Simply mull around near your dog, speaking a bit and acting matter-of-fact. Do not give praise. Wait things out for about 5 minutes. If your Boxer does not nip or bite at you, it will be time to go back to the position that you were in when the bite occurred. It is at this time that if your Boxer does not nip at you that praise and attention can be given. They need regular interaction to stay happy and healthy. They thrive the most in active, large families that will keep them entertained. Due to their high exercise and mental stimulation, they require quite a lot of care and attention. This is best accomplished in larger families, with multiple people to look after the dog. You also need to be very careful when feeding your puppy. The ball and socket of the joint end up misaligning, causing extra wear. Often, this leads to arthritis at an early age. How you feed your puppy has a significant effect on how they grow. If they are fed too much, they will grow faster than they naturally should, which will lead to severe problems with their joints. You should ensure that your dog is adequately exercised and mentally stimulated. A bored and hyperactive dog will often look for things to do, including chewing, getting into cabinets, and similar problem behaviors. For this reason, you should plan on being incredibly patient and expect puppy behaviors from them for a while. Their coat is usually short and dense. They do shed moderately year-round, so we recommend a regular brushing session weekly. This will help keep them clean and remove loose hairs that would end up on your floor otherwise. They may shed more during season changes. Once their coat stops shedding quite as much, you can decrease the sessions back to once a week. They keep themselves cleaned quite easily, except when they roll in mud or swim in swampy water. We recommend keeping their bathing to a minimum, or you may end up stripping them of their natural oils. This can cause problems on their skin and coat, such as irritation. They will also need their ears and nails taken care of. Like all dogs, you should plan on trimming their nails as needed. You can do this yourself at home or visit a groomer. Many of them provide walk-in appointments for nail clippings that are very inexpensive. Their ears are typically not in need of regular care. However, they can get dirty, which can lead to ear infections. Keep your eye out for dirt and debris in the ear and clean them with a wet cotton ball when necessary. They inherit genes from a vast gene pool, which means that they are less likely to inherit genetic conditions. They are still prone to a few problems. We recently adopted Bailey from a local shelter and have learned that we are her 4th home in one year. She is very playful and full of energy. She is very smart and is quick to learn new tricks that we teach her or that she teaches herself. We take her to a local dog park on a daily basis sometimes twice a day where she can run "free" and socialize with other dogs. On days that we are not able to get her to the dog park for exercise she tends to get destructive. We think that the previous owners were not giving her the amount of exercise that she needed. Because she loves to run and jump we are thinking of training her to be a flyball dog, once the basic manners have been mastered. She is very playful and shows no aggression toward other dogs or people, however she has a fascination with squirrels and cats and will chase them if given the opportunity. She has some manner issues that we think are due to being in so many homes in a short amount of time and a lack of consistency with training. We are currently working on the basics with her such as come, stay, off etc. No matter where we take her, people always stop and ask us what kind of dog she is and say how beautiful she is. He is currently being service dog certified, which is a big accomplishment for him. He is 3 and a half years old. He's a very friendly dog, but likes to hide behind mommy and daddy when around strangers or if he hears strange alarming noises. Each time he gets a new toy, it gets a name. He only needs to hear it 2 or 3 times, then has it memorized. If we tell him to go get one, he does. He knows so many words, such as: ride, food, potty, grandma, potato chips, eat…and so many more. We've had to start spelling some words, and he's picked up on that as well. I swear he's part Energizer bunny , he never stops. There are times when he seems too clingy and has separation anxiety issues. He doesn't destroy things, but carries on in a way which you wouldn't expect from a dog his size. He whines and howls in a desperate manner. Since we now live in a town, we try to play with him in the house as much as we can, or throw the Frisbee in the backyard as often as possible.
