There may be some quirks that make certain elements in need of extra attention. The Pug's easy going temperament and somewhat clingy personality can cause the dog to suffer with Separation Anxiety having a difficult time staying calm when left home alone. Taking time to prepare a really good indoor environment can help quite a bit. Adding isolation to the problem of feeling panicked when left alone only compounds matters. For this reason most Pugs do well with a good sized indoor gated off area that is set up in a main room of the house. The living room or kitchen are good choices. There should be space for toys and chews , a water dispenser, a food bowl, a comfortable sleeping area and a spot with newspaper or pee pads for bathroom needs. If an owner gives in to this during the first year of puppy-hood, it can set up a foundation of begging behavior down the road. It is really difficult to not give in to those "puppy dog eyes" however, setting up rules and guidelines, with feeding in particular, lends to better health. While some "human" foods are perfectly fine for a canine to consume, it is the manner in which a dog is given that food that will either reinforce or discourage the begging. While home cooking for this breed is highly recommended, any food given off of an owner's plate is not a good idea. Once a dog is given any morsel, he will repeat the begging behavior again. A dog metaphorically thinks, "If I begged and received, surely all I need to do is keep up this behavior and I'm sure to eventually receive a treat again! Once this is learned, a Pug will obey commands, listen to the word "No" and show better manners. Meals should be scheduled, and a Pug should be commanded to sit before his bowl is placed down. Eventually, Poodles made their way from the lake to the life of luxury as they were the breed of choice by French nobles, and eventually royalty across all of Europe. To this day, the Poodle is still the national dog of France. The Toy Poodle started in the United States in the early 20th century to be a city-dwelling companion dog. Goldendoodles followed suit and quickly caught on as one of the most popular varieties of Doodle! The size of the Goldendoodle breed is determined mostly by whether the Poodle parent was a standard, miniature, or toy. On top of that, the gender of the puppy and the genetics of the parents play important factors as well. There are three basic sizes of Goldendoodles—toy, mini, and standard. Teacup, Toy, Mini, Medium, Standard Toy Goldendoodles are the smallest and usually weigh less than 20 pounds and stand under 15 inches tall. A Miniature Goldendoodle will weigh in at around pounds and stand roughly inches tall. The Standard Goldendoodle, will weigh approximately pounds and stand about inches tall. In addition to those three sizes, there are two additional sizes used to be more specific. Teacup Goldendoodles describe dogs on the very small end of Toy Goldendoodles. Medium Goldendoodles describe dogs somewhere in the mid-range of Mini and Standard. Their fur can range anywhere from shaggy, like the Golden Retriever to curly like the Poodle and usually is of medium to long length. A minimum of brushing once per week is required for the Goldendoodle breed, with the ideal frequency being every other day if not every day for more curly-haired dogs. Are Goldendoodles Hypoallergenic? Do Goldendoodles Shed? While this can be true, due to the unpredictability of genetics, there is no guarantee that any particular dog, or litter of dogs will be hypoallergenic. Of course, Goldendoodles can vary greatly in size , and their caloric requirements need to be adjusted accordingly. Growing puppies will especially need loads of exercise and play to burn off excess energy. A common rule of thumb is 5 minutes for every month of age, twice a day until adult. This would mean a 5-month-old Goldendoodle puppy should get around 25 minutes of exercise twice a day. Adult and growing Goldendoodles love to swim, which can provide them with valuable exercise. Their playful nature and high agility are great for catching balls and sticks. Because Goldendoodles can have such variations in size, their exercise needs will vary too. For example, a miniature Goldendoodle will require far less yard space and exercise than a larger one. They are obedient and athletic and love learning and responding to commands. While Goldendoodles can begin responding to basic commands as early as 4 months of age, formal training should only begin at months. The best training method for any dog is using positive reinforcement , which is the concept that rewarding good behavior will lead to more of that behavior in the future. They will benefit greatly from agility training too, as they are amazingly agile and eager to please. Their fur type can vary widely due to their mix of genetics. They can have straight, silky hair like their Golden Retriever ancestors or the wiry, curly hair that comes with Poodle genes. Mostly, their coats are a happy medium between the two. Depending on your particular Goldendoodle, their coat may also need regular trimming. One of the best-known traits of Goldendoodles is the fact that they hardly, if ever, shed. If your Goldendoodle has curly or wavy hair like its Poodle parents, regular, daily brushing is essential. If their coat is more similar to a Golden Retriever, regular brushing is not as essential. Both Poodles and Golden Retrievers are prone to hip dysplasia, so this can be a concern in Goldendoodles. Other common issues among these breeds are eye problems and ear infections. Regular eye checks with a vet are recommended, and making sure your Goldendoodles ear canal remains dry will help mitigate any ear issues, especially if they have big, droopy ears. If you notice your dog scratching and itching incessantly, a trip to the vet is in order. It is widely recommended to neuter males and spay females unless you intend on breeding. This has many associated health benefits. For males, it can prevent testicular cancer, lessen aggression, and prevent them from wandering off looking for females, which can get them lost or injured. Spaying a female will assist in preventing uterine infections and cancer. It is recommended to spay a female before her first heat, as this will help prevent these complications. If you intend to breed a female Goldendoodle, you should wait until she has experienced at least one or two heat cycles , as it is far better for her health. Minor Conditions. Therefore, there is no guarantee that your purchased Goldendoodle puppy will fit within your desired weight or size range. Goldendoodle Energy or Activity Level Goldendoodles or Groodles generally have moderate energy levels with smaller Goldendoodles having fewer energy levels than their larger kin. They require playtime or regular good walks and generally regular exercises every day. They can also serve as perfect therapy dogs. Both Parents of the standard Goldendoodle tend to be quick and smart learners. Start socializing and training early and use positive reinforcement methods such as play, food, and praise as rewards to make a great and lovable companion. Also, Goldendoodles are perceived to be hypoallergenic dogs. This means they can be surrounded by people with dog allergies. This is mainly because the poodle one of the parent breeds , is also perceived to be hypoallergenic. But caused by dander which is the dead skin cells shed by all dogs and even people. Cross Breeding a Perfect Goldendoodle Just to achieve a certain temperament, working ability, and appearance, humans have been cross-breeding dog types for millennia. This is mainly how most purebreds like the Australian Shephard, the Affenpinscher, the Brussels griffon, the Leonberger, the Doberman pinscher, the German wirehaired pointer, and the Black Russian Terrier, became popular. But simply cross-breeding two breeds constantly is not enough. To be able to achieve consistency in size, temperament, and appearance, breeders need to carefully select puppies with the desired characteristics and breed them for several generations to establish their traits. The demand for hybrids like the Goldendoodle became high in the last years. This is because people generally want dogs that are different from the dogs they are used to. Goldendoodle Generations Although responsible breeding can reduce the risk of potential problems, their pedigree or Goldendoodle generation plays an important role in their physical traits and risk of potential health problems. The first-generation Groodle always inherits the shedding gene from the golden retriever and sheds everything from a small number to an almost complete retriever. Because F1s always almost shed, I recommend getting a genetically coat-tested doodle from multiple generations. What are the Labeling standards for Goldendoodle Generations? It can be confusing at first, but it gets easier once you get used to it. The Number Numbers are the main indicator of the generation to which Goldendoodle belongs. For instance, number 1 indicates the 1st generation while 2 indicates the 2nd generation. This letter means backcross. It indicates that the Goldendoodle generation needs to be returned to the purebred poodle. Gene mixing tends to reduce the health risks that might be associated with the purebred specimen The Shedding: The majority range from Light to Heavy shedding Potential for Allergy: For a family with Severe to moderate allergies, I do not recommend getting this Generation. However, it is okay for a family with mild allergies. The Coat: Their coat can be naturally grown from inches, and they would require regular grooming and combing. You can choose to trim the fur coat every couple of months. This could help reduce maintenance costs for your Groodle. The Grooming: Moderate-High grooming is required. Image source: Copper Oaks Mini Goldendoodles When you backcross, you breed a hybrid back to one of its parent breeds. For an F1 Goldendoodle, the b would mean that it was bred back to a parent purebred. It could either be a purebred retriever or a purebred poodle. Genetically, It means they are still the first generation. However, the characteristics of either the poodle or the retriever are enhanced. Some breeders often cross a Groodle and Poodle to increase the possibility of having lower-shedding litters. That means the level of shedding reflects the level of a First generation low — high shedding. When a breeder coat tests the pups, this factor may be apparent in the first few weeks of life. It can be anywhere over 35 inches and could become curly, straight, or wavy. If you are worried about how often you brush their fur, you can choose to trim the fur to save grooming time and make your dog comfortable, especially during winter. Because of how genetics work, you might end up with either full golden retrievers or full poodles after cross-breeding two Groodles. The Coat: The coat can be wavy, curly, or straight. Although it is worth noting that the coat texture of young pups is not enough to indicate the future shedding level as the shedding gene is distinct from the curl gene. The Grooming: This depends significantly on the inherited genetic mix of each pup. Being a first-generation Groodle, the F1 parent has a combination of predictable coat characteristics both the non-shedding and the shedding genes. However, the first-generation backcross remains a mystery. If the F1b parent is not genetically tested, the litter may be an F1b litter or an F2 litter similar to the F2 litter above. Genetic health screening is also increasingly important when mixing two parents of the same ancestry. Potential for Allergy: Working with breeders to coat test pups and parents is the safest way for families with allergies to adopt F2b pups. Otherwise, the possibility of taking a hypoallergenic pet home does not favor you. The Coat: The coat might be wavy, curly, or straight. The Grooming: Requires average to high maintenance. Multi-generational and F3 F3 Goldendoodle. At this stage, most breeders usually refer to them as Multi-generational. Shedding: When a breeder performs a coating test, two-parent breeds with zero chance of shedding can be intentionally bred to get a complete litter of non-shedding pups. Even if the breeder is unaware of the genetic makeup of the parents, little guesswork is needed and all shedding-level pups can be produced. Potential for Allergy: Working with breeders that are no strangers to genetic coat testing might be the safest way for families with allergies to get multi-generational pups. The Coat: Their coats might be curly, straight, or wavy. Oftentimes, Multi-generational coats are curly or wavy. The Grooming: Requires average to high grooming. So What Goldendoodle Generation is the Best? When looking for non-shedding and hypoallergenic Groodles, the best generation are F2b, F1b, and F2bb. Goldendoodle Personality and Temperament The Temperament and personality of a Goldendoodle depend on a few factors. Goldendoodles are generally friendly dogs to everyone around them, especially their family. When around kids or infants, they are naturally careful and make great playmates for older kids. Goldendoodles are naturally sociable dogs with a natural ability to interact with people. When it comes to trainability, Goldendoodles are smart , and capable of learning when thought with positive reinforcement techniques. It helps to start training your Groodle puppy the very first day you bring them home. This is because, at a very young age, they are able to learn much faster. Consider taking your Groodle to a training class from weeks. This enables them to learn and socialize. However, you should note that most training classes for puppies require that certain vaccines are up to date. Goldendoodle Common Health Issues Miniature Goldendoodles Truth is, all dogs, regardless of the type or breed have the tendency of getting genetic health issues just like we humans have the tendency of inheriting a particular genetic disease. This is often misleading as a truly reputable breeder would be honest and open about the problems that may occur in the hybrid line. Although a golden retriever may be prone to all the health problems of Golden Retrievers, standard or Miniature Poodles, There is a possibility of lowering the chances of such genetic diseases developing. This is because of the diversity introduced by Crossbreeding. This is why selecting the right breeder is important. Who is the right breeder? To do this, they have to present documents certifying that the parents and possibly, grandparents of the dog have been thoroughly tested and deemed healthy of any genetic disease or problem. Also, have it in mind to protect the Goldendoodle pup from the most common health issues facing dogs. Constantly exercising your Goldendoodle and keeping them at their appropriate weight class is the best way to extend the life of your new companion. Making the right health choices as a dog owner is key to ensuring your dog lives long. Grooming Goldendoodle Goldendoodles come in a variety of coats. Some resemble a loosely curled poodle, some look like a hairy retriever and some fall off along the middle. When it comes to grooming, they are not low-maintenance dogs. Brush the Goldendoodle with a slicker brush at least once every other day and plan to clip its coat every weeks. Also, ear infections could be a problem for Goldendoodles. So, make sure you keep their ears clean and water-free, most especially after your dog has gone swimming or bathed. For smaller dogs which are susceptible to periodontal disease , the benefits of brushing their teeth regularly are that it gives them fresh breath and generally improves their overall health. They are Great Companions Due to their friendly nature and outgoing personality, the Goldendoodle makes for an excellent partner and excellent family pet. They also love eating, so expect to receive some adorable begging eyes from your pup at mealtimes. They are Intelligent It should be of no surprise that this hybrid is one of the smartest crossbreeds, after all Its Golden retriever and poodle parents are equally smart. An average Groodle pup should learn new tricks or skills as a service dog faster and quicker. But do ensure you train and socialize your pup, so it learns to use its high intelligence for good. Little shedding For those who are allergic to dogs, this might be pretty good information. Cons 1. Set aside at least 30 minutes of your day to exercise your Goldendoodle. Plan a proper exercise regime for your dog Both physical and mental exercises. This would help your Groodle shake off the excess energy it has. But you might not need to break the bank for an adorable Groodle. Your local rescue or shelter might have a Goldendoodle just for you. But if you do plan on purchasing a Goldendoodle, Do pick a breeder that prioritizes health and has done the necessary health test which ensures that their Groodles are free from any possible genetic diseases that are common with Golden Retrievers and Poodles. Also, try avoiding breeders that seem in a hurry to unload their Goldendoodle on you. You should also be mindful of purchasing a puppy from a website that offers to quickly ship your pup to you. Take out time to research the puppy you want, so as to not get disappointed or heartbroken. So how do you know which Goldendoodle breeder is reputable? Well, there are a couple of red flags that you should be aware of. Some of the red flags include: Over availability, Having the choice of any puppy. Having multiple litters. The option of paying online. These might all seem convenient but they are risky. However, extensively researching the breed, and facility and generally asking the right questions can help reduce the chances of that happening. What are signs of aggression in puppies All puppies can act aggressively, but if you take steps to address the aggressive behaviors while your dog is a young puppy, you can make a huge difference on how or whether that aggression progresses. These are all forms of aggression and none of them should be tolerated, not as a puppy and certainly not as a dog. There are also dominance behaviors that puppies exhibit that are often mistaken as aggression. They include things like jumping on people, stepping on people, pushing you around, forcing you to pet them and others. While these behaviors can be done aggressively, and should still be corrected immediately, they are not the same as aggression. Definition of puppy Because we often get clients that bring out their dogs that are close to a year old and refer to them as puppies, I want to define what I consider a puppy. A puppy is a dog under six months of age. Most retrievers are a good size by around six months. They will often continue to grow up until about a year and a half, but they have the bulk of their size by the time they are six months. And by six months, you need to have a handle on any aggressive behaviors, or you are going to struggle with eliminating them. Is it normal for a puppy to be very aggressive? It is normal for a puppy to test you with aggressive behaviors. And to be clear, that place should be at the bottom of the pack, under all your family members. I understand that your dog is a part of your family but allowing your dog to be in a position above any or all your family members is just asking for trouble. Treating your dog as a human and attributing your dog with human thoughts and reasoning is not fair to your dog or to your family. Love your dog, but make sure your dog is the lowest member of your pack and you will have a much easier time with obedience and basic good behavior. How to stop puppy growling Growling is often the first step for dog aggression. Or, if you try and take a toy away from your dog. No matter how or when you see the aggression start, it is important to nip it in the bud right away. A sharp NO command sometimes is all that is needed, especially if it is well-timed with the first sign of the growl or nip. Other times you may need to grab your dogs muzzle and squeeze. If these corrections do not seem to be helping, I would immediately crate my dog if it growled at me. Be sure you do not let your dog out of the crate while he is exhibiting a growling behavior. Only let him out if he is behaving appropriately. How to stop puppy nipping or biting A dog that nips or bites you often started as a very young puppy. We teach our puppies at 8-weeks-old that biting and nipping people is not allowed. And at this very young age, they learn it very quickly. Your pup may cry out or squirm, but that is fine. In fact, you need to be quite stern to make an impression. If it continues, you are not being firm or consistent enough. How to stop puppy growling while tugging During play, it is not uncommon for retriever puppies to growl and tug at toys, blankets, even your pant leg. This behavior is usually just playful and natural. However, I would still try to end this behavior as soon as possible. While almost harmless at first, this behavior can escalate quickly as your dog grows bigger and stronger. You can end this behavior first by not participating in it. If you start tugging with a toy with your puppy, you are going to encourage the behavior. The second step is to discourage the behavior with a sharp NO command. It can help if you say GIVE when you take the item. This will start to teach him the GIVE command that will be helpful later if you are a hunter. How to stop puppy baring his teeth A puppy or dog that bares his teeth to you is threatening to bite you. Even if the puppy goes no further than to bare the teeth and growl, you need to end this behavior. This behavior is far more dangerous than the puppy that nips at your hand. The nips may be done in play, since that is how puppies play with one another, but baring of teeth and growling is different. And you must handle it differently. I am not talking about lifting your dog off the floor with the shake, but if your puppy is very young, that may indeed be a great correction. Have you ever witnessed a mama dog correct her puppies? This is not a violent thing, just a natural correction for a puppy. The puppies rarely cry out or whimper when given this correction, they just walk away and understand that the behavior they were exhibiting is not acceptable. If your dog continues to bare his teeth even after this correction, you may have a bigger problem on your hands, and I would proceed carefully. True dog aggression is no joking matter. Dogs with aggression problems can snap at any time and go from baring their teeth to full out attacks. Hyper behavior is different from aggression. A hyper dog has a lot of energy and may not know how to control or channel that energy. Often hyper behavior is a genetic trait. In this sense, it is not something that you can eliminate. But you can take steps to make it more manageable. Exercise more Dogs that are hyper need more exercise than dogs that are more docile in nature. If your dog is hyper and is not getting enough exercise, the hype behavior is going to drive the dog to other behaviors that you may not enjoy such as chewing up your dining room table leg or your favorite pair of shoes. For instance, if your dog is hyper and is jumping up and down all the time, and you not only allow the jumping but pet him or her and give praise while your dog is jumping, then you are unknowingly rewarding the jumping behavior. Give your puppy time to mature Retrievers are often full of energy while they are young, well some a bit longer, but tend to slow down as they mature. But as they mature they do usually slow down and become a bit less energetic. Training Highly energetic dogs can benefit greatly from structured training programs. Programs such as the ones we offer here at Otter Tail Kennels, can teach an energetic dog control and channel their energy into hunting or retrieving which can make home life more manageable. There are even some things you can do at home to get more control of your energetic dog. Practice sitting I know this sounds boring, and for you it is. But for an energetic dog that does not like sitting at all, having them sit for 30 seconds, or a minute or two can be very challenging. They will need many reminders at first, but over time they will learn to settle and sit calmly. You can slowly increase the amount of time. This simple obedience drill will help your dog learn control. Teach your dog the kennel command so that when you say Kennel, they run into their crate and stay there until you release them. This basically sends your dog on a time out and forces them to practice control and settle. Are Golden Retrievers aggressive? Only very seldom. Calm and laid back as your Golden Retriever is, there are going to be times when your golden doggo may be aggressive. They are loving, playful, calm, friendly, smiling, amiable dogs. Are male Golden Retrievers aggressive more often than females? Not really. As mentioned, these dogs are rarely aggressive, but it is more likely that the male Golden Retriever will be more aggressive than the female.
