As long as they are taken to their vet appointments with regularity, Labs will usually feel just fine. Yellow Labs are loyal companions with few drawbacks. Treats never hurt, of course. This, paired with their eagerness to please, makes them a highly trainable dog breed that is a good fit for owners of any experience level. With minimal training, these dogs can control their barking and digging without much trouble. Labs have very short, double-layered, and water-resistant fur. Its density protects them from the cold, so they will often try to swim any time of year. They experience heavier seasonal shedding twice a year and slight shedding throughout the year. Giving them a good brush once a week or a few times a week should keep their coats shiny and healthy. Other grooming tasks include nail trimming, ear care, and dental care. Proper dental care for dogs includes brushing their teeth or using an enzyme toothpaste every day. This helps prevent the tartar buildup that causes dental diseases like gum disease and tooth decay. The Golden Shepherd tends to be a friendly, energetic, and affectionate dog that is loyal to their family and tends to be protective of them. Although they are not recognized by the American Kennel Club, they are recognized by other notable organizations like the American Canine Hybrid Club, Designer Breed Registry, and more. A Golden Shepherd tends to bring the all-around friendly personality of the Golden Retriever and the intelligence and devotion of the German Shepherd into one dog. They love their families and tend to get along with everyone including children. These dogs are not necessarily suspicious of strangers, but they are alert and will tend to bark if they see something they feel you need to know about. Golden Shepherds are moderately adaptable dogs. Because they are high-energy, they tend to do better in homes with yards where they can run. They can adapt to apartment living as long as plenty of time is dedicated to giving them the daily exercise they need. They tend to do well in most climates. But, as with any dog breed, they are sensitive to heat. Because Golden Shepherds are devoted to their families and thrive on spending time with them, they do not like to be left alone for long periods of time. A mixed-breed dog can inherit the potential health issues common to one, both, or neither of their parent breeds. As a larger, barrel-chested dog breed, the Golden Shepherd, like their parent breeds, is also at a higher risk for bloat. The Golden Shepherd is a highly trainable dog breed. The Goldens we Breed: We have three spectrums of Golden pups and parents, primarily based on their coloring - See our "parents" page for complete information 1 English Cream bred with another English Cream. These come primarily from "Gold-Rush Kennels" lineage who have a long history of top dogs. These are the darker to dark red goldens that we started breeding with and come from great lineage both from "Liberty Kennels" back east from which came President Fords dog; and, "Golden Glen Kennels" with a long history of hunting and obedience backgrounds. This is a combination of the two above and produces some great pups in a range of medium light English Cream Golden to a medium to light medium dark "mocha" coloring. We have chosen not to breed the "average" golden that tends to be the light medium to medium in coloring with a fairly long coat. This is what the AKC considers the "standard of the breed". You will see these around, but mostly you will see them at a dog show; and, are the only range of Goldens you'll see shown. These average goldens have been way over bred, including a fair amount of "inbreeding", and they tend to have the most health problems due to this. There are some very beautiful dogs in this category, but by far we feel you will find the most beautiful, distinctive dogs with predictable great temperaments and health within the English Creams and darker Goldens. Our personal favorites are the very dark goldens, though hard to find. They specialized in the very dark goldens for hunting and obedience trials. Unfortunately these two ends of the spectrum do have their own caveats. The English Creams are fast becoming over bred with claims of grandiose backgrounds, rampant breeding of so-called "English Creams" "specially imported" from some country by a breeder, and they don't look much like a golden, and come with arbitrary high prices. With the darker Goldens, especially the darker red's, they are in a sense being hi-jacked by seemingly elite hunting breeders, generally requiring you to only use the dog for hunting activities a "working dog" ; and, subsequently, the "Golden community" is starting to lose these dogs that make fantastic intelligent companions and they also make great "help" dogs for people. Several of our darker Goldens have gone this route, as well as for hunting. This is not to say that the English Creams aren't good for this, as well! Most of our dogs, and the pups produced, have what we call a "long flat silky coat" that tends to be easier to care for than the very thick haired show golden and with generally less shedding. The English Cream Goldens tend to be somewhat fluffier and shed a bit more, while the darker goldens tend to maintain the flatter silky coat with less shedding. All our adults have good health backgrounds with their parents or grandparents, and farther back, having lots of OFA and CERF certifications for eyes, hearts, elbows, hips; though we go more by our health history because "certifications" tend to imply to many a level of "perfection" and unfortunately these are living beings, essentially just like us humans - see our health page for more health info. The darker Goldens tend to have a penchant toward hunting senses and abilities, though pups from all parents have been used for hunting. Some people favor the lighter, english cream goldens for their somewhat more mellow temperament, and somewhat lower energy level. However, be careful of seeking "mellow".This is especially true with a golden. We've never met or heard of a true golden retriever that doesn't have an inherent mellow temperament and that wants to bond with THEIR human. All our adults and pups, light to dark, have primarily the boxy heads with shorter snouts, though some have a somewhat longer snout. They all have wonderful traits of mellow dispositions, eager to please, and are "easily" obedience trained. We do provide the "one word" commands on our website, so you can start right away, but it does take comittment. The pups are socialized and surrounded by their siblings and mother and other dogs and all of our family 3 children, carefully monitored as well as visitors. Pups generally are released to their new homes around 8 weeks old. We do not recommend getting them much later, as the sooner they are with you, the sooner, and better, they will bond with you, instead of us or their siblings or parents. The ideal bonding time is from weeks old and gradually decreases at around 12 weeks of age; however, you will not find a golden that won't bond with a human at any age! Our pups have been placed in adoptive homes ranging as pets and companions to elderly care companions to pheasant hunting dogs to mascots on fishing boats to very happy apartment dwellers to families with 4 to 5 children. As a breeder under the USDA "Animal Welfare Act" we are classified as an "Exempt Business" - Anyone who sells domestic pets directly to pet owners is exempt, regardless of sales volume, when picked up face to face or may be sight-unseen when the breeder has 4 or fewer breeding females. Such sales can be made via internet, in person, or by mail. Breed Standard GRCA Finding a Puppy Finding just the right puppy or adult for your household takes some homework, as not all puppies or breeders are created equal. Not all households can handle raising a puppy it can be a LOT of work!! After You Get Your Puppy Socialize Socialization is about safely exposing your puppy to as many things as you can, at least to those things that will be a part of their life with you. This will help them develop resilience. Exposure should be done in a way that makes the puppy as comfortable as possible. The video below has some great information about socialization. Train There are a wealth of resources available for training your puppy these days. On-line classes are great for exercises you can teach at home and while out and about. In-person classes are great for learning manners and social skills around people and other dogs. Pat was in dire need of a service dog but her circumstances made it impossible due to the fact that her husband was highly allergic to dogs. Three puppies were the result of this breeding. Of the three that were born, one of the pups proved to have an allergy friendly coat as well as a temperament that would make him a compatible guide dog. Little did he know that he was the beginning of a wonderful breed of dogs. Sultan was the first recognized Labradoodle. For over twenty years Labradoodles have made excellent service dogs as well as family pets. They have great personalities, are very smart and easily trained. They have also given severe allergy sufferers a new alternative, allowing many of them the ability to own and enjoy a dog of their own for the first time. Hybrid vigor is the phenomenon that the first cross between two unrelated purebred lines is healthier and grows better than either parent line. A very good family pet, yet not always allergy friendly. Most first generation dogs shed to some degree. First generation backcross Labradoodles F1b are the result of breeding a first generation F1 Labradoodle back to a Poodle. This results in a much more allergy friendly coat. F1b Labradoodles are no-to-low shed dogs. Multi-Gen Labradoodles are the result of breeding a higher generation Labradoodle to another higher generation Labradoodle. Their coats can range from silky waves of fleece to a curly wool. Multi-Gen Labradoodles are very allergy friendly and consistent in terms of coat quality. They are the best bet for someone who suffers with dog related allergies. Multi-Gens are no-to-low shed dogs. Non-shedding and allergy friendly. Grooming is a must if kept natural. Fleece - Long fur which can range from curly locks to wavy. This coat type tends to be allergy friendly and no to low shed. Hair — coat tends to resemble that of a Labrador. Non-shedding to heavy shedding. Least allergy friendly of the coat types. Allergy Friendly Dog, are labradoodles hypoallergenic? Are labradoodles hypoallergenic? Do not believe that all labradoodles are allergy friendly or hypoallergenic, some are more allergy friendly and some are not. NO dog is truly hypoallergenic, some breeds are better for people with allergies than others. You must determine if you are in fact allergic to dogs hair and dander or the protein that is found in a dog's saliva and urine. That is best determined by a doctor. Besides dander or saliva, you may be allergic to what a dog naturally brings in from the outside, grass, dust, and pollen on their coat versus the dog itself. In the case of saliva or outside allergens, all dogs will increase your allergy symptoms. If you believe you are allergic to dogs the best way to determine if you are allergic to labradoodles is to be around one the correct type for at least 24 hours or more. Remember there are Labradoodles flat coated, fleece coated, wool coated and Australian Labradoodles fleece coated and wool coated. If a family member has dog allergies, specifically you want at least a second generation Labradoodle OR an Australian Labradoodle. Either with a Fleece or Wool Coat. The details: Labradoodle First Generation Lab bred to Poodle Within the Labradoodle First Generation population there are primarily two different coat textures, flat coated which has a wiry feel and fleece coated with its harsh but slightly softer feel. Studies are being conducted to identify if this texture of the coat is an indication of adult coat shedding and a predictor of causing an increase in allergies. There does not seem to be a connection between Labradoodle First Generation coat length or wave and allergies, so identifying which puppy will and will not increase allergy symptoms as an adult is an educated guess at best. First Generation Labradoodles are wonderful dogs but NOT a good choice for the family with dog allergies and labradoodle allergies. Make sure you are not purchasing a dog that is sometimes called a Second Generation a first generation bred to a first generation. If your family wants a non shed dog, allergy friendly pet both parents AND grandparents need to also be allergy friendly and non shedding for this to be the BEST choice. If you are looking at a third or fourth generation Labradoodle, and both parents and grandparents of a Labradoodle puppy do not shed your puppy should not. Selective breeding for the coat trait should result in a non shedding coat. It takes at least three generations to consistently produce non shedding results and even then a breeder can occasionally find a slightly shedding dog due to recessive genetics. Australian Labradoodle? If your family wants a non shed dog, allergy friendly pet an Australian Labradoodle with a fleece or wool coat is one of the BEST choices. If both parents and grandparents of a Australian Labradoodle puppy do not shed your puppy should not. Note: Allergy friendly is different than hypoallergenic, no dog is hypoallergenic, some can be allergy friendly. Labradoodles and Australian Labradoodle dogs and puppies. Origins of the Labradoodle The Labradoodle is an Australian designer breed that results from crossing a Labrador Retriever with a Poodle. This Labradoodle was created with the needs of people with pet allergies in mind. As you may be well aware, Labradors are arguably the best service dogs out there, thanks to their high intelligence and intense loyalty. The issue with Labs, however, is that they are incredibly heavy shedders. As such, this beautiful service dog is of no use to people with pet allergies. The Poodle sheds once every 3—4 weeks, as opposed to most breeds that shed almost every other day. The result was an intelligent, sociable, and more allergy-friendly hybrid. Nonetheless, as mentioned, allergy-friendliness levels vary significantly among Labradoodles depending on the genes they inherit. This is because even pups from the same litter can differ considerably in the type of coat they sport, with some inheriting that of the Labrador and others of the Poodle. Fortunately, you can tell the more allergy-friendly ones based on their generation. In fact, Labradoodles can be classified according to generations. These include: F1 Labradoodle 1st Generation This is a first-generation Labradoodle, and it is the result of crossing a Labrador with a Poodle. As such, F1 Labradoodle pups can sport two different coats, depending on which parent they take after the most. The first is a fleece coat with a soft feel, while the other is a flat coat with a wiry feel. As such, both coats have a different rate of shedding. Despite their differences, none of either coat has been found to be allergy-friendly. Therefore, when looking for a Labradoodle, first ask whether it is an F1. If so, avoid it. Therefore, F1B Labradoodles are the best option for people who are severely allergic to pet dander. Nonetheless, you need to confirm that your F1B Labradoodle was bred in this way, as some breeders will mate two first-generation Labradoodles and offer their offspring as 2nd generation Labradoodles. However, true 3rd generation Labradoodles tend to be extremely rare. Living with a Labradoodle and allergies Even the most allergy-friendly Labradoodle sheds more frequently than the Poodle does. Fortunately, there are steps you can take to reduce the amount of dander from both your pet, as well as your home. These include: 1. Regular Grooming Regular grooming is one of the best ways of making your Labradoodle more hypoallergenic. It gets rid of dander, dust, and pollen, which are the main causes of the allergic reactions that some people have to pet hair. Therefore, if possible, consider giving your Labradoodle a light brushing every day while brushing them thoroughly at least twice a week. Consider bathing your animal using anti-allergenic shampoo at least once a month. However, since grooming will expose you to potential allergens, it would be a good idea to delegate that task to someone who does not suffer from pet allergies. Consider Non-Carpeted Flooring Carpets are an enemy when it comes to managing pet allergies because they easily trap hair and dander. Moreover, getting rid of stuck dander is almost impossible.
