It is very important to keep in mind that English bulldogs are somewhat different to most breeds. And correct feeding technics are of utmost importance during and after their full development. Your English bulldog puppy does not know anything about nutrition. He only knows what tastes good. It is up to you to know what and how to feed your buddy, so he will get everything he needs to stay healthy and happy. Best Diet for English Bulldogs Best Nutrients for English Bulldog Puppies Your English bulldog puppy needs proteins, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins and minerals for uptime growth and health Your puppy uses proteins for growth and repair of muscles, bones and other bodily tissues. They are also used for production of antibodies, enzymes and hormones. Vitamins and minerals participate in muscle and nerve function, bone growth, healing, metabolism and fluid balance. English bulldogs also need plenty of fresh, clean water. Adequate water intake also helps prevent formation of urinary stones, which is a potential problem for this breed. Food Brands for English Bulldogs We recommend to new English bulldog families to avoid drastic changes in the food of the puppies. We recommend the puppy keeps using the same food the breeder used before delivery. In our case, we like to use Royal Canin Bulldog Puppy. We have used several other brands over the years. And, so far, Royal Canin has worked great for our puppies and adults. When feeding our English bulldog puppy, we take into consideration several factors. Such as the amount of protein and fat they should receive in the first few weeks of age. There are other brands in the market that may provide the same or similar amount of protein and fat. However, you should consider important things such as ingredients of the food, allergies it might cause. As professional breeders of English bulldogs, we always let our clients know about the food we give to our puppies. In addition to other supplements that we use. That way, the new owners of the English bulldog puppies can continue with the same process. But, we do understand that a lot of times people may decide to go a different route. Both for the type of food and feeding technics. Sometimes, based on what they may consider, it is correct or better for their English bulldogs. Or perhaps after receiving veterinarian advice. Our recommendation is to continue to use the one we use. Feeding Frequency for English bulldogs The number of times you feed an English bulldog puppy is also very important. The younger the puppy is, the more often one has to feed the puppy. For breeders, it is a lot of work due. Mainly due to the fact that we have to care for the puppies since day one. We have to rigorously continue feeding them at least every two 2 hours. Usually, when we release our puppies; they will be at least eight 8 weeks old. And they will be eating solid food. At this stage, it is recommended to feed the puppies three 3 times a day. Once in the morning, afternoon, and early evening. Sometimes due to a matter of schedule or advice from friends, breeders or veterinarians; families will feed the puppy two 2 times a day. This will make things a little easy for the family training the English bulldog. If this is the case, the correct amount of food should be provided to the puppy. Always based on their body weight as well as the age of the puppy. A feeding guide or table should be available to you on the bag of food you use. In most cases it is recommended for an English bulldog to be on the puppy formula for the first year of life and then a gradual change to an adult formula containing the same nutrients should be given. It is important to keep in mind that if you as an English bulldog puppy owner encounter any issues with your dog such as allergies or other common illnesses among bulldogs, then veterinarian advice should be taken. Should I give supplements to English Bulldog Puppies? This food will provide the puppy with the nutrients needed to have a long, healthy life. But as breeders, we use other things to supplement the diet of our English bulldogs so that we can keep them away as much as possible from common illnesses among them. The use of the right type of supplements from an early stage in the development of the dog is key when raising English bulldogs than with a lot of other breeds. This is due to the fact that English bulldogs have a weaker skeletal system and a lower immune system than other breeds. Having the presence of supplements will help the puppy to develop into a healthier adult. Eggs, cod liver oil, chicken breast, some vegetables are also great for them. Along with the food we use, we also recommend the multi vitamin NuVet. It helps with a lot of the common issues the English bulldog breed encounters during their life. For detail information on NuVet and how to order instructions, please visit our website and click on the link on top that says NuVet. If you think you still have questions about the right food to feed your English bulldog puppy or the correct supplement or multi vitamins you can use; please feel free to contact us. Remember that English bulldogs are the best breed in the world; therefor quality food, treats and supplements are ideal when having them as pets. Share this post.

He is sweet, silly, snuggly, and ridiculously cute. He is just about everything that is good in a dog. Petey loves to entertain himself and others with his playful attitude and his puppy-like antics. He loves to start each day with a happy morning wiggle dance, and he will perform encores throughout the day. Petey is an affectionate fellow. He only gives occasional kisses, but loves to get close to you; nuzzle you; lean; poke at you with his front feet as boxers do; and when he is feeling silly which is often! He is accustomed to sleeping in bed with a person and snuggling all night. Truthfully, he can get away without it inside the home because he is an easy, good boy to live with! However, he is overly excited out in the world, on walks, in the car, and seeing new people and animals, so he would benefit from some guidance to help him behave calmly in those situations. At this point, meeting people is extremely exciting, but meeting dogs is just too overwhelming for him to handle. Petey had a dramatic entrance into rescue, as he was pulled from the shelter while he was suffering from bloat a medical emergency fatal within hours. Pulling a dog in critical condition, when we know the cost will be tremendous and a good outcome far from guaranteed, requires a leap of faith. The shelter vet bought Petey time by puncturing his stomach to decompress the gas that was building up. Within an hour of first being contacted by the shelter, a flurry of communication had occurred, an NCBR volunteer darted to the shelter, delivered Petey to an emergency vet, and Petey was being prepped for surgery. But we are overjoyed to say that Petey made it through surgery and is now recovering in the hospital. If not, here is the form! His love and compassion for Boxers was felt by those who had the pleasure of spending time with him. Ken loved sports and spending time with friends. He also collected sports memorabilia and other collectibles like Hot Wheels. He truly loved Milo, featured in the the photo with him. Every time we received a message from him he included a picture of him and Milo. He never gave up hope that some treatment would be the ultimate cure. He worked as long as he could and made his journey to the light in late June. His weakened system just couldn't fight any longer. He will be deeply missed by WCBR, and we wish his family peace with his loss. Thank you to so many who have donated to WCBR in his memory. Ken will forever be in our hearts. We need your help. The number of Boxers being surrendered by families and in the shelters is overwhelming. We continue to receive owner surrenders a week, along with multiple pleas from surrounding shelters for Boxers in need. So many Boxer are coming from families that are no longer able to financially care for them, just don't want them, many are dealing with illness or the Boxer's pet parent has passed away, and many just are moving. Without the funding or foster homes, sadly we have to turn away these surrenders. Please Foster, Fund or be a Forever Home. Petey Donor Spotlight: Doreen Murotsune For many of us who give our hearts, time, or dollars to rescue, we are first inspired by the love of a single special dog. Hana belonged to friends of Doreen, but Doreen and her boxer, Benjamin, fell in love with her. Benjamin and Hana were best friends, and Benjamin was always on the lookout for Hana and ready to protect her from any yappy Chihuahua who tried to intimidate her. In addition to being an active Strut Your Mutt teammate for each of the past 5 years, Doreen browses the boxers in our care and sponsors many dogs whose stories warm her heart. She not only sponsors dogs with single or repeat financial gifts, but also inquires about dogs with prescription diet needs and then purchases those diets on an autoship schedule, having the food mailed directly to foster homes. Breeding these pooches with other types of dogs minimizes the health problems that the mutt will encounter, without sacrificing their most important trait: their absolute cuteness. Top 22 Bulldog Mix Dog Breeds: 1. They are as affectionate as Bulldogs and as fun-loving as Beagles, making them the perfect family pet. They typically weigh between 30 and 50 pounds, and they adore all life forms, including other pets. This dog is a mix between an English Bulldog and a Jack Russell Terrier, so it usually only weighs 30 pounds at most. These are big dogs, weighing as much as pounds. They tend to look like Rotties but with more of a smushed-in nose. You get a dog that tops out at about 60 pounds but is also long and lean. Bullwhip dogs love to run and have a stubborn streak, so be prepared to spend a great deal of time training them. Be careful bringing them into a home with smaller pets, though, because Whippets have a high prey drive. Mixing their genes extends their lifespan considerably, though, and these dogs often live for 12 years or more. They are massive, though, and regularly tip the scales at pounds. They can weigh up to 50 pounds and are not big fans of exercise, so be careful not to let their waistline expand too much. These dogs are usually fairly healthy, but they are prone to back problems, which makes it all the more important that you keep their weight in check. That said, these dogs are surprisingly energetic, so you may need a big backyard in order to own one. They can weigh as much as 90 pounds, so when they get the zoomies, your entire house can be vulnerable. The Bull-Aussie tends to take after their Shepherd heritage more, so expect to spend a great deal of time tuckering these dogs out. Fortunately, they love having jobs to do. They love their families and will do anything to protect them. These dogs are fairly active, but many have a brachycephalic face, which can limit their ability to breathe and dissipate heat. English Bullhuahua English Bulldog x Chihuahua A post shared by Peyton Roque peytzz To get a Bullhuahua, you have to cross English Bulldogs with Chihuahuas , and the result is a surprisingly big 40—pound lap dog. Their personalities are often friendly and welcoming, but they can have a strong territorial streak like Chihuahuas. The adorable English Bullpit, of course. Walking around at close to 90 pounds, these dogs are strong and brave and make terrific guard dogs. Oh, and be prepared for the shedding. Both parent breeds are heavy droolers, so we hope that you have a good mop. Just know that Akitas can be prone to aggression, and both breeds are known for being stubborn. Catahoula Bulldog English Bulldog x Catahoula Image Credit: haydnd, Adobe Stock Catahoula Bulldogs vary wildly in terms of size; some only weigh 40 pounds or so, while others tip the scales at over pounds. Regardless, you should have a stocky, muscular dog on your hands. These are laidback dogs, and while they enjoy a nice game of tag, they see no need for excessive amounts of exercise. English Bulldogs are typically neither of those things. They often weigh around 50 pounds and are not nearly as smart as their Poodle forebears. They make up for it by being incredibly sweet, however. They often look like a regular Bulldog that somehow got into a box of Rogaine. However, they make up for their lack of security skills with a fair amount of intelligence. They are extremely brachycephalic and are often prone to a whole host of health issues like respiratory problems, heat intolerance, and joint concerns. That generally means cutting back on their rations, because this is one breed that does not like to work out. These medium-sized 40—pound dogs are loving and sociable, but they need a ton of physical stimulation. A Mix for Everyone If you love English Bulldogs but are put off by their propensity for health problems not to mention how expensive purebred puppies can be , consider adopting one of the mixes on this list instead. Every dog listed above is cute as a button and generally healthier than a purebred English Bulldog. Plus, they still retain most of the qualities that make Bulldogs so sought after. Even better, most of these mixes are rare enough that you can have a dog that truly stands out. Unfortunately, because of their reputation, which is not good, these dogs and all their mixes are not so popular. However, this reputation is solely based on the poor training and socialization that these dogs receive, and if that is done properly, these pups will also be calm and collected, friendly, and overall good companions. They are known for being big droolers also, which you should be aware of. Bullkitas are best suited for families that have a stable lifestyle, older children, and no other pets since they are not that good with small kids or pets. This mix requires stability and a moderate amount of exercise and playtime. Other than that, they are strong dogs that are really loyal and playful most of the time. No matter what they are called, they are always super cute, docile, and friendly. However, unfortunately, these pups are not a healthy version of English Bulldogs at all. They usually inherit a lot of health problems from both parent breeds, such as respiratory issues or proneness to overheating. When it comes to their appearance, they have the famous snout and wrinkles, and their coat can either come in various colors fawn, brindle, white or be spotted with more colors. These mixes can be around pounds if they take more of the Rottweiler genes, so that also means that they will need a lot of good dog food to keep them healthy and strong. Usually, these pups are extremely lovable and enjoy spending time with their family. The only thing is that sometimes, they can have a stubborn streak in them, which makes them a bit difficult to train. They are energetic dogs that need a significant amount of playtime and exercise to keep them happy, which is very important if you do choose to get this mix. They have become very popular in recent years due to their lovable and playful temperament. These dogs have quite an odd appearance, and are often described as funny-looking. This is because they often inherit the flat face of the English Bulldog, and the elongated body with short legs that is signature for Basset Hounds. They require a lot of exercise and playtime to stay happy, so daily walks should not be missed. If you have a garden, it will be perfect for them because they will have a place to run around. These dogs with a cute little name are usually very energetic and alert pups. They are friendly, intelligent, and playful, but are more recommended for owners who have experience with dogs and have an active lifestyle. They will definitely need proper training and socialization because if they inherit a lot of Husky genes, they can be prone to some behavioral issues. To prevent your pup from barking, chewing, or scratching, start early with training and positive reinforcement. English Bullwhip: English Bulldog X The Whippet Photo from: jessdiekmann The English Bullwhip is a designer dog that is usually smaller in size, though this depends greatly on the dominant parent genes. Sometimes, they can grow to be medium-sized pups. However, they are quite active dogs that perform really well at sports. They do require proper training and socialization to prevent some behavioral issues that can surface, like aggression. They are great family dogs — intelligent, social, friendly, and protective. Thankfully, they are quite easy to train, which is a good thing if you are not an expert at training. They will get along really well with other pets if you have them, and also with other humans, either in your home or outside. Their appearance may vary a lot depending on which parent gene is more dominant since they tend to lean toward one parent rather than an equal mix of both parent breeds. Although these dogs are pretty laid-back and gentle, if they inherit more Corgi genes, they will have significant herding instincts, which means that they will not exactly be good for small children since it could happen that they start to herd them. They are quite intelligent, devoted, and work-oriented dogs. They perform best if they have some job to do, so they will be good as watchdogs and guards. To keep their coat in good condition, regular grooming sessions will be needed. Also, since both parent breeds have a somewhat willful nature — proper training, positive reinforcement, and mental stimulation will be keys to a happy and healthy Bull Shepherd. English Frenchie: English Bulldog X French Bulldog Photo from: dalethebulldog Most people will confuse these two breeds as one, but these are two different variations of Bulldog-type dogs. When you cross them, you get an English Frenchie. However, a big problem with this mixed breed is that they have a lot of health issues just like most brachycephalic breeds. Because of that, they are not suited for hot climates since they will probably suffer from overheating. Other than that, they also may possess a little stubborn streak, which makes them a bit difficult to train, and will require an owner who knows what they are doing. They can vary in size from medium- to large-sized dogs. The most impressive feature of these pups is their appearance, which will definitely turn heads wherever they go. Not only can they have a fascinating, colorful coat, but also different colored eyes, which will steal many hearts. Their coat can be solid or have different patterns such as brindle, leopard, or merle. Bulleneeses are often described as gentle, loving, and protective. Since the Pyrenees breed is an energetic dog breed, the Bullenees will probably be more active than Bulldogs, but not as much as their active parent. They will also probably be great for families with children, but they will require an experienced owner, and those families that are more active and able to provide them with lots of exercise. Generally, they will inherit an athletic and strong build from their Great Dane parent. This mix is known for being extremely affectionate. They enjoy spending time with you more than anything, so if you choose this dog, you must expect them to be mostly by your side. They are not vocal dogs at all, but are really easy to train, and they pick up new tricks quickly. Bull Danes have a great ability to read people very well, so they will be able to judge whether a new person at your house is an actual friend and a nice person. Bullchow: English Bulldog X Chow Chow Photo from: reggieray When you look at these two breeds, you immediately notice how completely different they are, so it is no surprise that their mix is very unique and different looking. If you are searching for something like this, then the fluffy Bullchow could be the perfect solution. However, since they can get really big and powerful, they are usually recommended for more experienced owners and people with older children. It is always interesting to see what personality will prevail in this crossing. They may either look more like the Bulldog parent or the Dachshund one, and the same goes for their temperament. One thing is for sure — Bulldachs are going to be small dogs that are completely devoted to their humans. Since both breeds are friendly and intelligent, they will be easy to socialize and train. Like many other dogs, they require early socialization. Even though they can be really loving and affectionate with their family, because of their guard-dog gene, they can also be aloof with strangers and somewhat aggressive with other dogs. Your Bulldober will also require a high amount of exercise, so walks or regular visits to a park will be necessary for keeping him healthy and happy. Even though they are huge dogs, they are really affectionate and love to cuddle, so more often than not, they will find themselves enjoying your lap. They have really high energy levels, so you should plan on taking them for long walks regularly. Although they are intelligent dogs, they have proved to be a bit challenging to train since they like to be leaders of the group, so they will require a strong and firm owner who knows how to deal with them. Well, no surprise here — Golden Bulldogs are also very much the best mix as well. This mix combines the good looks and sweet personality of both parent breeds, making a handsome dog with a cheerful and sweet temperament that many are looking for. Many Golden Bulldog mixes inherit the wrinkly face and coat markings of the English Bulldog. They are really loyal, eager to please, and great with children, which makes them wonderful family pets. Golden Bulldogs are extremely easy to train, and therefore, many of them work as service dogs. They usually inherit a broad, wrinkled head, and a powerful body. Although they are not as big as their Mastiff parent, they are still quite large and will require a lot of space. Their fur usually comes in fawn, red, brown, or brindle. They are usually courageous and protective dogs, but also affectionate and good with children. They will probably be a bit cautious with strangers, but they are not seen as threatening; however, early socialization and positive reinforcement will be beneficial to them and prevent bad habits from forming. Because of their Kelpie genes, they can also be very good working dogs that do well in many fields. Despite this, their personality is very different from how they look. They are actually sweet-natured, friendly, playful, and attention seekers. Due to their surprising personality, breeders further developed the English Bulldog by breeding it with other canines. Below are some of the best English Bulldog mixes you can find today! They also got their long muzzles from the Beagle since it is one of those breeds with long noses. It is thought that this feisty hybrid was developed in the United States within the last 20 years as a fighting dog. Over the years, this mix has been bred to become a companion pet. Despite its stubbornness, the Bull Jack may thrive in an apartment if given adequate exercise. This dog is also super social and needs tons of love and affection. They can form a deep attachment to one family member to the point of obsession. Thus, you must not leave them alone, as this will trigger separation anxiety. Originally, this breed was developed to be aggressive in order to win bull-baiting competitions. However, it was outlawed in , so breeders worked to modify the breed and repurpose it by breeding out the aggression. Families commonly describe this breed as a family companion who is willing to accompany them wherever they go. They are alert and always on the lookout. The Rottweiler English Bulldog mix can get along well with families and children of all ages. However, because of its large size, similar to the Rottweiler , additional caution should be taken in the presence of younger children. This breed has a sweet and submissive disposition and prefers to live in peace with its family. This breed is an occasional barker but is not known to engage in excessive barking. When it comes to other dogs, the English Bull Springer is generally friendly, but it does need some time and patience with small animals. While the English Bull Springer welcomes visitors, they may be wary of strangers. To keep your English Bull Springer from being too frightened, early training and socialization are essential. The consequence of this mixture is a dog that is less delicate and protective than a Whippet but more nimble and active than a Bulldog. Whippet English Bulldog mixes also make great sporting dogs for activities like agility, lure coursing, and flyball. To avoid behavioral concerns like aggression, these dogs require extensive training and socialization. With this, Bullwhips can make great family dogs in homes with small children that have been taught proper interaction with pets. These breeds are strong, muscular dogs that can appear to be very intimidating to those who meet them. But actually, Mountain Bulldogs are known to be quite friendly and playful, making them an ideal companion for families with other dogs and young kids. Although these are adaptable breeds, they are better suited to a cool climate due to their medium length and dense coats. With the tiny legs of a Corgi and the traits of a Bulldog, many of this breed end up appearing like mini-versions of their purebred Bulldog ancestors. This is especially true when the teacup Corgi is used for breeding. The resulting hybrid would relatively be smaller. Just like other pets, Corgi Bulldog mixes are incredibly friendly and well-behaved when exposed to early socialization and proper training. They enjoy spending time with their family but can also spend time alone if the house is crowded. Corgi Bulldogs make great watchdogs but can be stubborn from time to time. They can also be great family pets but are better suited to homes without small children because the Corgi blood may cause them to herd little kids. This breed inherited the features of both its parent breeds, which are exceptionally intelligent and very athletic compared to other breeds. While Bulldogs are very stocky and muscular, Boxers tend to be taller and leaner depending on their gender. Combining these two breeds resulted in a tall, lean, long, and muscularly built tank of a canine. Despite its appearance, the Boxer English Bulldog mix is gentle as a teddy bear. They are a caring and devoted breed that will want to keep the family safe. They love affection and are happy to both give and receive it. These dogs make great companions for both individuals and families. It is believed that this breed originated in the late s in the United States. Combining the features of the English Bulldog and the Australian Shepherd, they tend to be large-sized dogs with strong, defined muscles. Their legs will be taller than those of their Bulldog parents. Thus, the Bull-Aussie is best suited for an active family that can provide them with lots of attention and activities. These dogs are frequently confused with the Labrabull, which is the hybrid of a Labrador Retriever and a Pit Bull Terrier. Size-wise, the Bullador can be either medium or large. Breeders in North America purposefully blended the two parent breeds to reduce the health risks associated with purebred dogs while also producing an active and pleasant companion dog. Unexpectedly, the demand for Bullador puppies increased, so they continued to breed them. No wonder why they became a hit since they are incredibly sweet and can be an excellent companion for small children and all ages. Normally, the Chihuahua English Bulldog mix is a small to medium-sized breed. These mixed pups are larger than Chihuahuas but smaller than Bulldogs. Their coats are dense and come in a variety of hues, including black, white, tan, and gray. But most Bullhuahuas tend to be fearless like a Chihuahua. This breed is also known as Olde Anglican Bulldogges and is thought to have been developed in the s. Because the Pitbull English Bulldog mix has no breed standard, they can have a wide range of appearances. But most of these breeds have a broad, large head with a large jaw, just like their parent breeds. Despite the fearsome reputation of its parent breeds, English Bullpits are friendly dogs who are kind and welcoming to strangers. Of course, with proper training and early socialization, they can be excellent companions. Since the parent breeds share some similar traits, you can expect that these breeds are brave, confident, and loyal. English Bull Shepherds are also very trainable dogs with a desire to please, a strong work ethic, and an intelligent personality. Neither of the parent breeds likes to be alone, and the same goes for their hybrid puppy. This will also reduce the possibility of separation anxiety. It was developed by the English Bulldog mixed with the Akita. In appearance, the Bullkita is similar to the Akita ; however, in terms of size, it is more likely similar to the English Bulldog. Akita English Bulldog mixes have a combined temperament of both parents. They are known to be aggressive, sociable, and loyal pets. For a better experience with them, early socialization and proper training are advised. These dogs also have a moderate level of energy and will be happy if they are surrounded by people who will interact with them socially and take care of their modest exercise needs. These mixed-breed dogs are incredibly devoted and protective, making them excellent guard dog choices. With its muscular frame and spotted coat, the Catahoula English Bulldog mix has a somewhat intimidating appearance. Despite their looks, these dogs are rarely aggressive. In fact, Catahoula English Bulldog mixes are gentle and sweet animals that are wary of strangers and have a reputation for being sensitive canines. They are also high-energy dogs that demand daily exercise to keep them happy and healthy. The eyes of this breed are well-spaced and brown in color, while their forehead is flattened and covered in strangely wrinkled skin. Despite its huge size, this dog can be incredibly sweet to its owner and small children. They always want to make people around them happy with their goofy personalities. Due to their Shar-Pei bloodline, Bull Peis have heads that appear too huge for their bodies and wrinkly faces. They may only require about 40 to 60 minutes of exercise per day to keep their body fit and healthy. While most are generally healthy, some may be prone to hypothyroidism and patellar luxation. They are family-oriented dogs that bring together the gentle nature of the English Bulldog with the playful personality of the Poodle. They are quite sociable and get along with both children and other animals. The English Boodle can have the intelligence of a Poodle and the stubbornness of an English Bulldog, which means they are quick to pick up commands but not always ready to carry them out. Despite the fact that its parent breeds are members of the American Kennel Club, these mixed-breed dogs do not meet the criteria to be of the same status. Generally, this breed is a medium-sized dog that usually weighs around thirty pounds. The personality of the Bully Tzu is well-suited to its charming and cuddly appearance. They are a free-spirited and happy breed that wants to keep themselves and the people around them happy. Because of its one furry parent breed, the Bully-Tzu will most likely have longer and silkier hair than a standard Bulldog. Thus, this breed will have fairly high demands when it comes to grooming. Shih Tzu English Bulldog mixes are not recommended for people with allergies due to their potentially high amount of shedding. Although they are irresistibly cute, you would really have to keep away from them if you have allergies. As the name suggests, this is relatively smaller than a regular Bulldog, and it is also believed that this hybrid is much healthier. Other than their smaller size, miniature English Bulldogs look almost exactly like their parent breed. They have a smashed-in nose, a broad, short skull, and a low-slung, muscular body. This breed is also the ideal pet for first-time dog owners due to its low maintenance requirements and fun-loving personality. Watch this video if you want to see a Pug English Bulldog mix in action: Ham the bullpug playing fetch .This breed tends to be large but not as large as the Mastiff. They are normally gentle animals when dealing with their families, but if not properly socialized, they can become aggressive to strangers and other pets. The English Neo Bull has to be active for at least 40 to 60 minutes each day to stay healthy. Swimming is a good type of exercise for these dogs since it improves their cardiovascular health as well as their muscle mass. Swimming also reduces joint stress for these dogs. This dog breed is a mixture of an English Bulldog and a Golden Retriever. These two parent breeds look quite different from each other, so when they are mixed to create this designer dog breed, the results are highly varied. However, most of the Golden Bulldogs are seen to have a somewhat muscular build with a wrinkled face similar to the Bulldog and floppy ears, deep chest, and robust neck of the Golden Retriever. As for their personality, it is just as varied as their appearance. They can be sweet and gentle like a Golden Retriever or stubborn and lazy like an English Bulldog. However, they are usually good-natured and make great family pets. This breed originated in Afghanistan and has grown a lot in popularity all over the world. While its ultimate look will vary depending on which parent is dominant, the Bullmatian usually retains most of the English Bulldog qualities and the spotted Dalmatian coat. Bullmatians inherited both positive qualities of their parent breeds, such as being friendly, lovely, sweet, energetic, and a good companion at home. Dalmatian English Bulldog mixes are attention seekers and will love to play with the younger members of the family. Although they are not naturally aggressive, they are willing to protect their loved ones at all costs, making them great watchdogs. They have wrinkled faces and larger snouts than a Bulldog, but they have Dachshund proportions, which means they are slightly longer than tall. The Bulldach can be described as courageous and brave with a strong desire to protect their owners and the things they love. Hence, you should not leave them alone with small children, as any taunting may result in a bite in return. To prevent these incidents, Dachshund English Bulldog mixes should be adequately socialized as puppies to avoid becoming overly frightened and to feel comfortable around people. This is followed by reward-based training to keep them motivated to learn. Typically, they will have the floppy ears of the Basset Hound and the broad body of an English Bulldog. The Bully Basset is probably not your best match if you want a friend who is easy to train. Bully Bassets are generally healthy, but because they are hybrid canines, there is a chance that they will inherit some of the health problems that most commonly affect their parent breeds. This mix is extremely protective of its home and family. They get along well with kids and other pets, but early socialization is recommended to help them develop their morals. However, Free-Lance Bulldogs are not easy to train due to their conservative and stubborn nature. These canines enjoy being the center of attention and love spending time with their owners. To keep them healthy, simply meet their basic daily requirements, and they are good to go. This cross is known to be devoted to family. English Boston-Bulldogs are small to medium-sized dogs with charming and sociable temperaments. In addition, these pups have a robust, sturdy build. They are energetic as puppies, but as they grow older, their energy tends to dial down. They can be sensitive and dislike being ignored or left alone for a longer length of time. Although they will willingly play a game of fetch, this hybrid dog prefers relaxing out with its owner and family. Remember to keep them at a comfortable temperature where they can play and sleep. This breed might suffer from overheating, which can lead to heatstroke. Both parent breeds are brachycephalic, which gives the mix a smushed-in nose. EngAm Bulldog puppies are usually playful and affectionate. These canines will keep you on your toes with their goofy antics and everyday mischief. However, they typically calm down quite a bit as they mature. Some of them might even be prone to extra-long naps, snoring, and falling asleep standing up. Its appearance, size, and weight can vary quite a bit depending on which parent it takes after. The face of an English Bull Dane generally resembles the English Bulldog with a slightly longer muzzle, and the strong athletic build is more likely similar to its other parent breed, the Great Dane. However, they can be either medium-sized dog breeds weighing 50 or 60 pounds or giants weighing up to pounds. Regardless of physical form, the Great Dane English Bulldog mix enjoys pleasing its family and would prefer to spend time with you instead of participating in any sporting or hunting activities. Despite having popular parents, this hybrid is a bit rare in the United States. This designer breed can be rebellious and sometimes very independent. This is a common trait that English Busky inherited from both parents. In training a Husky Bulldog mix, you may need a veteran pet parent to handle them. These Bulldog mixes tend to be nice, loyal, and loving dogs, but they may also be lazy, headstrong, and stubborn. The Bulldog Schnauzer has a unique reaction to exercise. Your puppy will appreciate any sort of stimulation if it has dominant Schnauzer blood. Whereas if the Bulldog parent is more dominant, the resulting hybrid would prefer to lie on the ground and nap. Since there is limited information about this hybrid, it will be challenging to know the standard appearance of Bulldog Schnauzers. However, we can expect some features from the combination of its parent breeds. Unsurprisingly, this hybrid is not recognized by the American Canine Hybrid Club. Also, they are not a particularly popular or common hybrid at this time and may be difficult to find. Usually, they will have the build of a Bull Terrier and some English Bulldog features. In terms of temperament, they are a fun and friendly hybrid that may be aggressive at times. They are also known for their fierce loyalty to their owners and other family members, making them a great companion and a watchdog. English Bull Terriers love going for a walk, playing, or running around the neighborhood. You should keep a watchful eye on them because they are not a dog breed that can tolerate hot weather. Most of these hybrids take the size of the Maltese and the facial features of the English Bulldog. Since both parent breeds are costly dogs, you can expect these English Bulldog Maltese mix puppies to be expensive as well. Another factor that may increase their price is that they are rare and relatively new to the hybrid world. Despite the lack of documentation, most Bulltese mixes are known to be dedicated and loyal companions. They are also lively and playful but may display characteristics of stubbornness. These hybrids are clearly one-of-a-kind and are very powerful. Like all hybrids, you must look at the parents to get a fair idea of how they would likely look. Usually, English Chow Bulldog inherits most of their physical characteristics from their English Bulldog heritage. On the other hand, their temperament comes from their Chow Chow heritage. They tend to be aloof with strangers and aggressive with other dogs. Nonetheless, they are devoted and protective of their family. Despite the fact that the two-parent breeds have long histories, this new breed has an undocumented origin. The Doberman Bulldog is bright, loyal, and attentive, making them an excellent guard dog. While they may be hostile toward strangers and distant toward other dogs, if they are socialized early on, they will be kind and gentle. Running and walking long distances are not recommended for your Doberman Bulldogs. They often suffer from cardiomyopathy , which causes them to breathe heavily and drool excessively. However, they may need 45 minutes of physical and mental stimulation per day to maintain their health and well-being. Although they are both from the molosser breed, they are separately distinct. Meanwhile, its face is more like a Staffordshire Terrier with a broad skull, distinct cheek muscles, and a short foreface with a black nose. Another factor that influences their pricing is the genetic makeup of the other breed. If you have a mixed breed dog with a rare genetic makeup, it will be significantly more expensive than the standard pricing. Your spending will not end here, though. You also need to include some additional expenses for this mix. Since a mix can take on any combination of traits from their parents, you want to make sure you ask the breeder about the other parent breed in the mix. Should an English Bulldog Mix take after their Bulldog parent, they will be sweet-natured, affectionate, and playful dogs that love being with their families. English Bulldogs are companion breeds that are known for being sweethearts. As long as they are socialized properly, they tend to be excellent with children, other dogs, and other pets. Although watchful, they are even agreeable to strangers once they have been introduced. If the other parent breed has a similar temperament, then you should be able to expect the same from an English Bulldog Mix. You still want to talk to the breeder about the other parent as they are likely to introduce their own quirks. Meeting the mother in person can give you an idea of her temperament and the behavior she is modeling for her puppies. Although the breeder should have started some training and socialization, it is your responsibility to continue training and socializing a puppy once you get them home to ensure they grow into a well-rounded, well-behaved dog. Although English Bulldogs adapt to most living situations, they are sensitive to hot and cold, and are particularly sensitive to heat. They also do not like to be left alone for long periods of time. This makes them a moderately adaptable dog breed. The other parent breed could introduce some traits that affect adaptability so you do want to ask the breeder about them. A mix could inherit conditions common to neither of their parent breeds, one of them, or even both of them. From the English Bulldog, potential health concerns to be aware of in an English Bulldog Mix include hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, Entropion, and Cherry Eye. Reputable breeders will screen their dogs to prevent passing issues to puppies, so make sure you are asking about the health history of both of the parents. Although English Bulldogs can be stubborn, they are generally eager to please and are highly trainable dogs. They tend to be a good fit for owners of all experience levels and respond well to consistent training that is focused on positive reward and praise. If the other parent breed is also highly trainable, then you should be able to expect the same from an English Bulldog Mix. The other parent breed could also introduce the potential for an English Bulldog Mix that is more difficult to train. Mixed-breed dogs can inherit a coat that is a carbon copy of one of their parents or they can end up with a coat that is truly a mix of both. Should an English Bulldog Mix end up with a Bulldog coat, they will shed moderately year-round, require brushing a couple of times a week, and the occasional bath. If they have face wrinkles, you will need to make sure they are clean and dry regularly to prevent skin irritation. Cutting nails once or twice a month keeps them from growing too long. Ear checks on a weekly basis with careful ear cleanings as needed helps prevent ear infections. Daily brushing or use of an enzyme toothpaste is ideal dental care for dogs and can help prevent painful dental diseases later in life. English Bulldogs tend to be lower-energy breeds that only require daily walks and some playtime to be happy. But, they will be energetic when they play and might be up for more activity if you are. The other parent breed can affect this. If they are a low-energy breed, then you can expect an English Bulldog Mix to be the same. If the other parent breed requires more daily activity, then you will need to be prepared for that potential range in an English Bulldog Mix puppy. Because they may still be a brachycephalic dog breed, they can overheat, so you want to be careful of overexertion. There are many safe ways to exercise flat-faced dogs to help your English Bulldog Mix get the exercise they need. Fully-grown English Bulldogs usually stand inches tall and weigh pounds. The other parent breed can have a big effect on this, especially if they are the mother. An English Bulldog generally lives for years. Although the other parent breed could affect this slightly, you should be able to expect a similar life span in an English Bulldog Mix. Featured English Bulldog Mix Article.

By Barri J. Morrison, DVM on Jun. Today, the German Shepherd is one of the most popular dog breed in the United States. They are in the herding breed group, which means they are high-energy and love having a job or an outlet for regular exercise. They are known for their confidence, loyalty, and bravery, as well as their ability to thrive with expert levels of dog training and obedience. German Shepherds are commonly used as working dogs in the military and police for patrolling, bomb sniffing, and search and rescue. This large dog breed has an average weight ranging from 65—90 pounds. They are typically 22—26 inches tall with a life expectancy of 10—12 years. Caring for a German Shepherd German Shepherds are incredibly active dogs that require intense training and regular exercise to keep them out of trouble physically and mentally. They are best for active families and experienced pet parents. Socialization and consistent training will be essential when a German Shepherd is a puppy. This will help them to grow out of unruly behaviors such as nipping and jumping. German Shepherds have a double coat that sheds a lot. They will also typically go through a molting, which is a period of excessive shedding, one to two times a year. German Shepherd Health Issues While German Shepherds have a long life expectancy for a large breed dog, they are prone to several health problems. A trustworthy breeder will screen both male and female dogs being bred for health conditions such as degenerative myelopathy and hip and elbow dysplasia. German Shepherds commonly also get gastric dilation and volvulus GDV , commonly known as bloat, as well as cancer, allergies, heart disease, and a few other conditions. Pet parents of German Shepherds should be highly educated on the symptoms to look for, as early detection is the key to a good prognosis for any serious condition. Degenerative Myelopathy Degenerative myelopathy is a neurologic disorder that affects the spinal cord, slowly causing paralysis of the back legs. Early signs of degenerative myelopathy include weakness in the hind end and difficulty standing up. Watch your dog carefully for signs of pain and discomfort that come on gradually rather than suddenly. Check their claws at least once a month to watch for signs of uneven wear which would indicate a subtle lameness. There is no treatment for this condition, but physical therapy can help strengthen muscles and protect their ability to use their legs. While there is no cure, you can test for this condition using a DNA-based blood test submitted to the University of Florida or the University of Missouri. Elbow and Hip Dysplasia Elbow dysplasia is a degenerative joint disease that can cause lifelong pain in the front limbs. Hip dysplasia is another degenerative joint disease that affects the hind end. Clinical signs include limping, decreased range of motion, and other signs of pain—especially later in life, as arthritis sets in because of this disease process. The treatment for all degenerative joint diseases includes weight loss, reduced activity, joint protection supplements, anti-inflammatory and pain medications, or surgery. Cancer Cancer can develop in German Shepherds at any age, but usually occurs later in life. Common cancers include hemangiosarcoma and bone, lung, and intestinal cancers. Hemangiosarcoma is a malignant tumor that is most often detected in blood-rich organs such as the spleen and the heart. The signs of hemangiosarcoma are usually related to internal bleeding, with symptoms such as weakness, white or pale gums, trouble breathing, a distended abdomen, and collapse. Other signs are usually nonspecific and indicate overall malaise, including lethargy, panting, anorexia, vomiting, diarrhea, or weight loss. Depending on the extent of the cancer, treatment plans can include chemotherapy, radiation, or surgery. Bloat Gastric Dilation and Volvulus Bloat, or gastric dilation and volvulus GDV is a sudden life-threatening condition when the stomach enlarges with gas bloat and then twists upon itself GDV. This happens commonly in deep-chested, large-breed dogs such as German Shepherds. To limit the risk of GDV, German Shepherds should wait at least 30 minutes to one hour after eating to resume exercising. Another way to help prevent your German Shepherd from developing a life-threatening GDV would be via gastropexy. A gastropexy permanently attaches the stomach to the inside body wall. This fixation of the stomach prevents the stomach from being able to twist upon itself. Allergies Allergies in German Shepherds can be first seen with symptoms such as itchy skin, skin infections , ear infections , or digestive upset such as vomiting, diarrhea, or weight loss. A thorough medical history and physical examination, diagnostic testing of skin and ears, blood work, and fecal tests are warranted if you suspect that your dog has allergies. Allergies in dogs can be treated by avoiding the cause and the allergen and managing the symptoms that exist with diet therapy and medications. Heart Disease Heart disease, specifically DCM dilated cardiomyopathy , valvular disease, and heart murmurs, can be common in German Shepherds. A special diet should also be considered to restrict sodium intake and to increase the amount of certain amino acids to promote heart health. Dogs with significant heart disease should not be pushed to exercise beyond their limits. Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency EPI Exocrine pancreatic insufficiency EPI is a digestive health issue that occurs when the cells of the pancreas do not produce enzymes and hormones normally. The most common symptom is weight loss, despite your pet having a ravenous appetite. Other symptoms of EPI include soft stool or diarrhea; excessive gas; desire to eat feces and other unusual objects; flaky skin; or rough coat. Once the pancreas is damaged to the point that symptoms of EPI develop, you must give your dog pancreatic enzyme supplements and other treatments for the rest of their life. Nevertheless, with proper management, your dog can still live a happy life with this condition. Pannus Pannus, or superficial keratitis, is an immune-mediated painful eye condition that can cause blindness if not managed properly. It occurs more often in dogs that live at high altitudes, those with increased exposure to UV light, and in areas with severe air pollution. Keeping dogs indoors during the sunniest part of the day, providing a doghouse shelter, or trying a specialty pair of doggie sunglasses like Rex Specs may prove very helpful in preventing this issue. Most of these conditions have a genetic component and can be avoid by good breeding and preventive screening practices. They require a high-quality, age-appropriate diet to meet their nutritional needs. These diets are usually labeled puppy, adult, or senior. Offering table food and animal bones should be avoided, as they can cause stomach upset, vomiting, diarrhea, and anorexia, and they also have a much higher fat content than dog food. High-fat foods can also cause pancreatitis. How Much to Feed a German Shepherd In general, puppies should be fed 3—4 times per day and adult dogs should be fed twice a day. How much you feed is determined by the specific food your German Shepherd eats. You can ask your veterinarian, follow the package instructions, or contact the dog food manufacturer, as AAFCO-approved diets have veterinary nutritionists who help determine these requirements. There are some theories that German Shepherds that are fed smaller, more frequent meals have a lower incidence of bloat and stomach problems. How to Feed a German Shepherd Although there is a genetic component, science shows that rapid long bone growth in puppies such as German Shepherds and other large- and giant-breed dogs contributes to development of joint and bone conditions. Rapid bone growth is suspected to be caused by overfeeding and calcium supplementation. German Shepherds that are fed free-choice or overfed are at higher risk of rapid bone growth. Maintaining lean body weight will also help to decrease the rate of bone growth. Calcium supplements and adult dog foods rich in calcium should never be given to German Shepherd puppies under 6 months of age, as they cannot absorb calcium appropriately when they are that young. Conditions caused by rapid long bone growth and excess calcium supplementation can include: Hip and elbow dysplasia Osteochondrosis dissecans of the shoulder, knee, wrists, and ankles. This is improper growth and blood supply in a joint, which requires surgery to prevent osteoarthritis from developing. Hypertrophic osteodystrophy HOD. This is inflammation of the bone under the growth plate; it can cause severe joint swelling, pain, fever, anorexia, lameness, and not wanting to move. This is an inflammation of the long bones and associated blood vessels. Joint swelling is uncommon, but the symptoms are similar to HOD. MSM has all-natural anti-inflammatory properties. Omega-3 fatty acids high-quality fish oil are thought to have anti-inflammatory properties as well when given at appropriate doses. Research shows that reducing inflammation helps to control pain associated with osteoarthritis , which is a common problem in dogs with joint issues. Probiotics Probiotics such as Purina Calming Care can be helpful not just for digestive issues, but with minor behavioral issues as well. Digestive enzymes come in powdered form to assist dogs who have pancreatic issues, such as German Shepherds with exocrine pancreatic insufficiency. Other vitamin and mineral supplements are generally not needed for healthy puppies and adults, as they get all they need from their AAFCO-approved diet daily. The breed is considered to be smart and easy to train. They are known to be gentle family dogs and loyal protectors of those they trust. This loyalty can make German Shepherds seem more standoffish around strangers. It does take them some time to gain the trust of other people and other pets. German Shepherds are a very active and athletic breed that require a ton of exercise for both their physical and mental health. Without exercise they will develop unfavorable behaviors, due to irritation and pent-up energy. Controlled leash walks and supervised free play in safe, fenced-in areas should be started when they are puppies. Keeping a German Shepherd on a leash at all times when in public places is a good rule of thumb, as even the most well-trained dog can be distracted and not follow regular commands, leading to a possible confrontation. These results should be provided to a pet parent by the breeder of the German Shepherd before the dog is purchased. Not all temperament and behavioral issues are evident in a growing puppy, and it is impossible to predict whether a dog will be free of these problems. Find a trustworthy breeder who is committed to breeding the healthiest animals possible. German Shepherd Behavior German Shepherds, like other herding dogs, tend to be on the nippy side. They have very powerful jaws, and unfortunately, they frequently bite. Most aggressive German Shepherds are aggressive because of their owners. The German Shepherd dog is a pack animal. They need you to be the leader of the pack, providing structure and guidance. The key to success is consistency and practice; you will get the behavior you reward. German Shepherds from working lines have an extremely strong drive to work and may be more dog than most people can or want to handle. German Shepherds are very smart companions and exceptional workers. This helps you build the right foundation for your puppy to evolve into a well-adapted and well-mannered adult dog. Conversely, when your dog barks at you to pet them, do not start petting them until they sit down and quietly wait for you to do so. Soon they will learn that they get what they desire without the excessive, unnecessary behavior. German Shepherds thrive on consistency, positive reinforcement, and a reward system, such as a treats or toys to help strengthen the human-animal bond. They become very bonded to all members of the family and will be willing to participate in many family activities. Fun Activities for German Shepherd Herding. References 1. Clinical and pathological effects Degenerative myelopathy is a fatal, chronic, progressive, degenerative disease of the spinal cord, affecting several breeds of dog including the GSD. In time, it leads to complete paralysis in all limbs tetraparesis. To understand the disease process some knowledge of the anatomy of the spinal cord and nervous system is needed. The nervous system is comprised of the central nervous system — the brain and spinal cord — and the peripheral nerves, which connect to the spinal cord throughout its length. It receives messages from sensors throughout the body sensory functions , processes this information, decides what changes need to occur and then sends out messages to glands and muscles to make these changes motor functions. The spinal cord runs along the length of the spine, which protects it. The spine is divided into 5 different regions — cervical neck , thoracic chest , lumbar lower back , sacral pelvic and coccygeal tail. The spinal cord is similarly split into regions and correspondingly labelled. The spinal cord is comprised of two major types of tissue: white and grey matter. The white matter contains the axons — long wire-like fibres - of the sensory and motor neurons that carry nerve impulses either to or from the brain, the grey the cell bodies of the neurons. The axons of the motor neurons, that start in the brain, are often called the upper motor neurons UMNs , and their connections with the cell bodies of the nerves cells that go on to form the peripheral nerves the lower motor neurones LMNs. To increase the speed with which axons can transmit their impulse the electrical message that they carry , they are insulated much like electrical wires in our homes. The insulating layer is called the myelin sheath and it is because of its fat content, that the tissues of the spinal cord that it makes up appear white. In DM there is a slow, progressive degeneration of the white matter of the thoracic section of the spinal cord, with loss of both myelin and axons Shell .Abnormal structures called cytoplasmic inclusions are also observed within the diseased tissue when it is examined under the microscope this can only be done at post mortem Rusbridge no date. The degeneration of the spinal cord tissue appears to be caused by the action of excessive amounts of damaging reactive oxygen species molecules ROS : biochemicals that react with and damage the components of cells, causing oxidative or free radical injury. High numbers of ROS occur with this condition, due to a mutation in the gene which codes for the production of the superoxide dismutase-1 SOD1 enzyme, which is produced by cells to help break down ROS and limit any damage they might cause Awano et al .DM in dogs is comparable to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis ALS a progressive, neurodegenerative disease of humans Awano et al .Prior to the discovery of the SOD1 gene mutation, possible causes of DM were suggested as genetic, nutritional Averill , Williams et al , or immunological Barclay and Haines , Waxman et al .The first signs are typically seen at around 8 to 9 years of age and involve hindlimb ataxia swaying when moving. This may be asymmetrical worse on either the right or left side. The dog may also have difficulty getting up and its hindlimb nails may become scuffed to the point of bleeding. DM has an insidious gradual onset and can easily be misdiagnosed as hip dysplasia or other orthopaedic problems, which are also common in GSDs. Unlike many other of these conditions, DM seems painless Cherubini et al .Owners may notice the hindlegs crossing over as the dog walks. In this stage of the disease, it is mainly the UMNs of the spinal cord that are affected, along with sensory nerves. Spinal reflexes, when tested, often seem to be intact but the dog seems to be unable to sense exactly where the hindlimbs are or place them accurately - hence the scuffing of the nails and ataxic gait. With progression of the disease, loss of motor functions and signs of LMN dysfunction manifest in the hindlimbs. These show as weakness leading to inability to stand and paralysis in the hindlimbs. In time, the muscles of the hindlegs waste away. Most owners elect for euthanasia once paraplegia has occurred; however, if allowed to progress, the disease will ascend up the spinal cord to affect the forelegs leading to tetraplegia loss of use of all four limbs Awano et al .The rate at which the disease progresses is often not uniform rather it is characterised by periods of slow progression followed by rapid changes Cherubini et al .Urinary and faecal incontinence may occur Shell and trauma to nails and the hindlimbs or pressure sores may occur secondary to the paresis loss or impaired movement , paralysis and incontinence. There is currently no effective treatment Cherubini et al , Rusbridge no date although physiotherapy has been shown to prolong the time some dogs can remain mobile Kathmann et al .Return to top 2. Intensity of welfare impact DM is itself not a painful disease Cherubini et al , Shell ; however, affected dogs may be caused distress by being unable to function or behave as normal. Trauma may also occur to nails and the skin of the hind limbs as sensation and loss of function progresses. Once paralysed, these dogs have long-term care needs which many owners find difficult and some dogs will be euthanased because of this. Ultimately, when earlier euthanasia is declined, DM leads to an inability to carry on any kind of normal life and finally to death. Return to top 3. Duration of welfare impact Degenerative myelopathy usually appears in dogs from 8 or 9 years of age Cherubini et al , Rusbridge no date , however, animals as young as 6 months can be affected Cherubini et al .The condition is progressive from the start although the rate of progression of the disease may not be uniform. Most owners of affected dogs elect to have them euthanased within 12 months of the onset of signs, often when they become paraplegic. Deterioration to death can take over 3 years Awano et al .Return to top 4. Number of animals affected Degenerative myelopathy was first identified in GSDs. The commonest cause of progressive hindlimb dysfunction in older, large-breed dogs Wheeler , it was originally thought to only affect GSDs, this is now known not to be the case. Wahl et al consider it a major genetic disease afflicting GSDs. The exact percentage of GSDs to be affected is currently unknown although researchers at Missouri University suggest that a relatively high proportion of individuals from the following breeds: GSD, Boxer, Pembroke corgi, Chesapeake Bay retriever and Rhodesian ridgeback have the predisposing mutated gene and that many of these genetically-affected individuals will go on to manifest the disease. From data on estimates of total dog population in the UK and on the percentage of all micro-chip registered dogs that are German Shepherd Dogs Alsatians Lucy Asher, , personal communication , we estimate that the UK population size of this breed may be around , Return to top 5. Diagnosis A definitive diagnosis of DM can only be made after death by microscopic examination of the spinal cord Cherubini et al .A tentative diagnosis of DM, whilst the dog is alive, can be made by a veterinary surgeon through elimination of all other possible causes of the signs. This will include the need for a full physical and neurological examination examination of the nervous system by means of tests to check out the health of various nerve pathways. It may also include blood tests, spinal x-rays including myelography x-rays after injection of a dye into the spinal canal , analysis of cerebrospinal fluid the fluid that bathes the brain and spinal cord , CT computed tomography scans and MRI magnetic resonance imaging scans, the most useful diagnostic test for imaging the brain and spinal cord. The tentative diagnosis is made if the results of all tests including the MRI scans are normal, though the CSF analysis may reveal a high level of protein Cherubini et al .As DM is most often seen in older dogs it is not uncommon for them to have concurrent disease which often will cause abnormalities on these tests and may complicate the diagnostic process. It is also possible for osteoarthritis of the hips or spine to develop secondary to DM due to uneven weight bearing in the hindlimbs as the disease progresses Cherubini et al .Return to top 6. Genetics Recently a gene connected to the development of DM has been identified. Dogs which are homozygous for the mutated gene SOD1, i. Currently, not all the animals identified with a pair of the abnormal genes have developed the disease. It is not known if they will go on to develop the disease later or if other unknown risk factors are necessary for disease development in these individuals College of Veterinary Medicine, University of Missouri, no date. Animals with one abnormal gene appear to be healthy carriers i. The problem has therefore been categorised as an autosomal recessive disorder with incomplete penetrance i. Return to top 7. How do you know if an animal is a carrier or likely to become affected? DNA testing can now be performed to identify animals at risk of developing the disease and carrier animals. All animals should be tested prior to purchase and breeding. Return to top 8. The researchers who developed this test believe that careful use of it could help decrease the incidence of DM in affected breeds although they feel this occurs slowly, over many generations College of Veterinary Medicine, University of Missouri, no date. Elimination of a recessive gene with incomplete penetrance from a breed is not straightforward if its prevalence is high because removing all carrier animals, that possess a copy of the gene, may significantly affect the number of animals suitable to breed from, and hence the size of the gene pool. Careful breeding of carrier animals to known healthy non-carrier individuals is recommended Bell , with slow replacement of carrier breeding animals with non-carriers over time. If, as suspected, the mutated gene is common in GSDs, halting breeding from all carrier animals may significantly affect the number of animals suitable to breed from, and hence the size of the gene pool. This could lead to excessive inbreeding and the appearance of other unwanted genetic diseases of which there are many. To avoid such a problem, the careful breeding of carrier animals with non-carriers, either from within the breed or from outside the breed, seems necessary. To enable the elimination of the gene whilst minimising the risks of other genetic problems emerging due to greater levels of inbreeding, Bell recommends that, over time, breeders slowly replace carrier breeding animals with non-carriers. Return to top 9. Jul 22, Share We view German Shepherds as intelligent, loyal, and brave dogs who can take on even the toughest of tasks. But like all other dogs, German Shepherds have their fair share of health issues that slowly arise as they start to age. The genes get passed on from litter to litter and is rather painful since it is a malformation in the hip joint. Image Credit: makeitclear, Pixabay 2. Elbow Dysplasia Like hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia affects many larger dog breeds from a line of poorly bred ancestors. Instead of the issue with the hip, the same problem occurs in the elbows, and it can vary from mild to severe symptoms. It usually makes it uncomfortable to walk and, unfortunately, not much can be done once a dog is diagnosed. Gastric Dilatation-Volvulus GDV Also called bloat , GDV is a serious issue that occurs when dogs eat food too quickly and then participate in too much physical activity. The gas builds up in the stomach and the pressure from the bloating makes it difficult for dogs to breathe. Some dogs go into shock or eat grass to try to vomit. This is a life-threatening condition, and your dogs should be taken to the vet immediately if you think they might have it. Try to feed your German Shepherds three small meals a day to prevent the problem. The signs for diabetes include dry mouth, fatigue, excessive eating and urinating, and swollen feet. Image Credit: Flashieeh, Shutterstock 5. Epilepsy German Shepherds are known for having seizure disorders. Even though epilepsy is incurable, there are many ways to help prevent the symptoms. Hemophilia Hemophilia has occurred in German Shepherds due to a long line of inbreeding. Even the smallest of cuts can be serious for a dog. This disease is more common in German Shepherds than many other dog breeds, so be careful when out exercising with them. Cataracts Another health issue that your German Shepherd might get as they age is cataracts. This issue is usually easy to tell when it is happening because you start to see that their eyes look a little more cloudy or they start running into things more often. If they progress, it becomes challenging for dogs to see anything at all. Image Credit: Pauline Loroy, Unsplash 8. Degenerative Disc Disease is common in large animals, but it can even start to manifest when the dogs are still young. A lot of breeders try to avoid this issue. Get your German Shepherd checked for spinal abnormalities from when they are puppies to keep this in check. Panosteitis German Shepherds grow very quickly and sometimes limp a lot as they mature from 5 to 14 months old. It is more common in German Shepherds because they have many stomach issues like Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency. Of course, some breeds have fewer than others, but a lot of them can be prevented with a healthy diet and lifestyle. Over time, visits to the vet can really add up. If you're looking for a good pet insurance plan that won't break the bank, you may want to look at Lemonade. This company offers adjustable plans customized to your pet's needs. However, this breed does have several common health issues that owners should be aware of. The more extreme conditions are a result of inbreeding, so responsible breeders take special care to trace the genealogy before breeding. The average lifespan of a German Shepherd is 10 to 12 years old, but certain conditions might shorten that. Here is a look at some of the most common types of health problems that German Shepherds have and how to recognize them. Diabetes Diabetes is not something that we think of when we think of canine ailments. However, it is not unheard of for German Shepherds to be diagnosed with this health problem. If your dog has one or more of these symptoms, it does not necessarily mean that they have diabetes. However, they should be checked out to ensure that they do not have diabetes or another serious illness. However, it is much more serious than the average bloat that humans experience after eating too much. This is an extremely painful experience for your dog and also very dangerous. The condition can sometimes come on very quickly. Some of the symptoms that your dog may experience with GDV include: Gums are pale or almost white in color Excessive drooling Gagging and retching. If this happens on a weekend or some other time when your regular vet is closed, look to see if there is an emergency animal hospital nearby. With these conditions, dogs will start to go downhill very quickly. In order to give them the best chance at survival, treatment must begin quickly. Perform an X-Ray to get a better look and see if the stomach is twisted. Perform surgery. The only way to fix a twisted stomach is to perform a surgery. Depending on what goes on during the surgery, your dog will need a lot of time to recover from such an invasive operation. While your dog is recovering, it is imperative that he or she gets a lot of rest and refrain from physical activity. Your dog should be monitored closely for the first few days. If they start to vomit or show any signs that their health is deteriorating, you should call the vet immediately. Hip Dysplasia This is a common problem for German Shepherds and other large dog breeds. This is a genetic disorder that usually happens while the German Shepherd puppy is still in the growth stage. The hip socket is more shallow than usual and it causes the hip joint to become loose, which can cause a lot of pain for the dog. Sometimes, hip dysplasia can go unnoticed, but over time, it can cause a dog to develop other problems, such as arthritis and muscular issues. Some of the most common signs that a dog is experiencing hip dysplasia include: Limping for seemingly no reason Hopping when running Popping sounds coming from the joint Slow to stand up Slow to lay down Difficulty getting on and off beds, couches, and other furniture If you notice any of these signs and symptoms, it is a good idea to schedule a vet visit for your dog. There are a few different treatment options available for dogs with hip dysplasia, including surgery. Your vet will examine your dog and determine the best course of treatment. Elbow Dysplasia Elbow Dysplasia is just like hip dysplasia, except for the fact that it affects the elbows and not the hips. The symptoms are also going to be similar. You may notice your dog limping or not wanting to run. Just like with hip dysplasia, surgery is also a treatment option. But sometimes, a vet will try to just manage the pain if the dysplasia is not severe. Cataracts Sometimes it seems like these dogs grow up so fast. In truth, when German Shepherds stop growing is at 18 months. As German Shepherds age, some have been known to develop cataracts. This is the same eye disorder that humans can get as well. It is pretty easy to tell if your older dog has cataracts as you will be able to see a noticeable white film develop on the lens of their eyeball. If left untreated, cataracts can cause your older dog to go completely blind in that eye. Another thing to note is that German Shepherd skin issues are fairly common. This breed is prone to yeast dermatitis, moist dermatitis, and allergy dermatitis. Make sure to have these conditions treated by a vet as soon as you spot on your pup. Having a German Shepherd can be a rewarding experience. They are a playful, protective, and loyal dog breed. As long as you stay vigilant and monitor any unusual symptoms, you should be able to have your playful pooch around for years to come. Check out Vetericyn if there are products that can alleviate the symptoms of any of these conditions. But when trying to find ethical Goldendoodle breeders in South Carolina, your head might be spinning with all the endless options available out there. Due to the extremely high demand for Goldendoodles, the market has also attracted unethical breeders and puppy mills who all claim to specialize in this crossbreed. Health screening is the best way to reduce the risk of the puppies inheriting any genetic conditions , as ethical breeders only mate dogs who have passed all the tests with great results. With that being said, ethical breeders also offer health guarantees that covers any serious genetic conditions that the parent dogs have been tested for. Health guarantees usually cover the first 2 years from adoption. Many Goldendoodle breeders in SC have posted customer testimonials on their websites, but we recommend you also look for reviews on Google, here at Doodle Doods , Facebook, Yelp, or Reddit. For example, since the arrival of the puppy, my two cats have taken up residence in the spare bedroom, sleeping on the bed, where they are well out of reach of the curious canine. One time, I put the puppy on the bed to keep him out of the way while I was vacuuming. I turned around to lift him down again, only to discover that the little devil had peed on the bed! Behavior When it comes to the behavior of male and female dogs, in my experience, males are undoubtedly feistier and more inclined to answer back than females! Although both sexes are just as trainable, the boys are more easily distracted and struggle to focus. Females tend to be calmer and find concentration easier. That being said, the boys did settle down a lot once they had been desexed. Image Source : goldendoodleassociation. Goldendoodles come in a variety of coat colors, including black, brown, caramel, blonde, white, golden, and cream in color. However, especially coveted puppies come in rare colors, including merle and red. Coat Type You can expect to pay more for a Goldendoodle puppy that has a very curly coat. So, a curly-coated Doodle is a better choice for those with pet allergies, as these pups are considered to be one of the very few hypoallergenic dog breeds Size Matters! When it comes to breed sizes, smaller-sized Goldendoodles are usually more expensive than larger ones because the demand for small dogs is greater. F1B Goldendoodles are generally more expensive than F1 generation dogs. Size and temperament are essentially the same, but there are a couple of notable differences between the two that influence the price, including: F1B Goldendoodles have more Poodle DNA. Therefore, these dogs tend to shed less. F1B puppies are considered to be more intelligent and trainable than F1 types. If you enjoyed this guide, please share! Before you begin your search for the perfect puppy, think carefully about what you want from your pet in terms of shedding, hypoallergenic qualities, size, and color. We specialize in breeding Mini Goldendoodles as well as a few other breeds. We also have partnered up with several other high quality breeders that raise mini goldendoodle pups that meet our strict genetic criteria and testing. So we usually have a good selection of very high quality puppies. View Our Available Puppies! Not all mini Goldendoodles are equal, there are a few different versions to choose from each having a little different genetic background based on the pups parents. We will explain all the differences in Mini Goldendoodle puppies and how they are bred below. We raise all versions of the mini goldendoodle breed. F1 Mini Goldendoodle Pups. A F1 puppy is also known as a First Generation puppy. The puppies mother is a Golden Retriever and the pups dad is a Mini Poodle. This version of mini goldendoodle usually has soft wavy or curly puppy fur. They will shed until they lose their puppy fur, after shedding they will shed a lot less, but will shed. This version is partially hypoallergenic and usually requires low maintenance. F1 mini goldendoodles usually need to be groomed every 6 months along with daily brushing to keep their curly hair from matting and getting tangled. The dogs usually grow up having great temperaments similar to golden retrievers. They usually get about inches high at the shoulder and range in weight from pounds. F1b Mini Goldendoodle Pups. An F1b is known as a second-generation mini goldendoodle with the pups mother being already an F1 Goldendoodle and the pups dad being a mini poodle also. So the difference between F1 and F1b is that the mom is not a golden retriever but an actual F1 Goldendoodle. They also have very soft curly hair but with almost no shedding. This F1b version is semi-hypoallergenic and a better choice for anyone who has pet allergies. The F1b also should be brushed on a daily basis but will need to be groomed more frequently then a F1. A 6 to 8 week grooming schedule is recommended to keep their coat in perfect condition. F1b Mini goldendoodles get around 18 to 20 inches tall at the shoulders and range between pounds in weight. F1bb Mini Goldendoodle Pups. An F1bb goldendoodle is also known as a third-generation mini goldendoodle. This mini goldendoodle version has a coat more similar to a poodle than of a golden retriever. This is because the pup is more of a poodle than a retriever. Making it the very best version for anyone with pet allergies. A 6 to 8 week grooming schedule is required to help prevent knots or matting. This version is super intelligent and loving, and usually seems to have more energy than the other versions of Mini goldendoodles. This version is usually smaller in size, weighing around pounds and only getting inches tall at the shoulders. The smaller size makes them a great size for smaller homes and apartments. husky and golden retriever mix puppy - They are amazing breeders, and the puppies are so beautiful and healthy. Chubba Chubba Choo is almost a 1. Jason and Michelle run a successful business with healthy pups that are loved from day one. I highly recommend them!!! His puppies are gorgeous and I promise your heart will tug at you to bring more than one home. The mama dogs were so happy, sweet, pretty and just wanted your attention. The puppies were adorable, healthy and competing for you to play with them. Not one of those dogs ignored you and didn't want to be the center of attention. You could tell they all had great personalities and were very social. Puppychase is Bulldog Heaven! I was very satisfied with the purchase of our puppy. The environment is clean, cool and does not smell. That's hard to accomplish with so many dogs. The Bulldogs are well cared for and the property shows they are a top priority. I can't imagine not being pleased with any dog from Puppychase. The only regrets I have are not being able to take more puppies and I wish I could have seen the male Bulldog in person. I didn't even think to ask. Maybe next time! I have had 3 Bulldogs from PuppyChase. Chester 13 yrs old, Henry 8, and Gus 15 wks. Chester died 2 wks ago. Jason is so knowledgeable and loves his Bulldogs. The health and personalities of his dogs are perfect! The hardest part is picking which one. He uses a flight nanny to ensure the safety of these little guys which allows families from all over U. S A to have a dog from PuppyChase. What a beautiful home and kennel he has in Georgia. Thank you Jason and Michelle! Keep up the great work with breeding English Bulldogs and giving families and experience of a lifetime of owning and loving these beautiful dogs!!! I would highly recommend. Jason and Michelle are dedicated to ensuring their pups and litters are taken care of! Their pups have the best disposition!! Exceptional customer service and will go above and beyond to accommodate your needs. New to the breed? Will definitely make our way back to PuppyChaseKennels. I am familiar with common and uncommon health problems they may face so when my boyfriend and I decided we were ready to adopt our own english puppy finding a reputable breeder that prioritizes health was most important to us. Erica and Mitch of Bruiser Bulldogs are just that. They are experienced, ethical and quality breeders. I was referred to them by my friend that I trust after I saw their gorgeous healthy puppy. Our Puppy Primrose is the light of our lives! Bruisers was there to assist us every step of the way. We would highly recommend Bruisers Bulldogs to anyone looking for their own happy, healthy pup! Leah H. We were lucky to have come across Bruiser Bulldogs and even more so the fact that they were near our family and hometown made it even better. We have had Clementine Callie for four months now, and she is a wonderful dog. Her personality is amazing, and I think part of it is breeding and the other part is Erika and her family lovingly raising the puppies in their home with plenty of attention and snuggles. I also was impressed that, rather than send the puppies out right at 8 weeks, Erika kept ours for a few extra weeks because she was tiny and not read to leave her mom yet. It's that care that differentiates Bruisers from other breeders. Emily R. Erica was easy to work with thru the entire process from application to adopting and now beyond as we host our new family member, Chief. Her on-call support and willingness to provide open, honest advice to all of our questions and concerns continues to be appreciated. We would highly recommend Bruiser Bulldogs to anyone looking for an English Bulldog to join their family. Elizabeth W. Lady L. They are experienced, responsive and knowledgeable about all things bulldog related. They went above and beyond for us and are truly dedicated to all of their pups! We love our little girl so much and would recommend Bruiser to anyone looking for a healthy beautiful bully. Jonathan E. Erica and Mitch are trustworthy, excellent communicators, fair, passionate, and produce the best bulldogs. We were at the top of the waiting list for months and Erica reached out every litter to see if we were finally ready for a bulldog. When we were, she was very easy to work with. Her knowledge on bulldogs is outstanding. We had many questions on the process and she always knew what was best for the puppy. We've had Penny formerly Blair for two months and she is very healthy, energetic, playful, and sweet. She is great with other people and dogs. We are so happy with our pup. When we are ready for bulldog 2, we will only consider Bruiser Bulldogs. Mitch C. Bowser was born April and is an integral part of our family. When we were first exploring English Bulldog breeders our biggest concern was the overall health of the dogs. We decided to work with Erica at Bruiser Bulldogs because we liked their focus on improving the breeds breathing abilities and the fact that the puppies are raised within her family environment before coming home with their new owners. Bowser also breaths clearly and our vet was impressed with his overall health from the moment we brought him home. All that said we know English Bulldogs have a predisposition to many health issues and that his current health can not predict the future. With that In mind its important to start with a breeder that open to answer any of your questions as Erica has ours, and that strongly believes in improving the breeds overall health profile. Adam B. My sister ended up finding Bruiser Bulldogs and we knew right away that they were the breeder for us. In September we ended up driving 9 hours to pick up two Bruiser bulldog puppies- one for my husband and I and one for my mom. Jackson and Penelope have been nothing but a joy. They are both very athletic and healthy. They are also HUGE snugglers and always want to be with you. It is an absolute pleasure having these two bullies in our lives! Erica is very knowledgeable about the breed. She is very hands on throughout the process and is just overall a kind and honest person to work with. With all that being said I cannot recommend Bruiser Bulldogs enough! Collyn C. One of the reasons we chose Bruiser Bulldogs was due to the claims about breeding for health. During our first visit at our vet's office, he told us that our pup was one of the healthiest English bulldogs he had ever seen. He is healthy, happy and social. Would recommend to anyone. Christina S. We seen our dog on their website and sent them an Email. Mitch called us and personally walked us through the process and made sure we had the right dog for our family. We couldn't be happier when we picked up our dog Ramsey, Erica made sure we had everything we needed and then some. They are truly amazing people who breed truly amazing dogs! Jim T. Bruce has a lot of energy because well, German Shepherds are so smart, but after a good game of fetch or tug of war with the rope, he will settle down with you on the couch for the evening. He has the capability to feed off of your mood and energy. He loves everyone he meets, including kids and other four-legged canine friends, large or small. He is in a foster home with several dogs and young kids. He is bombproof with everything!! Except cats When he encounters those pesky cats on his walks, he would like to chase them off, so keep a good grip on his harness and leash. Homes with cats or small animals not including dogs would not be a good idea. Bruce would do best with a home with a yard and a 6' fence or lots of room to play and stretch his legs. He is a very social dog that goes to brunch on patios with his foster mom. He loves getting pets from any new person he meets. Bruce has the absolute best temperament and would make an amazing companion to any family. This sweet goofball can't wait to meet his forever family. Could it be you? My name is Ralf aka Ralfy aka Ralfy Palfy. My fosters gave me the last nickname because they say I will make someone a great Pal. You see, I was found on the side of the road barely alive after being hit by a car. I couldn't walk very well because my pelvis was broken in three places. But after visiting this place called the veterinarian, I started feeling much better. Unfortunately before my accident I had never met kind humans and still to this day, I'm very easily startled and scared of new people. It's going to take someone very special and patient to earn my trust. But once you earn it, I'm the sweetest and most gentle dog ever. I love love love chest rubs and ear scratches. But my number one love of all time is treats!!! I love all flavors so if you decide to take me home, don't be shy when shopping for me! I enjoy sunbathing and relaxing in my kennel. It's my safe place when I feel overwhelmed. I promise to love you if you promise to take the time to get to know me. I will do best in a quiet house with maybe 1 or 2 adults and an older mature doggy friend. I don't care much for traveling and prefer to be a homebody. I do love to play with doggy friends and don't mind cats either. I'm currently working on becoming more confident in public spaces. What do you say? Can you give me a shot? Ralf is kennel trained and potty trained. He is a local adoption only. His current foster is a trainer who is willing to offer two free sessions along with his adoption to set you both up for success and better help you understand what he will need and how you can help provide that for him. He is a Shepherd mix that weighs roughly 50lbs.
