Email In , the French bulldog, commonly known as a Frenchie, became the most popular dog breed in America , dethroning the lowly Labrador retriever for the first time in 31 years. At around 20 pounds and perfectly sized for carry-on luggage, Frenchies have been marketed as the dog best suited to the lifestyles of the rich and quite possibly lazy. In , they were the most popular pup in New York, Los Angeles, and San Francisco and in the top five in many other cities. The Frenchie is the most hashtagged dog on Instagram. There are also the breathing issues common to all brachycephalic breeds — those with flat faces — that can cause respiratory distress, heat intolerance since the dogs have to pant to cool themselves off , and frequent vomiting. Later in life, Frenchies can show signs of more serious issues like painful spine deformations and nerve pain. Frenchies make it easy for owners to project themselves onto their dogs without having to listen to what the dogs are actually saying. Rather than buying a puppy, she spent years contacting rescues before she adopted her first one, Wu, followed by Donut a year later. She fell in love with the breed, and when Pongo died, she got two more Dalmatians — a male and a female — who went on to produce a giant litter of 15 puppies. When a live-action remake of the movie came out in , their popularity surged again. This time, though, the press began reporting on a perhaps predictable consequence: Dalmatians were winding up in shelters in higher-than-usual numbers. Travel-size mini-Aussies, with their colorful coats and tendency toward eye colors more often found in humans, also had a moment. And untold curly-haired hybrid doodles have become popular thanks to their hypoallergenic fur. On Instagram, the most popular dog breeds currently are Frenchies, pugs, and bulldogs, which, in turn, only make them more popular. Their flat faces scream cute while the high prices for a puppy make them as aspirational as multi-step skin care routines, Le Creuset kitchenware, and living in a remodeled van. Dogs were bred for purpose, not aesthetics. A foxhound in one part of the country was taller or shorter depending on the style of hunting. Retrievers were any dog a hunter trained to retrieve game without biting it. Greyhounds looked different depending on whether their intended racing course was located on flat or hilly ground. The change from purpose to aesthetics came about with the beginning of dog shows in the mids. Judging animals based on how well they did a certain task, like retrieving a bird their owner hunted, was hard; judging whether they were the right color, height, shape … well, that could be done quickly and seemingly more fairly. So, by definition, all purebred dogs are inbred, related to each other in one way or another. The development of purebreds made it easier to show dogs and sell them. More than ever, their worth was tied to their genetics. Throughout the 20th century, however, Americans got better at mass-producing everything — cars, clothing, meat — and purebred dogs became another mass-produced consumer item newly available to the middle class. Tellingly, none of the features humans seek are particularly beneficial for the animals. We expect the latest iPhone or laptop to operate smoothly and improve battery life with every generation but keep breeding dogs with more likelihood of disease, disability, and early death. On average , the life span of purebred dogs is shorter than that of mixed breeds. But so far, no one has found a way to make thousands of dollars from a genuinely mixed-breed puppy. That left two guide-dog puppies without homes. At the time, Labrador guide dog puppies had a three- to six-month waiting list but nobody wanted these mixes, creator Conron said in a interview. After that, Bernstein says, people realized that if you could breed dogs to be hypoallergenic, you could also breed for big eyes or long ears, or a spotted Frenchie, or a dog so small it could be photographed sitting comfortably inside a teacup. For some, that might mean owning an Instagram-friendly Frenchie or Pomeranian. For others, it might be rescue dogs that have become trendy for the same virtue-signaling reasons that people proudly drive electric cars or shop at the farmers market. But even as the AdoptDontShop movement gains traction, more people still buy dogs than adopt them, and every year , shelter dogs are euthanized rather than finding homes. But it can be for dogs that are bred to fill a fad. What kind is it? It takes a lot of time to get to know a dog, and we have to choose based on first impressions. One study found that among 31 owners of dogs with brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome BOAS , 18 reported their dogs had no breathing problems at all. Kipperman knows that these dogs, despite their health problems, are beloved by their owners. He had a pug named Winston for 13 years who has since died. I understand what great companions they are. Puppy-selling websites such as PuppySpot. When breeders are located outside of the United States, as is often the case for Frenchies and other trendy breeds, treatment can be even worse for the puppies. Last year, a plane from Ukraine arrived in Toronto carrying French bulldog puppies. After the hour flight, the young dogs were weak and dehydrated. Some were vomiting. By the time the plane landed, 38 had died. Dogs entering the US for resale are supposed to be 4 months old and have certain vaccinations, but dogs often arrive much younger than that, and veterinary paperwork is often falsified. In her rescue work, Bernstein has encountered multiple businesses in the US that import dogs while claiming to breed them locally. This is what it takes to fill that instant demand. When asked about the future of the Frenchie, both Bernstein and Kipperman had grim predictions. Today, the average life span of an English bulldog is now only about six years. Sixty percent of golden retrievers now die from cancer , though the rate was comparable to other breeds only a few decades ago. Dogs that are overly fluffy or have cosmetic alterations like cropped ears or docked tails may have trouble communicating with other dogs. For some dogs, the circumstances of their birth and genetics are profoundly damaging. Frenchies are marketed as easy, friendly dogs that can adapt to anything and need minimal exercise. Bernstein calls this ironic. But is it fair to our dogs that being a good owner so often consists of fixing the problems we as consumers created in the first place? We buy pet clothes and toys and grieve deeply when the dogs, with their shortened lives, inevitably leave us. Tove K. Danovich is a writer based in Portland, Oregon. Update, March 16, , am ET: This story was originally published in December and has been updated to reflect that the Frenchie is now the most popular dog breed. Unfortunately, many people make the mistake of not doing enough research and unknowingly adopting a puppy from a puppy mill or a backyard breeder. Although their prices may be much lower, their puppies often come with severe health and behavioral problems. A good breeder will also offer a health guarantee so that you can be refunded or given a replacement puppy if your dog develops any genetic health conditions in the first year or two. This is a good indication that the breeder is professional and takes their work seriously. A dull fur Ear infections If your dog is experiencing any of the said problems, you will do well to take them to a veterinarian at the earliest opportunity for a diagnosis as well as treatment. Eating Too Fast The bulldog is unique in many ways, but none is as obvious as the shape of its nose. The breed is a brachycephalic, which means that their nose appears to be compressed from the back to the front. The upshot of this structure is that it can cause a lot of problems with ingesting food. Owing to the shape of their nose, bulldogs need to eat slowly. If they eat too fast, they will inhale air together with their food, and this causes them to either vomit or regurgitate. But what is the difference between vomiting and regurgitating you ask? In this case, the food comes straight out of the esophagus and is often coated with a lot of saliva and mucus. It is also caused by inhaling a lot of air due to eating too rapidly. Vomiting on the other hand refers to the expulsion of food that has already been digested from the stomach. It is often preceded by movement of abdominal muscles and you can actually see the dog making retching movements before it empties the contents of its stomach. If your pet ingests food too fast, this can also lead to vomiting. To slow down eating, there are a couple of things you can try. First, make sure your bulldog is eating alone. They will often eat too quickly and make themselves sick if they feel like they have to compete for their food. Even being around small children can make them eat too fast, so give them some privacy at meal times. You can also try putting a tennis ball in their dish. This will force them to slowly work around the ball while they eat. It may confuse them at first, but keep working with it if you pup has a bad habit of eating too quickly. Ingesting Foreign Substances Puppies are known for their mischievous nature, and this can often lead to unwanted consequences. If they eat food they are not supposed to, say food that is meant for human consumption, they will most likely throw up. Additionally, eating things such as teddy bear stuffing will rub their stomachs the wrong way and this will certainly cause vomiting. Only offer your dog food formulated for bulldogs and toys that were made to be safe for dogs. Bulldogs may eat grass to help them vomit. But there may be other reasons too. Find out why and how to help here if your bulldog is eating grass. See also What is the Worlds Largest Pug? This can often be caused by sleeping on an empty stomach, and the vomit usually consists of nothing but yellowish bile. It can be easily taken care of by giving them a snack before their bed time. Exercising Too Soon After Eating I cannot stress enough just how sensitive the stomach of a bulldog is. It can be upset by even the most unexpected of things, such as playing too soon after eating. If your dog throws up a few minutes after eating, then it could be because you engage them in physically demanding activities too soon. If this is a common problem for your bulldog, let your bulldog take it easy for about 20 minutes before starting new activities. Increase the time if your bulldog continues to throw up. How to Treat Constant Bulldog Vomiting It only makes sense to treat vomiting by identifying its cause in the first place. Some measures you can take to prevent future vomiting include: Make Your Dog Eat Slow If your dog is vomiting because they eat too fast, then they will certainly benefit from a more relaxed eating pace. What can you do to make this possible? First, feed your dog on a regular basis. This will ensure that they are not always hungry, and thus they will not gulp down food and water the instant they see it. Additionally, you can purchase a non-edible block that slows down their eating pace. Placing the block in their eating bowl means that they will have to work around it to get to their food, and this makes them eat much slower, such as the tennis ball mentioned above. It is best to introduce a new diet slowly, especially if you are shifting from puppy food to adult food. You should also monitor changes in their diet very carefully so that you can spot any allergies early on. This will save your dog a lot of trouble in the long run. Withhold All Food If you suspect that your dog is vomiting due to a stomach infection, you will do well to withhold all food from them for a period of not more than 24 hours. When there is nothing to expel, your dog will experience some relief. Be sure to provide them with water, although in small amounts. For instance, you can give them a block of ice to lick on to ensure that they stay hydrated. Alternatively, take them off of all foods and only feed them boiled rice. Bulldogs tend to hold rice down well and they can be a huge relief before the vomiting passes. Take your Dog to the Vet Where the dog has more symptoms besides vomiting, it is imperative that you take them to the vet immediately. Sometimes, vomiting is the precursor to other conditions, some of which can be potentially life threatening. Bleeding, diarrhea, scratching, and other infections are some of the signs that you need to watch out for. If your dog also portrays signs of confusion, extreme dehydration, or uncontrollable panting, take them to the vet as soon as you possibly can. Conclusion Now that you know the different reasons why your bulldog might be vomiting frequently, all that is left is for you to take the correct measures to stop it. If they are eating too fast, feed them frequently, in a calm environment. If it is about drastic food changes, be more gradual about them. If it is because they sleep on an empty stomach, give them a bedtime snack. And if you think that something worse is eating at them, rush them to the vet at the first opportunity. Taking care of your bulldog is essential to a long, healthy, happy life! We also took the time to talk specifically about why French bulldogs throw up if you happen to have a Frenchie. Post Views: 1, Puppy vomit is common. This is because dogs have a well-developed vomiting center in their brains, which allows them to throw up much easier than many other animals. While most of the time harmless, puppy vomit can, however, be a sign of serious and even life-threatening illness. So, it pays to understand the full range of causes and implications. A: Yes, it is normal for puppies to vomit. Puppy vomit however can also be a sign of serious and even life-threatening illness. Q: A: Yes, it is not uncommon for puppies to vomit often. Puppies are subject to a range of condition and experiences that trigger vomiting such as eating too much, too often, eating foreign objects or intolerance to human foods, consuming toxic or poisonous substances, or as a reaction to conditions of stress or anxiety. How often is too often? Multiple episodes of vomiting on the same day or on subsequent days, vomiting accompanied by diarrhea, or acting sick or lethargic or appearing to be in pain are indications that it is time to call your vet. Q: Why is my puppy vomiting yellow? If your dog is throwing up bile with any frequency, you should have them checked out by a vet right away. Bile is a sign of a number of conditions that affect the digestive system, including inflammatory disease, ulcers, parasite infections, and certain cancers. In each of these cases, the underlying condition needs to be diagnosed and treated by a veterinarian to relieve the vomiting. Q: Why is my puppy vomiting white foam? A: Your puppy could be vomiting white foam for several reasons. The most common reason is that the puppy has eaten something that has irritated the stomach, such as grass and plant material. There are other more serious reasons a puppy vomits white foam, including obstruction of the stomach or intestines, toxin exposure, pancreatitis, and acid reflux. Coughing up white foam from kennel cough can often be mistaken for vomiting. If your puppy vomits white foam and acts sick in any way, call your vet for advice. Q: Why is my puppy vomiting after eating? A: There are several reason why your puppy might be vomiting right after eating. Overly-enthusiastic eaters, stressed puppies, or puppies who must compete with other dogs for food often eat too fast or too much food which can come right back up again. Try different solutions such as serving smaller meals more often throughout the day, placing food bowls in areas where there is less traffic or excitement, utilizing tools to slow down eating such as commercially-available slow feeder bowls, and where there is more than one dog in the house, feeding puppies in separate spaces can all help. If the condition is not environmental or conditional but rather physical such as regurgitation, consult with your veterinarian for an appropriate solution. While vomiting is not a specific disease or a diagnosis in and of itself, it is a clinical sign that can occur with many diseases or conditions. Generally speaking, occasional bouts of puppy vomit are not uncommon. If your puppy vomits once in a blue moon then it is likely no cause for concern. However, a puppy throwing up becomes more significant when: The vomiting does not stop There is blood in the vomit There is nothing left in the stomach to throw up except mucus and bile the yellow fluid Age matters, too. In puppies 6 months old or less, vomiting is also a more serious condition than in older dogs because of their smaller size, immature immune systems and tendency to become easily weak and dehydrated. While puppy vomit may have a simple, straightforward cause such as eating too much food too fast, stressful situations and gastrointestinal upset from eating foreign objects , it may be an indicator of something far more serious. Vomiting in puppies can have a wide range of causes, and determining the correct one may be quite complicated. For example, one of the more common and serious infectious causes of puppy vomit is parvovirus infection. Parvo is a viral infection that, if left untreated, is potentially fatal in puppies. Some symptoms that the puppy vomit is becoming more serious are: Frequent vomiting occurs more than once a day or on consecutive days Projectile vomiting when body expels vomit with more force than usual Appearing to be in pain or discomfort Acting tired or weak Bright blood present in vomit Dark blood present in stool looks like coffee grounds Vomiting in combination with diarrhea Visible abdominal bloating What are the causes of vomiting? The list is long and includes: Eating something that causes inflammation, obstruction or infection in the gut Abrupt change from regular dog food to something new Gobbling food or eating food too fast Intolerance to some human foods Reaction to stressful situations or condition of anxiety Acute bacterial or viral inflammation of the stomach or intestines Intestinal parasites e. Your veterinarian will utilize several tools to diagnose the problem, including a history from you what has been going on , a physical examination of your puppy, laboratory or imaging studies like x-ray or ultrasound or response to therapy. To help your vet make the diagnosis, bring a sample of the vomit to the clinic, because how the vomit looks can tell the vet a lot. A puppy throwing up food that is undigested can be due to food poisoning, anxiety, eating too fast or simply overeating. If bright red blood is found, the stomach could be ulcerated; if the blood is brown and looks like coffee grounds, the problem may be in the intestines. Strong digestive odors are usually observed when there is an intestinal obstruction. If it turns out to be no more than a passing incident, your veterinarian may ask you to limit the diet to clear fluids and to collect stool samples over that period as the underlying cause may be passed along in the stool. Vomit color or appearance. However, they often suffer from the problem of vomiting or throwing up. English bulldogs are susceptible to throwing up and nausea for two reasons. Bulldogs also have an elongated pallet that makes breathing more difficult which can lead to ingesting excess air when they eat. Do you have an English bulldog that throws up often? Are English bulldogs more likely to throw up compared to other breeds? The shape of their noses makes English bulldogs quite unique. They are a brachycephalic breed, i. This nose structure is also responsible for causing some troubles in ingesting food. These are two reasons why English bulldogs are more susceptible to nausea and throwing up, and make them throw up more often than other breeds. What causes English bulldogs to throw up? Apart from the shape of their nose, there are several other factors that make bulldogs throw up. Below are some of the chief reasons that are responsible for frequent vomiting. Stomach problems The most common reason that English bulldogs throw up frequently is their sensitive stomachs. They can easily suffer from gastronomical problems and bloating, which in turn leads to vomiting. Several other food problems or allergies, and consuming rotten or infected food, not only lead to severe infections in bulldogs but also makes them throw up. Sudden diet changes further result in a bloated stomach, thereby making your little four-legged friend go into a vomiting spree or even diarrhea. To identify whether your pup is suffering from some kind of stomach problem, look for signs like watery eyes, bloody nails, dull fur, itchiness, or ear infections. Next, get the problem diagnosed and treated immediately by taking the pup to a vet. Eating too fast makes them inhale air along with the food, leading to vomiting or regurgitating. The food that comes out in regurgitating is mostly covered in lots of saliva and mucus. On the other hand, vomiting expels already digested food right from the stomach. Drinking water too fast or having unwanted moisture in the system also makes them vomit. If the eating speed is not reduced, vomiting can become a regular ritual in bulldogs. English bulldogs may sometimes eat some random stuff around the house. Many pets often ingest the padding and stuffing from chewing apart stuffed soft toys, which can lead to vomiting. Sleeping on an empty stomach is the cause of throwing up, and the vomit in such cases usually consists of yellowish bile. Your pet will show specific symptoms like lip smacking, or behaving very sensitive to a basic touch on the abdomen, or eating dirt. Usually sleeping on an empty stomach leads to over-stimulation of the spleen and pancreas, thereby leading to indigestion, burning sensation in the stomach, burping, and eventually, vomiting. You can prevent this by offering them a bedtime snack. Indulging in physical activity too soon after eating The super sensitive stomach of your bulldog can get upset by things as little as playing too soon after eating. Allow your bulldog to relax for at least 20 minutes after a meal, before doing anything physically arduous or energetic. Inflammation in the gut Sometimes dogs vomit due to inflammation in their gut. This is an indication of a depleted microbiome, where they suffer from food sensitivity and trouble in the intestines. In that condition, vomiting occurs several times over a hour period because of the gastrointestinal inflammation. You can easily identify the problem very soon as the vomit will usually be brown or yellow in color while being semi-transparent and watery. However, some bulldogs remain vulnerable to vomiting when traveling, even after their ears mature. Make them eat in a calm environment Making your dog eat in a calm environment will help them slow down eating. The more slowly they eat their food, the more likely you can prevent sickness or regurgitation. Putting a ball in their dish works wonders to make them eat slowly by engaging their mind as well as making them work around the toy while eating. Instead, go for a gradual change, especially when turning to adult food from puppy meals. Avoid feeding for some time if your bulldog has a stomach infection If your English bulldog vomits due to a stomach problem, contact a vet. They may recommend withholding food from them for a few hours, but not more than a day. To keep them hydrated, you can also offer an ice cube to lick to allow a soothing action for their digestive tract. How to prevent motion sickness You can always prevent your pup from throwing up by using a specially crafted dog seat belt. About half an hour before you head for the trip, give some powdered ginger to the pup that will calm their gut. Probiotic treatment for gut inflammation When your bulldog suffers from inflammation in the gut and a nervous stomach, go for probiotic treatments that are easy to create at home. Plain, unsweetened yogurt is a simple probiotic that you can give to your dog. Some catnip can also help as it will calm your puppy as it balances their nervous system. Or simply infuse a little catnip with a cup of lukewarm water, giving the solution to your dog at least twice a day. Treating vomiting caused by an empty stomach As mentioned above, feeding them a light snack or some food before sleeping usually helps prevent them from throwing up in the morning. Once you are aware of the different reasons for why your bulldog may be vomiting or throwing up frequently, all it takes is just a little extra care and some precautions to address this problem. However, if you have taken these measures and still see that the problem persists, you know what must be done: take your pet to your veterinarian immediately, seeking professional medical assistance for your bulldog. Exercising on a full stomach. If unmonitored, continuous vomiting can become harmful. Because English bulldogs are a brachycephalic breed, short nose and flat face, this physical attribute can be life threatening. They are known to vomit anything from foam to water to their whole meal. Sensitive Stomach Bulldogs have an extremely sensitive stomach. They are also predisposed to certain genetic diseases and allergies. Some specific foods can cause indigestion and flatulence. Bulldogs eat very quickly too and will eat just about anything. Their delicate bellies make them susceptible to several gastronomical problems and bloat, often leading to vomiting. Vomiting that occurs irregularly over a longer period of time can also be due to severe constipation, kidney dysfunction, liver disease or systemic illness. Eating too Quickly English bulldogs have a smushed up and muzzled face, and their noses appear to be compressed from the back to the front. Their elongated palate is also not fully formed. All this is enough to cause problems in them while ingesting food. Because of their constricted nasal pathways, English bulldogs should eat slowly. When they eat too fast, they inhale a lot of air together along with their food, and this causes them to vomit or regurgitate later. Eating Foreign Substances English bulldogs are known for their voracious eating habits. Their gluttonous eating behavior can go against them in the long run. The smell of rotten food may not necessarily put them off or prevent them from eating them. Eating spoiled food can also cause food poisoning and gastritis in your English bulldog, which may lead to vomiting. An Empty Stomach Your English bulldog may vomit in the morning, sometimes on an empty stomach. The vomit would mainly consist of the yellowish bile. This condition is called bilious vomiting syndrome. Your dog can vomit bile and foam only early morning and would otherwise be okay throughout the day. Dogs with bilious vomiting syndrome do not show any other symptoms such as weight loss, diarrhea, or reduced appetite. Physical Activity Soon after Eating English bulldogs have super sensitive stomachs, and there are a lot of unexpected things that can upset their tummies. If your dog vomits a few minutes after eating, you may be engaging him in physical activities too soon. Making your dog exercise immediately after and even before a meal can cause his stomach to blow up like a balloon. English bulldogs have food sensitivities that can lead to stomach upsets. You may be giving the right food, but their squishy faces and puppy eyes can easily tempt even the strongest willed owner to share some table scraps. Beyond allergies, table food can be harder to digest. Relaxed and Slow Eating If your English bulldog continues to eat his food very fast, it can lead to throwing up. So what can you do to make your English bulldog eat slowly? First, have your bulldog eat alone and not around any other pet or even small children. Bulldogs may see others as a threat to their food, making them eat rapidly. So you should give them privacy while they are eating their food. Feed your English bulldog multiple small meals during the day rather than two or three large meals. This will ensure that your dog is not always hungry and will not devour food the moment he sees it. Find Out Now! It is recommended to introduce a new diet slowly, especially if you are switching from puppy food to adult food. Also, keep an eye on your dog to spot any allergies early on. It is HIGHLY recommended to buy grain-free and soy-free foods as they are reported to improve digestion and boast of other health benefits. If your English bulldog is sensitive to certain ingredients present in the commercial pet food, then try giving him a home-prepared diet. Keep away all Unwanted Substances Bulldog pups are known for their mischievous nature and often ingest foreign substances that can rub their tummies the wrong way, making them vomit later. Only offer toys or treats to your pet that are specifically made for dogs. Eliminate their access to anything inedible. Cover your compost bins, keep your clothes away, and do not leave your rubbish lying around. Bilious Vomiting Syndrome If your dog is prone to bilious syndrome, then it is a good idea to offer a small meal just before bedtime. Also, feed them early in the morning. You can even get an automatic feeder, as that would be a worthwhile investment. But if this does not improve matters, then a health workup may be required consisting of blood work, a fecal examination, urinalysis, abdominal X-rays to make sure your bulldog is genuinely healthy. Refrain Exercising your Dog after Meals If your English bulldog throws up immediately after eating, especially if you indulge it in physically demanding activities, then stop doing that. Exercising on a full tummy can upset the stomach or lead to bloating or twisting stomach. Wait for at least an hour or more before or after exercising. Diet after Vomit If your dog has thrown up a few times, withhold food for at least 24 hours. This allows the digestive system some time to rest. Give your English bulldog small amounts of water only every hour or so. When going back on food, give your dog a simple diet of boiled rice, chicken breast, or lean meat. Routine Vet Visits Never self-medicate your English bulldog as this can cause harm. If your dog throws up multiple times in a day or two days in a row accompanied by other symptoms like loss of appetite, blood in their vomit or stool, then they will require prompt attention from a veterinarian. If your bulldog happens to have diarrhea, the reasons and treatment may be different than vomiting. Read our tips for treating diarrhea in bulldogs. Vomiting English Bulldog Conclusion How can you tell if vomiting is dangerous for your English bulldog? Vomiting in bulldogs is mainly associated with gastritis, which causes the inflammation of the stomach lining. If your bulldog suffers from acute gastritis, he can throw up two to three times for one or two days and does not require any vet visit. Acute gastritis is usually caused by the ingestion of spoiled food, bones, plants, fungi, toys, garbage, and other unwanted items. But if your English bulldog continues to vomit for more than two days, then taking him to a vet would be in the best interest of your dog. Any signs of foreign material, in their vomit, needs an immediate visit to the vet. English bulldogs have delicate bellies and bodies as compared to other dog breeds and require extra care. Bulldogs have congenital breathing problems due to narrowed nostrils and elongated soft palates. This difficulty in breathing can also cause other symptoms like retching and vomiting. Therefore, it is imperative to feed your bulldog a well balanced diet. They are prone to sporadic vomiting of either food or water or both. This can be easily confused with regurgitation. It is your responsibility as a bulldog parent to show your love, not only with affection but by monitoring its health, planning daily exercise, and only give it the best dog food. Post Views: .Your French bulldog may not want to lie down Unusual movements Pain in the neck or throat Esophagitis will usually mean a trip to the vet for your Frenchie and the condition can usually be managed with medicine or a change in diet. A high in carbs and low fat diet that contains low protein foods with no allergens in them can help heal the oesophagus. Antacids may be prescribed along with other drugs to help your French bulldog swallow. In extreme cases a balloon catheter can be installed to help manage the narrowing of the oesophagus. This condition is often hereditary and diagnosed by barium swallows and x-rays, so again this will mean another trip to the vet for your four-legged friend. Unfortunately, there is no cure for this problem and will have to be managed over the life of your Frenchie. Managing it is not particularly easy. It requires your dog to be in a vertical and upright position whilst feeding and drinking. Hiatal hernia A hiatal hernia is usually detected when your dog is exercising or particularly excited. This causes an opening in the diaphragm called the oesophageal hiatus which the oesophagus passed through prior to entering the stomach. A hernia can sometimes develop in this location due to an issue caused by one of the below: A protrusion of the oesophagus Lower oesophageal sphincter Part of the stomach A hiatal hernia will mean a trip to the vet again for your French bulldog and quite possibly some surgery. Anti-inflammatory drugs can also be used to help reduce inflammation inside the oesophagus. However medication will only reduce the frequency and severity of the hiatal hernia but will not remove it totally. Surgery may be needed to put the oesophagus and stomach back to what is considered the normal position. Indigestion and stomach upset Your English Bulldog could be throwing up white foam just because they have an upset tummy. The most common reason is gastroenteritis where they have an empty stomach and then puke up a white foam vomit. This condition is also known as bilious vomiting syndrome. The bile produced can not only be white but also have a yellow color. It might be that they ate something their stomach disagrees with such as grass. Kennel cough One of the more common reasons English Bulldog throw up white foam will be kennel cough. Kennel cough can be contracted when your English Bulldog has been exposed to other dogs, usually in kennels as the name suggests. It is an upper respiratory infection that your vet can treat, typically being treated in a week to 10 days. Bloat Bloat gastric dilatation-volvulus is one of the most serious reasons for English Bulldogs puking up white foam and slime. They can become sick very quickly and will need to be seen by a vet quickly. It occurs when their stomach becomes twisted after expanding. The stomach can expand when filled with food, fluid, or gas which then puts pressure on their internal organs. Some vets recommend you wait a good 30 minutes after their meal, even with light walks. Pancreatitis Another serious health condition that results in your English Bulldog throwing up white foam is pancreatitis. This is an inflammation of the pancreas, which is an organ that aids digestion of food. Your vet will need to diagnose this condition, but other signs to look out for include your English Bulldog hunching his back up, being in obvious pain around their abdomen, having diarrhoea, not eating properly, being listless, and becoming dehydrated due to not drinking enough. We have had Clementine Callie for four months now, and she is a wonderful dog. Her personality is amazing, and I think part of it is breeding and the other part is Erika and her family lovingly raising the puppies in their home with plenty of attention and snuggles. I also was impressed that, rather than send the puppies out right at 8 weeks, Erika kept ours for a few extra weeks because she was tiny and not read to leave her mom yet. It's that care that differentiates Bruisers from other breeders. Emily R. Erica was easy to work with thru the entire process from application to adopting and now beyond as we host our new family member, Chief. Her on-call support and willingness to provide open, honest advice to all of our questions and concerns continues to be appreciated. We've had Penny formerly Blair for two months and she is very healthy, energetic, playful, and sweet. She is great with other people and dogs. We are so happy with our pup. When we are ready for bulldog 2, we will only consider Bruiser Bulldogs. Mitch C. Bowser was born April and is an integral part of our family. When we were first exploring English Bulldog breeders our biggest concern was the overall health of the dogs. We decided to work with Erica at Bruiser Bulldogs because we liked their focus on improving the breeds breathing abilities and the fact that the puppies are raised within her family environment before coming home with their new owners. Bowser also breaths clearly and our vet was impressed with his overall health from the moment we brought him home. All that said we know English Bulldogs have a predisposition to many health issues and that his current health can not predict the future. With that In mind its important to start with a breeder that open to answer any of your questions as Erica has ours, and that strongly believes in improving the breeds overall health profile. Adam B. My sister ended up finding Bruiser Bulldogs and we knew right away that they were the breeder for us. In September we ended up driving 9 hours to pick up two Bruiser bulldog puppies- one for my husband and I and one for my mom. Jackson and Penelope have been nothing but a joy. They are both very athletic and healthy. They are also HUGE snugglers and always want to be with you. It is an absolute pleasure having these two bullies in our lives! Erica is very knowledgeable about the breed. She is very hands on throughout the process and is just overall a kind and honest person to work with. With all that being said I cannot recommend Bruiser Bulldogs enough! Collyn C. One of the reasons we chose Bruiser Bulldogs was due to the claims about breeding for health. During our first visit at our vet's office, he told us that our pup was one of the healthiest English bulldogs he had ever seen. He is healthy, happy and social. Would recommend to anyone. Christina S. We seen our dog on their website and sent them an Email. Mitch called us and personally walked us through the process and made sure we had the right dog for our family. We couldn't be happier when we picked up our dog Ramsey, Erica made sure we had everything we needed and then some. They are truly amazing people who breed truly amazing dogs! Jim T. However, some adult German Shepherds will have floppy ears. There are several causes for this. There is also a genetic trait in some German Shepherds to have floppy ears. When one or both of the parents has floppy ears, there is a strong chance that the offspring will inherit this trait. If this is the case with your dog, there is not much you can do about his floppy ears. Rough play. GSD puppies play rough , and a lot of times, this can affect their ears through nips and bites. Cartilage is not like the skin because it is not highly vascularized. You can support the healing times by offering him a healthy, balanced diet. You may even consider food specially formulated for German Shepherds. Ear infections. Because they have such dense fur, German Shepherds are highly susceptible to ear infections. The coat interferes with the air circulation of the ear canals, setting up the perfect circumstances for infections and mites. Signs of these problems include shaking the head and pawing the ears. The ears may go up for a bit during the teething process and then return to the floppy position. After more time passes, the ears should return to the upward position again. However, even after nine months, there are several methods that you can try that will assist in training his ears to stand. When your puppy reaches eight months old and still has floppy ears, you can try giving him chew toys to work out his jaw muscles. Chewing on toys will work his temporalis muscle, which is one of the muscles involved in supporting upright ears. Ear taping can be done at home, while surgical implants will need to be administered by a veterinarian in a sterile environment. The ear may be set in its position at this stage, and the procedure may not have much effect. Discard the hard plastic clip from the inside of each roller and only keep the spongy foam parts. Steps to Follow The first step is to insert the pencil into one of the rollers roughly one inch to create a handhold. Ensure it is well-covered, but do not use it so much that it oozes or drips off the roller. Then tape the ear into a fairly firm roll in an upright position. The roller must be placed inside and near the bottom of the ear flap. Remove the pencil from the roller. You will have to keep your puppy distracted for a few minutes until the glue has time to dry. The rollers will fall out on their own in roughly a week. You can remove them before this if you need to. Taping is intended to provide support to the cartilage of the ears so that it can form adequately and be strong enough to make the ears stand up. It is a painless procedure, but it can cause some discomfort for your dog. Additionally, if your German Shepherd is genetically predisposed to having floppy ears, no amount of taping will override his genes. His ears may perk up and flop back down during teething, which begins around 3 months old. Once teething is over, his ears will once again perk up. At this stage, they may be somewhere in the middle. One ear may be standing while the other is floppy, or both may be half-standing. You may even have a German Shepherd who has both ears fully upright at this age! If they are not, you will have to visit your veterinarian or breeder for advice on what to do. German Shepherd Ear Positions There are several German Shepherd ear positions that you will observe as your puppy grows from a newborn to 8 months old. First, he will have teensy ears from birth to 7 weeks of age. This is when his ears will flop to both sides. His ears will experience the flying nun position from 10 to 14 weeks. For this position, his ears will still be flopped to the sides but will be slightly lifted. Starting at around 14 weeks, his ears will be in the comb-over position where both ears will flop to one side of his head or the other. Anywhere from 15 weeks on, his ears will go into the seashell position. This position has the ears mostly upright but not quite all the way. At some point, one ear may flop over while one is upright in the one-up ear position. This position may be concerning because an ear that was previously upright suddenly flops over. However, it is temporary, and the ear will return to normal. Finally, once these stages have been cycled through, the ears will go into the perfect upright position. Note that not all stages will be experienced by every dog. Age in weeks. Bright eyes, strong profiles, and of course, those perky, attentive ears! When you first bring your German Shepherd puppy home, its ears will probably be floppy and droopy — at times, those ears may try to make a stand, only to fall back down again. What gives!? As your German Shepherd grows and gets the right nutrition among other things , the cartilage gets stronger and stronger. And voila — straight, pointy German Shepherd ears! But is it really that simple? Sometimes, yes. Sometimes, no. German Shepherd puppy ears can be unpredictable! The key is to be patient and give those ears time to develop on their own before stepping in. Those ears should perk back up after teething is over. If you want to learn more about the timing of teething and what to look for, check out this article on German Shepherd puppy teething. When went to visit my German Shepherd, Allie pictured above at 7 weeks old , her ears were floppy and undeniably precious. I brought Allie home at 8 weeks, and those ears still had their ups and downs, but by 10 weeks old, her ears were up permanently. So, the key is to catch it in time. This flip-floppy stage is completely normal. Genetics can also come into play when some breeders try to breed specifically for German Shepherds with larger ears. As a result, those big, oversized, heavy ears may be too much to stand up. If pointy, perky ears are important to you, then choose your breeder and puppy carefully. Make sure to check out the parents — how do their ears look? Any significant trauma to the ears during this time can cause permanent damage — which may also cause droopy ears. Try to have everyone keep their hands off those adorable ears as much as possible. Parasites: Yuck. Puppies need chew toys, as it exercises their jaw and their head and neck muscles. Those muscles are important for perky puppy ears. So, let your puppy chew, chew, and chew on the right things of course. If you need some ideas for durable dog toys that can withstand those chomping jaws, then check out this article for my picks of the best tough German Shepherd chew toys. Stick to a high-quality, natural diet instead. Cottage cheese and yogurt both have plenty of calcium without overdoing it , and chicken feet are a natural source of glucosamine, which helps strengthen cartilage. Give those ears time to develop on their own before you resort to taping. At the end of the article are some sources that go over common methods of taping. Note: There are several options that you can use for this — there are even foam dog ear forms. Thin, white surgical tape that tears easily. A 2-inch wide tape works well, and you can also get this at Walmart, CVS, or somewhere similar. Note: Do NOT use duct tape or electrical tape — these will do way more harm than good! An unsharpened pencil or popsicle stick. Adhesive — either skin bond adhesive or eyelash glue are good choices. Give those ears plenty of time to develop and get stronger before taking action. How old was your German Shepherd puppy when its ears finally stood up? Let me know below! I get a lot of emails about taping German Shepherd puppy ears. The majority of these emails come from people who are jumping the gun and worrying too much. By that, I mean their pups are 3 or 4 months old and they are starting to panic because their puppy's ears are not standing. I tell these people that they need patience, they need to wait until their pup has finished teething. I caution these people not to jump the gun and tape the dog's ears too early or in the wrong way. I know people who have screwed their dog's ears up for life by doing this. I have had puppy customers who go ballistic on me and panic. So I issue a word of caution here. With that said, the other side of the spectrum of taping ears is something that many people do not take seriously until it's too late. When ears are taped at 7 and 8 months, there is very little chance of it working. This is an unfortunate fact of life. German Shepherd puppy ears can come up between 8 weeks and 6 months. If they are not up when the dog is through teething this varies from dog to dog but in general between 16 weeks and 20 weeks of age , I tell my puppy customers to get very interested in their ears. While it's not time to panic, it is time to sit up and take notice. The first thing to do is make sure that your puppy is in good health. This means no intestinal parasites. Take a stool sample to your vet to have it analyzed. It's also important to make sure the pup is getting good quality food. We feed and recommend a raw diet but if you do feed a commercial diet, I strongly recommend researching all the options available and feeding the highest-quality food you can afford. View our list of all-natural kibble alternatives. In fact, a lot of times, a pup will have both ears up and all of a sudden, they will come back down when the pup starts to teeth. Many owners panic when this happens. But not to worry, I have never seen a pup whose ears did not go back up when this happens. If a pup does not have his ears up by 5 months, I strongly recommend that you get involved with taping your dog's ears. Use the thin white surgical tape the kind that's paper-thin and tears easily. The 3M Micropore tape, 2" wide, works well. I like to use women's hair rollers. Take the plastic out of them and just use the foam. Wrap the ear around the foam and tape them into a tight roll. In a vertical position. Take a popsicle stick and attach it to the top part of both ears. In a horizontal position. The pup is going to tear the tape or stick off the ears several times. The key is to continue to re-tape the ears. Sooner or later, the pup will forget the tape and ignore it. About once a week, take the tape off and see if the ears will stand on their own. Continue to re-tape until the ears stand. If the ears are not up by 7 or 8 months, they are not going to come up. The ears should look like this once taped. The same dog with ears now up. I have seen ears that did not stand, which in my opinion would have stood had they been taped. So this process is not something to take lightly. I also need to say that many ears will be a little weak right after taping but with time, they will strengthen. So when an ear does not stand perfectly after taping don't panic. Just have patience and see what happens. You will really not have an idea exactly what you have until the pup is 12 months old. When ears do not stand, there are ear implants that can be surgically added. I have no experience with this and do not know anything about them. If you are unlucky enough to have a dog whose ears will not stand, I would point you toward a vet that has some experience in this area. I don't think it's something that normal small animal vets know how to do well. In my opinion, too young to tape. The material to use to tape German Shepherd Ears The pup with its ears taped I prefer taping German Shepherd Dogs ears after the dog has finished teething. This usually means the dog is older than 4 - 6 months. Maybe waiting another month would have been a better idea for this puppy.

Evaluate the conditions of the breeder and the treatment of every puppy. The type of dog breeder you choose is important, so consider different factors like the acreage, reputation, and pedigree. Considering how your New York dog breeder raised them is very important to their health and learning curve. If they raise your golden retriever in a positive environment, they should have an obedient and loving personality. As you select your puppy, consider the appearance, age, size, and gender. For instance, the gender of the Golden Retriever has a large impact on its personality. Choose a puppy compatible with your personality. Golden Retrievers can be outrageously disobedient without early training and socialization from their breeders. Without training from breeders, your puppy will certainly require professional training later in life to receive the required discipline that a Golden Retriever needs. Things to Consider with a Christmas Puppy December 5, By Archview Labradoodles Leave a Comment Christmas is the time that we gather together as friends and family and celebrate with one another! Some people choose to bring a new puppy into the mix at this time. While this can be a controversial topic online, we think that a puppy can be an excellent gift for someone who has thoroughly considered the responsibilities of a new dog. Thinking about adopting a puppy for a holiday surprise? Here are some things to keep in mind! A puppy is a lifelong commitment that can live for upwards of ten years with proper care. So when you are thinking of investing in a puppy as a gift, make sure you are doing your research. If you have had a puppy before, then you know what you are signing up for. If this will be the first time this person has had a puppy, however, this can be a hard time of year to balance that responsibility and the holiday festivities. Puppies can sometimes be a bit cantankerous and love to throw late-night parties in their kennels or declare your favorite pair of shoes as their new chew-toy. Keep in mind that getting a new puppy is not always sunshine and rainbows! Puppies require a lot of hard work and dedication, but they are totally worth it in the end. The Gift of a Puppy is One That Keeps On Giving A puppy can easily become a beloved member of your family, which is why they can make such a special Christmas surprise! Your family will cherish the many wonderful memories with your new addition, including the surprise of realizing they have a new furry friend on Christmas morning. Puppies can also give you some other… unanticipated gifts. .It is important to remember that whoever is on the receiving end of this puppy will also need to maintain a certain quality of life for their new addition. Veterinary care, grooming costs, training fees, special diets if needed, and more can rack up over the years. If the person who you are wishing to gift a puppy to is not ready for that financial commitment, a puppy can sometimes be more of a burden then a blessing. However, if this person has done their research and has been dreaming of their own Australian Labradoodle for some time now, this gift can be life-changing! Many of our puppies have gone on to be wonderful companions, therapy dogs, and athletes! The Australian Labradoodle is a wonderful dog for many lifestyles, and their happy-go-lucky attitudes really mesh well with most family types. If you want to get a puppy as a present this Christmas, ask yourself these questions: Will you or someone else be able to assist with the training and socialization of this puppy? Or will it fall solely on the person you are gifting the puppy to? If the person you are gifting the puppy to is no longer able to care for this puppy, financially or due to life-changing circumstances, are you prepared to give this puppy a loving, forever home? Is this person home enough to care for a puppy on their own, or do they have a support system behind them to let the puppy out for frequent potty breaks, take them on walks, etc. Does this person have the financial stability to care for a growing puppy? What about if the puppy were to get sick or have an accident, could the person provide the necessary veterinary care? Has this person researched what type of puppy that they would like and understand the requirements that come along with adopting an Australian Labradoodle such as grooming, etc? If you answered no to any of these questions, now might not be the right time to surprise a loved one with a puppy- and that is okay! A new puppy should be a well-thought-out decision, and we are here to help you with that! However, if your family has taken all of these things into consideration, a Christmas puppy could be the perfect way to bring cheer to your household this year!
Do you want a charming and playful dog? I hope you do because that is what the Pug breed is. They are energetic and attention seeking, always running around and being part of the family. As they get older they do calm down and become much calmer dogs, but even then they will always want to be around their favorite person — YOU. What to Expect From a Puppy Like any other puppies, Pug puppies have a lot of energy which they will put into running around and seeking the attention of their owner. Having a small attention span they will run around your house finding ways to have fun. One minute they will want to snuggle up next to you and the next they will be running around making trouble just so they can get you to chase them around. You can expect your puppy to be: playful attention seeking curious The attention seeking and curiosity is often what gets these little guys in trouble. This early in their life, they are learning about their surroundings and how to deal with this. This is the perfect time to start training your Pug puppy. The sooner you start, the quicker he will learn. The Pug You Always Wanted As your Pug grows older, his personality and behavior will start taking a more concrete shape. Like within any breed the personality of a dog will vary from one dog to another, but since this breed has been selected and bred to have certain traits you can expect your Pug to have the following traits. Docile — He will become more docile, meaning that he will be more willing to be controlled and will be willing to do what you tell him. This is a wonderful quality as it is easier to train your pug to listen to you and make yourself the household leader in his life. Clever — By being fairly smart dogs, you can expect your pug to be pretty clever. Energetic — Naturally pugs are very energetic and will run around and try to play and seek your attention. Charming -Pugs are naturally beautiful dogs. They are small with an adorable face that will make anyone want to hold and cuddle them. Of course they know this and will use every opportunity they have to charm you. Sociable — You never want your Pug to be in complete isolation. Leaving for work and such is ok, but to leave him unattended for long periods of time will put a lot of stress on him. He is a social creature that will always seek to be with someone. Protective — Pugs are known to be guard dogs on some occasions. In the past they have been used in the military as tracking dogs and guard dogs. This shows that they can be protective and you can expect your pug to be protective over what he considers his. It is a great quality as long as you know how to make sure he is protecting you and your things and not himself and his things from you. Stubborn — Having a natural stubborn personality, most pugs will do what they want to do and if they do not receive the proper training it can be hard to change their mind. With all of the traits of this breed, Pugs can be a perfect pet for someone who wants a little adorable dog full of love and excitement. However to truly have an obedient and happy dog you have to know how to properly train them, and the earlier the training starts the better. A few minutes of training a day should be enough in most cases, of course unless your dog has some real bad behavior problems. You can learn more about Pug training, care and health by reading this book about Pugs. Related Articles. Like any puppy, Pugs display playful bursts of energy before they suddenly collapse for a nap. They seem to have two speeds fast and stop! The good news is that Pug pups will not always be this hyperactive. They usually settle down after a couple of years and morph into more sedate lap dogs who love to take a lot of naps. Pugs are very happy, excitable dogs who want nothing more than to play and hang out with you. Their natural exuberance is what makes Pugs so fun to be around. Pugs slow down a bit as they grow older, but fortunately, they never lose their zeal for having fun! Most Pugs have enthusiastic personalities with sweet dispositions making them great companions. Whether they are hanging out on your lap or begging you to throw the ball for them, they demand a lot of attention! Combine this with youthful puppy energy and you have a pretty lively little dog! However, for the most part, Pugs are not high maintenance click here to read more. I actually think of Pugs as being more joyous and playful than hyper. But they are prone to some crazy antics at times and can become obsessive about their playtime. Pugs need quality playtime but they also need to be taught moderation as they mature. A good example of this is my Pug-mix dog, Georgia, who absolutely loves her balls! She gets particularly attached to tennis balls and softer rubber balls that she can hold and squish in her mouth. She could walk around all day with a ball in her mouth if I allowed it! Georgia sneaks around with her favorite Chew King ball. In addition to her Insum Tennis Balls , Georgia really loves her Chew King balls which are easy for her to catch and hold in her mouth. Getting the ball back is a major challenge which usually involves high-value special food! I mostly use the harder Snub dog balls when we go to the dog park to play fetch. These are slightly bigger, very durable, and practically indestructible. And, because they are not as fun and squishable, she will actually bring them back to me. You can see more about my recommendations for balls and other toys on my recommended products page for dog toys. I think another reason Pugs get branded as being hyper is due to their incredibly high energy and playfulness, especially as puppies. A Pug pup will race around, bouncing from one thing to the next. Then he will suddenly crash in a heap and take a nap. Pugs only seem to know two speeds— fast forward and drop dead! Pugs get these incredible bursts of energy, which may seem like hyperactivity. But it is really just the way Pugs have fun and let off pent-up steam. As puppies, Pugs are probably more prone to zoomies and excitable behavior than other breeds. This will usually go on for about two years until they finally begin to mellow. Eventually, they will be content to hang out by your side and lounge around on the sofa. Mature Pugs have a reputation for being lap dogs who love to nap, which is why Chinese royalty loved them so much! An additional reason Pugs can sometimes become a little hyper is their love to explore! And, this often involves tasting the world with their tongue. Pugs are very motivated by anything they can taste, and they love to eat. If you want a Pug to do a trick, give her a treat! My dog Georgia wakes me up every morning by licking my nose see my post. She wants me to know that it is time for her breakfast and she is quite anxious about getting it! She will do just about anything for a small bit of food or even a crumb. My kitchen floors have never been so clean! And as a puppy, your Pug will need more frequent attention and brief play times at least times a day. Ensure Your Pug Gets Adequate Sleep — Whether your Pug is a puppy or an adult, having a consistent sleeping and waking schedule is extremely helpful. Consider using a crate as a quiet den for your new puppy for the first few months. Then when your dog gets older, make sure she has a comfy bed in a quiet space. A little bit is fine. But keep in mind that Pugs are not athletes. They have short little legs and stout bodies. A fun walk to the park or around the neighborhood should suffice. A couple of additional play times during the day for an adult is good, and a puppy will need play periods in between naps. Puzzle Games — Since Pugs love to eat, dog puzzle games that involve food keep them very engaged. I have two Outward Hound interactive food puzzles for my dogs and they love them. It keeps them engaged for at least minutes. These puzzles are fun and work their minds, which will help with pent-up energy. Sometimes simple Kong toys stuffed with kibble, peanut butter, or Cheese Whiz work pretty well for a quick distraction. Pugs Do Not Like to Be Alone — Pugs were bred to be companion dogs and they love nothing more than to be right by our side. Therefore, leaving a Pug alone for several hours each day could lead to separation anxiety click this link to see my post. Pugs do best in a family in which someone will be home at least for part of the day. If this is not possible, have a friend or neighbor spend some time with your pooch each day. If you want a really independent dog, a Pug may not be the best choice for you. But if you work at home, a Pug could be ideal. Training — Obedience training is always helpful, but especially with a Pug who has a tendency to be a bit stubborn and even mischievous at times. Training classes will help to socialize your Pug, provide your Pug with a routine, and help with discipline issues. Going to classes together is also a great way to bond with him. Training is also a great way to help a dog stay calm as he learns what you want him to do, and he will be more clear about what is expected of him. Final Thoughts Pugs may seem hyper, but they are mostly just happy energetic dogs. Once you get through the puppy stage and have some training and a routine established, your Pug will become a fun, relaxed dog who will sleep on your lap, play with you, lick you, and be a great companion! Share this post:. He really does. If your children cannot play calmly with him either because he won't stay calm or because they cannot see the signs he is getting too excited and cam things down in time then stop all play between your puppy and children until he is older and better able to self-control. Battendog at the same age was not 'allowed' to play with anyone but very close adults, because it would literally take seconds to push him from bouncy and funny into boisterous and harmful. I played with him and spent lots of practise time teaching him to stay calm - anything too excited stops pay for a few seconds or minutes to calm down - and teaching him an emergency "stop! Biting: if he's doing it then it is working for him in some way. Work out what he gets out of biting you and block it. Most likely, what he gets are squeally, angry, excited people paying attention to him. Everyone in the house must follow the same routine to ensure biting never gets him anything he wants. Food: reward him for doing something else. Get him on a mat and reward him loads just for being there. When eating, have him go to his mat and toss him a treat every few seconds. He wil stay on the mat if that mat is where he gets treats. Over time you get reduce how many treats you throw him, leaving longer and longer between them. You should then get to a point where he sits on his mat all through your meal for a treat at the end. Your call whether you keep that up. He's not refusing the listen. It's just that he has learned is learning that listening to you is nowhere near as rewarding as doing what he's doing. Set your home and behaviour up so that listening to you is much, much more rewarding than being a little bugger and he will do that instead. Think about the things he loves the best and ways you can control his access to those things unless he listens to you. If he loves chasing a ball, then have him sit or lie down before you throw it. Do this often and it will become a learned behaviour that you can use in other scenarios, such as sitting for his lead to be put on. If he loves food then every time you feed him is a chance to teac him something. The act of learning and listening is as important as whatever is being learned. Above all, what he needs is patience and persistence from you. You keep doing the right things, steadily and patiently in the hope he comes good after all him hormones have calmed back down again about another months. Add message. We'll dive into more details on each of these: 1 Illness or injury. As with any sort of strange behavior, health issues are always a top concern. Not feeling well almost always manifests as changes in mood. Any physical issues such as limping, favoring a certain part of the body, or inability to walk or run as usual point to some sort of injury or condition. What to do: When in doubt about any possible health issue, contact the vet. Eating changes or gastrointestinal issues are just a few reasons to contact the veterinarian and schedule a checkup. If you have a female Pug that has not been spayed and is therefore entering in and out of heat cycles , this can cause her to feel moody. Heat typically occurs twice per year. It can last 2 to 3 weeks. In addition, it is believed that some dogs feel abdominal cramping, which can lend to the bad mood. What to do: You can help by allowing your Pug to retreat if she wishes, being sure that she has a great bed to rest on, and if she appears to be in discomfort placing a warm heating pad next to her abdomen can help be sure that this is set on warm, not hot, and that your Pug cannot chew on any cords. Ky Ky, at 2 years old, photo courtesy of The Van Allen Family 3 Loss of a companion If a Pug no longer sees a friend animal or human , this can have a huge impact on him. This is generally most severe if a person, dog, or other is no longer part of the household. But, a Pug can also feel quite down even if he does not see a regular visitor. If your Pug is feeling sad or down for this reason, it will be important to allow him to grieve the loss. If it was a household member that is gone, it will be normal for a Pug to roam the house looking for him, or to gaze out of a window waiting for that person to arrive. What to do: It can be hard to watch a Pug feel unhappy like this. While you will want to give him time to accept the loss, there are some things that you can do. It can help to engage your Pug in an activity that is new to him. This can be a walk in a new neighborhood, or a visit to a new place. Any sort of safe location in which he can see new things, hear new sounds, and smell new scents can help to perk him up. This can be a lake shore, hiking trail, pet store… any place that is novel. When you find a spot that your Pug seems to enjoy and that has let him shake off his bad mood for a while, try to make that a new ritual for both of you. Take him there as often as possible, but at least once a week at minimum. And of course, this is applicable to a negative change. Some examples include: Spending less time with his human A new household member human or pet A move to a new house Changes in the household vibe such as more noise, more visitors, etc. What to do: How you help your Pug come out of a funk will depend on what type of change triggered him to start to feel depressed. But, if the situation is already occurring, you can: Be sure to keep both pets separate in regard to where they eat, rest, and sleep. Even if you envisioned your Pug having a new best friend, that sort of bond cannot be forced. Until the two are ready, they should feel as if they have their own areas for food, and to rest both during the day and at night to sleep. If this is a matter of having two Pugs or two dogs, you may need to help them decide who the leader is. Hopefully, your Pug already sees you as the alpha. But with more than one pet, there is also an alpha dog, the leader of the animal pack. Normally it is the older dog; but, it is not always so and can also depend on gender. If the dogs are unclear about where they stand, you can help them by doing things for the alpha first. This applies to the order in which the food bowls are placed down, leashes are attached, dogs are let out, etc. Bowls in a certain corner of the kitchen, toys to the side of the sofa, etc. Dogs can feel wary until they understand that they are occupants and not just visitors, so it can take some time. Each day, walk your Pug from room to room. And when you take him outside, walk him around the perimeter of the yard. He may seem irritated or withdrawn. Any sort of commotions should be kept to a minimum. And if some of these sorts of things cannot be avoided, set up an area for your Pug to retreat to if he has the urge to get away from things. Now, this kind of odd behavior is just fine! Lilly 2 years old and Ky Ky 2 years old , photo courtesy of The Van Allen Family 5 Boredom While a Pug may be perfectly happy to sit by you while you watch TV, and may seem just fine laying down while you do some household chores, ongoing monotony can really start to wear on a Pug. Some windows of down time are just fine. Days, weeks, or months on end can end up making a Pug rather depressed. Also, as a Pug matures, issues with boredom can increase. This is because as he ages, his comprehension of the world strengthens. What used to satisfy a puppy may not be enough for an adult Pug. He should have at least 2 walks per day, a session of some type of learning commands, a trick, heeling, etc. Pugs should have toys that encourage independent play. Some great ones to get are those that speak or make silly noises. The Animal Sounds Babble Ball is great too; this lets out 20 funny animals sounds, including frogs, goats, horses, and more. That is just one, the Multipet line of toys has a bunch of different animals, each is a good sized stuffed animal, sturdy, and lets us fun sounds. Are there any errands that you run without your Pug that you actually could take him with you for? Are you sure? As long as you have a safe car seat for your Pug , and keep him on leash and harness, let him to be your companion for shopping and running errands as much as possible. When a Pug Acts Restless The Pug breed can get a bad rep sometimes, being thought of as a touch lazy and inactive. But, Pug owners know that this breed actually has a pretty good energy level. With Pugs, there is usually a good balance of activity and rest. Mood changes that include agitation, restlessness, or irritation definitely point to some sort of problem. Reasons for acting restless include: Pent-up energy most common reason Health issue or injury possible We'll dive into each of these: 1 Pent-up energy The Pug is often underrated in this regard. But, Pugs can get very disturbed if they are not allowed to release their natural energy. This is very common in the winter , when weather keeps both owners and dogs inside more often, but can also happen just from not getting outside enough for his daily walks. Frank, photo courtesy of Nina Coley What to do: 1- If you do not take your Pug for two walks per day, now is the time to start. If cold weather is getting in your way, place a lined vest on your Pug like the Kuoser Waterproof Windproof British Style Plaid Dog Vest , be sure that his paws are protected from the cold and he has traction via a good paw wax, and dress warmly yourself. Of course, a concern with this breed is overheating; however, as long as your Pug appears to have the energy, you take a break every 15 minutes, and bring along water to for him to re-hydrate, you can often extend walks. Playing fetch or teaching commands are always good choices. If your Pug knows all of the basic commands, take it up a notch by teaching him some tricks. Any of these sorts of odd behaviors may be red flags of a hip, bone, back, or other physical issue. However, if a Pug suddenly acts afraid for no apparent reason, this can be worrying. Whining and cowering down Reasons for acting afraid include: Actually being startled or scared Feeling uncomfortable, mostly due to temperature We'll dive into each of these: 1 The most common cause is the one you assumed; the Pug is afraid of something. The tricky part is trying to figure out what it is, if the reason is not clear. In some cases, this can be related to the incredible sense of hearing that canines possess. A puppy or dog may have heard an alarming noise that his human simply did not pick up on. This may be other dogs barking, police sirens, or other such noises. If so, the episode should be over quickly. In other instances, the cause can be a mystery. It can be random things… a dog may see his reflection in a mirror and get spooked studies show that canines cannot identify their own reflection , or even a former tumble down steps that now make a dog wary when he goes near them. What to do: How you act will have a big impact on how your Pug interprets things. Since you are his leader, he will look to you for cues on whether or not his behavior is valid. If you coddle him, swoop him up, and offer soothing words of concern, that will just be giving affirmation that he should be scared. It is best to acknowledge that he has sensed something. And then, show him that all is well and re-direct his attention. Be sure that your body language conveys what you are saying. If you coddle him, swooping him up and offer soothing words of concern, that will just be giving affirmation that he should be scared. Sometimes shivering, cuddling up close, and other such behaviors can be misinterpreted as a Pug being scared, when he is actually trembling and seeking warmth due to feeling chilled. Though this breed has a thick coat, this does not make him invincible to the cold. And being a small dog, cold intolerance is not uncommon. What to do: Check your house for drafts and air currents. In the winter, some spots that you do not normally access, but your Pug does, like the floor can have drafts. You may wish to place clothing on your Pug like a soft shirt or vest. Once he has another layer on his core body, he should feel more comfortable. Or use his eyes to follow unseen things across the wall? If so, you are not alone. Lots of dogs react to things that their humans cannot see or hear. The reason for this is due to incredible canine hearing. Dogs hear things that we cannot hear without special instruments. We only hear things in the frequency range of , Hz. But, your Pug hears things in the much larger range of , Hz. And, your Pug can hear noises from 4 times the distance that you can. So, if your puppy or dog is reacting to something that you can neither see or hear, changes are that he is behaving that way for good reason. What to do: Do the exact same thing as stated above in cases of a Pug acting afraid with no reason. Acknowledge that he is noticing something, and then re-direct his attention. This is a pretty even-keeled breed, so any sort of strange, weird, or odd behavior usually has a root cause that should be assessed. March 30, by Susan Most dogs usually have a hyperedge to them, but some can be a bit too hyper for most people. Seasoned pug owners can all come to agree that their dogs can be pretty active and curious most of the day, and that can raise questions for new and confused pug owners. Why Are Pugs So Hyper? Hyperactivity affects all puppies, regardless of breed. Excessive hyperactivity in pugs is usually a result of extreme excitement or reaction to someone or something else being hyper as well. Pugs are companion dogs, therefore they are more susceptible to separation anxiety , which may lead to excessive hyperactivity. It is most detectable in puppies, but it can also affect adult pugs too. Pugs with high energy can be very active and even aggressive, but this is completely normal. It just means that it will happen less often, as older dogs will just want to cuddle next to their owner. The zoomies are considered to be normal behavior for breeds like pugs. With that being said, there is no need to be too concerned about it, especially since it only lasts for a few minutes at a time. There is still a need to be a bit cautious though, as too much activity can get out of hand fast. What Triggers Frenetic Random Activity Periods in Pugs As mentioned above, pugs can get pretty excited from the sight of someone or something else getting excited. If people are being playful and fun with one another, the pug will want to join in and get in on the action as well. It is just a natural part of their DNA. Pugs can also become really excited and hyper when certain things in the atmosphere make noise or commotion. This includes things like doorbells, people, kids, and more. Most pugs will react by squealing or running around the area. Another thing that can easily trigger the zoomies in most pugs is bath time. Many Pug owners will tell you that your pooch can become overly animated after bath time. This hyper behavior is an expression of happiness that the bath is over. That is usually because dog bathing requires the owner to restrain the dog for a while and use water that may be uncomfortable for them. This can easily make any dog pretty stressed out and fearful. When the bath is over, they are relieved. Mindy my Pug would get the zoomies whenever we would try to dry her off with a towel after her bath. An episode of hyperactivity will involve a short burst of energy when your pooch runs around in a wild run. Here are some of the signs to watch for your Pug has a case of the zoomies. They suddenly break into a gallop from standing still. Excited eyes A squatted run like they are going to attack something. They will run in tight turns and spins to change direction quickly. Watch this video to see what the zoomies look like. Are Zoomies Dangerous? However, if you live in a small space, your dog can knock over things and make a mess in their frenzy. They may slip on a rug or your hardwood floors and bump into your coffee table, or other furniture and hurt themselves. As a Pug parent, there are some things you can do to help control this type of behavior to keep them safe. Some pet owners will notice their Pugs become more hyper at night or in the early morning hours. A hyperactive Pug can be hard to calm down, but it is possible to settle your dog down. A long day of playing and exercise will make the dog tired at the end of the day. In that case, it is best to try to set up some sort of playtime area or routine that the pug can do to keep itself entertained for a certain amount of time during the day. If you have a fenced-in backyard, you can install a pet door and allow Fido to play outside, just make sure there are no dangers in your backyard. That gives the owner a break and the pug the ability to exercise and wear itself out. Another good idea would be to take it to a dog park for a day of fun and exercise. It is best to try to reach for 30 minutes of daily exercise. This can be easily achieved with two 15 minute walks or two 15 minutes games of fetch. Create a Daily Routine If a pug is working on a daily routine with the owner, this may help lower stress and anxiety. It is best to try to stick to a consistent and easy schedule from morning to night. Include everything from waking up and eating breakfast to settling down and eating dinner. Routines usually help dogs get a sense of belonging and comfort since they know what to expect of the day. Some pug owners can tell what time of day the zoomies usually happen. Some pugs get it in the morning while others get it at night. If that can be identified, give the pug a distraction at that time to settle down. Separation Anxiety You can usually find various techniques and tips online to help lessen separation anxiety with pugs. Smart toys and interactive toys may be perfect for this type of dilemma. Enjoy it while it lasts, because it will subside as they become older. References And Further Reading. Last Words Are Pugs Hyper? Yes, they can be. Why Are Pugs Hyper? Pablo the Pug has the zoomies! When people get a Pug puppy for the first time, they often ask me: will my Pug ever calm down? And the answer is yes. Although it can carry on into adulthood, canine hyperactivity is most prevalent in puppies. This is a natural and important part of puppyhood. Most Pug puppies will start to calm down as they mature. They will still get the zoomies from time to time, but the days of their puppyish antics should diminish considerably. In most cases, the zoomies are nothing to worry about. Random bouts of hyperactivity are part and parcel of being a dog. The zoomies are usually over in a few minutes, and your Pug should remain relatively calm for the rest of the day. However, there are some practical considerations to take note of. Many Pug owners find that they can predict when their pup is going to get a bout of the zoomies, giving them a window to remove any hazards ahead of time. How To Keep Pug Hyperactivity At Bay Even though periods of hyperactivity are completely normal, there are some things we can do to keep our Pugs as calm as possible and moderate that frenetic behavior. Regular exercise Daily exercise and playtime will use up your Pugs excess energy and reduce the chance of a hyperactive episode. Aim for between 20 and 30 minutes of physical activity each day. Aim to split this into two e. Once they are all tuckered out, your Pug will just want to snuggle on the sofa with mum or dad. If you spend a significant amount of the day away at work then try to ensure that your Pug has plenty of opportunities to engage in independent play. You might wish to create a designated play area or provide some treat-dispensing toys. Daily routines Keeping to a solid routine is really beneficial for Pug behavior. Routines alleviate stress and anxiety and promote consistent behaviors. By reducing stressors, your Pug is less likely to indulge in anxiety-driven hyperactivity. Additionally, if you know when your Pug is likely to act out, you can provide a fun distraction to divert their attention. Socialization Socialization with people and other dogs is essential for healthy canine development. Socializing provides mental and physical stimulation and makes use of all that excess energy. If not, why not buddy up with a dog-owner friend or visit a dog park a few times each week. Reduce anxiety For some Pugs, the key to reducing hyperactivity is treating the root of the problem — anxiety. As social animals, Pugs are particularly prone to separation anxiety. Finding ways to minimize the distress your pet feels will help them to calm down. Distractions are great that could be a fun toy or puzzle. Some Pug owners have even tried canine aromatherapy. Last Words Are Pugs hyper? Yes, they certainly can be. But a moderate amount of hyperactivity is nothing to worry about. Most of the time the zoomies die down after puppyhood. However, there are ways to keep hyperactive behaviors at bay. Exercise, moderating anxiety, adequate socialization, and consistent daily routines can make the world of difference. In fact, their quirkiness and pug behavior only adds to their appeal. Pug behavior can also be occasionally confusing and lead to trouble. Pugs are a big dog in a small dog body, which means they can be a little too brave when they run up to hump a German Shepherd at the dog park. They can also be a bit stubborn and seem to have selective hearing. Being food-motivated works to their advantage: they will do anything for treats and positive reinforcement. You can trust that we maintain strict editorial integrity in our writing and assessments; however, we receive compensation when you click on links to products from our partners and get approved. Read our full disclosure. Intact animals are definitely more likely to mount others, so spaying or neutering is the best prevention. If your puppy humps his or her littermates, simply redirect the behavior quietly and move on. Some rescue pugs, who may have remained intact for longer OR simply discovered the joy of humping, struggle with this behavior. This is especially true when they feel insecure like when company or a new dog comes to visit. Offer them an exciting alternative like a treat or a chew toy instead. Lastly, when your pug is in a new situation or meeting a new friend, keep them on a leash so you remain in control of their behavior yes, even in the house. You want me to twirl like a ballerina for a cookie? Here I go! Each problem can be addressed separately. Dog-proof your house to prevent your pug from getting into foods that could make them ill. This includes, storing foods like candy and chocolate in higher cupboards and always closing and latching pantry and closet doors. Install baby-proof latches on your cupboards if your pug is a Houdini-type. Weigh down your trash bin with a brick or rock in the bottom and keep it covered or enclosed. Keep your litter box clean and scooped we recommend the litter-robot and pick up the house. Never leave out leftover food or garbage. Pugs will find a way. When pugs go out, keep them on a leash always. If they see a delicious sidewalk sandwich or a poo snack keeping them on a leash will help you pull them away and redirect. That good pug behavior deserves a treat! Keep your own yard picked up, so pugs can avoid temptation. Preventing obesity in pugs is an important part of keeping your pug healthy. Many concerns such as joint issues, diabetes and breathing problems can be prevented simply by keeping your pug at a healthy weight. To slow your pug down, we suggest a slow feeder dog bowl. This gives your pug a chance to actually taste her food before she snarfs it down. Feed your pug two or three small meals per day. A pug left to her own devices can polish off a bowl of kibble in three seconds flat. Help her control her portions. Plus, your food may contain ingredients that could make your pug ill like avocado or chocolate. Carrots, peas and pumpkin make great healthy snackies, or try small bites of chicken, liver or trainer treats. In fact, many pugs can lick you for hours. Then wipe it with a little vinegar or lemon juice which can deter the constant licking. If they start licking, make a noise to startle them, and then redirect the behavior to a more appropriate licking toy. The first step is to stop allowing it to happen. Licking is a way that pugs find comfort. Keep harmony in your grumble by spending plenty of one-on-one time with each individual pug. Keep playtime light and fun. Help everyone get plenty of exercise and allow breaks and downtime where the whole pack can get some moments alone to de-stress. Alleviate the insecurity by giving your pug privacy during mealtimes. For new human or non-canine family members, simply be sure your pug is receiving plenty of attention and positive reinforcement whenever the new friend is around. Allow them to retreat to their crate or room if they need some alone time especially with older pugs and give them plenty of space. Always encourage children to be very gentle with pugs and never tease them with food or toys. Pugs are extremely gentle, but they will nip in very rare occasions, especially if they feel unsafe. Remember they are small and can get hurt or frightened. In order to train your pug, you have to build their trust. Practice it and reward this command over and over. You can practice recall with your pug on a long leash or in a fenced yard, but first begin in the house. Stand about 20 feet away from your pug with a high value treat like hotdogs or cheese. Use the command, reward your pug when she comes running. Stand farther away, repeat. Give the command, reward, repeat. Try this command under many different distractions and scenarios. Move it to the yard. Then practice on a long leash or at the park. Reward your pug every single time. As for the many other times when your pug seems not to hear you such as when you call their name, or ask them to come --you can practice similarly, using different command along with a clicker and a treat. Eventually wean your pug off the treats giving them every third or fourth response. Practice your commands regularly. But pugs do bark. Some pugs react to passersby at the window, squirrels on the bird feeder or other dogs on TV. This takes practice and you may feel like a human Pez dispenser for a while but eventually your pug will learn that dogs on TV mean treats in their tummy! Similarly, when your pug reacts to something outside, the doorbell or another noise with a barking frenzy, redirect their attention back to you. Then give them a treat. Practice the trigger behavior and reinforce the desired reaction over and over. Being Stubborn Stubborn? Even though pugs are occasionally stubborn, they are quite trainable and will rise to the occasion. Pugs are very smart, easily motivated by food and praise and love to make you happy. If your pug can channel their energy into positive behaviors, they just may surprise you with their transformation. Many pugs make excellent therapy dogs and you could even start your pug as a volunteer! Almost all dogs benefit from the socialization and regime provided by a positive training class. Even experienced owners can brush up on their skills and connect with their pug one-on-one. Giving your pug the gift of proper training will help strengthen your relationship, boost your communication and lead to many happy years to come!
It is still hard for me to wrap my head around the fact that my baby is three. It seems like just yesterday that John Davis was born , yet I blinked and some how I have a three year old. Celebrate big and sweet while they still let us. Well, fast forward to this year and add in the busyness of having a toddler and a baby and I found myself a month out from his birthday with absolutely no plans of what I was going to do. While browsing around in search of ideas I came across these adorable invitations from Dixie Design and fell in love! It was right up my alley with all of the blue and white, puppies, and of course, gingham! I spread out all of the food on our kitchen island on a classic white linen tablecloth. Our kitchen opens up to our family room and breakfast nook which makes for easy entertaining. I created an inexpensive table runner with blue gingham fabric from Hobby Lobby by simply cutting the edges with pinking shears to prevent fraying. I do this for almost every party because it is so easy and inexpensive to buy a few yards of fabric. The adorable cake, which also served as the centerpiece, was made by one of our neighbors. She does not have a business, but if you are local you can send me a message and I will pass along her name. She is simply the best and oh so affordable! Her cakes are absolutely beautiful but they taste even better than they look. Not to mention it was so convenient going only a few houses down to pick up the cake the morning of the party. I use them for just about everything and switch out the ribbon on top accordingly. I wrapped up the utensils in polka dot napkins from Party City and tied them with a blue ribbon. I used these matching polka dot plates and napkins , and served the cake with these coordinating dessert plates and dessert napkins. Taking a little extra time to tie your utensils is not only easy and practical it makes it so easy for guests to grab them and go! What is it about a kids table that is so sweet? I made the banner by simply cutting triangles out of craft paper and hot gluing them onto a white ribbon. Old fashioned party hats make a cute table accessory and the kids loved wearing them too. Can you spy my sweet little birthday boy in the background? I saw them and just had to have them! I had originally planned to put them in the party favor bags, but when I saw how cute they were I decided to set them out on the tables instead. They were so reasonably priced at just ten dollars for two dozen and they were the perfect finishing touch for the table. I ran into Hobby Lobby the day before the party procrastinator looking for small white metal buckets to put them in. Of course it was the day before the party and of course my local Hobby Lobby had every color bucket imaginable except for white. Why does it always work that way?! With no time to waste I threw these metal buckets in the buggy and was out spray painting them white in our backyard the night before the party. I stuck some floral foam from the DollarTree down in each bucket and topped them with white paper shreds also from the DollarTree. And obviously I just had to tie a blue ribbon around each lollipop stick. I used this cookie cutter to cut them into the dog shape. Once you have prepared your sandwiches, put them in between two damp paper towels and place them inside an airtight ziplock back. When you are ready to set your sandwiches out on your serving tray, place the damp paper towels on top of your sandwiches until your guests arrive. This will keep your bread nice and soft and prevent it from drying out before the party starts. These little dog shaped sandwiches were so simple, but everyone went crazy over them! Even I have to say they were so cute! Also on the menu: puppy chow. I made a HUGE batch of this even doubled the recipe and it was gone in no time. Note to self: next time, quadruple the recipe! Also on the menu: pimento cheese and crackers. This Palmetto pimento cheese is to die for. We bought two big tubs from Costco and every single bit of it was gone. This is another one of those things that is very inexpensive and very easy to do, but adds so much. We also had chicken fingers and honey mustard dipping sauce, a veggie tray with ranch dressing, a fruit tray, and chicken salad and croissants. All of the fruit and veggies came from Costco. I cut them up and placed them on white serving trays the night before the party. They were ready to go and all I had to do was pull them out of the fridge the morning of the party. I had originally planned on making a big batch of chicken salad what was I thinking?! For drinks we had water, tea and apple juice boxes for the children. Snips and Snails and Puppy Dog Tails Party Favors One of my favorite things to do for a party is put together cute party favor bags for the children, and these puppy dog bags did not disappoint! I started with a plain white craft bag from Hobby Lobby. I cut out the shapes for the ears, eyes, nose and hat from cardstock and used a hot glue gun to glue each piece onto the bag. I tied the top together with raffia which makes the perfect finishing touch! I set them out on our entryway table so that guests could see them when they entered and grab one to go when they left. I love the Little Golden Books because they are so classic. I made a printable tag for the book and for the puppy chow and tied them on with raffia to coordinate with the bags. I used this scalloped circle punch to cut them out. While I was cutting out the shapes for the party favor bags, I also made a puppy dog garland banner for the mantel. This puppy dog banner just may have been my favorite thing from the entire party! I love the way the baby blue stands out against all of the white! Another thing I decided the day before the party? That we needed a door hanger for the party! Then I got to painting with white craft paint and used a blue paint pen for the lettering. One of my other favorite things from the party was the giant dog wearing a party hat and holding balloons in his mouth. He greeted guests outside as they walked up to the front door. I used our jigsaw to cut out the shape and attached it to stakes to stick down into the ground. A few days before the party I had to run into Target to grab a few things. Obviously I cannot go into Target without checking out all the cuteness in the dollar spot. Lo and behold they had this cute little wooden snail! Obviously it was just meant to be : I painted him green and he looked so cute next to the dog. Happy 3rd Birthday John Davis! How cute does my sweet boy look in his puppy dog birthday shirt? How lucky am I to be able to call up Mother and place an order for custom clothing?? Fletcher was ready for a nap before the party even started and Mr. Fletcher slept through almost the entire party, which actually worked out well because we were able to give John Davis our full attention. And he definitely enjoyed that piece of cake! Who needs utensils when you can eat icing with your hands? Love these rare pictures of just me and my big boy! And my little boy, too! These pictures of our little family might just be some of my favorites of all time. But they so perfectly depict our lives right now: fast and furious with two energetic boys, but more full of love and joy than I could ever describe! And look at my beautiful Mama. But thats okay because she loves him and spoils him like only a Grandmother should. See these firemen boots? They are the only shoes John Davis will wear right now. I tried to snap a few pictures of just John Davis before the party, but most of them are just a big blur of movement. I know he is mine, but that little face still takes my breath away. I love these sweet pictures of John Davis with his cousin Riley. How cute are they together?! His mama and I were inseparable as cousins growing up and I hope Riley and John Davis are the exact same way. And would you just look at my Grandmother and how beautiful she is? We sure do love our Mamaw. It truly means the world to have us all together for special days like these. Candid Hubby… he loves birthday parties ; And my two beautiful and sweet Aunts! Love this picture of my Mama and my Mamaw. And I love this one with all three generations all in one picture. Tayler and I have pictures of us together at their age holding our baby dolls. Now here we are together holding our own real-life baby dolls! Just as the party was about over Fletcher finally woke up from his nap and came down to say hi to everyone. Look at that sweet sleepy face. The kids barely stopped the entire afternoon and they had so much fun playing in the bounce house. It came highly recommended from my sister in law who has the same one for her kids. It has held up great over time, and even though her kids are older now they still love to play on it. John Davis especially loves the slide and he must have gone down it at least times. Another bonus? The kiddos get ALL of their energy out! I love this picture of Daddy and John Davis. These were my best attempt at getting a picture of John Davis and Fletcher together. Photographing a toddler and a baby together is a challenge like no other! These sweet boys were worn out as the party was over. We had such a great time just sitting around and spending time with our family for the rest of the afternoon. I happened to look over and snap this picture of two sleepy boys holding hands watching TV together before they crashed for the night. And since Fletcher was finally awake, I had to take the opportunity to get a few pictures of him with the puppy dog and the snail. He will probably never get any hair because we rub on his head so much! Happy, Happy Birthday John Davis!!! We are so thankful God gave us the opportunity to be your Mama and Daddy. We love you more than we could ever put into words! Here are our four favorite baby boy shower gifts for An adorable Hospital Snuggle Set. Whether you bring one of our favorite baby shower gifts, or a unique gift of your own, continue to shower new parents with your love and support as baby boy grows! It takes a village, after all. They are lucky to have you in theirs! Received in extremely poor condition. Covered in dirty and sticky marks, holes and scuffs in the leather. Also the latch to lock it does not meet the hole correctly, so very poor quality. Looks like it's been kicked around a dirty warehouse. This was a gift so had to clean it up myself. Seller unhelpful in communication about a partial or full refund. The quality is super and they appear very hard wearing. The size of the large one is good and can easily cope with keeping larger items in. The smaller one is also a good size, larger than a jewellery box and therefore able to hold a good amount too. Beautifully designed, brilliant quality and lots of storage for items such as first pair of shoes, clothes, baby toys etc. Bought for my niece's first birthday - will be a lovely accessory for her bedroom. I bought these as a Baptismal present for a baby girl. There's plenty of room in the two pretty boxes to store all the cards one would want to keep; plus school reports; certificates etc etc etc plus a baby-book. Wonderful gift and prompt delivery. .As another reviewer has found, the boxes were delivered in poor condition with the faux leather scuffed. The trim wasn't stuck on properly and I could feel the sticky glue around the box. I had to chase the refund once I had sent it back and even then I did ot get the postage refunded. Reviewed in the United States on Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 27 August Not Wonderful i had to return this item as it was not in a great condition to give as a gift. Well made and a good size. The door chimes, the tall figure of Sinister stepping inside, sans disguise. As himself; cloak dispensed with in favour of a cloak of feathers that sit tight-tight to his back. Anyone about? Nikki Hawkins has posed: It is a nice and sunny day in Sunnydale, and Nikki is out roaming the town because she can be. At least today she's without her robot companion, because Squishy doesn't so well for long periods of time in hot weather. Did someone say slurpee? Nikki has one of those! Then she wanders - as a Nikki does - until she finds the Magic Box, and since it's earlier in the day and she doesn't see anyone familiar outside, she walks up the steps and peeks inside. She eyes the Feathered Man tm for a moment and then decidedly side-steps away from him and just begins walking around. Cause all in all she's a perfectly normal young adult who likes to shop around. And sip on a slurpee. It's not until she opens her mouth that she may prove otherwise. Mercy Thompson has posed: The chiming of the door has a way of getting attention. It might not be the attention that's being particularly sought out, but it's still attention. From out of the back room of the shop is where Mercy quietly steps, a mug of something steaming held in her left hand. A smile comes to tug at the corners of her lips, and she gives a small nod of greeting. Her black hair is caught in her typical pigtails, though they seem a bit frayed simply from having been in for hours already. She wears a pair of blue jean shorts that, from their cut off edges, were once jeans. Her usual tan steel-toed boots are on her feet, and she wears a blue t-shirt with a cartoonish white VW beetle putt-putting across the front of it. There's a glance given towards the young woman that she doesn't know, and her attention shifts back to Sinister. Wait, do I know you? Sinister looks to Mercy as the woman exits the back, gesturing open palmed across himself at Nikki. With a icey drink? I am not having an archangel induced flashback? Ahh, hello Mercy.Nikki Hawkins has posed: When she hears the name 'Squishy', Nikki turns her attention towards the Feathered Man tm and upon seeing his face her eyes go wide. Nikki saw the mudmonster! Red-eyed Man tm was trying to squish things! Nikki and Squishy made an escape. It was weird. She's right here. Why is he asking if she is real? Mercy Thompson has posed: "Squishy? Who's Squishy? I suppose a Squishy could be a what," she adds, one of her eyebrows quirking slightly. She tilts her head a touch to one side, looking over towards the young woman with the Slurpee and then back to Sinister. And she blinks. Mercy glances towards the young woman and then back to Sinister. Why would you think that you're having an archangel induced flashback? She lifts her mug of tea to take a sip of it. Sinister has posed: "Yeeees, I think so. I mean, I'm not obsessed with anything unusual and.No more mud monsters for now, they dissipated when the police opened fire. Just a moment. He holds up a hand to Mercy, pinching the bridge of his nose and pressing at his eyes with the other. A rather old romanian magician made mud monster golems, but the police got called, because.Got shot. I think miss Nikki fled and there was a tiny rolly robot called Squishy. Did I get that all correct, more or less? He lets the wings relax then; they shuffle as they unfurl enough to LOOK like wings and settle. Nikki Hawkins has posed: Nikki tilts her head one way and then the other before giving a nod of her head and then she's distracted by something shiny. When she hears Nathaniel speak again, she looks back up and seems to look confused. Nikki and Squishy must have left before they came. He doesn't do well in the heat, so Nikki left him at home today. But most people who meet Nikki meet Squishy too. Nikki'll bring him by sometime so Pigtail Lady can meet him! Another slurp of her icey drink is taken as she walks around, careful not to touch anything, just looking for the moment. Mercy Thompson has posed: There's a curious look towards the young woman with the frosty drink, and then Mercy turns her gaze back to Sinister. And she blinks, caught a touch off guard by something he says. I heard a brief mention on the news about. They didn't give details, but the reporter mentioned that shots had been fired," she says softly. Or perhaps something cold to drink? The cold drink might be more welcome on a day like today. She gives a slower sort of nod at the explanation that he offers to encompass the mudmonsters and other occurrences of the same night. If she didn't know about his healing ability then she'd have been concerned about him getting shot. Mercy's attention shifts to Nikki at the explanation about Squishy. That's cool. It sounds like he could maybe benefit from some type of improved cooling system, if the heat is a problem. But that's just a guess on my part," she says, a thoughtful tone to her voice. Then a smile tugs at the corners of her lips. You can call me Mercy, if you like," she offers with a bit of a nod. Sinister has posed: "I guess yes, that was that night. Shots fired," Sinister snorts at that, watching Mercy interact with NIkki now, studying the pair of women. Multiple shots, shot multiple times. But there we go. But you know, I can do that myself.A clunk has him wincing, ".Maybe he needs a cooling system. Nikki needs to find more parts so she can make adjustments to Squishy. Still sipping on her slurpee, she then manages her way to where some books are in shelves and she busies herself with looking those over for a moment. Nikki is Nikki. The Red-Eyed Man hasn't given Nikki a name yet.Nikki calls him Stoop Man. And Romanian Man too. He helped Nikki get some stuff out of a dumpster once. It's why she likes it and keeps coming back. But this is her first time inside. One of her eyebrows quirks up as she turns back to face him, studying him for a moment before giving a nod. The clunk has her turning her head to look in the direction of the back room, but since it does't sound like anything broke, her attention returns back to him. And to the young woman. Mercy gives a nod. And a cooling system would be a good idea for him, if he minds the heat. Then he could keep you company even when it's hot out. It'll get hotter, later in the summer," she comments, her tone thoughtful. Then she tilts her head a touch to one side. She lifts her mug, taking a sip of her tea and stepping closer to where Sinister has settled, drawing out a seat to settle into. One that gives her a vantage of the shop. She isn't entirely sure who the others are that Nikki has met, given the unusual names that she gives them. Sinister has posed: "Oh, yes, I do beg your pardon, I was out of my head when we met," Sinister looks at Mercy with an incline of his head, "polite but unnecessary, just this once. The kettle whistles to boiling and clicks, the sound of pouring water follows and a cup floats out from the kitchenette, steaming as it floats on in to settle infront of him. If there's a hard to source part, please -do- let me know. Squishy needs a cooling system. Nikki hasn't found a good cooling system. They're really expensive even at market costs. Nikki might get one after her next tournament. Something titled 'Magick for Beginners', which she flips through a little bit. She totally misses the floating cup that comes from the kitchen to Sinister. Red-Eyed man is also Nathaniel. Nikki will try to remember that but sometimes she's bad at remembering real names which is why she gives nicknames. It's fun. But she's running out of pieces to make go boom. She lifts her tea to take a sip of it, then glances towards the tea as it floats over to come to rest in front of him. One of her eyebrows raises, and then she gives a nod, her chin ducking a touch. There's been a higher amount of drop-in work at the garage last week, so the work on the engine for the Rabbit hasn't gone as quickly as what I'd expected, but it's getting there," she says, a smile returning to her features. Her attention turns to Nikki, and she gives a small nod. Would something like an air conditioning system from a vehicle be able to be modified to fit and work? Sinister has posed: "Compressor. Miniature one, from the higher end Beemers and Mercs ought to do it, modified with some work. Might need to load a cannister of freon, but that's the poor man's conditioning," Sinister murmurs, sipping the piping hot tea as he lifts it with his hands. A sidelong look is shot to Mercy and he inclines his head oh-so-gently, sipping again. Worry actually, given I'm.It felt good to confess, Mercy. There's the hydrolic system that makes him move.Seems she really knows her stuff, even if she comes off sounding like she's not got a lot of brains in her head. The mainframe can't handle the intake though, and only processes like five commands a second which isn't something Nikki wants. If Nikki is going to impress anyone, she wants it to be perfect.Stuff is dangerous.Nikki just doesn't have the means to do all of that. She's working on it though. It all starts coming together into more cohesive sentences. Mercy Thompson has posed: There's a thoughtful expression that creeps to Mercy's features at Sinister's mention of where the compressor might be sourced from, and she finds herself giving a slow nod. Compressor, that is," she says in a thoughtful tone. She ducks her chin slightly. I didn't mean to cause you any sort of worry over the matter. I would have let you know the last time that I saw you, but I became a bit.She studies him for a moment, and then she gives a small nod. Perhaps they're not wrong," she says softly. She has her own truths to tell that she's been keeping secret, or that she thinks she's been keeping secret, at any rate. Her gaze lingers on him for a moment, and then she looks over to Nikki, studying the young woman. Similar to a radiator in a vehicle, sort of," she muses, a thoughtful tone to her voice. Sinister has posed: Sinister opens his mouth, closes it several times, the speech he might have given cut short by second thoughts. He looks to both women with this though, the one that hides things that he's at least partially aware of and the enthusiastic roboteer and ends up frowning to the point of it almost being a scowl. His forehead is rubbed, his tea covetted whilst he works his way through whatever this is. He looks annoyed, though not at them, more some nebulous thing that might be himself. Well, they're both mechanics. Clicking his fingers a circle of electricity manifests beside him as it is want to do and a metallic tentacle dips in, setting a cube on the table of the magic shop. He taps it and it goes through a series of contortions along a pythagorean configuration, folding smaller and smaller into a different shape, until he has a heavy wrench. He gestures at it, for Mercy's benefit. He then taps it again and it unfolds, then breaks apart into tiny triangles. Nikki Hawkins has posed: Nikki looks between the two for a moment before figuring her icey drink is a bit more interesting than the topic of conversation that she's not really a part of anyway. She's just a normal human, there's nothing about her that can sense anything, or feel anything, or has any sort of way to know that someone is a little on the irritated side. Even social cues fail her but that's because she's got a mental disorder that she's never been tested for. So when Sinister does that thing with a circle of electricity and pulls out some cube with a metallic tentacle, her eyes go wide and she skitters from the table. Her chair knocks over and she almost looses her slushie. What's the doctor doing?! Mercy Thompson has posed: There's a significant moment whilst Nathaniel is doing a goldfish impression in which Mercy waits for the words to come from him. And then they don't. She tilts her head a touch to one side, and she lifts her mug of tea to take a sip from it. She watches him, and watches his expression shift from frown to near scowl. She shifts her position slightly, crossing one of her legs over the other at the knee. Perhaps a touch wary, but annoyed powerful males tend to invoke that sort of thing. One of her eyebrows quirks up as the ring of electricity manifests, and there's the mechanical tentacle that comes out of it. Her attention is caught by that, secured on it, and then once it's gone, her gaze slips to the cube. She looks to Nikki, and a smile touches her lips. Then she looks back to Nathaniel. This seems to be a familiar thing to Sinister as he swings his head over toward Nikki, fixing her with that solid red regard for a moment or two, then away. Well, Mercy will sense he bristles, but contains it and bites it down. But odder perhaps is not treating this as a situation where someone won't understand. It takes a lot of energy, but I've mastered the power of quantum singularity and Tony Stark did wonders for zero-point energy. That's been around elsewhere for a while. What that allows me to do, is by the electric signals of my brain, I can activate wormhole gates to create teleport holes from the location of my installations, to where I currently am, punching through by creating molecular symmetry between this ring here and that ring there, opening a hole. Quantum nanotech is adaptive and can be whatever you instruct it to be. THe processors however. They end up being triple parallel, because of the design and will greatly enhance your ability to instill commands in Squishy. Have fun figuring them out. She tilts her head for a moment, taking in all that he's saying, and the name that he drops. It should be blocked by the skull and the flesh. Tony Stark manipulates things with his arc reactor. Those little triangles are pushed towards the chair Nikki toppled over. A chair which she stands back up and slowly sits back down on. She reaches for one of the triangles and picks it up, looking it over a bit. He'd need a lot of upgrades. But Nikki might try it on a different robot she's been working on.She's still way totally freaked out, yet similarly compelled by the tech. He's different. And different isn't always accepted. And not being accepted can do that to a person. To Nathaniel, she smiles, something understanding and reassuring in the expression. She lifts her tea, and she takes a sip of it, as calm as one might please. She shifts her weight slightly, sitting forward a bit, intrigued and curious. That's pretty incredible," she says softly, after he's explained, a bit of wonder in her voice. It's an amazing thing to see. It's kind of a combination of technology and mechanics, to the way her brain sees it, which may or may not be entirely accurate. She watches the triangles separate before they're pushed towards Nikki. Her attention shifts to Nikki, and she gives a small shake of her head. Sinister has posed: And lo and behold, there's a little smile from Sin. A fleeting thing, born of gratitude, but still weighted down with bristle, so that it's shelf life isn't nearly as long as it should've been. I have functional wings, I can make shoes dance, squish trashcans at range, and I'm the colour of a bleached A-4 peice of paper. If you're going to react, my dear, at least react unilaterally. Lovely girl Alice was, met her over tea. Most of the nanotech is snatched up, but he does poke a single triangle of it toward Mercy, too. Just in case she wants to fiddle with making Herbie a smart car. He then heads out without a further word.

Perfect for the dog park, running errands, around the house, or really anywhere you please! The design can also be used on totes, hats, and more. However, avoid retractable leashes whenever possible: Although they seem easier during walks, retractable leashes are actually dangerous, especially for young puppies who are still getting the hang of walking on a leash. Keep your puppy on a regular leash with a maximum of six feet of space between you both. Snowy Pines recommends slip leads: Slip leads are what puppies are taught to walk on from a young age at Snowy Pines, since they give you as the walker more control over the puppy as he gets the hang of normal walks. You can also opt for an embroidered collar if your puppy seems bothered by the noise or extra weight of the dog tags. Many puppy owners choose embroidered collars since dog tags should be removed when the puppy is left alone as they can pose a hazard. You can stick with a small food and water bowl. Puppy Food Your puppy will need high-quality food to grow strong! In most cases, this means his own dog crate. A good dog crate should be large enough for him to stand up, turn around, and lay down comfortably. You can choose a crate that expands as it grows to save money in the long run. Most of our puppies at Snowy Pines will do well in a inch wire kennel with a divider that you can remove once he gets bigger. Be sure to check out our dog bed reviews too! Remember that most toys should not be left alone with your puppy since unsupervised playtime can lead to a choking or blockage incident. Image Source Puzzle Toys Puzzle toys keep your pup mentally stimulated while they also have fun. Additionally, these interactive toys provide help with weight management, satisfy natural hunting instincts, and even relieve feelings of stress or anxiety. These toys can easily become a comfort item and help curb any potential anxiety as well. Chase Toys Golden puppies need to have regular exercise. Chase toys are simple things you can buy at any pet store, like ropes and balls, but some interactive chew toys are designed to add a little zing to your daily play routines. So, for example, if your puppy just woke up from his nap and pottied, but you need to do laundry and load the dishwasher, the exercise pen is a perfect solution. It enables your pup to enjoy safe solo playtime. Training Treats Food is a powerful reinforcer , so treats are incredibly beneficial in the early stages of puppy training. Try offering him a treat when he potties outside or uses a chew toy. Quick Tip: The treat should be small and chewy so that he can eat it fast and keep his attention on you! With the proper carpet cleaner and enzyme spray, you can quickly combat any potty mistakes anywhere in the house. Dog Shampoo and Conditioner The Retriever family has a unique, double-layered coat designed to keep them warm in winter and cool in summer. It also dries quickly after becoming wet. It is such an impressive coat that it is essentially self-cleaning when it comes to dirt and debris. Pooper Scooper and Poop Bags A pooper scooper is a handy tool that many homeowners with yards find essential. Instead of bending down every time your pup goes, you can use a pooper scooper to clutch onto the waste and quickly throw it in your outside garbage bin. They are also expected as a common courtesy to other people outside. So before your English Cream Golden puppy comes home, be sure that your home, backyard, and car are puppy-safe and puppy-proofed. In the Home: Image Source Keep the toilet lid closed. Believe it or not, open toilet lids have the potential to be drowning hazards. Secure medicine and cleaning products. Keep these products high up or use childproof locks and latches on lower cabinets. Garbage should be kept lidded and secure. Lidded, secured bins are the best type of garbage cans you can have with a young puppy. Not only do you want to avoid spilled garbage, but a locked lid will prevent your puppy from getting into any potential hazards. Hide electrical cords and blind cords. Exposed electrical cords and long blind cords can prove to be fatal for curious puppies. Keep electrical cords hidden away, buy cord wraps to keep them safely covered, and be sure that your blind cords are tied high and inaccessible. Invest in a pet or baby gate. Gates can be used for doorways or staircases to keep your puppy away from certain areas of the house. In the Backyard: Be careful of plants and landscaping that may be poisonous or dangerous. Many plants are toxic to dogs , so be sure to triple-check if any are growing in your yard. Secure your yard with fencing and add gates around bodies of water. If you plan to let your puppy roam freely in your backyard, you should have complete fencing with no puppy-sized gaps around the perimeter of the property. If you have any ponds or pools, block them off with appropriate fencing to avoid accidental drowning. Keep your yard landscaped and manicured. Long grass and brushy areas can invite ticks, which can be extremely dangerous if any potential bites are not discovered early on. Generally speaking, your grass should not be higher than a couple of inches and potentially even shorter while your puppy is still young. In the Car: Image Source Move any chewable items and lock loose items in the glovebox. Confine your puppy in one area of the vehicle, like the backseat. Keeping your puppy confined to one area of the car is safe for everyone. Many puppy parents choose harness seat belts and car seats for younger dogs, while older dogs are big enough to safely sit in the back seat or trunk with cargo barriers. As your Golden Retriever gets older, you may find yourself opting for different barrier methods that will better suit his size. Kennel your puppy while in the car. Crating your puppy is the safest mode of transportation while in the car. Deciding on a Daily Routine Like children, puppies thrive on a fixed routine because an orderly one instills structure and confidence. Sticking to a schedule can also help reinforce potty training and prevent behavioral issues , like separation anxiety and barking or whining. Think of a schedule that works best for your puppy, which should include: Feeding: Pick out regular meal times and stick to them as closely as possible. Golden Retriever puppies will need three daily feedings until they are six months old. After that, stick to feeding twice a day at the same time each day. Fixed meal times will help you predict when your puppy needs to potty each day, which better ensures easier potty training. Scheduled potty breaks: Take your puppy out to the yard or on a walk to potty immediately after a meal and after they wake up to enforce a schedule that will help with house training. Playtime and exercise: Playing and mental stimulation are key to a happy puppyhood. Even though they will mellow out in personality as they become adults, Retriever puppies are high energy! Place the dog crate in a quiet part of the house since we kennel train at Snowy Pines, and it helps ensure their safety and comfort. And now is the exciting part: Your puppy is finally home! But now what? Puppy Socialization Socialization is vital for young puppies, especially between 8 to 16 weeks of age: A well-socialized puppy will grow into a happy and confident adult that feels secure in various situations. You can also invite friends and family over to meet the puppy. In this case, more is always merrier! To help your puppy feel comfortable around humans in general, expose him to different types of people when he is still young. We also recommend holding off on public settings like dog parks until your puppy is settled into his new home and routine so as to not overwhelm him. Once your puppy is vaccinated, you can consider signing him up for puppy socialization classes. These classes, alongside training courses, can help prepare your pup for a long walk or a day at doggy day camp. Training Techniques Training is just as essential as early socialization. He may become disruptive and exhibit poor behaviors like jumping on visitors, chewing on furniture, and barking incessantly, among other frustrating challenges. Your puppy may also struggle with separation anxiety. They will comprehend basic commands and learn things such as his name, housebreaking, and early manners. They will be able to take on more advanced training and commands, and they should understand what good dog manners are. This age is essential when it comes to instilling how you want him to behave through adolescence. Puppies will begin teething at this point. Your new puppy might use anything possible to exercise his teeth, so you must start teaching him not to use your hand or furniture as chew toys. Anytime your puppy chews on something undesirable, have a toy nearby to put in his mouth instead. You can also try using bitter apple spray to deter biting and chewing on household items. Be firm but loving with clear, consistent commands and minute training sessions each day. Quick Tip: Keep in mind that at this age, this is when the key socialization period ends for your puppy: From this point forward, everything your puppy has learned will influence the way he behaves around people and other animals. While this is good, this age will also be a challenge because he will try to determine his ranking in the household, which can be frustrating when hormones play a role! Although spaying and neutering are standard for most breeds around six months old, studies have found that doing so for Golden Retrievers can actually increase the risk for joint disorders. Therefore, the standard for this breed has recently changed, and many vets suggest waiting to spay or neuter until 12 to 24 months. Training can be an overwhelming process, which is why many Golden puppy owners opt for working with a dog trainer or enrolling in training classes. Snowy Pines offers three levels of training when adopting one of their golden retrievers, which can save you tons of time and frustration in the long run. At your first checkup, you can also ask about getting your puppy microchipped! Read the full disclosure here. This comprehensive list covers all the essentials, plus some added extras. Food: Every dog needs food! See our puppy food guide for recommendations. Bowls: Your puppy is going to need something to eat that food from. Something to think about. Bedding: Your pup will need a comfortable bed to call their own. You can decide whether to choose a puppy-sized one or one that they can grown into. To avoid buying more than one crate, you can get one big enough to fit your adult golden and make it puppy-sized using dividers. Brushes: Get your puppy some brushes suitable for a longer-coated dog. The sooner you get pup used to being brushed, the easier it will be in the future. Toothbrush and toothpaste: These are daily essentials in your grooming routine. Be sure to choose a dog-specific toothpaste as the human stuff can be dangerous to canines. Treats: Essential for training. Pick high-value treats for when you really want to motivate your pup. Chew toys are essential to help direct chewing away from your belongings. Tug toys, balls to play fetch and treat-dispensing toys are also nice to have. Travel harness or dog guard: To keep your dog safe in the car. These are the main things you need to think about when puppy proofing your home. Put them up high or away in their proper place. Not only will it leave you out of pocket if your pup chews something expensive, many such items are also choking hazards. Be careful of plants: Make sure you remove any plants that are poisonous to dogs , both in your house and your garden. Common offenders include foxglove, wisteria and yew. Secure medicines and cleaning products: Both medicines and cleaning products can be highly toxic to dogs if ingested. Hide electrical cords: If a puppy sinks their teeth into an electrical cord, it can prove fatal. Try not to have electrical cords running across the room or out in the open where your puppy can get to them. If needs be, you can get cord concealers, cord wraps or even pvc pipes to secure them. Planning Appropriate Puppy Socialization Socialization, with both humans and other dogs plus other animals, if your new puppy is going to be around them , is one of the most important things to think about with your new puppy. A well-socialized puppy should turn into an adult dog who interacts well with all dogs and people, which makes your life so much easier as a dog-owner. It might sound a bit over the top, but it will stop your pup from getting confused or overstimulated and it sets some ground rules for the humans involved, too. Pick out regular meal times for your puppy and try to stick to them as closely as possible. Also take your puppy out into the garden on a schedule, as this will really help with toilet training. You can also schedule in training sessions, play sessions and, when your puppy is old enough, their daily walks. Learning How To Train Your Puppy You might think that training your new dog will be intuitive when you get them home, but dog training is a skill you learn, not one you just pick up as you go along. Once your puppy is old enough, group puppy training classes are an excellent idea. Not only will you learn more about training your pup, your dog will also get to socialize with other young canines. The ideal option is to have the puppy in the back seat in a car harness and have a passenger sit next to them, who can hold, pet and comfort them on the journey home. Some people forgo the harness altogether and have a passenger simply hold the puppy, wrapped in a blanket or towel. However, before you even get your puppy into the car, you should try to get them to relieve themself first , to avoid any toilet-based accidents on the journey home. Once you get your precious pup home, all that effort and preparation will have been worth it to give your new four-legged friend the best start in life. You May Also Like. We use the 8mm size for our dogs. Alvalley is a high quality brand for all lengths. For an adult dog, use an 8 mm or larger. For a young puppy, an 8 mm leash works fine, but I prefer the smaller 6 mm Alvalley Snap Lead one for ease of use when working at home. This size fits easily into the outside pocket of a treat bag. If going for a walk, use a more substantial leash such as the 8 mm Alvalley leash. For at-home use, a 6 mm collar is fine. I like to attach a snap lead permanently to a martingale collar for ease of use. The collar and leash can easily be slipped off and on as needed. Puppies and even some dogs like to chew the plastic ones. At 10 weeks of age, we are using very small bowls for ease of use during training. Golden Retrievers tend to act like they are starving and eat too fast, even at their correct weight. These bowls slow them down so that they will come closer to chewing their food than inhaling it. I like to use buckets instead of bowls for water. Puppies love to dig in their water which makes a mess out of it. Hang the bucket on the outside of the crate by the handle that is on the bucket. Then attach the clip for security by using only one side of the clip to attach the handle to the crate. Leave the other end of the clip just hanging. Never put water inside a crate with a dog. I recommend the 2-quart size for one or two big dogs. This size is also a good size for a puppy. I use two snaps to stabilize the bucket. Though wire crates usually have a divider so that you can size the crate down, we recommend that you go ahead and purchase a 24 inch wire crate along with the correct size for your dog when he is grown. Most puppies can use the 24 inch crates for about 2 months after they are weeks of age. It is also helpful to have a smaller crate when traveling. If you want this option with a Summer Brook puppy, you can have a small icrate shipped to our home address for you to pick up when you get here. The best size crate for adult girls is a 36X24X27 inch wire crate. For an adult boy, use either a 42X28X30 or 36X24X27 inch wire crate. We prefer wire crates in most cases because they give more ventilation and Golden Retrievers like it to be cool. Midwest Life Stages : These are heavy duty and come in both double or single door options. I prefer the crate with the double door because you will have the opportunity to use it turned sideways with the entrance on the side as well as the end. The Icrates are also two inches shorter and two inches narrower than the Life Stages crate. They are larger at the bottom than the top so they fit better in the back of an SUV or van. They are crash tested and have excellent safety records. These crates are a bit difficult to set up and take down so we only recommend them for those that want a crate that stays in a vehicle most of the time. They are perfect for families that take their dogs with them a lot and want a somewhat permanent fixture in their vehicle. This crate is very lightweight and sets up and folds down quickly and easily. We love these crates for motels and dog shows. Wood Crate Denhaus Townhaus : I recommend this crate if looks are important to you. This crate looks just like a nice end table. Though it was expensive, mine has held up well for several years. Crate Pad Primo Pads: These are my favorite crate pads. They are made of a heavy-duty vinyl and I have yet to have a dog chew one up. The vinyl is cool so that my dogs like them even in the summer. They come in a big variety of sizes so that they will fit your crate like a glove. These pads are not sold anywhere except from the manufacturer. Order your Primo Pads here. This is a raised cot-like bed that is cool and comfortable. There is a new Kuranda Bed that we have not tried ourselves but it looks amazing. It is a raised cot like the aluminum bed that we have loved for years but it is sized to fit perfectly into a crate! We have purchased both the aluminum as well as the less-expensive PVC Kuranda beds. Our aluminum beds still look brand new but our PVC beds are starting to warp a little after a few years. We like the Ballistic Nylon fabric which has held up for us for several years. The large is the correct size for both boy and girl Goldens. We have two of them and they are as comfortable as many human beds. We have the extra-large size but a large would be plenty big enough for a girl. At first, your puppy will have to be watched almost every minute when they are out of the crate or pen in order to establish good potty habits and also to teach them not to chew. Until you teach them otherwise, some puppies will try to chew everything, including the furniture and even the woodwork on the walls so I have found the pen to be a huge help. If you get a pen, you need to begin training your puppy not to jump on the sides right away. Never pet your puppy or let him out while he is jumping. Reward him for sitting. They open and close easily and in both directions. The Richell Pens look really super nice. They also can be set up as room dividers. We own at least a dozen sets of these pens and have used them in a large number of configurations. However, like most exercise pens, many puppies will eventually learn to climb or jump out of them. Families must be on top of training their puppy not to jump on the sides. Unlike the Richell pen, most, if not all pens have doors that open in only one direction. If you get one of these pens, set your pen up so that the door opens to the outside. If you are getting your puppy from a breeder other than Summer Brook, plastic pens are a good option for a 7 to 10 week old puppy. It is easier to house train if you start off not allowing your puppy in too large of an area. It also has the added convenience of being able to be easily removed by simply pushing a button that locks it in place. However, this gate must be mounted to the wall. Baby Gates that are Mobile Regalo Extra WideSpan Walkthrough Safety Gate : This gate can span a space inches For a pressure-mounted gate, the Regalo gates do very well and are a good simple solution if you only want a gate for a few months until your puppy is house-trained and can be given the full run of the house. However, understand that many puppies cannot be totally trusted in large areas until they are over 6 months of age. It takes some until they are close to a year. Doggy Door Why to Use a Doggy Door If you are able to put a doggy door in, this is by far the easiest way to house-train a puppy. Also, it provides an ideal way to leave a dog when they have to be alone. I teach our puppies to use a doggy door before they go home. In the last days before they go home, I section off a small area inside next to our kitchen with free access to a doggy door that leads to our side yard. When I keep a puppy past 8 weeks, I gradually increase the size area of the indoor area as they show dependability. I reserve the times when they are free in the house to the 30 minutes right after they have pottied. We highly recommend it. If you have a particularly aggressive chewer then I would buy the Extreme Kong but if your dog is average then I would use a Classic Kong. Bob-a-lot : You can fill this toy with a lot of food; the dog has to work at getting the food out by pushing it around. JW Pet has other great toys too. If you have a particularly aggressive chewer then I would buy the Extreme Kong but if your dog is an average chewer then I would use a Classic Kong. Puppies love them and they keep our puppies happy in their crates. Toys for Month Old Puppies.
