But, generally speaking, there is very little difference between the amount of shedding that you can expect from a low-shedding Labradoodle or goldendoodle. One of the difficulties with Labradoodles is that it can be difficult to tell what their coats will be like until they are at least 12 weeks old. So it is not always easy to determine whether they will have a curly or a straight coat, and whether they will have a low-shedding or high-shedding coat. To get the best idea, focus on the fur around the face and muzzle, which will show the characteristics of the coat first. However, to be sure they have this low-shedding coat, you do need to wait until they are a bit older to see exactly how their coat grows out. It can be a good idea to speak to a breeder about a Labradoodle that is bred from two Labradoodles with a low-shedding coat for a greater chance of getting a pup with the same coat. The probability is greater here than if you look for a dog that comes first generation from a poodle and a Labrador. As you may be well aware, Labradors are arguably the best service dogs out there, thanks to their high intelligence and intense loyalty. The issue with Labs, however, is that they are incredibly heavy shedders. As such, this beautiful service dog is of no use to people with pet allergies. The Poodle sheds once every 3—4 weeks, as opposed to most breeds that shed almost every other day. The result was an intelligent, sociable, and more allergy-friendly hybrid. Nonetheless, as mentioned, allergy-friendliness levels vary significantly among Labradoodles depending on the genes they inherit. This is because even pups from the same litter can differ considerably in the type of coat they sport, with some inheriting that of the Labrador and others of the Poodle. Fortunately, you can tell the more allergy-friendly ones based on their generation. In fact, Labradoodles can be classified according to generations. These include: F1 Labradoodle 1st Generation This is a first-generation Labradoodle, and it is the result of crossing a Labrador with a Poodle. As such, F1 Labradoodle pups can sport two different coats, depending on which parent they take after the most. The first is a fleece coat with a soft feel, while the other is a flat coat with a wiry feel. As such, both coats have a different rate of shedding. What we've discovered is that a Labrador with a good pedigree, whether British or American, is typically bred from a line that contains many field trial champions. A British Labrador will have more calmness and hunting drive bred into it, while an American Labrador will be bred to be "amped" and to Katie withstand high pressure. This is due in large part to the way field trials are conducted in the UK versus in the US. In the US, AKC field trials involve dogs mechanically obeying commands - some of which are counter-intuitive to the dog - and retrieving dummies or dead game. In the UK, field trials involve live Willow Flushing a Rooster game and real-life hunting and shooting scenarios. Dogs must mark and then retrieve dead and wounded game. Finding and retrieving game is of utmost importance. In addition, dogs are not allowed to even whimper when on the line or they'll be disqualified. Therefore, British Labradors are bred for strong hunting and scenting abilities as well as a calm temperament. Above Buster all, the British Labrador's scenting ability is extraordinary and far superior to other breeds. They are exceptional upland game bird dogs and strong swimmers, making them excellent waterfowl dogs as well. Choosing A British Labrador Puppy Once you've chosen a British Labrador breeder you feel confident in, the next step will be to choose your puppy. Here are some things to consider when choosing a puppy: Determine the temperament that suits you best. While it's hard to determine what a puppy's temperament will be like to an exact degree, you can make some generalizations that will help you in making a good choice. Think about your family and the environment in which the dog will be raised. A quiet, shy dog may be better suited to an older couple whose kids are grown and moved out. An energetic, bold puppy may be better suited to a boisterous family with young kids. An avid hunter may want a more curious, independent puppy. Trying to match a puppy's temperament with your family and your home environment should be a top priority. The breeder should be able to help you, as he has been in close contact with the puppies for many weeks and has watched their indiviual personalities develop. What is the main purpose of the dog? Will your puppy be mostly a family dog? Will he be used for hunting? Do you want to train him to be a therapy dog? Determining now what you'd like to accomplish with the dog in the future will help you in choosing a dog with the right attributes. Male vs. In many breeds, male dogs tend to be more dominant while females dogs tend to be more submissive. This is not the case with British Labradors! The males of this breed just don't seem to have the dominant, aggressive tendencies that males of other breeds display. As a hunter, I personally favored American female dogs for many years - they were easier to train for the hunting field, less stubborn, and more responsive. That all changed with our introduction to the British Labrador. The British males are as sweet and friendly as the females and show few of the aggressive tendencies typical of American male Labs. Play with the puppies. Try to visit the puppies once or twice prior to choosing your pup. Your breeder should let you see the puppies as much as possible after they are four weeks old, although you may be asked to keep handling to a minimum at the early stages. Observe the puppies both individually and as a group. Start by observing the puppies as a group. Throw a ball and see who goes after it, and who brings it back to you. Walk around and see which puppies follow you. Observe how the puppies interact with each other - which ones seem dominant and which ones seem more submissive. When you've narrowed your selection , spend some one-on-one time with each pup you're considering. Sit on the ground with the puppy and get his attention by calling him, snapping your fingers, patting the ground, etc. Does he come to you quickly? If so, maybe he's already formed a strong bond with people. Does he stop to explore new sights and sounds on the way? He may have a curious or independent streak. Overall, the puppy should be responsive and eager to investigate and play with his new friend. If a number of the puppies seem afraid of you, or bark or growl at you, find another breeder. Take your time. Your puppy will become a member of your family and will be with you for many years. Spend as much time as is necessary to make your decision. Don't let a breeder rush you to make a choice or pressure you to choose a particular puppy. The second begins when you bring him home. He will come in the house full speed, only to realize that he cannot stop on the tile and go crashing into the wall or the island in the kitchen. That is why I think that a certain maturity level will determine the right time for Labrador puppies to start climbing stairs. How to teach a Lab puppy to climb the stairs I think the best approach in this situation is to teach your puppy to behave on the leash. Then, when you approach the stairs make him sit down at the bottom of the stairs. You can actually get your puppy accustomed to sitting at the top and bottom of any stairs. If you condition him, you pup will wait for your to either command him to proceed or wait for you to start to up or down them before proceeding. Insist that your puppy sit at the top and bottom of stairs and then wait for your command. The porch steps are a great place to practice because there is less chance your pup will hurt himself. The idea is to get your puppy to climb or descend the stairs at a controlled pace. Ideally, he will stay at heel while going up or down the stairs. To get your puppy to sit at the top or bottom of any stairs, put him on a leash and get a handful of treats. Walk your puppy to the edge of the stairs and command SIT. As soon as his bottom hits the floor, give him a treat or fire off the clicker. Repeat this several times. If your retriever looks at you inquisitively, just wait. He will likely stare at you for a moment and then, eventually sit down. As soon as he sits down, you give him the treat. Now, repeat this silent approach several times. Keep in mind, you might have to repeat this process at the top of the stairs just to make sure your pup understands that the expectation is the same at the top and the bottom. This goes for Golden Retrievers, Labradors and other big breed pups. While slowly going up and down stairs is not a problem for most Labs at 4 months old remember they need to be big enough and mature enough , you should not let them jump down from large heights. Jumping out the truck, for example, will not cause hip dysplasia but can still cause joint problems for your puppy. This can lead to joint pain later on in life and possible surgeries to fix the damage. The same can be said for jumping off a tall porch or launching himself from the last three stairs. Most dog sports like agility courses or dock jumping actually require dogs to be one-year-old before they let them participate. Stronger joints will endure the stress of constant jumping better than developing, immature ones. What about the scientific research that supports the misconception? There are some studies that are used to support the idea that climbing stairs too soon leads to hip dysplasia. However, there is an important difference between causes HP and just being correlated with it. These studies all show a correlation, but not causation.
