Because the food is such low quality, you have to feed a lot of it. And what goes in, must come out. This type of feeding was popular decades ago and I do remember my parents feeding our first dogs this way, but most people have moved on from this and are feeding their dogs in better ways now. Raw Food, BARF And Home-Made Diets Raw feeding is a diet that consists of mostly raw meat, edible bones and animal organs, though most practitioners also mix in small portions of fruit, veg and selected other foodstuffs. There are many people feel strongly that this is the best possible way to feed a dog. But I would caution most people that to feed this diet successfully, you need to do A LOT of research, gain a lot of knowledge and truly understand a dogs nutritional needs to make sure they get exactly what they need in the right amounts. Many people wonder if they can feed their puppy human foods, anything found in the fridge or larder. Furthermore, there are many human foods that are toxic to dogs that you should avoid at all costs. Too much of some nutrients can be bad in itself, but also prevent the absorption and use of other nutrients too. So supplementing a balanced diet is a bad thing to do. Can You Give Puppies Milk? Assuming you get your puppy at the recommended 8 weeks, they will have been fully weaned before you bring them home. Many puppies are intolerant of cows milk and drinking it leads to an upset tummy and diarrhea so you would do best to avoid giving your puppy any milk at all. You will likely be feeding your puppy a commercially available complete and balanced dog food, in which case you certainly should not supplement their food. Supplementing this will mean too much of one or more things, making it unbalanced which can actually lead to harm. But an excess amount of calcium in the diet of a Lab puppy can lead to skeletal development problems. So adding a calcium supplement to an already complete diet can actually do more harm than good. There may also be times your vet advises you to do so. But if feeding raw, you should know more about nutrition than I do. This is a hard question to answer and sadly I cannot give you a definite quantity or weight to feed them each day. Puppies grow at different rates, some are more active than others and there can be large differences between metabolisms too. However… The biggest determining factor is how concentrated the nutrients and calories are in the brand of food you feed them. High quality foods are nutrient rich and give a puppy all they need from quite small amounts of food. But cheaper brands are full of low quality and nutritionally empty fillers that mean a puppy needs considerably more to get what they need. Start by feeding your puppy according to the guidelines on the label of the puppy food you buy for them. Then see how their body develops. Puppies should not be fat! And do not feed them coffee or tea as they can contain caffeine, theobromine, and theophylline. These toxic substances can dangerously affect the heart and nervous system. Onions, garlic, raisins and grapes can be severely toxic in labradors. Raw meat is potential source of parasites and pathogenic bacteria for your puppy. Eggs yokes are an excellent source of protein. Raw eggs contain an enzyme called avidin, which decreases the absorption of biotin a B vitamin. This can, in extreme cease, lead to skin and coat problems. Just as with meat preparation for people. Small puppies are growing fast and are vulnerable to diets with a poor nutrient balance. It is very important you do your research before attempting to raw feed a small puppy. This is because raw fed dogs get messy. Socialization is important to the well-being and good behavior of every breed, even ultra-friendly Labs. Huskies, as mentioned, tend to be a bit more reserved, so socialization is vital for this mix. Training and Behavioral Traits For decades, dog training was all about establishing the pack leader. Leading trainers taught that there were only two choices: either your dog was the alpha, or you were the alpha. However, we know differently now. For a dog, there is no such thing as alpha, or dominance, or pack leader, or even anything similar to any of these concepts. As long as you provide your dog with his daily required resources, your interspecies family life is likely to go quite smoothly overall. In fact, the purebred Siberian Husky breed is known to exhibit some of these traits far more frequently than purebred Labrador Retrievers. This can make training more challenging and time-consuming if your Labsky puppy tends more towards the Husky side of his parentage. But whether such behavioral traits show up in your puppy or not, these behaviors are never about winning dominance over you or becoming the pack leader. These traits are either inbuilt breed-specific characteristics, or fear-based responses to perceived scarcity of needed resources. Ultimately, your puppy is dependent on you for every need that he has. Understanding this can eliminate your concern over alpha-type struggles. Huskador Exercise The Husky Lab mix comes from two active, energetic, working dog breed parents. A good way to stop sensitivities from forming is to give your Labsky a range of meat types. You can vary their diet by giving them fish such as salmon or even rabbit or venison. A Husky Lab Mix should eat 2 to 2. The amount of food a Husky Lab Mix should eat depends on their size a gender. Generally, a female Labsky would eat half a cup of food less than a male as they are smaller. If you are feeding a mixed diet of dry food and raw food meat , you should lower the amount of kibble you give your Labsky. From picking them up at the breeder at the age of 8 weeks until they are 6 months old, you should be feeding them three to four times a day. From 6 months to 1 year you can feed them twice a day. It is recommended to keep your Labsky on the same kibble the breeder has been feeding it for a few weeks and them slowly wean them off onto your preferred kibble or diet. It is important to switch dog food gradually otherwise it will cause digestive problems. Then from the age of 7 they can be moved onto special senior dog kibble as they are entering the 2nd half of their life. It is also a good idea to balance out kibble with fresh food such as chicken, beef or fish. Take a photo of the kibble bag so you can go out and buy it for yourself. Unfortunately this is because a Husky Lab mix is a moderate to heavy shedder. They have a double coat where the undercoat sheds seasonally as well as lighter, regular shedding throughout the year. Brushing A Labsky As Labskies shed so much, it is really important to stay on top of regular, frequent brushing to remove dead or loose fur. If they are properly introduced to water from a young age they will learn to love swimming. It is very important to properly introduce your Labsky to the water because if they are improperly introduced they will likely avoid it at all costs in the future. A shallow dog friendly lake with a gradually inclined shoreline is ideal place to introduce your Labsky to swimming. Alternatively, if you are at the beach watch out for rips and large waves. Get your dog used to the water. Encourage your Husky Lab Mix to walk into the water to a place where they can still comfortably stand up. Reward your dog for going into the water with a treat. Provide support. When their feet lift off the ground assume a supportive position by placing one hand beneath their rump. The most important thing when teaching your dog to swim is to ensure their bottom is aligned with their head. You can also get your Labsky a dog life jacket to help them swim. Let your Labsky go. Once your dog has build up confidence point them towards the shoreline and let them swim in. Stay close by your dog and correct their swimming technique if their rump starts sinking.
