Featured Products Welcome to the Home of Legacy Farm Goldens The heart of our farm is raising healthy, structurally sound dogs, who are a true best friend and family companion. We are located 20 minutes outside of Richmond, Virginia in rural Goochland County. As a testament to that philosophy, socialization is something we actively engage in to ensure that each of our pups will become a loving part of their family. Although performance, health, and structural soundness of the parents do not guarantee the offspring. The probability of improving and maintaining positive traits in the breed through conscientious breeding is greater. Our dogs are carefully chosen from lines that have been researched for sound temperaments plus hereditary diseases and conditions. All of our parents must conform to the AKC standard for the breed. They have completed heart, eye, elbow, and hip exams. We are also completing DNA screening and working with other lines that have been DNA screened to help ensure pups are not affected by genetic conditions common to our breed. This allows our puppies' new families to be confident that their pup's health has been built upon continued high documented standards. Availability of puppies and conditions of sale are at the sole discretion of the individual breeder. You are not obligated to purchase a puppy from the breeders whose names you obtain from GRCA puppy referral. Our english golden retriever puppies are raised in our home with us, their parents, aunts, cousins and sisters. We are a small family breeder with all of our dogs and puppies living in our home with a lovely large one acre, fenced-in yard just 20 minutes southwest of downtown Richmond, VA. They are socialized with us and our other dogs in our home. Absolutely NO cages, puppy pens are used occasionally to keep order in the house, but never kennels, or runs or outdoor doghouses. Although we do not use crates as a general rule ourselves, many Shadymist puppy families and friends do with great success. We agree that crate use is highly recommended for at least the first few months as it aids in house-training, prevents boredom destruction, maintains a safe environment for the puppy from curiosity mishaps, as well as a peaceful place to nap with a toy and a blanket. Your English Cream Golden Retriever puppy is raised from birth to your home within our home with constant love, attention and interactive stimulation, all of which promote a healthy, stable people-loving personality with good basic manners!

However, as their genetics play a role here, some backcross generations like F1b, F1bb, F2b, and F2bb may show more Poodle-like characteristics, such as being more active and playful. It has also been reported that Mini and Toy Bernedoodles may be somewhat more energetic than Standard Bernedoodles. In general, the perfect dog! All in all, Bernedoodles are sweet and friendly Doods. As much as they love playing fetch and their daily walkies, Bernedoodles want nothing more than to snuggle up on the couch with you after a long day. Of course, early socialization is crucial to raise a well-socialized and confident Bernedoodle. For this, make sure you introduce your pup to adults and children, other dogs, and cats from an early age. Easy To Train From the highly intelligent Bernese Mountain Dog and Poodle parents, the Bernedoodle has inherited its smarts and the ability to pick up new tricks and habits very quickly. See Also: Click the image As with any other dog, the key here is positive reinforcement and early introduction to good behavior and manners. Moreover, owners report that Berneodoodles respond especially well to positive reinforcement with tasty treats. Something worth remembering! The downside of having such a witty pup is that Bernedoodles can easily become bored and start showing undesired behaviors. Daily mental and physical stimulation are crucial to keep your Dood occupied with fun and interesting activities and games, and prevent them from becoming stressed or destructive. Poodles are highly active, whereas the Bernese Mountain Dog is more relaxed and laid-back. By combining these two outdoorsy breeds, we get rather active Bernedoodles that enjoy their daily walkies and playtime. Additionally, Toy and Mini Bernedoodles may also be more active compared to larger Standard Bernedoodles. Due to their size, Standard Bernedoodles would do better in a spacious home with a fenced backyard, where they have plenty of space to roam around. In contrast, smaller Mini and Toy Bernedoodles can also live perfectly well in apartments provided that they get to exercise each day. Are They Good With Strangers? Bernedoodles are outgoing and social, and enjoy being at the center of the attention. But as with any other breed, the key to raising confident and well-rounded adults lies in proper socialization and training. However, sometimes their protective mode may kick in, and they can be slightly cautious of new people. In addition to that, because Bernedoodles can be a little bit sensitive, they may also be a bit standoffish around new people and in new surroundings. Nonetheless, if your pup has met plenty of new people and other animals, they should generally do well around strangers. Unfortunately, this can also make the Bernedoodle a bit harder to train, especially during the adolescence period. Just make sure you stay consistent with training, and your pup will soon catch up. Fortunately, Bernedoodles usually grow out of their stubbornness as they mature emotionally. Of course, they may still show their stubborn side from time to time. Furthermore, their sensitivity is also something worth considering when it comes to training. Although we always recommend training puppies and dogs only with positive reinforcement, the Bernedoodle especially needs a gentle and loving approach. After all, they come from the Swiss Alps, where one of their main responsibilities has been herding cattle. If your pup has inherited this Bernedoodle personality trait, they may try to herd smaller family members, such as children, smaller dogs, and cats. Fortunately, the excessive need to herd can be prevented with proper training and socialization. If left undealt with, it can become a behavioral concern over time. Separation Anxiety As outgoing, loving, and affectionate as Bernedoodles are, their ability to bond so easily comes with its negatives. Namely, it can often lead to separation anxiety. Separation anxiety in dogs can manifest in various ways. Typically, dogs start excessively whining, barking, chewing, pacing, or digging. Some pups lose their appetite, others start leaving accidents around the house. Not only is this unpleasant for the owner, it also causes emotional distress to the dog. If you work long hours away from home, one option would be to sign your pup up for doggy daycare or hire a dog walker. For this reason, Bernedoodles might not be the best choice for people who have to leave them alone for long periods of time, including office hours. See Also: Click the image High Energy Levels Although we listed their energy levels as a positive for many reasons, it might also be a dealbreaker for many dog owners. As the Bernedoodle temperament can lean on either side of its lineage, some Bernedoodles are naturally much more active, just like their Poodle parents. These Doodles love to hike, jog, swim, and do almost anything outside. And if the pup is highly active, it can become a bit too much to handle for some people. Very active Bernedoodles may even need up to two hours of exercise each day. Are Bernedoodles Suitable For You? So, does the Bernedoodle temperament match your own lifestyle and family dynamics? Bernedoodles are the perfect pets for almost anyone. The Bernedoodle is a social and affectionate companion that thrives in human company. As an added bonus, the Bernedoodle comes in three different sizes. Firstly, Bernedoodles are highly intelligent and moderately active, meaning that these dogs require plenty of mental and physical stimulation every day to avoid destructive behaviors. Secondly, since Bernedoodles are social and affectionate dogs, they are prone to separation anxiety. However, with early training and socialization, puppies usually grow out of it once they reach adulthood. In terms of other negatives, the Bernedoodle is also rather expensive and high-maintenance. On top of that, there are all the ongoing costs of dog ownership , including regular trips to the groomers every few months, and time investment of daily grooming activities at home. On the other hand, as some puppies tend to be stubborn, it may take a little bit longer for them, and require more patience on your end. With consistent training, puppies can usually be mostly house trained within a month or two, especially with positive reinforcement and yummy treats. Realistically, Bernedoodles can be fully house trained somewhere between 3 and 6 months, sometimes even up to a year. We recommend you start your new puppy on potty training as soon as you bring them home to successfully establish good bathroom behaviors. We hope you gained some new insights into the Bernedoodle temperament, along with its pros and cons, so you can make an informed decision beforehand. Although a playful pup sounds endearing, consider how many games of fetch or tag you want to play each day, and whether you have kids or other dogs who can stand in as playmates for the dog. Click here for more information on this characteristic Bernedoodle Overview The Bernedoodle is a companion dog, through and through. The breed inherits the intelligence of its Poodle parents and the charming, goofy, happy-go-lucky temperament of the Bernese Mountain Dog. Sometimes they get more Poodle traits, and other times they more closely resemble the Bernese. That said, fans of Bernedoodles adore their friendliness, playfulness, intelligence, and affection. They also tend to be more hypoallergenic, which is a blessing for allergy sufferers. In addition to their personalities, Bernedoodles can differ in appearance. Their coats can be curly and wavy or straight and come in a variety of colors. They come in three sizes; tiny, miniature, and standard. These sizes are determined by the size of the Poodle parent, which can be toy, mini, or standard. Bernedoodles are fairly adaptable and go with the flow. Smaller sized Bernedoodles make better apartment pets than Standard Bernedoodles, who do best with a yard to burn off energy. This breed has moderate exercise needs that are usually met with at least one long daily walk. Bernedoodle Highlights Gentle and loving: Bernedoodles are known for their gentle and loving personalities. They are good with children and other pets. Intelligent and trainable: Bernedoodles are intelligent dogs that are easy to train. They can learn basic commands quickly and can be trained to perform more complex tasks. Hypoallergenic: Bernedoodles are considered to be hypoallergenic, which means they are less likely to shed and cause allergies in people. Active but adaptable: Bernedoodles are active dogs that need a moderate amount of exercise. However, they are also adaptable and can do well in apartments or homes with small yards. Loyal and devoted: Bernedoodles are loyal and devoted dogs that make great companions. They are always happy to see their owners and love to cuddle. If you are looking for a loving, intelligent, and hypoallergenic dog, the Bernedoodle may be the right breed for you. Lifespan: Bernedoodles have a lifespan of 10 to 12 years. Coat: Bernedoodles have a wavy or curly coat that can be either single- or double-coated. Colors: Bernedoodles can be a variety of colors, including black, brown, white, and cream. Bernedoodles are a relatively new breed, so there is still some debate about their exact origins. However, it is believed that they were first bred in the United States in the early s. The goal was to create a dog that was hypoallergenic and had the best qualities of both the Bernese Mountain Dog and the Poodle. Bernedoodles are becoming increasingly popular dogs. They are a good choice for families with children and other pets. They are also a good choice for people with allergies. If you are thinking about getting a Bernedoodle, be sure to do your research and find a reputable breeder. Bernedoodle History The Bernedoodle is a relatively new breed. While this is considered a designer breed, they do appear in shelters, and rescue groups that focus on Poodles and Bernese Mountain Dogs will sometimes work with mixes of those breeds. There is no reason that you have to rely on a breeder for a Bernedoodle, and you should always adopt before shopping. Bernedoodle Size There are three sizes of Bernedoodle: tiny, miniature, and standard. These result from the size of the Poodle parent, which can be toy, mini, or standard size. The Tiny Bernedoodle stands at 12 to 17 inches tall at the shoulder, and weighs about 10 to 24 pounds. The Miniature Bernedoodle stands at 18 to 22 inches tall and weighs 25 to 49 pounds. The Standard Bernedoodle stands at 23 to 29 inches and weigh 70 to 90 pounds. Males are generally larger than females. Bernedoodle Personality Bernedoodles seem to get many of the best personality traits from the Bernese Mountain Dog and Poodle breeds. Exactly which traits they inherit from their parents can differ a bit, though, and individual personalities of dogs within the breed vary. Bernedoodles tend to be highly intelligent, hardworking when necessary, loyal, and just a bit goofy. They are good with children and other dogs, provided they have been well socialized. Once they begin training, their intelligence helps them pick up commands more easily than other dogs. Bernedoodles can have high energy levels and crave attention and at least moderate exercise. They do best in homes where they are not left alone for long periods of time. Tiny and Miniature Bernedoodles do better with apartment and city life than Standard Bernedoodles. Generally, they want nothing more than to be with their humans and are just as ready to go outside and play with them as they are to join them on the couch for cuddles. Bernedoodle Health Bernedoodles are generally healthy dogs, but they are prone to some health problems, including: Hip dysplasia : This is a condition in which the hip joint does not fit together properly, causing pain and lameness. Elbow dysplasia : This is a similar condition that affects the elbow joint. Bloat: This is a life-threatening condition that occurs when the stomach twists, cutting off blood flow. Progressive retinal atrophy PRA : This is a degenerative eye disease that can lead to blindness. Hereditary cataracts : These are cloudy areas in the lens of the eye that can cause vision problems. Demodex mange : This is a skin condition caused by mites. Inflammatory bowel disease IBD : This is a chronic condition that causes inflammation of the digestive tract. Hypothyroidism : This is a condition in which the thyroid gland does not produce enough hormones. It is important to take your Bernedoodle to the vet for regular checkups to monitor their health and catch any potential problems early. You should also be aware of the signs and symptoms of these health problems so that you can seek treatment promptly if necessary. Here are some tips for keeping your Bernedoodle healthy: Feed them a healthy diet that is appropriate for their age and activity level. Make sure they get plenty of exercise. Keep them at a healthy weight. Brush their teeth regularly. Take them to the vet for regular checkups. By following these tips, you can help your Bernedoodle live a long and healthy life. Bernedoodle Care Tiny and Miniature Bernedoodles are more suited to apartment life, while Standard Bernedoodles do better with a nice yard to run around. They love being around their humans, so the less time they spend alone, the better. Like Poodles, Bernedoodles are quite intelligent, which means they can learn bad habits just as easily as good ones. It is important to keep up with training. Early socialization and exposure to other dogs and humans is always a good idea and will help keep them well-behaved when meeting new people or pets. Bernedoodle Feeding The appropriate amount to feed a Bernedoodle depends on their size, age, and activity level, which means it is highly individualized. You should ask your veterinarian for dietary recommendations that suit your particular dog. Sometimes Bernedoodles can have straighter coats, which shed more and are less hypoallergenic. The thickness of their coat helps this breed thrive in cool temperatures while providing them a fair amount of protection from the heat of summer months, as well. The color of Bernedoodle coats have quite a range. Some are pure black, others are black and white, and others are black and brown. Sometimes Bernedoodles are tri-colored with patches of black, white, and brown. They may even have other colors, as well. The most popular coat colors and markings for people seeking a Bernedoodle tend to resemble the tri-colored Bernese Mountain Dog. Because they shed less, they need to be brushed more often to prevent their coat from getting matted. Their coat must also be trimmed every few months, depending on how quickly it grows. Bernedoodle Children And Other Pets Bernedoodles are excellent for families with children, though it is always important to make sure children are instructed on how to properly treat animals, especially with Tiny and Miniature Bernedoodles that may be injured more easily. This breed is affectionate and loves to play, and they absolutely adore spending time with their families. Bernedoodles usually do well with other dogs, but it is important to begin socialization at an early age and keep up with it to make sure they are comfortable around new animals. Bernedoodle Breed Organizations Finding a reputable dog breeder is one of the most important decisions you will make when bringing a new dog into your life. Reputable breeders are committed to breeding healthy, well-socialized puppies that will make great companions. They will screen their breeding stock for health problems, socialize their puppies from a young age, and provide you with lifetime support. On the other hand, backyard breeders are more interested in making a profit than in producing healthy, well-adjusted dogs. They may not screen their breeding stock for health problems, and they may not socialize their puppies properly. As a result, puppies from backyard breeders are more likely to have health problems and behavioral issues More Info For You. What is the Bernedoodle coat Like? Every Bernedoodle coat is different. The curlier the coat the less it will shed. The straighter the coat the more it will shed. Most Bernedoodles have the wavy hair coat that is low to no shed hair type. Most people with allergies are ok with this hair type. Bernedoodles with a more curly coat are more like the poodle and will not shed. It is very rare to have a bernedoodle with straight hair. Brushing your Bernedoodle twice a week will make shedding less noticeable. Bernedoodles need to be brushed at least once a week to prevent mating. It is necessary to have your Bernedoodle clipped every few months, you can do this yourself or have a professional do it. What size is a Bernedoodle? Bernedoodles come in different sizes just like the poodle. They come in standard, mini, and micro mini. Standard: These range in size from pounds inches at the shoulder. The reason for this huge range is because standard poodles range in size tremendously. I have had standard Bernedoodle adult weight only 45 pounds, but that is uncommon. An experienced breeder should be able to tell you within about pounds how big your puppy will be. In some occasions it is impossible to know. Mini: These range in size from pounds and inches at the shoulder. Micro Mini: These range in size from pounds. What Colors do Bernedoodles Come In? The term "Furnishings" refers to the long hair on the extremities of the dog including the head and tail. When our Bernese is crossed with a Poodle the resulting dog is furnished. If one of our Bernese is crossed with certain bernedoodles, the result is unfurnished. We've had many families specifically ask for an unfurnished bernedoodle. Some families don't like the beard of the furnished bernedoodle or they love the bernese look, but like the bernedoodle temperament more. Here are some photo examples: F1, F1b, F2 What does all of that mean? They were bred solely for companionship, so they love attention and lots of cuddles from their families. Bernedoodles are just as happy curling up on the couch as they are hiking a trail alongside their humans. They're playful and active dogs who can be willful as puppies but are highly trainable thanks to their big brains. Appearance Though Bernese mountain dogs have a black, tan, and white uniform, poodles can have a much wider range of coat colors. Because of this, Bernedoodles can vary in color. While they're typically tricolor like their mountain dog mom or dad, they can also be pure black, black and white, or a random mix. Their fur can also be curly like their poodle parent or straighter like a Bernese mountain dog. As a general rule, the straighter the coat, the more your Bernedoodle will shed. In both cases, the thickness of a Bernedoodle mane makes this breed suitable for colder temperatures. A curly Bernedoodle coat is typically sought-after because it's considered hypoallergenic. While no dog is percent allergen-friendly, this breed's coat can be a good option for those who tend to sneeze, sniffle, or itch around dogs. Bernedoodle breeders typically offer a tiny, miniature, and standard size, which allows for flexibility with the care and living needs of each pup. A smaller mix could easily live in an apartment as long as she gets plenty of walks and exercise. The standard Bernedoodle can reach up to 29 inches in height and weigh up to 90 pounds. A mini is between 18—22 inches tall and weighs 20—45 pounds. A "tiny," bred from a toy poodle, is only 12—17 inches and weighs 10—24 pounds, according to the United Bernedoodle Registry. Temperament Affectionate and playful, Bernedoodles are a perfect family pet. They are especially fond of younger kids and provide a wonderful lifelong companion as children grow into adults. Though they're intelligent pups , they tend to be goofy and love attention from their humans. Though they can't get enough of their family, Bernedoodles might first be apprehensive, sensitive, and skittish around strangers. As with all breeds, it's important to socialize your Bernedoodle puppy so she'll be comfortable and affectionate around new people, too. She can be very charming and charismatic with positive reinforcement training. Personal space is not a part of their vocabulary, and they should not be left alone much. Loneliness can result in separation anxiety, which could cause nervous habits like whining or chewing. They will end feeling more fulfilled and have less anxious, OCD behaviors. And no matter the size, this hybrid is especially gentle-natured and loves children. They're so gentle, in fact, they don't make good guard dogs: They bark infrequently and are more likely to befriend an intruder than scare them away. Care Most often, a Bernedoodle will have a wavy or curly coat that's ideal for those with allergies. In some cases, a Bernedoodle can have a straighter coat similar to that of a Bernese mountain dog. This means they'll shed more and might not agree with an owner who's allergic to pet dander. Once the litter is a few weeks old, a Bernedoodle breeder will be able to tell what kind of coat each puppy will have in order to match the right dog to the right owner. But with that curly coat comes a greater need for grooming. Bernedoodles don't shed much , so they'll need frequent brushing to prevent painful matting. Most doodles love being brushed, and the routine allows the owner to bond with their dog. Keep in mind a very curly, "hypoallergenic" dog will need a haircut every few months. Just because they're low-shedding doesn't mean they're low maintenance! They'll need daily walkies to burn off their energy, but so long as their physical needs are met, they likely won't turn to undesirable behaviors like digging to keep themselves entertained. They'll also need consistent social stimulation to reinforce positive behaviors. The more exposure they have to new pets and humans, the more likely they are to be well-behaved when introduced to a foreign person or situation. A Bernedoodle's smarts makes her typically easy to train. It also means she can learn behaviors good or bad quickly—that's why it's important to keep up with training, even past her puppy days. Training a Bernedoodle requires positive reinforcement and, in some cases, a high level of patience. Should the puppy inherit the Bernese's willfullness or the poodle's high energy, they'll need more of your time and attention. Health The Bernedoodle lifespan is 12—18 years. Luckily, the hybrid breed does not inherit the same health risks as the Bernese mountain dog. The Bernese side of their lineage has a life expectancy of only seven years and a high rate of cancer , hip and elbow dysplasia , heart disease , and epilepsy. And while Bernedoodles are far healthier than a purebred Bernese, they can still be "predisposed to hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, ocular diseases, and some allergies ," Christman says. Just be on the lookout for [warning signs like] excessive drooling and ability to gain some weight quickly. Hot spots are primarily caused by excessive licking or chewing of an area. This is why it's so important to keep up with grooming—a Bernedoodle is more likely to pick at their skin when her coat is dirty and matted. History Being a relatively new breed, the history book on Bernedoodles is a short one. After years of breeding Bernese mountain dogs, Sherry Rupke of SwissRidge Bernedoodles wanted a way to make the purebreds more allergen-friendly and free from the health issues that plague the breed. Thus, the Bernedoodle or at least the first intentional pairing of a Bernese mountain dog and a poodle was born in .Now, dog owners everywhere have fallen in love with the loyal, loving breed that looks like a huggable teddy bear. Understanding the Temperament of a Bernedoodle Bernedoodles, also known as Bernese Mountain Poo, are a delightful doodle dog breed, that combines the best of both worlds — the loyalty of the Bernese Mountain Dog and the intelligence of the Poodle. Breeding Bernese Mountain Dogs with Poodles has resulted in this amazing breed that is gaining popularity among dog lovers who appreciate the unique qualities of a mountain dog and poodle mix. If you are considering getting a Bernedoodle , it is important to familiarize yourself with their specific personality traits and requirements. In this article, we will explore the characteristics that make the Bernedoodle temperament so attractive. Early Socialization Early socialization is crucial for Bernedoodles to become well-rounded, confident dogs who can interact positively with pets and strangers. Keep in mind that some Bernedoodles may be more cautious or fearful than others in new situations. Bernedoodles are incredibly loyal and affectionate, making them the perfect family pets and companions. Their devotion to their family members is unmatched, and they quickly become attached to their human pack. With Bernedoodles being one of the popular doodle breeds, they often outgrow their stubbornness as they mature, making them easier to train over time. This is an advantage over some purebred dogs that may retain stubborn traits. While their loyalty and affection are endearing, Bernedoodles can also be protective of their family. They excel at learning new commands and tricks, making them a joy to work with for dog owners who enjoy training sessions. With consistent training and positive reinforcement, Bernedoodles can become well-behaved therapy dogs or excellent companion dogs. One potential downside to their intelligence is that Bernedoodles can quickly become bored if not provided with adequate mental and physical stimulation. Ensuring your Bernedoodle has plenty of engaging activities and exercise will help prevent them from becoming bored and keep them happy and content. Playful and Energetic Bernedoodle puppies are known for their playful, energetic, and easy-to-train nature, making them fantastic companions for families with children and medium-sized dogs. They love to play, run, and explore, requiring daily physical activity to keep them healthy and happy. Regular walks, playtime at the park, and interactive toys are just a few ways to keep your Bernedoodle engaged and satisfied. Some may be more active than others, making it crucial to work with a reputable breeder to choose a puppy that has the temperament and personality that matches your lifestyle and family activity preferences. One of the many perks of owning a Bernedoodle is their ability to get along with other pets. They are known for being friendly and loving towards other animals, including other dogs and cats, making them great additions to households with multiple pets. However, early socialization is essential for ensuring your Bernedoodle develops positive relationships with other animals and prevents fear or aggression. Always remeber the importance of early socialization and strategies for preventing anxiety in these loving dogs. Preventing Separation Anxiety Bernedoodles can be prone to separation anxiety due to their affectionate and loving nature. This issue can manifest as crying, whining or barking when left alone for extended periods. Because of this natural curiosity, Bernedoodles require regular mental stimulation. In fact, they may be reserved and careful when they first meet someone. What Is the History of the Bernedoodle? First created by breeder Sherry Rupke in , the bernedoodle hails from Canada and traces its genetics back to a mix of the Bernese mountain dog and the standard poodle. The resulting mix of these two intelligent, loyal, and loving breeds led to an affectionate pup with the gentle nature of the Bernese mountain dog and the intelligent, loyal attitude of the standard poodle. Most bernedoodles exhibit an even split of genetics between their parents and appear with Bernese mountain dog markings and the short, curly fur of the standard poodle. However, because this is not a purebred dog it is a crossbreed, also sometimes called a hybrid dog , there is no breed standard. So the exact characteristics of your bernedoodle will vary based on their parents and the specifications the breeder is selecting for. There are three sizes of bernedoodle around today — tiny, miniature, and standard — though the standard remains the most commonly seen. Bernedoodles with the tri-color pattern of Bernese mountain dogs are the most popular, and this breed is loved for its gentle nature, loving attitude, and energetic friendliness. They make a perfect choice for a family dog or for first-time dog owners that want a playful dog without extreme exercise and high-maintenance care needs. What Do Bernedoodles Look Like? This dog ranges in size from small to slightly larger than a medium-sized dog, and they have friendly faces complete with floppy ears. Tiny bernedoodles will stand between 10 and 17 inches and weigh between 10 and 24 pounds, while miniatures will stand between 18 and 22 inches tall and weigh between 25 and 49 pounds. The standard-sized bernedoodle will stand between 23 and 29 inches tall and weigh between 50 and 90 pounds. The standard size of this pup is generally the most popular, but the tiny and miniature versions are also fairly sought after for their cute teddy bear-like appearance. Typically, the coloration of the coat will appear much like the Bernese mountain dog, while the coat is short and curly or wavy, thanks to their poodle genetics. They get along well with children and other animals, and their energetic nature makes them a great companion for playing in the park or going on a long walk outdoors. This dog is easily trained, friendly, and eager to please despite a streak of stubbornness. They love spending time with their family members learning new tricks. Bernedoodles learn fast thanks to their higher-than-average intelligence, and they enjoy giving affection as much as receiving it. Are Bernedoodles Affectionate? Bernedoodles are known for being a highly affectionate breed, and they love to receive attention as much as they love to give it. This dog makes strong bonds with their family and will enjoy spending as much time with you as possible simply cuddling, playing, or taking walks. Are Bernedoodles Good With Kids? Bernedoodles have a gentle nature and are typically good with kids. They love to play with children and show affection, though they might play rough with very young children. Overall, if your dog has training and your children know how to properly interact with dogs, this pup will easily blend into a family with children. This means that they are likely to get along with other animals easily and will make friends with both dogs and cats that they meet. However, the temperament of your dog can vary based on their personality, so always be cautious when introducing a new animal to your bernedoodle and monitor their first interactions closely. Are Bernedoodles Aggressive? Bernedoodles are not known for being aggressive or for having a high prey drive. This means that they are unlikely to attack or develop aggressive behavioral traits. However, they need a lot of socializing and time spent with their family to prevent anxiety or boredom from becoming destructive behaviors. Do Bernedoodles Bark a Lot? Bernedoodles are generally quiet, moderate barkers and will only bark loudly when they need to. Your dog might get excited and bark quite a bit, or they may see something suspicious around your property and alert you to it. Are Bernedoodles Intelligent? Bernedoodles are a fairly intelligent breed, mostly thanks to their poodle parentage. They learn commands and new tricks easily and are very sensitive to the needs of their owners. This high intelligence also means that your bernedoodle will need lots of physical and mental stimulation to prevent them from getting bored or engaging in destructive behaviors. Are Bernedoodles Easy to Train? Bernedoodles can be easy to train thanks to their high intelligence and their eagerness to please their owners, but they also have a strong streak of stubbornness thanks to their Bernese mountain dog lineage. Proper training and socialization should be started in puppyhood to help them grow out of their puppy rebelliousness and set the stage for easier training as they mature. Are Bernedoodles Energetic? Bernedoodles often have a lot of energy, and this dog will need a moderate level of exercise to stay happy. Bernedoodles are very playful and will want to spend lots of time with their families outdoors, playing, walking, or running around with their toys. Two long walks daily and time spent playing with their toys is a good amount of exercise for this pup and will use up their high energy levels. Are Bernedoodles Good Apartment Dogs? A miniature or tiny-sized bernedoodle might be a better choice for an apartment dog as long as they get lots of time outside to play and enough space to move around in while inside your apartment. Are Bernedoodles Good Watchdogs? The bernedoodle is very loyal and protective of its owners, and they make good watchdogs as a result. This dog is unlikely to bark unless they see something suspicious, which can be helpful if you are looking for a good watchdog, and their larger size might scare away potential intruders. Plus, this dog is typically intelligent and alert, both good traits for a watchdog. Are Bernedoodles Good Service Dogs? Due to their eager-to-please nature, high intelligence, and loving attitude, the bernedoodle does make for a good service dog. The standard size of this breed can be trained as a guide dog or mobility assistance dog, and all sizes of bernedoodle can help out as medical alert or psychiatric service dogs. Bernedoodles love learning new things and quickly pick up even complex commands, making them a good choice for a service dog or therapy dog. How to Care for a Bernedoodle Bernedoodles are energetic dogs that need to spend lots of time with their family, as they crave affection and can become anxious when left alone for too long. This companion dog should never spend more than 8 hours home alone, and they should have lots of toys to play with to keep them mentally stimulated when you are not around. You will need to give your bernedoodle at least two long walks per day and some playtime out in the yard with their toys. Make sure to train your bernedoodle to prevent any stubbornness or behavioral issues from occurring, and take the time to socialize your dog from puppyhood so that they get along with children or other animals. Your bernedoodle will need to be brushed a few times a week, especially if their coat is very curly, and will need regular grooming to ensure their hair stays out of their eyes. Additionally, your bernedoodle will need a diet of high-quality wet or dry food split into two or three meals a day and lots of love from its family to stay healthy and happy. Do You Need to Groom a Bernedoodle? You will need to groom your bernedoodle through regular brushings, especially if they have very curly fur that is prone to becoming tangled. Brush your dog several times a week and take them to a groomer several times a year every three to four months is recommended for a full bath, help with deshedding, and to trim up any fur that may be making them uncomfortable or getting in their eyes. Do Bernedoodles Shed? Bernedoodles can shed, but depending on whether the poodle or Bernese mountain dog trait is the strongest, they might not shed a lot. Bernedoodles with straighter, longer fur will require less brushing, but they are also more prone to shedding fur throughout the day. What Should a Bernedoodle Eat? Your bernedoodle should be eating a diet consisting of high-quality dry or wet dog food that is supplemented occasionally with healthy treats. How much you feed your bernedoodle each day depends on how large your dog is and whether or not they are a puppy or fully grown. Daily food amounts can range from 1 to 7 cups, split into two or three meals. Consult with a veterinarian if you need advice or feeding recommendations for your bernedoodle. While the bernedoodle is a generally healthy breed, there are a few health issues that they may be predisposed to, such as hip and elbow dysplasia, eye and heart diseases, allergies, skin issues like hot spots , and Von Willebrand disease. Taking good care of your dog and ensuring you go to regular vet visits will help to counteract any health issues or catch health problems before they become too serious. How Long Do Bernedoodles Live? The bernedoodle breed is known to live between 12 and 18 years; the smaller sizes of this dog generally have longer lifespans than the standard size, as is the case with most larger dogs. Are Bernedoodles Expensive? This price has such a large range due to the many factors that go into bernedoodle breeding, such as size, appearance, and desirable traits. The best way to find a reputable breeder to purchase from is to perform an internet search or to ask families and friends in the areas that you live in. Make sure when researching bernedoodle breeders that you pick one with proper licenses and certifications, and that the living conditions of the breeding dogs and their puppies are humane. Everything from their size, hypoallergenic potential, color, weight and demeanor can vary, but they always retain some characteristics from each parent. For example, a dog might inherit the curious, energetic nature from the poodle or be more stubborn and calm like the Bernedoodle parent. Smart, goofy and dedicated are just a few words that Bernedoodle owners regularly use to describe their beloved pets. Bernedoodle Designer Breed History Unlike many dogs on the designer breed registry, Bernedoodles have a well-known history. Originally developed by Bernedoodle breeder Sherry Rupke at SwissRidge Kennels, the first litter of two was born in .In addition to poodles and Bernese mountain parent dogs of various sizes, Rupke has added the Australian Labradoodle to her lines, resulting in the Australian Bernedoodle. These dogs have more consistent litters and tend to be somewhat hypoallergenic, even with straight or wavy coats. Where a dog like a golden retriever is bred to have a trusting, friendly temperament, Bernese dogs are reserved and suspicious of new people, making them slightly better guard dogs. Due to their history as herders and cart pullers, they might have a tendency to herd family members or other pets. Because of their intelligence, they require lots of stimulation and prefer to be with people rather than spending long periods of time alone. As working dogs, they were primarily duck hunters. They tend to favor one person and are very loyal and defensive of their owners. Poodles are one of the most popular choices for crossing purebred dogs because of their low- to no-shedding coat, which is more manageable than traditional dog fur. However, many pet owners prefer that their dog is less trusting and disinclined to approach unfamiliar people. Bernedoodles get very attached to their pet parents and require lots of attention and stimulation. A trip to the shops or an appointment should be fine, but no more than a few hours at a time or the dog may get anxious and fearful. Separation anxiety can result in unwanted behaviors such as accidents, barking, chewing and hyperactivity. Of course, this devotion is what makes them such wonderful companions for dog lovers. Second-generation F2 and multigenerational Bernedoodles might be smaller when a larger percentage of poodle is added into the mix. They usually measure between 12 and 17 inches and weigh between 10 and 24 pounds. Standard Bernedoodle Standard Bernedoodles take longer to mature than mini Bernedoodles and tiny Bernedoodles, which take 12 months each. On average, standard Bernedoodles weigh approximately 70 to 90 pounds. Appearance The Bernedoodle is a beautiful dog with a luscious coat and a teddy bear-like aesthetic. It has some adorable quirks when it comes to appearance. For instance, a Bernedoodle puppy often has a pink nose that turns black once the dog is fully matured. Straight Coat vs Wavy Coat vs Curly Coat In addition to different sizes of Bernedoodles, there are also different coat types: straight, wavy and curly. The latter is the most popular for many people, whether they have a family with mild allergies or simply want to minimize the amount of fur that makes its way onto their furniture. Doodles with curly fur shed less than their wavy or straight counterparts, but they have more stringent grooming needs. Straight coats are the easiest to manage grooming-wise but tend to shed more than wavy or curly coats. Because of their relatively normal shedding, this type of doodle is the least common. Wavy-coated Bernedoodles fall somewhere in the middle. Colors Bernedoodles coats can display in any combination of black, brown and white. All black is common, as is black and white or black and brown. In recent years, an even rarer gem has materialized: the merle Bernedoodle. These dogs have marbled grey coats with white and sometimes brown too. The Bernedoodle Breed and Family Life Bernedoodles are particularly well-suited to family life, even for first-time dog owners. They love being near people and are gentle and caring when it comes to small kids, but they also adore running around the backyard with older children and adults. Because they bond so closely with their loved ones, they make excellent companions and protectors. Training Your Bernadoodle Young Bernadoodles tend to inherit the stubbornness characteristic of both their poodle and Bernese mountain dog parents. Provided they have the right input, doodles are highly responsive to training because of their calm, eager-to-please and intelligent personality. You should still expect them to be mischievous, cheeky and headstrong, but just remember that patience, consistency and positive reinforcement will always deliver the best results. Bernedoodles are highly sensitive dogs, so losing patience or getting upset with them can be entirely counterproductive. Treats, playtime and effusive verbal praise when your dog gets it right will always be infinitely more effective than shouting at them or telling them off when they do something wrong. By doing this, you prevent them from getting anxious or overexcited when met with new experiences. Feed your pet the best-quality food you can afford and be diligent about sticking to a regular routine with feeding. There are four main types of food: wet, kibble, cooked and raw. A combination of dry and wet is often the most healthful and practical choice. When used alone, kibble can lead to dental issues and wet food can lead to digestive issues. Be sure to give a standard Bernedoodle food for larger dogs and miniature and toy Bernedoodles food for smaller dogs. Exercise While activity levels can vary depending on a variety of factors, Bernedoodles are generally considered to be moderately active. Miniature or toy doodles can be excellent apartment pets, but even these little guys will need at least one long walk per day and plenty of space to move around. Because of their intelligence, mental stimulation is just as important as physical stimulation. Grooming Requirements Take bathing cues from how your dog smells, but generally Bernedoodles need a bath every four to eight weeks. Clean its eyes and ears once per week, and give its nails a trim every time you bathe your dog. Brushing it two to three times a week staves off mats and tangles, and a trip to the groomer every three to five months helps your Bernedoodle look and feel its best. Dogs love getting pampered almost as much as we do! Doing it any earlier could result in its fur not growing properly for the rest of its life. Like many larger dog breeds, hip and elbow dysplasia are possible. With these conditions, the hips and elbows weaken and become arthritic. Some of the other potential health issues Bernedoodles potentially face include: Heart disease. The Bernese Mountain Dog is not nearly as common, and as a result, many people have not been able to interact with one personally, hence the frequent questions we receive about the Bernese Mountain Dog and the Bernedoodle. Bernedoodle Personalities and Temperaments? FUN So what is the Bernedoodle all about? The short answer is FUN! Read about which doodle breeds are the calmest here. The Bernese Mountain Dog takes its name from the canton of Bern in the central farmlands of Switzerland where he was bred to work on farms as a helper in various ways, from guarding livestock to pulling carts of farm supplies across the hilly Alpine terrain. As you can probably tell from his job description, the Bernese Mountain Dog is a large, strong dog who has the energy to do physical tasks. The Bernese Mountain Dog is known for having a sense of humor; running away with your socks or keys is one of his favorite pastimes. Although you may not find their jokes as terribly funny as they do if you do not enjoy slobbery socks or keys! Without his farm chores to do, the Bernese Mountain Dog must find other ways to use his powerful body and energy. This breed will happily snuggle with you on the sofa, but he must also be exercised daily, particularly when young. Bernedoodles Have Gentle and Caring Temperaments The Berner is known for being a gentle giant— patient with children, affectionate and devoted to his family. He is overall amiable and easygoing. However, this does not mean he is a pushover to train. Unlike the Golden retriever and Labrador, the Bernese Mountain Dog does not have a long history of therapy and service dog work. Despite being steady-tempered, he can be a bit stubborn when it comes to training and prefers to do things on his own timetable. One of the strongest qualities of the Berner is his affection. He may very well think his pound body can fit perfectly in your lap. He will want to accompany his owners as much as possible and his loyalty is simply unmatched. The other half of the Bernedoodle is of course the well-known Poodle. In fact, the sporting clip method of trimming the coat was originally used to facilitate swimming. So Standard Poodles are actually quite athletic, moderately active and extremely intelligent. Retrieving is a skill that requires dutiful obedience on the part of the dog, and the standard poodle is no exception. Poodles often excel in obedience competitions and agility exercises. They are also incredibly people-oriented and sensitive. This means they are often easy to train, but also that they require a lot of affection to be at their happiest and reach their full potential. In other words, Poodles are not the type of dog that will be content alone in the backyard all day! The Poodle lends its non-shedding coat and better health to the Bernese Mountain Dog to create a lower-shedding, longer-living, but just as loving of a companion as the purebred Berner. Still, the Bernedoodle may be more difficult to train than other types of doodles such as the goldendoodle. The Bernedoodle will need daily exercise to keep from turning his playful goofiness into a darker humor of chewing up your furniture or other bad habits. This is especially true if you are not at home for much of the day. As previously mentioned both the Bernese Mountain Dog and the Poodle are incredibly affectionate, devoted dogs. This is a huge positive to the breed as it makes the Bernedoodle one of the most loving and faithful companions in the dog world, but on the downside, they can become anxious and therefore destructive if they do not receive enough companionship. To summarize, we interviewed a few owners of Bernedoodles to get some firsthand descriptions of exactly what this breed is like.

The Cocker Spaniel may also experience hip and elbow dysplasia like the Golden Retriever. This breed has a life expectancy of 12 — 15 years. Keep in mind that the following information is based on its parent breeds. These are all predictions that vary from case to case depending on genetic makeup. In terms of physical appearance, the Cocker Spaniel comes in a variety of coat colors, so the forever puppy may not always be golden. It could be a mix of blue, black, brown, and white. The ideal attributes a Golden Cocker Retriever should have is a medium-length coat, floppy ears, and a smaller build than the Golden Retriever. We can predict the height of the Golden Retriever Cocker Spaniel mix will range from 20 to 24 inches 51 — 61 cm. As we mentioned above its weight will range from 30 to 45 pounds 13 — 20 kg. The health concerns of a Golden Cocker Retriever are also based on its parents. Both the Golden Retriever and Cocker Spaniel are capable of experiencing seizures associated with epilepsy and hip and elbow dysplasia. On the Cocker Spaniel side, however, you have more serious illnesses to worry about like glaucoma and cancerous tumors. On the bright side, both parent breeds have a good life expectancy, so your Golden Cocker Retriever will live a long and happy life of at least 10 years! Want to see how this mix grows up? For owners who really want a teacup-sized Golden Cocker Retriever, there are some toy ones on the market. And then you mix it once again with Cocker Spaniel to get an even smaller dog. A dog with dwarfism may look cute and small but it causes them a lot of pain throughout their entire lives. The height of a standard Goldendoodle reaches 20 inches 50 cm. The weight ranges from 50 — 90 pounds 22 — 40 kg. Additionally, the coat of a Goldendoodle will be much curlier than the Golden Cocker Retriever thanks to its Poodle parent breed. Both parent breeds have long-haired coats that invite moderate to heavy shedding throughout the year. Do I Need A Backyard? Yes, yes, yes, yes, YES. Purebred Golden Retrievers sometimes need two sessions. A fenced backyard or a playpen is also essential to keep your Golden Cocker Retriever from wandering off. Both parent breeds have a long history of being hunting dogs with a strong prey-drive. If your Golden Cocker Retriever sees or smells a small animal in the distance, it will run as quickly as it can to track it down. Dogs are just fine. For example, any sign of stubbornness or independence can lead to harder training. Start training as early as possible as puppies are easier to handle than adults. The temperament of a Golden Cocker Retriever should be: Happy. Although a playful pup sounds endearing, consider how many games of fetch or tag you want to play each day, and whether you have kids or other dogs who can stand in as playmates for the dog. They are not purebreds like their Golden Retriever or Cocker Spaniel parents. The mixed breed does shed, so aim to brush the coat daily if possible, being on the lookout for any potential mats. Golden Cocker Retrievers usually have no problems getting along with kids. This is a gentle and playful mixed breed that will happily become play buddies with your children This is not a dog who does well being left alone for long periods of the day. But digging into the background of their parent breeds can tell you a lot about where the dog comes from. Developed in Scotland, the Golden Retriever has always been renowned for their high intelligence and ability to take on agility and obedience-based tasks. When it comes to the Cocker Spaniel, this breed comes from Spain where they began as a hunting dog with a special expertise at tracking down and startling fowl. The Golden Cocker Retriever has become known as a designer dog breed, but many of them unfortunately end up in shelters. As is always the case with newer mixed dog breeds, exact size standards might vary. Most weigh in at 30 to 45 pounds and range in height from 20 to 24 inches. A total family dog, the mixed breed will quickly form loving bonds with the humans in their life—and will also very much want to be in on the act with any day-to-day tasks and activities. This is not a dog who does well being left alone for long periods of the day. Even better, at the end of a long day of healthy outdoor action, the dog will love to cuddle up together as you relax and recuperate on the couch. Golden Cocker Retrievers usually do great around children. Golden Cocker Retriever Health Golden Cocker Retrievers are generally considered to be healthy dogs; although, the breed can be predisposed to some of the same conditions that the Golden Retriever and Cocker Spaniel face. Your vet can help you develop a care routine that will keep your dog healthy. If you jog, bring the dog along! If you have access to a safe off-leash park, even better. If you have a safe fenced-in yard, add some interactive toys to the environment and let the breed explore and investigate. As with any dog who loves the outdoors, check that their nails are trimmed and in good shape, and examine the paw pads for any signs of damage. Doing this every two weeks should suffice. The coat is straight, medium in length, and usually described as being dense to the touch. The Golden Cocker Retriever does best in slightly warmer than usual weather. This is a gentle and playful mixed breed that will happily become play buddies with your children—just remember to make sure both parties are socialized correctly during the early days. In general, Golden Cocker Retrievers are fine around other household pets. But be sure the boundaries between the dog and existing household pets are laid down early. Cocker Spaniels first came to the US on the Mayflower in the 17th century. They were registered in and the popularity of the Cocker Spaniel grew significantly during the s and s. The American Cocker Spaniel has a smaller prey-drive than the English Cocker Spaniel, which makes them better family pets. The origin of the Golden Cocker Retriever was not widely documented and it is thought that this breed could be a designer breed that was created in the later s and the early s. Characteristics Of The Golden Cocker Retriever As we mentioned above, because the Golden Cocker Retriever is a crossbreed, it can be difficult to know exactly what your pup might look like and what their temperament might be. However, we can guess based on past litters. Both of the parents — either a Golden Retriever or a Cocker Spaniel — can be the sire or the dam in this cross breed. This contributes to the varying size and appearance of many Golden Cocker Retrievers. Regardless of some of the finer details, this breed is known for being an intelligent and friendly breed. The litter size for a Golden Retriever mix can be anywhere between 4 to 12 puppies. This means that they are said to maintain the look of a puppy, even as they grow up. It can be difficult to know exactly when they reach their adult life, but it is estimated anywhere between months. Mental maturity can take up to three years. A Golden Cocker Retriever is normally smaller than a Golden Retriever and usually weighs around pounds and measures between inches. They are a medium sized breed and are broader than a Cocker Spaniel with a long, smooth coat, floppy ears and a head which is slightly bigger than a Spaniels. Coat The Golden Cocker Retriever coat is normally medium in length and is smooth. It will have some featured fringes around the legs, ears and stomach which will need to be brushed daily to prevent any matting. Some puppies inherit more genes from the Golden and therefore have a double coat, meaning the fur may be denser and require more thorough grooming. We will go into more detail about grooming your Golden Cocker Retriever dog later on. If the Cocker Spaniel parent is brown, black, white or merle, then this can be passed to the pup. Temperament The Golden Cocker Retriever is a loyal and loving dog and is the perfect companion. They have a natural playful instinct that makes them fun to be around, and they love to chase and run around. Both parents have a sporting background which means your Retriever will love to be outside playing with you. Because they are so friendly they can make the perfect playmate for older children, but know to gentle around younger children too. They will want to be with you at all times, so they are not the right pet to have if you are going to be out for hours at a time. They will do best in a busier household where they have people around for most of the day. Luckily, these dogs are easy to train and, most of the time, undesirable behaviors can be trained out of them. This can include barking as well as behaviors brought on by anxiety if they are left alone for too long. Lifespan The typical life expectancy of a Golden Cocker Retriever is normally between 11 to 14 years. Some dogs show pain and lameness on one or both rear legs, but you may not notice any signs of discomfort in a dog with hip dysplasia. Cataracts — you might suspect your dog has cataracts if they are constantly bumping into furniture. Cataracts can be cured with surgery. Hypothyroidism — this can be caused by a deficiency of the thyroid hormone and may produce signs that include infertility, obesity, mental dullness and lack of energy. It can be treated with medication. Progressive Retinal Atrophy PRA — this is an eye disorder that eventually causes blindness from the loss of photoreceptors at the back of the eye. Regular vet checkups and keeping an eye on your dog will ensure you can catch any of these issues before they become untreatable. Daily Life We have covered what the temperament and the characteristics of the Golden Cocker Retriever are and how many of their traits depend on what they inherit from their parents. Now, we can take a look at what living with this dog is like. Luckily, no matter what features your Golden Retriever Cocker Spaniel hybrid inherits from their parents, daily life with them is pretty much the same. Of course, you should always check the back of the dog food packet to confirm how much you should be feeding them based on their exact weight. Try to feed your Golden Cocker Retriever high-quality dog food two times a day. If possible, you should try to put them on food that is formulated for medium to large dog breeds, again based on their weight. It is a cross between the Golden Retriever and the Cocker Spaniel. The best way to determine the temperament of a mixed breed is to look up all breeds in the cross and know you can get any combination of any of the characteristics found in either breed. It is very common for breeders to breed multi-generation crosses. We got him from some people who didn't take very good care of him. This dog is an amazing athlete and can run non stop for a long time and has powerful hind legs for jumping. He does not have the swimming ability like our 8 year old Golden Retriever, Rosie. He is the nicest dog you can ask for, he's always up to play , never bites , loves playing with other dogs , and always wants to get outside the house. Great family dog! She loves to go fishing and swimming. When I put her out in her run to play she will call me when she's ready to come in by saying 'mama. She does have some English Cocker Spaniel in her too. She is a very sweet, smart, playful puppy. She loves to carry around sticks when she is playing outside and enjoys going on a walk. She is content to sleep in her indoor doggy kennel-bed at night. I couldn't imagine a better family pet! Bred by Dakota Winds Ranch. However, they may have as much as .He's got the gentle disposition of his Golden Retriever friend and the up-beatness of a Cocker Spaniel. Her favorite food is bar-b-q and will jump off the walls until midnight! I got Tucker from a breeder. He was the only shorthaired puppy in the litter. The breeder did not know why he came out shorthaired, so a DNA test was done. His sire was, in fact, his sire. There is no reasonable explanation why he has short hair, other than he just does! He is a great little dog and a very sweet puppy. He is very gentle, loving and sweet.

He chooses to play with a different dog above a ball or stick anytime. The two of these dogs are extremely substantial electricity and aim to please. Dogs with floppy ears are somewhat more prone to ear infections only because they are more inclined to trap moisture, soil, and debris. You might want to ask the breeder regarding the other dog breed in the mix to find a clearer idea of what coat types you could count on. Alas, many large breeds like the German Shepherd Husky become hard to handle as soon as they reach adulthood. These dogs look a lot like the standard German Shepherd and have had some grooming done, but they are mixed. A cross between a Poodle and a Doberman is one of these dogs. The owner put their dog on the craigslist ad because they realized they needed a larger dog. Most people with large dogs know that they need special care and nutrition to stay healthy. This crossbreed does get along quite well with children and other pets. They have a loving, protective nature and are great companions. However, this is not a dog to be brought into a family or adopted from a shelter. German Shepherd mixes are not wanted in the traditional sense. First of all, you should know that the breeding of Huskies requires a very particular diet. They should not be fed any commercially prepared food products. Instead, a good, balanced diet consisting of dry kibble, canned food, and raw meat is ideal. The best diet is a raw meaty diet. You should be able to find commercial dog foods at your local pet store, but most breeders insist that their breeding dogs get only raw food. Before you bring your new dog home, you should get an ear cleaning done by a veterinarian. An animal scan will help you know if there are any problems with your pet before you get it home. German Shepherds are prone to ear infections, which can sometimes be prevented by early treatment. Ask your breeder or the vet what early signs to look out for. German Shepherds mix very well with other dogs, so it is important to socialize them before you get them. Visit a local dog park and spend time with other dogs. Make sure you interact properly with all the dogs. Be polite in speech and manner, but firm in your training. German Shepherd dogs need to be trained so that they know how much of a dog they have, and not just what breed they are. A good training program will show your Husky that all dogs are equal and should treat each other with respect. Praise and reward them for good behavior. They have to learn that you are their owner first. Some dogs mix have a difficult time fitting into their new surroundings, and you should do your best to help them adjust. This should take time and patience. When looking at German Shepherd mixes for sale online, make sure that you do your homework. Get your new friend from a reputable breeder, not someone who is selling puppies. Ask for references and check them out. Share this:.

She doesn't shed at all and has an extremely nice, soft coat. Her temperament is outstanding and she gets along great with our old lab and loves kids - she was truly a great pick and we couldn't be happier with her. We're thinking she'll probably end up around 60 because she just weighed in at 52 at her last vet visit and she still has a lot of filling out to do. Paul Michigan Hi Karri- just a little update on Jet. Since picking him up on Thursday, he has been the perfect puppy. He has only had one accident in the house, sleeps through the night, only waking once to go outside, he is crate training quickly, and has been on road trips to Spring Lake and as far as Up North Cadillac. He is a little cuddle bug and is beginning to play a lot and becoming more independent. I absolutely love this little guy. Thanks for breeding such great pups! She really helped make the transition of my new puppy to my home a breeze. I was able to meet and visit with my puppy for the first time at 4 weeks old and it was love at first site. What a beautiful boy, with a brown curly coat that feels like silk. We were already bonding at this visit and it was pure bliss. I anxiously waited while he grew old enough to bring him home, all the while in contact with Karri as she answered any questions I may have had and also gave me updates. The day finally came where I was to bring him home, Lance was now 9 weeks old and when we reunited he was so excited as if he recognized me and this just melted my heart. What a pure joy he is. Lance also loves to snuggle which is my favorite. He met and visited with my children, grandchildren and their dogs and cat on several occasions, who all love him to pieces. He plays nice with them all. He is a big part of our family now and is adjusting so nicely. Sir Lancelot is the best gift I have ever given myself! I look forward to our future together. Although Affenpugs are generally spunky dogs, they can be calm in the home. This mix is exceptionally delightful, thanks to the Pug side. However, the Affenpinscher brings out the alertness that makes them decent watchdogs. Naturally, these playful dogs will be inquisitive. They love to explore and enjoy spending most of their time with their owners. And depending on the parent, these Pug mixes can inherit either a rough or wiry coat we love the wiry coats! But because of their petite size, they may not do too well with smaller children. When they go into defense mode, they may snap back at rough play. On the down side, they may be stubborn, though training can fix that. Both parent breeds are fantastic companions that are highly adaptable, so the mix is likely the same. While both parents bring a playful side, the greyhound parent adds an boost of excitement and energy into this Pug mix. On the bright side, they would not mind spending plenty of time indoors with their owners. Again, these small dogs do better with older kids. Although Puglands enjoy the company of children, they may easily snap back at rough teasing. Socialization is important, though, teaching young kids to respect them is even more. After all, Pugs are lovers not fighters. And depending on the parentage, they may either be small or medium-sized dogs that vary between 15 to 30 pounds. And while both parents have relatively short snouts, the Box-A-Pug will have a snout that is somewhere in between. The Boxer brings the athleticism and energy, while the Pug brings the playfulness. As long as they are well-socialized, they also tend to be open and friendly with strangers. They can be prone to barking and it can become a nuisance behavior if you do not train your dog to stop barking early on. If the other parent breed has a similar temperament, then you can expect the same from a Pug Mix. You still want to ask the breeder about the other parent breed as they will likely introduce their own potential quirks. You can also meet the mother in person to get a sense of her temperament and see the behavior she is modeling for her puppies. Although the breeder should have started socialization and training, it is up to you to continue to train and socialize a puppy once you get them home. Pugs are moderately adaptable dogs. Although they do well in apartments as well as larger homes, they are particularly sensitive to heat and cold as a snub-nosed dog breed. The other parent breed could still introduce some traits that affect adaptability, so you do want to ask the breeder about them. Mixed-breed dogs can sometimes be healthier than purebred dogs, but it is not a guarantee. They can inherit none, some, or all of the conditions common to their parent breeds. From the Pug side, potential health conditions to be aware of include eye problems, luxating patella , encephalitis, and hip dysplasia. As a brachycephalic, or snub-nosed, dog, they are prone to allergies and respiratory issues. Reputable breeders will screen their dogs to avoid passing preventable issues on to puppies. So, make sure you ask about the health and genetic history of both of the parents. You can also ask about any health tests or clearances that have been done. A Pug is eager to please and tends to pick up on things quickly. They tend to be a good fit for owners of all experience levels. The other parent breed could make a Pug Mix easy to train or more difficult, so you want to make sure you ask the breeder about them. A Pug Mix can inherit a coat similar to one of their parents or a coat that is truly a mix of both. Should they inherit the Pug coat, it will shed a bit year-round, require weekly brushing, and the occasional bath. Cutting nails once or twice monthly keeps them from growing too long. Ear checks on a weekly basis with careful cleanings as needed can help prevent ear infections. Brushing teeth or using an enzyme toothpaste every day in addition to cleanings at the vet as needed are ideal dental care for dogs. Pugs tend to sit in a low to moderate energy range. Usually, daily walks and some playtime are enough to keep them happy and healthy. They may be up for more activity, but can also get easily overheated. There are safe ways to exercise flat-faced dogs to help make sure they get enough activity. If the other parent breed also has a low to moderate activity level, then you can expect something similar from a Pug Mix. However, if the other parent breed is a higher energy dog, then you will want to make sure you are prepared for the potential of a high-energy dog. Fully-grown Pugs are usually inches tall and weigh pounds. The other parent breed can have a big effect on this, especially if they are the mother. Although it is not a guarantee, you can meet the mother in person to get an idea of what to expect in a fully-grown Pug Mix. A Pug generally lives for years. These are designer breeds that are bred for a specific purpose. We produce an incredible bernedoodle that displays the qualities of both our champion line Standard Poodles and the Bernese Mountain Dog pedigrees. The advantage of a carefully planned mixed breed is that you get the added advantage of a phenomenon called "hybrid vigor". This process shuffles new combinations of genes that helps to increase longevity and decrease the usual ailments that impact many purebred dogs such as various forms of inherited types of cancer not all cancers have a genetic basis such as small and large cell lymphoma which is usually a result from environmental exposure. The bernedoodles are super healthy and are not as prone to the same issues that Bernese mountain dogs and standard poodles are. As a result, you have a family member for a lot longer and that will live a vibrant and healthy life if properly cared for diet, exercise, and family integration are all important components toward helping the dog to live a long happy life with you.You can see the links above about the qualities of Standard Poodles and Bernese Mountain Dogs as both are extraordinary breeds in their own right and for many, purebreds of these may be a great option as well. We prefer the Bernedoodle as they get the best of both breeds, incredibly loyal, goofy, smart, playful, intelligent, and has one of the best dog personalities we have seen in a family dog. The Premier F1 Standard Bernedoodle is a low- to mostly nonshedding we use standard poodles that do not carry the improper coat alleles and Bernese mountain dogs that have thick wavy curly coats. If you want a guarantee on non shedding, then you should try to select an F1b or F1bb bernedoodle. Both look amazingly similar to the F1 standard bernedoodles but maybe a little smaller. We will produce about 2 F1b and F1bb standard bernedoodle litters per year for those wanting a more curly coat in their bernedoodles. Premier Bernedoodles love to be with the family and do not do well in enviroments of isolation. Wherever the family is, that's right where they want to be. They are stunning dogs, and you'll likely get alot of attention and people asking you what kind of dog you have. They are beautiful and along with their incredibly gentle personalities, you will have an absolutely stunning dog. They are a perfect companion dog that love to go on walks through the city or hikes in the woods or mountains or a swim at the beach. They love it all and will be at your side the entire time. They don't tend to wander away as they prefer to be with you. They equally love just hanging out with you on the couch watching your favorite movie or watching you reading a book. They really love it all as long as you're a part of it. They are so loyal to the family. Bernedoodle puppies do have energy like most puppies, and this will continue thru about years of age at which time they really mellow out. They are not nervous nor hyper but will need some off leash time where they can really stretch their legs and run. The old motto "a tired puppy is a good puppy" always prevails! Just make sure they have a lot of fresh water and a cool spot to cool off afterward. Due to the the recombination and shuffling of new genetic variations, they do show some variation in their coloration however they also all have a common morphology that tells you it's a bernedoodle. Although we do take deposits on a first come, first pick basis, we will know the puppies well, their personalities, and can help select a puppy that best fits your lifestyle and what you are looking for. We only use Standard Poodles and Bernese Mountain Dogs to produce our Premier Bernedoodles so that any dog we accept into our Premier Bernedoodle program have passed stringent health tests, display family oriented personalities, and exhibit the best of conformation so that our bernedoodles are absolutely beautiful. Be very cautious when purchasing a purebred or bernedoodle without doing your due diligence as the puppies will always be cute, but will exhibit the personalities of the bloodline used later in life. Therefore, use a reptutable breeder that has invested in the dogs they use for their breeding programs and that raise them as their own family members. They should be able to produce their pedigrees as well, and should have both parents on site so you can see how they react to you. We are very Type A when it comes to the quality of dogs which makes it more difficult to give referrals. We are always going to be biased and believe that the wait for a Premier Bernedoodle is worth it and you'll be very happy you did! Also you can visit your local humane society and help rescue a dog at the shelter. If you have young kids be sure to get a younger dog from the shelter that can adapt to your family. But if you're looking for a unique new family member, a Premier Bernedoodle will be a true delight. Colors and Fur Our Premier Bernedoodles will be traditional tri-color much like a Bernese Mountain Dog , abstract tricolor similar to a traditional tricolor with less white in the face , sable similar to a traditional tri-color but has more reddish-browns due to the poodle genetics we use , phantom, merle, merle tricolor, or bi-colored brown and white, black and white, or shades thereof. Our F1b's will consist of black and whites, traditional tricolors, abstract tricolors, and lots of variable brown and reddish brown and whites. Color never reflects temperament and personality so usually most people don't really care too much what color they are. They are all really beautiful. Although there's variation due to the hybrid vigor present as a result of the recombination of genes in many arrays, there is definitely a bernedoodle appearance that is fairly consistent. If you let the hair grow, they will look like big shaggy dogs that you can't help but to give a big hug to. And they enjoy every minute of it! Our Premier Bernedoodles will tend to have wavy curly coats due to the coat types we require in our bernese mountain dogs which helps to minimize or eliminate shedding. We do make sure that our standard poodles do not carry the genetic marker known as the "Improper Coat" allele or IC for short. Wavy curly coats do require a little more grooming as compared to straight, but many, straight coats shed more.Although they are considered to be large, they don't act like a large dog in the house. They are generally very careful and calm natured as adults however they do have some puppy-fun energy thru the puppyhood stages and thru 3 years of age. They love people and other pets! We do thorough genetic testing of our adults that we use in our breeding program to assure that you are purchasing the healthiest of bernedoodle puppies. Our Bernese mountain dogs come from very long-lived blood lines in Western Europe and these longer lifespans is one of the many reasons we obtain our Berners from several specific populations known for their longevity. Obviously we can't guarantee lifespan as there are many variables outside of our control not to mention, environment, stress, climate, food, etc. But track record seems to show a longer lifespan. What's the Difference? An F1b is an F1 standard Bernedoodle backcrossed to a standard poodle or could be a backcross to a Bernese mountain dog but we generally use the poodle as the backcross. An F1bb is an F1b standard Bernedoodle backcrossed to a standard poodle. Behaviorally they are all very similar with the F1b and F1bb's being slightly smaller than our F1 standards and tend to have slightly curlier coats to a tight wave. If you're looking for a smaller standard Bernedoodle these would be a great option. Pictures are posted below with the other pictures. We continue to get lots of praise from those that have purchased our F1b and F1bb standard bernedoodles. Is the Bernedoodle for Everybody? I would like to think so, but if you do not plan on being with your bernedoodle and keeping it with you, in your home, as part of your home, this is definitely not the dog for you. They thrive on being with the family and not isolated we believe this is the case for all dogs, and especially bernedoodles. Any of our puppies kept in a permanent kennel situation, on a tether, or the like, will violate the terms and conditions of our puppy contract and will have to render the puppy or dog back to Premier Doodles see puppy contract in link above. We definitely support crate training, but these dogs are not meant to live their life in a crate nor kennel! If you want a pet that prefers to be in isolation, you may want to consider a nonsocial pet perhaps a Betta fish! Yes we have done a lot of the hard work the first 8 weeks as we do extensive early neurological stimulation bio-sensor and Puppy Culture program, along with starting crate training and housebreaking, BUT, they are puppies and will need your undivided attention for the next weeks as they work towards being completely housebroken and earning more privileges. They have been communicating with their siblings for the past 8 weeks using their mouth. During their normal daily interactions, you will occasionally hear a loud "yelp" in response to one biting another too hard. This yelp usually ends the mouthing behavior. Now puppies have fur and people generally do not. When you bring your bernedoodle home, they will likely display some degree of mouthing behavior toward their human family. This will usually stop this behavior. We then redirect their desire to mouth to something more appropriate like a chew toy and after a few seconds of cooperating we praise them. The good news.We have a Puppy Guide under our tab "Puppy Central" on how to unpack this process so that you can have success. If you put them time in early, they will have this knocked out in a few days. The rule of thumb is to get them outside ALOT.Be sure to purchase two Midwest XL crates can get from our Puppy Store , one for the back door and one next to your bed. The power of meiosis specialized cell division event that occurs in the reproductive organs, ovaries for females and testes for males and crossing over assures that each offspring will be diverse and different and this difference will be noticeable in color and a little bit in behavior. All will be superior, but some will be more playful and others less so, some will mouth more than others, etc. Available Puppies.Check out our "Available Puppies" tab at the top to find out how to get onto our Master List for a future puppy! Sherry Rupke is widely credited for breeding the first Mini Bernedoodles in when the Ontario-based Swissridge Kennel breeder intentionally bred two of her Bernedoodles. Mini Bernedoodle Appearance Mini Bernedoodles can come in a wide variety of different colors. Their appearance mirrors that of their Bernese Mountain Dog and Poodle parents. They resemble a cuddly, hair small bear cub. These shaggy dogs can have the broad build of the Bernese Mountain Dog or the slender build of the Poodle. Every Mini Bernedoodle has a different coat but there does tend to be some common themes. In terms of size, Mini Bernedoodles can range from 18 to 22 inches tall and weigh between 25 and 45 pounds. However, you can get some members of the cross breed who are a little taller, smaller, heavier or lighter than these ranges. After all, they tend to be happy, goofy, loving and loyal dogs who relish the chance to interact with their fellow family members. Their energy levels can vary depending on whether they take after their Poodle parent or Bernese Mountain Dog parent. This is both a blessing and a curse, but does require persistence when training them because they can regress in training quickly if you do not maintain consistency. Rasa highlighted that every Mini Bernedoodle is going to differ slightly, but they usually have some traits in common. Every [Mini] Bernedoodle is a little bit different. In my experience, though, [Mini] Bernedoodles are total velcro dogs and often a product of their environment — so whatever training you do and routines you establish will help your [Mini] Bernedoodle in developing their personality. For instance, a Mini Bernedoodle who is more alike the Miniature Poodle will have quite high energy levels but a Mini Bernedoodle who is more akin to a Bernese Mountain Dog could be more relaxed. She plays with neighbors dog about 30min every day. High energy. Rasa highlighted the importance of mental stimulation when taking care of a Mini Bernedoodle. Treat puzzles and snuffle mats are truly life changing and will often exhaust your puppy more than any physical exercise you can give, but [Mini] Bernedoodles love being social and active so you should definitely incorporate both. Booker gets at least two walks a day as well as some playtime with other dogs. His favorite form of exercise is play time with other dogs so we try to set up play dates once a week with other dogs in our neighborhood — either by going to our local dog park or playing in the backyard. Poodles are the second smartest dogs in the world behind the Border Collie. Rasa found training Bernie a breeze seeing as her Mini Bernedoodle was highly food motivated. Be warned, however, that sometimes bernedoodles will try to outsmart you to get treats without a task! Mehnoosh believes Mini Bernedoodles do benefit from consistent and regular training. Having said that, each member of the cross breed could shed to varying degrees, from virtually no shedding to moderate shedding. Mehnoosh provided a brilliant explanation of why Mini Bernedoodles tend to be low shedders. However, the shedding is minimal and is reduced when you breed Bernedoodles with other Bernedoodles. In my experience, not at all but you do have to keep up with grooming religiously. While most [Mini] Bernedoodles have the non-shedding Poodle coat, without daily brushing and regular professional grooming it can get quite matted. SwissRidge Bernedoodles founder Rupke wrote on her website that Bernedoodles and Mini Bernedoodles are completely dedicated to their families with a special fondness for children. In general, [Mini] Bernedoodles love being part of a family unit, inclusive of humans, dogs, cats, whatever! Mehnoosh recommended early socialisation for Mini Bernedoodles to help develop their social skills. Mini Bernedoodles are very affectionate and friendly dogs, particularly to other pets within the household! Separation anxiety is a chronic canine condition that occurs when dog owners are about to leave the home or have left the home. The symptoms include barking, howling, whining, chewing, digging, urinating and defecating. But yes they want to be with you alllllll the time. Mini Bernedoodles are absolutely velcro dogs and would rather be with their people than without, so to an extent, yes. However, if you do your best to make sure they are well exercised physically and mentally, this should not be a problem. If you leave them comfortable, they should be able to stay comfortable! However, Mehnoosh revealed that Booker does suffer with separation anxiety. This is a tough question, as i can only speak to my experience with Mini Bernedoodles. But i know that to be true with many different breeds that were also adopted or purchased during the pandemic. Are Mini Bernedoodle Fussy Eaters? However, the Bernese Mountain Dog is a breed that can have sensitive to certain types of food. Mehnoosh admitted that Booker is a voracious eater. Absolutely not — Mini Bernedoodles are hungry all the time and will eat just about anything if you were to allow them! Booker eats a diet that is inclusive of kibble and freeze fried food. One thing to be mindful of though is that poodle breeds often have allergies with chicken so we like to avoid including any chicken within his diet. However, as a relatively new hybrid dog, your best bet may be a breeder. You should be prepared to answer questions about your lifestyle and home as well as ask the breeder lots of questions. You should ask to see your potential pup with their mother as well as ask the breeder for proof of health screening and veterinarian checks. Breeds The link has been copied! The Bernedoodle is a hybrid dog that combines the intelligence and of the Poodle with the robust and loyal personality of the Bernese Mountain Dog. If you are curious about the size of a full grown Bernedoodle, read on as we break them all down. Size Categories of a Full Grown Bernedoodles 1. Standard Bernedoodle Size Standard Bernedoodles vary in size, with some being larger or smaller than others. However, on average, a full-grown standard Bernedoodle weighs between 50 and 90 pounds and stands 22 to 29 inches. This size range is considered to be a standard or medium Bernedoodle. It's crucial to note that the size of a standard Bernedoodle can vary depending on the size of the Poodle and Bernese Mountain Dog parents used in the crossbreeding process. For example, suppose a toy poodle is used as one of the parents. In that case, the resulting Bernedoodle puppies may be smaller than a standard Poodle. Similarly, suppose a standard Bernese Mountain Dog is used as one of the parents. In that case, the resulting Bernedoodle puppies may be larger than if a smaller Poodle was used. Features of a Full Grown Standard Bernedoodle These are energetic and active dogs that need frequent training and psychological stimulation. This dog is highly intelligent and can be coached to execute several tasks, such as discipline and swiftness courses. A standard full grown Bernedoodle can live a long time with its owner with appropriate monitoring and training. Mini Bernedoodle Size The mini Bernedoodle size is a smaller version of the standard Bernedoodle breed. Similar to standard Bernedoodles, mini Bernedoodles are hybrid dogs that carry the characteristics of the Poodle and the Bernese Mountain Dog. However, a full grown mini Bernedoodle size is smaller than their bigger sized kinds. On average, the mini Bernedoodle size will often be between 20 and 50 pounds and stand 14 to 22 inches high. This can be considered a medium sized dog. Additionally, the full size mini Bernedoodle size depends on the parents involved in the breeding process. Mini Bernedoodles are routinely created by breeding a moyan poodle or a mini poodle with a Bernese Mountain Dog. This crossbreeding procedure results in smaller Bernedoodle puppies that are more active and easily managed in tinier living spaces or for owners with less time for exercise. Features of a mini Bernedoodle Despite their relatively smaller size, mini Bernedoodles are still energetic and active dogs that require frequent training and mental stimulation. Mini Bernedoodles are intelligent dogs and can be coached to perform various duties, such as obedience training and agility courses. Similar to their full-grown kinds, mini Bernedoodles can make good therapy dogs and provide great companions for families with children. With proper care and training, mini Bernedoodles can live long, healthy lives with their owners. Similar to full-grown and mini Bernedoodles, toy Bernedoodles are crossbred dogs that combine the traits of the Poodle and the Bernese Mountain Dog. However, toy Bernedoodles are smaller than their full-grown and mini counterparts. On average, a toy Bernedoodle weighs between 10 and 20 pounds and stands 10 to 14 inches tall. Additionally, the toy Bernedoodle size will depend on the size of the parents used in the breeding process. Toy Bernedoodles are often created by crossbreeding a tiny or toy Poodle with a small Bernese Mountain Dog. This process results in even smaller Bernedoodle puppies that are more compact and easier to manage by busy masters living in smaller spaces. Characteristics of Toy Bernedoodles Toy Bernedoodles appear to be the smallest of their kind but are still strong dogs and require steady coaching and psychological stimulation. Comparing them to their other kinds, these dogs are sharp intellectually. They can be instructed to carry out several duties, such as obedience monitoring and agility teachings. Toy Bernedoodles are also regarded to be exemplary therapy dogs and can live longer under good care and training. Limitations of Toy Bernedoodles It is important to remember that toy Bernedoodles are more prone to particular health issues due to their small size. These issues may include dental problems, respiratory issues, and joint problems. Toy Bernedoodle owners should note these potential health issues and work closely with their veterinarian to ensure that their dog receives appropriate care and medical attention. However, these dogs need regular grooming to maintain their healthy coat. This routine may include frequent brushing, baths, nail trimmings, and ear cleanings. Additionally, the Bernedoodles breed is often used as service and therapy dogs due to their calm and gentle nature. The Bernadoodle dog breed is among the most juvenile, dating back to the early s. This calm and easy-going dog goes by other names, such as Bernesedoodle, Bernese Mountain Dog, or the Bernepoo mix. This breed of dog comes in various sizes, including standard Bernedoodles, mini Bernedoodles, and toy Bernedoodles, and can have a wide range of colors in their coat. They were originally used as farm dogs, where they performed tasks such as pulling carts and guarding livestock. The breed gets its name from the canton of Bern, where they were originally developed. It was recognized as a breed by the Swiss Kennel Club in , and the breed was first imported to the United States in .Today, they are still used for work on farms in some parts of the world, but they are also popular as family pets. They are known for their intelligence, strength, and versatility, and they are often used in search and rescue, therapy, and as guide dogs. They are also shown in conformation shows and participate in other canine sports such as obedience and agility. The Poodle The Purebred Poodle is a breed of dog that is believed to have originated in Germany, although the exact origins of the breed are unclear. The breed was originally developed as a water retriever, and the name "Poodle" is thought to be derived from the German word "pudel," which means "to splash in the water. The Standard Poodle is the largest of the three sizes and was originally used as a working dog, while the Miniature Poodle and Toy Poodle were bred to be companion dogs. Poodles became popular in France in the 18th century, and they were often kept by aristocrats as lapdogs. The breed became popular in the United States in the 19th century, and the American Kennel Club recognized the Poodle as a breed in .Today, Poodles are known for their intelligence, trainability, and versatility, and they are often used in canine sports such as obedience, agility, and tracking. They are also popular as family pets and are often shown in conformation shows. Understanding What "Designer Breeds" Means A designer breed is a type of dog that is created by intentionally breeding two purebred dogs of different breeds. The intention is to create a new breed that combines the characteristics of both parent breeds. Designer breeds are also sometimes called "hybrid" or "crossbred" dogs. This is exactly what a Bernedoodle is, regardless of the size you are interested in. Designer breeds are created for a variety of reasons. Some people breed designer dogs in an effort to create a breed that has the desirable qualities of both parent breeds, such as the intelligence and trainability of a Poodle with the low-shedding coat of a Bichon Frise. Others breed designer dogs simply because they find the combination of two specific breeds to be aesthetically pleasing. It's important to keep in mind that designer breeds are not recognized as official breeds by major kennel clubs, such as the American Kennel Club AKC. This means that they are not eligible to participate in AKC-sanctioned conformation shows or other events. Coat Colors for Bernedoodles Bernedoodles come in several coat colors: white, black, cream, and brown. These colors can appear in solid form or mixed with others. For example, a Bernedoodle may have a black and white coat, a cream and brown coat, or any other combination of these colors. However, it is important to know that the coat color of a Bernedoodle depends on the coat colors of the Poodle and Bernese Mountain Dog parents involved in the breeding process. For example, suppose a Bernese Mountain Dog with a black and white coat is bred with a Poodle with a cream and brown coat. In that case, the resulting Bernedoodle puppies may have a variety of coat colors, including black, white, cream, and brown. The coat colors of a Bernedoodle are primarily soft and fluffy, with a wavy or curly texture. Bernedoodle Temperament The Bernedoodle combines the intelligence of a poodle with the loyalty and easygoing temperament of a Bernese mountain dog, resulting in a cross that has all the best qualities of the two breeds. One of the most important characteristics to consider is Bernedoodle size, which varies based on whether the parent dogs are small, medium or large. Bernese Mountain Dog Size According to the American Kennel Club, a female Bernese mountain dog usually stands 23 to 26 inches high and weighs an average of 70 to 95 pounds , while a male Bernese mountain dog averages 25 to .The standard poodle is typically over 15 inches tall and weighs between 40 and 50 pounds for a female or 60 to 70 pounds for a male. Toy poodles are much smaller, with a standard height of no more than 10 inches and an average weight of 4 to 6 pounds. Bernedoodle Size Options Bernedoodle dogs come in four different sizes: micro, mini, medium and standard. The size of a Bernedoodle puppy depends on the size of its parents. Micro Bernedoodle Size The micro bernedoodle is a cross between a mini bernedoodle and a mini poodle. Also referred to as a toy bernedoodle, the micro version of this breed tends to be more excitable than larger bernedoodles due to the heavy influence of the toy poodle in its breeding line. Full-grown micro bernedoodles typically weigh 10 to 30 pounds. Mini Bernedoodle Size Mini bernedoodles are the result of breeding between Bernese mountain dogs and mini or toy poodles. Average mini bernedoodle size ranges from 25 to 55 pounds. Medium Bernedoodle Size The next largest bernedoodle size is the medium bernedoodle, which results from a cross between two smaller standard bernedoodle dogs or a smaller standard poodle with a smaller Bernese mountain dog. Average medium bernedoodle size ranges from 45 to 70 pounds. These dogs typically have a shoulder height of 20 to 26 inches. Standard Bernedoodle Size A standard-size bernedoodle is the largest of the bernedoodle size options, usually weighing 70 pounds or more and measuring 23 to 29 inches high at the shoulder. There are two ways to produce a bernedoodle puppy: cross two standard bernedoodles or breed one poodle with one Bernese mountain dog. Allowing a poodle to mate with a Bernese mountain dog usually produces a healthier bernedoodle puppy because it pulls from a larger gene pool, reducing the risk that undesirable characteristics will be passed from the parents to the puppy. No matter what size it is, a Bernedoodle puppy has a wonderful temperament. The influence of the poodle makes bernedoodles intelligent and easy to train, while the influence of the Bernese mountain dog makes a Bernedoodle puppy loyal and a bit goofy. Trained properly, a Bernedoodle makes a wonderful companion for children and adults alike. Size is an important consideration, however, as it affects how well a Bernedoodle fits into your home. You may also want to consider a micro or mini bernedoodle if you have arthritis or another medical condition that would make it challenging to control a large dog on a leash. Micro and mini bernedoodles also make excellent companions for young children. Larger bernedoodles are an option if you have a larger home with plenty of room for exercise. Bernedoodle Size and Temperament Remember that the size of a Bernedoodle also affects its temperament. Smaller versions have more poodle characteristics, meaning they may have more energy than medium or standard bernedoodles. Micro and mini bernedoodles also tend to bark more than their larger counterparts. If you live in an apartment building or condominium, you may want to get a medium or standard bernedoodle to keep your neighbors happy. All four Bernedoodle sizes have positive qualities, but be sure to consider your living situation and personal needs when determining which one is right for you. Thinking carefully before you choose your Bernedoodle puppy can help you avoid some of the most common challenges of dog ownership. Because they are mixes of two different breeds, every Schipper-Poo is unique, and some dogs may take more after one parent breed or the other. Dogs that are harder to train will require a bit more patience and practice. Proper exercise, nutrition, and hygiene also play an important role in the lifespan of your pet. More social dogs have a tendency to run up to strangers for pets and scratches, while less social dogs shy away and are more cautious, even potentially aggressive. Schipper-Poo Puppies A post shared by Masja Pit masjairientje Schipper-Poos are less common than other designer dogs, so finding a Schipper-Poo usually requires some work. There are no rescue organizations dedicated to Schipper-Poos, but Schipper-Poo puppies might be available through breeders. Because they are a newer and rarer mix, prices vary and there is no standard price point. When you do find a Schipper-Poo breeder, ensure that your breeder is properly caring for their dogs before buying. Ethical breeders will properly feed, exercise, and care for their adult dogs and puppies, including proper vet care. Their high energy levels and friendly personalities can make them a great fit for an active family. Well socialized Schipper-Poos will often get on well with kids and make great playmates from morning till night. If a Schipper-Poo is on the larger end, some supervision and additional training might be required to keep children safe. Because Schipper-Poos love attention and get bored easily, it can be harder for single people or older individuals to care for them. Schipper-Poos often do best if they can come along with their owners wherever they go and spend some time playing and exercising every day. Schipper-Poos are a social breed that often loves the company of other dogs. They love furry playmates, and a second dog might serve as a source of entertainment and companionship. Schipper-Poos also can get along with cats and other mid-sized pets with proper training and socialization. Some Schipper-Poos tend to chase cats when not properly trained. Many Schipper-Poos have inherited a strong prey drive that leads them to chase after smaller animals. Because of this, Schipper-Poos might not do well in households with small pets like ferrets, hamsters, or small birds. If you do have small animals, be prepared to watch your Schipper-Poo closely and keep your pets separated. Most Schipper-Poos do best with two or three meals a day. Schipper-Poos are at risk of obesity, so food should be monitored and regulated. Schipper-Poos will be happiest and healthiest when fed high-quality food in the proper quantities. Although the amount of exercise needed varies from dog to dog, most Schipper-Poos enjoy a daily walk and other forms of exercise. They enjoy playing with their owners and exploring the world around them. Because Schipper-Poos tend to be curious, they often enjoy going to new places with their family, provided they are kept on a leash. However, Schipperkes are known for their stubbornness and many Schipper-Poos have inherited this trait. Many owners find that training requires patience and persistence to overcome this stubbornness, but it eventually will pay off. Some may have soft, curly fur, while others may have straighter hair or something in between. Other Schipper-Poos will have moderate shedding coats. A shedding coat will require daily brushing to maintain. Schipper-Poos only require bathing when they are dirty or smelly, and too frequent bathing may cause skin dryness. Schipper-Poos might also require occasional cleaning around the eyes and ears. If a Schipper-Poo gets tear marks below their eyes, regular wiping might be required. Like other dogs, regular tooth brushing will help Schipper-Poos stay healthy. As a designer dog, the Schipper-Poo tends to be healthier than most purebreds. Regular vet care will help you find and treat health problems early. This includes regular physical exams, as well as hip and thyroid tests to watch out for specific health concerns. Schipper-Poos may have the same health conditions that are common in Poodles and Schipperkes. Here are some conditions to watch out for: Minor Conditions. If a mix takes after their Schipperke parent, they will be a small and affectionate dog with a lot of energy and a lot of personality. Schipperkes are playful, energetic, and loving little dogs that can also have a bit of a mischievous streak. They love being around their favorite people and tend to get along well with children. They thrive on being the center of attention and have a high prey drive, which can be a challenge when it comes to other dogs and other pets. They also tend to be wary of strangers, but a well-socialized Schipperke will tend to warm up once introduced. Schipperkes are also prone to alert barking and you will want to train your dog to stop barking early on to keep it from becoming a nuisance. If the other parent breed is similar, then you can expect a similar temperament from a Schipperke Mix. You can also meet the mother in person. This will give you an idea of what her temperament is like and what behavior she has been modeling for her puppies. Although the breeder should have started some socialization and training, it is up to you to continue them once you bring a puppy home. A Schipperke is a highly adaptable dog that does well in apartments and larger homes as long as they get enough exercise. Because of their high prey drive, they should only be let off-leash in secure areas. They thrive in moderate climates, but are sensitive to very hot or very cold weather. They do not like to be left alone for long periods of time. If the other parent breed is also highly adaptable, then you can expect the same from a Schipperke Mix. You still want to talk to the breeder to make sure you are aware of any potential quirks the other parent breed could introduce. Reputable breeders screen their dogs to avoid passing preventable issues to puppies. So, make sure you are asking about the health of the parents and about any tests or clearances that have been done. From the Schipperke side, potential health concerns to be aware of in a Schipperke Mix include luxating patella , Legg-Calve-Perthes disease, eye problems, and thyroid issues. A Schipperke is highly intelligent, picks up on things quickly, and is known to be able to learn almost anything — as long as they want to. They are relatively independent dogs that can have a stubborn streak. If the other parent breed is similar, then you can expect a moderately trainable Schipperke Mix. If the other parent breed is easier to train, you will still want to be prepared to enroll in puppy training classes. In addition to training, there are several benefits of puppy training classes , so they tend to be a good idea regardless. A Schipperke Mix can inherit a coat similar to one of their parents or a coat that is a mix of both of them. If they inherit the Schipperke coat, they will shed moderately year-round with heavier seasonal shedding. Weekly brushing and a bath as needed are the minimum; daily brushing is recommended during seasonal shedding. Once or twice monthly nail trimming is enough to keep them from growing too long. Weekly ear checks with careful cleanings as needed can help prevent ear infections. Good dental care for dogs like daily tooth brushing or daily use of an enzyme toothpaste can help prevent dental diseases later in life. Although they sit in a moderate range, Schipperkes are energetic dogs that will have bursts of high energy when they play. If the other parent breed is similar, then you can expect the same from a Schipperke Mix. If the other parent breed sits in a lower or higher activity range, then you will want to be prepared for a mix to be somewhere in that potential range. Fully-grown Schipperkes usually stand inches tall at the shoulder and weigh pounds. The other breed can affect this, especially if they are the mother, so you do want to ask the breeder about them. A Schipperke generally lives for years on average. Although the other parent breed may affect this slightly, you should be able to expect a similar average life span from a Schipperke Mix. The breed retains its companionship and herding instincts to this day. The Poodle is a German breed used to hunt Waterfowl. In Germany, it would often accompany fishermen, tugging at their lines and prey. After the wars, the demand for the Poodle declined in Germany. Their demand shifted to France and other countries, where they became show dogs and performing dogs. Usually, the coat should be dense and slightly wiry. The eyes of the Schipper-Poo should be almond-shaped in general. The facial features depend highly on the parent it takes after. However, the muzzle of the Schipper-Poo should usually be tapered. The ears of the Schipper-Poo should be erect mostly and sometimes drooping. The body, in general, should be lean with dense muscles. Normally the males can be anywhere between 13 and 20 inches high. The females are only a bit shorter, with their heights of 10 to 12 inches. Both genders will have a weight ranging between 26 to 40 lbs. Normally the lifespan should be close to 13 or 14 years. However, with the right routines, you should expect it to have an even longer lifespan. The current maximum lifespan for this doggie is 15 years. You can find more information about everything in their respective sections. There are other figures that we can explain in more detail and accuracy. An aggregate of these additional figures comes to dollars. They have been explained in detail below. The Poodle is essentially a show-dog. It loves learning new tricks. If it takes after the Schipperke, you may have to switch up your training game. Try to use different days and timings for different parts of the training process. For example, giving it agility drills early in the morning and leisurely walks in the evening. It will not be aggressive or attack any of the other canines without any reason. You should still have it socialized with other canines and felines from an early age. It will reduce the chances of shyness development. Its small size also makes it a good apartment dog. Caring for Schipper-Poo The following section will detail and elaborate on the most important things that your doggie could need or will need. You will also have to keep the diet as clean as possible for this canine. Also, it needs to be kept in mind that the nutritional requirements of most canines are different from one another. The Poodle coat is mostly harder to manage compared to the Schipperke coat. However, irrespective of the coat, it needs to be brushed every day with a good Dog Brush. You will also have to bathe it more frequently compared to other dogs. Be sure to dry it out thoroughly afterward; some people use a Dog Hair Dryer to do the job for them. You should also keep its nails short and manageable. Schipper-Poo Activity Levels For the people who think that the Schipper-Poo is all about cuddling and cutesiness, you could not be more wrong. Beneath its calm and cuddly demeanor is a cyclone, ready to churn out of control. Your job is to keep that cyclone from building up. You can do that by taking it for walks and depleting its energy. Normally 40 to 50 minutes of daily activity is a necessity when it comes to this dog. So instead, why not give them something healthy and tasty. For example, giving them some Dental Chews. These can give your doggie some essential jaw action as well as keep their teeth clean. Another thing that you can do for your doggie is to give them some Rubber Dog Toys. These will not only keep your pet engaged but will also save your furniture and slippers from the menacing maws of your canine. There are at least ten conditions that we could mention right now, but what good would naming them do? The point is that we cannot diagnose any of the conditions that could afflict your doggie. You will need professional guidance for this. The only person who can professionally diagnose the conditions that your doggie can face is a vet. Breeds Similar to Schipper-Poo.
