We are a family of 4 who live in the country with our farm animals, 4 dogs and 2 cats. We just had 2 Champion litters!! The Sire comes from Champion lines as do both my Dams. All puppies will come with a 1 year genetic health guarantee. The puppies were born and will be raised inside our home with two children, other dogs and exposed to cats, turkeys, ducks, rabbits and chickens. All puppies and the moms went to the vet 12 hours after birth to ensure everyone was healthy. The pups will stay with us until at least 8 weeks of age. We start early socialization once they get their first round of puppy vaccines so the puppies will be exposed to many different animals and people at an early age. Ten years ago, this club hosted what is considered one of the greatest Golden nationals of all time — and probably of any breed — on the shores of Lake Erie. That national was judged by the three iconic women Michele Billings, Anne Clark and Jane Forsyth, which resulted in some amazing moments not soon forgotten. With some very big shoes to fill, and without looking backward, this hardworking, creative Golden Retriever club once again hit it out of the park and hosted an amazing event. Some of the friendliest fairgrounds people I have ever experienced. The entry this year was truly significant, with regular conformation, sweepstakes, and obedience, rally and agility entries. When you add all hunt tests, held at another location, the numbers get staggering. After a few hours of judging, she ended up with a group of very similar class-winning bitches to pick from. A little later, David Harper started 85 males. David was faced with the same problem as Karen, as the quality of the male puppies was as high as has been seen in years. In the end, sweeps finals were judged by Mr. Best Veteran was judged by Mrs. Over the next two days, both dogs and bitches were judged simultaneously. James Brown the country gentleman is there a nicer judge? Wow, did he do a consistent job. His Winners class looked pretty much as if they could have been bred by the same breeder. When I asked Mr. In the other ring, working very hard but truly entertaining the exhibitors and audience, was Mr. Sam Houston McDonald. Never have I seen a judge make exhibitors feel so at ease and enjoy their experience: Thank you, Sam … Nationals are so stressful. If you want a challenge judging, try bitches at a Golden national — it is not for someone weak in the knees. One after another after another, beautiful bitches oozing type entered the ring. In my 47 years of Goldens, they were as good a group as any, and many in there will become well-known names. Then the unenviable job of picking a winner out of a group of cookie-cutter type. How did he do that? Higgans and her handler Ryan Tepara. Ryan has become a very talented Golden handler, and she looked so together for her young age, not easy with a Golden. It was electric to watch the competition between these two; you could point at either and not be wrong. Later, in a large group of 18 Brood Bitches, Mr. What an amazing accomplishment. On Thursday evening, one of the main events of a Golden national, the Top Twenty, was held. What do you do when there are Best of Breed Goldens to judge? You do it over two days. The 76 bitches were judged Friday afternoon, and dogs and non-regulars on Saturday. This phenomenal task was placed in the ageless and very capable hands of Mr. Carl Liepmann. Liepmann acquired his first Golden in , and has stayed active in breeding and purchasing Goldens ever since. I had the honor of finishing a Golden for Carl a long time ago and learned then that all of his Goldens needed to do equally as well in the field as the show ring, as he hunted with all of them. This year the lone bagpiper played the entire time while each Golden ran around the ring as the specials were checked in one by one. Best of Opposite Sex. Now it was time for Mr. Liepmann to get started with his 76 bitches. As is usual for him, he wasted no time getting them sorted into groups of 20 and usually reducing those to 10 to then come back for another cut. Each Golden was thoroughly examined, each one given equal opportunity to shine. Eventually choosing around 35 to join the males the following day, Mr. Even with the larger numbers, the quality was so deep that it was not easy to reduce some groups to 10 as that process continued, but eventually the final male group of around 30 emerged to compete against the females and non-regulars. Liepmann was a master of his ring, moving the dogs around to all areas of the large ring to allow the entire audience to get close looks at the final groups. After much consideration the final cut was reached, and now came the unenviable task of picking the winners. You could tell the struggle was real as each dog remaining was deserving of winning the National on his or her merits. What a group of Golden Retrievers. Well, the time came, and Mr. Liepmann picked his winners. Riese was brought out of retirement at 10 years old to show in the regular breed class, was in spectacular condition and never quit. We moved during COVID to a home with 20 acres, and the first thing we started to do was fence it all in and build a technical pond for our dogs. We also have a pool for them. My entire day, I am here with my dogs in an amazing space made just for them. Our puppies are whelped in our home. I sleep beside the whelping box for weeks as they grow. Every week they reach different milestones in their development and we do different things like early neurological stimulation. They have activity gyms that clang as we feed them and we play storm sounds for them, for example, to desensitize them to new things. We have a great space for them to go explore outside as well. Marissa Hendrix: For Show Puppies, we analyze their movement and structure as they change and mature. Then we watch them gait… again and again… until decisions are made. Selecting Performance Puppies is more about drive, intelligence, and biddability. I think, with all puppies, we watch them grow, then guess, then second guess, and then obsess to a point of finally making a decision. Do I compete in Companion Events? Performance Events? Several puppies that we have bred compete in Performance Sports like Obedience , Rally , and Agility. Are Field Trials or parent club Hunt Tests important to me? Marissa Hendrix: Golden Retrievers have a history and purpose founded on being a hunting dog. Preserving these characteristics and having events to be able to test and challenge these talents in our Golden Retrievers is paramount. Who are the best candidates to own my breed? Marissa Hendrix: One of the staples of our breed is what great companions they make because of their gentle nature and sweet character. Marissa Hendrix: The biggest public misconception in general right now is that breeding ANY other breed to a Poodle other than a Poodle is an okay idea. If I could share a comment or two with judges of my breed, what would I like to say to them? Marissa Hendrix: Make sure to select for temperament as well when evaluating the whole dog. The best judges will always be those who are welcoming to newcomers, patient with young puppies, and supportive of Juniors. Do I have any words of wisdom to pass along to newer breeders? Take time to sit ringside with your mentors and watch the judging at shows to learn. Train with and throw birds for experienced handlers in the field, and also, plop your chair in the gallery at field events—and watch. As a breeder, you will be making a difference through your puppies in the lives of their families. It is your responsibility to be there for the lifetime of your puppies as support, as well as working to make sure your lines are the best possible. Then in the midth century, chocolate Labs started to appear in field trials and at dog shows, and gradually their star began to rise. These days, both colors are popular as working dogs, show dogs, and cherished family pets. However, the number of new black Lab puppies registered every year is still consistently much higher than the number of chocolate Lab puppies. Chocolate Lab vs Black Lab Fun Facts Black and chocolate Labradors both have the potential to become accomplished working dogs — either in the field , as search and rescue dogs, service dogs , military dogs, police dogs or narcotics dogs. Genetically, it is more likely for a Lab to be black than chocolate, because the gene for a black coat will always mask the gene for a brown coat if it is present. Charlie needed around-the-clock nursing care and hourly feedings via a feeding tube. During her first few weeks of life she experienced close calls with a skin infection and aspiration pneumonia. While much of the defect can be seen with the naked eye, a CT scan on the day of surgery showed how extensive the lesion was in the bone. Lawrence Kelly, whose two rottweilers and a bulldog attacked Matthew Henriques and his grandparents April 28 as they walked near their home on Barkley Avenue, appeared yesterday before Judge Randy Sue Marber. Kelly, 25, was arrested following the attack. At the arraignment his bail was continued on the condition that he not harbor or maintain any animals throughout the case. He is due back in court June 5. She said Kelly had ordered an electric fence that arrived on the day of the incident. Previously, the Town of Hempstead had issued six summonses to Kelly — three for leaving each of the dogs unleashed, and three for keeping dogs without a license. When bull-baiting was outlawed in , the lean, long-legged Old English bulldog disappeared as well. Replacing this fierce bullfighter was the roly-poly bulldog we know today. He retained the jutting jaw of his predecessor, but evolved a squatter silhouette and a docile temperament. Bred for physical extremes like a compact body and smushed muzzle, the modern bulldog has more in common with a bowling ball than he does his bull-baiting forebearer of three centuries ago. His brachycephalic, or pushed-in face restricts air flow and can make breathing difficult, especially in warm weather. Most bulldogs cannot breed without human intervention, nor can they deliver their big-headed puppies without Caesarian sections. Bred for centuries for companionship, they are the classic canine couch potato. Are there aggressive bulldogs? Sure, just as there are aggressive Chinese cresteds. But bulldogs are hardly known for inherent aggression, much less the kind predicated on a pack-fueled prey drive. When was the last time you heard of an English bulldog involved in a mauling incident? Not to mention the physical reality: This is a breed that gets winded just exerting itself after a few minutes. Duke likely had a hard enough time keeping up with his Rottweiler buddies, much less joining them in the assault. An exuberant puppy, Duke was likely in the wrong place at the wrong time, guilty by association. Yet he could be euthanized as early as tomorrow unless the rescue group appeals, which it plans to. At the very least, Duke should be evaluated by a certified animal behaviorist. If he shows the least amount of aggression, human directed or otherwise, he should be euthanized. The first trait that comes to mind at the mention of English bulldogs is their penchant for snoring, not aggression. Before Duke pays the price for the company he kept, a professional should weigh in on whether he is the relatively rare exception to that rule.

The French Bulldog has become the most popular dog breed in the UK, and it's the fourth most popular dog breed in the US. There's also a bulldog called Zsa Zsa that's just won the world's ugliest dog competition. So, what's the problem? Well, I think we need to talk. I've spoken before about the issues, or the potential issues we have with our flat nose dog breeds, our brachycephalic dog breeds. These include our Pugs, our French Bulldogs, our Bulldogs, and many more. Any breed that's got a really squashed nose. The health problems in flat-nosed dogs The problem is that these breeds are much more likely to develop a whole heap of problems. Breathing problems, skin problems, joint problems, skin problems and eye problems to name but a few The other issue is that a lot of us as owners simply aren't recognizing these things as a problem. We are accepting them as normal! We think that our dogs snorting and snoring is cute and it's normal. It's a sign that these dogs simply cannot breathe. If a dog can't breathe properly, then there's no way that you can tell me that their welfare is optimal. Now, they might appear happy, but they may not be as energetic, they might not be as playful and they might not be able to do all the things that they really want to do. They're excellent characters, don't get me wrong. They're fantastic, they're super friendly, they're super social, they're very gentle in nature. Their temperament and their character is fantastic, but their bodies don't allow them to express their full nature in a large number of cases. Of course, not every dog in these breeds is going to have all of these problems, but the actual proportion of dogs that do is very high. Personally, I think it's unacceptably high. The ugliest dog in the world Lets take a look at Zsa Zsa, our bulldog who won the ugliest dog competition in .You can see that she's got massive shoulders, her elbows are turned outwards so her joints and her legs are deformed. She's guaranteed to have arthritis, no question, no argument. She's going to have arthritis, her mobility is going to be compromised, and she's going to be painful because of her confirmation. She's also got the most massive tongue you can imagine. That's something that we see with these guys. They've got very short noses, their bones have gotten shorter and less, but the soft tissue within their mouth, within their throat, is still the same. Everything is kind of squashed in. Their airways are really tiny. So in some cases with these Bulldogs when you come to anesthetize them, you're putting a tube down into their windpipe that is the same size you are using in a big cat! You can't get anything bigger down. That's just unacceptable. The problems are getting worse We're breeding lots of problems into these squashed nosed brachycephalic dog breeds. Their popularity is also rising, with our French Bulldogs being the most popular dog breed in the UK and fourth most popular and rising in the US. Without good recognition of these problems, without people being aware of other things to look out for, then things are only going to get worse. We're only going to see more dogs that are suffering. Of course, I'm not picking on the brachycephalic dogs in particular. I'm not saying that no other breed has got problems, of course they do. We know Dachshunds, for example, have got a massively higher incident of joint disease and a serious issue with developing slipped discs. West Highland White Terriers are terrible for getting itchy skin. But the tragic thing with brachycephalics, it's not only their increasing popularity. It's also because these breathing problems especially affect dogs at a really young age. With our Dachshunds, with our German Shepherds or Labradors and their hips and arthritis, they often affect these dogs later on in life. They're healthy when they're young, but become unwell later on in life. Not that this is acceptable, but with our brachycephalic breeds, they're becoming ill or their quality of life is compromised, sometimes from the very moment they're born. Certainly from a very young age they're going to get compromising problems that really have knock-on effect on their quality of life. In some cases, simply their ability to survive is compromised. The other thing we see is that there's no way that some of these dogs can actually give birth naturally. If you look at Zsa Zsa, you'll see the size of her head, the size of her shoulders are enormous. There's no way that a puppy that shape could fit through the pelvis and delivered naturally. We're actually breeding dogs that are unable to give birth naturally! Just think about that for a minute. That's surely not right. The British Bulldog stand made some pretty shocking claims I think it also won the best stand at Crufts, which is something else to think about. Their comment was that actually, it's not that Bulldogs can't give birth, the reason that they have so many cesareans is because of lack of availability of vets to do after-hours work. They don't have to do it themselves, they can arrange for it to be provided by a third party, but all vets in the UK are required to provide an after-hours service to their clients. So quite how that bulldog stand can make that claim is staggering.Lets make these breeds healthy again There are things that we can do as owners. If you really would like a brachycephalic dog, by all means, go for it. But go for it with open eyes. Choose a breeder who is breeding for health. Choose a breeder who is looking to put their nose back on their dogs. That's going to make their risk of breathing problems less. It's going to make their risk of skin infections because of the skin folds less, if their confirmation is better, it's going to make their risk of developing arthritis less. Make sure that you keep your dog a healthy weight. Obesity is a major contributing factor to breathing difficulty; there are all kinds of things that we can do to try and reverse this worrying and very upsetting trend. I discuss a 4-step plan that can help these breeds change in the long term in a past article here on ourpetshealth. It's about raising awareness, letting people know what problems that their future dogs might face, or their current dogs might face, and what we can do to go about it. You might look at the picture of Zsa Zsa and have a little chuckle, but when you actually think about it, when you think that she is the result of what we of humans have done in breeding our dogs; we're not breeding them to be healthy in some cases. We're breeding them to live a life of crippling pain or being unable to breathe. That just can't be right, can it?
