Stage 3: 7 weeks to 12 Weeks After 7 weeks of age, your puppy is old enough to leave their mother and other littermates and go to their new home. Once chilled, a puppy has trouble digesting food, and often develops secondary infections and pneumonia. During this crucial period, they are never left alone. They nurse for short periods and sleep. Mom attends to all bodily functions by licking stimulating them, since their bladders and intestinal tracts are not functioning on their own yet. They are weighed at birth and every day thereafter. Their weights are charted so that we are able to determine everyone is gaining each day. Careful attention is paid to smaller pups to assure they are getting what they need. A primary focus at this stage is the health and happiness of the mother. Selective breeding, love, proper nutrition, and exercise are key ingredients that will help assure that your puppy will be just right for your family. Week Two Puppies have gained between oz. They are moving around more, but are still not able to crawl. They scoot and wiggle about to position themselves for nursing, or pile together if mom is not present. It is time to have nails trimmed for the first time. We are handling them more often- touching feet and gently working and stretching their muscles, and getting them used to the loving human touch. Mom is keeping her pups tidy and clean, and we are keeping the whelping pen and mom the same. Laundry at this point becomes daunting! Mom is wolfing down her high calorie anything and everything her heart desires; cheese, eggs, chicken livers, ice cream, and yummy puppy starter — not to mention treats! Week Three Eyes are beginning to open. All puppies are born with blue eyes. It takes another week before they are able to focus and see clearly. Useable vision is at days. Ears are beginning to open as well; noises startle pups and they are still unable to locate the source of the sound. However, exposure to sudden, loud noises at this time is essential and encouraged, as fear has not yet developed. They are getting stronger and are able to push up onto all fours, but standing is still a scary and very wobbly proposition. This week sees rapid development of motor skills. Puppies are able to move backwards as well as forward, and begin to move around quite a bit more, especially toward the end of week 3. Otherwise, they are problem solving— stimulating their learning ability. They are able to eliminate on their own now, and will be begin to move away from their nest to potty. They are also learning to walk instead of crawl. Week Four Now that the puppies have the use of all their senses, huge strides in development will begin to take place. It is at this crucial point that a breeder, knowledgeable in all aspects of behavioral development, begins increased individual attention. Imprinting is so important; a poorly imprinted puppy will have issues throughout their adult life. Social imprinting, both with other dogs and with humans, is paramount to becoming well adjusted. Handling, cuddling, and picking puppies up is just about the best thing one could wish for- and our friends and neighbors think so too! Early morning coffee with good friends, each with a puppy in their arms, is as good as a day can get. Play-fighting is now the fun thing to do, although mom is watching carefully if they get out of hand. She is also painfully aware that baby teeth are on their way in. Learning to eat solid food is not far behind. This is the time that they graduate from the familiarity of their whelping pen to the puppy room. While we introduce them to their new living space, they all huddle together, usually all in one little bed, looking like a tiny lifeboat filled with wide-eyed survivors in a sea of tile. Soon, curiosity takes over and one or two brave souls will venture out. Within minutes, they are scampering and running and tumbling and skidding into walls and having the times of their lives. Week Five Puppy gruel- one part blenderized dry puppy starter, 2 parts goat milk, and one part warm chicken broth- Yummy! Puppies now have a full set of sharp little teeth. They are learning to lap water but seem to think they need to step in it first. Ditto for the food. This is the Curiosity Period weeks. As the puppies are weaned from their mom, they are less apt to depend on her and begin to climb, crawl, taste, and snoop into everything and anything they can. They have very little sense of fear. Now is when a puppy has the lowest fear and the highest acceptance of all things new or scary. It is also the time to approach the puppy with all different ages and types of humans. Wonderful and varied stimuli are important too, to help them build confidence in new situations. If frightened by something now, the pup will bounce back quickly and will still have learned solid coping skills. As we approach week 6, the puppy is leaping ahead with their motor skills and intellect. It becomes increasingly difficult to present more and more intense challenges and complex stimuli; a basket or pasteboard box has long since lost its thrill. More and more research backs up the conclusion that puppies raised in environments lacking challenges, are more likely to develop into fearful, less successful adults. They have all worked hard navigating steps, up and down. Using the pet door took one whole minute to learn the reward was huge. Authorities agree that by weeks, puppies have fully developed brains, and are capable of learning anything. The one minor caveat is that their attention span is equivalent to that of a 2 year old. However what they learn at this stage is imprinted and permanent. At the end of week 7, all appropriate vaccinations are given, micro chipping, veterinary health checks with Dr. Wolf and Dr. Dragon, and a final review of the health and well-being of the puppy. Puppies are beginning to sleep through the night- if you consider morning to be at 5 AM. They are awake and ready to potty- hurry and get the door open! They all run out with success and no accidents. Life is good. Week Eight Labradoodles and Goldendoodles are old enough and mature enough at 8 weeks to go to their new and permanent homes. At this stage, we feel they are more receptive to individual attention and training objectives such as crate training, housebreaking, and more extensive socialization. Weight-in We continue to weigh the puppies daily and keep a record of their progress Double BirthWeight Milestone Echo had done an amazing job feeding her puppies. All our puppies have been gaining weight daily. Puppies should double their birth weight between 7 — 10 days. The first puppy doubled her birth weight on day 7 and the rest followed over the next few days. All our puppies have doubled their birthweight and continue to grow with each passing day. As you know, the Goldendoodle breed is an intentional mix of Poodle and Golden Retriever. We have a few smaller puppies in this litter. The below picture shows the comparison of our largest puppy and our smallest puppy. At first Echo was constantly in the whelping box and puppies just cycled through taking their turn eating without any intervention on my part. Now that Echo spends time away from her whelping box when she returns, all the puppies want to eat. Their vision will continue to improve over the next weeks. By doing just the right things at just the right time, we can give your puppy the best start possible. These timelines are simply guidelines. Daily cuddles Puppy socialization starts at birth. We handle our puppies as soon as their mamas feel comfortable and give them all daily cuddles. My grandchildren are great helpers with this. I love to share this learning experience with them; teaching them to love and respect animals and to be gentle. And a vet will need to touch a dog all over during a medical examination. So you really need your Labrador to be tolerant of humans touching it all over. A puppy will constantly be bumped, nudged, pawed and climbed all over during its time spent with its litter-mates. This teaches the puppy not to be afraid of touch, to get used to it and be more tolerant. But if a puppy is taken too young it misses out on all this touch and could grow up disliking touch in certain areas of its body. This can result in behavioral issues and even aggression when being touched which for obvious reasons is very undesirable. The things a puppy is socialized to during its first 12 weeks have a profound effect on its level of confidence and levels of fear later in its life. From about 7 weeks onwards, the puppy is very inquisitive and its willingness to approach unknown things and people is at its peak. This period declines at about 12 weeks of age and almost completely ends at 14 weeks where fear begins to creep in as a natural trait essential to survival if it lived in the wild. This is also the time when a Labrador puppy will form their strongest bonds with the humans they spends their time with. Bringing a puppy home at 8 weeks gives you just 4 weeks to do this, bringing one home at 10 weeks gives you only 2! A lack of decent socialization can result in the puppy being fearful of things, places and of human contact. This will put the puppy at greatest ease with the people and places where it will spend its future life. You may wish to bring your puppy home earlier than 8 weeks, but for all the reasons above, you should avoid this entirely. So be very suspicious of the breeder if this is their wish. But this is not a good idea, and can result in a puppy that has poor bite inhibition and is challenging to manage. The puppies are learning not to bite too hard from the reactions of their mother and siblings. Growth is not quite so fast now. But the puppies will still grow strongly for the next few months. Many puppies will be wormed again this week. All that remains is for plenty of great socialization experiences to be packed into this week, with final checks on health. And though some vets advise against it, some puppies are also given their first vaccinations before they leave for their new homes. Remember, no two puppies are the same. That puppy fluffiness will have gone. For many puppies, five months is an awkward, gangly time. A five month old puppy may have shed the last of his soft puppy lines and be looking quite skinny. By the end of this month most puppies will have finished teething but an urge to chew may continue for another few months in some breeds, Labradors included. Some female dogs will have their first season during this month. But, for many, it will be another three or four months before this happens. This is a major milestone for your puppy. He is now looking very much like an adult Labrador. Still a Puppy Because he looks quite grown up, people expect a lot of their 6 month old puppy. But inside, he is still very much a puppy. The beginnings of adolescence and with it an increasing independence of spirit can bring its challenges, but also a whole lot of fun. I argue that picking a puppy has more to do with picking the right litter. The gene pool is exactly the same for every puppy in the litter. Is the puppy aggressive with her littermates? Maybe he is one of the more passive pups. There are all kinds of anecdotal methods to determine whether a puppy is passive or aggressive; happy or scared; outgoing or reserved. I have seen people hold puppies on their backs to see how much they fight against a vulnerable position. If you puppy just lays there and waits for you to release them, you have a passive pup. If the puppy fights against that position, wait and see how long he fights. This will give you a way to gauge his aggressiveness compared to his littermates. Squeeze Test The squeeze test is really simple, and it will help prepare your 7-week-old Lab puppy for training right now. In fact, if you use this right, the squeeze test actually becomes a part of the first training schedule. To do the drill, just pick your puppy up in your arms and wait for his response. At some point, your new Lab puppy is going to start squirming. Your natural response might be to put him down. Instead, give him a gentle squeeze and maintain the slightest pressure. Your Lab might immediately relax and wait for you to release the pressure. Others might fight against the pressure and squirm even more. At some point, even the most insistent and determined Lab pups will stop struggling against your gentle hug. When they stop, you immediately release the pressure. If he starts struggling again, then reapply the gentle pressure until he stops. It should not take too long before your new Lab puppy figures out that if he stops struggling the pressure comes to an end. You are looking for your puppy to wait patiently in your arms for 8-seconds. When he has been still for an 8-count, then you can put him down and let him run away. Pretty quick, your dog will go completely still as soon as you give him a gentle squeeze. When his butt hits the ground, I release the pressure. Start Squeeze Test Training with your Lab Puppy Immediately You should start using the squeeze test every day as soon as you get your little guy or gal home. Some new dog owners might think that this is not really training. Maybe, but the truth is that you are always training your dog. So, from the very beginning your Lab puppy is taking cues on the expectations in his new home. You may wait to start formal training, but your Lab puppy is not going to wait to start building habits. If you wait to start setting expectations which is all training is at any level , then your first lessons will have to address the bad habits your pup has developed in the absence of good training. Tom Dokken suggests that you do this drill with your Retriever puppy at least 20 times a day. Where am I supposed to find time to do this with my puppy 20 times every day? Let everyone participate I remember reading in an old dog training book that you should only be the one that feeds your dog because it builds that relationship between the two of you. The problem is that it can also cause your Lab to ignore everyone else in the family. Well, I am picking up a new puppy today. Odin is a 7-week-old, Yellow Lab puppy, and I am going to show my wife how to do the squeeze test. We are going to start training tonight. Every member of the family is going to take a turn. Then, I am going to ask every member to do the drill 4 times with Odin every day. That means that my brand-new Lab puppy will get 25 to 30 training sessions every day. Odin will also learn that he needs to listen to every member of my family. Socialization The squeeze test is not the only training that I will start tonight. It is not even the most important thing that I will do with my Lab puppy during these early stages at home. I think the most important thing you will do with your new Lab puppy is social training. I watch the dogs every time to see how they react to this new environment because it tells me where I need to start with each. Some dogs bound out of the truck and nearly run me over, and those dogs are the ones that can start training right away. Those dogs, I know from plus years of training experience, will take some extra work. It is not a lack of intelligence or drive or anything else. How do you socialize a Lab puppy? When I talk about socializing a new puppy, I just mean getting him exposed to as many new things as soon as he is ready to experience them. For example, I am going to hold off on shotguns for now. But, the banging of pots and pans and my kids screaming and running around will be a great way to prepare him for that later on. How do I start? Well, when I get Odin home tonight, we will start social training right away by taking him to the park across the street from our house. There are tons of kids there and that is exactly what I am looking for when I want to start social training a Lab pup. Guess what kids want to do when they see a puppy? They want to pet him. I am going to ask if they want to hold him instead. This is going to expose Odin to new people including their smells. The more he experiences different people the more he is going to think this is normal. That is what I want. A dog that is comfortable with lots of new experiences. If your Lab looks forward to new things, introducing new steps in the training process as he develops will be simple and natural. On the other hand, if you wait until he turns 3 or 4 months-old before starting the training process, you could have a huge challenge dealing with a shy, scared Labrador. Working with your puppy, even if you are doing it wrong, is better than not training him at all. At least you are establishing yourself as someone that you puppy can trust and look to for direction. Crate Training If you are still hung up on that old standard that you cannot train your Lab puppy until three or four months, then what about crate training? That starts immediately. Crate training Labrador puppies should start as soon as you get them home. Well, if your dog is ready to start crate training as soon as he comes home, what else can he learn? Crate training is also a good measure of what your training should look like. If you are crate training your puppy correctly, there is no discipline. I even try to avoid displeasure in my voice because I think Labs are super cued into you and your attitude. Instead, I try to put my puppy in situations where they will succeed often enough that it will become habit. So, if my pup has an accident in the crate, then I am going to blame myself. It means that I did not get him out soon enough. Check out this article for the crate training specifics. Get your puppy into a situation where he will succeed and then reward him so that he wants to succeed again in the future. I get that, but there are other things about Labradors that you need to consider. For example, as the bond with your Lab builds, he is going to have a stronger and stronger desire to please you. This is one of the Lab characteristics that makes Labradors so trainable. But, right now, your Lab puppy needs a little extrinsic motivation to follow your commands. This is where treat come in to the training picture. Rest assured that you will not need them forever. Right now, however, treats are an awesome way to introduce some really basic obedience commands that will be critical regardless of what you hope to accomplish with your dog. Obedience Training Obedience training is going to be an important factor in how successful your puppy is at integrating with your family. Every time you go outside, as your puppy gets older, you will rely on the foundation of obedience and expectations that you give your puppy right now. Lots of people get older dogs and teach them to be obedient. They must, however, overcome the bad habits that the dog developed leading up to that point. If you start training your Lab puppy early, you can avoid that tedious, and often frustrating, part of dog training. You need to remember that your puppy is young so go slow—but go! Here are some of the basic commands that you can introduce to your Lab puppy really soon. Save to Pinterest The Stages of Puppy Growth and Development Month by Month The following are the stages of puppy growth and development, starting at birth and ending when your dog reaches adulthood. The Neonatal Stage 0 to 2 weeks This is the newborn puppy growth stage that lasts until two weeks of age. At this developmental stage, puppies are blind and deaf. Expect puppies at this point to sleep almost constantly and their mother will take care of everything, keeping them warm, feeding them, and keeping them clean. The Transitional Stage 2 to 4 weeks At this puppy growth stage , they will start to open up their eyes and respond to sounds, light, and movement around them. You will also notice a puppy at this point starting to get more mobile, although they will still tend to crawl instead of walking. They do, however, have enough strength to stand up, but will stumble a lot. A puppy in this developmental stage will just be starting to recognize their siblings and mother. Lab puppies open their eyes at about two weeks old. By this time, Labrador puppies will have their eyes fully open and most will be at least partly open. Ears open at this point too and your puppy will begin to hear. Period of Awakening of Senses 3 to 4 weeks At this period , a puppy develops various senses rapidly. They start to get fully alert and aware of their environment and may recognize you and other humans that are frequently around. The Socialization Period 4 to 7 Weeks Once a puppy is around four weeks old, they start to learn the most important things in life-related to social development. They will learn to not bite all the time and how to interact with their siblings. Interactions with humans are especially important between five and seven weeks. This is also the time they will start to understand discipline thanks to their mother. She will start weaning her puppies and teaching them manners, like acknowledging she is in charge. As the owner, you can start introducing food to your puppy when they are around four weeks old. Start small and begin to give them more food as the mother continues to wean them. You should also continue handling the puppy every day. However, be sure not to separate them from their siblings or mother for over ten minutes each day, since this can lead to issues with training and socialization. Dogs who are separated too soon may also be nervous and more likely to bark and bite. During this period, let the mother dog take care of discipline; you should not correct the dog for mouthing or housebreaking mistakes until later in life. To help ease them through this process, avoid traumatic events, loud voices, or harsh discipline. You should also make sure your pooch has plenty of human contact during this stage. If you want, you can start leash training and even teach simple commands such as sit, down, stay and come. In terms of development, you will notice that your puppy can sleep through the whole night and starts to develop better control of its bowels and bladder. You can also redirect your dog to a toy that they can bite. Either can end up teaching your pooch that it is okay to fight with you and challenge your authority. The Ranking Period 3 to 6 Months When your puppy is between four and six months old, you should expect them to be somewhat bratty, showing more willfulness and independence. They are more likely to test your limits and may try to show dominance over children or other family members. If they fail to listen to you or come when called, it can be dangerous as it puts them at risk of injury when in public. It can also hurt future responses to you, making them less likely to listen. This is also when your dog will be teething, so give them toys like frozen dog Kong toys to relieve pressure and pain. Chewing behaviors will also start growing at this point so look for some safe chew toys to keep your dog entertained. This is when hormonal changes start to occur and is the ideal time to spay or neuter your pup. Adolescence 6 to 18 Months After six months, your pup is already in the final stage of puppy development but is still young. This is a fun and exciting time for your pooch since they will be learning, full of energy, and exuberant. During this time, it is important to remember that even if your puppy now looks like a grown-up dog, they are still a puppy, at least in its mental capacity and emotional maturity. Work to slowly increase training and other activities. You can even work on advanced training such as agility or herding. Another option is to simply keep training them to ensure they interact in a non-aggressive and non-threatening way with other animals. It is also possible that your dog will go through another fearful period of time at some point after they reach six months. You can speed up the process with counter-conditioning and desensitization. It fits very well and is quite apt! Final Thoughts With the knowledge of how and when your new puppy will develop, you are better able to meet their needs. Provide socialization at the appropriate times and be sure to give your puppy plenty of social interactions with their siblings as well as humans and any other pets in your home. A Proactive Preventive Approach Given the results of this study showing the increased incidence of CCL rupture and urinary incontinence in German Shepherd Dogs that had early spay-neuter surgeries, breeders should consider the pros and cons before deciding the best age to recommend that puppy buyers spay or neuter their dogs. The purpose of a dog also should be considered in determining what is best for a companion dog, a working police dog, or a show or sporting competitor could be different. A German Shepherd Dog that is neutered or spayed before 1 year of age and has a CCL rupture could be out of commission for months for surgery and rehabilitation. Urinary incontinence is an inconvenient disorder for owners to deal with because it requires frequent cleaning of urine from floors and bedding. It also is attributed to dogs being relinquished to shelters. The most important finding in German Shepherd Dogs is that there is no advantage of neutering or spaying before 12 months of age. Joint disorders, a concern in German shepherd dogs, might be less likely to occur if spaying or neutering procedures are delayed until the dog is at least one year old, this study suggests. But as most handlers, breeders and veterinarians are aware, joint disorders are a big concern in these animals. A new study in the journal Veterinary Medicine and Science finds that neutering or spaying these dogs before 1 year of age triples the risk of one or more joint disorders — particularly for cranial cruciate ligament, or CCL, tears.
