Seems like a great day to go for a swim with your Bulldog, right? Not so fast. Because Bulldogs are hefty yet dense, you may wonder if your Bulldog will sink or float. Most Bulldogs can swim, but not very well. Features of their facial structure, such as a short nasal passage, require Bulldogs to tilt their heads up while in water. As a result, swimming is much more difficult for Bulldogs compared to other breeds. Bulldogs just require more training and patience to learn. Plus, there are things to know before you send your Bulldog into the pool. We look into all the physical qualities that suggest a Bulldog may not be great at swimming. Forget the retrieving — they have a difficult time simply swimming! Instead, Bulldogs were bred for an illegal bloodsport, that is, bull-baiting. Even though there are plenty of non-water dog breeds that are excellent swimmers, the Bulldog is not one of them. So why is it that Bulldogs are less capable of this popular physical activity when compared to other dog breeds? They all seem to have a much more difficult time staying afloat. In the dog world, we call these type of dogs, brachycephalic dogs. These breeds with brachycephaly have many ailments and potential health concerns primarily due to a short nasal passages. For example, Dr. Rowena Packer DVM claims that this facial structure restricts airflow and can make it difficult to breath. In order for these Bulldogs to get sufficient oxygen during swims, they will need to tilt their heads upwards while in the water. With such a disadvantage in the water, Bulldogs can easily drown without proper supervision of equipment. Fat is made up of saturated oils, which are likely to float on water. When our Bulldog was a puppy, we took him to a lake where he was swimming. Excited to see the lake, he ran down the pier and sank like a rock. Of course, this may not be the case for all Bulldogs. After all, these dogs are very prone to obesity and developing fat. Imagine this: you have a rock and a piece of wood that weighed the same. Throw them both into the water. Which is more likely to sink, and sink quicker. Most likely the compact rock. A Bulldog may sink in a similar fashion if not careful. For example, some Corgis famously known for their short stubby legs are decent swimmers. They have a lot of power in their thighs, which help them propel in water. However, when you combine this dwarfism trait with all the other physical difficulties that a Bulldog has, it makes it that much more difficult to swim. Despite popular belief, the Bulldog is actually a true dwarf breed, according to I Heart Dogs — like with the Welsh Corgi or Dachshund. A dwarf dog breed is characterized as a breed with abnormally short legs compared to the rest of the body or to standard dogs. So as you can imagine, having a short legs make it a lot more difficult for dwarf dogs to paddle. Is Your Bulldog a Good Swimmer? In fact, there are plenty of videos of skilled Bulldogs swimming on YouTube. Though, plenty of them have practiced and use safety precautions. Here are 10 owner responses from the popular Bulldogs Subreddit and other forums. We take him to the beach with a minimum of 3 people so we can catch him in the water and turn him back to shore. My Bully is a great swimmer, but it really tires him out fast. With preparations and equipment, all Bulldogs can enjoy this wonderful activity too! But make sure they will have supervision at all times while in water. Just remember that you should never force your Bulldog into the water. If they like it, great! If not, you can try again some other time. When it comes to teaching your Bulldog how to swim, patience and consistency are key. Use a Life Jacket for Bulldogs Before anything else, I strongly suggest you get your Bulldog a life jacket prior to swimming and training sessions. A life jacket helps even the playing field. With that said, the best life jacket that we currently use with our dogs is the Kygen Outward Hound Life Jacket. If your dog likes to wander far, the bright color options make them visible even when it gets dark. Bulldogs can come in all shapes and sizes. However, make sure to check the size charts for better accuracy. You will need a tight and secured fit on your dog. Dogs are more courageous and get less anxious during their puppy phase. You can also use a kiddie pool if you have one. Reward your dog for getting into the bath tub without water. For example, if you have plans to swim at a lake, take your Bulldog for a walk around the lake. Have the dog sniff the water and maybe even get his feet wet. We suggest you do this for a week or so prior to going to the lake. You just want to get the dog comfortable to seeing the body of water. At this point, the dog may be ready to move on to the next step. But only in the shallow area. Ideally, you would want to venture out to the point where the Bulldog can still stand up. Yes, I know, they have short legs and stature. So, try not to venture out too far yet. At this point, your Bulldog needs to have the life jacket on. What works well, especially if your Bulldog is food-driven, is to bribe the dog with treats. Positive reinforcement is key for this step. And if your Bulldog has a favorite toy, such as a ball or frisbee, bring that to the swim session too! Try throwing the ball into the shallow end and see if your dog will retrieve it. Keep the dog in the shallow end for a considerable amount of time. Though, you can feel out your dog. Swim With Your Bulldog! According to ClickerTraining , the best way to get your dog to swim is by going into the water with the dog. After all, dogs are fantastic visual learners. This will be necessary as you try to get your Bulldog into deeper waters. Dogs, including Bulldogs, look up to their owners for validation and safety. Try not to become anxious or freak out! Not only will this instill a lot of confidence in the Bulldog, but it just makes the swim session that much more enjoyable. Always keep an eye out and stay close. A good approach is to slowly go into the deep end and bring their favorite treats. More likely than not, your Bulldog will start heading towards you. Make sure to reward your Bulldog if he does come! Like with children, dogs will also learn from other dogs. Chances are, there are a ton of parasites and bacteria in the water that can cause some harm to your Bulldog, such as intestinal problems. Home tap water will work. All dogs adjust to being in water at different paces. Some will instantly jump in with little fear, while others will be timid. This can be done over a course of a few days, or few weeks. It depends on your dog. Has your Bulldog tried swimming? Do they enjoy it? Let us know in the comments section below! Posts you may like:. Can English Bulldogs swim? You have probably seen the joy your Bulldog feels when he plays in the mud or kiddie pool. But can Bulldogs swim? The sad truth is no. Bulldogs cannot swim on their own because of the structure of their body. Our beloved flat-faced buddies will immediately sink the moment they jump into deep waters. But my Bulldog loves playing in the water. What should I do? If you want to let your Bulldog enjoy paddling and swimming then it is important to get him a well-fitting swimming vest or life jacket to make sure your Bulldog stays afloat. Young Bulldog puppies usually fit in small vests while adult Bulldogs need medium-sized vests. Start by slowly lowering him down the water. Dogs have an instinct to go paddling when they get into the water. Once your Bulldog starts moving legs to go paddling, you can now let him go slowly. It will also help to have a treat in hand to try to lure your Bulldog to swim towards you. Using treats as reward, you can also teach your Bulldog where to enter and exit the pool. Do note that just like all dogs; Bulldogs need to be supervised when swimming all the time — even if they have their swimming vests on. But there are Bulldogs who can swim without life jackets? This video of a Bulldog swimming in a lake without a life jacket probably amazed you. Leave a Reply: Leave a comment below and share your thoughts.
But at the moment, they need your guidance. For now, this includes sleeping next to you for the first few weeks, maybe even longer. Just have their crate or bed close to wherever you sleep. Our articles on sleeping through the night and establishing a nighttime routine will give you extra tips on getting through this phase. A puzzle toy or Kong will work great at making them feel like you leaving them is actually something quite fun. Potty training All new puppy parents expect potty training to be on the cards. It will help to remember your Boxer pup is a bit of a goofball. For now, we definitely want to let your pup get used to you and settle into their new home. Teach your puppy about surfaces — Different surfaces can feel strange to pups. Use surfaces like grass, moss, paving and sand. Basically, make their tail wag and we bet yours will too. Teach your Boxer their name. Teach your Boxer puppy to sit. Remember what we said about Boxers and their jumping? Recall — Trust us. Preventing resource guarding Resource guarding is where your dog fiercely protects something they have and will do everything they can to keep hold of it. Dogs can resource guard food, a toy, even a person. You can do this by teaching them that hands and touch can be a good thing. As always, back up your soft touches with some treats. Remember that consent is also a thing with dogs! Never force your Boxer to be handled or pick them up against their wishes. White boxers may be deaf. The drug acepromazine can cause severe reactions. History The Boxer derives from two central European breeds of dog that no longer exist: the larger Danziger Bullenbeiser and smaller Brabenter Bullenbeiser. Bullenbeiser means bull-biter, and these dogs were used to chase large game through the forest. This required a strong but agile dog with a broad powerful jaw and a recessed nose. In England, the Bulldog was the favored breed for the sport, whereas in Germany large mastiff-type dogs were used. Around the s, German hunters began a concerted effort to create a new breed, crossing their Bullenbeisers with mastiff-type dogs for size, terriers for tenacity, and, finally, Bulldogs. The result was a tough agile dog with a streamlined body and strong grip. By , an entirely new breed, the Boxer, had been established. Although the exact origin of the name Boxer is obscure, it may have been derived from the German Boxl. The Boxer was one of the first breeds to be employed as a police and military dog in Germany. By , the breed had become established as a general utility dog, family pet, and even show dog. The AKC recognized the breed soon after, but only in the s did the breed begin its steady rise to the top of the popularity charts, eventually peaking as the fourth most popular breed in America. Related Content. Life Span Did You Know? The Boxer is one of the most popular dog breeds in the United States. It has been recognized by the AKC since .Although the Boxer dog breed originated in Germany, their ancient ancestry can be traced back to the Assyrian empire war dogs of BC. The modern Boxer breed we know and love today was originally developed in Germany in the late s. English-bred Bulldogs and the Bullenbesiier were crossed to create an energetic and agile hunting dog to chase wild game. The Boxer is a popular family companion and a versatile working dog. As a member of the Working Group, Boxers can be found competing in dog sports like agility, obedience, and herding. They also make great service and assistance dogs, as well as therapy dogs, and can be found working as search and rescue dogs, drug detection dogs, police dogs, and military dogs. The Boxer is a muscular and energetic dog that tends to have a happy, friendly disposition. They bond closely with their families and tend to get along well with children and other dogs. They can even do well with other pets despite their high prey drive if they are socialized and trained with them. As long as they are well-socialized, Boxers are generally upbeat, playful, and friendly. Although they have a natural instinct to protect their family from unwanted visitors, they do tend to warm up once introduced and are happy to make a new friend. They can be prone to barking a lot if you do not work on socialization and training your dog to stop barking early on. Boxers can be highly adaptable dogs. Although they have a lot of energy and are better suited to homes with yards where they can run, they can adapt to apartment living as long as they get the daily exercise, attention, and mental stimulation they need. As with any non-arctic dog breed, they are sensitive to very cold temperatures. Boxers are also a brachycephalic breed, which means they are even more sensitive to heat than other dogs. A Boxer is also one of the most affectionate dog breeds. Because they bond so closely with their families and get bored easily, they should not be left alone for long periods of time. Potential health conditions to be aware of in a Boxer include hip dysplasia, degenerative myelopathy, thyroid issues , and heart conditions like aortic stenosis and cardiomyopathy. Good breeding practices make a big difference and reputable breeders will screen their dogs to avoid passing preventable issues to puppies. So, make sure you are asking the breeder about the health and genetic history of the parents and about any health tests that have been done. Boxers are intelligent dogs that are eager to please their owners. Despite their energetic personality, they are one of the best dog breeds for first-time owners and are highly trainable dogs. They tend to excel at almost any task put before them! Because of their open, friendly nature and high energy, they have a tendency to jump up at people in excitement and playfulness. Since they grow into powerful dogs, you will want to make sure you train your dog not to jump up. Boxers have smooth and short coats that will shed a little year-round and require minimal grooming. A brush-down once or twice a week and the occasional bath as needed will keep their short coat healthy and looking great. Nail trims once or twice a month are usually enough to keep nails from growing too long. Checking ears weekly and carefully cleaning as needed can help prevent ear infections. Checking and wiping their facial wrinkles weekly or a few times a week if your dog is prone to getting into things can help keep their wrinkles clean and free of irritation. Dental diseases, like gum disease, are the most common health issues in older dogs because dental care is often overlooked; and, it can lead to other serious health issues. Brushing daily, plus cleanings at the vet when needed, is ideal. The Boxer is a high-energy dog breed that needs plenty of daily exercise to stay happy and healthy. Due to their high prey drive and urge to chase, they should only be let off-leash in secure areas. Boxers tend to get bored with repetition, are excellent problem solvers, and are naturally exuberant. A fully-grown Boxer usually stands inches tall at the shoulder and weighs pounds. Boxers generally live years on average. In Germany, the Boxer was one of the first dog breeds chosen for police training. Featured Boxer Article. So You Want A Boxer? I personally have a soft spot for Boxers thanks to fond childhood memories. Both were fawn colored and great with kids. One of my pet sitting clients was also a black brindle colored Boxer who loved to play catch me if you can in his yard. His name was Bogart and he was the most beautiful Boxer I have ever seen, and I swear he was aware of his good looks! Known as brachycephalic dogs, their nasal passages are much shorter than those of dogs with long snouts. That makes them more prone to overheating on hot summer days than dogs with regularly sized nasal passages. The same applies to tail docking. Besides a more natural look, undocked Boxers with a full tail are also better swimmers and can communicate more effectively with other dogs and humans too. It simply means teaching your Boxer to follow rules that are important to you. For example, no pulling on walks , not being allowed on furniture, no jumping on guests, waiting for your OK to eat, not racing through an open door, etc. They enjoy being close to their humans, including adults and children. Tennessee is a great place to live with an English bulldog. How do you breed for a healthier English Bulldog? Like all things in life, breeding for health is simply a matter of priority. We are blind to many of the breed priorities that distract other breeders from improving the health of the English Bulldog. We focus on health and personality and very little else. We are not interested in winning a blue ribbon in the show ring. Rather, we test for things like elongated soft palates, narrow tracheas, stenotic nares, luxation in the patellar tendons, heart defects, cherry eye, optic cilia, entropion, ect. We focus and prioritize creating healthy bloodlines, therefore our bulldogs are typically much healthier than the breed as a whole. After breeding for health, what other priorities are you focused on? Our true desire is to create the perfect family bulldog. We also believe a bulldog bred for the correct personality is essential to the family unit as well. A Bruiser Bulldog is bred for intelligence and playfulness. We want our bulldogs to be full of personality and some quirk. We believe a full personality along with a little stubbornness is the true North star of the bulldog breed and is what makes the unique among other breeds. We look for these personality traits in our adult bulldogs and continue to create bloodlines that reflect these qualities. What are the steps of your adoption process if I am located in Tennessee? Leah H. We were lucky to have come across Bruiser Bulldogs and even more so the fact that they were near our family and hometown made it even better. We have had Clementine Callie for four months now, and she is a wonderful dog. Her personality is amazing, and I think part of it is breeding and the other part is Erika and her family lovingly raising the puppies in their home with plenty of attention and snuggles. I also was impressed that, rather than send the puppies out right at 8 weeks, Erika kept ours for a few extra weeks because she was tiny and not read to leave her mom yet. It's that care that differentiates Bruisers from other breeders. Emily R. Erica was easy to work with thru the entire process from application to adopting and now beyond as we host our new family member, Chief. Her on-call support and willingness to provide open, honest advice to all of our questions and concerns continues to be appreciated. We would highly recommend Bruiser Bulldogs to anyone looking for an English Bulldog to join their family. Elizabeth W. Lady L. We were at the top of the waiting list for months and Erica reached out every litter to see if we were finally ready for a bulldog. When we were, she was very easy to work with. Her knowledge on bulldogs is outstanding. We had many questions on the process and she always knew what was best for the puppy. We've had Penny formerly Blair for two months and she is very healthy, energetic, playful, and sweet. She is great with other people and dogs. We are so happy with our pup. When we are ready for bulldog 2, we will only consider Bruiser Bulldogs. Mitch C. Bowser was born April and is an integral part of our family. When we were first exploring English Bulldog breeders our biggest concern was the overall health of the dogs. We decided to work with Erica at Bruiser Bulldogs because we liked their focus on improving the breeds breathing abilities and the fact that the puppies are raised within her family environment before coming home with their new owners. Bowser also breaths clearly and our vet was impressed with his overall health from the moment we brought him home. All that said we know English Bulldogs have a predisposition to many health issues and that his current health can not predict the future. With that In mind its important to start with a breeder that open to answer any of your questions as Erica has ours, and that strongly believes in improving the breeds overall health profile. Adam B. My sister ended up finding Bruiser Bulldogs and we knew right away that they were the breeder for us. In September we ended up driving 9 hours to pick up two Bruiser bulldog puppies- one for my husband and I and one for my mom. Jackson and Penelope have been nothing but a joy. They are both very athletic and healthy. They are also HUGE snugglers and always want to be with you. It is an absolute pleasure having these two bullies in our lives! Erica is very knowledgeable about the breed. She is very hands on throughout the process and is just overall a kind and honest person to work with. With all that being said I cannot recommend Bruiser Bulldogs enough! Collyn C. One of the reasons we chose Bruiser Bulldogs was due to the claims about breeding for health. During our first visit at our vet's office, he told us that our pup was one of the healthiest English bulldogs he had ever seen. He is healthy, happy and social. Would recommend to anyone. Christina S. We seen our dog on their website and sent them an Email. Mitch called us and personally walked us through the process and made sure we had the right dog for our family. They are known for their loyalty, obedience, and intelligence. They are also one of the most easy-going breeds, making them great pets for families with children. While Golden Retrievers are relatively low-maintenance dogs, they do require some grooming. The cost of grooming a Golden Retriever will depend on the length of the coat, the type of grooming required, and the location. Generally, the cost of grooming a Golden Retriever in India will range from Rs. Consequently, their owners must be prepared to invest time and money into training their dogs. The cost of Golden Retriever training in India varies depending on the trainer and the specific needs of the dog. However, most trainers charge between Rs. Some trainers may also charge extra for services such as agility training or puppy socialization classes. The prices will depend on the experience of the veterinarian and the services that they provide. A Golden Retriever is a popular dog breed in India, so there are many veterinarians that are familiar with the breed. Vet costs can also vary depending on the region of India that you live in. In general, it is recommended that you get three to four quotes before choosing a Golden Retriever veterinarian in India Golden Retriever Temperament Dogs love to be with their masters at all times and will eagerly participate in regular activities around the home. They are not typically guarded dogs but may bark when strangers approach and then quickly become friends. When considering purchasing a golden retriever puppy, be sure to research the breeder and ensure they are reputable. Golden retrievers generally do not like spending time alone, so socialization is important for them. It is important to ensure that your dog is well-trained in order to achieve the best possible results. When exposing them to different environments and situations, they will learn more and become more intelligent. Additionally, regularly trimming their nails will be beneficial for their foot health. Golden Retriever Grooming Goldens heavily shed their thick, water-repellant double coat once or twice a year, and they also shed more moderately on a continuous basis. Most of the time, a good brushing-out with a slicker brush once or twice a week will remove much of the dead hair before it has a chance to fall onto the furniture. During times of heavy shedding, these brushing sessions turn into daily affairs. Baths help to loosen the dead hairs, but the dog must be completely dry before brushing begins. Otherwise, Goldens only need occasional baths to keep them clean. Many Goldens happily get their exercise on hunting trips or at field trials, as well as by participating in canine sports such as agility, obedience, and tracking. Purebred Golden Retrievers are more expensive than those that are not. This is because purebreds conform to certain breed standards and are less likely to have health problems. Also, breeders who are selling purebred dogs usually have higher standards for their puppies and charge more for them. Generally, puppies that are younger will be priced higher than those that are older. This is because puppies that are younger are perceived as being more valuable due to their potential for future growth. Older dogs, on the other hand, may have already reached their full adult size and may not be as desirable to some buyers. Genuine, responsible breeders will charge more for their puppies because they offer good health guarantees, high-quality breeding stock, and proper socialization and training. These breeders also care about their puppies and want to make sure they go to good homes. Health of the Dog One of the most important factors that determine the price of a golden retriever is the health of the dog. Generally, dogs that are in good health and have no major health concerns will be more expensive than those that do. Breeders will also charge more for puppies that come from healthy and well-bred parents. So, before you buy a golden retriever, be sure to ask the breeder about the health history of both the parents and the puppy. Not all mini Goldendoodles are equal, there are a few different versions to choose from each having a little different genetic background based on the pups parents. We will explain all the differences in Mini Goldendoodle puppies and how they are bred below. We raise all versions of the mini goldendoodle breed. F1 Mini Goldendoodle Pups. A F1 puppy is also known as a First Generation puppy. The puppies mother is a Golden Retriever and the pups dad is a Mini Poodle. This version of mini goldendoodle usually has soft wavy or curly puppy fur. They will shed until they lose their puppy fur, after shedding they will shed a lot less, but will shed. This version is partially hypoallergenic and usually requires low maintenance. F1 mini goldendoodles usually need to be groomed every 6 months along with daily brushing to keep their curly hair from matting and getting tangled. The dogs usually grow up having great temperaments similar to golden retrievers. They usually get about inches high at the shoulder and range in weight from pounds. F1b Mini Goldendoodle Pups. An F1b is known as a second-generation mini goldendoodle with the pups mother being already an F1 Goldendoodle and the pups dad being a mini poodle also. So the difference between F1 and F1b is that the mom is not a golden retriever but an actual F1 Goldendoodle. They also have very soft curly hair but with almost no shedding. This F1b version is semi-hypoallergenic and a better choice for anyone who has pet allergies. The F1b also should be brushed on a daily basis but will need to be groomed more frequently then a F1. A 6 to 8 week grooming schedule is recommended to keep their coat in perfect condition. F1b Mini goldendoodles get around 18 to 20 inches tall at the shoulders and range between pounds in weight. F1bb Mini Goldendoodle Pups. An F1bb goldendoodle is also known as a third-generation mini goldendoodle. This mini goldendoodle version has a coat more similar to a poodle than of a golden retriever. This is because the pup is more of a poodle than a retriever. Making it the very best version for anyone with pet allergies. A 6 to 8 week grooming schedule is required to help prevent knots or matting. This version is super intelligent and loving, and usually seems to have more energy than the other versions of Mini goldendoodles. This version is usually smaller in size, weighing around pounds and only getting inches tall at the shoulders. The smaller size makes them a great size for smaller homes and apartments. These sizes reflect the weight and height, from the smallest to the biggest. Speaking of temperament, we need to look at the following question before we go any further… Are Pitbulls Aggressive? Yes, and no! To answer the question fully, we need to look to the past. The Pitbull breeds were originally created for fighting, so aggression was encouraged. However, these dogs were also bred to be loyal and affectionate towards their owners. All Pitbull breeds are descended from the Old English Bulldog, which is now extinct. Bulldogs were created for the bloodsport of bull-baiting, where bulls were placed in a ring while dogs attacked them. Some were forced to fight against each other. Some were placed in pits where they had to catch and kill as many rats as possible. The pit that was used for fighting is where the Pit Bull name came from, as new breeds based on the Bulldog were created for these bloodthirsty pastimes. These were Pit Bull Dogs, shortened to Pitbull over the years. Why is all this relevant? Because these dogs had to be aggressive if they wanted to survive, and large amounts of money were at stake. They possessed a trait known as gameness, which gave them the instinct to fight to win or to die in the attempt. Eventually, dogfighting was also outlawed in most places, but continued illegally as it does today, unfortunately. However, as these dogs began to be bred as companions rather than for fighting, their gentler nature emerged. The vast majority of Pitbulls today have, thankfully, never seen a fighting pit and never will. They have been used as working dogs on farms, especially across the U. Are they aggressive? Well, they have the potential to be aggressive, as do most dogs. Any dog that is fearful, in pain, feels threatened, or has been abused may show aggression at some point. Pitbulls from fighting lines, that is, one or both parents were bred for fighting, will certainly be more predisposed towards aggression. However, Pitbull pups from an ethical, responsible, and reputable breeder will be far less likely to be. A well-adjusted, properly trained, and socialized Pitbull is a joy to behold and a pleasure to be around. So, are Pitbulls aggressive? In the past, they definitely were. Some still are today, but these are unfortunate creatures that were either bred for fighting or mistreated and in pain. This has a bearing on our Pitbull Poodle mix, as many of you will understandably be keen to know whether this unique designer dog might also be aggressive. Photo from: wild. Some people call it the Pit Boodle, or simply the Boodle. Others use the name Pitbull Poo, or the Pitdoodle. Which one is your favorite? Can you think of another? Pit Boodle seems to be the most popular at present, though whether this remains the case is yet to be seen. In the future, it may be that some of these breeds become established and accepted as purebred dogs. Photo from: rubythundr Without a doubt, the Pit Boodle makes an amazing family companion. She has the strength, loyalty, and affection of the Pittie, and the intelligence and humor of the Poodle. Will she be aggressive? This depends on how you treat her! Dog aggression towards humans is almost always a result of bad treatment. True dog lovers rarely have a problem with aggressive dogs. She might sneak off to find a quiet place on the 4th of July or any other occasion when fireworks are being set off. Looking for a kid-friendly dog? Then, the Pitbull Poodle mix might be the one for you, as they adore being around young children. Her lively, energetic nature, and her ability to form strong bonds with family members very quickly make her an ideal family dog, even for first-time dog owners. You should always use positive reinforcement when training, as this brings the best results. This breed will not respond well to harsh words and shouts. The curly Poodle coat tends to be a looser curl, making it easier to brush out the loose hair. A good family pet? Pitbull Poodle Mix Breeders Photo from: mylittlefurfamily One of the most important aspects of getting a puppy is the place where you buy it. You must be certain that the parent dogs have been cared for and kept in good conditions. Look for a small-scale, local breeder if possible. Visit them and ask if you can take a look around the kennels. Ask lots of questions, and check whether they have health screening and a health guarantee. Be prepared to answer any question about your home and lifestyle, as a good breeder will want to know where their precious pups are going! Avoid buying online at all costs. This is a major outlet for puppy mills, where dogs are produced simply to make money. Pet stores and backyard breeders are also best avoided for the same reasons. You should steer clear of anyone who plays on the fact that a dog is rare, as they are using this to justify charging more. Check out reviews for breeders online to see what ordinary people have to say about them. Take your time about it, and never be rushed into making a decision! Pitbull Poodle Mix Adoption One way to avoid breeders and potential puppy mills altogether is to head down to your local rescue center or dog shelter. Fees are usually higher if they include things like spaying and neutering, vaccinations, etc. This is because selective breeding in purebred dogs, sometimes over hundreds of years, has narrowed the gene pool, resulting in a range of genetic defects. Mixing two breeds sometimes avoids this by injecting fresh genes into the hybrid pups, making them much healthier than their purebred cousins. Even so, there is still a possibility that your Pitbull Poodle mix might suffer from some of the following conditions: Hip dysplasia — A malformed hip joint that makes it painful for the dog to walk. Ear infections — These are common in most dog breeds, especially those with floppy ears. Ear wax can build up and dirt gets stuck inside the ear canal. This provides a warm, moist environment for bacteria to thrive in, leading to infections. Heart disease — This one is always a cause for concern! There are several different types of heart disease, but Toy Poodles and Miniature Poodles are particularly prone to dilated cardiomyopathy the heart becomes enlarged, thin, and weak, and is unable to pump the blood properly. In Pitties, the main heart problem is aortic stenosis. Dogs with this condition have a narrow aorta, meaning that the heart has to work harder. It is treatable, but can lead to heart failure. Obesity — Extra weight puts strain on the heart and joints. It can also lead to diabetes and cancer. Obesity often happens in old age, when dogs are less active but still eating the same amount of food as they did when they were younger and fitter. It is always best to feed your dog the appropriate amount of food according to its age and activity level. The Pitbull Poodle mix has a lifespan of between 9 and 15 years. Why is there such a big difference? Small dogs generally live longer than big dogs, so the hybrids that use the Miniature and Toy Poodles will probably live longer. The larger Pitbulls, such as the American Pitbull Terrier and the American Bully, account for the lower end of the scale, as they can be pretty big dogs. These two breeds have a lifespan of between 8 and 12 years. So, how can you make sure that your Pit Boodle sticks around for at least 15 years? First, find a good breeder! As we mentioned above in the section about breeders and several times elsewhere! Second, you need to feed your pup good-quality dog food , only give it healthy treats, and make sure that it has plenty of exercise. You should also take it for regular check-ups at the vet, as this will help to identify any potential problems early. Nevertheless, you need to remember the general rule that the bigger the dog, the shorter its lifespan. Pitbull Poodle Mix Price Photo from: mylittlefurfamily This is a rare crossbreed, which may affect the price. All of these factors will affect the final price! This means that any price we suggest here will be a rough estimate based on the limited information available. This proves the point that many factors influence the price of puppies, but you should never be tempted to go for the cheapest option without thoroughly checking out the breeder. A pup that is sold at a bargain price may not be healthy, which is why the seller wants a quick sale. However, someone could try to sell you a puppy at a premium price to trick you into believing that it is of the best quality. Sadly, there are too many unscrupulous people out there. Shop around, do your homework, and keep your wits about you. Some people say it is, others disagree! To be fair, both may be right. It all depends on which particular breeds are involved and which genes are dominant in the offspring. In many cases, a Pit Boodle has a curly coat like the Poodle parent, which is famous for its hypoallergenic qualities. Then again, the pup may favor the Pitbull side, with its short, smooth coat type — although this is quite rare. We also need to keep in mind that hypoallergenic simply means that the dog is less likely to cause an allergic reaction than some other breeds. In Summary Photo from: dogsoffleashes Who would have thought that you could mix the Poodle and the Pitbull? But, is this the doggy friend of your dreams? Its appearance will vary depending on which size of Poodle and which Pitbull breed was used. It could be as small as 15 inches or as tall as 24 inches. It could weigh as little as 30 pounds or as much as 70 or even 80 pounds. This dog will need at least 45 minutes of exercise each day, as well as some quality playtime. It is great with kids, especially after being properly socialized. Your Pit Boodle will probably have a dense, smooth coat that could be black, blue, gray, fawn, silver, cream, brown, cafe-au-lait, or brindle. If you do find that it becomes too much for you, try using a professional groomer. This is a good idea once in a while anyway, as it keeps your dog looking in top condition. It sounds like an unlikely combination, but the Pitbull Poodle mix is already making waves, and it looks like it might become popular. Fans of traditional breeds are fearful that hybrids will make purebred dogs extinct. It has to be said that this is a real possibility in some cases, as trends and fashions change. The main issue here is that whatever breeds are available, they are healthy, loved, and cared for. Related Links:. Are Poodle Pitbull Mixes Friendly? The short answer for this is yes, Poodle Pitbull mixes can be very friendly. Although both Poodles and American Pitbull Terriers are loving, energetic, family companions, each breed has distinctive tendencies, and every dog its own unique personality. Whereas Poodles tend to be a bit more dignified, intelligent, and aloof, Pitbull breeds are usually more people-oriented, playful, and eager to please. Because both of these breeds have a loyal and protective nature, Poodle Pitbull mixes are prone to being shy around strangers and can be known to bark, though they are rarely aggressive in any way. This makes it especially important that they receive plenty of socialization and basic training beginning in their puppyhood and continuing throughout their lives. With keen intelligence and a desire to please, this mixed breed is highly trainable, but because they tend to be sensitive, you should mainly rely on positive reinforcement when training and interacting with them. Just like people, dogs will have unique exercise requirements based on their genetics, diet, size, gender, and overall health. Both standard Poodles and American Pitbull Terriers are active breeds that need plenty of daily exercise, so you should expect that your Poodle Pitbull mix will need the same. A post shared by Dani Marie wild. Pitbulls have an abundance of stamina and both of these breeds have a lot of energy and drive, so they will require regular moderate exercise to stay happy and healthy. Poodle Pitbull mixes can have a high-maintenance curly coat with minimal shedding or a sturdy, short coat that requires weekly brushing. Pitbull breeds like American Pitbull Terriers, on the other hand, have a very easy coat to care for since their fur is quite short and sheds frequently. Similar to Poodles, American Pitbull Terriers have a single coat, and their fur sheds whenever the hair has reached its genetically determined length before dying and falling out. Being brushed once or twice a week is typically plenty and bathing is only necessary when the dog is visibly dirty. Even the healthiest of dogs can be prone to conditions or illnesses, and your Pit Boodle will be no exception. Gastric Dilatation Volvulus, usually known as Bloat, is another dangerous condition in which the gut and internal organs become twisted, resulting in cellular damage or even organ death. Some sources mention that as much as half of all standard Poodles also suffer from Sebaceous Adenitis, which causes the immune system to attack the sebaceous oil glands and skin, leaving dandruff, thick or scaly skin, hair loss, and skin infections. American Pitbull Terriers, although typically robust and hearty, are still prone to several different health concerns. One of the biggest issues for the average Pitbull is allergies; food allergies and allergies to materials like grass or dust are very common. Another health concern for Pitbulls is their increased likelihood of having heart issues like congenital heart disease as well as murmurs or irregular heartbeats. Hypothyroidism is another very serious issue for many Pitbulls, characterized by a lack of thyroxine, causing secondary issues like lethargy, muscle loss, weight gain, infections, and hair loss. You can expect your standard Poodle Pitbull mix to be between inches cm tall and weigh around pounds kg. As with many other physical factors of designer dogs, predicting the expected size of your dog may prove difficult. Standard Poodles are known as medium to large-sized dogs. Their adult height is usually inches tall at the shoulder, with the males typically on the larger end of the spectrum. Similarly, where female Poodles generally weigh between 45 and 60 pounds, males can weigh anywhere from 45 to 70 pounds. This breed has a square frame, long slender legs, and elegant features. American Pitbull Terriers are usually considered medium-sized dogs, largely due to their stocky body type. Females are typically inches tall, while males are only fractionally larger at inches tall. Pitbulls can weigh anywhere from 30 to 85 pounds, depending mostly on their family line rather than their gender. Depending on which parent the dog takes after most will best determine their estimated lifespan. Generally speaking, you can expect a Pitbull Poodle mix to reach years with two years more or less definitely being possible. Across the board, most rescues, expert sources, and breed associations agree that standard Poodles generally live between years. American Pitbull Terriers, on the other hand, have a wide variety of expectations; with most claiming they usually live 8 years. This discrepancy of the statistics may have something to do with the abuse and suffering which was often fatal in Pitbulls who were forced to fight for their lives. Are Poodle Pitbull Mixes Expensive? Like other designer dogs, this mixed breed can greatly vary in pricing depending on their breeder and location. Because there are no breed standards or breed associations in place, breeders can charge as much as people are willing to pay for their Pit Boodle puppies. Many of these puppies are coming from irresponsible or inexperienced breeders, who may or may not be acting ethically. Pitbull mixes are sadly plentiful in shelters, it may be harder to find one mixed with a Poodle though. Just like other pets, having a dog can be quite expensive when you consider all the costs involved. If you start with just the normal base expenses, that will probably include food, bedding, toys, and treats. Even more costly is veterinary care such as wellness checks, vaccines, and preventative care for your furry friend. In the end, though, keeping a member of your family happy and healthy for the many years to come is worth every penny. Make sure to read up about everything you need to know about a potential new family member. Post navigation. The Boodle is a mix between the purebred Poodle and the purebred Pitbull. While crossbreed dogs are quite popular these days, Pitbull Poodle Mix dogs remain somewhat rare in the canine kingdom. For this reason, finding a Pitbull Poodle Mix puppy could prove difficult. The good news is that with patience, research, and dedication you should be able to find one of these curly cuties through a reputable source you can trust. But is a Pitbull Poodle Mix really the hybrid dog for you? As with all dogs, there is quite a bit you should consider if you are considering investing in this type of crossbreed. Sometimes known as the French Poodle, the Poodle is actually a German dog bred specifically for water retrieving. A natural athlete, the Poodle soon made his way to France where he worked as a street performer and circus dog. This dog is the ideal dog for those who struggle with allergies. Today, doodle hybrids are some of the most popular cross breed dogs in the canine kingdom. And because modern-day Poodles come in three size varieties, you can find a broad range of Poodle mix dogs in different weights per your specific needs. One thing all Poodles do have in common, experts agree, is their incredible intelligence, their affinity for people, and their athleticism. The term Pitbull is a broad term used to describe a number of different breeds that all fall under the bully breed category. Some Pitbull types are not recognized as true breeds by major breed clubs like the American Kennel Club, though most Pitbull enthusiasts agree that there are varying differences between pitbull type dogs as a whole. Unfortunately, PItbull dogs were originally red for blood sports and bull-baiting, which lead to these dogs having an unfortunate reputation as aggressive. The truth is, most studies have found that Pitbulls are actually very people-oriented, eager to please, and family-friendly. As with all dogs, Pitbulls need routine training and socialization to grow up happy and healthy, and this will also be true for any Pitbull mix you might come across. Pitbulls are highly intelligent and trainable, and they are best suited for active dog owners and dedicated dog owners who are willing to take the time to train, socialize, and exercise their Pitbull or Pitbull mix properly. There is some controversy surrounding crossbreed dogs like the Boodle mix. Hybrid dogs like the Pitbull Poodle Mix are not considered purebred dogs, though they are also not considered mutts. Instead, these types of dogs belong to their own category known as crossbreeds, mixed breeds, hybrids, or designer dogs. These are dogs that are the specifically chosen offspring of two purebred parent breeds. Unfortunately, modern-day crossbreeding is somewhat controversial. Although the practice has been ongoing for centuries, it has only recently become a popular trend among dog lovers and breeders over the last two decades. This trend has led to a variety of mixed-breed dogs, many of them Doodle mixes , that are being bred and sold for as much and sometimes more than their purebred counterparts. Purebred dogs, while often considered wildly overbred, do have the benefit of predictability when it comes to their appearance, temperament, and overall health. Crossbreed dogs, on the other hand, are less predictable when considering these traits. Another part of the controversy has to do with the idea of hybrid vigor. Hybrid vigor is the idea that crossbreed dogs may actually be healthier than purebred dogs thanks to their widened gene pool, which could mean they are less likely to inherit specific genetic health issues from one parent breed over the other. Of course, there are also those who point out that crossbreed dogs like the Pitbull Poodle Mix may be less healthy and more at risk, especially considering they have a wider gene pool to contend with. Whichever side of the fence you stand on, there are a few things you should consider before considering a crossbreed dog like the Pitbull Poodle Mix. First, temperament, appearance, and health will be left up to chance and genetics. This is especially true if your Pitbull Poodle Mix is an early generation crossbreed. Second, not all breeders who breed and sell crossbreed dogs are reputable. Are you wondering if the Pitbull Poodle Mix makes a good family dog? Then wonder no more! This crossbreed has the potential to make a fabulous family dog and is likely to get along well with children and other pets when well trained and socialized. Some Pitbull dogs may be prone to dog-on-dog aggression if not properly trained, though this can be worked with and Pitbull Poodle mix dogs are quite trainable. In fact, the Pitbull Poodle mix is likely to have an affinity for children. These dogs are energetic and athletic, plus they are sturdy and robust enough to enjoy playtime in a yard with youngsters. We recommend helping children learn basic canine body language so they can better understand when their dog is happy, playful, stressed, or fearful. It is also important to never leave young children alone or unsupervised with your family dog. Training should be done using positive reinforcement training techniques that utilize treats and praise. Socialization, the process of introducing your dog to a variety of different experiences like people, places, environments, sights, sounds, and other animals, should also begin as early as possible. If your dog has allergies, which many Pitbull Poodle mix dogs do we recommend staying away from poultry-based treats and instead choosing liver, sweet potato, rabbit, or salmon. We should also note here that the Pitbull Poodle mix dog is best suited for those who have large yards where their dog is able to run and play freely. The Pitbull Poodle mix is a high-energy dog that requires routine exercise, and this could be overwhelming for some owners. So, how can you properly exercise a Pitbull Poodle Mix? Keep reading to find out! Exercise is important for all dogs no matter their breed, size, or age. However, for a high-energy dog like the Pitbull Poodle Mix, routine exercise and mental stimulation are a MUST to ensure your dog is living his healthiest, happiest life. The proper exercise for a Pitbull Poodle mix will consist of one to two good walks a day. These walks should be half an hour to an hour or so long for each outing. The Pitbull Poodle mix may also enjoy hiking, jogging, and swimming. Remember, the Poodle specifically was a bred water retrieving dog, and if introduced to the water correctly your Pitbull Poodle mix could learn to love lakes, pools, and even the ocean! We should also point out here that the PItbull Poodle mix comes from two breeds that do have a high prey drive. For this reason, the Boodle dog can be prone to taking off after smaller animals when out and about out of instinct. Avoid aversive walking equipment like choke chains or prong collars and instead stick with no-pull harnesses and collars that help to teach your dog ideal walking manners when utilized with praise and treats. This harness fits your dog naturally and helps reduce choking or pressure on his throat or trachea. And because it clips in the front, it reduces the pressure put on the chest which could encourage your dog to try and pull ahead on walks naturally. This harness is adjustable and even comes in different colors! Along with ensuring you have the proper walking equipment to exercise your dog with, we also suggest investing in some toys and tools to help keep your dog mentally stimulated. Without proper mental stimulation, the Pitbull Poodle mix can be prone to boredom which can lead to behavioral issues like stress, boredom, chewing, barking, marking, and anxiety. You also have the option of investing in puzzle toys to help keep your Pitbull Poodle mix active and engaged. The Pitbull Poodle mix is a cross between two very different-looking purebred dogs. The Pitbull is a shedding dog that has a smooth coat and sheds moderately year-round. The Poodle, on the other hand, is a hypoallergenic dog that sheds much less and produces much less dander than most of its other canine counterparts. While we do recommend doodle mix dogs for those who struggle with allergies, it should be noted here that getting a hypoallergenic Pitbull Poodle mix could be hit or miss. If he is more like his Poodle parent in appearance, his coat could have the potential to grow out long and become tangled or matted. Because the Pitbull Poodle mix dog is not eligible for show, you may opt to have his coat kept in a puppy cut. Puppy cut hairstyles are much easier to manage in dogs like Pitbull Poodle mix dogs as they are easier to maintain. Luckily, the Pitbull Poodle Mix should not require bathing too often, and will only need to be washed with a dog-safe shampoo once every four weeks or so. This shampoo is so gentle in fact that you can use it on puppies or on dogs who are struggling with bug bites or hot spots. The shampoo is made with natural ingredients that soothe and hydrate the skin , and help to alleviate allergies, itchiness, and irritations. It also smells great and is made with lavender, jojoba oil, eucalyptus oil, and other soothing ingredients that reduce inflammation, itching, and doggy odor. The Pitbull Poodle mix is a healthy dog overall, but there are some gentic health issues he could be predisposed to. The Pitbull Poodle mix dog has a decent lifespan of between 9 and 15 years. He may also have the benefits of hybrid vigor, which can reduce his chances of suffering from certain genetic health issues from one parent breed over the other. Of course, like all dogs, the Pitbull Poodle Mix can be prone to any of the same genetic health issues of his purebred parent breeds. While it can be difficult to predict just what a crossbreed dog like the Pitbull Poodle mix could be predisposed to, it can help to take a look into the health issues of his parent breeds. Pitbull Pitbull Poodle Mix Temperament And Personality Pit Poodles are loyal and affectionate with their owners, especially if they have been loved and cared for in a loving home environment. The mixed-breed dog is alert and eager to learn. They make excellent watchdogs, in addition to being excellent pets. Pitbull Poodle Mix dogs are affectionate and fun-loving. They should be active and strong and exercise daily. They make great jogging partners for active owners. People who lead sedentary lives need to find ways to drain their pup's energy. Yes absolutely! Pitbull Poodle Mix is an excellent family dog. They love to play with children and can keep them entertained for hours. They also resist naughty antics from children as they have a high pain tolerance. Don't let the negative reputation of the Pitbull name put you off having Boodles as a pet for your family. Dogs loved and cared for with love and respect are never dangerous to their guardians. It is important to socialize your dog with other dogs as soon as possible. This will allow them to learn to enjoy the company of other pets. You should also make sure they are not loose around other animals. You can monitor your Boodle's interactions with other animals and intervene if you feel things are getting out of control. Pitbull Poodle Mix Exercise Requirement Dogs can go wild because they lack mental and physical stimulation. This can be avoided by ensuring your Pitbull Poodle Pitbull mixes get at least 45 minutes to an hour of exercise each day. They can become aggressive and frustrated if they don't get enough exercise. This Boodle's curly coat collects fur and dander rather than letting it shed. This coat can be prone to mats and tangles, so you should brush him daily to keep him clean and shiny. Wooly Boodles will need to be bathed more often than other dogs. Tightly curly hair traps dirt, debris, and other waste. Pitbulls can be passed on to Pit Boodles the same way a Pitbull can adopt their Pitbull parent. A Pitbull-like Pitbull Boodle will have a smoother coat. He will lose, but he will require less care. The puppy can live for several weeks without bathing and tolerates weekly brushing. Whatever the situation, you should use mild, gentle shampoo for your Boodle. To avoid excessive earwax buildup, brush his teeth at least once a week and clean his ears. Also, be sure to trim their nails as long as possible. Long nails can restrict a puppy's movement and gait. Pit Boodles don't always get the curly coat of the Poodle. Expect moderate shedders if your Pitbull puppy inherits the Pitbull coat. Curly hair keeps loose hair from floating around, allowing him to stick to his fur instead. To get rid of loose hair, your Boodle must brush his teeth daily. Your dog's size, age, and activity level will affect his diet. A veterinarian can help you determine how much food your Pit-Poodle should eat daily. Avoid giving leftover Pitbull Poodle Mix, especially fatty foods and foods high in salt, sugar, and spices. Consuming such foods can lead to toxic effects and long-term health problems, including obesity and high cholesterol. Instead, always feed your puppy natural canine food. It's also essential to make sure your Boodle eats slowly. Bloating can lead to serious health problems. This can be avoided by dividing their daily meals into two parts. To prevent them from eating too quickly, you can buy food bowls. Pitbull Poodle Mix Common Health Problems The Pitbull poodle mix is not purebred and does not have the same genetic health issues as its parents. That doesn't mean you should blindly buy them. Always ask about the parent's health exam and medical records before purchasing a Boodle puppy. These diseases are common in both parent breeds. So let's find out what they are. This can lead to hip dysplasia in puppies. Before buying a puppy, ensure the parents do not suffer from hip dysplasia. Bloating: Bloat, or gastric dilatation-volvulus GDV , is a condition where there is an excessive amount of air in the abdomen. If you don't take your pet to the vet immediately, this condition could prove fatal. Eye Problems: Poodles can inherit eye problems such as progressive retinal atrophy PRA , cataracts, and distichiasis. These conditions are not life-threatening but can lead to blindness. Ear Infection: Ear infections can be severe and cause long-term problems for your dog. Earwax can cause infections in your Boodles' ears. Soak a cotton ball in warm water to clean your puppy's ears. Addison's Disease: Addison's disease is a disease in which dogs' adrenal glands stop producing certain hormones. If treatment is not given immediately, it can be fatal. Therefore, you should take your dog to the vet immediately if you notice any signs such as lethargy, vomiting, or lack of appetite. Obesity: Obesity can lead to many other diseases. Your Boodle can gain weight by overeating, not exercising, or eating fatty foods. Excess weight can lead to heart disease, orthopedic problems, and diabetes. A healthy Pitbull Poodle Mix puppy from a good breeder can live up to years. Leave a comment. They have both the strength of the Pitbull and the intelligence of the Poodle. With the right care, socialization, and training, you can be sure that the Pit Boodle will be a wonderful companion even for kids! Aside from being a great family dog, the Pitbull Poodle mix is also known for its adaptability and instinct for obedience. To understand the Pitbull Poodle mix better, we can take a glance at the parent breeds and know their history. One of these theories says that Poodles were bred from rugged Asian herding dogs and were then captured by an ethnic group native to North Africa called Berbers. Another theory is that they were descended from dogs that left the Asian steppes with the nomadic German people called the Goths. In the past, Poodles were often used as hunting dogs and duck retrievers. Because of this, they were owned not by the common folk but by wealthier families who hunted fowls. They were originally bred from Old English Bulldogs who fought and killed bulls for entertainment purposes. After games like bull-baiting were prohibited, other games followed such as ratting in which Bulldogs competed to see who could kill more rats. These games became increasingly popular which led competitors to believe that there was a need for better-skilled dogs. Later, the Pitbull found itself in America, left behind its old identity and became known as working dogs. They helped in hunting and protecting livestock and families. Photo from mexikiwitex IG How the Pitbull Poodle mix will look when fully grown is very unpredictable since Pitbulls and Poodles are built very differently. Pitbulls are muscular which shows their strength while Poodles are slender and exude elegance. But whether a Pit Boodle puppy will inherit more traits from its Pitbull or Poodle parent, some traits are predictable. These will let you know what to expect from Pit Boodle puppies. Build The build is harder to predict since the Pit Boodle puppy may either take after the Pitbull parent or inherit more from the Poodle lineage. If the Pit Boodle pup takes after the former, it may grow into a muscular build with a boxy silhouette. These pups are generally proportional but they may have slightly longer legs compared to other medium dogs. The coat can come in a multitude of colors, including white, tan, black , grey , and blue, and they may have a brindle pattern. Thus, a fully grown Pitbull Poodle mix can be as small as 18 inches or as tall as 24 inches and can weigh anywhere between 40 to 70 pounds. The Pitbull Poodle mix makes for a great family dog because of the superb temperament inherited from both breeds. Pitbull and Poodle mixes can be great with children as long as they are socialized properly. They are gentle and playful medium-sized dogs who are generally careful around children. Of course, despite this, accidents can happen at any time. Socializing them at a young age will decrease the chances of any accidental injury from happening. This could result in aggressiveness but this can easily be prevented if you train your pup well enough. As much as possible, the Pit Boodle pup should not be left at home alone since they can feel scared and agitated. This could lead to them biting and gnawing at anything they can reach. If it goes on for an extended period of time, this behavior could get worse. Female Pitbull: Which Is Better? Every dog is different, and the same is true for each Pit Boodle puppy. Their size can affect their expected lifespan, with some smaller Pitbull Poodle mixes living longer than the larger ones. The Pitbull Poodle mix is generally a healthy dog but as with all animals, they are at risk of a few health issues. Since the Pit Boodle is a mixed breed, they can inherit the known health conditions of either parent. In general, Pit Boodles have a life expectancy of 9 to 15 years. Hip Dysplasia: Both Pitbulls and Poodles are at risk of hip dysplasia , which makes it a very high-risk condition for Pit Boodles. To avoid the risk of hip dysplasia, make sure your pup has a healthy lifestyle. Otherwise, they can easily develop arthritis and other mobility difficulties. If left alone, skin infections are likely. Bloat: One of the most common health issues, bloat is usually seen in dogs with improper diet and insufficient exercise. If left unchecked, this can be fatal for your dog. Obesity: Another common health issue caused by an improper diet and lack of exercise, prolonged obesity can lead to several health issues such as many types of cancer, diabetes mellitus, heart disease, hypertension, osteoarthritis, and faster degeneration of affected joints. Advantages and Disadvantages of Breeding Pitbull and Poodle Together For years, crossbreeding has been controversial in the dog world. Crossbreeding has advantages and disadvantages, and the same is true for crossbreeding a Poodle and a Pitbull. Some dog enthusiasts prefer crossbreeds because they often have a unique look. This is especially true for the Pitbull and Poodle mix because of how different the parents look. They may also be at a lower risk of congenital diseases, especially if only one of the parents is a carrier. In the future, the Pitbull Poodle mix can become the basis for a new dog breed. For example, because hip dysplasia is common among both parents, it is a high-risk condition for Pit Boodles. Lastly, because designer dogs are becoming increasingly popular, some mixed-breed dogs can be more expensive than purebreds. If you want to bring home a Pit Boodle pup, be prepared to spend some money. Brush their teeth regularly even if chewable treats are given and take them to the vet from time to time to ensure that your health habits are checked and okay for your pitbull poodle mix. If you give your dog table food, chances are, it will develop illnesses brought about by human food. Opt to stick to dog food pellets, soft meat, etc. Bloating: this is a common thing among different breeds. Bloating leads to gastric dilatation-volvulus if not addressed immediately and may lead to death. Hip dysplasia: Poodles are prone to have joint dysplasia most commonly in the hip and pelvic area. This occurrence happens when joints pop out of the socket, causing immense pain for the hybrid. Pitbull Crossed With Poodle Food Requirements Make it a point to ensure and prioritize the type of food you allow your dog to eat because this will significantly affect its longevity of life and health status. Take note of the size and needs of each breed it came from so you may plan a specific diet for your hybrid. Treats are good for training as well but refrain from making it a daily habit to lessen weight gain. Make sure you choose snacks that have low caloric content. Take note of the nutrients needed to ensure a proper diet. Always choose foods that are rich in protein, as they are high energy dogs. Make sure to avoid typical dog allergens such as wheat, corn, and potatoes. Your dog might be prone to skin diseases as well, and its best to strictly follow feeding instructions. If you look hard enough, the market offers a lot of high-quality foods you can give your pitbull poodle mix. Instinct takes pride in improving the coat of any dog that stays on their dog food for a while. High-energy dogs will surely benefit from all the protein this brand gives. It also contains oat fiber for proper digestion, and dried cranberries, blueberries, and spinach as antioxidants. It includes chicken, fish, and whitefish meal. Antioxidants such as Vitamin E, beta carotene, fruits, and vegetables are incorporated to boost the immune system. Oatmeal, barley, brown rice, and rye are included to promote digestion and L-carnitine for fat burning. Their product has natural microorganisms to help aid digestion in line with the incorporation of lentils as a fiber source. Considering that your gorgeous mixed breed is a medium-size dog, you can offer them either the best dry dog food for small dogs or the best large breed dry dog food — it may surprise you to find out which parent they take their taste for food after! Whichever brand you settle on, make sure that it is only the best dry dog food kind as going for the worst dry dog food may have dire consequences on the overall health of your pooch. Pitbull Poodles Exercise Requirements Your boodle is a product of two very different breeds: one is highly active, and the other focuses more on the intellectual aspect so it would be best to choose equipment or toys that can exercise them physically, as well as train their minds and awaken their sensitivity. Make sure you schedule play time with your dogs, whether its walking or running or playing in the park to ensure that they have a healthy lifestyle. You can also incorporate exercise in your home. Try playing hide and seek or fetch in your backyard, anything to keep your dog going and panting. Physical and mental exercises are essential to avoid putting your boodle in an idle state, which can lead to depression, boredom, and destruction. Try your best to plan any form of activity that will keep your pups active physically and mentally. To improve your exercise regimen, here are some toys you can purchase: Canine Hardware Chuckit! Classic Launchers: This is perfect for the non-athletic, stay at home type of owners. This product is also ideal for the energetic side of your hybrid, without giving you the sore arm from repeatedly throwing the ball. FluffyPal Chew Toys For Puppies Small Dogs And Medium Dogs: This product is an all-in-one type because it can be a teething toy which can remove tartar, a potential favorite toy, and it also has a vanilla scent to counter any dog drool smell. Not only does it exercise your hybrid, but it also teaches it about rewards and positive outcomes when they follow a command. Hear Doggy! With the balanced need for exercise, you can choose to specify activities that will enhance their physical and mental abilities. Make sure you have enough space for them to run around and play. So this can be a bit of a challenge because you need to exercise both aspects. Pit bulls tend to exercise wanting the alpha position, which needs training that involves firmness, confidence, and a strong will. A poodle is an intelligent type and will be a bit challenging to train, so they need more patience and understanding. Always start training once you establish what you want and need for your pup. Train your puppies before reaching a year old, starting from simple commands until more difficult ones. Here are tips to make training easier for your boodle: Plan What You Want To Teach: To avoid confusion for your dog, make sure you have a plan as to what commands you want your dog to learn. Schedule Shorter Sessions: The reason for this is to have a higher attention span. If you think long sessions bore your hybrid, cut them down to at least 30 minutes to an hour to ensure, you have their full attention. Practice Positive Reinforcement: a poodle is an intelligent breed, and they remember when you praise them for doing something right. They tend to be shy and aggressive towards new people, which might be the case for your boodle. You can visit the vet and ask for tips, or you can bring them to the park until they familiarize themselves with different people and dogs as well. Potty Training: This is an essential type of training for almost all dogs. It saves you effort and money, and it also lessens the stress of accidentally stepping on unwanted stuff. Throughout history, pit bulls are known and recognized as dangerous and aggressive. On the other hand, poodles require mental stimulation and constant socialization. A mix of the two breeds will still require socialization training. Your pitbull poodle mix can be stubborn at times, but they are also easy to train. Make it a habit to remind family members that your dog needs to exercise, so that you can take turns as to who will take the dog out for a walk. Having a big space is ideal for the energetic side of your dog. To avoid this, make sure your Poodle Pitbull mix gets at least 45 minutes to an hour of exercise every day. Such a Boodle has a curly coat that collects loose fur and dander instead of letting it fall off. However, this type of coat is prone to tangles and mats so it needs daily brushing to stay clean, shiny, and tangle-free. A wooly Boodle will also need more frequent baths than most canines. The tight curls trap dirt, debris, loose hair, and other junk. A Boodle that takes after a Pitbull will have a smoother coat. This pup will be fine with a weekly brush and can go several weeks or months without a bath. Brush their teeth several times a week , and clean their ears to prevent excessive wax buildup. Do Pitbull Poodle Mixes shed? The Pitbull Poodle Mix hypoallergenic is a boon for those with allergies. If your pup inherits the Pitbull coat, expect them to be moderate shedders. However, even if your Boodle takes after his Poodle parent, they would still shed. The only difference is that the curly coat prevents loose hair from floating away, making it stick to their coat instead. Your Boodle would need daily brushing to get rid of the loose hair. You must make sure that your pup eats only what he needs considering his size, age, weight, and activity level. It is best to consult with a vet regarding how much food your Pit-Poodle should eat each day. Avoid feeding your Pitbull Poodle Mix table scraps, especially greasy food items and things that contain salt, sugars, and spices. Eating such items can cause toxicity and lead to long-term health problems like obesity and high cholesterol levels. Always feed your pup a natural canine diet. Eating a lot at once can cause bloat, which can be life-threatening. You can prevent this by breaking their daily meals into two. These are some diseases common to both parent breeds. Hip Dysplasia The standard Poodle and Pitbull Mix are heavy dogs; therefore, the resultant pups can be predisposed to hip dysplasia. None of these are life-threatening but may lead to blindness and require frequent visits to the vet. Obesity Obesity is a gateway disease to numerous other health problems. Breeders developed Toy Poodles in 18th century England as smaller versions of their German predecessors. The Toy Poodle began to represent social status, and nobles would decorate their dogs in high fashion of the time. They became so popular, in fact, that they were one of the first toy breeds recognized by the Kennel Club. Toy Poodles are smart cookies. Their intelligence is one of their predominant features, and is often showcased during obedience training. These dogs have tremendous problem-solving capabilities that make them ideal for competitions. On the other hand, this same intelligence makes for an easily bored pup. They need mental stimulation, like challenging games and toys , to keep their busy minds occupied. The Toy Poodle may also be suspicious of strangers and slow to warm up to new people. This dog breed can adapt to a wide range of living situations due to their small size. As a matter of fact, they have trouble dealing with any kind of alone time. As such, the Toy Poodle is an excellent companion animal for people who love a little company. There are a few health conditions that Toy Poodles are more susceptible to than other dog breeds. For example, they may suffer from eye disorders, like cataracts, or blood clotting disorders, like Hemophilia. Because of their size, they may also bear the risk of dental crowding, kneecap migration, or trachea instability. With regular visits to the veterinarian, many of these potential health concerns can be comfortably managed. Owners typically have an easy time during obedience training with Toy Poodles. Their intelligence often hastens the training process. However, they can present destructive tendencies when left to their own devices for too long. Toy Poodles have famously low-shedding coats. They lack undercoats, so their shedding is minimal. Their fur is hypoallergenic and mats rather than sheds. These pups will only need to be groomed to prevent matting and increase shine. Usually, brushing your Toy Poodle once or twice a week and grooming every six weeks is sufficient. As a small dog breed, they are more prone to developing dental disease so good dental care is important. Poodles are an active breed in general, and Toy Poodles in specific are just as active. brilliant english bulldog puppies - Breeding rights with a male or having a male around. Who gets to first greet the owner or someone else. Fights over toys, food, or attention. Rights to privileged areas such as beds, lounging areas, doorways, food bowls, etc. Females closer in age can have even more problems with aggression than females of different ages. This is because they are similar in rank to each other. However, older females can still show hostility towards younger ones, so you must be careful. Contrary to many claims, getting female German Shepherds spayed has not been proven to help reduce aggressive behavior. One of the most extensive studies of almost 11, dogs proved that spayed and neutered dogs actually show considerably more aggression. You can find the full study here. The best thing to do when you have two female German Shepherds who will not get along is to contact a canine behaviorist to resolve the problem. A dog behaviorist is a qualified professional with expert knowledge of dog behavior and communication and will formulate a plan to work with you. If all else fails, you can consider rehoming one of them; however, this will be a heartbreaking decision and probably the last thing you want to do. If you do not want to part with either of the dogs, you will need to keep them separated, especially when unattended. Making The Introduction If you are set on having two female German Shepherds living together, there are a few things you can do to try to help them get along. Here are a few steps to follow: Evaluate your current dog — If you are still considering adding a second female German Shepherd to your home, you will want to evaluate your current female German Shepherd. Think how she might handle having a second dog in the family. If she already shows signs of aggression, has difficulty following commands, or with training, it might not be a good idea to bring another dog into her life. Picking the dog — If you feel your female German Shepherd will do well with another female companion, the next step is selecting your second dog. Try to find a socialized German Shepherd with a similar personality to your current female. If you have an outgoing, energetic dog, look for a puppy that is also outgoing and energetic. Location for introducing the dogs — When you introduce your dogs, do not do it at home. If you try to introduce them at home, your current dog may feel the need to protect her property and show her dominance. Select a neutral location, so they are less likely to view each other as intruders. How to introduce the dogs — Once you have selected a location for them to meet, ensure each dog is wearing a sturdy collar and leash. You also want each dog to be accompanied by a human they respect and listen to. Use Positive Reinforcement — You want the meeting experience for each dog to be as positive as possible right from the start. When the dogs first come in contact, let them sniff and greet each other as they usually would. During this time, calmly and positively encourage each dog verbally. After a few minutes, give them each a command to sit or lay down. This will provide them with a break from each other. After the short break, allow them to explore one another once again. As things progress positively, you can start to walk them or do other controlled activities together that still allow them to become familiar with each other. Look for negative body posture — If either dog shows signs of negative body posture while interacting, divert their attention back to you by giving some commands. Use positive reinforcement to keep your dog calm and know everything is safe. Once the mood has changed, let the dogs interact once again. Bringing them home — As soon as the dogs are comfortable with each other in a neutral location, you can bring them home. Keep them in a separate car when bringing them home unless you feel they are ready to share a car. Once you arrive, allow the newer dog to enter the house first. This will minimize any territorial issues that your older dog may have. Feeding and treats — Dogs can become very protective of their food, so ensure you always give each dog her own bowl of food to eat. The same thing goes for treats and bones. Make sure each dog is given a treat or has her bone to chew on. Never let the dogs eat near each other unsupervised. It is never a good idea to leave them alone, unattended, at any age. Female German Shepherds, as mentioned earlier, can become aggressive toward one another later in life. Of course, you can leave them in their own crates for a while. To learn more about how long you can leave a German Shepherd in a crate , this post gives a ton of detail, including the best crate size to use and other helpful tips. Introducing two female German Shepherds to each other is easier than maintaining them in the long run, thereby controlling aggression and ensuring harmony. Allow them to understand each other and take as much time as required. Intervening in the middle and worrying about aggression can only discourage them from getting along. Training needs a longer duration than usual. Spend time with them together. Spending time with one female GSD over the other can also provoke the other one to turn aggressive. Cuddling and playing with them simultaneously will promote positives in them. Be patient throughout the process and you can eventually get there. What is the Best Combination to Have? If you want to have two same-sexed German Shepherds, consider having two males over two females. Although male German Shepherds can also show aggression towards each other, it tends to be less severe than female aggression. When two males are together, they often fight over domestic dominance. They will typically try to prove their dominance by marking territory, making noise, showing off, etc. Often, an older male German Shepherd will express dominance, and the younger one will submit and accept that dominance. If this is the case, there tends to be little aggression. Females, on the other hand, will fight over breathing rights. Female fights are much more severe and tense than male dog fights and can often end up with one of the dogs badly hurt or even killed. Female on female aggression tends to be more dangerous than male on male. The best thing to do if you want to have two German Shepherds get along is to have one male and one female. With a dog of each gender, you are less likely to run into aggression and behavioral issues caused by dominance or territorial issues. Are you looking to buy something for your dog? Make sure to check out my favorite dog gear below. Until I met Forest and River. Forest was first. I happened to be living with them at the time, and I really did not care for the furry child who had entered the home. Forest peed and pooped everywhere, and then there was all the biting and the chewing and the howling. I swear, dog care books conveniently downplay the actual reality of daily puppy life, which is mostly that they chew on everything. Photo courtesy Jessica Pineda That all changed when I went with my brother-in-law and niece when they took Forest to a trainer. Watching Forest learn things and seeing how smart he was changed my entire outlook on dogs. I never truly realized what they were capable of and how eager they were to learn. I never realized how easy it is to teach them, and what kind of bond it built between you and your pet. I devoured books and YouTube videos on behavior, training and breed history. I quickly taught Forest a variety of tricks and trained certain behaviors, like not pulling me down the street when we went for walks. I was obsessed. So I yearned for the day I could get my own. Not soon after, I met River. I was well into my dog obsession when I met River. All I know is that she was found wandering the streets with a shattered femur and was between 9 and 11 months old. While River recovered, I knew I needed to find a place that would let me have a big dog like her. And again, with luck, I found a little guest house on a 5-acre property. It was the perfect place to have a dog, and the moment River was recovered enough that I could adopt her, I did. Then, almost a week after I moved into my new place and brought River home, I got a text from my niece. She asked if I would be interested in taking Forest too, since she was concerned about his quality of life. Without me, Forest was kind of neglected, everyone too busy to play or walk him. Without hesitation, I agreed. One German Shepherd puppy is a handful, but two? I know, I know. I feel you. I had no idea what I was getting into, even in just introducing the two. Also, walking two dogs at once is a sure-fire way to die when you trip over their leashes. Unless you want to watch your house and yard destroyed by a bored dog, you have to put in the time or you will be in over your head fast. And even though I did it, I would not recommend that anyone adopt two German Shepherds at once unless they have experience with the breed. All dogs deserve that, of course, but I feel for these super-smart, active breeds — they really need it. If I had known what joy Forest and River would bring me, I would have become a dog owner much sooner. However, one advantage this breed offers is how eager even puppies are to learn. When you start training early and are consistent, your puppies will understand what they are supposed to do very easily. Puppies raised together are likely to bond quickly. As puppies that show the promise of becoming large dogs very quickly, getting both puppies used to going on walks or other activities is essential for them to get used to interacting with new people. Better socialization makes all the difference. If you live in a setting where your puppies will have easy access to the outdoors, it will be that much easier to help them meet their exercise needs. Because young GSDs are high-energy , exercise always helps keep them calm and focused. Having two puppies who grow up together will help them get along better. Many of the conflicts that might otherwise arise between dogs are less of a problem with two German Shepherd puppies who have grown up together. Dogs that learn to share resources easily will be less possessive. Being able to train both dogs at the same time, as is often the case with puppies, is another significant advantage. Being able to teach both dogs at once makes it easier to train them in less time. The sooner your puppies are trained, the better for them. Shepherds raised in the same household from an early age could have fewer problems than you would find from adding another dog later. After all, an adult dog introduced into a home could have acquired bothersome behavior that is hard to cope with. However, buying or adopting two puppies may not be the best solution for every household. There are advantages to adding an adult dog as well. Owners will do well to consider the advantages or disadvantages of both situations. One common concern that German Shepherd owners have is whether a second dog might eliminate dog aggression issues. A second GSD should seldom become a problem. Your main concerns should involve the feasibility of an additional pet in general. All of these are vital factors in any new dog. One of the most severe mistakes for anyone who gets a new dog to make is giving the new dog a lot of attention while spending less attention on the first dog. It will be very important to find a healthy balance in how you provide attention to your dogs. Each dog will require individual attention to make sure they receive the right amount of interaction. However, one dog should not receive a large amount of attention in front of the other. Doing so will probably encourage a rivalry between the two. Another consideration besides time and attention that you will need to keep in mind if acquiring a second dog is what resources you have for additional food, exercise, and veterinary care. The decision to take a second German Shepherd is important. German Shepherd Dogs can have special feeding needs, including eating foods that protect joint health. Food sensitivities and allergies may require one dog to have special food. Daily walks can be helpful but are better if someone else in your household can assist. Supervised play in a fenced-in yard might be the best option. The higher veterinary costs are also an important consideration. German Shepherds are susceptible to health issues that range from bone and joint problems to gastric torsion. When you have two of these dogs, being able to afford care is vital. Adding a second Shepherd to your home when you already have one can be a good choice. In most cases, the dogs should get along well, with minimal fuss, as long as you supervise both of them. However, making sure that you are in a position to handle both dogs is ideal. If you have plans to deal with any of these circumstances, adding another German Shepherd might be a good choice for you. Your current dog will probably adjust well to the second dog, with a similar size, temperament, and activity level. One of the things you might need to think about if you decide to have two German Shepherds is whether you want to have two dogs of the same or opposite gender. There are advantages and disadvantages that are important for GSD owners to consider. Contrary to popular belief, neither gender is more or less likely to have aggression issues. Some dogs of the same gender get along perfectly well, while others do better with another dog of the opposite sex. A dog that is reactive toward dogs of the same sex would probably do better with a dog of the opposite sex. The good thing is that taking steps like having both dogs altered when possible and practical, as well as making sure the introductions are done correctly, will help ensure that both dogs get along as well as possible. Taking some steps to ensure that the introduction goes as smoothly as possible is a good idea. This video demonstrates how smoothly an introduction can go when done properly. Meeting in a neutral setting works best for these dogs. Both dogs should be leashed for the best results. In fact, taking a walk together is one of the best ways to start the introduction. The dogs should be kept at a healthy distance from each other during their walk to avoid any possible problems. After the dogs have had a chance to rest for a moment after the walk. The dogs should be allowed to smell each other for a couple of minutes. After they do this, it should be safe to allow them to interact with the leashes still attached. Watch the behavior of the German Shepherd Dogs very carefully. If you see behavior that indicates a willingness to play, like bowing or tail-wagging, encourage the dogs to play together gently to help them get better acquainted. When both dogs are going to be in the house together, it is an excellent idea to let the new dog in first. Let your first dog in next. Make sure you keep an eye on the dogs so you can separate them if there are signs of aggression or tension that could escalate. If the dogs show any signs of hostility, separate them, and only allow them to interact again after they have calmed down. For at least the first few days, you should make sure the German Shepherds are not left alone unattended. Making sure each dog has a training crate or other dedicated area to sleep will help the dogs maintain proper space. Dogs who have had proper introductions are not usually as likely to fight. Ensuring the dogs have separate areas to rest and sleep helps to make a difference. Even though these methods are not entirely fool-proof, they are helpful. In some cases, aggression has its roots in two intact dogs of the same gender having problems. These types of disputes have their origins in sexual frustration. However, there is a remedy in the form of having one or both dogs spayed or neutered. Neutering can help eliminate aggression, especially in the case of two males. Aggression between two German Shepherds can be terrifying, considering the size that most of these dogs reach. Even though steps like trying and having the dogs altered can make a difference, aggression between the two could occur at some point. Dogs this size who start fighting can inflict injury on each other or anyone who tries to stop the fight. Knowing how to stop a row in a way that reduces the threat of harm is essential. When your dogs have difficulty getting along, it is vital that you know how to deal with the situation. Any number of circumstances can lead to dogs fighting, from quarrels over food to fights over toys. If your dogs have a disagreement, you need to know how to eliminate the problem in a positive way that reduces the possibility of injury. Having taken steps to introduce your dogs properly will reduce the likelihood of the fight being drawn-out. Remove whatever is triggering their hostility, such as food or a toy. Separate the two dogs to give them time to calm down. Once the dogs have had a chance to settle down, allow them back into the same area, with proper supervision. Reward both dogs with praise and treats or pats for behaving themselves. Rewards for good behavior will accomplish more than negativity. Two German Shepherds can be a perfect addition to any household, regardless of whether they have been raised together or if one of the dogs is a later addition. Being adequately prepared and making proper introductions makes a world of difference. So, two German Shepherd Dogs would be even better, right? German Shepherds that are of similar size, temperament, and energy levels get along the best. Are you wondering if having two German Shepherds means twice the goodness or double the trouble? Keep reading to understand the potential risks and best conditions for raising two puppies together. The short answer is yes, you sure can! German Shepherd Dogs GSD are fiercely loyal and develop bonds quickly, even in as little as a few weeks. They are also exceptionally intelligent which makes training them much quicker than with other breeds. This is great if you train one puppy first and then the second. However, they must trust and respect you before you train them together. If their bond is stronger with each other instead of with you, the training will be poor. Raising them simultaneously too early may create an inseparable bond that inhibits them from socializing with other dogs and humans. On the other hand, they might develop the exact opposite relationship with each other and end up fighting one another instead. Because they can easily view the second dog as intruding on their territory, and they might not want to share the house or you. There is also the risk of littermate syndrome, a situation where two German Shepherds start fighting so severely that it leads to having to relocate one of the dogs to a new home. This will allow you to focus your attention on training the first puppy who can then help you train the next. While they are still puppies, they can teach each other to share resources and your attention. Your first puppy will adjust better because both will be more willing to play, will be less likely to fight, and neither of them will be able to dominate the other. However, some GSDs will get along better with a puppy of the same sex. The results of their relationship vary from case to case, but it is something you still have to consider. What is much more important to consider is how well your current puppy gets along with other dogs right now. All of that to say: you can have two German Shepherds of either gender so long as the age gap is small and the first puppy you have has been properly socialized. Introduction Have the two puppies meet in a neutral area, such as a park, rather than in the house several days before you bring the new puppy home. Keep them leashed. Stop the session if one of the dogs gets nervous. Each puppy should have their own space in a quiet area around the house, especially when they want to get away from its new sibling. Be sure to encourage the new puppy to recognize their bed by teaching them to sit in it, and if they do, give them a treat. It helps if you do your best to show both dogs the same affection and give them the same attention with exercise, treats, etc. The pros of having two German Shepherds Double the love and fun Your first dog already brought a lot of fun and love, adding another dog will undoubtedly bring twice the joy and love into the family. Making training easier If you have a well-trained dog at home to set a good example, then it will be easier to train the new puppy you bring home. The old dog will be able to teach the new dog some tricks as it will look upon it for guidance. For example, a second dog in your home may give your dog company and reduce destructive behavior due to boredom or separation anxiety. Having one more companion for your family Having another dog can give your family one more furry companion: While you may want to have a good run with one dog, and your son may want to play fetch in the backyard with the other. The cons of having two German Shepherds More time and efforts Obviously enough, one and one is two. Make sure you have enough time for one dog before considering a second dog. They shed all year round and if you introduce one more GSD to your home. You may need to put up with doubling the fur — which means more time for picking up the furballs on the floor or a more powerful vacuum. And you have heard of littermate syndrome or two female GSDs getting into serious fights in the same household. In extreme cases, it may lead to re-homing of either of the dog or keeping them in separate rooms for good. Should you get two males, two females, or two opposite-sex German Shepherds? To make our points more relevant, we spent some time researching the internet and social media to get the best possible answer for this specific question. Here are what the current German Shepherd owners have to say about having two German Shepherds when it comes to choosing the sex: Thinking that both ladies may work it out together is not a good choice. Very likely, fights may escalate, and one dog may severely injure or kill the other. This seems to happen most often when the two dogs are close in age or when one dog is older and a newer dog is introduced to the pack. You are playing with fire with two males. My advice is to definitely get a female if you already have a male. They played together fine for months. Then they stopped play-fighting and fought for real, and part of an ear was bitten off in the process. We have to keep them separated now. Tiffany N. With a female, there will be no problem because a male dog is never aggressive to a female dog. Schweizer V. Regardless of the breed, while many dogs of the same sex do get along peacefully, having two dogs of the same sex may pose a higher risk than the opposite sex. Key takeaway: Get two GSDs of opposite sex In a nutshell, it seems that getting the second dog of the opposite sex is a wiser choice. So, if you already have a male dog, choose a female, and vice-versa. In most cases, fixing your dogs can reduce their aggressive behavior. Neutering can help to calm aggressive dogs and can stop them from roaming. In fact, neutering has been proven to create a much happier and calmer male dog over time. When a female dog enters heat, the hormones in her body change. Unspayed females sometimes compete for the attention of a male dog by fighting. Spaying your female dog can also be a significant improvement in her behavior. How to stop two German Shepherds from a fight? Same-sex aggression can be common with this breed. If you try to separate them in the wrong way, you may also get injured or things could get worse. If your dogs just started the fight, do not yell and try your best to stay calm. Do NOT grab them at the collar or else they might think you want to join the fight. If you have access to a water hose, spray on them before things get worse. Once the dogs are apart and you try to move them in a circle. So they cannot turn and bite you. Pull them away to another room or to the yard. At the end of the day. They need to learn to leave each other alone. But yes find a trainer in your area and ask them what they think and try to work with them. Is it a good idea to get two dogs from the same litter? Many dog behaviorists, trainers, breeders, and shelters discourage adopting siblings from the same litter. It is because the two puppies are deeply bonded. It impedes their individual ability to socialize with humans and other dogs. As a breeder, I would never sell two puppies to a home, or one to a home that just got or is planning to get a second puppy. They need individual attention, training and to bond with you, not the other pup. Signs of littermate syndrome include fearfulness of strangers, dogs and any moving objects they saw, such as runners or bikers. They may develop intense anxiety when separated and have difficulty learning basic obedience skills. In extreme cases, the two dogs will fight incessantly. Littermate syndrome can affect dogs of any breed, and it may also affect unrelated puppies who are adopted at the same time and raised together. The good news is: not all puppy pairs develop littermate syndrome and pet parents can prevent significant issues with specialized training methods. How to prevent sibling syndrome in dogs? The key is to give the puppies periodic time apart every single day. That means they should be regularly walked separately, played with separately, and trained separately. Do not allow the pups to share a crate. Feed meals separately, and out of two separate bowls. Conclusion While many male dogs, as well as female dogs, do get along peacefully, getting two dogs of the opposite sex seems to be less risky for the first time. Your worst nightmare is to have one of them re-homed simply because they do not get along. Ideally, the two dogs should have 1. At the end of the day, dogs can only be dogs, and a lot depends on your level of commitment. Further questions Should you get a young or older dog as a second dog? If you have an old dog, he may not be physically able to play with or tolerate a pup. What is the best age gap between dogs? The ideal age gap between dogs is that once your first dog has received all its basic training, it has matured to set a good example for your second dog. For many owners, this is around two years of age. Will my dog get jealous if I get another dog? Your dog is used to being your companion, and if there are other dogs that are taking you away, they may get upset, jealous, and even angry. This new puppy is also on their territory, and they may feel like their life is in jeopardy. Further readings.

The Havanese has been around for over years, coming from, as the name suggests, Havana, Cuba. According to the American Kennel Club, this is the only dog breed native to Cuba. They were originally bred as lap dogs for nobles. They are a direct descendent of the now-extinct Blanquito de la Habana, which was a descendent of the now-extinct Bichon Ternerife. It is believed that the Blanquito was crossed with the Poodle, and possibly with other Bichon breeds Maltese and Bichon Frise to create the Havanese we know and love today. If you want to make a Havapoo part of your life, please opt to adopt! Typically, miniature or toy is used, so you will likely have a small dog, as Havanese parents are also very small. Their height is typically eight to 15 inches, and they can weigh between seven and 30 pounds. They are very easy to train, quick to learn commands, and pretty good decision-makers. That being said, that intelligence can also be used for mischievous ends if your dog feels bored or neglected. Havapoos are extremely loving little lap dogs, and they are happiest with their families. While Havapoos are playful, they also tend to be calm and gentle, not quite as hyperactive as some others of their size category. This makes them great, versatile companions for all ages. As with all dogs, early training and socialization will bring out their best qualities. These hybrids are typically friendly but can have some social anxiety if not properly socialized. Havapoo Health Havapoos are generally pretty healthy dogs. Also, small dogs tend to live longer than large dogs. However, there is a possibility of a Havapoo inheriting health issues from both Havanese and Poodles. The most common issues for Havapoos include: hip dysplasia. This Havanese -poodle mix has a low-shedding, "hypoallergenic" coat , an alert but friendly nature, and an absolutely adorable look. Pair that with the breed's bright mind and moderate exercise needs, and you've got a dog who can fit right in with nearly any home or family, including first-time dog owners. Appearance With any relatively new hybrid dog breed, including the Havapoo, everything from appearance to personality can vary widely. This is true even within the same litter—especially early on, when one parent is a purebred Havanese and one is a purebred poodle. Each Havapoo puppy's looks and temperament depend on which traits he inherits from his parent breeds, so answering questions like, "how big do Havapoos get? Size, in particular, can differ greatly, with full-grown Havapoo dogs ranging from a tiny 10 pounds to as much as 45 pounds. This is because the poodle parent can be a toy , miniature , or standard poodle. But many adult Havapoos stay under 20 pounds because miniature and toy poodle parents are more common. His fluffy tail is just the cherry on top of a practically perfect little pupper. Sometimes called a poovanese, Havadoodle, or Havanoodle, the Havapoo has a soft, shiny coat that's wavy or curly much like a poodle's , and comes in just about any color. While he needs to be brushed thoroughly a few times a week to avoid tangles and mats, it's an easy enough job to do yourself, especially if you use grooming as an opportunity to snuggle and bond. Havapoos don't shed much , thanks to those poodle roots—and that makes them a good choice for people with pet allergies. But remember that no dog is truly percent hypoallergenic , regardless of how they're marketed. Temperament A bright mind, a signature bouncy gait, and a deep and abiding love of laps describes the Havapoo temperament pretty darn well. He's not only a brainy little buddy, but he's eager to learn and show off his tricks, which may be no surprise. The Havanese is known as a trick dog , and both Havanese and poodles have long histories of performing in circuses. This is an eager-to-please dog who's a delight to train using positive reinforcement , but you need to be mindful of how many treats you're giving him as a reward—he can have a tendency to put on weight. Basically, if you have a lap and love to give, they'll be your best friend. They generally get along well with other family pets, too, including cats and other dogs. But don't assume that snuggles are all he needs; this playful breed still demands daily exercise and stimulation to be happy and healthy. While Havapoos aren't typically a yappy dog, they are alert and can be quick to bark when someone new approaches. They're generally equally quick to stop and befriend the newcomer, though, so while he'll play the watchdog, don't count on your Havapoo for any guard duties. Providing your Havapoo puppy with early socialization and training he'll do great in puppy kindergarten classes! Living Needs Do you live in a home or apartment that allows dogs? Congratulations—you have a perfect space for a Havapoo. Even the largest of Havapoos aren't terribly big dogs, and they're as happy in an apartment as they are in a home with a big, fenced yard. Just make sure you're prepared to give them the opportunity to be active each day. He says Havapoo owners should think twice about taking their pup to the dog park. Fortunately, Havapoos don't require a park full of pups to meet their social needs. As long as they have you by their side, their tails will keep wagging. The Havapoo is a quintessential lap dog and will share snuggles with the whole family, but, as with any dog, small children must be supervised around him. But, because the Havapoo's coat will vary a bit depending on how much poodle versus Havanese genes prove dominant, you may need to enlist the help of a professional groomer to keep him looking—and feeling—good, Miller says. Some experts believe this hair should be plucked regularly to prevent ear infections, while others believe that plucking itself can actually cause damage to the skin that leads to ear infections. Miller leans toward plucking, "so that the canals are more open to the air and the pet owners can more easily use ear cleaning solution routinely to keep those ears clear. The Havapoo's fur can also lead to trichiasis , or facial hair rubbing on the eye, Miller says, as well as excessive tearing, which can lead to mats and skin infections near the eye. Havapoos can get feces stuck in the hair around their rear end if this area is not kept well groomed. And like all dog breeds, your Havapoo will benefit from regular nail trims —don't let him click clack across the floor! When it comes to meeting your Havapoo's physical and mental stimulation needs, it should be a pleasure. He's a playful and intelligent dog and wants to make you happy. Using consistent reward-based training will go a long way in a short time. Some will love a certain food, while others crave praise, toys, or games. But be careful not to overdo it on the snacks, as this can impact their weight. Some dogs adapt, but others require surgery to correct the condition. Dental disease is another common issue for small dogs. Here's what you need to know: According to the Havanese Club of America , health issues you may see in this generally healthy breed include eye disorders, chondrodysplasia, deafness , heart murmurs , Legg-Calve-Perthes disease , and patellar luxation. Poodles can be prone to Addison's disease , which affects the adrenal glands, endocrine diseases such as diabetes , Cushing's disease , and bloat , according to the Poodle Club of America. History Although it's impossible to say exactly when and where the Havapoo originated, it's generally believed they came to rise in popularity in the past 20—30 years in the U. His origins may not be clear, but there's no mystery as to why this hybrid breed appealed to breeders and dog lovers alike. Pairing the Havanese's affectionate, funny personality with the poodle's allergy-friendly coat and athleticism makes perfect sense. Be particularly wary of any Havapoo breeder who claims to have mini or "teacup" Havapoo puppies and is marketing them as a unique breed. Unscrupulous breeders are quick to act when a breed—including a crossbreed—becomes popular, and they go on to breed dogs in inhumane conditions, not providing the type of care and attention that responsible breeders give to their dogs. Be smart about shopping for your best furry friend and avoid falling for a puppy mill scheme by watching out for these red flags: There are multiple mixed breeds for sale from the same breeder. The website offers specific wait times for puppies. The breeder offers to ship puppies. Havapoos aren't to be confused with the similarly named Cavapoo a Cavalier King Charles spaniel and poodle mix. Despite the different parent breeds, the two hybrids can look similar. Was this page helpful? What is a Havapoo? This small designer breed is a mixture of a Poodle and a Havanese. It is difficult to say exactly when they were first bred by dog breeders, but we can assume it is from the surge of popularity of Poodle designer dogs, caused by the Labradoodle in the s. The Poodle is originally from Germany, bred to retrieve waterfowl more than years ago. They were then favored by French nobles and aristocrats — their good looks and entertaining personality made them popular companions. The Havanese breed originated in Cuba, it was brought over by Spanish colonists and bred as lapdogs for nobles. Over years of refining the breed have resulted in what we know today as the Havanese. This new mix dog is not recognized by the American Kennel Club, but the Poodle is part of the non-sporting group and the Havanese is part of the toy group. The cost of a Havapoo pup will vary depending on the breeder and the parents. You can expect a healthy Havanese Poodle to live between years. But looking at each parent breed will help give us an idea about what your pup can look like. Some Havapoo puppies will favor their Poodle genes and others may inherit a Havanese look, or they could have a mixture of both. They will have a small roundish head, with a slight but definitive stop. They will have well-set dark eyes, most commonly brown. Their ears will be floppy and fall down onto their cheeks. Their small rectangular build and short legs will give them a toy-like look — this is exaggerated if they are bred with the Miniature Poodle. No matter the unpredictability of the Havapoo look, there is no doubt they will be cute and adorable. Height and Weight The Havapoo can range in size, it mainly depends on which Poodle their parent is standard or miniature. The Miniature Poodle can weigh between lb and stands between inches. Whereas, the Standard Poodle can weigh between lb and stand over 15 inches tall. The Havanese breed can weigh lb and stand up to .You should expect your Havapoo to weigh around lb and stand between inches tall — the smaller Havapoo is bred from Miniature Poodles. Colors Both the Poodle and the Havanese have a wide range of coat colors solids, bi-colors, and tri-colors. According to the AKC breed standard, Havanese dogs have 16 official colors. Some of these include black, black, and silver, chocolate, white, fawn, silver and gold. The Poodle breed standard states there are 10 official colors, some of these include apricot, black, blue, brown, gray, silver, and cream. So your Havapoo can have any number of colors! It is also common for the Havapoo to have white markings on their chest, face, and on their feet. Coat One thing you can almost guarantee with your Havanese Poodle is their luscious coat. They can have either a medium or long-length coat. The coat can either be wavy or curly, depending on which parent breed the Havapoo pup favors the most. Havapoo Temperament Just like their appearance, the Havapoo temperament is unpredictable as they could favor one of their parent breeds traits over the other. To understand the Havapoo dog more, we can look at each parent breed. The Poodle is famous for its intelligence. They are also very sensitive to our body language and voices, which might give them an edge when it comes to obedience and socializing. They can be shy with strangers at first, but once they are familiar they will come around. Miniature Poodles are likely to be more excitable and anxious than Standard Poodles, so this is something to consider. It should be noted that Miniature Poodles are more likely to be shy and fearful in new situations; socialization can help a Mini Poodle to become more confident. Havanese are affectionate dogs, they are more confident and outgoing than the Poodle. These pups are mischievous and playful and will make their own fun, by chewing your shoes if you have not given them enough attention. So what does this mean for your Havanese Poodle mix? The Havapoo is a friendly companion dog that will thrive in a loving home. Being a very loving and trustworthy mix breed, they are not good guard dogs. They are great with dogs and other pets. When introducing a Havanese Poodle to other pets, introduce them gradually, by presenting them with something with their scent on and then let them meet face-to-face. Your Havapoo will always need their favorite chew toy. The Havapoo is not known to be yappy, but they can and do use their voice! They will bark when playing or when they are excited. Havanese Poodle mix dog is great with kids — they love playtime and a nice cuddle session and will be gentle and loving towards children. In addition to them being eager to please, they do very well with dog training. They do best with positive reinforcement, so give your dog a reward when they follow your command or when they stop unwanted behaviors. As they are a dog that is sensitive to your body language and voice tone, your Havapoo will respond positively if you are confident and give them encouragement. If, as an owner, you are stressed out, your dog will sense this and become anxious as well. Do not punish your Havanese Poodle, it will stress them out and even encourage them to continue the behavior. Socialization is just as important as training. Even though the Havapoo is a fairly sociable dog, they still need socializing in new situations as a pup. Introduce your puppy to new experiences and situations. Being highly intelligent and energetic, the Poovanese needs to keep its mind occupied. Give them a puzzle feeder, or play games with them like hide and seek or go find the treat. Teaching your dog new and fun tricks will also keep their mind sharp. Caring for a Havapoo The Havapoo is a fairly small dog and can adapt well to apartment life. They are suited for any type of family including singles, couples, big families, or empty-nest homes. As long as you give them enough attention, including their exercise needs, they are quite happy to just be by your side. Exercise Requirements They may be small, but that does not mean they are lazy. In fact, they are very energetic and playful. With all this energy to burn, they should be getting at least 1 hour of exercise a day. They also need a couple of hours of indoor playtime, so buy them a few toys. Grooming and Shedding Grooming your Poovanese is fairly easy. A simple brush every other day to prevent tangles and matting will be plenty. Only give them a bath when they are particularly smelly or if they have been playing around in the mud. Bathing a dog too much can wash away their natural oils, leaving their coat dry and dull. General dog grooming should also be taken care of. This includes brushing their teeth twice a week, trimming their nails, and cleaning their ears. Feeding and Diet Knowing what to feed your Havapoo dog is not an exact science, you should feed them a balanced doggy diet with all their nutritional needs in check. Dogs need: Protein they are the basic building blocks for cells and tissues Dietary fats this is where they will get their most concentrated form of energy Carbohydrates Fiber this keeps their digestive system running nicely Vitamins and minerals are also a necessity Feed your Havapoo high-quality natural dog food and make sure to avoid dry food that has artificial filler ingredients like corn syrup. How much you feed them depends on their weight. If your Havapoo is 15lb they should be fed around 1 cup of kibble each day or if they are 30 lb they should have around 1. They can also be given fruit and veg, to help them get the vitamins and minerals they need. Known Health Problems Havapoos are a designer dog mix, meaning they have less chance of inheriting genetic disorders, as they have more genetic variance. They are prone to developing hip dysplasia and patella luxation — these are joint and bone issues. Patella Luxation is more likely to occur with Miniature Poodles. This is when the kneecap dislocates causing pain and lameness. With planning ahead you could get reimbursed for every vet bill from now on! Puppies vs adult rescue dogs Havanese Poodle Mix Appearance Like any hybrid dog, the Havapoo can take on any of the characteristics of either parent breed. This makes it somewhat difficult to predict the exact appearance and characteristics of the Poodle Havanese mix. To add to the unpredictable nature of this hybrid, the size and weight of a grown Havapoo will largely depend on what type of Poodle the parent pup was. Likely Traits Generally speaking, I find that adult Havapoos are small to midsized dog, usually weighing in at between 12 and 45 pounds and measuring 8 to 15 inches tall. Poodles and Havanese dogs can both range from colorful patterened pups to plain solid colors, so pretty much anything goes with a Havanese Poodle mix litter of puppies. Havanese Poodle Mix Temperament The social instincts of the Havapoo are generally agreeable, but early socialization is important. These dogs will usually get along well with strangers and other animals, so long as they are exposed to new faces from a young age. A Havanese Poodle mix should get along well with children. Although I do advise caution with very young kids, for the safety of both the dog and the owner! Their loving, trusting attitude and small size does not make them a very effective watchdog. However, it also leads to significantly less barking than many other small breeds. They are also highly intelligent — both parent breeds are among the smartest dog breeds out there. The Havapoo will respond well to positive reinforcement training using treats and other rewards. And they can be very tuned-in to your emotions and attitude. Do your best to be patient and not raise your voice. Socialization Is Key While typically a friendly breed, the Havapoo can suffer from so-called small dog syndrome. Be sure to socialize your young pup early with other dogs, other pets, and humans. They enjoy frequent walks and ideally should have 1—3 hours of activity per day. Younger dogs tend to have more energy, and this breed in particular often mellows out after a few years. Havanese Poodle Mix Health This is typically a relatively healthy breed, with an average lifespan of 10—14 years. However, just like any other dog, a Havanese Poodle mix will inherit some of the potential health concerns of its parents. One common issue with both parent breeds is skin allergies and irritation. Proper grooming and diet can help reduce the likelihood of skin issues. The Havanese breed is also prone to some developmental abnormalities, including skeletal defects and osteochondrodysplasia. Eye issues are also often observed, and cataracts are common in older Havapoos. Havapoos are known to be prone to hip dysplasia, patellar luxation and related issues. As long as they are socialized early, they tend to get along great with just about everyone — from adults to kids to other dogs and even cats! Socialization from a young age is quite important with this breed. So long as you socialize your pup and raise it with love and care, it should make for an excellent family dog! Rescue Dogs We believe that every dog deserves a loving home, that said, there are some things to be aware of. This can lead to some behavioral issues, particularly with more aggressive breeds. Havapoo Puppy Breeders Most people looking for a Havanese Poodle mix will want a puppy to join their family. Search for a breeder that has an aim beyond money in mind when they produce a litter. Health testing and good care cost a lot a of dollars. But when you meet the litter and their mother, look at how she interacts with her owner. Does she have a strong bond and know her name? Is the breeder itching to tell you what a fabulous companion she is?
