where they receive one on one attention, love, training and proper every day care. Our dogs get the best of two families ours and their guardian families! We do not breed Golden Doodles. Several years ago we began developing our Australian Doodle program. We have strong ties to various agencies that help place service dogs with families and individuals with needs. That is the main reason we began a breeding program with Australian Labradoodles. Australian Labradoodles were originally bred to be hypoallergenic service dogs. Several of our guardian dogs have been professionally trained and are registered service dogs for the families that they live with. Our babies are all across the United States. Sammamish, Issaquah, Bend and many more cities and states around the US. Our dogs are smart, calm, intuitive, and beautiful. We only breed one litter at a time. Together we discover that there is nothing more rewarding than making people happy with healthy, social and gorgeous puppies. They have soft coats and wonderful temperaments. We breed carefully with low inbreeding and provide you with a pedigree. Our breeding dogs pass many tests to qualify for our breeding program. Tests on breeding dogs include hip and elbow xrays, cardiac screening, healthy eye certification, and DNA tests for common diseases in the breed. We take special care of all our dogs and puppies. We love our Australian Labradoodle puppies from start to finish! We do not breed with anxious, aggressive, nervous dogs, but we select our breeding dogs with good temperaments. They have a gentle, calm, happy character with just enough spirit to be playful and fun. We raise our breeding dogs in our own home or in foster families called guardian homes. All dogs deserve to live with a family. We are not a kennel operation. Because the puppies grow up in our home, they are socialized and love people and other dogs. They are introduced to people, children, and other dogs at a very early age. Training with commands such as come and sit start at 5 weeks of age. We introduce them to their crates at the same time. Our labradoodles keep us laughing with their clownlike antics. We have a lot of experience and knowledge raising and training dogs and we promise a lifetime of support. We distinguish ourselves by having the healthiest, friendliest dogs with wonderful temperaments. They are mostly hypoallergenic dogs. They are very intelligent and easy to train, so Australian Labradoodles are used for emotional support and service. Our whelping boxes and pens are cleaned and sanitized every day. The puppies start pottying on grass outside at about 5 weeks old. They are introduced to crates at 5 weeks old but will not be fully crate trained. We want them to love their crates. We send one home with you. Reserve early as most puppies are sold before they are born! Responsible Breeding Early Socialization and Positive Training Starts at Birth Responsible Breeding Inbreeding analysis before breeding any dogs to be sure there are no close relatives for generations. Pedigrees, and health tests posted. Our breeding dogs do not shed. Tests on breeding dogs include hip and elbow xrays, cardiac screening, healthy eye certification, DNA tests for Common diseases in the breed. We socialize with many people and other dogs. We introduce crate training at 5 weeks in a manner that they will love their crates. Love and handling starts at birth. Most puppies come and sit before they go home. Olympic Peninsula:. Ethical breeders only breed new litters from carefully health screened parent pups. This helps detect any genetic defects , which might be carried onto the puppies. This will give you some added peace of mind, but make sure that the health guarantee comes in written form with your adoption documents. Although it might seem like an unnecessary step, being affiliated with any of these organizations means that a breeder has to follow their strict health testing standards and ethical breeding practices. Moreover, if you know anyone who has adopted a Labradoodle puppy in Washington, reach out to them and ask about their own personal experiences with Doodle breeders in the state. Our article on How To Choose A Responsible Breeder has tons of more tips on this topic, so make sure you check it out. They specialize in breeding Medium, Mini, and Micro Mini Australian Labradoodle puppies in a variety of beautiful coat colors, including chocolate, red-apricot, caramel, and phantom patterns. In addition to breeding Labradoodle pups, they also raise purebred Golden Retrievers. At Moonlit Acres, their main focus is on breeding healthy and happy puppies with wonderful temperaments. In fact, many of their puppies have gone on to become registered service dogs for families and individuals who need that special canine support only Doods can provide. All of their puppies are born and raised in their very own home so that they all receive round-the-clock care and nurture that they deserve. Their puppies are all well-socialized with young children, adults, and also with other dogs. They start potty training at 3 weeks of age, crate training at 4 weeks of age, and also utilize the Early Neurological Stimulation ENS training. Moreover, they teach their puppies basic commands and even take them on car rides! What Makes This Breeder Unique? Waitlist: Yes. Breeders ofMulti-generational Australian Labradoodles Australian Labradoodles are such a wonderful, versatile breed. They are adaptable, affectionate, eager to please, friendly, intelligent, sensitive and very trainable. They are good for the laid back person to the active family, as long as they are with their people they are happy and content. They have non-shedding coats that are allergy friendly! Our objective is to breed healthy, well-tempered, and beautiful Australian Labradoodles. To achieve our objectives, we subject our breeding dogs to rigorous health and temperament testing, we expose our pups to enriching experiences appropriate to their age. We use temperament testing to match pups to families to support the best fit of pup to lifestyle. Our breeding dogs are loved family pets and our pups are raised in our home or with one of our amazing guardian families. We are not a kennel! We are a registered breeder with the Worldwide Australian Labradoodle Association WALA and operate in a manner that respects the highest ethical and professional standards. I am a small breeder of Australian Labradoodles. I breed for health, temperament and conformation. I health test all our breeding dogs and only breed dogs who pass all the required genetic testing. Health testing is only part of what we do. Providing families with puppies with great temperaments is extremely important to us. Temperament is both nature and nurture. Here at Rainier labradoodles we make sure we breed dogs with great temperaments. We also spend a lot of time socializing and providing enriching experiences to the puppies from the time they are born. Currently we use a curriculum called Puppy Culture. It is important for us to know that when our puppies leave us they go to wonderful families, who in fact are committed to being their forever families. We love our Australian Labradoodles adult dogs and their puppies, they are members of our family. This is one of the reasons we provide lifetime support. Please know that all our labradoodles live either with us or in guardian homes with loving families. I currently plan 2 to 4 litters a year and take only a few reservations. We will need guardian homes every year. If you are interested in becoming a Guardian Home, check out the Guardian Home page.

Life Span Did You Know? The Boxador is a designer mixed dog breed that is a cross between a Boxer and a Labrador Retriever. They are sometimes also called a Boxer Lab Mix, although Boxador tends to be a more popular term. Because this is not an established purebred dog, the Boxador is not recognized by the American Kennel Club, but they are still recognized by other official organizations. With mixed breed puppies, you can get any combination of the physical characteristics and character traits of the parent breeds. A Boxador puppy could take completely after their Boxer parent or their Lab parent or could be some combination of both. In general, Boxadors tend to be intelligent, friendly, energetic, and loving. Overall, these dogs tend to make a great addition to a family. Both the Boxer and the Labrador are known for their happy-go-lucky, friendly temperament. They also have a playful spirit and are known for getting along well with children, other dogs, and other pets. In general, the Boxador tends to have a similar temperament. Playtime with small children should be supervised as these dogs will grow into large, energetic dogs and small children can be knocked over by their excitedly wagging tails and energetic play. They tend to be loyal, friendly, and playful and love spending time with their families. Due to the hunting instinct in the parent breeds, a Boxador may have a high prey drive and enjoy chasing things. Boxadors tend to be highly adaptable dogs. They do tend to be a better fit for larger homes with a fenced-in backyard where they can run. However, as long as they receive plenty of exercise, mental stimulation, and attention, they can adapt well to apartment living. As with many dog breeds, they are sensitive to extreme heat and can be sensitive to cold. But, overall, this dog breed does well in just about any climate. They love to be around their families and have a high energy level, so they do not like to be left alone for long periods of time. Mixed dog breeds can inherit some, all, or none of the potential health issues present in their parent breeds. When it comes to the Boxador, they are a relatively healthy breed. Some of the potential health conditions to be aware of include hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, cataracts, and heart conditions. Asking the breeder about the genetic history of the parent breeds and to see any relevant health clearances can help allay potential concerns about health you may have. Both the Boxer and the Lab are highly intelligent dog breeds that are eager to please their owners, which makes them both highly trainable. You can expect your Boxador to be highly trainable as well. These dogs respond well to positive training techniques and are a good fit for owners of any experience level. Although it tends not to be necessary with this breed, enrolling in puppy training and obedience classes is an added bonus and can offer some extra opportunities for socialization. Boxadors usually have a short and dense coat. They will shed moderately year-round and more heavily twice a year as the seasons change. Generally, brushing their coat a few times a week is sufficient. This will help keep your dog more comfortable and will keep some of the loose fur contained to the brush instead of all of around your house. In terms of bathing, these dogs only require the occasional bath or more often as needed if they have gotten dirty or have been swimming. Dental care for dogs is especially important. Both of the parent breeds of this designer dog breed are high-energy, so you should expect your Boxador to have a high energy level as well. In addition to regular daily walks and playtime, your Boxador may enjoy running with you, going for a swim, going hiking with you, and taking trips to the dog park. They also are a good fit for several canine sports like dock diving, agility, and more. Their joints are still developing before this age and can be damaged by strenuous exercise. A fully-grown Boxador will usually stand 20 to 25 inches tall at the shoulder and weigh 55 to 80 pounds. A Boxador generally lives 10 to 14 years. Boxador Puppies for Sale. The Boxer Lab mix is playful, energetic, loyal and loving. Boxador puppies are known for being intelligent and enthusiastic dogs. But their spirited temperament is not right for every family setup. Watch these cute Boxer Lab mix puppies playing! The boxer lab mix, also known as the Boxador, is a hybrid of the Boxer and the Labrador Retriever breeds. Compared to its parent breeds, the Boxador mix itself is very new. But, its parents have long histories living and working alongside humans. Labs originated as working dogs, retrieving game for fishermen in Newfoundland, Canada. When they were first bred in 19th century Germany, Boxers were used as fighting dogs. Boxer Lab Mix Characteristics With cross breeds it is often hard to predict which parent a puppy will resemble. Boxers can weigh up to 80lbs and reach 25 inches tall. Labradors are similarly large. Boxador full grown tend to be between 23 and 25 inches tall and weigh up to 80lbs. Although females are smaller than males. Regardless of the mix of your genes your pup ends up with, your Boxer Lab Mix dog is likely to be a medium to large dog, active, loyal, easy to train and very fond of challenges — of both the physical and mental kind! Boxers are fawn or brindle. Often with white patches. Their offspring can be any mixture of these! The Boxador is usually brindle, and these dogs often have white markings. If you want a black Lab Boxer mix, your puppy will likely still have some white on them. Your best bet is to mix a black Lab with a dark Boxer. But, even a black Lab Boxer mix can have unpredictable coloring, despite the dominant genes for black fur. Do Boxer Lab Mixes Shed? When it comes to coat, the Boxer Lab mix usually takes after its Boxer parent. These pups typically have short, smooth hair that sheds very little and is easy to care for. However if your Boxador dog has more Labrador in its genes you might have to deal with some shedding. Thankfully this is usually seasonal and can be kept in check with regular grooming. Are Boxadors Hypoallergenic? The Boxer Lab mix might have a short coat, but it is likely to be a high shedder at least part of the time. They produce allergens in their dander and saliva, and are not suitable for dog allergy suffering owners. Boxador Temperament The Boxer Lab mix will fall somewhere between its parents. But, luckily, the Labrador and Boxer breeds have quite similar temperaments. Both Boxers and Labradors are very loving and loyal. They think nothing of climbing on their people for a cuddle, despite their large size! Both Boxers and Labradors are usually great with older children. They are considered gentle giants and will eagerly run after little ones. Although they have been known to accidentally bowl over smaller family members in their excitement. Labradors also love playing with canine companions, but Boxers are less reliable in this area. Poorly socialized Boxers can be prone to aggression towards strangers and other dogs. Boxers are instinctive guardians and proud to play the role of family protector. But you can reduce this through thorough socialization during the puppy stages and by meeting the Boxer parent and ensuring that they seem happy and confident around strangers. Even the most friendly breed, like the Labrador, will benefit. Finding them puppy friends to play with will encourage them to be calm and docile with other dogs when fully grown. Attending puppy classes is a great way to do this. But, make sure you also socialize them to unfamiliar people, children, cats, other animals, and more. This will ensure your Boxador dog is as friendly outside the home as he is inside. They require a lot of exercise and enjoy running around with the family or playing a game of fetch. This can result in unwanted behaviors like barking, digging, or chewing. But, be wary of a shorter snout in the Boxador. Boxers suffer from a conformity issue called brachycephaly, which can cause trouble breathing and overheating when exercising. Use positive reward techniques for best results. You could even take your mix to a puppy training class, or attend an online dog training class. Boxador Health and Care Genetic diversity is improved in a cross breed compared with the parent breeds and the coefficient of inbreeding COI is much lower. Put simply, the COI of any mating describes how closely related the parent dogs are. Higher COIs are associated with an increase in health problems. The risk of this happening is lower if the puppies parents are not closely related. There are however, some health issues that are not recessive and can be passed on from just one parent. And there are common ancestors in some of our dog breeds that mean some diseases are present in both breeds. For that reason it is still possible that a cross bred dog could inherit genetic health problems. Labrador Health Labradors are not without their issues. This breed can suffer from hip dysplasia and elbow dysplasia. It can cause lameness and severe arthritic pain. Another issue to be aware of in Labs is eye disease. Retinal dysplasia was first noted in the breed in .Progressive Retinal Atrophy is a degenerative eye disease that is common in Labs. Only buy your puppy from a breeder who health tests the parents for all the potential problems their respective breeds could suffer from. Boxer Health A study found that Boxers are one of the most likely breeds to get cancer. According to Petplan, mast cell tumors are the 5th most common illness in Boxers. This breed is unfortunately also associated with heart disease. Aortic Stenosis is the most common major problem in the breed. The causes are not known but it is genetic and passed along certain bloodlines. ARVC affects males more than females and is most common in dogs older than .Symptoms include coughing, difficulty breathing and weight loss. Boxers can also suffer from Canine Degenerative Myelopathy. This is a neurodegenerative disease that can cause paralysis. Unfortunately more is not necessarily better and brachycephaly causes breathing difficulties and overheating It may be that being the Boxador rather than a purebred Boxer offers some protection against these diseases. It certainly reduces the skull shortening we see in brachycephalic breeds. This is a bit of a two edged coin because while the Boxer physique may benefit from a longer muzzle, the Labrador physique is unlikely to be improved with a shorter one. Reputable breeders will only breed from dogs that have been tested and cleared of these serious hereditary health problems. To give your pup a long and healthy life, make sure he gets plenty of exercise, a balanced diet and regular vet check-ups. Boxador Life Expectancy Labrador Retrievers have a lifespan of years. And, on average, Boxers live around years So in theory you can expect Boxer Labrador mix puppies to reach anywhere between 9 and 12 years old. In practice studies tend to find that crossbred dogs in general, live longer on average than most purebred dogs. But we currently have no evidence that this is the case for the Boxador in particular. Only you can decide if the Boxer Lab mix is the right fit for your home. These are large dogs with big hearts that will give as much as they take. Boxadors love being part of a family. They are great with children and enthusiastic playmates for families with school age children and up. But this cross breed needs lots of exercise. They are fiercely attached to their people and dislike being left for long periods of time. This is a dog that suits a family with an active lifestyle and lots of love to give. Boxer Lab Mix Rescue Adopting a shelter dog always comes with risk. But Boxadors in shelters need homes and rescuing puppies or older dogs can be very rewarding. Labrador and Boxer breed rescues also sometimes have crossbreeds available. Dogs from adoption centers are usually much cheaper than puppies. But, remember you may need to spend lots of time helping them work through behavioral issues from past experiences. Finding Your Boxador Puppy Never buy a dog from a puppy mill or pet store. Or from the back of a vehicle. Always visit the puppy in his own home in the presence of his mother, who should be relaxed, healthy and friendly. Sadly with any very fashionable breed, or breed mix, there are many out there who are just looking to make a quick buck. Socialize your Boxador very thoroughly, exposing him to all kinds of fun experiences and making sure that he meets many different types of people, places, machinery etc. Given Boxadors intelligent nature and working history, get started on training your dog right away. Boxador Breeders It can be challenging to find a responsible breeder of cross breeds as there is currently quite a stigma against mixed breeding in the dog world. You must ask to see those certificates — they are very important. The parent dogs must have been screened for any genetic diseases and the breeder should be very forthcoming with any questions. Kid-Friendly: Needs a home with kids over 12 years This sweet girl came to the rescue in need of bowel obstruction surgery after she thought a sock was a yummy snack. She made it through surgery and has been recovering nicely! Bella Vida is quite shy and a bit hesitant to open up to new people, so she is looking for a patient family that will give her time and let her know she is safe. Bella Vida is selective with her dog friends and may do better with male dogs. She is looking for a house with no small children and would thrive with an active family with older kids. Bella Vida loves to go on daily walks and will play fetch for hours! She will always follow up these play sessions with a cuddle session on the couch. She loves deconstructing stuffed toys and sometimes her bedding. We would recommend caution in allowing Bella Vida unsupervised access to toys due to her recent sock-eating debacle. Due to our thorough adoption process including home visits, we limit our adoptions to local families in the greater Charlotte area.

French Bulldogs are loving, loyal, and caring by nature which makes them ideal family pets or companion dogs for older owners. French Bulldogs come in a range of colors that include white, fawn, brindle as well as combinations of the above. They have flattened faces and a cute demeanor which partly accounts for their soaring popularity amongst pet owners. French bulldog tails are very short with a thick root and a thin tip that hangs quite low compared to other breeds. French Bulldog tails are stumpy and are either straight, screwed, or sometimes have curves in them. However, this is not the case because in reality they are born with their characteristically small tails! Hemivertebrae This is a condition that can actually occur in any breed but is more likely to inflict dogs with screwed tails, including French Bulldogs as well as Boston Terriers and Pugs. The clearest sign that your dog has hemivertebrae is that instead of a vertebra in their back looking like a spool it takes on a more triangular shape. This can be painful for your dog and may, in some cases, require surgery to relieve the compression in its back. In the first instance, if you suspect your French Bulldog has hemivertebrae, you should visit your vet who will probably prescribe anti-inflammatories and several weeks of rest. Only if this fails to work will surgery be considered. A tail pocket infection is when the wrinkle pocket near the tail gets infected, swollen, and red. This can cause their tail pocket to smell extremely bad and make the skin painful and irritated for your pet. All-Purpose Grooming Wipes. All French Bulldogs DO have a tail. They will universally be short and stumpy. The tail length varies depending on which of the two types of tail your Frenchie has. People wonder all the time whether French Bulldogs are born with tails that are then cut off docked for cosmetic reasons. Fortunately, the answer is no — Frenchie tails are not docked or cut off. Frenchies are simply born with a short stumpy tail. There are two shapes of French Bulldog tails commonly, screw-shaped bends not curls or straight. How the shape is referred to depends on the thick base with a fine taper. Straight Tail vs Screw Tail Frenchies. When the tails are so short — it can be tricky to know the difference. So Are French Bulldogs born with tails? Yes, all French Bulldogs are born with tails. Some of them have very small tails that make it appear as though they have been docked when in fact it is due to breeding. Decades of breeding have resulted in French Bulldogs having very short tails. There are two main shapes of French Bulldog tails. Straight, and screw. Both should have a thick root with a fine tip. All tail types are very short tails. A long time ago, French Bulldogs did have longer tails. However, due to breeding over the years, their tails have become much shorter. This is not a bad thing, as French Bulldogs still look just as adorable with their short tails! Oddly enough — it was not just aesthetic breeding that led to a stumpy tail. The tails were short when a version of the Frenchie was used as a fighting dog. Luckily, this practice has been outlawed in most of the world for decades. This Frenchie on a park bench has a super short tail. The tail may be straight or screwed but NOT curly. Therefore you would never expect a pure French Bulldog to have a curly tail like a Boston Terrier , or a Pug. The breed standard expects a tail that is long enough to cover their butt, but cannot raise above horizontal. Their tails will point to the ground. This is not true — French Bulldogs can and do Wag their tails! Their tails are just so short that sometimes they struggle to do it. So a wagging Frenchie might not look quite as obvious as other happy dogs. When my Labradoodle Max wags his tail — the whole world knows as the fluffy tail makes quite the scene. The super-short tails of Frenchies are less obvious when wagging. Instead, look for a wagging BUTT of the dog. Many Frenchies will wag their entire rear end when they are excited or happy. A straight tail Frenchie can usually wag better than a screw tail Frenchie. A tail pocket is the skin fold or wrinkles just beneath the tail. Not all Frenchies will have a tail pocket — but many will. Frenchies can develop a tail pocket even up to six-seven months of age. Why do tail pockets matter for Frenchies? A tail pocket is a skin fold that does not get cleaned often. This fold can attract bacteria. If not cleaned or looked after — this pocket can get infected. This can be either a stinky problem for the Frenchie owner, or an uncomfortable or even painful issue for the dog. As a Frenchie owner, you will need to embrace your role of checking and occasionally cleaning the tail pocket if your dog has one. You do not want a bacterial infection. If there is a pronounced tail pocket you need to clean it frequently with neutral wipes and dry it with a soft, clean cloth. What fun! Hemivertebrae deformity is a spine problem that comes from selective breeding for a shorter tail. It results in compression of some fairly important nerves and anatomy. It can be both disabling and painful. Learn more in this somewhat upsetting study As an owner of a French Bulldog, you need to factor in regular Vet checks to identify this kind of serious issue early. If present it will require monitoring and sometimes surgical intervention. If you suspect such a condition — you need Vet advice. Full stop. A Vet can diagnose using either physical examination or more likely X-ray or CT or even MRI The treatment ranges from monitoring to symptomatic anti-inflammatories, and even surgery. Call Vic Kasser or Email! The dog's tail ranges from several inches in length and there may be dogs who do not have tail. The French Bulldog tail should be either straight or kinked but not curly , short, hung V low, thick root and fine tip; carried low in repose. The screw-tail shape is due to abnormal shape of tail bones, but this abnormality can also affect other parts of the spine with serious consequences. An understanding of the importance of the tail and the conditions to which a lack of tail can predispose is gained by reviewing the anatomy and the physiology of the normal length tail and the pelvic region. The normal canine tail consists of approximately 20 highly mobile vertebrae largely enclosed by very versatile muscles making the various segments, especially the tip capable of finely graded movements. French Bulldogs have an average of 6 or les vertebraes often deformed in their tails which are incapable of fine movement. Locomotion The tail is important as a means of counter-balance when the dog is carrying out complicated movements such as leaping, walking along narrow structures, or climbing. Tail muscles are also important in stabilising the vertebral column and supporting the action of the extensor muscles of the back as well as those of the croup and buttocks. Defecation and pelvic diaphragm integrity During defecation the dog assumes a squatting position with elevation of the tail an subsequent relaxation of muscles. The movement of the tail during the act of defecation has a direct influence in evacuating the faecal bolus. If the tail is removed from an inmature puppy the muscles of the tail and pelvis may fail to develop to their full potential. Removal of the tail in the mature dog may lead to atrophy and degeneration of these muscles. An absence of adequate function of these muscles may result in rectal dilatation, rectal sacculation and faecal incontinence. Any process resulting in fascial weakening, muscle atrophy, or muscle degeneration may predispose to this wekness in the pelvic diaphragm. Burrows and Ellison recorded a predisposition to perineal hernia in those brachycephalic breeds, which have naturally docked tails. Communication and canine behaviour The position of the tail and the way it is moved can signal pleasure, fear, friendliness, dominance, playfulness, defensiveness. Thus a very short tail can affect the interaction of dog with other animals and man. Some behaviourists believe the absence of a tail may predispose a dog to show unwarranted aggression to other dogs and man, or that they may be the victim of attacks by other dogs due to their failure to communicate. The tail is not merely an inconsequential appendage. It is an anatomically and physiologically significant structure which has many biological functions that should not he underestimated. February 7, No comments There are many benefits of living with French Bulldogs — their portable size, their endearing expressions, and their quirky personalities have made them one of the most popular dog breeds in America. However, before you bring a Frenchie home, potential owners need to be aware of the problems with their tails and tail pockets. Does the French Bulldog Have a Tail? Yes, French Bulldogs sport tails. One of the most endearing qualities about French Bulldogs are their rumps, capped off with a short tail. A short tail seems like it would be easier to keep clean and healthy than a long tail, but this is not the case. Frenchies are not all born with the same tail length. Some tails will be longer than others. This practice is now frowned upon, but some breeders still partially dock tails. You may see French Bulldogs in rescues or shelters with these altered tails. Frenchies often have health problems with their tails and tail pockets — the little dip right below the tail and above their rectums. However, not all Frenchies have tail pockets and puppies sometimes do not get a tail pocket until they are six months old. A tail pocket is like a facial wrinkle right under the tail. Because of this quirk, the pocket cannot get cleaned as easily as other skin can. If left unchecked, this pocket can get infected. The tails themselves are often prone to genetic problems and sunburn, especially if the tails are white. Just like people, dogs love the sun but sometimes stay out too long and get burned. Frenchies with screw tails are often prone to a genetic condition called hemi-vertebrae. In order to create that cute short tail, the vertebrae of the spine are pressed together more closely than in dogs with normal tails. Hemi-vertebrae can cause problems walking, limb paralysis and incontinence — most commonly at an older age. Hemi-vertebrae is a condition that only a veterinarian can treat. Often surgery is the only way to make any lasting help for the most serious conditions. Rest and anti-inflammatory painkillers can help in less severe cases. It can only be prevented by not breeding dogs known to have the condition. Treating an infected tail pocket also requires the help of a vet. Symptoms of an infected tail pocket include swelling, oozing a pus-like material and sometimes a bad smell. The skin gets very itchy, so your Frenchie may be scooting or scratching his rear end more often than usual. The infection is caused by dirt, droppings, and bacteria that have not been cleaned out from the tail pocket. This can be a painful and life-threatening condition, so get your Frenchie to the vet right away for a thorough removal of the infection and a course of antibiotics. In extreme cases, surgery is necessary. The bad news is that hemi-vertebrae is not preventable. The good news is that both sunburn and tail pocket infections are. Sunburn is the easier of the two to prevent. Sunscreen containing zinc oxide also can help. If you are unsure about what sunscreen to use on your Frenchie, please contact your vet before putting any cream on your dog. Tail pockets need cleaning and drying to keep the skin clean, dry and infection-free. Use the mildest baby wipes you can find to clean the pocket and then use a clean cloth to dry. At first, you may need your vet to show you what to do. Wrapping up The small Frenchie tail can cause big problems. Those with corkscrew-shaped tails are prone to hemi-vertebrae, a painful condition which can cause paralysis. Tails of white Frenchies are particularly prone to sunburn but this can be easily prevented through sunscreen and keeping your Frenchie indoors during the hottest parts of the day. Most, but not all, Frenchies over the age of six months have tail pockets, which is like a facial wrinkle under the tail. Because of the wrinkle, bacteria can get trapped and can cause a sore, itchy and potentially life-threatening infection. This can be prevented by cleaning the tail pocket every day with baby wipes and drying it with a soft, clean cloth. This may seem like a lot of work, but soon you and your dog will get into the routine of using sunscreen and getting the tail pocket cleaned. Frenchies are worth the extra effort! Are they docked? These are very common questions. According to the breed standards , French Bulldogs have a short tail that is thick at its root and fine at the tip. Their tails hang low, i. French Bulldogs tail type can be either straight or screwed, but not curly like Pugs or Boston Terriers. More on types below. Are French Bulldogs Born with Tails? French Bulldog puppies are naturally born with very short tails. This feature is a part of the breed characteristics. One of their gene mutations causes the tail to grow unusually short. So, the next question that you might be thinking is about docking practices. French Bulldog tails are not cut off or docked. Frenchies are born with short and stumpy tails due to their genes, not because they have been docked i. Not only is it a painful procedure for your pooch, especially if not done at birth, but it also causes severe spine problems in the future. Also, tail docking disqualifies a dog from registration. According to the breed standards, French Bulldog can have 2 types of tails: 1 — A Straight Tail The shape of the tail is straight and its longer than screw-shaped type. The tail is set low on their rear, i. However, screw-shaped tails are not curly, i. Can French Bulldogs Wag their Tails? French Bulldogs cannot wag their tails because they are short, they wiggle their bottom instead, as a sign that they are happy. Still, some Frenchies will manage to wag or shake their tail for a bit. Insider Tip: French Bulldogs with straight and longer tails will tend to wag their tails more. Both English and French Bulldogs are known to have a tail pocket. But not all Frenchies have a tail pocket. However, French Bulldogs with a screw tail get a fold between their coat and where their tail sits, creating a fold, pocket or wrinkle. The French Bulldog tail pocket refers to the area under their tail. For some French Bulldogs, the tail pocket is more pronounced than for others. When French Bulldogs have a screw tail, they are predisposed to tail infections, also known as tail pocket infections. The skin folds or pocket in the base of the tail collects dirt and other substances and over time causes irritation. As a result of this, the tail can get infected. Tail Infection Symptoms The usual symptoms of tail infection are: Itching and redness in the area. Bad odour due to the pus and dead skin. Treatment for Tail Infection Asses the severity and if you are unsure, check with your vet. However, you can start by cleaning the area: Wash the area with warm water and antiseptic soap first to remove any dirt. Then, you can use an antiseptic spray or wipes. After that, use a clean gauze to dry the area. You can also apply a soothing cream or coconut oil to help with the healing and reduce skin irritation. Note: If you feel at any moment that the infection is getting worse, get in touch with your vet. Trim the hair around the tail regularly. Wash the tail wrinkles and pocket using dog grooming wipes easy and effective. Apply coconut oil to prevent skin irritation, itchiness and dryness. Hemivertebrae refers to the bones in the spine that are abnormally shaped. This condition often leads to the tail being incorrectly aligned. Screw tails are often the main cause of tail deformities and spinal issues due to the bones being twirled and crushing the spinal column and nerves. As a result, French Bulldogs with screw tails can suffer from spinal deformities, also known as hemivertebrae condition. Hemivertebrae Symptoms Hemivertebrae in French bulldogs can be discovered by performing an X-ray and physical examination. Symptoms include: Wobbliness and loss of hind leg function. In extreme cases, they can lose control of their bladder and bowels. Treatment for Tail Deformities Hemivertebrae In not so severe cases, treatment will usually consist of anti-inflammatory drugs. But, more severe cases will require a surgical procedure called Hemilaminectomy in order to relieve the bones pressing on the spinal cord. This is an unexpected expense and is one of many scenarios where dog insurance comes in handy. With Petplan pet insurance , all hereditary and chronic conditions are covered as standard. Preventing Tail Deformities Unfortunately, the only way that hemivertebrae can be prevented is through responsible breeding. When breeding dogs that have genetic malformities, we are putting another litter out there with a genetic predisposition to having these same problems. Not only do the soft membrane of their ears makes them vulnerable, but also their tails! Sunburns can be extremely uncomfortable, and harmful — your dog is vulnerable to skin cancer. Sunburn Symptoms Sunburn is also fairly easy to notice in your dog. Common sunburn signs include: Red spots or pinkier colouring. Sore skin, i. Peeling skin. If you notice that your Frenchie is severely sunburnt or blistered, call your vet. Treatment for Sunburn Your vet will examine your French Bulldog tail and skin to determine coat type and skin pigmentation. Knowing how long your dog has been under the sun will also determine if your dog is sunburnt. To treat a severe sunburn, heat exhaustion and dehydration, your dog will be provided with fluids. This helps to stabilize your Frenchie. Preventing Sunburn Here are some simple tips to prevent sunburn: Avoid sunbathing, especially if your dog loves roasting under the sun very unlikely. Avoid strong sun rays by keeping your dog indoors during peak hours of the day midday. Only allow your Frenchie time in the sun early in the morning and during the late afternoon and evening. Discuss safe sun-screen options with your vet. The ASPCA says that ingesting certain sunscreens can cause drooling, vomiting, diarrhoea, excessive thirst and lethargy in pets. Some of are screw shaped, some with little curves, and others very short and straight. The stumpy tail is a by-product of the early days of breeding. Do French bulldogs have tails at all? Yes, they do, but they have been bred to produce cute, short, and stumpy little tails, which most of the time means their butt is on show. There tends to be three different types of Frenchie tail: Straight down and stumpy Screwed and stumpy never curly though Thick root with a very fine tip Here is a photo of the Frenchie rear end, where you can see very clearly what a classic tail looks like in the modern day. Are French bulldogs born with tails? Or are French bulldogs born without tails? They are born with tails, albeit not a long tail like most breeds of dog have. Here is a photo of a newborn little of Frenchie puppies where you can see what their tails look like just after birth. As you can see from these feeding puppies, they have very short and stumpy tails. Does their tail cause health problems? Unfortunately, it can. I was only aware of this whilst researching for this article. In some cases, it can mean deformity and instability in the spinal column, and that could lead to spinal and nerve damage — and pain! This genetic condition will occur in some Frenchies and is a direct consequence of breeders trying to make the screw type tail the preferred look. French Bulldog straight tail initiative Interestingly, and I think this is a great move, in a scheme was launched in the UK by the national Kennel Club to move away from the screw, cork-screw or tight tail to a straighter tail. Because the breeding that has led to this appearance is actually an in-bred spinal defect. Without them dogs can suffer with ailments such as dilation of the rectum, incontinence, and hernias. It will take time, but it would lead to obvious benefits. Their aim is to get the breed back to having the short-drop tail which is originally had, as you can see in this image of a French bulldog taken in .This image is from , and you can clearly see a more pronounced longer tail. Never curling over back nor carried gaily. Why do French bulldogs have short tails? Great question, and as you saw from that historical photo higher up the page, Frenchies used to have longer tails than the ones we see today. So why did they become shorter, looking like that had been docked or cut off? By selective breeding, it would have been possible to get shorter tails over time which could have offered: Given them increased speed watch the video where we tracked how fast our Frenchie was with radar and GPS! Helped to prevent rat bites to the tail Over time, as French bulldogs have moved away from being working dogs, it has become part of their cosmetic appeal, and thus, selective breeding has let them to be shorter and shorter tails. Interestingly, our dog Claude still has a lot of this rat catching DNA in him. Our personal experience with Claude We have first-hand experience of the docked tail misconception ourselves. My wife and I were horrified to think that someone believed we had paid for our beloved dog to have his tail removed. We then explained to them that French bulldogs are born with tails, but very short and stumpy ones. This is due to the way in which they have been bred down the years with other short-tailed dogs such as pugs and terriers. Are French bulldogs tails cut off at all? Weird I know. If the last tail bone is not pointy, this is a strong indication that part of the tail has been cut off and removed. Can French bulldogs wag their tails? French Bulldogs cannot wag their tails. Some will manage to move their stumpy tail a little, but in the main, a wagging bottom is a sign that a Frenchie is happy as their tails are too short to actually wag. Our personal experience If you know anything about dogs, you will know that a wagging tail is a sign that the dog is happy. So how do we know if Claude is happy or not? Well our little man is a complete clown and he has lots of other ways in which to show us how he is feeling. Sometimes that will be by his eyes, but most of the time just the way in which he is jumping around, cuddling into us, and being his happy little character. What he lacks for in a tail he more than makes up for in his behaviour. Apparently, shepherds used to do to prevent rabies. I have no idea how that would prevent rabies, so if anyone can tell me I would love to hear it! Later in history, there was a trend to remove the tail tips from hunting dogs on order to prevent them from being injured. You would assume that the less tail the dog has, the less inclined they would be to pick up an injury. It still seems a barbaric practice though. Docking the tail is either done in a homemade fashion where the owner wraps a rubber band around it to cut off the flow of blood. The tail will then drop off after a few days. It can also be done by a vet, which you would think would be way safer, and would lead to less chance of infection. However, as far as I can gather, neither procedures use anaesthetic or stitches. Does it hurt a dog to have its tail cut off? Evidence indicates that puppies have similar sensitivity to pain as adult dogs. Puppies give repeated intense shrieking vocalisations the moment the tail is cut off and during stitching of the wound, indicating that they experience substantial pain. Inflammation and damage to the tissues also cause ongoing pain while the wound heals. There is also the risk of infection or other complications associated with this unnecessary surgery. For example, when a chronic neuroma forms at the amputation site. Neuromas are often very painful. I also looked up the law in the United States to see what the regulations were, and I am happy to say that tail docking is also prohibited for cosmetic purposes. Below you can see a graphic that I found on Wikipedia that the legal status of dog tail docking by country. Having researched for this article, I also now know that the shorter tails they are being bred in modern times, are in fact a spinal deformity, and can lead to health issues — you can see the most common French Bulldog health problems in this list. We love our dog, and thankfully he is very healthy with no concerns and we hope he continues to be so. But I am fully behind the new initiatives to bring the longer tail back, as for the future generations of the breed, it has to be done. It should also help you to counter any accusations of docking as we had when we took our dog for a walk that time. Do French Bulldogs Have Tails? French Bulldogs have naturally short tails which may be straight, or corkscrewed. The anatomy of their tail makes them prone to a range of health problems, which potential owners ought to be aware of. And the answer is yes, they are. French Bulldogs are born with naturally short tails. Most dogs have 18 to 23 tail bones, which are an extension of the vertebrae in their spine. But French Bulldogs have as few as nine, so their tail is very short. Straight tails start thick at the base and taper towards the tip. Screw tails have a series of tight bends in them, so that they sit like a cinnamon roll below the root. When Frenchie puppies with screw tails are born, their tails are supple enough to be gently unrolled. But as they mature, they set in place in a tight bun. French Bulldogs do not usually have their tails docked. Tail docking started out as a way of protecting working dogs from tail injuries, but Frenchies have no working history. When taxes were introduced on pet dogs, docking some pet breeds in order to pass them off as working dogs became popular too. French Bulldogs do not traditionally have their tails docked, but some do end up requiring surgical tail amputation for medical reasons. Frenchie dogs without tails The anatomy of the Frenchie tail means that their tail sits flush against the skin on their butt, creating a pocket underneath. This makes them vulnerable to a condition called intertrigo. Intertrigo is when two skin surfaces rub together, causing irritation and inflammation. The damaged skin becomes an entry point for bacteria, causing a tail pocket infection. Some French Bulldog tail pocket infections can be treated with antibiotics, but severe or recurring infections can only be resolved by removing the tail altogether. No Bulldogs have tails as long as, say, a Labrador or a Golden Retriever. But, Some French Bulldogs have straight tails, which naturally appear longer than a tail with a series of tight kinks in it. The frequency of the two French Bulldog tail types depends partly on your region. In the UK, not only should their tails be straight as previously mentioned, but the breed standard also says it ought to be long enough to cover the anus. Health Concerns of Frenchie Dogs With Short Tails Unfortunately, there are numerous complications associated with screw tails, the most notable of which are hemivertebrae and spina bifida. Hemivertebrae are misshapen bones in the tail and the base of the spine. Hemivertebrae are widespread among French Bulldogs, and highly heritable. Which means the puppies of affected dogs are likely to be affected too. Which is why removing screwtail Frenchies from breeding programmes and making straight tailed dogs the most acceptable and desirable option is the surest way to securing the future health of the breed. Like hemivertebrae, spina bifida can result in lameness and incontinence. Both conditions are expensive and difficult to treat, and cause a whole lot of heart ache. You can read more the health problems associated with screw tails in this article. Health Problem Associated With Flat Faces Even though we have mostly focussed on the Frenchie butt in this article, it would be wrong not to also mention the problems many Frenchies experience at the other end of their body. In fact, the two are actually linked, because screw tails and hemivertebrae are closely associated with flat faced dog breeds including Frenchies, English Bulldogs, Pugs and Boston Terriers. Heat stroke caused by the difficulty breathing. Dental problems. Damage to the surface of the eyes because the sockets are shallow and the eyeballs protrude from them. Infections in the wrinkled skin over their nose and brow. Elsewhere in their bodies, brachycephalic dogs like Frenchies also have higher than average frequencies of gastrointestinal problems, skin diseases, and difficulties giving birth. For all these reasons, unfortunately we do not recommend flat faced dogs including French Bulldogs as pets. Frenchie Tail Summary French Bulldogs are in fact born with tails, but they are short and inconspicuous. The two Frenchie tail types are straight and corkscrew. Owing to the health problems associated with corkscrew tails, some breeders and breed clubs are making a conscious decision to move away from them and focus on breeding lines with straight tails. What do you think? Would you prefer to see more Frenchies with longer, straighter tails? Let us know in the comments box down below! Alternative Dogs With Short Tails Unfortunately the best known dogs with short tails, such as Pugs and Bulldogs, share many of the same health problems as the unlucky Frenchie. The handsome Pembroke Welsh Corgi is a well known alternative with a naturally short tail and a normal length muzzle. Here are three other less well known breeds, which can all be born with naturally short tails. French Bulldogs are often best described as having a stumpy tail. While there are several other tail types, including a knot, screw-shaped or tapered, all Frenchie tails are still short. While breeders of unsavory roots back in the day used to deliberately change the shape of Frenchie tails while they were still newborns, this practice has long since been banned. Talk about a need-to-know fact when it comes to parental satisfaction. Because there is not enough of a tail there to wag! To show their happiness, Frenchies often wag their whole scrunchie butts instead! Except for a few that have a bit of a longer tail more on that in a moment. What do French Bulldogs tails look like? The three main kinds are below. French Bulldog screw tail A common one to find on the websites of dog breeds or online, if you do a wider search, is a Frenchie Bulldog screw tail. This tail waves from left to right and back, or, more commonly right to left and then back to right again. These tails are popular with breeders and, therefore, in Frenchies. However, screw tails are considered to be painful for Frenchies. Whether the screw is tight or a bit looser for a gentle curve, a screw tail brings pain for Frenchies due to the health problems that it usually brings along with it more on that in a moment. This tail is often thick at its root and then thin at its end. To our human eyes, it looks like the Frenchie has his tail swooped into a bun. The knob size itself can vary from pup to pup. What is a French Bulldog tail pocket? Not all French Bulldogs have tail pockets, but it is a common characteristic to Frenchies. Some have simple, almost invisible little indentations under their tail. Others have rather deep pouches that can be tricky to keep clean keep reading for help with this. This varies from litter to litter and from pup to pup! French Bulldog tail problems French Bulldogs can be prone to health problems that are thought to be connected to either their tail form or their tail pocket. The most common issue is tail pocket infections. Hemivertebrae This condition is most commonly associated with a French Bulldog screw tail, which is one of the reasons why a lot of the professionals out there frown upon this tail type. While hemivertebrae can be an issue with Frenchies that have straight tails, the likelihood genetics aside is thought to be lower. This is a scary word for a scary condition, unfortunately. A Frenchie gets his characteristic tail due to the vertebrae in the spine being compressed together. In some cases, this compression is unequal, and it can lead to a crooked and physically stressed spine that is called hemivertebrae. This is a serious condition as it can lead to issues with mobility or even limb paralysis, incontinence in seniors , and more. If your Frenchie is diagnosed with hemivertebrae, treatment often revolves around therapeutic details such as massage therapy or even physiotherapy. Hemivertebrae is a painful condition, and these kinds of strengthening and relaxing treatments can help ease the discomfort for your pooch. French Bulldog tail pocket infections can come from all sorts of causes. Popular ones include droppings that find their way in there, bits of grass, pollen or dirt, and even a moisture build-up that leads to an infection on its own. Symptoms of an infection include swelling and redness around the tail and its pocket. The area may also be itchy and dry, compelling your pooch to do some scooting across the floor. While it may seem mild to us, an infection can be excruciating and even life-threatening. The more often you do this, the easier it will be to catch something before it even has a chance to start and cause discomfort to your Frenchie. Clean it regularly As you may already know, Frenchies have sensitive skin and this is included in their tail pocket. If you notice a serious amount of build-up, you can also try hydrogen peroxide. This is stronger than a wipe or a regular cleaner, of course, but it can kill bacteria and mold growth effectively. Proper inspection and handling of his pocket are going to be as integral to his health as proper grooming, nail clipping, and teeth cleaning. Limit their sun exposure French Bulldogs are prone to sunburns because their fur is thin and fine. Limit his direct exposure to sunshine and also really make sure that you slather on the doggie-friendly sunscreen, paying particular attention to his tail and pocket. This will keep the skin moisturized, strong and a lot easier to take care of as far as cleaning and keeping healthy. But, what it all comes back to is remembering that they are natural, undocked tails and that proper assessment, cleaning, and protection of tail and tail pocket will help keep you and your pooch happy and healthy for a long time to come.

A big thanks to all my customers over the past 30 years! I want you all to know, it's been my pleasure to raise these fantastic East German dogs and make so many people happy. I began this venture in my late 30's, i am now in my late 60's. I spent the summer of , closing the kennel, adopting out my beautiful girls and boys, to fantastic homes, all of whom are great customers and friends, to whom I am truely grateful. Many of you heard me mention Colorado over the years, I finally made the big move to be closer to my younger sister! With the help of my good friend ,Cathy Seal, I did 2 breedings of our great stock, and am raising a breeding pair out here, couldn't give it up completely, I would be lost! I will continue to update website on my progress in Colordo and pics of young breeding pair as they grow. Expecting to breed about a year from now. Again thankyou to all my fantastic customers, you can keep in touch still by same email and phone. At Von BarrenBerg, you know what your getting! Bonnie on right, founder of breeding program, Colorado on left Bonnies daughter Colorado and Bonnie, on right, founder of breeding program Helping to preserve the DDR East German dog, has become a very important part of my life. I would like to share with you just how and why the DDR dog has won my heart. I have been rehabilitating and training dogs for 30 years. The first "problem dog" was sent to me when I was .In , I decided to look for a quality dog, one I could train and show for my own pleasure. The German Shepherd dog always had impressed me, so the search started. Having a good eye for animals, I knew what I wanted, but quickly became more and more discouraged with what I was finding. I didn't take long to knock the American show dog off the list, for to me the physical structure and the character trait of lack of courage were not very appealing. I knew I wanted a dog with versatility-one that could be trained in different areas, such as TDI Therapy Dog International and protection! The German-bred dogs were the ones to look at, but still, something wasn't right. In some cases the drive was too high, even when we weren't working. In addition, I still had a certain quality of bone structure and overall character traits that I was looking for. After a long search, I was beginning to think the dog I had pictured in my mind had been lost due to changes in breeding programs over the years. Then one night while reading the Want Ads, I came across an ad that caught my eye. It was the first time I had heard a DDR shepherd dog ever mentioned. I will never forget the dark, rainy night I drove out to western Massachusetts to look at the dogs. My search was over! The adults had that unmistakably friendly eye as well as the strong bone and head structure I had been looking for. This is where my beloved "Bonnie" picked me out. Little did I know then how much she would change my life! She was her father's daughter in every way, a masculine female with a sound temperament. She went on to teach me the characteristics so common to the DDR dog: an ideal companion dog for inside the house, as well as a great traveling companion, excited about activities such as camping, mountain climbing, etc. Although an extremely obedient and dedicated companion, I was to learn over the years that performance obedience for showing was not easily achieved. I always told people, "She knows there is no reason to walk circles in a ring! Companion Dog which, with a lot of work, she scored in the 's, we stuck to things we could both enjoy! This included things like TDI, protection training, tracking, and even some big Hollywood movies! Over the years I was fortunate enough to meet Teri Townsend, and together with her fine DDR stock, including the late Klokows Lex, Bonnie has produced outstanding sons, daughters, and grandchildren, with high levels of quality DDR blood. They have made many parents and children very happy. They have also have become search and rescue dogs, police dogs, and even sledding dogs! Bonnie past away in , people visit her family here regularly. They always speak for themselves! Even show breeders who have never heard of the DDR shepherd have come to visit, and leave wanting one of the dogs for companionship! I strongly believe it would be a very sad day for the German Shepherd dog if the DDR blood is not preserved. I am extremely grateful that of all the dogs I have owned and trained, God brought Bonnie into my life, which opened my eyes to this unique DDR dog whose line I take great pride and pleasure in helping to preserve! This story was written by Linda in .Unfortunatly, Bonnie is no longer with us. She has however left us with a great line of DDR quality progeny. Bonnie, Colorado, Elsa, Dennie in sled with Linda. Because of the invasion their country by Germany, the Soviets joined the Allies, and by late , the United States and Great Britain were closing in on Germany from the West, while the Soviets were closing in from the East. It is rumored that Hitler committed suicide when it seemed inevitable that the Allies would win. By September , the German Reich which lasted only 13 years and its Axis partners Italy and Japan had been defeated. In the immediate post-war years the German population lived on near starvation levels, and the Allied economic policy was one of de-industrialization in order to prevent any future German war-making capabilities. The U. Despite being allies against the Axis powers, the USSR and the United States disagreed about the configuration of the post-war world while occupying most of Europe. A large dispute arose over the boundaries. Because of the different political beliefs between these nations, relationships were strained and thus began the Cold War. The Soviet Union decided to close its borders and this eventually led to the division of Germany into East and West. The three western occupation zones U. West Germany was established as a federal democratic republic while East Germany became a Communist State under the influence of the Soviet Union. This fact set the stage for the Cold War which lasted for the next 46 years. One of the greatest impacts to the German Shepherd breed was, in fact, the onset of the Cold War. The concept of the Iron Curtain symbolized the ideological and physical boundary dividing Europe into two separate areas from the end of World War II in until the end of the Cold War in .During this period, these countries were virtually cut off from any outside contact. The government made any and all decisions and this happen to include strictly regulating breeding kennels. The government controlled the German Shepherd pedigree registration and breeding program because they saw the DDR German Shepherd as a military canine. Extremely rigid breeding guidelines were put into practice. Agree with the standards or not, one cannot argue that it did assure that for almost 40 years only the dogs who met strict criteria were allowed to breed. These standards included powerful, deep chested bodies with straight long backs, intimidating presence and supreme intelligence. Strict standards assured that dogs showing signs of hip dysplasia were not used for breeding. Any litter born was examined completely for teeth, ear set, temperament, coat, etc. They examined them as if they were evaluating a piece of military equipment — Did it meet military standards? These standards included specific working abilities for these dogs — such as, tracking, athleticism, toughness, climbing abilities, hardiness, and the ability to withstand extreme physical conditions and demands. These strict regulations on the breed resulted in the formation of the DDR Shepherd — breeding lines within the border of the Berlin Wall that had no outside influence and were held strictly to government standards. Other breeding criteria of DDR dogs stated that they could only be bred if they were completely free of hip dysplasia. The testing criteria of the East was also much more rigid than that of the West Germans. They were bred for strong bones to handle the great distances they would be expected to patrol. They were constantly exposed to the harshest weather conditions to build stamina, a genetic resistance to disease, and ability to function in the worst of weather conditions. The dogs had be able to scale a straight wall instead of an incline wall , walk balance beams, search more blinds, track longer and farther — the test were stricter and more physically demanding. Only the best of the best would be able to reproduce. The breeding criteria as well as the harshness of their environment shaped the look of the East German DDR Shepherd into one of pure intimidation. They had large heads, broad shoulders, deep chests and dark coats. The East German national breeding program, as ruthless as it was at times, succeeded. They were in charge of guarding 1, kilometers of East German Border. By the early s, West Germany was rapidly becoming a postwar industrial powerhouse. The Communist domain, however, languished economically. It began to leak skilled workers. The main border between East and West Germany was sealed. However, because of its four-power status, Berlin remained open. East Germans seeking a better life could still leave for West Berlin and, from there, fly to West Germany. Of 17 million East Germans, 2. Hence, the Berlin Wall. It began 50 yards deep on the East Berlin side, with a high wall greeting potential escapers. Towers stood every hundred yards, manned by guards with orders to shoot on sight. At the end of their first year of forming there were over 3, soldiers comprising the unit. The Grenztruppen and their dogs watched over minefields, border fences; many people will remember Check Point Charlie and the watch towers. Many dog runs or fenced pens also were set up throughout the border — dog runs or pens were in Berlin alone! Dog runs covered 97 kilometers of the border deploying approximately 1, sentry dogs. The area fluctuated between kilometers. The dog run comprised of dogs being leashed to a suspended line. The dogs in the runs or pens were fed only once in a 10 day period to retain their ferociousness. More than just a sentry dog, many of these Shepherds served as tracking dogs, and attack dogs. This began a chain reaction that eventually led to the fall of the Berlin Wall. On June 13th, the East German military began dismantling the Wall. Free passage between East and West Germany had already been permitted for several months. The Grenztruppen were officially disbanded in .Soon after, much of the rest of the world began importing these dogs from East Germany at a rapid rate. Much of the German populace saw the dogs as a symbol of their repression and others simply had no room or financial ability to maintain the dogs. They were disbanded with alarming speed. Thankfully, there are still a small handful of DDR breeders left that realize the value of the years of strict East German breeding. These breeders have helped preserve the lineage of this incredible dog and are working to maintain their standards as well. It would be a shame to see this incredible breed of the working German Shepherd disappear. With careful breeding, we have the opportunity to preserve the DDR GSDs with their natural defense drive, tracking abilities, temperament and structure. Degenerative Myelopathy Von Willebrand Disease Perhaps the most well-known is hip dysplasia, a condition that causes the hip joint to develop abnormally. This can lead to pain and lameness, and eventually requiring surgery. German Shepherds are also at risk for elbow dysplasia, a similar condition that affects the elbow joint. Other common health problems include allergies, intestinal issues, and eye problems. With proper care and diet, however, German Shepherds can live long and healthy lives. Finding a German Shepherd puppy for sale from a reputable breeder can dramatically — although, not eliminate — the risk of your dog developing some of these conditions. While German Shepherds are often considered to be low-maintenance when it comes to grooming, their coats do require some care and attention. The most important thing to know about German Shepherd coat care is that the breed does not shed uniformly throughout the year. After the shedding period has ended, you can reduce the frequency of brushing to once or twice a week. In addition to regular brushing, German Shepherds also need to be bathed on occasion. How often you need to bathe your German Shepherd will depend on factors such as how often they play outside and whether they have any allergies or skin sensitivities. Generally speaking, however, a once-monthly bath is sufficient for most dogs. German Shepherd Puppies For Sale. Eugene Thompson and Mr. Wayne Richards pronounced Ri-shard. Her kennel was founded on Grand Victor GV Harrigan, whom many claims were the greatest shepherd that ever lived. From the same lines that produced GV Harrigan, gave rise to the Heidelberg German Shepherd Dogs, as well as, many of the other highly regarded top producing kennels in the United States. Unfortunately, many of these other kennels went another direction in their breeding in the late s and early s by producing a more extreme show dog type of German Shepherd that is over angulated. In addition, these top kennels in many cases disregarded temperament. Our guidelines to breeding the Heidelberg German Shepherd Dogs are, first and foremost, temperament, followed by health, and finally, show quality and appearance. More than champions later and several thousands of satisfied owners of the Heidelberg type of German Shepherd Dogs, we continue breeding Heidelberg German Shepherds that are world-renowned. We continue to use the Heidelberg name because we do not breed these dogs for our ego to have some contrivance of our last name to label our dogs with and to collect accolades. Rather we breed these shepherds for the future generations that will enjoy and love these wonderful German Shepherd Dogs, as we do, long after us. Why change the name? American vs. European: One Disclaimer: Before reading, the following note that we are providing only anecdotal evidence that we have witnessed with our eyes. Throughout the years, we have observed that the biggest cowards and least trainable dogs consistently are the so-called import German shepherd dogs. For example, when the owner brings their import out for boarding, the import will have its hackle up and be extremely aggressive towards staff, even to the point of snapping at our staff. This aggression is unfounded, and these shepherds are potential liabilities for their owners. However, after the owner leaves, these same dogs become cowards. They consistently refuse to socialize with other dogs or staff and coward in the corners of their kennels. This type of temperament would not protect their owners if a real threat materialized. For example, while these dogs are being aggressive towards staff, a quick step towards them would send them cowering behind their owners. This is not the correct German shepherd temperament. Keystone German shepherds are not aggressive towards strangers and do not coward from threats. Our dogs are aloof toward strangers until they learn that they are friendly, in which time they will readily accept the stranger as a family friend. Likewise, if the stranger proves to be a threat to family or property, our shepherds may provide a warning growl. At this point, if the bad actor does not cease, but continues with their aggressive behavior, they may be met with a bite. At this time, the perpetrator will again be allowed to stop with their aggressive actions; however, our shepherds may meet additional aggressive acts with increasing aggression. This is the correct protective temperament of the German shepherd dogs. This natural, innate protective behavior, by our dogs, is not learned and cannot be trained, and it may keep you from being sued. The correct shepherd temperament is discerning and controlled. Note: all breeds of dogs can become liabilities if untrained or improperly trained. The European or import shepherd purposely is bred to be high-strung and restless. They breed these dogs to be high energy translated as high maintenance for the very demanding sport of Schutzhund and police work. This is a very legitimate pursuit, and necessary for the production of police and military dogs. However, let us be realistic, for every puppy produced that would excel at this sport or as a working dog, these breeders produce several cull dogs for which they have to find homes. Some of these breeders sell these cull dogs to the unsuspecting public. Invariably they will sell these dogs to families that are ill-equipped to deal with a nervous, high-strung dog that must be occupied or they become destructive. These are the very same dogs that we see time again being boarded at our kennels. Our shepherds while capable at excelling at Schutzhund and police work are even-tempered. They are bred to be relaxed and calm. Our shepherds are happy to lie down next to you while you watch television or if asked to herd livestock or play fetch. They are focused on you and your activities. This is what we believe is the correct shepherd temperament, which is a pleasure to live with. We had a European breeder come out to our kennels to try to show us how superior his European lines were to our American lines. He brought out his prize stud. This dog was released from his crate and took off running around our property. After minutes of this man trying to catch his prize import to demonstrate him to us, we told him that we had to get back to work. The man finally caught his dog and left. We never saw him again. Our dogs never run off from us. Our dogs are true shepherds and as such, they are herding dogs. They herd us by observing us, they love us, and we become their sole purpose in life. For example, while at dog shows, we exercise our dogs off-leash several times a day. We usually find a big open field so that they can run and play. A competitor once asked us why we would take the chance of losing one of our valuable show dogs by letting them off the lead. I responded that we are not taking any risks because if our dogs wander too far, all we have to do is call their name and they come to us at a full run. Our competitors exercise their dogs at the shows in small pens because their dogs will run off and not return. We had another Schutzhund trainer come out to purchase one of our puppies. He had seen one of our dogs at a Schutzhund event and he was quite impressed with its working abilities. European: Two American vs. European: Two However, because of years of propaganda about how inept American lines are, he could not bring himself to purchase one of our puppies. He left our place muttering that these dogs cannot be this good. The poor man wanted one of our puppies so bad, but he could not let go of his incorrect biases. I also suspect that the man was afraid of the grief that he would receive from his schutzhund friends if he showed up with one of our American bred, German shepherd Dogs. We had another misguided import breeder challenge our dogs and their temperaments. He asked us if he could come out and perform temperament tests on our puppies. We obliged him. He ran through all his tests with our puppies passing all of his tests. Perplexed and frustrated, the man picked up a large stainless steel bowl and threw it down as hard as he could on concrete in the middle of the six-week-old puppies. The puppies reacted as any normal living thing would by running a few steps from the loud noise and then turning to investigate. They were scared; your dogs have terrible temperaments. Structurally many shepherds have been bred to be deficient. Both European and American lines have their specific problems. Many American lines have been bred to have severe angulations and slopes to their backs, that forces these dogs to run on their hocks or to flip their hocks in and out of their body line to provide leg clearance while trotting. This can be readily viewed by watching a dog trot away from you. The correct motion when viewing a dog in a trot moving away from you is that the rear legs and hocks should move in straight lines in an economy of motion. We breed our dogs to be structurally correct, and thus movement is fluid without wasted motion or energy. Likewise, many imports have been bred to have an imbalance with strong shoulders with weak and underdeveloped rear legs. These dogs are two-wheel drive only. You can see this best when they are on a lead and digging in, thus driving with their front legs almost dragging their rear legs. This has been taken to the extreme with some of the import lines, which can be best seen with what is termed as a roached back. This roached back results in a downward tilt of the pelvis and curved spine, which weakens the rear legs and negating a fluid trot. Most all modern imports and European dogs have very short and choppy strides. This short and choppy stride results in very inefficient movement. These dogs would be poor herding dogs and would quickly tire much quicker than shepherds with correct and efficient movement. Take note of the heads of many of the modern European and import shepherds. Due to the shorter snout, the jaw of many imports was forced to be wider because teeth have not changed in size or number It is very difficult genetically to change teeth the jaws and head of imports have become wider to accommodate all the teeth. Notice also the lack of leg bone thickness on many of the import shepherds. Many of these dogs have a petite bone structure, which is undesirable for herding or working dogs. The bones need to be substantial and strong to avoid breakage in the field or while bringing down a criminal. A dog with a broken leg cannot perform its job. Nature does not make mistakes over the long-term. Compare shapes and angles by examining several pictures of the wolf compared to the import and our dogs. Then examine and compare pictures of our German Shepherd Dogs vs. The difference will become evident in these visual comparisons. Do not buy into the propaganda that imports are inherently superior to all American lines. This propaganda was started as a sales technique to get unsuspecting purchasers to pay more for inferior and sometimes extremely ugly shepherds. If examined and investigated with an open and intelligent mind, you will come to the conclusion that our Heidelberg German Shepherd Dogs are superior in temperament, structure, and natural beauty than most all other lines and types of shepherds whether European, imported, or American. What is beautiful? Researchers have attempted to define beauty. The overwhelming consensus in defining what is beautiful and aesthetically pleasing to the eye was found to be in Form and Function, Balance, and Symmetry of the object considered. The Heidelberg shepherd meets these definitions of beauty. Few scenes in life are as invigorating and stimulating as watching a Heidelberg German Shepherd Dog running in a flying trot across an open grassy field. The opposite is true! Our German shepherds are loving, sweet, and gentle dogs, especially around small children. Supplements and Supplies We offer everything that is needed to bring home a new puppy from toys, collars, to water and feeding bowls. The prices and quality are exceptional and, we are likely less expensive than big wholesale houses such as PetsMart because our overhead is lower. In addition, we provide one of the best vitamin supplements available. Our Pure Total Vitamin Supplement meets the micro and macro-nutritional requirements needed by your growing German Shepherd Dog, puppy or adult. These nutrients cannot be obtained from the diet alone. Have you seen puppies eat dirt or grass? They do this because their nutritional requirements are not being met. Our supplement contains diatomaceous earth, brewers yeast, active yeast enzymes, vitamins B complexes, E, and C, kelp, flax seed meal, chicken liver powder, brewers yeast, selenimum, complex amino acids, Omega oils, and fishmeal. We also provide the purest contaminant free cod liver oil available in one-quart bottles that will last approximately 3 months. Our cod liver oil is human grade and many of customers use it for their own nutritional regime. Keystone Store Vaccinations We start vaccinations on our puppies at six weeks using Duramune Vaccines. Our first series of shots include distemper and parvo. At six and nine weeks we vaccinate for Distemper, Parvo live and killed , Adenovirus Type 2, and parainfluenza, and corona. At 12 weeks we vaccinate for all the above including 4-Leptospira Canicola — Icterohagiae Bacterin. This same shot is repeated at 16 and 20 weeks and then again at 6 months. Since following this vaccination regime, we have not had any puppies get sick. We also inoculate for rabies between four and six months followed by an annual booster then biannually after age three. Oklahoma rabies is required annually for the first two shots and then bi-annually. We sell puppy shots and adult shots for a fraction of the cost of going to a veterinarian clinic. Our vaccines are always fresh and up to date. For example, we were one of the first kennels to receive the new vaccines that protect against the new strain of Canine parvovirus type 2 CPV.Since we are not veterinarians it is illegal in Oklahoma for us to administer shots to dogs not owned or co-owned by us. Our vaccines are easily administered intramuscularly by injecting the needle quickly into the meaty part of the rear hip. We usually have an assistant hold the puppy in the air with the rear leg hanging loosely relaxed and the puppy does not even know it has received an inoculation. For rabies shots, we administer these subcutaneous by grabbing the loose skin on the back and injecting just under the skin. Please call or text to reserve a spot. We do tend to fill up during major holidays. Space is limited. We will board at no charge and breed your female every other day to a stud dog of your choice. Stud fees are nonrefundable, although if female fails to get pregnant you may bring her out for an additional breeding. If a third breeding is necessary, we will require that a veterinarian examine the female to ensure fertility before we attempt the third breeding. If your female is a virgin, no brucellosis test is required. However, if she has previously been bred to a dog other than a Heidelberg, we require a brucellosis test. We did much of the work ourselves, and after my real job, I would drive out to the property to do construction work. This particular occasion, I was on the property installing hardwood floors. Oregon became bored with my installation work and he decided to find another room with a cool place to lie down on the concrete subfloor. I stepped outside the back door to rinse out a bucket when out of the woods two very large Rottweilers came running straight towards me. I instantly could tell that these were not friendly dogs and that they were intent upon attacking me. With one Rottweiler, I could possibly defend myself, but with two, I was in real trouble. Suddenly, I felt Oregon brush across my leg as he charged to meet these two large muscular dogs. He slammed into the shoulder of the closest one knocking him over, and then Oregon latched onto the face of the other with a guttural growl. Unsettled they ran back into the woods from which they had materialized. Oregon was in hard pursuit. After I processed all that had taken place in a matter of seconds, my thoughts and concerns were redirected to Oregon. Before I could call him, a terrible noise came from the woods. I heard dogs growling, crying, screaming, and then silence. Then Oregon appeared unscathed from the woods in an extremely proud trot. Naturally, I gave him the royal treatment for the rest of the day. I am convinced that I would have been severely injured or worse if Oregon had not been there to protect me. If you need a protector for your wife or children, call us for the best home protector and baby-sitter that you will ever own. No alarm or security system short of a hour armed guard could protect your family and property as well. Nancy and the Kids Nancy has asked to remain anonymous. Nancy was 27 married with children, a boy and girl age 3 and 2, and her husband traveled a lot for his job. They had purchased their Heidelberg shortly after they were married to protect Nancy while her husband was out-of-town. In this neighborhood, the mailboxes were on the front porches. One night while alone with her two small children Nancy was awakened to the sound of a deep guttural growl, that she had never heard before. The growl caused the hair of her neck to stand. She got out of bed and followed Chance downstairs where he jumped up on the back window barking loudly. Nancy still hazy from her deep sleep thought the best thing to do was to open back door and let Chance out. Nancy called the police, and the police found that the screen was removed from the back window and that the window had been pried open. The intruder, they said, was only moments from coming in the house. A week later in the same neighborhood, an intruder broke into a house and brutally raped a woman. They never did catch this predator, but what is known is that Chance saved Nancy and her two children from a potentially brutal attack. While our kennel was small, we still had several German Shepherd Dogs that we had to divide them up and have family members care for them until we could purchase property and build kennels in Oklahoma. During these trips, Patty started to notice that every time she had high or low blood sugar Bismarck would lean over the car seat and incessantly lick her face. Patty has had juvenile diabetes since she was years-old. Sometimes with high or low sugar blood levels diabetics will not help themselves because they become confused mentally. Therefore, family members may have to force the diabetic to test and treat their sugar blood level. One day, my daughter and I had just started to watch a movie when Patty said that she was going to Wal-Mart. Two hours later, Ashley walked outside to find Patty hanging halfway out the door of her vehicle passed out and almost in a diabetic coma. Patty would check her sugar in the evenings and if it was high or low, she would then bring Kodi into the house and love on him until her sugar returned to normal levels. Kodi goes everywhere with Patty including work, restaurants, when she travels, etc. In the four years that Kodi has been a full-time Service Dog, the only serious diabetic event Patty has had is when she left Kodi at home to do some Christmas shopping in .Patty had disappeared for several hours and the entire family began calling her. When she answered the phone it was obvious that her blood sugar was low and that she did not know where she was while driving her car. We finally got her to park in a parking lot and through a lot of questioning, we pinpointed her general location. Her sister found her and got her to eat dinner, and Patty recovered. The next shopping trip, Kodi went with Patty. Kodi sleeps on the floor next to Patty and wakes her up in the middle of the night if her sugar is high or low. This is a great comfort to the family because most diabetics slip into diabetic comas or even die while asleep. This nighttime risk for diabetics is because nobody is around to know they are in trouble. He is our hero!

Boxers are very intelligent dogs which means that, with patience on your part, they will soon learn exactly where they are supposed to go. I love animals and love helping people adopt a pet. Brush it with a rubber curry brush once or twice a week to keep it looking good. The Boxer tends to be a clean breed only occasionally needing a bath. Origin The name Boxer is thought to come from the way they use their front paws for just about everything; pawing at its food bowls, toys, and even its owner in a playful way. Boxers were first used for dog-fighting, bull-baiting, cart pulling, cattle dogs, rounding up livestock, and to catch and pin wild boar and bison until hunters could arrive. Later they became popular theater and circus dogs. There are two types of Boxers: the German and the American Boxer. These cute little designer dogs can be great family pets and good companions for work-at-home people. They were bred for those who loved the standard Labradoodle but wanted something smaller. This crossbreed is a popular choice for both experienced and new dog owners because of their calm temperament. They get along with other people and dogs and are easy to train. They can be stubborn, but they are very reward-driven. Even someone with allergies can potentially keep this dog. The idea originally started when breeders bred purebred Labrador Retrievers and standard Poodles to make more hypoallergenic dog breeds with Labrador friendliness and intelligence, creating the standard Labradoodle. But as wonderful as Labradoodles are, they can get pretty huge. Both the Labrador and the standard-sized Poodle are pretty big. So reputable breeders started breeding the purebred Labrador Retriever with the purebred Miniature Poodle to make a smaller version: the Mini Labradoodle. These cute little dogs are known for having big personalities despite their smaller bodies. They love their humans and can sometimes be protective of them. They also love running around and playing. Mini Labradoodles are highly intelligent, like their parents, and are very easy to train. They combine the loyalty, intelligence, and easy trainability of the Labrador with the low-shedding, more allergy-friendly coat of the Standard Poodle and Mini Poodle. Vital Statistics Height: inches, highly dependent on parents Weight: pounds, highly dependent on parents Average lifespan: years Energy level: High energy and needs lots of exercise Trainability: Highly intelligent dogs and easily trainable Shedding: Low shedder, high grooming needs History of the Mini Labradoodle Miniature Labradoodles are a relatively new crossbreed. They are believed to have been bred in Australia in the s when a breeder made the first successful cross of a Labrador Retriever and a Mini Poodle. And so, a reputable breeder wanted to mix the Labrador Retriever with a breed having a non-shedding coat. The standard Poodle was the perfect candidate. Both standard Labradoodles and Miniature Labradoodles came along from this need. First, the standard Labradoodle came along. Standard Labradoodles were popular but much too big for some people. So then the Lab was mixed with the Mini Poodle to make a smaller pup. Generally needs .You should have a good decade or so before you have to worry about health problems related to aging. Some dogs may live longer or shorter lives depending on how healthy they are. Lifestyle management can help maximize the time you have with your dog. Be on the lookout for health issues potentially passed down from the parents. Size Miniature Labradoodles are meant to be smaller versions of the Labradoodle. The designer dog mixes the traits of Labrador Retrievers and Toy Poodles to make a smaller dog. Smaller individuals may be around 14 inches tall. That said, the exact size may depend on the characteristics of the parents. These dogs still come from a fairly big breed. Larger individuals may be closer to 24 inches tall. It can be difficult to determine how big a Mini Labradoodle puppy will get until they grow. Weight Smaller Mini Labradoodles may weigh around 10 pounds or more. Again, they may be bigger and heavier depending on the genes inherited from their Lab and Mini Poodle parents. Larger individuals may weigh up to 30 pounds. Coat The Mini Labradoodle is meant to have the Poodle coat, a low-shedding coat that is allergy-friendly. The coat type and color can vary from individual to individual based on the genes of the Poodle parent or Labrador parent. Some coats may have a wool texture, coming from their Poodle genes. These coats require a lot of grooming. Other coats may be a soft, fleece texture. It may be wavy or curly. Some individuals may also have a hairy, straight coat closer to that of Labrador Retrievers rather than a Poodle coat. Color Mini Labradoodles can come in many colors. They may also be single-colored or multi-colored. It depends on the genes they inherit from their very different-looking parents. Mini Labradoodle Temperament and Personality Mini Labradoodles are believed to be the perfect family pet and companion because of their family-friendly characteristics. They are great with kids and other animals and are all-around easy to get along with. That said, they can also be protective of their family. Miniature Labradoodles can get lonely easily, and they do not like being left alone for too long. Leaving them alone for eight hours or more a day may lead to depression, separation anxiety, and the destruction of your furniture. As adorable and friendly as they are, they may not be the best for families that are out of the house all day. As tempting as it can be, avoid overfeeding your Mini Labradoodle with high-fat treats, no matter how much they beg. Like their parent breed, the Labrador, they can get overweight if overfed. Also, keep their age in mind; puppies and senior dogs need different kibbles. Mini Labradoodles and any breed should be kept on a puppy-based kibble until they are a year old to ensure they get the nutrients needed to grow properly. Seniors, meanwhile, may need senior food that helps them get the most nutrients out of their food. As they age, some dogs have trouble getting the nutrients they need from normal kibble and lose weight at an alarming rate. Family Compatibility Mini Labradoodles are great family dogs because of their friendliness. They can get along great with families and other pets. These dogs are also very playful and love family interaction. You can potentially take your Mini Labradoodle on hikes, trips, or errands without too much trouble. Children should also be taught not to be too rough with them, no matter how easygoing they are. No jumping on them, pulling their tails or ears, or chewing on them. Even the gentlest dogs have limits. Mini Labradoodles can get lonely easily and even depressed if left alone for too long. That said, they can suffer from some health conditions passed down from their parent breeds. Some health concerns these dogs may be at risk of are hip dysplasia, obesity, and bloat. Hip dysplasia occurs when the hip develops incorrectly as a puppy, causing problems later on. It can cause pain and dysfunction as the dog grows. Over time it can cause problems like arthritis and mobility issues. Obesity is a common problem among Labradors that can be passed down to their Mini Labradoodle children. Therefore, avoiding high-calorie treats and overfeeding them too much is best. Obesity can cause a range of other health problems in the future, like arthritis or joint pain. This is a hereditary disease passed down from Labradoodle parents. Mini Labradoodle puppies are more susceptible if their parents had it. Do not breed your Mini Labradoodle for Mini Labradoodle puppies if they have this disease. Exercise-induced collapse occurs when a dog overexerts itself while exercising. This particular problem is more common among Mini Labradoodles, so keep an eye on them when running around. This can be life-threatening. While your Miniature Labradoodle is running around and exercising, watch for symptoms like a lack of coordination, muscle weakness, or other signs of exhaustion. Make sure they stop and take a break if they seem to be tiring themselves out. Owners should also be careful of diseases like hypothyroidism. In addition, you should clean their ears periodically to avoid ear infections. Mini Labradoodles need consistent grooming and coat care to keep their fur from matting and getting messy. They need to be groomed multiple times a week, at the least. Daily brushing is recommended if possible. These dogs are incredibly active, coming from two very active breeds. They need a good minutes of exercise a day. They enjoy running and need to be able to burn off all that energy. Mini Labradoodle Training The Miniature Labradoodle is considered very easy to train, even for new dog owners. When all else fails, you can pull out a bag of dog treats to get their attention. You should start training early to avoid behavior problems later on. Keep a bag of low-calorie treats handy during the early days of training. Praise good behavior with a treat as soon as it shows desirable behavior. If your Miniature Labradoodle does something wrong, do not lash out at them, as it may worsen things. Punishments like hitting may lead to fear or aggression that would not have existed without it. Instead, redirect them to the right behavior and then reward them. These little guys can be stubborn and set in their ways if you wait too long. They love their humans, but they can also be a bit protective of them. Teaching your Mini Labradoodle puppy early on that other people and animals are safe is a good way to avoid any future problems like growling or lashing out at strangers. Trust me; you do not want to wait until your dog starts getting nervous about new people and animals to start socializing them. Once they start getting antisocial, it gets harder to mingle them. So go ahead and start taking them out and letting strangers give them treats and pets. Do Mini Labradoodles Bark a Lot? Miniature Labradoodles are not known for barking a lot. Depending on the individual, they may occasionally bark at the door or bark while playing. This breed is generally seen as a moderate barker. Any excessive barking can usually be addressed through positive training by rewarding quiet behavior. They may get into trouble and chew things up out of frustration or just get depressed to the point of illness. Never leave a young Mini Labradoodle puppy alone. They may get into something and get themselves hurt. Is the Mini Labradoodle Hypoallergenic? The non-shedding coat of the Miniature Labradoodle is more allergy-friendly than most. They can also be a good choice for those with concerns about allergies. These small to medium designer dogs are intelligent, loyal, and love pleasing their humans, much like their parent breeds. Mini Labradoodles also require consistent attention and will get lonely if you leave them alone for too long. Make sure you have the means to care for any dog you decide to get. The characteristics that the Labradoodle inherits are through the dominant genes or a cross between certain characters of the parent breed. When it comes to the color of the coat, there are two pigments that play a key role — phaeomelanin and eumelanin. Eumelanin is responsible for the black color and pheomelanin is responsible for the red color. When these two pigment genes interact with other pigment genes, it changes these basic black and red colors into different shades. One of these other genes is the S gene, also called the spotting gene or the self gene. The S gene is a dominant gene, so even if the puppy inherits it from one parent, it will still develop a snowy white coat. And since Labradors do not have an S gene, if the Labradoodle puppy is white, that means it inherited the color from its Poodle parent. A white coat is essentially the result of a lack of melanin or pigment in the Labradoodle. However, white Labradoodles still have pigment in their nose and eyes, which is what distinguishes them from a dog with albinism. Most of the time a cross between a light-colored Labrador Retriever with a white, cream , or yellow coat and a lighter-colored Poodle with a white, silver, apricot, or gray coat results in a white-colored Labradoodle. Albinism Albinism is a genetic condition that affects pigment production. A dog with albinism will have absolutely no pigment production and thus no color or white color on their skin and fur. Albino Labradoodles will have a pink nose, paws, and lips. Even the skin surrounding the eyes is pink. If you suspect the white coat of your dog is because of the albino gene, you can get your genetically tested. However, albinism is quite rare. So, if your Labradoodle has a white coat, it is most likely due to the S gene and not albinism. Alternatively, a dog may appear to be albino because of significant coat color dilution, and some breeds only have parts of their bodies affected by the albino gene such as the Doberman. Dilute Gene There are often instances where a Labradoodle may appear white, but it is not. This happens due to the presence of dilute genes. The dilute gene will dilute a pigment and make the color paler, especially with lighter colors. So, a yellow, cream, or apricot coat combined with a dilute gene will appear white. One example of a dilute gene is the Champagne Labrador. Labradoodles with the dilute gene may have beautiful coat colors, but it also makes them more prone to health conditions like alopecia. The G gene is dominant, so inheriting it from either of its parent breeds is enough for the expression of the gene. This may result in graying or whitening in the case of light-colored coats of the coats. Thus, a light-colored Labradoodle with the G gene may develop a white coat early in life. Health Problems Apart from genetics, there are other factors that can determine the coat color of your dog. Here are the two major health concerns that can cause your Labradoodle to have a white coat. Vitiligo Vitiligo is a skin disease that can affect many dog breeds. It is typically hereditary and affects the pigment in the skin. The disease starts at an early age, just after puppyhood. The dog starts losing color from the face first, followed by loss of color in other areas of the body. There is a higher risk of a Labradoodle inheriting this disease if the Labrador Retriever parent has a yellow coat. Systemic Stress or Anxiety While Labradoodles are highly intelligent and social animals, like all other dog breeds, they are also prone to stress and anxiety. And although stress is unlikely to cause a change in coat color, it can impact the health and shine of the coat. Are White Labradoodles Healthy? Usually, there is no correlation between the coat color of a dog and its health. A running white Labradoodle For white Labradoodles, whether their white coat is genetically inherited or is the result of a health condition will determine their overall health. One of the most common genetic health problems of white dogs is albinism, which also includes several complications. Albino dogs thus need extra care and protection. If your white Labrador has albinism, he will not be able to tolerate the hot rays of the sun and will have to be protected. These tumors can remain benign or develop into cancerous cells. The absence of pigment in the eyes also makes their eyes more sensitive. Studies have also shown that albino dogs are at a higher risk of developing deafness and other hearing-related health problems. White Labradoodles may also develop partial or complete deafness because of lack of pigmentation, but this is quite rare. Labradoodles, and any other dog breed, with a darker shade of coat are known to lose their colors because of genetic or health-related issues. Labradoodle hair regrows fairly quickly, give it 8 weeks and you will be back to fluffy. With dogs with darker coats, there is always the risk of the puppy developing a lighter shade as it grows up. However, dogs with lighter coats are not susceptible to such changes. The temperament of a Labradoodle will be a reflection of how the puppy is raised, socialized, and treated and not the color of his coat. F3 Labradoodle [Complete Guide] with Photos Since it is a crossbreed, the characteristics of the parent breeds also play a very important role in the temperament of the dog. Apart from a few quirks inherited from the parent breeds, Labradoodles are generally affectionate, lovely, and friendly. They usually do not display aggressive tendencies and are friendly and warm to strangers, children, and other dogs. It thus becomes very important to choose a good responsible and ethical breeder to get your pet from. Meeting the parent dogs gives you further insight into the temperament that the puppy may develop. Training A White Labradoodle Labradoodles are an enthusiastic, playful, and energetic dog breed. They are eager to please their humans and smother them with love and affection. However, it is important to start training Labradoodles from an early age to ensure the development of positive characteristics. A white Labradoodle with tongue out after rigorous training! Owning a Labradoodle also involves daily exercising as this breed has high energy levels and requires at least minutes of exercise every day. Without regular exercise, your Labradoodle may develop aggressive behavior, which can lead to further behavioral issues. Exercise and training are a must for any dog, and especially for highly energetic dog breeds like the Labradoodle. Early socialization and positive reinforcement are some of the best ways to train a Labradoodle puppy to ensure good behavior and a balanced temperament. Most Labradoodles need to be groomed every weeks. Usually, this is enough to keep the tangles and knots away and preserve the natural shine and gloss of their coats. Dog grooming tools for your dog. However, with a white coat, the grooming requirement changes. The white wavy and curly coat will require regular bathing and brushing, more often than other colored coats. This is also because the white coat is more easily stained and even a small patch of mud will look very unpleasant. Other than that, hair clipping every weeks is also a must. You should also consider taking your dog to a professional groomer every few months. Owning any dog comes with its set of responsibilities and expenses, and owning a Labradoodle is no different. White Labradoodle sits in the garden with its tongue out. Labradoodles need to be regularly groomed and require plenty of exercises, along with a healthy nutritious diet and proper training. White Labradoodles also have certain specific health concerns that you will need to be prepared to handle. If you are someone who stays away from home too often, owning a white Labradoodle may not be a good decision for you. Many breeders provide Labradoodle puppies but not all follow ethical breeding practices. Make sure you avoid puppy mills and backyard breeders at all costs; they are in it only for monetary gains and breed for quantity and not quality. A panting white Labradoodle rests after an intense play at the park! When buying a white Labradoodle from a breeder , research the breeder properly. Make sure they follow ethical breeding practices, are registered with a Labradoodle organization, and are experienced with the breed. Some of the Labradoodle organizations to look for are: Australian Labradoodle Association of America Worldwide Australian Labradoodle Association Australian Labradoodle Club of America These organizations make sure the breeders follow ethical breeding practices and that the parent dogs used in the breeding programs are of sound health. You can ask the breeder for genetic coat testing of the parent dogs to determine the possibility of having a white-colored puppy. And remember that the S gene comes from the Poodle parent. So, there is a higher chance of a white Labradoodle if the Poodle parent had a white coat rather than the Labrador Retriever parent. However, even with genetic testing, there is still no guarantee of a white Labradoodle. But, you can have your name on the wishlist of breeders so that whenever a white Labradoodle comes along, you will be contacted. Conclusion White Labradoodles are rare but an absolute joy to have around. However, like any other dog, owning a white Labradoodle is a big responsibility. A white Labradoodle is a Labrador Retriever and Poodle mix dog, with a white coat. White Labradoodles always inherit their snowy coat purely from their Poodle parent. Besides their color, a white Labradoodle is not distinct from other Labradoodles. Choosing a White Labradoodle Have you been thinking about adding a white Labradoodle to your home? Labradoodles are beautiful and popular dogs. There are more than 15 different coat colors possible for a Labradoodle! So read on and find out if the white Labradoodle is the dog for you. What is a White Labradoodle? This term refers to when two breeds combine to accentuate the best traits in both breeds. The Labradoodle stemmed from the need for an allergy-friendly guide dog. Labrador Retrievers, on the other hand, make perfect guide dogs. But their fur sheds and holds dander that aggravates allergies. That makes it difficult for anyone who has allergies in their household. In the s, breeders combined Poodles and Labrador Retrievers to solve this problem. This resulted in the Labradoodle that we know today, and are still popular as guide dogs and therapy dogs. But that is unlikely, as albinism is very rare in both pets and people. All color found on dogs comes from two different pigments. As dogs grow, cells called melanocytes add these two melanins to their hair. There is still pigmentation in the nose and they eyes, but none in the fur. Pigmentation in the eyes and nose is what officially qualifies white Labradoodles according to the ALAA. This pigmentation also sets white Labradoodles apart from dogs with albinism. Albinism is the complete lack of pigmentation. White Poodles get their color or lack of it from the S gene. Labradors do not carry the S gene. Although very occasionally they might have small areas of the white trim in their coat. So, white Labradoodles always inherit their color from their Poodle parent. White Labradoodle Temperament It can be difficult to pinpoint the personality of a mixed breed dog. Both breeds are known as family-friendly dogs. Labradoodles can be high-energy and friendly. How friendly they are will depend on whether they take after the Poodle or Labrador parent more. Poodles seem to be a bit more aloof, whereas Labradors are often extremely friendly. You can help temperament with proper socialization, adequate exercise and lots of attention. White Labradoodle Health Every breed of dog will have their own health risks. Many issues that could arise are genetic. DNA tests are available for this gene, and it takes two faulty genes to pass the disorder along. Good breeders will have their dogs tested to avoid breeding two carriers together. Sebaceous Adenitis Sebaceous glands can become inflamed, affecting skin and hair follicle lubrication. This results in itchy skin, scaling, hair loss and even infection. At present, there is no DNA test. But you should talk to your breeder about whether they have seen it in the lineage. Epilepsy Poodles can suffer from idiopathic epilepsy, which is inherited. Here are some of the health concerns that they share. Some cases are mild, requiring only proper diet and exercise to maintain. Whereas, other cases are more severe, and may even need surgery to help. Bloat Sometimes with large dogs, their stomachs can grow too large with gas and rotate. This hinders their ability to release the gas. And also restricts blood supply. If this happens, it is life-threatening and an emergency vet visit is necessary. Progressive Retinal Atrophy This is a genetic disease that almost always leads to blindness. Luckily, a DNA test can identify this. Good breeders should be able to provide proof of testing for the parents. But one study suggests that it depends on the disease more than the pedigree. Labrador Health Issues The only major concern outside what Labradors share with Poodles is their risk of cancer. While Labradors are not the highest at-risk breed for cancer, the issue is still there. But with early detection, it could be manageable. If a dog lacks these melanocytes, it will also lack the proper hearing cells. This will result in a high chance of congenital deafness. This makes your White Labradoodle more susceptible to poor eyesight than other colors. Their white coat also means they likely have sensitive skin. Their time in the sun should be closely monitored. Labradors are shedding dogs, so your Labradoodle may leave lots of hair around. Their fur is thick, coarse and double-layered. They have a water-resistant outer layer and an insulating undercoat. They have a single layer coat. It could have the thick, curly wool-like fur of a Poodle. They may also have loose or no curls, with a lot more shedding. Labradoodle Coat Care You will need to brush your Labradoodle once or twice weekly. This may even mean daily brushing. They will need regular clipping to keep the coat from matting. A fine-tooth comb, brush, and detangling spray will help you care for them. White Labradoodle Coat Care As with most things, white means even more maintenance. White fur may mean your dog has sensitive skin. Choose a gentle shampoo, and keep full baths to a minimum. If your white Labradoodle gets dirty, wait until the dirt is dry and brush it out. You can also use cleaning cloths to remove stains. Pay special attention to areas prone to staining: around the eyes and mouth. Selecting a Reputable Breeder Lastly, regardless of coat color or breed, you should always look for a reputable breeder. Good breeders work towards the betterment of the species and the breed. They take important qualities such as health, temperament and more into account. These breeders are looking for quick money. So they take advantage of the popularity of designer breeds like Labradoodles. They do this by over-breeding dogs. That means the temperament of a Labradoodle from a backyard breeder can vary wildly. Properly bred Labradoodles are a little easier to predict. A white Labradoodle puppy may not be the most low maintenance dog that you can find. But there is a reason that this breed is so loved. Will you talk with your breeder about possible health concerns? Are willing to work a little harder with their coat? Then a white Labradoodle could be the perfect dog for you! Do you already have a white Labradoodle at home? Or are you still deciding whether or not to take one home? Readers Also Liked. Life Span Did You Know? Second-generation crosses could include a Labradoodle and a Mini Poodle or two Mini Labradoodles as parents. This hybrid dog breed was originally developed to create smaller potential service dogs that might be a good fit for people with allergies to dog fur. With a mixed breed, you can end up with any combination of traits from the parent breeds. Often, Mini Labradoodles are smart, friendly, and sociable dogs that are highly trainable. They are often found working as service dogs and therapy dogs and living as beloved family companions. Although they are not recognized by the AKC, the Mini Labradoodle is recognized by other canine registries. A Mini Labradoodle is a combination of two friendly dog breeds that crave human affection and are always happy to have company. These dogs also tend to have playful, energetic personalities and low prey drives. Well-socialized Mini Labradoodles tend to get along well with children, other dogs, and other pets. Due to their smaller size, these dogs can be injured by accidental rough play or accidental falls, so any interactions between young kids and puppies should be closely supervised. Miniature Labradoodles will usually bark to alert you when someone is at the door, but generally are not prone to nuisance barking unless they have been trained into it. It may not be a bad idea to train your dog to stop barking early on. Well-socialized Mini Labradoodles may be initially wary of strangers, but tend to warm up quickly and will often be happy to make a new friend. Miniature Labradoodles are highly adaptable. Provided they get enough exercise, attention, and mental stimulation, they can adapt well to apartments as well as larger homes. They tend to do best in moderate climates, but can tolerate warmer or colder climates. As with any dog, they are sensitive to heat. Although they tend to have a fluffier coat, they are also smaller and may need to bundle up in some winter dog products to stay warm while out on walks in the cold. Mini Labradoodles are also very much companion breeds. They bond closely with their families and thrive on being near them, so they do not like to be left alone for long periods of time. The health of the parents and good breeding practices make a big difference in the health of Mini Labradoodle puppies. Reputable breeders will screen their dogs to avoid passing preventable issues to puppies. Make sure you are asking the breeder about the health and genetic history of both parents. You can also ask about any health tests or clearances that have been done to help allay any concerns you may have. Miniature Labradoodles tend to be highly intelligent and eager to please. This generally makes them easy to train and a good fit for owners of all experience levels. In fact, their parent breeds are considered some of the best dog breeds for first-time owners. These dogs respond best to consistent training and positive reinforcement. Puppy training classes can ensure that owners of any experience level learn the latest training techniques and start building a strong bond with their puppy. Grooming requirements with a Mini Labradoodle can vary. On the Poodle side, you have a low-shedding, but high-maintenance, coat that needs daily brushing along with trimming and grooming every weeks. On the Lab side, you have a higher shedding coat that is more low-maintenance, requiring some weekly brushing or brushing a few times a week and intermittent bathing. Overall, Mini Labradoodles range from having a non- to low-shedding coat. They can have one coat type or the other, or a combination of both of them. So, you will want to be prepared for brushing a coat a few times a week and the possibility of more grooming needs. Regardless of coat type, there are some other general grooming tasks you can count on. Regular dental care for your dog will help prevent serious dental issues like gum disease and tooth decay later in life. This is especially important for dog breeds with floppy ears as they are more prone to developing ear infections. Miniature Labradoodles can be high-energy dogs. In general, they require daily walks plus some playtime and extra activity to be happy and healthy. Since they love to be around their family and can have an exuberant and outgoing personality, they will likely be up for more playtime if you are. This little dog may get tired more easily at times and could push themselves too far in their excitement. On the other hand, they may just keep going and going with no signs of slowing down. What is most important is making sure your Miniature Labradoodle gets enough exercise and mental stimulation. Fully-grown Mini Labradoodles usually stand inches tall and weigh pounds. We have had Clementine Callie for four months now, and she is a wonderful dog. Her personality is amazing, and I think part of it is breeding and the other part is Erika and her family lovingly raising the puppies in their home with plenty of attention and snuggles. I also was impressed that, rather than send the puppies out right at 8 weeks, Erika kept ours for a few extra weeks because she was tiny and not read to leave her mom yet. It's that care that differentiates Bruisers from other breeders. Emily R. Erica was easy to work with thru the entire process from application to adopting and now beyond as we host our new family member, Chief. Her on-call support and willingness to provide open, honest advice to all of our questions and concerns continues to be appreciated. We would highly recommend Bruiser Bulldogs to anyone looking for an English Bulldog to join their family. Elizabeth W. Lady L. They are experienced, responsive and knowledgeable about all things bulldog related. They went above and beyond for us and are truly dedicated to all of their pups! We love our little girl so much and would recommend Bruiser to anyone looking for a healthy beautiful bully. Jonathan E. Erica and Mitch are trustworthy, excellent communicators, fair, passionate, and produce the best bulldogs. We were at the top of the waiting list for months and Erica reached out every litter to see if we were finally ready for a bulldog. When we were, she was very easy to work with. Her knowledge on bulldogs is outstanding. We had many questions on the process and she always knew what was best for the puppy. We've had Penny formerly Blair for two months and she is very healthy, energetic, playful, and sweet. She is great with other people and dogs. We are so happy with our pup. When we are ready for bulldog 2, we will only consider Bruiser Bulldogs. Mitch C. Bowser was born April and is an integral part of our family. When we were first exploring English Bulldog breeders our biggest concern was the overall health of the dogs. We decided to work with Erica at Bruiser Bulldogs because we liked their focus on improving the breeds breathing abilities and the fact that the puppies are raised within her family environment before coming home with their new owners. Bowser also breaths clearly and our vet was impressed with his overall health from the moment we brought him home. All that said we know English Bulldogs have a predisposition to many health issues and that his current health can not predict the future. With that In mind its important to start with a breeder that open to answer any of your questions as Erica has ours, and that strongly believes in improving the breeds overall health profile. Adam B. My sister ended up finding Bruiser Bulldogs and we knew right away that they were the breeder for us. In September we ended up driving 9 hours to pick up two Bruiser bulldog puppies- one for my husband and I and one for my mom. Jackson and Penelope have been nothing but a joy. They are both very athletic and healthy. They are also HUGE snugglers and always want to be with you. It is an absolute pleasure having these two bullies in our lives! Erica is very knowledgeable about the breed. She is very hands on throughout the process and is just overall a kind and honest person to work with. With all that being said I cannot recommend Bruiser Bulldogs enough! Collyn C. One of the reasons we chose Bruiser Bulldogs was due to the claims about breeding for health. During our first visit at our vet's office, he told us that our pup was one of the healthiest English bulldogs he had ever seen. He is healthy, happy and social. Would recommend to anyone. Christina S. We seen our dog on their website and sent them an Email. Mitch called us and personally walked us through the process and made sure we had the right dog for our family. We couldn't be happier when we picked up our dog Ramsey, Erica made sure we had everything we needed and then some. They are truly amazing people who breed truly amazing dogs! Jim T. UKC Classification: Companion Dog Prevalence: Common The English bulldog is a brawny little powerhouse whose characteristic crablike waddle exudes great strength, stability and vigor. The dog's head is large and spherical, and the muzzle is extremely short, giving the face a flattened appearance. The English bulldog's eyes are dark and set low and wide on the forehead in the frontal plane. The nose is black and slightly upturned. The jaws or "chops" are massive, broad and undershot. The lower jaw juts out in front of the upper jaw to scarcely expose the lower incisors, producing a comical grin. The lips are fleshy and pendulous. The cheeks are well rounded and protrude sideways. The ears are thin, small and angle forward like flaps that frame the forehead. The English bulldog's neck is short and thick; the shoulders are massive, muscular and broad. The chest is deep and full, and the back is barreled and slightly arched. His rounded hips protrude slightly above the level of the back. The stubby tail is thick and either straight or screwed. His short, stocky legs have great muscle definition. They are splayed out and slightly bowed at the elbows and hocks to form a sturdy, base-wide stance. The English bulldog stands about 16 inches tall. The female weighs about 50 pounds 23 kilograms , and the male weighs about 54 pounds 24 kilograms. The English bulldog's skin is loose and pendant with heavy wrinkles and thick folds on the face and a dewlap hanging from the throat. The coat is short and fine textured. The various color patterns are brindle, piebald, and solid white, red, fawn or fallow. Personality: The English bulldog has a sweet, gentle disposition. Dependable and predictable, the bulldog is a wonderful family pet and loving to most children. People-oriented as a breed, they actively solicit human attention. However, they have retained the courage that was originally bred into them for bull baiting, so they make fine watchdogs. Although they generally get along well with other family pets, English bulldogs can be aggressive to unfamiliar dogs. Living With: English bulldogs make fine apartment pets and do not require a yard. Typically low-endurance dogs, they need only a moderate amount of exercise. They thrive best in temperate climates; they readily overheat and have breathing difficulties in hot weather, and they chill easily in cold temperatures. Generally loud breathers, English bulldogs tend to snore and wheeze. Many drool as well. They are moderate shedders and their short coats require little grooming. However, the wrinkles on the face should be wiped regularly to prevent skin infections. History: Named for its use in the sport of bull baiting, the English bulldog seems to have originated in the British Isles sometime prior to the 13th century. One of the few references to the sport dates back to , and talks about a butcher's dogs that chased a bull through the English town of Stamford. This pursuit so pleased the earl of the town that he inaugurated bull baiting as a sport in his domain. Today, the English bulldog makes a fine family pet. The AKC recognizes the breed simply as the bulldog. Related Pet Care Articles. The coat colors of English bulldogs can be matched and mixed into various combinations like tri-color and Piebald. However, there are eight standard colors: seal, chocolate, blue, black, lilac, white, fawn, and brindle. You can usually see the solid body color in tan, red, or fawn points, meaning around eyebrows and feet. A genetic test is conducted to determine whether the English bulldogs are certain combinations and colors, even if they are not visible. What is the Rarest Color of English Bulldog? Today, the rarest color for English bulldogs is the Merle. Many pet lovers find them unique because of their strange coat color. Their fur comes with different markings, usually in black or dark brown, fawn, cream, or white mixed with other darker hues. You may also encounter other rare colors, such as lilac, blue, chocolate, and black. With color combinations, tri-color English bulldogs are produced. What is the Best Color for an English Bulldog? The color coat of the English bulldogs should be pure of its kind, uniform, and brilliants. The preferred coat colors for these bullies include piebald, solid white, brindle, red brindle, solid fallow, fawn, or red. The ideal Piebald must have a defective solid color or muddy brindle. The color patches should be of pure color, well-defined, and symmetrically distributed. In order for the brindle to be perfect, it should have an equal, even, and fine distribution of composite colors. What is the Original Color of an English Bulldog? For sure, you will be surprised knowing that chocolate was the original color of an English bulldog. With so many coat colors today, no one might think that chocolate was the original one. However, it is still possible since many years of breeding had passed, and it is natural to expect those coat color changes. Some interested pet lovers often look for either the rarest or most popular color of English bulldogs. When it comes to popularity, the white and fawn English bulldog is the most popular. The second place goes to red and white bullies, followed by the brindle English bulldogs. However, never let their jowly faces deceive you. This breed is actually loving, gentle, and super mushy. English bulldogs were developed in the 13th century in the UK. Today, they are the fourth most popular breed in the US. They may look stocky, but these small dogs are very affectionate. Tri-patterned bullies often come with points of a third color, particularly in golden brown or fawn. You will see this pattern on their cheeks, chest, inner front chest, and above their eyes. Seal Color Bulldog English bulldogs with seal coats are very rare to find. However, this English bulldog variety does exist. These bullies come with a distinct brownish or reddish cast on the coat with a dark stripe down the back. They also have lighter-colored eyes. Chocolate Color Bulldog Every chocolate lover will get attracted to English bulldogs with chocolate fur. Their color are another rare kind for this breed. They have that stunning hue because of the bb genotype. Their eyeliner, pads, and nose can be a silver or a brown shade, while their coats are deep brown in color. Blue Color Bulldog If you see these bullies for the first time, you might get confused about whether their color is blue or gray. They are simply black ones that have been diluted in color through the dd genotype. If these bulldogs are against darker-colored items or in the sun, their coat will appear gray. Then, their eyeliner, pads, and nose are slate gray. Black Color Bulldog The black coat is very common to most breeds. However, having this coat color is very rare for English bulldogs. The black coat of English bullies is shiny with a fawn undercoat. Their nose, pads, and eyeliner are a true black hue. Lilac Color Bulldog Another rare coat found in English bulldogs is the lilac. Bullies with lilac coats have their color diluted twice. The first one is from black to brown, and the other one is from black to blue. The beautiful purplish-gray color is like a result of combining brown and blue hues. Their eyeliner, pads, and nose will have some purple shade. In other words, piebald bullies have two various colors on their coats. White Color Bulldog If you are looking for a coveted coat color for English bulldogs, then you will find white bullies interesting. These bulldogs come with pure white color, from tail to tip. In most cases, these bullies have no markings on any part of their bodies. On the other hand, you will notice that some freckles in different hues may be present. Fallow or Fawn Color Bulldog Fawn are popular colors you often see in furnishings or clothing. However, this color is also popular among dogs, particularly English bulldogs. They have light tannish yellow coat color with various shades, from pale tan to deep deer-red. Brindle Color Bulldog If there is one signature look for English bulldogs, it would be the brindle. When most people imagine a bulldog, this traditional coat pattern will immediately come to their minds. English bulldogs with brindle coats come with a striped pattern combined with a different colored base. In addition, their tiger-Esque stripes deliver a defined and unique appearance. Some lilac sables are darker than others. These bullies have gorgeous champagne coat colors. Their eyes are glowing aqua blue, but some of them have ice green or ice blue. These beautiful bullies have silver coats combined with a tan point on their eyes, chest, and legs, just like the Doberman. They often have green or blue eyes. Blue Sable Color Bulldog Blue sable English bulldogs are red-based dogs with a silver cast on their coat. These English bullies have faint tri markings on their faces, chest, and legs. Merle Color Bulldog Merle coat color is the newest in the English bulldogs. They look like Aussie with totally ice blue eyes. These English bullies come on black tri, blue tri, and chocolate tri. Some of them come with darker coat than other. The topcoat is often darker, while the undercoat is blue. Since these dogs have a solid base color with patches, their coat comes with an uneven speckled or mottled effect. The black tri bullies have true black eyeliner, pads, and nose. Besides the black color, tan color is also noticeable, particularly on their legs, chest, and face. They have brown eyes. In some instances, their tan points are combined with brindle. Do English Bulldogs make good pets? English bulldogs are part of the bully breed family. They are bigger than the French bulldogs and non-sporting canines. Historically, they were bred for bull-baiting, which involves forcing them to taunt and bite bulls. Today, these bulldogs are bred to be generally more playful, gentler, and kinder. Size Once English bulldogs reached their adult stage, their size range from 14 to 15 inches tall. In terms of weight, they can be as heavy as pounds. The males are bigger than the females, approximately 10 pounds. Build Since English bulldogs have a specialized breeding history, they are dense and muscular. These bulldogs are also a dysplastic breed, so they have shallower hip sockets than other dogs. As a result, their femur only firs into their hip socket loosely, resulting in potential joint and bone issues. Distinct Features English bulldogs are notable for their short, glossy coats in different colors. These bulldogs come with furrowed browns and small, floppy ears. Their loose skin hangs on their jowls. Plus, their bulldog snout is also notable, and little noses smash right up into their faces. Training Expect the early training to be challenging because of their stubborn character. You need to be consistent and firm. Beware that these dogs are prone to breathing issues. They also overheat quickly. That is why training them to ingest ice is helpful. Companion Level With English bulldogs, you will have beautiful companions. These bullies are great with kids, so you have no problem introducing them to young children at home. Their calm demeanor and sturdy build make them great troopers in terms of rough petting or strong kids grip. These bulldogs are also famous for being loyal lovers, and they enjoy the company. On the other hand, ensure to train these bullies not to bite people. If kids startle them, their first reaction is to snip. With regard to other pets, these bullies are ready to play and mingle with them. If they are with same-gender dog playmates, they tend to be more aggressive. This means two makes cause some issues if they are in one household. Feeding When feeding English bulldogs, just give them enough to keep their thick build. Since they easily develop the risk of becoming overweight, overdoing the feeding is not advisable. After mealtime, they drool excessively. So, take care of that. Activity Level Regular exercise is critical to these bulldogs since they pack on the pounds quickly. A tug of war or a brisk walk is an excellent exercise for them. However, you have to be observant when it comes to water, stains, and heat. Overheating is dangerous for bulldogs since high temperatures fail to mix well with their short snout. These dogs can swim, but they are vulnerable to drowning because water easily gets into their nose. Grooming English bulldogs shed big time. So, brushing them one to three times a week is recommended. You may notice that their faces have skin piling up into folds, and this causes skin ailments once moisture or dirt gets caught in those wrinkles. Ensure to be observant when it comes to red, itchy skin. You should clean between those folds regularly. Conclusion There you have it! Do you find this post helpful? Upkeep The Bulldog appreciates a daily outing but cannot tolerate hot humid weather, which can be deadly. He should not be expected to jog or walk great distances, or to jump from any heights. Special precautions must be taken when anesthetizing a Bulldog. Caesarean deliveries are commonly needed. Hip radiographs show most Bulldogs to be dysplastic but few show overt symptoms. History With the most distinctive mug in dogdom, the Bulldog has an equally distinctive history. Some Bulldogs were also set against bears for bear baiting, purely for entertainment. In , bull baiting was outlawed, and a new phase began for the Bulldog. By all rights, the breed should have become extinct, except that it had gained so many ardent admirers that they set out to rescue the Bulldog by selecting against ferocity while still maintaining—and often accentuating—its distinctive physical characteristics. Its tough steadfast persona led it to be identified as a national symbol of England. Its amiable clownish personality belies its appearance, and the Bulldog is a popular pet. Related Content.
