The Lion Cut Let's start with one of the most popular poodle haircuts of all, the lion cut. Sometimes referred to as the "puppy cut," this hairstyle takes advantage of your poodle's long fur to give them a mane-like appearance. The dog's limbs are left hairless, except for a pompom around the tail, front and rear paws. A perfect look for poodles who want to show off their luxurious locks! This hairstyle will last a while since the short hairs on your poodle's face and body will help prevent matting. You should still brush your pup regularly to keep his coat clean and healthy! The Puppy Cut Another popular haircut for poodles and other small dogs like the Yorkshire Terriers is the "puppy cut. While the fur looks a little longer around the face, the haircut mimics a human infant rather than a furry animal. With this cut, your pup will feel extra comfortable as he goes about his day! While many owners opt for this style as it doesn't require as much maintenance as other cuts, it's easy to get tired of the same look over time. Your poodle will still need regular brushing to remove tangles and maintain his healthy coat. Teddy Bear Cut Do you love the look of a teddy bear? The teddy bear cut is another popular choice for poodle haircuts. It's an adorable style that looks kind of like your pup has a bushy mane! This technique leverages the poodle's tiny round eyes and creates the illusion of a furry face. The hair should be cut uniformly at mid-length with a rounded shape to the top of the head. It's important not to cut the body fur too short, as we need the poodle's curls to be seen clearly for this cut. The fur around your pup's paws is left untouched, so it appears thick and full, giving your poodle the appearance of having tiny bear paws! These cuts are extremely popular with older dogs who won't have to worry about frequent brushing or bathing. Summer Cut Although you want your poodle to look cute, you also want them to be comfortable! In the summer, it's hot and humid, and your pup will thank you for cutting his hair shorter. The summer cut is an excellent choice for those sweltering days. The tail can also be left long or cut short to complement your pup's look. The face and paws are the only parts of the body shaved, so you get a little bit of extra grooming time! This cut requires regular brushing to keep your poodle's coat clean and tangle-free. English Saddle Cut The English saddle cut is a popular choice for poodles with longer coats. This haircut is similar to the dutch cut, but it explicitly leaves more hair on the top of your poodle's head. The face and legs are also shaved, but a little more fur is left on the body to create an overall rounded look for this cut. This cut is great-looking but will require regular brushing and bathing to prevent mats from forming. Short Cut This is a prevalent choice for poodles with shorter hair, as it is low-maintenance and easy to groom. In this style, all of the hair on your dog's body is trimmed short, except for the ears. The fur around his face and paws is also shaved short, giving your pup a clean, polished look. This style is perfect for owners who want their dogs to look neat and tidy with minimal effort! Although this style doesn't require as much grooming as other styles, it's still necessary to brush your poodle regularly as the fur grows back. Things To Know Before Grooming Your Poodle Now that you know a little bit about the different types of poodle haircuts, there are a few things to keep in mind before you get started. All poodles require regular brushing Regardless of the style of haircut you choose. Brushing helps to remove excess hair and keep your poodle's coat healthy. It also helps to stimulate blood flow to the skin, which is important for natural oil production. Be sure to give your pup a good bath before grooming him, It would be best to wash your dog too often, but bathing him before grooming will help remove loose fur and leave your poodle's coat soft and shiny. A lot of groomers also recommend giving your pup a good brush after bathing to remove any excess hair, as it can clog drains or just be tough to clean up. Grooming should be a fun experience for your dog Please don't force your poodle to do anything they don't want to! Teaching them that grooming is a positive, relaxing experience will help the process go by more quickly and smoothly. Start grooming early If your dog is still a puppy, it might be a good idea to introduce him to the grooming process early on. This will help him get used to the sights, sounds, and smells of a groomer's salon, and he'll be more likely to cooperate when it's time for his actual haircut. We recommend sending your dog to a professional groomer for his haircut. This will ensure that your pup gets the best possible cut and that you don't accidentally cut him too short or leave any bald patches. Most groomers offer various services, so be sure to ask what they include in their price. Generally, a groomer will begin by bathing your dog and then trimming his nails, cleaning his ears, and starting to cut the hair according to your specifications. The process will continue with a blow-dry, and then your pup will be ready for his final trim. Poodles are known to have a lot of hair, so it can take a long time to groom them completely. You should expect the process to take up to two hours or more. You should consider many factors when choosing a groomer, including experience, pricing, and location. Though they may get into trouble at times, Pugs tend to be good-natured dogs. Pugs are usually not aggressive dogs. However, if your Pug is not properly socialized and trained, they can easily develop aggressive tendencies such as nipping, barking or growling due to their headstrong and stubborn temperaments. According to Hills Pet , Pugs are cheerful, laid back dogs and we tend agree with them. But despite their playful attitude, they can be serious dogs. My pug sun bathes outside for hours every day. Pug owner As easy-going as these dogs are, expect them to lounge around and nap for many hours throughout the day. In fact, Pugs are infamously known for their mischievous side. In addition, Pugs can be a little headstrong at times with the occasional stubborn streak. If you have already have a dog, cat or other animal, we have good news for you! Pugs get along great with other dogs. These dogs are all about devotion to the pack. However, there is a caveat. Without proper socialization, Pugs may be aggressive towards the unfamiliar. My pug hates other dogs but tolerates and protects her little Siberian Husky sister only. This may mean meeting on neutral grounds first, such as a dog park or even in the front yard. One thing to keep in mind is that you should never introduce the puppy to your dog while holding the pup in your arms. This can make them feel vulnerable. Instead, let them do their thing, such as sniffing, licking or whatever they decide to do to get to know each other. Can Pugs be Aggressive Towards Humans? Like with other animals, Pugs are not usually aggressive towards other people, including seniors and kids. However, some Pugs do show aggression towards kids by nipping their feet, lunging towards them or just barking at them. Even so, these behaviors are rarely malicious. But it really depends on how they were raised and socialized as a puppy. Planes flying overhead. Neighbors taking out the trash. As a result, there can be a lot of scary things in this world, at least to them. Although this may sound silly, it happens more often than you think. Ever hear of the small dog syndrome? Everyone else is a stranger and potentially a threat. Otis our pug got used to the baby and is now super protective. The possessive nature is not unique to Pugs. Many dogs of all kinds can develop this type of behavior. However, there are many other potential reasons why your dog may be acting out. Pugs are no exception. These signs can be snapping, growling or outright biting. Whether from a medical condition or not, pain can also elicit this type of unnatural behavior from your Pug. Many times the pain comes from injuries while playing too hard, as Pugs tend to do. Other times, pain or discomfort can come from tumors, arthritis, fractures or whatever internal injuries. Never give your Pug medication without the consent of your vet. A mistake most owners make is trying to take matters into their own hands. Please, leave it to the professionals. Not only can it happen with other dogs, but also with humans. Dogs that suffer from this internal desire to become the alpha of the pack can show aggression in the form of growling, biting, snapping and lunging. Of course, not all Pugs even want to be the alpha of the pack. In my 11 years of raising my pug with my other dogs, I have never had this problem with my pug. For example, this Pug owner describes her dominant Pug, saying: My pug thinks she is the alpha. She pulls pillows off the couch and uses them as her toys. She constantly stands at my top of the couch and looks out the window and barks. An owner told me that her female dog will hump her leg and toys all the time. This is a clear sign of a dog establishing dominance over the owner. The best way to combat this is for you to establish yourself as the clear-cut leader of the pack. There should be no struggle for the alpha spot. Food Aggression in Pugs Food aggression can vary quite a bit among individual dogs within a breed. And according to the AKC, Pugs are one of the 10 dog breeds that love to eat the most. But food aggression has three tiers to it: The dog can just growl, which is the first tier. The next level would be the dog snapping at a person or animal when they get too close. Of course, the final tier is biting. Fortunately, there are ways to deal with this. Still, she was protective of the snacks. Socializing the Pug One of, if not, the most important things you can do is to socialize your Pug. The best window of learning for a puppy starts around week 3 and closes sometime between week 16 and .Fortunately, there are many options for socializing a dog. The best and my recommended option is the dog park. If you have time, take your Pug to the dog park after work where there will be plenty of kids, adults and dogs. Dog parks are really the perfect place to socialize a dog. The Pug will be able to interact with all different breeds of dogs and the humans that take care of them! Having an obedient Pug means that you may be able to control aggressive behaviors better. Because Pugs are food-driven dogs, it can help a lot with obedience training since you already know what their main motivator is. However, I want to warn that Pugs are prone to obesity, especially with their lazy and relaxed temperaments. Do you own an aggressive Pug? What have you done that works? Let us know in the comments section below! Posts you may like:. Playing] October 27, by Susan Do you have a Pug puppy who is aggressive? You may be wondering why your puppy is so aggressive or if they are playing. Aggressive behaviors in puppies can be confusing, but there are ways to tell the difference. This article will teach you how to tell if your dog is playing or showing signs of aggression and what to do about it. If your Pug puppy is showing signs of aggression, it may have to do with the following: They have learned the aggressive behavior helps them get what they want. Have been punished incorrectly or too harshly. That said, every puppy or dog can be pushed into aggressive behavior depending on their circumstances, environment, upbringing, etc. Some people, especially first-time dog owners have a hard time differentiating play vs aggression. Playing Vs. Aggression Puppies in general are very active and hyper. They are constantly on the move and you can see them exploring their environment. Their goal is to learn more about everything around them, mostly through play. Puppies love to wrestle with each other or chase toys for fun because they enjoy moving fast while playing. They may even growl or nip at you when you try taking their toys away. Playful behavior in Pug puppies is different from aggressive behavior. Learned Behavior Pugs may learn to act aggressively by watching you act aggressively towards them or others, or you may discipline them with aggressive actions shouting, growling, pushing. A Pug owner needs to maintain an even temper and avoid using any sort of forceful or violent punishment so you do not teach your pup to act aggressively. Think of it as having a child. Punished too Harshly Punishing a puppy too harshly can cause aggression. This article will show you how to discipline your Pug puppy using positive reinforcement , which works best. You can avoid this by finding a way to spend more time with your pup. Pugs love being around their humans and too much neglect can cause behavioral problems. A puppy raised in a household with other animals is more likely to be well-adjusted than one who lives in an apartment or house where he or she is the only pet. A puppy that grows up with children that are not taught how to handle, play, or interact with a puppy can cause aggression. It will cause the puppy to become aggressive as a way to defend itself from the children. Lack of Socialization We hear about the importance of socializing our children with others their age. Doing so teaches them how to interact, behave, and play with others. Puppies, like our human children, need to be exposed to other canines so they can learn appropriate behavior. Puppies learn about aggression and playfulness by playing with other dogs. They will learn how they should behave in these situations by observing you as you react during these situations. Hormonal Changes Puppies experience a dramatic change in hormone levels at the time of puberty. Such as you see with teenagers in your home, these changes can lead to physical and behavioral problems. The hormonal change can cause aggression in both dogs and humans at this time. During adolescence, many dogs may bark more often, or show sudden signs of aggression. Aggressive Pug Puppy Warning Signs Now that you know what can cause aggression in any breed, how do you spot the signs early? After all, the sooner you spot the signs, the easier it will stop the behavior before it escalates. Early signs of aggression in puppies include being possessive over food and toys. Is your Pup protective over their food bowl? Does he or she growl, snarl, or snap at you when you walk by as they eat? Do they get mad or try to bite you when you reach for their bowl or pet them as they eat? Now that you know the signs, you may be asking how to deal with the aggressive behavior? Depending on the severity of the problem, you may want to consult with a professional dog trainer. Reinforcement training works best for aggressive dogs, especially, if you have rescued your dog from a bad living situation. Many online books and dog training courses will show you how to properly use treats to reward good behavior. Final Word Pugs are not known for being aggressive, but you should still be able to identify the difference between playful and aggressive behavior. After all, any dog regardless of breed can develop signs of aggression. Like children, need stability and discipline in their life. The best way of teaching your Pug puppy how to behave is through positive reinforcement training methods that avoid punishment. This will ensure you teach them what you want without making it worse by adding on extra aggression problems. You probably have an aggressive pug. Again, it completely depends on the circumstance. But this is possible from any dog, not just pugs. If they were brought up in a loving, safe environment and frequently socialized with other dogs, other kinds of pets, and humans of all ages, they are more likely to be a laid-back, well-mannered adult. If they never spent time around humans or other dogs, they might grow up to be suspicious, fearful, or — you guessed it — aggressive with other animals and people. Your pug is no different. Food aggression and resource guarding are relatively common among our canine friends. If your pug had to closely guard their food in the past, perhaps in a kennel or shelter situation, they may be wary of other pets or human family members trying to steal their food now. Fear Response Just like humans, a dog that was exposed to trauma in the past can experience behavior problems because of it, even years later. If your dog was abused in the past, it could lead to aggression in the present. This is especially common in rescue dogs who have come from traumatic backgrounds. Socialization Socializing your pup properly — ideally from puppyhood — is the best way to prevent aggressive behavior. Raise your dog in a comfortable, calm, safe environment. Interact with them frequently, touching and handling them on a daily basis. If you can, expose your dog to all sorts of people — men and women, young children and older folks — as well as other animals if you can do so safely. Just make sure to keep your dog on-leash and watch them closely. Obedience Training Of course, you might adopt a pug well after the puppyhood stage. It just takes proper training. Obedience training involves training your dog to respond to basic commands like sit, stay, come, and heel. There is also leash training and other areas of obedience training that may be helpful. One key technique in obedience training is positive reinforcement, in which you reward good behaviors in order to discourage bad ones. This might involve giving your pug a treat when they behave well around other dogs or children, for example. Dogs with severe cases of PTSD, or those who display food aggression to the point of biting other animals or humans, will need the help of a professional animal behaviorist or expert dog trainer. Anything from an infection to a physical injury could be causing pain and discomfort, resulting in aggression. So, Are Pugs Aggressive? Are pugs aggressive? No, not any more than other dog breed. It has much more to do with the individual dog than it does with the breed. Proper socialization — ideally from a young age — and obedience training are the primary ways to deal with an aggressive pug. You can go at it alone or seek the help of a professional dog trainer. They are popular for their loyal and affectionate disposition, and human-like facial expressions. But unfortunately, the demand for dogs with increasingly flat faces has created enormous problems with brachycephalic diseases in the Pug breed. The steep cost of treating these problems often leads to Pugs being surrendered at dog shelters. Once there, they may have difficulty being rehomed. Partly due to needing ongoing medical care, and partly due to adopter anxiety about the risk of aggression in dogs with unknown histories. So what are the odds of a Pug behaving aggressively? What Makes Pugs Aggressive? All dogs are capable of acting aggressively. Their wild ancestors would have relied on it in order to survive. There are a few risk factors which are known to make some dogs more likely to behave aggressively than others. Several studies have reported that male dogs across many breeds are more likely to use aggression than female dogs. This is likely to be because male dogs are programmed to roam more widely in search of mates, and thus encounter more threats. Older dogs are also more likely to reach aggressively than younger dogs. This can be a result of pain due to health problems linked to old age. Or due to panic and confusion caused by cognitive degeneration dementia. Lack of general obedience training, and using punishment for aggressive behavior also increases the likelihood of dogs behaving aggressively. But more than anything, aggression in dogs is a learned response to threatening experiences in their past. Which means Pugs are more likely to react aggressively towards very specific triggers, rather than towards everything generally. Aggression between Pugs who live together is uncommon, but it has been documented. Lots of dogs become reactive towards other dogs if they have an unpleasant experience which creates a fear response in them next time. This kind of reactivity is sometimes very particular, and directed only at other dogs of the same breed, shape or color. Specificity means aggression towards other dogs is not a good predictor of aggression towards people. Or vice versa. Pugs can also form aggressive relationships with other dogs they live with. The most common type of aggression between cohabiting dogs is possessive aggression resource guarding. When this happens, it is usually the newest member of the household, or the younger dog of a pair who acts aggressively towards the other. Are Pugs Aggressive To Strangers? All dogs are more likely to behave aggressively towards strangers than people they already know. Smaller dogs, including Pugs, are also more likely to display stranger-directed aggressiveness than larger breeds. But good socialisation before 12 weeks old reduces the probability of Pugs being aggressive towards strangers. Puppy classes are a good way to achieve this, and there is an observable decrease in aggression towards strangers among dogs who attend them. Socialisation works by creating a positive association with meeting new people for your dog. Dogs who are confident that meeting a new person is going to be a happy and rewarding experience are less likely to react with fearful aggression. Pugs are famous for being sweet and affectionate to their human families. They can learn to react aggressively if their family use physical punishments on them though. Surprisingly, one study found that dogs generally, not just Pugs who attended obedience classes were also more likely to be aggressive towards their family. Additionally, rescue dogs are also more likely to be aggressive towards their families. This could be due to their new family unwittingly triggering fear responses which were created before they came home. An experienced behaviorist can help pinpoint the reasons for family-directed aggression, and plan a strategy for overcoming it. Are Pugs Safe With Children? No matter how peaceful, trustworthy or reliable you think either one might be. Puppy biting A quick note on Pug puppy biting. Many puppies go through a relentless biting stage. During this period, it can often feel like the biting is so bad, that there must be something wrong with your puppy. Maybe they have a built in character flaw which is going to make them aggressive for their whole life? Are Pugs Aggressive? So there you have it. Pugs are not typically considered an aggressive breed, but they are capable of aggression. Usually they will only react aggressively to specific triggers, and behaving aggressively in one situation is not a reliable predictor of aggression in other situations. They have a big round head with large sparkling eyes and are considered an ideal house dog. The Pug has always been popular among the aristocrats over the centuries. Pug Behavior Pugs tend to be loving, charming, and mild with an even temper. Because of these attributes, Pugs are perfect contenders for house and family dogs. They are easy-going with children, mildly sensitive, and relatively friendly to strangers. Sometimes they can be stubborn and slightly tricky to train. Are Pugs Aggressive? A Pug is a perfect family dog due to its personality and temperament. Generally, Pugs are not aggressive. But when not socialized effectively when young, they can be stubborn. Coming across an aggressive Pug is an infrequent occurrence since they take to food-based training easily and socialize fast, especially at a young age. What are the Causes of Aggression in Pugs? Several factors can contribute to aggressive behavior in Pugs, including lack of attention, being left alone for long periods, and neglect from its caregivers. Aggressive Pugs exhibit this trait through being bossy, barking, dominance, rushing, and pecking. Such aggression can be heredity, where parents pass these attributes to their litter. Other aggression causes include ill-treatment, and shouting, more so from handlers. Regardless, you can correct this concern through adequate training and socialization of the Pug when young. Having an aggressive Pug can be problematic, and as the owner, you need to curb this behavior to ensure the dog is friendly, gentle, and family-oriented. Training is necessary when your Pug is young since, at this time, pups are relatively easier to train as compared to older dogs. The training window is typically best at 3 to 16 weeks, but ideally before the 20th week. We recommend enrolling in a puppy training course, such as Pupford Academy , so you can be guided by experts. Training mostly involves behavioral training and socialization with the involvement of both humans and other dogs. These activities teach guide your Pug on how to perceive the world around them and how to respond to it. Socialization can be as simple as taking your Pug out for a walk, generally in a place with both dogs and humans such as a park. Behavioral training involves obedience training, where you teach your Pug basic commands. Training is the best way to prevent aggression. Pug puppies, just like most puppies, tend to be hyperactive. So, what contributes to this hyperactive Pug behavior? Among the leading factors include curiosity, separation anxiety, excitement and playfulness. Hyperactive pugs are likely to demolish things, bark for attention, bite and nip, chase things, and get little sleep. Hyperactive Pugs can be stressful for the owner because they demand attention all the time. But as your Pug puppy comes of age, it calms down. This change usually happens at around one and a half to two years. Occasionally, they will have these sudden bursts just like other dog breeds. These zoomies will only manifest when you expose your Pug to specific triggers such as bath time, which may call for restraining. Are Pugs Emotional? Pugs are emotional creatures. They have an affectionate side and a serious side. This trait is due to the secretion of a hormone called oxytocin, also present in humans, that makes them feel caring and loving to others. These basic emotions will include, joy, love, fear, disgust, and anger. Even so, they can also get depressed and anxious, especially when you leave them on their own for relatively long periods. Do Pugs Have Behavioral Problems? Though most Pugs are typically loyal, obedient, and disciplined, some may have behavioral problems depending on their personality. Common behavioral issues include barking, growling, nipping, whining, dominance, separation anxiety, and stubbornness. These issues differ with different Pugs, and not all Pug owners will encounter them. Final verdict Pugs are great family dogs, and with proper training can be emotional supporters. They are loving, loyal, emotional, and playful, great with children and easy to groom. Because of these attributes, Pugs are an ideal choice for many people. August 15, Fact Checked When looking to add a dog to your family, one of the first factors you must take into consideration is which breed best fits your lifestyle, personality, and interests. Each dog breed has breed specific characteristics that govern their overall temperament, needs, and potential health issues. With this in mind, each dog has their own unique personality and temperament within the overall breed and finding the right fit for you will leave you with a dog that brings you joy and lightens your life If you are considering a Pug as the right breed for you, you may be asking yourself, are Pugs aggressive? Pug aggression can arise and may be brought on by a variety of external variables, and knowing the inner workings of potential Pug aggression will help you make an educated choice about whether or not a Pug is the right furry friend for you. Pug Temperament When analyzing whether or not Pugs can be aggressive, it is important to establish a baseline of typical Pug traits and characteristics. Pugs are known for being extremely loyal and loving to their owners, and possess a silly streak that has earned them a reputation for being the clowns of the canine world. Pugs are often intelligent, which can lead to them being mischievous and headstrong when attempting to train them. Pugs are small in stature and were originally bred to be a lap dog, which results in many Pugs being very affectionate with their owners and wanting to be as close to them as possible. Aggression in Pugs Though Pugs can be very friendly and loving, they can become aggressive when not properly socialized. Aggression in Pugs is often manifested in barking, lunging, nipping, or growling. Pugs may be trying to establish dominance within a space that they feel is their territory through this behavior. Often, aggression in Pugs is also the result of a fear response. When a Pug is not properly socialized with other dogs , people, children, and noises, Pugs will react adversely when it comes into contact with these people, animals, or sounds due to their own anxiety and fear. Pugs may also only exhibit aggression within a certain context, known as a trigger, which is a unique situation that brings out a certain behavior in the Pug. Triggers vary widely between dogs depending on the breed, individual personality, and socialization as a puppy. Pugs may also demonstrate aggressive behavior in response to being left alone in an attempt to make their unhappiness known. Causes of Aggression in Pugs The causes of aggression in Pugs can vary greatly between dogs due to their genetics, socialization, training, and environment. If a Pug has one parent that is aggressive in nature, that may be passed down and may be a reaction exhibited by the puppy as well. In addition, if a puppy grows up around a parent that frequently shows aggressive behavior, they will begin to mimic this behavior as they become an adult. Another frequent cause of aggression in Pugs is a lack of proper training and socialization. Having a dog is a tremendous commitment and requires an owner willing to dedicate the time and resources necessary to show their dog the world and teach them how to properly respond to it. In addition, Pugs that have been abused or frequently exposed to high-stress, traumatic situations may also develop aggressive behaviors. Another possible cause of aggression in Pugs is a negative developmental experience that has left a lasting impression. One example is if a Pug puppy is introduced to another dog that tries to bite your dog or is overly rough with him, then your pup may respond negatively in the future when meeting a different dog because it remembers his prior negative experience and has developed a fear response. Preventing Aggression in Pugs Though Pugs can develop aggressive behaviors, they do not always exhibit aggression and innate aggressive behaviors can be remedied through training and dedication. One of the most important things you can do to help prevent aggression in your Pug is to properly train and socialize him for the entirety of his life. As owners, you teach your dog how to see and respond to the world around them. It is important to put your Pug in a variety of situations with different people, dogs, children, sounds, objects, so that if any aggressive behavior arises, you can correct it and teach your dog to respond differently in the future. Pugs are sweet. Many call them their babies. Phrases like aggressive Pugs or Pug fighting seems like oxymoron. Pugs are so friendly, and the most lovable, easy-going dog on the planet, the idea of them fighting or being aggressive just seems absurd! Pugs do fight more than we want to admit. Fortunately, underneath that bad behavior is still a sweet Pug baby. So, the success rate of getting them to stop them fighting is high. And they will go back to being your sweet, lovable Pugs as were meant to be. Pug puppies and even Pug dogs can get pretty rough and tumble. Some say Pug puppies can be aggressive. When they are very, very young, they spend most of the time that they are awake, wrestling with their littermates. Playing like this at a young age is a good thing, and part of their social development. Mom and their littermates teach them to not to be aggressive Pugs. Front end down and back end up in the air. Sometimes your Pug baby will slap her front legs on the floor repeatedly. There are no winners or losers. One minute Mimi is chasing Lulu, and the next minute, Lulu has turned around and is after Mimi. They are not being aggressive Pugs. The larger or stronger dog may self-handicap. He may put himself at a disadvantage like lying down, rolling over, or letting the Pug puppy walk on him. Play-growling can sound very serious. Growling is loud and exaggerated, but not aggressive. Their mouths may be wide open while attempting to growl, but no one is clamping down on the other one. This is not aggressive Pug behavior. They keep going back for more. They have a wide-open mouth and a big goofy grin. There is no bouncing; no taking turns, just one Pug going in to make the strike. The hackles stand up on her back. Her body is stiff. Has your Pug ever turned into pure muscle? She may be on the verge of becoming an aggressive Pug. There are no big funny smiles or bouncing up and down. One Pug dog has disengaged and trying to get away from the other. Pugs with flat back ears and curled lips tell you they are not playing. They are being aggressive Pugs. Why You May have an Aggressive Pug Lack of Socialization and Training Although socialization and training are two entirely different things, I believe they go hand in hand or paw in paw. Socializing your Pug or Pug puppy dog at the dog park may or may not be the best thing for her. It is best to socialize your Pug in a dog training class. Generally speaking, everyone has their entire focus on their dogs. The dogs are well-behaved or at least kept in check until they become well-behaved. There is no room for aggressive Pugs in dog training classes. It is best to talk to some dog trainers to see if they incorporate proper socialization into their lessons, such as owners taking turns walking up to other owners while both dogs remain on leash. It is a good way for all dogs to get close to each other while respecting boundaries. Taking your Pug dog or puppy to the dog park has a lot of variables that you cannot control. If your Pug dog is the lone Pug at home and never been around other dogs, it may be overwhelming for him to go to the dog park on a busy Saturday. Bullying at the Dog Park Bullying can take place, and other owners may not understand how traumatizing it can be for a small Pug. The first time I took Mimi to a dog park, she was very young and also the lone Pug in the house at that time. There was a Pug meetup at the dog park, so I thought this would be a great time to introduce her to other dogs. Only friendly Pugs were going to be there. Mimi was timid with the other dogs, and the other Pugs quickly picked up on this. Before I knew it, about 5 to 6 Pugs were chasing Mimi around. She was scared, with her ears pulled back. Some of the owners half-heartedly called their aggressive Pugs away, although the Pug dogs did not comply. Immediately, I picked Mimi up and got her to settle down in my arms. I attempted to put her back down on the ground, but I could see she was scared, and that was it for her that day. Fortunately, we did go to this group when she was older, and there were no long-lasting adverse effects. But there can be. A Pug can become traumatized and always be afraid of other dogs. It has affected their nervous system and, once triggered, can not talk themselves out of the emotional reactions. The same goes for our Pug dogs. Taking them back to the dog park after an event like that is okay sometimes. Sometimes not. If your Pug has been traumatized by aggressive Pugs or other dogs, they may be triggered by being there. Helping your Pug dog work through trauma can be a long process that requires a lot of patience on your part. Later I got Mimi and Lulu involved in training that built their confidence around other dogs, and no bullying was allowed. The message is that this rough behavior is a standard way to act with other dogs. Likewise, your Pug starts giving harsh treatment to other dogs. Raise your standards and keep your Pug safe and sweet. Otherwise, your Pug may think this is normal and act this way with other dogs. Or your Pug may be traumatized and out of their fear response, become aggressive with other dogs. Their fear may push them into a place where they think all dogs are aggressive. When Pugs or any dogs get overly excited, they may forget the social rules and fights starts. Another time of increased excitement is territorial barking. When two dogs see something on the other side of their fence or the mailman comes to the door, they may redirect the Pug aggression onto the other. These situations can trigger even the sweetest Pug to bite. It is crucial if there is something on the other side of the fence that is causing your Pug dogs distress to bring him inside. Bring your Pug inside if this happens. Firstly, our Pugs can not tolerate that type of heavy breathing for long periods. And it is not good for our Pugs or anyone to be left in a high distress situation for long periods of time. As already mentioned, dog parks can offer a lot of excitement in the environment. Also, other dogs may be protective of their ball or owner. He may aggressively approach your Pug dog or puppy. Uncrowded dog parks are better times to take your Pug, whether he is territorial and possessive or a sweet Baby Pug. Family vacations are a lot of fun. Family, friends, and their dogs that you and your Pug have not seen in a while can be stressful for your Pug. Make sure your Pug and all the dogs are safe, and no one needs a break. Be certain no dogs are showing beginning signs of aggression. You may be navigating your relationships, getting reacquainted with relatives and friends. The dogs may be figuring out their relationships with a lot of instincts about territory and protecting their owners. This could result in aggressive Pugs. Their fear response can result in their own aggression. Their fear response can look like barking, growling, lunging, and nipping. Given the opportunity to reach that other dog, they may become aggressive. Change in Routine We all like routine, even our Pug dogs. It tells us the world is a safe place, and we can expect what is going to occur next. This give build stress. We all like routine, even our Pug dogs. The stress has built up over time. You get that taken care of, get to work, and spill coffee on yourself before the meeting. There is too much going on at work, so we skip lunch. And it goes on like this until we get home and our child asks us to help him with his homework. This is how it can go with our Pug dogs also. Their owner skips their morning walk because she is in a hurry to get to work. The Fed-Ex person drops off a package and knocks on the door. That night there is a thunderstorm, and your Pug dog hides behind the couch. She ends up growling at you and backs up. She is exhibiting aggressive behavior. You conclude that your Pug dog is afraid of the thunderstorm, which is true. But throughout the day, many events increased her stress level, which you are not aware of. Pug Dogs Love Food, Bones, Toys, Sleeping Areas Dogs live in social groups, and if you have multiple dogs in the home, this hierarchy does exist and can change throughout the day or situation. This is my bone! Not exactly what you might call an aggressive move, but she is letting her know, using the least amount of energy that she can, that it is her toy. Here are some resources that your Pug dog may feel he or she needs to protect: Food Although Mimi and Lulu never had any fights over food, I put Lulu in her playpen when they eat. Before Lulu ate in her playpen, I would put both food bowls down on opposite sides of the room. They would start eating, and Mimi would run over towards Lulu to get her food. About halfway over, I believe Mimi realized that she just left her own bowl unattended and would go back. That seemed like a rather stressful meal for Mimi, so I began putting Lulu in her playpen. Now there are no running back and forth problems. Toys Toys are also a limited resource. Sometimes I buy a new toy, and it becomes the prized item. Both will do anything to get their teeth on that toy. Pug dogs may just play back and forth with the toy, but you never know. Watch for aggression. Bed Sleeping areas can be a problem. Sometimes there is a favorite bed or blanket that is the coveted position. Generally speaking, I go to bed about 20 minutes before the time I actually want to go to sleep. It is the same routine. Everyone has to get settled in. However, I feel like it is more than just getting comfortable. It has to do with who gets the prime spot with Mom that night. There is a lot of walking around, walking on top of me, and switching positions. Finally, everyone is settled in and feels content with their spot. Bones Bones are considered a high-value resource. I am speaking about the high-value bully stick or deer antler. Even dogs that get along great may show some signs of aggression when these are around. Attention Attention from Mom or Dad can feel like something a Pug needs to protect and get more of. Coming home from work can be a time to look for aggressive behavior. Do your Pugs greet you equally, or is one always pushing the other out of the way? Does one stare at the other Pug baby when you are giving her attention? Believe it or not, this is aggressive Pug behavior. We have an unusual situation in our house. When I give Mimi attention and kisses, if Lulu is nearby, she can not enjoy it. Comment below if this happens in your house. Changes in the Grumble Your Pug grumble has a ranking order, although it may be more challenging to see with Pugs as compared to Pitbulls. The higher-ranking Pug tolerates the lower-ranking members. That action reinforces that the higher-ranking Pug dog is at the top. When a higher-ranking Pug starts to become old and weak, a younger dog may step in. There are displays the younger-ranking dog will engage in to get the older higher-ranking dog to back down. It may be a form of mild aggression. The older Pug dog may get hurt as she is now weaker, may have medical issues. And those aches and pains of the older dog may lead her to be more aggressive. Sometimes dogs will strike out early in an attempt to get other dogs away. Getting romped on by Pug puppies or younger Pugs can be painful to an older Pug with stiff joints. However, the older dog may want to give up her top position and automatically defer. A mid-day afternoon nap followed by a cocktail sound much more pleasant. New Pug to the Grumble A new Pug added to the grumble makes changes in the social group. In such a scenario, the dogs will require some adjustments. The new Pug must find his place in the social hierarchy of the Pug grumble. Or he may be a Pug puppy without a care in the world, jumping all over everyone, oblivious to the signs the other Pug dogs are giving to respect their boundaries. If the new Pug is too assertive or the new Pug puppy is too carefree, there could be scuffles until everyone understands their place. Humans Owners can inadvertently fuel the fire of Pug problems. The owner may give too much attention to the new Pug baby in the grumble, making others jealous. The owner may intervene by trying to protect a lower-ranking dog. The Pug needs to learn to back off. If the owner intervenes by defending the lower-ranking Pug and correcting the higher-ranking Pug, this could escalate problems to aggressive Pug behaviors. We all do this type of behavior. You have school tomorrow. Same-Sex Pug Aggression Some breeds are more likely to engage in same-sex aggression than others. If you own two female or two male dogs, fighting is not unusual at all. Protective behavior or aggressiveness are not standard Pug traits. Therefore, there is a decreased likeliness for behavioral conflicts, but any breed may have this problem In nature, back in the day when wild Pugs roamed the land in grumbles, foraging for kibbles on their own, two males or two females of the same age would not be in the same social group. Once they matured, they leave the group to form groups of their own. Also, in the Pug pack, there were two separate hierarchies; one for males and one for females. It is also vital as hormonal changes in males and females can lead to same-sex Pug aggression or fighting. Dogs become socially mature between the ages of 12 to 36 months. Hormonal changes during heat cycles and pregnancy can increase the likelihood of fights, even between sweet Pug. However, when two females are close in age, there is a lot of competition. These fights occur, especially if the owner is around. Fights may occur over who gets in or out of the door first. I have to be very aware when I let my two females inside. There have been numerous times when I have had to tell everyone to calm down, going through the door. There can be squabbles over toys, food, treats, or the primo sleep location in bed. How to Prevent a Fight with Aggressive Pugs It is always better to prevent a fight, rather than try to break one up. Even two Pug babies can get pretty out of control. You must be willing to dedicate time and money to show your Pug baby the world and teach them how to live in it peacefully. Many people get Pugs because they are so easy going and lovable. However, our Pug dogs still need to learn to socialize with others. As I pointed out earlier in this article, a training arena may be the best place for that. If your Pug does not have problems with aggression, a proper training group will keep him safe while learning to navigate the world of dog socialization. And on the off chance your Pug dog is aggressive, regardless of the reason, we need to step in with socialization and proper training. Your Pug needs to be involved with different people, dogs, children, noises, other things, so if any problem arises, you can teach your Pug dog how to respond to it differently if she is aggressive or timid. Basic obedience training will help your Pug to listen to you better. Therefore, if your Pug is in a potentially volatile situation, you will be able to call him out of the situation or change his focus. Recognize Signals of Possible Fights One of the best ways to prevent fights is to pay attention and recognize subtle signs of conflict. Being watchful gives you an early on chance to separate the Pug dogs quickly and calm everyone down. Pay extra attention while at dog parks and other events where there are numerous dogs and people. Look for signals if there is a high-value item, such as a favorite toy or chew bone. Treats can lead to aggressiveness in Pugs. Watch for signals when they are having their extra rambunctious playtime. Also, if it has ever turned into a real fight, what happened just before it occurred. Look for the signs such as flat back ears, hackles standing up, and uneven winner and loser outcomes. If one Pug is always running and trying to get away, it is time to intervene. Intervene in a way that catches their attention, but is not aggressive. Yelling just adds to the arousal level and may increase the probability they will fight. That spit second lets me redirect them or call them to come to me. I also use a spray bottle. I used to use a long stream of water and spray it directly on them. Somewhere along the line, Lulu chewed on the end, and it only shoots a mist. So, I walk over and either just shake the bottle or shoot the mist. They stop and shake off. If your Pugs are outside and running back and forth with the dog on the other side of the fence, they may turn to their Pug pal on their side and direct their hostility on him. Give your Pugs some alone time is a family gathering or party with a lot of activity. If kids are rambunctiously running around, keep an eye on your Pugs. They may become overly excited, and a switch may flip that the kids are fighting, not playing. This in turn could create aggressiveness in your Pugs. You may notice that dogs rarely fight when then is no human in the room or area. Avoid dog parks if you have a dog that has a possessive demeanor. Not every dog is right for the dog park. Unfortunately, not everyone at a dog park has the same consideration, and even a docile dog can become involved in a fight. Even with this combination, they should be a few years apart. Like I said before, rarely are two dogs around the same age in a pack in the wild. Their wiring is for packs where males and females of different ages coexist. If you do have two females, the situation is not impossible. I think you have a better chance of creating natural harmony with Pugs as our Pugs are breed to be companion, loving dogs, as opposed to hunters, guardians, or aggressive types. Intervene if something looks like more than a minor squabble. You may need to spend more time in training sessions in a group setting. If you own two females or males and they are prone to fighting, never leave them alone together. They should be in separate rooms or crated. In our family, when I leave for work or the store, Lulu goes to her playpen. When I come out of my bedroom, dressed in work clothes, she runs into her playpen area. She has water, some toys, and a blanket. Separate will stop any aggressiveness with Pugs. As always, spaying and neutering your Pug dogs for other reasons is still a good idea. Same for Pugs. It could be their favorite toy, chew bones, high-value bones, like bully bones, treats, or their food bowl. They are more likely to be hyper-alert just as you are when some little kid tries to grab a handful of your Godiva chocolates. Feed your Pugs separately. I think this is always a good idea with Pugs. Most pugs, not all, are chowhounds. They love their dinner and breakfast. They love their food and are going to be more possessive than other dogs. Having two Pugs around food can lead to aggressive Pugs. Once finished, pick up their food bowls, clean them, and put them away. The sight of the other getting near their food bowl can be a trigger to defend what is rightfully theirs. Most dogs will hoard and become extremely possessive of bones and chew toys. If you need to take a bone away and are concerned your Pug dog is so possessive, he may nip you, distract him with something else and then remove it. Do not attempt to separate the aggressive Pugs by grabbing them. I have never known a Pug baby to bite anyone, but it could happen. Usually, I can get away with just shaking my water bottle near my Pugs, and they stop immediately. Overall, they are lovers, not aggressive fighters, so something like this should break them up. If more is needed, grab a baby gate or broom and put it between them. Make sure your loud noise is not you yelling. Your excitement can add to their excitement, escalating the entire situation, and make them more aggressive. The loud noise could be an air horn, door slam, or hitting a spoon on a pan lid. Generally, one loud, startling noise. Not a lot of yelling that is stimulating. I generally knock on the door or wall as if somone is coming over. They stop and look at the door. Once separated, put your Pug dogs in separate rooms. They will assess and evaluate what triggers the fights, who starts the fights, assesses their environment, and much more. These are not trainers. They are concerned with animals who are having behavior problems and set up programs to address and correct the issues. If this does not work, you will want to talk to your CAAB about dividing your home so your dogs can live separately or re-homing your Pug dog. If the dogs still live in a constant state of arousal even though they are separated, re-homing might be the best solution for the Pug dog, although heartbreaking for you. I have never heard of a Pug being re-homed due to aggressiveness. Work with your Veterinary and your Behaviorist to find the right option for your Pug. Hopefully, you will never have to take this route as Pugs are such a gentle breed, but if it does happen, you want to be sure to do what is in the best interest of your Pug dog. Although you can be hopeful, this does not mean it will be easy. Most likely, you will need to involve your Pug dog in group training and keep a watchful eye on their behaviors. Often they will exhibit a signal, sometimes slight, that they are getting annoyed or possessive and are about to lash out on another dog. Get your Pug dog spayed or neutered. Bringing another Pug into the grumble can take some thought on your part regarding sex and age of the new member. These are all life skills we teach our Pugs that do last a lifetime, and as an added bonus, we get to spend more time with our Pugs when training! Post navigation.

Keep in mind that these dogs require regular grooming sessions so that their coat stays healthy which means spending some time at home trimming nails! Lifespan Sociability In many cases, these dogs are not available from breeders. Some mixed breeds are popular enough to have breeders dedicated to them, but the German Shepherd Terrier is not one of them. Most dogs will come from accidental litters. A German Shepherd will accidentally end up breeding with a terrier, leaving the owner with a bunch of puppies to get rid of. As you might imagine, the puppies will often be extremely inexpensive. You may even be able to get them for free. However, they would not have undergone the genetic testing that breeders put their dogs through. Some backyard breeders produce this mixed breed, and they may be a better option than purchasing a puppy from an accidental litter. However, the quality of these puppies tends to shift a lot. There are few terriers that a German Shepherd can breed with, making accidental litters a bit difficult as well. Jack Russel Terriers are small, energetic dogs bred to hunt small rodents and protect farmland from pests. The American Staffordshire Terrier is a larger dog that was bred to fight other animals. They are largely kept as companion animals today, though they are also one of the few dog breeds that can handle wild boars and similar, dangerous animals. We recommend asking about the specific terrier used to produce the puppy before adopting them. The breed can affect their temperament significantly. In accidental litters, the identity of one parent may not be known. Some terriers are pretty large, which would produce a dog closer to the size of a German Shepherd. They may weigh as little as 20 pounds or as much as 60 pounds. Often, they are at least somewhat protective. Sometimes, they can be extremely protective, while this trait is less pronounced in other instances. Where their protective instincts fall depends on the genetics they inherit from both parents, as well as how they were raised. Dogs that are heavily socialized at a young age can often be friendly or at least not aggressive towards strangers. This canine will likely never be as friendly as a Labrador Retriever. Often, this breed is exceedingly intelligent. This makes them very easy to train. They are often very devoted to their owners and follow commands easily. However, it also means that they need regular mental stimulation to stay happy and healthy. Otherwise, they can become bored and destructive. With that said, most terriers are not as intelligent or trainable as a German Shepherd. They are still intelligent dogs. They require lots of mental stimulation and exercise. However, as long as you can meet their needs, these dogs are an excellent option for most experienced dog owners. Just be sure you can dedicate the time their temperament calls for before you adopt a puppy. Most are not scared of kids due to their larger size, especially if they have been socialized with children previously. However, sometimes, German Shepherd Terrier mixes can be pretty small. This weight is plenty small enough for some exuberant children to hurt. If a pound child falls on a pound dog, the dog could easily get hurt. Often, these dogs are great with members of their own family, including children. Be sure to keep this in mind if your child regularly has other kids over. The dog might not like them playing together very much, especially if things get a bit rough. In the end, it can be hit-or-miss with this mixed breed and smaller children. However, they are often great for active families with older kids. If you have small children, you may want to look elsewhere for a more appropriate breed. If you adopt these dogs as adults and know that they are on the larger end of the spectrum, they can be good in households with small children. Their protective instincts can be applied to unfamiliar dogs, especially if they come into their home. However, most are completely fine with dogs they have been raised with. However, it takes socialization to make your German Shepherd Terrier mix accept other dogs. We highly recommend puppy classes at an early age. Group classes are great for training and socialization. In fact, we recommend them primarily because they provide a great socialization opportunity that is safe and controlled. They will chase cats and anything else that they interpret as prey animals. Because this is an innate instinct and not fear-driven, socialization will not help you. They will still see it as something to chase. For example, bigger dogs require more food which means added costs on your part and are not allowed in some hotels or retail stores that set a limit on the size of the pet allowed in their premises. On the other hand, small dogs are generally more difficult to train and are usually more aggressive. But when it comes to dogs that are bred from small and big dogs, it may be more difficult to decide how you ought to raise it. Take, for example, a Shepherd Terrier mix. All Shepherd Dogs require enough exercise and mental stimulation to avoid getting restless over time. Small breeds, however, require less intense exercise. When it comes to their physical appearance, each of their genomes have around six or seven factors that affect their overall appearance. If a dog were a purebred born from two German Shepherds, for example, you can expect them to grow around 20 to 40 kg and up to 65 cm tall. In comparison, a healthy Shih Tzu would only weigh around 4 to 7 kg and grow up to 30 cm. In some cases, a mixed breed may resemble one parent and have recessive traits of the other parent which they may pass down to future offspring. In other cases, your dog may show characteristics of two breeds take a look at this mixed Corgi German Shepherd. Source: buzzfeed. The same goes with Shepherd dogs which can weight around 14 Schnauzer up to 65 kg Anatolian Shepherd. Your Shepherd Terrier mix can range between any of these weights. Puppies that are destined to grow big will have relatively bigger paws. If, for example, your dog is a White Shepherd breed, you can expect them to grow up to 40 kg. Knowing how big their weight is can help you prepare enough for the future. PetMD offers a recommendation on how often and how much you should be feeding your pet. For example, stereotypes dictate that big dogs are actually very lovable despite their size while small dogs are a yapping nightmare with a bark worse than their bite. This video about dogs that protect their owner even seems to prove that smaller dogs make a better guard dog despite their size. However, breed size is only one of many factors that affect temperament. A dog showered with love and affection and given walks daily are likely to be more relaxed than dogs that are mistreated and locked in small spaces every day. Terriers, on the other hand, are normally used to remove outdoor pests. However, both these dogs tend to be active due to their build, so expect to have an active lifestyle if you want to provide this type of dog with enough exercise. The bigger it is, the more frequent exercise it requires. Remember, welcoming a dog into your home is like welcoming a new family member into your life. Doing otherwise may result in accidentally mistreating your pets by not providing enough to satisfy their needs. Before deciding to adopt a GSD-terrier mix, there are a few key points to consider. This highly active dog will need plenty of room and exercise to stay healthy. If you plan on getting a GSD-terrier mix, ensure you have enough space at home for them. If not, enable access to an outdoor area where they can play safely. In addition, this dog requires regular exercise, grooming, and training to grow into a loyal companion. Make sure you have enough time to give your dog love and attention, and take them for walks and playtime. If you have young children or other pets at home, make sure they can socialize comfortably with your new pet. Food Feeding your Shepherd Terrier mix means tailoring their diet to meet their individual needs. Generally, this breed requires a high-protein diet with plenty of natural fat sources for energy and strength. Look for dog food specifically formulated for medium to large-size breeds, as these formulas are designed to provide optimal nutrition. Split feeding into two or three meals per day but make sure you stick to a consistent schedule. This way your GSD-terrier mix can get used to meal times and avoid overeating. In addition to regular meals, you should also offer healthy treats and snacks throughout the day. Look for natural options like fruits and vegetables, as well as meat-based treats designed specifically for dogs. Exercise Exercise is essential for this breed, especially for the full grown German Shepherd Terrier mix, as it helps maintain their musculoskeletal health and energy levels. This breed needs at least an hour of exercise daily and should be taken on long walks or hikes to keep them entertained. This breed loves to play, so engage your dog with numerous toys and activities. Consider getting a ball launcher or frisbee if you want something a bit more challenging for your pup. Another option is to take them to agility classes for some extra stimulation. Grooming Grooming is an important part of caring for the Terrier and Shepherd mix. To keep your pup looking its best, brush them every day with a firm bristle brush to remove tangles and mats. Check for fleas and ticks regularly — you may want to invest in some flea treatment shampoo to help keep your pet free from parasites. Bathing should be done once or twice a month, depending on how dirty your pup has gotten since the last wash. Use lukewarm water and high-quality dog shampoo for that specific breed. After washing, make sure to thoroughly dry your pup with a towel and blow dryer. Training Activities This breed loves to learn, and regular training sessions will help keep them mentally stimulated and obedient. Once they understand these basics, you can move on to more advanced commands like agility or tracking activities which require a lot of focus and concentration from your pet! Not only will this breed be well-behaved and obedient, but they will also have better social skills when interacting with other dogs or people. Finally, a trained GSD-terrier mix is less likely to develop behavior problems such as excessive barking or chewing, which you can prevent through early training. Generally speaking, male German Terriers tend to be more muscular and slightly larger than the females. They may exhibit more dominant behavior and can be more territorial and protective of their home and family. They may also require more exercise throughout the day and need firm training early on to help control their strong personalities. On the other hand, a female Terrier mix with German Shepherd is typically smaller and more agile than its male counterpart. They may be more nurturing and affectionate and be less likely to exhibit aggressive or dominant behavior. In terms of health, female German Shepherds are more prone to certain conditions than males. These include issues related to the reproductive system, such as mammary tumors and pyometra a uterus infection. Females also tend to have a shorter lifespan than males — usually around years compared to for males. Both male and female German Shepherd Terrier mix puppies may be prone to certain conditions due to their hybrid genetics. For example, they may be more susceptible to hip dysplasia, a condition that affects the hip joints and can cause pain and mobility issues. Respiratory problems and certain skin allergies may be a problem. Spaying or neutering your German Shepherd Terrier mix dog helps mitigate these health issues. It can also help to reduce aggressive or dominant behavior, which can be especially important for male German Terriers. This mixed breed is an excellent option for those who want a mid-sized dog that does not shed too much and is relatively easy to groom. Size Adult dogs of this breed can range from 24 to 32 inches in height, while they could also range from a few centimeters shorter or taller than this. So, the cross between the two breeds can result in a medium or large dog. Although male German Shepherd terriers are generally larger and taller than their female counterparts, both genders will have an athletic body that is lean but muscular and compact. Males can weigh from 65 to 90 pounds. On the other hand, females can weigh from 50 pounds up to 70 pounds. Coat Colors This hybrid dog breed has a double coat that can result in moderate to severe shedding. During the periods when they shed significantly, they will also produce a lot of furs. These dogs can become extremely friendly, loving, and confident when given positive reinforcement and proper socialization opportunities at an early age. However, they will not reach the same level of friendliness as a Labrador Retriever. Highly Trainable The extreme intelligence of the breed makes them easy to train. They can also become devoted to their owners. But they also require plenty of mental stimulation to stay healthy and happy. Otherwise, they can exhibit destructive behavior if you do not channel their energy in the right direction. But one of the red flags every dog owner should know about a mixed breed is that you should not expect them to perform the same as purebred dogs. Since most terriers do not have the trainability and intelligence level of German Shepherds, mixed breeds may also not display these characteristics. The breed is also a good guard dog. Its loyalty and protective nature can help keep your home and family safe from threats, intruders, or even strangers. Overall, a German Shepherd mix can be the ideal pet for you and your family. They need proper training and a loving owner to reach their full potential. They are not recommended for first-time dog owners due to the challenging nature of this breed. But if you are up for the challenge, you will be rewarded with an energetic, intelligent companion for life. But the higher life expectancy can be threatened by several health issues, including hip and elbow dysplasia, glaucoma, deafness, bloat, patellar luxation, degenerative myelopathy, and allergies. Dog owners should also recognize the importance of ensuring their pets may also suffer from obesity. You can prevent this health issue by setting up a regular exercise routine and feeding them nutritious foods. You should also ensure to bring your pet to a veterinarian regularly. The veterinarian can help to diagnose any health issues and recommend the proper medications if required. German Shepherd: The German Shepherd is a popular breed of dog that is known for its loyalty and obedient nature. Originating in Germany, the German Shepherd was originally bred as a working dog for herding sheep. However, the breed quickly became popular with police and military forces due to their trainability and intelligence. German Shepherds are now one of the most popular breeds of dogs in the world, and they are often used as service dogs or companion animals. Known for their loyalty, strength, and courage, German Shepherds make excellent pets for families with active lifestyles. The breed was named after a man named Jack Russell, who was an avid hunter and is credited with developing the first dogs that we would recognize as Jack Russell Terriers. These dogs were bred for their hunting abilities, and they quickly became popular among other hunters. In the early s, the Jack Russell Terrier was brought to America, where they became one of the most popular breeds of dogs. Today, Jack Russell Terriers are still used as hunting dogs, but they are also popular as pets. They are known for their high energy level, their intelligence, and their loyalty. This mix can range in size from small to large, depending on the size of the parents. German Shepherd Terriers are typically medium to large dogs, with males averaging between 65 and 90 pounds and females averaging between 50 and 70 pounds. They also have a variety of coat types, including short, medium, and long. The undercoat is soft and dense, while the outer coat is coarser and longer. The most common coat colors for this mix are black and tan, but they can also be black, gray, cream, white, or even brindle. Some dogs may have markings on their face, chest, or legs. Originally bred as working dogs, German Shepherd Terriers have a strong work ethic and are intelligent and trainable. They are confident and assertive, but also social and loving with their family and friends. While they are active dogs that need plenty of exercise, they make great companion animals for an active family. They are also known for their loyalty and protective nature, making them excellent guard dogs. German Shepherd Terriers need a great deal of training, and they are best suited to homes with large yards or access to nearby parks or trails. Their owners should be prepared to commit to several daily walks or runs, as well as regular opportunities for playtime and socialization. These dogs are quick learners, but they can also be stubborn, so consistent training is essential. German Shepherd Terriers need firm, patient handling to flourish, but with proper guidance, they can be great companions. They make excellent family pets and are particularly well-suited for homes with children. However, this mixed breed can also be aggressive, especially if they feel threatened or protective of their family. In general, the aggression levels of German Shepherd Terrier mixes depend on a number of factors, including their ownership history, socialization experience, and overall temperament. With proper training and socialization, however, this mixed breed can learn to control their aggression and become loving and gentle companions. A minimum of one hour of exercise per day is recommended, although two hours would be ideal. This can include walks, runs, fetch, and other activities that will keep your dog mentally and physically stimulated. Otherwise, they may become destructive or start barking excessively. German Shepherd Terrier Mental Stimulation German Shepherds are known for their intelligence, loyalty, and trainability. They are often used as working dogs in a variety of settings, such as law enforcement and search and rescue. As a result, they require a great deal of mental stimulation to stay happy and healthy. A German Shepherd Terrier mix is likely to inherit these same traits. An owner should be prepared to provide their dog with plenty of opportunities for mental stimulation, such as interactive toys, daily walks or runs, and training exercises. By doing so, they can help their dog to lead a happy and fulfilling life. German Shepherd Terrier Grooming Needs These mixed-breed dogs need a regular grooming routine to keep their coat healthy and clean. The good news is that German Shepherd Terriers are relatively easy to groom. Their coat is composed of two layers: a dense undercoat and a shorter outer coat. The undercoat helps to protect the dog from cold weather, while the outer coat repels water and dirt. Weekly brushing will help to remove loose hair and prevent mats from forming. German Shepherds are known for being active dogs, so your mix will likely need a lot of calories to maintain its energy levels. Make sure to choose a high-quality food that is rich in proteins and fats. You should also avoid foods that are high in carbohydrates, as this can lead to weight gain. Of course, every dog is different, and some may be more reserved around other dogs than others. However, in general, these mixes make great playmates for other canines. They also tend to do well in social situations, such as dog parks and doggy Daycare. This is likely due to their German Shepherd heritage. German Shepherds are known for being loyal and protective, two traits that can be beneficial when it comes to kids. With proper socialization, German Shepherd Terrier mixes can make great playmates for kids of all ages. German Shepherd Terrier Drooling Levels One potential downside of these dogs is that they tend to drool a lot. This is because their jowls are quite long, making it difficult for them to keep saliva in their mouths. However, this is generally considered to be a small price to pay for the companionship of these amazing animals. German Shepherd Terrier Barking Levels While this mix can take on some characteristics of either parent breed, one thing that is generally consistent among German Shepherd Terrier mixes is their high level of barking. German Shepherds are very intelligent and easily trained, so this trait can be directed towards other forms of communication, such as barking at strangers or animals that they perceive as a threat. However, if not properly trained, a German Shepherd Terrier mix can become excessively vocal, making them an unsuitable choice for some households. If you are considering adding a German Shepherd Terrier mix to your family, be sure to do your research and find a reputable trainer who can help you manage their barking behavior. German Shepherd Terrier Weather Tolerance German Shepherd Terriers are bred to be working dogs, so they are very tolerant of all kinds of weather conditions. This includes both hot and cold weather. German Shepherds were originally bred in Germany, where the climate can range from freezing cold winters to hot summers. As a result, these dogs have a thick double coat that helps them regulate their body temperature in extreme conditions. German Shepherds are also known for being prone to certain health conditions, such as hip and elbow dysplasia, which can shorten their lifespan. German Shepherd Terriers that are mixed with another breed may be less expensive than purebreds, but they can still be quite costly. German Shepherd Terriers are not the right breed for everyone, but if you are prepared to invest the time and money into training and care, they can make wonderful companions. Final Thoughts German Shepherd Terriers are intelligent, loyal, and protective dogs that make great additions to many families. However, they require a lot of exercise and training, and their high level of barking can be problematic for some households. Be the first to know when we have new puppies! All Rights Reserved. I used to have a loving home. My owner and I were the best of friends. We lived a more simple life and that was just fine with me. .I was perfectly content with my life. I had a home, a person, and a routine that I was familiar with.I never imagined that I would one day end up in need of a new family. I thought I had found the family that I would spend the rest of my life with. Life has a funny way of throwing curve balls your way though. My owner ended up having to move, and sadly I wasn't allowed to go with them. My owner ended up leaving me with family, but they were not able to keep me either as they had their own animals. They reached out to PPFT for help in placing me, and thankfully I ended up having a foster family step up for me! This was my 3rd time switching homes in a short time period and I was quite nervous when I first entered my foster home. I felt so defeated. I had lost everything I had ever known twice now and had no idea what was going to happen to me. My foster family and the pets in the home have done a wonderful job at welcoming me home though, and I have really started to open up. I am a big boy and weigh around 94lbs. Apparently, I stand to lose a few pounds but given how much I love food.I don't know how likely that is to happen! If I see an opportunity to snatch some food off the table or out of the trash.I will do so before you even realize what happened! For some reason, this is frowned upon so my new family should make sure the trash can has a lock on it or is put up and that there is no food left on the counter. I am not really into exercise. That is probably another reason I am a bit on the "fluffy" side. I really enjoy naps and lounging around the house. I am not someone who is into always going places and getting their sweat on.Walks would be okay as long as they aren't too long and the weather is nice out. I am not a fan of this heat and have no desire to stay outside longer than I have to. The good news is that I have impeccable house manners. But let's not focus on that part. Let's focus on the part where I am potty trained, haven't been a chewer, and can be trusted to free-roam the house! I have no experience being kenneled and would prefer a family that won't kennel me either since it simply isn't necessary for me. I have canine companions in my foster home and do well with them. Now, I am not a player so don't get in hopes of becoming besties with your very energetic pup. I prefer to keep to myself when it comes to the other dogs and seem indifferent to them. If my family was home a lot, I believe I would love getting to be the only dog. However, I would also be just as happy having doggie companions as long as they were cool, calm, and collected like myself! I am also being fostered around cats and do well with them. I don't think I would be a match for a family that has younger kids as I do startle easily. Fast movements do startle me, and I do get nervous when I don't understand what you want me to do. Given that I am a large and independent male, I don't like being led by my collar either. Using a leash or treats are much more appealing to me if you want me to go somewhere with you. I will need a calm and gentle family that understands that I am an independent boy and don't want to be "coddled". Now with that said, I LOVE attention and being with my people but I am not a dog you can just run up to and smother in kisses and hugs as quick movements spook me. I like gentle pets and loving. This is to help ensure that it is not only a good fit for you, but for me as well. I am being fostered in Kiowa, OK. If you have fallen in love with me and are out of state, how about a road trip? PPFT doesn't send us on commercial transports. I bet you thought that was the end of things, huh? Well, it just so happens that I would like to share what my foster mom says about me "Happie is a laid-back and easygoing boy. He does well with other dogs and cats but is indifferent to both. I don't think he cares if they are there or not. He has excellent house manners, has not been destructive, and is potty trained. He likes to come up on the couch and cuddle sometimes, but he is not a super affectionate dog. He respects your space and isn't pushy about attention but melts into you when you do pet him. Happie flinches at fast movements and sometimes becomes easily nervous so he will need a calm and patient family. A home that has a lot of activity going on or is really noisy wouldn't be a good fit for him. He would do best with a more laid-back family with older kids that know to go slow and be gentle with him. He doesn't like being grabbed and led by the collar either, so his new family should use a leash if they want him to go somewhere with them. As mentioned above he does become nervous and unsure what to do when he doesn't know what you are asking of him. Happie is the one for you! Happie would do best in a quieter more laid-back home. He would love being an only dog, but would also do just fine if his new home had calmer dogs. Hope to see you apply for me!

Who Should Get a Male Labrador? Males tend to be beefier and heavier, and because of this, their features and muscles are more attractive. People who like competing in dog shows might choose a male if the dog meets the qualifications. But be aware that they are hard to come by. The greatest dogs for first-time dog owners are male Labradors that live in homes with yards. They should always be able to engage with someone due to their ongoing desire for attention and assurance. Males require a lot of space to roam around since they often have larger bodies and a silly, enthusiastic disposition. Who Should Get a Female Labrador? Females are better for guardianship responsibilities and single people, but they also make wonderful family members. They can manage to live in a space as tiny as an apartment as long as they receive lots of daily walks and exercise. Pros Female Labrador is active and loves to play around you. Relatively easy to train because of its energetic and observing nature. More protective than male Labradors and becomes easily suspicious of strangers. She is independent, which is loved by dog parents. She needs less maintenance. Female Labrador is less social. If you want a great companion who is showering unconditional love on you, then you must go ahead with a male Labrador. However, if you are willing to adopt a guarding dog with a moody and independent nature, never asking for love, you must select a female Labrador. Differences between Male and Female Labradors 1. Size Size is a significant difference between male and female labs. Nothing new, male labs are slightly larger as compared to female dogs. If you want a giant and bossy Labrador , then adopt a male one. While on the other hand, if you want a normal-sized, independent, and self-caring pup, go ahead with a female Labrador. Gender is the only factor that directly affects the size of labs. Features Due to hormonal differences, gender shows changes in features. Male dogs are somehow rough when compared to female Labradors. Trainability Most experts say that female puppies are easy to train compared to male Labradors. In addition, female Labradors are more attentive so they learn each new behavior fast. People who are willing to raise a guarding dog are more biased toward female Labradors. Behavior Despite their cool and calm nature, male labs are aggressive when compared to female Labradors. As mentioned above, female labs are independent, and they are more independent. While on the other hand, male Labradors love to please their parents more than they care about themselves. Male Labradors keep demanding the lap of their owners while female Labradors never mind playing alone without asking for attention. So, by keeping all the behavioral facts in mind, select your Labrador accordingly. Reproduction behavior Last but not least, reproduction and the heat cycle behavior is another significant difference in male and female Labradors. As a result, both genders behave differently in their breeding season. Most female Labradors are attracted to male dogs when they are in the heat cycle. Female Lab secretes a liquid, which becomes the source to attract mates , and in the case of the indoor dog, she may feel pain. While on the other hand, the males run behind the female dogs and chase them whenever they want. Even some male labs do not wait for the breeding season to get attracted to the lady lab. Males and females both show aggression toward the other dogs soon after getting neutered. Proper training can make your lab behave well in this situation. Showing affection Male dogs are highly expressive and like to show their love and care for their parents. While on the other hand, the female lab likes to be left alone. Female Labrador loves their parents as males do, but females are less expressive than male labs. Treat you as if you should earn her love. Tend to show less affection. Will be happy for her human to come to her. More cautious around kids. Gets along well with male dogs. Tends to be less playful all the time. Slightly less food motivated except when pregnant. The male Labrador Retrievers tend to be more energetic and affectionate to their humans. They are slightly more dependent on their owners in comparison to their female counterparts. Male Labs are easier to please as they seem to be content just having family members around them. Meanwhile, the female Lab is deemed more independent and is less attached to their human owners. This is not to say that female Labs are not affectionate. If they are smothered with love, they will definitely reciprocate. Females, however, have a slight advantage when it comes to intelligence and trainability. Some studies show that female Labs mature earlier than male Labs and can be trained as early as seven months. Affection Scale All dogs, regardless of their breed, are capable of showing affection and attention to their humans. No one in the world who can welcome you home at the end of the day, the way a dog would. With that said, Labrador Retrievers are known to be extremely mushy when it comes to showing their love. Males The Male Labrador is typically considered more affectionate than the females. However, the difference can be so subtle that owners might not even notice. The males tend to cling to their owners for affection and will likely display their exuberance when rewarded with treats. They just show their love a little differently. Since females tend to be more independent, some people might mistake it as being aloof. But in reality, they are more than happy to have their humans near them. Aggressiveness and Dominance One of the many reasons why Labrador Retrievers are a favorite among other breeds of dogs is because of their gentle demeanor. They also never show any sign of dominance. In some cases, your Lab might accidentally push past you through the door or take up space on the couch. This can be mistaken as a sign of dominance by first time Lab owners. However, these are associated with behavioral issues and have nothing to do with them being dominant. In some very rare instances, your Lab might show some signs of aggression or dominance, but this has more to do with their upbringing and environment. The male Lab might show signs of aggressiveness when he is protective of their things, such as his toys, bed, food, and owners. Meanwhile, if a male Lab is feeling dominant, he will likely hold his tail stiff, wagging back and forth. He will make a bold stance, his ears will be up, and his neck will appear bigger. Females Like their male counterparts, female Labs are not usually aggressive or dominant; however, they will only show their aggressiveness toward other female dogs. Because of this trait, they are often picked to become hunting, service, guide, and K-9 dogs. Males Because of their big and jolly personality, the male Lab can be more challenging to train in comparison to female Labs. They are easily distracted, especially during mating season when a female dog is around. They tend to hump, mark, and chase female dogs, resulting in a slower training pace. Females This is where the female Labs get the spotlight. Females mature faster during the puppy stage, which makes them learn tricks quicker. But also bear in mind that regardless of what breed of dog you choose to own, they will not learn on their own. Pet parents need to have the patience and dedication to teach their dogs how to behave properly. Male vs. Are Labrador Retrievers too friendly by nature to become guard dogs? The majority of Labs fail at being guard dogs because of their warm and happy personalities. But for those who are wondering, can they be trained to be guard dogs? Generally speaking, any dog, if trained properly, could. Guard dogs do more than just bark. Sometimes it comes naturally depending on the breed, but oftentimes, dogs have to be trained to become one. Their purpose is to protect properties or their owners in case a threat presents itself. Guard dogs will be ready to attack and bite when necessary. Meanwhile, watchdogs are simply dogs that watch. A good watchdog keeps an eye out for any intruders around. Sometimes, all you really need is a loud bark from a large dog to scare an intruder away. But in the end, will the male Lab be better at the job? Or will the female ace it? Males Males have a natural tendency to protect their territory, which means they will make good watchdogs. However, they have lesser control over their aggression. The challenge will be to train the male Lab to stop barking on command. Females The female Lab is protective by nature due to their maternal instinct. She will have no problem watching over those who are important to her. The advantage of the female Lab when it comes to being watchdogs is their level of trainability. As mentioned earlier, female Labs are easier to train than males. They are more manageable to control and would calm down easily when they are told. This means your male or female dog will be infertile. But if you want your dog to have offspring, then leave them intact. There are a few differences between an intact and a neutered dog. But when it comes to male and female Labs, will these differences matter? Males The process of neutering among male dogs is called castration, which is the process of removing its testicles. Some people believe that neutering their male Labs will fix behavioral issues like humping and marking. However, some studies show that neutering male Labs pose more problems than keeping them intact. Regarding physical effects, the difference in intact and neutered male Labs is quite apparent. Your neutered Labrador will have no testicles. Those who are neutered before they reach sexual maturity will look more feminine because of their smaller head. An intact male Lab will also be a little taller compared to ones that have been neutered. Females When it comes to female Labrador Retrievers, owners often decide to spay them because of convenience and health reasons. Spaying female dogs require major abdominal surgery wherein their reproductive organs are removed. It takes about two weeks for your dog to recover from this traditional procedure fully. A less invasive option is the laparoscopic spay. During this procedure, a small incision is made to remove only the ovaries. Similar to males, female intact Labs are taller compared to those that have been spayed. Some owners spay their females, especially if they have male dogs around the house. Others do it for health reasons. Studies have shown that spaying your female Lab decreases the risk of developing diseases in the future like mammary cancer and pyometra. In doing so, this will give you a better perspective on how to care for them and make sure they are in tip-top shape. Just like other breeds, Labrador Retrievers have specific health risks they might be prone to. For instance, they could develop hip problems if left unfit and inactive because of their large build. While these are general health problems specific to the breed, some health issues are only particular to males and females. Males The male Labrador Retriever is prone to perineal tumor and hernia, especially in old age. Females Female Labradors are vulnerable to developing urinary tract infections because of how they urinate. They tend to crouch down lower, which puts them at risk of contracting bacteria found on the ground. It is advisable to walk your Lab for at least one hour every day to avoid muscle degeneration, obesity, and joint problems. Hormonal Differences It takes years for humans to reach their adolescent years while it only takes a couple of months for dogs before they begin to flirt around other dogs. Most dog breeds reach sexual maturity around 6 to 7 months, which is usually when owners decide to spay or neuter them. When it comes to Labs, females are also ahead in this category as they reach hormonal maturity faster than the males. Males There are some important things to consider before deciding to neuter your male Labrador. Most experts recommend waiting until they are two years of age since premature neutering can lead to certain physical and hormonal implications. Male Labs tend to reach their fertility peak between their 12th and 15th month. They can also be sexually charged all year round. Some telltale signs that your male Lab is in heat is when they start marking properties and start humping furniture and toys. Owners also need to be informed about the difference between vasectomies and castration. Vasectomies do not stop the male hormones that cause some undesirable behaviors. During the surgery, the dog will be under anesthesia. You may notice that his attraction to females, his humping, and mounting will be lessened. Females Similar to the male Labrador, spaying your female Lab should ideally wait until she reaches two years old. However, this can be a little tricky since they first start entering heat between 7 and 12 months. This becomes harder when you have an unneutered male around the house. A female dog in heat will be moody and needy. Her nipples will be swollen, and she might be sensitive to touch. Some people believe that spaying their female dogs will eliminate negative behavioral issues. While this breed is friendly by nature, there are still some differences between how a male and a female Lab will interact when exposed to other animals. Males The male Lab will likely be competitive when it comes to their food and territory. Their interaction with cats and other types of animals is a different story. However, they might get too excited about playing and cause a ruckus or injure smaller animals. Females As mentioned earlier, the female Lab can have a hard time getting along with other female dogs. They are generally aggressive towards other female dogs due to their competitive nature, and because of this, they tend to take ownership of their food, their owners, and their territory against other females. Experts advise getting female dogs as puppies if you intend to have them live together. This way, they can grow up and be familiar with each other. While they are aggressive towards females, they can tolerate other animals like cats. This is due to their nurturing and protective instincts. With Children This is what most families want to know when they are getting ready to introduce a dog to their home. The good news is that Labrador Retrievers are great with children. But the same question remains, who gets along with children better? Males The male Lab is an ultimate attention seeker. They will love the attention given to them by children. However, parents still need to keep a close watch and be cautious when they start playing. Similar to what was said earlier, smaller children may get hurt when male Labs get too excited playing. This is the reason why female Labradors are preferred for families with small kids. Also, if you want your Lab to have stronger features, then you might want to get a male. But if you want your dog to have softer features, then you should choose the female. Labs do get along with most breeds but bear in mind that females tend to dislike female dogs if they did not grow up together. Lifestyle: Do you leave the house a lot? Do you have the time and patience to clean up her mess that will probably last two or more weeks? The male Lab is a lot less work regarding this particular subject. Children: Do you have children? How old are they? They tend to be more patient and tolerable towards toddlers. Meanwhile, the male Lab will see children as playmates. In order to avoid accidents while playing, male Labs should be paired with children much older and bigger so that they can handle them better. Social Biases in Popularity Before getting your own Lab, you might wonder which gender is already preferred by Labrador owners. Every home is different so it is important to choose a Labrador that fits in with your current lifestyle and living situation. Below we explore some Myths and Facts about male and female Labradors. Female Labradors are just as affectionate and in need of the same amount of attention as the male Lab — they just do not always show it in the same way. Females are more guarded with their affection, but males will shower you with unconditional love regardless of whether or not you approach them for affection on a regular basis. One could look at this difference in behavior and decide from it that female Labradors are more emotionally mature and secure than male Labradors. This is a myth. To a certain extent, it is true that males are generally bigger than females, but there are many cases where females are larger than males. It all depends on their particular genetics. They are so much more difficult than females are! Females are sometimes considered easier to control because males have a reputation for humping, marking, and chasing females in heat while out on a stroll. These behaviors are not a true reflection of all male Labradors. Many of these undesirable behavior traits can be remedied quite easily by neutering your pet. They are just natural urges that can be controlled with a bit of training or strategic distraction. While males can sometimes be slower to train, they are certainly very intelligent and by no means difficult to train at all. Fact: Unspayed Female Labs Can Be Moody Female Labradors that are not spayed can actually become quite moody and bad-tempered, especially when they are in heat. This is obviously less noticeable than humping, marking, and chasing, but can still be an unpleasant characteristic. Spaying a female fixes the moodiness and temper quite effectively, so it is not to say that a female Lab is a bad choice because of her potential mood swings. Fact: Female Labs Can Be Easier to Train Than Males Some believe that all Labradors are very easy to train, and while this is true, it must be noted that the females tend to mature faster than the males and therefore learn quite a bit quicker during their puppy phase. Males can lag behind a bit, but will still be well ahead of other dogs in the training class. This is true of most litters and something that many breeders and trainers have noticed. Sorry boys — the girls have got this one! Differences in Official Breed Standards Of course, some Lab owners are more interested in the breeding standard differences between female and male Labradors than they are in their personality and temperament differences. If you are one of those people, here is a bit of information that might interest you. Do not panic if your pet does not seem to match up to these standards. These are guidelines for show dogs. Pets that do not fall within the AKC breed standard range can still be great family pets. However, non-compliance means that Labs cannot compete in AKC conformation classes and should not be used for breeding. If you are not competing and your Labrador is healthy and happy, there is no reason to stress about these standards and differences. The standard expects male Labradors to grow to a height of between .Female Labradors are typically a little shorter, with most growing to a height of between .Of course, this is just the expected norm and is not the case with all Labradors. According to the American Kennel Club breed standards, a full-grown male Labrador is typically heavier than a full-grown female Labrador. Often pet owners with small children or living with the elderly will choose a dog under a certain weight because they fear accidents when a dog becomes boisterous and potentially knocks someone over. That being said, females are typically chosen because they are considered to be lighter, smaller, and easier to physically handle than male Labradors. A fully grown adult female Labrador is expected to weigh between 55 lbs and 70 lbs. A full-grown adult male Labrador is expected to weigh between 65 lbs and 80 lbs. The average lifespan of both male and female Labradors is between 12 and .However, it is said that chocolate Labradors may have shorter life expectancies at around just 10 years. The National Geographic mentions in an article published in that it is not the color of the chocolate Lab that affects its shorter lifespan, but more the fact that harmful genes were introduced to the breed in order to achieve the Chocolate color. In , studies conducted in the UK uncovered some interesting statistics that took into account more than 30 Labradors. The outcome was that the median longevity of Labradors is typically 12 years. In fact, the Telegraph released an article that featured a male Labrador called Butch, who died at the age of 29 years in .A number of factors can affect how long or short your Labrador lives. How you care for and treat your Labrador can make all of the difference. Gender has very little to do with it. There are two main aspects that really impact how long your Labrador will live. The first is the inherited genetics from the parents. While you cannot control this, you can ask to take a look at the health and medical history of the parents, if you are buying your Labrador pup from a breeder. The second aspect is what happens to your Labrador during its life such as accidents, illnesses, injury, dietary issues and so on. Male vs Female Labradors: Differences in Personality If personality plays an important role in your decision-making, then understanding what sets the male and female apart in terms of attachment styles, affection, aggression, dominance, and independence is a good start to making the right choice. How Male and Female Labradors Attach to Humans Attachment is something that both male and female Labs are particularly comfortable with — they just do it differently. Both male and female Labradors love their human family members endlessly, but there is a definite difference between how they attach to them or at least, how they show it. While both need and give love, females tend to be more independent. They are not as attached or needy as the males tend to be. The male Labrador will swoon and show undying love whereas the female Labrador may treat you as if you should earn it. However, she is not really aloof by nature and if love and affection are freely shown to her, you will find that she will freely reciprocate. Male Labradors may seem easier to please as they will happily lie at your feet, satisfied just to be in your company, while female Labradors will need the experience to be a little more rewarding in order for them to give you their undivided attention. These are attachment style differences one might only be able to pick up on if they have a male and female Lab to compare. If you had one or the other, the difference in attachment or what is expected would not be particularly obvious. How Male and Female Labradors Show Affection Differently While both genders are affectionate, there is a difference in the level of affection given and required. Male Labradors are typically more affectionate than female Labradors, although the females will not shy away from affection. The difference is subtle and more seen as independence in the females. The male dogs tend to come to their humans for affection whereas the female will be happy for her humans to come to her. Treats can also impact on how affectionate the male Labrador is. Males tend to show more exuberance and, in general, can be more affectionate when there are treats at hand. Females are just as prone to loving treats, but they will not be particularly more affectionate for a treat. One might be surprised to hear if someone says that their Labrador is showing aggressive behavior, regardless of whether it is male or female. Both male and female Labradors are non-aggressive types of dogs and this is one of many reasons why they are such a popular family, child-friendly pet. Male Labradors only really get aggressive when they are feeling protective of their things toys, bed, space, food, humans. Female Labradors typically only show aggression to other female dogs. If your Labrador pushes past you through the door, takes up residence on your favorite couch, or accidentally pushes you down that is more a behavioral problem than a dominance issue. It is very rare for any Lab, male or female, to pin other dogs down or bully their owners. If they do get into a little scrape with another dog in the pack, it is usually over and done with quickly and very easily forgotten. With the correct puppy training from day one, neither male nor female Labradors display signs of dominance issues. That being said, it is never a good idea to believe that dominance issues will never arise. Some Labradors have shown dominant behavior. The male Labrador that is feeling dominant will generally hold his tail very high and stiff while wagging it bag and forth in a very obvious purposeful manner. This shows that your Labrador is feeling very confident and he is trying to communicate that he will not back down. He will also balance his weight on all legs and acquire a tense stance while making himself look a bit larger. Neck and head will be raised, ears will up and eyes will be forward and staring intently. Male Labradors showing dominant behavior will not bare their teeth or show any other signs of aggression. Female Labradors show dominance in a more independent and intellectual manner. Males can also show similar patterns of dominant behavior though it is rarer for them to do so. Independence is one of the biggest differences noted between male and female Labradors. Generally speaking, both male and female Labradors do not like to be alone for long periods of time without their humans. They need daily interaction and stimulation. Males are more prone to following their humans from room to room whereas females are happy to play, sleep or do their own thing as long as their humans are close at hand. While humans take years and years to reach maturity, it seems as if dogs are puppies for a blink of the eye and suddenly they are adolescents and causing a ruckus. Of course, sexual maturity varies from one breed to the next and from one individual dog to another. Most breeds reach sexual maturity around 6 to 9 months, which is when most people choose to neuter or spay them. Hormonally, male and female Labradors have distinct differences. Females reach hormonal maturity before males. Studies have shown that such early neutering of male Labs has shown an increase in the number of cases featuring cranial cruciate ligament ruptures and elbow dysplasia. While 6 months is generally an acceptable time to neuter a male Labrador, some vets will advise that owners wait until at least 2 years before doing so. Males do not go into heat but are considered at the very peak of their fertility between 12 and 15 months of age. Due to their hormonal physiology, they can be sexually active all year. A tell-tale sign that your male Labrador is mature sexually is when he starts to mark property and hump furniture and other pets. Many people believe that neutering a male Labrador will calm him down — this is not particularly true. However, neutering a male Labrador can eliminate undesirable behavior such as humping, marking, and roaming. Vasectomies are not carried out on male Labradors, but rather castration. This is because a vasectomy does not stop male hormone production which is what causes the undesirable behavior in dogs. Both testicles are removed through the scrotal sack via a small incision. Most male Labradors will show changes in the following after castration: attraction to female dogs, urinating marking , mounting or humping, roaming, and aggressive behavior. Labrador owners who get a male dog and do not plan to breed him should definitely consider the hormonal benefits of castration. Medically, castration is beneficial to the male Labrador as it is known to reduce the risk of testicular cancer and prostate disease, as well as reduce the chance of the dog developing a perianal tumor or hernia. Females will go into heat at least twice each year. When this happens, you will notice a very obvious change in your dog. Tell-tale signs that a female Labrador is in heat include swollen breasts, thirst, neediness or clinginess, frequent urination, and tail-flagging. Male dogs might also start following the female Lab around. If your male dog is also not neutered, you may want to pay careful attention or you might end up with a litter of puppies in the near future. Females in heat can be a messy business too, so they are not easier to tend to in terms of hormonal changes. There are 4 stages to expect during a heat cycle: Proestrus, Estrus, Diestrus, and Anestrus. The first stage is called Proestrus, which is when the vulva swells and produces a vaginal discharge. This is quite noticeable to dog owners — you might see it on bedding, furniture, flooring and of course, your pet. A female Labrador is the most fertile for 9 to 13 days after the active heat period starts and this period of high fertility typically lasts for around 5 days. Anestrus is the phase of sexual inactivity that lasts between the last active heat period and the next Proestrus period. The Anestrus period usually lasts between and days. If you find that your female Labrador falls pregnant during the Estrus stage, then the Diestrus stage activates and lasts until she births the puppies. Birth usually takes place around 67 days after conception, but can happen a week or so earlier. In terms of hormonal behavior problems, spaying has been considered a viable solution. Many people think that spaying a female Labrador will calm her down — this is not actually true, although it can have some positive effects on the female Labrador. When will a female Labrador stop going into heat? Most dogs experience a decline in ovary activity during their 6th year. This means that most female Labradors can no longer conceive when they are 7 years or older. If a female Labrador is not spayed by this time, most do not worry too much about getting it done. If you are wondering what the difference is between a male and female Labrador and which gender is best suited to your home and lifestyle, it can be difficult to specify. Generally speaking, if you want a dog that is a trusty companion that follows you around, a male Lab is a good choice. If you want a trusty companion that is happy to show a little independence, a female Lab is a good choice. Either way, male and female Labradors are both an excellent choice and most owners do not regret their decision either way. As someone who owns both a male and a female Lab, I can say they are both loving, affectionate dogs that make great family pets. There are a lot of things to consider when choosing a new dog for you and your home. What size dog should you get? What breed? What gender? Is a male or a female dog better for you? There are almost no differences between male and female dogs of the same breed that have been neutered. In dogs that have not been neutered, gender differences are pretty much limited exclusively to sexual behavior. Male dogs of the breed tend to be slightly bigger than female dogs of the same breed. So, if you are hoping for a pooch at the smaller end of the breed spectrum, you may be better off with a girl. Gender is only one of several factors that influence the size of a dog. The best thing you can actually do is look at the size of the parents to predict the size of the pup. Features Because of hormonal differences, male dogs do tend to have rougher, more masculine features than their female counterparts. But if you are looking for a masculine looking version of your preferred dog breed, bear in mind that neutering puppies before maturity may also mean that they never develop these rougher features. Trainability Common wisdom suggests that female puppies mature faster than male puppies, and therefore, they have better attention spans and are easier to train. However, it seems highly likely that this is a human projection, projecting this characteristic that we see in human children onto dogs. Research conducted by Patricia McConnell by speaking to hundreds of dog trainers actually suggests that there is no difference. About half of all the trainers she spoke to suggested that male dogs were easier to train, and the other half female dogs. The one thing that they all agreed on was that it made little difference. Behavior Another study on genetics and the social behavior of dogs found that male dogs were six times more likely to bite than their female counterparts. But the conclusion of this study was not that male dogs were naturally more aggressive than female dogs, but rather that owners treat and train male and female dogs differently, resulting in different behavior. This is another example of human projection, this time causing a difference between male and female pups. What do you imagine is the effect of being called Butch versus being called Cupcake? Not on the dog itself, for whom their name is just a recognizable sound, but on how they are treated by their owners and families. If you are planning on breeding your dog, you need to know whether you want a male or a female. The sexual behavior of non-neutered dogs is also different. Female dogs generally only go into heat twice a year, and it is at this time that they will be searching around for a mate. She will secrete a liquid that is designed to attract a mate and this can also be a pain to clean up if they are indoor dogs, so that is something to consider. Taking them out for walks during this period can also be challenging, as they will attract significant attention from any non-neutered male dogs that are passing. Male dogs that have not been neutered are sexually active throughout the year. This means that they will be those dogs that are sniffing around female dogs out on the street during their heat cycle. They can also have a tendency to mount people and inanimate objects in order to satisfy their need to reproduce. Intact male dogs are also significantly more likely to indulge in marking activities, peeing on everything so that other dogs can scent their territory. Having to deal with the different sexual behaviors of male and female dogs that have not been neutered is certainly a consideration, but once a dog has been neutered, these behaviors pretty much disappear, again rendering the gender difference between dogs negligible. However, it is worth noting that female dogs tend to be a bit more expensive to neuter than male dogs. One of the few significant behavioral differences that has been noted between male and female dogs is that all dogs tend to get on better with dogs of the opposite gender. So, male dogs seem to get on better with female dogs and vice versa. This can be worth considering if you already have a dog at home. Difference Between Intact And Neutered Dogs Neutering is when the sexual organs of a dog are removed, preventing their ability to reproduce, and cutting off the hormones that can cause certain behaviors such as those listed above. In female dogs, the process is called an ovariohysterectomy and involves abdominal surgery to remove the ovaries and uterus. For male dogs, the process involves removing the testes. After being neutered, male dogs are less likely to hump people, other dogs, and inanimate objects, but if they have already picked up this behavior, it can continue. They are also less likely to urinate in order to mark their territory. Both males and females are less likely to display aggression towards other dogs after being neutered, as they do not have the same instinct to compete to reproduce. But training plays a more important role in limiting this behavior than neutering. Both genders also tend to be a little bit lazier and have less energy after they have been neutered, though this is not always the case. It is important that owners keep a closer eye on the diets of neutered dogs, as their appetites increase and they can have a tendency to develop weight problems. While our overall verdict is that gender is a fairly insignificant factor when it comes to choosing a new pup, when you are down to the line and need to choose between a girl and a boy pup, what are the most important things? Existing Family Dogs. One of the few behavioral differences that can be noted between male and female dogs is that both tend to get on better with the opposite gender. So, if you already have a dog at home, it is worth making sure your next pooch is of the opposite gender. Male dogs tend to have rougher features, and female dogs lighter features. If particular features of a breed appeal to you, this can be a factor. But if you choose a male dog, remember that neutering can also affect their look. Mating Behavior. In non-neutered dogs, female heat cycles can be on the messy side, and it may require keeping your femme fatale under house arrest for a few weeks to avoid her getting impregnated. It is a matter of choosing which of these behaviors you find most manageable. Other than this, you may have personal preferences. Perhaps if you are looking at a Maltese, you are keen on a female puppy that you can dress up in cute outfits and spend hours brushing their hair. If you have an eye on a Rottweiler, perhaps you have a male in mind, so that you can give them a spiky collar and call them Butch. They are human cultural constructs that we project onto our animals as we anthropomorphize them as a member of the family. This is down to training and treatment. As you might have thought mostly Labrador Retrievers and Golden Retrievers. In our experience we love both genders and have noticed individually every dog is different. For example Charlie ended up being one of the smallest from his litter and never lifted his leg to mark. The gender of a dog makes relatively little difference to their behavior and temperament. It is then how they are trained and treated that will determine their important personality traits. If you are planning on having your dog neutered, you can pretty much choose any puppy from the litter and it will make little difference. If you plan to keep your new pooch intact, just look out for the different sexual behaviors of female and male dogs. Save to Pinterest Male vs Female Dogs? Which one is better for you? Female Labrador Overview Whether chocolate, black, or yellow, Labradors have a friendly and loving nature that makes them a popular choice for families. Is one better than the other? Is there any significant difference? The differences between a male and female Lab may be minor, but they could have a big influence on your decision. Find out what you should consider when choosing the sex of your Labrador. The breed originated in the UK and was developed from Canadian fishing dogs as a gundog, meaning that it was bred to assist hunters in finding and retrieving game. These medium-to-large dogs are gentle giants with a dense, hard coat that can be a deep black, rich chocolate, or vibrant yellow. One of the best features of the Lab is its eyes, however, which radiate calmness and intelligence. Labs tend to get along with all family members—human and animal alike—and enjoy energetic activities like swimming, fetch, and hunting. Of the few differences in the sexes, males are usually more playful and goofier, more attention-seeking, and more social with people and other pets. Some males may have a higher drive to please their owners. Males tend to be more protective of the family or the territory. Training Labs are easy to train compared to other breeds, but male Labs get distracted easily and may be harder to train than females. Males also need more maintenance and consistency in reinforcing training behaviors. Males may also experience perianal tumors and hernias in old age. Be sure to speak to your vet about the best time to neuter your Lab to reduce the risk of these conditions. At that time, the male may relentlessly seek a female for mating, which may include humping furniture, toys, and people. Intact males may also display sexually-based aggression or marking behaviors to establish and protect their territory. Also, be aware that both male and female dogs can undergo a significant change in temperament after being neutered or spayed. Male Labs The Positives: Fun-loving: Male dogs often see humans, and especially children, as playmates. Less Sensitive: Being less sensitive can sound like a negative, but it comes in handy when training, since you can usually correct them without getting their feelings hurt. Neutering: Interestingly, once a male dog is neutered, most or all of the negative characteristics disappear. Neutering a male is also less invasive and less costly than spaying a female. The Negatives: Wandering: Some male dogs are wanderers. This is more true of intact males, since their sense of smell leads them to seek out females in heat. Aggressive: Male Labs can be outgoing, assertive and demanding of attention in an unintentionally clumsy manner. This seems to be fine for most adult human companions, but could be seen as a negative around children, because a larger male dog can accidentally knock over small children. Thankfully, neutering can greatly reduce this habit. Female Labs The Positives: Gentle: Females often want to be in closer contact with their owner and seek his or her approval. Nurturing: Almost any dog can be a loving companion for a child. Nevertheless, some believe female dogs make a better choice for children because they may be more naturally nurturing and protective of young ones, even if they are from another species. They can also be better in agility and stronger in stamina, making them a great choice for a hunting dog in the upland field. We often find that women or especially gentle, patient men train female dogs more easily. Many owners prefer this, because they want a more compact dog that will fit into cars, offices, or smaller homes. Female Labs also tend to have narrower heads, smaller chests, and longer, slimmer noses. They also tend to be more hostile toward other females at any time, depending on their mood, but especially when they are protecting their pups or competing for food. Some female dogs can be more cranky than males for no apparent reason, but it is usually due to hormonal fluctuations. Touchy: Some females are more physically sensitive and environmentally aware than males. This is especially true of unspayed females during breeding, when they are not ready or willing to be with a mate. They have been known to bite and growl at any male dog that comes near them. Humans should beware during these times, as they can be the brunt of cranky growls and bared teeth. Females can also be very easily angered when they are caring for or guarding their pups. Growls and barks are not uncommon, and some have even been known to bite. Many female dogs cannot withstand loud noises or a raised voice. In some cases, too much of an angry voice in disciplining a female dog can damage her feelings long-term and make her far more difficult to train. When in need of correction, female dogs often require a soft, gentle voice. Impatient dog owners might be tempted to give up and quit training or they indulge their dog too much, giving in to her desires instead of maintaining the fact that they are the trainer and in charge. Consequently, when a female urinates on a lawn, it creates unsightly brown, burned-looking spots. Spaying: Spaying a female also tends to neutralize most negative behaviors, causing her to be less moody, cranky and touchy. It also seems to make her less aggressive which is usually only with other female dogs. However, spaying a female is more invasive and more costly than neutering a male. When it comes to buying a dog, Pete always says to choose the dog that best fits the type of trainer you are. That said, he has some male dogs that are more sensitive, so he has to lighten up with them and be a little more sympathetic. On the other hand, he trains some female dogs that are just as hard-charging and hard-headed as some males. So, that about sums it up. Male and female dogs are different in ways that can be strikingly similar to humans. Bear in mind that there can also be temperamental differences that have nothing to do with gender. One dog may be more independent and not enjoy being pet, where another dog will crumple and roll over on his belly the second you pet him. One dog may be very people-focused; another may be more excited about retrieving and hunting. One dog may be high in energy; another may be more calm and laid back. And feel free to ask us questions. Just like humans, our canine daughters tend to resemble their mothers in appearance; the sons tend to resemble their fathers. Marble Mountain Kennels.

If a Mini Poodle Mix takes after their Mini Poodle parent, they will be a small dog that is affectionate, loving, and playful. Miniature Poodles are intelligent, sensitive dogs with cheerful dispositions. They tend to get along well with children, other pets, and other dogs. They even tend to be good with strangers as long as they have been properly socialized. They do tend to alert you of things, which can make them prone to barking. Working to train your dog to stop barking early on can keep this from becoming a nuisance behavior. If the other parent breed has similar traits, then you can expect a similar temperament from a Miniature Poodle Mix. You can also meet the mother in person to see what temperament she has and the behavior she is modeling for her puppies. The breeder should have started socialization and training. However, it is up to you to continue to train and socialize a puppy once you get them home to ensure they grow into a well-rounded dog. A Miniature Poodle is a highly adaptable dog that does well in apartments as well as larger homes and in most climates. Because they are so people-oriented, they do not like to be left alone for long periods of time. If the other parent breed is similar, then you can also expect a high adaptable Miniature Poodle Mix. The other breed in the mix is likely to have their own quirks, so you do still want to ask the breeder about them. Are mixed-breed dogs healthier than purebred dogs? Just as a mix can inherit none of the conditions common to their parent breeds, they could also inherit some combination of them or all of them. Make sure you ask about the health history of both of the parents. You can also ask about any health tests or clearances that have been done. Miniature Poodles tend to be intelligent dogs that are eager to please and easy to train. They tend to be a good fit for owners of all experience levels. As long as the other parent breed is also a good fit for all experience levels, then you can expect a Mini Poodle Mix to be highly trainable as well. If the other parent breed is more difficult to train, then you will want to prepare for that possibility in a Miniature Poodle Mix. A mixed-breed can inherit a coat similar to one of their parents or a coat that is some combination of them both. If a Miniature Poodle Mix inherits the Poodle coat, it will be low-shedding, require daily brushing, and require professional grooming every weeks. Once or twice monthly nail trims keeps them from growing too long. Weekly ear checks with careful cleanings as needed can help prevent ear infections. Brushing teeth daily or using an enzyme toothpaste every day in addition to cleanings at the vet as needed are ideal dental care for dogs. Although they are small, Miniature Poodles are high-energy dogs that require daily walks plus playtime and extra activity to be happy and healthy. If the other parent breed is also a high-energy breed, then you can expect a Mini Poodle Mix to also be a high-energy dog. If the other parent breed has a lower energy level, a Mini Poodle Mix could take after them, but you still want to be prepared for the potential of a high-energy dog. A Miniature Poodle is usually inches tall and weighs pounds. The other parent breed can have a big effect on this, especially if they are the mother, so you want to ask the breeder about them. Miniature Poodles generally live for years. Although the other parent breed may affect this slightly, you should be able to expect a similar life span in a Mini Poodle Mix. Although, white German shepherds are in existence in Germany today. There are no records because they are forbidden to be registered in that country. Germans also believed that an albino trait that is recessive caused the white color. In canines, albinism is rare. If white German shepherds were albino they would have pink eyes containing no pigment and their skin would not be pigmented as well. In puppies born from parents with both dark pigmented eyes and skin, pigment is always present. Image by Rebecca Scholz from Pixabay Siberian husky. All canines are descendants of wolves from way back in time. Many people compare the Siberian husky to a wolf and although there is a slight similarity, that is where the comparison ends. Huskies are extremely social animals and wolves are just the opposite, living in the wild and steering clear of people. Eye color in huskies can range from light brown to brown, with different shades of blue, green, and even both eyes, each with a different color. Wolves have yellow eyes, which makes for a distinguishing trait. The Siberian husky originated in the portion of eastern Siberia, close to Alaska. These dogs were necessary for the Chukchis, who was an Eskimo tribe, whose survival depended on the huskies transporting supplies to different villages and helping with trail scenting for hunters. The Huskies also lived among families and played with the children. In , a fur trader from Russia brought the first Siberian huskies to Alaska. In , a severe outbreak of diphtheria occurred in Nome, Alaska requiring the serum to be transported to Anchorage. The serum could only be taken part way by train but was carried the rest of the way, miles, in bitter temperatures, by sled dogs. This was called The Great Race of Mercy. Some may take after their husky mother more, others may take after their German shepherd father. There will always be more dominant breed in the genetic makeup and a split is very unlikely. It is said that when a Gerberian Shepsky leans toward the husky genes, he is more loving and gentle. Some owners may find this to be true, but other factors in the upbringing will play their part too. With the right handling and training, they can be extremely calm dogs with a gentle nature. These dogs are energetic and playful and while this can be great for active families with time to spend, it could be a problem for those that cannot deal with the consequences. Bored Gerberian Shepskies are prone to mischievous behaviour and this could get out of control if they feel that they are in charge. With the right training, owners can enjoy this great temperament. There are, however, potential problems to watch out for. A common search term when discussing the problems associated with owning one of these hybrids is that of German shepherd husky cross barking. As far as your dog is concerned, barking can be a good thing because it means that they are acting as a reliable watchdog for the family and reacting to intruders. Vocalisation is an issue with huskies that is passed on in many of these cross breed individuals. Some may be prone to howling when left alone in the house, which can be a problem for the neighbours. Gerberian Shepskys and other animals The other potential issue here is that some of these dogs have a difficult time around other animals. A blend of a protective instinct, predatory genes and an inbred ability to herd means that other household pets and livestock could have a hard time. When handled correctly, the shepherding side of the parentage could be used to great effect if you plan to have a shepsky as a working dog. If they are a family pet, be sure to keep them on a lead near other animals. Because this is a German shepherd mixed with husky, there will be different considerations here. These dogs are known for their intelligence and obedience and this means that they can be keen, quick learners. Many new owners will find that these hybrids have the ability to learn simple tasks without too much need for repetition, and this is believed to be a characteristic that is passed down from the German Shepherd side of the family. It is also noted that these Gerberian Shepskies have a surprising reaction to verbal commands and whistles, but can struggle with toilet training. It is best to avoid negative reinforcement and punishment when training these hybrids because they will not respond well. Instead, work with positive reinforcement and treats so they understand correct behaviour. This works with that playful nature to ensure that training is also a form of playtime. It creates a win-win situation for the pair of you. It is also a good idea to start training your husky German shepherd mix puppy early to be sure of getting a good start and avoid the development of any bad habits. That desire to learn and please is inbuilt so they will be able to pick up new tricks and important behaviour traits from an early age. This can make those issues of socialisation and toilet training much easier to deal with, potentially reducing the risks of accidents and excessive barking in adolescence. Work with regular training sessions at home and consider taking them to a puppy school if you need further advice. This is another great way of dealing with socialisation issues, they can learn how to behave with other animals while learning essential commands. No matter how conscientious you are, accidents can happen. With a collar, you can add your name to its tags or the collar itself, and even use a pet tracker to help with any necessary recovery. Some states also require your dog to have a collar with tags, or you will face a fine if they get out—and these can be steep! If you wish, and your dog sleeps in the house, you can take the collar off at night. Sometimes, variety is the best idea. Typically, your dog will have a collar they wear daily, with their ID tags. However, you may want to opt for a separate collar for walk time, especially if you are battling with leash discipline. Martingale collars can be a great walk-time companion for dogs who are still learning not to pull on the leash. If you hike, swim, or do other activities with your dog, you might want a specific collar that is better suited to the activity and any safety gear you are using. Instead, think about what you and your dog do together, and what will suit them best for different activities. You may even want to swap their daily collar occasionally, either to clean it or simply for some added style and fun. The material that you choose for your collar depends on your budget, as well as the intended activity. All of these choices have their own pros and cons. As a synthetic material, it wears well and dries quickly if wet. However, it will get dirty more easily than some of the other choices, and will likely need to be replaced more frequently than some other material types. You may need a padded version for dogs that struggle with sensitive skin. Neoprene Neoprene is a great choice for doggies who like water. On the flip side, leather lasts for years, can be easily wiped clean, and it wears very slowly. Collars to Never Use on a German Shepherd There are some styles of collars, that are commonly sold for large breed dogs, that should be avoided at almost all costs. Often, these are specialist training tools for highly problematic dogs. They should never be pressed into service just to avoid basic training issues, and they should only be used under the supervision of a vet and a skilled trainer. Designed as a metal chain that tightens when they pull, they are sold as a solution to tugging dogs. These are tools designed for specific, quick corrections, not daily wear or standard walking. Prong Collars and Shock Collars These are both highly aggressive collar styles that all owners should avoid using. They commonly cause injuries and even infections. Because they create fear in the dog, they can amp up aggressive responses and therefore, are a really bad idea for a big breed. These are very serious, end-of-the-line training tools that should only ever be used under the supervision of highly trained specialists, and on true problem dogs that have resisted every other method of training. And even then, they will need to be used for short periods and with quick corrections. These are all nylon shell collars, ideal for walks and daily wear.
