The Golden Retriever has been an AKC-recognized breed since and was commonly used as a gun dog and for retrieving small game such as waterfowl, and for companionship. The Golden Retriever originated in the Scottish Highlands. The first Lord Tweedmouth, Dudley Majoribanks, is credited with developing the breed and keeping detailed records to create the ideal gun dog for the terrain. Great discipline and a gentle spirit make the Golden Retriever a perfect retrieval breed since the goal of this task is to bring the trophy back as undamaged as possible. Golden Retrievers first appeared in dog shows in at a British dog show. They also started appearing in the United States around the same time as they were brought across the Canadian border. They gained popularity with sport hunters and in general. Their popularity really took off in the s and they are consistently one of the most popular dog breeds. If you are not the sporting type, bringing a Golden Retriever into your family as a pet is just as rewarding because they are one of the most loyal and jovial breeds out there. One of the facts about Golden Retrievers is that they are the epitome of friendly and make fantastic family dogs. Golden Retrievers are considered one of the friendliest dog breeds. They tend to be good with kids, other dogs, other pets, and even strangers. Goldens love attention and they bond closely with their families. They are affectionate with them, and also just about everyone else. Although they do tend to get along with everyone, they love being around their favorite humans the most. They will bark to alert you and can end up barking a lot if you do not train your dog to stop barking early on. Golden Retrievers are highly adaptable dogs. They thrive in homes with yards where they can run. They can also adapt to apartment living as long as they get enough daily exercise, mental stimulation, and attention. These dogs do well in just about any climate, but are sensitive to heat. As one of the most affectionate dog breeds , they are not at all happy about being left alone for long periods of time. Although super-friendly and attention-loving, Goldens can also be sensitive to their surroundings; make sure they feel included, but have a quiet place to go if things get too noisy or overwhelming. Potential health concerns to be aware of in a Golden Retriever include progressive retinal atrophy, cataracts, elbow dysplasia , and hip dysplasia. Good breeding practices make a big difference in the health of puppies. Reputable breeders screen their dogs to avoid passing preventable issues to puppies. So, make sure you ask about the health and genetic history of the parents. You can also ask about any health tests or clearances that have been done. Goldens are considered one of the best dog breeds for first-time owners. They are highly trainable dogs that pick up on things quickly and are eager to please. These traits make them a good fit for owners of all experience levels. It also helps them excel at obedience competitions. As one of the smartest dog breeds , Golden Retrievers can get bored easily. Because they pick up things quickly, they can get bored with too much repetition in training. If your dog has mastered the command, move on to something more advanced or another activity. You can also enroll in puppy training classes for some variety in training and also some socialization. Golden Retrievers have a long double coat that will shed a little year-round and will be heavier twice a year as the seasons change. Brushing a few times a week and daily brushing during seasonal shedding along with a bath as needed is usually enough for at-home care. You will want to go to the dog groomer for a professional trim a few times a year, especially as the seasons change. Nail trims once or twice monthly keep nails from growing too long. Daily tooth brushing, along with cleanings at the vet when needed, is ideal. Golden Retrievers are one of the most active dog breeds. Daily walks plus some playtime, time to run, and other activities are usually enough to keep these dogs happy and healthy. But, they are high-energy dogs that will likely always be up for more activity if you are. Much like the Labrador , they also tend to have an extended puppyhood. They tend to start winding down a little around the age of 3 and settle into your lifestyle, but they will still be high-energy dogs that require a lot of daily activity. Goldens are known for being versatile and athletic dogs. They tend to love swimming. Once they are done growing and the vet clears them for higher-impact activities, you can try other things too. They are one of the dog breeds that make good running partners. You can also teach them how to play frisbee or play fetch. Training for dog sports is another good option. In addition to obedience, Golden Retrievers are well suited for agility, dock diving , rally, flyball, tracking, and more. Fully-grown Golden Retrievers usually stand inches tall and weigh pounds. Golden Retrievers generally live for years on average. With their intelligence, eagerness to please, and gentle disposition, Golden Retrievers are versatile working dogs. In addition to being one of the dog breeds that make the best service dogs , Goldens can be found working as emotional support dogs, certified therapy dogs, search and rescue dogs, military dogs, police dogs, animal actors, and more. Judges love his near perfect structure, breath taking movement and super kind personality as well! Way to go Einstein! Love this remarkable boy!! Building a trustworthy, capable, vigorous, and beastly Olde English Bulldogge is my lifestyle. My breeding program permeates my entire life and gives me purpose. Take a look around my site to see the Evolution Bulldogge difference. This is my story. The giant bulldog in the cartoons had a magnificent head, colossal chest, low, broad, heavy, and muscular body! Immediately Bulldogs became a massive fascination for me. The cartoons with bulldogs were by far my favorite. I would become a very excited kiddo each time a bulldog made a television appearance. This fascination grew into an obsession. Unfortunately, my first introduction to a real bulldog was a disappointment mixed with a strange sense of enthusiasm. My friend Mikey had a female English Bulldog at his house. She was tiny, chunky, super cute, and snorty. He showed me that when he nudged her chest with his shoe, she would grip it and snarl in rough play. Her bully mind was incredible, but her body was lacking. I really thought bulldogs were going to be how television portrayed them to children. There had to be something better. I was fifteen years old when I met Mr. Jack, an over-sized English Bulldog stud. I spent hours playing and wrestling around with him. He was a great bulldog, and he was reasonably similar to my giant cartoon bulldog dream. Unfortunately, he was not quite the icon of health or vigor I had hoped for, but I was completely hooked. I made a clear decision. I would become the greatest bulldog breeder in the world. My parents, however, put my dream as a bulldog breeder on hold. Over the next decade and a half, I spent countless hours and days researching genetics, anatomy, physiology, and biology. I was learning how to breed healthy versions of my beloved cartoon image bulldog. In my studies, I realized the English Bulldog is structurally limited in regards to health. I began looking at other bully breeds in an attempt to find a healthy bulldog that matched my vision. For many years my search came up lacking. By the time I reached this earth, bulldogs had become a gross mutation of their former selves. The bulldog of old- the courageous, capable, athletic, powerful bulldogs had long since become extinct. I become less enamored with the English Bulldog breed and more so interested in my image of what I felt a bulldog should be. But I did not Stop Searching. They were local, and the name in the olde tyme spelling piqued my Bulldog curiosity. I called and made an appointment to see what these Olde English Bulldogges were all about. I rushed right over to see this new promise of a better Bulldog. When I arrived, I saw the most superb Bulldog bitch that I had ever seen in my life! Bulldogs only moved that powerfully and quickly in the cartoons! I knew I was onto something with my brand new introduction to the Olde English Bulldogge. The sales pitch that the Olde English Bulldogge was healthy and capable sold me. Traveling around the country, I visited breeders of this amazing new breed and I bought up puppy after puppy. Dog after dog failed health and temperament tests. It quickly became evident that the Olde English Bulldogge breed also suffers from several of the same health issues which plague the English Bulldog. Compelled by obsession, I started all over, In spite of my losses. The lessons were expensive, in addition to well-received. Nevertheless, I searched tirelessly for Olde Bulldogges that would put me within reach of my ultimate goal of a bigger, better bulldog. Taking some significant losses, I realized getting what I wanted would mean creating it myself. Still obsessed with my dream, I kept searching and searching. With a few tastes here and there of what could be, I eventually stumbled upon a few exceptional dogs. As dogs finally started passing health testing, I could move forward. This small handful of quality dogs would lay the foundation for a solid breeding program. I began linebreeding my productions to make great family companion bulldogs that excel at protection. Evolution Bulldogges was born! Fast Forward a Bit… With multiple generations of tested and proven dogs, my main focus is to advance my Bulldogge breeding program consistently. My secondary focus is to help you get just the right Olde English Bulldogge puppy for you. Occasionally I have other puppies available who are not yet listed. When you purchase an Olde Bulldogge puppy from Evolution Bulldogges, you can be sure you are getting the highest quality Bulldogge puppy money can buy. If you are interested in learning about my Olde English Bulldogge kennel and breeding program or purchasing bulldog puppies from me, please feel free to contact me. I would love to hear from you and will help you in any way I can.

Like all things in life, breeding for health is simply a matter of priority. We are blind to many of the breed priorities that distract other breeders from improving the health of the English Bulldog. We focus on health and personality and very little else. We are not interested in winning a blue ribbon in the show ring. Rather, we test for things like elongated soft palates, narrow tracheas, stenotic nares, luxation in the patellar tendons, heart defects, cherry eye, optic cilia, entropion, ect. We focus and prioritize creating healthy bloodlines, therefore our bulldogs are typically much healthier than the breed as a whole. After breeding for health, what other priorities are you focused on? Our true desire is to create the perfect family bulldog. We also believe a bulldog bred for the correct personality is essential to the family unit as well. A Bruiser Bulldog is bred for intelligence and playfulness. We want our bulldogs to be full of personality and some quirk. We believe a full personality along with a little stubbornness is the true North star of the bulldog breed and is what makes the unique among other breeds. We look for these personality traits in our adult bulldogs and continue to create bloodlines that reflect these qualities. What are the steps of your adoption process if I am located in Colorado? Check out our available English Bulldog Puppies page. At times, we have available puppies but almost always have a waiting list as well. A quick look at our available puppies is the starting point to begin the process. Erica and Mitch of Bruiser Bulldogs are just that. They are experienced, ethical and quality breeders. I was referred to them by my friend that I trust after I saw their gorgeous healthy puppy. Our Puppy Primrose is the light of our lives! Bruisers was there to assist us every step of the way. We would highly recommend Bruisers Bulldogs to anyone looking for their own happy, healthy pup! Leah H. We were lucky to have come across Bruiser Bulldogs and even more so the fact that they were near our family and hometown made it even better. We have had Clementine Callie for four months now, and she is a wonderful dog. Her personality is amazing, and I think part of it is breeding and the other part is Erika and her family lovingly raising the puppies in their home with plenty of attention and snuggles. I also was impressed that, rather than send the puppies out right at 8 weeks, Erika kept ours for a few extra weeks because she was tiny and not read to leave her mom yet. It's that care that differentiates Bruisers from other breeders. Emily R. Erica was easy to work with thru the entire process from application to adopting and now beyond as we host our new family member, Chief. Her on-call support and willingness to provide open, honest advice to all of our questions and concerns continues to be appreciated. We would highly recommend Bruiser Bulldogs to anyone looking for an English Bulldog to join their family. Elizabeth W. Lady L. They are experienced, responsive and knowledgeable about all things bulldog related. They went above and beyond for us and are truly dedicated to all of their pups! We love our little girl so much and would recommend Bruiser to anyone looking for a healthy beautiful bully. Jonathan E. Erica and Mitch are trustworthy, excellent communicators, fair, passionate, and produce the best bulldogs. We were at the top of the waiting list for months and Erica reached out every litter to see if we were finally ready for a bulldog. When we were, she was very easy to work with. Her knowledge on bulldogs is outstanding. We had many questions on the process and she always knew what was best for the puppy. We've had Penny formerly Blair for two months and she is very healthy, energetic, playful, and sweet. She is great with other people and dogs. We are so happy with our pup. When we are ready for bulldog 2, we will only consider Bruiser Bulldogs. Mitch C. Bowser was born April and is an integral part of our family. When we were first exploring English Bulldog breeders our biggest concern was the overall health of the dogs. We decided to work with Erica at Bruiser Bulldogs because we liked their focus on improving the breeds breathing abilities and the fact that the puppies are raised within her family environment before coming home with their new owners. Bowser also breaths clearly and our vet was impressed with his overall health from the moment we brought him home. All that said we know English Bulldogs have a predisposition to many health issues and that his current health can not predict the future. With that In mind its important to start with a breeder that open to answer any of your questions as Erica has ours, and that strongly believes in improving the breeds overall health profile. Adam B. My sister ended up finding Bruiser Bulldogs and we knew right away that they were the breeder for us. In September we ended up driving 9 hours to pick up two Bruiser bulldog puppies- one for my husband and I and one for my mom. Jackson and Penelope have been nothing but a joy. They are both very athletic and healthy. They are also HUGE snugglers and always want to be with you. It is an absolute pleasure having these two bullies in our lives! Erica is very knowledgeable about the breed. She is very hands on throughout the process and is just overall a kind and honest person to work with. With all that being said I cannot recommend Bruiser Bulldogs enough! Collyn C. One of the reasons we chose Bruiser Bulldogs was due to the claims about breeding for health. During our first visit at our vet's office, he told us that our pup was one of the healthiest English bulldogs he had ever seen. He is healthy, happy and social. Would recommend to anyone. Christina S. We seen our dog on their website and sent them an Email. Mitch called us and personally walked us through the process and made sure we had the right dog for our family. We couldn't be happier when we picked up our dog Ramsey, Erica made sure we had everything we needed and then some. They are truly amazing people who breed truly amazing dogs! Jim T. Only interact with dogs that are safe and you know for sure will have positive reactions to your new German Shepherd. Forcing them will only make them develop stress and anxiety in new situations and with animals. Think quality, not quantity, when socializing your German Shepherd. There are tons of new things your dog needs to get comfortable with. Use treats and positive encouragement when they investigate a new situation with confidence. Train daily. Make it fun. Punishment will only cause your dog to fear you and increase anxiety. Crouch down to offer them a gentle scratch and pet. This connects their name to paying attention to you and marks you as a positive leader, which is important for obedience training and living with their new family. Always work on rewarding good behavior instead of punishing bad behavior. The goal is to build trust in the first few weeks and months that you have your new dog to create a bond. And dogs are actually happier when they are trained rspca. Keep the sessions short, but have multiple training sessions throughout the day. Never end training on a bad note. For example, give them a command they know for sure so they finish with success. Read this guide to learn all about the basics of proper German Shepherd obedience training , including a helpful training schedule and the foundation commands. Be prepared for chewing by offering the right options. Biting and chewing are natural instincts for dogs and puppies. These actions provide them with opportunities to investigate the different amounts of pressure to use in relation to the purpose of their biting. Your job as their new owner is to help your pup understand and educate them on what is appropriate to bite, nip, and chew. This teaches them your signal and cue. They should let go or look a bit startled. Follow their release with praise or a tasty treat when your dog stops the unwanted behavior. Do NOT physically punish your dog! Instead, redirect them to a proper chew toy. Sometimes puppies teethe and their gums are sore and need something to chew. Other times adult German Shepherds have a desire and natural urge to bite for relaxation and to reduce anxiety. Only use safe, non-toxic chew toys, which are found listed here, in the best strong chew toys for German Shepherds to avoid boredom. Avoid accidents by managing the home environment. Create a set routine and schedule and stick to it to avoid accidents and train your puppy faster. Say hello to your new sloppy family member… They not only shed everywhere but also dump water out when drinking, spill their food, and… Have total disrespect for your carpets! You must have them in a secure area or watch them all the time to avoid any accidents. No matter what you will clean up some kind of bodily function when owning a German Shepherd. So, do yourself a favor and stock up on pet stain and odor remover! Use food-dispensing toys and slow feeders to keep them at a healthy weight. This is a food toy called a Kong Wobbler. Keep to a schedule so that you can control their food intake and watch their weight. Instead, use rubber toys in which you place part of their food to help control their voracious eating. I like to use a Kong Wobbler for both puppies and adults. Even better? Puppies are more responsive to the Ignore method of training. As a new German Shepherd owner, you might think you need to appease your dog all the time or give in to their excessive attention-seeking. In my experience, this is one of the most effective training methods that you can use when owning a German Shepherd. Put simply, here are the basics to use the Ignore method of training: You ignore the behavior that you want to stop or reduce. On the flip side, you give attention to the behavior you want to encourage. The hard bit is ignoring a very intelligent German Shepherd who is persistent! Give your German Shepherd a job at home so they stay entertained. This represents big challenges as a German Shepherd owner. You must be smarter than your dog! But the jobs can be as easy or difficult as you have the time and energy to train. This is not a mentally lazy dog, but a breed with extremely high intelligence and a huge breadth of application for that intelligence. Tips for First Time German Shepherd Owners Mar 06, We are obviously huge fans of the breed and even more fanatical about sharing experiences and advice from German Shepherd owners. These amazing dogs are fiercely loyal, make fantastic family pets, are wonderful protectors, and their intelligence cannot be underestimated. Their zeal for life, athletic, and mental capabilities are what endear us to the breed and those same traits, with lack of training and understanding, are also the reason so many German Shepherds, tragically, find themselves in shelters all across the United States. Three to four million of these animals are euthanized because there are not enough homes for them. Twenty-five percent of all the animals entering shelters are purebreds. In , 43, or 4. Many of the , dogs in our US shelters every year are German Shepherds. German Shepherds are highly intelligent and need firm, consistent leadership, and training or they will try to get the upper hand. On the other side of the coin, they learn quickly and are easily trained when they respect their owners. If you are not experienced with dogs, it would be wise to read up on training a working dog, such as a German Shepherd, or hire a professional trainer. They are very smart and need plenty of mental stimulation. Plan to spend considerable time on training to create a well-balanced dog. German Shepherds can be suspicious and protective. They need plenty of socialization from the time they are small puppies to develop into well-balanced dogs that you can take anywhere. They are very active and require about two hours of exercise a day. When you purchase your dog, find a dog that matches your lifestyle. Prey Drive. German Shepherds are herding dogs with a naturally high prey drive and some more than others. Choose your dog wisely, whether it is going to be a family pet, do protection work, or other dog sports, etc. Plan to invest in plenty of non-destructible toys that are appropriate for the dog through all phases of life, such as Kongs, Jolly Balls, Planet Dog toys, West Paw, etc. Family Interaction. German Shepherds bond very strongly with their families and need lots of quality family time and social interaction. They do not do well when spending lots of isolated time alone. German Shepherds are prone to some health problems so avoid backyard breeders and do your research before purchasing. If you are on a budget, consider purchasing health insurance for your dog. When looking for a German Shepherd, be sure to look for a confident dog that is not aggressive, fearful, or the offspring of very aggressive parents. German Shepherds are naturally protective and should be balanced. If you are looking for a dog for protection training, the same rule applies-you are looking for a sound balanced dog that can be trained as opposed to a time bomb waiting to go off. Puppies require considerable time and training. They begin teething around 5 months old and can be a handful during their adolescent years and they require lots of consistent training. If you have the time and energy to invest, this can be an amazing yet frustrating time. In a nutshell, German Shepherds make wonderful pets for people who are willing to invest the time, training, and energy they require. Those that do, will receive a lifetime of unmatched loyalty, love, and devotion from their dog. These dogs make wonderful companions but also require a lot of work. We recently asked experienced German shepherd owners for their best tips and this is what they said: Puppy train early. Puppy training should start when you bring them home. Teaching your puppy will also help them grow up to be a confident, well behaved dog and prevent many problems down the road. Expect puppy biting and nipping. A big surprise for many new German shepherd owners is how much their new puppy enjoys puppy biting. As herding dogs, German shepherd puppies are naturally prone to nip. All German shepherd puppies should be taught not to play bite and redirected to what is appropriate to sink their teeth into. All new owners should learn how to train this skill before bringing their land shark home. Dog Proof your home. German shepherds are naturally curious and as puppies, tend to get into anything they can. Puppy and dog proofing your home is important and will help you avoid lots of pain down the road. Protect your puppy from accidents, potential vet bills, injuries, and worse. Check out how to prepare for a German shepherd puppy here. Buy a good vacuum. These double coated dogs shed year-round and blow their coat twice a year. However, the shedding is manageable with continued brushing, vacuuming, and sweeping-just know it will be a constant thing but the work is worth all the love they return. Plan to brush often. As mentioned above, German shepherds shed — a lot. Give lots of attention. German shepherds are not ornamental dogs content to hang out in the background. They strongly desire to be part of the family and will develop behavior problems when not given the time and attention they need. They are happiest by the side of those they love and as participating family members. Provide lots of exercise. Along with needing lots of attention, they are also athletic and need lots of exercise. Fortunately, you can combine these two activities into play and training time. They love to run, fetch balls, and learn new things. Teach them house manners. When teaching your German shepherd how you expect them to behave indoors you must be consistent. Boundaries and expectations are important for these dogs to learn but also provide stability, which builds confidence. Work their brains as well as their body. German shepherds are very smart. They are capable of learning many things and get bored easily. A bored German shepherd can get destructive and develop anxious behaviors. With training, attention, interactive games, and tough chew toys, you can meet their need for mental stimulation in a fun, healthy way. As herding dogs, German shepherds are naturally protective and can be wary of strangers. They need to be socialized from a young age and exposed to many different situations and people. Doing this will help build their confidence and give you a trustworthy dog that can go anywhere. Teach them to be calm. By now, you should have the idea that German shepherds are very busy, active dogs. This could be a dog bed, a crate, or something like a cot. Whatever it is, it should be a place in your home that you can easily send them to go lay down when you need them safe and out from being underfoot, temporarily. Feed them healthy food. German shepherds are notorious for having sensitive skin and stomachs. A good quality, easily digestible diet full of nutrients for healthy skin is very important. They can also benefit from joint and skin supporting supplements such as chondroitin, glucosamine, and omega 3 oils. Set them up for success. Sadly, many German shepherds develop behavior problems or find themselves dumped at a shelter because no one took the time to train them. Their need for socialization, attention, and physical and mental exercise cannot be overstated. There is nothing more heartbreaking than a German shepherd being failed by their owner. One of the reasons why so many people love these dogs is because they are so active and smart. They are a joy to train and love learning new things. They are extremely loyal and are fast learners. Some of the most important things you can teach them include: Sit. Any dog can be your first dog. There is no such thing as a bad dog as it usually comes down to poor training and socialization by the owner, right from puppyhood. Some breeds are easier for first-time dog owners, while others require a little more time and patience while training. It really does all depend on you and whether the breed is suited to your lifestyle. For example, suppose you are inactive and live in an apartment. In that case, a toy dog such as a chihuahua will be more suitable than if you were looking for a loyal and protective dog that requires a lot of exercise, such as the German Shepherd! You must be able to provide your dog with all his exercise needs, play, and care as this will prevent any future behavior problems, for example, destructive chewing. So, what makes a good first dog, anyway? Well, the best breeds for good first dogs are those considered easy to train, highly intelligent, get along well with other dogs and people, are loyal and protective, and have good general health. All dogs require considerable time and effort to train, but some breeds are much more willing to learn new things than others. The German Shepherd is considered highly intelligent and easy to train. You only need to look at the history of the GSD, intentionally bred for herding sheep and other livestock. This was a skill that required not only intelligence but concentration, stamina, and decision-making. You can train the German Shepherd breed to perform almost any task. Due to their high trainability, obedience, and strength, they are used as police, military, search and rescue, and service dogs. Early socialization is therefore essential. German Shepherds are friendly towards strangers as long as they sense your approval first. German Shepherds are also good with kids — but as long as they have been properly socialized. They are particularly good with children they have grown up with due to their loyal and protective nature. If you have a baby or are planning a family, read my article on the compatibility of German Shepherds and babies here. All breeds have some health issues, but you might want to lean toward a breed with overall good general health, at least until they age. The German Shepherd is generally a fit and healthy breed, although they occasionally suffer from a sensitive stomach. Due to poor breeding practices, German Shepherds are also prone to specific genetic health problems, such as hip dysplasia. Therefore, choosing a reputable breeder is essential and avoiding commercial dog breeding facilities such as puppy farms. Keep in mind that not all of these characteristics will be considered positive. However, they will definitely allow you to understand what you should expect when you buy or adopt a German Shepherd and determine whether or not you think you can handle a German Shepherd for your first dog. You will need to get a good grooming tool. I use the FURminator undercoat de-shedding tool from Amazon. This is particularly suited to German Shepherds as it easily gets through the topcoat and safely removes the loose undercoat hair. Therefore, it comes as no surprise that German Shepherds are good family dogs. If you are wondering why the German Shepherd is so loyal and protective, you only need to remember that he was originally bred for herding sheep and livestock. Training and socializing your German Shepherd puppy is an effective way to make him calm. Puppies should not be removed from their mother until they are at least 8-weeks old as they learn so much during this time, in particular when not to annoy their mother too much! To find out tons more about how to discipline a German Shepherd for biting , check out this helpful post. German Shepherds are known for their strong guarding instincts. This does require a lot of training that you might not be up for as a first-time dog owner so make sure you have enough time to devote to your dog. German Shepherds make good guard dogs and are often used in the security industry and for personal family protection. They are always naturally alert, are extremely brave, and have a strong defense instinct. Training is easy…when there are balls! The German Shepherd just happens to be prone to hip dysplasia. This is a painful hereditary condition of the hip due to the ball and socket joint being too loose or not developing correctly. It can lead to permanent osteoarthritis. You can reduce the risk in the first instance by finding a responsible breeder and choosing a puppy whose parents have been screened for hip dysplasia and therefore have healthy hips. There are various schemes to assess hip traits. When choosing my breeder, one of the first things I checked was the hip scores of the parents and that they were both UK Kennel Club registered. I took these photos during my first meeting with the breeder. These include joint supplements, such as glucosamine and anti-inflammatory medications. As always, make sure to check with your vet first before giving your GSD any supplements. They need an orthopedic bed specifically suited for large breeds that provide extra support for their joints. This is especially important from puppyhood as your dog may not develop arthritis or joint issues until he is much older. You can check out my German Shepherd bed recommendations here. During this study , researchers believe German Shepherds are one of the breeds that have become needier due to breeders attempting to make the dogs more affectionate as pets. The thing is, owners are often also to blame for this clingy behavior, especially if they are constantly petting, cuddling, and praising their German Shepherd! My German Shepherd is never left alone for longer than 4 hours, and she is always well exercised before I leave the house. They need a lot of daily exercise German Shepherds are the perfect fit for anyone with an active lifestyle that wants to take their dog with them on their adventures. Adult German Shepherds require a ton of exercise, a minimum of two hours per day, to eliminate their pent-up energy and prevent behavioral problems. This exercise should include walking but also running off-lead in a safe area. They also need playtime for mental stimulation and ongoing training. Remember, puppies will need to gently build up to this amount of exercise to prevent harm to their fast-growing joints and bones. As a general rule, aim for exercising your puppy for five minutes per month of age, twice a day. Instead, you can consider crossbreeds such as mini German Shepherds or smaller German Shepherd mixes. German Shepherds are good with kids over time. This breed is perfect for experienced owners and adults compared to kids. Training a GSD takes time but is great to help the breed mingle with kids faster and understand the family over time. Oftentimes, your German Shepherd will own you not the other way around! Failure to socialize or train them properly and consistently might lead to inappropriate or even aggressive behaviors. You need lots of time to brush and groom them regularly. Most people have the best intentions when they bring a new puppy into their home. Make sure if you choose a German Shepherd, he will be the perfect fit for your lifestyle. Some might be happy enough with long walks while others might need more strenuous exercises. Ample socialization To have a well-mannered German Shepherd, you need to commit yourself to provide plenty of exposure to different environments, people, and animals. It will also help you address specific concerns and unwanted behaviors. Be consistent Set the rules and enforce them at all times. Final Thoughts Owning a German Shepherd definitely has its challenges. Because of their size, intelligence, and overall temperament, GSD ownership involves a certain level of commitment that not all pet owners are ready for. German Shepherds are an intelligent, easily trainable dog breed which makes them a great choice for first time dog owners. While they are sensitive dogs, they are eager to please and enjoy interacting with their family. They have been bred to have strong protective instincts which makes them a good choice for families with children, and they also do well in both urban environments and more rural locations. Provided they are introduced properly, German Shepherds also get along well with other dogs, cats, and livestock and they can be great apartment dogs as long as their physical and mental needs are being met. Do you enjoy being around dogs that can think on their feet? German Shepherds are known for their high intelligence levels! A higher level of intelligence means that these dogs also have a lot of common sense and great problem-solving skills. How about having a dog that can show off some cool tricks to your friends? The German Shepherd breed also has a great reputation for their trainability. As a first-time dog owner, training is probably one of the biggest concerns you might have. Thankfully, the German Shepherd is a breed that excels in learning new behaviors and they are easy to train. German Shepherds are also very responsive and willing to please their owners provided they are treated right and understand what is being asked of them which makes them more like to focus on you as you are training them. Want a dog that can not only take on a challenge, but enjoys it as well? As a whole, the German Shepherd is a very adaptable and hearty breed. They do well in apartments, large homes, urban environments, and rural communities. With proper training and socialization, German Shepherds can be a favorite to take along to public parks, breweries, and other busy locations. They excel in a wide variety of dog sports and dog jobs and they enjoy learning new things and tend to be very sociable with their households. When considering a German Shepherd as your first dog, there are a few things to consider to make sure they would make the best fit for you and your household. They want to be where you are! While German Shepherds can do well in daycare settings, they do best when their owners are able to make time to play with them, train them, and interact with them. With their high energy levels and enthusiasm for activities, they excel in dog sports such as obedience trials, rally, agility, nosework, and Schutzhund. German Shepherds also make great companions for those who like outdoor activities such as hiking. They do best with some kind of job, or at least in environments where activity levels are high. They are also highly intelligent dogs and will need their owners to provide them with activities or toys that engage all of their senses in order to truly tire them out. German Shepherds can do well in a crate provided they are trained properly but are not the best dogs to leave in the crates for long periods of time and they can develop some behavioral issues such as separation anxiety if their owners do not spend enough time with them. Despite being so large, they can do well as apartment dogs and be fine in smaller spaces as long as they are getting frequent exercise and have all of their physical and mental needs met. They love to be around their owners and family members at all times and can get stressed when left outside alone for long periods or if they are kept separate from the excitement of a family gathering for too long. If you are considering getting a German Shepherd and you live in an apartment complex, housing development, military base, or other area where there are stricter pet regulations, you should also check to make sure German Shepherds are even allowed where you live. Some areas have weight restrictions that German Shepherds exceed, and other areas have breed restrictions that can sometimes include German Shepherds. As with any dog breed, unexpected medical costs also need to be accounted for and the German Shepherd does have a reputation for being more susceptible to some genetic conditions such as hip and elbow dysplasia which may add to potential veterinary costs. Equipment, grooming services, and training costs for your German Shepherd should also be taken into consideration. These dogs can be emotionally sensitive to harsher punishments and tones, and they respond well to reward-based training and patient owners who can work with them on any training issue they may be having. They also tend to be a very vocal breed, so if you live in an apartment or neighborhood you may want to work with a trainer to figure out why your German Shepherd might be barking so much and what you can do to help fix that. German Shepherds also tend to be clingy and can develop separation anxiety, so an owner who does not mind having a dog attached to them at all times is ideal! What To Look For German Shepherds should be between 40 to 90 pounds , with males generally being larger than females. Their ears should stand upright, and their tail should be relatively straight with no curve. Personality-wise they should be curious, alert, and slightly rambunctious if they are a young puppy. German Shepherds are not usually naturally aggressive dogs, but they can be quite vocal and protective of their owners and households which can sometimes be misinterpreted as aggression. You can run into similar issues whether you get your German Shepherd direct from the breeder or adopt one from a rescue group or animal shelter. Deciding on where to get your German Shepherd is a personal decision and there are a lot of external factors that can contribute to that decision. No matter where you decide to get your German Shepherd, always remember to research the breeder or facility heavily and get as much information and history about your potential German Shepherd as possible. Rescue groups and animal shelters frequently have purebred German Shepherds available for adoption , and many groups also get in litters of purebred puppies from an accidental breeding or from breeders who are getting out of the business. If you opt to purchase from a breeder, make sure you conduct thorough research into their breeding practices and if possible, consult with other owners who have also purchased puppies from them. Here are some tips to help you prepare for bringing your new German Shepherd home: Training Depending on the age of your new pup, training should begin soon after your new arrival has gotten acquainted with your home and everyone in it and has had time to decompress after all of the excitement of going to a new home. You can start basic training at home and consider reaching out to a local dog trainer to get your German Shepherd enrolled in some group classes or ask about receiving one-on-one help for specific issues or concerns. For young puppies, you can begin potty training them almost immediately and start working on creating a good potty-training schedule to help speed up the process. Care German Shepherds are a high energy breed no matter what age they are, so make sure to plan accordingly! German Shepherds, while they do not require regular trips to the groomers for a trim, do require frequent brushing and they will shed their undercoat heavily once or twice a year. During those shedding seasons, the amount of hair is enough to make it seem like you have another German Shepherd! This is pretty normal but can be minimized by making any food changes gradually and adding in a probiotic to help the transition go a little more smoothly. Supply List Before getting your new German Shepherd, make sure you have basic supplies on hand. This includes a good quality leash, collar , bowls, and toys. Additional supplies to think about include a crate , training treats, a bed, and anything else that you feel is important to have on-hand before bringing your new family member home. German Shepherds, just like any breed of dog, require a lifelong commitment to making sure they are cared for, and their needs are met. Unexpected veterinary costs and the fluctuating cost of dog food and supplies are also things that need to be taken into consideration before bringing home your new furry friend. Closing Thoughts German Shepherds make a fantastic choice for first-time dog owners and can be a better choice than many other breeds. They are intelligent, athletic, easy to care for, and easy to train. Because they are one of the most popular breeds, there is a plethora of information available for new owners to help them care for their new friend. There are frequently purebred German Shepherds available in shelters and from rescue groups at a much lower cost than if they were purchased from a breeder, which makes them an easily accessible breed for those owners who are financially stable enough to care for a dog but who do not necessarily want to shell out the big bucks for a puppy, or those who would prefer to adopt and rescue an at-risk German Shepherd rather than shop for a young puppy that requires more time and energy. Overall, this breed is a great choice for single owner households, families with children of all ages, and even senior citizens. Be the first to know when we have new puppies! All Rights Reserved. Are you considering getting a puppy? That is a big decision! We rarely get puppies into rescue. Before you take this big step here are some things you might want to consider. So consider the information below — and carefully think about the fact that an older dog might be a better fit for your family. Be sure you are willing to make a year commitment to caring for a golden for his or her entire life. If you decide to get a puppy, it is especially important to choose a breeder very carefully. When purchasing a puppy, you put a lot of trust in the breeder. Pet Shops or Dealers Our advice is to steer clear of pet shops, dealers, flea markets, or any type of mass puppy raising operation. These pets are often ill or have genetic defects. No reputable breeder will sell puppies through a pet shop because a reputable breeder wants to know where their puppies are going. A particularly sad scenario for these dogs is one we see several times a year. We get a call to take in a young golden that has a hip or leg problem and needs expensive surgery — a genetic defect. While the pet store sometimes guarantees the dog, and will accept it back and replace it with another dog — think about it. What happens to the dog that needs surgery? GRRMF is called upon to step in and help these sweet dogs who are otherwise young and healthy but are doomed to a life of pain if they do not get surgery. We raise funds and help them and then adopt them to a new home. Please trust us on this issue — stay clear of pet shops when getting a puppy. You are setting yourself up for heartbreak if you do. Backyard Breeders Often these folks sell through the classifieds and are breeding their own pet thinking it would be fun to have puppies or that their dog should be bred at least once before being spayed. Some backyard breeders are all about making money. Backyard breeders know little about breeding standards and do not usually provide genetic testing of the parents that is recommended by the Golden Retriever Club of America. You take a chance getting a dog from a backyard breeder. Are you prepared, once the dog grows, to handle any potential health problems arising from genetic defects passed on to your dog? For example, what if your dog needs surgery due to hip dysplasia at one year old? Can you afford a few thousand dollars for corrective surgery? While you might feel like you are getting a bargain from a backyard breeder, think long term and factor in all the risks you are taking. Furthermore, know that many backyard breeders try to charge as much for their dogs as a responsible breeder. Choosing a Reputable Breeder Your best choice for purchasing a puppy is to research reputable breeders. A word about Rescue Dogs Rescue dogs may or may not have been responsibly bred. We consider this only one of the many advantages to adopting an older dog. What you see is what you get! Goldens Rescued Since .However, avoid retractable leashes whenever possible: Although they seem easier during walks, retractable leashes are actually dangerous, especially for young puppies who are still getting the hang of walking on a leash. Keep your puppy on a regular leash with a maximum of six feet of space between you both. Snowy Pines recommends slip leads: Slip leads are what puppies are taught to walk on from a young age at Snowy Pines, since they give you as the walker more control over the puppy as he gets the hang of normal walks. You can also opt for an embroidered collar if your puppy seems bothered by the noise or extra weight of the dog tags. Many puppy owners choose embroidered collars since dog tags should be removed when the puppy is left alone as they can pose a hazard. You can stick with a small food and water bowl. Puppy Food Your puppy will need high-quality food to grow strong! In most cases, this means his own dog crate. A good dog crate should be large enough for him to stand up, turn around, and lay down comfortably. You can choose a crate that expands as it grows to save money in the long run. Most of our puppies at Snowy Pines will do well in a inch wire kennel with a divider that you can remove once he gets bigger. Be sure to check out our dog bed reviews too! Remember that most toys should not be left alone with your puppy since unsupervised playtime can lead to a choking or blockage incident. Image Source Puzzle Toys Puzzle toys keep your pup mentally stimulated while they also have fun. Additionally, these interactive toys provide help with weight management, satisfy natural hunting instincts, and even relieve feelings of stress or anxiety. These toys can easily become a comfort item and help curb any potential anxiety as well. Chase Toys Golden puppies need to have regular exercise. Chase toys are simple things you can buy at any pet store, like ropes and balls, but some interactive chew toys are designed to add a little zing to your daily play routines. So, for example, if your puppy just woke up from his nap and pottied, but you need to do laundry and load the dishwasher, the exercise pen is a perfect solution. It enables your pup to enjoy safe solo playtime. Training Treats Food is a powerful reinforcer , so treats are incredibly beneficial in the early stages of puppy training. Try offering him a treat when he potties outside or uses a chew toy. Quick Tip: The treat should be small and chewy so that he can eat it fast and keep his attention on you! With the proper carpet cleaner and enzyme spray, you can quickly combat any potty mistakes anywhere in the house. Dog Shampoo and Conditioner The Retriever family has a unique, double-layered coat designed to keep them warm in winter and cool in summer. It also dries quickly after becoming wet. It is such an impressive coat that it is essentially self-cleaning when it comes to dirt and debris. Pooper Scooper and Poop Bags A pooper scooper is a handy tool that many homeowners with yards find essential. Instead of bending down every time your pup goes, you can use a pooper scooper to clutch onto the waste and quickly throw it in your outside garbage bin. They are also expected as a common courtesy to other people outside. So before your English Cream Golden puppy comes home, be sure that your home, backyard, and car are puppy-safe and puppy-proofed. In the Home: Image Source Keep the toilet lid closed. Believe it or not, open toilet lids have the potential to be drowning hazards. Secure medicine and cleaning products. Keep these products high up or use childproof locks and latches on lower cabinets. Garbage should be kept lidded and secure. Lidded, secured bins are the best type of garbage cans you can have with a young puppy. Not only do you want to avoid spilled garbage, but a locked lid will prevent your puppy from getting into any potential hazards. Hide electrical cords and blind cords. Exposed electrical cords and long blind cords can prove to be fatal for curious puppies. Keep electrical cords hidden away, buy cord wraps to keep them safely covered, and be sure that your blind cords are tied high and inaccessible. Invest in a pet or baby gate. Gates can be used for doorways or staircases to keep your puppy away from certain areas of the house. In the Backyard: Be careful of plants and landscaping that may be poisonous or dangerous. Many plants are toxic to dogs , so be sure to triple-check if any are growing in your yard. Secure your yard with fencing and add gates around bodies of water. If you plan to let your puppy roam freely in your backyard, you should have complete fencing with no puppy-sized gaps around the perimeter of the property. If you have any ponds or pools, block them off with appropriate fencing to avoid accidental drowning. Keep your yard landscaped and manicured. Long grass and brushy areas can invite ticks, which can be extremely dangerous if any potential bites are not discovered early on. Generally speaking, your grass should not be higher than a couple of inches and potentially even shorter while your puppy is still young. In the Car: Image Source Move any chewable items and lock loose items in the glovebox. Confine your puppy in one area of the vehicle, like the backseat. Keeping your puppy confined to one area of the car is safe for everyone. Many puppy parents choose harness seat belts and car seats for younger dogs, while older dogs are big enough to safely sit in the back seat or trunk with cargo barriers. As your Golden Retriever gets older, you may find yourself opting for different barrier methods that will better suit his size. Kennel your puppy while in the car. Crating your puppy is the safest mode of transportation while in the car. Deciding on a Daily Routine Like children, puppies thrive on a fixed routine because an orderly one instills structure and confidence. Sticking to a schedule can also help reinforce potty training and prevent behavioral issues , like separation anxiety and barking or whining. Think of a schedule that works best for your puppy, which should include: Feeding: Pick out regular meal times and stick to them as closely as possible. Golden Retriever puppies will need three daily feedings until they are six months old. After that, stick to feeding twice a day at the same time each day. Fixed meal times will help you predict when your puppy needs to potty each day, which better ensures easier potty training. Scheduled potty breaks: Take your puppy out to the yard or on a walk to potty immediately after a meal and after they wake up to enforce a schedule that will help with house training. Playtime and exercise: Playing and mental stimulation are key to a happy puppyhood. Even though they will mellow out in personality as they become adults, Retriever puppies are high energy! Place the dog crate in a quiet part of the house since we kennel train at Snowy Pines, and it helps ensure their safety and comfort. And now is the exciting part: Your puppy is finally home! But now what? Puppy Socialization Socialization is vital for young puppies, especially between 8 to 16 weeks of age: A well-socialized puppy will grow into a happy and confident adult that feels secure in various situations. You can also invite friends and family over to meet the puppy. In this case, more is always merrier! To help your puppy feel comfortable around humans in general, expose him to different types of people when he is still young. We also recommend holding off on public settings like dog parks until your puppy is settled into his new home and routine so as to not overwhelm him. Once your puppy is vaccinated, you can consider signing him up for puppy socialization classes. These classes, alongside training courses, can help prepare your pup for a long walk or a day at doggy day camp. Training Techniques Training is just as essential as early socialization. He may become disruptive and exhibit poor behaviors like jumping on visitors, chewing on furniture, and barking incessantly, among other frustrating challenges. Your puppy may also struggle with separation anxiety. They will comprehend basic commands and learn things such as his name, housebreaking, and early manners. They will be able to take on more advanced training and commands, and they should understand what good dog manners are. This age is essential when it comes to instilling how you want him to behave through adolescence. Puppies will begin teething at this point. Your new puppy might use anything possible to exercise his teeth, so you must start teaching him not to use your hand or furniture as chew toys. Anytime your puppy chews on something undesirable, have a toy nearby to put in his mouth instead. You can also try using bitter apple spray to deter biting and chewing on household items. Be firm but loving with clear, consistent commands and minute training sessions each day. Quick Tip: Keep in mind that at this age, this is when the key socialization period ends for your puppy: From this point forward, everything your puppy has learned will influence the way he behaves around people and other animals. While this is good, this age will also be a challenge because he will try to determine his ranking in the household, which can be frustrating when hormones play a role! Although spaying and neutering are standard for most breeds around six months old, studies have found that doing so for Golden Retrievers can actually increase the risk for joint disorders. Therefore, the standard for this breed has recently changed, and many vets suggest waiting to spay or neuter until 12 to 24 months. Training can be an overwhelming process, which is why many Golden puppy owners opt for working with a dog trainer or enrolling in training classes. Snowy Pines offers three levels of training when adopting one of their golden retrievers, which can save you tons of time and frustration in the long run. At your first checkup, you can also ask about getting your puppy microchipped! Buying A Golden Retriever From A Respectable, Professional Breeder Purchasing a Golden retriever Puppy from a respected, responsible professional breeder is by far the best option when it comes to getting yourself a good quality, healthy puppy given the best start in life. A responsible professional breeder: Cares greatly about the overall quality and welfare of the breed and selectively breeds for the betterment of the Golden Retriever population as a whole. Screen sire and dam for health issues in trying to breed puppies with the lowest possible chance of inherited disease. Will help you to select the right puppy for you from the many different personalities in their litter. Not all dogs are created equal! Some are more energetic, more headstrong, more confident, others less so. They will match you to the perfect puppy for your hopes and lifestyle. They handle, care for, and socialize puppies in such an expert way that the puppies have had the best possible start in life and the greatest chance of growing up a confident, happy dog of good temperament. They provide some of the best advice and support that can be given about how you should care for your new family member, from the moment you make the decision right through your Goldens entire life. So as you can see, there are many benefits to buying from a professional breeder. But surely there must be some cons you may be thinking? Well it depends how you look at it, but: A professional breeder will ask you many questions to be sure you are a good fit and have the right lifestyle that fits in with owning a Golden Retriever. You could have a long wait. Good breeders are popular and do not breed excessively, so you may have to wait a year or more before a puppy becomes available. But a benefit to this is that it weeds out the impulse buyers which cuts down on puppies that are given up after rushed decisions. Compared to some other options, you will pay quite a high price. I say a high price but what I mean is a fair price really. A fair price for a good quality, healthy puppy. But mostly backyard breeders are the unscrupulous types. You usually will not be able to see the premises on which the puppies are bred, they will not ask any questions of prospective owners and there will be no commitment or offer of help and advice for the future of the puppies they breed. This results in a poorer quality of life for the animals, and expensive vet bills for the owners. One positive of backyard breeders though is the price. Yes, they are considerably cheaper than professional breeders. And the savings you make up front are more than lost for extra vet bills down the road. So the risk is your puppy has a higher chance of inherited disease and behavior problems than the general population. There will be no true guarantee of pedigree. But if your friend has taken steps to get veterinary advice and care for the puppies, has looked after and socialized them well, maybe even knows the father of the puppies and can prove he is of good health and pedigree then this option may not be so bad. However they got into the situation, there are way too many homeless dogs in the world. Lack of space and insufficient funding inevitably means that many dogs each year are euthanized. Maybe you could give a second chance at life to such a dog? But you should also be aware that some rescued dogs will have behavioral issues, though the center staff will inform you of this. They may also have suffered some level of abuse and have psychological issues, phobias or anxieties that may not be evident until a certain situation arises. So there is some due diligence and this greatly increases the success rate of finding happy homes for dogs that suit their new human family. This is obviously a good thing for both the dogs and hopeful owners too! Buying From A Pet Store Or A Puppy Mill A large number of dogs bought from pet stores originate from puppy farms, also known as puppy mills, which are profit driven businesses that mass-produce dogs and sell through pet stores and classifieds. In puppy mills, dogs are bred in appalling conditions, kept in overcrowded small wire cages, given little exercise or socialization, enjoy no human contact and receive nothing in the way of veterinary care. The puppies are usually taken away from their mothers and litter-mates at such a young age that behavioral issues in the adult dog are extremely common. The dogs in puppy mills are no more than a commodity, a cash crop to be produced and harvested while spending as little as possible to maximize profits as far as possible. Yes, many people have been lucky enough to have purchased the most glorious of family pets from a pet store, but for each one a lot of suffering has occurred for countless more. I strongly advise that you do not support the puppy mill industry and never buy a dog from a puppy mill or pet store. The risks of not getting a quality, healthy dog are too high, and the ethics of the industry are shocking with many dogs suffering at their hands. Everybody should work to eradicate the entire industry and the first step is by not supporting them financially. There are many places and options available to get a Golden Retriever puppy, some good, some bad, and puppy mills and pet stores just an appalling option to be avoided. In my opinion your 2 best options are to source a puppy from a professional breeder or to adopt from a rescue center. But there are other options available and I hope this article has given you some information to help you in your decision. Please let us know about your experiences of getting a GR from any of the sources above, or even one I may have forgotten. Thank you.

This can easily be accomplished by investing in a crate or exercise pen. This also provides a safe place for your puppy to sleep and helps with potty training. But another great way to keep your eyes on your puppy, which can also help during potty training, is to keep your pup leashed or tethered to you in the house. Leashing your dog inside will reinforce your bond, keep your puppy safe, and alert you when they start sniffing around to go potty. Durable, nontoxic plastic and rubber toys and treat puzzles can help keep your busy puppy occupied and out of trouble. An interactive toy such as this Kong Wobbler is a great example of a safe puppy toy. Begin training young Training begins the day you bring your puppy home. Puppies can easily start their basic commands such as sit, stay, place, off, etc. Even as puppies, they love to please their owners and enjoy learning new things. However, they require consistency and leadership to become confident, well behaved dogs. Exercise is mandatory This breed is very active and even as young puppies require some form of exercise or they become destructive. The younger the puppy the less exercise they need but owners should be prepared to spend time exercising their dog, every day, throughout their lifetime. Fortunately, exercise can come in many forms such as playing in the yard and going for walks. Line up your vet and other providers If you already have a vet and service providers, this is not as important. German shepherds do best on high quality, large breed puppy food that is easy to digest. Flying Saucer Puppy Food Dishes help prevent young puppies from walking in their food. Consistent rules and schedule When training your puppy, they need consistency and an understanding of what the house rules are. Decide early on what they will and will not be allowed to do and incorporate those boundaries into training. For example, if the puppy is not allowed on the couch, they should never be allowed on the couch. If you want them to sit before going outside, they should always sit before going outside. Keeping to a schedule, such as feeding them at the same time each day, also helps with potty training. Consistency helps them grow into confident, well-adjusted dogs while inconsistently can cause anxiety and confusion. In other words, set your puppy up for success. Please share these tips with all your friends. A general rule of thumb is that a puppy can hold her bladder for approximately one hour for every month old they are. Most puppies find their way to a new home at months old, so they should go for a toilet break every hours to start. How often should my puppy poop a day? Typically, most pups will go once or twice a day — although some may go four or more times! How many hours should a German Shepherd puppy sleep? On average, a German Shepherd puppy will sleep for 18 hours a day. Some pups sleep longer than others but they usually sleep between 15 and 20 hours in a hour period. As puppies get older, they sleep less. The average 4-month-old puppy sleeps a little over 11 hours a day. Should I sleep with my German Shepherd puppy? You should not sleep with your German Shepherd puppy during the first few months home. Yet you can let your pup sleep beside you in a crate or a dog bed. Until they are completely up, they flop around, go up and down. You can help your puppy to strengthen her ear muscle by whistling and making funny noises that perk up her ears. When do German Shepherds start teething? Starting at 4 months old, German Shepherds will begin to lose their puppy teeth. But some puppies start losing their teeth earlier or later. You may discover a discarded tooth on the floor. Or you may see a few drops of blood on her chew toy. And it is not uncommon for a puppy to swallow her tooth, which is perfectly normal. When do German Shepherds get all their adult teeth? An adult German Shepherd should have 42 adult teeth. The small incisors in front usually come in first, followed by the big canines, the premolars and the molars. All adult teeth should be in place around months old. Puppies use their mouth to explore their environment, so nipping is very common. This behavior, called teething, can last until the puppy is 6 months old when all her adult teeth have started showing. German Shepherds grew into their full size between 18 months to 2 years old. But they are not considered adult dogs until they reach the age of 3 years old. If your pup is still young, one of the most effective ways to calm her down is to give her regular mental and physical exercise. The rule of thumb is that you should give a puppy 5 minutes of exercise for every month old they are. For example, a 4-month-old puppy would need 20 minutes of exercise. When do German Shepherds get their full coat? She will start the coat change on her face first. Then her fluffy puppy coat will be replaced by the smoother adult coat down her back, towards to trail and gradually down her sides. When do German Shepherds start shedding? While their shedding is especially intense during the spring and fall, they lose their undercoat during the rest of the year. Other Than Vacuuming When should I bring my puppy for the first vet visit? You should bring your new puppy to see a veterinarian no later than 2 days after coming home. Some breeders require this within 48 hours as included in their sales contract. It is very important for your vet to examine your puppy to look for signs of disease. When should a German Shepherd puppy get her vaccination? Your German Shepherd puppy is recommended to get her first vaccination distemper and parvovirus between weeks of age. Here are the recommended vaccinations from AKC for your reference: Some dogs do not need every vaccine. You should always discuss it with your vet. When should my German Shepherd puppy be wormed? A German Shepherd puppy should be wormed for the first time at 2 weeks of age, then at 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12 weeks old fortnightly until 12 weeks of age. After this, they can be wormed monthly until they are 12 months old. When do female German Shepherds go into the first heat? Female German Shepherds started their first heat as early as 7 months old, but this may vary from dog to dog. During that time, they may begin mounting other dogs or could become touchy or grumpy. There will be discharge and many owners use feminine pads and a diaper-type arrangement to keep the house clean. The American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior AVSAB recommends that pet guardians begin taking puppies on walks and public outings as early as one week after their first round of vaccinations, at about 7 weeks old. Instead of going for a marathon for the first time, it is advised to build up the distance with your GSD with time. Remember dogs cannot sweat like humans to reduce their body temperature. When can I walk my German Shepherd without a leash? Never let your dog go off-leash where there might be traffic or where he could injure himself. PART V German Shepherd puppy socialization guide Socialization helps them learn what to expect from the world around them and gives them the tools they need to navigate it as they get older. This includes new people, dogs, and animals, learning how to interact with new environments, and being exposed to a wide variety of sounds, smells, and sights. Socialization is especially important in German Shepherds starting from as early as 8 weeks old. This is because this breed is hard-wired to be protective of their owners as well as their property. Failing to socialize can make the dog become aloof to strangers. Other common signs of unsocialized in dogs include: Fearfulness or skittishness around unfamiliar people or animals Aggression towards other dogs or people Lack of confidence in new or unfamiliar situations Difficulty with basic training commands Inability to handle being handled or touched Puppies that are well-socialized are more likely to be healthy, obedient pets that make great additions to any household. They are intelligent dogs that can be challenging to train for first-time owners. However, with the right mindset, you can train your German Shepherd to become an obedient and well-behaved canine citizen in no time. At what age should I begin training my puppy? What should I teach my puppy first? Is it ok to crate my pup overnight? What are the basic commands every puppy must learn? How to motivate my puppy? Last but not least, we have compiled an easy-to-follow training guide. This training guide is our best effort in compiling a collection of training resources for any new GSD owner to kick-start training a new puppy — without wasting your time searching forever online. Each part is only one page long with at least one video for a demonstration. German Shepherds are powerful guard dogs that make great pets. However, raising a German shepherd puppy is not an easy task. Make sure you purchase more than enough food a few days before your puppy arrives and create a space for storing them in your home. Puppy-Proof Your Home German Shepherd puppies are curious creatures that love putting their nose in everything around the house. So, the first thing you should do to keep your pup safe is puppy-proof your home. Puppy proofing your home can help you keep your new pet out of certain rooms in the house. You can use baby gates to keep your dog confined in a particular part of the house. You can also cover or replace all the electrical cords in the home. Puppy proofing the house can make it easy for you to train your new pup. Build a Feeding Stand Dogs are possessive creatures; therefore, your new pup cannot feed or drink water using just any bowl in the house. So, make sure you get some high-quality bowls for the new addition to your family. The bowls should be big enough to feed your dog for several years. And instead of putting the bowls on the floor, you can even build a feeding stand for your new pup. A food stand can help you prevent food spillage and save you some cash in the end. It can even stress it out. Make sure you pick a place in the house with less traffic; after all, no pet loves eating in a high traffic place. Create More Space in Your Home for the Dog Adopting a pet means creating room for an extra member of your family in the house. Finding it when your pup is itching for its walk can be quite tedious. So, find out which house plants and flowers can affect your German Shepherd pup. And if the ones in your home are poisonous, you can replace them before your new pup arrives. One of the best ways to keep them from danger is by ensuring your backyard has a high fence. A high fence can help you keep your pet out of danger by keeping it from wandering out of your compound. If you plan on giving your pet free reign, then make sure your fence is high enough. Most pet parents already have other animals in their home. Therefore, you should prepare a safe space for introducing your current pets to the new addition to your home. After all, cats are territorial creatures that need their own space. Create a Dog Potty Area A dog potty area can come in handy, especially when potty training your new pup. Look for a nice place in your compound with less traffic and build a potty area for your new dog. It can be a particular corner in your backyard. A pet door can allow your dog to enter and leave the house at any time. Plus, if the potty region is in your backyard, a pet door can help you prevent your pup from soiling itself in the house. Conclusion Other than protecting us, a German Shepherd pup can bring joy into your life. Make sure you pet-proof your home and create space for your new pup in the house before it arrives. Preparing your home before the pup arrives can make it easy for it to adjust to its new home. Guest Post by:. Or looking to add a German Shepherd puppy to your family and want to know what you might need? Things will definitely go more smoothly if you have everything ready and in place before your German Shepherd puppy comes home. Crate- Crate training is important for your puppy's safety and education. It makes potty training your GSD much easier, too. There are two types of crates: wire or plastic. We prefer the wire ones in most cases. Get the size your puppy can grow into and will fit as an adult, this is usually the 48 version. Wire crates typically come with dividers so you can make it smaller when they're a baby and allow more room as they grow up. Cheaper is not always better. Invest in a quality name brand crate for the safety of your puppy. Dog Collar- start with a nylon adjustable collar. Leash- a six foot non-retractable leash is an essential. I prefer lightweight leather, there are many types of nylon ones that are also good. Retractable leashes such as the flexi-leash are unsafe and detrimental to training, we do not recommend these at all. They run delivery routes all through Texas and other places. They also offer shipping. You can find them online and order through their website. They're also less chewable than plastic. A lot of these pups do like to play in water, and their dishes are no exception. In this case, if your pup is one of those individuals, it's sometimes best to keep the water outside. Toys- Puppies love and need to chew. Nylabone toys are excellent for this and are a great thing to keep in their crate to help them stay calm and busy in there. Skip the puppy varieties, these pups can go straight to the heavy duty adult ones. The varieties that have raised bumps on them seem to be the favorites around here. Kong toys are also good, and can be stuffed with their ground raw food, organic plain full fat yogurt, or other tasty treats, then frozen to make a nice pacifier to keep them occupied. And soft toys or rope type toys should be used only under supervision as it's easy for a puppy to destroy and ingest pieces of these. We don't recommend rawhides for the same reason, also many rawhides are somewhat toxic. Bedding- puppies go through definite chewing phases, so an expensive fluffy bed is generally not a great investment in the beginning. In addition, there will likely be accidents as your pup transitions to their new home with you. So a towel or soft small blanket that's easily washable in the crate works well until your pup is mature enough to handle something nicer. Just be careful they aren't tearing up or ingesting the towel or blanket either. This is a good list of the basics to have upon arrival of your German Shepherd puppy. We are always available if you're shopping and have any questions about the suitability of something you may be looking at. We are happy to help you and your puppy get off to the best start possible so feel free to contact us today! Nevada Haus.

Temperament Have you ever thought of a calm, easy-going, lovey-dovey family dog? This breed is your sweet-loving loyalist with a big heart for family. Carrying its playfulness from puppyhood through adulthood, the Spangold Retriever is a good dog with children. He is a couch potato and will spend lounging at home with family. This dog is not a barking nuisance. The dog only barks when something is not right around—raising to the occasion as a reliable watchdog. Shedding Level As discussed earlier, this dog sports a medium-short dense coat. Both parents of this breed have dense coats and shed a lot. You may see hair everywhere with this dog. To prevent allergies associated with these hairs, you must vacuum your space consistently and remember to keep your rugs and carpets hair free. Trainability Generally, this dog breed is easily trainable. With a cool temperament and intelligence, following instructions is straightforward. First-time dog owners will enjoy having them due to this trait. The dog has a pleasant social flair that makes it attentive and alert. Here are a few vital things to note: 1. Your dog should have a careful-selected balanced diet with proteins, carbohydrates, and vitamins. Treats may be nice for training but should be provided sparingly. The same applies to table scraps. Good nutrition is the precursor to a healthy and happy dog. In spring and fall, nearly all dogs undergo shedding. You definitely will have to increase the frequency of brushing your dog to, like, once every day. Other areas you also want to consider cleaning weekly include behind the floppy ears to avoid the buildup of dirt and infections. Good dental hygiene by brushing teeth daily ensures fresh, odorless breath. Teeth brushing also helps to prevent periodontal diseases. Spangold Retriever is definitely not the aggressive type of dog. However, you need to have it pumped up and exercise. With regular exercise, your dog not only becomes fit but also healthier. According to research , physical training is the perfect exit strategy for obesity and overweight problems. Remember, the Golden Retriever requires that extra motivation to exercise. You could provide mental stimulation through toys, dog puzzles, or play the catch game. Ensure Good Health A healthy dog is a happy dog. From providing nutritious foods to helping your Spangold Retriever exercise, the health needs of this dog are far and wide. You need to ensure your dog is free of any health risks. Therefore, regular checks are recommended. Visit your vet for screening, especially for diseases the dog is prone to. Some of the diseases and conditions your pooch is likely to suffer from are; Hip dysplasia. Depending on the type food they are getting, a good daily average of around 3 cups of dry dog pellets per day is sufficient. Like all dogs, a Spangold Retriever needs constant access to fresh, clean water. They also need a good source of essential fatty acids , which are good for their thick and dense coats and their general health and well-being. They will need adequate protein as well, which will assist with skin, nail, bone, and muscle health. That said, carbohydrates like wheat or corn can quickly make them overweight and lead to various health issues and should be avoided. Most dogs need an average of around calories per pound per day to maintain a healthy weight, and an average Spangold weighs in at around 60 pounds. This can be altered depending on how active your Spangold is and depending on their age. They ideally need around 45 minutes of brisk walking a day, and if this is not strictly adhered to, it can quickly lead to behavioral problems. Regular exercise and quality time with your Spangold will also help with bonding and prevent separation anxiety. Their highly trainable nature makes them easy to put on a leash, though their propensity for hunting makes leash training absolutely necessary. They will always follow their instincts when coming into contact with small animals and chase them for miles without stopping. This can easily lead to a lost dog, or it can be dangerous when in an area with high traffic. While Spangolds will love to play with toys and ball, this cannot be counted as exercise. The best exercise for a dog is a brisk walk or a run alongside a bicycle. This ease of training makes them a great option for first-time dog owners. Their finely-tuned hunting skills are excellent at tracking prey, and this scenting instinct follows over to their training. They will swiftly pick up any training cues and commands and relish any treats given in return. One of the best training methods for Spangolds is using positive reinforcement, which is the concept that rewarding good behavior will lead to more of that behavior in the future. They will take to this method quickly, due to their inherent desire to please their owners. Spangolds are clever dogs, and in addition to regular walks, they will benefit greatly from games and activities that require chasing, scenting, and catching and fetching. Their coat is fairly prone to tangling and matting if not looked after, and pay attention to their feathered tails, legs, and ears. They are high-shedding dogs, especially in the spring and fall, and during these times, they should ideally be brushed daily. Their nails are not particularly fast-growing but should be regularly trimmed to prevent injury or infection. While this gives them their adorable, irresistible look, their heavy ears hang tightly on their head with limited airflow and can thus be prone to infection if not cleaned regularly. It is also important to dry the inside of the ear canals after they get bathed or go swimming, as this can greatly reduce the risk of infection. This can be quickly remedied if caught early, so if you notice any repeated scratching, head rubbing, or discharge, your dog should be taken to a vet as soon as possible. Another common ailment among Spangolds is atopic dermatitis. Their thick coat can make them prone to this illness if not cleaned regularly, but they can also have underlying allergies that cause skin disorders. If you notice any signs of itchiness displayed by excessive licking, scratching, and rubbing, a visit to the vet is the best bet. Hip dysplasia is common among Golden Retrievers, and this genetic disposition can follow over into Spangolds. Neutering a male dog has many associated health benefits , including preventing testicular cancer, reducing aggression, and stopping their instinctual desire for wandering and looking for a mate. Similarly, spaying a female will assist in preventing uterine infections or even breast cancer. It is recommended to do the spaying before her first heat, as this will further help prevent these complications. Neutering and spaying are highly recommended for general health benefits unless of course, you are planning on breeding. That said, if you want to breed a female Spangold, it is far better for her health to do so only after she has experienced at least one or two heat cycles. Minor Conditions. I grew up on a farm where we had all sorts of animals, from cows and horses to pigs and chickens. My love for animals led me to pursue a career in writing about them. I have been a pet care writer for over 5 years and have extensive knowledge of animal care, health, and behavior. His mother was an Springer Spaniel and father a Golden Retriever. We have had him since he was 8 weeks old. He is a fantastic dog full of energy and love. He is the softest dog when indoors, sitting on your lap and having cuddles and kisses whenever possible. Outdoors he is so athletic and strong! He loves fetch, canicross running, mountain biking, swimming and climbing mountains. We are going to try him out at surfing this weekend. He is intelligent and learns commands quickly but is wilful so needs to be trained. He is extremely friendly, greeting everyone he comes in contact with enthusiastically. The best way to determine the temperament of a mixed breed is to look up all breeds in the cross and know you can get any combination of any of the characteristics found in either breed. It is very common for breeders to breed multi-generation crosses. They are Spangold Retrievers. They are extremely loving and gentle, especially with children. They would rather be on your lap than anything else, except for maybe eating. Ziggy is 10 years old, and Max is a 4-month-old puppy in this picture. Max's momma is a purebred Springer Spaniel, black and white. Very intelligent and very food motivated but stubborn. Has a habit of chewing on things not meant to be chewed. I have had him since he was 12 weeks old. He's now a healthy, agile, fun boy being one years old. He is the first to answer the door to greet my guests. He stays by my side at all times and loves to be off leash in my non-fenced yard. He loves to swim and play with other dogs. He walks like he's a show dog with pride and extreme confidence. He's a quick learner when it comes to learning new things and absolutely loves agility and the beaches!!! He is very sweet and works to please. He loves kids and knows when to be gentle. He loves playing, vegetables, cuddling, water and taking walks. Gentle, aims to please, he learns extremely quick and will fetch you your shoes to go out and play. Very gentle and affectionate. She tends to follow her brother's lead a lot. She really has the look of a retriever, except for her black fur! He is very playful, but not too high energy, easy to train and eager to learn. Very outgoing and always wants to be where the action is! Took to the crate right away with no apprehension!

So, I wanted to look for something with a tray or something that catches or prevents the fall-out food. Her bowl would also get tipped over on its side after she finished eating. She is wild. My criteria for the bowls this time was mainly for Fira. Fira is the complicated one. Weston also has a bit of a longer snout than Fira, making it easier for him to reach his food. So, Fira needed a bowl that would be suitable for her non-existent snout and easy for clean-up. She needed something that would stay put on the floor, help prevent regurgitating and look good in the kitchen. Here are the 9 bowls I picked up for my French Bulldogs: Hint: Scroll down to the end of this post to find my 1 choice for dog food bowl. The bowls are really shallow and wide, so it helps small-snout and squishy-face dogs get into the bowl better. These are perfect for a neat eater aka: Weston! The tray around the bowl was littered with fallen food right away. Not sure how but it ended up ripping, so we had to throw it out, but I included it on this list as a good bowl for French bulldogs. Ceramics Raised Bowl : The design of this bowl is really nice, very modern and a cool shape. I could see this really as a nice accent piece in a contemporary kitchen. Wide Ceramic Dog Bowl : Super pretty dog bowl made of solid ceramic. This bowl is super wide and is taller at the back, which I thought would work for Fira. I think it was too large and the food got stuck at the back and top edges. So maybe not the best French Bulldog food bowl for Fira. But I think if your dog eats dry food or is bigger, this dog bowl is a decent choice! Slow Feeder Bowl : if your dog eats super fast, like Fira does, a dog bowl for fast eaters is a smart option. A slow bowl is great as it forces your French Bulldog to work around the bowl and gives them time to chew and digest — and not inhale their food. It makes eating meals a bit slower for Fira. Even though I found a solution for this bowl, I found it too cumbersome and a few too many added steps for her meal time. Love the slanted feature and Fira had a much better time eating without a huge mess. Elevated bowls are really beneficial for French Bulldogs, as it helps them swallow their food down better without regurgitating it up. This tilted dog bowl also came with silicone grips to stick onto the bottom of the wooden legs — nice! Sturdy grip on the bottom, large area for their face to move around and at an elevated angle. This is my 1 choice. Stainless steel dog bowls are not only durable and easy to clean, but they also have the added benefit of being bacteria-resistant. Unlike other materials such as plastic, which can develop scratches and grooves over time that can harbor bacteria, stainless steel is non-porous and smooth. There you have it — the best bowls for French Bulldogs so far. Hope you enjoyed it! If you have any recommendations, please add them in the comments! Related Posts.
