That said, while it can be done, I strongly urge anyone who lives in an apartment to think carefully about how much time and work it can be to keep a large, working dog in an apartment. I will not sell a puppy to anyone who lives in an apartment and leaves the dog home alone all day. At least one person needs to be home during the day. The dog needs to be taken outside to play at least once a day and taken for potty breaks many times EVERY day. Also, please check with your apartments rules on German Shepherds; some complexes do not allow them. New strains of the Parvo Virus are abundant and it is my job to keep puppies safe. I use a high titer Parvo Vaccine at 4 weeks but this may not protect all puppies. So please understand as much as you would like to visit with your puppies as they grow I can no longer allow this until they are 7 weeks. I will send out emails with pictures or videos weekly. No outside dogs are allowed at anytime. Thank you for understanding how important it is for me to keep the puppies safe. If you do visit other breeders, please do so on a different day that you visit. Von Ward Kennels will take back any puppy at any time in their lives if their owners can no longer care for them. Please never take a Von Wards dog to a shelter if you can no longer keep them. While most of our dogs are larger than the standard, we do have a couple of breeding females that are within standard.

Deworming German Shepherds - How Often? Puppies are entirely different however. Also, I deworm my dogs myself. I get the wormer I use from my vet for my particular German Shepherd because it is based on weight of the dog and then I administer it myself. The wormer I use is called Panacur. It comes from the vet in a liquid form and you administer it once a day for 3 days in a row. You can put it on their food or just directly into their mouths which is what I do and you're done. Many vets will give it to you as 3 separate dosages in 3 different syringes all ready to go 1 dosage per syringe but I usually just get it all in one bottle, and 3 empty syringes and then measure it out myself before I give it - but either way is fine. I like it especially because it is good to get rid of lots of different worms all at once such as; hookworms, roundworms, tapeworms and whipworms - and most other wormers on the market only address hookworms and roundworms. So one treatment of the 3 doses and you're done for 6 months! And most GSDs do not seem to have an issue with the taste either. But if you don't want to get the Panacur from your vet you can also order a wormer called Panacur C - Safeguard that is basically the same thing only in dry form to give your dogs. If you're using Safeguard to worm your dog, you can mix up the powder with a small amount of canned dog food to make sure that the dog takes it all. Again, it's a once a day dosage for 3 days in a row. And it's important to remember that if you decide to buy the powder form of Panacur Safeguard or any other brand that you buy more than your GSD weighs - meaning that if your GSD weighs 74 pounds that you buy 80 pounds worth, or if your GSD weighs that you buy enough for a pound dog. So you'll probably have to buy several packets to add up enough wormer to meet your GSDs weight requirements. It's better to give your dog enough wormer to treat a slightly larger dog than not to give enough to treat the full weight of your dog because dogs seldom weigh an exact 70, 80, or 90 pounds. Just ask your vet if you have any further questions about panacur. And if you want to see the liquid Panacur that I was talking about above, here is a video that you can watch all about that too to give you a better idea about what I am talking about. Deworming Your German Shepherd Dog. Do all puppies have worms? Intestinal parasites are common in all puppies. Roundworms are present in almost all newborn puppies. Puppies can become infected with parasites before they are born or later through the mother's milk. Your pup has been wormed every two weeks from the age of two weeks. Modern de - worming preparations are safe however please use a good quality all wormer for it to be effective Drontal allwormer or Nexgard Spectra. These can be found in any Pet Shop. We recommend after you take your German Shepherd puppy home that you worm your puppy every two weeks until the pup is 14 weeks and then every 3 months for the rest of your pup's life. It is important that the medication is repeated since it is usually only the adult worms that are killed. Tapeworms are the most common intestinal parasites of dogs. Puppies become infected with them when they swallow fleas; the eggs of the tapeworm live inside the flea. When the puppy chews or licks its skin as a flea bites, the flea may be swallowed. The flea is digested within the dog's intestine; the tapeworm hatches and then anchors itself to the intestinal lining. Therefore, exposure to fleas may result in a new infection; this can occur in as little as two weeks, so please keep your puppy flea free. A worming certificate is included in your take home folder with the dates to worm your puppy, when you buy your German Shepherd puppy from us. Despite your day-long care, as a responsible dog owner, you may wonder about how your dog can get these notorious worms. There are a lot of ways by which your lovely dog can get worms. Among them, some of the most probable reasons are: From the mother Your dog can easily get worms like roundworms from their affected mum. In this case, your pup will be born with worms. These worms can produce serious infections in young puppies. Also, dogs can be infected with worms while drinking milk from infected mothers. Eating contaminated meat German Shepherds are hunting dogs and they like to scavenge occasionally. Due to their natural hunting behavior, your dog could chase and eat other infected animals like birds, rodents, or other small animals. Eating worm eggs Roundworm eggs are frequently found in the outside soils and these eggs can remain active for several months after laying. An adult roundworm female can lay near about eggs per day. While roaming outside, your dog can easily ingest those eggs or bring those eggs into your home and contaminate others. Mosquito bite Heartworm eggs of dogs can easily pass from one infected dog to another healthy dog through blood-sucking vectors like mosquitoes. From fleas Fleas help carry the larvae of tapeworms during grooming , and can infect other healthy dogs. During grooming Usually roundworm eggs get attached to the coat of your dog. While grooming , your dog may swallow the eggs or larvae of worms and become infected with roundworm infection. Eating raw or contaminated food also puts your dog at a great risk of having worm infestation. Types of Parasites in Dogs Your German Shepherd can get a variety of worms, such as roundworm, heartworm, hookworm, flatworms, flukes, pinworms, etc. They are usually considered external parasites when in the soil or water. After ingestion, they act as an internal parasite and produce significant symptoms. Toxocara canis and Toxascaris leinina are the two most common roundworms in dogs. Hookworms These are smaller than the roundworm and look like a thread. They actually live in the intestine of your dog and attach to the wall of the intestine and suck blood. Ancylostoma caninum or Ancylostoma brazilienseis are the most common hookworm of dog. Heartworm Dirofilaria immitis, a small threadlike worm can block the major artery in the heart which leads to various organ failures, and ultimately death if your dog is left untreated. Ringworm This refers to a fungal infection that produces significant lesions such as inflamed, red, swollen patches over the skin. This is mostly caused by fungus Microsporum canis. Whipworm This includes Trichuris vulpis, a long-necked worm that attaches to the intestinal wall and feeds on nutrients from the blood. No matter what type of worm is infecting your dog, you always need to see a veterinarian right away. When in doubt, go see your vet ASAP as time is crucial when this happens. Symptoms of Worms in Dogs After having worm infestation, your German Shepherd can display a number of symptoms depending upon the load and severity of the infection. The most common symptoms of worm infestation may include the following: Diarrhea. Some treatments for worms will clearly state they are for all forms of worms, whereas others may only treat a specific type of infection. You will also need to read the label to ensure what age and size of dog the deworming treatment is suitable for, as some may only be for smaller dogs or puppies, and others for larger breeds. Some dewormers may also be intended to be used on a regular basis to be effective, whereas others may be intended for when an infection has already taken hold. Dog Worming Tablets vs Powder Different worming medicines use altering forms of delivery such as deworming tablets for dogs that can be hidden in food or regular tablets that can be crushed into food instead. Whipworms Whipworms rarely cause the types of serious problems that roundworms do, but they can be very unpleasant for dogs. Unfortunately, whipworms do not pass very many eggs, so they can be tough to positively identify when analyzing stool samples. They typically look like a long hair, although one end appears larger than the other. The two most common symptoms associated with whipworm infestations include weight loss and mucus-covered stools. Hookworms Hookworms derive their name from their sharp mouth parts, which enable them to cling to the wall of the small intestines. This can be very dangerous for dogs — particularly young puppies — as it can lead to anemia. Adult dogs can become sick from hookworms, but puppies occasionally die from severe infestations. Bloody stools, anemia, weight loss, and lethargy are some of the most common symptoms of hookworm infestations. Fortunately, hookworms are relatively easy to diagnose by conducting a fecal analysis. Tapeworms Tapeworms have an indirect lifecycle, which means that they require more than one type of host to complete their lifecycle. There are a variety of different tapeworm species, but those that most frequently afflict dogs utilize fleas as the intermediate host. Their larvae live inside the bodies of fleas, and when a dog inadvertently eats a flea while grooming himself, the tapeworm can be transmitted to his body. Tapeworms grow pretty large — many reach or exceed 6 inches in length. Unlike many other types of worms, which are likely to occur in high numbers, most tapeworm infestations will consist of very few individual worms. Protozoans Not all parasites that affect dogs are worms. There are a variety of different protozoans that can afflict dogs, but Coccidia and Giardia are two of the most common. Dogs can also contract cryptosporidium, which is a protozoan that can also sicken you and your family. Most protozoans cause broadly similar symptoms, including bloody diarrhea, weight loss, inappetence and a general failure to thrive. Protozoans can be very difficult to positively diagnose, as they are very small and only produce eggs periodically. Accordingly, multiple fecal examinations are often needed. Let us now look at how what are the major problems caused by worms in dogs. Worms can cause internal damage These worms generally live in the guts of your dog and can cause internal damage to your dog. This can lead to severe health complications and potentially harm your dog. Worms like roundworms can be dangerous The four main types of worms affecting your dog are roundworms, tapeworms, hookworms, and whipworms. Whipworms are dangerous for your dog and can cause abdominal problems. These include diarrhea, a bloated abdomen, and vomiting. Worms are more dangerous for young puppies While adult dogs can still deal with the problems of worms, they can cause more damage to young puppies. This is because the natural immune system of a puppy is much weaker than an adult dog. Worms can make your dog feel highly uncomfortable A dog that has worms in it will feel uncomfortable from within. This will make it ill-tempered, for sure. Worms can prove to be fatal Most of the time, you can treat worms with proper medication. But if left untreated, worms can prove fatal and cause serious damage. They can cause health conditions like anemia, gut blockage, and severe dehydration. Unfortunately, these conditions can also cause the death of your favorite pal. An experienced breeder that has bred the parents previously might have a better idea of the puppies that a particular coupling produces. However, the puppies will have short, dense coats that shed pretty heavily. The Staffy is generally regarded as a pretty healthy dog breed, except for a few conditions; the Boxer half of the mix is a different story. Boxers suffer from a host of genetic diseases. Ensure the breeder can provide you with relevant health clearance certificates for the parents, especially the Boxer. Staffy Boxer Temperament Both parent breeds are loyal and affectionate, and they thrive in a home where owners provide the time, love and care they need. The Staffy, in contrast to the Boxer, is known for its calm demeanour and lack of hyperactivity. However, training and socialisation are crucial and start from a young age. Neither dog does well, left alone for long periods. Staffy X Boxers do fine with other dogs providing they grow up with them. Neither the Staffy nor the Boxer is particularly territorial, although the Staffy seems to have picked up a reputation for aggression towards other dogs. Not wanting to sound like a broken record, but it does depend on the parents. The Boxer is the larger of the two dogs, and if the puppies favour the Boxer parent, they will be taller and have longer legs. However, as a rough guide, expect to see your puppy reach a height of between 17 to 23 inches. Final Thoughts A Bullboxer Staff cross will be a loving, loyal and protective family companion. You will need to show patience when training and only use reward-based training methods. The giant breed, which was related to the Mastiff as well as Bulldogs, was used to hunt tough animals like wild boar. When boar hunting lost its popularity, the Bullenbeiser was bred to be smaller and was used as a butcher dog and cattle dog. Butcher dogs were used for a range of tasks including pulling large carts that were heavily laden with meat. As such, while the modern Boxer is smaller than the original, it is still a strong and hardy breed. The Bullboxer Staff combines the strength of the Boxer with the equally formidable strength of the Staffordshire Bull Terrier. Boxers Get Their Name From the Boxing Sport Although there are no records to confirm or deny this, it is believed that the Boxer got its name from the way it fights. The Boxer stands on its hind legs and effectively boxes with its front legs. Playing with a Boxer means that you should get used to this kind of tussling and be prepared to take a few right hooks. This was due, in part, to its physical similarity to the Pit Bull. It was also due to being bred for fighting and baiting. Disreputable breeders and owners still fight the breed today, which makes choosing an honest breeder even more important. However, as well as being a loyal dog, the Staffie is known for having a calm demeanor. He will take most things, including new sights and sounds, in his stride and is rarely aggressive. He can be protective of his owner, but this is rarely exhibited as aggression. As such, we can assume a lot of characteristics will be similar to those of the parent breeds. Both breeds are loving and loyal, and they will flourish when given attention and love from their family. Although the Boxer has a reputation for being a bit daft and very energetic, the Staffie is calmer and less goofy. Both breeds require plenty of exercises, however, and they will require training, although they can be difficult to train, but for different reasons. Are These Dogs Good for Families? The Staffie will give unconditional love to children, and because he is calmer, he would be considered the better choice for families with children. The Boxer also tends to adore children, but he can be quite accident-prone because of his pent up energy. This can lead to accidents and injuries, with small children being especially prone to these accidents. Whether your Bullboxer Staff is lively or calm will depend on which parent breed he takes after, but he will not intentionally harm the children in his family. He will usually get along with other dogs, and he can be introduced to other dogs readily in any location. He is not prone to protecting his territory, either, so he should be relatively safe to introduce to other canine family members. However, no breed is the perfect choice for all potential owners, and before buying or adopting a Bullboxer Staff you should consider the following factors to determine whether he is right for you. Expect to feed up to three cups of food per day. The actual amount you feed will depend on the quality of the food and its calorific content. It will also depend on the dog itself. If your dog is lively and active, and he gets a lot of daily exercises, you are likely to have to feed the full amount to ensure that he has the energy. If he is more sedentary and does not get out for long runs, feed less. This is just as important as physical exercise. A bored dog full of energy can become a destructive and even an anti-social dog, whereas a tired dog is a good dog. You should still give him an occasional brushing because this will help remove dead hair. Weekly brushing helps prevent his hair from becoming knotted and matted. This is not only uncomfortable for your dog, but it can lead to hair and skin complaints that last for years. Your Bullboxer Staff will not require any hair cutting or trimming and you will not need to visit a professional groomer. You should not bathe your dog, except when it is necessary. If you bathe your dog too often, it removes the natural oil from their hair. This oil keeps their hair in good condition. It also protects the skin. Dental hygiene is as important for dogs as it is for people, and your dog will not be able to brush his own teeth. Start brushing when he is a puppy and do it three times a week. Sharp nails also tend to be more painful for owners, especially with a dog that is as bouncy and athletic as a Boxer. You will usually need to trim nails every month or two. If your dog walks on abrasive surfaces like concrete, every two months should be fine because his nails will be kept short naturally. He is prone to a number of genetic health conditions and illnesses. Feed your dog a good diet with the right concentration of protein, carbs, and fat, and ensure that they eat the right amount. Frenchies that carry only one LH gene have regular short coat, but they are still valuable for breeders. If such a Frenchie is bred to another carrier of the long hair gene, they are likely to produce fluffy puppies, although the chances of that are still quite low. Long-haired pups are only guaranteed if two visual fluffy French Bulldogs are bred together. Their size depends not only on genetics but on their lifestyle as well how many times you take them for a walk, do you have a backyard, do you have other dogs or pets and even the food that you give them. Our Golden Irish puppies tend to be darker in color. How'd we start? Growing up my wife's family raised Pekingese. She loved their dogs and the litters of puppies that came and went. We wanted our children to have a family dog and to share the puppy experience with them and so we chose to raise Golden Retrievers. My family had a Golden Retriever growing up. My wife always dreamed of having a Golden Retriever or Irish Setter. We got our first Golden in and named her Mandy. We had 4 wonderful children ages 7 to 17 and our lovely dog Mandy. Mandy went everywhere with us. We lived on acres along the Calapooia River where the children would explore with Mandy at their side. Our 2 boys were passionate about the outdoors and loved to hunt and wanted a specific dog to train. It wasnt hard to convince their mom, but took a little longer to convince me. But convince me they did. They chose a male and of course named him 'Big Red'. The boys did an amazing job training the 3 dogs. We had the 4 dogs and plenty time and attention to offer them with the energy and passion from the 4 children. Cody and Mandy had their first litter of puppies in .The puppies were all healthy and delightful. The experience was just as my wife remebered as a child and she was happy that our children were able to enjoy the same experience. It was rewarding to place the puppies in wonderful homes. The pleasure and excitment the families portrayed as they picked up their puppy was addicting. The friendships we gained were rich. Ginger, trained by Josiah, was the cleverest dog we ever had. We were planning to breed Ginger with Cody. In the summer of Ginger came into heat so we would put Ginger and Cody in seperate kennels, on a cement slab, when we went to town. We were waiting for her to be in midcycle to breed her. I came home at dusk, one night, and let her out and she immediatly disappeard. We ran for a flashlight and found her in Big Red's Kennel. Big Red was our Irish Setter. We were devastated and felt like we had failed as breeders. However, we found that the puppies were extremely smart and farther advanced as they aged compared to our Pure Goldens as puppies. They were much calmer than most Irish Setters, and were more athletic than most Golden Retrievers. We knew these dogs would be a hit, and they have been. The first families to contact us were families specifically looking for the mix. They shared their stories of growing up with Golden Irish Mixes. Over and Over we heard how they were the best family dog they ever had. Why we Continue The Golden Irish was not merely something stumbled on by accident. The original accident was precipitated by a years long love of both the Golden Retriever and the Irish Setter. I was fascinated with the grace and freedom that contrasted the Irish Setter from more conventional setters in the story. He, rather, romanticized the hunt as a thing natural to the dog and foreign to the dogs human companion. Big Red knew what he was doing when he hunted. Big Red was the master hunter and Danny was his mere apprentice. Irish Setters can be strong willed. They are intensely loving and loyal but they do not have the level of automatic obedience seen in some breeds. They are majestic animals who do require some work during training to reach their potential. Unfortunately, because as the world has urbanized, the required space for an Irish Setter to shine has become rare, and this magnificent breed has seen declining popularity. Irish Setters are creatures of the open fields and the ubiquity of automobiles has ensured open fields are rare. We are fortunate to live in an area of the country still rural enough to allow the Irish Setter to run. But even we have to find time and space to give our dogs this opportunity. After almost 20 years experience with both Goldens and Irishes I have concluded that the main character trait differentiating the Golden Retriever and Irish Setter is patience. The Golden Retriever was bred to patiently wait for the hunt. The Irish Setter was bred to go out and make the hunt happen. Both love to chase things. Both can have seemingly boundless energy. Both are loyal companions. The Golden Retriever will wait for the ball to be thrown and the Irish Setter will grab the ball and expect to be chased. The Irish Setter is proactively invoking the hunt, whereas the Golden Retriever is awaiting its arrival. We were no experts at first and have learned a lot in 20 years. It turns out the patience of the Golden Retriever tends to be inherited by the Hybrid making them more suitable for Urban environments. It also turns out that the grown dogs can be stunningly beautiful. We have improved our breeding over the years and no longer hesitantly advertise. Through our hard won experience we are able to consistently breed Golden Irishes to our own very high standards.
