The puppies featured in the Puppy Bowl are from shelters. The production occurred in the New York City area in the fall of , using 47 puppies, [3] [6] while the show featured 58 puppies. A staff of 49 Animal Planet employees and 48 volunteers wrangled the animals, with each puppy assigned a single human overseer. Another 25 kittens were used for the half-time show. Sixty personnel were needed for shooting. Although there is no minimum or maximum limit on how many toys may be in the stadium, show producers say that toys which make the loudest noise or which are sausage-shaped get the most attention. Toys are usually switched out every 20 minutes, and often more frequently. Format[ edit ] The Puppy Bowl consists of a number of puppies playing in a model stadium "GEICO Stadium" with no audience but with canned audience cheering , minimal commentary, and instant replay shots. A "bowl cam" provides shots upwards through the transparent bottom of a special water bowl built into the stadium floor, with a wide-angle lens that allows viewers to watch the puppies drink water and walk through it up close. These numbers include the hidden cameras in the water bowl and toys. Beginning in , it was Animal Planet associate producer Andrew Schechter. When a puppy drags one of the football-shaped toys into the end zone, a "puppy touchdown" is declared. In Puppy Bowl IX, there was a double-touchdown, as puppies with toys raced into each end zone simultaneously. Timeouts are called if the water bowl needs to be refilled, or if the puppies begin to fight a behavior called "unnecessary rrruff-ness". Unique "penalties" called may also include howling, illegal bathing playing in the water bowl , napping on the field, premature watering of the lawn urination , [1] "excessive fertilization" defecation , "neutral bone infraction" neutral zone infraction , and "ineligible retriever downfield" ineligible receiver downfield. The running time of Puppy Bowl V was decreased to minutes including commercials. Jessie Dinh, producer at Discovery Studios, explained the reason for the decrease: "We only did two hours this year so that we had the opportunity to include some other fun elements. Puppies were divided into two teams, Teams "Ruff" and "Fluff", each identifiable by a different colored bandana worn throughout the event. Points were tallied on a scoreboard powered by a hamster running on a wheel. The team with the most points was declared the victor. Most Valuable Puppy Marshall scored a double touchdown. This features kittens playing for 30 minutes with lights , laser pointers , balls of yarn , a scratching post , flint sweepers, and a wide variety of other toys. Puppy Bowl III did not show the cats' departure from the field. The halftime show of Puppy Bowl IV in was only 15 minutes in length. This does not usually work, however, and catnip is distributed over the set to help the kittens be more active and interested in their surroundings. Shots of the puppies at play were green-screened into the windows to make it appear as if the "blimp" was actually hovering over the field. Inside the model of the blimp's control room, hamsters are allowed to play as if they were the crew of the blimp. Beginning in , "bunny cheerleaders" rabbits were shown, as if these animals were on the sidelines. In , the "bunny cheerleaders" were replaced by "chicken cheerleaders" hens and roosters. The "Kiss Cam" returned from through .The tutus, however, did not stay on the animals. A new feature in the game is the "Cute Cam," the slow-mo camera. Additionally, the human "stars" of Animal Planet's reality TV shows were added in as commentators. Another addition is a "special puppy hot tub" a large pan of water in which puppies will relax prior to or after their time on the field. The "experience" included a 15, square feet 1, m2 area where people could play with puppies, a recreation of the Puppy Bowl set, and advertising sponsor areas. A total of 33 shelters from 18 states and the territory of Puerto Rico supplied shelter animals dogs, cats, hamsters, etc. Puppies were divided for the first time into teams, and a hamster-powered scoreboard kept score. Animals with substantial followings on Instagram had images submitted, showing their support for each team as well. Local animal shelters and rescue groups partnered with Animal Planet on these events, during which thousands of animals were adopted. Silkie chickens served as cheerleaders, and a skunk helped referee the show. Puppy Bowl results[ edit ]. Pugs are vetted and some need rehab until placed in forever homes. HELP for a Pug? Pug Dog Breed — All You Need to Know The pug dog was originally bred to be a lap dog and the pooch does very well with human companionship. This breed of dog has an incredible sense of humor that is they are sometimes referred to as the clowns of the dog world. Pugs can happily thrive anywhere whether, in the city or in the country. They can happily live as a pack of other dogs or alone. Pug owners swear by their dogs and consider them the best house dogs. Pugs, however, do not thrive in very hot or very cold conditions. Pug Dogs What some call ugly others might call irresistably cute! The Pug has turned in to one of the most popular dogs in the United States, find out more about this lovable breed. Pugs come in different colors such as silver with a black face mask or apricot-fawn with a black muzzle. They can also come as all black. The expressions that a pug dog can have include curiosity, happiness, surprise, and others. All of these expressions make the pug dog a very adorable and lovable dog. According to the legend, a pug with these markings carried good fortune. Pugs also love attention and they become heartsick if they are ignored. The ears of a pug are black and very smooth with a velvety feel. The pug also has a very tightly curled tail. Pugs are also known to have a double coat and they also shed profusely Due to their profuse shedding, you should invest in an excellent vacuum cleaner and a great dog brush. They are also very susceptible to becoming obese thus a pug owner should ensure that they have a balanced diet approved by a vet, and they should not be overfed with snacks. Some people tend to think that pugs do not bark since they are very silent but the truth is that they do bark. However, their barking is not as loud as barks from other dogs. They are also very playful dogs, loyal and affectionate. Short history of the pug dog breed Pugs originally came from China, dating back from the Han dynasty. They were prized by the emperors and led very luxurious lifestyles. Some were even guarded by soldiers. Pug dogs are believed to be one of the three short-nosed dogs bred by the Chinese. These three dogs included the Lo-sze, the Lion dog and the Pekingese. In time, the Chinese began to trade the pugs to the European countries and soon, the pugs became the favorite dogs of the royal households. As the pugs were quickly spreading in Europe, they were given different names. Pugs can thrive well on any quality dog food. They can be fed on manufactured foods as well as well made homemade food that has been approved by the veterinarian. Also, during training Pugs will train very well alongside dog treats, however, you need to be mindful not to overfeed treats. In addition, clean fresh water should be available at all times for the pug to drink. The recommended amount of food that a pug eats will depend on their weight, activity level and vet recommendations. Pugs and other dog breeds are individuals just like us and so there is no universal amount of food that a pug should eat in a day. A highly and young active dog will need more food per day than a senior pug that is not that active. However, if you have to reduce the shedding, regular brushing of the coat would help. Due to their small size, grooming the pug is so much easier than grooming a larger dog breeds. It is also very advisable to do regular nail trimming on a pug since they do not wear down the nails easily as outdoor dogs do. Pugs ears also need regular grooming to ensure that they are clean at all times. The wrinkles are prone to hiding infections and pests. Ensure you regularly clean the folds. Health of the Pug dog breed Pugs are generally healthy but like all animals, they are prone to various diseases. The eyes are a center of attraction, however, due to their flat faces and no nose they can easily injure their eyes or contract different eye infections.

Check out all of our website information pertaining to black and tan Frenchies for sale :. So, French Bulldogs are expensive and rare dogs such as Black and Tan are even more expensive. The downside of not being recognized by the AKC is that these dogs are often mixed with other dogs to get the desired color. And breeders often go to great lengths to deceive others to make extra money. I recommend buying from a reputable breeder and investigating previous buyers to ensure you get the right and healthy dog. French Bulldogs are sensitive dogs and are only meant to be pet dogs, not guard or working dogs. Many upscale food companies use organic beef, duck, turkey, lamb, and seafood in their dishes. Your dog must consume this kind of meat to survive. Your dog cannot consistently consume vegetables because it is a carnivore. Greens are Good You can supplement your diet with veggies or purchase food containing pre-mixed vegetables. Additionally, vegetables offer nutrients that meats frequently lack. Fats could Essential The skin and coat of your Frenchie are kept healthy and shiny by omega-3 fatty acids. Examples of Omega-3 include coconut oil and fish oil. Your veterinarian may suggest a diet that contains the important fatty acid docosahexaenoic acid DHA for your French bulldog puppies. After consulting the vet, you can also add calcium and iron to its diet. Owning a Black and Tan Frenchie might make you ecstatic because they are uncommon and exotic. Black and Tan Frenchies are gentle, mellow, and calm dogs. They are the greatest canines to have in a tiny house or apartment due to their compact bodies and small size. A little dog is the best dog for folks in NYC and other big cities. They shed less and need less care because of their short coats. So these canines are ideal if you tend to be a little lazy. The pedigree of unrecognized dogs is also hard to verify. Frenchies are attention-craving dogs, and they can easily develop separation anxiety. Tips for Taking Care of Black and Tan French Bulldogs Some people believe that the best approach to raising your puppy is unique, which may be true for their circumstances. Nevertheless, the following advice may assist you and your Black and Tan Frenchie in becoming stronger and healthier than any other dog. Give It a Proper Diet French Bulldogs require a diet high in protein but must also be rich in veggies and lipids. Vitamins should also be present in the diet. The absolute minimum that you can and should do for your dog is to treat them for fleas and worms and ensure they received all necessary immunizations while they were still puppies. Exercise for Proper Development Because Frenchies are lazy and enjoy lounging around, you must give your dog at least 30 minutes of exercise daily. Please take a walk once a day. Just be aware of any signs of overheating because Frenchies can quickly become overheated if forced to push themselves excessively. Keeping your French Bulldog mentally and physically active is necessary for keeping it healthy. Obedience and Discipline Training To preserve your power over the puppy, obedience training is necessary. Due to their tenacious nature, Frenchies occasionally try to undermine your authority by disobeying you. You must train your dog in some fundamental manners while remaining strong yet gentle. These fundamental lessons in the discipline are sat, stand, stay, come, and go. Black and Tan French Bulldogs result from recessive genes from both parents, making them rare. On top of that, French Bulldogs require artificial insemination as their anatomy does not allow them to breed naturally. What is the Most Expensive Type of Frenchie? Isabella and Fluffy French Bulldogs are the most expensive and rare Frenchies you can buy. Despite having a few cons to it, the Black and Tan French Bulldogs make some of the best pets, and no there is no doubt why everyone loves them. The moment you bring them into your home, you will notice the joy they bring. This refers to colors which are bred purely for profit and are not done so to enhance the breed in terms of health. They often have health issues It is widely accepted that French Bulldogs have a large number of health concerns. Whilst good breeding can alleviate some of the issues below is a list of common health problems, how to spot them and manage them if possible. Allergies Whilst not unique to Frenchies they are known to suffer more than other breeds. Also it can show through watery eyes, ear infections or sneezing. If you suspect allergy issues it is best to discuss with a vet around possible treatments. This usually results in snoring and noisy breathing. It can however lead to retching, regurgitaion and vomiting and it certainly lowers their tolerance to heat. Skin Fold Dermatitis Whilst we love their wrinkles and skinfolds it can lead to issues within these folds. Ear Infections Due to the shape of the French Bulldog they can have issues in keeping their ears clean. Often these areas become breeding grounds for bacteria. In order to clean them the first rule is not to put anything inside the ear, this often just compacts any dirt within the ear. It is best to use an ear cleaner to break down the dirt. Corneal Ulcers As a result of the eyes standing more predominately on their face they are at risk of eye issues. They can also be born with small amounts of tissue sticking out of their eye. Back and Spine issues Unfortunately it is more common in Frenchies for them to have issues around their back and necks. This often results in back pain and sometimes slipped discs. Often these issues will display themselves later in life and it is best to consult a vet. However they have a very different origin compared to what the name would suggest. They were first popularised in England where smaller Bulldogs were bred to be Toy Bulldogs. They were popular within the English Lace industry which was primarily centred in Nottingham. Their migration across to France followed closely that of the lace industry. This relates to a number of factors most notable their short legs, narrow hips and compact body. Unsurprisingly there are still ways for them to reproduce and this requires breeders to artificially inseminate them. I will spare the details but if you want to know how this process works then read this article. Even the most common of color combinations comes with a hefty price tag attached due to the need for specialised breeding. Post navigation. Choking Can German Shepherd puppies eat raw meat? A German Shepherd puppy can start eating raw meat and bones at about 12 weeks i. Can German Shepherds eat raw chicken? There are numerous debates on whether to feed raw or cooked chicken. Some doctors believe that feeding raw chicken to German Shepherds increases the danger of salmonella infection. Others argue that feeding raw chicken to your dog is completely safe and poses no or minimal chances of salmonella infection. They defend this theory by claiming that dogs and wolves are accustomed to eating raw meat and live happily and healthily in the wild. This breed, however, tolerates all types of chicken and most meat products. You may combine the chicken with some nutritious starches and veggies that are safe for your German Shepherd to eat. Is it safe to give dogs raw bones? Bones pose no health risk to your dog. They are, in fact, incredibly healthy and supply your pet with a lot of nutrients. Bones are rich in calcium and easy to chew and the flesh left on the bones is high in protein and other nutrients. Plus your pet will also get to enjoy the delicious bone marrow inside them. On the other hand, Cooked bones will not harm your pet, but they can easily splinter, which will cause digestive problems. When you initially offer raw chicken to your puppy, you may notice that it causes diarrhea. Benefits of raw meat for dogs While raw food is usually 98 percent digestive, processed foods are just 80 percent digestible. It means that fresh food is more effective in terms of delivering nutrients. Also, many people believe that a fresh meal consisting primarily of raw meat is more representative of what German Shepherds would consume in the wild. Furthermore, dogs that eat raw meat are healthy since their bodies are well adapted to such a diet and less prone to stomach disorders, which are widespread in German Shepherds. However, there are two commonly used methods: 1. It is mainly made up of raw beef, but it also contains additional ingredients such as vegetables and nuts. The aim is to deliver a nutritional value similar to high-quality commercial dog treats , use meals free of preservatives, and have higher absorption rates. The main difference between it and the BARF approach is that it does not need any plants. What raw meat can I feed my German Shepherd? A German Shepherd can eat practically everything when it comes to protein. Any bird meat is safe to eat. These give the protein, fat, and other nutrients required by a German Shepherd. According to most people, raw meats supply all of the nutrients and vitamins that a German Shepherd requires without being cooked. Cooked meat is also safe for your pet and is best when baked or boiled. However, bones should always be served uncooked to avoid splintering, which can cause digestive difficulties. Apart from chicken, your German Shepherd can eat other raw meat bones such as: Beef. Simple Guide To Feeding A Raw Diet Jun 01, Raw diets are controversial diets that are new to many people, but as old as the domesticated dog itself. Raw diets are gaining in popularity at a phenomenal rate. It's now at the point that raw diets can even be found pre-made at not only pet stores, but in the cold food and freezer aisles at grocery stores. Here's what you need to know about making your own. Dogs can get all the nutrition they need from the meat, organ and bones found in prey animals. Check the end of the article for foods to avoid. The PMR gets it's name from the fact that it mimics the contents of a prey animal by their meat, organ and bone content. To make raw feeding simple, keep it simple and relax. Again, keep it simple and relax. Simply feed more when you notice the weight loss. No need to panic. If you're switching from kibble to raw it's normal to be nervous, but exercise common sense and you'll be fine! What about sourcing food to keep things simple? You can buy in bulk at the grocery store, and talk to the butchers that are working in the meat section. You can also visit your local butcher, talk to local farmers; and even contact restaurant supply companies if you have the freezer space or a lot of dogs. Speaking of freezer space, buy a deep freezer. The bigger the better. You'll be glad you have extra space if you come across a good deal on lbs of meat and it'll make raw feeding easier! What should you buy to keep a raw diet simple? Simple answer: Buy what's cheap! Chicken necks and backs are very inexpensive, so are chicken quarters and livers. You can also buy whole chickens and cut them up. Avoid chicken that has "added salt solution. Chicken quarters, thighs, legs and necks with the skin can be fattening. You should trim the fat off if your dog isn't active or is overweight. Raw poultry bones are probably going to be your 1 source of bone. Pork is also cheap, but certain parts like pork bellies are very fatty. Pork necks contain a lot of edible bone. As far as beef goes, there are lots of inexpensive cuts of beef that are mostly for stewing and contain little fat. Cuts like sirloin tri-tip roast, top chuck roast, first cut chuck roast, top blade roast, bottom round roast, chuck shoulder roast and bottom round rump roast are inexpensive and good for the base of your dog's diet. Fish, especially oily fish are very healthy. Feed at least twice a week. Organ can be tricky to source. Many Asian and Latino food markets have organ for sale. You can also try local farms. Many simply throw out organ. If you can't find what you're looking for, many raw diet vendors exist online. You can have frozen organ delivered to your door on ice! Sourcing bone is easy. You'll do it by accident when feeding bony cuts of poultry mostly. Your dog's droppings will be much harder when feeding raw. This often results in healthier anal glands. If your dog's stool is too soft, add more chicken necks, feet, backs, pork necks, ribs etc to solve the issue. If your dog seems to have too much difficulty going, you should cut back on the bone. Now you know what to feed, how much to feed and even where to source your dog food, but here's where we make it really easy. A lot of people meticulously weigh their food and prepackaged and freeze a week or even a month's worth at a time. They balance each meal with an exact amount of meat, organ and bone and it takes hours! The secret is that not every meal has to be balanced. You don't weigh and balance each meal of your own, do you? Your diet balances itself out over time. You can do the same with your dogs raw diet. Instead of a lot of pre-packaging, simply thaw out 3 days worth of meat and bone and 3 days worth of organ. Just mix and match meals and let them balance over time. For example, on Sunday you could put 3 days of frozen chicken quarters, beef chuck, mackerel and calf liver in the fridge to thaw. Then you have meat ready to put in your dog bowls from Monday - Wednesday night. On Wednesday evening, you could put 3 days worth of goat meat, turkey necks and sheep kidney in the fridge to thaw. When it's time to feed on Thursday morning, add a sardine or 2 if canned, make sure they're canned in water , as well as a raw egg with shell to your dog's breakfast. Do the same Thursday, Friday and Saturday morning. That's 3 eggs and sardines from Thursday-Saturday 3 eggs a week are plenty. That also covers every meal from Thursday-Saturday. On Saturday evening, take out another 3 days of food and repeat. Now you're on an easy schedule where you don't have to bag entirely balanced meals for every meal of every day of the week. You've cut down your bagging from 2 or 3 meals a day per month meals prepped to 10 pre-packaged 3 day meals a month! Remember, just relax! I do suggest you start by weighing your food, but after a couple of months you'll be able to eyeball how much food is enough for each of your dogs. If you notice a dog seems to be losing or gaining a little weight, that's no problem. Dogs lose and gain weight very fast. Just feed a little extra, or a little less depending on the circumstances and you'll notice the difference in your dogs weight inside of a few days. Once you master eyeballing the amounts of food to feed and learn to eyeball your dog's weight, scales become unnecessary, which will save you more time and make things that much simpler. To conclude, I said that I would go over items to never feed. Wild pork and bear alike can contain parasites. Farmed pork in the US and Canada are safe. If you procure wild deer, elk, goose, rabbit etc, be sure to freeze it for 3 weeks. Also remember 1. No wild pork and no bear ever. Not even after freezing. It can contain a bacterium that's dangerous to dogs. Canned salmon and mackerel are cooked and perfectly safe. Farmed, raw salmon is also fine and usually comes from Norway. Fish, especially oily fish, are very healthy. Avoid fish with sharp spines and barbs, like catfish, unless they're removed. They are hard and will cause premature wear, or even breakage of the teeth. If the prey animal is bigger than about 10lbs, only feed the spine and ribs to be safe. No leg bones, pelvis etc. Please do your research so that you know what vegetables and fruits are safe to feed! Avoid cow's milk completely and limit cheeses and yogurts. Make sure yogurts are plain. Grinding up meat mixes the germs on the outside of the meat all throughout the ground meat. Also remember that ground meats don't contain bone unless otherwise specified and do not have the added bonus of cleaning teeth. Feed the leanest ground products possible. Thank you for reading. It's impossible to have a full, comprehensive conversation about raw feeding in an article. This is a guideline for those who are interested. I suggest you read books and source information from several authors and friends who feed raw to best educate yourself. Fruit Dairy These diets need to be well balanced to provide your German Shepherd puppy with all of the essential nutrients he needs to thrive. When can I start feeding my German Shepherd puppy raw? It would be ideal to feed raw to your GSD puppy from 12 weeks on, when they finish teething and their permanent dentition is fully developed. This can ensure they have teeth strong enough to engage in active chewing of bones and not just gulping it down. What are the benefits of a raw food diet for German Shepherd puppies? Feeding your German Shepherd puppy a raw food diet simulates the way they would have eaten before domestication. Because of this, there are several benefits you will see if you switch your puppy over to raw food. The gold standard diet is as close to the evolutionary diet of dogs and cats as is practically possible, is made from fresh frozen raw meaty bones, meats, organ meats, fruits and vegetables, minimally processed by mincing and freezing. The diet contains no added synthetic supplements, additives or preservatives. Raw food cuts out all of the processed food and additives included in commercially produced dog foods. The ingredients you give your pup will be completely under your control and natural. It would be boring, right? Dogs feel the same way. It will be something your dog looks forward to. Not only will he be getting the extra health benefits of raw food, but he will also be getting the excitement and flavor of different types of foods. German Shepherds have double coats. After all, GSDs are work dogs. Unfortunately, GSDs are susceptible to sensitivities. German Shepherds sometimes become allergic to gluten or common animal proteins found in commercial dog foods. They can get itchy, dry, and red skin from allergies either in their environment or diet. Raw food helps eliminate many of the causes of those skin irritations, leading to healthier skin. Also, you are adding many healthy fats and oils through proteins such as fish and with supplements such as nuts that encourage shinier coats. Many cheaper commercial dog foods use grains as a cheap alternative for protein. Carrots are rich in Vitamin A, an antioxidant and protector of white T cells. GSDs are prone to stomach sensitivities, especially to proteins such as beef, lamb, and chicken commonly found in commercial dog foods. By feeding raw, you can offer your dog alternative proteins to keep their stomach happy. This promotes more solid stools and fewer episodes of nausea and diarrhea. You can provide high-quality proteins with nutrient-packed organ meat and whole, raw vegetables packed with vitamins. Many cheap commercial dog foods fill their formulas with low-quality grains with little nutritional value, such as wheat sweepings. Many dogs, especially German Shepherds, can become sensitive to these ingredients, causing stomach issues. What are the drawbacks of a raw food diet for German Shepherd puppies? Coli and Salmonella, handling raw meat still poses a threat for humans. These bacteria can cause you to become very sick 1 to 10 days after exposure with the following symptoms : Stomach cramps Vomiting fever It is important to wash your hands thoroughly after handling raw meat. For a German Shepherd that weighs 65 pounds, here is how much raw food you would need to feed him daily. While some strongly believe that raw feeding is an unsafe way to feed dogs, others consider it extremely beneficial. Can German Shepherds eat raw meat? Yes, absolutely! German Shepherds can definitely eat raw meat. You just need to be aware of how to do it properly to ensure adequate nutrition and to avoid potential hazards. Benefits of Feeding Raw Meat to your German Shepherd According to the Animal Humane Society , a home-cooked and raw food diet is better only because it offers better digestibility. It only means that fresh food is more efficient at providing nutrients. Additionally, many believe that a fresh diet composed mainly of raw meat better mimics what German Shepherds would eat in the wild. Theoretically, because their bodies are adapted for such a diet, dogs that eat raw meat tend to be healthier and less prone to digestive issues, which are common among GSDs. Final Thoughts Whether you use it to replace their dog food or give as an occasional treat, your German Shepherd is very likely to enjoy raw meat. Salmonella Salmonella does not affect dogs in the same way that it affects people. A large percentage of healthy dogs will test positive for salmonella in their systems regardless of the food that they eat. It is a normal part of their GI flora and so they naturally excrete it in their feces and saliva. The majority of human salmonella cases come from ingestion and handling of dry foods and treats, and not from handling uncooked meats as popularly thought. So the real salmonella threat is to you, and not to your dog. And regardless of the food that you feed your dog, there is a good chance that it is already carrying salmonella. The people most affected by this are those who have compromised immune systems. So just remember to handle any raw meat that you prepare for your dog in the same manner that you would handle raw meat that you feed to your family. In addition to properly rinsing raw meat, be sure to disinfect counters, bowls, and any other surfaces that the raw meat may come into contact with. Also, according to the FDA , you should wash your hands for at least 20 seconds with soap and warm water after handling any raw meat and also the same before eating. Trichinosis This is a parasitic disease that is most often caused by eating undercooked pig or wild game infected with larval trichinella a parasitic worm. These larvae may, however, be killed off by heating, freezing, or irradiating the meat. While you can of course heat or freeze meat at home, irradiation is carried out in government facilities with x-rays, gamma rays, and electron beams. To effectively kill off trichinella by freezing, you must freeze raw pork meat for 3 weeks before you feed it to your dog. Toxoplasmosis This is caused by the protozoa called toxoplasma gondii. Though the vast majority of people infected with Toxoplasmosis will never show any symptoms if they have healthy immune systems. People most at risk are pregnant women and those with compromised immune systems. Infection from these protozoa can happen when raw meat is consumed, most often venison, pork, lamb, oysters, clams, and mussels. Infection can also occur from infected feces. Infection can also accidentally occur when not washing hands after gardening or eating unwashed fruits and vegetables from a garden. The risk of Toxoplasmosis can be avoided by freezing raw meat for 24 hours and again remembering to thoroughly disinfect all surfaces that raw meat may have come into contact with. Salmon Poisoning This can occur when feeding a dog salmon or any other anadromous fish fish that swim upstream to spawn , and it works like this: The fish harbors a parasite Nanophyetus salmincola , and in turn, this parasite harbors an organism Neorickettsia helminthoeca. The parasite is relatively harmless, but it is the organism that it carries which causes salmon poisoning and produces its harmful effects. And again here, freezing the raw fish meat will inactivate both the parasite and the organism. However, this requires some attention to detail to do properly. To effectively kill these off, salmon must be deep-frozen for at least 7 days. GI Parasites These parasites, which include tapeworms, roundworms, coccidia, and hookworms are often a concern for some people who want to feed their dog raw meat. So just make sure that you are not feeding your dog the GI tract of any animal, and this will ensure that he will not acquire any GI parasites. As long as you are feeding your dog USDA inspected meat, there is no risk of contraction. Food Poisoning Dogs can get food poisoning from eating rancid meat. Spoiled, rancid meat contains endotoxins that will kill just about anything that eats it except scavengers that are built to do this. If it smells off, it likely is off. On the other hand, wolves have been eating raw meat for millions of years. Even though dogs have evolved through the years to become tolerant of starches — corn, wheat, rice, potato, and other products in traditional dog food, their systems have not evolved to do so. There is a big difference between adaptation and evolution. Unlike evolution, adaptation is not a natural process, but instead a forced one. A reasonable alternative to raw meat is commercially manufactured raw dog food. You can feel safe that if you feed your dog raw dog food from a reputable manufacturer that it will not be exposed to the bacteria and parasites discussed above. Manufacturers of raw dog food use several different methods to ensure this: High-Pressure Pasteurization HPP : In this process, meat products are exposed to extremely high pressures. This pressurization inactivates or kills off microbial bacteria which makes the food sterile. Batch testing: Companies that do not want to use pasteurization use this method to test for the presence of harmful bacteria. This is the same method that the USDA uses to inspect the meat that is sold for human consumption. So this means that the meat is tested twice, which is a step above the standards that the USDA uses for humans! Inspecting the health of the herd that the animal came from: Research has shown that well cared for, stress and drug-free livestock shed significantly less harmful bacteria including E. Coli and Salmonella than feedlot cattle, which are often raised in stressful, inhuman conditions. The companies that rely on this method only purchase cattle from farmers who raise their cattle in an ethical, very health-conscious manner. Precautions when introducing your German Shepherd to commercially produced raw food Not all raw commercially available raw dog foods are properly nutritionally balanced. Because of this many dogs develop nutritional imbalances that can be avoided by purchasing a properly balanced food. A food must have a proper balance of: Antioxidants Vitamins Fatty Acids The key takeaway here is to not wait until your German Shepherd develops a nutritional imbalance before you realize the importance of giving him the proper food in the first place. Making this shift too quickly can cause GI problems like diarrhea. Also be aware that you should never mix dry kibble and raw dog food together. This is because the two food sources are metabolized differrently by a dog since raw foods are mostly protein and dry kibble is mostly starch. If all is fine, then increase the frequency of the raw food treats for a few days, and then go for an entire meal replacement. Repeat this process for a few days, and if all remains well then you are safe to switch over entirely from dry kibble to raw dog food. Final Thoughts Feeding your dog raw meat is great for your dog both from a nutritional standpoint as from a mental health point of view. Happy dogs are healthy dogs, and few things make a dog happier than eating raw meat! Just be sure that you take the proper precautions when preparing raw meat for your dog, and just use common sense. It seems many of us can relate to health problems we have encountered while feeding our dogs dried processed dog food. He is 8 years old, so an older dog, and I was told he may have cancer. Knowing this, I knew I had to focus on his bone health and at the same time stay away from all sugars and grains as cancer can feed on both of these. I also make sure to feed Boaz raw organ meats times a week. Organ meats contain nearly every nutrient including B vitamins, folic acid, minerals like phosphorus, iron, copper, magnesium and iodine. They also provide the important fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E and K. Also important is making sure that Boaz is getting vegetables into his diet. Every week in his own batch of broth, I include vegetables with dark leafy greens which he devours. The calcium in his diet is coming from the raw beef and chicken bones and fermented dairy of yogurt and cottage cheese. When feeding dogs bones, make sure they are always raw. Never feed your dog cooked bones of any kind as they can splinter and cause intestinal problems. For his essential fatty acids, I give Boaz a teaspoon every day of fermented cod liver oil and cold pressed flaxseed oil.

We may earn money or products from the companies mentioned in this post. As we all know too well, what we put in our belly has a huge impact on our health, vitality, length and quality of life. They have to strike a fine balance between getting enough nutrients to grow and avoiding an over-abundance that can lead to abnormal growth and disabling conditions. In this article you will learn precisely how to feed your puppy. What they can eat, what they should not, how many times you should feed them each day, basic information on home-made diets and the pros and cons of various commercial dog foods. The majority of Labrador owners feed their puppy kibble. Kibble is ground meal, shaped into dried biscuit-like pellets that are extremely convenient to buy, store and feed, providing everything a puppy needs in one easy to handle product. All the major brands carry a range of kibble and many are specifically formulated to suit the precise needs of puppies. For our recommendations of the best puppy food for labs, please read our article on: The Best Food for Labrador Puppies. Good breeders will supply you with all the information you need to feed your new puppy and you should follow this advice. Puppies almost always get upset tummies during a change of diet. The stress of moving to a new home is enough to deal with without them potentially having tummy upset on top. So try to avoid this. But expect your puppy to get diarrhea after such a sudden change. What Can Puppies Eat? With a bewildering choice of different puppy foods available, what to feed your puppy may not be the easiest decision to make. You Can Feed Your Puppy Kibble Kibble is ground up food, formed into pellets and dried for easy storage and convenience. It is a specially formulated, complete and balanced diet, containing everything a puppy needs to grow and be healthy. Many people believe kibble is the best way to feed a puppy, with it being so easy to buy, store and feed while containing every nutrient a puppy needs in the right proportions. Wet, Complete Puppy Foods Are An Option As the name suggests, complete wet dog food is complete and balanced, meaning nothing should be fed in combination. Everything needed is included in this one food. Complete wet foods come in individual pouches or tins with one pouch or tin containing one single serving. In the main these foods are low in nutrition, contain a high amount of cheap fillers, by-products and water and need mixing with a biscuit to give them some substance and to make them more complete. Because the food is such low quality, you have to feed a lot of it. And what goes in, must come out. This type of feeding was popular decades ago and I do remember my parents feeding our first dogs this way, but most people have moved on from this and are feeding their dogs in better ways now. Raw Food, BARF And Home-Made Diets Raw feeding is a diet that consists of mostly raw meat, edible bones and animal organs, though most practitioners also mix in small portions of fruit, veg and selected other foodstuffs. There are many people feel strongly that this is the best possible way to feed a dog. But I would caution most people that to feed this diet successfully, you need to do A LOT of research, gain a lot of knowledge and truly understand a dogs nutritional needs to make sure they get exactly what they need in the right amounts. Many people wonder if they can feed their puppy human foods, anything found in the fridge or larder. Furthermore, there are many human foods that are toxic to dogs that you should avoid at all costs. Too much of some nutrients can be bad in itself, but also prevent the absorption and use of other nutrients too. So supplementing a balanced diet is a bad thing to do. Can You Give Puppies Milk? Assuming you get your puppy at the recommended 8 weeks, they will have been fully weaned before you bring them home. Many puppies are intolerant of cows milk and drinking it leads to an upset tummy and diarrhea so you would do best to avoid giving your puppy any milk at all. One exception is for very young puppies under 6 weeks of age. When we have newborn puppies at our house we sometimes need to supplement and use Esbilac Milk Supplemen t. However, if you have a very young puppy that you think may need supplementing please first consult with your veterinarian. Are They Necessary? You will likely be feeding your puppy a commercially available complete and balanced dog food, in which case you certainly should not supplement their food. Supplementing this will mean too much of one or more things, making it unbalanced which can actually lead to harm. But an excess amount of calcium in the diet of a Lab puppy can lead to skeletal development problems. So adding a calcium supplement to an already complete diet can actually do more harm than good. There may also be times your vet advises you to do so. But if feeding raw, you should know more about nutrition than I do. This is a hard question to answer and sadly I cannot give you a definite quantity or weight to feed them each day. Puppies grow at different rates, some are more active than others and there can be large differences between metabolisms too. However… The biggest determining factor is how concentrated the nutrients and calories are in the brand of food you feed them. High quality foods are nutrient rich and give a puppy all they need from quite small amounts of food. But cheaper brands are full of low quality and nutritionally empty fillers that mean a puppy needs considerably more to get what they need. Start by feeding your puppy according to the guidelines on the label of the puppy food you buy for them. Then see how their body develops. Puppies should not be fat! But at the other end of the scale if they start to look and feel a little slim, up their portion sizes a little. The guidelines on the food you buy are just that…guidelines. You might also be interested in:. Remember, Labs do not have a natural food intake regulator so you will need to monitor them with portion control. Using a cheaper brand is a poor option at half the price. You will use twice as much and you will have to clean up larger amounts of waste in your yard. To allow for an accurate control of body weight and growth rate, this amount of food can be dispensed over 3 meals per day. After 5 months of age, the feeding regularity can be reduced to two meals per day with the commensurate increase in food quantity. The amount of food a Labrador puppy requires will increase then level out during first 14 months of their life. At months, their bone density is increasing and their growth plates are set. We do not recommend desexing you pup until at least 3 years of age. This allows for an appropriate development and supply of hormone which in turn produces proper bone, muscle and vital organ development. Table foods dispensed randomly to dogs are not nutritionally balanced. We do not offer our dogs table food at all. There will be no problems if you are feeding a puppy with a homemade diet but it should be prepared from prescribed recipes that are nutritionally complete and balanced. Diets consisting of an unplanned and indiscriminate mixture of human foods particularly including carbohydrates will likely result in obesity and even dietary-induced disease. When you Lab reaches 14months of age, it should be given an adult food that contains less energy and calcium. This will decrease the risk of obesity and orthopaedic conditions. And do not feed them coffee or tea as they can contain caffeine, theobromine, and theophylline. These toxic substances can dangerously affect the heart and nervous system. Onions, garlic, raisins and grapes can be severely toxic in labradors. Raw meat is potential source of parasites and pathogenic bacteria for your puppy. Eggs yokes are an excellent source of protein. Raw eggs contain an enzyme called avidin, which decreases the absorption of biotin a B vitamin. This can, in extreme cease, lead to skin and coat problems. Liver contains higher levels of protein, fats, carbohydrates, minerals and vitamins. Raw liver can be a source of parasites and pathogenic bacteria. Excessive amounts of liver can cause Vitamin A toxicity. Raw bone chewing will control tartar buildup on a pups teeth. However, bone chewing can cause intestinal blockages and perforations. Never use cooked bones. Commercial Puppy Foods Most commercial puppy foods are designated for small, medium, large and giant breeds. This designation can be found on the label. Puppies of medium sized breeds are less than '25 kg fully grown adult body weight'. A full grown and lean Labrador will usually weigh between 25kg and 45kg. We feed our dogs at the 'lower' level of the recommended range. The 'Hills Body Fat Index' is a very helpful body shape indicator. The same food as the bitch You should feed your new puppy with the same brand of food as the bitch received during lactation. From 2 weeks into pregnancy, our expectant mothers are fed 'Royal Canin Labrador Puppy' food. Introducing a new brand of food If you are wanting to introduce a new brand of food to your puppy, then blend it gradually with the existing brand in increasing amounts over 3 days. This should prevent food rejection and any kind of gastric upset. It is best to choose a diet designed for large breed puppies. Selected commercial feeds should contain a limited percentage of filler compounds. Pawlinglabs uses Royal Canin Labrador as our preferred option. Growing labradors Labrador pups have a very steep growth curve, and their total daily energy needs do increase as they grow. Calculate the amount of puppy food that will satisfy that need. The feeding guidelines on the commercial pet food label provides an estimated quantity of feed for several different ranges in body size. These instructions will give you an estimated starting point for the particular brand. Medium or large? Medium breeds should be transitioned to an adult diet by 12 months of age, while large breeds between 14 — 18 months of age. Mature female labradors are medium and weight approx kg. Mature males are large and weight approx kg. Their calcium and energy content should not exceed that level recommended by a registered nutritionalist. Sound skeletal development Sound skeletal development in labradors is produced by the interaction of genetic, environmental, and nutritional factors. The phase prior to weaning and the growth phase, up to 14 months are integral to sound skeletal structure. Don't take your young pup on extended distance walks and certainly not 'running' until at least 18mths of age. You must avoid stairs and slippery floors for the same reasons. Their growth plates are set at about mths of age. Feeding and Overfeeding Large breeds like Labradors are the most susceptible to skeletal disease. Feed consumption, nutrients balance and feeding methods influence our ability to produce sound skeletal development and eliminate skeletal disease. Appropriate food consumption and nutrition plays a critical role in bone development. Overfeeding will not increase or benefit the growth rate of young and growing labrador puppies. And it does not correlate with optimal adult size. However, it does increase the risk of skeletal abnormalities. The vast majority of skeletal disorders occur in large breeds including labradors and they are associated with consumption of table food and an excessive intake of a commercial food and supplementation. The large breeds like labradors are limited in their ability to cope with an excess of minerals such as calcium. The result of this over consumption is abnormal bone development and skeletal disorders. Nutritional management will be critical in the to prevention of bone and joint diseases. In most cases, skeletal disease can prevented by appropriate quantities of feed in a regulated diet with optimal nutrient levels. A complete and balanced commercial diet is essential. Dietary deficiencies will be of little concern if your labrador pup is fed with a complete and balanced commercial diet. Brands like Eukanuba and Royal Canin are specifically formulated for young, growing labradors. There is real potential for harm by over feeding and giving additional supplementation. Housing safety and activity levels Housing safety and activity levels are under the your influence. Nutrition is also under your control and it is the single most important factor affecting the development of the musculoskeletal system. Energy, protein, and calcium are the critical nutritional components affecting skeletal development. However, if they are given in excess, they will be detrimental to normal bone and joint growth. Most pet owners feed commercial dog food. These prepared diets are balanced and complete. Pawling Chocolate and Black Labradors. Different dietary needs are crucial, especially if they display allergy symptoms. Avoid all types of human foods. From 6 months onwards , you can give your puppy 2 meals daily of 2 cups of dog food per meal. Is This A Problem? Yes, this is a major problem! Fat dogs are adorable but also extremely unhealthy. An adult labrador retriever should weigh at most pounds. Labs that are fatter than this stand at the risk of obesity, arthritis , and other lifelong diseases. Refrain from feeding your labrador too many dog treats. Onions and garlic: surprisingly, anything in the onion and garlic family is incredibly toxic to dogs. Meat with bones: if not chewed properly, sharp edges can rupture the throat, stomach lining, intestines, and other parts of the digestive tract. Other human foods and beverages to avoid giving your dog are alcohol, sugar, citric fruits, and anything with caffeine. Your labrador retriever should weigh between 55 to 70 pounds at full adulthood. Male labs are heavier than female labs, so they can fall on either side of the optimal weight spectrum. Some healthy treats for your labrador retriever are cut fruits and vegetables. Carrots, celery, cucumber, beetroot, apples, bananas, and berries strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, cranberries, etc. Dogs also love peanut butter! Veggies dipped in peanut butter also make a great snack for your dog. This is entirely up to you as dog owners. If you have the time and patience to cook meals for your dog, go for it. Store-bought food is easier and is filled with the right nutritional requirements for your lab puppy. On the other hand, with the right recipe, home-cooked food works, too. What Should I Do? A dog growling at you when you go near his food bowl is most commonly a trauma response or a way to protect his food. We often see this with rescues. House training your lab puppy is equally important to avoid food aggression. Labrador Retrievers get piddly after their meals. Dog owners must take out their lab puppy as frequently as they eat sometimes even more often to let their energy out and adult labradors less frequently. A lab puppy needs a ton of exercise. The amount of kibble you should feed your Labrador puppy will vary depending on their age, weight, and activity level. A good rule of thumb is to start with cups of kibble daily and adjust as needed. Best Dog Food For Lab Puppies: The best dog foods for lab puppies include those that are high in protein and low in fillers. The food you should feed a black lab puppy is the same as for any other Labrador puppy. A chocolate lab puppy should be fed the same food as for any other Labrador puppy. A 2-year-old chocolate lab should eat about cups of kibble daily. You should stop feeding puppy food to your Labrador at around months of age. At this point, their growth plates will have closed, and they will no longer need the extra nutrients found in puppy food. Labradors live for years. They start to slow down around 7 and may develop some health problems in their senior years. You should also increase their exercise level. Lab breeders feed their dogs high-quality dog food specifically formulated for large-breed puppies. A lab puppy should drink about 1 ounce of water per pound of body weight daily. This amount may increase as they get older and more active. A labrador needs at least 30 minutes of exercise per day. This can be a combination of walking, running, and playing. Golden labs live for years. Chocolate labs live for years same like labs of any color. Labradors lose their baby teeth between 3 and 6 months of age. You can start to transition your puppy to eating twice a day at around 6 months of age. By the time they are 1 year old, they should eat only once daily. You should stop feeding your large breed puppy food at around 18 months of age. Why Are Labs So Hungry? They are also prone to gaining weight, so keep a close eye on their food intake About The Author Shradha Kabra Shradha is a seasoned writer at Labradorandyou. The source of protein matters when considering a high-quality diet. FATS The rest of the diet should be made up of fats, carbs, and vitamins. Labs need to have a correct protein -to-fat ratio, where protein takes the lead. Dogs tend to convert fat into glucose, so this is an important source of energy. Dogs rely mostly on protein and fats, but carbs are necessary. That said, a low carb diet is best for puppies. However, you still need the right percentage of carbs, since this gives your dog the sensation of being full. These include starches, fibers, and sugars. Try to opt for more complex carbs like starchy grain and veggies because these are easier to digest. Your Lab puppy will thrive when his or her diet includes: Vitamin B12 especially during puppy development , Vitamins A and E, C, Vitamin D, phosphorus, and calcium, Potassium Each of these required vitamins and minerals contributes to a healthy, happy, and energetic puppy. They also help offset issues like obesity. Vitamins A and E are important because they help your dog burn calories and promote eye and skin health. Vitamin D, calcium, and phosphorus, on the other hand, are part of a trifecta that works to strengthen teeth and bones. Potassium is a heart health-preserver. Labs with poor genetics are especially prone to orthopedic issues. Osteoarthritis and hip dysplasia are common health problems for this breed. Glucosamine, an amino-sugar, together with chondroitin sulfate, helps replace and support naturally degrading cartilage during old age. Recently,"grain-free" foods are being championed as a preferred and even high-quality form of dog food. That's, not the whole story. An investigation launched by the FDA revealed that there are potential links between a form of canine heart disease and grain-free foods. So far, researchers have provided an update to this researchers have provided an update to this research staring that the issue may not just be grain-free diets. Grain-free may be part of other trends knows as "BEG"- boutique companies. Puppy diets don't' need to be complicated. They also don't need to include ingredients that humans might enjoy. Enjoyment doesn't necessarily bring any nutritional value to your puppy's development. Keep it simple, using the guidelines for fats, proteins, and carbs above and don't shy away from food with grains in them. It's not their presence that's a problem it's often the ratio. There shouldn't be more carbs or grains than protein. Nor does including only legumes, seeds, lentils, or chickpeas as the primary ingredients make the food more superior. It's perfectly healthy to include complex carb sources like starchy rice and other grains. Grain-free isn't and shouldn't be a qualifying factor for your choice in puppy food. Feeding Your Puppy Kibble Kibble is dried, pelleted food that stores well is easy to eat, and is pre-formulated with everything your puppy needs to thrive and grow in his early developmental months. There are plenty of popular brands that don't measure up to the Snowy Pines standard. That's why it's so vital for you to learn how to read puppy food labels. Puppies should stick with "puppy stage" food, while adults should stick to bags marked "adults. Instead, your dog should have regular bowel movements, allowing them to absorb all the nutrients available. You should also keep in mind that caloric intake is calculated a little differently for puppies. Kibble diets are measured by how many calories the proteins, fats, and carbs represent for each gram. For puppies, this should be 3. Sticking to these ratios will help ensure your kibble choice is a healthy one. It's also important to note that kibble calories are often higher when compared to wet food. If it's high-quality wet food, it won't have as much fat to preserve it, which means fewer calories. You may have to supplement with dry food, especially if you're trying to keep the calories of carbs, proteins, and fats in the right per-gram ratio. How often and what time to feed I will show you the best puppy foods, whether dry, wet, or raw, and look at food safety, together with schedules, quantities and even a handy puppy diet chart. Best Puppy Food for Labs The best Labrador puppy food provides a diet that is nutritious, healthy, and tasty. So, what is the best puppy food for your Lab? Puppy kibble or dried food is the most popular option. Kibble is complete and can give a perfectly balanced diet. Puppy kibble and tinned dog meat combined is another common choice among puppy parents. Feeding your Labrador puppy on home cooked food or on a totally raw diet is also possible. Raw puppy food is growing in popularity, and there are pros and cons to raw feeding your puppy. People often feel very strongly that one way of feeding is better than another, and you can always find evidence to support your view. Dog breeders, veterinarians and even nutritionists have their own strong views. The dire consequences they list for not listening to them can have puppy owners very worried. The truth is that there is no good quality evidence showing that kibble is better for the long term health of your dog, or that raw feeding is better. There are risks and benefits to both, and the main thing is to ensure that your dog has good quality food to eat. Puppy kibble suits some better, and raw puppy food is better for others. Puppy Kibble for your Labrador Puppy food made into pellets is called kibble. An airtight plastic container or tin will do the job, although you should make sure it is food grade quality. Puppy kibble is the best way of feeding your Labrador according to most breeders and your veterinarian is most likely to support this method of feeding. Good puppy kibble will contain every nutrient your Labrador puppy needs in order to grow and remain healthy. The kibble pieces will be tasty, good for keeping teeth healthy, and free from additives that can provoke allergies or stomach problems. Labrador puppy kibble only needs to be fed next to water. Puppy kibble from a reputable manufacturer is intended to be a complete and balanced food. But some owners like to mix in canned dog food or even scraps of raw food with kibble. Your puppy is likely to get an upset stomach or to not have the right balance of nutrition when fed this way. Whether you decide to feed only with kibble or you want to mix it up, pick a good dried food manufacturer and stick with them. Feeding your Labrador puppy raw food has its benefits and drawbacks. One of the downsides is that there is a lot to learn. Here is a link to the articles you need to help you decide whether or not raw feeding is for you: Although I like the raw diet for my dogs, most puppies fed kibble go on to have long and healthy lives. Whatever puppy food you choose, the most important thing is portion control. How Much to Feed your Labrador Puppy? People often tell me how much their puppy weighs, and ask how much puppy food they should give him. Your Labrador is particularly at risk if they grow too quickly. The following diet chart is for kibble fed puppies and does not apply to raw fed pups. It gives you an idea of how much to feed your Labrador puppy Lab Puppy Feeding Chart The Lab puppy feeding chart below is only a very rough guide. The quantity of food you need for your puppy will vary depending on your puppy and on the brand of food you are feeding him. Labrador puppy food must be aimed at medium to large breed dogs. Check the pack carefully and look at the dietary charts. Ideally, you want the optimal protein content and the lowest amount of additives. Part of this always comes down to the cost. The healthiest puppy food is usually the most expensive and may not be affordable for some families. The Cost Of Puppy Food Some puppy food brands are more concentrated than and contain a higher proportion of proteins, essential oils, and other nutrients. The absence of these fillers means that you can often feed lower quantities of more costly food, making them less expensive than they first seem. You might also find that cheaper brands make your puppy poop more due to those extra fillers going straight through him. While some brands are beyond the budget of many families, it is usually good to buy a premium brand. High Quality Brands of Puppy Food Some brands of puppy food have developed a reputation for producing a high quality product and have many devoted supporters, including breeders that have fed them to generations of puppies. The best food for Labrador puppies to consume in their first two to four months of life is milk from their mother. This specialised care is usually left to trained breeders or veterinarians, who are knowledgeable in caring for pups with no mother to nurse from. If you have recently brought a Labrador puppy into your family, they are most likely older than 8 weeks, and so have started to eat solid foods. You can do this by mixing some dry food with specially formulated puppy milk to form a soft mixture. You can feed your puppy this mixture three to four times a day. Over time, you can reduce the amount of milk you include in this mixture, until they are at the point where they are happily eating dry foods. Read on to learn how much you should feed a Labrador puppy as they get older. In their four months living with you, and once they are weaned off milk, Labradors are likely to reach almost half their adult weight. They will reach their full adult weight by the time they are 6 to 7 months old. With this rapid growth can come some risks. Labradors can be susceptible to bone growth disorders, like hip dysplasia and joint abnormalities that can start in puppyhood. Once your Lab puppy hits 6 months, their growth begins to slow down. Once puppyhood is over, you can move to feeding your lab twice a day instead of 3 or 4 times. Labs are still very active in their adolescent years, and so should be fed with this in mind. The transition from puppy food to adult food should happen at around 15 months. This is because, being a breed who grows very quickly, you want to ensure that you are feeding them according to their large breed needs. You need to take special care when considering what you should feed your Labrador puppy, as they require different nutrients compared to their adult counterparts. It is also dangerous for a puppy to overeat. Labradors are large breeds, which means they need plenty of nutrients and calories as they grow to ensure they go from being active puppies to healthy adult dogs. Labrador puppies need to eat food that is high in proteins and fats. Carbohydrates are also essential for supporting your active pup. Aside from nutritionally complete dry puppy food, Labrador puppies can benefit from the extra protein that raw meat can provide them with, such as lean beef, turkey, chicken, or fish. The amount of food you give your Labrador is determined by their weight, energy levels, and age. For most adult Labradors, around 1, to 2, calories per day from high quality food sources is ideal. Female Labradors, who tend to be around 5 to 10 kilos lighter than males, may need less food, as will less active dogs. Dogs who need less food, whether they are less active or simply older, will usually still need around 1, to 1, calories per day. You may want to alter the amount of food you are feeding your Labrador based on how calorically dense their food is. Adult Labradors should be fed twice a day, once in the morning and once in the evening. Their daily allotment of food should be split evenly between these two meals. For most dogs, it is recommended that you exercise your dog before meal times to assist with potty training. However, some dogs may benefit from exercise after eating: especially high energy Labs with a lot of energy to burn off. You should also try to give your Labrador a high quality food that is specially designed for large breeds, especially if they are very active. For example, less active senior dogs will need to eat less food as they will not be burning calories as quickly as a lively little puppy will. Senior dogs may benefit from a higher fibre and lower calorie diet. Your dog may also develop chronic or short term medical conditions that require specially formulated food. For example, Labradors can be particularly susceptible to obesity. As a breed, they tend to be one of the most commonly obese dogs in Australia. This is due to several factors, including a genetic predisposition to unhealthy weight gain and a famously large appetite. However, plenty of Labs suffering from obesity are simply overfed and not getting enough exercise. Choosing a low carb diet is crucial to preventing obesity in your Labrador. If you are unsure about what you should feed your Labrador, you should always consult your vet. They will be able to determine if your dog is suffering from any chronic health issues, and they will be able to create a nutritional plan to help keep your dog healthy and happy for many years to come. Wet food for Labradors is often high in protein and fat, and is better at keeping your dog hydrated than other food sources. Chewing on dry food can be especially good for teething Labrador puppies. A raw diet can be a good option for your Labrador as you have more control over the kinds of food and amount of nutrients your pup is consuming. For this reason, raw diets require a lot more work on your part as an owner. Whatever you decide to feed your Labrador, all dogs need a similar ratio of nutrients in their diets. Different dog breeds will need different kinds of nutrient support as they go through the various stages of their life. It can also be easy to overestimate the amount of food your Labrador needs to stay fit and healthy — especially if they are skilled at begging! You need to make sure that your dog is eating the right amount of food for their breed, their size, and activity level. You should also avoid foods that, while delicious for humans, can be harmful or toxic for dogs. Foods like onions, nuts, alcohol, cooked bones, and artificial sweeteners are commonly included in dinners meant for humans, but can cause serious health issues for your Labrador. No matter how old your Lab is, it is important to keep to a consistent feeding schedule. A feeding schedule can help you keep track of any changes in behaviour around food that might signal illness or physiological stress.
Since Labrador puppies grow quickly it is necessary for them to get a lot of sleep so that they are able to direct their energy towards growing. With that being said, if your Labrador puppy sleeps for more than 20 hours per day and it is lethargic when it is awake then it may be cause for concern and it would be important to take it to a vet. Other reasons why your Labrador puppy might be sleeping a lot Even though it is normal for a Labrador puppy to sleep a lot, it could still be the case that there are other reasons for it sleeping a lot. Additionally, if it is more than 16 weeks old, it should be starting to sleep much less than it used to. If it is still sleeping for more than 14 hours per day then it could be that there is something else contributing to it. If it is also lethargic when awake, it would help to take it to a vet. Below, I will mention a number of possible reasons why your Labrador puppy has been sleeping a lot and what would make them more likely. Hot weather The cause could be due to the weather becoming hotter. This would be more likely if it becomes more tired at midday when it is hot outside and if it can get hot indoors. In this case, it would help to make sure that it has access to lots of shade, water and a cool room. It would also help to avoid taking it out in the sun when it is directly overhead and it would help to exercise it when it is less hot in the morning or evening. Illness It might also be the case that an illness or medical condition has been causing it to sleep a lot. This would be more likely if it has started sleeping more suddenly, if it is fatigued when it is awake and if it has been showing other signs of being ill such as vomiting. If it does seem like illness could be the cause then it would be the best option to take it to a vet. Boredom It might be the case that it has been sleeping more than usual due to being bored. Labradors can be very active as puppies. If they do not have things to stimulate them in their environment then it can cause them to become bored. Labrador adults require a lot of exercise. Generally, it is recommended for them to get an hour of exercise per day. However, the amount that you should be exercising your Labrador puppy will be a lot less since their joints are not fully developed yet. Instead, you can give it exercise, while it is young, by training it to behave the way that you want it to when it is older. It is important to take the time to train it while it is young since it will be easier to change its habits and you will be able to avoid behavioral issues when it gets older. With that being said, you can still give it exercise and it is recommended to give it 5 minutes of exercise per month of age two times per day source. Diet Another possibility is that an issue with its diet has been causing it to become fatigued. This would be even more likely if it suddenly started sleeping more when you changed its diet. You can look at this website to see what you should and should not be feeding your Labrador puppy. It would also help to talk to your vet about what you have been feeding it. Too much exercise It might be the case that your Labrador puppy has been getting a lot of exercise and it has been wearing it out. It is normal for Labrador puppies to be highly active when they are awake and then to fall asleep shortly after being highly active. However, depending on its age, there is a recommended amount that you should be exercising it yourself. According to the Kennel Club , a good rule of thumb is to give your Labrador puppy 5 minutes of exercise two times per day for every month of age. So, if it is 3 months old, it would be recommended to limit its exercise to 15 minutes twice daily. Consider if it suddenly started sleeping a lot more If it has suddenly started sleeping a lot more, it would help to consider what else happened when it first started doing it. If it did then it could be the case that an event-triggered it to start doing it. Possible things that might have happened could include: A change in its diet The weather becoming hotter It got an illness However, if it has started sleeping a lot suddenly, it would be recommended to take it to a vet for expert help. When to be concerned While it is normal for a Labrador puppy to sleep a lot, there are some situations where you should be concerned and take it to a vet. Examples would include: If it started sleeping more suddenly without any apparent cause It is lethargic when awake It has been showing signs of illness What to do about your Labrador puppy sleeping a lot Below are some options you have when dealing with your Labrador puppy sleeping a lot. By doing so you will be able to get expert advice and to rule out the possibility of illness or medical causes. Allow it to sleep as much as it needs to It might be tempting for you to try and get it to stay awake more. However, you should allow it to sleep as much as it wants to. When Labradors are puppies, they are growing rapidly and most of the growth occurs when they are asleep. Make its sleeping environment comfortable It would also help to ensure that it is able to sleep easily. This means that you should ensure that its sleeping environment is reasonably cool, dry and not too bright especially at night. Ensure that its diet is right As mentioned above, it might be the case that there is a problem with its diet. It would also help to ask your vet if you have been feeding it correctly. Give it access to cool and shaded areas If the weather is hot outside then it would be important to give it lots of access to cool and shaded areas so that it can stay out of the sun. It would also help to exercise it when the sun is not directly overhead. Do Labradors Sleep Through the Night? There may be a lot of causes, though, if your dog sleeps more than 15 hours each day. Age, breed, amount of activity, and environmental circumstances are just a few of the multiple variables that affect how much sleep your dog needs. If your dog appears to be sleeping more than usual, analyze any environmental changes. Minor lifestyle adjustments for your dog might have a major impact on how they sleep. You might be curious as to why your Lab sleeps so much. If you have a smaller dog, it could seem like they are sleeping more or more than you are used to. The following are some reasons for changes in the sleeping pattern of your Labrador. Diet If your pooch has begun sleeping more since changing its food, nutritional variations could be the problem. Large dogs like Labradors typically sleep for 12 to 14 hours each day source. Your Labrador will probably sleep even longer if it is a puppy or an older dog. Weather It can be the case that the hot temperature has been making you feel exhausted if the weather has gotten hotter where you are. In this situation, providing it with access to shaded areas, water, and a cool room throughout the day would be beneficial. It would also be beneficial to walk it in the early morning or late evening when it is cooler. Aside from that, it would be beneficial to keep it out of the sun as much as possible to prevent heatstroke. Illness It may have been sleeping more recently due to a disease. That would be more likely if it had more recently started to sleep and had been displaying other symptoms of illness, such as weariness while up. It would be better to take it to the vet in this situation. Boredom Its tendency to sleep more might be because of boredom and lack of stimulation. A lot of daily activity is suggested for the breed of Labradors. It is often advised that they exercise for an hour each day. Click here to learn more. Activity Level Does your dog like frequent strolls across the park? Or does your dog prefer to sit on the couch? The American Kennel Club AKC estimates that a puppy that is highly active when awake may require up to 18 to 20 hours of sleep each day. Less active dogs, on the other hand, often sleep for just around 14 hours daily. No matter how active your dog is, the best strategy is to spread their exercise throughout the day. Dogs often want to snooze frequently to rejuvenate. Aging Puppies and senior dogs typically sleep even more. Puppies sleep more because they are quickly growing and because sleep is when their muscles are rebuilt. Older dogs sleep more because getting around takes more energy and they become weary more quickly. Click here to find out. Since they are young, being separated from their mother may make them feel lonely and afraid. Throughout the night, they could also need to feed or go outside a few times. Before assuming that the dog can sleep through the night, you will need to allow them some time to acclimate. They will eventually quit complaining and keeping you up at night so they can sleep through the night like everyone else. But you might be wondering when this is going to happen for those new pet owners who are sick of waking up in the middle of the night. When a Labrador Retriever reaches the age of around four months, pet owners may anticipate that they will begin to sleep through the night. They have reached an age where they can successfully sleep through the night and are less likely to need to get up in the middle of the night to obtain attention or for any other reason. The simpler it is to encourage the puppy to accomplish this milestone, the more of a foundation you provide for them early on. Each puppy may react differently to being in your house, and some may take a little longer to sleep through the night. As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. Saint Bernard Bullmastiff These breeds tend to sleep a bit more and could spend up to 18 hours sleeping daily. So, if you have one of these, you may not need to worry too much about them sleeping. The following reasons might be why they are sleeping too much. Anxiety, Boredom, and Stress Dogs tend to be like human beings in this aspect. When your Labrador goes through some psychological issues or stress and anxiety, it will tend to sleep more. When your dog becomes excessively lazy, there is a good chance that they are feeling anxious or stressed. One of the best ways to combat this is to help the dog by putting it on an active routine full of activities that stimulate them. This way, you will enhance their physical and mental condition. They Might Have Thyroxine Deficiency Commonly known as hypothyroidism, this condition tends to affect older dogs. Even though this condition often affects older dogs, it can sometimes be found in much younger dogs, especially in breeds such as Labradors. The most common reason is that it has some blood-sucking parasites within its body. These parasites might include: Roundworms Whipworms Tapeworms Another reason your dog might be sleeping too much: is they are not getting enough restful sleep. The remedy here is simple — a high-quality dog bed. Establish a predictable nighttime routine with your dog. It is essential to create a relaxed environment before bedtime. Offer toys, cuddle time, and other calming activities for minutes before sleeping. Ensure your dog is well exercised during the day so they are more likely to settle in for the night. Play fetch, walk around the block, or take them to the dog park to will help ensure they are tired and ready to sleep at night. Try using melatonin as a natural sleep aid for your pup if they seem to be having trouble winding down at night. Melatonin can help their sleep and get them to settle in faster. Be sure to consult your veterinarian before giving your dog any supplements. Make sure you have established healthy sleep habits yourself! Try going to bed at a reasonable hour and stick to it! Be consistent and limit the amount of water your pup drinks before bed. Try to avoid too much activity before bed. A game of fetch or tug-of-war can increase energy levels and make it harder for them to settle down. Sweet dreams! Post header Skip post header Is my puppy sleeping too much? Signs your puppy is sleeping too much The best way to tell whether your puppy is getting the right amount of sleep is to observe how they are when they are awake. However, if they are lethargic or disengaged during their waking hours, it may be time to seek advice from your vet. Using our PitPat Dog Activity Monitor, you can see how much time they have spent playing, walking, running and pottering, and see how much rest they are getting, indicating time spent asleep. At this age, they are growing incredibly quickly, experiencing new sounds, sights and smells and playing constantly during their waking hours. They need sleep to help them recoup their energy, process the new things they are seeing and learning, and more. Creating sleep schedules for your puppy The best way to ensure your puppy gets the right amount of sleep is to stick to clear sleep routines, especially in their first few months at home with you. Follow our step-by-step guide to create a healthy routine: Designate an area for your puppy that is comfortable and calm. Make sure the whole family, especially children, understand that your puppy should not be disturbed in this area. A dog crate with a comfy bed inside and blankets draped over the top to stop light from getting in is ideal. Familiarise your puppy with this area. Give them treats whilst there to make sure they have positive associations with it. Have set times for waking up in the morning and going to bed at night, and avoid letting your puppy sleep too much in the hours before bedtime. Allocate time for naps throughout the day — such as after a vigorous play session or a walk. Your puppy will begin to expect the quiet time and gladly bed down. As your puppy gets older, adjust your routine to suit them. How can I check how much sleep my puppy is getting? You can use a PitPat to check how much activity your dog is getting, as well as how much time they spend resting. Sleep is just one of the many things you need to monitor as a pet parent to a young dog. Where do dogs sleep? Dog sleep patterns are fascinating things. They have what is called polyphasic sleep, where they have periods of wake and sleep that occur during both the day and the night. And help you to understand the changes that occur in different stages of their lives, including when they are unwell. How Long Do Dogs Sleep? Dogs have a sleep pattern known as polyphasic. This means that they have multiple periods of sleep scattered throughout the day and night. A feature that they share with many other mammals. Dogs have better night vision than we do. So their ancestors could hunt both by day and by night, if necessary. In fact, hunting at night may have given them some advantages. It is easier to creep up on your victim under the cover of darkness. Dog Sleep Patterns Sleeping all night had no advantage for dogs, so dogs did not evolve a natural tendency to sleep for a single long stretch of time like we do. Instead, they acquired the useful ability to get as much sleep as possible, often in short stretches, whenever there is nothing much going on. You may have noticed that your dog wakes up instantly and is ready for action right away. And living with humans means that most dogs do learn to sleep the night away without disturbing their human family. Though they may wake and move around briefly during this period of time. If your dog is not sleeping through the night and disturbing your sleep, consider whether he is getting enough daytime activity and stimulation. Dogs have retained their ability to sleep whenever life gets dull. Studies of guard dogs have shown that dogs are not disadvantaged by being woken up frequently or working in changing shifts. They simply sleep when they get the chance. But how many hours sleep does a dog need during each 24 hour period? Dogs naturally sleep for longer periods of time each day than people do. But just like humans, sleep needs vary among individual dogs. Sleep needs also vary among different dog breeds. Adult Labradors will sleep for well over half of every 24 hours, and puppies under four months old may sleep as much as 20 hours a day. The reason for all this sleeping may have to do with a special type of sleep called rapid eye movement, or REM, sleep during which dreaming takes place. Do Dogs Dream? Dogs certainly appear to dream in the same way that we do. And their brains behave in a similar way to ours during the sleep cycle. REM sleep is just one phase of the sleep cycle that both dogs and humans experience. A study published in showed that REM or dreaming sleep decreases as dogs get older. So it looks as though puppies dream more than adult dogs. Sometimes when fast asleep, your dog will make twitching and running movements with his paws, and some dogs will give little yips and barks. This is a normal part of deep REM or dreaming sleep. Studies have also shown that if the part of the brain that de-activates movement during sleep is removed from a dog, the sleeping dog will actually carry out the behaviors that he is dreaming about. Let Sleeping Dogs Lie! We know that in humans, REM sleep is important. Being deprived of REM sleep can cause unpleasant effects, and there is no reason to think that dogs are any different. It is important to allow your dog to sleep deeply when he wants to and to not interrupt his sleep when he starts dreaming. Some veterinary specialists speculate that dogs sleep more than humans because their REM sleep is often interrupted due to their ability to wake easily and quickly and be ready for action. Because of that wakefulness, dogs need more periods of sleep in which to get an adequate amount of REM sleep. If you are worried that your dog may be ill because he is sleeping so much, ask yourself what has changed. Is he sleeping a lot more than he was just last week? Or has he always slept this much? Is he bright and bouncy when he is awake? Does he have a good appetite? Or does he seem lethargic or uninterested in food? Excessive sleeping in a dog that is eating well and full of energy when awake is unlikely to have any significance. And some elderly dogs tend to sleep more than they did when they were young. Make a Special Sleeping Space Your Labrador, like all dogs, is able to awaken quickly from sleep and be ready for action, whenever an opportunity presents itself. However, constantly interrupting his sleep is not a good idea. While many confident dogs will sleep pretty much anywhere, it is important that every dog has his own sleeping space. A place where he can go and relax when he wants to. Even if your dog shares your bed at night, he should still have a bed somewhere in the house that he can call his own. It needs to be somewhere free of drafts and comfortable, preferably lined with a cozy mat or blanket. Elderly Labradors may need thicker padding to support their joints. Orthopedic dog beds can provide extra comfort. It is here, in his special space, that your dog can relax fully and sleep deeply. Dogs naturally sleep for long periods of time, and sleeping a lot is nothing to worry about in a dog that is active, enjoying his food and living life to the fullest. Just like people, dogs need deep REM sleep, and constantly interrupted sleep can be harmful. You can check out crate information here: The benefits of a dog crate. Age of the Dog Dogs may sleep for more than 12 hours a day, usually 14 hours daily sleep. Large dog breeds, Old dogs and Puppies need more sleep, and puppies may sleep up to 18 hours a day, and all this is completely fine. Generally, dogs would sleep the most when they are puppies, and when they are old. Puppies around 4 months up to a year old are only playful, and very active when awake. Breed of Dog The breed of a dog determines its size, activities, and also how quickly it gets old. All of these factors can affect the dog's requirement of sleep. A smaller dog breed usually takes longer to reach old age and requires less sleep. They can spend up to 18 hours a day sleeping. Stress, Anxiety, and Boredom A dog that is going through psychological difficulties such as anxiety, stress, and boredom would sleep a lot. If your dog is stressed or feeling anxious, you will notice them becoming lethargic and they will doze off often. Activity Level Dogs that have tasks to hold their attention will spend most of the day activities, dedicated to completing those tasks. The number of sleep dogs needs also depends on what they are bred to do. Thyroxine Deficiency This is also called hypothyroidism. The under-secretion of thyroxine normally reduces chemical processes occurring within the cells of the body, especially those related to metabolism, consequently, the dog looks unhealthy. Older dogs are prone to hypothyroidism, in rare cases can be found in younger dogs too. The most susceptible of these breeds are Labradors, Great Danes, dachshunds, Doberman pinschers, among others. Diabetes The inability of the body to produce insulin in the amount needed by the body can affect the dog greatly due to the risk of hyperglycemia. Certain breeds are more prone to diabetes than others. Bacterial Infection Leptospirosis This is an infection caused by bacteria that is highly contagious. Dogs can get leptospirosis through direct contact with urine from other dogs or even human infected. It can also be transmitted easily through water, soil ETC. It's most common in warm climates. Viral Infection Parvovirus This is a highly contagious viral illness. Majorly found in puppies before adolescence - between six weeks and six months old. The best way to nip this fatal infection is early puppy vaccination. Like the parvovirus, it can be prevented with early vaccination 9. Anemia Anemia is a medical condition of reduced blood in dogs. The reduction in the red blood cell of a dog is due to the presence of bloodsucking parasites in the dog's body. These worms are easily detected in dog stool. Hookworms can also be transferred from a mother to a puppy. But, dogs can get them from soil that is infested, too. They are typically easy to identify and can be seen in the dog stool. Poisoning An untrained dog would eat anything if it feels is palatable. Also, a dog owner may decide to pamper it with something from the human food that is harmful to it. Avocados, spices, alcohol and even coffee are poisonous. The effect can be fatal. In case your dog eats something poisonous, see the vet immediately. Here is how your dog usually sleeps. In the picture, you will have a clear idea about it. Conclusion Regardless of your dog's sleeping routine, you can always organize your dog's daily activities to a routine that you feel is best for them. Your dogs may take some time, but will definitely adjust to the new routine. Also, always go to the veterinary first when you notice a sudden change in the behavior of your dog before making assumptions.
I am familiar with common and uncommon health problems they may face so when my boyfriend and I decided we were ready to adopt our own english puppy finding a reputable breeder that prioritizes health was most important to us. Erica and Mitch of Bruiser Bulldogs are just that. They are experienced, ethical and quality breeders. I was referred to them by my friend that I trust after I saw their gorgeous healthy puppy. Our Puppy Primrose is the light of our lives! Bruisers was there to assist us every step of the way. We would highly recommend Bruisers Bulldogs to anyone looking for their own happy, healthy pup! Leah H. We were lucky to have come across Bruiser Bulldogs and even more so the fact that they were near our family and hometown made it even better. We have had Clementine Callie for four months now, and she is a wonderful dog. Her personality is amazing, and I think part of it is breeding and the other part is Erika and her family lovingly raising the puppies in their home with plenty of attention and snuggles. I also was impressed that, rather than send the puppies out right at 8 weeks, Erika kept ours for a few extra weeks because she was tiny and not read to leave her mom yet. It's that care that differentiates Bruisers from other breeders. Emily R. Erica was easy to work with thru the entire process from application to adopting and now beyond as we host our new family member, Chief. Her on-call support and willingness to provide open, honest advice to all of our questions and concerns continues to be appreciated. We would highly recommend Bruiser Bulldogs to anyone looking for an English Bulldog to join their family. Elizabeth W. Lady L. They are experienced, responsive and knowledgeable about all things bulldog related. They went above and beyond for us and are truly dedicated to all of their pups! We love our little girl so much and would recommend Bruiser to anyone looking for a healthy beautiful bully. Jonathan E. Erica and Mitch are trustworthy, excellent communicators, fair, passionate, and produce the best bulldogs. We were at the top of the waiting list for months and Erica reached out every litter to see if we were finally ready for a bulldog. When we were, she was very easy to work with. Her knowledge on bulldogs is outstanding. We had many questions on the process and she always knew what was best for the puppy. We've had Penny formerly Blair for two months and she is very healthy, energetic, playful, and sweet. She is great with other people and dogs. We are so happy with our pup. When we are ready for bulldog 2, we will only consider Bruiser Bulldogs. Mitch C. Bowser was born April and is an integral part of our family. When we were first exploring English Bulldog breeders our biggest concern was the overall health of the dogs. We decided to work with Erica at Bruiser Bulldogs because we liked their focus on improving the breeds breathing abilities and the fact that the puppies are raised within her family environment before coming home with their new owners. Bowser also breaths clearly and our vet was impressed with his overall health from the moment we brought him home. All that said we know English Bulldogs have a predisposition to many health issues and that his current health can not predict the future. With that In mind its important to start with a breeder that open to answer any of your questions as Erica has ours, and that strongly believes in improving the breeds overall health profile. Adam B. My sister ended up finding Bruiser Bulldogs and we knew right away that they were the breeder for us. In September we ended up driving 9 hours to pick up two Bruiser bulldog puppies- one for my husband and I and one for my mom. Jackson and Penelope have been nothing but a joy. They are both very athletic and healthy. They are also HUGE snugglers and always want to be with you. It is an absolute pleasure having these two bullies in our lives! Erica is very knowledgeable about the breed. She is very hands on throughout the process and is just overall a kind and honest person to work with. With all that being said I cannot recommend Bruiser Bulldogs enough! Collyn C. One of the reasons we chose Bruiser Bulldogs was due to the claims about breeding for health. During our first visit at our vet's office, he told us that our pup was one of the healthiest English bulldogs he had ever seen. He is healthy, happy and social. Would recommend to anyone. Christina S. We seen our dog on their website and sent them an Email. Mitch called us and personally walked us through the process and made sure we had the right dog for our family. We couldn't be happier when we picked up our dog Ramsey, Erica made sure we had everything we needed and then some. They are truly amazing people who breed truly amazing dogs! Jim T. The English bulldog also has a flat-looking face, dark and low set eyes, massive and broad jaws, and fleshy cheeks and lips that give it that signature pouty and droopy look. Its short neck, thick shoulders, and barrelled chest, slightly arched back make it one breed that you can easily identify anywhere. Our standard Male English bulldogs are inches and weigh an average of 50 pounds, while the Female English bulldogs weigh about 40 pounds. All our English bulldogs have the finest textured coats and healthiest skin with a variety of colour patterns. Whether you pick a male English bulldog or female English bulldog from us, you can be assured of their wonderful demeanor and gentle disposition. The AKC recognizes over dog breeds and rated the Bulldog as 2 for the best family dog breed. They are incredible family dogs but not the best watch dogs these days. The last nine decades of domestication has turned them into couch potatoes, considerably different from their original genetic breeding that made them perfect for Bull Baiting. Nevertheless they are fantastic at lying on the couch and giving you the stink eye when you disturb their rest. Quick Guide to French Bulldogs French bulldogs were named for their origin story, which says that they were a breed of English toy bulldogs and several unidentified dog breeds. They have distinct features that make them stand out against their English counterparts, such as their pointy, bat ears. Regardless of whether you pick the male french bulldogs or the female French bulldogs , you get a pet that is calm, attentive, attention-loving, and a partner to you and your kids. We are already thinking of another o.These Boxers are amazing. Top of the line Their temperament, their disposition, their health.I have 3 amazing boxer babies from t.Available: Now Hey everyone! Chance was an owner surrender to the animal shelter and was in rough shape. Along with a really nasty skin condition, he was emaciated, had an upper respiratory infection, UTI, GI worms, and heart worms. It was clearly evident he had been neglected and abused. He got treated and well fed with a heaping side of love and care so he could be ready to meet his new family. Even though he had a rough patch, he still loves and want to be loved. He is a true velcro Boxer and want to be with you and cuddle. If he can't cuddle, he will be at your side, waiting for your attention and to look into your soul with those big, chocolate eyes. He wants to do whatever you do and be where you are. He is such a joy to be with. He had a good life before his previous owner, so he was already neutered and knew manners and commands. He is very smart and love treats, so I he picks new things up fast. He is house broken and know to stop something if mom says "uh-uh no" or "leave it" in her firm voice. He doesn'tt chew anything and doesn't counter surf. He only barks at delivery people. Chance can share his people, toys, and his bed, but please let him have his food to himself - he didn't always have food and worries. Chance knows the up and down commands, though he won't get on furniture unless you tell me it is okay each time. He also know sit, stay, come, and shake. Chance walk easy on a leash and loves his walks. He corrects easy with voice commands and gentle pressure on the leash. Sometimes, something fun to chase goes by and he wants to get it. He uses a harness and that helps him learn not to do that. He is already much better at it, except with cats and rabbits - those are too exciting. Some of his favorites include car rides, walks, being outdoors, toys, and cuddling. Part of his past was being crated all day, every day without bathroom breaks, enough food, or play time. So please let him play often, with lots of exercise. Also, Chance can not ever be crated at home, the vet or boarding except in emergencies and with medication. Crating triggers panic attacks for him specifically because of his past. The good thing is, he is such a good boy free roam, you don't need to crate him! Chance very much likes dogs and wants to play, but his foster Boxer brother is really old and can't play. He plays with his people and neighbor dogs. Chance does a good job, but can miss some doggie signals and will need help learning all of them for playtime. He acts like a big puppy, so he could knock down or step on little children with his zoomies. He does love all the rubs, pets, hugs, cuddles, ear smooshing, kisses, and scratches you can dish out. He also is happy to be lifted for a bath, car ride, or vet exam, though. We know some of the abuse in Chance's past was done by a man. He is scared of some men - not all men, but certain actions done by men trigger memories. He is not scared of the women and kids he has met. It took Chance a few days to trust him, but I love my foster dad now. He now trusts that his foster family will only let safe people in the house and will steer wide of men on walks doing any of those scary things like swinging a tool or carrying a load overhead. Chance now enjoys walks and visitors to his house. Interested in me? If so, fill out an application and mention Chance. If you are already approved, just email the adoption coordinator and ask to be added to my list. Please consider a donation to help with Chance's medical care. Welcome to our website! A photo of Rocky, the best Boxer ever, and the one who started it all! We are a family owned operation that breeds champion bloodline AKC Boxer puppies. Our objective is to produce the highest quality puppies, for family pets and companions. We do not offer nor do we guarantee our puppies for show or breeding, instead we would rather they be considered by the people that adopt them as family members, preferably as children! Our love for Boxers came about after we welcomed our first Boxer Rocky into our home. He is an amazing dog, and has been the backbone of our program, providing many of the adult Boxers that we have today. Although he is no longer used for breeding, his amazing personality seems to be what everyone we encounter is looking for in a Boxer. It's no accident that we chose to keep his puppies, they have the same laid-back and relaxed personalities as Rocky. We are vigilant to assure that our puppies are the finest available, we use the best technology to closely monitor the mother and her babies for the first eight weeks. We work with and handle the puppies daily, pampering them helps to create superior emotional health. Three days after birth dew claws are removed and tails are docked by a licensed veterinarian. Vaccinations and deworming is completed utilizing a strict program, all documentation is provided. Pre-crate training begins at six weeks of age. boxer american bulldog mix puppies for sale - Belgian Malinois are intelligent, protective, playful, and energetic. They tend to make great family pets. Should a Belgian Malinois Mix take after this parent, you should be able to expect something similar. A Belgian Malinois is known for their intelligence and prized for their hardworking nature and protective instinct. Their high energy and playful personality means they tend to retain a puppy-like demeanor until they are about three years old. They get along well with children as well as other dogs and pets in the household as long as they are socialized with them. Because of their protective instinct, socialization and training early and often are particularly important. The other parent breed could introduce some potential traits that could affect temperament. So, you do want to ask the other breeder about them. You can also meet the mother dog in person to see what sort of temperament she is modeling for her pups. Belgian Malinois are moderately adaptable dogs. Their high energy tends to make them a better fit for homes with securely fenced yards where they can run. They can adapt to apartment living as long as sufficient time is dedicated to giving them the exercise and training they need. As long as the other parent breed has similar adaptability traits, you should be able to expect the same in a Belgian Malinois Mix. Are mixed-breed dogs healthier than purebred dogs? A mixed-breed dog can sometimes win the genetic lottery and inherit none of the potential health conditions common to either parent breed. At the same time, they could inherit potential conditions common to one parent or both parent breeds. From the Belgian Malinois side, potential health concerns include hip dysplasia, thyroid disease , and progressive retinal atrophy. Reputable breeders will screen their stock to avoid passing issues on to puppies. Although the Belgian Malinois is highly intelligent and picks up on things easily, they are also high-energy dogs with an independent nature and a strong will. This means they are generally not a good fit for first-time dog owners. Puppy training classes are recommended, even for an experienced owner, as these classes often offer opportunities to socialize a puppy. A Belgian Malinois Mix can inherit a coat similar to one parent breed or a coat that is a blend of both, so grooming requirements will be different depending on coat type. Should they inherit a Belgian Malinois coat, they will shed moderately year-round and heavier when seasons change. A weekly brushing and the occasional bath are usually sufficient for this coat. And, you will want to brush them more often during seasonal changes. When checking ears, you are making sure they are clean, dry, and free of debris or pests. Brushing teeth or using an enzyme toothpaste every day is ideal. But, many dog owners skip or overlook this, which is why gum disease is one of the most common health issues in dogs. The Belgian Malinois is a high-energy, athletic dog breed. They need daily walks, playtime, and extra activity every day to stay happy and healthy. They also need a job to do and are good candidates for dog sports like flyball, agility, and more. If the other parent breed is also a high-energy dog breed, then you can expect a Belgian Malinois Mix to be a high-energy dog as well. But, you will still need to be prepared for the potential of a high-energy dog. A Belgian Malinois tends to be inches tall and pounds once fully-grown. The other parent breed could affect this, so you want to make sure you ask the breeder about it. You also want to pay attention to which breed is the mother as this will also affect the size of the puppies, especially in a mixed-breed dog. Belgian Malinois tend to live for years. The other parent breed may affect this slightly, but you can likely expect a similar life span in a Belgian Malinois Mix. Featured Belgian Malinois Mix Article. We chose the Shepinois name for it's simplicity. But they are truly the best of both breeds. They typically have the physical characteristics of the Malinois, they tend to be flat coated with a fawn or mahogany coloring with a a dark overlay. The weight for a female is typically pounds and a male is pds. They have the extreme good health and orthopedics of the malinois as well. They have the athleticism of the Malinois, but not the extreme drive. They are good natured and have the general disposition of a German shepherd. They tend to be a little more level headed like the German shepherd. They are not as overly active as the malinois and they are much easier to live with as a house pet. They also have the tenacity of the malinois and can work for long periods of time without becoming winded. They need daily exercise not only to stay healthy, but to burn off energy. The Shepinois needs exercise daily, not just once a week. The Shepinois is quick to alert you of any strangers or visitors making them excellent, loyal Protection dog. We feel that the overall genetics behind both breeds in very important to making sure this cross turns out the best of both breeds, although the malinois breed does not tend to have hip and elbow problems, we still do the hip and elbow certification on all of our dogs and by doing so we hope to continue to produce the best quality of both breeds as well as this new cross.
