They are alert and can be suspicious of strangers, causing them to be quite vocal unless trained and socialized well. If you are looking for a good family dog, this should be at the top of the list. Dogs that are harder to train will require a bit more patience and practice. Proper exercise, nutrition, and hygiene also play an important role in the lifespan of your pet. More social dogs have a tendency to run up to strangers for pets and scratches, while less social dogs shy away and are more cautious, even potentially aggressive. Although Shibu Inus are popular throughout Asian countries like China, Shanghai, Japan, and Korea, they have yet to make leaps in popularity and numbers in North America. For that reason, their hybrid puppies are a little bit harder to come by. That alone can increase their price exponentially, depending on where you live. If you decide to adopt from a breeder, it is best to vet them to know that you are supporting a dog-friendly business. Ask your breeder to give you a tour of their facility. They should be willing to show you any part of their facility that they allow their dogs in. Another request to make before finalizing the adoption is for the health records of the parents. Having these will make you aware of potential problems that you need to keep an eye on while your pup ages. Their feisty characters and spunk are what endears them to their families more than anything. Poo Shis tend to be quite loyal and loving toward their families. They will almost always prefer to be around their family. They can also be quite possessive. When you adopt one of these dogs, expect to do habit training to keep them from getting food or toy aggression. Are These Dogs Good for Families? They are a small to medium-sized dog that tends to be down-to-earth. This means that they usually behave well around children. Although the Poo Shi can have negative temperament traits regarding sharing and their distrust of strangers, you can curb many of these bad habits through socialization methods. Start to socialize your dog as young as you can, and they will often become pups that can quickly adapt to being around other kinds of pets, both cats and dogs. As long as they get around 2 cups of food each day, they should be satisfied. Adjust the diet accordingly if your dog consistently gets more exercise. Your vet can also help you find the right amount and balance of food to keep them healthy and happy. Space the meals out to at least two each day, although three or four meals a day are better. Having less food spread out between multiple meals allows their digestive system to keep up with their intake and results in fewer stomach upsets and digestive issues. You can even jog with them, although be careful to work up to a longer or faster-paced run because their natural endurance is relatively low. If you prefer to walk with your dog more than any other exercise, try to walk them about 8 miles each week. It is best to be patient and firm but kind because they will not take it well if you start to yell or get frustrated with them. You will likely need to train them out of some of their more natural tendencies, like barking at unknown sounds and people or food aggression. They are hypoallergenic , excellent for those who have allergies to dogs. You should keep them groomed to keep their coat and skin healthy. It also serves as a good bonding time. Poo Shis can inherit various types of fur because the parent dogs have different types of fur. They often have a thick, wavy coat. It is best to use a slicker brush to comb through their coats at least once a week. You should also use a nail clipper to keep their nails trimmed down and comfortable for them when they walk. Often, their hybridization is genetically stronger and less disposed to those diseases. However, there are still things that you should watch out for, especially if their parents have a disease history. Minor Conditions. Perhaps you've been looking at Shiba Inu mixes and heard the word "Poo-Shi" thrown around here and there. A Poo-Shi, is a quick slurring of the breeds Poodle and Shiba Inu, generally used by designer dog "breeders" to make their mixed breed pups stand out. This article is meant to give you a quick "crash course" in designer dogs, their plusses and their drawbacks, and look at what exactly a "Poo-Shi" is. Btw, they also go by the name of Shiba Doodles! Bred for hunting small prey, these dogs generally have a high level of prey drive. Shiba Inu are also well known for their sassy attitudes and "primitive" dog behaviors. These spicy little dogs won't take anything lying down and will often ignore owners, even ones that they respect. While some Shiba Inus are biddable to an extent, you won't find them beating out Golden Retrievers for obedience awards. But what about Poodles? With Poodles, it mostly depends on their size. Toy and miniature Poodles have had some of their gundog capabilities bred out of them, but standard Poodles are a completely different story. If your Shiba Doodles mix is of toy or miniature origin, the pup has a chance of lowering it's prey drive. It may still bark at squirrels and rip apart squeaky toys, but it's less likely to make a hunting buddy. Both breeds end up with a hefty dose of aggression, depending on the Poodle being thrown in. With the standard Poodle's background in bird dog retrieval and hunting and the Shiba Inu's background in small game, a Shiba Inu Poodle mix will have a high prey drive. Always ensure that they are securely leashed when out. As a pet, any of the three Poodles and Shiba Inu crosses will make excellent home companions for years to come. They will be fiery and tell you their opinions, but for those with a deep love of primitive dog attitudes, the Poodle addition should just help them get that across all the more. However, coats may get a Poodle's wave or even some curl, giving them an attractive look. Coloration will depend on the genetic background of the parents. Stature will highly depend on which Poodle the Shiba Inu was mixed with and these mixes may run the gamut from 8 to 10 pounds, or up to 30 to 40 pounds. Are Shiba Doodles Hypoallergenic? There's really no such thing as a hypoallergenic dog, though certain dogs affect allergy sufferers a bit less. Since Shiba Doodles have the coat of a poodle and a Shiba Inu, there's a good chance that Shiba Doodles won't affect allergy sufferers as much as some other breeds. This means that slobbery breeds such as Bulldogs and Basset Hounds are much more likely to cause allergy symptoms compared to to other dogs Health Issues of Shiba Doodles Both Poodles and Shiba Inus enjoy relatively good health. Between the two breeds, eye issues seem to be the most prevalent health concern. Glaucoma and cataracts are already prevalent issues within the Shiba Inu bred. With Poodles also carrying cataract and retinal issues, make sure that your pup's parents have had the full range of eye testing. Other health issues to slow your dog down are joint and ligament issues. Patellar luxation and hip dysplasia are both becoming more and more common in all varieties of Poodle and within the Shiba Inu community. Hip dysplasia happens when the hip joint is not well seated within the curve of the pelvis that it should settle in. Patellar luxation is when the kneecap slides within it's groove. Both of these issues will likely require surgery in the long run. The Issues With Designer Dogs There is an enormous debate upon the problems with designer dogs, with many "breeders" noting "hybrid vigor". So, "hybrid vigor" is the attempt to allay this by introducing different gene pools to each other. To give a clearer picture: imagine that you only have a bathtub half full of acid, half full of water to drink from. You drain half of the bathtub in front of you and open the tap to pour in more water. Attempts at "hybrid vigor" are trying to dilute concentrated gene pools precisely like this. Sometimes it works. Sometimes it doesn't. A lot of designer dogs are poorly created in puppy mill environments. Parents go untested for their breed's various inherited diseases because the "breeders" do not understand that "hybrid vigor" is a crack shot at best. Most designer dog "breeders" have only an elementary level of genetic understanding. Some puppies may luck out and get some of that "hybrid vigor". But plenty more will just end up with a double dose of their parental breeds' poor genetics. It depends on your preferences. A Shiba Doodle will be a bright, playful dog that should be very willing to please, with a stubborn streak. It will have a fantastic attitude and probably not be the greatest dog around cats and other small pets without careful training. If you desire a Shiba Doodle, we do want to state that we do not condone designer dog breeding, nor the purchase of designer dog puppies. We do however, always advocate for rescuing a dog in need. These will help you gain some insights into this relatively rare hybrid Poo-Shi dog. Shiba Inu If you do a Google search for Shiba Inu , you will probably get more information about the Shiba Inu cryptocurrency than the dog breed. Shiba Inus are a small-to-medium-sized Japanese dog breed. The Shiba Inu is often described as a dog that looks like a fox, acts like a cat, but loves like a dog! The word Inu means dog in Japanese. They were originally used as hunting companions to flush out the small game from burrows and bushes. Today, Shiba are one of the most popular dog breeds in Japan. Many Shiba owners have dedicated YouTube channels or Instagram pages for their Inus and they have become internet sensations. Poodles Poodles are one of the smartest dog breeds in the world. They too are an ancient dog breed having either Roman or Egyptian dogs in their ancestry. This may be due to their water-resistant, curly coats which gave them an advantage in the water. They could easily retrieve waterfowl for their hunters. Poodles were also used as circus dogs in France. This is because they were considered incredibly easy to train and learned tricks quickly. Poodles are considered one of the best breeds to cross with other dog breeds. The PooShi is one such creation that combines the smartness of two ancient dog breeds both having easy trainability and loving and loyal dispositions. Shibapoos are not recognised by the AKC or other major canine clubs across the world. However, some breeders register their Shibadoodles with hybrid clubs such as International Canine Hybrid Club. How Big will a Pooshi Dog Get? Height and Weight of Shibadoodles As with any designer or a hybrid dog breed, you cannot predict the height and weight of a Poo-Shi. The Poo Shi Shiba Inu Poodle mix full-grown size depends greatly on the parent dogs and complex canine genetics. Most importantly, they depend on the Poodle used in the breeding. In general, you can expect your Poo-Shi dog to measure between inches cm and weigh around lb. The coat of Shiba doodle will also not be standard. Most Pooshis have a scraggly, curly coat in colours like apricot, white, beige, cream, black, black-and-cream, red, red-sesame, merle, etc. This brings us to the question — Are Pooshis hypoallergenic? You can always speak to your Poo-shi breeder if you want a hypoallergenic Shiba doodle. Experienced breeders understand canine genetics and can breed specifically for low-shedding, low-dander-producing dogs. Embark and Animal Genetics in the USA, can test for furnishings teddy bear-type doodle coat , shedding genes and coat texture curly, fleece or smooth. The best oodle breeders utilise genetic testing to inform the decisions made in their breeding programs. For example, a Shibadoodle that is bred back with a Poodle will result in an F1b Pooshi which has a greater percentage of Poodle genes. This could yield a relatively low-shedding dog. The personality of a Shiba Inu-Poodle mix can be described as independent and intelligent, stubborn and tough, active with lots of energy, escape artists, and drama queens — both male and female Pooshis. The PooShi is an extremely intelligent and problem-solving dog. It is an observer and will watch and observe its environment and patterns. Then it will try and use this knowledge to get what it wants! These little dogs are known to be quite the Houdini — they are escape artists so always make sure you secure your yard or keep your pet in a crate or on a leash. Raising a Shiba Poo is like raising a child — you can shower your love on your dog but when it comes to discipline, you have to be strict without using negative reinforcement methods or punishment. Instead, use praise and treats, and be patient when training this smart dog. Consistency is especially important while training a Shiba poo. Train your pet a little bit every day and soon you will see results. Also, all family members need to be on board when it comes to household rules. And your dog will never stop begging once it has learned it! This can be very challenging during training, but with consistency and patience, you can overcome these challenges too. Thankfully, Shibapoos learn quickly because they inherit their smartness from both their parent breeds. Pooshis get these traits from both parent dogs. Like the Shiba Inu breed, Pooshis are extremely confident. This trait combined with their smartness helps them quickly assess a situation and figure out how best to use what is at hand to accomplish their goal. For families with kids, Shibapoos make excellent companions. They are playful and loving. And despite their small sizes, they make excellent watchdogs as well. They are alert and attentive and will immediately go and investigate the source of noise in their territory. On the downside, Pooshis are quite the barkers. They might bark while playing and also when they sense an intruder or if they are angry. As can be seen, Pooshis need quite a lot of work, but they are definitely worth the time and effort. This can result in people returning or abandoning their pups. Where to Buy a Poo-Shi from? The price of a Shiba Inu mix Poodle is not standardised. It can vary from city to city and breeder to breeder. The price is higher if the dog is trained or if it comes from top bloodlines. If the parent dogs are show-winners and champion dogs, fully health tested or if the breeder has imported their dogs from Japan, then also the Pooshi puppy price will be a lot higher. As such, Pooshis are relatively rare, so they tend to be expensive. What to Feed a Shibapoo? These dogs are prone to rapid weight gain and obesity can cause a number of health issues for them. Select the right food after consulting your dog breeder or vet nutritionist. The food you choose should be free from additives and fillers. If possible, you can also opt to feed your dog a raw dog food diet. Some Pooshis with the Poodle-like coat will need a ton of grooming to prevent skin issues. The alert and active Boxer Previously known as Deutscher Boxers, Boxers are playful, energetic dogs that are recognized for their flat-faced heads and blunt muzzles, which give them a unique look. The typical weight of Boxers is around 55 to 70 pounds 25 to 32 kg. Males can grow up to 23 to 25 inches 58 to 64 cm , while females are between 21 to 23 inches 53 to 58 cm in height. Boxer As a purebred, the Boxer is recognized by the American Kennel Club AKC and is prized as an affectionate companion, a great guard dog, and an excellent family pet. Due to their short and silky coat, they are temperature-sensitive. But, with, proper care, they have a life expectancy of 11 to 14 years. A Labrador Retriever or Lab is a medium-sized, high-energy purebred that can grow to weigh 80 pounds 36 kg. How big will a Lab Boxer mix get? They can grow up to 23 to 25 inches 58 to 63 cm and can weigh up to pounds 45 kg when fully grown. If you want a smaller pet of the same breed, choose a female that only weighs around 50 to 65 pounds 22 to 30 kg. Most Boxer Labs have a mix of any of the two colors such as black and white or black and tan. This intelligent, friendly, and loyal companion is also quite the social butterfly. They are great service dogs, too! Just keep in mind, they easily get separation anxiety if you leave them alone for too long. They need training and socialization at a young age. If not, they can grow to be stubborn. You can start training your puppy as soon as you take it home at 8 weeks old. Boxadors are easy to train because of their Labrador and Boxer parentage. Remember to always use positive reinforcement to make good behavior stick! Boxadors are no couch potatoes. A Boxer Lab mix needs regular physical activity since one of its parents the Labrador has a gene mutation that leads to obesity. Some owners walk their Boxadors thrice a day, but a 30 to minute walk twice a day is good enough. Keep them happy by providing them plenty of space to run around and play with you or on their own. This crossbreed can get depressed if you leave it alone for long periods and it will make sure everyone knows about its frustration by whining or howling. They want to make you happy. Boxadors are a playful bunch and would do anything to please their humans. TLC goes a long way! Think you can manage its high energy level and training needs? This hybrid has a fairly manageable coat, but this Boxer Lab mix is not hypoallergenic, as it sheds a moderate amount of fur. The fur usually comes off during spring and autumn, so, during these seasons, you have to brush their coat every day. Even after the shedding season, maintain that glossy hair by brushing it once a week. Brushing their pearly whites once or twice a week. Cleaning their ears two times a month. Checking the fur under their eyes at least twice a week. Trimming those pretty nails twice a month or when needed. The proper diet Just like Labradors, the Boxador loves to eat! Control their feeding by giving them two meals, one in the morning and one in the evening. Boxadors can be fed with around 4 to 5 cups of dry kibble per day. You can also include some tasty snacks and treats. You can reduce the risk of bloat by using slow-feeder bowls and avoiding giving your pup large meals. Lab Boxer Mix health issues Even if health issues can be passed on to Boxadors by their parent breeds, keep in mind that the chances of your hybrid getting these illnesses are quite low. The Lab Boxer mix has a lifespan of 12 to 15 years, after all. These are some of the health issues the Boxer Lab mix may be prone to: Hypothyroidism. If your dog has this problem, its heart must work harder to pump blood. This is a hereditary problem common in the Boxer parent. Boxers with this health issue should not be bred from. Cardiomyopathy Dilated cardiomyopathy is another heart condition that is common in large breed dogs, like the Boxer and Labrador. In this health issue, heart muscle degeneration leads to a larger-than-normal heart. This can lead to overall heart failure. Some studies have recently been investigating a link between this issue and diet, but more research is needed to determine whether there is a causal link. Health testing is available for this problem. Hip and Elbow Dysplasia This is another health problem known to affect many large breeds. Hip or elbow dysplasia can be extremely painful for affected dogs. Make sure your breeder only breeds from dogs with good hip scores. Bloat Canine bloat is also known as gastric dilatation volvulus. Bloat can be fatal, so you must act quickly if your dog shows any symptoms associated. Brachycephaly Brachycephalic dogs are those with flat faces. The Boxer parent is affected by this conformation issue. Boxador puppies may inherit this shorter snout. This can lead to breathing and temperature regulation problems, as well as poor dental health and eye issues. When picking your puppy, make sure that they have a full muzzle and that the Boxer parent has a prominent nose. Symptoms can include hair loss, flaky skin, weight gain, sluggishness, seizures, and more. Dogs with this issue may have to take medication regularly for the rest of their life. Cancer Of course cancer is a broad term. Different types of cancer can affect the Boxador parent breeds. So, make sure your breeder is not breeding from dogs with a history of cancer. Degenerative Myelopathy This is a progressive spinal cord disorder. Dogs with degenerative myelopathy will experience slow paralysis of their back legs and rear. In some dogs, eventually their front legs will also be affected. Exercise Induced Collapse This problem is exactly as it sounds. Affected dogs will collapse after short bursts of extreme exercise. Symptoms can include wobbliness or poor coordination. In worst cases, this problem can be fatal. General Health of Cross Breeds Not only do purebred dogs like Labs and Boxers have some serious potential health issues to contend with, some of these issues are the same. Mixed breed dogs will still be vulnerable to these issues if their parents have them. So, choose reputable breeders that health test parent dogs before breeding for the best chance at a healthy puppy. General Care Boxadors should be fed with a high quality dog food designed for large breeds. They need regular exercise and plenty of social interaction and play to stay happy and healthy. Check their nails and ears when grooming them. Dental health is a particular issue for Boxador dogs, especially those with shorter muzzles. So, keep a keen eye on their teeth. What is the Boxador Life Expectancy? It is widely reported that Boxadors live 12 to 15 years. But, at the moment there are no studies that confirm this figure. What we do know is that on average Labs live 12 years and Boxers live 10 years. Cross bred dogs tend to live longer than their parents, but this is not guaranteed. The best way to make sure your Boxer Lab mix lives as long as possible is to find him from a reputable breeder who has used health as a primary goal. Both Boxers and Labs have great reputations as family pets. They are both exuberant, active breeds, so you can expect the same from a mix between them. Because of this, Boxadors may be better suited to families with children who are a little older. This breed needs a family that is very active and that has plenty of time to dedicate to training and socialization. They are a cross between a Golden Retriever and a Labrador Retriever. The goal was to combine these two highly popular breeds to create a dog that exhibits the best traits from both of them. A mixed dog breed can take after one parent breed more than the other or any combination of traits from the parent breeds. This can result in some variation among individual puppies. But, overall, a Golden Labrador is friendly, intelligent, energetic, and affectionate. Although this mixed breed is not recognized by the American Kennel Club, they are recognized by other notable organizations like the American Canine Hybrid Club and more. They usually do well with small pets within the family that they have been raised with or socialized around, but likely will still have the urge to chase other animals while out and about. They also tend to be open and friendly with strangers. After all, strangers are just more people to give them attention and play with them. Chocolate Labrador Retrievers may be high-energy dogs, but they are also highly adaptable. They will thrive in homes with fenced yards where they can run freely. Chocolate Labs also have a water-resistant double coat that makes them well-suited for most habitable climates. As with most dogs, they are sensitive to heat. Although they can handle some cold and will likely love to play in the snow, they are not a snow dog breed and may need to bundle up while out on walks in areas with harsher winters. Potential health concerns to be aware of in a Chocolate Labrador Retriever can include hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia , progressive retinal atrophy, cataracts, hereditary myopathy, and heart disease. There is also a condition with a genetic link called exercise-induced collapse EIC , which can occur in young adult Labradors. Carriers of this can be identified by DNA tests and it is advised that breeders test for this and avoid practices that would produce the disease. Good breeding practices make a big difference in the health of puppies and reputable breeders will screen their dogs to avoid passing preventable issues to puppies. Make sure you ask about the health and genetic history of both parents and about any health tests or clearances that have been done. As a large, deep-chested dog breed, Labrador Retrievers are at a higher risk for bloat. Bloat in dogs can be dangerous and can quickly become fatal if the stomach flips gastric torsion. Chocolate Labrador Retrievers are incredible companions and are also one of the best dog breeds for first-time owners. Their energy can make them a handful at times, but their intelligence, adaptability, patience with people, and eagerness to please make them easy to train. The trend among Labrador owners in the show dog community in the s was to breed as pale of a color as possible, and these paler Labs remained popular for decades. Thankfully, during that same period, darker colored Labs were more popular in the working dog community. These were shades like the dark yellow Labs and the now highly sought-after Red Fox Labradors. The majority of Fox Red Labrador Retrievers we see today are descendants of this pool of working gun dogs. Their distinctive red color is what makes Fox Red Labs stand out as beautiful dogs that have been increasing in popularity in recent years all over the world. The Lab was a working dog used during hunting pursuits and the hunting fraternity heavily favored the Black Labrador over all other colors. And so red labs were relatively uncommon. But in a reversal of the trend today, in the early days of the breed the more common shades of yellow that existed were dark yellow to fox red. The lighter shades of yellow and cream that we think of as normal today, were actually quite rare. In fact, the first ever registered yellow was a dark golden color. However, through the mid to late s, lighter shades of yellow and cream became more fashionable and breeders sought to selectively breed for these colors. This is mostly my opinion and not concrete fact, but the two theories I have on why the lighter colors of Yellow Labradors became more common are: Firstly, during the early years of the breed the darker yellows and reds were more common. So when a pale cream or very light yellow was born, it seemed more exotic, rarer and hence more desirable. So breeders started to selectively breed for these colors and hence less and less reds were born. Secondly, since the middle s, a famous brand of British toilet paper, Andrex has used a pale Yellow Labrador in their television adverts. Their adverts went on to be shown in over countries for over 35 years. Most colors centered on a cream to light golden color. The dark yellows and reds fell out of fashion. But in the last 10 or 15 years, the range of available shades in the Yellow Labrador have once again widened. They stood out among the crowd and so they were more desired. This caused breeders to try to match the demand and selectively breed for lighter colors. Due to a lack of popularity of the dark red coat colors, it all but disappeared. But this new-found rarity in turn made the darker red Labs more desirable. So now there are many breeders who are selectively breeding to try to obtain litters of reds to meet the demand of people who want the rarer color. Things have turned full circle. Controversy Around The Red And Darker Yellow Shades Being uncommon in comparison to the black, paler yellow and chocolate shades does make some people question the red Labradors pedigree. They question whether in fact they are a pure bred Labrador or not? However, unlike the so-called Silver Labrador Retriever that is surrounded by accusations of outcrossing Labradors with Weimaraners to introduce the diluted coat color to the breed, no such controversy surrounds the darker colors of Yellow and Red Labradors. They are a genuine, pure bred Labrador, with a history going back to the earliest days of the breed. Another controversy is the fact that Fox Red Labrador breeders charge a far higher price than breeders do for the more traditional colors of the breed. They advertise their dogs as being a rare breed and charge a premium. There is some truth in this, but this controversy also follows many other breeds and colors of dogs. Are Breeders of Reds Irresponsible? There is some evidence to support this in a very few small cases, but there are some highly responsible breeders too and I think the good do outnumber the bad. Many people have asked if different colored Labs have different temperaments. Is the Fox Red Lab temperament different from the other Lab colors? In our experience, no a Fox Red lab has the same loving, friendly temperament as black, yellow, and chocolate Labs. Fox red Labrador breeders Labs come in three colors, yellow, chocolate and black. As well as some pale, dilute forms of those colors. The red fox Lab, or fox red Lab, is a dark coated variety of the yellow Labrador Retriever. Breeders are selecting darker red Labrador Retrievers to breed from as they become more popular companions than paler yellow Labs. Sometimes known as the ruby Labrador or fox red Lab, these are smart, energetic dogs are best suited to active owners. Yet at one time, almost all Labradors were black. This was partly due to nature, and partly due to a little human interference. Chocolate and yellow Labs were both harder to breed for and less desirable. Horrifically, yellow or brown puppies were often culled at birth! Yet all three colors of Labrador Retriever, black, chocolate and yellow including the red shade , share the same origins or history. Bred to be hunting companions, with bags of intelligence and a friendly disposition. In recent years, these rarer colors are becoming more popular. Which leads to more people selectively breeding for them. And therefore more dogs being born with these coats. Red Fox English Lab vs American Lab The trend in Labrador coat colors swung to paler and paler colors in the s, and remained that way for decades. Especially among the dog showing community. Fortunately a pool of dark yellow or fox red Labs remained popular in the working sporting dog community. Possibly because a pale yellow dog, being far too easy for wildfowl to spot, is not an ideal hunting companion. American Labs are slimmer built, with less stocky heads and chests. They have a stronger prey drive, are a little less forward and playful. Even today you are unlikely to find a Red Labrador with a show background. Any dog advertised as an English fox red Labrador will probably have a pedigree that is a mix of American and English dogs. It is largely from this pool of working retrievers that we now have the stunning fox red Labrador Retrievers that we see today. And because they are often the American Lab type rather than English Lab type, they are often taller and more athletic in appearance than the paler yellow Labs. And if you live in the USA, you may have to do plenty of detective work to find one at all. You may have more luck looking for an American Lab type, from working lines. They are very intelligent and trainable, with loyal, loving personalities. Although they have the usual Lab friendliness, they can also be a little more nervous and wary of strangers and slightly high strung. Lots of socialization and plenty of attention will keep these dogs happy. Coupled with lots of exercise, and both mental and physical activities to keep them busy. Presumably because breeders are selecting for the popular deeper coat color in order to increase puppy sales. There is a lot of pressure on breeders to produce certain colors. But a responsible breeder should not choose parents purely on the basis of color. Especially when there are not large numbers of fox reds to choose from. You may be tempted to skip this — but give it a go — it might be easier than you think! Think of a Labrador as a basically black dog. Black is the default color. The black coat is caused by a pair of genes called the B genes Your dog inherits one from his mother and one from his father — in a pair — like this: BB B genes come in big or little versions. So a black dog could have a pair that look like this instead: Bb Little b carries the code necessary to make a brown coat instead of a black one. BUT, big B is dominant and switches off little b. So little b only gets a say, if two of them get together like this: bb, and when that happens, you get a chocolate Lab! This is done by two little e genes. They also come in a pair like this: ee And when they get together they have the amazing power to completely block the genes that cause black and brown coats. A lab with two little ee genes cannot have a brown or a black coat and so the coat color now defaults to yellow. Now we are getting closer to our fox red color. E genes can also be big like this: EE or mixed like this: Ee, but when that happens the big E switches off the little e, and takes away its power. Yellow vs Red Fox Lab Coats A red Lab is a variation of yellow, and every red dog has those two essential little e genes that switch off black and brown. But then it starts to get a little bit more complicated. It centers on a pigment called pheomelanin. And it is controlled by two different sets of genes. The A gene controls the production of the red color. And the C gene controls whether or not it is fully expressed or diluted. This is what makes things a little more complicated. In fact, I am still over-simplifying it a bit. Otherwise the B gene will override them. And you are back to black or brown. Fox Red Lab Breeders Your first step when bringing any Labrador into your life should be to make sure that this is the right time for you to do this. The next step is to find a reputable breeder of Labradors. Finding a nice fox red stud dog and making a list of all his recent matings is often a starting point. You are most unlikely to find a good breeder who only breeds fox reds. This is because color is not the top priority for a responsible breeder. And remember, in most yellow litters there will be a range of shades. Puppies may darken as they grow, or they may not. No breeder can guarantee you the final color of your puppy. Make sure that both parents have good hips, elbows and a clear eye test, as well as a PRA clear certificate. Then your pup will have the best chance of growing up healthy. Red Fox Lab Puppy Prices When it first starts to trend, a fashionably colored dog may be more expensive, and this is still happening to some extent with reds. My advice is to be wary of paying an unusually high price for a red lab puppy. It could indicate that you have found an unscrupulous breeder who may be cutting corners on health or other important matters. The reason I say this is because many respectable breeders will look down on selling puppies of different colors for different prices. In fact paying the same price irrespective of color could mean you have a better breeder, and a healthier pup! This shade gets increasingly darker over the first few weeks. By three weeks old they are starting to look much more like the Labrador you know and love. By the time you take them home at 8 weeks old they will have that lovely fox red shade. Not all the puppies in a litter will be the same shade, even if both of their parents are fox red themselves. They have already had their nails trimmed from our groomer and had a clipper without the shaver, run over their bodies to get them used to being groomed. They are now all puppy pad trained and being slowly introduced to the outdoors. They are being raised in our home, in an open-plan kitchen picture attached so they will be used to household sounds, will have lots of interactions with children and adults from 4 weeks, will be introduced to gentle grooming specifically on their paws and will have lots of friendly vaccinated doggy pals to play with before they go to their new loving homes. Our puppy socialisation and desensitisation activities will also extend to brain training through the use of enrichment toys in a large outdoor secured playpen, paw and ear stroking, hoovers and played sounds of everyday noises at a low level initially such as planes, traffic, road drilling, fireworks, children playing etc. Our aim is to nurture calm, trusting and resilient dogs and ensure the pups are well-socialised and confident about being handled.
