A stock image of Golden retriever puppies, none of which are green, unfortunately. In fact, it was a strange shade of green. Advertisement Justice was concerned about the color at first, however, she quickly realized the puppy was otherwise healthy, as were the eight other siblings. After a few days or weeks of licking from its mother, Mojito will be bright white, just like the rest of the litter. While extremely rare, green puppies are not as uncommon as you might think. She's been named "Verdant," and is healthy, her owners have confirmed. Biliverdin is a greenish color and can be found in bile, bruises, the placenta of dogs , and many other biological phenomena. Scientists have even found biliverdin in the shells of 6-million-year-old dinosaur eggs. On the subject of strangely colored animal babies, it crops up across the animal kingdom. Most orca calves are born with a peachy-orange coloring , instead of white. It's thought this is due to being born without a thick layer of blubber, so their blood vessels near the surface of their skin can be seen more clearly. Just like these green puppies, the color fades as they mature. The babies are nursing with the new mom, but one puppy is clearly different from the rest. A male pup with a pistachio green hue can be seen atop the pile, with the owner zooming in to give viewers a closer look. A stock photo shows golden retriever puppies. A TikTok video of nursing golden retrievers reveals that one of them is colored green, a rare occurrence. They may sound made-up, but green golden retrievers are real, although the reason they exist is pretty gross. The green coloring is caused by biliverdin, a chemical that creates bile, according to Rover. When a dog is pregnant, the hormones can cause changes in her bodily functions. This can include her poo, which can turn green because of extra biliverdin. When puppies are born, they usually pass their "meconium"—aka their first poo—within 48 hours. Occasionally, they do this while still inside the womb. If the mom dog has high levels of biliverdin and the developing puppy passes the meconium early, this can lead to high levels of bile in the birth sac. If the puppy has light-colored fur, the pigment of the bile can stain its coat, turning the animal green. This process isn't harmful to the dog, just extremely uncommon. The phenomenon is not unique to golden retrievers and can occur with any breed if the pup has light-toned fur.
UKC Classification: Companion Dog Prevalence: Common Poodles come in three sizes or varieties: the standard over 15 inches and 45 to 70 pounds [20 to 32 kilograms] , the miniature 10 or 11 inches to 15 inches and 12 to 20 pounds [5 to 9 kilograms] and the toy less than 10 inches and about five to seven pounds [2 to 3 kilograms]. All the Poodles share a square outline, with a long, elegant neck and a straight back. The tail is docked, but not short, so it can wave gaily. Poodles tend to have a leggy appearance and a long muzzle combined with dropped ears. They move with a springy, lively gait. The coat of the poodle is its crowning glory. Dogs competing in the breed ring must have a specific clip, with areas of extravagant hair coupled with skin tight clipping. These clips actually developed for a reason: they provided thick coat over the joints and chest to keep the dog warm while working in cold water. Many guardians elect to keep their dogs in a kennel or working clip, with the coat clipped fairly short and pompoms left on the head and tail. A few poodles are seen with a corded coat, in which the tight curls form long bands like dreadlocks. The poodle coat should be tight and curly unless brushed out vigorously. Poodles are known as good dogs for people with allergies because the hair does not routinely shed out; instead, it mat to itself. This is why poodles need clipping or frequent grooming because the mats can be painful. The commonly seen colors of poodles are silver, black, white, apricot and chocolate. Reds do appear as well as creams and blues. Parti-colors such black and white are not considered acceptable in the show ring. Personality: Poodles are notorious for their intelligence and ease of training. They are lively, active, fun-loving dogs with a sense of the ridiculous. Poodles thrive on attention and can develop bad habits such as nuisance barking if ignored or left alone. The smaller poodles can be aggressive to people outside their families or to other dogs. They should have early socialization to other people and pets and a firm hand in training. Poodles can be protective of their families and homes. It should be remembered that poodles are basically hunting dogs in elegant attire and do require exercise and training to be at their best as companion dogs. Living With: Poodles are "easy keepers," and guardians should not indulge them with treats too much. They can easily become overweight. Many poodles live a comparatively long life, with the smaller poodles reaching as much as 17 years of age, while the standards tend to live for 12 to 14 years. Grooming is a fact of life with a poodle. With the tendency of the coat to mat, poodles should have a close clip or be groomed almost daily. Show coats require frequent baths, the tying up of topknots and ear fringes and oiling of the coat to keep it from getting brittle. A steady hand on the scissors is also important. Poodles are good family dogs — fun, energetic, smart and easy to train. They do best with plenty of exercise for both mind and body and prefer to be with people most of the time. They are not good kennel dogs. Socialization should begin early and include other people, other pets and the grooming routine. These dogs are exceptional jumpers, so be careful with your yard fencing! History: While commonly associated with France, the poodle actually is of German origin, possibly descending from the barbet. The breed became "set" in type in the s, although earlier examples of poodle-like dogs are known. The word poodle comes from the German "pudel" meaning puddle or splash. Poodles started out as hunting dogs, especially good at water retrieving. With their quick intelligence and desire to please, they branched out into performing dogs with traveling troupes and circuses. Aristocracy, particularly in France, discovered the breed and delighted in both the personality and the incredible hair coat, which could be shaped in myriad ways. Despite the new image of the poodle as an elegant, somewhat spoilt aristocrat, we should remember that they are still called "caniches" in France, meaning duck dog. The three varieties constitute one of the most popular breeds in the world. Poodles shine in the glamour of the show ring, but they also work as guide dogs for the blind and police dogs. They compete in all dog sports, from running the Iditarod and herding sheep to obedience and agility. Related Pet Care Articles. Proper care for the Poodle will involve many aspects that will all work in combination to maintain excellent health and promote learning and good behavioral habits. It is important to establish a foundation of proper care during the puppy stage that will carry over throughout the Poodle's life. We will discuss: The items that you should have to care for a Poodle puppy Details on the 5 most important tips for proper care - Feeding, house training, offering the right amount of exercise, grooming and how to offer a healthy environment. Toy Poodles and Mini's will be puppies for the 1st year; standards mature at a somewhat slower rate and are considered to be puppies until the age of 2 years old. During this time, much care is needed for both physical growth and mental development. Bringing your new Poodle home is not as simple as just picking up your new family member from the breeder. Good care involves planning ahead. It helps to have all needed items well in advance so that you can focus on the puppy without having to rush out for a needed supply items. One of the most important elements to be aware of is that no matter what the puppy has been fed since he or she began eating solid food, you should have the exact same brand on hand. Quickly switching foods can cause upset stomach and other issues…and in the case of a puppy it can be the cause of hypoglycemia. A slow change must be made. If you opt to go with a different brand or to home cook, have enough of the 'old' food on hand for several weeks, as well as the 'new' so that that you can make gradual changeover. A quality dog bed — A new puppy will feel stress going to even the best of new homes. This is why making sure that you have a nice, soft, comfortable dog bed is important. You should show your Poodle that this is the area in which he can rest, sleep or just get away from noise when things seem to overwhelming. If you will be leaving your puppy home alone during the day, it is best to have the bed placed in the area where he will be staying. A gated off section of a room or inside a canine playpen works well. The entrance to this can be left open when you are home with your puppy can of course, closed off when you are away. In this way, the puppy will become accustomed to the area. If you will be home with your puppy, place this in the corner of room that is frequently used but not chaotic. Dogs like to have their own quiet spot, but not feel isolated. Walking and ID accessories — Along with a retractable leash and a collar for ID purposes, it is highly recommended to have a harness for your puppy. Toy Poodles no matter what the age and all Mini and Standard puppies should have on a harness and not a collar when they are on a leash. When a leash is connected to a dog collar, this can create too much tension on the neck, which can cause collapsed trachea. The trachea windpipe is protected by rings of cartilage…when this happens, those rings collapse in, causing pain and breathing problems. These can be purchased at a pet supply store and come in many unique and interesting designs so that your Poodle always looks stylish. If you are not sure which harness would be best for your Poodle puppy, you may wish to look to both 'Accessories' and 'Clothing- Harness' in the Poodle Specialty Shoppe. A Car Safety Seat - Long ago cars did not even have seat belts for humans. But now, of course, we all know how many lives they save. The very same is true for dogs. Even if you are a conscientious driver, you cannot be in control of those who are driving near you. Be sure to secure your Poodle into a canine car safety seat. All it takes is 1 second of you having to quickly brake for your Poodle to go sliding off of the seat, completely unprotected. These are also great for dogs that are prone to car sickness. A raised booster seat will assist a puppy in being able to look out of the window which reduces motion sickness. However, choosing high quality toys that can stand up to continual chewing and hold a puppy's interest is better. Puppies are full of energy and filled with curiosity; having a good supply of toys at all times will be very helpful. Puppies that are in the teething phase will be experiencing discomfort and teething toys will help to sooth sore gums and offer a chewing outlet See also: Poodle teething Grooming Supplies - Poodle care certainly involves proper grooming. This includes nails, dewclaws, bathes, drying, wrapping, trimming, clipping and topknots. See also: Bathing a Poodle Clothes - Particularly for tiny toy Poodles, protection against the elements should be implemented as needed. During cold, icy winters the use of canine shoes or paw wax helps protect paw pads from ice melt chemicals and aids with traction. A sweater or cute vest can keep a small Poodle puppy from becoming chilled. During hot months, shoes help protect sensitive paws from hot surfaces. Bowls - Plastic bowls often contain heavy dyes that can cause staining on a Poodle's coat. In addition, tiny scratches that easily develop in plastic bowls can also harbor dangerous bacteria. It is best to use stainless steel or ceramic bowls for both food and water. Dishes should shallow so that a puppy can easily reach both food and water without bumping their heads or straining to reach. Toys and Mini's may like raised bowls. However, Standards - who are prone to bloat- should only eat and drink from bowls that are at floor level. Free feed until 3 months old leaving food out at all times and then give your puppy 3 meals per day plus healthy snacks. Please choose your food wisely; cheaper foods with fillers will not offer the proper nutrition needed to aid with the rapid growth that is associated with the puppy phase. You will find that if you reserve snacks and treats as rewards for training, housebreaking and command training will go smoother. Read more: Feeding a Poodle 2- Start house training right away, keeping in mind that it is your commitment to the process that will bring about success. Generally, housebreaking takes 2 to 3 months. If your Poodle puppy will be expected to use an outdoor area, do not focus too much on indoor training when the pup is home along, since it is difficult for puppies to learn 2 different methods. Do keep in mind that young puppies should not be over-exercised since it can interfere with growth plate development; however a daily 20 to 30 minute per walk is perfect. Walks allow a puppy to release pent up energy, it expands their view of the world and is a good staring point for socialization techniques and learning proper heeling. Poodles are generally very active dogs. Aside from a walk each day, this breed loves to run , jump and show off their agility capabilities. Playing catch, Frisbee or training your Poodle to jump through hoops will keep them in good health, both physically and mentally. See also: Poodle Exercise Requirements 4- Begin a routine of grooming and care. While many puppies will balk at the idea of being brushed or having teeth cleaned, doing these tasks on a regular basis allows a puppy to become accustomed to being touched and taken care of. Taking care of the teeth during the puppy stage is important since dental hygiene will affect the adult teeth that have not yet erupted. Read more: Poodle dental care 5- Limit stress, focus on fun. One of the most important elements of Poodle care is to offer a loving, safe environment. Puppies and dogs are sensitive to their owner's moods and the atmosphere of the house in general. Puppies can become easily stressed in noisy, chaotic homes. Puppies should be given a designated area to retreat and rest if feeling overwhelmed. Often, a gated off area that is secured when a pup is home alone, but the entrance is open when owners are home works best. Speak to your pup in a pleasant voice and remember that positive reinforcement for good behavior works much better than scolding for bad behavior. Take time to puppy proof the home, clearing the floors of any small items and stowing away shoes and other objects to higher ground. This should be done before bringing a puppy home but also on a regular basis. Although a playful pup sounds endearing, consider how many games of fetch or tag you want to play each day, and whether you have kids or other dogs who can stand in as playmates for the dog. Although it hardly seems possible when you look at a primped-up Poodle in the show ring, the breed was originally a water retriever, a job that requires jumping in the water to fetch waterfowl for hunters. In fact, the English name poodle is derived from the German word pudel, or pudelin, which means to splash in the water. And in France, Poodles are called Caniche, a name derived from chien canard, meaning duck dog. There are three sizes of Poodle, all considered part of the same breed: going from smallest to largest, these are the Toy, the Miniature, and the Standard. The Standard is probably the oldest of the three varieties, and some still carry on the Poodle tradition of working as a water retriever. No matter the size, Poodles are renowned for a playful but dignified personality and keen intelligence. Despite his regal air, the Poodle is no snob. These are people-friendly dogs who want to stay close to their families — they get lonely when left by themselves for long periods — and are always up for a good game. This is especially common among the smaller varieties — Miniature and Toy Poodles — who are more likely to be coddled and untrained. The Poodle coat needs a lot of upkeep to stay beautiful and healthy. Most Poodle owners take their dogs to a professional groomer every three to six weeks. If you want to save money on grooming expenses, you can learn to do it yourself, but it takes time and effort. Poodles have weepy eyes that can stain the surrounding hair. To cut down on stains, gently wipe down the face daily with an alcohol-free pet wipe or washcloth dipped in warm water. To get a healthy dog, never buy a puppy from an irresponsible breeder, puppy mill, or pet store. Poodle History The Poodle is one of the oldest breeds developed especially for hunting waterfowl. Most historians agree that the Poodle originated in Germany, but developed into his own distinct breed in France. Many believe that the breed is the result of crosses between several European water dogs, including Spanish, Portuguese, French, German, Hungarian, and Russian water dogs. After that, the breed arrived in Gaul where it was used for his hunting abilities. Yet another theory is that the Poodle descended from dogs that were brought out of the Asian steppes by the conquering North African Berbers and eventually found his way into Portugal in the 8th Century with the Moors. Whatever its ancestry, this is a very old breed. Illustrations of Poodle-like dogs adorn Egyptian and Roman artifacts and tombs dating from the first centuries B. The drawings and statues show dogs that look very much like modern-day Poodles, bringing in game nets, herding animals, and retrieving game from marshes. The Toy and Miniature varieties were created by breeding small Poodles to each other, not by breeding Poodles to smaller breeds. The French used the larger Standard Poodle for duck hunting, and the mid-sized Miniature Poodle to sniff out truffles in the woods. They trained Poodles to perform tricks, dressing them in costumes and sculpting their coats into fanciful shapes to add to their stage appeal. Wealthy patrons took note and started clipping, decorating, and even dying their own Poodle companions. The Kennel Club in England registered their first Poodle in , with the first British club for Poodle fanciers arriving on the scene two years later. The Poodle Club of America was founded in , but disbanded shortly thereafter. Poodle enthusiasts reestablished the club in .Poodles were fairly rare in the U. By the mids, however, the Poodle had become the most popular breed in the country, a position he held for more than 20 years. Poodle Size There are three sizes of Poodle: toy, miniature, and standard. The Toy Poodle stands up to 10 inches tall, and weighs about six to nine pounds. The Miniature Poodle stands 11 to 15 inches tall and weighs 15 to 17 pounds. The Standard Poodle stands 15 inches and taller usually 22 inches ; males weigh 45 to 70 pounds and females weigh 45 to 60 pounds. Some owners and breeders think the smaller Toy and Miniature Poodles are a bit more high-strung than the Standard; however, other breeders and owners disagree with this theory. An outstanding trait of the Poodle is his intelligence. He is often said to have human-like intelligence, an amazing cleverness that astounds his owners. Of course, smart dogs can be difficult to live with. They learn fast — good habits and bad — and they remember everything. Health clearances prove that a dog has been tested for and cleared of a particular condition. You can confirm health clearances by checking the OFA web site offa. More severe signs occur when a dog is stressed or when potassium levels get high enough to interfere with heart function, causing severe shock and death. Gastric Dilatation-Volvulus: Commonly called bloat, this is a life-threatening condition that affects large, deep-chested dogs like Poodles, especially if they are fed one large meal a day, eat rapidly, drink large volumes of water after eating, and exercise vigorously after eating. Bloat occurs when the stomach is distended with gas or air and then twists. The dog is unable to belch or vomit to rid itself of the excess air in its stomach, and the normal return of blood to the heart is impeded. Blood pressure drops and the dog goes into shock. Without immediate medical attention, the dog can die. Suspect bloat if your dog has a distended abdomen, is salivating excessively and retching without throwing up. He also may be restless, depressed, lethargic, and weak with a rapid heart rate. Cushings Disease Hyperadrenocorticism : This condition occurs when the body produces too much cortisol. It can be due to an imbalance of the pituitary or adrenal gland, or it can occur when a dog has too much cortisol resulting from other conditions. Common signs are excessive drinking and urination. If your Poodle exhibits these two symptoms, take it to the veterinarian. There are treatments to help with this disease, including surgery and medication. Epilepsy: A common cause of seizures in all varieties of Poodles is idiopathic epilepsy. It often is inherited and can cause mild or severe seizures. Seizures may be exhibited by unusual behavior, such as running frantically as if being chased, staggering, or hiding. Seizures are frightening to watch, but the long-term prognosis for dogs with idiopathic epilepsy is generally very good. Canine hip dysplasia is inherited, with environmental factors sometimes playing a large part in its development. Over time, there is degeneration of the joint that can cause arthritis and pain, even lameness. Excess weight, excessive or prolonged exercise before maturity, a fast growth rate, and high-calorie or supplemented diets can contribute to the development of canine hip dysplasia. Veterinary care includes nutritional supplements, medication and, in some cases, surgery. Hypothyroidism: Hypothyroidism is caused by is an under active thyroid gland. Legg-Perthes Disease: This is another disease involving the hip joint. Many toy breeds are prone to this condition. When your Poodle has Legg-perthes, the blood supply to the head of the femur the large rear leg bone is decreased, and the head of the femur that connects to the pelvis begins to disintegrate. Usually, the first signs of Legg-Perthes, limping and atrophy of the leg muscle, occur when puppies are 4 to 6 months old. The scar tissue that results from the surgery creates a false joint and the puppy is usually pain free. Patellar Luxation: The patella is the kneecap. Luxation means dislocation of an anatomical part as a bone at a joint. Patellar luxation is when the knee joint often of a hind leg slides in and out of place, causing pain. This can be crippling, but many dogs lead relatively normal lives with this condition. Early in the disease, affected dogs become night-blind. As the disease progresses, they lose sight during the day. Many affected dogs adapt to their limited or loss of vision very well, as long as the surroundings remain the same. Optic Nerve Hypoplasia: This condition is a congenital failure if development of the optic nerve. It causes blindness and abnormal pupil response in the affected eye. This genetic condition is difficult to diagnose and often is mistaken for hypothyroidism, allergies, or other conditions. When a dog has SA, the sebaceous glands in the skin become inflamed for unknown reasons, and are eventually destroyed. These glands typically produce sebum, a fatty secretion that aids in preventing drying of the skin. Affected dogs typically have dry, scaly skin with hair loss on top of the head, neck, and back. Severely affected dogs can have thickened skin and an unpleasant odor, along with secondary skin infections. Although the problem is primarily cosmetic, it can be uncomfortable for the dog. Your vet will perform a biopsy of the skin if SA is suspected. Treatment options vary. The main symptom is excessive bleeding after an injury or surgery. Other symptoms include nosebleeds, bleeding gums, or bleeding in the stomach or intestines. There is no cure, and a blood transfusion from the blood of normal dogs is currently the only treatment. Research is underway for new treatments, including medication. A vet can test your dog for the condition. Dogs with this condition should not be bred. Poodle Care Poodles do just fine in any type of home, from apartments to estates, so long as they have regular exercise and plenty of human companionship. They prefer to live indoors with the family, particularly the smaller Toy and Miniature Poodles, since they have no trouble getting their ya-yas out in the house. That goes for Toy and Miniature Poodles as well. Many owners of small dogs skip training, and wind up with a badly behaved dog. Poodle Feeding Recommended daily amount: Standards, 1. Note: How much your adult dog eats depends on his size, age, build, metabolism, and activity level. It almost goes without saying that a highly active dog will need more than a couch potato dog. Limit treats, keep him active, and feed in meals rather than leaving food available at all times. Keep your Poodle in good shape by measuring his food and feeding him twice a day rather than leaving food out all the time. First, look down at him. You should be able to see a waist. Then place your hands on his back, thumbs along the spine, with the fingers spread downward. You should be able to feel but not see his ribs without having to press hard. For more on feeding your Poodle, see our guidelines for buying the right food , feeding your puppy , and feeding your adult dog. Many allergic people are able to keep a Poodle with no reaction. The hair is curly, wiry, and dense, and this unique texture can be trimmed, clipped, groomed, shaved, and otherwise manipulated into all kinds of fanciful shapes. Poodles are high-maintenance dogs. He requires regular grooming, every three to six weeks, sometimes more often, to keep the coat in good condition. If you are considering a Poodle, consider the upkeep of the coat and expense of grooming. There are many ways to style the coat for easier care. In fact, many owners simply shave it off. Even when clipped short, your Poodle will need to be brushed , bathed , and trimmed every three to six weeks, sometimes more often, to keep the coat clean, short, and tangle free. Even if you let a professional handle the complicated stuff, your Poodle needs daily brushing. Many Poodles have weepy eyes that stain the hair under their eyes. To cut down on staining, wipe around the eyes and face every day with an alcohol-free pet wipe or washcloth dampened with warm water. Breeds with drop-down ears are prone to ear infections because the ear canal stays dark and moist. Sometimes, this hair needs to be plucked. Daily brushing is even better if you want to prevent gum disease and bad breath. Short, neatly trimmed nails keep the feet in good condition and prevent your legs from getting scratched when your Poodle enthusiastically jumps up to greet you. Handle his paws frequently — dogs are touchy about their feet — and look inside his mouth. As you groom, check for sores, rashes, or signs of infection such as redness, tenderness, or inflammation on the skin, in the nose, mouth, and eyes, and on the feet. Eyes should be clear, with no redness or discharge. Your careful weekly exam will help you spot potential health problems early. As with every breed, you should always teach children how to approach and touch dogs, and always supervise any interactions between dogs and young children to prevent any biting or ear or tail pulling on the part of either party. No dog, no matter how friendly, should ever be left unsupervised with a child. Poodles who grow up with other dogs or pets in the house — or who have plenty of opportunities to interact with them in group training classes, dog parks, and the like — will enjoy their company. If your Poodle is used to being the only pet in the household, however, he may need some time and special training to help him accept a newcomer. Here are ten interesting facts about Poodles. Poodles can not only learn a vast repertoire of tricks from walking on two paws to jumping through hoops, but they also are exceptionally observant with their human companions and often behave like us. Without a doubt, poodles intelligence and athleticism is a big reason you can often see them in circuses and showrooms. Any poodle person will agree that poodles are easy to train using the usual techniques of repetition, patience, and rewards. When done correctly, there are almost no limits to what poodles can learn. Because poodles are so intelligent, they require lots of mental stimulation to prevent boredom. We heard one story of a Spoo who was left home for a few hours and cured his boredom by removing the shoelaces from every pair of shoes in the closet. Amazingly, he placed the laces all in one pile, and the shoes in another pile. The human parent returned home to find their Spoo proudly admiring their handiwork. Clearly this standard poodle was bored and needed some stimulation! Train with word comprehension — The average canine can learn around words during their lifetime. A Poodle can learn up to different words and commands. Engage with their senses — Imagine what life would be like if we had a heightened sense of smell and hearing. We would all stop to smell the flowers every time we passed by a fragrant patch. Poodles have extraordinary abilities so take them on adventures and enjoy the outdoors. Long walks on the beach, hikes, camping trips, and exploring a new terrain provide your Poodle the physical exercise needed for a healthy body and the stimulation for their senses. Even while at home, poodle parents often leave the TV on with engaging entertainment think Discovery or Animal Planet , or play classical music when they go out. These are examples of the kind of stimulation poodles respond well to. Problem-solving tests — Poodles have excellent problem-solving ability, they have the capacity to comprehend unknown situations and respond appropriately. At a recent dog show, we saw groups of Standard Poodles in advanced obedience and agility competitions. No other breed that day was even close to what the poodles demonstrated in the ring. One tip poodle parents have is to provide advanced dog puzzles that have sections to hide kibble or training treats. Poodles Come in Three Sizes The original Poodle stands over two feet tall at the shoulder and is built for hunting, meaning it has the capacity for great athleticism. Over time, as hunting became less common, and their intelligence became the sought-after characteristic. Breeders found that having two smaller sizes— with the same personality and intelligence, made the Poodle breed a popular option for pet parents. Poodle coats are hypoallergenic, and naturally curly but with regular grooming and brushing can have an elegant look for a night on the town. Typical colors are black, white, brown, red, parti, grey, blue, silver and apricot. Standard Poodle — The standard Poodle is over 15 inches tall. Although, they typically range from 22 to 27 inches at the shoulder and weigh between 45 and 70 pounds. And weight between pounds. Miniature Poodle — Mini Poodles are significantly smaller, standing between 11 and 15 inches at the shoulder. While toy Poodles are thought to be equally as intelligent, their voracious energy and excitement often tires them out quickly. Hunting Was Their Original Purpose If you are new to the breed you may not know that poodles were initially bred to assist on hunts. Non-poodle people are not aware of some standard Poodle facts such as how they perform as well as Labradors and other hunting breeds when compared side-by-side. They also fair well during pheasant season and can fetch injured birds without crushing them. If you ever notice the hashtag Pudel on social media now you know it refers to the German name for Poodle. Mushrooms — Poodles also have an incredible sense of smell which comes in handy for mushroom hunters. At an early age around four months , Poodles can be trained to smell truffle mushrooms. Their soft bite can even return them without damaging the fungus. Poodles have hair, not fur. While most dog breeds will shed their fur coat depending on the season, Poodles, who were used for hunting year-round, do not have this luxury and must be groomed regularly. Regardless of how long and floofy their hair is, it will continue to grow and grow. Every Poodle owner knows they need to be regularly groomed in order to keep their hair in check. That means brushing out the coat daily and regular baths to keep their skin clean. It goes back to their intelligence and how self-aware a poodle is about their appearance. If you own a poodle, show them respect and they will return the favor to you. Once every three to six weeks, a poodle needs to be groomed. This includes a deep brush out, combing, trimming, and cleaning. Ears should be cleaned and hair plucked. Remember to put cotton in the ears before bathing so you keep the inside of their ears dry. Shampoos and conditioners — Before you bath your Poodles, they require a thorough brush out. This removes excess hair, removes any small matts and prepares the coat for bathing. Gently scrubs the skin, parting hair and lathering up the soap. Without properly brushing out the coat, grooming and conditioning, their hair will eventually build up and lead to allergens. Or just plain shaggy. How you groom your poodle is your choice, but all that matters is to do it regularly. You can also ask your groomer for advice on how long to keep the coat. Like with any dog, be sure to keep an eye out for ticks and fleas. Ticks can cause infections, and fleas can irritate and stress out your dog. Both can be avoided with preventative treatments but regular inspection is advised. Shedding and Hair Problems Poodles typically have very few coat issues, but if you observe shedding or problems, there are a number of conditions that may be the underlying cause. Allergies — There are numerous causes of allergic reactions, from sensitivity to food or treats, to environment, pollen, household cleaning products to shampoos and soaps. If you observe your dog itching away at their skin, try to determine what changed in their life to identify the cause. Sometimes a change in diet may be necessary. We are seeing more and more poodles switching to Lucy Pet foods because of the focus on gut health, the quality proteins, and the pumpkin in the diet. Hot Spots — This can range from a small patch of hair loss, to dry flaky skin to a more serious blistered skin patch. A Hot Spot is merely an areas of skin that is infected and or inflamed and can be quite uncomfortable for your dog. This condition is called acute moist dermatitis are recognizable as itchy, painful skin lesions that result from constant licking, biting, and scratching of one area. Keeping your dog bathed and clean skin regularly with a skin soothing, calming oatmeal based shampoo helps. There are also several over-the-counter hot spot topical sprays and creams available. For a more persistent hot spot, your vet can provide a shot to calm down the irritation or a prescription for a mild antibiotic. Hormone imbalance — Although less common, Poodles can experience hypothyroidism, which decreases the production of thyroxine. Hairdos with Purpose Not only must Poodle owners groom our dogs regularly, but we pride ourselves on how fancy of a hairdo a Poodle can sport when we want to. On more than one occasion, Poodle parents have had to explain to a less-informed bystander the origins of the poodle show cut. To make them agile in the water, Poodle owners would keep their hindquarters free of hair, while providing enough warmth in the chest and extremities to prevent sickness from the cold waters. Hypoallergenic One of the most appreciated Poodle dog facts is that their hair is hypoallergenic and they experience minimal shedding. While poodles are naturally hypoallergenic , they must be brushed, bathed and groomed regularly. Their skin can carry as much dandruff and allergens as any other dog if not kept clean and hygienic. Because Standard Poodles are hypoallergenic, and have advanced intelligence, they are often used as Guide Dogs for visually impaired persons who themselves have allergies and would otherwise be unable to have a Guide Dog of other breeds that shed. So Standard Poodles can be working dogs as well as show dogs or family pets. Perfect for Families There are several reasons people say that Poodles are the perfect dog for families. Trainable — As mentioned earlier, Poodles are easily trained. They can become housebroken and learn an extensive series of words and commands that help the family. Plus, their hyper-intelligent nature allows them to use those lists of commands to communicate with the family. Poodles are known to bring toys or a leash to their owners when they want to play. We know one standard poodle who regularly puts his toys back in the toy box after he is finished playing with it. Temperament — Poodles are even tempered, observant, happy, eager, athletic, highly intelligent and possess a near-human like presence. Due to their natural hunting instinct, Poodles are prone to be actively alert to watch wildlife in the yard and often react and hunt squirrels, chipmunks, rabbits, birds and deer that they see in their yard. Poodle owners will observe that Standard Poodles gravitate to other Standards they meet in public settings, such as a park or at the groomer. Truth be told, Poodles prefer hanging around their family over meeting new friends. Here at Lucy Pet we have two Standard Poodles who come to our office each day. They enjoy walking up and down the hallways, visiting various team members and just checking in, and they almost always ignore the other dogs in our office. Poodles can Lead or Follow Because of their awareness and remarkable intelligence, Poodles need the stimulation that comes with having a dominant figure in their life. If they do not have a leader, they will quickly assume the role and become dominant and hard to train. Dogs are pack animals, and they know that without a strong leader, the pack will suffer. If they sense that you have unstable or nervous emotions, they will take charge and assume a leadership role to do their part. Very Few Health Concerns Poodles are generally considered to be a very sturdy breed with few health issues. Their life expectancy ranges from years. Through the long history of genetically breeding calm, compassionate, and intelligent dog, most Poodles live a perfectly healthy long life. Below are some of the most common Poodle health issues to be aware of. Also known as hypoadrenocorticism, it is insufficient production of adrenal hormones by the adrenal gland. Since these hormones are essential for life, this is an extremely serious disease and it must be treated as such. It can be extremely easy to miss this disease. Hip dysplasia — Poodles like other dogs can experience hip dysplasia. You may notice some dogs standing up only using their front paws, or they may be reluctant to join in on playtime. This could be a result of pain in their hips. If the pressure is not released by surgical intervention, this can quickly become life-threatening. Be sure to learn the symptoms of bloat in order to be prepared should the situation arise. Poodles and other large-chested dogs suffer from this disorder. The key is to react extremely fast and go directly to a Veterinary Hospital if you notice symptoms of extreme lethargy in your dog. Cushings Disease-There are 3 forms of Cushings Disease. Most dogs have the more common form, Pituitary Dependent PD. With this form the dogs have a slow growing form of cancer that is located in the pituitary gland. The next form is the Non Pituitary. Here there is a tumor in one or both of the adrenal glands. This drug comes in many forms and can cause problems with its long term use. Epilepsy— Seizures in dogs can be caused by a variety of factors. Hypothyroidism Hypothyroidism is a malfunctioning thyroid which is caused by the inadequate production of the thyroid hormone. Typical symptoms may include obesity, excessive hunger, skin conditions, irregular heat cycles bitches , excessive coarse coat texture, inability to stay warm, and lethargy.

With their signature bat ears and expressive eyes, French Bulldogs, or "Frenchies" as they are lovingly known, have captured the hearts of many dog lovers around the globe, consistently ranking among the most popular breeds. Renowned for their easy maintenance and the ability to thrive in apartment living, French Bulldogs are a city dweller's delight. Their small size, typically weighing under 28 pounds, makes them perfectly suited to compact urban spaces. However, their charming personalities and heartwarming companionship are universally loved, irrespective of city or countryside living. This breed's laid-back nature does not mean they're devoid of fun and play. On the contrary, French Bulldogs can be quite playful and are known for their often comical and entertaining antics, which only further endears them to their owners. Their affectionate demeanor, combined with a remarkably low barking tendency, makes them a joy to have around the house. French Bulldogs are sturdy, compact, and stocky, with a powerful muscular build that contradicts their small size. They have a smooth coat that comes in a variety of colors, from fawn and brindle to white and grey. Their facial expressions are human-like, and they're known to "talk" using a complex system of yawns, yips, and gargles. However, owning a French Bulldog does come with responsibilities. Their brachycephalic short-nosed nature makes them prone to certain health issues and less tolerant of extreme temperatures. Despite their muscular appearance, they are not the best swimmers, and care should be taken around bodies of water.

Maltese Pregnancy Overview If you have a female Maltese, you probably have a lot of questions about Maltese pregnancy. This section will cover: The age a Maltese should be for a first pregnancy How long pregnancy lasts Signs of pregnancy and how to be sure that a Maltese is expecting Litter size Care tips Whether Maltese puppies on the way are a surprise, a well-planned event, or you are thinking about breeding your dog, this section should help you. Best Age for a First Pregnancy There are 3 ages to keep in mind: The age that a Maltese can become pregnant: As soon as a female enters puberty, which is signaled by her first heat cycle , she can technically become pregnant. For this breed, this will be between 4 and 8 months old. However, it is not recommended to breed a female during her first cycle. A Maltese will not be at her full adult size , her pelvic width will not be at its maximum size, pregnancy can be extremely overwhelming for such a young dog, and breeding may not be successful at any rate since eggs are immature. Still, this is very young for all reasons listed above. Recommended age: It is generally recommended to wait for until a Maltese has had her 2nd or 3rd heat cycle and is at a minimum age of 2 years old. Maltese Pregnancy Stats and Facts Length of gestation is the same for all dog breeds; a Maltese will be pregnant for about 63 days; anywhere from 58 to 65 days is considered normal. The average size of a Maltese litter is 2 - 5 puppies; however having just 1 puppy is not unheard of. Every now and then, a litter can 6 or more pups. A female dog can become pregnant at any time during her heat cycle. Her most fertile time is generally 10 to 15 days from the start of heat. A female can carry a duel-sired litter if she mates with two males within a short window of time. Pseudopregnancy false pregnancy is possible. If so, signs such as enlarged belly and swollen breast tissue typically dissipate after 3 weeks. Pre-pregnancy testing should be done. Aside from a general exam and determining pelvic width, both a cardiac exam and a patella evaluation should be performed to rule out hereditary health issues with this breed and these are AKC recommended tests. For example, a 6 lb. Maltese will gain 1. Signs that a Maltese is Pregnant A female dog's pregnancy will last 9 weeks. Signs will start to be noticeable in weeks 2 and 3. By the beginning of Week 4, signs are very obvious. Swollen stomach. This begins toward the end of Week 2, with a very noticeable distended stomach by Week 4. Nipple changes. Also beginning toward the end of Week 2, with clear signs by Week 3, nipples may become larger, pinker, and some that were previously flush with her skin may now be popped out. There may be some 'morning sickness' that can occur at any time of the day. This is typically seen in Week 2, but may carry into later stages as well. Appetite changes. Increased appetite usually begins by the end of Week 3. Mammary glands become enlarged. Due to milk production, mammary glands will start to fill with colostrum. While this is a gradual process, it is generally noticed in Week 3, with increased fullness as each week goes by. Behavioral changes. Nesting tendencies may been seen as early as Week 3. A Maltese may start to gather up items and keep them together in one spot. She may be more clingy, or want to retreat and rest by herself. Confirming a Maltese is Pregnant If you want to know for sure if your Maltese is pregnant without waiting the 2 to 4 weeks for obvious signs to emerge, there are several tests that can be done at the vet's office. If a pregnancy is suspected, and particularly if it was not planned, a veterinary visit is recommended ASAP to check her overall health, have her pelvic width examined, and discuss her diet. If recommended pre-breeding testing was not performed, this will need to be discussed as well. Maltese Pregnancy Care Tips 1. Do not give your pregnant Maltese any extra calcium food or supplements. Increased calcium during pregnancy excluding right before labor has been connected with eclampsia, more difficult labor, and both calcium deposits and certain joint abnormalities with newborns puppies. Keep her exercising as normal to maintain muscle and endurance which will help her with whelping. Limit jumping. You may want to obtain pet steps or ramps to place against sofas or chairs. Nesting instincts will be strong; if your Maltese does not have her own bed, now is the time for her to have one. Keep other dogs in the house away from her if she seems troubled by them. And, if the sire is present in the house, he should be segregated away from her by Week 5. Also, do not allow him access to her during delivery and do not allow him access to the newborns until they are at least 4 weeks old. Do not use any flea or tick treatment on her without vet approval. By Week 4, the veterinarian may recommend a switch to puppy food to offer a diet higher in fat. As you get closer to the expected whelping time Week 6 or 7 , speak to the vet about starting to offer calcium-rich foods such as whole cottage cheese do not give this earlier in the pregnancy, and do not add this at this time without vet approval. The sign that a Maltese will be ready to give birth will be a drop in body temperature. Therefore, her temperature should be read daily starting on Day .By Day 60, this should be done twice per day. When it drops from its normal and .By Chris Poodles are a fantastic breed of dog — they are intelligent, loyal, and adorable. These dogs are some of the most popular species in America for a good reason. How many puppies can a Poodle have? There are two parts to the question of how many puppies a poodle can have. The first is how many puppies are in a poodle litter. This answer varies, depending on the size, health, and age of your dog. Poodle litters can be anywhere from a single puppy to upwards of ten—these dogs have been known to surprise breeders with their litters! With the number of litters in mind, a standard poodle can generally have anywhere from twenty to thirty puppies in her lifetime. A miniature poodle will have twelve to twenty puppies throughout her breeding career, and a toy poodle can birth four to ten puppies total. These numbers vary, of course, but they are accurate estimates. There are different shades of black coat. How Many Puppies are in a Poodle Litter? As a general rule, the smaller the dog, the fewer puppies she will have. Toy poodles tend to have between one and three puppies per litter, rarely going above three. Most toy poodles give birth to one puppy at a time and are more prone to health issues after breeding. Miniature poodles can have three to five puppies in a litter. Miniature poodles are pretty sturdy breeding dogs. Of course, full-size poodles can have larger litters. These poodles have the largest litter size and have been known to birth from two to fourteen puppies. More than five litters can hurt a dog and increase their chances of post-birth injury and unhealthy puppies. However, if your dog is healthy and well cared for, it will be able to breed up to five times with ease. This rule is especially true for smaller dogs, whose bodies are more fragile and sensitive to pregnancy. Factors That Affect Litter Count Of course, many factors affect how many puppies are born in each litter. These are generally related to the genetics of both parent dogs and the atmosphere surrounding the pregnancy. A healthier, happier dog is more likely to give birth to more puppies because she is surrounded by love and peace. While these factors affect each litter individually, they are only guidelines for taking the best care of your breeder dog. However, it will improve the overall health and happiness of both mothers and babies. Choosing the best dog food for Poodles is tricky — got to look after that coat! Breeder Which breeder you choose can increase the health of your dog. A reputable breeder will have all the information you need to make a decision. You need to be able to trust the breeder with these things. The healthier and happier a mother dog is, the greater her odds of delivering large and healthy litters. Most dog breeds go into heat about twice a year, and it lasts for a week or more. The process can affect how many puppies are in the litter. Does a dog have to be in heat to get pregnant? Yes, but it is a little more complicated than you might think — see our article on dog heat that explains everything you need to know. Some breeders will couple the dogs a few times over these days to ensure that the result is successful. After two heats, a poodle will be fully grown and ready to give birth. The ideal age for a mother is between two and four years old. Dogs become less able to have puppies as they grow older, much like humans. It can also affect how many puppies are in each litter and how many litters the breed dog can have. A healthier sire will decrease risks in pregnancy and birth. The healthier a dog is, the more puppies she could potentially have. A professional breeder knows this and pairs sires and dams based on mutual age, health, genetics, and sometimes even personality. A Miniature gray Poodle enjoying the outdoors. Some breeders can also run tests for potential fur color and ancestry. Good genetics will not only increase the health of the puppies but could also increase the litter size. Healthier poodle mamas will be able to have more puppies and more litters without risking their health. Time of Year Believe it or not, the time of the year that the puppies are born can impact the size of the litter. This phenomenon is one of the great mysteries of breeding dogs, but the trend continues year after year. If your dog is going into heat for a winter litter, be aware that it may be smaller than her spring or summer heat. Plus you will need to consider a heated whelping pad. Final Thoughts Poodles, depending on their size, can birth up to ten puppies in a litter. My wife and I love playing with our active miniature Labradoodle Max. We want all Oodle puppies to be healthy and happy, have lots of fun and be part of the family. Load More. Beige Blue Hues There are two different eye color possibilities that your dog may possibly come in they are: Blue The most common color of the Maltipoo nose is black. Maltipoo Size This small dog can grow up to 14 inches in height .Remember that each dog may vary slightly in size. Most of the time, you will get a very small dog that will stay small most of its life. Maltese Poodle Mix Health Problems If this dog is cared for properly and does not inherit any health conditions from its parents, the average life expectancy is between years. There are no known health conditions of the Maltipoo; however, to choose a healthy dog, its parentage must be checked, and potential owners need to ask reputable breeders whether the parents have been screened for genetic diseases. You should be aware of a few conditions that your Maltese Poodle mix could inherit or get. Patellar Luxation — Patellar Luxation is a common problem associated with small dog breed like the toy versions. It is a knee joint issue where it dislocates and causes pain in the dog. You will need to see a vet to get pain management for your dog for this issue. White Shaker Syndrome — Sometimes smaller dog breeds have issues with separation anxiety, which can cause higher stress like the white shaker syndrome. This is common in small dog breeds and basically, what happens is that the breed has tremors. This does not cause pain in your dog but can get worse as the breed gets older. Skin Irritation — Skin irritation is common among a lot of dog breeds. This usually means your dog will have sensitive skin to shampoos or products used. If that is the case, make sure you are using hypoallergenic products for your dog. Epilepsy — Epilepsy is caused by abnormal brain activity, and that is what makes these seizures. The Toy Poodle is actually known for having this issue, and it does not correlate to anything specific. So just be aware that your Maltese Poodle mix has a possibility of getting this. In addition, you may already know that mixed breeds often have a longer life than the purebred parents due to the breeding out common diseases in the mixed. Living Conditions The Maltipoo dog does not do well in extreme heat, and if it is in a country where it can get very hot, they need to remain in cool and air-conditioned rooms. It is fine to keep this dog inside an apartment or a small condo as long as it gets to go outside on a daily basis as these dogs get bored very easily and like to have a change of environment. Maltipoo Exercise Maltipoos do not need much exercise as they are easily able to tire themselves out through playing. A short daily walk outside is sufficient to allow them to stretch their legs. However, they do have quite a lot of energy, so a small yard would do wonders for the breed as you can play fetch or toys with your dog outside to get your dog tired. Exercise can, of course, combat bad behavior. However, this dog breed does like to have attention on it, so if you are busy and have no time to play, then you may find some mischievous behavior from your dog. Try to take 30 minutes a day from your schedule to play with your Maltipoo, as well as take your dog out for a walk. Maltese Poodle Feeding This is quite a small dog breed, so it will not need a lot of food each day to sustain itself. One cup of high-quality food broken up into smaller meals should be perfect for the Maltese Poodle mix. This designer dog breed needs dog food that is going to have a good source of complete protein, either from beef, chicken, or fish. As a rule of thumb, this dog breed needs 40 calories per pound of body weight per day, so a pound dog will need calories a day in dog food. Pro Tip: When looking for dog food options, search for small breed dog food as this will have the ideal composition of protein, carb, and vegetable ratio to ensure your dog is getting complete nutrition. Maltese Poodle Mix Grooming Depending on what kind of coat the Maltipoo has depends on what kind of grooming is needed. Just like the Poodle, the Maltipoo has very sensitive ears and needs to be kept dry and clean. It is a good idea to have its ears checked every time they have a visit to the vet. Long nails are actually pretty painful for dogs. It will make it harder for them to walk. Make sure you have them clipped at an appropriate level. Do not take too much off, or you will end up cutting into a nerve. Maltipoo Training The Maltipoo is a dog breed known for its loud annoying bark. This is something you can combat if you have walked through the necessary training steps. Training is very important for any dog breed to learn tricks and commands and to learn basic things like socialization and obedience. If you can, start training your Maltese Poodle mix as a puppy. Begin with easy things such as socialization, friendliness, and potty training. After consistent training, your Maltipoo will have it down in no time. Remember to always train with positive reinforcement not to frighten or scare your dog. If you plan to leave your dog at home while at work for long periods of time, we suggest crate training your dog from an early age. If you train your dog at an early age, your Maltipoo should have no problem picking up some of these commands. Again the mixed dog breed can be mischievous when left alone, so crate training will keep your dog in a safe place until you return home. Maltese Poodle Mix Puppies Before running to the closest breeder to you, you need to do some research and make sure you are not purchasing a puppy from a puppy mill. So many people avoid puppy mills due to their inhumane breeding practices and the fact that the puppies are not healthy and either are the parents of the breed. Do some extensive research and find a breeder that can provide proof of their healthy dogs. Ask questions to the breeder you find and see if you can visit the kennel or facility. Mixed breeds are certainly cheaper in price than a purebred breed. Maltese Poodle Mix Litter Size This is a smaller dog breed, so a female will not have as many puppies as a large breed dog will have. You can expect a female to have between three and four puppies in a litter. The puppies will be small and only weigh between 15 and 20 pounds when an adult. Suitability This is a great dog if you want a loving animal for small children. It has a playful nature, and it does not require much exercise, which is why it suits less active families. However, this breed can suffer from separation anxiety , so if you can have someone in your household, giving this dog breed attention would help. Make sure you start training from an early age, as this dog breed may take longer than others. Key Takeaways In this section, you will find the main points that you can remember from the article. This can be from a variety of things, lack of training, or the dog is just trying to tell you it wants attention. Close relatives of the Maltipoo Here are a few breeds that act very similar to the Maltipoo: Maltese. While Maltese mama dogs can potentially have up to five puppies in a litter, the more typical litter size is one to three puppies. Because the Maltese dog is such a small dog in adulthood, it is safer to have smaller litters. Watch a Maltese Dog Give Birth to Puppies While it can be hard to visualize how such a small dog like the Maltese could possibly carry puppies, actually these dogs have been doing so successfully for thousands of years. Unlike some toy-sized dog breeds, Maltese dogs are perfectly capable of carrying a litter of puppies to term and having a natural birth, as this short video showcases. The Unique Maltese Heat Cycle While adult female dogs from many dog breeds will go into heat as often as every six weeks starting as early as four months of age, this is definitely not the case for the Maltese dog breed. The Maltese typically only goes into heat is receptive to becoming pregnant about once every six months. It is important to wait until a Maltese female has had at least one full heat cycle before making an attempt to breed her. However, because Maltese dogs are so tiny, many breeders feel it is safer to wait until the dog is at least two years old. A number of different factors can come into play in determining how many puppies a mother dog might deliver. For general purposes, larger dog breeds tend to have larger litters of puppies. According to the Guinness Book of World Records , the largest litter of puppies ever on record was a whopping 24 puppies. The mother was a giant breed of Neapolitan Mastiff. Compare that with the average size of a litter of Maltese dogs, which is one to three puppies. Use of in vitro fertilization But dog breed is not the only factor that can influence how many puppies a female dog of any breed might have. For people, artificial in vitro fertilization in humans are often more likely to produce multiple births. However, in dogs, the opposite tends to be the case. Veterinarians and breeders believe this is because there is more risk of sperm being less viable when there is a delay in insemination. Age of the female dog Yet another factor that can cause the number of puppies in a litter to go up or down is the age of the mother dog. There are two times when a mother dog tends to have a smaller litter. The first time is when the mother dog gets pregnant the first one or two times. The second time is as a mother dog gets older. However, the litters in between — typically those that are delivered between age two and age five — will be larger than the other litters, if any. Age of the male stud dog Even another consideration that can influence the size of a litter of Maltese puppies is the age of the male dog. Older male dogs tend to have less viable sperm. A male dog that breeds between two and five years of age will have the greatest chance of producing a larger litter of puppies for the dam. Timing of delivery For some reason that veterinarians and breeders do not fully understand, many dog breeds tend to have a larger litter when they give birth in the spring season than in the fall season. Parent dog health and nutrition The diet and overall lifestyle of both parent dogs can also influence the size of the litter and the health of the puppies. When the dam mother dog and sire father dog are fed a healthy, complete, and balanced diet and get enough exercise, they are more likely to produce a larger litter of healthy Maltese puppies. When the mother dog is overweight or obese and does not have a healthy diet and exercise regimen, it is likely the litter will be smaller. Canine genetics Finally, there is no doubt that genetics can play a part in the size of a Maltese litter. Some dogs simply seem to deliver more puppies even when everything else seems to be equal. The typical gestation period pregnancy is around 63 days for female dogs. The average range is from 58 days to 65 days. Her belly will start to swell a bit as the puppies begin to grow. She may also start to feel a bit nauseated — morning sickness happens between weeks two and three of pregnancy. This is due to the start of milk production. This typically takes place between weeks three and four. Four weeks By week four, you will start to see definite behavior changes in your pregnant Maltese. She will be nesting and may start to have mood swings ranging from wanting to be alone to wanting to be everywhere you go. You will see a visibly distended belly by week four, and your Maltese will start to gain weight as the puppies grow. It will be important to monitor her food and fluid intake since she may still be feeling nauseated from morning sickness. You may need to switch her food — always ask your veterinarian for guidance on this. Five to seven weeks By weeks five to seven, your Maltese will have a round tummy and noticeable weight gain. She may be spending more time in her bed or nest, and you should be getting the whelping box, and whelping supplies prepared. A sudden plunge in body temperature is regarded as a reliable sign that your dog is ready to give birth. Until that occurs, be sure to keep your Maltese from jumping for her safety and the safety of the puppies. Sequester her away from other pets if they bother her. You may also want to rearrange your work schedule to be available around the time you expect your Maltese to give birth. One question many new Maltese owners do not even know to ask is whether it is safe to have a female Maltese dog fixed spayed while she has a heat cycle. The heat cycle in female dogs is much like the menstrual cycle in female humans. There is bleeding internally as the uterus sheds its inner pre-pregnancy lining. One of the key signs that a female Maltese is starting her first heat cycle is some amount of vaginal bleeding. For many first-time Maltese owners, this can be scary to see. It is smart to take your dog to the veterinarian just to confirm it is in fact the first heat cycle and not a health issue in the making. Breeding your Maltese can be exciting and rewarding. It can also be scary and heartbreaking. What you want to avoid at all costs is an unplanned pregnancy, which can be expensive, dangerous, and stressful for both you and your dog. Understanding the special challenges of breeding Maltese can help you make the best choice for both you and your female Maltese. I am passionate about all things related to fluffy dogs and love sharing my knowledge with others. I first discovered my passion for fluffy dogs when I adopted a Shih Tzu over 10 years ago, and I have been an avid fan ever since. Post navigation. Good overall health. What is the Maltipoo Pregnancy overview? The first heat cycle sets in as soon as the female Maltipoo reaches puberty, between months old. It is, however, not recommendable to breed a Maltipoo during her first cycle because they will not be at their full adult size. The pelvic width is not fully developed to bear pregnancy. According to the AKC regulations, the best age for a Maltipoo to get pregnant is eight months. Although the AKC regulations state otherwise, it is best for Maltipoo to get pregnant at two years old when they are in their 2nd or 3rd cycle. The Maltipoo gestation period lasts between 58 to 65 days. This dog litters two to four puppies on average. The most fertile time for a Maltipoo to get pregnant is 10 to 15 days after the onset of heat. Pregnancy Testing Pre-pregnancy testing is vital. A patella evaluation and a cardiac exam should accompany the general pregnancy examination. These tests rule out all genetic and hereditary health issues that may be present. Pseudopregnancy is a possible case. The Maltipoo may display an enlarged belly which will dissipate after weeks. Therefore, breeders should monitor the female closely and ensure that all pre-pregnancy tests have been done. It is possible to notice pregnancy signs by the beginning of the fourth week. Below are the obvious signs to look out for. Enlarged nipples— Towards the end of the second week, the nipples become larger and pop outwards. Swollen Stomach— A distended stomach is visible towards the end of the second week. Nausea— Morning sickness may occur at any time of the day. Although this is noticeable within the second week, it may carry on into the later stages of the pregnancy. Enlarged mammary glands— The mammary glands start to fill with colostrum and enlarge. This is seen within the third week of pregnancy. Change in appetite— A pregnant Maltipoo has increased appetite by the end of the third week. Behavioral changes— You will notice a behavior change as soon as the third-week sets in. The Maltipoo may become clingy or shoe nesting tendencies. Maintain regular exercise to help the Maltipoo have endurance. Limit a lot of jumping. Keep the other dogs away from the pregnant one. Do not use any pest control method unless instructed by a vet. Keep your Maltipoo within the right temperature range of .Maltipoo Birthing Issues Unlike other large breeds, Maltipoos are a miniature breed. Therefore, they are prone to some birthing issues since their pelvic canals are not wide enough to facilitate normal birth. This leads to dystocia. Other causes of dystocia in maltipoos include; oversized fetus, abnormal position of the fetus, and short uterine contractions. All Maltipoo puppies attain maturity between 11 and 13 months of age. Feeding these puppies a dry food diet high in natural ingredients will help them thrive. Regular exercise: Ensure your Maltipoo puppy gets at least 30 minutes of active play daily. Regular exercise keeps obesity and heart illness away. Regular vet visits: Make sure to take your puppies to the vet at least twice yearly for a check-up. Also, vaccinate your puppies to protect them from infections. What is the Price for Maltipoo Puppies? While Maltese poodles are not recognized by the American Kennel Club or other purebred dog kennel clubs, there are several organizations hoping to help Maltese poodles obtain recognition with the American Kennel Club by adhering to certain breeding and appearance requirements. You should remember that because the Maltese poodle is such a people-loving and affectionate pup, they can be prone to separation anxiety and may not handle long periods of separation from their families well. Maltese poodles are good with kids, thanks to their relatively gentle and calm nature. They can be playful and affectionate and easily get along with children who want to play or spend time properly petting them. They love a quick minute playtime with their toys inside or outside the home, and they require a 15 to minute walk at least twice daily to stay happy and healthy. You should also take your Maltese poodle to dog parks regularly in order to get them to socialize with other dogs in a safe, contained manner. Maltese poodles are one of the best breeds for apartment living. They may bark from time to time when hearing noises from other apartments or seeing things outside, but with proper training and care, your Maltese poodle should not cause too much noise or disruption in an apartment. Are Maltese Poodles Good Watchdogs? Maltese poodles are pretty good watchdogs; they are alert, bark at anything suspicious they see, and are fiercely loyal to their family. You can expect your Maltese poodle to bark at unfamiliar strangers or things they perceive as threats which can be helpful when you want a small dog that can alert you to potential trouble around your home. Maltese poodles may be good service dogs in certain situations. This dog is quite small, so they are not suited for mobility or guiding-related service tasks, but due to their trainable nature and constant want to help out their families, they can make good medical alert or emotional support dogs. The Maltese poodle is pretty emotionally perceptive, something that helps them relieve conditions such as anxiety and depression, and they can pick up medical alert commands easily, in addition to learning more advanced skills such as fetching medications, phones, and water. How to Care for a Maltese Poodle Caring for your Maltese poodle requires spending time with your pup exercising them, loving on them, and providing them with the nutrition they need. You should take your dog out on walks at least twice a day and spend time playing with them and their toys whenever possible. Regular visits to dog parks and walking in public can help socialize your dog, and you should always remember to stay up to date with veterinary care. Your Maltese poodle will likely need regular bathing and grooming services to keep their hair clean and free of mats. You will also need to feed your Maltese poodle two meals a day, supplemented by treats and other highly nutritional additions. You should remember not to leave your Maltese poodle home alone for long periods, as this can cause behavioral issues and upset your dog. Maltese poodles do need to be groomed. Their hair grows constantly, and since it is on the longer side, it can become matted and dirty easily. Brush your Maltese poodle several times a week, bathe them approximately once every month or so, and take them to a groomer on a regular basis to get their hair brushed out and trimmed so that it stays clear of their eyes and out of the way. Do Maltese Poodles Shed? Maltese poodles shed a small amount, but they are considered a low-shedding and more hypoallergenic dog breed. This lack of shedding is attributed to their single-layer coat that continually grows instead of shedding small hairs all over the place like a double-layered coat often does. What Should a Maltese Poodle Eat? Your Maltese poodle should eat high-quality dog food divided into two to three meals daily. Like many crossbreeds, the Maltese poodle may present health issues inherited from its parents and health issues resulting from being bred into a small-sized dog. Maltese poodles are prone to health problems such as mitral valve disease, epilepsy, progressive retinal atrophy, luxating patella, bloat, and allergies. Proper care of your Maltese poodle and regular veterinary visits can help ensure your pup stays in top shape and may help you to catch a developing health problem before it turns into something more serious or life-threatening. Maltese poodles have a life span that ranges between 10 and 13 years. In order to give your pup the longest, happiest life possible, you should be taking proper care of your dog, ensuring that regular vet visits are maintained, and keeping an eye on your Maltese poodle for potential emerging health issues. Are Maltese Poodles Expensive? Maltese poodles are considered a designer breed and can be more expensive to purchase as a result. How to Find a Maltese Poodle Breeder? To find a Maltese poodle breeder, you can perform internet searches for both local and national reputable breeders. Most of the time, you will be put on a waiting list for a puppy, and the breeder will keep you updated on when your puppy can come home. Keep in mind that you should attempt to gather as much information about the breeder, their licenses, and the conditions in which the dogs are being bred to ensure that you purchase from a breeder that properly cares for their animals. Can You Adopt a Maltese Poodle? While you can adopt a Maltese poodle from a shelter, this breed may not often turn up at local and national organizations. This is because Maltese poodles are considered designer dogs and are typically purchased directly from breeders; owners who spend money on a dog like this are unlikely to rehome them. That being said, there may be several rescue organizations dedicated to rehoming this breed when they have been given up due to unfortunate circumstances; keep an eye out on the websites of local and national organizations to see if any have Maltese poodles available for adoption. Are Maltese Poodles Purebred? Maltese poodles are not purebred dogs. They are a crossbreed, created from a mix of the Maltese dog breed and the toy poodle dog breed. Can You Show Maltese Poodles? You cannot show Maltese poodles as they are not official purebred dogs and are not recognized by the American Kennel Club. They may be recognized by specific mixed and designer breed kennel clubs; you will need to search for these organizations and see if show opportunities are available. Maltese poodles are usually a pretty good choice for new dog owners. This breed is gentle, friendly, and affectionate and is relatively low-maintenance when it comes to exercise. They love spending time with their families and are quite playful, in addition to fitting well into apartment-style living. The only things new dog owners may be overwhelmed by are the higher grooming needs of this pup and the fact that they are companion dogs, meaning they cannot be left alone for long periods. What are the stages of a Maltese pregnancy? There are various stages in a dogs pregnancy as it progresses from day 1 through to the whelping of the litter. This is a brief summary of what to expect at each week of the pregnancy: Before pregnancy : You should get pre-breeding checks done for your Maltese and get advice on the best way to improve the chances on the breeding of your Maltese. Week 1: Mating occurs and your Maltese is impregnated. This will involve fertilization of the litter. Week 3: The embryos of the puppies embed themselves into the lining of the uterus. The initial signs of pregnancy may start to show on your dog. Week 4: By the time you reach the end of week 4 you can visit the vet to get an ultrasound to confirm the pregnancy is on track. Week 5: The embryos take the form of fetus during this week. Week 6: The embryos will continue to gain in weight, skeletal and muscles will begin to form. Week 7: Hair will start to form in this week. The fetus will continue to gain weight and increase in size. Week 8: At this late stage in the pregnancy your vet may recommend an x-ray to confirm the number of puppies in the litter. Milk will also start to form in the Maltese teats. Week 9: This is the final week and whelping should occur. Keep an eye on your Maltese and keep an eye on their temperature as this is a good sign the birth is about to happen. Whelping : This is when the puppies are born. Ensure that you are ready for puppies and consult your vet for any specific advice around your Maltese pregnancy. Post birth: Keep the mother and the litter away from the father for a while as it is in their best interests. Make sure the vet checks the mother to ensure she has recovered from the births. Keep the puppies warm and safe and can an eye on the mothers condition to ensure all is going ok in the days after whelping. When is the female Maltese most fertile in the heat cycle? A Maltese female will be the most likely to get pregnant in the second week of being on heat. The exact best time is usually between 10 days and 15 days of her heat cycle. How do I know my female Maltese is pregnant? How do you know your Maltese is pregnant? If you suspect your Maltese is pregnant or you are trying to breed your Maltese you can wait 2 weeks to 4 weeks and the obvious signed will start to show. These obvious signs will include a swollen belly and swollen nipples. They may also have Nausea and you may notice behavioral changes. If you want to know earlier than waiting for the obvious signs then from Day 22 you can use a blood test to determine if the Maltese is pregnant. By week 4 a palpation and ultrasound test can confirm the pregnancy. At Week 7 an x-ray can confirm the litter and confirm the number of puppies to be born. If you have any concerns, or the pregnancy was unplanned, then you should consult a vet to get an overall check done and confirm the Maltese is able to mother a litter. The vet will be able to give you good advice on what is going to happen, whether your Maltese is in a good condition to deliver the puppies and some tips on caring for your dog both during and post pregnancy. What is pre-breeding testing for a dog pregnancy? If you are intending to breed your Maltese then there are a few checks you can perform to ensure that there is no genetic diseases or predispositions that will be passed onto the pups. Pre-breeding testing will help ensure that the puppies produced by breeding will be fit, healthy and have the best chance of life. The checks will best be determined by your vet but a few things they will consider is the weight of the dog, the pelvic width and blood samples. The blood samples identify any infections and any high concentration on minerals which may affect the pregnancy such as calcium. The vet may also want to do a fecal exam to look for intestinal worms. Also your vet will ensure that all vaccinations are up to date. If you are labelled as a top breeder you may want to get official certifications for the dog include eye, hip and specific breed certifications. Your vet can arrange these for you. There are also other tests which can be done to ensure there are no bacterial infections such as brucellosis which can cause still births and infertility. These checks are worthwhile so that your dog is in a good condition to give pregnancy and since breeding can be an expensive hobby it will also lessen the chance of the litter having issues which means you will not be able to sell your puppies. Also note if you are thinking of breeding you should know the laws in your city, state and country about what certifications, registrations and checks you need to go through before being able to sell the puppies. These can be extensive in some areas and are there to stop random breeding which results in lots of puppies being given up to the dog shelter and having to be put down. Be responsible and do your checks before breeding your Maltese. What is a false Maltese pregnancy? A false pregnancy is when the body reacts as if the female Maltese is actually carrying a litter even though she is not pregnant. This will result in common pregnancy signs such as a swollen belly but they will disappear by around week 3 of the false pregnancy. A false pregnancy is also known as a pseudo pregnancy. How long does a Maltese Pregnancy last? The length of a Maltese pregnancy is the same as other small dog breeds which means the Maltese is pregnant for approximately 8 to 10 weeks. From 8 weeks the Maltese litter could be delivered at anytime. A vet will become concerned with a prolonged Maltese pregnancy after 10 weeks. What is the Youngest Age a Maltese can get Pregnant? Technically a Maltese can get pregnant as soon as they have their first heat cycle. This generally will come in the age of 4 months to 8 months which is an extremely young age. It is not recommended for a Maltese to get pregnant in their first heat cycle as their body has not developed properly and it is dangerous at this age. Breeding at this age has many complications and reputable breeders will always warn against allowing a Maltese getting pregnant during their first cycle. The main reasons this age is not recommended is that the Maltese is still a small puppy itself and its body, especially its pelvic region, has not developed into full size. Another reason is that the eggs in such a young dog are not always of the best quality and will not produce the best offspring. The last reason is that a pregnancy is a traumatic event and it can have an affect on the Maltese puppies mental state as they are still puppies themselves. What is the recommended age for breeding a Maltese? While the youngest age a Maltese can get pregnant is the first heat cycle, it is usually advisable to wait for at least the second and preferably the third heat cycle before breeding a Maltese. It is safer to extended this another cycle which may be in the 24 — 30 month old range. A Maltese dog who has gone through a couple of heat cycles and has fully formed their body is much better placed to have a successful pregnancy. What is the oldest age that a Maltese can get Pregnant? As long as a Maltese is in heat it can get pregnant. As a dog gets older the length of time between heat cycles may increase but they never stop. Technically your Maltese could get pregnant at any age but there are more complications and serious risks as the Maltese ages into a senior dog. If you have a Maltese that is getting on in age and are considering whether they should be breed there are a few things to take into consideration. These include that most vets suggest that 8 years is the oldest age to breed a puppy. Some kennels will not register litters from any female which is older than 8 years of age. In fact many vets will suggest you should retire a dog from being impregnated at the age of five. It is also noted by vets that smaller breeds should be removed from breeding at a younger age than larger dogs due to the stresses it puts on the female Maltese body. Vets recommend small breeds to only breed up to the age of five. A final thought is that most kennels and vets recommend that a female Maltese not produce more than 4 litters. If the dog had been bred from the age of two then it would be around the age of five when the dog has reached the accepted maximum number of litters. What is the best time to breed a Maltese? A Maltese female dog will be the most fertile between 10 days and 15 days which is approximately the second week of her heat cycle. But a Maltese dog can become pregnant at anytime in the heat cycle. How many puppies are in a Maltese litter? How many puppies can a Maltese have? The average size of a Maltese litter is between two and five puppies. This is the average sizes but the litter can be only one puppy or even more than six puppies. It depends on nature and how fertile the female Maltese is at the time of impregnation. Most pregnancies will ave at least 3 puppies. As the litters get bigger there is a chance for more complications with the pregnancy and with the puppies as they will have to fight for nourishment in order to grow and thrive in the world. What preparation activities should be taken breeding a Maltese? Before you intend to breed your Maltese you should see a vet and get a few pre-pregnancy tests done. These will differ per breed but for a Maltese this will include checking the pelvic width, testing the heart and also having a patella evaluation. Your Vet may recommend blood tests and talk to you about diets which can help with improving the chance of the pregnancy being successful. The American Kennel Club has a set of recommended tests which should be done for each certified breed. What changes occur to my female Maltese during pregnancy? During a Maltese pregnancy your dog will gain about one fifth of their body weight. This will be a gradual gain over the pregnancy but you will start to see the gains by week 2 of the pregnancy. The signs in the second week are generally just starting to develop but by the time the pregnancy has moved through to week 4 there should be a very noticeable weight gain. Other changes which can occur during the pregnancy include the Maltese nipples becoming larger and will start to pop out from the skin. This is obviously so she is ready to feed the Maltese litter when it is born. The nipples will start to change by week 3 of the pregnancy. Also just like human pregnancies the Maltese pregnancy can have nausea and vomiting. This can be brought on by certain smells, foods or times of the day. The nausea will present itself in week 3 of the pregnancy and will generally disappear as the pregnancy continues. It is not unheard of though of dogs have nausea through the pregnancy. Appetite changes are likely to occur around the third week. Other behavioral changes can also occur as the pregnancy progresses. Nesting is one of these signs and your Maltese will gather up toys and food and keep them in her spot. Some dogs do react differently in a pregnancy so make sure you notice if your Maltese is becoming clingy and attached to your side or if she wants to be by herself in a corner. If she wants to be by her side you should encourage it to reduce the stress on your Maltese during this important time. There are some studies that show that stress during pregnancies can make the offspring less likely to handle stress in their life. For these reasons you want to try and provide a stress free environment while your Maltese is pregnant with her litter. There are quite a few things you can do during the pregnancy to help your Maltese have an easier time: Ensure that you keep up regular exercise although make sure you take into consideration how your dog is handling it. They will help maintain the muscle definition and allow her to have the endurance when she is whelping. Try to limit any sort of jumping your Maltese needs to do. There are a variety of products that can help with this during the pregnancy such as pet steps and ramps. Check them out as limiting jumping will stop the strain on your Maltese body considering the additional weight she will be carrying with her litter. Limit calcium intake during the pregnancy. A high calcium intake during pregnancy has been connected with eclampsia and difficult labor. It can also cause abnormalities in the puppies. Towards the end of the pregnancy, as you approach the whelping, your vet may suggest to increase the calcium. Only do this on your vets advice and your vet will only recommend this after week 6. Your vet will only recommend this if there is a need to increase the calcium in your Maltese. There are a few options to increase calcium but most people find cheese such as cottage cheese an easy choice which the Maltese will like. But it should be stressed calcium early in the pregnancy and without vets advice is a very dangerous thing to do. Calcium after the birth may be suggested to prevent eclampsia. Check with your vet on any medications or treatments you give your Maltese. This includes flea and tick treatments, as well as shampoos and soaps. Your vet can guide you on the best alternatives during the pregnancy to ensure a safe pregnancy for your Maltese. Diets during pregnancy can help with certain aspects of the pregnancy so talk to your vet to get their recommendation. Generally the food later in the pregnancy from about week 4 should be high in fat. This can be easily given by steering towards the puppy foods but your vet will have a good recommendation on the best food for your pregnant Maltese dog. Maltese pregnancies can bring on nesting characteristics in your puppy. If your Maltese does not have a safe place that is hers such as a nice warm bed to herself then it would be a great idea to get something for her. She might like a warm blanket as well if it is cold. Relationships with other dogs can sometimes be a problem during the pregnancy as the Maltese will not feel comfortable and have less tolerance levels. You should try and keep your pregnant female Maltese by herself if she is annoyed by the other dogs in the house. If the sire is also in the house you should keep the mother and father away from each other from week 5. The father or sire should be kept away from the actual pregnancy and the puppies until they have grown significantly. This is usually around week 4 after the pregnancy but may be longer if needed. You should be careful reintroducing the puppies and sire and do it through a fence, and on a leash to gauge the reaction from both the father, mother and Maltese puppies. How do I know my Maltese is ready to give birth? You Maltese pregnancy is coming to an end when her body temperature starts to drop. This temperature drop is a clear sign the female Maltese body is preparing itself for the delivery. Starting around Day 57 of the pregnancy, the temperature should be taken daily. Twice daily is recommended after you progress past day .The normal temperature for a Maltese is to degrees Fahrenheit which is equivalent to .When the pregnancy is within 24 hours of happening this temperature will drop top degrees Fahrenheit which is equivalent to .It might only be 1 to 3 degrees Fahrenheit but this is the clearest sign your dog is ready to give birth. Another less obvious sign of an impending birth is that the milk will start to fill the teats of your Maltese. This means the birth is likely to happen within a few days as the body of the female is getting ready to take care of the soon to arrive Maltese puppies. What are the Best Tips for Looking after a female Maltese after the pregnancy post pregnancy? Once your Maltese has given birth there are a number of things you can do that will help her post pregnancy: Remove any soiled bedding and blankets. These will have bodily fluids from the birth and allowing your Maltese puppies and Maltese mother to sit in the fluids will increase the likeliness of an infection occurring. Use a warm damp towel to clean off the mother. Use a dry towel to gently pat her dry to make her comfortable. Removing the body fluids from her will lessen the chance of any infections occurring. Provide lots of water in the next few days as your Maltese will be producing milk to feed her puppies. She can get hydrated without adequate access to clean water. The mother may ignore food for a day or two but after that she should be eating. Ensure that you feed her adequately as she is providing the nutrients for the litter. She will need larger than normal meals. If she rejects her food beyond a couple of days get vet advice. Take your Maltese and her puppies to the vet for a checkup. The vet will be able to confirm the mother is healing well and that the puppies are all healthy. For a couple of weeks keep an eye on the drainage of your Maltese. The teats of your dog can get infected and inflamed. This is commonly known as Mastitis. It occurs whenever bacteria gets into an cracks in the skin near the teat due to feeding. This can be very painful so if it occurs see your vet immediately. Talk to your vet about eclampsia and how to prevent it as its a common in small breeds. Eclampsia is especially common in smaller breeds such as Maltese so be very careful. While calcium during the pregnancy was not advised eclampsia is a condition where your Maltese is not getting enough calcium. Symptoms include disorientation, not nurturing the puppies, fever, whining, panting, walking funny and laying with straight legs. If any of these symptoms occur in the weeks following your litter arrival while the mother is feeding them then take it very seriously. Is there anything cuter than newborn Maltese puppies? We think not, either. How many litters can a Maltese have? Since the whole point of breeding is to do it responsibly without ever putting the Maltese mama at risk, most breeders will allow a Maltese to have litters at the most. Other breeders use age as their indicator and will retire her from breeding around age 8. Part of responsible breeding , however, is to adjust your schedule to her needs, as shown by her but also a vet or another experienced professional. Not only is it dangerous to the health and longevity of the mama, but breeding a physically exhausted Maltese can also put the puppies at-risk. Another detail is that retirement age either goes by age or litter size, but these two things are not directly connected. How many times a year can a Maltese have puppies? Maltese mamas get pregnant when a stud male Maltese impregnates them during the proper stage of her heat cycle more on that in a bit. Since a Maltese goes into heat twice a year, this means that she can have puppies up to twice a year. That being said, she should not have puppies that often. You should normally space out her pregnancies to be at least 1. Maltese are toy dog breeds and their size in combination with the number of puppies expected in a litter can often put them at risk of complications. These include health issues and body stress. The more litters she has, and the closer together they are, the more at-risk of issues she becomes. At what age do Maltese go into heat? You may be delighted to learn that Maltese, along with many other dog breeds, reach their sexual maturity at the age of 4 months old, though they typically have their first heat at about 1 year of age. That means that she can enjoy her first pregnancy then, right? Wrong, unfortunately. Even if she has her first heat cycle right at the 4-month mark, you should never pair her with a stud during that time. She should get at least 2 heat cycles under her belt before you considering her a mating option. How long does a Maltese heat cycle last? This is marked by a bit of bloody discharge. Estrus This day stage is where the breeding will take place. Anestrus In normal cases, this is the third stage. In this one, her body will return to normal for months before her next heat cycle starts. Luteal phase Technically overlapping with other stages, this stage is when she actually gets pregnant. The egg is released and that meets with the sperm that comes from the stud during mounting sessions. This stage, along with the pregnancy lasts months until birth. Her body is still developing right up until she is about a year or two years old. As mentioned, a pregnancy in and of itself is taxing for a toy breed like a Maltese, and this is made even stronger if she is not full-grown. This puts her and her pups at risk if she were to get pregnant and attempt to deliver the puppies naturally rather than a c-section or other medical intervention. As well, the younger and smaller she is, the more strain it puts on her body. This could lead to puppy injury or death as well as even a lost pregnancy. The younger she is, the less infertile she is. If she does get pregnant successfully at a young age, she will most likely have a smaller litter with smaller puppies as well. Maltese pregnancy signs to watch for Excited for your Maltese to become a mom? These include physical signs such as the swelling of her nipples or breasts as well as weight gain that is out of character. They also could include attitude changes such as an increased appetite and even acting protective of herself around other animals, or protective of her favorite nesting spot. In reality, it was just a false pregnancy! This is part of why making sure that the stud mounts her several times during the right stage is so important. IT happens in humans, too, after all. Never punish her for this. How long is a Maltese pregnancy? Pregnancy lasts about weeks or 60 days in most cases for Maltese moms. Anything that goes beyond 65 days should get a check from the vet to make extra sure that everything is going according to plan! These factors can include genetics from her parents, but also things like her size and age and even just her individual needs as a dog. The only thing cuter than your Maltese is Maltese puppies! This guide will help you know what to expect if your Maltese mama is about to deliver a litter for herself.
He is amazing. He is calm yet playful, affectionate, and a total love. Literally nothing phases him. He has been exposed to thunder, fire works, loud mechanical noises, vacuums right up to his crate, umbrellas, and all of the other things people find puppies dislike with no issues. He barked inside of the house for the first time ever two days ago, and it looks like he did so because we had a fox skulking around the house. He prefers to be with us all the time, but has no problem going into his crate when we need him to do so. He is quiet as a mouse from the time we crate him at night until we get him out in the morning typically between pm and 6 am. Training has gone very easily. He has occasional stubborn moments, but for the most part, unless we are working on something brand new or really difficult, we do not need to treat with food any longer as he is extremely responsive to praise and petting. He could not get over how smart and gentle Brady is. Brady is very social, both with people and with other dogs. He goes to puppy play group two days a week and his tail starts wagging the moment the van pulls up at the house to take him there. The biggest training challenges we have had with him came from his desire to meet and greet every person and dog he sees. The last big basic thing that we continue to need to work on is jumping up on new people. If we know someone new is coming to the house, we keep a leash on him and he is getting much better about not jumping. I would say he is 90 percent there. He walks beautifully on a leash until we are about fifty feet from returning to our house, then he gets the zoomies and either pulls or tries to grab the leash. We generally stop and put him into sit, down for few seconds, then resume the walk. Normally we only have to do that once. He is still a puppy, though, as you can see from his morning routine which I have in the video below! Catharines, on with Jamie and Billy. He is a mini bernedoodle from Sheena and Pickle .He is about 50lbs but thinks he is a 5lb lap dog. He has a wavy coat. Some words we would use to describe motley are affectionate, happy, goofy, friendly, smart, easy going and lazy. He is very laid back. He loves to sleep in and relax but will run around and play when the time is right. The cottage in the summer is his happy place where he will run around and swim and play like crazy. He loves to go for boat cruises. He is super smart, was very easy to train and has always been a huge love bug. He loves to snuggle. Almost every morning when our alarm goes off he knows he can come into bed so he will quietly come into our room and put his paws up and wait for a boost. He has the most expressive human like eyes that completely make my heart melt. Motley has been coming to work with me since he was 9 weeks old which has made him extremely social with people of all ages, shapes and sizes. He loves everyone and is not shy to lean on a stranger or sit on their feet. He is our office greeter and official mascot. Every person that comes into the office or meets him absolutely adores him. He is literally a celebrity around my office and in our neighborhood. When we are out and about we get stopped constantly with people wondering what kind of a dog he is and then commenting on how awesome he is. Because of his laid back nature and incredible social skills we decided he would make the perfect therapy dog. He passed his CGN test in April and has proved himself to be an amazing therapy dog on the few visits we have been on so far. Motley is our first dog and we could not imagine life without him! Sherry picked the perfect puppy to fit our family. Please feel free to email me if you have any questions. She has captured our hearts, to the point where we are wondering why we waited so long to adopt a dog. She is the first dog for both of us. Waldo is a sweet, loving, mischievous, and funny little dog. Always wakes up with bounds of energy and so happy to see us. Whenever we take her anywhere, people always stop to pet her and ask what type of dog she is and gush about how gorgeous she is! I had my heart set on a puppy just like the one I saw in the picture. I stalked the SwissRidge website day after day. I will never forget the day Sherry called me out of the blue. We needed this black standard bernedoodle with a white cross on his chest, and a tan swirl over his eyes! From that day on, we knew this pup we named Raglan was going to be a wonderful addition to our growing family. He was an adorable pup, full of energy, dedication, and spunk. We loved him so much that we knew we had room for another. Our youngest daughter wanted a doodle she could bond with, something smaller, so the following Christmas Santa left a dog crate filled with toys with a note saying we were on the list for a mini bernedoodle. Sula was born the next month and our pack was growing! Sula added a new energy to our pack. She was a playful pup who tested any and all limits she was given. With the help of a local trainer, and a quick education in being the leader of my pack, Raglan and Sula were a dream come true. Now that we had mini and a standard bernedoodle, my love for SwissRidge doodles continued to grow, I hinted around that one more pup would complete our pack. A tiny bernedoodle would make our family complete. I never considered myself to be a small dog person, but there was something about these tiny pups that turned me around. My husband must be as crazy as I am because he contacted Sherry on his own and wanted to surprise me with my third benedoodle for my birthday! Raglan, was from the litter of Chantelle, an Apricot standard poodle, and Dominique, a handsome bernese mountain dog. Raglan is a wonderful pup but he did take sometime and effort to get him that way. Even though I read the books and studied the puppy handbook, I still made some mistakes. Luckily with the support of of a great trainer, I realized what I was doing wrong. Raglan is a wonderful companion and family member. He walks down the street like he is a Clydesdale horse and if one of his pack members breaks away from the pack he does not stand down until they return. He is loyal, loving, and with his long legged stature and winning personality he is the best of all worlds. Raglan will be four in June .Sula is a mini doodle from Juno, a bernese mountain dog, and Eddie, a poodle, born January 2, .She is a total love and attention hound. Throughout my day I always have the feeling that sometimes I am being watched. If I leave the house she will assume her position in the front bay window and wait for my return. Sula loves everything and everyone. She always wants to know what is going on. Whether you are driving a car, sitting on the couch, or yes even sitting at the kitchen counter, Sula is right by your side. She is very vocal and opinionated and will express her opinion any chance she gets! We only wish we knew what she was trying to say. Gibbs, is a tiny bernedoodle from the litter of Kia and Pickles born May 24, .He is as smart as he is adorable. Never having a small dog before Gibbs weighs 15 pounds at 11 months we decided to fly from Boston to California with Gibbs in a carry on bag not knowing what to expect. With a five hour flight ahead of us, we were prepared for anything and everything! Gibbs was unbelievable! I was truly amazed at how well he adjust to this new adventure. We knew Sherry was special the first time we emailed her. We knew she and her pups were worth every penny we would spend on them. Once you make the commitment to Sherry and her pups you will never look back, or wonder if you made the right choice. And then, when you hold your precious treasure in your arms for the very first time, you will not be able to control that warm and fuzzy feeling that will run through your entire body. The testing, the care, the follow through, and most importantly her love for her job are just some of the reasons why Sherry Rupke is the very best Breeder of the Pack. Murphy Uli Meet Uli. She is owned by the Cook family. Her parents are Molly and Pickle. She is a mini a f1b bernedoodle that weighs 20 pounds at 21 weeks. Her final weight should be in the high 30lbs range. I had no idea that a hybrid existed. My interest was peaked with the Bernedoodle, but there was the initial sticker shock for a pup. I tried to find a breeder in the US. Our family was in love with the Bernedoodle. I inquired with every US breeder that I could find. Not one was successfully breeding medium sized dogs. My search returned me to Swiss Ridge Kennels. I was drawn to the effort that Sherry puts into selecting the breeding pair. The US breeders that I had spoken with seemed to lack this forethought. My impression of their process was this: I have a beautiful, affectionate Bernese female and am rolling the dice with a male poodle — he seems like a great guy. I hope the mating is successful and I will analyze the puppies genetics and temperaments to determine if I am following the right breeding path. Granted, all hybrid breeders do this, and it is an art, but Sherry seems to take a more scientific approach before the mating occurs. And I figured, well if the Goldendoodle breeders have been doing it for years and years, then I will trust this stranger in Canada. After excellent breeding, and a lot of worrying on my part, Molly had her puppies. After fantastic early puppy care, Sherry selected a spirited female for us. Uli is a perfect fit for our active and loudish family. She arrived on her 8th week birthday and shipped from Ontario to Denver. The arrival day was very long for Uli, but you could not tell. The paper in her kennel was dry. When I do it again, I will fly to Sherry and bring the pup home in-cabin. All of the above breeding attributes were evident when we held Uli for the first time. Training is beyond easy. Uli loves to learn and please. Potty training was shockingly a breeze. Uli has the perfect combination of Berner and Poodle traits. She immediately adapted to each family member in a unique way. She must be a dog genius and is the perfect amount of spunk. She does not shed — not a trait that I thought I needed but a definite surprise, and now a requirement. Uli loves everyone that she meets, especially young kids. She believes every dog that she meets should play. Uli will play all day long but settles immediately when in her crate, on the couch or on the bed. The kids love how excited Uli is to see them after school, and you can hardly see her wagging tail. She has the most beautiful multicolored coat and white tipped, black tail. She loves to cuddle. Thank You Sherry!! They are both owned by the Hutchins famiy. But alas, Finley is too quick for little Beckett. As the weeks pass and Beckett matures, the distance between them in their cat-and-mouse game lessens. In a matter of time, Beckett will have Finley by the tail, matching her step by step. They bring so much laughter, joy, fun and lightheartedness to our everyday life. He is owned by the Fairman family. He has a great temperament and if you can believe it a great sense of humour. He is very intelligent which is both a plus and a minus. On the plus side he was basically house trained from the time he walked in the door. We have to think very hard to remember him having an accident in the house. He was very easy to train. In each of the 3 or 4 training classes we attended he was always in the running for the best dog in the class. On the negative side if you are not consistent and develop your role as the leader of the pack you will quickly find that he starts training you. We have never had any issues of aggression towards humans or other animals since we have had him. In fact he at times can be overly friendly and become over excited when greating someone new. He is definitely a conversation piece. We have not met a person yet who in not immediately smitten by him and wants to take him home. We were in Hilton Head last March and walking the beach or in town we were constantly stopped by everyone wanting to pat him and find out more about him. Sherry at Swiss Ridge is great. If you take the time to fill out your questionnaire completely and honestly she is very good at matching you with a pup that matches your family. I asked if she could provide me with a mini that would be close to 50lbs. Bernie at his last check up weighed in at 50lbs. As stated prior his is the perfect dog for our family and our stage in life. Sherry has always been there to answer any questions we have had in a timely manner and has always been very supportitive. As much as I feel my opinion is biased over the summer Swiss Ridge held its first annual Doodle Romp. Over 80 owners from all over North America attended. It was at this event that I realized that Bernie was not the exception but the norm when it came to Swiss Ridge Doodles. Both the owners and dogs seemed cut from the same cloth. With over 80 dogs engaging in various forms of free play and interacting with a large number of humans there were not any issues of aggressiveness or inappropriate behaviour that I witnessed. Swiss Ridge owners are very special and dedicated to the breed as witnessed by the Swiss ridge group on face book. Here you find owners who share their good times the rough spots and very good advice and support. Some tips I can give are 1- find a good training book and enroll your pup in puppy classes and others as needed. As stated the doodles are very smart dogs who are easily trained but you need to know how and be consistent to establish you and your family are the pack leaders. Because dogs are pack animals when you bring your pup home crate him in your bedroom at night. They want to be part of the pack. This was something we came to understand by accident and had reconfirmed in talking with other and reading training materials. You can not go wrong with a doodle especially one from Swiss Ridge!! Sherry does a great job providing well mannered healthy pups that meet the needs of their owners. As soon as we can convince my wife Bernie need a sibling for company I will be in line for a standard doodle. Good luck feel free to ask if you have any further questions. So below we have created a list of questions you should ask the breeder. A loving forever home with a secure fence and another dog in the home She wants to be your "All-American Girl! Carrie Underwood is so sweet and adorable. She is a bundle of tender kisses and has energy for days. She has been a great sister to the newest foster puppies that have come and gone, teaching them the art of playing with toys. Carrie's favorite thing to do is play chase with her K9 buddies. She runs fast and does figure 8's around the resident dogs, who don't even try to keep up with her. Her second favorite activity is napping with the resident Labs. She adores the older resident dogs and has learned great napping skills from them. She continues to work on her leash skills. Carrie has been quietly working on coming out of her shell and has undergone a transformation since arriving at her foster. She loves to curl up in the lap of her FM for naps and bedtime snuggles. She still has her moments of shyness around Foster Dad, but will now come voluntarily to the couch to sit beside him for attention. She's definitely gained lots of confidence. Carrie will need a home with another dog, preferably one who enjoys the same activity level. Carrie still has some shy moments but she is ready for her furever home, and she will steal the heart of anyone who wants to add a sweet yet energetic member to their family. Thank you to the following generous donors currently supporting Carrie's care: Amanda S. Daisy and Brock are a beautiful mother and son pair who love to snuggle together and cuddle. They are both sweet, happy, and friendly. They adore getting attention from anyone they meet during their walks and easily draw people in with their sunny personalities and soft silky coats. They have settled into an easy routine in their foster home and relish their walks every day and visits to the dog park. During their walks Brock clocks roughly twice the mileage of foster mom and Daisy with his side-to-side walking style. Neither is true! These pups love to live it up at the dog park where they show off their speed as Brock sprints and dives after his Kong frisbee, often grabbing it taco style, while Daisy relishes fetching an orange Chuck-It ball before eventually resting to chew on it. Brock is also a master at tug-of-war who has learned to drop it sometimes after repeated requests so it can be thrown again. Brock is extra special because he was born without a tail, which causes him to be incontinent. Inside the house he wears diapers and a belly band, and his incontinence is easily managed. When coming inside from a walk, Brock waits patiently for his diaper to be put on. Daisy and Brock took time to smell the roses and ponder life. While happy to be in a foster home, they would love to find their forever home. Please open your mind and your heart to considering adopting these two gorgeous pups. You will never regret your decision. Buying a dog from a breeder is going to be exponentially more expensive than adopting from a shelter. Adoption Duration From Application to Purchase Adopting from non-profit, volunteer-run rescues can take anywhere from a week to a month. They might do a phone interview and a house visit before you ever meet the dog. Since the dogs live with foster families, you have to wait until the foster has time to meet with you. If they approve, you can give them the final adoption contract and the adoption fee and take your new pet home. Give your dog the time and space to explore the house and familiarize themselves. Make sure you have the food they like, give them plenty of water, and have treats to reward their good behavior. This structure will help them feel more comfortable in your house. Breeder Mill Red Flags Do your research before buying from a breeder. Some people are just out to make a profit. They want to bring the dog to you instead of letting you see where the dog grew up. This designer breed was developed in the s with the goal of creating a small, low-shedding companion breed. It is one of the most popular designer breeds in Australia and is becoming more and more popular in the United States and other countries. Mal-Shis are known for having an outgoing, playful personality and a sweet disposition. Due to their gentle nature and social personality, they make great companions as well as therapy dogs. A Mal-Shi tends to be bold and outgoing with an open and friendly personality. They tend to be interested in making friends with everyone, especially if that means they get some love, attention, and playtime. This means that they tend to get along well with other pets, dogs, strangers, and children. Due to their small size, the Mal-Shi can be easily injured by accidental falls or rough play, so any playtime with younger children should be closely supervised. Mal-Shis are wonderful family dogs. They are naturally affectionate, loving, and devoted to their owner. They are alert, which makes them excellent watchdogs. They also tend to be open and friendly, so although they may alert you to someone or something coming to the house, they will be more interested in making friends than being a guard dog. This is a highly adaptable dog breed. Mal-Shis are a good fit for apartment living as well as larger homes. They also do well in most climates. You will have to keep an eye on them in warmer weather as they can easily overexert themselves. In colder weather, you will likely need to add some layers to help your Mal-Shi stay warm. This dog is a true companion animal and loves to be with their family; this means they do not like to be alone for long periods and can be prone to separation anxiety. Since the Mal-Shi is a mixed breed, it can inherit health issues common to one or both of the parent breeds. Some common health issues to be aware of in your Mal-Shi include respiratory problems, White Shaker Syndrome, and patellar luxation. Asking the breeder about the genetic history of the parents and to see any relevant health clearances can help allay potential health concerns. This dog breed is intelligent and happy to be with their owners, which also makes them eager to please. They are a highly trainable dog breed that is a good fit for owners of every experience level. Mal-Shis will tend to pick up on basic commands relatively easily and will enjoy learning more advanced tricks in ongoing training. However, they can have a stubborn streak, but consistent training will help. Because of their outgoing and social personality, the Mal-Shi also tends to have a sensitive soul. Harsh scolding or tones will hurt their feelings and could make them withdrawn or more stubborn. They respond best to ongoing training that is interesting, consistent, and positive. Housetraining can be difficult with this small dog breed, so you will want to introduce crate training early. Also, small dogs have small bladders, so your Mal-Shi will need to take more trips outside, especially as a puppy. Crate training and consistent routines can help with housetraining. Because they are so small, it can be tempting to baby your Mal-Shi. Of course, you want to treat your dog well and reward them for good behavior, but too much babying can result in your Mal-Shi acting more like a spoiled brat than the attentive, loving, and affectionate dog they usually are. Common coat colors vary and can be any combination of white, black, brown, or tan. Although a Mal-Shi is often low-shedding, you will still need to brush their coat every day to remove tangles and prevent matting. If you choose to keep their coat clipped short, you can likely get away with brushing every couple of days. In addition to coat care, your Mal-Shi will have plenty of other grooming needs as would any dog. Trimming their nails monthly, or sooner if needed, keeps their nails from growing too long and affecting their ability to move around comfortably. Checking their ears regularly and cleaning them carefully as needed can help prevent ear infections caused by trapped moisture, dirt, or debris. Good dental care for dogs , like brushing teeth, using enzyme toothpaste, or dental chews daily, can help prevent the tartar buildup that causes gum disease and tooth decay. The Mal-Shi is a dog breed with a moderate activity level. A few walks a day plus some playtime will keep this dog breed happy and healthy. They also tend to love the outdoors and will match their energy level to yours. So, if you want to be more relaxed, your Mal-Shi will relax with you, especially if it means more cuddles and time with you. If you want to be more active, your Mal-Shi will keep up and will be more than happy to be with you. Because of their small size, they can get tired quickly and may overexert themselves trying to keep up with you. So, keep an eye on them and take a break or go home if you see them start to pant heavily or struggle. Fully-grown Mal-Shis usually stand about 10 inches tall at the shoulder and weigh between 6 and 12 pounds. A Mal-Shi will typically live 12 — 14 years. Because Poodle or Doodle hybrids are so popular, the Mal-Shi is one of the few designer breeds whose parentage does not include a Poodle. Mal-Shi Puppies for Sale.

The sad truth is that many pet store purchased pups actually come from puppy mills. Basically, there is zero authenticity with pet stores. When it comes to adopting any animal from a pet store, there is an increased risk of unforeseen health or genetic problems. You also cultivate a life-long relationship with the breeder, meaning support is available to you anytime you may need it. With My Golden Retriever Puppies , you have the option to come and visit both the puppy and the breeder in person! Golden Retrievers are an adaptable breed, meaning they are better at adapting to seasonal changes and various types of climate than certain other breeds. Goldens sport a double-coat, which ensures that these sweet pups are able to tolerate slightly colder temperatures than their friends from other breeds. Your pup deserves better than that, which is why here at My Golden Retriever Puppies , we ensure high-quality care is taken of your pet at all times. We even have all types of golden retrievers for sale! At My Golden Retriever Puppies, we pride ourselves on our golden retriever price being fair and affordable for high quality puppies. Here at My Golden Retriever Puppies , we value family and authenticity, which is why we always guarantee our pups through our 2-year genetic health guarantee. Like adopting a Golden Retriever from a pet store, there is an increased risk when adopting a pup from a rescue center or shelter as well. For example, pups purchased through a shelter or rescue center are far less likely to come with the kinds of health guarantees and reassurances that a breeder can provide.
