Your bulldog needs a good cleaning. You may look at your bulldog and wonder where to start. There are so many nooks and crannies that are important to clean on your bulldog. From their ears to their tail pocket, you have to be sure they all get clean and dry. All those folds are a breeding ground for bacteria. If bacteria starts to grow in those folds, it can lead to huge problems from infections to skin loss. All of which will be devastating and hard to deal with later. How to wash a bulldog: Wash a bulldog using a gentle shampoo medicated for bulldogs and luke warm water. Step 1: Place a towel or anti-slip mat in the bottom of a bathtub and lift the bulldog into the bathtub. Gently place cotton balls in their ears to avoid splashing water from getting in their ears. Step 4: Thoroughly rinse all the shampoo off your bulldogs body with luke warm water. Step 5: Remove cotton balls and towel dry your bulldog. Be sure any wrinkles on their body are completely dry. Step 6: Clean and dry head, face, face folds, and tail pocket. We have a YouTube Video where I go through the entire process of our daily grooming with daisy. Be sure to check out it out after you have finished our article. Best Shampoo for a Bulldog Picking a shampoo for your bulldog is a little more complicated than you think. Here are some things to consider when picking a shampoo for your bulldog. Their skin is far too sensitive to tolerate it. Always use a shampoo that has been designed for animals. Germicidal properties. Bulldogs carry a lot of germs in those folds that we want to minimize as much as possible. Germicidal shampoo will help with that. Fragrance free. I know we want our bulldogs to smell fresh and clean, especially since bulldogs tend to be on the smelly side, but fragrances should be avoided. Find a shampoo that is pH neutral. If you are looking for a good bulldog shampoo, we recommend this medicated shampoo from PetMD. It kills bacteria and yeast, plus helps heal any skin conditions your pooch my have. Follow with aloe or coconut oil in any dry spots after the bath. First, brush your dog to loosen up any dirt and dry skin. This is also a great time to check your dog for any infections or developing skin problems or fleas and ticks. Tip: Lay down a towel or a non slip mat on the bottom of the bath tub to keep your bulldog from slipping in the bathtub. Use a large bowl or plastic water picture. Fill it up with luke-warm water and pour the water over your dog. Begin by rinsing your bulldog from the front legs and work your way back to get the bulldog wet. The face will take some extra attention to wash, and dogs will start to shake the water off once their head gets wet. Add the shampoo to your hands and lather it up. After you reach the back, work your way forward again. But this time rub the shampoo all around their neck and around the back of their head, right up to the back of their ears. Let the shampoo sit for a few minutes, if your bulldog is patient enough. Rinse the bulldog off again, and be sure all the soap is rinsed off. And your done washing your bulldog! At least your done with the body. Dry off your bulldog with a towel, again being sure to dry all the skin folds they many have in their legs, and dry the tail fold as well. You can also use a blow dryer set on a cool setting to dry their skin as well. Give your dog one last brush to make their coat extra shiny. Plus 9 Tips on What to Look For! After you dry and brush your bulldog, you will want to clean their face. You should clean their face more often than you you bathe a bulldog. The face folds are especially important to clean often. Dirt, food, and grime get in these folds really easily since they have to push the whole face into their food bowl, water, and pretty much anything they want to smell. Baby wipes are great for this task. Just remember to be gentle. Start by wiping down their forehead and fur around the sides of their face. Gently clean around the eyes, and follow the tear fold down their cheeks. Gently lift the fold over their nose. Again this part gets particularly dirty. Pay special attention to the corners of the nose fold. Keep cleaning until the baby wipe comes out clean. Clean in the wrinkles under the chin as well. When everything is cleaned, come back with a soft cloth and dry out all the folds. Tip: A cotton ball is a great tool to dry the nose fold. Simply 1 or 2 cotton balls out and place them in the nose fold. Leave them for about a minute and most of the moisture should be sucked up. Watch for any raw skin and treat it with Vaseline or a mild ointment. Coconut oil is also great for this. Its edible and safe if your dog happens to lick it. Just far enough that they stay in place, but not too far so that you can easily take them back out. This will prevent water from getting in their ears and clogging them up. Using the same wipes, gently clean the inside of their ears. Wipe all around the tail, especially the underside of the tail. Then wipe the skin and fur underneath the tail. It is especially important to clean a bulldogs tail and behind area thoroughly. The skin in the tail pocket rubs a lot when the bulldog is excited and can easily become irritated. Keep in mind that this is not their actual anus, its just a pocket underneath their short pudgy tails. Its really not as gross as it sounds. After you have wiped all around and underneath the tail, follow with a dry cloth and dry the tail pocket thoroughly. Just remember to be gentle, but confident. You are helping them. Thorough washing and cleaning is essential to keep your bulldog healthy. Bulldogs are susceptible to skin issues, more than most breeds because of that squishy face and allergy problems. If you are committed to washing and cleaning your bulldog, you will save yourself from a lot of work and heartache for you and your bulldog later on. This will depend on your bulldog. Every bulldog has different quirks. Maybe your bulldog is especially stinky, or enjoys getting in the dirt. Or perhaps your bulldog has a skin issue and needs special shampoo to help them heal. This is all subjective. Use your best judgement. Their folds however, should be cleaned at least twice a week. Can Bulldogs Clean Themselves? Bulldogs can only clean parts of their body on their own. Because of their anatomy, they are unable to clean their behind. Some bulldog owners even wipe their bulldog every time their bulldog goes to the bathroom. Perhaps selective breeding can change that for future generations. Post Views: 1, Whether he's a short, pudgy meatball or an athletic, rawhide-dominating beast, your bulldog's cleaning regimen is pretty simple. With a bath here and a brush there, he'll always feel and smell as good as he looks. Step 1 Set a bathing schedule of just one bath every month or two. While that wouldn't fly for a human, your pooch can get away with it. He has a short little coat loaded with protective oils, and if you bathe him too often, it'll strip all those good oils off and be bad for his skin. Step 2 Brush out that beautiful coat before bath time. A bulldog needs a good brushing every single day to get rid of dirt and dead hair. While you don't have to brush him before the bath, it'll cut down on the amount of hair he leaves in the tub -- and how much work it takes you to clean all that hair out when you're done. Since his skin is so sensitive, use a brush with soft or rounded bristles. Go against the grain first, then with the grain. This helps you get all the hair and nasties out. Step 3 Fill your tub with warm water, but just a few inches. Your pooch shouldn't need a life jacket or anything -- just give him water up to about knee-level. Make sure that the bathroom itself is plenty warm, so he doesn't catch a chill. Step 4 Get him good and wet before you suds him up, but don't get any water on his face or in his ears. Those are breeding grounds for bacteria when they collect moisture, and you're going to clean his face later anyway, so just don't worry about it right now. Step 5 Massage some mild dog shampoo into your dog's coat. Remember, he has sensitive skin, so be gentle. Those oils that you're washing out of his fur are a natural parasite repellent, so when you wash him, go with a shampoo that has a parasite repellent in the formula. This keeps his skin safe until the oils build back up naturally. Wash him starting at the neck and working your way back to the tail, and don't forget areas like the undercarriage, tuckus and legs. Finally, rinse him off, getting all that soap out of his fur. Step 6 Let your pooch out of the tub and towel him off. While his coat dries off, you have the perfect opportunity to clean out his face, which you should be doing every day anyhow. Dip a cotton swab in warm water, then wipe out the areas gently between his facial folds. Keep doing that with new swabs until they come out clean, then wipe out his folds one more time with a dry cotton swab to catch any extra moisture. More Articles. It is imperative to pay particular attention to those areas. The facial scrub can be used in between baths in order maintain freshness and good hygiene while helping to lift fresh stains. Finishing the Dog: Tools and Finish Grooming This kind, courageous, yet dignified dog should be bathed and groomed on a regular basis. In order to keep the short, smooth coat in prime condition, it is always beneficial to use a hydrating spray following the bath and drying process. This allows the skin and coat to lock in moisture in order to maintain perfect hydration. As a finishing touch, before using a hydrating spray, use a grooming mitt and massage in a circular motion to stimulate the release of natural oils in addition to the removal of any excess loose hairs. Then finish with a hydrating spray. General Health Care Prep work is the foundation of all grooming. Prep work includes ear cleaning, nail trimming, anal glands, and proper dental hygiene. Mastering these skills sets the professional pet stylist apart from the rest. Prep work should be done before every bathing and grooming appointment. All dogs need to have their ears checked and cleaned on a regular basis. Proper nail care is also very important. Long, unsightly nails are uncomfortable for the dog, as well as anyone they might jump on. Long nails also compromise the shape of the foot. Trimming the pads of the foot helps give the dog good traction on different surfaces and can minimize the amount of dirt the dog tracks into the house. It also affords the opportunity to treat and condition the paws from cracks and abrasions. Anal glands should also be checked and expressed if they are full. Some caring pet owners prefer to have the anal glands done by their veterinarian. Good dental hygiene is essential for a healthy pet as well. Nutritional Care In order to maintain healthy skin and coat as well as overall health, it is important to provide good nutrition to your dog through a well-balanced diet, vitamins, and healthy treats. Do they require a lot of grooming? If you are not a fan of cutting hair, then you have made the right selection of choosing a Bulldog. This smooth, short haired bundle of joy requires minimal grooming. However, weekly brushing is recommended. It is important to wash their face and pay particular attention to the wrinkles at least weekly if not twice a week. What is a common problem in bulldogs? The Bulldog is a member of the brachycephalic breed class, meaning that is has a short head and snout. This physical characteristic can lead to a number of possible health challenges, including those of the nose, eyes, teeth, and respiratory system. The nostrils are narrower, and the soft palate longer in the Bulldog, creating the potential for severe breathing problems, especially when the dog is overheated or over excited. Heat is a special concern with this breed, since it is not able to cool itself efficiently through panting, as other breeds do. Some of the major health problems the Bulldog is susceptible to are keratoconjunctivitis sicca KCS , ventricular septal defect, canine hip dysplasia CHD , shoulder luxation, internalized tail, stenotic nares, and elongated soft palate. The Bulldog has also been known to suffer from urethral prolapse or vaginal hyperplasia occasionally. Some minor problems affecting Bulldogs include entropion, cherry eye, elbow dysplasia, patellar luxation, distichiasis, ectropion, and demodicosis. Do Bulldogs shed or cause allergies? It is always quite helpful if your breeder can help mentor you to lead you in the right direction upon entering the wonderful world of dog shows. A great place to start is with the national breed club like the Bulldog of America, www. May we suggest
Although a playful pup sounds endearing, consider how many games of fetch or tag you want to play each day, and whether you have kids or other dogs who can stand in as playmates for the dog. They can cause trouble, do sports like dog agility, or following you everywhere you go — they are dynamic dogs. The Bolonoodle is a smart dog, however, they are often stubborn. Consistency is key when training this breed. Daily training sessions that last minutes any longer can cause disinterest and backfire as far as creating progress are key to helping this breed retain good manners and stay on track. Basic obedience classes may help if you are a first-time dog parent. The Bolonoodle is usually a good fit for beginner dog parents, as long as they refuse to give in to poor behaviors. Without proper stimulation, the Eskipoo will grow bored and frustrated, regardless of how much love there is for them. Additionally, this breed can develop separation anxiety. Dog parents who are frequently home or able to bring pups to work are a good match for this breed, although not a requirement. This breed still craves mental stimulation they can find through training, scentwork activities, and other forms of enrichment. These breeds can be prone to behaviors humans find frustrating, like excessive barking and chewing. When understimulated, they will make it endlessly clear they are bored. Both parent breeds, however, are well known and loved. The Bolognese breed is actually quite an old one, and they can be traced back to at least the 13th century in Italy. Members of the ruling class prized these little lapdogs, and they were bred by both the Gonzaga and Medici families. Bolognese puppies were highly prized, and sometimes given as gifts to visiting royal families and dignitaries. The Poodle is one of the oldest breeds developed specifically for hunting waterfowl. Most historians agree that the Poodle originated in Germany, but developed into their own breed in France. Many believe that the breed is the result of crosses between several European water dogs, including Spanish, Portuguese, French, German, Hungarian, and Russian water dogs. Although the Standard was used for duck hunting, the smaller varieties had use as well — while many kept them as lapdogs, they were also talented truffle hunters. The Poodle Club of America was founded in , but disbanded shortly thereafter. Poodle enthusiasts reestablished the club in .Bolonoodle Size The Bolonoodle is a small-sized mixed breed. They have no breed standard, so their coats may be found in a variation of colors from their combination of parent breeds. They will usually have a thick but curly-haired coat, along with floppy, curly-haired ears. They will often be solid white, brown, or black, but they may appear in other colors. Bolonoodle Personality If the Bolonoodle originates from a responsible breeder, they are often healthy. However, there are some genetic predispositions towards health issues to be aware of with this crossbreed. Crossbreeding, even in designer dog breeds, does reduce the risk of ailments common in purebred dogs. Hip Dysplasia. A high-quality breeder will charge higher prices, but there is a better chance your puppy will be healthy and have fewer problems later in life. The internet allows us to do plenty of research into the breeders before we make any purchases, and there are plenty of breeders available. If your heart is set on adopting, you might get lucky to find a Bolonoodle at a dog shelter. It might take some time, but you can also ask for other mixed breeds that resemble the Bolonoodle. Bolonoodles are smart enough to play games and attempt to trick you into doing what they want. The Bolognese parent is centuries old and was a popular dog as early as the 11th century. The Bolognese parent almost went extinct before it was restored in Europe by a few breeders. They are smart and can be trained to perform tricks but quickly get bored and might move on to other activities. They are always extremely social and insist on being by your side. Are These Dogs Good for Families? They are more than suitable to have around children, and they will provide each other with hours of fun. Parents will enjoy the low maintenance they require. They are extremely entertaining and will often play games with unsuspecting family members. They get along with other pets and are comfortable in small apartments as well as large homes. This breed will also get along with squirrels and rabbits that pass through the yard. We found it just as likely to play jokes on other animals as it is to play them on humans, and sometimes it can be quite entertaining. The food should be of high quality from a reputable brand. It should contain complete nutrition and use high-quality meats and vegetables. Stay away from brands that use a lot of strange ingredients, meat byproducts, and chemical preservatives like BHA. This breed tends to get plenty of exercise playing games and tricks around the home and will require little else. We recommend devoting minutes of your time each day to exercise with your Bolonoodle. The problem is that they quickly become bored and move on to other things , many times before you even get started with your training session. However, you can attempt to train your Bolonoodle by standing in front of your pet with a treat to get its attention. If you are successful and your pet sits down, give him a treat. They will also require frequent trimmings to help keep them looking neat and kept. They will not require frequent bathing, nor do they shed often. Nail trimmings and tooth brushing is also important for a comfortable gait and a healthy mouth. Minor Conditions Hip Dysplasia Hip dysplasia is common in larger dogs, but because the Bolonoodle is predisposed to obesity, it is very common in this breed as well. Hip dysplasia is a deformity of the hip socket that causes the joint not to fit together correctly. Diabetes Just like humans and many other animals can get diabetes, dogs can as well. The risk of getting diabetes is higher in dogs that are overweight, and since the Bolonoodle is predisposed to becoming overweight, this problem is also a concern with this breed. Symptoms include excessive thirst, weight loss, and increased appetite. Serious Conditions Obesity Two things contribute heavily to obesity in the Bolonoodle breed of dog. The first is a lack of exercise. In some cases, children can grow or move away, reducing the exercise available to the dog. The second reason so many Bolonoodle dogs are overweight is overfeeding. Even a few treats is a lot of food to these small dogs Luxating Patella Luxating patella is a condition that causes the kneecap to move out of place. Over time your kneecap can wear out and slip out of place more and more often. This condition will affect the amount of weight your dog can place on the leg and will reduce its mobility. It will also predispose your dog to other injuries like torn ligaments. Male vs Female Both the male and female Bolonoodle stand at the same height and are the same weight. In fact, there are no discernable differences between the two. Some claim that the male exhibits alpha behavior, but we did not witness it in our experience with this breed. If you have learned something new, please share this look at the Bolonoodle on Facebook and Twitter. Featured image credit: parxel, Pixabay Contents. Here is a collage of a few of our customers with their Bolo-Noodles.What is a BoloNoodle? History: This is a cross breed between a registered Bolognese and registered Toy Poodle. From what we have learned, Europeans have been crossing the Bolognese with the Toy Poodle since about the 14th century, but no one ever named the hybrid combination. It was simply referred to as the poor man's Bolognese. This hybrid was recognized as a great family pet in Europe and Jarbeth's Kennel is proud to offer you this opportunity to own one as well. This cross-breed has been around in the USA since about .We know. To our knowledge, Bolo-Noodles are offered exclusively at Jarbeth's Kennel. We were certainly the first. Non-shedding, hypo-allergenic, no doggie odor. Can be any color, but are primarily white or cream. The Bolognese is an all white breed, so any color found in the BoloNoodle will have been inherited from the Poodle parent. Our dogs have produced, white, cream, cream and white; black, black and white, black and tan, black and silver; black-brown and white; blue and white, brown and white; and occasionally a brindle color. All of the colors except true black, fade at the dog matures. For example, a brown dog will turn cream, a dog that looks black at birth may fade to silver or blue because it was not a true black, and a cream and white dog may be all white as an adult. To see examples, click here. The BoloNoodle may have the single layer, straighter Bolognese coat or the thicker, double coat of the Poodle. Nearly all BoloNoodles are built like the Bolognese, sturdy, square built, well muscled and athletic, seeming only to adopt the Poodle colors. The Bolognese is by far the dominate breed. Temperament: Both the Bolognese and Poodle have wonderful temperaments. The BoloNoodle has the best characteristics of both breeds. Both are highly intelligent and loyal. Very versatile as a great family dog or companion dog for a single individual. The go-everywhere, do anything dog. Click here for an extended explanation. All of our customers love their Bolo-Noodles. Size: lbs. Height is up to 12 inches at the shoulder. I said the Bolognese only comes it white. They insisted that they had seen a black Bolognese while traveling in Europe on their honeymoon, that it was a cross with a Toy Poodle and called the poor man's Bolognese. So I did some research and learned that what they had seen was true. And this was exactly what I had been looking for. I had been looking for a unique niche for our enterprise and we came up with the BoloNoodle. A BoloNoodle produced by Jarbeth's Kennel will come with ACHC registration papers, proving that these puppies are from registered, full-blooded breeding stock. Bolonoodle One of the lesser-known Doodles is the Bolonoodle. These dogs are rising to the top of Doodle radar, and for a good reason. They are the perfect small dog for many people. But, do you think you are ready for the responsibility? Today we will talk about all the pros and cons of owning a Bolonoodle. If you can get through this list, you are a perfect match! Origins The Bolonoodle is a hybrid, which means that they are not a pure breed. They are half Bolognese and Half Poodle. Now the Bolognese is the perfect companion dogs from Italy. They have undergone meticulous breeding to make them the ideal pet for any family. The Poodle originated on the French and German border. They are excellent duck hunting dogs and highly intelligent. Their loyalty is what made people realize that they would make great house pets too. So, after careful breeding, the toy and mini-sized Poodles came about. These smaller Poodles are what we use to mix with the Bolognese. The Bolonoodle is a new breed that has only been around since .They are the perfect companion that cares about you and your family. Pros Of Owning A Bolonoodle Now that we see where the Bolonoodle comes from, we can understand how they interact in our lives. First, we will look at all the fantastic qualities that make them an excellent dog to have. Hypoallergenic One of the best aspects of the Bolonoodle is that they are hypoallergenic. Having a low shedding dog is excellent for anyone who has asthma or allergies. A word of caution, though. Hypoallergenic dogs can still cause a reaction for people severely allergic to dogs. Since all dogs produce dander and saliva, there are no dogs that are truly hypoallergenic in this sense. Temperament Your Bolonoodle has the perfect temperament for a lap dog. They are patient and very relaxed. You will notice that not much bothers this Doodle. They enjoy spending time with their owners and playing games. This Doodle is brilliant, but can sometimes get into a little trouble. If they get bored throughout the day, they might get mischievous. Overall they are a loyal and dedicated companion. Training Most people want a dog that is easy to train. And lucky for you, the Bolonoodle is eager to please and loves a challenge. You can use this to your advantage by using a positive reinforcement training method. Doing so will get you a well-behaved dog that learns quickly. Energy Level The Bolonoodle is a very laid back dog. They are considered a moderately active dog that does well with short walks and playtime. Puppies generally have more energy, but you may find as your dog gets older, they need more encouragement. Without daily walks and the right amount of playtime, they become obese, and that brings on a whole other bout of problems. Bolonoodles thrive more off mental stimulation. They love to have something to do at all times. Favorite activities include training, puzzles , chewing, and playing with you. If they do not feel that they are getting enough, they might resort to bad behaviors. These dogs are known for getting into closed areas to make a little trouble. To keep this from happening, you will want to have a wide variety of toys that you rotate every week. Low Barking When most people think of small dogs, they think of a little yappy thing. That is not true of the Bolonoodle. They typically only bark when necessary, and can be taught not to bark at certain things. Size The Bolonoodle has such a large personality in such a small body. The Bolonoodle only gets pounds when fully grown. This size makes them perfect for apartments, along with their low energy and barking. And smaller dogs are cheaper all around to care for. Lifespan Small dogs have longevity like no other. The Bolonoodle has a life expectancy of years. And sometimes they live much more. If you pick a puppy in good health and of impeccable breeding, you may get almost 20years with your best friend. And since Bolonoodles are relatively common, you should be able to find a breeder close to you. That cuts costs more on shipping and visiting your puppy before you bring them home. Since they are so slow to anger, it makes them great for children of all ages. Their size makes them perfect for small toddlers, as large breeds knock over children often. Apartment Friendly We already mentioned that these Doodles are suitable for apartments. But this is a major plus for people who have a hard time finding the perfect apartment dog. Their low barking is something all your neighbors will appreciate. But there are a few things that you should be aware of before getting a Bolonoodle. Grooming The biggest con of owning a Bolonoodle is how much grooming they require. Bolonoodles might have a hypoallergenic coat, but with it comes a lot of maintenance. You will need to have several grooming supplies on hand like combs, brushes, and dematting tools. If your dog has any mats left, then you will need to use the dematting rake. After all the knots are out, then you will need to brush your dog to pick up what little shed there is. Severely matted dogs have an increased risk of yeast, fleas, fungus, and even pain. When you brush them daily, you are making sure that they are staying healthy. Another part of grooming the Bolonoodle is taking them to the salon. Your dog will need to see a professional groomer every weeks for a hair cut. Small size is another plus for this because most groomers charge by size. Nevertheless, it still can get expensive. Mental Stimulation We mentioned before that Bolonoodles need a lot to keep them busy. This can be a con for full-time workers. It can take a lot of trial and error to see what will keep your dog happy while you are away. And it can be expensive trying to keep a proper rotation of toys. At any given point, you want about ten toys for your dog to play freely. Then you will want to have another set of toys that they use when you are gone for hours at a time. These should be brainteasers, interactive toys, or puzzles. And on top of it all, you will want to have enough toys to switch every couple of weeks. Separation Anxiety Keeping your dog from getting bored is only half the worry. The Bolonoodle is notorious for getting separation anxiety and do best with owners that spend a lot of time at home. If you work or travel a lot, a Bolonoodle may not be the right fit for you. If someone is home for the majority of the day, they do wonderfully for a few hours a day alone. But for their mental health , it is best not to get one if you work over 40 hours a week. Health All dog breeds have certain medical conditions they are prone to getting. Bolondoodles are prone to: Obesity. These affectionate, intelligent, and hypoallergenic dogs are popular among families and allergy sufferers. F1 Generation The F1 generation is the first generation of Bolonoodle dogs, resulting from the direct crossbreeding between a Bolognese parent and a Toy Poodle parent. F1 Bolonoodles inherit traits from both of their parent breeds, making them an excellent choice for those looking for a small, affectionate, and intelligent companion dog. F1 Bolonoodles may have a coat type that is a mix between the curly coat of a Poodle and the soft, fluffy coat of the Bolognese, making them suitable for allergy sufferers. These dogs typically require moderate grooming and can adapt well to apartment living. F1B Bolonoodles tend to have a curlier coat, making them even more hypoallergenic than the F1 generation. Due to the increased Poodle genes, these dogs may be slightly more energetic and require more mental stimulation compared to the F1 generation. They are still considered great family pets and are often used as therapy dogs due to their intelligence and affectionate nature. This generation has a more varied genetic makeup, which can result in a wider range of coat types, sizes, and temperaments. Due to this genetic variability, F2 Bolonoodles may have different grooming and exercise requirements than the previous generations. The Bolonoodle, regardless of its generation, is an affectionate, intelligent, and adaptable dog breed that makes a great family pet. With proper care, including obedience training using positive reinforcement, a Bolonoodle can provide years of enjoyment and companionship. Bolonoodle History The Bolonoodle, also known as a Bolopoo and Bolondoodle, is a relatively recent addition to the world of designer dogs, combining the traits of the Bolognese and the Toy Poodle to create a small, affectionate, and intelligent companion. Bolognese dogs were cherished by royal families and considered a symbol of wealth and luxury. Their primary role was to serve as companion dogs to aristocrats and other wealthy individuals. The breed became popular in France during the Industrial Revolution and eventually made its way to the United States. Poodles are highly intelligent and have been bred for various purposes, including hunting, circus performances, and companionship. The Toy Poodle, in particular, was developed as a companion dog for those who preferred smaller breeds. Bolonoodle Emergence The Bolonoodle emerged in the United States in the early 21st century as a mixed-breed dog created to combine the best traits of both the Bolognese and the Toy Poodle. This hybrid dog was developed to offer an affectionate, hypoallergenic companion that is suitable for families and allergy sufferers alike. The Bolonoodle quickly gained popularity due to its small size, low-shedding coat, and friendly temperament. Bolonoodle Appearance The Bolonoodle is a small, attractive dog with a charming appearance that wins over the hearts of many dog lovers. Their size and coat characteristics make them an ideal choice for families and allergy sufferers. Weight and Height Bolonoodles are small dogs, with weights ranging from 6 to 12 pounds and heights between 10 to 12 inches at the shoulder. This compact size makes them suitable for apartment living and easy to transport. The coat can be wavy or curly, resembling a blend of the Bolognese and Toy Poodle parent breeds. Most commonly, Bolonoodles come in cream or white shades, which adds to their elegant and charming appearance. The hypoallergenic nature of their coat makes them a popular choice among allergy sufferers. Body Bolonoodles have a well-proportioned body with a sturdy build. They possess a moderate level of musculature, which contributes to their overall agility and athleticism. Tail The tail of a Bolonoodle is typically medium in length and set high on the body. Ears Bolonoodles have long, floppy ears that hang close to the head. Eyes The eyes of a Bolonoodle are round and dark, conveying an alert and intelligent expression. They are set well apart, giving the dog a friendly and engaging appearance. It is well-proportioned to the head, and the lips are tight and clean, giving the dog a refined look. With their compact size, hypoallergenic coat, and charming features, Bolonoodles are sure to capture the hearts of dog enthusiasts and make wonderful companions for families and individuals alike. Bolonoodle Lifespan On average, a Bolopoo can live anywhere from 12 to 15 years, depending on genetics, diet, exercise, and overall care. With proper care and attention, a Bolopoo can live a long, happy life and bring joy to your household for many years to come. Bolonoodle Ideal Environment The Bolonoodle is a versatile, adaptable dog that can thrive in various living environments. This affectionate and intelligent breed makes a great family pet and can adjust well to different lifestyles. Here are some factors to consider when determining the ideal living environment and conditions for a Bolondoodle. Apartment Living Bolonoodles are small dogs that adapt well to apartment living. Their compact size and moderate energy levels make them suitable for smaller spaces. However, it is essential to provide them with regular exercise and mental stimulation to keep them happy and healthy. Family Life Bolondoodles are excellent family pets due to their affectionate and gentle nature. They get along well with family members of all ages, including young children. However, it is essential to teach children how to interact safely and respectfully with a dog to ensure a positive experience for both the child and the Bolondoodle. Indoor and Outdoor Living Bolondoodles can adapt to both indoor and outdoor living, but they are primarily indoor dogs. They prefer to be close to their family members and do not tolerate extreme weather conditions well. Therefore, it is important to provide them with a comfortable, temperature-controlled environment indoors. Allergy Sufferers One of the key features of the Bolondoodle is its hypoallergenic coat, which makes it an excellent choice for allergy sufferers. However, it is essential to note that no dog is entirely allergen-free, so potential owners with severe allergies should spend time around Bolondoodles before committing to ownership. Socialization Bolonoodles are naturally friendly and sociable, but proper socialization from a young age is crucial for their development. Exposing them to various people, animals, and environments can help ensure that they grow up to be well-adjusted, confident dogs. Bolonoodle Temperament The Bolonoodle dog is an affectionate, intelligent, and friendly breed that inherits its desirable temperament traits from both its Bolognese and Toy Poodle parent breeds. This combination results in a delightful companion that is well-suited to families and individuals alike. Here is an overview of the Bolonoodle temperament. Affectionate and Loving Bolonoodles are known for their loving and affectionate nature. They form strong bonds with their family members and enjoy spending time with them. This lap dog is always eager to snuggle up with its favorite person, making it an ideal companion for those seeking a close and loving relationship with their pet. Intelligent and Trainable Both the Bolognese and Toy Poodle breeds are known for their intelligence, and the Bolonoodle dog is no exception. These dogs are quick learners and are eager to please their owners, making them highly trainable. They respond well to positive reinforcement methods, such as praise and treats, and excel in obedience training. Friendly and Sociable Bolonoodles are naturally friendly and sociable dogs that typically get along well with other pets and people, including children. They enjoy meeting new friends and are generally well-behaved around strangers. Early socialization is crucial for ensuring that Bolonoodles develop into well-rounded, confident adults. Adaptable and Easygoing The Bolonoodle dog is an adaptable breed that can adjust to various living environments and lifestyles. They can happily live in apartments, homes with yards, or even country settings, as long as they receive adequate exercise and mental stimulation. Moderate Energy Level While Bolonoodles are not as high-energy as some larger breeds, they still require daily exercise and mental stimulation to stay happy and healthy. A daily walk or play session, combined with puzzle toys or interactive games, can help keep them engaged and content. Bolonoodle Grooming Proper grooming is essential to maintaining the health and well-being of your Bolopoo. Due to their hypoallergenic coat and moderate grooming requirements, Bolonoodles are relatively low-maintenance dogs. Regular brushing will also help distribute the natural oils in their coat, promoting healthy skin and fur. Use a slicker brush or a comb designed for wavy or curly coats to ensure the best results. Bathing Bolopoos do not require frequent baths; every weeks should suffice. Overbathing can strip the coat of its natural oils, leading to dry skin and potential irritation. Avoid using cotton swabs, as they can damage the delicate structures within the ear canal. Overgrown nails can cause discomfort and can lead to problems with their gait or posture. Brush their teeth at least times per week using a canine toothbrush and dog-specific toothpaste. Regular teeth brushing can prevent tartar buildup, gum disease, and bad breath. Bolonoodle Nutrition Providing your Bolonoodle with proper nutrition is essential for maintaining their overall health and well-being. A well-balanced diet will ensure they have the energy and nutrients necessary for growth, activity, and a healthy life. Here are some key aspects of Bolonoodle nutrition to consider: Calories The caloric needs of a Bolognese Poodle mix will vary depending on factors such as age, activity level, and size. In general, smaller dogs like Bolonoodles have higher caloric requirements per pound of body weight than larger breeds. Consult with your veterinarian to determine the appropriate daily caloric intake for your specific dog. High-quality animal-based protein sources, such as chicken, beef, or fish, should make up a significant portion of their diet. Carbohydrates Carbohydrates provide a source of energy for your Bolonoodle and should be included in their diet in moderate amounts. Choose complex carbohydrates from sources like whole grains, sweet potatoes, or peas, as these provide sustained energy and additional nutrients. Avoid feeding your Bolognese Poodle mix excessive amounts of simple sugars or refined grains, as these can contribute to weight gain and other health issues. Fats Fats are an essential component of a balanced diet, providing energy, essential fatty acids, and aiding in nutrient absorption. Look for high-quality sources of fat, such as fish oil or flaxseed oil, which are rich in omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. These fats can promote skin and coat health, reduce inflammation, and support brain function. How Much to Feed Your Bolonoodle Determining the correct amount of food to feed your Bolognese Poodle mix will depend on factors such as their size, age, activity level, and overall health. It is essential to monitor their weight and body condition to ensure they are receiving an appropriate amount of food. Consult with your veterinarian for personalized feeding recommendations and adjust the portion size as needed to maintain a healthy weight. Bolonoodle Training Training your Bolonoodle is essential for building a strong bond and ensuring they develop into well-behaved and socially adjusted dogs. Their intelligence and eagerness to please make them highly trainable and adaptable. Expose them to various people, animals, and environments to help them develop confidence and adaptability. Proper socialization can prevent behavior issues such as fearfulness, aggression, or separation anxiety. Consistency and patience are key when teaching your dog new commands. Reward-based training methods, such as positive reinforcement, are most effective for Bolonoodles. Housetraining Housetraining is essential to ensure your Bolondoodle understands where to eliminate appropriately. Establish a consistent routine, including taking them out first thing in the morning, after meals, and before bedtime. Praise and reward your Bolonoodle when they eliminate in the designated area to reinforce the desired behavior. Be patient and consistent, as housetraining can take time. Leash Training Leash training is important for maintaining control and safety during walks. Begin by introducing your Bolondoodle to the collar and leash in a controlled environment. Reward them for remaining calm and focused on you. Gradually progress to walking in more distracting environments, always reinforcing good leash manners with praise and treats. Mental Stimulation Bolondoodles are intelligent dogs that thrive when provided with plenty of mental stimulation. Incorporate puzzle toys, scent games, and trick training into their routine to keep their minds sharp and engaged. This can also help prevent boredom-related behavior issues, such as excessive barking or destructive chewing. Bolonoodle Exercise While Bolonoodles are not as high-energy as some larger breeds, they still require regular exercise to maintain their physical and mental well-being. A well-exercised Bolonoodle is less likely to develop behavioral issues and will be a more content and balanced companion. Aim for at least 30 minutes of walking per day to keep them fit and engaged. Walking provides both physical and mental stimulation, as it exposes your Bolonoodle to new sights, smells, and experiences. Interactive games like fetch, tug-of-war, or hide-and-seek can be great bonding experiences and help to burn off excess energy. Mental Exercise Mental exercise is just as important as physical exercise for intelligent breeds like the Bolonoodle. Provide puzzle toys, interactive feeders, or scent games to challenge their minds and prevent boredom. Training sessions , such as teaching new tricks or practicing obedience commands, can also serve as a form of mental exercise. Off-Leash Exploration If you have access to a securely fenced area, allowing your Bolonoodle some off-leash time can be a great way for them to explore and expend energy at their own pace. Always supervise your dog during off-leash activities to ensure their safety, and be mindful of local leash laws and regulations. Social Activities Bolondoodles are social dogs that enjoy interacting with other dogs and people. If your dog is well-socialized and gets along with other dogs, consider visiting a local dog park or arranging playdates with other dogs. This can provide additional exercise and mental stimulation, as well as help reinforce their social skills. Bolonoodle Health Issues While Bolonoodles are generally healthy dogs, they can be prone to certain health issues inherited from their parent breeds. Being aware of these potential health concerns will help you take the necessary precautions and provide the best care for your Bolonoodle. Here are some key health concerns to consider: Hip Dysplasia Hip dysplasia is a genetic condition that affects the development of the hip joint, causing pain and arthritis. It is more common in larger dog breeds but can occasionally affect smaller dogs like the Bolondoodle. Regular vet check-ups, maintaining a healthy weight, and providing joint supplements can help manage and prevent the progression of hip dysplasia. Progressive Retinal Atrophy PRA Progressive retinal atrophy is an inherited eye condition that causes the gradual degeneration of the retina, eventually leading to blindness. PRA is more common in Poodle breeds, and Bolonoodles can inherit the condition from their Poodle parent. Patellar Luxation The condition of patellar luxation refers to the displacement or movement of the kneecap patella from its usual position. This can cause pain, lameness, and eventually lead to arthritis. Patellar luxation is more common in smaller dog breeds, and your Bolondoodle may be at risk. Regular vet check-ups can help detect patellar luxation early, and surgical intervention may be necessary in severe cases. Retinal Dysplasia Retinal dysplasia is another inherited eye condition that can affect Bolondoodles. It involves abnormal development of the retina, which can lead to vision problems and, in severe cases, blindness. Mitral Valve Disease Mitral valve disease is a heart condition that affects the mitral valve, causing it to degenerate and leak. This can lead to congestive heart failure over time. While this condition is more common in older dogs, it can occasionally affect younger dogs like the Bolondoodle. Regular veterinary check-ups, including heart examinations, can help detect and manage mitral valve disease, ensuring your dog receives appropriate treatment. Final Thoughts Owning a Bolonoodle has been an excellent experience for me. They are the perfect mix of two sweet, friendly breeds that make for a loving, loyal, and intelligent companion. With proper training, grooming, and exercise, they make amazing family pets. If you are searching for a hypoallergenic, non-shedding, and family-friendly breed, the Bolonoodle may be the perfect dog for you! Summary Bolonoodles are a small, mixed-breed dog resulting from a cross between a Bolognese and a Toy Poodle, known for their intelligence, affection, and adaptability. These dogs have a hypoallergenic coat, typically medium in length, with soft, wavy or curly hair, and come in cream or white colors. Ideal living conditions for a Bolonoodle include a loving, stable environment, preferably with access to a secure outdoor space, and they adapt well to apartment living. Bolonoodles have a friendly and affectionate temperament, making them great family pets, especially for households with children or other pets. Grooming requirements include regular brushing, bathing, ear cleaning, nail trimming, and dental care to keep them healthy and well-groomed. Training should focus on socialization, obedience training, housetraining, leash training, and mental stimulation using positive reinforcement techniques. Exercise needs include daily walks, playtime, mental exercise, off-leash exploration, and social activities to maintain physical and mental health. Health concerns to be aware of include hip dysplasia, progressive retinal atrophy, patellar luxation, retinal dysplasia, and mitral valve disease; regular veterinary check-ups can help detect and manage these conditions. They come from two smart parent breeds, which should make them pretty easy to train. For the most part, this is the case, though female Bolonoodles are often stubborn and independent, which can make them harder to train than males. After all, they have a ton of hair, and it can grow into a tangled mess. In truth, Bolonoodles need only moderate grooming. Diabetes: Diabetes in dogs is similar to diabetes in humans. It comes in two forms: insulin-deficiency diabetes and insulin-resistance diabetes. Both are manageable, though neither is curable. For dogs, insulin-deficiency diabetes is the most common type. Urolithiasis: More commonly known as urinary stones, urolithiasis is when hard stones form in the urinary tract, caused by the buildup of minerals. Sebaceous Adenitis: Sebaceous adenitis is a pretty rare immune-mediated condition that leads to inflamed skin that forms scales and crust. With this condition, the femur and hip fail to form correctly, causing the femur to rub on the hip socket, resulting in pain, deterioration of the bone, and loss of mobility. Retinal Dysplasia: Retinal dysplasia is an early-onset form of progressive retinal atrophy that usually becomes noticeable around months old. Patellar Luxation: Patellar luxation is a kneecap that dislocates. Progressive Retinal Atrophy: Progressive retinal atrophy is the degeneration of photoreceptor cells in the eyes that leads to vision loss and blindness. Mitral Valve Disease: Mitral valve disease is when the mitral valve of the heart begins to leak. It can cause heart murmurs and congestive heart failure. All Bolonoodles are small dogs, so size differences between the sexes are minimal. However, there are notable temperamental differences between males and females. Females tend to be independent and stubborn. Males are usually the friendlier dogs that want to please their owners. This makes males much easier to train. The stubborn independence of a female Bolonoodle can be difficult for anyone to train, but especially for a new dog owner. It only makes sense that their offspring, the Bolonoodle, would also be hypoallergenic. Poodles are widely considered to be some of the smartest dogs in the world, and Bolognese are thought to be the smartest of the Bichon-type breeds. Put them together and you get a very smart dog that needs a lot of mental stimulation. Without enough mental engagement, your Bolonoodle could easily become mischievous and even destructive. Like the Labrador Retriever, Poodles were originally created to be water retrievers that would retrieve waterfowl shot down by hunters in bodies of water. To be successful, these dogs had to be great swimmers and love the water, which is a trait still shared by Poodles and their offspring today, including the Bolonoodle. They have minimal maintenance needs and are incredibly friendly, playful dogs. Highly intelligent canines, Bolonoodles do require lots of mental stimulation to alleviate boredom and prevent mischievous behavior. Thanks to hypoallergenic parents and a coat that sheds very little, Bolonoodles are generally hypoallergenic as well. They have long coats that need only minimal maintenance, particularly if you keep them trimmed somewhat short. He gains experience on a full-time journey of exploration. Life Span Did You Know? The Boxer is one of the most popular dog breeds in the United States. It has been recognized by the AKC since .Although the Boxer dog breed originated in Germany, their ancient ancestry can be traced back to the Assyrian empire war dogs of BC. The modern Boxer breed we know and love today was originally developed in Germany in the late s. English-bred Bulldogs and the Bullenbesiier were crossed to create an energetic and agile hunting dog to chase wild game. The Boxer is a popular family companion and a versatile working dog. As a member of the Working Group, Boxers can be found competing in dog sports like agility, obedience, and herding. They also make great service and assistance dogs, as well as therapy dogs, and can be found working as search and rescue dogs, drug detection dogs, police dogs, and military dogs. The Boxer is a muscular and energetic dog that tends to have a happy, friendly disposition. They bond closely with their families and tend to get along well with children and other dogs. They can even do well with other pets despite their high prey drive if they are socialized and trained with them. As long as they are well-socialized, Boxers are generally upbeat, playful, and friendly. Although they have a natural instinct to protect their family from unwanted visitors, they do tend to warm up once introduced and are happy to make a new friend. They can be prone to barking a lot if you do not work on socialization and training your dog to stop barking early on. Boxers can be highly adaptable dogs. Although they have a lot of energy and are better suited to homes with yards where they can run, they can adapt to apartment living as long as they get the daily exercise, attention, and mental stimulation they need. As with any non-arctic dog breed, they are sensitive to very cold temperatures. Boxers are also a brachycephalic breed, which means they are even more sensitive to heat than other dogs. A Boxer is also one of the most affectionate dog breeds. Because they bond so closely with their families and get bored easily, they should not be left alone for long periods of time. Potential health conditions to be aware of in a Boxer include hip dysplasia, degenerative myelopathy, thyroid issues , and heart conditions like aortic stenosis and cardiomyopathy. Good breeding practices make a big difference and reputable breeders will screen their dogs to avoid passing preventable issues to puppies. So, make sure you are asking the breeder about the health and genetic history of the parents and about any health tests that have been done. Boxers are intelligent dogs that are eager to please their owners. Despite their energetic personality, they are one of the best dog breeds for first-time owners and are highly trainable dogs. They tend to excel at almost any task put before them! Because of their open, friendly nature and high energy, they have a tendency to jump up at people in excitement and playfulness. Since they grow into powerful dogs, you will want to make sure you train your dog not to jump up. Boxers have smooth and short coats that will shed a little year-round and require minimal grooming. A brush-down once or twice a week and the occasional bath as needed will keep their short coat healthy and looking great. Nail trims once or twice a month are usually enough to keep nails from growing too long. Checking ears weekly and carefully cleaning as needed can help prevent ear infections. Checking and wiping their facial wrinkles weekly or a few times a week if your dog is prone to getting into things can help keep their wrinkles clean and free of irritation. Dental diseases, like gum disease, are the most common health issues in older dogs because dental care is often overlooked; and, it can lead to other serious health issues. Brushing daily, plus cleanings at the vet when needed, is ideal. The Boxer is a high-energy dog breed that needs plenty of daily exercise to stay happy and healthy. Due to their high prey drive and urge to chase, they should only be let off-leash in secure areas. Boxers tend to get bored with repetition, are excellent problem solvers, and are naturally exuberant. A fully-grown Boxer usually stands inches tall at the shoulder and weighs pounds. Boxers generally live years on average. In Germany, the Boxer was one of the first dog breeds chosen for police training. Featured Boxer Article. Reserve your new puppy now! Be sure that they have a secure area where they can get away from children if needed, and they can still see everything going on around them. Introduce him slowly to everyone in your family, not all at once or he will become overwhelmed. How to Cope with Boxer Bites And Scratched up Furniture Boxers are very smart and loving dogs but can be aggressive at times because of their strong personalities. You should also invest in chew toys like Kongs that they can chew on without destroying your shoes, couches and other things around the house. A great alternative to having them always on a leash is getting a dog crate, putting it in the living room and letting them sleep there at night. Lastly, sit down with your children and teach them how they need to behave around their new family member. Renowned for their easy maintenance and the ability to thrive in apartment living, French Bulldogs are a city dweller's delight. Their small size, typically weighing under 28 pounds, makes them perfectly suited to compact urban spaces. However, their charming personalities and heartwarming companionship are universally loved, irrespective of city or countryside living. This breed's laid-back nature does not mean they're devoid of fun and play. On the contrary, French Bulldogs can be quite playful and are known for their often comical and entertaining antics, which only further endears them to their owners. Their affectionate demeanor, combined with a remarkably low barking tendency, makes them a joy to have around the house. French Bulldogs are sturdy, compact, and stocky, with a powerful muscular build that contradicts their small size. They have a smooth coat that comes in a variety of colors, from fawn and brindle to white and grey. Their facial expressions are human-like, and they're known to "talk" using a complex system of yawns, yips, and gargles. However, owning a French Bulldog does come with responsibilities. Their brachycephalic short-nosed nature makes them prone to certain health issues and less tolerant of extreme temperatures. Despite their muscular appearance, they are not the best swimmers, and care should be taken around bodies of water. Share A Story! Your French Bulldog's Health We know that because you care so much about your dog , you want to take good care of her. That is why we have summarized the health concerns we will be discussing with you over the life of your French Bulldog. By knowing about health concerns specific to French Bulldogs, we can tailor a preventive health plan to watch for and hopefully prevent some predictable risks. That does not mean your dog will have these problems; it just means that she is more at risk than other dogs. We will describe the most common issues seen in French Bulldogs to give you an idea of what may come up in her future. This guide contains general health information important to all canines as well as the most important genetic predispositions for French Bulldogs. At the end of the article, we have also included a description of what you can do at home to keep your Frenchie looking and feeling her best. And unfortunately, your French Bulldog is more likely than other dogs to have problems with her teeth. It starts with tartar build-up on the teeth and progresses to infection of the gums and roots of the teeth. In fact, your French Bulldog's life span may be cut short by one to three years! Infections French Bulldogs are susceptible to bacterial and viral infections — the same ones that all dogs can get — such as parvo, rabies, and distemper. Many of these infections are preventable through vaccination , which we will recommend based on the diseases we see in our area, her age, and other factors. Obesity Obesity can be a significant health problem in French Bulldogs. It is a serious disease that may cause or worsen joint problems, metabolic and digestive disorders, back pain and heart disease. Instead, give her a hug, brush her fur or teeth, play a game with her, or perhaps take her for a walk. Parasites All kinds of worms and bugs can invade your Frenchie's body, inside and out. Everything from fleas and ticks to ear mites can infest her skin and ears. Hookworms, roundworms, heartworms , and whipworms can get into her system in a number of ways: drinking unclean water, walking on contaminated soil, or being bitten by an infected mosquito. Some of these parasites can be transmitted to you or a family member and are a serious concern for everyone. Viera East Veterinary Center will also recommend preventive medication as necessary to keep her healthy. Spay or Neuter One of the best things you can do for your French Bulldog is to have her spayed neutered for males. In females, this means we surgically remove the ovaries and usually the uterus, and in males, it means we surgically remove the testicles. Spaying or neutering decreases the likelihood of certain types of cancers and eliminates the possibility of your pet becoming pregnant or fathering unwanted puppies. Performing this surgery also gives us a chance, while your pet is under anesthesia, to identify and address some of the diseases your dog is likely to develop. For example, if your pet needs hip X-rays or a puppy tooth extracted, this would be a good time. This is convenient for you and easy for your friend. Routine blood testing prior to surgery also helps us to identify and take precautions for common problems that increase anesthetic or surgical risk. The disease is caused when the jelly-like cushion between one or more vertebrae slips or ruptures, causing the disc to press on the spinal cord. If your dog is suddenly unable or unwilling to jump up, go up stairs, is reluctant to move around, has a hunched back, cries out, or refuses to eat or go potty, he is likely in severe pain. He may even drag his back feet or be suddenly paralyzed and unable to get up or use his back legs. Call us or an emergency clinic immediately! For less severe cases, rest and medication may resolve the problem. As with so many other diseases, weight control helps to prevent this problem. Spinal Deformities French Bulldogs are more likely than other canines to be born with spinal deformities a condition called hemivertebrae , which may lead to spinal cord damage, instability, or disability. Inflammatory Bowel Disease Inflammatory Bowel Disease or IBD is an immune system disorder common in French Bulldogs in which the intestinal lining becomes overrun with immune system cells called lymphocytes and plasmacytes. Chronic vomiting or diarrhea is common or it may flare up suddenly and then improve again for a time. Stress, diet change, or intestinal parasites may make it worse. If your friend has diarrhea or digestive upsets that are not explained by the more common reasons, diagnostic tests, which may include intestinal biopsy, will be needed. Lifetime medications and special diets are usually required to keep this bellyache under control. Eye Problems Not many things have as dramatic an impact on your dog's quality of life as the proper functioning of his eyes. Unfortunately, French Bulldogs can inherit or develop a number of different eye conditions, some of which may cause blindness if not treated right away, and most of which can be extremely painful! We will evaluate his eyes at every examination to look for any signs of concern. Cataracts are a common cause of blindness in older French Bulldogs. Many dogs adjust well to losing their vision and get along just fine. Surgery to remove cataracts and restore sight may also be an option. Distichiasis is a condition caused by extra hairs that grow inside of the eyelid and rub on the surface of the eye. This is one of the most commonly inherited diseases in dogs, and your French Bulldog is more likely than other dogs to develop this painful condition. If untreated, these abnormal hairs can cause corneal ulcers and chronic eye pain. Several treatment options are available, and the prognosis is good once the hairs have been permanently removed. Entropion is a condition where the eyelid rolls inward, causing the eyelashes to rub against the cornea surface of the eyeball. This is an extremely irritating and painful condition that can ultimately lead to blindness. It can happen in any dog breed; however, your French Bulldog is especially at risk for this heritable disorder. Surgical correction is usually successful if performed early. Because your Frenchie has eyeballs that naturally protrude, he is more vulnerable to eye injuries. Scrapes or punctures to the cornea the protective covering on the eyeball are the most common injuries. Not only do they hurt, they can become infected and affect his vision. Call us at right away if he has any problems with his eyes. A damaged cornea is painful and should be treated immediately. Medication and sometimes surgery is required. Allergies In humans, an allergy to pollen, mold, or dust makes people sneeze and their eyes itch. In dogs, rather than sneeze, allergies make their skin itchy. Commonly, the feet, belly, folds of the skin, and ears are most affected. Symptoms typically start between the ages of one and three and can get worse every year. Licking the paws, rubbing the face, and frequent ear infections are the most common signs. The good news is that there are many treatment options available for this condition. Bleeding Disorders There are several types of inherited bleeding disorders which occur in dogs. They range in severity from very mild to very severe. Many times a pet seems normal until a serious injury occurs or surgery is performed, and then severe bleeding can result. Knee Problems Sometimes your French Bulldog's kneecap patella may slip out of place called patellar luxation. You might notice that he runs along and suddenly picks up a back leg and skips or hops for a few strides. If the problem is mild and involves only one leg, your friend may not require much treatment beyond arthritis medication. When symptoms are severe, surgery may be needed to realign the kneecap to keep it from popping out of place. Hip and Elbow Dysplasia Both hips and elbows are at risk for dysplasia, an inherited disease that causes the joints to develop improperly and results in arthritis. Stiffness in your French Bulldog's elbows or hips may become a problem for him, especially as he matures. You may notice that he begins to show lameness in his legs or has difficulty getting up from lying down. We can treat the arthritis—the sooner the better—to minimize discomfort and pain. Surgery is sometimes a good option in severe and life-limiting cases. Keep in mind that overweight dogs may develop arthritis years earlier than those of normal weight, causing undue pain and suffering! Respiratory Distress Syndrome This disease, also known as brachycephalic syndrome, affects dogs with a short nose, like your French Bulldog. As a consequence, the soft palate the soft part at the back of the roof of the mouth , is too long and hangs down into the airway. The nostrils are often too small, and sometimes the trachea, or windpipe, is narrow and undersized. All of these things lead to a narrow and obstructed airway. Many of these dogs can barely breathe! Watch for exercise intolerance, loud breathing, coughing, bluish gums, or fainting. With his short nose, he is also more likely to develop other problems, such as flatulence from excessive air intake, pneumonia from aspirating food, or heat stroke. In severe cases, surgical correction may be recommended. Bladder or Kidney Stones There are a few different types of stones that can form in the kidney or in the bladder, and French Bulldogs are more likely to develop them than other breeds. Call us immediately! Degenerative Myelopathy Degenerative Myelopathy is a neurologic condition, similar to ALS or Lou Gehrig's Disease in people, that causes weakness and poor nerve function in the hind legs. It affects French Bulldogs more frequently than other breeds. If your dog has this disease, he will become increasingly weak and disabled in the hind legs and will eventually suffer from paralysis in his hindquarters, along with incontinence. Rehabilitation, exercise, acupuncture , and dietary supplements can be helpful, but there is no cure. A genetic test is available to determine whether your dog is at risk for this heritable disease. Mange Demodex is a microscopic mite that lives in the hair follicles of dogs. All dogs have them. In mild cases, pet owners may notice a few dry, irritated, hairless lesions. These often occur on the face or feet and may or may not be itchy. Secondary skin infections may occur. Prompt veterinary care is important to keep the disease from getting out of hand. Many pets seem to outgrow the problem, while others require lifelong management. Skin Infections Your French Bulldog is prone to a form of skin infection called lip-fold pyoderma, which occurs because the folds of skin along the lower jaw are usually moist. Bacteria and yeast can readily gain a foothold and cause a reddened, smelly area that is uncomfortable for your dog. We will examine him for this problem, but let us know if you see signs. When symptoms are severe, the excess skin folds can be surgically removed. Taking Care of Your French Bulldog at Home Much of what you can do to keep your dog happy and healthy is common sense, just like it is for people. Be sure to adhere to the schedule of examinations and vaccinations that we recommend for her. Another very important step in caring for your pet is signing up for pet health insurance. There will certainly be medical tests and procedures she will need throughout her life and pet health insurance will help you cover those costs. Routine Care, Diet, and Exercise Build her routine care into your schedule to help your Frenchie live longer, stay healthier, and be happier during her lifetime. We cannot overemphasize the importance of a proper diet and exercise routine. Supervise your pet as you would a toddler. Keep doors closed, pick up after yourself, and block off rooms as necessary. She has low grooming needs. Brush her coat as needed, at least weekly. Clean her ears weekly, even as a puppy. Check her facial wrinkles and eyes often. Her droopy skin and eyes can collect debris. She is well suited for apartment living; she will need a daily walk and regular inside play. She can be sensitive to warm temperatures; avoid any prolonged exposure and be very alert to the signs of heat stress. Feed a high-quality diet appropriate for her age. What to Watch For Any abnormal symptom could be a sign of serious disease, or it could just be a minor or temporary problem. The important thing is to be able to tell when to seek veterinary help, and how urgently. Many diseases cause dogs to have a characteristic combination of symptoms, which together can be a clear signal that your French Bulldog needs help.

Learn More Labrador Retriever is a quite famous breed, topping the list of great family dogs due to their friendly and social personality. Now, what colors come to your mind when you think of the Labradors? Black, yellow, and chocolate. Silver Labrador Retriever is a beautiful color variation of traditional Labradors; because of the presence of a dilute gene. Their distinct coat color has caught the attention of many; however, not without some controversy. About the Breed Silver Labrador Retrievers are one of the rarest shades of labradors. They are a hyperactive breed with a compelling sporting nature. They respond well to training, enjoy exploring nature with you, love playing water sports, and are fond of the fetch game, making them perfect for active families. These beautiful dogs are well-known for befriending every creature they see without any degree of communication. They love being the center of attention and thrive on social interaction. A little clingy at times, but they deserve all that for their service just existing. Their agreeable personality and intelligence make them one of the most charming breeds. However, according to the breed standard set by Labrador Retriever Club, true labradors are yellow, black, and chocolate in color. Many breeders believe that the other colors are due to cross-breeding Labradors with Weimaraners. They were created in Newfoundland and were first introduced by the European to Britain settlers via the ships trading between Canada and Poole. Labs were initially bred for duck retrieving, assisting in fishing adventures, and as a hunting dog. But with time, their popularity grew more as household pets, and to this date, especially in the western world. They first started appearing, according to some sources, in , while others believe it was in the s. Now, it is clear that their distinct coat colors are due to the presence of the recessive dilute gene pair that has recently appeared in the Labrador gene pool. The source of that dilute gene is what makes their exact origin vague. This is why the profile of Silver Labs remains controversial for the most part. Silver Labrador Facts Silver Labradors have blue eyes as puppies. They are more prone to developing skin problems such as Color Dilution Alopecia than other Labradors. They are outgoing and social. They are intelligent and highly trainable Silver Labrador Appearance Just look at Silver Labrador slaying in this picture, like he was born to model. Their nose, which is always in search of something to eat or sniffing butts , tends to be brown in color. These rare gray labradors have this indescribable charm that keeps winning people over. Owners tend to be drawn to their wide skulls and muscular build. The average height range for almost all grown Silver Labs is between .WeightThe male Silver Lab tends to have a slightly bulkier build in contrast to the female Lab. On average, the weight of a fully-grown Silver Labrador falls between 55 to 80 pounds. The weight range is 45 to 70 pounds in the case of female Labs. CoatSilver Lab has a double coat to protect them against harsh cold weather. Theirinner coatis denser and thicker as compared to their outer coat, which is thinand short. Their coat is overall smooth and shiny and feels euphoric to pet. Yellow and black are the most common coat shades in Labrador Retrievers, and silver and chocolate are the least common. Silver Lab Puppies A Silver Labrador puppy is one of the most aesthetically pleasing sights to the eyes in the world. The sparkly blue eyes and the smoky grey shade make a striking contrast. As time progresses, they tend to darken. Their eyes turn yellow after the Silver pups cross the age of 6 to 8 months. Silver Labrador Temperament and Personality Talking about Silver Lab temperament, just like other Labrador Retrievers, they too have friendly, affectionate, caring personalities. They are a very intelligent breed that makes the best companion to their human family. This high-spirited breed matures physically but remains child-like at heart, lifting the mood around the house by being jolly, goofy, jumpy, and adored by absolutely everyone. The Silver Labrador retriever has an easy-going personality, which means they enjoy every activity with you. They just want to feel your touch, no matter what you do. It is because of their attachment to their owners, which is why they are prone to exhibiting signs of separation anxiety when left alone on their own for too long. Moreover, it is a social breed that thrives on attention and being around people. These sweet creatures are the best friends of kids. Silver Labs are patient and gentle toward children; they can be their playmates for hours without getting tired. One of the best qualities of These dogs is they get along really well with other dogs and pets. On the contrary, they get excited at the sight of another human, hang out with them and try to impress them with how cool they are they actually are. They also tend to chewupon objects due to anxiety. The Silver Lab is an active breed, just like the black and yellow labs. In order to keep them away from destructive behaviors, they need to stay stimulated mentally and physically. They can be a little prone to nipping, so they do require a lot of your attention. Plus, if you enjoy outdoor adventures like hiking, then Silver Lab will prove to be an extraordinary companion to you. Due to being double-coated, they shed a fair amount of hair, especially the Silver Labrador, because of skin problems. Grooming Requirements Brushing As we mentioned above, labs shed quite a bit. And by this, we mean you will be able to collect an adequate amount of hair from all over the house, especially during peak season. Using coconut oil at least once a month can keep their coat neat, shiny, and soft. Gently massage the oil for about five minutes and then clean it with a towel. Bathing Bathing your Labrador Retriever once a month is adequate. Use lukewarm water and mild shampoo; it will keep their skin maintained. However, if you start noticing scratching of nails against the floor while running, walking, or jumping around, trim their nails immediately. Ear Cleaning Their adorable floppy ears need to be checked and cleaned frequently to prevent any potential infection. Always include ear cleaning in their grooming session. Health Complications in Silver Labrador Every breed is likely to face minor or major health complications. And we have listed all the possible health conditions your Labrador Breed could suffer from. When getting a Silver Labrador, always look for a reputable breeder. Life Expectancy Silver Labrador dogs typically have a lifespan between 10 to 14 years. It can vary from dog to dog based on health issues, environment, and other factors. It occurs due to the presence of a recessive gene. In this condition, your dog suffers from skin problems, including hair loss or thinning in the form of patches, itchiness, scaliness, or flaky skin. Vets give treatments to tackle secondary skin infections. Avoid using brushes with harsh bristles. The deficiency of type II muscle fibers causes muscle weakness, resulting in symptoms like stunted growth, trouble swallowing, stiff arched back, shrunken muscles, and low tolerance to exercise. They progressively get worse and are the most prominent in 5 months old puppy. Sadly, most puppies with CNM are subjected to euthanization due to their inability to function normally in life. No dog owner should ever have to go through this painful experience. This developmental issue in both joints causes difficulty or friction in climbing stairs, jumping, running, and even walking. Exercise Induced Collapse Labradors and their unending love for playing and exercise is not something hidden; their energy drive is high. EIC refers to the recessive autosomal inherited trait. Your Labrador Retriever, despite feeling weak, will still try to be active. Then after five to ten minutes, they collapse. Extreme exercise sessions are to be avoided in dogs with this condition. This results in excessive discharge from ears, inflammation, itching, foul odor, and head shaking. Otitis Externais one of the most common ear infections in Silver Labradors, characterized by ear canal inflammation. Ear infections are unpleasant and painful and cause discomfort for your dogs. Consult a local veterinarian right away if you notice any of the above symptoms. Over Eating Labrador Retrievers are quite popular for being foodies. Some scientists associate it with a genetic mutation. Sometimes, overeating might also indicate an underlying serious health issue like hypothyroidism. Silver Labrador Diet and Nutrition Your high-energy Labrador Retriever needs a high-quality, nutritious, and protein-rich diet to function healthily. The amount of dog food you feed them may vary a little with their size and weight. For example, your Silver Lab of 50 pounds will need about 2 and a half cups of good quality dog food daily. The calorie requirement for an pound Silver Labrador is a little higher; they will need about 3 and a half cups of dog food to fulfill their 1, calorie requirement each day. Consider getting dog food that has adequate calcium for better joint development. And remember, it is always best to divide the meals into 3 to 4 intervals for better digestion. These greedy creatures tend to unleash their inner ever-hungry beast at the sight of food, which causes bloating. In order to keep them physically and mentally stimulated, 60 minutes of exercise every day is essential. And if your Lab is super active, make it 1. Labs love playing fetch, running, going on fast-paced walking, and being goofy. Thus, their exercise session can include any activity; just make sure they get enough exercise every day! Dedicate one hour of your time daily to your dog, and give them all your attention and love. Apart from playing and exercising, you can keep them busy by getting them interactive and stimulating toys. Those toys also help them in providing comfort when you leave them alone for a while. They are a highly intelligent breed and can be easily trained. They are a welcome addition to most families. Positive reinforcements work well with them; their love for food makes it easier to lure them into doing literally anything you want. All you need is a favorite treat, toy, or any complimentary food, and boom; your Lab becomes the most obedient boy in the world. As puppies, they are easier to control and manage, while the adult Labs are larger in size and can be a little stubborn. Conclusion Altogether, Silver Labrador dogs have all lovable characteristics, just like the traditional Labrador. They are outgoing, energetic, sweet, intelligent, and loyal furry friends. Their friendliness towards kids, strangers and other pets makes them great dogs for families. This intelligent, loyal and friendly breed can fill diverse roles with ease as a family dog, therapy dog, hunting companion and guide for the blind. Good natured and beautiful, the Golden Retriever is a real crowd pleaser. Temperament Golden Retrievers are known as world-class family dogs whose sweet, puppy-like temperament makes them a joyful playmate to people of all ages. Loyal, trustworthy and eager-to-please, these dogs are typically easy to train. Goldens are part of the Sporting Group, so they are hardworking and need and love! Characteristics Behind the friendly eyes of the Golden Retriever lives an intelligent mind and sweet temperament. Eager to please, Goldens are easy to train and love hearing praise when they master a new skill. Goldens are also high-energy and can perform tasks like waterfowl retrieval for hours on end. Because they were bred to assist on the hunt, keep them well exercised and busy to avoid undesirable behavior. Overall, this smart, outgoing and good-natured breed makes him a trustworthy leader in a number of fields. Golden Retrievers serve important roles such as search-and-rescue dogs, guides for the blind, hunting partners and beloved family dogs. Lifespan 10 to 12 years Colors The Golden Retriever gets his name for his beautiful and lustrous golden-colored coat. Its golden hue can range from dark to light golden, but is always a shade of gold. Shedding Goldens sport a thick, water-repellant double coat. They shed heavily one or two times a year, and moderately on a continuous basis. Brush your Golden Retriever a few times a week to keep shedding under control. Health Golden Retrievers are a generally healthy breed. Screening for elbow and hip dysplasia, eye conditions and certain heart diseases is recommended, however. Without adequate exercise, Goldens are at risk of becoming overweight. You want to select a food that will help him maintain his ideal body condition long-term. Here are a few foods that we recommend for Golden Retrievers. We are overjoyed for you! Golden Retrievers are one of the most friendly and loving breeds…and lucky for you, one of the easiest to train. Golden Retrievers require a great deal of mental stimulation to avoid going about on their own or becoming frustrated. Their love for food is infinite. Prerequisites for training my Golden Retriever puppy? What age can I start to train my Golden Retriever puppy? Sounds like a good deal! We can only hope. What do I need to train my Golden Retriever? Say bye to that sticky, meaty feeling in your fingertips. A piece of non-slip vet bed or a soft mat: For a cozy bed, warm nights, and good dreams. Treats: The more smelly, the better. Two identical toys : Great for swaps! The name says it all…your Golden Retriever puppy will love retrieving, so identical toys will be great for all the games we have in store for you in the Zigzag Puppy training app. Of course, Golden Retrievers grow to be big dogs. How much exercise does a Golden Retriever need? A golden retriever needs 2 hours of exercise a day. What age is a Golden Retriever fully grown? Golden Retrievers reach adulthood at 3 years of age and are seniors by 8 years old. Though their height has been reached, their weight will still fill out and they will continue to mentally mature. What are Golden Retrievers bred for? Distinctly British, the 1st Baron of Tweedmouth developed the breed crossing his golden colored retrieving dog Nous with a Tweed Water Spaniel — these look similar to Irish Water Spaniels. The cross resulted in a dog that was comfortable being on land and water kind of like crocodiles , and robust enough to hunt goose, partridge and even deer. Do Golden Retrievers make good family pets? In fact, Golden Retrievers are one of the most loved dog breeds in the UK. The Kennel Club has a lot more good information and info about them. What does this have to do with how I train my Golden Retriever puppy? But there is a logic as to why knowing the context might help you train your Golden Retriever better: Golden Retrievers love to work. Commonly employed as Guide Dogs, they love having a job to do, which means they will adore training. Anyhow, they will be a breeze to train. They will also do almost anything for your soft words and approval — your praise will work just as well as treats. Because they are so gentle, they are a great fit for families with a variety of lifestyles and ages. They need a good amount of exercise; mental as well as physical. Let us rephrase — a hefty amount of exercise. Besides you and food, being in water is what they love the most! They have a very strong sense of smell, so retrieving or scent work games tend to be the biggest treat for most. Golden Retrievers are the social butterflies of dogs. They love most people, and are not discreet in showing it. You know how us Brits can be about politeness. That being said, make sure you also teach them the wonders of giving things up. It can lead to great things! But it can also be less helpful when they give you a love bite on your arm — give them a toy to carry instead. Shift to some play, and revisit training later — we want training to be associated with fun, and not something they begin to dread. Although a playful pup sounds endearing, consider how many games of fetch or tag you want to play each day, and whether you have kids or other dogs who can stand in as playmates for the dog. The Golden is slow to mature and retains the silly, playful personality of a puppy until three to four years of age, which can be both delightful and annoying. Many keep their puppyish traits into old age. Originally bred for the physically demanding job of retrieving ducks and other fowl for hunters, the Golden needs daily exercise : a walk or jog, free time in the yard, a run at the beach or lake Goldens love water , or a game of fetch. And like other intelligent breeds who were bred to work, they need to have a job to do, such as retrieving the paper, waking up family members, or competing in dog sports. A tired Golden is a well-behaved Golden. As well as giving your Golden Retriever physical and mental exercise , you should also be prepared to include him in your family activities. Golden Retriever Highlights Golden Retrievers shed a lot, especially during spring and fall. Brushing their coat daily helps remove loose hair, preventing it from spreading on your clothes and around your home. Living with a Golden means embracing their shedding. Golden Retrievers are active and require minutes of vigorous exercise every day. They enjoy obedience training, agility classes, and other dog activities that provide both physical and mental stimulation. While they are gentle and reliable around children, Golden Retrievers are large and exuberant, which might accidentally knock over small kids. Goldens have hearty appetites and can become overweight if overfed. Manage treats, measure their daily food portions, and feed them regular meals instead of leaving food out all day. Due to their popularity, some breeders prioritize profit over the well-being of the dogs. To ensure a healthy pup, avoid irresponsible breeders, puppy mills, or pet stores. Look for reputable breeders who test their breeding dogs for genetic diseases and focus on good temperaments. Golden Retriever History For many years, there was a legend that Golden Retrievers were descended from Russian sheepdogs bought from a circus. In fact, the breed was developed in Scotland, at the highland estate of Sir Dudley Majoribanks, later known as Lord Tweedmouth. Tweedmouth, like many gentry of his day, bred animals of all kinds, trying to perfect different breeds. He also wanted the dog to be loyal and even-tempered in the home. Tweedmouth kept mostly the yellow puppies to continue his breeding program, and gave others away to friends and relatives. The American Kennel Club recognized the breed in .Today, the Golden Retriever is the second most popular breed in the U. Golden Retriever Size Males are 23 to 24 inches tall and weigh 65 to 75 pounds. Females are generally .Golden Retrievers usually reach their full height by one year of age, and their mature weight by two. Golden Retriever Personality A sweet, calm nature is the hallmark of the breed. The Golden was bred to work with people, and is eager to please his owner. Though hard-wired with a good disposition, like all dogs the Golden must be well-raised and well-trained to make the most of his heritage. Socialization helps ensure that your Golden puppy grows up to be a well-rounded dog. Health clearances prove that a dog has been tested for and cleared of a particular condition. You can confirm health clearances by checking the OFA web site offa. Some dogs show pain and lameness on one or both rear legs, but you may not notice any signs of discomfort in a dog with hip dysplasia. As the dog ages, arthritis can develop. Dogs with hip dysplasia should not be bred. Elbow Dysplasia: This is a heritable condition common to large-breed dogs. This can lead to painful lameness. Your vet may recommend surgery to correct the problem or medication to control the pain. Cataracts: As in humans, canine cataracts are characterized by cloudy spots on the eye lens that can grow over time. Cataracts can usually be surgically removed with good results. Early in the disease, dogs become night-blind. As the disease progresses, they lose their daytime vision as well. Many dogs adapt to limited or complete vision loss very well, as long as their surroundings remain the same. Subvalvular Aortic Stenosis: This heart problem is caused by a narrow connection between the left ventricle out-flow and the aorta. It can cause fainting and even sudden death. Your vet can detect it and prescribe the proper treatment. Osteochondrosis Dissecans OCD : This orthopedic condition, caused by improper growth of cartilage in the joints, usually occurs in the elbows, but it has been seen in the shoulders as well. It causes a painful stiffening of the joint, to the point that the dog is unable to bend his elbow. It can be detected in dogs as early as four to nine months of age. Allergies: Golden Retrievers can be allergic to a variety of substances, ranging from food to pollen. If your Golden is licking his paws or rubbing his face a great deal, have him checked by your vet. The main symptom is excessive bleeding after an injury or surgery. Other symptoms include nosebleeds, bleeding gums, or bleeding in the stomach or intestines. There is no cure, and a blood transfusion from the blood of normal dogs is currently the only treatment. Research is underway for new treatments, including medication. A vet can test your dog for the condition. Dogs with this condition should not be bred. Bloat occurs when the stomach is distended with gas or air and then twists. The dog is unable to belch or vomit to rid himself of the excess air in his stomach, and blood flow to the heart is impeded. Blood pressure drops and the dog goes into shock. Without immediate medical attention, the dog can die. Suspect bloat if your dog has a distended abdomen, is drooling excessively, and retching without throwing up. He also may be restless, depressed, lethargic, and weak with a rapid heart rate. If you notice these symptoms, get your dog to the vet as soon as possible. Epilepsy : Epilepsy is a brain disorder that causes periodic seizures and convulsions. Your vet will need to know how severe the seizures are and how often they occur to determine what medication to prescribe, if any. Hemangiosarcoma : This is a very dangerous form of cancer that originates in the lining of blood vessels and spleen. It most commonly occurs in middle-age and elderly dogs. Golden Retriever Care Golden Retrievers are built for action and love outdoor romps. If you like to hike or jog, your Golden will be happy to join you. Slacking on the activity, however, could lead to behavior problems. These dogs grow very rapidly between the age of four and seven months, making them susceptible to bone disorders. Normal play on grass is fine, and so are puppy agility classes. Golden Retriever Feeding Recommended daily amount: 2 to 3 cups of high-quality dry food a day, divided into two meals. NOTE: How much your adult dog eats depends on his size, age, build, metabolism, and activity level. It almost goes without saying that a highly active dog will need more than a couch potato dog. Keep your Golden in good shape by measuring his food and feeding him twice a day rather than leaving food out all the time. First, look down at him. You should be able to see a waist. Then place your hands on his back, thumbs along the spine, with the fingers spread downward. You should be able to feel but not see his ribs without having to press hard. They do well on a high-quality, low-calorie diet that keeps them from growing too fast. For more on feeding your Golden, see our guidelines for buying the right food , feeding your puppy , and feeding your adult dog. Some coats are wavy, some are straight. The fur feathers on the back of the front legs and underbody, with heavier feathering on the chest, back of the thighs, and tail. Golden Retrievers come in all shades of gold, from light to dark gold. Golden Retrievers shed moderately in the winter and summer, and heavily in the spring and fall. Daily brushing is recommended to prevent tangling, and once a week is the bare minimum. Your Golden will also need a bath at least once a month, often more frequently, to keep him looking and smelling clean. Daily brushing is even better if you want to prevent gum disease and bad breath. Short, neatly trimmed nails keep the feet in good condition. Dog toenails have blood vessels in them, and if you cut too far you can cause bleeding — and your dog may not cooperate the next time he sees the nail clippers come out. Fold-over ears create a warm, dark environment for bacteria or fungus to grow in, and breeds that have them — such as the Golden — are prone to ear infections. His ears should be checked weekly for redness or a bad odor, which can indicate an infection. Check them every time he gets wet, too. Handle his paws frequently — dogs are touchy about their feet — and look inside his mouth. As you groom, check for sores, rashes, or signs of infection such as redness, tenderness, or inflammation on the skin, in the nose, mouth, and eyes, and on the feet. Eyes should be clear, with no redness or discharge. Your careful weekly exam will help you spot potential health problems early. As with every breed, you should always teach children how to approach and touch dogs, and always supervise any interactions between dogs and young children to prevent any biting or ear or tail pulling on the part of either party. No dog, no matter how friendly, should ever be left unsupervised with a child. He enjoys the companionship of other dogs , and with proper introductions and training, can be trusted with cats, rabbits, and other animals. Golden Retriever Rescue Groups Goldens are often purchased without any clear understanding of what goes into owning one. There are many Goldens in need of adoption and or fostering. There are a number of rescues that we have not listed. Golden Retriever Club of America, Inc. Reputable breeders are committed to breeding healthy, well-socialized puppies that will make great companions. They will screen their breeding stock for health problems, socialize their puppies from a young age, and provide you with lifetime support. On the other hand, backyard breeders are more interested in making a profit than in producing healthy, well-adjusted dogs. They may not screen their breeding stock for health problems, and they may not socialize their puppies properly. As a result, puppies from backyard breeders are more likely to have both health and behavioral issues. More Info For You. My husband and I are bringing home our first puppy in September a goldendoodle and this was super helpful! Emily June 29, , am Thank you so much for this, Jen! I look forward to the post on favorite dog toys! We just got a puppy and, while its only been a week, we are definitely having some issues getting puppy to embrace his crate. He is doing really well with potty training, and has yet to have an accident in his crate, but soon after he enters his crate the howling begins. This way he associates it with a positive place. Also, leave treats in there. Some dogs do better with their crates covered so like drape a blanket over the sides so it feels more like a cave. You might also try placing a t-shirt or something that smells like you in there. Also, leave the door open all the time and praise him if he goes in on his own. Good luck! OH, what a difference! Long after they no longer needed their crates, we kept them and always left the door opened. They would go into them when they were tired, knowing they were in a safe place; their place. Friends always said to us that they would have a dog if it behaved like our dogs. Be consistent. Fun for all of you. I can definitely see how teaching while a puppy can make a huge difference. Looking forward to your next dog related posts :. Reply Link Megan June 29, , pm Ahh thank you for this post! My husband and I are looking into getting a pug puppy soon and these tips are so helpful. Looking forward to reading more posts on this, especially the crate training. Love the tips, we are still trying to stay the course with the UD group classes! Golden are the best! It has been such an eye-opening month with our new puppy. Our other dog is 8 so everything feels brand new. I actually wrote about it in my post for tomorrow, but a puppy is like a baby. My boyfriend and I are getting a golden pup in the fall and while I grew up with the breed I have never trained a pup on my own. We made the choice to get a puppy mostly to instil good habits and behaviour long term. So long story short, I would never put a puppy or young dog or any age in airplane cargo! Reply Link Megan June 30, , pm Good tips! Socializing him right away and crate training him were so key to having an awesome, well-adjusted dog! Reply Link Josi August 20, , pm Hello! Just wondering where you got your goldens? This really helped me figure out what to do when she gets here. Jen May 3, , pm YAY! Our 3rd Golden in about 33 years and know he has some big paws to fill Taegan was wonderful for 14 years. We are so excited!! I have a new English Cream Golden. I feel like I need to work for his affection. Great otherwise! Not super energetic. Bursts of energy followed up by lots of naps but never really interested in walks. First timer here. Your pup could really benefit from basic positive obedience! I would recommend seeking out an experienced trainer in your area to help you as your pup grows! Having a puppy in the home can be fantastic, but you also need to make sure that you can offer it the best as well. She has been really easy to house break. We are excited to bring her home. Thank you for the helpful tips. That is a good idea to make sure that we are committed to doing the work to train this dog. We do really want him to be well trained. Thanks for the tips! Thank you so much for this super informative post! Reply Link Jen January 22, , pm I always made sure she went before we got to the gym and walked her frequently. Meghan January 29, , am Thank you so much for the reply!! We kept each of our puppies on a leash in the house, never out of our sight except when they were in the crate for 4 months before we gradually gave them independence. We always messed with them and held them. They had accidents as you would expect until fully house trained at about 4 months, but never any destructive or aggressive behavior. We gave them plenty of tough chew toys. Also training classes. They were never nervous or skittish. They love to lay on us and never have had any trouble with grooming, food guarding, loud noises, children or other animals. Goldens are great dogs but like any dog, they can only know what you teach them. Great article!! Kathrinne May 5, , am Hi Jen, how old are your puppies when you let them go out? Jen May 5, , am What do you mean? Reply Link Carly September 8, , pm Thank you so much for your article! What would your input be? Do you think they would focus on each other more than their humans? Would 2 puppies be so much more difficult than 1? Any advice is greatly appreciated!! Love the name Zoey!! Any tips to Prevent that?? Reply Link Christine November 1, , am About to get golden 3. Learning all over about everything. Reply Link Jen November 1, , pm It is like starting over again but you will figure it out! Every pup is different but be patient and consistent! This is my first large dog breed so a little nervous. I read your post and you give wonderful tips that I will follow. Please let me know if it is safe to put a flea collar on the puppy. Thank you. Reply Link Jen January 29, , pm I would consult with your vet to see what they recommend for flea prevention and treatment. Also, about the scratching. It could be due to something else like an allergen outside. I have not had a dog in 3 years because I lost my last one in a painful way for me and I am afraid to get another one. I am now ready to get one and this page has helped me prepare for my new puppy. I am a 74 yr old male in pretty good shape no health issues, and retired so I should be around a while to look after a dog. My wife passed about four months ago so I guess I am looking to fill a void. I live in a single family home and have plenty of time to spare. Thanks Reply Link marion duffield April 14, , am I am picking my pup up in 2 weeks! This is the best AND most realistic article I have read about training…. My pup Tank will be 4 months when we get him. He is absolutely adorable. Have only seen photos. He lives with his breeder in Missouri and we live in Canada…. I am so excited for you!!!! Puppies are intense but so much fun. And wow, that is going to be an adventure! Reply Link Theresa April 30, , am Do you have suggestions about golden retriever puppy biting? We got ours at 7 weeks. She is now .How do we stop her from snapping and biting? She is smart and loving. The biting has been rough though. Can you help? But I love dogs soooo much. This info is everything to me. I love this post Soo much. Thanks a ton. You left puppy in car? Or what? Reply Link Madeline October 31, , pm I am picking up my 7 week old golden in 2 days! I am so excited! How did you go out taking him places before he had his full shots? I want to socialize him, and of course potty train him immediately, but obviously there are risks. Whats your take on this? So the whole crate training thing is not going so well. She hates it. Emily Camalo April 2, , pm Hi! Really appreciate you sharing all of this advice! It was super valuable. Reply Link Julie April 11, , am Loved your comments. I have a 9 week double doodle. I have crate trained since day 1 and she has been really good, day 1 upset for a couple of minutes. Day 2 no problem at all. Now just the occasional cry when I leave her but that is over with in a very short space of time. I also leave a low radio on for her. She uses the garden most of the time for toileting, but occasionally she will come into the house and do another wee. The problem I have at the moment is trying to stop her biting. I have tried the gentle command which she listens to some of the time. And I have tried standing and turning my back on her so she realises I am not playing when she bites, but she will then go for trousers or feet, which I try my best to ignore, or she will just go off and do something else like chew a mat or something which is a no no. Any ideas? Regards Reply Link Stephanie January 25, , am Really great info, thank you for your article. Our puppy arrives in 5 days and we have been preparing for months. Your advice is. Very helpful. Blessings to you.
However, you only need to stimulate the puppy if it is eating and not with the mother. Keep the puppy warm and continue rubbing it to help it breathe and move. This should be continued until the puppy is under veterinary supervision. For a puppy with anasarca to have a chance of survival, it needs to be treated by a veterinarian. If your dog gave birth at home, then you need to take the puppy to a veterinary office right away. If your normal veterinary office is closed when the mother dog gives birth, then you should take the affected puppy to the closest 24 veterinary emergency clinic. As soon as a puppy is born with anasarca it should begin treatment to stand any chance of survival. Treatment usually includes giving the puppy a diuretic to reduce the amount of fluid the puppy is retaining. If the condition is mild, the puppies can go on to live normal lives. Even with prompt treatment, however, a puppy with a severe case of anasarca has a very slim chance of survival. If the puppy has a severe case of anasarca, it has a very low chance of survive. If this is the case with your puppy, then you should focus on making sure it is comfortable and pain free instead of focusing on recovery. If it doesn't, then your veterinarian will have some suggestions about how to stop the puppies' suffering. This could include keeping it warm and giving it medication to alleviate any pain. In some cases, this could mean compassionate euthanasia. Prepare yourself that the outcome may be death. In many cases of anasarca, the puppy is still born or dies quickly after birth. Medical articles It may sound like an animated character straight out of a Disney movie, but anasarca is, sadly, a life-threatening condition common in Bulldogs , but recognized in other breeds as well. It can theoretically affect any breed of dog, although it is most common in brachycephalic breeds, such as English and French Bulldogs , Bullmastiffs , Pugs , and Boston Terriers. Anasarca puppies, also referred to as walrus puppies, or occasionally water puppies, rubber puppies, or swimmer puppies, are born with an abnormal and lethal amount of fluid under their skin. Anasarca has been recognized for many years, yet as with many canine neonatal illnesses, there is a discouraging lack of knowledge of the true causes of anasarca, and much of what experts believe about it is speculative. When and Why It Occurs The condition appears to develop in the later part of gestation; puppies can be born up to four or five times their normal weight, as a result of the excess fluid. One or all of the puppies may be affected. Survival rates are low, and because of the abnormally large size of the puppies, a cesarean delivery is necessary. Experts consider anasarca to be a congenital problem—meaning it exists at or before birth—but it is unclear whether or not it is always inherited. Bulldogs and French Bulldogs are the only two breeds where anasarca is known to be a hereditary condition, although the mode of inheritance is unknown. In some breeds where the condition is rare, it is thought to be less likely to be inherited. The assumption is that if the genetic potential were there, breeders would be seeing a lot more of it. Environmental factors influencing the condition have been discussed and debated on the internet, but again this is speculative. For example, some breeders, whose dogs have produced anasarca puppies, suggest the culprit may be a high sodium diet, which they believe causes the female to retain water. Experts caution that there is no scientific data to substantiate environmental claims, including those of a high-sodium diet. A Lack of Symptoms To further complicate the matter, symptoms are limited or seemingly non-existent in most cases. This, understandably, catches many breeders and veterinarians off guard. Some experts say that one indicator may be additional weight gain by the female, as a result of the extra fluid. Others observe a listing or shifting of the puppies from one side to the other. Again, experts caution against reading too much into these observations, as there is no viable scientific data to substantiate these symptoms. Although survival rates are low, some water puppies do survive provided they receive immediate veterinary treatment. That's why it's a good idea to get pet insurance that covers hereditary conditions if you end up with a water puppy. Theoretically, surviving puppies should live an otherwise healthy, normal life. The problem is that many puppies do not survive, with many being euthanized shortly after birth. Therefore, as with most everything pertaining to neonatal illnesses, little or no scientific documentation exists regarding the long-term effects of congenital edema in puppies. Have you ever heard of Bulldog Water Puppies? Dog lovers rarely talk about water puppies despite being common. This is a potentially fatal condition that is commonly found in short-nosed dog breeds such as Bulldogs , French Bulldogs , Boston Terrier , Pugs , and more but it has also been seen in other dog breeds such a Labrador Retrievers and Yorkshire Terriers. Water Puppy Syndrome can affect only one or two puppies, or even the entire litter. These puppies are born suffering from Edema —an abnormal accumulation of serous fluid in different organs, cavities or body tissues. Water puppies can be 2 to 4 times larger than normal pups in the litter. Sadly, most of them immediately pass away or are stillborn. Water Puppies who are born alive may be categorized as mild, medium or severely affected. Puppies born with Water Puppy Syndrome are also found to be suffering from a combination of vertebral column defects and other abnormalities like cleft palates. What causes Bulldog Water Puppies? In fact, pregnant dogs need plenty of water because the amniotic fluid changes constantly. Signs your Bulldog is going to have Water Puppies There is no surefire way to tell if your Bulldog is going to have water puppies. But here are some signs to watch out for: Drinking unusually larger amounts of water, Shiny-looking something like onion-skin teats and surrounding tissue, Nipple-discharge early in pregnancy. An ultrasound is thought to be a better tool to detect these Water Puppies. Do Bulldog Water Puppies live long? Survival rates in Bulldog Water Puppies are very low. Sometimes, veterinarians recommend putting the puppy down. But some Bulldog breeders report that mild to medium Bulldog Water Puppies who survived the first two to three days grew up to be normal puppies. However, most of these survivors have underlying health problems like cleft palates. A Bulldog breeder also told Bulldog Guide that a couple of Bulldog Water Puppies he took care of had one odd thing in common. One of the surviving Anasarca puppies Toto took care of. He is now 3 years old. The report written by Dr. Constanza Bini et al. But after performing a C-section on the 55th day of pregnancy, they found out that two of the Bulldog puppies have different degrees of subcutaneous edema. Unfortunately, the first and biggest puppy they took out was dead. The second puppy, a male Bulldog, was suffering from mild Anasarca and fortunately survived after performing a series of treatments. The third Bulldog was a normal and healthy pup. Despite managing to live, Bulldog Water Puppy survivors are recommended to be neutered or spayed and spared from breeding. How to help Bulldog Water Puppies? There is no sure way to treat and save an Anasarca from death. But veterinarians have been performing a series of procedures to help Anasarca or Water puppies. Water Puppies must be given treatment as soon as possible. Then, stimulate his genitalia to encourage him to urinate. Bini have been using Lasix, a brand name of the chemical furosemide. This chemical is a diuretic-saluretic, which slows down the re-absorption of sodium. Furosemide must be given immediately intravenously or intramuscularly to the puppy after birth. The administration of Furosemide can be done again every 30 to 45 minutes. But never do this more than three times as it can cause dehydration. Stimulating the pups to pee is also important and must be done every two to three minutes. The vet can also use elastic bandages gently wrapped around the pups to help push out fluid. Mildly-affected Water Puppies can take 1 to 2 hours to breathe normally while moderately-affected water pups take longer — about one and a half hours to four hours — to breathe normally. Severely affected water puppies are very difficult to save and they drown from the fluids and die just within 30 minutes after birth. Severely-affected Water Puppies are known to split in half the abdomen just from handling. How to prevent your Bulldog from having water babies Since the real cause of this condition is still not known, there is no surefire way to prevent it. However, veterinarians and experts recommend the following: Feed a pregnant Bulldog low-salt diet, Reduce — if not remove — anything that can cause potential trauma, Administer autogenous minute virus vaccine if minute virus is suspected. How to Participate in Anasarca Research Bulldog owners and breeders are encouraged to participate in genetic research to identify and determine a marker for Anasarca. The researchers of the study are requesting DNA samples from affected puppies and parents who produced Anasarca or Water Puppies. This research is being conducted at the University of Illinois. If you wish to be involved with the study, you may contact Dr. Michael at mwhughes usc. Leave a Reply: Leave a comment below and share your thoughts. Donate to Support this Research Program Area Abstract Dystocia is one of the most significant reproductive health concerns for dog owners and breeders. While there can be many causes of dystocia, the occurrence of so-called "water" or "walrus" puppies is one of the more common reasons within particular breeds. Water puppies suffer from the abnormal accumulation of body fluids, called anasarca, resulting in a generalized swelling of the body. Normal delivery through the birth canal then becomes difficult or even impossible, oftentimes requiring intervention by caesarean section. Water puppies are generally stillborn or die shortly after birth. While anasarca affects many dog breeds, it appears to be more frequent in the brachycephalic breeds including the Bulldog, French bulldog, Pug, Boston terrier and others. Due to the known genetic relationship between these breeds and the recurrence of anasarca puppies in specific matings, it is strongly believed that there is a significant genetic risk factor associated with this problem. Modern genetic tools and techniques have greatly improved the ability to identify specific variations in DNA which may be responsible for such traits. Thus, in an effort initiated by the Bulldog Club of America and Bulldog Club of America Charitable Health Fund, samples from newborn puppies with anasarca, their parents, and non-affected puppies have been collected, and will be utilized to analyze for a genetic basis of anasarca in an effort to develop a DNA-based test that can be used to screen for and reduce the incidence of this devastating disease. Publication s Hekman, J. S Research. Water Walrus Puppies Anasarca puppies Page 3 "My pup was a singleton , born to my girl who had had a litter the previous year, a litter of 6 normal healthy English Cocker Spaniel pups. This time we used the son of the boy we used last year. This was only his second litter too. His first a healthy litter of 8 pups. Sadly the pup was severely affected, as the pictures show. First and foremost, I would like to thank you for all of the valuable information I found on your website. While re-reading your posted information I came across the section on Water Puppies, and after being told that an x-ray showed that my female was carrying one puppy that appeared to be twice as large as the others, and what I thought to be a strange shiny look to her breast and nipple area, I began to worry. I contacted my daughter who will be a Dr. She explained that the occurrence of "Water Puppies" is rare and that I need not worry as pups of the same litter are often many different sizes. Maybe it was a coincidence that I came upon your site and all of the information you provided on "what to do when things go wrong".In June my female Labrador delivered three healthy pups followed by a "Water Puppy" which was very large and she was having great difficulty pushing her out. I followed the advice and " feathered " her cervix to see if it would help her labor progress, and it was almost instantly helpful. The fourth puppy water puppy was born dead, her skin was so swollen that it was split about her belly and across her face, it also appeared that she may have also had a clef palate. The fifth pup was born healthy with no complications. My own veterinarian had never heard of this before, and neither had my brother-in-law who is also a vet. I have included a picture that I took of the "Water Puppy" four hours after birth so you may share it with your readers. The swelling had decreased considerably and absorbed into the white towel that I had wrapped her in. This is a French Bulldog male puppy. He was delivered via c-section and lived about 30 minutes. I believe, according to the Dr. Never in my long-time practice have I seen anything like this. The mother dog did not have any unusual signs of any kind during pregnancy. Male French Bulldog water puppy that lived about 30 minutes after delivery Male French Bulldog water puppy that lived about 30 minutes after delivery I bred my French Bulldog two years ago and she too had a water pup. She only had two puppies, one was perfectly fine and the other was a water puppy. Since we were already planning a C-section birth, we already knew there was a water puppy. The vet and his staff worked feverishly to revive this pup. Miraculously, the puppy made it and actually started to nurse. However, we noticed right away he could not keep the milk down. Every time it nursed, milk would come back up out of his nose and mouth. The vet took an X-ray and unfortunately found a really terrible birth defect; the esophagus was not connected to the stomach so the milk had nowhere to go but back out. My heart just sank knowing what a fighter this puppy was to be able to come out of that first ordeal of being a water puppy and now we had to put him down humanely so he would not starve to death. I too was put off from breeding after this as I got so attached to this puppy in such a short amount of time. Thank you again to everyone who shared their stories as I am still so sad from that event but know I'm certainly not alone. However, take heart, the other puppy is doing so well that he's even being shown and has won some ribbons to date! Pregnant dams need lots of water, as the amniotic fluid is constantly changing. Water babies are like babies that become anemic low blood in utero. They get severely edematous. This is usually due to parvovirus or an immune response blood group incompatibility. Image of a newborn water puppy— MistyTrails plays "midwoof" to many local breeders. Water Puppy Syndrome Edema:an abnormal accumulation of serous fluid in various organs, cavities, or tissues of the body. We can learn a bit from "people" medicine—water babies hydrops usually occurs from lack of red blood cells in the baby as a result of an infection or immune reaction. It can affect only one pup in a litter or the entire litter. Water puppies are impossible to deliver naturally, as they are huge, swollen, waterlogged puppies. A C-section is a must, as these puppies are generally two to four times the size of their littermates. These pups range from mild, medium to severely affected. If your dam is pushing on a single puppy, has contractions for two hours without puppy presentation into the birth canal, especially after delivering one or two normal pups, you should seek veterinary assistance, as the remaining pups can die along with the dam. This is a Medical Emergency! There are many opinions on why these water pups develop; some say it is congenital or environmental, some say diet, trauma to the dam, or even a virus. The condition is also occasionally seen in other dog breeds. An x-ray does not always show the larger size of these puppies, as the weight is mostly fluid. An ultrasound is thought to detect these puppies. Water pups are usually born alive, limp and weak, and they look like someone blew them up like a balloon. The dam was supplying the needed oxygen and nutrition through the placenta and cord, but soon after birth the medium to severely affected pup will suffocate by the pressure of the fluid. Some people report the mildly affected pups that survive the first two to three days turned out to be normal pups. Others say there were other underlying problems and their water pups died within the first week. The choice to try and save or to let the pup go without suffering will be between you and your vet, how much experience you have behind you, and if you are willing to put in the time PLUS be prepared for heartache. Trying to save these pups at this time is considered experimental. The cause and treatment of this condition are unknown at this time. Treatment: Treatment needs to be given right away for a mildly affected pup. Elevate the head and extend the neck for a more clear airway. To encourage urination, run one or two fingers over the genitalia. Some veterinarians have recently had great success using Lasix in saving water puppies. Lasix is the brand name of the chemical furosemide. Furosemide is a diuretic-saluretic, which inhibits the re-absorption of sodium salt. The drug is administered intravenously immediately after birth of the water puppy. Administer furosemide Lasix. Caution: more than three could cause dehydration. Keep the pups warm and stimulate urination as described above every —two to three minutes. Elastic bandages have also been used to push out fluid not too tight. Mildly affected pups can take one to two hours to breathe normally. Moderately affected pups take 90 minutes to four hours to breathe normally. Medium to severely affected pups are difficult to save; they usually drown within 30 minutes. Severely bloated pups have been known to split open at the abdomen just from handling. Autopsies have shown that the organs are saturated in fluid and the life sustaining organs cannot function, causing the pups to drown. Theories: An inuterine reaction to sodium, or an inability to process proteins. Hypothyrodism, as well as an inability of the lymphmatic system to drain effectively due to the anatomy. None of these ideas have ever been proven. Water puppies are often seen associated with a combination of vertebral column defects and often have further abnormalities, particularly cleft palates. Some Findings on Causes still not proven Congenital anasarca congenital generalized subcutaneous edema. The etiology of congenital anasarca is not well defined prenatal cardiovascular anomaly A traumatic origin with disruption of the placenta as a fetus suffering from anasarca is usually the sole occupant of a uterine horn filled with a large amount of hemorrhagic fluid. Could be caused by a virus, it has been attributed to the after-effects of the mother's oronasal infection with the minute virus during the last trimester of pregnancy associated with myocarditis. In the latter case, elasticity of the fetus' skin allows extravasation of transudate that is compensated for by the immediate supply of fluid via the umbilical cord. These puppies usually die within less than 36 hours. Prevention Low-salt diet. Reduce potential trauma isolate pregnant dams Autogenous minute virus vaccine in the case of suspicion of minute virus anarsarca en-zootic within the same breeding facility According to doctors, human babies can be born with this too. Human version: Fetal hydrops the cause is not yet known, but there are many theories In humans, edema is considered a congenital syndrome that happens in utero, and doctors figure it is most often caused by a virus slap cheek virus, and a human parvo-type virus B or it can be caused by a liver malfunction. In the U. Figures from Thailand suggest an estimated incidence of one case per , pregnancies. It is not a labor-induced issue, it happens prenatally for unknown reasons. There are photos of dwarf looking puppies that may fall into this category. If you suspect your dam may deliver water puppies consult your vet. Courtesy of MistyTrails Havanese.
