golden retriever puppies for 100 dollars
Please be patient. We get hundreds of applications and can't respond to everyone. Your donations pay for expenses to foster doodles, buy pet food, cover veterinary costs, and transportation. We adopt doodles to families that will keep them as inside pets and treat them as family members. We do not adopt to families who are specifically looking for a doodle to train as a service dog. Since the majority of rescue dogs do not meet service dog requirements, this is an unfair expectation of our doodles. We also do not adopt doodles to be given as gifts. We do not permit commercial transport of our dogs, and all adopters are required to personally take their new family member home. If you adopt a doodle from us, it is important to note that rescue dogs typically require leash and other training. Your doodle may keep you up nights, have potty accidents, and other inconveniences for the first couple of weeks. We can't possibly know everything about the health or behavior of any dog in our care. You bear the responsibility of choosing to adopt your dog. If for any reason you are unable to keep your doodle, you are required to contact the California Doodle Rescue. If you are found to be a possible match for one of our doodles, you will be contacted directly by someone from California Doodle Rescue. If contacted, please be prepared for a required phone interview, contacting your references, and or veterinarian checks. Part of our adoption process requires an in-person meet and greet between the doodle and the entire household, including pets of the potential adopting family. If a home visit is not possible, you may be asked to send photos of your home and yard. The breed is gaining wide popularity in Australia and North America due to their sweet, affectionate nature. As with any hybrid breed, their appearance will vary depending on the characteristics of the breeding pair. They have broad, round skulls, long muzzles, and oval-shaped eyes that are most often brown but more rarely can be blue or green. Their bodies are long, muscular, and well-built. Their coats vary widely and can be flat and straight like the Retriever, wavy, or even very curly like the Poodle. As a Poodle mix, they are considered hypoallergenic and could be a good choice for those who suffer from allergies. Goldendoodles are affectionate, attentive, and good with other dogs and children, making them an ideal addition to your family. In fact, they want to be with you at all times. They are happy, active and energetic. They will thrive with families who are committed to being active, walking daily, playing fetch and flyball, and even swimming. Their intelligence makes the courses. Their coats require regular brushing and trimming to prevent mats. Goldendoodles adapt well to both rural and urban environments provided that exercise is prioritized and they have enough room to run and play. We match families with the puppy that we feel will be the best fit for them. From the time you fill out your puppy application to when you take your puppy home, we are with you every step of the way. After your puppy goes home, we provide a variety of resources for you to keep in touch, including our Owners Facebook Page. We invite all of our puppy owners to our Annual Doodle Romp each year, and of course we are always available to answer questions along the way. To assist you in filling out the application, we recommend browsing through the "Our Puppies" section of our website to understand the Goldendoodle breed in general, and the different colors , generations , and sizes of puppies we offer. Be sure to check out the McDifference page to see what sets us apart. Phone Interview Upon receipt of your application, we will call you to discuss your preferences and our upcoming litters. We do our best to give you an approximate timeframe. We talk about your needs as far as temperament, look, and any allergies in-depth so that we have an idea how to steer you in the right direction when it comes to selecting a puppy. We take notes during this interview so that we have them to refer back to throughout the process. Deposits can be made on our Pricing and Deposits page. The balance is due when your puppy is 4 weeks old. It is not our policy to refund deposits. Waiting List After your deposit is received, you are placed on our waiting list. As litters are bred or if we have extra spots after a litter is born, we contact the next families on the list that match the litter preferences. If the timing does not work for you or you cannot take a puppy from this litter, your name goes back on the top of the list, and you will be contacted for the next or future litter. After the Puppies are Born Puppy Collars The first thing we do after the puppies are born is to place a collar on them. The puppies wear different color collars, and this is how we track their weights two times a day, how our Vet keeps track of them and how you can track them from week to week in the pictures. Puppy Announcement and Weekly Updates After the puppies are born, we send a birth announcement via email to each family on the list with the litter specifics and pictures. We send pictures and updates every week, so you can watch them grow. Matching Puppies with Families Matching puppies with families is an integral part of our process, and we feel is one of the most significant things that sets us apart. Many breeders allow families to select their puppy in order of deposit, but we feel that we are serving each family and each puppy much better by selecting based on "best fit. Choose Your Favorites The first step in our selection process is to get your opinion based purely on the look of the puppies. After we send the 6-week pictures, we ask everyone on the list for their favorites, based solely on the look of the puppies. This test uses a scoring system and consists of ten individual tests. Each test is scored separately, and interpreted on its own merits. The scores are not averaged, and there are no winners or losers. The entire purpose is to select the right puppy for the right home. For more information on this test, visit the volhard. Our Recommendation Using the results of the Volhard Test, along with your puppy application, phone interview, and your favorites, we match you with the puppy that we feel is the best fit for your family and lifestyle. Your New Family Member! Once the testing is complete, we call everyone on the waiting list to go over their scores and discuss our recommendation of which of your favorites we think is the best fit. After this conversation, you have a puppy to call your own! Visiting Your New Puppy After the selection process is complete, you are welcome to visit your new puppy. The puppies are 6 weeks old by this time, and will have had their first set of vaccinations. When visiting your puppy, we request that you do not visit any other kennels, pet stores, breeders, or places where there could be unvaccinated dogs during the same day. We will ask that you take your shoes off at the door and use hand sanitizer. We will also ask that all kids sit on the floor when holding and playing with the puppies. Taking Home Your Puppy At eight weeks, you will be invited to take your puppy home. We will assign a time for your pickup so that we can spend some uninterupted time with you going over things we think you should know and answering any questions you may have. The drive home When you pick up your puppy, we recommend bringing someone with you who can hold the puppy on their lap for the drive home. Your puppy will be unfamiliar in his new surroundings, and without his siblings. Holding the puppy on your lap on an old bath towel will keep your puppy feeling safe and happy and start him off in the best possible way to his new life. Avoid High Traffic Areas On the way home, please remember that your puppy is vulnerable because he has not yet completed his vaccines. Avoid stopping at "high traffic" dog areas, like rest stops, on your journey home. Instead try stopping at restaurants, where people with dogs in the car are less likely to stop. By avoiding areas where other dogs have been walked, you greatly reduce the chances of your puppy picking up any germs left behind. If you have to stop at a rest area, please carry your puppy to a more secluded spot, and you might even want to put your puppy on a puppy pad rather than on the grass - or for the most secure solution, simply put them in a crate lined with a puppy pad. In general, your puppy should be able to make at least a two hour trip without stopping. Visiting the Vet When you go to your Vet, carry your puppy in and place it on the table; don't let it walk across the floor where a sick dog could have been. Until your puppy has had its last set of puppy vaccines, 16 weeks, you need to treat it like it has no immune system and avoid high risk situations such as parks and pet stores. Preparing for Your New Puppy Shopping Essentials Before your puppy comes home, we recommend that you purchase several items. We've created a shopping list that we think is a great start. Personality The place where the Goldendoodle puppy really excels is its personality. Its breed is known for being simultaneously intelligent and adoring. A Goldendoodle puppy is very sociable, which makes them perfect animals for households with children and other animals or pets, even cats. Just like the Labradoodle, this breed requires correct socialization to ensure they get used to different sights, sounds and smells during puppyhood. This means taking your Goldendoodle to plenty of doggy-friendly parks so they can meet canine friends and introducing them to other people. Our Goldendoodle puppies for sale are fully trained Doodles, so you can focus on the fun bits, like bonding, eating food and playing. These dogs prefer to live in a house with a gated backyard where they can get regular exercise breaks. Do They Like to Play? Goldendoodle Puppy Training These clever dogs are perfect for first-time dog owners because Goldendoodles love to please and take great pride in learning new skills. Are Goldendoodles Intelligent? Both of its poodle and golden retriever parent breeds are known for their intelligence and trainability, and Goldendoodles have inherited this breed trait. This means the person training a Goldendoodle needs to be strong-willed, firm and consistent — but never harsh or aggressive. Much like a poodle, Doodles are sensitive dogs, and positive reinforcement is a must to bring out the best in them. How Obedient Are They? Goldendoodle pups adore human company, and making their pet parents happy brings them genuine satisfaction. As such, correct puppy training produces a highly obedient and loyal adult Goldendoodle. Older adults, people with disabilities and individuals with neurodevelopmental disorders can benefit significantly from the warmth and sweetness of these adorable Goldendoodle pups. Are They Easy to Train? Doodle puppies can be mischievous and cheeky, but aggression is practically unheard of. So as long as you treat them with the same gentle respect they offer, a Goldendoodle is one of the easiest dog breeds to train. Goldendoodles have loads of energy and require regular exercise to maintain a healthy weight and calm temperament. A Goldendoodle need a moderately high level of outdoor activity — usually a minimum of 30 minutes, but ideally one hour, of moderate to vigorous exercise per day will keep Goldendoodle puppies at their best. Unlike puppy mills, all good puppy and dog breeders provide a certificate that shows health clearances. At Pride and Prejudoodles, our tests cover common health conditions. As such, you have peace of mind when purchasing your new puppy from us. How Long Do Goldendoodles Live? Goldendoodles live for between 10 and 15 years. We hope you found our guide informative. Please contact us with any other questions you have about our Goldendoodle puppies for adoption. Vocality level 2 in 5 Disclaimer: While the characteristics mentioned here may frequently represent this breed, dogs are individuals whose personalities and appearances will vary. Please consult the adoption organization for details on a specific pet. Temperament As a crossbreed, it is hard to say for sure which behavioral and personality traits each Doodle will possess. Overall, pet parents report that Goldendoodles are friendly family dogs who do well with children and other pets. Good puppy socialization is key to their development as a well-rounded adult dog. They have an average to high energy level and require roughly minutes of exercise daily. Due to their loyal, people-pleasing nature, Goldendoodles can be easy to train, and if done properly with positive reinforcement, can be extremely obedient pets. They prefer room to run around, so would thrive with a fenced yard. They may not be the greatest choice for apartment dwellers, unless you are big on daily outdoor exercise. Upkeep With an average-to-high energy level, Goldendoodles do best with more active families who can dedicate time to playing games with them. They thrive on socialization and playtime with other dogs to help to burn their energy. Mental stimulation in the form of agility or ongoing training will help keep their adventurous spirit content. If not properly occupied, they can sometimes become destructive -- another reason why they might not be the best match for a small apartment. Goldendoodles have a double coated fur that can be quite dense. Some have fur that can be left in its natural state but you should still expect to brush it out roughly once per week. Others may have fur that will require more upkeep, including professional grooming every weeks the more dense the fur, the more it will trap dirt. Otherwise, bathe your Goldendoodle as needed, brush teeth regularly, and trim nails times per month. Be sure to check and clean their ears to remove any buildup and avoid infections! The mix of the two did not appear in America until the s, but has been gaining popularity as people value a type of dog that could possess the low dander levels of a Poodle and the intelligence and happy personality of a Golden Retriever. The Goldendoodle was originally offered as a larger alternative to the Cockapoo, one of the early intentional crossbreeds. Because Goldendoodles are so popular, they certainly can be found for adoption in animal shelters and Doodle-specific rescues. Dairy foods provide protein, calcium, vitamin D, A, B12, zinc, magnesium, and selenium. They build strong bones, reduce the risk of diabetes, and may improve heart health. Experimenting with small amounts of dairy foods is best to see what your dog can handle. Some dogs have trouble digesting milk but can enjoy small pieces of cheese or a blob or two of plain yogurt. My dog loves small chunks of cheese but cannot tolerate even a small spoonful of heavy cream — although she is okay with some milk. World of Dogz Commercial Dog Food Aside from the foods listed above, you can also feed your Labradoodle commercial dog food. Labradoodles can eat dry, wet, semi-dry food technically wet, too , raw, dehydrated, or freeze-dried food. However, you must be careful not to select a food package for a different breed with macro nutritional requirements other than Labradoodles. The most remarkable thing about commercial dog food is that it is far less expensive than homemade dog food and takes much less time to prepare, store, and feed. Labradoodles cannot eat chocolate, macadamia nuts, black walnuts, onion, garlic, grapes, or avocado. Standard market-packed sardines are the safest fish for dogs. Even onion powder in a broth can have this effect. Garlic Garlic can also make your dog anemic. Make sure any food you prepare contains no garlic flavor. Chocolate Theobromine and caffeine in chocolate and chocolate-adjacent products are toxic to dogs. Ensure you choose an organic brand. Nuts Some nuts can lead to weakness, vomiting, and tremors. Macadamia and black walnuts are the worst at this. Other varieties are also too high in fat. Avocado The avocado skin can result in vomiting and diarrhea, so your Labradoodle should be kept away from this fruit. Your dog can OD on alcohol. Sugar Dogs love sweet treats, but if you feed a sugar-rich diet, they will get fat. Yeast Dough If you bake bread at home, keep your dog away from unbaked dough. It can ferment in the stomach causing alcohol toxicosis, and the yeast can rise in the gut, causing a severe blockage. The first is to sit down and curate a Labradoodle diet that dodges the above. The second is to simply opt for packaged dog food. Specific fruits can be toxic to your Labradoodle — especially grapes and starfruit. You can feed your dog veggies — yet garlic and onion can be problematic. You can provide your dog fish — but not if it is completely raw. However, organic food is healthier than extruded kibble cooked at high temperatures which reduces its nutritional value. On the other hand, packaged dog food is easy to get, feed, and store. Wet Dog Food If your Labradoodle turns his nose up at dry kibble, you can try wet dog food as it contains much higher moisture content than dry food. Some larger dogs like it, whereas others prefer a bit of crunch. Take note, though, that canned wet food can be expensive for dogs the size of Labradoodles, as you will need to provide much more. Ensure you check the protein content, as wet food contains a lot of water. Dry and Wet Mix This is one of the most widely preferred Labradoodle food types, and you get the best of both worlds. Most Doodles who dislike dry or wet food like a wet and dry mix. Adding a few scoops of wet food to dry food changes the texture and palatability of the food, making it enticing to your dog. You can also add water to dry dog food making it easier to digest and more appetizing, especially if you have a fussy eater or a dog with general appetite loss due to illness. This gives your dog added variety — but remember to adjust the calories accordingly. You may also consider semi-moist dog food. You can use one of countless dog chow recipes to produce homemade dog food. Some dog owners enjoy home cooking for their dogs as it gives them complete control of what they feed them. However, preparing a homemade diet can also be expensive and is very time-consuming. Check out the directory of certified vet nutritionists from the American College of Veterinary Nutrition to help you find one in your area. Raw Dog Food Of course, if you grasp the idea of feeding chow made from leftover meat, you can always get your Labradoodle a prime Wagyu steak. A raw food diet consists of raw meat and organs mixed in — and raw bones. This method of feeding your dog has grown in popularity in recent years. You can prepare a raw diet at home, similar to a home-cooked meal except raw , or buy pre-prepared complete and balanced raw food, which is more convenient. While weighing up your options, you might want to consider the price of feeding a raw diet. Dehydrated Dog Food Dehydrated dog food also known as air-dried is often confused with dry dog food because it is technically dry. However, you must add water to get the food into the shape it is intended to be served. A dehydrated doggy diet is a healthy and minimally processed feeding option as it uses a low-heat and gentle drying method. It combines the convenience of dry food with the nutritional benefits of raw. It is easier to store and far more portable, but it can be costly. Freeze-Dried Dog Food Freeze-dried dog food is prepared at the factory and brought into its wet form, then freeze-dried into solids that dissolve in the water. It is dehydrated at a lower temperature. Once the food is put in a sealed package, it can take years to degrade because there is no moisture for microorganisms to survive. When you buy freeze-dried dog food, it is still raw. For example, a Labrador mixed with a Standard Poodle will need far more food than a much smaller Lab mixed with a Toy Poodle. A smaller adult female needs 1. A Labradoodle puppy needs 12 — 16 ounces of food per day divided into 3 meals initially and then 2 meals at 6 months old. Labradoodles tend to control their weight pretty well. However, some dogs may be food-motivated and greedy, especially if they carry the POMC mutated gene , which is responsible for an increased appetite in Labradors. Labradoodle Feeding Schedule You should consider the energy your dog expends during the day when creating a healthy feeding schedule for them. Mini Labradoodles, for example, will burn off energy more quickly than the standard variety. However, it is advised to offer one cup of dry dog food or its equivalent and then wait eight hours before feeding another cup to avoid canine bloat. When your Labradoodle is a puppy, you must split his intake into 3 or 4 meals. Feeding your pup can be slightly complicated because of your, and not his, schedule. Labradoodle Puppy Meal Plan Puppies need feeding more often, as they need extra calories for growth and to satisfy their energy requirements. Labradoodle puppies should be fed 4 meals a day up to 3 months of age, 3 meals a day up to 6 months of age, and 2 meals a day from 6 months to adulthood. Age of Labradoodle. There is so much to decide on, starting with the quantities! The Labradoodle is a hybrid dog cross with a Labrador retriever and a poodle. But since Poodles are bred in three sizes and can weigh anywhere from 4 to 70 pounds. So you may not be sure yet how big your little Labradoodle puppy will eventually grow. Labradoodle Puppy Feeding Timeline For young puppies under 6 months old, we recommend four daily feedings spaced at equal intervals throughout the day. After this you can move to three feedings around a year old. Protein sources should occupy the first few ingredients. Organic ingredients are a plus. Vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants are important to boost their weakening immune system. Labradoodles are a hybrid breed that combines the traits of a Labrador Retriever and a Poodle. They are known for their high energy levels and require regular exercise to stay healthy and happy. Feeding a Labradoodle a balanced diet that meets its nutritional needs will ensure it has the necessary energy for physical activities. If a Labradoodle is not receiving adequate nutrition or is being overfed, it may experience weight gain or become lethargic, which can decrease its activity level. Conversely, if a Labradoodle is not consuming enough food or getting the proper nutrients, it may lack the energy required for vigorous exercise. By providing the right amount of nutritious food, owners can help maintain an optimal activity level in their Labradoodles and promote their overall well-being. Although certain health issues that Labradoodles may experience are congenital and beyond our control, others can be influenced by environmental and lifestyle factors, such as diet. Some of the most common health issues faced by Labradoodles include the following: Food allergies. Certain ingredients in their food can cause allergies in Labradoodles. Food allergies in Labradoodles may present as dry, itchy skin, ears, or paws. However, unlike allergies, food intolerances do not involve the immune system but can lead to vomiting or diarrhea. Hip dysplasia. Some dogs show signs of pain and lameness. Elbow dysplasia. This can lead to painful lameness. It can cause mild or severe seizures. Progressive retinal atrophy PRA. This is a family of eye diseases that involves the gradual deterioration of the retina. Early in the disease, dogs become night-blind; as the disease progresses, they also lose their daytime vision. Sebaceous adenitis SA. This serious skin disease destroys the sebaceous glands that produce the skin and coat essential oils. This is a genetic bleeding disorder similar to hemophilia in people. It occurs in poodles and can show up in doodle hybrids. This thyroid gland disorder is thought to cause conditions such as epilepsy, alopecia hair loss , obesity, lethargy, hyperpigmentation, pyoderma, and other skin conditions. Heart disease. It can cause underlying conditions such as heart valve degeneration, irregular heart rate and rhythm arrhythmia , and dilated cardiomyopathy DCM. Labradoodle-Specific Dog Food Qualities To Look For Providing Labradoodles with a well-balanced and nutritious diet and preventative supplementation, as advised by your veterinarian, is crucial in maintaining their health and preventing potential health issues that may arise from poor nutrition. Here are the key qualities to look for in dog food for Labradoodles. Avoid common allergies. Because Labradoodles can develop allergies or food intolerances, we highly recommend conducting an at-home dog allergy test like the 5Strands kit. This particular kit can test for up to ingredients and determine which ones may cause food intolerance in your dog. Once you receive the results, you can use the list to avoid dog food formulas that contain potential allergens. Labradoodles can have sensitive digestive systems. Look for a dog food that adds probiotics to its formula. Dog probiotics support a healthy digestive system and immune system. Labradoodles can be prone to digestive issues, so look for dog food that is minimally processed, such as fresh dog food or homemade dog food for Labradoodles. Lower-quality kibble may contain fillers, artificial preservatives, and other ingredients that can be harder to digest and may cause digestive upset in some dogs. Skin and coat support. These nutrients help to maintain the health of the skin and coat. Joint support. Foods with added supplements such as glucosamine and chondroitin can help support joint health, which is crucial for breeds prone to hip and elbow dysplasia. Adrenal support. Choose a high-quality, balanced diet that provides all the necessary nutrients, and avoid foods with high potassium levels, as these can exacerbate symptoms. Low glycemic index. Foods with a low glycemic index can help manage conditions like epilepsy. They can help to avoid sudden spikes in blood sugar levels that can trigger seizures. Eye health support. A diet rich in antioxidants, including vitamins A, C, and E, and certain carotenoids like lutein and zeaxanthin can support overall eye health. Heart health. For heart conditions, food should be low in sodium and rich in taurine and L-carnitine to support heart function. Omega-3 fatty acids may also support heart health. Hypothyroidism management. Some research suggests that kelp and other seaweeds, rich in iodine, can support thyroid health. Chapter 2: The Reviews. Is kibble, cans, raw or homemade food better? Swapping Puppy Food Brands Moving into his or her new home is a challenging and exciting time for your Labradoodle puppy. Keep feeding what your pup is used to for at least two weeks. Then, slowly start mixing in the new food you have chosen for your pup. Labradoodle Puppy Diets Puppies have lots of growing to do. This means that they need more of certain minerals and nutrients for example calcium and phosphorus for bone growth. Your labradoodle pup will also need a higher amount of good quality protein. This is definitely not the case, though. This—among other things—can cause joint problems, such as hip dysplasia. Labradoodles are a cross between two breeds that are both already at high risk of developing hip dysplasia. The most important thing of all is to avoid overfeeding a Labradoodle puppy, as we will see later in this article. This is called hypoglycemia. Generally, a feeding schedule for your Labradoodle pup can look like this: 2 — 4 months: 4 meals daily 4 — 6 months: 3 meals daily 6 — 8 months: 2 — 3 meals daily Older than 8 months: 2 meals daily. Just make sure to divide the total daily amount onto multiple feedings. You can make slight adjustments to these amounts if your pup is looking a little slim or chunky. The number of calories your pup needs will also change as he or she gets older and heavier. There are a couple of different options out there. Commercial dog foods offer complete and balanced nutrition for your growing pup — this means that they have all the right nutrients in all the right amounts and ratios. If a puppy is fed an inappropriate diet, this could lead to long-lasting growth defects or other malnutrition diseases. Feeding a Labradoodle Puppy Kibble Kibble is the most popular type of dog food out there. There are only two things you need to pay attention to when choosing kibble: It should be designed specifically for puppies, and it should be high-quality. Research shows that higher-priced dog foods tend to have higher nutrient digestibility than lower-priced kibble — so it might be worth spending a bit more. Choose a kibble that contains a meat protein source as the first ingredient, and steer clear of ingredients like corn, soy, and cereals. Due to its high water content, the aromas and taste of the meat unfold better, making wet food the most palatable food there is. This comes at a bit of a cost, though: Wet food tends to be more expensive than kibble, and of course it spoils more easily. To get the best of both worlds of commercial dog foods, you can combine or alternate between kibble and wet food. The BARF diet consists of lots of raw meat and bones, as well as some veg and fruit. Supporters of raw feeding think that it will make your dog healthier, although there is no solid evidence for this yet. Raw meats are often contaminated with bacteria such as Salmonella or Campylobacter. These bacteria could potentially cause diseases in your pup. However, this is extremely rare, as the digestive tract most dogs can handle these bugs just fine. This means that there is a lot less danger of bacterial infections from raw meats. Keep in mind that cooking for a dog is not the same as cooking for yourself. Avoid spices, onions, garlic, cooking oils, and too much salt. These are dogs that will always want more food and are prone to obesity. It can help to space out meals or add one or two feedings a day if your dog is constantly hungry. Another option is to make your dog work for small amounts of food throughout the day — be it with puppy training, food balls, or puzzles. The possibilities are endless. Within a few weeks you should be able to tell if they would be content with changing to 2 meals per day. Some dogs will be happy with 1 meal per day from about the age of one year onwards. However this is a decision that should be made on a pup-to-pup basis. Your puppy will need to have access to plenty of fresh water. Our Labradoodles enjoy a variety of fruits and vegetables. These include blueberries, apples, bananas, strawberries, pumpkin, beans, peas, and carrots. They also thoroughly enjoy eggs cooked or raw , tuna, sardines, and the occasional dollop of yoghurt. Our dogs enjoy a balanced and grain-free dog food, coupled with good quality fresh meats. If choosing to feed dry food, there are fantastic quality brands available. It is very easy to make food yourself for your dog when feeding your Labradoodle puppy. This enables you to give your dog a good variety of nutrients. You can search for recipes on the internet that would suit your dog, or ask your vet. Be aware of the additives that some pet foods may have in them. These can often have a negative effect on their long-term health. Raw bones are also fantastic for Labradoodles, including ribs and chicken necks. Ask your local butcher for a nicely cut dog bone suitable for the size of your pup. Your puppy will love a good bone to chew on, they are often obsessed with chewing anything and everything at this age! Bones are a great source of calcium, as well as acting as a fantastic tooth brush for dogs! We avoid feeding our dogs high-lactose forms of dairy, such as milk and cream, as these can cause gastrointestinal issues of varying severity. We also abstain from giving our pups lactose-free puppy milk. This is nutritionally redundant in the presence of a balanced diet. Our dogs do, however, thoroughly enjoy a treat of cheese or the occasional splash of yoghurt. Hypro Premium Australian made, ensuring freshness is a great option for your puppy. It is nutritionally balanced and high quality. Your puppy will be used to this already, having eaten it at our home. Another firm favourite is Vets All Natural, a rehydratable and biologically appropriate option that is mixed through raw meat. Labradoodles by nature are not greedy or voracious eaters, and will only eat if they are hungry. You can weigh your puppy regularly to keep a track of their growth. These include chocolate, grapes, raisins, avocados, onion, garlic, and all cooked bones this list is not exhaustive. Never feed your dog cooked bones as this can be fatal due to the bones splintering within the dogs intestinal system. I've always had a special love for boxers, it was love at first sight with Baxter. He peed on my shoe while looking up at me, it was all over, I knew he was the one, he had melted my heart. Baxter was very ill since he was 6 weeks old when I brought him home from the breeders house. Each time we took Baxter in for treatments; we were informed of new information on his medical condition that took a turn. The x-rays showed he had a heart condition on top of him already being sick. Baxter was taken to an cardiologist Blue Pearl where further tests were done. Echocardiogram, Ultrasound of his heart, Doppler. The Diagnosis was gloom, the left side of his heart was enlarged with a hole that may never close. Baxter's health continued getting worse, he needed to be taken to multiple vets and specialty hospitals for his health conditions. Where extensive testing he was diagnosed with pancreatitis, an autoimmune disorder, his kidney and liver started to be affected at this time. I was so devastated I was going to lose Baxter. Baxter had to be hospitalized for 2 weeks. The best hospital I will always recommend them to anyone. They saved his life. He was neutered at the age 14 months old. He is very special to our hearts and he is the reason I started Majestic DiafianoAngel Boxers in his honor to stop careless heartless breeders that produce un-healthy puppies for their own personal greed. They look past who all suffers when producing un-healthy puppies for their own personal greed to make money off of families. How can they sleep at night knowing they are placing a horrible death sentence on these puppies. I made a mission to put bad careless heartless breeders out of business. I am committed to only producing healthy Boxer puppies for your family. Meg Chromey.

Bloodline — Dogs with significant titles can be much pricier than newcomers in the show ring. Breed Popularity — The German shepherd is one of the most popular breeds in the U. Location — Most breeders in rural areas will charge less for a puppy than breeders in an area with a large number of people and dogs. Breeders throughout the state can be found online by searching for websites that sell dogs directly from their kennels. It is also possible to find breeders at local dog shows or through newspapers, magazines, and other forms of advertising. The following are some of the most important factors to consider when finding a breeder. Breeders should have at least one member in good standing within the appropriate breed club. Reputable breeders will also have a website and as much information as possible about their dogs, including bloodlines and even x-rays for those dogs with problems such as hip dysplasia. A breeder who specializes in producing show dogs should have some degree of specialization. Papers — Anyone can buy a dog, so reputable breeders will require proof that you are who you say you are before allowing you to purchase their pups. Visit Your German Shepherd Breeder in Alabama in Person Once you have located a breeder, it is not a bad idea for you to visit their home in person. To be sure that the pups are kept in a clean environment with plenty of fresh air and exercise areas where they can run around and play. You should also be able to reach into their cages and pick them up without being bitten. Another good reason to visit your breeder is to check out their kennels. A good breeder will also provide you with a tour of the facility which should be clean, but not spotless. The dogs should appear to be well-fed and healthy. You should ask about the type of food that has been fed to your pup during his first few months. When making a final decision about buying a German shepherd puppy, look for signs of shyness or aggressiveness toward people. Aggressive dogs are more likely to be prone to biting, whereas shy dogs can grow up to be timid and afraid of strangers. Any signs of aggression should automatically eliminate the pup from your consideration because aggressive pups often become aggressive adult dogs. At this point, it is usually too late for them to change their behavior patterns. Questions to Ask Ask for References from Your German Shepherd Breeder in Alabama Reputable breeders will have references available to you, so it is a good idea to ask for them. This provides added protection should there be any problems with your new pup in the future. References should include the names of buyers who have bought German shepherds from this breeder in the past. Their information should include their name, address, telephone number, and the years they were the customer of that breeder. If possible, call or visit these references to personally inquire about their satisfaction with the German shepherd puppies they received from your prospective breeder. While you are there, look at how well-behaved and friendly these grown dogs appear to be. Greet them yourself and ask for a short interview regarding their experiences with this breeder. You should also get to know these customers and their dogs, if possible. If you have children, take them along with you to meet these dog owners so they can see how friendly these adult dogs are around people, especially children. If any of the adults seem shy or hesitant in your presence, ask them why. This is perhaps the most important question for any buyer to ask a breeder. Reputable breeders usually have good relationships with at least one veterinarian in the area where they live. A reputable breeder will know which vets are knowledgeable about their particular type of dog and which ones offer low-cost spaying services, vaccinations, and neutering services. Look Out for The Signs of An Unethical German Shepherd Dog Breeder in Alabama Some unethical breeders will lie to their customers and potential buyers, so you always need to be extra careful when dealing with such a breeder. A good breeder will also want you to be aware of any health issues and what steps they take to ensure that this issue does not become a problem for their puppies in the future. A good breeder will tell you anything you need to know about the health issues or injuries of either parent dog. Some of these steps include: The most important decisions that you will make for your dog revolve around the type of crate you choose and where in your house it will be kept. While most puppies can be trained not to eliminate indoors if they are properly potty-trained, you still need to buy a crate for your new dog. Puppies can be very destructive if they are not given something to keep them occupied when unsupervised. While most pups can hold their bladders for up to four hours at a time by the time they are four months old, this is still a good idea if you want to leave your puppy. Potty Training Your New German Shepherd Puppy The most important thing to remember about potty training your puppy is that this process will not happen overnight. It takes a lot of patience and dedication, but if you can stick to it, then your pup will be potty-trained in no time. The best way to potty-train your new puppy is to take him outside every two hours. If you choose to crate your pup when you work all day or even when out of the house for a few hours , make sure that you take him out of his crate at the same time every day, and immediately take him outside to go to the bathroom. You can also leave a kitchen timer next to his crate so that he can learn when it is time for you to be let out. This is especially important when your dog is a puppy. We hope it helps you find the perfect puppy. There are many people who have asked us to write more articles on several different topics. Dogs live with a routine, and they are easy to train by having one. For this reason, make a schedule of the things you need to do regularly. Eventually, your pup will learn the routine events and will make itself adept at them. It will help you prepare for your pet, especially in the first few days of living together. As you allow your pet to adjust, do your best to create a stress-free environment for it. Always supervise it as it familiarizes itself with its new home. Still, it would be best to prepare yourself for loud noises when your pet is asleep. Moderate Training German Shepherds are highly trainable. It simply means they respond well, especially to positive reinforcement. Squeaky Toys Out of all toys, your pet will love the squeaky ones. For this reason, prepare for a lot of loud squeaks every time your pet is active. Thus, in picking your pet, you may want to consider getting it from the best. Requires expectations on both sides A good breeder will create a contract that offers not only what he or she expects from you. More than that, he or she will also show what you can expect from him or her. Sends puppies properly A good breeder will never send a puppy in a compartment and without any responsible person to go with it. However, before bringing one into your home, it is essential to consider the costs associated with owning a Golden Retriever. In this article, we'll explore the question, "How much does a Golden Retriever cost? The overall price of a Golden Retriever can vary widely depending on a number of factors, such as the dog's age, lineage, and location. However, it is crucial to keep in mind that buying a puppy is just the beginning of the expenses associated with owning a Golden Retriever. In addition to the initial price, routine vet visits and vaccinations are necessary to keep your Golden Retriever healthy and prevent illnesses. These costs can add up quickly, especially in the first year of your dog's life when they require more frequent check-ups and vaccines. Your dog will typically require annual check-ups and routine vaccinations throughout their life. You can also choose to microchip your pet for additional security measures. Another ongoing expense associated with owning a Golden Retriever is grooming. While Golden Retrievers are relatively low-maintenance when it comes to grooming compared to some other breeds, they do require regular brushing and occasional baths. So, you will need to set aside adequate funds for this care. A Golden Retriever puppy cost can vary. The overall price will depend on whether you choose to purchase from a breeder or adopt from a rescue organization. However, it is essential to note that some breeders will charge more for puppies that have exceptional bloodlines or rare coat colors. If you choose to adopt a Golden Retriever puppy from a rescue organization, the adoption fee is usually much lower than the purchase price from a breeder. It is important to note that adoption fees will usually cover the cost of veterinary care, food, and shelter for the puppy while in the rescue organization's care. Often if you choose to adopt from a rescue or dog shelter, the pet will come into your family already spayed or neutered and up to date on all vaccinations. Color One of the most significant factors is the color of the puppy. Golden Retrievers typically come in shades of gold, but some may have a slightly darker or lighter coat, which can create variations in their price. For instance, puppies with lighter-colored coats may be more expensive than those with darker coats. Bloodline Puppies with a pedigree from a well-known champion bloodline are often more expensive than those without a proven lineage. This cost difference is because they are likely to have a superior appearance, temperament, and overall health characteristics. Often dogs from such lineage come with documentation and official paperwork to verify their background. A quality breeder who has invested time and resources in breeding and raising quality Golden Retrievers may charge a higher price for their puppies. This reason is that they are more likely to provide you with a healthy and well-socialized puppy. Estimated Size Finally, the estimated size of the puppy can impact the cost. Typically, male Golden Retrievers are larger than females, and puppies from larger litters may be smaller than those from smaller litters. Owing to that, puppies from a smaller litter may be more expensive as they tend to be in higher demand. Overall, it is essential to consider all of these factors when looking to purchase a Golden Retriever to ensure that you get the best value for your money. As we've discussed, the cost of purchasing and maintaining a Golden Retriever can quickly add up. However, investing in a GPS-tracking dog collar is one way to protect your investment in your furry friend. A GPS-tracking dog collar can help make sure that your Golden Retriever doesn't wander too far from home or get lost. A GPS tracking dog collar can help you quickly locate your dog if they do manage to escape, allowing you to bring them home safely and quickly. No doubt a GPS-tracking dog collar is an additional expense, but it can provide peace of mind and protection for your furry friend, making it a worthwhile investment for any Golden Retriever owner. It can give you the confidence to let your dog explore and play freely while still being able to keep an eye on their location and well-being. Golden Retriever Breed Guide The Golden Retriever is a popular breed known for being friendly and having an affectionate personality. They are intelligent, eager to please, and have a gentle nature, making them excellent family pets. They are typically very patient with children and get along well with other animals, making them an ideal companion for families with kids or other pets. Golden Retrievers are considered to be a medium to large breed in terms of size and weight. Males typically weigh between 65 and 75 pounds and stand in inches between 23 to .Alternatively, females weigh between 55 pounds to 65 pounds and stand in inches between .Golden Retrievers have an average lifespan of 10 to 12 years, but with proper care, they can live up to 14 years. Golden Retrievers are an active breed. They frequently require multiple sessions of daily exercise to stay in peak shape. They enjoy many types of outdoor activities, including swimming, fetch, and hiking. These dogs make great companions for those who enjoy an active lifestyle. However, they can also adopt a more laid-back lifestyle if they don't receive regular exercise. The lifetime care costs of a Golden Retriever will often depend on factors such as their health, age, and lifestyle. Budgeting for these costs and planning accordingly to ensure that your furry friend receives the care they need throughout their lifetime is essential. There are several ways to reduce the cost of owning a Golden Retriever. One option is to adopt a dog from a local animal shelter or rescue organization. Adopting a dog can be significantly less expensive than buying a puppy from a breeder, and it also helps to reduce the number of dogs in shelters. Another way to save money is to consider adopting an older dog instead of a puppy. Older dogs may have already gone through the training process, which can save on the cost of obedience classes and training supplies. They may also be less demanding in terms of exercise and may already be house-trained, which can save on cleaning and flooring expenses. When buying a Golden Retriever puppy, it's crucial to find a breeder who will always prioritize the health and life quality of their dogs. A breeder should be able to provide you with health guarantees, documentation of the puppy's lineage, and proof of vaccinations and other necessary medical treatments. Moreover, it's also a good idea to visit the breeder's facility and meet the puppy's parents, if possible, to get a sense of the breeding environment and the temperament of the puppies. While it may be tempting to choose the cheapest option when buying a Golden Retriever, doing so can lead to additional expenses down the line if the puppy develops health problems that require expensive medical treatment. A reputable breeder may have higher upfront costs but is more likely to produce healthy puppies with fewer genetic health issues. This initial extra cost can ultimately save you money and heartache in the long run. By taking the time to research breeders and consider all options carefully, you can save on the initial cost of owning a Golden Retriever while still providing a loving home for a furry companion. Conclusion: The Cost of Owning a Golden Retriever In conclusion, owning a Golden Retriever can be a fulfilling experience, but it is crucial to consider the upfront and ongoing costs that are commonly associated with owning one. Choose a breeder who respects your lifestyle and preferences and who is primarily concerned with finding a good home for their puppies. Make sure the dog looks like the pictures and that they have the temperament that you want. If you are working with a breeder, be sure to check their credentials and ask for references. You can speak to other dog owners who have gone through the breeder. Finally, do not rush into getting a dog. Conclusion While Golden Retrievers can be moderately expensive to keep over the ten to twelve years that they generally live, there are many ways that people can reduce the cost of keeping them. One of the best ways to save money while raising a Golden Retriever is to get quality pet insurance. These missing costs and services will be your responsibility, making the total cost ultimately the same. Not to mention the added stress on you these extra expenses and issues create! Talk with your vet about the procedure, when you should get it done, and how much it might cost. Dental Care for Your Golden Retriever Golden Retrievers, like many dogs, can be prone to dental issues such as plaque buildup, gum disease, and tooth decay. These cleanings typically involve scaling, polishing, and potentially extractions if necessary. Some insurance providers offer optional dental coverage as an add-on or as part of more comprehensive plans. If dental coverage is included in the policy, it typically covers a portion of the costs associated with dental cleanings, extractions, and other necessary dental treatments. This typically includes services such as bathing, brushing, trimming, nail clipping, ear cleaning, and sometimes additional services like de-shedding or dematting. Some groomers may offer package deals or discounts for regular appointments or bundled services. This monthly expense may seem like an additional cost, but it can be a worthwhile investment when considering the potential savings on veterinary bills for treatments, surgeries, and medications. By having pet insurance in place, you can ensure that your Golden Retriever receives the necessary care without straining your finances in the event of unexpected health issues. Puppy Training and Socialization Classes Attending puppy training and socialization classes is highly recommended for the comprehensive development of your Golden puppy. These classes provide structured learning environments, social interaction, and essential obedience training. By enrolling your Golden Retriever puppy in these classes, you ensure they receive the necessary foundation for good behavior, social skills, and overall well-being. These baby teeth will be replaced by a more substantial, less needle-like set, but what do puppy teeth look like when they fall out? We all know that the teething process is pretty painful for babies and young children. Is the same true for puppies? Nevertheless, there are a few things that you can do to make the process a bit better for them. In this article, we will take you through everything you need to know about puppy teeth. Below are some of the most important terms to know. Alveolus — This is the socket in which the tooth sits and provides a bed for the root. This will affect the formation of their teeth. Crown — The part of the tooth visible above the gum line Deciduous — These are the baby teeth that will eventually be replaced by adult teeth. Dolichocephalic — This is the shape of the head for dogs that have a long and narrow nose like the Collies and Greyhounds. These are flanked by canines on the upper and lower jaw, so they should have four. Behind these are the premolars, and then at the very back of the mouth are molars. Generally speaking, your dog should have 12 incisors, four canines, 16 premolars, and 10 molars. Puppies have fewer teeth as they only have the incisors, canines, and 12 premolars. Most puppies will start to get their baby teeth at the same time, but losing their baby teeth and growing in their adult set can take different amounts of time depending on their breed. Nevertheless, below is a general timeline for puppy tooth development that fits most dogs. They should still be with the breeder and their mother at this point, and as their teeth grow their mother will be less inclined to feed them. This can be quite a painful time, as the baby teeth fall out as new adult teeth grow underneath and push the old teeth out of place. Dogs can benefit from a soft chew toy for some pain relief at this time. Most adult dogs have 42 teeth. If you can still see baby teeth in their mouth at this point, now is the time to check in with your vet to see if everything is on track. You may not see as many puppy teeth around as you might imagine, as your dog will also probably swallow quite a few of them. They fall out in small enough pieces not to be a choking risk, and they get broken down in the stomach and digested. You will want to keep their gums healthy, though, and you should also start to train your puppy about tooth brushing from a young age so that it is routine once they are an adult dog. From the time that they are about 12 weeks old, you can start giving attention to their mouth so that they can get used to it. Start by gently massaging their gums with clean fingers so that they become comfortable with being touched there. Give them lots of rewards like hugs and snuggles when they handle this well. Once they are comfortable with that intrusion, you can introduce the toothbrush and toothpaste. Start with a dental brush that fits on your finger to repeat the sensation they already know, and then graduate to other products. While their teeth are changing, they might suffer quite a bit of discomfort in their mouths and some dental toys can help. Rubbing their gums on a hard or slightly abrasive surface can provide considerable relief. If they are in particular pain, a cooling sensation can also help. It can be a good idea to put their favorite teething toy in the fridge or freezer for a while before giving it to them. Did you miss canine dental health month? Just like with your teeth, a healthy mouth starts with regular brushing. While your dog might not tolerate having its teeth brushed daily, an absolute minimum of once a week is required though vets recommend three times a week. You can find the best dental chews on Chewy here. In addition to this regular cleaning that you do yourself, you should also book regular professional cleanings with your dentist or groomer. This can double as a check-up that can alert you to problems early. Aside from this, it is important to feed your dog appropriately. Just like with humans, what you eat can degrade your teeth and you want to avoid too much of anything that is too gritty or has excess sugar. Moreover, good nutrition will make them and their teeth more resilient. Surely dogs never brushed their teeth in the wild. This is largely due to the modern doggy diet. Dry dog food is much more likely to get stuck between teeth and cause decay than the fresh meat that dogs would have eaten in the wild. While switching your pup to a raw food diet might help, it is probably much easier to commit to a regular dental care routine. As with most health concerns, some breeds of dogs are more prone to dental issues than others. Here are some of the dog breeds with the worst teeth! Collies Collies often have a pronounced overbite which can result in uneven wear and gum damage as a result of tooth impact. Pugs Dogs like pugs, which have squashed faces, are more likely to develop gum disease than other dogs. Their small faces also mean overcrowded mouths, so food is more likely to get trapped and start to cause decay. Yorkies Yorkies and other toy breeds often end up with snaggle teeth and retain baby teeth as their adult teeth grow in. This can be a problem because they form food traps that cause faster decay. This results in plaque build-up, which inevitably leads to gum disease. This can lead to periodontal pockets. This is where bacteria gets trapped between the gum and the tooth, causing gum tissue to break away from the tooth and allow decay on the surface of the teeth. Infections can quickly make their way down to the roots of the teeth. FAQs Do puppies swallow their baby teeth? It is very common for puppies to swallow their baby teeth. This is harmless to them and no problem. If you do see their teeth around, they are often in pieces that look like small grains of rice. What soothes a teething puppy? Chew toys can provide a lot of comfort to teething puppies. While it might seem counterintuitive to encourage them to use their teeth, it is a bit like scratching an itch. If they are in particular pain, cold can help. Keep their toys in the fridge or soothe their gums with a little bit of ice. Do dogs get sick with teething? Teething can cause your dog to feel unwell, resulting in an upset stomach and decreased appetite. The first sign that something is not right may be an unusual stool. Give them soft, easy-to-chew food at this time, be patient, and expect them to sleep a bit more than usual. Do dogs need anesthesia for tooth extraction? Whether your dog will need anesthesia for a tooth extraction depends on the situation. If your dog has a rotten tooth with a weak root, extraction may be quick and not require anesthesia. If the problem is with one of the deep-rooted molars, your vet is likely to recommend it. The Verdict Just like humans, puppies go through a dental transformation through the early months of their lives during which they grow a baby set of teeth. These then fall out to make room for an adult set. Your dog has a tendency to swallow them as they fall out, which is completely safe and normal. This is largely related to changes in their diet, so their teeth need more attention than ever. While it will probably take a while for your dog to get used to the idea of you playing around in their mouths, once they are properly trained they might actually enjoy it, and teeth cleaning time can become a bonding experience for the two of you. How long does puppy teething last? With human babies, we tend to associate teething with sleepless nights and grumpy infants. With puppies, our concerns tend to focus more on biting and destructive chewing behavior. How many teeth do dogs have as adults? Labradors are lucky. Unlike some modern dogs breeds, they have a full sized jaw bone with plenty of room for their teeth. Most adult labs have a beautifully designed set of forty-two teeth. This is a perfect mouthful for crushing bones and for ripping and tearing up meat! Just like people, dogs can have problems with their teeth. Tooth decay is common and teeth can get broken. Usually this is one of the premolars that sit between the long canine tooth, and the big molars at the back of the mouth. How many teeth does a Labrador puppy have? Like human babies, Labrador puppies are born without teeth. And, like human babies the first set of deciduous baby teeth are lost during infancy. These are replaced by bigger, stronger grown up teeth. This means your puppy will only have twenty-eight teeth until he cuts his grown up ones. When do Labrador puppies start teething? That first stage in the teething process involves the cutting of the first teeth through the sealed gum. In addition, this phase is pretty much over once you collect your puppy at eight weeks old. When do puppy teeth fall out? At this stage your pup loses his baby teeth and replaces them with permanent grown up ones. Loss of baby teeth begins after the puppy is three months old. The chewing may help to relieve the discomfort in his gums, but you need to watch him carefully. Make sure he is not swallowing bits of blanket or toys that have come apart. Some people claim that their puppies are more irritable during teething but I have not personally found this to be the case. How do puppies lose their teeth? Once the root is fully reabsorbed, the tooth becomes loose and is easily knocked out when the puppy eats or chews his toys. However, his gums may be a bit irritated or sore. But a word of caution before you rush out to buy some. Puppy teething gels Understandably, some people want to use puppy teething gels. However, we recommend you have a chat with your vet before using puppy teething gels. As opinions vary as to whether or not gels are effective or even harmful. You might also come across a cracked tooth. This may need to be seen to by a vet to avoid the risk of infection. Infection can be quite painful. It simply means he has knocked one of his loose teeth out a bit roughly, before it was quite ready to fall out. Most of the time, your puppy probably swallows his baby teeth along with his dinner, or while playing. You may occasionally find a baby tooth, which you can keep as a memento, but they are tiny and quite hard to spot! What are the best chew toys for teething puppies? Without doubt, the most useful toys you can buy your teething puppy are Kongs. You need to fill the hollow center with mushy food and freeze them. Your puppy can then spend up to half an hour of bliss removing the frozen contents. This soothes his mouth and relieves boredom another common cause of chewing. You can buy lots of other chew toys but I find these to be the best. When will my puppy stop teething? Many puppies will be done with teething by about seven months and almost all puppies will have a full set of adult teeth at eight months old. This is because there are reasons other than teething for the enthusiastic chewing that so many Labradors seem to have. Does teething cause diarrhea or fevers? There are a great many claims for the effects of teething in children, from fevers to rashes and upset tummies. These claims, tend to be associated with that first stage in teething. In other words when the baby goes from no teeth at all, to a set of deciduous teeth. This stage is over in puppies before you bring your own puppy home. Over the next few months, your pup will lose his baby teeth and grow his adult replacements. This is the equivalent of what happens to older school-aged children, not what happens in human babies. If in doubt contact your vet In addition to this, there is little or no evidence to suggest that teething causes anything other than teeth in puppies. It is really important not to delay veterinary attention to small puppies that are not well. A small, sick puppy can become seriously ill very quickly. However, there are problems that puppies can have with their teeth. The first is to do with the structure of the jaw. The second is to do with the position of the teeth as they grow through the jaw. If you are looking for a puppy to raise as a working retriever, or for the show ring, this is something worth checking for. Sometimes teeth that look slightly misaligned will level out when the adult teeth come through, and vice versa. Periodontal Disease is a common and sometimes severe problem in dogs. Just like in human, dental hygiene is important in dogs! Have your puppy checked by your vet if you think he still has some deciduous teeth left in his mouth at six months old. Retained baby teeth can impede the growth of the adult teeth and cause problems for your puppy later on. The power of puppy teeth Despite a lack of molars puppies still have powerful jaws and very sharp teeth. From an early age, puppies are learning to harness that power and not to use it when playing or interacting with other dogs and people. This is a process called bite inhibition. Does teething cause biting in puppies Puppies tend to bite a lot when they are teething. But the teething itself is not the only cause. However, biting and growling is an important part of puppy play, that is often mistaken for aggression. Small puppies often bite too hard because the process of bite inhibition that we talked about earlier is not complete. They have learned how hard to bite their furry litter-mate and mother, but not how hard to bite on human skin. Teaching this is one of your roles. But once his adult teeth come through, it is a different story. His permanent teeth have to last him the rest of his life. For example, he may break a tooth. Therefore, he must be happy to have his mouth examined. This is something you can start when he is really small. Get him used to having his lips lifted up, and his teeth examined now, using food as a reward. A time when puppies lose their baby teeth and the adult ones start to emerge. With any luck, teething will go smoothly for your pup with minimal hiccups during that time. The majority of dogs, however, get in a great deal of discomfort when they are teething, which is when chewing comes in handy. It is common for puppies to develop sore gums during the teething process, as their adult teeth begin to poke through the gums. To alleviate teething discomfort, chewing helps soothe the teeth. As your pooch grows, it is normal for them to nibble and chew. Here is a guide to lab puppy teething, including information on when or what you can expect from the teething process with just a few symptoms as their adult teeth develop. Puppies teeth begin to appear around the time of weaning, which usually occurs between weeks of age, but depending on the breed, they can appear as late as 8 weeks of age. Beginning with their first tooth, a puppy gets 28 teeth, temporary teeth, referred to in different ways like milk teeth, deciduous teeth, or just simply puppy teeth. At this stage, your puppy loses his baby teeth and replaces them with permanent ones. After 3 months, puppies begin to lose their baby teeth. At around 4 months, it is likely your puppy will have some missing teeth. These teeth are remarkably sharp, designed to help them successfully adapt to carnivorous life after tasting meat for the first time. A few of the theories regarding sharpened teeth are associated with introducing solid food and assisting the pups in controlling their biting instincts. Once the root is fully reabsorbed the tooth becomes loose and is easily knocked out when the lab Puppies eats or chews his toys. Teething Gels For Puppies Fairly speaking, there are those who favor teething gels made for puppies. Our recommendation is to speak to your veterinarian if you are considering teething gels. There is disagreement regarding the efficacy or even the danger of teething gels. Like how do you know if your puppy is teething or not? What if your puppy is going through mental turmoil, chewing everything she encounters. Chewing Puppies chew by nature, however, if he suddenly shows a significant increase in her chewing behavior, it may indicate that he is teething. Make sure to give him his own toy because otherwise, you will regret it. Constant Drooling Puppies that are teething experience intense gum pain which leads them to constant drooling. When chewing, it gets even worse. Turn Into A Slow Eater As soon as the puppy starts to teeth, his mouth starts hurting and it gets even worse as he tries to eat. As a result, his eating rate slows down. Some may even stop eating. If possible, give him something softer and less chewy to eat during this time. Consult with your vet to get a list of soft foods that are suitable for him. Frequent Whining Every puppy whines while it is young. However, if you observe unusual whining even after he is past the whining stage, such behavior may be indicative of teething. Moreover, lab puppies who are teething often whine as they chew on toys as well as when they eat. Swollen Gums Plus Bleeding If you find blood on your puppy toy, do not panic. Unless the toy is drenched in blood and the puppy keeps acting the same, there is no need for further concern. Remember — It is possible for swelling and discomfort to persist for some time, so do not be shocked if the symptoms persist. However, if the bleeding seems excessive compared to normal teething, consult your veterinarian right away. Look Out For The Lost Teeth Most puppies lose their teeth while playing, so keep an eye out for teeth in his toys after he chews them. Owners of lab puppies often save their teeth to preserve their memory. If you wish to do the same, simply wash it, dry it well, and keep it in a safe place. This would be a great contribution to a memoir about your pet. Ideal Teething Toys for Lab Puppies As the lab puppies starts to teethe, the majority of pet parents are devastated to see their beloved puppies tearing up their house, devouring shoes, TV remotes, couch cushions, or digging through the garbage. We have listed some of the best toys that you can gift your pooches to cheer them up. Nylabone Key Ring Toy. Most of the time, people assume that they are just being destructive. Actually, we need to understand that puppies are chewing, more often than not, to relieve some discomfort. There are some important lessons your puppy needs to learn in these stages that will make life much easier as they get older. You can expect your puppy to stop teething when they are 6 or 7 months old. Puppy Teething Timeline If you are new to the puppy experience, you definitely anticipated some of the fun playtime and cute cuddling. However, there are probably other things that you did not anticipate that may drive you crazy. Behavior problems like chewing and biting are one of the most common reasons that people get rid of their dogs. When it comes to teething biting and chewing , you should understand what the puppy is going through. Knowing when your puppy will transition from one stage to another will help you have patience when you get the most frustrated. Weeks 2 to 4 Your Lab puppy was born, like most mammals that I can think of, without any teeth. He will still be with his mom, so there is not much you need to know about this period. At this stage, his teeth will still be too gentle for dry food—so he will still be nursing throughout this stage. Weeks 5 to 6 By this point, your puppy will have all 28 baby teeth. With his teeth in place, your Lab puppy should be introduced to soft, wet dog food. Lots of breeders will just use the same dry dog food they plan on feeding as the dog gets older. Click here to see how I like to prepare dry dog food for puppies in this stage of tooth development. Just use the puppy food you will be transitioning them to before they go home. When you are ready to use the soaked dog food, place it in a blender or food processor. Blend the mixture until it is the consistency of baby food no lumps. When you are ready to feed the puppies, you can mix it will some warm water or put it in the microwave for just a few seconds to take the frigid edge off. This is also when your puppy will start dropping his baby teeth. It will not be uncommon to find little, rice-sized puppy teeth around your house. On the other hand, you may not see the teeth if your puppy swallows them while eating. No big deal. This is because his mouth hurts. The gums are irritated and chewing on stuff gives some momentary relief from that discomfort. Anyone that has cared for a baby understands how miserable the teething process can be. It is no uncommon for a baby that is teething to be very miserable. They develop a fever, become very cranky, lose sleep, start to drool uncontrollably, rubbing their cheeks, etc. Especially his mouth. Puppies chew on everything… even you! Anything to get some relief from the teething process. Your vet will appreciate your helping your dog get comfortable with having his mouth handled. The frustrating part of this stage is how often you will get bit. It is just a part of the puppy game. And, when you do get bit, it hurts because his puppy teeth are like little needles. They do not need to bite down hard to cause some serious pain. Although the purpose of this article is not to get your dog to stop biting, here is a video that will help you through this stage. If you notice any puppy teeth remaining with the adult teeth, you should contact a vet and have them pulled. Problems in Labrador Puppy Teeth There are lots of different problems your puppy can experience in conjunction with teething. Retained puppy teeth are the most common. The puppy tooth is considered retained if the adult tooth has emerged. The adult tooth does not have to be fully grown in order for the tooth to be considered retained. As I mentioned above, make sure that you get your dog to a vet to consider having it pulled. Missing teeth are not necessarily a problem. If the adult teeth are starting to come in, it is possible to find a spot where the puppy tooth has fallen out, but the adult tooth is still just below the gum surface. Also, the angle helps you get anything that might be caught between the tooth and the gum. Pet Republique Finger Toothbrush This is the instrument you need if you want to really focus on a specific tooth and give direct attention. That stuff can cause serious problems for K-9 teeth. You can check Chewy. I about died. I grabbed a bag of these and within one month, I could visibly see the difference in the plaque buildup on her teeth. I am not exaggerating. The next time I took Lady to the vet, he could not believe the change. Now, he suggests them to all of his clients that have dogs with plaque build-up. Click on this image or this link to see what these are selling for today at Chewy. Best Toys for Labrador Puppies that are Teething There are a number of toys that you can get to help your puppy deal with the discomfort of teething. The benefit of getting some of these is that you can start training your puppy what is okay to chew and what is not. If you do not have one or more of these toys close at hand, you will find it very difficult to get your dog to stop chewing on your stuff. I think they are some of the very best dog toys on the market. Make sure you check out this video on how I use KONG toys to help with crate training and training my dog to be quiet. You can grab them from Chewy. This might be the most useful dog toy on the market. The polymer is completely safe for your young dog. The nylon rope relieves the discomfort from teething. Puppy Proofing Your Home Puppy-proofing your home is more about avoiding the point where you start to resent your puppy. Remember He is only a puppy and his mouth hurts. Any relief at all is going to be welcome as far as he is concerned. The frightening thing is how fast your puppy can destroy your favorite stuff. Puppy-proofing your house is as much about keeping your stuff safe as it is about keeping your puppy safe. So, make sure that electrical cords are tucked out of sight. Baby gates or doors are a great way to control where your puppy can and cannot go in your house. These are a great way to limit where your puppy can go in your home and thereby reduce the number of places you have to puppy-proof. Check out this metal gate from MidWest. It is a great option and will bring you some peace of mind.
Pug Grooming Overview Pugs are considered to be a high-maintenance breed in regard to grooming. With Pugs, their thick double coat sheds quite a bit and tends to hold in odors, their wrinkles and skin folds can quickly develop a build-up of moisture and debris commonly leading to skin yeast infections, skin is prone to dryness, and fold-over ears can become dirty rather quickly. Properly grooming a Pug will involve: Baths once every 3 weeks Touch-up cleaning in between baths, as needed Cleaning the wrinkles daily Brushing the coat every 1 to 3 days Cleaning the eye area daily Cleaning the ears; the ear flaps several times per week, the ear canals every 6 weeks Paw care every 2 weeks Nose care, as needed but usually every 1 to 3 weeks in the wintertime Trimming the nails every 6 weeks While this may seem like a lot of tasks, the staggered frequency of these grooming elements help keep things from becoming too overwhelming. And, whether you have a new Pug puppy or have been having some trouble grooming your older adult Pug, the tips in this article will help you get things on track with specific advice and steps to make each grooming task as easy as possible. Baths A Pug should have a bath once every 3 weeks, unless a skin problem or fur issue requires more frequent bathing with a specialty shampoo or it's an issue of being extremely dirty like having run through a mud puddle. Even if your Pug looks clean and smells just fine, stick with this schedule. Baths are given at this interval to cleanse away accumulated body oils. These are produced and secreted through hair follicles as the body's way of naturally keeping skin moisturized, but will block skin pores and start to smell if allowed to build up. You can give your Pug a bath in the kitchen sink most often done with puppies, but this can also work with adults if the sink is large enough , the bathtub, or even outside if the weather is warm. Though you can use a scooper like a dish or cup, using a nozzle will help you soak the fur down to the skin and properly rinse out the products that you have massage into the coat. When you give your Pug a bath, you will need a quality shampoo and wash-out conditioner , a thin washcloth, a scrub brush optional, but can help especially with adults due to the thick coat of this breed , and an absorbent towel. It's important to thoroughly dry the ear flaps and in between the toes since these areas are prone to skin yeast infections and other skin issues. Read more about giving a Pug a bath for complete details. Touch-up Cleanings If you feel that giving your Pug a bath every 3 weeks could not possibly keep your dog clean enough, you're right. But, other grooming tasks, like touch-up cleaning and additional elements listed in this article, will keep a Pug fresh and tidy during those intervals. Body touch-ups involve using a pre-moistened grooming wipe to spot-clean areas on the body. You'll want to wipe down the underbelly and genital area since urine can splash back onto the body when a dog is peeing. And, you may want to wipe the rear end since tiny specks of feces can cling to the fine hairs there. Wiping down the entire body can be a great way to remove fine particle debris, dirt, and allergens that tend to cling to the coat like pollen and grasses and doing this is part of helping control allergies with Pugs. An added plus, is that if you use a wipe with a nice fragrance, this can play a role in keeping a Pug smelling pleasant. You can use grooming wipes as often as every day or just randomly as needed. A great grooming wipe to use is Earthbath All-Natural Mango Tango Grooming Wipes ; these are thick, durable, and have a lovely fragrance. When you are cleaning just the wrinkles see next tip , you'll want to opt for the fragrance-free wipes since a scent on the face can bother some dogs. Cleaning the Wrinkles Pugs are known for their wrinkles and facial skin folds, it is a classic feature of this breed. And, while this does make a Pug look adorable, these areas tend to stay damp and dark, which is the ideal environment for bacteria and yeast. For this reason, Pugs are very prone to skin yeast infections particularly in their wrinkles and other areas like the armpits and genital area. For this reason, it is important to keep a Pug's wrinkles both clean and dry. This can be done by carefully wiping down each skin fold with a fragrance-free grooming wipe as mentioned in the previous point: '2. Touch up Cleanings'. This should be done a minimum of once a day and ideally 3 times a day after each meal. If you believe that your Pug may have a wrinkle infection, you may wish to read more about Pug dog wrinkles. Brushing the Coat Fawn Pugs have a double-layer coat and many black Pugs have a single layer, but all have thick, dense fur and this is a heavy shedding breed. So, if you have a Pug, going over the coat to remove dead hairs is one grooming element that cannot be ignored. Because of the densely packed coat, many of the fallen hairs will end up trapped within the coat as opposed to falling to the ground though, this will be apparent as well with lots of short hairs sticking to your furniture and even your clothes, if you don't brush your Pug often enough. Left in the coat, those fallen hairs will block proper air flow and eventually become weaved in with live hairs. Each hair that stays in the coat will eventually become coated in body oils, which can contribute to an unpleasant odor. So, the goal is to brush the coat from head to tail and don't forget about the legs with a tool that will reach down deep, latch onto all those loose and dead hairs, and remove them. Depending on your Pug's age puppies do not shed as much as adults and the season fall and spring are top shedding times , this task should be done every 1 to 3 days. To do this as effectively as possible, you'll want to use the right tool. You may have a brush in mind, like a slicker brush, and these can work well to a certain extent. However, one of the easiest and fastest ways to groom a Pug's coat is with a grooming glove. This is what it sounds like, it is a glove that fits over your hand and attached to it is a number of bristles. Since Pugs need their coat tended to quite often, you'll find that this prevents your hand from getting tired there's nothing to hold and that it works so well that you won't have to go over the coat as often as you would with a brush. For more about the shedding cycle and brushing tips, refer to Pug dog shedding for complete details. Cleaning the Eye Area Another classic feature of the Pug is this breed's large, slightly protruding eyes. The eyes are very beautiful, but their size and shape make them prone to collecting flecks of debris. And, any sort of eye irritation, which is common with Pugs, can cause excessive tearing. The goal for this grooming aspect is to keep the eye area as clean as possible, wiping away 'sleep' technically known as rheum , any eye discharge, and any possible fine particle debris on a regular basis. Ideally, this should be done once a day and can be done up to 3 times per day after each meal. Because the area around the eyes is very sensitive, we recommend using a specialty wipe for this. One like Arava Soft and Gentle Pet Eye Wipes is made just for around a dog's eyes and is an all-natural product that is terrific at removing eye crust and preventing discoloration on the fur around the eyes known as tear stains which can develop with chronic discharge. This is an all-natural product that uses a blend of chamomile, aloe vera, Lion's tooth dandelions, known for its soothing abilities and eyebright a flowering plant known for its ability to reduce eye inflammation. Read more about Pug eye care for complete details of common issues and care guidelines. Cleaning the Ears Pugs have folded drop ears, either with a rosebud or button shape though a small number have 'flying ears'. And, while a drop ear does cover the ear canal thus helping to prevent debris from entering , this type of ear also contributes toward excess wax and moisture becoming trapped in the ears which can lead to an unpleasant smell and possible ear infections bacterial or yeast. For these reasons, part of grooming a Pug involves keeping the ears clean. This is done by wiping the ear flap and cleaning the ear canal. The ear flaps should be wiped using only a semi-moist grooming or ear wipe since you'll to avoid using anything too wet so that moisture does not enter the canal. This should be done at least once per week. A recommended one is PPP Pet Aroma Care Ear Wipes which has both aloe vera and eucalyptus which cleans the ear flaps very well and also deodorizes the area for a fresh scent. The ear canals should also be kept free from excess wax buildup, any accumulation of debris, and any excess moisture. All of these elements can lead to ear infections. This is done by placing a few drops of an ear cleansing solution into the ear canal, massaging the base of the ear which works the solution around and helps break up wax and then wiping the ear flap of any debris that has come out with a piece of gauze or a cotton ball. This is typically done every 6 weeks; but, if a Pug is prone to ear infections, the veterinarian will usually suggest that this be done every 1 to 3 weeks. A recommended ear cleaning solution is Virbac Epi-Otic Advanced Ear Cleaner which has no alcohol which can sting and works excellent for both cleaning gunk out of the ears and drying up any excess moisture. Read more about Pug ear care for additional information regarding infections. Paw Care A dog's paws take on an awful lot; there are numerous terrains to adjust to, both hot and cold walking surfaces, tiny debris like sand and pebbles, contact allergens especially pollen , and contact irritants like lawn care chemicals in the spring and summer and ice melt products in the winter. Without good paw maintenance, paw skin can become overly dry and the paw pads can become damaged, causing both discomfort and loss of traction. In severe cases, there can be cracking which is very painful for dogs and can take quite some time to heal. For these reasons, part of grooming a Pug is applying a paw wax to the paw pads and in between the toes. There are many benefits of using paw wax including: A layer of protection from hot walking surfaces A layer of protection from frozen walking surfaces Help in preventing 'snowballing', a term used to describe when a dog walks in snow, snow melts between the toes, and then stretches the sensitive skin there when it re-freezes. Keeps paw skin properly moisturized Gives a dog good traction Though it varies depending on how much outdoor walking a dog does, most Pugs should have a paw wax applied once every 2 weeks. One of the most popular and effective paw waxes is Musher's Secret Paw Protection Wax ; this is massaged in every 2 weeks, both on the pads and between the toes, it absorbs pretty quickly about 10 to 15 seconds but you may find it easiest to put this on your Pug right when they're resting and about to go to sleep. Read more about Pug paw care for details regarding all possible paw issues, including itching, along with effective treatments and remedies. Nose Care Most Pugs do not need any extra attention given to the nose during most of the year, as long as there are no issues. However, this changes for many Pugs in the wintertime and into early spring. For those living in areas that have cold winters, this usually means much drier area since cold air cannot hold humidity like warmer area can. Dry air, when heated, stays dry, so this is a common problem regardless of how much time a Pug spends outdoors or indoors. This sort of overly dry environment can end up taking a toll on a dog as the nose skin becomes parched. Added to this, when a dog is out in the cold and licks their nose, this can lead to chapping, compounding the issue. A Pug's nose can end up raw, sensitive, dry, peeling, or even cracked. If this problem starts in the winter, it may not be noticed until things are very bad, often as winter transitions into spring. This issue can be prevented by applying a quality nose balm to a Pug's nose which can be done once a week for maintenance or as often as 3 times a day to treat existing problems. Trimming the Nails The frequency of how often a Pug needs their nails trimmed will vary from dog to dog. Walking on hard outdoor surfaces can keep nails somewhat filed down, however it cannot be a replacement. For most Pugs, this grooming task is needed every 6 to 8 weeks. If the nails are not tended to, they can curve around and grow back into the flesh. This can be cause quite a bit of discomfort and lead to a dog walking with an irregular gait that, if not addressed, can eventually lead to skeletal damage in some cases. Some owners are squeamish when it comes to nail trimming though it is not that much different than cutting your own nails and that is okay and one of the reason that dog groomers exist. Alternatively, many vet offices also offer this service. If you decide to trim your Pug's nails at home, the most commonly used tool is a canine nail clipper. The goal is to clip the nail right before it begins to hook over. One like the Dog Nail Clippers By Boshel has a safety guide to help you line up each nail to help avoid the quik a vein that runs down the center of the nail which can bleed quick profusely if nicked ; though you should have some septic powder on hand just in case which helps stem any bleeding should an owner clip a nail too short. To keep your pugs shielded and comfortable while they are playing outdoors or during daily walks, a warm or water-resistant dog coat is a winter essential. Most dog winter coats have a water-resistant shell feature, but if that feature is not as vital to you as warmth and breath, then a standard fleece-style jacket works better. Pugs overheat far faster and easier than they freeze. Never make the mistake of putting clothes on your pug in warm weather. The biggest problem with most winter dog coats happens to be sizing. The climate where you live is a huge determining factor for whether your pug will need a coat. Even if you live somewhere that gets a little nippy during the winter months, adding an extra layer on your pug is never a bad idea. Pugs are brachycephalic, which means they have short snouts. Their structure makes them especially susceptible to respiratory illness and breathing trouble. Being in any kind of extreme weather puts them at a greater risk for potentially life-threatening issues. But when to get a coat for your Pugs? You may want to invest if you notice your pug shivering while going out to potty or for a walk. Sid absolutely loves when my kids dress him up. He enjoys wearing his very own jacket. Waterproof fabric works great for snow and raining days. If you live where winds will chill you to the bone, having a wind-resistant material would be paramount. Size Incorrect size is single-handedly one of the most common mistakes that lead to returns or exchanges. Each manufacturer will have their own sizing chart, which will vary depending on the company. Be sure to check reviews from other buyers to see if the item runs large, small, or true-to-size. You can find durable, stylish coats at affordable prices. Or maybe you want to pay for something you know is quality, knowing it will eventually pay for itself. Your budget alone can narrow the search. Thickness Owners who live in climates that stay above freezing will only need a single layer jacket, such as fleece. If you live in windy plains, make sure that the jacket or coat is wind-resistant to avoid chill. In extreme winters, having a well-insulated multi-layer coat will give a solid layer of protection for your pug. If you experience a lot of snow or freezing rain, be sure that the coat you choose is waterproof as well as the appropriate thickness. Here in Ohio, we get some pretty chilly winters, so I have a heavier coat for Sid. But since we are all over the place, I also like to have a lighter waterproof jacket on hand, just in case he needs it. Style You want to have a great style, both cosmetically and functionally. You naturally want your little guy or gal to look cute as a button. Prepare your pug! Remove the collar from your pug so it would not get in the way of your measurements, and then make sure your pug is standing comfortably. To aid in measures, make sure you and your pug are on the same eye level. Measure, measure, measure! Next, calculate the girth of your pug, by measuring the widest part of its chest below the forelegs and then add two inches to your findings. This is to ensure a comfortable fit. Measure the back from the center of the neck to the start of the tail, and then add two inches. Sid is a very wiggly model But that is really all you need to get started! Let your search for the best coat begin. First of all, it looked super cute on Sid, which is always a perk. The design is windproof, made of soft polyester outside and plush fleece inside. While it looks like a button-up, it has metal button snaps. There are several adorable colors to choose from, so you can pick the best look for your pug. The sizing chart is a wee bit off, so just make sure not to order too small when you measure.

Shop All Cat Food Large and giant breed dogs — Great Danes, German shepherds, Labrador retrievers and the like — have different nutritional needs than smaller breeds. All puppies are born with their bones still developing, but large breed puppies are more susceptible to developmental bone and joint disease during their rapid growth phase to 1 year of age. In fact, large breeds reach 50 percent of their body weight at around 5 months of age. Smaller breeds reach 50 percent of their body weight at around 4 months of age. The growth rates of all puppies are dependent on the food that they eat. Puppies should be fed to grow at an average, rather than a maximum, growth rate. Compared to smaller-sized puppies, large breed puppies need restricted levels of fat and calcium to moderate their rate of growth. Controlling the fat level and total calories in the food for these puppies may help reduce the risk of developmental bone and joint problems. Calcium: Excessive calcium intake increases the likelihood of skeletal problems. It is also recommended that calcium supplements not be fed with any commercial pet food for growth. These nutrients help maintain healthy joints and cartilage because large breed dogs are more likely to put stress on their joints due to their size. Mastiffs, Labs ,and all the other large and giant breeds that we love can benefit from precisely balanced nutrition to live their lives to the fullest. UKC Classification: Herding Dog To prevent over-guarding and aggressive behavior, German shepherd dogs should have socialization and obedience training at a young age. German shepherd dogs reach a maximum of about 25 inches in height, and they weigh up to about 95 pounds 41 kilograms. He is a well-proportioned dog. The head is broad and tapers handsomely to a sharp muzzle. The ears are rather large and stand erect. The back is level and muscular, and the tail is bushy and curves downward. The coat is thick and rough and may be black, tan, black and tan or gray. The coat should be harsh and of medium length; however, long-coated individuals occur often. The breed lives about years. Personality: German shepherd dogs get along well with children and other pets if raised with them, but in keeping with their guarding instincts, they tend to be leery of strangers. The breed is considered to be smart and easy to train. Some poorly bred German shepherd dogs can be high-strung and nervous. Coupled with poor socialization and inadequate training, over guarding and aggressive behavior are risks. Living With: Because German shepherd dogs are large and powerful and have strong guarding instincts, great care should be taken to purchase German shepherds from reputable breeders. Poorly bred dogs are more likely to be nervous. To prevent over guarding and aggressive behavior, German shepherd dogs should be carefully socialized from a young age and be obedience trained. They should be with the family and continually exposed under supervision to people and other pets around the neighborhood; they should not be confined to a kennel or backyard either alone or with other dogs. German shepherd dogs are active and like to have something to do. They need ample exercise daily; otherwise, they can get into mischief or become high-strung. The dog sheds heavily about twice yearly, and the rest of the time sheds a lesser amount continually. To control shedding and keep the coat nice, brush at least a few times a week. History: German shepherd dogs are, as their name implies, a breed that originated in Germany. They were developed beginning in the late s by crossing various herding breeds. The breed was subjected to stringent selection and it progressed quickly. In the United Kingdom, the dogs are known as Alsatians because fanciers of the breed there wanted to protect the dog from anti-German sentiments after World War I. German shepherd dogs were introduced in the United States by soldiers returning home from World War I. The breed caught the public eye because of movie stars Strongheart and later, Rin Tin Tin. The first guide dogs were German shepherd dogs. Today, they are one of the most popular dogs in America. The German shepherd dog is a herding breed known for its courage, loyalty and guarding instincts. This breed makes an excellent guard dog, police dog, military dog, guide dog for the blind and search and rescue dog. For many families, the German shepherd is also a treasured family pet. Related Pet Care Articles. They are one of the most recognizable breeds on the planet, are known for their excellence in military and are often fed like a canine athlete depending on the workload. On average, a German Shepherd dog lives about 12 years. In order to extend their lifespan as long as possible, you need to pick the best dog food for German Shepherds that will cater to this canine's individual needs, ensure preventative health care plan is in place, and have a general plan for their physical and mental stimulation. There are a lot of best German Shepherd dog food reviews online, but the problem with some of those is that they do not address the specific requirements of this breed, which is mostly due to their resting metabolism and activity level as working dogs. As with any breed, you'll have to update your German Shepherd's diet depending on his age, activity level and health condition. German Shepherd puppies require much different nutrients than senior dogs, and GSDs that are working dogs need to eat more calories per day with a specific protein to fat to carbohydrate ratio with added vitamins and minerals. The best thing that you can do for your GSD is to work with your veterinarian or a canine nutritionist, which will help you find not only the best German Shepherd dog food, but a brand of pet food that's perfect specifically for your individual dog. This is an ongoing process. Your pet's diet will likely change numerous times over the course of his life. While food is one of the keys to a healthy GSD, play time and exercise are especially important for this dog breed. Dog owners looking to adopt a GSD should know is that a German Shepherd is a very high energy animal that requires daily exercise; it's non-negotiable if you want to have a healthy dog. The GSD will keep you on your toes, ready for anything. And you better be game! With this out of the way, let's talk about how to feed a German Shepherd for health, what is the best dog food for a German Shepherd dog, and what are their nutritional needs. Remember that no article on the internet, including this one, can replace a consultation with a vet. German Shepherd dogs tend to require more calories than the average large-breed dog. This is attributed to their high energy level which we've discussed above. However, it is possible for some German Shepherds to be lazy and prone to obesity. This is especially true if the dog is older or has an underlying health condition that causes excess weight gain. It is important to not overfeed GSDs and feed the best dog food diet for German Shepherds that is appropriate for their life stage and health condition. Below, I will take a look at the three life stages and two common health conditions of German Shepherds and the type of dog food they will require at that point. These are my most recommended brands, but we'll also take a look at the best German Shepherd dog food reviews from pet owners to see what they have to say after switching to a new diet. German Shepherd Puppies Large-breed German Shepherd puppies are more susceptible to malnutrition and developmental orthopedic disease compared to small-breed pups. Many GSD owners are familiar with diseases that are common to German Shepherds, which can include: hip dysplasia panosteitis hypertrophic osteodystrophy HOD While there is a genetic component to these diseases, there are significant nutritional risk factors that play a part during puppyhood in GSDs. In particular, these risk factors are rapid growth and excess dietary calcium intake. It is important to find the best dog food for German Shepherds that provides just enough of the right balance of nutrients — not too much, and not too little. Because German Shepherd is a large working dog, large-breed specific puppy dog foods are a great safeguard to help prevent these issues in GSDs. Here are my two favorite choices to recommend to owners: 1. GSDs are a more slowly maturing breed, and it is recommended to feed this puppy food until your German Shepherd puppy is 15 months of age. The calorie content and mineral balance in Royal Canine's German Shepherd puppy food are optimal for preventing developmental orthopedic diseases. It's easily one of the favorite of German Shepherd owners and my top recommended best dog food for German Shepherd puppies. Reading the reviews of this dog food, it's clear that a large majority of GSD owners are satisfied with the results from this dog food, but not all. This is why it's important to consult with your vet beforehand. Their large-breed puppy formula has been tweaked over the years, but provides consistent quality nutrition to promote healthy growth in German Shepherds puppies. It's one of my favorite best dog food for German Shepherd puppies because it's fortified with omega-3 fatty acids like DHA and EPA to promote healthy brain, joint and skin development. I've previously talked about Hill's Science as one of my best vet recommended dog food brands in general due to their dedication to precise nutrition and the large variety of formulas they offer to dog owners. Looking at the opinions on this brand, it appears that most dog owners are also very satisfied with this popular dog food brand. Adult German Shepherds If you are looking for the best dog food for an adult German Shepherd dog, or are transitioning from puppy food to adult dog food, I especially recommend consulting with a veterinarian in this case. Then, you can decide which Maintenance adult diet is best. Some possible high-quality dog foods for adult German Shepherds are: 3. It is designed to help maintain lean, strong muscles and healthy bones. Additives and vitamins in this formulation support healthy joints. It promotes nutrient absorption and healthy digestion in large breed adult dogs like GSDs. It's a reasonably priced dog food for German Shepherds, and the nutritional balance is perfect for them. The brand is popular among GSD owners, with a large majority praising the formula. However, as I'm reading more responses , some owners seem to have switched to the below mentioned Royal Canin brand due to changes in the dog's coat. Their different dog food formulas meet the nutritional needs of some of the most popular breeds. This food is specially designed for GSDs over 15 months of age, and it's one of the best dog foods for German Shepherds. The unique design of the kibble has a harder texture than most similar dog food brands, and the size and shape encourage GSD to chew. This is ideal for the German Shepherd because they have a long snout, strong teeth and extremely powerful jaws. This food is also formulated to support proper digestion and maintain the health of the skin, coat, bones and joints. As a GSD ages, their nutritional requirements change as well. Joints start to ache and mental function can start to decline. Active ingredients in my top best dog foods for senior German Shepherds should help your dog go strong for as long as possible. However, additional supplementation such as fish oil for dogs may be a good idea as well. They aren't the cheapest best dog food for German Shepherds, but this manufacturer has a great track record for quality products and high quality control standards. Lamb is the first ingredient in this formula, as the protein amino acids helps to maintain strong muscles and bones in seniors. This dog food brand also contains glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate for healthy joints, and a high level of antioxidants, which can help support proper cell function in aging dogs. However, be mindful that while glucosamine and chondroitin are helpful for senior dogs' joints, the amount added in any dog food is very small, which probably doesn't have a big impact; additional dog joint supplementation may be good. That said, the reviews of this dog food brand have been glowing so far. Royal Canin German Shepherd Breed Health Nutrition Adult This adult formula for health nutrition is not the same as the one I've mentioned above from Royal Canine, but it's one of the best dog foods for German Shepherd that's aged between 15 months of age to years of age. Royal Canin provides the right balance of nutrients to optimize a lean body condition over a lifetime. Once again, the unique design of the kibble has a harder texture than most other similar dog food brands, therefore, its shape and size encourages chewing in German Shepherds. Similar to the above mentioned Royal Canin formula, this dog food is also formulated to support proper digestion and maintain the health of the skin, coat, bones and joints. Underweight German Shepherds Some German shepherd dogs tend to be on the thinner side and may have digestive issues from time to time. This unique formulation is easy to digest and contains helpful ingredients like omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA and Vitamin E as well as other antioxidants to promote a healthy gut and healthy skin. Chicken, apples, carrots and cranberries make this diet tasty for most dogs — tempting even for the pickiest of eaters. This diet does not contain any artificial colors, preservatives or flavoring, obviously, and the reviews of this popular dog food brand are largely positive , particularly when it comes to German Shepherds that are picky eaters and thus, underweight. German Shepherds with Sensitive Stomachs The German Shepherd dog, like many pure-bred dogs, can be predisposed to certain diseases. Some of these diseases may require a special diet for the GSD. Specifically, if you have concerns about his digestive health, work closely with your veterinarian to make sure your dog gets what he needs and hopefully, a proper diagnosis. Notable diseases that are prevalent in this breed and which may affect the type of best dog food for German Shepherds you choose include: inflammatory bowel disease IBD exocrine pancreatic insufficiency EPI antibiotic-responsive diarrhea ARD formerly known as small intestinal bacterial overgrowth SIBO These diseases tend to cause GSDs to lose weight or not be able to gain weight effectively. There's also an article listing 15 best sensitive stomach dog foods , and a lot of these can be applicable for GSDs with a stomach upset or diseases. Bring those names up with your vet. Ingredients Quality: High-Quality Protein: The primary ingredient should be a high-quality animal protein source, such as chicken, beef, or fish, to support your dog's muscle development and overall health. Whole Grains and Vegetables: Whole grains and vegetables should be included to provide essential carbohydrates, fiber, vitamins, and minerals. Absence of Fillers and Artificial Additives: No Fillers: The best dog food should not contain fillers like corn, soy, or wheat, which offer limited nutritional value and may cause allergies. No Artificial Additives: It should be free from artificial colors, flavors, and preservatives, which can harm your dog's health over time. Meat Meal vs. Whole Meat: Preference for Whole Meat: Whole meat sources are preferred over meat meals or by-products, as they are less processed and retain more nutritional value. Digestibility and Allergen Consideration: Hypoallergenic Options: For dogs with allergies or sensitivities, hypoallergenic options that avoid common allergens like poultry or grains should be available. High Digestibility: The dog food should be highly digestible to ensure your pet absorbs the maximum nutrients from each meal. Life Stage Appropriateness: Age and Size-Specific Formulations: The best dog food should offer formulations tailored to your dog's life stage puppy, adult, senior and size small, medium, large. Transparency and Sourcing: Transparent Labeling: Brands should provide transparent information about ingredient sourcing and processing methods. Sustainable and Ethical Sourcing: A commitment to sustainable and ethical sourcing of ingredients reflects a brand's responsibility toward animal welfare and the environment. Health Benefits and Special Considerations: Support for Special Health Needs: The best dog food may offer formulations to address specific health concerns, such as joint health, dental care, or weight management. Customer Feedback and Reviews: Positive User Experiences: Customer feedback and reviews are valuable indicators of a product's performance, safety, and palatability. Price and Value: Affordability: The cost of the dog food should be reasonable and commensurate with its quality and ingredients, offering good value for pet owners. What is the difference between dry and wet dog food? Dry dog food kibble is convenient, has a longer shelf life, and can help with dental health. Wet dog food contains more moisture and can be more palatable for picky eaters. Some owners choose to feed a combination for variety. Is homemade dog food a good option? Homemade dog food can be an option but requires careful research and balance to ensure your dog gets all the necessary nutrients. Consulting with a veterinarian or veterinary nutritionist is recommended. How can I tell if a dog food is of high quality? Look for high-quality protein sources, whole grains and vegetables, minimal fillers and additives, and adherence to AAFCO guidelines for complete and balanced nutrition. Checking customer reviews and consulting experts can also help. Should I choose a dog food based on my dog's breed? While some breed-specific formulas exist, it's more important to consider your dog's individual needs, age, and size when selecting dog food. What should I do if my dog has food allergies or sensitivities? If your dog has allergies or sensitivities, consult your veterinarian for advice. They may recommend hypoallergenic or limited-ingredient dog foods. Is grain-free dog food a better choice? Grain-free dog food isn't necessarily better. While some dogs may benefit from grain-free options, it's essential to ensure the food still provides balanced nutrition, as some grain-free diets have been associated with certain health issues. How often should I feed my dog, and in what portion sizes? Feeding frequency and portion sizes depend on your dog's age, size, and activity level. Puppies typically require more frequent meals. Follow the feeding guidelines provided on the dog food packaging and adjust based on your dog's needs. Can I mix different brands or types of dog food? Mixing different brands or types of dog food can be done, but it should be done gradually to avoid digestive upset. Consult your veterinarian for guidance on the best way to transition your dog to a new diet. Should I be concerned about recalls when choosing dog food? Yes, it's important to stay informed about recalls. Check the FDA and manufacturer websites regularly for recall information. Brands with a history of recalls may be worth avoiding. What is the role of my veterinarian in selecting dog food? Your veterinarian can provide valuable guidance on selecting the right dog food based on your pet's specific needs, health conditions, and dietary requirements. How can I ensure my dog stays hydrated when feeding dry dog food? Always provide access to clean, fresh water. Wetting the dry food or incorporating wet food into the diet can also increase moisture intake. Can I give my dog human food as part of their diet? While some human foods are safe for dogs, it's essential to know which ones are and to avoid potentially toxic foods. Always consult with your veterinarian before adding human food to your dog's diet. Remember that each dog is unique, and their dietary needs may vary.
