It is easy for Frenchies to accidentally overheat, which can quickly turn dangerous leading to serious complications such as heat exhaustion, heat stroke, and death if not immediately addressed. The signs of overheating can be subtle, too, making it especially important for you to stay vigilant in the hotter months. Moderate to severe stenotic nares. A hypoplastic trachea. An everted laryngeal saccules. These anatomical abnormalities make it more difficult for Brachycephalic dogs like the French Bulldog to breathe which can quickly become life-threatening. It is well known that dogs with BOAS are more likely to die during a flight and have been banned by many airlines. Is Boas hereditary in French Bulldogs? This is the reason it is extremely important to find a reputable Frenchie breeder. When it comes to French bulldogs and other dogs with short muzzles, breathing fast immediately triggers concern as it is a known health symptom. But sometimes breathing fast may simply be because your dog is getting hot or over-excited. Frenchies and canines in general will pant and breathe fast because that is a way to help their bodies cool down. Frenchies are also very capable of working themselves up to frenzy and thus have difficulty breathing. Something as simple as seeing your car drive in could get them over-excited and panting for breath. Other times, breathing fast could mean that your dog is anxious. French bulldogs love and crave your attention; hence they are prone to separation anxiety. So, if you leave your dog alone a lot and they see you leaving again, they could begin to get anxious and breathe fast. Many times, breathing fast in French bulldogs is because of their anatomy and facial structure. Their short cute faces mean that they have shorter respiratory passages and narrowed nostrils. This makes it harder for them to get enough air in with each breath. The French bulldog has short facial bones but with the same amount of facial tissue as a dog with normal facial bones. Sometimes, these tissues block the airways so completely that the dog needs to undergo surgery to be able to breathe. This breathing disorder is called Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Disorder. And as a result, the dog could suffer from breathing related issues like exercise intolerance, noisy breathing, snoring, and wheezing. If you suspect that your dog may have breathing problems, watch out for these signs and symptoms. As soon as you notice any of them, do not hesitate to contact your vet immediately. But if you hear noisy breathing that sounds like rasping, snoring or wheezing, your Frenchie may have a breathing problem. The noisier their breathing is, the worse their condition may be. Pay attention to your Frenchie dog during exercise: If your dog seems reluctant to exercise or lags behind on walks, you may want to check on their breathing. If you notice that your French Bulldog is panting heavily with their tongues sticking out, stop exercising for a bit. Their bodies will need more oxygen during exercise and they cannot supply it because drawing in air is laborious. Their gums and tongue may begin to have a blue, gray or purple color, this is due to low blood oxygen. Healthy mouth membranes should appear pink. You may also notice that your French bulldog is drooling. This is because they are concentrating really hard on breathing that they cannot afford to swallow. If your Frenchie has a breathing problem like BOAS, the symptoms become more pronounced and other signs of heatstroke may occur. These symptoms may include heavy panting, glazed eyes, increased pulse, vomiting, diarrhea, excessive thirst, excessive drooling, increased body temperature, staggering etc. Overheating or heatstroke can be life threatening, the Frenchie may have seizures, collapse, faint and in some cases, may die. If you notice your dog is overheating, take immediate action while contacting your vet for help. Move your Frenchie to a cool place, tepid sponge them to try and bring the temperature down faster or you can just soak them with water moderately as they can start to feel cold , provide a small amount of water they can drink to re-hydrate. Your vet will consider your dog's breed, physical examination and clinical signs. Visual inspection will be enough for your vet to diagnose Stenotic nares In order to diagnose an elongated soft palate, or everted laryngeal saccules your Frenchie will need to be under anesthesia. Several tests may be conducted to pinpoint any blockage or to determine if surgery is crucial. If your vet does not recommend the BOAS surgery or if your Frenchie is not eligible to get the surgery there are things you can do to help your Frenchie breathe better. Keep your Frenchie out of the heat: French bulldogs cannot stand the heat as they have trouble regulating their body temperature. So, go for walks in the morning and evening to avoid the heat of the day and always keep your Frenchie comfortable and in cool environment. Reduce excitement: If your French is over-excited, the best way to reduce it is to either model a calm behavior for him, that is, sit down, even your breathing and become calm. Your Frenchie will most likely follow suit. Or ignore him until he is calm, only go to him when has calmed down. If you do this repeatedly, he will eventually catch up. Do not over exercise: Too much exercise will cause breathing problems. Reduce your exercise to a short minute walk each day. Do not make your Frenchie exert himself. You can also use a dog carrier or a dog stroller. Avoid leaving your French bulldog alone for long periods of time: Separation anxiety could trigger a breathing attack in Frenchies. If you must leave, make sure you have a monitor that you can check how your French Bulldog is doing when you are not there. Also don't leave for a long periods of time. In the alternative you can get a dog sitter or another Frenchie so they can keep each other company. Speak to your vet about other options. Risks of Anesthesia in French Bulldogs Due to their compromised airways, brachys face a higher risk of complication due to anesthesia compared to dogs with normal facial physiology. The reason is the dog cannot get enough oxygen during the anesthetic and while trying to wake up from the procedure. Many vets feel jittery to perform surgeries on brachys due to the increased risk of something going wrong during and after the operation. If you own a brachy which needs surgery, make sure the veterinary doctor informs you of the risk involved in the procedure and take necessary precautions. How much does a BOAS surgery cost? Furthermore there may be other charges associated not mentioned above such as cardiovascular assessment and tests prior to the BOAS surgery which may result in additional costs. If you had the pet insurance well before your vets BOAS diagnosis or it is not within the exclusion section treatment should be covered by the pet insurance. If you have any doubt or question you should call your pet insurance and ask in advance. To avoid breeding French bulldogs that highly suffer from BOAS, Frenchie breeders should aim for moderate features like a longer muzzle instead of extremely short or flat. French Bulldogs with the BOAS diagnosis that are eligible for the surgery, should not be bred and removed from the breeding program. The breeder should examine neck girth, body condition, type, nares, genes and more when determining who is eligible to be bred. Regurgitation in French Bulldogs Gagging, vomiting or regurgitating in Frenchies or other brachycephalic breeds all describe their inability to digest food and water properly due to the shape of their head. This is one of the most common symptom of BOAS. The only way dogs release excess body heat is panting. However, brachycephalic dogs have a smaller mouth and inefficient airway, making it difficult for them to dissipate heat. This weakness makes them susceptible to heat stroke. It is important to know heat stroke can lead to death in brachys, which is why such dogs must never be allowed to become overweight. An overweight brachy dog has more fat that traps in heat, increasing the chances of heat stroke. Eye Challenges in French Bulldogs and other brachy dogs Due to the smushed face of brachy dogs, their eyes have limited socket space. Further, the overly exposed eyes of brachycephalic dogs make their eyes dry and irritated frequently. This is one of the reasons a collar is never recommended for daily walks and could potentially be dangerous especially if your Frenchie dog is a puller. If you own a French Bulldog chances are you dealt with eye ulcer at some point in their life. This is a very common injury since they don't have a nose to protect their eyes. The shape of the skull and nose of these dogs make it difficult for them to breathe effectively and dissipate heat. It might be cool and breezy outside, but make sure your brachy dog stays indoors as much as possible during the summer. Try to walk your Frenchie early in the morning, or later in the afternoon, to prevent them from overheating during the peak daytime hours. Never leave your Frenchie in a hot car Hot cars are death traps for French bulldogs. It is a fact that your car can rapidly climb to a whopping degrees in just a few minutes. Your Frenchie is not able to sweat; instead, they pant to cool down. You can buy a cooling mat at the store or online at relatively affordable prices. Alternatively, you can make a simple cooling mat by freezing water and wrapping the frozen water inside a heavy towel. Place the towel in the canine's bed but make sure it does not touch your dog's skin directly. The risk of BAOS increases sharply as relative muzzle length shortens and BOAS occurs in dogs whose muzzles comprise less than half their cranial lengths Packer et al .There are a number of congenital present from birth , anatomical abnormalities that form the basis of BAOS and which contribute to the breathing problems: Stenotic Nares abnormally narrow nostrils — This is usually a bilateral condition occurs in both nostrils , and when present, adds to the airway occlusion, increasing the inspiratory effort needed the effort needed to breathe in. It has been suggested that tracheal hypoplasia worsens the prognosis for dogs with BAOS Orsher , Monnet and causes chronic or recurrent lower airway and lung infections Harvey .This is a common cause of laryngeal collapse in brachycephalic breeds according to Venker-van Haagen , though other authors do not to discuss this condition as part of BAOS. Individual dogs with extreme brachycephaly conformation usually have some combination of the above defects Brown and Gregory and most have more than one defect Fasanella et al .These include: Collapse of the larynx - The increased negative pressure created in the pharyngolaryngeal throat region, as a result of the obstructions described above, ultimately results in distortion and collapse of the larynx Wykes .Three stages of laryngeal collapse have been described: In stage I laryngeal collapse, the laryngeal saccules small sac-like structures in the larynx balloon and turn inside out evert. This adds to the airway obstruction. In stage II there is loss of rigidity and medial displacement of the cuneiform processes of the arytenoid cartilage part of the cartilage that form the support structure of the larynx which collapse inwards, and in stage III there is collapse of the corniculate processes of the arytenoid cartilages - this involves further collapse of the laryngeal structures blocking the airway Pink et al .Bronchial collapse. Laryngeal collapse has been found to be significantly associated with bronchial collapse collapse of bronchi — branching airways in the lungs; De Lorenzi et al .Evertion and hypertrophy of the tonsils — Inflammation of the soft tissues in the throat area leads to the tonsils enlarging, adding to the amount of tissue protruding into the pharynx the back of the throat Fasanella et al .Hypertrophy of the pharyngeal muscles — The muscles in the throat become larger and thicker as they are constantly working harder to keep the pharynx open to enable the passage of air into the lungs. However, this hypertrophy of the muscles further narrows the pharyngeal cavity. Gastrointestinal problems: dysphagia, regurgitation, vomiting and acid reflux — Dysphagia is defined by Poncet et al as difficult or painful swallowing. They state that it can be associated with regurgitation bringing up contents of the oesophagus — often saliva in BAOS and vomiting bringing up stomach contents. Dysphagia in brachycephalic dogs has been reported by many authors eg Ducarouge , Dupre and Freiche , Koch and others .Poncet et al also noted many reports of anatomical defects in the gastrointestinal tract of brachycephalic dogs. For example, hiatus hernias where part of the stomach can pass up into the chest through a larger than normal hole in the diaphragm, and pyloric stenosis where the stomach exit is narrowed stopping food leaving the stomach normally. They found a correlation between the severities of BAOS and of the gastrointestinal disease. They postulated that the respiratory diseases affected the severity of gastrointestinal signs and vice versa. Heart Failure — This occurs secondarily to inadequate oxygenation of the blood in the lung, due to the constant airway obstructions. The body detects that the blood is inadequately oxygenated and narrows vasoconstricts the capillaries in parts of the lung that are poorly ventilated. Chronic long term vasoconstriction and increased blood pressure in the lungs increases the blood pressure in the right side of the heart and eventually can lead to right-sided heart failure Monnet .Breathing problems during whelping - Breathing difficulties may affect some brachycephalic bitches during whelping giving birth and may be a reason for elective or emergency caesarean section in these dogs Harvey .Thermoregulation — The normal nose plays an important role in body temperature regulation in the dog. Evaporation from the extensive folded surfaces over the complex mesh of turbinate bones, enables cooling. In brachycephalic dogs, this function is severely disrupted resulting in severe difficulties in coping with heat — whether due to the warmth of the environment or resulting from exercise. As Oechtering states: 'This is why brachycephalic animals are particularly heat-sensitive, why many pant to no avail even at room temperature and without physical effort, and may need several hours to recover even after brief exercise. The primary congenital abnormalities produce signs in puppyhood. The mean age for brachycephalic dogs being presented to vets for treatment of BAOS is 3 to 4 years of age Monnet .Laryngeal collapse is usually associated with older animals Harvey a. Signs in more severe cases include exercise intolerance inability to cope with exercise , mouth breathing, gagging, restlessness, rapid breathing tachypnoea , cyanosis blue coloured membranes of the mouth — due to lack of oxygen in the blood , dysphagia, abnormal posture, and intermittent collapse due to respiratory compromise Shell , Fasanella et al .Vomiting and regurgitation are also frequently seen. Dupre .Flatulence is common due to aerophagia swallowing air; Harvey .Respiratory crises commonly occur in moderate to severely affected individuals, in which the animals rapidly develop respiratory distress — struggling to breathe - and can collapse and die. With laboured breathing, over inflation of the chest is seen Dupre .Dogs with more severe BAOS live a precarious existence and minor aggravations can lead to severe respiratory distress and a crisis Hendricks .Stress, exercise, excitement, all act as aggravators Hendricks , Dupre .These dogs are very prone to heat stroke Hendricks .Hendricks examined sleep disorders in 20 English bulldogs. All dogs over 2 weeks of age exhibited sleep-disordered breathing including pauses in breathing and blood oxygen levels dropping below normal many times per hour. It is likely that this happens in French bulldogs as well. BAOS is a progressive disease. Some of the primary problems, such as stenotic nares and elongated soft palate can be helped with surgery. Surgical treatment is a major intervention but without treatment moderate to severely affected dogs will suffer progressive respiratory distress, incapacity and ultimately death. Some of the secondary problems can also be improved with surgery. However, the outlook for dogs with BAOS depends on which primary and secondary conditions they have at the time of treatment and how advanced they are. Overall prognosis for dogs that have had surgical interventions varies; Reicks et al , in a study of 62 cases in various brachycephalic breeds, reported a favourable outcome for all dogs needing surgery. The prognosis and complexity of the surgery needed also varies depending on the exact characteristics of the disease in each individual dog. Return to top 2. Intensity of welfare impact BAOS has a major welfare impact since it not only reduces general quality of life but puts affected dogs at risk of death through major respiratory distress. Without major surgical treatment these crises can reoccur. Disrupted sleep patterns because of brachycephalic respiratory compromise are probably common. The degree of problem depends on the number and severity of the anatomical abnormalities that are present in any individual dog. Nasopharyngeal turbinates are found in some brachycephalic breeds Ginn et al Laryngeal collapse is common in French bulldogs with BAOS. For small dogs such as French bulldogs to have laryngeal correction is more surgically challenging than in larger dogs Harvey d. Secondary problems are also common. The owners of over half of dogs diagnosed with BOAS at a referral centre stated that their dog did not have breathing problems Packer et al .This normalisation phenomenon may blind owners and veterinarians to the extent of the problem in affected animals and lead to under-reporting and under-diagnosis. Return to top 5. Diagnosis Vets will suspect the syndrome in any brachycephalic dog showing appropriate signs, because it is so common. Diagnosis of stenotic nares can be made on clinical examination, with a definitive diagnosis of elongated soft palate, tonsillar hypertrophy and laryngeal collapse being made on examination under anaesthetic. Diagnoses of tracheal hypoplasia, right sided heart failure and confirmation of elongated palate are made with radiography x-rays under anaesthesia and gastrointestinal complications are investigated and confirmed via endoscopy and biopsies, again under anaesthetic Monnet .Anaesthetics carry substantially increased risks during recovery for BAOS sufferers and most authors only recommend anaesthesia for diagnosis when corrective surgical treatment can also be carried out at the same time, under the same anaesthetic, so that these risks during recovery are reduced. Genetics Brachycephalic head shape has long been thought to be the result of an inherited defect Stockard .Recently the region of the canine genome associated with brachycephaly has been identified and 2 particular genes have been implicated. The exact gene or gene defects are currently unknown Bannasch et al .This inherited defect defines all brachycephalic breeds and without this defect these breeds would no longer exist in their current form. Return to top 7. How do you know if an animal is a carrier or likely to become affected? As the French bulldog breed is currently defined by its brachycephalic head shape — all French bulldogs are affected by the inherited defect which causes brachycephaly. Most brachycephalic animals have some degree of BAOS Brown and Gregory , so it is extremely difficult to identify a puppy that will be free of this condition. Anyone wishing to obtain a French bulldog should ensure that it and its sire and dam are free of signs of BAOS and that they have not had correction surgery for any of the primary or secondary conditions. Currently, identifying individuals that have had previous surgery is difficult because scars on the nostrils may not be easy to see and the other surgical scars are hidden inside the throat. A typical German Shepherd is up to 26 inches tall and weighs somewhere between 77 and 85 pounds. If possible, visit the litter at least three times before making a final decision, this will allow you to determine the personalities of each of those little fluff balls, and see which would best fit into your family. How old should a German Shepherd puppy be when you take it home? Any puppy should be at least 8 weeks old before being separated from their mother. By this timeline, their sensory organs will have also developed fully which will help you to spot any deformities or medical issues. Be wary of any breeder that will allow you to take your puppy home before 8 weeks old. How do you puppy proof for German Shepherds? German Shepherds are naturally active and tend to explore the world with their mouths, especially during their adolescent period. So, before you can bring your new puppy home, there are a few things you can do to puppy-proof your house: Get rid of any poisonous plants or put them out of reach of your new puppy. Cover electrical cords with cable wraps or PVC pipes. Buy a new laundry basket that has a lid, no holes, and is tall. Make sure both your kitchen and bathroom trash cans have lids. New German Shepherd puppy checklist and things to buy It is important that your new puppy feels welcomed into their new home. Some items are ok to be left with your puppy, and other items are more dangerous or will be destroyed. This checklist will help you to know what to buy when getting a puppy. New German Shepherd Puppy Checklist. Buy a German Shepherd puppy that should be at least 35 days-old or 40 days-old. Show Line German Shepherds have an angulated back that slopes from high to low as you go from shoulders to rear end, but the Working Line German Shepherds backs are less sloped as compared to Show Line German Shepherds. Color Though German Shepherds are found in many colors, but the most common colors are: Black and tan. Pure black. Pure white. As the puppy will grow, the tan or orangish color will grow upward from claws to body. Some White Line German Shepherds have wolfish gray color as well. As German Shepherd puppy grows its ears droop straight whereas ears of other breeds droop sideways. The distance or gap between the ears of Germans Shepherd is less as compared to other breeds. Exercise, Growth, and Joints Exercise Labradors not only love exercise, they need exercise. We all look forward to taking our puppy for a walk, however it is important not to over-exercise your puppy. In natural play, puppies will romp until they are tired and then stop to lay down for rest. When walking a puppy on a leash, they cannot stop when they normally would for rest. Too much exercise or walking can severely damage their bone and joint structures irreversibly. This should be taken seriously. THE RULE is: No more than 5 minutes of exercise for every month of age So that means, at 2 months old 8 weeks , your puppy only needs to exercise or walk for 10 minutes per day. At 3 months of age 15 minutes of exercise and so on. If you walk your puppy too far too soon, your puppy may develop hip and elbow dysplasia as they get older. Labradors have been known to develop dysplasia younger than other breeds of dogs. In many of these cases, it is often due to environmental factors such as over-exercise, running on hard or strenuous surfaces such as concrete or sand , continual jumping or agility work. Things to avoid with your puppy: No jumping in or out of car, especially larger cars. Lift the dog or use a ramp. No throwing balls or frisbee great distances for your puppy to chase. The sudden stopping and over reaching with the front legs is dangerous. No agility, jumping or flyball before years old Do not let other dogs knock or push the puppy over continually, includes body-slamming Avoid much stair climbing which can increase the risk of dysplasia No fast turns or roll-overs Good exercise: Swimming is great, since there is no weight-bearing impact on their joints. Remember, labradors love water! Walking on leash, for no longer than the recommended length of time for their age Self-directed play is an overriding rule for any puppy under 18 months old. The majority of exercise should be free play, exploring, and noodling around Hide and seek games are fantastic, as the dog can move at its own pace looking for its toy or treat or you. After sexual maturity, the growth plates calcify and the rapid cell division ends. The growth plates become a stable, inactive part of the bone, now known as an epiphyseal line. Dogs bones are held together with muscles, tendons and ligaments soft tissue. In an adult dog, if a joint experiences a stress such as bending the wrong way or rotating too much, the bones will hold firm and soft tissue will be pulled, resulting in a sprain or tear. Why this matters so much, is that unlike a sprain, injuries to the growth plate may not heal properly or not heal in time for the puppy to grow up straight and strong. Injury to a growth plate can result in a misshapen or shortened limb, which creates an incorrect angle to a joint resulting in yet more future injuries when he grows up, including dysplasia. These xray images show open and closed growth plates in a puppy and adult dog. Bone Strength In addition to having soft growth plates at the end of long bones, puppies bones in general are softer. Spiral fractures of the tibia lower leg bone are very common in puppies. A spiral fracture is where the bottom half of the bone twists in the opposite direction of the top half. Any exercise that puts torque twist on a bone puts the puppy at risk of a fracture. For an example, movements such as twisting and turning suddenly can cause these type of fractures. Hip and Elbow Dysplasia This is where we recommend you read our Health and Genetic Testing page, where we talk about hip and elbow dysplasia. It is critical that you, as a puppy owner, understand as much as you can about hip and elbow dysplasia, how you can help prevent it, and what your breeder should be testing for. On the other hand, an underfed or malnourished puppy or dog is also at higher risk of injury. Muscles mass directly influences strength, likewise inadequate calcium and nutrients affect bone density. Labradors have the capacity to build up incredible fitness that will see them on the go all day long, but for most, there is a limit on how much they can do. This can be made up of running, swimming, playing fetch , jogging alongside you…anything that goes beyond a gentle walk. But if the first consideration is your Labradors age, how much do puppies and the elderly need? Nice for long runs with your Lab. If you have older dogs or children, the puppy may well try to keep up with them and over-exert themselves, playing to exhaustion and damage their developing joints. So keep an eye on them and interrupt play if need be, to give them plenty of rest. Once they are fully grown, they can go out for much longer. The 5 minute rule should be sufficient to keep your lab puppy fit, burn off excess energy yet not over-exert them and cause possible developmental issues. Some labs may need to slow down from the 7th year onwards, while others remain extremely active beyond their 10th year. As Labradors get older, many develop arthritis, dysplasia and other health issues that can prevent a Labrador from enjoying or needing exercise as much as they used to when young and healthy. They will likely still try to chase a tennis ball all day and hike mountains just to please you, even if it may be doing them more harm than good. Try not to put them in this position. As your Labrador ages, you need to be more observant , looking for changes in their movement, excessive panting, slowing down, feeling tired.
