Some are pretty chill and would rather lay around, while others are really hyper and active. You need to know that positive reinforcement works best for Golden Retrievers. It was my understanding that when the cord was chewed down to the base of the belly it was sometimes difficult to get it to stop bleeding. I took the hemostat and pinched the umbilical cord about 2 inches from the base of the pups belly then cut the cord rather than let Raven chew it off. I kept the hemostat on the cord for about 2 minutes to let it clout. The umbilical cord dries up quickly and then within a day or 2 it falls off. Raven was a good mama and took care of her poops. Puppy eyes and ears are closed at this stage and puppies army crawl around the whelping box looking for a teat to suckle. We did everything we could to make sure our pups stayed warm by adding a watt heat lamp to the whelping box and portable heating unit in the puppy room. As I mentioned Raven stayed in the whelping box most of week 1 and of course… the puppy piles! One thing I learned is if I had a puppy on my lap then do not let Raven lick those areas or be prepared for a little accident on your lap. While caring for Raven and her litter Raven was really blowing out her coat that first week, but as time went on it slowed down. I heard from other friends this is common and that Raven blew out her coat much less than other mama dogs. While not exhibiting the enthusiasm of Liberty during the Umbrella Stability test Trooper had a more curious attitude towards the opened Umbrella as he approached, sniffed, and explored showing a more calm demeanor than Liberty. The response of the other puppies on the Umbrella Stability Test ranged from slowly moving away from the umbrella to cowering and running away from the umbrella. They fell in love with Buster on the spot and adopted him into their POOCH program where he is being trained at a prison to be a service dog. We kept our Lil Bear to train as a service dog. From the beginning, we knew he was a little softy, but he passed the retrieval test with flying colors so we had high hopes for him. We started taking him on outings to the book store, grocery stores, and shopping malls. He never showed the confidence we hoped and while he would eventually adapt to places after several visits he was always hesitant in new situations. Our litters are spoken for early, often before they're born, and we encourage new owners to visit their pups as often as they like until the day they can take them home. Our puppies can be watched and heard! All parents have been x-rayed, and have OFA certificates for both hips and elbows. We have the dam's certified x-rays on premises. All parents regularly see veterinary ophthalmologists and have current CERF certificates. The puppies are born in a 4' x 4' whelping box with pig rails for safety. It can be viewed on our live feed starting a day or two before our dogs go into labor. We have sound on during the birth it can be pretty exciting , but turn it off after the puppies are born. Generally, one of them escapes around 24 days and we move them all to an 8' x 8' pen in the basement. We have another camera there, and once they are in their pen, we turn the audio back on so the world can watch and hear them play. We don't introduce them to the outdoors until the day they leave us. We don't train them -- they train themselves. They need to be wormed again at 10 weeks, and we provide the solution, syringe and instructions to the new owners. We vaccinate for distemper and parvo at four weeks and again the day they leave. If we are convenient to their new owners, we will vaccinate again at twelve weeks and then annually. This provides us a means of monitoring the dog's health in the future. We give distemper and parvo shots for the life of the dog. Most important may be the DVD of the litter's history, including a recording of the puppies' birth if it happened on camera , though that generally isn't ready for many months sometimes years after they leave us. Even in the heat, she still pesters to walk and we walk about two miles a day. She also loves to ride in the car and she just sits there and watches. Ultrasounds can be done at around 28 days from mating if there is concern for the female or the puppies. Ultrasound will give us an approximate puppy count although not as accurate as an x-ray. X-rays are done 7 to 10 days prior to the birthing process, x-rays give a pretty accurate number of pups to be expected which is important for us to know to make sure we have enough medication for Mom and babies. They also let us know if there is any need for medical intervention like a C-section. We can tell by monitoring the expectant females temperature of how close she is to whelping. A normal adult dog temperature is .Expectant moms will generally stop eating and some moms will start throwing up; this gives us the final opportunity to make sure we have all things ready. The whelping box will be warmed and ready, scissors to cut umbilicals if needed, dental floss to tie the umbilicals if there is a problem, a bulb syringe to clear the nose and mouth of fluid, towels to dry the puppies, we use dopram for any puppies that have a hard time starting to breathe and an iodine tincture to sterilize umbilical. The first stage of labor can last up to 12 hours this is the time that the cervix is effacing and dilating. We give Mom calsorb in between puppies to keep her labor moving along, calsorb is a calcium supplement easily and quickly depleted during labor and contractions. Some fatalities can be due to lack of calcium. We also keep lactated ringers, puppy formula we use a couple of different brands, Miracle nipples, tube feeding supplies and only use as needed. We order plasma which is a colostrum supplement and only use as needed. When Mom has finished the whelping process we give her what is called a clean out shot this is oxytocin. We place a colored collar on each puppy as it is born which will remain until the day it goes to its new home. By recording the color of the collar, the time of the birth, the weight and the sex of the puppy it helps us identify each individual pup easily and quickly. Making sure puppies are thriving, gaining weight, staying warm and being fed adequately is important to the survival the first couple of weeks.
