The corrections he taught us were very simple and two days later Nala is having no issues with understanding what we are trying to communicate to her, thus making her training that much more effective. She was very professional and included the kids into the session. We noticed a huge difference in our 1 year old Siberian husky max with door control, lead control and lots more. With Marley our 10 week old Siberian husky, we started teaching her to use a lead and walk. She also learnt recall and taught how to tell her off properly. He has stranger anxiety and barks to demand attention from his humans. When he knows you he jumps up on you. If he doesn't know you he cowers away in apprehension and fear. He really needs guidance from his humans to feel secure. At our first lesson he responded really well and his humans told me that when guests came that evening they were able to prevent his jumping up and drop his demanding barking. Well done already! Peter walked in and immediately had all of the dog's calm no aggression within a minute even my male pom Geordie who is extremely aggressive with strangers stopped barking and growling we were speechless it's the only time in 5 years that this has happened. Rex was mouthing and play biting me quite badly he has completely stopped since Peter's visit. Peter came into our lives and taught us how to communicate with our fur babies the dog's now interact with each other in a calm relaxed way and are not aggressive towards Rex he is very respectful of their size all 4 now obey immediately it's magic. Peter also advised us to consider a change to their diet and feeding routine to help me with the aggression around meal times this has worked wonders and 2 of the dog's who were over weight have now started to slim down and are more active and healthy. As a puppy, Cooper would tend to get over-excited and clobber her buddies canine and human. While she has always been "friendly," we worried that she wasn't able to read social cues from other dogs and exhibit enough inhibition to keep her from being a pest. Having weekly practice with dogs while under knowledgeable supervision has been fabulous for us. The trainers at DANW are able to step in and guide Coop so that play stays fun for everyone and she is increasingly able to self-regulate and play or just co-exist happily with a variety of dogs. I was very nervous to trust someone with our fur baby, not only just for a day adventure, but for adventure boarding as well. Mindy Cook has been fantastic with our boy, and he absolutely loves her! Our dog is a one year old Golden Retriever that is full of energy. He goes on a weekly adventure with Mindy, and comes home a very happy and sleepy boy! She always works with him on the adventure no jumping, recall, etc. It is great socialization for our young boy. We also had our dog adventure board with Mindy and her family. Her trainers, Verena and Fernando, are wonderful with our high energy puppy, Winnow. The opportunity to swim, run, fetch, and play with her dog pack is one of the highlights of her week. She has had weekly adventures for months, with plans to continue indefinitely. Her recall has improved noticeably since working with Verena and Fernando. The convenience of having Winnow picked up and dropped off, safely and reliably, is a huge plus. To top it off, we get helpful, regular feedback from Winnow's trainers after every session. We feel that it is money well spent on the training, exercise, and fun for our very active pup. I have a young, active, small lbs dog who needs a lot of cardio. As an alternative to doggy day care, my dog trainer recommended Dog Adventures Northwest's adventures as a means to tire her out in a consistently positive environment. I was transparent about my dog's past reactivity meeting new dogs and they listened and worked with us. I was so happy to not feel crazy when describing my dog's past issues. Right away, Verena was very understanding. This company can run pretty small and consistent dog groups, which was perfect for us. Their communication, billing, and scheduling system is great. Overall, my dog is exhausted after her outing and acts ready to party whenever she gets picked up. Highly recommend for exercise and building positive and well-supervised social play! I have had a couple of last minute trips and she has always had me covered and gotten us the best trainers to take care of our two dogs. John has been our primary pet sitter and sole outdoor adventurer for our guys. He is awesome! When he shows up at the door, our dogs are ecstatic.When we go on trips, he stays in regular communication with us and gives us regular updates and sends tons of pics. He even spoils them with fun adventures to the dog park. We know our dogs are in good hands. Recently, Samuel has done a couple of pet sitting stays for us and we were extremely impressed. He took our dogs on 3 walks a day, each, and encouraged good behaviors such as impulse control when encountering other dogs. Not only was he pet sitting but he was doing some good training with our dogs! He also kept us updated very regularly and was very proactive about telling us when either of our dogs wasn't feeling well bad tummy. Samuel has excellent attention to detail and followed our care directions precisely when it came to caring for a bad tummy and our dog recovered very quickly. He was also cognizant of our dog who has a fear of loud noises. Both Samuel and John are very trustworthy and took great care of our homes while pet sitting. Our home was in the same condition if not cleaner than we left it! She would bark, growl, pull at her leash, and could not be calmed until the other dog was out of sight. Not fun! Bobby is obviously more focused and more responsive to me on our walks and the best part of all.We had a pop quiz while out the other evening, when we found ourselves being approached by several dogs from all directions. I used our new techniques and all the dogs passed without a single bark from Bobby. I couldn't believe it. On the human side of things, Bobby's trainer has been fantastic to work with. She is friendly, professional, knowledgeable, great about fielding all my questions, provides useful feedback, and has pointed me toward extra resources to help reinforce the work that she is doing. Our dog was very hesitant about leaving the house and getting into someone else's car. After a few adventures, though, he fell in love with his handler and truly looks forward to his outings with her. He knows the days he's going to be picked up and listens very carefully to the sound of the gate opening. He rushes to the door where his trainer picks him up, and doesn't greet any other human like he greets her. Our older dog is now going out with them as well. Here's why: We have one very friendly dog, and one super-fearful-of-strangers dog who barks at pretty much any person who's not in the family. While planning a ski trip weekend, we decided to go with an in-home sitter, figuring a familiar setting would give him a better chance at success. We had our sitter, Phillip, meet Cider the scaredy pup prior to our weekend away twice. Cider was fearful and barking the first time, but relaxed a little bit the second time and Phillip was wonderful. He figured he would be able to make things work, and he was right. By the third day of his stay with Cider and Posey, Cider had stopped barking at Phillip, and would cuddle near him on the couch. Our dog is a very challenging assignment, and Phillip handled him brilliantly. We will definitely be using DANW in the future and already have an appointment set with a trainer to work with Cider on reducing his fear. She squirms with delight when Clara comes to pick her up, and her recall is getting better each week. She comes home a very tired and happy pup! Dingo also has a back-up trainer he sees at Thursday adventures, so if Jamie isn't available, Dingo still knows the person who will be caring for him. Dingo can't wait to see them - he watches for Jamie coming up the walk even on non-hiking days. He runs to the door to greet them so they can have a quick snuggle and jump in the car so he can see his friends. They communicate and share pictures often, which is great especially when we are away. We can't say enough great things about Jamie and Dog Adventures Northwest. Jamie has been hiking our buddy Dingo once a week and he always comes back worn out and happy. With a lifespan of around 11 years, dog owners should know about the possible Boxers allergies and skin allergies that this breed faces. Knowing how to address each one will give your dog the best, happiest life. Skin allergies can cause irritation and itchiness, but also possible skin rash and infection. Check their skin for allergic reactions when you notice that your Boxer is scratching, chewing, or licking at their skin or a particular spot. These could come in several forms, such as bumps, rashes, dull skin or fur, and possible wounds from scratching or chewing too much. Other signs of allergens could come in the form of sneezing, watery eyes, rubbing their paws on their face, and unpleasant odors from the skin or fur. When in doubt if your dog is suffering from an allergic reaction, make sure to check their skin and face for irritation. Out of these sources, the most common are: Pollens Molds External parasites, such as ticks, mites, and fleas When these types of allergens are around your dog, they will only affect the skin. If an upset stomach and other internal symptoms occur for external allergens, the situation is in a critical condition. As soon as you find a skin-related reaction, help your pup through their symptoms until the reaction has healed and is over. Buy hypoallergenic dog shampoo and bathe your Boxer. If this helps your Boxer, try bathing once or twice a day to reduce symptoms. If you are unsure what is best for your Boxer, check with your vet. If fleas and ticks are the problems, buy and use treatments for the parasite. You can find these are most stores that have dog sections or check out a pet store. Once the infestation has cleared, bathe your dog using hypoallergenic shampoo. If prescribed by your veterinarian, steroids may also help your Boxer. Only use the prescription for the exact infection and allergic reaction that is for the current issue, and use it to its complete entirety. When possible, adapt your walking routine to avoid areas that could potentially have allergens. This could include exchanging parks for sidewalks and hikes in forest areas for walks around streets. Food Allergies Internal symptoms of allergies are often caused by the diet of your Boxer. It may be hard to pinpoint the exact problem. Here are some tips to help narrow down the possible cause of a food-related allergen: Keep track of changes in diet, such as treats and kibble. When feeding non-dog food such as peanut butter or meat , try small trial samples for any reaction before giving large quantities. Try to keep diet changes to a minimum. If you have to change brands or types of kibble, check with your vet or move to a similar option. Make small food changes for a few weeks and watch for allergic reactions. Give your Boxer their normal dog food with a bit of the new brand, then increase to the new brand once you know the dog food is safe for your pup. Occasionally, your Boxer may also eat something without you knowing. When this happens and an allergic reaction occurs, it may be difficult to find the source. Watch your dog after this happens and see if they eat anything outside or out of their usual range. Food allergies for dogs are incredibly common and is commonly caused because of low-quality filler used in commercial dog food. Food Allergy Treatments For Boxers When addressing food allergens, there are steps to take to help both reduce symptoms and find the possible cause of the reaction. To help your Boxer with or find out if they have any food allergens, follow these steps: Stop all treats, current kibble, non-dog foods, and fresh foods. Begin a food trial. Food trials should last for a minimum of eight weeks of a pure and new diet. This new diet should consist of protein and carbs that are without any additional foods. Some examples are fish and potato, rabbit and peas, venison and potato. You can always check with a veterinarian for the best practices when doing a food trial for your specific Boxer. After eight weeks, some dog parents may not move back to their original food. Find other kibble or dog food that excludes any food item that causes irritation and discomfort. When to Contact the Veterinarian If the problem persists after all options and treatments fail, contact your vet for an appointment. More on Dog Knowledge:. Overview Allergies seen with canines is a rather common yet troubling issue. Some Boxers can have minimal symptoms, but others really suffer from all sorts of issues, with skin and coat problems at the top of that list, followed by gastrointestinal distress. While solving allergies can be a bit tricky and does take some time and effort, you may be able to see drastic improvement if all applicable guidelines are followed. In some cases, this can be done from home; but, there are instances when your Boxer will need professional veterinary care for both narrowing down the triggers and for proper treatment. Types of Allergies - Signs and Treatment Your Boxer, if suffering from allergies, may show extreme signs of despair. These can be broken down into 3 categories and they each have their own most common triggers: 1. External: Your Boxer's skin may show a reaction. This can range from slight itching to very bothersome symptoms such as relentless itching that will cause your dog to scratch until he loses fur. Sores can develop; these can quickly become infected. Fur loss may also occur directly from the allergen itself. Fleas on a dog who is allergic to the saliva of a flea will cause terrible itching and lead to serious symptoms Treatment - Fleas are not very hard to get rid of if you use a 3 punch plan. Treat you dog with flea medication to get rid of fleas, both adult and larvae Treat your entire home with flea bombs Use a soothing medication on your dog to begin the healing process of sores and lesions. Deep sores or lesions may need the help of an antibiotic medication, which can be given to you by your dog's veterinarian. Chemicals - A Boxer may have a reaction to the cleaning solution on your carpeting, the detergent used to clean your bed sheets or their dog bed, the shampoo that is used to groom them.Treatment - A dog owner must experiment to determine the cause. Take away 1 element at a time. Since the symptoms can linger for a week or more, allow at least 7 days to see if the element taken out of the picture reduces symptoms. If so, find a permanent alternative. Any deep sores may need an antibiotic treatment, prescribed by your dog's veterinarian. It is not normal for a dog to have either of these symptoms, at any time. If your dog is getting sick in this way, it is best to have them checked out by their veterinarian. Most likely, the cause will be something that was ingested. This is a serious condition that can quickly cause weight loss, malnutrition and dehydration to your Boxer dog. Secondary symptoms such as itching and respiratory issues can develop as well. The Boxer breed is especially sensitive to dog food with a high grain content, particularly those including corn or wheat. Treatment - The process of determining the cause of your dog's allergy may take months. Currently, clinical testing is very unreliable for canines. Elimination testing, done at home, is the common way to help your dog. Each day is a step toward recovery. If the dog is given even a small amount of food that was previously in his or her meals, the test will be corrupted and an owner must begin again from the beginning. Your veterinarian may prescribe a hypo-allergenic dog food or you may offer a simple homemade diet of plain, well cooked white chicken breast and plain, white rice. Note: There is no need to change the daily vitamin and supplemen t; though changing heart worm medication may be needed as some dogs are allergic to chewables. Try to avoid exotic ingredients. Feeding a commercial diet is the most common choice. Unfortunately, there is no good answer. Every dog is different, and there is no perfect food that works for all dogs. You will have to do some research, and try some different brands before you find the food that is right for your dog. Most quality dog foods are not sold in supermarkets, or even in large chain pet stores although they do usually carry at least one or two premium brands. The best place to shop for dog food is at your local feed store, or pet supply shop. And don't worry. The premium brands usually work out to be the same price, or even cheaper than the big name brands! If you decide to feed your boxer a commercial kibble, it is important that you understand how to read and interpret ingredient labels so that you know how to choose a quality food. Ingredients are listed by weight, similar to the ingredients on human food. Therefore the first ingredients are what make up the majority of the food. Dogs are omnivores and need vegetables in their diets, but you want the first ingredients to be some form of meat. Beware the common practice of "Ingredient Splitting" This is where one ingredient is broken up and listed separately in the list, so that it appears like there is less of it in the food. For example, if the ingredients list reads "Chicken meal, Rice, Rice Bran" then there is a good chance that there is actually more rice in the food than chicken, because rice and rice bran are both rice. These ingredients can be fillers that provide little nutritional value for your dog and are sometimes used because they are cheap and easy for a dog food company to obtain. Wheat and corn are two of the biggest causes of food allergies and because boxers as a breed are prone to food allergies, it is especially important for you to be vigilant about what feed your boxer. If your dog doesn't like the food, try a different protein source. Common proteins are beef, chicken, lamb, and salmon. If the specific animal is not identified it is because the ingredient is of such low quality that the producer either could not, or did not want to identify what animal the ingredient came from. Certain known carcinogens are allowed to be used in dog food. Puppy Food Many of the puppy foods available today are largely marketing gimmicks. Your puppy has the same basic nutritional needs as that of a grown dog, so as long as you're feeding a high quality dog food, and feeding the right amount according to the puppy guidelines printed on the bag, then your puppy should be getting everything that he or she needs. One important thing to look at is the amount of protein in the food. Higher protein levels can cause your boxers musculoskeletal system to develop too quickly, which can cause bone and joint problems later in life. Treats Remember that treats are just as much a part of your dogs diet as the food they eat every day. If you are purchasing dog biscuits, make sure to review the ingredient list using the same guidelines explained above. In the FDA report boxers rank 10 out of 19 breeds listed. At this time there is still a lot of unknown, however DCM is a serious disease that can be fatal and everyone needs to be aware of it. The FDA as well as other institutes are continuing to research and investigate into the correlation between diets and ingredients. When you get a Doodle puppy it is very rare that you know exactly what color coat you will get, but you will always love whatever you end up with! Coat color is, of course, affected by parentage, and the colors can range from a single, even color to a wide multi-colored fur. Did you know that the colors can skip a generation or two? The grandparents and great-grandparents can have an effect on the final mature coat pigmentation. As mentioned earlier, coat color is determined genetically and there are several genes that are involved. Genes occur in pairs, one gene being contributed by each parent. This combination of genes will have some being dominant and some being recessive. The combination of the two determines what color the dog will be. Taking the Labrador Retriever as an example, colors that can occur are yellow, chocolate, or black. So it is likely that all silver Poodles have two copies of the greying gene and powerful ones at that! Other shades of grey On top of all this, there are other shades of grey in both breeds, which owners or observers without an interest in the finer details of color inheritance might also casually describe as silver. What cross produces silver Labradoodles? Someone using the term silver Labradoodle could mean a black or brown coat that is either: dilute faded by the progressive greying gene or both! They are all legitimate combinations. But, some are limited to particular Labradoodle generations. On the other hand, 2nd, 3rd, or multigen Labradoodles can express color dilution, progressive fading or even both, depending on their ancestry! To tell them apart, remember that dogs with color dilution are born already dilute, and dogs with the progressive greying gene start densely pigmented, and fade as they mature. But do any of them make a difference to their personality? Is one kind of silver Doodle any friendlier or more trainable than another? At the time of writing, there is no known direct genetic link between coat color and temperament. Labs and Standard Poodles are remarkably similar in terms of overall health and life expectancy. They both live for around 12 years on average, and during their lifetime the most common health problems they have are: Hip dysplasia Joint problems in the knees and elbows Thyroid disease Ear infections Autoimmune skin conditions such as atopic dermatitis and sebaceous adenitis Choosing a puppy from health tested parents is the best way to beat avoidable health problems like these. The two ways your Labradoodle can get a gray coat are: Inheriting the greying gene Inheriting two copies of the dilute gene All dogs have two basic pigments: eumelanin black and phaeomelanin red. Any Poodle — and any Labradoodle — can go grey over time. But, dogs that go gray from age can look quite different to Doodles with the graying gene. Labradoodles with the greying gene will often have a darker coat in puppyhood. But, as they grow it will fade to grey or silver. This means finding a grey puppy is harder, because they may turn grey as they get older, rather than being this color from the offset. The Dilute Gene The other way a Labradoodle can get a grey coat is by inheriting the dilute gene from both parents. Two copies of this gene will turn a black coat to gray. Altered black is calle d dilute because the interaction with other genes dilutes the full-strength black into a milder shade. Some may also call this silver or blue. The dilute gene is a recessive gene. So, a Labradoodle puppy who inherits only one copy of the gene will be a carrier, they will not be grey. A Labradoodle puppy will need to inherit a copy of the dilute gene from each parent dog in order to express it and grow up to have a grey coat. Other Ways a Labradoodle Gets a Gray Coat The greying gene and dilute genes are the two main ways for your Labradoodle to get a grey coat. But, other things can cause this coat color. Three other factors that can potentially cause a grey coat in the Labradoodle breed are: Age And health Age Just as people tend to get gray hair as they age, dogs can also go gray with age. This will usually start around their mouth and eyes. The extent a dog will grey from age will vary. So, if you want a grey dog from puppyhood, look for one with the dilute gene. Health Issues A number of canine health issues can influence coat color. One of the best known is thyroid dysfunction. Kidney and liver damage can sometimes cause premature greying. Dogs with dilute gray coats can suffer from color dilution alopecia, giving them patches of dry skin, thin fur, and poor hair regrowth. Activities such as running, swimming, jogging, cycling, and hiking are just some ways you can keep your mix exercised and in good shape. Boradors also excel at agility, which is a great way to keep your dog both physically and mentally challenged at the same time. Intellectual Stimulation Since they are very smart, border Labs do best with lots of mental stimulation. If not properly challenged, your mix will become destructive and turn to digging and chewing to relieve boredom. A word of caution, a bored Lab border collie mix might be a recipe for disaster! You might return home from work only to find your shoes, pillows, or carpets chewed and shredded to pieces. These dogs crave attention and companionship, and they are best suited for homes where there is someone who can spend a better part of the day playing and interacting with them. When left at home alone a lot, this mix can develop separation anxiety and become destructive. Grooming When compared to other Lab mixes, the borador is a fairly low-maintenance breed when it comes to grooming. Although they shed moderately all year round, their coats are easy to groom and need to be brushed two times a week. Brushing your mix regularly with a slicker brush will help you remove loose hair and keep the shedding to a minimum. Diet An ideal diet for a border Lab should be formulated for medium to large size dogs with high energy. Make sure to feed your mix with age-appropriate high-quality dog food that contains all essential micro and macronutrients. Start training and socializing your borador puppy as soon as you bring them home when they are eight to 12 weeks old. While your pup might seem small, you can start potty training and teach them basic commands. Border Labs make truly wonderful companions and pets to active people or families with children. As a child growing up in church, I remember seeing a picture of Jesus with a lamb wrapped around his neck. As I grew older and visited more churches, I remember seeing similar pictures at a lot of places. I never questioned the image. The Bible is clear that God is our shepherd, and we are the sheep of his pasture, so I assumed the image demonstrated that biblical truth. However, several years ago while I was attending seminary, the image of the lamb wrapped around the neck of Jesus was explained to me. Because sheep tend to stray and will also follow wherever they are led, shepherds often had to discipline lambs that would stray from their shepherd. The shepherd would use his rod to break the leg of a wandering lamb. After binding the break, the shepherd would carry the lamb on his shoulders while the wound healed. If the lamb struggled and fought, it would quickly realize that the broken leg wouldn't allow it to flee. The lamb learned during the healing process that the shepherd could be trusted. The lamb needed the shepherd to provide food, transportation and protection. Once the wound was completely healed, the lamb was fiercely loyal to the shepherd and wouldn't stray from the shepherd's leading. A few years ago a news story broke about Shrek the sheep. Shrek was a Merino sheep who lived in New Zealand. Shrek became famous because he managed to avoid being captured and shorn for six years. His wool continued to grow and thicken, and his eyes were eventually hidden behind the thick coat. Shrek dodged the sheering by hiding in caves and running from his master. Once Shrek was finally captured and shorn, he carried 60 pounds of wool on his body, nearly six times the average amount. The wool on Shrek's body was enough to produce 20 men's dress suits. It's easy to see why the Bible compares us to sheep. We often follow the crowd, even when it leads to our own demise. We stray from the shepherd who loves us and seeks to protect us. We don't appreciate when God disciplines us. But if we surrender to him we learn through the discipline that God can be trusted. We are often like Shrek the sheep as well. We hide from God, clinging to the things that need to be shorn from us. We become weighed down with the burdens God could easily remove from us. The Bible also shares with us that God anointed his people with oil just as the shepherds anointed the heads of their sheep with oil. This wasn't just a symbolic ritual. Sheep are easy targets for flies, lice and ticks. A sheep that was not covered in oil on his head could easily become the victim of infestations of these pests. However, it wasn't just a nuisance. Bugs would crawl through the ear canal of the unoiled sheep and nest in its brain, eating away at it. The pain from the bugs would be so severe on the sheep that the sheep would bang his skull on rocks and against trees to ease his suffering. The sheep could break his own skull seeking relief from the brain-eating parasites. When God offers to anoint us with his oil, it means he offers us protection from the parasites of this world that seek to eat away at us. If we hide in caves, or jump off the proverbial cliffs of this world, dodging his anointing and protection, we may become victims of this world. We may become so filled with pain that we hit our heads against rocks to ease our suffering. God seeks to shepherd us through this life. Oftentimes that is through discipline, sheering or anointing. But it is always with love, and it is always with our best interest at heart. He is our shepherd. He can be trusted when we surrender to his leading.
