You will take them for the second round at weeks old and the third and final vaccine will be administered at weeks old. Review the vaccination guideline attached below from Dr. We discourage the leptospirosis vaccine strongly and want you to know that if this is administered, the health warranty on your puppy will be in jeopardy. We also encourage you to separate the rabies vaccine by 3 weeks from all other vaccines. Vaccinations are an important part of your puppy's preventative health care. Vaccinations should be given at 8, 11, 14 weeks or 7, 10, 13, and 16 weeks of age if vaccine. Some high risk areas may require an additional parvo booster at 24 weeks of age. Your puppy will need to be vaccinated at 8, 12, and 16 weeks. His vaccination program will continue with your veterinarian. Rabies inoculation is a single dose, usually at four months of age or older, with a repeat vaccination every one to three years. Check with your veterinary facility. Socialization is so important at this time- actually most critical between 4 and 16 weeks- but ongoing for the first year. Pay special attention to this time frame- this is when your puppy learns to grow to be a confident friendly adult. Careful, positive exposure now to all those things he will encounter in his adult life, from car rides to children of all ages to individuals outside of his family, and walks and cats too, and other unfamiliar dogs is essential for a happy well-adjusted dog. I want to mention that at 12 weeks of age, your puppy will experience an ultra-sensitive shy stage. Try not to introduce too much at this time- especially things that could be perceived as fearful, aggressive or over stimulating. You will be walking a fine line between proper socialization and health concerns. Stay vigilant and use good common sense when exposing your puppy to the world. Never, never use pet rest areas; Dog Parks and pet stores are a big no until all immunizations are complete. A darling little girl from a previous litter, Ivy, died 3 weeks after being with her new family. They were anxious for her to go to a dog park with friends despite the warnings and contracted Parvo. She died 36 hours later. So, please, take care while sharing your world — enjoy all the new learning experiences with your puppy while sensibly protecting him. Crate Training I encourage all new puppy owners to use a crate for their puppy. Buy a crate that will accommodate your puppy when he is fully grown. Choose one that has a divider to limit his space initially. This will help with housebreaking. I particularly like the wire crates that have 2 doors; one on the side and front for more placement options. Any time you cannot keep an eye on your puppy, putting him in his crate will keep him safe. Make going in the crate fun! I always give my dogs and puppies a small treat when entering their crate. Never use the crate as a form of punishment Whining: your puppy may or may not whine initially while in his crate. He has been exposed to a crate for several weeks and is familiar with going in and out at will. Do not give in; stay strong- they will learn that being in their crate is a part of everyday life and never a bad thing. Crating, both at night and when you are unable to supervise, is the safest option for your lively and inquisitive puppy. It will also protect your home, woodwork, rugs, table legs, chair rungs, sofa corners, tennis shoes, homework, book bags and anything else that your puppy is convinced is a toy and needs a good chew. Tip: Bitter Apple spray will help deter your puppy from choosing sprayed surfaces as chew toys. Housebreaking This is where your crate becomes an invaluable tool. No animal willingly soils his environment crate. Limiting his space helps to train your puppy to hold his business for longer periods of time. Your puppy will not know how to tell you he needs to go outside so I suggest taking him out every hour or so until he is older and able to go for longer periods of time. Key times to encourage your puppy to potty outside are: When he wakes up-in the morning and after a nap- after playing for an hour, after eating, and of course, hurry when you see him running in circles! Try to take him to the same spot each time and shower praises on your clever puppy when he goes. Remember, he will not know to go outside exclusively for many months. Positive praise for the job well done works. Punishment for accidents, and there will be accidents, may make your puppy fearful and confused with the whole process causing setbacks in the progress he has made. Note: Please remember to give this little puppy time to understand what it is that you expect from him. But most of all, kindness and patience should always temper all parts of the training process. Feeding 4 times a day until they are 4 months of age 3 times a day until they are 6 months of age 2 times a day after 6 months, even as an adult dog Your puppy has been eating Paw Tree chicken and oatmeal formulation. Plenty of fresh water should be available all day, especially during meals. They are at risk and most prone to drowning. Many pups will leap before they look or simply fall in. Their inexperience, curiosity and fearlessness prompt them to explore but are usually unable to climb out of even small bodies of water. The steep sides of pools and hot tubs are especially dangerous. Your Doodle comes from two breeds that adore a swim and the water is just about the best thing there is, but until they are old enough to find their way out of it, supervision is a must. You will have to teach them where the pool steps or exits are located and help them learn how to navigate their way to safety. Biting When puppies play with one another and explore, they use their mouths; they naturally do the same when they interact with people. Biting in puppies is absolutely normal and therefore a challenge to convince your new pup that it is not acceptable behavior to treat his human as he would his littermate. Do not forget when teaching your pup not to bite, that nipping and mouthing is simply common puppy behavior and that the worst thing you can do is physically punish a pup for something that is natural for him. Discouraging this natural behavior can be trying at times however take solace in the fact that once puppies acquire their adult teeth this behavior disappears. Most normal puppy biting just goes away on its own. Labradoodles are not known for being mouthy dogs so keep in mind that this stage does have an end. Meanwhile, the best approach to this problem is the use of positive distraction and the encouragement and praise of acceptable behavior. Have a favorite toy at the ready and get those teeth into something other than your hand, toe or shoe. Blowing in their face will distract them as well. Leptospirosis Leptospirosis is a bacterial infection caused by the Leptospira bacteria. Most commonly, pups are infected from drinking water from lakes and rivers that are contaminated with infected urine, coming in contact with infected wildlife or farm animals, or from contact with rodents or other dogs. Common symptoms of leptospirosis in dogs include fever, stiffness and pain in muscles and joints, shivering, weakness, depression, loss of appetite, excessive thirst and urination, extreme dehydration, jaundice, difficulty breathing, or kidney failure. Parvovirus Parvovirus is one of the most dangerous, highly infectious diseases that often affects puppies and unvaccinated dogs. Parvo causes gastrointestinal complications like lethargy and depression, loss of appetite, vomiting, severe diarrhea, fever or hypothermia, severe weight loss, weakness, stomach pain, and rapid heartbeat. All of these symptoms lead to severe dehydration and affect the immune system. Canine coronavirus CCoV has been around for ages. The most common symptoms of canine coronavirus include vomiting, diarrhea, and loss of appetite. Bordetella Bronchiseptica Bordetella bronchiseptica is the leading cause of kennel cough. It can also be transmitted between dogs and cats. Lyme Disease Just like humans, dogs are at a risk of contracting Lyme disease through infected tick bites. The most common symptoms of Lyme disease are loss of appetite, lethargy, fever, lameness of limbs, swelling of joints, or overall stiffness, discomfort, and pain. It can also lead to kidney failure, or severe cardiac or neurological problems, which can prove to be fatal. Rabies Rabies is one of the most dangerous viral diseases. This disease attacks the brain and spinal cord, and if not treated quickly, it typically leads to death. The most common symptoms of rabies in dogs are anxiety, aggression, becoming restless and irritable, sometimes becoming overly excited or very uninterested, fever, difficulty swallowing, excessive drooling, stumbling, seizures, or paralysis. Puppies usually receive their first rabies shots around 3 months old, and they should be boosted as required by the law in your state. Heartworm Puppies and dogs can contract heartworm even just from a single mosquito bite. Heartworm spreads worms in the heart and pulmonary arteries, sometimes even to the liver and kidneys. As these worms can grow as long as 14 inches, they can block the arteries and injure the organs. However, your dog might start showing symptoms like lethargy, coughing, loss of appetite, or difficulty breathing at later stages. When Should You Start Puppy Vaccinations Typically, puppies go to their forever homes with at least some vaccines that have already been administered at the shelter or kennel. Now your job is to continue with the puppy vaccine schedule. Whether you adopt your pup from a shelter or a breeder, you can usually count on their previous caretaker having administered at least some age-appropriate vaccinations. At this time, you will probably start to see your dog slowly increasing the amount of time it is resting and sleeping. How long has the Labradoodle been known as a breed? Labradoodles have been intentionally bred in Australia since .Wally Conran, a breeder of guide dogs, was the first breeder, using a standard poodle and Labrador retriever. The main goal was to create a dog that had the laid back nature of the Labrador coupled with the intelligence and allergy friendly coat of the Poodle. As the breed gained popularity, many kennels have bred and cross-bred the Labradoodle. What is an Australian Labradoodle? Over time infusions of some other breeds were added to target smaller sizes and more consistent, lower maintenance coats. The breed then became known as the Australian Labradoodle. Both the Labrador Retriever and Poodle breeds are originally working dogs that specialized in water-based retrieving alongside their humans. There is some modern variation, such as in working and show bred strains of each breed. But, generally, you can expect their offspring to be intelligent, social, and very energetic. Breeders can also choose to breed certain traits into personality. For instance, some breeders may try to breed the most social dogs together, or those that were fastest to learn obedience, in order to produce puppies with the same traits. But, this is something to discuss with your breeder, if you need a Labradoodle for a certain working purpose. Generally, f2b Labradoodles will be friendly, clever, and playful dogs. Particularly if you have socialized them properly from a young age. They can get along well in homes with other pets and even with young children, but remember that they can be quite energetic and can grow quite large. Are f2b Labradoodles Hypoallergenic? The term hypoallergenic can be quite misleading. All dogs have the allergens that can trigger an allergic reaction, but rather than in their fur, the allergens are found in their dander, saliva, and even urine. So why does a dog like the Poodle tend to trigger allergies less than a Lab? Poodle fur is low shedding. And, the very tight curls or cords of their fur will catch any saliva-coated hair ir dander that does shed. This will trap the allergens in their coat, which can form painful knots and increase grooming needs, but will lower the amount of allergens around your home. F2b Labradoodles are more likely to inherit Poodle traits, like tightly curled fur and low shedding coats. So, an f2b Labradoodle might not trigger your allergies so much, and may be better than a Labradoodle with more Labrador DNA. However, because curly fur will trap dander and fur that sheds, you will still need to come into contact with it when grooming, and Poodle fur needs much more grooming than straight fur. Not all dogs will trigger allergies, even dogs of the same breed. Another tip is to let someone else in the house, someone without allergies, do the grooming. An f2b Doodle has been backcrossed to a Poodle, but an f2 Doodle has not. This means they often express more Poodle traits in their appearance and temperament. In contract, an f1 Doodle has two purebred parents. It is a first generation mix. So, it will have equal amounts of Labrador and Poodle influence. This means that f1 Labradoodles can look very different from one another — even those from the same litter. And, they are much more likely to have the high shedding double coat of the Labrador. Is an f2b Labradoodle Right for Me? An f2b Labradoodle will usually have a low shedding coat, with curly or wavy fur. Their exact appearance will vary a little, depending on the traits that they inherit from their parents. So, owners of any Doodle must be prepared to offer them plenty of opportunities for exercise and mental stimulation every single day. They can also grow to be quite large dogs, so basic obedience training is a must. As well as proper socialization from a young age. The Canine Digestive System There are significant differences between the way dogs and people digest food. Over-feeding, a lack of adequate fiber in the diet, and overgrowths of bacteria in the digestive tract can all cause recurring puppy diarrhea if not handled correctly. However, we argue that there does not need to be such an extreme change of diet as some vets recommend. Overfeeding Most dogs and especially puppies will get loose stools when they are over-fed. Usually, stools caused by overeating look like cow patties. When we have a female nursing a large litter of puppies, we intentionally feed them far more than they are accustomed to in order to keep weight on them. All of them will have cow patty type poop while we are heavily feeding them. Their poop returns to normal when the feeding returns to normal. Even adults struggle to maintain normal poop when they are overfed. Overfeeding puppies will have an even stronger impact. We have had families with our puppies call us reporting that their puppy has begun having chronically loose poop. The first questions we ask are about what the poop looks like and the weight of the puppy. If the puppy is over the weight ranges in our growth chart , the puppy is having loose cow patty looking poop, and the puppy is acting normally in other ways, the culprit is almost certainly too much food. There are too many breeds to keep up with normal weights for all breeds at all ages. Check with a reputable breeder who knows your breed to determine normal growth rates. Also, consider that various lines within breeds can grow at different rates. Another very important fact to keep in mind is that unlike people, dogs will grow too fast before they will grow fat. Dogs especially puppies do not always look fat when they are being overfed. In fact, unless they are grossly overfed, they usually appear normal to the untrained eye until they are an adult. Sensitive stomach foods ARE easier on the digestive tract, but this is a case where these foods are not necessary. Not Enough Fiber A second very common cause of frequent loose poop and diarrhea is an inadequate amount of fiber in the dog food. Many puppies cannot tolerate rich foods especially grain-free foods until they are older and have more mature digestive systems. Many puppies and dogs need SOME grain in their food in order to maintain firm poop for life. Give about two tablespoons for a pound Golden Retriever. Puppies and 5 Star High Protein Dog Foods In our early years of breeding, we were committed to feeding the very best puppy foods to our puppies. We still have the same commitment. However, we have learned quite a bit about which foods actually are the very best. Anyway, for several years, we started our puppies on several of the most expensive foods on the market. Then, we used Acana before they changed their formula and moved their facility out of Canada. With almost every litter, there was at least one puppy that struggled with loose stools. To combat the stools, we added fiber either rice or pumpkin and the problem resolved. We decided to try a food with a little grain. We were pleasantly surprised that our puppies did much better on foods with some grain. Higher levels of meat protein are healthy for dogs. Dogs were created to eat meat. The higher the protein, the more loose poop you will see. However, higher amounts of meat protein also make a food more nutritious. You must feed the right balance of protein and fiber. When we started feeding TLC to our puppies, we had virtually no loose stools except for the very occasional bacterial overgrowth that is discussed in the next section. If changing foods, make sure you scroll down to read the section on how to change foods. Having firm poop is important. However, it is even more important that you not sacrifice on good nutrition. They are very similar. There are only two differences between the puppy food and the adult food. The first difference is that the puppy food has a little bit more protein and a little less grain. The second difference is that the adult food has glucosamine. For the purposes of controlling loose stools, the additional grain in the dog food is all that matters. These foods fix the loose poop because they are low in protein and high in fiber. These veterinary diets are fortified with the necessary vitamins because most of the primary ingredients have little intrinsic nutritional value of their own. Sensitive stomach foods can be a good temporary fix, but there is no reason to leave most puppies or dogs on such a food for life. Look for a food with SOME grain for the long term. However, it is highly unlikely that it is necessary to keep your dog on an extremely high fiber, low protein specialty diet for life. Dogs that are fed the same food on a daily basis will probably not have the correct kind of good bacteria in their gut to properly digest a brand new food. They need to be acclimated to the new food gradually over a few days instead of having an abrupt change. Adding probiotics will also make the food change go smoother and quicker if need be. Take it slow. Bacterial Overgrowth A third common cause of puppy diarrhea is bacterial overgrowth. All puppies and dogs have bacteria in their digestive track to some degree. A good immune system will keep these bacteria under control. However, bacteria will tend to overgrow in puppies and even in dogs in at least three different common conditions: when a dog is under stress, when he is habitually eating junk, or when he has a poor or immature immune system. Unfortunately, puppies often meet all three conditions, especially when first changing homes. Stress A very common cause of bacterial overgrowth is stress. Some of our dogs have had this type diarrhea occasionally when they first start going to dog shows. However, once we return home, the diarrhea goes away on its own and the more shows dogs go to the less likely they are to experience the accompanying diarrhea. It is also common for some puppies to experience diarrhea when first changing homes. Our socialization program at Summer Brook is so intensive that we have very few that experience diarrhea shortly after leaving us. However, if you have a puppy who started having diarrhea right after getting in your home, it very well could be that stress is causing an overgrowth of bacteria. Weakened or Immature Immune System The second cause of bacterial overgrowth is a weakened or immature immune system. Dogs who have been over-vaccinated or neutered early or fed a poor diet will be more likely to have weak immune systems. In addition, it takes time for young puppies to develop strong immune systems. However, with good care from a human family, immune systems will gradually get stronger. See our pages on Puppy Care for more information on how to build a strong immune system. Along with all the junk that puppies sometimes eat, there is going to be bacteria. As puppies get older, their immune system will take care of it and the gut bacteria will stay in check. You might also need to occasionally give your puppy a MILD antibiotic. However, we do not let diarrhea go on for more than a couple of days. Tylan If after two days, diarrhea is continuing, we like to use Tylan for bacterial overgrowth in puppies. If given early before diarrhea gets out of control, Tylan will get the bacteria back under control after the first dose. There is no need to continue giving the Tylan after the problem is resolved unlike with other antibiotics for other problems. You need to merely give your puppy a little help in controlling the bacteria. You can give it twice a day if necessary. Most veterinarians recommend Metronidazole Metro for short for these types of issues. However, we think that Metro is an overkill and is stronger than necessary. Tylan used to be sold over the counter until around or .It is a very safe antibiotics that is even prescribed for long periods of time for chronic problems. We are definitely not advocating long-term use of Tylan, but are merely pointing out its safety. Tylan has also been used to stop tear staining in small breeds with white coats. If it can safely be used over long periods of time without side effects for many dogs, I feel much more comfortable using it for occasional loose stools than I do in using Metro. Metro works, but so does Tylan. Probiotics Whenever giving antibiotics to dogs or to people for that matter , give a probiotic along with the antibiotic. The good bacteria in a healthy digestive tract is necessary for the proper digestion of the food. It is actually best to give the probiotic a few hours after giving the antibiotic.
