Tom Thorpe Blog Have you ever wondered how many puppies in a litter of golden retrievers? That said, if you have a female golden retriever and someday you want to let her have some litter, you are prepared and able to calculate some expenses beforehand. In this article, I will attempt to cover the question regarding how many puppies in a litter of golden retrievers. Average litter size of golden retrievers Time and again, we always say that golden retrievers are a one of a kind canine breed. The fact that they are the friendliest, affectionate, energetic, and stranger to none, these reasons are what makes the golden retrievers popular and it will become one for many years to come. Interestingly enough, the largest litter size was produced by a Neapolitan Mastiff back in .On the other hand, the largest litter ever produced by a golden retriever is 17 albeit there are no official records, only online sources that only appeared. With that, golden retrievers are capable of producing a litter between 1 to 17 young pups. We can safely assume that golden retriever breeds have an average litter size of 4 to 8 puppies. For most instances, the first litter size is somewhat smaller compared to succeeding litters. Also, this is true among golden retriever breeders. They know the ins and out of very golden retrievers. Another important fact you should keep in mind is the ratios of females and males differ. Other litter will have more females than males, while in some, males are more. In addition, there is a small chance that the puppies are of one gender only. This is because there are numerous factors that make the outcome of the litter different from any other golden retrievers and other canine breeds. Thereby the question of how many puppies in a litter of golden retriever will likely have come from these factors such as: Consider the genetic factor Every canine is different from the other, although they have some commonality if we are going to categorize them according to their breeds. But still, they have different genetic structures and they are all individual creatures. This also includes the litter size. The most common observation in regards to litter size, if the mother of your female golden retriever produces in large litter size, chances are, your female dog also will produce a large litter size. That is, of course, assuming some factors remain constant. In relation to the litter size, keep in mind that the majority of the traits largely came from a dam female dog and the small percentage came from the sire male dog. The sire has likely had an influence on the litter size. Among the sire can influence are health, age, size, breed, and genetic structures. Gene Pool Diversity At some point, the gene pool diversity will somehow affect the litter size. This again will vary from dog to dog. The fact that canine who are drawn from diverse backgrounds tend to have large litters. Diet Another factor to consider is the diet. Compared to dogs fed with substandard kibble food and supplement. Health Again, health plays a crucial role. This is because they can somehow affect and have a chance to have more puppies. That said, if the golden retriever is not healthy enough, it will inevitably affect the litter size. An ideal healthy weight for golden retrievers is usually slim, and those who are overweight are prone to health issues. Thus, giving a routine exercise and a well-balanced diet has a possibility to produce in larger litters. More particularly in the case of a male dog. Male dogs who are 5 years old and above have a smaller sperm count than those who are in ages 5 years and below. This means the litter size will also decrease. This is the reason why dog breeders who have dog show quality are often bred extremely and intensively in order to produce as many quality female dogs as possible. But, it has a more major point in influencing the size of the litter size than the male and this is actually quite true. That means, dogs over the age of 7 years will have a greater chance to produce large litters than those of young age under 5 years of age. Usually, the first litter regardless of age will likely be smaller than the succeeding production of litters to come. Also, a female golden retriever who was never been bred until the age of 5 will have a tendency to produce smaller litters that are permanent. On that note, the ideal age of female golden retrievers where there is a yield in litter size is between the age of 2 to 5 years. Generally, the larger the breed, the larger the litter size. In the case of golden retrievers, the average size of litter rangers from 4 to 8 and other dog breeds like Spaniels. The fact that genetics and other various factors in dogs alone have the possibility to increase the litter size, all these factors lead to a different outcome and are somewhat related. But can humans influence or somehow affect the size of a litter? Is there any correlation regarding this? The short answer is yes, but to a certain extent only. The long answer is, although yes, there are no guarantees as to how much can humans change the course of the litter size. Fortunately, there are things that humans may likely increase the odds. In fact, breeders who are using artificial intelligence are becoming even more rampant. Thanks to the ai, the chances of finding champion dogs both in the US alone and abroad are getting bigger. However, artificial insemination does not produce large litter sizes. Instead, it only produces a small litter size. Moreover, the kind of semen will largely affect the litter size regardless if it is frozen, chilled, or fresh. In addition, canine sperm will likely die because their semen does not freeze well. Post Breeding Management The best possible and simplest way to somewhat affect the litter size of your golden retriever is just to have the best possible care. Nothing more nothing less. Obviously, any dogs who lack proper nutrition and have an imbalanced diet will greatly decrease the chance of having a large litter size. If the golden retriever has improper housing and has nutrient deficiencies, they can absorb puppies due to lack of care. So, see to it that your female golden retriever has everything they need. Make sure to not miss any appointments in their scheduled checkups with your local vet. Give them proper nutritional needs and also groom them regularly. Care Tips for Golden Retrievers Proper Treatments The best way to secure a healthy pregnancy for your female golden retriever is to have her getting proper treatments. That means, getting treatments for fleas and worms should be consistent even while in pregnancy. Vaccinations Treatments and vaccinations are the most important and should be regularly maintained if necessary. This will guarantee that the antibodies are optimal while the female mother has a puppy bump. Consult your vet with the best possible vaccines in order to keep your dog healthy. There is some vaccination that can be administered while your dog is in pregnancy. The fact that pregnant golden retrievers or any dogs will feel become lethargic when the due is near. With having adequate exercise before their pregnancy, your dog will become fit and able to carry on while she has a puppy bump that is about to give birth. This can lead to stress and other health condition that may greatly affect their pregnancy. Final Thoughts All in all, I hope the question of how many puppies in a litter of golden retriever is completely answered. If you are still confused, the average litter size they can produce is about 4 to 8. Also, if you are a first-time pet owner who has a pregnant golden retriever, you should know what to expect and even know some basic tips regarding the proper care of your pregnant golden retriever. Keep in mind that they should stay fit and healthy plus groom them regularly. Jan 20, Share Golden Retrievers are one of the most popular breeds of dogs in the United States. They are known for their loyal and friendly personalities, and many people choose them as their first dogs. Such a popular breed is always in demand, and more Golden Retriever puppies are born every day. However, there is some uncertainty about how many puppies Golden Retrievers typically have. Due to their size, larger dogs tend to have larger litters, while smaller dogs tend to have smaller litters. As a bigger dog breed, Goldens can have anywhere from one to twelve puppies per litter, but six to eight puppies are about average. Some litters may have as few as four. Read on below to find out more. Why the Size of the Dog Breed Affects Litter Size The different sizes of litter between breeds are due to the fact that larger breeds have more room in their uterus to grow puppies, while smaller breeds have less room. This is likely due, in part, to the fact that smaller dogs have a shorter gestational period and thus less time to mature a large number of offspring at a more rapid rate than larger dogs. This difference in litter size can be important for breeders, as they need to consider the size of the breed when planning how many puppies to produce. However, it is also worth noting that different breeds of dogs will exhibit different average litter sizes, even within the same size class. For example, the German Shorthaired Pointer is around the same size as a Golden Retriever, but has an average of nine pups per litter. The first litter of puppies for a female Golden Retriever is typically smaller in size than later litters. Additionally, since the first litter is typically born earlier than later litters, the puppies may not have as much time to grow and develop before being born. She should, however, have regular checkups with a veterinarian to ensure everything is going well. Despite Golden Retriever mothers being able to deliver many puppies, not every pup will survive birth. A dam may give birth to four puppies, but only two or three will survive. Pregnant dogs require high-quality vitamins, minerals, and premium proteins in addition to a healthy and balanced diet. Additives and fillers in dog food can lead to poor nutrition and ultimately affect litter size. In addition, diet plays an important role in the health and survival rate of puppies after birth. The chances of a Golden Retriever producing a small litter are higher if they are unhealthy. It is also possible that the puppies are born weak and have a lower chance of surviving. Age of Parents Female Golden Retrievers should not be bred too young or too old. Ideally, a female should be between the ages of 2 and 5 when she is first bred. It is also important to consider the age of the male. Once a male reaches the age of 5, their sperm count will decrease. Image Credit: Chendongshan, Shutterstock Lineage Overly inbred dogs are less likely to have large litters than dogs with a diverse gene pool. Ask your breeder about their parents and whether they have been tested for defects if you are looking for a puppy. Conception Method and Timing It may surprise you to learn that the way your Golden becomes impregnated may determine how many puppies she will have. Having a larger litter is more likely for Golden Retrievers that become pregnant naturally while conceiving artificially is more likely to lead to a smaller litter. This is because the freezing process kills many sperm cells in preserved semen, resulting in fewer pups. Dogs that conceive within 48 hours of ovulation have a higher chance of having a larger litter. These larger litters usually occur in the third, fourth, and fifth pregnancy. Puppy Mills Puppy mills are commercial breeding facilities that mass-produce puppies for sale to the public. In a puppy mill, the mother dog is often bred repeatedly until she no longer can bear puppies. There are many reasons why one should avoid buying a dog from a puppy mill. First and foremost, puppy mills are notorious for breeding unhealthy dogs. Dogs from puppy mills typically have a variety of genetic health problems, ranging from joint problems to heart disease. In addition, puppy mills often keep dogs in horrible conditions, with little or no veterinary care. Dogs in puppy mills may also be malnourished and abused. Conclusion In conclusion, Golden Retrievers have an average of eight puppies. However, a breeder or owner can mate their Goldie at the right time, exercise them, keep them healthy, and feed them high-quality food all year long, but ultimately they cannot control the litter size. Thanks for reading! The litter size for a golden retriever can vary from four to twelve. However, the average litter size for Golden Retrievers is eight puppies. This is due to the fact that Golden Retrievers are bred as companion animals and are considered to be excellent family pets. There are a lot of different factors that determine how many puppies your Golden Retriever will have. First, the age of your Golden Retriever. Conversely, older dogs will have larger litters and more puppies, as their reproductive systems are more mature and robust. Secondly, the health of your Golden Retriever. Finally, genetics: if your Golden Retriever is purebred, there may be something in her genes that makes her more likely than others to give birth to large litters or less likely. Some dogs are more likely to produce large litters even if they are not sick. What is the largest litter of golden retriever puppies? According to the Guinness World Records, the largest litter size of golden retriever puppies was .This occurred in when a Neopolitan Mastiff produced the litter. The record-setting litter consisted of 24 pups weighing over 40 pounds each. The breeders had to keep the pups in a separate building just for them because they were all so adorable and wanted to be together! The puppies were fed from a special formula designed specifically for golden retrievers. They did not have names yet and had to be fed individually because their parents could not eat with them. The pups were also taught how to play with each other and socialize to become good companions when they grew up. How long is a golden retriever pregnant for? On average, for Golden Retriever dogs, pregnancy lasts about 63 days on average, give or take a few days. The gestation period is nine weeks or a little over two months. Golden Retriever dogs are generally pregnant for around nine weeks however, this can range from 57 to 71 days. With a planned Golden Retriever breeding, it is best to record the date of mating. If there are two matings, note the dates and expect birth to occur between 63 and 65 days later. They can still go on walks or play fetch with their favorite toy, but ensure they have access to water at all times. This is because the puppies are now part of her family unit, so she wants them safe and secure. Can I touch newborn puppies? Newborn puppies are ready to love, cuddle and play with you. Is the first litter of puppies the best? The first litter of puppies is the best. This makes them stronger and healthier as they grow older. It also means fewer trips to the vet if there are problems with the newborn puppies. Do multiple ties mean more puppies? Multiple ties are when you have two or more breeders who are involved in the process of raising and caring for your puppy. This can be a referral agreement, where one breeder refers you to another already raising puppies with their dogs. A good breeder will match their breeding program with your lifestyle as much as possible. They want to ensure that if they sell their pup to you, it will be an ideal match. A good breeder will get back to you quickly after meeting with potential clients so that they can develop a relationship before moving forward with any kind of sale. How can you tell if a dog is done having puppies? There are a few ways to tell when your dog is done having puppies. The first thing to remember is that you should never force your dog to give birth. If you do, the puppies could die, resulting in serious health issues for your pup. You can tell when a dog is done having puppies by having X-rays taken of her uterus. This will show how many puppies she has and when they were born. When whelping is over, the dog will relax and begin resting while caring for her puppies. This will happen briefly between puppies, but she is likely done if there have been no more pups after two hours. You can also pay close attention to how often they urinate, how often they defecate, and how long they spend lying down and resting. If you notice that these behaviors have changed significantly, she is likely done. What should a mother dog eat after giving birth? After your dog gives birth, she will need to eat a specialized diet. This will ensure that her body can recover from the intense physical exertion of pregnancy and delivery. The best diet for a mother dog is designed specifically for pregnant and lactating females. The best diet for pregnant dogs should be high in omega-3 fatty acids, which are essential for developing all fetal tissues, including the placenta. This food should also contain vitamin E, which helps protect against oxidative damage caused by oxygen radicals; vitamin C, which is important for collagen synthesis; and a good source of protein. The protein should be sourced from animal sources such as chicken or fish instead of grains or beans because they could potentially harm the fetus if consumed during pregnancy. Lactating dogs should receive high-quality food containing adequate amounts of calcium so that their bones can remain strong while nursing their pups. How many times can you safely breed a golden retriever? A golden retriever can be bred safely up to six times. The best practice is liters per dog, but some reputable breeders cap even their fittest, best mothers at around liters so that she can be spayed while she is still young and at her healthiest. Breeders who want to keep their dogs around for a long time will do this because it allows them to continue to care for their dogs as they age. However, if you are looking for a puppy or dog who will grow up quickly, this may not be the best choice. Golden retrievers are generally very healthy dogs but require special attention during these periods. Breeding a golden retriever is a great way to keep the breed healthy and thriving, but it can also be dangerous if not done correctly. This is because your golden Retriever will likely have three or four puppies at a time. How long do golden retrievers live? The average lifespan of a golden retriever is 12 to 15 years. Golden retrievers are considered one of the longest-lived dogs, with their average lifespan being 12 to 15 years. Golden retrievers are known for their longevity and strength, which makes them an ideal breed for many people who do not want to deal with frequent vet visits or expensive medications. These breeds are typically healthy dogs and experience no health problems during their lifetime. However, some circumstances may cause your golden Retriever to develop health problems. If your dog develops any of these conditions, it will become apparent during its lifespan. They have a high energy level, so they need more exercise than other breeds. How much does a golden retriever cost? Golden retrievers are very expensive dogs. This includes everything from the initial purchase of the puppy through its training and health care in adulthood. These dogs are sometimes cheaper than golden retrievers and sometimes as expensive as golden retrievers. How many times can a golden retriever get pregnant in a year? Golden retrievers are known for their excellent health and ability to live long, productive lives. But some things can happen to make their life more difficult. This is when a female dog will ovulate release an egg from her ovary , have a period where she is fertile, and then go back into heat again pregnant. If a female dog is fertile during her cycle, she can get pregnant. Some dogs have longer cycles than others, so they can get pregnant twice a year. The average golden Retriever can get pregnant twice a year. And this depends on the individual dog. Some dogs may have three cycles in a year or even more, depending on the regularity of their periods. Some dogs experience significant stress during this time, which can make them less likely to be able to become pregnant. If you notice signs like increased panting or pacing while outdoors at night, it might be something worth checking into with your vet right away. How do you get more female puppies in a litter? Getting more female puppies in a litter is an important part of owning a dog. There are a few different ways to do this: 1. A balanced diet: Feeding your dog a balanced diet is the best way to ensure that she gets all the nutrients she needs. The best way to do this is to feed an appropriate amount of protein and fat, as well as vitamins and minerals. You should also make sure to feed your dog meals regularly throughout the day so that she always has something to eat when hungry. Puppies need lots of calories to have enough energy to grow into healthy adults. This will cause health problems later in life, such as arthritis or diabetes — which are very common in dogs who have been malnourished as puppies. Exercise: One of the best things you can do for your dog is to exercise her muscles regularly. This helps keep her body healthy and happy, but it also helps her pass on her genes more effectively. If possible, try walking or running with your dog at least once per day; if not possible, try taking them for long walks or at least once weekly. You should also ensure that any toys your dog has access to are gender-neutral so that there are no signs of discrimination by either gender towards each other within the household environment. Breeding with other dogs who are close in appearance: Besides being physically fit, being bred with another dog who looks similar to yours will increase the chances that her pups will also look similar. If your dog is getting along well with other dogs and people, it will be easier for them to adjust when their gender becomes clear. What dog breed has the most puppies? Dogs come in all shapes and sizes, and their litter size can vary widely. For example, Golden Retrievers have litters that average around eight puppies, while German Shepherds tend to have litters that average around .The record for the largest-ever litter belonged to a Neapolitan Mastiff with 24 puppies. When it comes to having the most puppies, larger breeds tend to win. The average dog breed will have around 8, whereas the record for the largest litter belongs to a Neapolitan Mastiff who had 24 puppies. Larger breeds also tend to be more likely to have litters of more than one littermate. Larger dogs can have two litters a year, while smaller dogs usually only have one litter per year. How many puppies survive in a litter? Puppies born to older mothers tend to be more aggressive and less likely to live than puppies born to younger mothers. The number of litter a mother has had also affects survivability. Puppies from mothers with multiple litters have a better chance of surviving than those born from mothers with few litters. Some dogs may give birth to 8 puppies, and only four or five will survive. Some puppies can be born dead, while others may not survive the first 24 hours of life. Also, each puppy is a unique individual who has its genetic makeup, which may affect its ability to survive. Puppies are also more vulnerable than adults because they require a high level of care and attention from their parents during their first few months. How do you prepare a puppy for the first litter? Puppies are so cute and great for your household and the world. The earlier you start, the better. You can start by teaching your puppy how to use a litter box and give them some basic training to behave around other animals and people. You mostly need to make sure that your puppy is in good health. Do male dogs know their puppies? Male dogs are not typically interested in raising pups because of the lack of maternal instincts that most dogs have. According to the American Kennel Club, there are several reasons for this: 1 Most male dogs do not have maternal instincts and will, therefore, not attempt to nurse or care for their pups. In the case of male dogs, paternal instincts are not just a hypothetical concept. Male dogs have maternal instincts towards their puppies , not paternal ones. But why are so many males unable to show this instinct? Some believe it has something to do with testosterone levels in males and whether or not they have been neutered castrated. Other experts believe there may be an issue with communication between mother and child during gestation, but researchers worldwide are still investigating this. Can dogs have multiple fathers? Dogs are polygamous animals, meaning that the female will mate with any available male while in heat. This means that puppies from the same litter may have different fathers. The sperm of each male fertilizes an egg from the female and an egg from another female. If she has two or three different breeds within her family tree, then there is a good chance she has multiple fathers. For example, if you have three puppies born on the same day at the same time, two of them are female, and one is male, then they all come from different parents. Can a dog get a cat pregnant? Dogs and cats are different species. This means that dogs cannot get pregnant by mating with cats. If a dog and cat mated together, nothing would happen! There would be no puppies or kittens. Male dogs have no way of fertilizing female cats, so there will be no puppies or kittens, even if they mate. The only way this could be if their owner allowed them to have sex which would be illegal. Why do you separate dogs when giving birth? Dogs not separated from the rest of their pack are more likely to experience complications during labor, like infection or hemorrhaging. Separating a dog before and after giving birth can also minimize stress on both mother and pup. If you want to eliminate the risk of infection for your dog, you need to isolate her for at least three weeks before and after she gives birth. Some dogs enjoy going outside, while others prefer staying in their own space. If your dog enjoys going outside, use a small kennel or a dog house that is big enough for her to stretch out and lie down inside. These are great because they will help keep your dog cool and protected from bad weather and predators like coyotes who might be lurking nearby. How long are dogs stuck together when mating? Dogs are virtually locked together for minutes two to 30 minutes is also normal , during which time ejaculation takes place. The eggs are fertilized by the sperm and will then be released into her uterus. This process can take anywhere from three weeks to several months, depending on how much time the mother dog spends caring for her puppies after birth. The sperm is then transferred from one dog to the other, and the act of mating is complete. Conclusion Golden retrievers are known for their intelligence, loyalty, and affection. They are also known for their size, and the Golden Retriever is the largest of the retriever breeds. But how many puppies do golden retrievers usually have is determined by factors like age, health, and genetics and varies by the breed and sex of your Golden Retriever. According to the AKC, Golden Retrievers are expected to live between 10 and 14 years, with an average lifespan of around 11 years. However, some Golden Retrievers have lived up to 19 years old with average puppies of 8 in a single litter. Pet Keen is reader-supported. Golden Retriever puppies are fluffy balls of joy, and you must be thrilled to welcome them into your home. But how many puppies should you be expecting from this upcoming litter? On average, Golden Retrievers can have around eight puppies. Litter sizes can vary depending on the breed of dog, so there are a few factors that can determine the litter size of your Golden Retriever. This article goes over what kind of litter you could be expecting based on your Golden Retriever mother. Litter Size: First-Time vs. This is the national average for first-time mothers, so it is normal for your dog to give birth to a few less or a few more. However, it is always important for her to have check-ups with a vet to ensure everything is going well with her puppies. It is very rare that your Goldie will have a single puppy birth. Litter sizes of over a dozen puppies are also possible with Golden Retrievers, but not as common. If your Golden Retriever is pregnant, it is safe to assume that she will give birth to four to nine puppies. While it is always important to feed your dog a healthy and balanced diet, pregnant dogs need high-quality vitamins and minerals and premium protein. Dog food that is filled with additives and fillers can affect the litter size. Diet will also be a factor in how healthy the puppies will be after birth and what their survival rate will be. Health: If your Golden Retriever is obese or not given enough exercise, this can affect the litter. An unhealthy Goldie will more than likely produce a small litter. The puppies might also be born weak and have a smaller chance of survival. Age of both parents. You do not want to breed your female Golden Retriever too young or too old. The age range for the female to be bred is 2 to 5 years old. However, if you wait to breed your Goldie for the first time after they are five years old, their litters will always be smaller in number. The age of the male is also a factor. The sperm count in males will decrease once they reach 5 years old. Genetics: Dogs that have a more diverse gene pool are more likely to have larger litters than dogs that have been overly inbred. This is why if you go to a breeder, ask them about the parents and if they have been tested for defects. Image Credit: PorChonlawit, Shutterstock Final Considerations If you are a dog owner, you already know how important health, diet, and exercise are for raising a strong and happy dog. These factors must also be considered when deciding if you want to breed your Golden Retriever. Have her checked with the vet before she gets pregnant to make sure she is healthy and able to carry a litter safely. Ensure the potential mate is also healthy and the right age. A couple of weeks ago, Raven, our Golden Retriever had her first litter of puppies. Several weeks before she had her puppies we were all curious about how many puppies Raven would have in her first litter. And what did we learn? Bring your Calmeroos Puppy the day you pick up your puppy and rub it all over his litter mates and mama. Ten years later my memory of all those puppies is still vivid. Of course in the end we came home with our first puppy, Linus! Back then the smallest litter we saw was two six-week-old black Labrador Retriever pups. Our friends at Guide Dogs of America have experienced many, many more litters than I have or probably ever will in my lifetime. I would guess they have a litter of pups at the school nearly every week sometimes two litters a week! So what did I hear from my GDA friends? The largest litter I heard about was 16 Golden Retriever puppies! Let me say that again: 16 puppies!!! The smallest litter size was 1 lonely puppy…although only children get all the attention…right, Ali Ali is my wife…an only child :? After personal experience and talking to friends and family the consensus was Raven could have anywhere between 1 and 16 puppies. Our Golden Retriever puppies! Time for a little bit of internet research. Just ask Google the following questions and find the answers in the featured snippet: What is the average first litter size for a Golden Retriever? The average litter size for a golden retriever is eight puppies. Litter sizes vary from four to 12 puppies, and humans are not usually needed for help in the birthing process. Other sites in the top 10 search have similar numbers for average litter size. What is the largest litter size for a Golden Retriever? So we can probably expect less than 24 puppies…lol. The largest litter of Golden Retrievers we found on the internet were 17 Golden pups. The Golden Retriever Forum and other sites mention Golden litters as small as one puppy. After talking to friends, and family, and doing my internet research the consensus was Raven would probably have between puppies with the outside possibilities of only 1 pup or up to 17 remote possibility of 24! We took care of litters of puppies, but the youngest pups we had were already 3 weeks old. We got those little cuties when they were about weeks old and at that age, they were a handful. I specifically remember one of the rescue leaders saying that 5 or fewer puppies are much easier to handle. That number 5 has stuck in my head for over 10 years! My fingers were crossed… Puppies from our our Golden litter! However, the day we planned on bringing her in for an X-Ray her temperature dropped which was an indication she was close to giving birth. Rather than risk her giving birth in my car on the way to the vet we opted out of the X-Ray. Raven went into labor on Wednesday, November 9th, , and at… am — Female. There are a range of factors that contribute to the overall litter size. Often genetics play an important role in the size of the litter. The size of the breed as well as the overall health of parents also effect the total litter size. Golden retrievers are considered a large breed dog, resulting in larger litters. Many sites state various different ranges. Websites, with less authority, like Ask and PetPlanet have a range of puppies per litter. Their overall average is 8. The American Kennel Club used to state that the average litter size was in the range of .However, that information can no longer be found. With smaller litters it could quite possibly be that the bitch was not bred at the proper time. Some of the eggs may not have been fertilized. The stud may have tied too early, or too late. Or it could have been possible that the sire was too old and not producing an adequate sperm count. The overall health of both parents can also be considered. It could also be a problem with the mother, such as injury, or physical defects. With litters on the larger end, sometimes they may have to be delivered cesarean. If the time of delivery is too long, some puppies may be stillborn. Cases have occurred where a puppy may be retained in the uterus causing other problems. Litters this large are generally not in the best interest of the mother. From my experience, most litters are indeed around in number. That could just be coincidental. Further litters often will have less. This is just something I have seen, but is not scientific. It is also important to note that male and female ratios can go in either directions. It is also possible to have a litter with all one gender. Our recent litter from Tina came out all female. She had eight female puppies at once. I was told by another breeder that she had a litter of 10 that were all female. It is very unlikely, but it does happen. We derived that number from hundreds of litters from various breeders. As mentioned above, the range is between 1 to 15 puppies in a litter. A breeder can find out how many puppies a female may have while pregnant via x-ray or ultrasound. An x-ray can be taken after the bones have ossified. That occurs around days of gestation. Ultrasounds can be taken around days to confirm pregnancy, but confirming the litters size is less accurate. It is however less damaging on the mother and puppies.
Aug 18, Share When most people think of Rottweilers, they think of aggressive guard dogs. But Germans have a completely different dog in mind. Every Rottweiler bred in Germany must be friendly, calm, and good with children—not exactly the vicious guard dog we imagine in America! So, what are the differences between American and German Rottweilers? What about the Roman Rottweiler? Does it still exist? Though there is truly only one Rottweiler breed, dogs bred in different countries vary quite a bit. This is because the breed standards are different in countries like Germany and the US. It was used by the Roman legions as a herding dog. The modern Rottweiler was bred in Germany and entered into German stud books beginning in .The name Rottweiler comes from a town in Germany called Rottweil, where the breed as we know it now originated. Rottweilers have been used as working dogs who pull carts, police dogs for the railroads, and even herding dogs. Their strong bodies and willingness to work allow them to do a wide variety of jobs. Height and Weight 24—27 inches at shoulder for males 22—25 inches at shoulder for females 95— pounds for males 80— pounds for females Temperament The AKC lists the Rottweiler as a loyal, loving, and protective dog who makes a good guardian. The dogs are gentle and loving toward everyone in the family, including children. This is what makes the breed a good guard dog. Their coloring is always black with clearly-defined rust markings. Males are typically bigger than females, with larger frames and heavier bone structures. The American Rottweiler has a docked tail. The undercoat is only present on the neck and thighs. The Rottweiler sheds moderately throughout the year. German Rottweiler Image: Pxfuel The best way to tell if your Rottweiler is American or German is to know where your dog was born and bred. If it was bred in Germany, then it is a German Rottweiler. All Rottweilers, including the ones here in the US, descend from German bloodlines. Rottweiler puppies cannot be registered in Germany until both parents pass a strict breed suitability test. In Germany, Rottweilers should be good family dogs, but they should also be able to do calm, intelligent work. The ADRK wants their Rottweilers to be ideal guide dogs for the blind and disabled, security dogs, and police dogs. Appearance In , Germany banned all tail-docking and ear-cropping of dogs. The German Rottweiler, therefore, has a naturally long tail. This tail can appear in a variety of ways. Differences from American Rottweilers at a Glance German Rottweilers are slightly larger and heavier. German Rottweilers have long tails. German Rottweilers were born and bred in Germany. Unfortunately, this is a case of bad breeding rather than an actual subtype of Rottweiler. The Mastiff-type dog s used by the Romans as a herding breed that provided an ancestor for the Rottweiler no longer exist. Breeders intentionally breed a larger and heavier dog than the breed standard calls for. This is harmful to the dog because it makes them much more susceptible to orthopedic problems, including hip dysplasia. They also are prone to snoring and overheating due to their large size. This is because they are typically much larger than either breed standard. Height and Weight 25—30 inches at shoulder for males 24—29 inches at shoulder for females At least pounds for males At least 80 pounds for females In some cases, the so-called Roman Rottweiler is actually a mixed-breed dog of a Mastiff and a Rottweiler. The ADRK also has strict guidelines for breeding Rottweilers , including that the dog is friendly, calm, and good with children. These Rottweilers are susceptible to orthopedic and joint issues due to their increased size. In some cases, the Roman Rottweiler is actually a mixed-breed dog of a Mastiff and a Rottweiler. The breed is a common sight in America, and learning to identify a Rottweiler or Rottweiler cross can prove to be a rewarding experience. To the untrained eye, several breeds of dogs can look the same. But with proper training, one can distinguish a purebred Rottweiler from other dogs. All rights reserved. This image may not be used by other entities without the express written consent of wikiHow, Inc. Conformation means the physical appearance of the dog. Rottweilers have an overall stocky look, with a wide chest, long back, and thick legs. Rottweilers are powerful, muscular dogs, and the overall shape of the animal should invoke a feeling of strength and agility. They have large, heavy paws with high knuckles, and are never flat-footed. Their legs are straight, not bowed outwards, and typically stand such that their shoulders are even with or slightly higher than their hindquarters. Their necks are thick, nearly the same diameter around as their heads. The tail is usually docked cut short , but not always, so the presence of a long tail cannot automatically disqualify a Rottweiler from being a purebred Rottweiler. Their heads are very boxy, being about the same height as width, and only slightly longer from nose to the back of the head. Rottweilers can have a slight wrinkling effect around the eyes, but this should not be too pronounced. The AKC advocates for the responsible ownership of dogs and promotes purebred dog events, such as the Westminster Dog Show. Go to source The ears of a Rottweiler will always fold down with a triangular shape, similar to but smaller than a Labrador Retrievers , and they will never stand upright like a German Shepherd Dog or hang like a Basset Hound. It is also important to note that, of the recognized breeds, Rottweilers are typically credited as having the second strongest bite pressure, behind only the pit bull , when measured in pounds per square inch. To this end, the jaws are robust and heavy, and the head wide in order to accommodate the large muscles needed to achieve this kind of strength. Rottweilers will never have underbites like English Bulldogs. Not every Rottweiler is a perfect specimen. Some may be stockier, longer, taller, leaner, or otherwise different than others of the same breed. Remember that while breed types are usually pretty all-inclusive, it is possible to have small variations, especially those that are environmental in nature, within the same breed. This does not mean the dog is not a Rottweiler, just that it has been spoiled with food. Rottweilers were initially bred for work as protectors and guardians. This means they can be quite dominant, and even aggressive on occasion. Rottweilers are intelligent and active dogs who enjoy playing and completing tasks. As long as you give them a comfortable and loving environment, Rottweilers won't be aggressive. Without proper training as a puppy, Rottweilers can become destructive pets who bark constantly and chew up your furniture or dig in the yard. All Rottweilers have a black base coat on their bodies with distinctive tan markings on their chests, legs, and face. The tan can be a range of colors from a dark mahogany to a red or rusty color, but the black will always be black, never grey or merle, a mix of colors. The brown is typically isolated to the dog's paws, the insides of its legs, its chest, its throat and muzzle, and two distinct dots above the eyes. Go to source This pattern is so unique to the breed that it is simply called "Rottweiler color," even when found on mixed breed dogs. The only other breed to have this coloration naturally is the Doberman Pinscher, which also originated in Germany, but the Doberman Pinscher is very lean, long, and tall, as it was bred for running more than for fighting and intimidation. The Australian Kelpie has very similar markings, but as with the Doberman Pinscher, it is more elongated with its features and more athletic in its activity and prowess. The actual size and shape of the markings may vary between individual dogs. For example, some dogs may have an upside-down wishbone-shaped brown mark on their chests, while others may have a butterfly shape, two separate dots on each pectoral chest muscle , or just a shapeless smudge. The important thing to remember is the overall positioning of the markings. This is considered a fault by the breed standards, but nonetheless some purebred Rottweilers may have white on the chest, between the shoulders, or on the face or paws. Sometimes older dogs will develop white in these areas as well. In these cases, the white is not a fault, but simply an effect of aging. The white on older Rottweilers will typically look more grizzled than pure white, however. Rarely, Rottweilers can be born albino, all red, or with a "bluish" color. These are considered breed faults, but are not predictable. Albino Rottweilers are all white with pink skin and red eyes, but otherwise conform to the breed's physical characteristics. Keep in mind that these are rare mutations, and a red or blue Rottweiler is most likely a mix. A Rottweiler is said to be "blue" when the guard hairs of the coat are a lighter color than the undercoat, resulting in an overall bleaching effect that washes out the entire color. Just because a dog has the Rottweiler color and a stocky build does not make it a Rottweiler. Other breeds, such as the English Mastiff, American Mastiff, Bullmastiff, or Pit Bull can resemble a Rottweiler, and can produce offspring that may look similar to a purebred Rottweiler. Mixed breeds typically have either the conformation of a Rottweiler or the Rottweiler color, but rarely both. A mastiff mix with a Rottweiler will often have jowls or cheeks that hang below its chin when the mouth is closed, and will have excess skin and wrinkling around the face and head. Mixed breeds will often have a longer coat than the short hair of a purebred Rottweiler. Other mixes will produce longer hair than a purebred; one of the most common mixes is Rottweiler with German Shepherd , which sometimes results in a dog with the color and size of a Rottweiler, but the furriness and tail of a German Shepherd. Because of their athleticism and bite strength, Rottweilers are often crossed with Pit Bulls for the purposes of dog fighting. These crosses are typically smaller than purebred Rottweilers, and have a wider, almost bulldog-like stance. Also, a Rottweiler with a curly tail will always be a mix of some kind. In order to be certain that you have a purebred Rottweiler and not, in fact, a mixed breed dog, you should try to acquire some breed registration paperwork. Most purebred dogs have paperwork that accompanies them when they are given to their owners from the breeder. There are a variety of companies that sell home DNA test kits for dogs. So much so that the Poodle is the national dog of France. The Miniature Poodle is slightly more recent. This Mini version likely originated in France. The Mini Poodle has all of the same characteristics as a Standard Poodle; they just come in a smaller package. The Miniature Poodle is one of the smartest dog breeds. On top of their intelligence, they are also known to have a cheerful disposition and a sensitive nature. They get along great with children. Due to their small size, they can be easily injured by rough play or accidental falls that can happen with younger children. Because of this, they may be better suited to a home with older children. Younger children should be fine as long as they are taught how to properly interact with a small dog and interactions between young kids and puppies are closely supervised. Although they are considered part of the Non-Sporting Group, some facts about Miniature Poodles are that they are versatile and athletic dogs that are also quite playful. Provided they are well-socialized, they get along well with other dogs and tend to do well with strangers. They do tend to be protective of their home and can be suspicious of strangers coming up on the property. They are known to bark to alert you of strangers coming to the house. This makes them a good watchdog, but overall, they are more interested in making friends. This dog breed is highly adaptable. The Miniature Poodle does well in any type of home, including apartments, and fits in with just about any family type. They do well in most climates, but, as with many dog breeds, they are sensitive to heat and extreme cold. Because Mini Poodles are people-oriented, they do not like being left alone and will not handle being left alone for long periods of time very well. Good breeding practices make a big difference in the health of puppies. Reputable breeders will screen their dogs to make sure they are not passing preventable issues to puppies. Make sure you ask the breeder about the health and genetic history of both parents and about any health tests or clearances that have been done. Miniature Poodles are highly intelligent, easy to train, and eager to please, which makes them a good fit for owners of any experience level and one of the best dog breeds for first-time owners. They are a people-oriented breed and are sensitive to moods and tones of voice. They do not respond well to harsh training methods or harsh tones as they take it personally, get their feelings hurt, and lose respect for you. A Mini Poodle tends to respond best to consistent training that is fun and focused on positive rewards. A Mini Poodle is one of the fluffiest dog breeds and will have a curly or corded coat that can come in just about any color. Although this dog breed has a low-shedding, hypoallergenic coat, their coat still needs a lot of grooming. They need to be brushed daily to prevent tangles and matting. They should also be professionally groomed every 4 to 6 weeks to keep their coat healthy. Miniature Poodles are high-energy dogs that require a good amount of exercise each day. Daily walks plus some playtime and other activities are usually enough for them. When puppies finish growing and developing, they often enjoy games of fetch and other activities like swimming, hiking, or jogging with their favorite human. Mini Poodles also tend to be great candidates for several dog sports, like agility, tracking, obedience, retriever hunt tests, and more. Just make sure to visit the vet and get your dog cleared for these activities before you jump in. Fully-grown Miniature Poodles usually stand inches tall and weigh pounds. Mini Poodles generally live for years on average. The Miniature Poodle was very popular among the French nobility. Featured Miniature Poodle Article. They are sure to adapt well to their new environments and into their owners' hearts quickly. Family and Companionship In general, due to their kind and gentle nature, Mini and Toy Poodle puppies are great family dogs. They are protective and loving when it comes to their family. These companion dogs adapt quickly to their environment and do well in large family homes or in small apartment settings. Video of Pug Mixed with English bulldog Puppies Temperament Dependable and affectionate, playful and fun-loving, just like its parents, the Pug mixed with English Bulldog is a great family pet, loving to be in the company of its near and dear ones. However, they are not clingy and can even spend a considerable amount of time without your attention. They are perfect couch companions just as their parents because of their relaxed and laidback nature. Having a gentle demeanor, they are a perfect pet for homes with small children, mingling playfully with the little ones. They would also get along well with other canines mainly when brought up together, though the company of strange dogs could make them wary and shy. They might be extremely friendly to any unknown person like their Pug parent, or a little cautious at first and then amicable or ignorant as the Bulldog. Care Exercise Because of their calm and laid back nature, their exercise needs are not too high, sufficing with a minute walk on a daily, alongside ample playtime. When indoors, you could divert its attention and keep it engaged by giving it a toy or puzzle to solve. Grooming Being an average shedder, they need to be brushed daily or once in every alternate day to remove the dead or loose hair. Brushing its teeth on a routine basis would help in controlling plaque buildup. If it has a long snout like the Pug, then it can suffer from respiratory disorders. Training The English Bulldog Pug mix could be stubborn and strong-willed like its English bulldog and Pug parents, thus needing firm and tactful handling. However, since they are a product of two of the most intelligent breeds, training would not be too much of a problem once you have a grip on them. Obedience training is a must to keep their stubborn nature under control. Feeding Feed your Bull Pug with good quality dry dog food. You can also include a homemade diet simultaneously that can have cooked vegetables such as asparagus, spinach, carrots and sweet potatoes as well as fruits like apples, bananas, cantaloupe, and mangoes. However, make sure you remove the pit and seeds. Protein like meat and cheese could also be added. However, all these should be given in moderation and not before you consult your veterinarian. And with that, he will also get the less desirable but easy to fix traits like negligence, excessive barking, and howling oh yes, Beagles are famous for that. Also, an occasional aggressiveness towards its canine counterparts if they are outsiders for our mixed-breed fella. Puggle Bulldogs adore children and are always up for a good playtime! They are curious enough to go explore unfamiliar territory or activities while being extremely protective of their little human friends. However, a male Bull-Pug pal can get extremely territorial while in the same household as the other canine male brothers. You should keep eep that in mind while you prepare the house for a new member of the family if you have other male fur babies. Another issue you as a pet parent might need to pay attention to is the stubbornness of your mixed breed baby. Very often you will notice your pup making decisions that seem fit in a particular situation, without much regard to what you are trying to teach it. In this case, show your pup that following your directions comes with a prize favorite treats and verbal praise as well. Therefore, a furry pal will put two and two together and will listen to you next go-round. But where did it all begin? However, it is still unknown when crossbreeding actually started. But what is certain is that the mixed breed has both Chinese Pug and English relatives Bulldog. Talk about an explosive mixture! Training it is no easy task, although it is a very affectionate and friendly dog. It needs to understand the purpose of various commands you are trying to instill, as well as to know that it will be generously rewarded for doing the right thing. This type of undesirable behavior needs to be nibbed in the bud. Typically, vets highly advise giving out the Hills Science Diet dog food. The reason being that it has a lot of great nutrients like essential vitamins, minerals, and fiber to make sure your pup grows up to be very healthy as well as fit. Health: as you already know, your mixed breed friend has 3 breeds coexisting in it. Consequently, it might develop some of the same problems its ancestors had or even all of them. You just never know. Therefore, it is very important for you as a pet parent to take your pal for regular checkups every year to make sure everything looks normal. To avoid future unnecessary vet costs, it is a good idea to get your pooch from a reputable breeder or a well-established animal shelter where all the mandatory tests are performed. This will ensure that your dog is going to be healthy both physically and mentally, ready to come home. It likes to just lounge around next to its owner. But daily walks are extremely beneficial to keep your pup energetic, fit, and less prone to destructive behaviors. A bored dog is a recipe for disaster. Be sure to provide mental stimulation as well, like dog puzzles or Kong toys. Fill these with some peanut butter, cheese, or mashed potatoes, and your Bull Puggle fur baby will sit there for hours, trying to get every last scoop out. Just remember to get it from a good breeder or a highly-regarded adoption facility to avoid many problems in the future health and behavioral. Take good care of this precious little fella and it will return the favor. Happy bonding! Family Dog Expert Author Hi there! Bulldogs were originally bred in England for the purpose of a blood sport known as bull-and-bear baiting and then, they had a larger and heavier body and were more ferocious. Following the prohibition of bull-baiting in , the Bulldog did not fall out of favor as thought but was bred into the docile, friendly, and affectionate dog that we have now. Upon and after the importation of the Bulldog to America, several bulldog clubs were formed in England and America. Eventually, the bulldog gained official recognition as a distinct breed by the American Kennel Club in and now ranks 12th in popularity. Poodle History While there are a lot of theories regarding the true origin of poodles, the most acceptable is that they hail from Germany. The poodle is one of the oldest known dog breeds with depictions in ancient Egyptian and Roman artifacts. Back in France, poodles were bred into toy and miniature types apart from the standard. The French used the standard poodle for duck hunting, while the miniature poodle helped to sniff out truffles in the wood. The toy poodle served as a companion dog for mostly the upper class. Today, the poodle had gained an aristocratic position as the national dog of France. The Kennel Club of England and the American Kennel Club were the first to register them in and , respectively. The modern Beagle was created in Great Britain for game hunting during the s. In the s, the Beagle was already present in the United States and Americans started breeding them into smaller dogs for the purpose of rabbit hunting. A year after the foundation of the American Kennel Club in , the Beagle was registered as a distinct breed by the same kennel club. Each parent has distinct physical qualities but not without several similarities. We can pinpoint some of those. The Bulldog often has a large, square head with an undershot lower jaw, round eyes and flat muzzle. Their deep-wrinkled face is uniquely designed and they have short ears folded like roses. This breed is well-muscled with a low body and thick limbs. Just like the Bulldog, the pug has a wrinkly face, round eyes and an undershot lower jaw. They have a flat black muzzle and moles on their cheeks called beauty moles, giving them a comical appearance. Their body is thick and muscular with a lot of soft, loose skin. The Beagle looks different from the 2 aforementioned breeds. They are sturdy, compact dogs with long, square-shaped muzzles, brown eyes and floppy ears. The Beagle is a powerful dog in a small body. Their expression is often described as pleading. But the colors may vary from the red, white, brindle, fawn like in Bulldogs to black or fawn like in Pugs or red, lemon, white, blue, fawn, tan like in Beagles. But if you are expecting a medium-sized dog then the bull puggle is best suited for you. The average height of the Bulldog is around 12 to 15 inches whereas the Pug ranges anywhere between 10 and 13 inches in height. The Beagle stands between 13 to 15 inches. A Bulldog weighs around 40 to 60 pounds whereas a Pug weighs anywhere from 14 to 18 pounds. The average weight of the Beagle spans between 18 to 30 pounds. An adult Bulldog Pug Beagle mix will be a strongly built, medium-sized dog that stands as high as 12 to 15 inches and weighs between 22 to 36 pounds. However, this is an estimation because some Bull Puggle Mix might be larger or smaller. Also, French Bulldog mixes tend to be heavier than their English counterparts. The Bulldog Puggle Mix combines the courage and affection of the Bulldog with the playful and sweet nature of the Pug, perfected by the happy, inquisitive and energetic drive of the Beagle. These astonishing pups are gentle, lovable and excellent companions for the family and kids. However, they tend to have an occasional stubborn streak. No doubt the Bull Puggle will be a great furry friend for apartment dwellers. They are satisfied being house dogs but will need daily exercise to keep them mentally and physically sound. Though If your pooch is more like the Beagle, he may be a bit adventurous. Both the Bulldog and Pugs cannot tolerate much extreme temperatures and are happiest indoors. Whether your pooch will be more laid-back and couch-loving like the Bulldog and Puggle or super active, highly vocal and fun-loving like the Beagle is a game of genetics and a bit of luck. Beware that you can have a loud-snoring pooch if the mix favors more of the Bulldog genes. The Bull Puggle loves other dogs and animals but you can never tell whether the prey drive of the Beagle will be dominant. In such cases, small animals may be at risk. This breed may have control over his prey drive if they are well socialized with those animals from puppyhood. However, you should not let them wander around off-leash in an unconfined area. Leaving your pooch in lonesome for long hours may warrant unwanted behaviors like chewing, excess barking and jumping. The Bulldog has a naturally shorter lifespan but can have the benefit of a prolonged lifespan in this breed due to hybrid vigor resulting from the widening of the gene pool. The bull puggle is a fairly new breed therefore, it is better to find out the weaknesses of the parent while looking for potential health problems in this dog. Make sure you buy only from a reputable breeder who can present you with the health clearances of both parent breeds and assure you that they have been tested for specific conditions.
For the complete list please see our German Shepherd Breeders listings page. Prices vary depending on where you get your dog and the bloodlines of your new pup. German shepherd puppies are often purchased by people looking for guard dogs, police work or herding. As a result, the demand is high and prices are high as well. If you are looking for a family dog, they are great dogs, but you should be prepared to spend a bit more than you would for a mutt from the pound. That said, GSDs are known for their intelligence, strength and protectiveness, so many people feel that the extra money is worth it. Responsible breeders only breed their dogs when they have health clearances and genetic testing done on both the sire and dam. They also place puppies in homes that they feel will be good owners, and they typically follow up with their puppies throughout their lives. Responsible breeders also charge more for their puppies because they know that the puppies are going to good homes and that the parents have been health tested. You can find a list of responsible breeders in your area by contacting your local German Shepherd Dog Club or searching online. Responsible breeders will also provide you with a health guarantee for the puppy. This guarantee should cover things like genetic conditions, hip dysplasia and elbow dysplasia. It is important to read the fine print of the guarantee before you buy the puppy to make sure that you are covered in case something happens. Visit Your Nevada German Shepherd Breeder in Person Visiting your breeder in person is very important, and we highly recommend that you do so before you purchase your puppy. This will give you a chance to meet the sire and dam of the litter, as well as the puppies themselves. If possible, try to visit at feeding time. You can also ask to see where the dogs sleep or rest when they are not with their pups. Make sure that all of the dogs appear healthy and happy, without any signs of ill health or malnutrition. All of their food should be fresh, clean water be available at all times, and the kennels or living area should be clean. If you have any questions, the breeder should be happy to answer them. Finding a good breeder is essential if you want a healthy, well-adjusted German Shepherd puppy. Responsible breeders take great pride in their dogs and their puppies, and they are always happy to answer any questions you may have. We hope that this article has been helpful in your search for the perfect GSD pup. A good breeder will be happy to provide you with the names and phone numbers of previous buyers. The best way to find out if a breeder is responsible is to talk to their previous customers. References will give you a look into what you can expect from the breeder, and they will give you a chance to ask questions that might have been missed during your initial phone or in-person interview. Breeders should be happy to answer any of your questions, so if they are reluctant to provide references, it may be a sign that there is something wrong. This will give you a chance to ask them questions about their experience with the breeder, and it will help you get a better idea of what to expect if you purchase a puppy from them. All of the people that you talk to should have nothing but good things to say about the breeder. If anyone has had any negative experiences, the breeder should be willing to work on making things right. However, if most or all of their reviews are negative, it might be a sign that something is seriously wrong. If you find an excellent breeder, they will be happy to introduce you to past customers so that you can get all your questions answered. If the breeder is reluctant to do so, it may be because there are issues with their operation. Good breeders will always take their dogs to the veterinarian when they are sick or injured, and they will also have regular check-ups. It is important to ask the breeder about their relationship with their veterinarian. Signs that a breeder is unethical include: Breeding unhealthy dogs. However, 13 Investigates found that the man who runs it is breeding problems as quickly as he's breeding dogs. It's a fight that's gone from the neighborhood to the courtroom with hundreds of animals caught in the crossfire. And then because they ate it so fast, they threw it right back up. This is the shelter in Pahrump that is contracted with Nye County to house lost and abandoned animals. She's a former Nye County Animal Control officer, and spent 10 years as a veterinary technician. On April 20, she helped Animal Control rescue over two dozen dogs from the Est-Alfa kennel in Pahrump, owned and operated by Vasili Platunov who is one of only a handful of Caucasian shepherd breeders in the country. A Russian breed with a history of protecting livestock from predators, they're often sold as guard dogs. Kakavulias said Desert Haven took the dogs that were in the worst shape, "We had, on the low end, one of the adults was about 38 pounds. We had on a higher end about 55 to 60 pounds. And these are fluffy dogs. He has a second property in Amargosa with as many animals. Platunov told us he was too busy to do an on-camera interview, or let us tour the property. However, Animal Control has been on the property recently, citing him both times, once for care and conditions, and most recently for cruelty. That's according to a source with direct knowledge of the situation. Nye County calls for service records obtained by 13 Investigates show Animal Control has been called out to Platunov's properties at least a dozen times since .Platunov blames neighbors for setting off the dogs by driving ATV's or walking near his property. Then, they call Animal Control complaining about the noise. If you scared of my dogs, why you go [here]? Platunov asks the Animal Control officer if he can write her a check on the spot. She tells him he must take care of it at the court house. On February 7 of this year, Animal Control was called over concerns that dogs appeared sick, and feces were everywhere. Officers confirmed several dogs were very underweight and told Platunov to separate them so they could get enough to eat. Records show he was a no-show for the scheduled follow up, and later refused to meet officers. Records also show he got angry when Animal Control said they needed to check conditions on his property, and he hung up on them when they called. So, county code only allows him to have five dogs. He's been fighting the county in court for years, claiming a permit wasn't required when he bought the property in .However, the court ordered him to shut down and relocate the dogs. He's been moving them to his Amargosa property, which is also generating complaints. When Animal Control was there in May, they counted nearly dogs, but noted kennels were acceptably clean and there was plenty of food and water. An April 17th video provided by animal advocate Gina Greisen was taken at the Amargosa location. The video shows a dog missing his right back leg, which was the result of a fight with another dog. In another video, Greisen questioned the dogs' clipped ears. Greisen said, "Do you clip the ear or do you take them all to the vet? We tried to ask Platunov about all of that on the phone. He told us he's worked with Caucasian shepherds for over 40 years and any allegations he's not taking proper care of them are, "B. This is not how these animals should be living. Desert Haven has adopted out several of the dogs they took in, and they tell us all of them will be ready for a forever home. Over the past week, five pets have gotten sick from an odd, green piece of meat, the station says. The meat doesn't have a normal texture; it's actually kind of rubbery. Authorities say the meat was soaked in some kind of substance so hazardous it's killed three animals and sickened at least two more. A cat that was found before it could be treated died first. Next came Princess, a German Shepherd, and Tink, a chihuahua that was a service dog. Both belonged to Sabrina Buckley. Another animal poisoned was Clyde, a 9-year-old pit bull who's been in critical condition but showed a little progress Tuesday. Clyde was able to go to the bathroom, eat food and drink water. A piece of the green, rubbery tainted meat that's killed at least 3 pets and sickened at least two more in Pahrump, Nevada KLAS-TV The latest incidents stirred up memories for area residents of a similar spate of poisonings in .She says Copper and several other dogs died in Nov. It's been nearly a year and a half since the incident, but Payton says there's no expiration date on justice. The newest batch of animal poisonings has brought back pain for some and paranoia for others. Local officials posted a sign in the neighborhood warning residents not to leave their dogs outside alone. The Nye County Sheriff's Office says there's a clear pattern, and detectives are determined to catch whomever is behind it this time around. Sheriff's Sgt. Michael Eisenloffel says, "It's definitely a serious crime, and the consequences are equally serious. Special to the Pahrump Valley Times. Tim Burke, columnist for the Pahrump Valley Times. We have very close relationships with our pets. They become so integrated into our homes that they are quasi members of our families. Pet owners know how much their pets improve their quality of life. On an emotional level, owning a pet can decrease depression, stress and anxiety; health-wise, it can lower your blood pressure, improve your immunity and even decrease your risk of heart attack and stroke. Children who grow up in a household with pets benefit in myriad ways, especially in their emotional development. Pets properly trained and certified to be a service animal can help someone with a disability lead a more normal life. Unfortunately, some pet owners have taken to calling their pet a service animal when it clearly is not and that has tainted the service animal aspect of pet ownership. What can be considered a pet covers a wide range of creatures. Pets can be reptiles, rodents, fish, horses, and birds, along with many other different types of animals, but the most common family pets are dogs and cats. Sixty-eight percent of U. Dogs get most of the press when it comes to bad behavior. Because of their size and ability to inflict severe damage and even cause death, dogs that exhibit aggressive behavior must be properly controlled to prevent incidents. So, is it the fault of the dog or the owner when a complaint is filed or something even worse takes place? That depends. Dogs are genetically reprogrammed for certain behavioral traits. Prior to when we decided that dogs should be family pets they were bred for a specific purpose. They had to earn their keep by performing specific tasks. Herding breeds like German Shepherds and Collies were bred to herd, working dogs like the Akitas of ancient Japanese lineage were bred to protect children and to hunt bears. Shoemakers and other tradesmen kept them for their rat hunting abilities. Certain breeds of dogs are still used today for specific purposes such as police and military dogs, hunting and sporting dogs, guard dogs, and search and rescue dogs. It is important to keep the working genetics intact in those breeds so that they can continue to do that work. Therein lies a major part of the problem of why dogs sometimes exhibit bad behavior. It is unfair to take a dog that was genetically bred to do a specific type of work and ask them to become a couch dog and guard the TV remote. They want to be busy doing whatever it is that they have been bred for. Doing nothing can cause a great deal of anxiety in the dog that can lead to them acting out with bad behavior. Family pet owners generally do not have the training or experience to properly control the dog and redirect its behavior positively. When picking out a family dog consider your lifestyle and what attributes are important to you. Do you want a lapdog to cuddle with? There are great breeds of dogs for that purpose. If you want to support a local pet rescue shelter, there are some great dogs waiting for the right home. Getting a dog from a shelter can often be a better choice than a puppy because you will be able to see its behavior in your home. Owning a pet can be very rewarding on many levels and it also comes with the responsibility of making sure it is a good fit for your lifestyle. Choose wisely. We have a dog from that we got from you 5 years ago, and we think he is a beauty! You can judge for yourself. Thank you. I look forward to hearing from you. She is such a sweet, smart loving girl! We love her so much! Thank you! Our family feels whole again! Annie, the pup we got from you late last March has turned out to be absolutely everything we had hoped and lots more. Having had goldens for every one of my sixty-six years, my standards are high, and I have had several world-class bird dogs. She is as mellow and easy going as a dog can be but given the scent of a bird and she is ALL business. She is smart and biddable; I just could not hope for a better dog. Grateful in Chelsea, VT. Chelsea, VT .I would add that it is quite unusual to find a Golden from show stock, regardless of how good that stock may be, and have the dog be as good as Annie is. I am not new to this game. She is as fine a dog as I have had for a first-season dog. Watching her learning curve has been astonishing. These are profoundly serious level dogs. Annie is not overshadowed by these dogs at all. All the best, - mm Madison is doing great!!!!!! Everyone had to hug and kiss her. She really is quite adorable. Our Daughter, Son-in-law and 14 month old granddaughter are coming in tonight for the weekend to meet her. I am anxious to see how the babies get along. Our granddaughter loves dogs. They also bring their sweet 4 yr old cat, too. I'll keep you posted, maybe even some pictures. I see all the puppies are spoken for. They are truly special. She is such a sweetie!!! You did such a great job crate training her. Our Nikki loves her. I just bought a new camera today and am charging the batteries now. I will send you a couple of pictures of them together when it is finished charging. She is loving our home and her new Mommy Sophie! We lucked out last night and found a big bag of Royal Canine at Pet Smart, along with many new accessories last night. Many thanks. He is growing so fast and gets smarter everyday. We have so much fun with him. My husband was so surprised and happy I gave him Odie for his birthday. I wanted to update you on Brandy. She's doing really well! She's actually sleeping and snoring on the couch right now - she's claimed her corner of it. She's very smart and friendly. She had completed Puppy Basic and we're in Intermediate Class now. She's very good with children and with my grandparents. My grandfather absolutely adores her, and she walks very slowly with him while he hobbles along on his cane. I sent some photos so you could see how she's grown! She is wonderful - thank you so much. We adopted Abigail from you the end of last February and I contacted you during the summer about a male puppy, well we are now ready. We are looking for a light, big and blocky male. We were interested in the males you just had, but were not quick enough! So, we were wondering if there might be any puppies fitting that description that might be up and coming. We are certainly willing to wait for the puppy. Please let me know if you might have anything available in the near future. Thank you so much! I always enjoy checking out your web site - your Christmas puppies were beautiful. I don't know how you manage to get them in such great poses - your photography is superb. Our Oliver is a very calm and affectionate Golden - we are enjoying him so much. He was a little upset on the ride home, which is understandable, but as soon as he arrived and met his two year old sister, Mitzi Maltese who likes to play every bit as much as he does, all else was forgotten. They have a ball together and wear each other out. He goes to the door whenever he has to go, which is every twenty minutes, and comes when he is called without hesitation. His training starts in earnest this weekend since he is a very smart dog. Instincts run deep. This morning he met our 16 year old cat for the first time, and his reaction was to freeze and point. He held the point for a good two minutes as the cat sized him up and then retreated to a safe loft to think it over. He is a great dog! Below is the announcement to family and friends with pictures. But it's a start. We already have about fifty pictures of him. Thanks for the picture of his mother. I have just moved it into the hard drive and will incorporate it into Montana's CD album. If you ever have a chance to get a picture of his father, we would love to have that as well. It was a pleasure meeting you, and we will stay in touch with pictures as he grows which is by the minute. Hope all is well with you, and quietly hope that you do not get out of the business. You do a great service. Stay in touch. What a wonderful dogso gregarious and affectionate. I wish I had a dollar for every time someone told me how handsome he is. As you may recall, this is my first dog ever and I am completely happy I made the decision. Coby was house trained in two weeks, so he is both smart and good-looking!! Keep up the good work. Frank Happened to visit your site last night and saw that you have a litter of puppies from the same parents that had Gem she was Caroline and I decided to send you some photos so you can see how well she is doing. We have had Gem for nearly 2 years now and, as you can see from the photos, she is a huge part of our family and my children love her so much. She is a very sweet natured dog and has never shown any signs of aggression to people or other dogs. She is so beautiful, people stop me to compliment her all the time. I was interested to see the photos of her parents again, now that she is an adult. I can definitely see a strong resemblance to her father, and from what I recall you telling me about his personality, it seems that she has a good share of that too. Thanks for helping us get such a wonderful dog. She is such a love. She wants to be wherever her people are. We ask where is Gracie? Thank you for a wonderful dog! She is an absolutely wonderful dog and we are loving her to pieces! We live on The Cape and she goes to the ocean to play on the beach every morning and goes walking on the dog trail every afternoon with her best friends Gracie GR and Ella Australian Shepherd and swims in the pond after. The family behind us recently got a puppy about Madison's age, a cross between a beagle and border collie. They play every chance they get. Madison weighs about 66 lbs. She jumps on everyone and licks faces; we are working on that. I have been following your website and all the pups are adorable! Thought you would like this picture. He's a great dog. Very lovable and very smart. Thank You. Shes doing great. Fully house trained, obeys commands sit, paw, stay, etc and is absolutely adorable! She loves people, especially little kids and is gentle and good natured. We love her! Thanks for getting us together! Sonny is doing great! He is such a perfect puppy, he is well on his way as far as potty training and is an angel in his crate at night, we don't hear one peep out of him. We are having so much fun with him and he seems really happy. Thanks again, I will send you a couple of pictures in a separate email. Thank you for our wonderful doggie! She seems to love her new big yard in Austerlitz and is having a ball following us around the house. Today we drove back to Brooklyn and Lily was promptly greeted with a friendly hello from the neighborhood dogs. One was a Goldendoodle and the other a Labradoodle, and together all three were a gorgeous golden color, what a beautiful sight! Lily is also enjoying her Brooklyn backyard and for now seems to have enough room to run around. She likes exploring the different floors of the house as well. Our cat seems to be taking her presence in stride and we anticipate that they will get along well after they become accustom to one another. Thank you for sharing your abundance of knowledge and providing us with an amazingly beautiful, calm and sweet puppy. He is a great dog and very social. I will keep you in the loop and send you some pictures as he grows. We took him out on the ocean yesterday to start to get him use to being on the water as our family spends allot of time there. He loved it and actually slept on the ride back!! Thanks again Dave and Amy, We will keep you updated with pics. These pictures are on his first birthday June 23, .People around watching me with him were just amazed how beautiful and smart he was for his age. We have him in agility and he is amazing. Odie is very smart, has a sweet personality and always has love and kisses for everyone he meets. Oh, he loves to watch golf on television with his daddy. He's been so much fun and we're looking forward to him being part of our family! Thanks again for everything. Love to see more, we are loving Cooper so much. Let me know. .Warm Regards, Denise. He has been such a joy and it has only been two days. Basically, there is zero authenticity with pet stores. When it comes to adopting any animal from a pet store, there is an increased risk of unforeseen health or genetic problems. You also cultivate a life-long relationship with the breeder, meaning support is available to you anytime you may need it. With My Golden Retriever Puppies , you have the option to come and visit both the puppy and the breeder in person! Golden Retrievers are an adaptable breed, meaning they are better at adapting to seasonal changes and various types of climate than certain other breeds. Goldens sport a double-coat, which ensures that these sweet pups are able to tolerate slightly colder temperatures than their friends from other breeds. Your pup deserves better than that, which is why here at My Golden Retriever Puppies , we ensure high-quality care is taken of your pet at all times. If you prefer to meet a breeder in person, they may be able to offer private visits at their home. Of course! Here at My Golden Retriever Puppies , we value family and authenticity, which is why we always guarantee our pups through our 2-year genetic health guarantee. We have been breeding since .We are proud members of the Golden Retriever Club of America. We have litters a year. Our dogs are vital members of our family and all live with us in our home, not in kennels. We participate in different venues depending on each dog's needs and talents -- including obedience, tracking, rally, hunting, showing and therapy work. Butternut Hill seemed to be a fitting name for us. We live on a hill at the base of Butternut Mountain, with our butternut colored Golden Retrievers, who love to eat butternut squash. This is not a profit business for us. It is hobby of passion and labor of love for the Golden Retriever breed. Through our breeding program we strive to promote the health, temperament, workability and the beauty of the breed by adhering to the Golden Retriever Breed Standard as defined by the Golden Retriever Club of America. We feel it is important to retain the ability of the Golden Retriever to be multi-purpose. Each breeding involves in-depth research into the parent's pedigree, genetics, health history, longevity, structure, work ability and temperament. We adhere to breeding practices as recommended by the Golden Retriever Club of America. Our Puppy Raising Philosophy Our puppies are born and raised in our home. We pride ourselves on providing a wholesome enriching environment with an strong emphasis on socialization to get puppies off to the best possible start. Carmen Battaglia. Besides the important interaction with their mother and littermates, daily handling by us, additional enrichment activities begin at a very early age. Our socialization include exposing them to a variety sights, sounds, smells, tastes and touches, which we feel allows them to better cope as an adult dog. Our puppies get to experience a variety of footing such as blankets, sheets, wood floors, tile floors, decking, carpeting, short grass, long grass, concrete, gravel, puppy agility equipment and sometimes snow. They are exposed to toys of all shapes and textures. They get to experience a variety of sounds from our household on a daily basis -- humans conversing, big dogs playing, television or radio playing, vacuum cleaner, washing machine, clothes dryer, dishwasher, front door slamming, etc. We believe in providing a variety of challenges such as climbing steps, going through a tunnel, playing follow the leader, learning to come to a whistle. We trim the puppies nails weekly. When the puppies are old enough, we begin the foundation for house training by taking the puppies outside as soon they wake to relieve themselves. All of our puppies are nurtured as part of our family pack. As they mature they interact with our adult dogs and household cat. The pups are exposed to car rides and short field trips to new safe experiences. And if the season and weather allows -- an opportunity is given to the puppies to go for a swim in a clean, quiet Vermont pond. These activities will help give the puppy a chance to experience new things and meet new people. More than twice as many Labs were registered than any other breed making it a likely leader for many years to come. In a recent article, a licensed professional counselor for more than twenty-five years, explained how owning a Lab can help produce healthier, happier, more well adjusted children. Here is an excerpt from her article: The ten reasons that I am giving for children to have a dog are not listed in order of importance. All of us have different characteristics which we find more important than others. Every reason I list, however, is important to the childhood of your son or daughter. Dogs can help children grow stronger. Just by being a part of the family, dogs can help contribute to keeping your children healthier. According to Science Daily, kids who grow up with dogs have fewer allergies and are less likely to have eczema than other children. They grow up with higher levels of certain immune system supporters that keep them in better shape as they get older. School systems report that children from homes with dogs also have fewer sick days during the school year. Another benefit in this area of physical strength is that kids who play with dogs can take falling down and rough and tumble play much better. But you can always handle a pitbull the nice way with proper training. The pitbull themselves are a cross breed made from the Terriers and Bulldogs. They are famous for their fighting instincts, protective power, and the power to pin down animals. Earlier they were used in dog fights and bull fights. Now they are used as family dogs after the US government has put a ban on dog fights. With proper training they can be excellent family dogs. They are not great for socialization though, and a threat to other animals and pets in and around the family, house, or in the park. They are muscular, with a wide jaw, big mouth, and a big head. They are very active, and needs much more exercising and play than other dog breeds, that is why they are not at all fit for apartment living quite contrary to the Pug. They need open space and lot of ground to play and burn off that excess energy which keeps them on and active all the time. If not given enough play and activity, they can get destructive in the effort to use that excess energy within, which will result in shredded carpets, boots, dresses, cardboard, books and what not. Also pitbulls have the Alpha feeling and instinct in them. Hence to help your pitbull not get dominant and take over on you, you must always keep strict control on it, and never ever let it feel that anyone other than you is the Alpha and controller. It never leaves the side of the owner, and follows the owner everywhere. The Pug is characterized by the funny face with square jaw, flat nose, big bulgy dark eyes, which gives the face a cute and funny look. They are extremely affectionate, attention loving. They are very playful, mischievous, humorous, and loves playing with family and kids. The pug is not a watchdog or a protector. Rather it seldom barks, and generally never bites. Unlike the pug that is quiet, this one barks a lot also. The Pugbull is quite good and adaptable for apartment living, and has a nice temperament towards family. Appearance of the pugbull is short, weighing between 20 to 35 pounds. Nose color of the mix breed may be blue or red or black, and eyes are generally brown. Ears may be rose or button, and tail is very much like the pug, curled up sticking to the back and short. Just like the pitbull the pugbull terrier has a smooth coat and short fur. It inherits the short muzzle of the pug and the almond eye shape of the pitbull. Normally a pugbull terrier would live for 10 to 13 years. Brushing on alternate days is okay. It needs t play and exercise, and demands activities. But training it may take time and patience. Keep strict monitoring and tell it every time that you are the master. Adopting a Pitbull Pug mix If you want to adopt the pitbull pug mix , you must carefully select the breeder. To verify that, and make sure that parents of both breeds were with great temperament and did not bear major generic diseases and problems, the breeder has to be a qualified and reliable one. And this will vary from one breeder to another. Finally If you are looking for a family dog, that is friendly, looks sweet and adorable, needs minimum grooming, and is very loyal as a watchdog, and great with kids then the pugbull is a nice choice. It will demand just a daily walking and playing outdoors for some time, and you need to train it with patience. Knowing all the pug mixes , can help you decide which ones to go for. Appearance is one thing, but the traits and temperaments matter too! Luckily, we have all these information for you. Our staff are avid fans and dedicated owners of Pugs. The Pug Pitbull mix offers the following advantages: Unique appearance: If you choose to go for a mixed breed, you will have a rare, unique-looking pup. This hybrid has a low to moderate shedding rate and requires regular brushing and occasional bathing. Reliable companions: When properly exercised, cared for, and trained, Pitbull Pug mixes make excellent family dogs for households with kids and even with other pets. Usually, having a fur baby can be like a little furry prescription for improved health and well-being for owners. There are plenty of reasons to love Pug Pits, but there are some downsides as well. The disadvantages of mixing Pugs and Pitbulls are the following: May develop genetic health issues: Both Pugs and Pits are prone to major health conditions such as elbow and hip dysplasia, heart diseases, skin-related issues, and cataracts. Sadly, Pitbull Pug puppies are likely to inherit these concerning problems. Their Pit parents hate to be left alone for long periods, so their mixed offspring might feel the same. Once they get bored, you might be shocked to find out that your favorite shoes, furniture, or other valuable things could get chewed up. Ultimately, your decision will also vary depending on your lifestyle. It can become a heavy responsibility, so be sure to weigh the pros and cons before bringing a Pug-a-Pit mix into your life. Lifespan Sociability If you are interested in one of these adorable pups, you will find an active, snarling, rambunctious puppy much like any other young dog. Bred from two purebred canines, the hybrid Pug Pit is best described by looking at their parents. For example, the American Pitbull Terrier is an active, intelligent, and loyal breed that has had a bad rep for being aggressive. Once used as a fighting dog, this breed is not likely to attack or bite a human. Instead, they love to cuddle, be part of the group, and play. On the Pug side, you will find another intelligent and loyal dog that is playful, friendly, and sweet. When you combine these two breeds, you end up with a puppy that is eager to play, cuddle on your lap, and go for rides. They also need to be trained as early as possible. As both of their parents can have a stubborn streak, you will need to have a lot of patience and kindness. If you are a new pet parent, this pooch might not be the best candidate for you. Usually, they are smaller in the body than a Pit but larger than a Pug making them an average or medium size dog. Accommodations When you think of a Pitbull, you typically think of needing a lot of space for them to stretch their legs. The Pug Pit has an average energy level, and they will be comfortable in a house, condo, or apartment as long as they get proper exercise. This leads to a dog that is intelligent, quick to learn, and very comfortable sitting on your regardless of their size! First, they are very loyal and protective. Any strangers that come unannounced will not be met with a wagging tail. That being said, they are not known to be aggressive. Instead, you will get a bark and perhaps a growl. Although they are not aggressive and unlikely to bite, their Pitbull nature gives them a bit of a prey drive. In that sense, they will chase smaller animals. That being said, they will also protect you from other animals including strange dogs. Of course, they react the same way to a balloon, paper towel, or anything else they feel is suspicious. Outside of that, these pups are sweet, gentle, and loving. Their fearless nature also helps in their protective instincts. Something else you should note about this pooch is their stubbornness. Both of their parents have this trait. They will need to be treated with firm kindness with a strong alpha leader; hence they are not recommended for the novice. Are These Dogs Good for Families? They enjoy the general chaos of a large family with kids. They are also good with kids of all ages. They will become very protective of children, as well. However, socializing your dog in their puppy years is important for a well-rounded pet. This is a medium-sized dog that can knock a kid over by accident, too. Single Families On the other hand, this pooch will do well with a single-person household. They will become very attached to their owner and be more protective than ever. If you are single, it is even more important that you properly socialize your Pug Pit. This is one instance where they can have some social and separation anxiety. Getting them used to other people and pets will help them feel more confident on their own and in mixed company. That being said, the Pug Pit is usually better off as the only dog. They can have some territorial and jealous quirks that make it more difficult to rub along well with a canine roommate. They get along with other pets such as cats, however. Again, socialization is key. You may also see them bossing your feline around and being greedy with their toys, food, and your time. Interestingly, the Pug Pit does well with other dogs outside of the home. They can be quite friendly and enjoy a good romp in the park with another furry friend. As a medium-sized dog with an average to high energy level, their meals should reflect their lifestyle. Luckily, this pup does not have a lot of food allergies or restrictions you need to be careful of, but they are prone to weight gain. With that in mind, you want to go for foods that are high in lean protein and healthy fats. Stay away from meals with a lot of sugar and carbs. You also want to look for foods with fiber , antioxidants, omega fatty acids, and glucosamine. Additional vitamins and minerals are also necessary. On average, this pup will eat about a cup and a half of food twice a day. They also need treats and other healthy snacks throughout the day. It is important to consult your vet about their diet, though. As your pet moves from their puppy years into adulthood, their nutritional needs will change. Talk to your vet about the best meals to promote their overall health. We reviewed the best multivitamins for dogs — check out our top picks here! For the most part, two outings per day will keep them content. A minute walk in the morning and a minute romp in the park in the afternoon is typically sufficient. Beyond that, they will also need some indoor or backyard playtime. Spending some time throwing a ball to your pet will do wonders. As we talked about before, this pooch is okay to spend some time alone, as well. It is important, though, that you provide them with toys. Bones or other toys they can chew on are essential. They can bark, chew, dig, and show other behaviors you will not be happy about. They can also become more stubborn, aggressive, and depressed. Being bored is not a good state for them to be in as they will find ways to entertain themselves. As you probably guessed, this breed is not a good candidate to be a backyard dog. Spending time outside alone is not off-limits, though. You need to be careful of overheating with this breed. This is especially true if they have the upturned snout of the Pug. Shade and plenty of water are important along with rest when the weather is hot and humid. Additionally, the Pug Pit has a short fur coat that is not equipped for freezing temperatures. In fact, they are not a fan of the cold, whatsoever. They will need a coat or sweater if they will be outside for extended periods. You can also think about socks or snowshoes when there is ice or snow on the ground. Again, make sure not to overdo it in extreme climates. That is something you should know right away. Although they are very intelligent, they will want to do things their way. It is more about being consistent and rewarding positive behaviors. On the other hand, positive reinforcement does wonders with this breed. Tossing them a treat when they do well will help them pick up the rules quickly. You can use this method for behavioral, obedience, and social training. Just keep in mind, you will not be able to train your pup in a day or even a week. Consistency and repetition are key. Spend a few minutes a few times a day on these activities, and they will pick it up. If you feel more frustrated on a particular day, let it go and start fresh tomorrow. Remember, they take their cues from you! With their short, straight fur, they do not produce a lot of shed. You should give them a good brush with a slicker bristle brush a few times a week. You may need to do it more often during the change of seasons, however. You can also restrict baths to an as-needed basis. You do not want to throw them in the tub too often as it can strip their fur of its natural oils that are used to keep their fur shiny and soft. You also want to make sure they are dried completely when the weather is cold to keep them from catching a chill. Ears, Teeth, and Paws You will also want to check their ears a few times a week for signs of infection, mites, and other debris. You can wipe their ears clean with a cotton ball or other soft cloth, and a dog ear cleaning solution. Additionally, you must check their teeth. Brushing as often as possible is recommended. This pup can have some gnarly puppy breath, so dental treats are also advised. Finally, you will need to trim their nails. A guillotine trimmer usually works best. How often this is done can vary. If you take your pooch out often, their nails will take longer to grow as they are being naturally filed down. This is especially true if you live in a rural area where they are walking on a lot of pavement. Keep in mind, if you start a grooming routine when your dog is a puppy, they will get used to it quickly, and most even come to enjoy it. On the other hand, if you adopt an older dog who is not used to grooming, there is nothing wrong with seeking help. Trimming their nails can be especially tough. Unfortunately, if a parent is predisposed to illness, their offspring is likely to be, as well. Below, we have outlined the more serious and minor health conditions you could run into with your pet. Minor Conditions. However, mixes with a bit more Pitbull to them would be big instead. Usually, such dogs would weigh around thirty pounds, which is actually more than the substantial with dogs that are as athletic as Pitbull and Pug mix. They are around 1 ft tall and it tends to have a bit variation in their height. However, they tend to be a big cheaper compared to some dogs. The low price for the Pitbull Pug mix is because of the relative commonality of Pitbull parent. It means that breeders of Pug Pitt are much easier to find than most of you think. It makes them good for those who are away from their home or those who just do not like to devote lots of time grooming dogs. These dogs have straight and short hair, which can be brushed once in a week to ensure that the natural oils will be kept to make their coat healthy-looking and shiny. Brush their teeth 2 or 3 times weekly to prevent bad breath and tartar buildup. However, to avoid tooth decay, brush their teeth every day. Bathe them only if necessary. You have to take note that Pitbull parent breed is sensitive to touch. Pugs are an aggressive shedder even if they are small. So, make sure to invest in the best vacuum if you like to keep your floors neat as always. In terms of training requirements, Pitbull Pug mix can be challenging to train. These dogs will take the alpha position and would require somebody with a strong and firm hand that could let them know their real place. The good thing you should do is to break sessions to shorter sessions daily to keep the attention span much higher. It could have prey drive as well as be disposed to chasing and running for small preys. Every dog responds best to a positive reinforcement. Therefore, ensure to praise your dog when he does well. These dogs are intelligent and love to please and enjoy a physical challenge. The more exercises your dogs get, the simpler they will be to train. Good socialization is important to every puppy and dog. Ensure that you take your dog to a park or daycare to get him around as many dogs and people as possible. Typically, the Pugbull terrier will live for up to 13 years. It requires grooming as it does not shed much. Brushing on the alternate days is great. You should exercise and play with this dog. Sometimes, Pitbull Pug mixes demand activities. However, training may take patience and time. You should not let it go the way. Some dogs have higher energy, yet they still require a fair share of walking or exercise. Get ready to take this dog for hikes, long walks, and keep his energy level low if possible. You should also be careful if you cannot give your dog the time to exercise. These dogs could hurt themselves and overheat. Tired dogs are good dogs. Do not tie your dog outside. It is inhumane and may not be fair to him. If you are planning to get one of these dogs and you are not sure about it, make sure to read those details above carefully. Bringing home a Pitbull Pug mix can be both good and bad. It depends on some factors and how you deal with pets. Or, if you really want to have a Pitbull and Pug mix, you can always consider hiring dog training experts. With this, you can be assured that your dog will be trained properly. Cons: The physical characteristics of a Pitbull Pug Mix will vary depending on which parent breed it takes after more. However, they will likely have a short, stocky build, a short snout, and a muscular body. This is one of the reasons why breeders and potential dog owners often prefer purebred dogs. However, mixed-breed dogs can be just as lovable and make great pets. Pitbull mix Pugs are generally energetic and playful, and they may inherit the high energy and stamina of the Pitbull breed. They may also be intelligent and trainable, as both Pugs and Pitbulls are known for their ability to learn quickly. It is important to note that the temperament of any crossbred dog can be difficult to predict, as it will depend on the specific characteristics of each parent breed. It is always important to socialize and train any dog, regardless of breed, to ensure they are well-behaved and obedient. Unfortunately, it needs to be clarified when or how the practice of crossing these two breeds began, as there is limited information available on the origin and history of Pit Bull Pug mixes. The American Pit Bull Terrier is a breed of dog originally developed in the United States for bull-baiting, a now-outlawed blood sport in which dogs are pitted against bulls for entertainment. After bull-baiting was made illegal, Pit Bulls were used for various purposes, including hunting, guarding, and as family pets. Today, Pit Bulls are often associated with dog fighting, although many are well-behaved and make great pets. The Pug is a small breed of dog that originated in China. Pugs were popular with the Chinese aristocracy and were often kept as lap dogs. Pugs were introduced to Europe in the 16th century and have been popular in the Western world ever since. Pugs are known for their playful and affectionate personalities and are often considered good companions for people of all ages. Pitbull Pug Mix Appearance The appearance of a Pitbull Pug Mix can vary widely, as it will depend on which parent breed the puppy takes after more. Some Pug Mix Pitbulls may have a more muscular, athletic build and a shorter snout, characteristic of Pitbulls. Others may have a more compact, stocky build and a longer snout, which are characteristics of Pugs. In general, Pugbulls will have a short, smooth coat in various colors, including black, brown, fawn, or brindle. They may also have the signature curled tail and small, floppy ears of a Pug. Overall, Pug Mix Pitbulls are likely to be medium to small in size, with a short, stocky build. It is important to note that the appearance of any crossbred dog can be difficult to predict, as it will depend on the specific characteristics of each parent breed. Pitbulls and pugs are two very different breeds of dog, so it can be difficult to predict the size of a Pitbull Pug mix. However, both species are generally considered medium-sized dogs, so a Pit Bull Pug mix will likely be similar in size. Pit bulls typically weigh between 30 and 65 pounds and stand between 17 and 21 inches tall at the shoulder. Pugs, on the other hand, weigh between 14 and 18 pounds and stand between 10 and 13 inches tall at the shoulder. A Pitbull Pug mix could be anywhere from small to medium in size, depending on which breed it takes after more. However, Pitbulls and Pugs are generally considered friendly and good-natured breeds, so a Pitbull Pug mix could also be a good family dog. Pit Bulls are known for their loyalty and affectionate nature, and they are often considered good pets for families with children. Pugs are also known for their friendly and playful personalities and are often considered good pets for families with children. Pugs are generally low-energy dogs and are well-suited to apartment living. However, they can be prone to obesity and may require a consistent exercise routine to stay healthy. However, both Pitbulls and Pugs are prone to certain health issues, and a Pitbull Pug mix could also be prone to these issues. Pitbulls are generally considered healthy, but they can be prone to certain health issues, including hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, and heart conditions. Pitbulls may also be prone to skin allergies and eye problems. Proper care and regular veterinary check-ups can help to prevent or manage these health issues. Pugs are also generally considered healthy, but they can be prone to certain health issues, including hip dysplasia, eye problems, and respiratory issues. In addition, proper care and regular veterinary check-ups can help to prevent or manage these health issues. The specific dietary needs of your dog will depend on its size, age, and activity level, as well as any health issues it may have. Dogs generally require a balanced diet that includes protein, fat, carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals. Some human foods safe for dogs include cooked lean meats, vegetables, and certain fruits. Cleaning and Grooming Cleaning and grooming your Pug mix Pitbull is an important part of being a responsible pet owner. Regular grooming can help to keep your dog healthy and looking their best, and it can also be a great opportunity to bond with your pet. The specific grooming needs of your Pug mix Pitbull will depend on their coat type and length, as well as their age and activity level. Mixed-breed dogs with short coats may require less grooming than long coats. However, all dogs will benefit from regular brushing, nail trims, and dental care. To groom your Pitbull Pug mix, you will need a few basic tools, including a brush or comb, scissors or clippers, and a slicker brush. You may also need a grooming table or a non-slip surface to work on. This is especially important if your dog has a long or thick coat, as tangles and matting can be uncomfortable for your dog and may lead to skin irritation. How often you should bathe your dog will depend on their age, activity level, and coat type, but most dogs will benefit from a bath every few months. Be sure to use a dog-specific shampoo and avoid getting water in your ears. A consistent grooming routine can help keep your Pitbull Pug mix healthy and looking their best. Training and Exercise Training and exercise are important for all dogs, including Pug mixed Pitbulls. A white dog must be disqualified. Black and Tan and Sable are seen mostly in Working Lines. Solid black dog with classic recessive black genetics is typically a working line, there are however, Solid Black dogs with dominant black genetics seen in Show line. This would be the most common color of this breed. Most of the time this is the type of dog that you would see in the movies or television or even the advertising of this breed. I would venture to say that b-tmore dogs of this color than any other color of this breed does the most winning in the conformation shows. In fact some judges have a hard time putting up some dogs of other colors like the black dog, the bi-color or even the sable dog. For some of them, this is not a color that they prefer. Of course the best structured dog with the most desirable temperament should be the dog that wins. However, it is a known fact that some judges just do not favor other coat colors besides the black and tan variation. West German Show Line The blanket type of coat is where the saddle part of the dog extends approximately to the elbow of the dog. There are no tan markings on this dog. However, sometimes this dog may appear to have a reddish undercoat. Most of the time that is due to the dog being out in the sun too long. Also I have seen a totally black dog have a white splash on their chest. The solid black is a recessive gene meaning that both parents must carry this color gene. Even with a sable, you can see variances in the color of the pigment. Sometimes you will hear people say they own a red sable. Sometimes you will hear them say that they own a gray. So you can find black sables, tan sables silver sables or red sables. This is how much the coat of a sable can vary. Vom Geliebten Haus. Discover the online program that more than 57, dog owners have used to rapidly transform their dog into a well-behaved, obedient furry friend. Ask almost anyone what color a German Shepherd is and they'll describe a saddle back GSD with a black mask in some combination of black and tan or black and red. While there are a number of German shepherd coat colors this is the combination that is most often considered the "classic" look of the German Shepherd. Most German Shepherds fall somewhere in between these extremes of coat colors and coat patterns - black and tan or black and red. Pale washed out colors, shades of blues and livers are considered serious faults in the GSD breed. The amount of tan interpreted as any shade of brown, from fawn, chestnut or silver to deep darker hues or red light red to mahogany markings can also vary quite a bit from black and tan German Shepherd to black and tan or black and red German Shepherd. Some GSD's may have very few markings with a lot of dark color as in the case of a bi-color saddle back German Shepherd consider a "blanket" as opposed to a "saddle" while other GSD's may display the more traditional saddle back coloration with a lot of tan, red or silver and much less black on the body with a dark mask. When born, a saddleback black and tan or red GSD puppy is much darker than they will be at adulthood. Oftentimes they may even be so dark as to appear to be solid black at birth - but this is not the case. When the German Shepherd puppy later dries off it's real marking colors will really be evident - especially around its anus and on the hairs on the puppies feet. Below find a few pictures representative of the traditional saddleback German Shepherd Dog and their coat colors and markings - of the black and tan GSD, black and red GSD and bi-color saddle back German Shepherds. Life Span Did You Know? The German Shepherd is one of the most versatile, well-recognized, and popular dog breeds in the world. The modern German Shepherd is descended from a family of various German herding dogs. Breed standards were not developed until the late 19th century when Captain Max von Stephanitz, a German cavalry officer, worked with Arthur Meyer and other breeders to develop the ideal German herding dog. Stephanitz and Meyer wrote the breed standard in and the American Kennel Club recognized the German Shepherd as a member of the Herding Group in .Although they were originally bred as herding dogs, they were also bred for versatility, which made the German Shepherd an all-around working dog that could excel in a variety of applications. German Shepherds are one of the common dog breeds employed in K-9 units in both police and military applications. They also make great service dogs and, of course, are still awesome herding dogs and farm dogs! The German Shepherd is a strong-willed and highly intelligent dog. They have a playful, energetic spirit and tend to get along with children, other dogs, and other pets, which makes them a great family companion. A born protector, the German Shepherd will provide a great sense of security for their family while their loving and lively personality will make them fit right in as a companion. German Shepherds are naturally protective and can be wary of strangers at first. A well-socialized German Shepherd will bark to alert you and tends to warm up to strangers once introduced. German Shepherds are dogs that were bred to herd and work. This, plus their high energy, makes them a better fit for homes with fenced yards where they can run. They can adapt well to larger apartments as long as plenty of time is dedicated to ensuring they get enough exercise, mental stimulation, and attention every day. A bored, ignored, or under-exercised German Shepherd can often become a destructive one. They also can be sensitive to their surroundings and large gatherings can be off-putting. With a longer coat, they tend to prefer cooler climates and are sensitive to heat. The German Shepherd is a generally healthy breed, but there are some potential health concerns and good breeding practices make a big difference. Potential health concerns to be aware of in a German Shepherd include hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia , and degenerative myelopathy. Reputable breeders will screen their dogs to avoid passing preventable issues to puppies. So, make sure you are asking about the health and genetic history of both parents. You can also ask about any health tests or clearances that have been done. As a barrel-chested breed, the German Shepherd is also at risk for bloat. While the German Shepherd is highly intelligent and highly trainable, they are generally not recommended for novice owners. If you are a novice dog owner, enroll in puppy training classes or enlist the help of a professional dog trainer; not just for your dog, but for yourself as well. Training assistance will help you grow in experience and build a strong bond between you and your German Shepherd puppy, which is essential. Also, the GSD has a thirst for training and fulfillment. They get bored easily and especially with repetition, so continued training with your German Shepherd throughout their life will be necessary. German Shepherds have a medium-to-long double coat. They will shed year-round and heavier as seasons change. Brushing a few times a week is usually sufficient; brushing daily is even better and your GSD will likely love you for it. Bathing is occasional on an as-needed basis. Ear checks weekly with careful cleanings as needed can help prevent ear infections. German Shepherds are high-energy working dogs. Not only do they require a lot of daily activity, but they also are a herding breed that was made to run, guard, and observe, so they need a job to do to be happy and healthy. Daily walks plus playtime, time to run, and other activities are usually enough for a GSD, but they will likely be up for more activity if you are. With their versatility and athleticism, you can try a lot of different activities when puppies finish growing and they are cleared for higher-impact things. A fully-grown German Shepherd usually stands inches tall and weighs pounds. German Shepherds generally live for years on average. Corporal Duncan brought him back to the United States and Rin-Tin-Tin became one of the most famous dog actors in history. Featured German Shepherd Article. Are you looking for a dog with all the amazing characteristics of a German shepherd, but you also want something a bit different and special? If so, then why not consider a sable German shepherd? The sable German shepherd is not a crossbreed dog but rather a recognized variation within the breed, so the dog retains all the benefits of a purebred pup. German shepherds are one of the most popular purebred dog breeds in the United States, in part thanks to their intelligence, trainability, and intense loyalty. They are also well-loved for their sleek, noble appearance. Interestingly, sable is actually the original color of the German shepherd breed. It is the only variation of the German shepherd that has the same color as the founding member of the breed. Read on to learn everything you need to know about these attractive, intelligent, and hard-working dogs. Sable German Shepherd Appearance Sable German shepherds look just like most other German shepherd dogs, with the exception of their distinctively colored coat. The German shepherd is a large breed. You can expect the males to reach up to 26 inches tall and weigh between 75 and 95 pounds. The females are a bit smaller. Their heads are domed in shape with a long, square muzzle. They have alert, erect ears and long necks that make them seem even larger than they are. It is considered ideal for the dog to be longer than it is tall with a proportion of 10 to 8. Their bushy tail should extend out in a hook-like shape. German shepherds tend to dip their head low like a wolf when they are running or prowling, which contributes to the consensus that they look very much like the wolf ancestors of dogs. These dogs have double coats with a soft undercoat and a denser guard layer. The guard layer can be either medium or long, though the medium length is significantly more common. Most German shepherds are either tan and black or red and black. The lighter brown shade is usually their principal color, with a black face mask and black markings on their back which often look like a saddle. A variety of other color variations exist, including pure black, pure white, liver, silver, blue, panda, and, of course, sable. Sable basically means the dog has mostly lighter colored hair with a black tips, which can make the dog appear grey or mottled. In reality, the actual color combinations are more varied, and the sable pattern could be any mixture of tan, black, brown, or red. The term is mostly used in the United States. In other countries, such as Germany, these dogs are often just called grey. It has since become a popular working dog for roles such as search and rescue, police, and military due to its strength, trainability, and intelligence. The breed emerged from the s trend to try to standardize dog breeds to assist in certain jobs, such as herding sheep. Max von Stephanitz was a leading thinker in this area and was specifically looking for canine specimens that matched his ideal vision of a working dog. He found that ideal dog at a dog show in .He purchased the dog and named it Horand von Grafrath and founded the Society for German Shepherd Dogs to promote the breed and others like it. Horand, who was in fact a sable-colored German Shepherd, became the center point of a breeding program. Horand himself had 84 puppies, and extensive inbreeding was required to secure the characteristics of the breed. When the German Shepherd was imported to the United States in the early 20th century, it became popular with gangsters and bootleggers for its strength, intelligence, and intimidating appearance. It was also popular in Nazi Germany, and even Adolf Hitler loved the breed. As a result, it has gained a reputation for being a fierce, intimidating, and even dangerous breed. However, this says much more about how the dogs were used than the natural temperament of the dogs themselves. German Shepherd Temperament The color of a German shepherd makes no difference to its temperament, so you can expect a sable German shepherd to conform to the general temperament of the breed. German shepherd dogs are often described as active and self-assured. This, combined with their intelligence and eagerness to learn and please, makes them excellent working dogs. They are also highly obedient and loyal. Their extreme loyalty also extends to family situations. They will raise the alarm with their loud, deep bark if they sense danger. However, German shepherds are not naturally aggressive. This is a reputation that stems from the way that the dog has been used in the past. That said, German shepherds are often associated with severe dog bites. This is largely due to the popularity of the breed and the strength of their bite rather than any innate aggression; there are simply more of them around than many other dog breeds. Tests suggest that German Shepherds have a bite force of over 1, newtons, which is less than a Rottweiler but more than a pit bull. They tend to have a natural suspicion of strangers and like to chase smaller animals. Their intelligence and compliance means they can be trained not to display this behavior, but as an owner, you need to put in the work of training them properly and consistently. German shepherds are a very curious breed in addition to being highly intelligent, which is why they are well suited for search and rescue missions. German Shepherd Energy Level German shepherds are very playful and active dogs, so they need lots of physical exercise and mental stimulation in order to thrive. This is another reason why they often do well as working animals. Working gives them both the physical and mental stimulation to complete these challenging tasks. Pleasing their handlers is also attractive to these highly reward-oriented dogs. Ideally, German shepherds need at least 60 to 90 minutes of exercise every day, preferably spread over at least two different sessions. However, this should be slightly less when they are puppies. There is always a risk of over-exercising puppies, especially when it comes to large dog breeds. As a general rule, you should exercise a puppy daily for five minutes for every month of their age until they are an adult. German shepherds reach adulthood at around 18 months. So, for example, a six month old pup should be getting 30 minutes of exercise a day if we follow this rule, as six months times five minutes comes out to 30 minutes per day. What to know more about exercising your puppy? Read our article: How far can I walk my puppy? German shepherds will love to accompany you on adventures, such as hikes and walks, and they also love swimming. They will do well at the lake, on the beach, or even accompanying you on a boat. However, even though they are excellent swimmers, they should have a doggy life vest if you are out at sea. They will struggle in an apartment, and their large size can make navigating small apartments challenging even for these nimble dogs. Ideally, they should have a backyard where they can move around freely, especially when left at home alone. The intelligence of these dogs means they can get bored quickly. While puzzle toys, such as a Kong , can help on the occasions when you do need to leave them alone, they are likely to become stressed if they are left alone regularly. German Shepherd Health Risks German shepherds have a life expectancy of a little over 10 years. This is normal for dogs of their size, and larger dogs tend to have shorter lifespans than smaller breeds. You should not expect a sable German shepherd to be immune from these, especially since further inbreeding is often required to produce the sable color. It is common for these dogs to develop hip and elbow dysplasia , which is a developmental abnormality of the joints that can restrict movement and cause pain. This is often the result of different elements of the body growing at different speeds. The best way to prevent this is to ensure good nutrition and the right level of exercise during their crucial growing period. Even if the development of hip and elbow dysplasia does not affect the dog at a younger age, it can make them more susceptible to arthritis and other forms of joint pain when they are older. Older German shepherds often benefit from an orthopedic bed to take pressure off their joints. The breed also appears to be predisposed to degenerative myelopathy. This is a degenerative spinal cord disease that generally shows up in older dogs after about the age of seven years. If you are looking for one of these puppies specifically, you may need to go to a breeder. The sable color is relatively rare, and breeders have to control specifically for this kind of coat. As a result, you can expect to pay a bit more for a sable puppy than you would a German shepherd of any other more common colors. Are you thinking of adopting a sable German shepherd, or any German shepherd, into your family? Here are a few questions to ask yourself to determine if you and your home are a good fit for this breed. German shepherds are highly trainable and obedient, which means even first-time owners should be able to take on the challenge of training them. German shepherds need a commanding presence to keep them in check. The sad reality is that many people are also afraid of big dogs like these, and their behavior and response to them can cause serious problems. You need to feel confident to take control of your dog in charged situations. These dogs are also very active, so they will do best if they have a bit of outdoors to call their own that lets them run around a little, dig, and play. Just be sure your yard is properly and securely fenced in! German shepherds are very energetic dogs that need to be active a lot, which means you will need to be active frequently as well. As well as daily exercise, they will want to join you on weekend adventures rather than weekends on the couch catching up on Netflix. German shepherds need to spend a lot of time with their owners, as they need both companionship and intellectual stimulation. Thinking about getting a new puppy? Check out our new puppy checklist. Sable German shepherds have a coat with lighter roots and darker tips covering most of their body. The tips are usually black, which means the dog looks as though it has a greyish color. It is a natural color variation within the breed. How common are sable German shepherds? Sable German shepherds are significantly rare in comparison to the popular tan and black or red and black colors that dominate the breed. This is why a sable puppy will probably cost you more than other color variations. However, pure black German shepherds are a bit more rare. Are sable German shepherds bigger? No, sable German shepherds are not bigger than other German shepherds. The females should weigh between 55 and 75 pounds and the males 75 to 95 pounds. Look at the size of the parents to get a better feel for how big your pup is likely to get. Are German shepherds good family dogs? With the right training and socialization, German shepherds are excellent dogs for an active household. They will be loving, obedient, and protective. They are good around children, though small children should always be supervised around dogs, regardless of the breed and their level of familiarity. Accidents happen, even when children are around dogs they have grown up with and know well. What is bad about German shepherds? German shepherds tend to be suspicious of everyone, which can contribute to overly protective and territorial behavior. Proper socialization can help minimize this personality trait, but they will probably carry an element of this with them for their entire lives. The Verdict Sable German shepherds are not exotic crossbreeds but rather a rare color of the purebred German shepherd dog. They are actually the original color of the breed, matching its famous founding member. Sable-colored German shepherds are actually relatively rare, so they can be expensive to procure. However, aside from their unique color, they are just like other German shepherds, one of the most popular breeds in the United States. They are large and strong dogs with a lot of energy, which makes them well suited to hard work. They are also highly intelligent and eager to please, which makes them ideal to train to complete complex tasks such as the roles of military and police dogs despite being originally bred as herders. Overall, sable German shepherds are: Rarer than just about any other color of German shepherd No different than other German shepherds as far as personality, temperament, etc. With the right training and socialization, they are very safe dogs. German shepherds are great dogs for active people who have a lot of time to spend with their pup and want a companion to join them on various active adventures.
