Certainly for my first dog he's 5 now that was the mainstream approach but more recently I'm seeing a lot more advice from behaviourists and trainers to be with your dog until they have the confidence to settle on their own. For some that's having the dog upstairs by the bed, for me this meant sleeping on the sofa close to my most recent puppy now approaching 2 until he was quiet at night. He wasn't very quiet at all as a young dog but I think I still only slept downstairs for a couple of weeks. Don't worry at all that you haven't done this at this point I only mention it as you may reconsider what you choose to do if he's noisy at night in the future. I posted a new thread yesterday "Ted. What to do at night? Do you have any links to any sites which go into detail about the new approach to overnighting with the puppy? Last night I decided to stay downstairs with Ted. I made up a bed opposite his crate in our kitchen diner, but before that made sure he's peed and pooed outside, and did some clicker work with him settling in the crate. So far so good. I closed the crate after leaving a kibble-filled Kong with him. I also left a dimmed lamp on. He started on the Kong and I settled down to "sleep". He actually made very short work of the kibble lesson for next time - use some treat he has to work to reach! Almost immediately he started whining. I was determined this time that my wife would sleep through the night, so where I probably normally have ignored him, I sat up and did some more clicker work to quieten him down. I'll probably hear, when my wife gets up, that the sound of the clicker kept her awake! This worked for a bit, then he started again. That's how it went off and on for much of the night. Neither man nor dog got much sleep. At no time though was Ted anywhere near as loud and distressed as the night before. He was clearly not happy being in a closed crate and made a bid to chew away the fastener! This time I sat up and in an urgent whisper kept repeating "down" with no clicker, just "good boy" He eventually settled with one or two blips, each dealt with the same way. Below are some reasons why your Labrador might be doing it and what would make them more likely to be the main reason. Ancestry Wolves are known to howl to identify each other in the wild and this is a trait that present-day dogs could have kept from their ancestors. Separation Anxiety The cause could be that it has some separation anxiety. This is where it does not like being left alone and it becomes anxious when it is about to be left alone. This would be more likely to be the case if it starts howling at around the same time that you normally leave home. This type of howling will often be accompanied by other things such as destruction, pacing or other signs of distress. Communication Wolves, in the wild, will howl to tell other members of the pack where it is or to scare off other predators that are entering their territories. In the case of your Labrador, the howling could be to alert others of its location such as when it hears sirens. It could also be to warn others not to enter its territory. Environment The reason why your Labrador howls could be that it is in response to something in its environment. If it hears things such as other dogs howling , sirens or other high pitched noises then it will likely cause it to start howling in response. Boredom It could be that the Labrador is howling due to boredom. Labradors were bred to be a very active breed and it takes a lot to properly stimulate them. If your Labrador becomes overly anxious when you leave or at the sight of you preparing to leave then it could be a case of separation anxiety. Other cues could be that it becomes destructive when you are away, it could be depressed or it might pace up and down when it thinks that you could be leaving. Lots of exercise with the dog. Solve Howling Due To Sounds Figuring out whether or not sounds are causing the howling should be a bit easier since your Labrador will begin to howl at the start of the sound and then stop howling when it stops. If it is a frequent sound then getting it to stop could be a bit more tricky. Instead, you should consider a systematic desensitization and counterconditioning program that is designed to solve emotional related issues. Desensitization is where the Labrador is guided to become less sensitive to the sounds and to reduce its physical and emotional response. Counterconditioning is designed to make the Labrador change the way that it feels about the sound and to improve its feelings towards it. You can read more about these programs at pets. Solve Howling For Attention It could be the case that your Labrador does it because it knows that it will get more attention from you when it does it. Instead, it would help to give it attention throughout the day by training it, walking it and playing with it. But, it would help to stop rewarding it with attention when it starts howling. Reduce its Boredom Since Labradors can be active dogs it is important to make sure that yours is able to get the recommended amount of daily exercise. Generally, it is recommended for them to get at least an hour of exercise per day as healthy adults. You can start positive, reward-based training from day one, whether you get your Pug old or young. Exercise Pugs can be prone to gaining weight that can make breathing problems worse, so it is important to keep them active and avoid any weight gain. Your Pug will need up to an hour of exercise a day. This should include shorter walks, with extra playtime and lots of brain-stimulating activities. Several shorter walks throughout the day can help to stop them from becoming too tired or overheated, which is a great way to keep them active throughout the day. Keep a close eye on your Pug as they can tire easily due to their difficulties getting enough oxygen. As soon as you start to notice them struggling to breathe, stop and make sure they get enough of a rest. You will also need to avoid exercising them in the heat as this can cause even more problems since they can be at higher risk of heatstroke. Grooming Even though their coats are short, Pugs can still shed loads. Luckily, they tend to love being groomed as it means a lot of attention all on them. Pay close attention to the folds in their skin, as these are the perfect breeding ground for bacterial and fungal infections if left damp. You can teach your Pug from an early age to love tooth brushing and nail clipping so you can keep those pearly whites and paws in great condition. Pugs and children Pugs adore company and really love people of all ages. They often get on well with children, especially if the Pug loves to play.
