The breed is gaining wide popularity in Australia and North America due to their sweet, affectionate nature. As with any hybrid breed, their appearance will vary depending on the characteristics of the breeding pair. They have broad, round skulls, long muzzles, and oval-shaped eyes that are most often brown but more rarely can be blue or green. Their bodies are long, muscular, and well-built. Their coats vary widely and can be flat and straight like the Retriever, wavy, or even very curly like the Poodle. As a Poodle mix, they are considered hypoallergenic and could be a good choice for those who suffer from allergies. Goldendoodles are affectionate, attentive, and good with other dogs and children, making them an ideal addition to your family. In fact, they want to be with you at all times. They are happy, active and energetic. They will thrive with families who are committed to being active, walking daily, playing fetch and flyball, and even swimming. Their intelligence makes the courses. Their coats require regular brushing and trimming to prevent mats. Goldendoodles adapt well to both rural and urban environments provided that exercise is prioritized and they have enough room to run and play. Please be patient. We get hundreds of applications and can't respond to everyone. Your donations pay for expenses to foster doodles, buy pet food, cover veterinary costs, and transportation. We adopt doodles to families that will keep them as inside pets and treat them as family members. We do not adopt to families who are specifically looking for a doodle to train as a service dog. Since the majority of rescue dogs do not meet service dog requirements, this is an unfair expectation of our doodles. We also do not adopt doodles to be given as gifts. We do not permit commercial transport of our dogs, and all adopters are required to personally take their new family member home. If you adopt a doodle from us, it is important to note that rescue dogs typically require leash and other training. Your doodle may keep you up nights, have potty accidents, and other inconveniences for the first couple of weeks. We can't possibly know everything about the health or behavior of any dog in our care. You bear the responsibility of choosing to adopt your dog. If for any reason you are unable to keep your doodle, you are required to contact the California Doodle Rescue. If you are found to be a possible match for one of our doodles, you will be contacted directly by someone from California Doodle Rescue. If contacted, please be prepared for a required phone interview, contacting your references, and or veterinarian checks. Part of our adoption process requires an in-person meet and greet between the doodle and the entire household, including pets of the potential adopting family. If a home visit is not possible, you may be asked to send photos of your home and yard. Why Adopt Goldendoodles? Abandoned, stray, or neglected dogs that ended in shelters are a growing problem. Typically, you need to put in an application to take a rescue Goldendoodle home. Goldendoodle rescues or shelters are non-profit organizations filled with Goldendoodles looking to be rehomed. Top Goldendoodle Rescues For Adoption The following is a comprehensive list of Goldendoodle rescues where you can potentially find Goldendoodles looking to be adopted. From mini Goldendoodles and Goldendoodle puppies to retired Goldendoodles and Teddy Bear Goldendoodle, these are the top places to get your hands on one of the most popular hybrid breeds today. Vocality level 2 in 5 Disclaimer: While the characteristics mentioned here may frequently represent this breed, dogs are individuals whose personalities and appearances will vary. Please consult the adoption organization for details on a specific pet. Temperament As a crossbreed, it is hard to say for sure which behavioral and personality traits each Doodle will possess. Overall, pet parents report that Goldendoodles are friendly family dogs who do well with children and other pets. Good puppy socialization is key to their development as a well-rounded adult dog. They have an average to high energy level and require roughly minutes of exercise daily. Due to their loyal, people-pleasing nature, Goldendoodles can be easy to train, and if done properly with positive reinforcement, can be extremely obedient pets. They prefer room to run around, so would thrive with a fenced yard. They may not be the greatest choice for apartment dwellers, unless you are big on daily outdoor exercise. Upkeep With an average-to-high energy level, Goldendoodles do best with more active families who can dedicate time to playing games with them. They thrive on socialization and playtime with other dogs to help to burn their energy. Mental stimulation in the form of agility or ongoing training will help keep their adventurous spirit content. If not properly occupied, they can sometimes become destructive -- another reason why they might not be the best match for a small apartment. Goldendoodles have a double coated fur that can be quite dense. Some have fur that can be left in its natural state but you should still expect to brush it out roughly once per week. Others may have fur that will require more upkeep, including professional grooming every weeks the more dense the fur, the more it will trap dirt. Otherwise, bathe your Goldendoodle as needed, brush teeth regularly, and trim nails times per month. Be sure to check and clean their ears to remove any buildup and avoid infections! The mix of the two did not appear in America until the s, but has been gaining popularity as people value a type of dog that could possess the low dander levels of a Poodle and the intelligence and happy personality of a Golden Retriever. The Goldendoodle was originally offered as a larger alternative to the Cockapoo, one of the early intentional crossbreeds. Because Goldendoodles are so popular, they certainly can be found for adoption in animal shelters and Doodle-specific rescues. If sharing your home with a Doodle is your dream, be sure to consider adoption! Related Content.

Black Black and tan Once the breed becomes standardized, these coat colors may become official. But, for now, the goal is to create the blue version as much as possible. Blue Bay Shepherd Temperament Though Vicki was aiming for the lupin look with these dogs, she will sacrifice the look for the temperament. Her primary goal was to create a family pet though getting them to look like wolves was a close second. Regardless, she succeeded at both. Blue Bay Shepherds have a sweet, loving temperament without the aggression and aloofness of their wolf ancestors. But the dogs naturally tend to be sociable, gentle, affectionate, and playful. You can even trust them around livestock and other animals! Can you trust this dog that looks so much like a wolf with other pets? Owners report that their Blue Bay pups have done well with other dogs and cats. They should be properly socialized and raising them with other pets is best. However, this is common amongst dogs in general — not just ones that look like wolves. Their sweet, affectionate nature makes the Blue Bay Shepherd a great family pet. But they will do best in a specific type of home. They also tend to be huge. So a home with a large yard and lots of space to run is an ideal place for them. Are you looking for a simple way to keep track of your dog's daily activity? It has never been easier to monitor your dog with the Fi smart collar. With this slender, smart collar, you can count your pup's steps and set daily, weekly, and monthly goals. You can keep an eye on Fido's fitness routine with it, almost like a FitBit for your dog. Blue Bays can also be prone to separation anxiety, so an active family that will be spending lots of time with the pup is best. Homes with small children may not be the best choice for them purely because of their size. They are gentle, but they are still big and energetic which means they can accidentally harm tiny family members. Wondering if your home would be a good fit? The best way to find out is to ask Vicki herself. However, because the breed is so new, there are no established health patterns and no way to know if there are common problems. Dogs with wolf blood in general tend to be healthy and have a long life expectancy. However, counter this with the tiny gene pool. All Blue Bays come from the same place and the breeders at Southern Breeze Ranch have to be cautious to avoid inbreeding and the problems this can cause. Vicki specifically used the old-style German Shepherds to avoid the modern GSDs' sloped back and the hip dysplasia that commonly comes with it. Plus, the Shepherds she used may still pass down issues like epilepsy, degenerative myelopathy, pituitary dwarfism, and eye abnormalities. To help prevent this, avoid feeding within 30 minutes of exercise — either before or after. You may also consider using a slow feeder bowl if your dog tends to eat too fast. And wolf dogs are exactly the same. A Blue Bay Shepherd requires daily brushing during the worst seasons to keep this shedding under control. The rest of the year, you can get away with brushing them times a week. Regular brushing will also help keep their long hair free of tangles and give it that shine that makes them so beautiful. Regardless, brushing your dog is a great way to bond with him and helps him to feel safe and loved in your home. Since they are so active, Blue Bay Shepherds will generally wear down their own nails running around on hard ground. If not, you should have clippers on hand to keep them from overgrowing. Note that ear infections are common in German Shepherds. Since there are so few and the breed is still in development, there is commonly a one or two-year waiting list for these pups. The pups can also be quite pricey, though less than you might expect from an exclusive breeder. This innovative collar offers real-time GPS tracking, ensuring that you can easily locate your furry companion whenever needed. She wants to create and maintain a standard with her new breed and well as make improvements with each new generation. If you become the lucky owner of one of these pups, you will join a new adventure that is more than just getting a new dog. Plus, you will be the lucky recipient of more love and loyalty than you might have bargained for! The link has been copied! You might also like. As this is still a breed-in-progress, it is difficult to say definitively that there is no aggression at all in the Blue Bay. After all, an individual in any breed can develop aggression under the right circumstances. Any dog, but particularly a large and powerful one like the Blue Bay Shepherd, needs to be socialized and trained from a young age. Pro-social interaction from a young age can avoid all kinds of trouble later on. Nevertheless, there is no evidence of aggressive behavior in American Blue Bay Shepherd at the time of writing. And, Southern Breeze Ranch appears to be breeding specifically for non-aggressive behavior. They may have a strong prey drive, however, and so this should be watched for. They are devoted animals and should preferably not be left alone for long periods, as they may be prone to separation anxiety. Because of their size, a home without small children may be preferable. However, Vicki Spencer seems to place her dogs in the homes best suited to them, and contacting her might help you decide if there is a Blue Bay for you. Sometimes breeders impersonating Vicki will offer dogs for much less, but it is important to remember that there is currently only one breeder in the world. Also, be sure to check your state and local county laws regarding wolfdogs, as they may be prohibited. They are devoted family members and seem mostly without the behavior problems that are often associated with wolfdogs. As this breed develops further, it is clear they are something worth keeping an eye on. Not many people have, but Ocean, a rare 6-month-old blue wolf dog, has been making waves on social media for her unique appearance in recent weeks, with over , followers on Instagram. Ocean is 30 percent timber wolf, also known as a gray wolf. These animals inhabit Alaska, northern Michigan, northern Wisconsin, western Montana, northern Idaho, northeast Oregon and the Yellowstone area of Wyoming. She is also a mix of German shepherd, Alaskan malamute and Siberian husky, and her unusual breed as well as her distinctive coloring have intrigued people on Instagram. Wolf dogs typically weigh between 70 and pounds. Wolves weighing up to pounds or more have been found in the wild, but these are "very few and far between and are considered an abnormal occurrence," according to Wolf Paws, a Tennessee sanctuary for abandoned wolf dogs. Anneka Svenska's 6-month-old wolf dog, Ocean, is 30 percent timber wolf. Wolves have long been depicted as scary animals in films and fairy tales, giving them an undeserved reputation not unlike sharks and snakes. Despite Ocean's wolflike appearance, "people flock around her wherever we go," Svenska said. I haven't met one person who is scared of her yet. It's incredible how interested people are in her. Our Instagram page has grown to over , followers in just three months. She's so sweet and cuddly. Very sensitive and clingy. Very trainable. Courtesy of Anneka Svenska In the U. But depending on the percentage of wolf DNA in the animal, it could be classified as a hybrid and subject to regulations under the Endangered Species Act of .Some states have laws regarding wolf dogs, while others—Hawaii, Connecticut, New York, Louisiana, Wyoming and Illinois—have banned the breed altogether. She is not a direct cross with a wolf. In the U. To reduce the number of these animals entering shelters or being abandoned, prospective owners should do sufficient research to determine whether they are up to the challenge of owning a wolf dog. Colorado-based wolf dog enthusiast Phillip Young previously told Newsweek, "I wish that people knew these are not a dog for the normal household. You don't change their lifestyle to fit yours, but you have to change yours to fit them. One commenter said, "If I saw Ocean coming, I would not think 'eeek it's a wolf' it'd be more like 'it's soooo fluffeeee, can I hug it. She looks more like a wolf than a wolf dog. Bloat is a prevalent risk among large dogs, and it happens when the dog crams down too much food in a short time. To avoid that, split their food into two meals a day. They also carry wolf, husky, malamute, and other wolfdog DNA, which gives them adequate genetic diversity and fewer health issues. Nevertheless, the following six diseases are prevalent among wolfdogs and German Shepherds. Although Blue Bay Shepherds are supposed to have fewer hip joint issues than German Shepherds, you cannot ignore the risk. So far, no Blue Bay Shepherd has come forward with this disease. The dog would feel reluctant to do physical activities due to the pain, which would advance into lameness and loss of functionality. Bloat Bloat and gastric torsion are prevalent dangers among large dog breeds. Voracious eating habits and strenuous activity after a meal can cause this condition. Feed your dog multiple times a day instead of all at once. Also, keep a half-hour gap between meals and playtime. Epilepsy German Shepherds have reported more cases of epilepsy than any other dog breed. Although the genetic diversity in these dogs is much higher, we cannot rule out genetic issues like epilepsy completely. Pituitary dwarfism Pituitary dwarfism occurs due to a growth hormone deficiency and is prevalent among German Shepherd dogs. Pituitary dwarfism causes disproportionate physical features and growth issues. Degenerative myelopathy Canine degenerative myelopathy causes the dog to lose functionality in its hind limbs due to nerve degeneration in its spine. Old German Shepherds sometimes have this disease. Their actual life expectancy should be around or above 12 years, considering these dogs are healthier than their parent breeds. However, with the limited information we have so far, all these figures are rough estimates. Blue Bay Shepherd breeder So far, there is only one authentic breeder that produces these dogs. All other Blue Shepherd breeders are only producing blue-colored wolfdogs. Nevertheless, you can look for blue shepherds from local kennels and dog breeders like shiphrashepherds. Alternatively, you may contact Southern Breeze Ranch and ask if they can deliver a pup to Ontario. Many places advertise Blue Bay German Shepherd puppies for sale. But those are not genuine. She believes every dog is different and catered for a specific owner. A prominent feature on that channel is a giant Blue Bay Shepherd by the name of Kurgan. The owner claims that this dog was already 33 inches tall on its first birthday. Is the Blue Bay Shepherd right for me? The Blue Bay Shepherd is a gentle giant who makes a loving companion. This dog breed is also healthier and more active than many purebred dogs. Fans of rare dogs often rush into the latest dog fad without proper research. Yes, Blue Bay Shepherds are part wolf. I thought it would be a great idea to share my experience with all pet owners so they can also keep their canine companions healthy, happy, and clean! Crossbreeding canines to create new sub-breeds and variants is not a new idea. It should never be done willy-nilly, however, and is best done very carefully and selectively over the years by dedicated breeders with the knowledge and ethics to create a healthy, happy dog. Vicki Spencer is still actively trying to breed them towards an even more wolf-like appearance. Luckily, you have us to help you decide if this brand-new hybrid breed is a good match for your home. It will be many years, if not decades,- before it gets an official breed status. Remember, you should never choose a companion animal for looks alone. You must educate yourself on the breed and its quirks and ensure that you have the right family dynamic, lifestyle, and home for the dog. Only a few people currently own blue Bays, and their owners do love them. Most of these dogs average around 30 inches tall at the shoulder, with females leaning smaller and some males taller. The temperament of a dog is just as important as its looks. The Blue Bay is bred to be an excellent family dog with a stable temperament. Here are its key characteristics: Couch potatoes, but with a lot of energy to burn. They may get destructive if under-exercised Sweet and affectionate Non-aggressive to livestock and small animals Not timid around people As trainable as a standard German Shepherd Clever Powerful chewers Remember that every dog has a unique personality. To be happy, healthy, and stable in temperament, dogs need to be well raised, socialized and trained. Just like any other dog, Blue Bays need intensive care and love from their humans. Any dog can be aggressive if raised that way or if its natural need for mental stimulation is ignored, and the smarter the breed, the more stimulation they need. This is a very high-energy breed, despite the sweet temperament, so plan to spend a good few hours a day exercising the dog. Remember that these costs cover the care, attention, and careful breeding dedicated to the new line by the current breeder. Also, remember that there is only one Blue Bay breeder. If you see any listed somewhere else, or people claim to have Blue Bays that are not from Vicki Spencer, it will be a scam, so proceed accordingly. The Spencer-bred Blue Bays all have a registration certificate and a unique number. This is, quite literally, a rare breed. So rare that you can only get it from one breeder, Vicki Spencer. The breeding stock for this dog is incredibly rare, too. Blue German Shepherds are not unknown but are definitely not common or easy to find. The same goes for blue wolfdog hybrids. Surprisingly, Vicki struggled to find the right Shepherd more than the right wolfdog, which she had previous experience with breeding and handling. When she encountered a beautiful and intact blue wolf-dog hybrid, she set out to find the perfect partner for them. The original Blue Bay stock was bred from a litter she was offered, but the need to bring in new genes and keep the temperament balance she wants makes this a very long-term and careful project. The first Blue Bay Shepherd litter was born in .The parents were a French-bred Blue German Shepherd and her existing blue wolf-dog stock. Again, you can look at the older Labradoodle hybrid breed for more about this phenomenon. However, the very first official Blue Bays were 5 generations away from the pure wolf line. Once Blue Bays can be bred exclusively to other Blue Bays, this will reduce with time. You also see it on the Russian Blue cat. All large-breed dogs with deep chests are also at risk of bloating. Avoiding strenuous activity for 2 hours after eating will prevent bloat issues. It is important to stress that this is a very new breed. This lack of fixed literature on the topic must always be kept in mind when discussing the Blue Bay. Remember that you need to budget for regular vet checks at important milestones, their annual shots, and have good pet insurance or personal funds to provide veterinary care as needed. You should never buy a dog of any breed on a whim, but instead, make sure you have the money and time to devote to making a happy, healthy hound. Diet and Food Costs A great diet is critical for the health and well-being of this unusual breed. They typically need at least 5 cups of food daily, and it should be a well-balanced, high-quality brand with premium ingredients. Keep in mind that some Blue Bays are prone to sensitive stomachs. Some owners prefer other feeding regimes, such as raw feeding. Grooming Costs While the Blue Bay Shepherd coat is designed to look a little wild and rugged, it will still need careful care to keep it clean and mat-free, and to remove loose hairs. They may also need their ears and eyes cleaned on a regular basis. Still, the years of loyalty and love will be worth it for the right dog. The first German Shepherds used to start the breeding program were specifically chosen for their loving personality and gentile, calm nature. Breeders purposefully chose German Shepherd dogs that were not known for their guarding ability. Guarding is sometimes thought to be linked with aggression, and this is being purposefully bred out. The blue German Shepherds used also were American Kennel Club certified and determined to not have any of the genetic health issues that plague many German Shepherds today. By selecting these dogs, the Blue Bay Shepherd could be a sweeter, more wolf-like, healthier shepherd dog. She lives currently on the Southern Breeze Ranch where she has been working for the past 20 years on the development of this breed. Vicki had always envisioned a shepherd dog with a blue fur coat, a loving, gentle personality and excellent health. However, she was unhappy with the current personality, color, and health issues present in the standard German Shepherd. She set to solve these problems by creating a new breed. Vicki began creating her ideal dog using wolf-dogs and blue German Shepherds. The ultimate goal for Vicki is to have the Blue Bay breed registered with the American Kennel Club and be officially recognized. Technically they are not currently an official breed. This is because each dog is a unique mix of other officially recognized breeds and wolf-dogs. It is thought that she is on the 5th generation of breeding stock. All that is known is that the first few generations were wolf-dogs and blue German Shepherds. They are still officially in their development phase. As of , an F2 Blue Bay has not been bred. This means she has not yet mated two Blue Bay Shepherds together. She is still currently crossing Blue Bays with other breeds. Are They Purebred? A purebred dog is a dog whose parents are both the same breed. All of the current Blue Bay Shepherds are technically mixed breeds, they are not purebred. The original mix was a blue German Shepherd and a wolf-dog hybrid. The original studbooks for German Shepherds included cross breeding to wolves. The breeding program will continue to mix other breeds into the gene pool until the appearance, temperament, and personality meet the original goals. Not being a purebred dog is not a bad thing! Blue Bay Shepherds have an extremely diverse genetic background because they are a mix. This means they are much less prone to the genetic diseases that are common in the purebred German Shepherd population in the US. The founder specifically chooses dogs for their excellent genetic background. Blue Bay Shepherds are specifically mixed with wolf-dogs that are part eastern timber wolf Canine lupis lycaon. The eastern timber wolf was chosen because of its blue coat that does not fade with age. They tend to become even more wolf-like as they age. This is due to the eastern timber wolf that is in their bloodline. Eastern timber wolves tend to be blue when they are young. Their blue color seems to last years on average. At around eight years of age, they start to gain more silver and white in their coat. Purebred blue German Shepherds can change from blue to a silvery gray within their first few years. It is less deep blue and more of an ashy bluish gray. They also have stunning eyes that are completely distinctive to the breed; they are always pale, ranging from green to hazel. Their general appearance from a distance is very wolf like. The original goal was to create a dog that looks like a wolf. Blue Bay Shepherds are particularly wolf-like in their appearance. Some of the early generations are almost indistinguishable from a wolf. All Blue Bays have three things they all seem to have in common: Very light-colored eyes. Signature blue fur coat. Wolf like appearance with a mane of fur around their face. Blue Bay Shepherds are known for their show stopping eyes. Their eye color can range from a pale green to hazel or even a pale blue. They are very different from the dark brown eyes of a typical German Shepherd. Their blue coat is also a dazzling ashy blue-gray. This is different from the many blue colors of German Shepherd. Their fur can also become ashier and more silver with time making them appear even more wolf like. They have a bushy mane framing their face and naturally pointy, upright ears. Blue Bay Shepherds are also a very large breed. Females run from 70 to 85 pounds and males are on average 85 to pounds. Some of the first generation mixes are over pounds! Some small german shepherds have been known to weigh just 50 pounds. Temperament and Personality Blue Bay Shepherds were bred specifically to be family dogs. Currently they are not used for any specific purpose other than to snuggle and love on their owners. Despite their wolf lineage, their personalities are surprisingly very sweet and cuddly. Vicki wanted the breed to be family pets with very gentle temperaments. Above all else Blue Bay Shepherds are specifically bred for their temperament. All of the dogs that are part of the breeding program are very calm and sweet dogs that love people. This is even true for the wolf-dog hybrids that were used in the original lineage. They can be friendly and get along great with strangers. However, they must be socialized properly. Dogs in general should be socialized as soon as they are fully vaccinated. Due to the fact that Blue Bay Shepherds are part wolf, this socialization stage is critical. Socializing a Blue Bay puppy will ensure that all of the sweet loving traits typical of their breed will be fully present. These traits should not be shadowed by fear of the unknown. In general, the ideal owner of a Blue Bay Shepherd is one that will spend a lot of time with them and expose them to other dogs and small children early. Leaving this breed alone for long periods of time can cause aggressive undesirable behaviors, especially when they are young. Being shepherd dogs , they do require an active lifestyle and lots of attention. Some owners report that they can become destructive in their yards when left alone. This is most likely due to boredom and an inability to redirect their energy towards something more productive. The typical owner of a Blue Bay Shepherd is extremely active and loves to play. Blue Bay Shepherds love to go for long hikes and have lots of space to run and play. The more wolf a dog has, the more timid and potentially aggressive they can be towards strangers. Larger males can grow to over pounds. Females run smaller at between 70 to 85 pounds. Their size, combined with their wolf-like appearance, can be frightening to strangers. This means that they require proper training and an owner that can control them in any given situation. Each puppy comes with a certificate that is signed by the breeder for authenticity. The breed will remain in its developmental stage for several more years. They are known to love people, despite having wolf in their blood. They are not bred to be farm dogs, like the original German Shepherds, but they are part German Shepherd. This means they love to run around and be outdoors. If they are not allowed enough time to exercise, they have been known to be destructive. Unsocialized Dogs Can Be Aggressive These dogs must be appropriately socialized, or they can become aggressive. Most of them love people, especially their families. However, they are very impressionable by negative experiences. Some have been reported to be dog and stranger-aggressive. They Shed! Blue Bays have an undercoat and will shed throughout the year, just like German Shepherds. But, their shedding is more moderate than the average German Shepherd, this may be due to the mixing with the wolf-dogs. German Shepherds were originally bred as sheep herding dogs for farmers in Germany. They were designed to be a working dog. Today, the German Shepherd is not always used for sheep herding, but it is still a working dog. It can be used for police, military, and service work. Blue Bay Shepherds are bred to be family dogs, not for work. Since the German Shepherd was not bred with personality in mind, they can be timid towards strangers and occasionally aggressive. This is not known amongst Blue Bay Shepherds. Although, both dogs are known to be destructive when not exercised. The blue German Shepherd has become very rare. This is partially due to its unpopularity, but also those that are born blue tend to become a silver-gray color with age. Blue Bay Shepherds are part blue but are much more of an ashy-blue. This makes them very different in appearance than a typical shepherd. Finally, the price of these two puppies is different. It is also easy to find rescues that work specifically with German Shepherds, if you are interested in adopting an adult. It is not possible to adopt a rescue. Blue Bay Shepherd.

Upcoming Litters What customers say about our puppies "Dedicated to a fault is only one way I would describe her, there are so many positives.Dedication, patience, and caring are truly not strong enough words. Audrey and I discussed her breeding line and I was most impressed! She took the time to explain her dog's lines, what some of them had gone on to do : police, detection, protections, pets - it was impressive. I was beyond happy that Audrey not only had the experience, but also had the educational degrees to back up what she was saying. I did not meet Audrey when this litter was born but instead there were a few male puppies available black and sable but none had been actually chosen yet. Audrey put me down for a sable male per my request. I knew I would not see whatever puppy was to be mine except through videos, pictures, etc….She would send videos, pictures, and just general updates. Audrey was always available and responded quickly to any correspondence. I sometimes wondered when she slept with all these clients and pups. Dedicated to a fault is only one way I would describe her, there are so many positives. One day Audrey sent a particular video and I fell in love. It is the fairest way to allow clients to choose. Audrey and I continued to correspond sometimes daily and she was amazing. A day or so later, Audrey let me know that this little guy was mine. I believe that Audrey does everything within her power to ensure that clients do receive the puppy they want if the fit is correct. Now, we had to transport this little man. Audrey and I communicated a lot! I had never had a puppy brought to my door physically unseen. This was completely new to me yet, I know dogs are flown all over the world. Together, Audrey and I navigated this last leg of the journey and I could not have asked for more from her. Dedication, patience, and caring are truly not strong enough words to use when describing how Audrey was during this process. Audrey ended up keeping my pup who was named Malachi for an extra week. While he was there, she taught him his name and sent pictures and videos often. They certainly made my day! Since Malachi has arrived home, he is nothing short of amazing! He is exactly as Audrey described him and the litter Daisy x Maverick focused, well behaved, eager to learn, and dark stunning sable! Exactly what a great breeder should do. My experience with North Mountain Kennels was wonderful. If you are looking for a well bred high quality working German Shepherd l highly recommend North Mountain Kennels. Audrey is in a class all of her own and I am grateful that the stars aligned so that I was able to be blessed with one of her pups. He is a true gift and I look forward to all the days ahead with him. Thank you Audrey! Currently Available Puppies.

We may earn money or products from the companies mentioned in this post. It is, therefore, no surprise that some breeders are starting to mix the two. Considering whether a German Shepherd Lab Mix is right for you? Read on for everything you need to know about this amazing mixed-breed dog. Lab German Shepherd Mix Overview Size — 22 to 25 inches tall and 50 to 80 pounds Coat — Medium length, double coat, color varies Shedding — Yes Temperament — Intelligent, active, and loyal, but can be wary of strangers Trainable — Highly, but prone to destructive behavior when bored Activity — Highly active needs two hours of activity per day Best For — Families and people with active lifestyles and lots of time to spend with them What is a German Shepherd Lab Mix? As these dogs are roughly the same size, the mother can be of either breed as long as she is larger than the father, to ensure against any difficulty in the birthing process. Sheprador Appearance As is the case for most mix-breed dogs, it is a bit of a gamble what you will get when these two come together. They might have the pointed ears of a German Shepherd or the floppy ears of a Labrador. There is nothing to do but wait and see. But luckily, both German Shepherds and Labradors are attractive dogs, so however they turn out they should be handsome. That said, we can make a few generalizations about the appearance of Shepradors. Size As both German Shepherds and Labradors are medium- to large-sized dogs, you can expect their mixed offspring to be the same. German Shepherds are the larger of the two and are usually between 50 and 90 pounds and 22 to 26 inches tall. Labradors are only a little bit smaller, at 50 to 80 pounds and 22 to 25 inches tall. So expect your German Shepherd Lab Mix to stand between 22 and 25 inches tall and weigh 50 to 80 pounds. You can narrow this range down a bit by looking at the size of the parents. Color The color of these gorgeous mixed-breed dogs is also highly variable, and you might end up with a pooch of a solid coat color, like Labs, or striking mixed coloring, like German Shepherds. A lot of this depends on the color of the Labrador parent, whether they are yellow, black, or chocolate. As a general rule, the darker the lab parent, the darker the coat of the pup. But you also get white German Shepherd Dogs, which can result in striking white Shepradors. Coat When it comes to coat length, you should expect in most cases that your Lab German Shepherd Mix will have a shorter coat, like that of a Labrador. This seems to be a dominant gene, and the vast majority of German Shepherd Lab Mixes end up with this type of coat. The dog will certainly have a double coat, as this is a feature of both breeds. The undercoat will be soft and fluffy, and the guard coat rough. This does mean that they shed—a lot. This is not the type of dog to have at home if anyone in the household suffers from allergies. Shepherd Lab Mix Puppy Lab German Shepherd Mix Character While temperament is again unpredictable with mix-breeds, both German Shepherds and Labradors are intelligent, active, and loyal dogs, so you can expect their offspring to share these traits. German Shepherds are very intelligent and have a natural protective instinct. They have a tendency to guard whatever they consider to be theirs. Labradors were originally bred as gun dogs, to retrieve the wild game of hunters. As such, they are very obedient and tend to be pleasers, and they like nothing more than spending time with their humans. As both breeds are intelligent and highly trainable, you can expect these characteristics to appear in a Sheprador. However, whether they will be a guard dog that can be aggressive with strangers, or a pleaser that is great with children, you will have to wait and see. While dogs are a mix of nature and nurture, if you want to take a Lab German Shepherd mix into a family home, or if you are a first-time dog owner, you will want to be careful about which individual dog you choose. Activity Levels However their personality turns out, you are going to have a dog with a lot of energy. These larger dogs that are used to working need around two hours of exercise each day. Their intelligence also means they get bored easily, and when they do get bored, they can have a tendency toward destructive behavior, which means digging and chewing. They do best with active owners with whom they can go walking, hiking, and running. Whether these dogs will like swimming is a coin toss. While Labradors love the water, German Shepherds are a bit more wary. But their size and adventurous nature mean they can be trained to love the water. So you have a good chance that your Lab German Shepherd Mix will be a swimmer. These dogs are loyal and love being around their humans. You will find them at their happiest and healthiest when you make them part of the family and shower them with love. Exercise Ideally, your Sheprador will need around two hours of exercise per day. This might be more than just a long walk, as their high energy levels mean they will like to run as well. They will enjoy tackling tough trails with you at their side, and the retriever nature of Labradors also means this breed is likely to enjoy a good game of fetch. Bear in mind that these dogs will need this level of exercise rain or shine, or they will become frustrated and start engaging in destructive behavior. This is not only bad for them in general, but can put excess pressure on their hips, which are also prone to issues. Intellectual Stimulation German Shepherd Lab Mix dogs are invariably highly intelligent, which makes them easy to train but also means they get bored very easily. When they do get bored, they are smart enough to find trouble, and you may come home to quite the scene. These dogs need to spend time with people to occupy their minds, and they also benefit from intellectually stimulating games. But expect them to make short work of these challenges, as they are chewers. You will be getting them new games quite often. Companionship Labradors need a lot of companionship, and this is a trait their offspring with German Shepherds are likely to share. Not only will they get bored and start acting up, but they can become depressed. Grooming Both German Shepherds and Labradors are shedders, so you can be sure their Sheprador offspring will be as well. This is just a fact of life with Shepradors. They will need to be brushed at least twice a week, and as often as once a day during the shedding seasons fall and spring. As well as brushing, invest in a good quality vacuum cleaner that has special functionality to help you pick up dog hair. These dogs are also likely to enjoy jumping up on the couch for a snuggle and a snooze. Invest in coverings and be sure your swanky vacuum cleaner has an attachment for upholstery. Their coat is not the only part of their grooming to attend to. You need to clean their teeth three times a week, with a brush or with dental treats. Finally, trim their nails every three months. This is both for their health and the health of your home, as their nails can damage your floors. For a big dog like this, it can be a good idea to take them to the vet to get their nails clipped. But if you feel confident to do this at home, check out our list of the best nail clippers. Diet German Shepherd Lab Mixes are big dogs that have lots of energy, but they also have a tendency toward obesity, which means they have to get their energy from good sources. This means high-quality protein and fats over carbohydrates. Preferably this means meals made from quality meats rather than meals or byproducts. When looking at the ingredient list, look for named meats at the first ingredient. Lab German Shepherd Mixes also benefit from novel proteins in their diet, as they can be prone to allergies. Dogs tend to develop allergies to the meats they eat the most, which often means beef and chicken. When they are puppies, Shepradors should be fed three times a day, and this should be cut down to two times a day from about four months of age. As a rule, dogs need 25 to 30 calories per pound of their weight per day, though you should watch their individual weight and energy level to see if you need to adjust their meals up or down. You can also check the label on your dog food to get a rough estimate of how much you should be feeding your Sheprador. Of course the amount will also vary depending on how often you exercise your dog. Known Health Problems While there is no limit to the number of health problems that a dog of any breed can develop, or they might not develop any at all, some dog breeds are more prone to some conditions than others. German Shepherd Lab Mix dogs have the potential to develop the health problems that are common in goth German Shepherds and Labradors. These include: Hip and Elbow Dysplasia — This is a condition where the hip and elbow joints do not develop normally and that can cause extreme pain and arthritis in later life. For more information check out our list of Glucosamine for Dogs. Progressive Retinal Atrophy — This is a group of degenerative diseases that affect the eyes and can lead to blindness. Shepradors are also prone to eat whatever is put in front of them, so you need to be conscious of what you are feeding them. Gastric Dilatation Volvulus — Poor diet can lead the stomach to dilate and expand, in turn leading to a twisting of the stomach that is life-threatening. It can block the flow of blood to the abdomen, leading to rupture of the stomach walls, and put pressure on the diaphragm thereby inhibiting the lungs. Degenerative Radiculomyelopathy — This is a condition that affects the spinal cord and leads to progressive weakness of the hind limbs, and eventually paralysis. Panosteitis — This is an inflammation of the outer surface of the long bones in the legs, resulting in a shifting lameness and making bones more susceptible to breaks. Allergies — Dogs can be born with allergies or develop them over time. Dogs often develop allergies if they eat the same foods consistently. Underactive Thyroid — The thyroid manages hormones, and an underactive thyroid is unable to secrete the required hormones. This can result in weight gain, lethargy, and cold intolerance. At this time, their energy levels will drop and they will need some changes in their diet and exercise. GSD Lab Mix Puppy But no matter how well trained they are, if they are left to get bored for too long, they can engage in some pretty destructive behavior, such as digging and chewing everything in sight. You have been forewarned. The highly assertive nature of German Shepherds means they do not respond well to domination training. They are likely to revolt when subjected to punishment. The best way to train a Labrador German Shepherd Mix is through positive reinforcement. Labradors are pleasers that love to make their humans happy. This means their offspring are also likely to feel the same way. So they will respond rapidly to training based on rewards for positive behavior. Deal with this behavior early, with specific training for dealing with children and strangers. They are very active and need lots of attention, so they need to be in households that support this. But they do great with adults and kids, so they can be a great family pet. Remember that German Shepherd Labrador Mixes need around two hours of exercise every day, so they need someone who can commit to that level of activity. But at the same time, it means they are the type of dog you can take on all of your adventures if you like hiking and trailing. They also need attention and stimulation throughout the day. If anyone in the house suffers with pet hair allergies, this is another reason Labrador German Shepherd Mixes are not the right dog for you, as they shed a lot. Consider something like a Labradoodle or Goldendoodle instead. Also, ask for medical records of the parents, to see what health conditions the pup might be prone to in the future. If you decide to adopt a mature dog, spend a bit of time with them to see what their temperament is like. History of the Breeds German Shepherd German Shepherds originated in Germany in the late 19th century as a sheep herding dog. But, because they are very intelligent, trainable, obedient, and strong, they have since moved into many different working roles including police, military, search and rescue, and disability assistance. German Shepherds can have a reputation for being aggressive, but they are more alert and wary than aggressive. They can have a tendency to become overprotective of family and territory. But if socialized and trained properly, this tendency should be highly manageable. German Shepherds are the second-most popular dog in the United States and the seventh-most popular dog in the United Kingdom. Labrador Labradors, also known as Labrador Retrievers, were initially used in Newfoundland as fishing dogs to retrieve fish that had gotten away. Because they are incredibly friendly but also intelligent and therefore easy to train, today Labradors are favored as disability assistance dogs, often helping individuals with blindness, ptsd, mobility issues and autism. Labradors are the most popular dog breed in the United States. They are intelligent and therefore easy to train, and loving and loyal, so they will quickly feel like part of the family. However, they do need a lot of exercise and attention, so adopting a Sheprador into your family is a commitment. German Shepherds have a reputation for being aggressive, but it is not really deserved. They are natural watchdogs and reserved around strangers, but they are not aggressive dogs that are likely to attack. They are also intelligent and easy to train, which means easy to control. Beagles, Poodles, Boxers, Golden Retrievers and Spaniels are all extremely friendly dogs as well, many specifically bred to be companions. They do best with active people or families who are full of people to love them. Like all dogs, they will do their best when they are cared for properly. This means training them appropriately, exercising them, keeping them mentally stimulated, and feeding them well. But these loyal pooches will repay your care and commitment with a lot of love and affection. Helps ease anxiety in their new home. We love using Bully Sticks to help divert these unwanted behaviors. Well, you get the German Shepherd Lab mix, a lovable crossbreed with all the great personality traits you could ever want in a family dog. Also known as Lab Shepherd mixes or Shepradors, these mixed breed canines are highly sought after. The parent breeds are some of the most popular dog breeds in the world. Like all crossbreeds, Shepradors combine the physical and personality traits of their parents, resulting in a one-of-a-kind companion. Because they are a designer dog , there are no established breeding guidelines or standards. Oftentimes, pedigree information is scarce as well, creating a lot of unknowns. Canines are fully capable of crossbreeding on their own. In fact, many of the purebred dogs we know today are a result of centuries of careful breeding. As we mentioned earlier, this crossbreed is a direct result of breeding purebred German Shepherds with Labrador Retrievers. Labrador Retrievers have a very long history that dates back all the way to the s. Back then, they were working dogs that often helped out fishermen. Eventually, these dogs made their way to England where they became companions for European royalty. German Shepherds were working dogs, too. However, their main job was to herd sheep and other livestock for farmers. Today, Labradors and German Shepherds are very popular the world over. .Though, they are popular for very different reasons. Typically, Labs are known for their companionship. They make great family pets and are often used as guide dogs for those with disabilities. Meanwhile, German Shepherds are revered for their athleticism and intelligence. German Shepherd Lab Mix Temperament The beauty of mixed breed dogs is that they take on traits from both of their parents. German Shepradors are a perfect example of this. These dogs are a joy to be around. Whether that required physical work or simply good behavior, these pups are up for the task! Like all dogs, German Shepherds and their subsequent crossbreed are products of their environment. Shepradors make great family dogs. The combination of intelligent thinking and loyalty can prove to be useful in a home setting. Your watchdog will do all they can to protect your home while still being down for cuddles. However, helping your pup grow up to be obedient and well-behaved is manageable. You see, these dogs are very intelligent. In fact, some might say that they are too intelligent for their own good. This mainly comes from the German Shepherd side of the dog. German Shepherds are notorious for being stubborn. Shepradors can take on that personality trait, making the training process a bit more challenging. They may require more time and patience to truly understand things. Another issue you might encounter with German Shepherd mixes is the need for regular mental stimulation. Because they are so intelligent, you must constantly challenge their minds to keep them happy. Like all dogs, Shepradors do best when positive reinforcement is the training method of choice. While dominance-based training used to be the go-to, several studies have shown that punishments do more harm than good. German Shepherd mixes thrive when you use a reward system. Showering your dog with praise and providing plenty of treats is the best way to instill the training techniques. Despite all of this, you may see pups with vastly different characteristics. Genetics is not an exact science. Dominant genes from one parent dog may take over, causing the puppy to look more like one breed than the other. As a result, the crossbreed is going to fall into that same category. You can use information about their parents for reference, but several factors will contribute to their true adult size. Generally, males can weigh upwards of 88 pounds when fully grown. They will stand between 22 and 26 inches at the withers. This is the point between the shoulder blades of the dog. Females are typically smaller than males. You may come across females as small as 35 pounds. Though, most will be around 70 to 80 pounds. As for height, females tend to be between 20 and 24 inches at the withers. Both of the parent breeds are pretty athletic, so most mixed pups will be as well. They fall somewhere in the middle. Depending on their activity levels, you might notice strong muscle development on their hind legs. These dogs usually have wide snouts and dark noses. Their eyes are large and brown. Some pups may have light eyes, but this is quite rare. Genetic variations in the parent breeds can lead to lighter eyes, but a vast majority are going to have big brown eyes. One characteristic where you will see a lot of variation among these dogs is the ears. Most Labs have large ears that flop down over the sides of the head Meanwhile, perky triangular ears are one of the most defining traits of the German Shepherds. The interesting thing about the ears is that you will have to wait and see whether they stand tall or flop down. Puppies are born with soft and fluffy ears. As they grow older, the cartilage in their ears may or may not strengthen to help them stand up. Some pups even have a combination of the two ear styles! Colors Coat colors can vary across the board with these pups. German Shepherds have an iconic tri-color coat. Distinct patterns of gold, black, and white cover the body. The most common is gold. However, black and pure-white Labs exist as well. They may have multi-colored coats or solid ones. Lifespan The average lifespan for a German Shepherd Lab mix is between 10 and 12 years. This falls in line with the life expectancy of the parent breeds. Generally, larger dogs tend to have a shorter lifespan than smaller ones. Many factors will affect how much time these dogs have. Health issues and a poor lifestyle can cut that lifespan short. On the same token, extremely healthy pups are fully capable of living past 12 years of age. Possible Health Issues Like all dogs, Shepradors are not immune to disease and health problems. In fact, they may be susceptible to more issues. The problem with mixing breeds is that it opens up the possibilities of health complications in the future. Hereditary problems from both parents can be passed to the puppy. Unfortunately, German Shepherds and Labrador Retrievers are known to suffer from a few different ailments. Here are the most common health concerns to be wary of. Dysplasia is a musculoskeletal condition that often affects dogs later in life. However, it takes years to develop and can be triggered by issues as a young pup. Take hip dysplasia for example. Hip dysplasia can cause debilitating pain. Many dogs who suffer from it have a hard time standing up. They may exhibit signs of extreme weakness in the hind legs, resulting in a noticeably different posture. The hip sockets become malformed, causing mobility issues with the hip joint. While some dogs are born with it, poor development as a puppy can exacerbate the problem. There are treatment options for hip and elbow dysplasia. Veterinarians can perform surgery early on to correct the problem and provide relief. If your dog is already suffering from it, physical therapy and joint supplements can provide relief from pain. Bloat Contrary to popular belief, bloat is not an innocent gas problem with dogs. It occurs when dogs eat too fast or exert physical exercise too soon after eating. Excess air is swallowed, filling the stomach. Eventually, the stomach can twist on itself. This restricts blood flow throughout the body. Provide small meals and prevent your dog from playing for at least 30 minutes. To control fast eating, you can utilize slow-feeding bowls or puzzle toys. They create an obstacle that forces the dog to eat slower than normal, which can do a lot to prevent GDV. Ocular Issues Eye diseases, such as progressive retinal atrophy, are pretty common with both parent breeds. The tissue within the eye can degenerate over time. This causes vision loss. From there, you can provide supplements or foods rich in beta carotene to slow its progression. Diet and Exercise Requirements Shepherd Labrador mixes are incredibly active dogs. They love nothing more than playing and getting tons of exercise. To make matters worse, a lack of exercise can turn into a lasting problem. You need to start your pup on the right foot and establish a healthy lifestyle right off the bat. Go for runs and toss chew toys around the yard. You can break up exercise time in manageable chunks throughout the day to make things easier. As long as you get those 90 minutes in, your dog should have no problem staying healthy. When it comes to diet, you must be just as vigilant! These dogs have insatiable appetites. However, you need to ensure that their food is meeting all of their nutritional needs. It should use wholesome proteins like chicken, beef, or fish. The dog food should also have complex carbs and healthy fats like fish oil. Steer clear of anything that has artificial ingredients or unnecessary fillers. Those foods will do more harm than good. The goal is to provide your dog with muscle-building protein that will keep their body in good shape. As a good rule of thumb, dogs will need about 30 calories of food for each pound of body weight. This usually amounts to about 4 cups of dry kibble a day. That said, foods can vary dramatically when it comes to nutritional density. We recommend splitting their caloric requirements into two small meals a day. One meal in the morning and one in the evening will keep their energy levels stable as they go about their active lifestyles. Plus, splitting the meals will help to avoid issues like bloat. However, thick coats need a bit of extra work. GSDs have double costs. The outer layer of hair is thinner and easier to manage. Meanwhile, the inner coat is thick and dense. It provides insulation in those cold winter months. German Shepherd Lab mixes can inherit that thick coat. They will go through shedding cycles a couple of times a year, resulting in a mess of fur throughout your home! With regular brushings, you can keep the fallout to manageable levels while keeping your pup clean. These pups make great family dogs. They get along just fine with kids as long as you socialize them early on. As always, you should never leave your dog alone with young kids. These crossbred dogs are fully capable of attacking people, so you should exercise caution and always keep a watchful eye. They should know not to pull their tail or agitate the dog in any way. Are German Shepherd Lab mixes good guard dogs? Shepradors make great guard dogs. Plus, they tend to be a bit suspicious of strangers. Are these dogs aggressive? This all depends on their upbringing. If you take the time to properly train and socialize these dogs, they will be gentle and loving. However, if the dogs are abused or trained with punishment, they could exhibit aggressive behavior. How big to German Shepherd Lab mixes get? Males can weigh as much as 88 pounds and grow to 26 inches tall at the withers. Do Shepradors get along with other dogs? German Shepherd Labrador mixes do just fine with other dogs. However, they must be properly socialized first. Exposure to other animals is key during their development. They should be introduced to new family dogs slowly to prevent any aggressive behavior. Do Shepradors make good working dogs? Thanks to their intelligence and high trainability, Labrashepherds make fine working dogs. They do particularly well herding livestock. Conclusion German Shepherd Lab mixes are a joy to raise. If you have an active lifestyle to keep them fit, they will be a great addition to your family. Treat them well and these pups will spend their lives being a loving canine companion. Also, consider talking to everyone at home regarding your rules and commands to reinforce consistency in training your dog. Start inside a quiet room with only you and him. You can train him outdoors once he is less distracted to noise and the presence of other pets and people. You may also opt for professional training for your Lab German Shepherd mix dog if you want your pup to grow up and become a service dog or police dog. German Shepherd Lab Mix and Families Lab German Shepherds can be great family dogs because these dogs love to be with their masters and to please them every way they can. These are patient with children and will never roughhouse or bite. They can even tolerate toddlers and very intense games like dress up and role play games. Lab German Shepherd mix dogs will love to be with other pets and even other dogs. They are not domineering and will never cause a fight. The Lab German Shepherd mix may become anti-social and may become aggressive with people or other dogs when they are not introduced to people and other pets early on. Your dog should be trained first and exposed to other dogs and people to prevent this untoward behavior. German Shepherd Lab mix puppies German Shepherd Lab mix dogs are a combination of energetic friendliness and natural protection. As well trained adults they have the potential to make great herding, hunting, retrieving, therapy, service or pet dogs. German Shepherd Lab mixes are affectionate with their family, but need plenty of exercise, shed heavily, and can be destructive if left alone for long periods. That is, they have one parent of each pedigree. So there is huge variation in how they look, and no standard appearance. Some have the telltale muzzle and tall ears of the German Shepherd, others more resemble a Labrador. The color of their coat will depend on the coloring of their parents. For example, a black Lab German Shepherd mix is likely to have a dark coat, and a German Shepherd yellow Lab mix is likely to have a mid-toned coat. There are even arresting-looking white German Shepherd Lab crosses. An ultra-warm undercoat and a coarse outer coat to protect them from the elements as they work outdoors. This is because the gene for long coats is recessive and very unusual among Labs. Gathering up their lost hair will be a never-ending task! A good vacuum cleaner is essential. This might be reason enough to choose a different crossbreed if you have a busy family or someone with allergies in the home. German Shepherds are large dogs. They stand 22 — 26 inches tall at their shoulder blades, and weigh 49 — 88 pounds. Meanwhile, Labs are a medium sized breed, 22 — 25 inches tall at their shoulders, and 55 — 80 pounds on the scales. A Labrador German shepherd mix could be as petite as their smallest parent or as big as their largest parent. Your German Shepherd Lab mix could weigh anything from 55 pounds to 80 pounds. As usual, the lower end of the range is typically made up of female dogs, and the top end is dominated by the boys. They love to interact with people, show their affection, and get on well with children. Also, the German Shepherd is confident, courageous and smart. They are loyal and full of life. Furthermore, Labradors and German Shepherds are both fast learners and eager to please. German Shepherds in particular need productive ways to channel their intelligence, or they will get into mischief to stave off boredom. Your German Shepherd Lab mix could inherit any combination of the traits of their parents, which is why meeting both parents before committing to bringing home a puppy is so important. Socialization Socialization is the process of making a dog comfortable with other animals, people, places and activities. Even for breeds that are known to be friendly and easy-going, like Labradors, socialization is very important. German Shepherd Lab mixes are likely to inherit a love of people and company from both sides of their family tree. But socializing them properly as puppies will be vital to give them the confidence they need in meeting new people. German Shepherds, despite their great loyalty to their family, can be wary of strangers. So thorough socialization from puppyhood is essential, even for a mix. For instance, Socialization can involve having new people call over to the house regularly so your pup gets used to new faces and voices. It can also involve introducing your puppy to new dogs, cats, children and other animals so that they do not become fearful or territorial. A young dog in good health could require even more. They will also need human company for much of the day, and training to keep those big brains from getting bored. They are working dogs at heart. Highly motivated to learn and impress you with their ability to follow instructions. Like with any dog, training them is an ongoing commitment that lasts a lifetime. But with your ultra smart dog it should be a satisfying and rewarding one. German Shepherd and Labrador Health Magnification of health problems in pedigree dog breeds has become a well-documented problem. Labrador Health One of the biggest health problems facing Labradors today is hip and elbow dysplasia — looseness in the joints that eventually leads to painful arthritis. Another is progressive retinal atrophy, a gradual failure of the retina at the back of their eyes that can ultimately leave them blind. Also, Labs are also notoriously greedy, and prone to obesity if their penchant for snacking is indulged too often. Another less serious but common issue in Labs is ear infections. These are easily treated but may require veterinary care and frequent inspections. In addition, they are more than usually prone to: Gastrointestinal diseases. Shedding is a must in German shepherd lab mix puppies so brushing is extremely important during the shed season. You may also bathe them once in 2 months keeping in mind the weather condition in your hometown. Cutting nails can be good but you can choose to trim them as it would not be a good idea to cut nails thoroughly. These include the type of food that your dog is used to eating, the ingredients in the food, and the size of the dog. German Shepherds are bred as working dogs, so they are typically used to eating food that is high in protein and low in carbs so does labrador. A diet that is high in protein and low in carbs is a good fit for a German Shepherd lab mix as well. One thing to keep in mind is the size of the food. The German Shepherd lab mix is a large dog, so a diet that is too small or too heavy might not work for them. Small meals can make your dog lazy and heavy meals can lead to bloating. A balanced diet is a key to keeping your dog happy and healthy. You can also make proportions of a heavy meal that can be given multiple times a day. Experts consider feeding your dog a fresh meal is way healthier than giving them a processed meal. If you are still confused then you can consult your vet because he will prescribe food according to the size and health of your dog. Fun Facts: This dog is extremely energetic and active. He will not let you rest once you start playing with them. If he takes after the Labrador side, he will chew everything that comes his way So better keep your favorite stuff hidden from him. Constant dominance-based training does not work with GSD lab mix dogs. While training them you must think out of the box and present some creative methods of training. This dog can be your best guard dog, the reason is that both the parents are excellent guard dogs and loyal to their homes. In the United States, Labrador is the number one favorite and famous dog while the German shepherd is the second number. Breeders decided to take advantage of it and crossed these two breeds. Both German Shepherd and Labrador shed heavily due to their double coat, Therefore their pup will also have heavy shedding during the season. However, there are some things that should be considered before getting one. Knowledge is power and it will be a good time for you to get the best dog to have the best time in life. The German shepherd lab mix is the ultimate family dog, so before adopting one, make sure you have time to spend with this energetic breed. Because Labrador loves to be around its human, so does its mixed puppy. They will be at their best if you keep them happy by showing love and affection and keeping close. They might go bananas if you do not spend enough time with them, and they may also show destructive behavior such as starting to dig or chewing things around. This can also increase anxiety levels and make your dog depressed. They love kids and are great companions. They are good with other pets in the house if you introduce them in the right way. Keep other pets away from this dog. If you see their aggressive behavior, They might not like them sometimes. They get bored too easily due to which they need constant mental stimulation. Keeping the German shepherd lab mix clean, and timely walks and activities can improve the overall health of the dog. Brush them often as their shedding is high. German Shepherd Lab Mix Exercise: As mentioned above this breed is restless and super active for which it is important to keep this dog tired. Exercising this dog is one of the vital factors. The German Shepherd is a super active dog with full energy. On the other hand, Labrador is also an energetic dog so we can predict their mixed pup will also have these traits. Regular walks to the park are essential. They can be your great companions for hiking, swimming or running. Most people are confused if a German Shepherd Labrador mix can swim? Of course, they can swim because of their Labrador lineage. There is one thing that you should keep in mind that you have to train them for swimming and introduce them to pools. Because they are easily bored, try to play different games. Games that have purpose and are effective for physical and mental stimulation. Before adopting a dog, always make sure you are doing justice to them in terms of weather. There are some dogs who are a good fit for summer and who do well in winter but if we talk about German shepherds and Labradors they both are not good for hot weather. As a matter of fact, they both love winter. You may notice German shepherds are super happy during the winter season and lazy during hot weather. The same goes for Labrador. German Shepherd Lab Mix is a double-coat dog who would love to open up during cold times of the year. They are extra playful and joyful under the snow. New owners have this confusion they might feel cold in the snow while in reality, it is the opposite, They enjoy the snow more than humans. This time is the best time when you can play with your dog and train different activities. They may also show you a high energy level and excitement while training and exercising. As we all know positive energy emits positivity, you will also feel fresh and energetic if you spend some playtime with your German Shepherd lab mix. Did you know they may get heat stroke if they are kept outside during the daytime in hot weather? There are cases where the owner kept the German Shepherd outside during hot weather and the heat results in heart failure in the dog. There are extreme cases as well. This is because the German Shepherd is a large dog with a double coat and cannot tolerate heat for a long time, and so does the German Shepherd lab mix. If you are in a country where the temperature goes high then better not to adopt a dog who has a double coat. Also, if there is mild Summer Heat in your hometown, You may take care of a German Shepherd lab mix pup by providing them with enough water all the time so they can stay hydrated. Do not leave them outside and keep them under the shade. This way you can protect your mixed breed from many problems caused by heat. Siren is just 11 months old and he is a super strong dog. Because Jessica knew he was going to be a big dog, she knew she needed a little help training Siren. Siren is 85 pounds in this picture. So, what problems did Jessica need help with? Jessica just needed to learn how to handle him around other dogs, because he got excited when they would go for walks. She was nervous about him becoming aggressive around other dogs. I see this a lot with new dog owners. Sometimes when a dog gets excited when they see other dogs, most people think their dog is aggressive. As long as your dog is not trying to kill another dog with deep growling and barking and lunging out at the end of the leash, baring its teeth trying to bite anything that moves. I find most of the time they just want to play. This was not how Siren was acting. He just started to pull on a leash when he saw another dog and wanted to play with other dogs. Jessica needed to learn how to stay calm and not get nervous. When a dog is being walked by its owner, and the owners get all tense up and nervous, your dog will sense that you are feeling this way, and more likely to get into conflict. You must remain calm when you are walking your dog. As a German Shepherd dog trainer, I see this behavior all the time. This behavior is so misunderstood in the dog training world today. Now, that Jessica had four weeks of group class training with other German Shepherds, she has learned how to stay calm without getting tense up and nervous. She got the confidence training she needed to have no worries anymore with her dog. When it comes to choosing a German Shepherd mix breed, Here are some popular questions you should ask yourself, that can help you make a better decision. What are you looking for out of a dog? Do you want a long-haired dog or a dog that does not shed at all? Do you have a lot of time to spend with a large dog? Do you already have a pet? Will, my dog get along with others? He is just 8 months old with his owner. Mark has been training with me for six weeks. Jackson was a rescue. Jackson was scared of everything in sight. When you rescue a dog, most rescues do not know where the dogs came from. Most of the time they were in the backyard and then they snuck outside the fence and become wandering the streets looking for food and water. Jackson was picked up on the streets of Miami Florida. My good friend Mark spends a lot of his time working with rescue adoption centers , to help place dogs in good homes. I will have more information coming soon. If you decide to rescue a German Shepherd mix. You always try to get as much information as possible about the dog, before you make your final decision. Remember, most rescues dogs or someone who is giving up their dog, will have some type of behavior problems with the dog. Example: The first thing Mark needed to learn, was how to teach Jackson to get over being scared of everything that was going on around him. This comes with confidence-building and socializing him with other dogs and people, and car, noise, bikes, etc. Jackson is going for long walks downtown around all types of distractions. Generally, the best ways to treat underlying conditions and change the diet or lifestyle are to encourage muscle development. If your dog is truly too skinny, you can help them gain a bit of weight relatively easily, but if you have a naturally petite dog, you make your pup overweight by altering it. Of course, there will be variance in size, but on average, you can expect your male dog to be between 20 and 28 pounds, while a female is usually a bit lighter at 17 to 26 pounds. Is Being Underweight Always Bad? Sometimes, you have a particularly tiny dog for the breed. It is probably fine if your dog is proportionately small, though your vet will confirm this. How to Know if My Bulldog is too Skinny: One of the easiest ways to tell if your Frenchie is too skinny is to look at their body type. Look down on your pup from above. Do you see their ribs protruding? Visible ribs are a telltale sign of being underweight. Is your dog slowing down due to a lack of energy? Is your dog not toileting enough? These are signs that there may be a problem that you will need to address. If your dog is too skinny, it is probably a cause. You could cause skinniness, or it could be caused by a medical condition that will need treatment. Thankfully, most causes can be treated. Not Eating Enough: The classic reason for being underweight is not feeding your dog enough. Or, your pup may not be eating enough for some reason, such as pain or a medical condition, even if you are providing the right amount of food. Feeding the Wrong Food: The food you feed may be inappropriate. If you feed something your dog is intolerant to, you can cause all sorts of issues. Worms or Other Parasites: Worms or other parasites can also cause weight loss and an inability to put any weight on. However, not all parasite areas are visible. A vet should be able to diagnose parasites if they are present. Other Medical Conditions: Other medical conditions can lead to weight loss and being underweight. Cancer, kidney problems, heart disease, allergies, and even anxiety may also cause problems with weight loss or putting weight on for your pup. If you notice these signs, you probably should reach out to the vet for a thorough evaluation. Are They Eating Regularly? Irregular eating habits or suddenly changing habits usually shows that there is a problem. Too much water could imply diabetes, while not enough could be related to kidney issues. Problems with drinking can become quite serious if left unchecked. Are There Toilet Issues? Going too much and having runny stools implies that their stomach cannot handle the food consumed. You may even notice worms in the stool. How is Their Energy? You should not hesitate to go to the vet if you notice that your pup struggles to find the energy for normal daily habits. Are There Any Other Concerns? Suppose you want to fatten up your Frenchie. In that case, you have three primary options: You can put on fat and build muscle, or you can treat an underlying condition or cause that is causing weight loss in the first place. How you do each is a bit different. However, both options will increase calorie content, so fat or muscle can be developed. Building Muscle: Building muscle is done just like it is in people. And, by exercising, you encourage the muscles to develop as well. While it might seem counterintuitive to exercise to help add weight, Frenchies are meant to be stocky and muscular. Gaining Fat: If your dog is truly underweight or too skinny, you may need to up the fat content on its body. Gaining fat is as simple as upping calories. Stick to high-quality foods with high-quality ingredients. Ideally, all dogs would be fed a raw, whole food diet, but this is expensive and time-consuming. If you are feeding kibble, make sure that you pick those that have real meat as the primary ingredients and avoid filler ingredients. Treat Underlying Conditions: Finally, if you want your dog to gain weight, you must ensure no underlying causes to keep weight off. Ensure your dog gets a clean bill of health, and putting on weight should be as simple as upping food intake and adding extra calories. Before you head off to start fattening up your dog, there are a few more things to consider. Adults require food twice daily, once in the morning and once in the evening. Puppies under the age of 8 months generally eat as much as six times daily. Your Frenchie should be eating between 25 and 35 calories per pound of body weight per day to stay healthy. It could be that your dog is naturally petite or is naturally larger than average. Frenchies are small dogs, so even a few pounds of weight change can make a big difference. At the end of the day, a healthy weight will help your pup live a happier, longer life and is worth the effort. This is because they are descendants of the Molossus dog, which were muscular as well. You also want to ensure their food is high protein, as this will help nourish and build healthy muscle. If they need some extra weight, you can feed them a little extra until they are at their ideal weight. Otherwise, they will get obese, and French Bulldogs cannot handle extra weight very well. French Bulldogs are dogs that will eat the food that is laid out for them. They will eat, even to the point of getting sick, as they like their food. You also want to avoid feeding them food with any unnecessary grains. Furthermore, you want to avoid foods with corn and soy ingredients, as most dogs end up being allergic to these foods. Feed Your French Bulldog Occasional, High Protein Treats Rather than feeding your Frenchie store bought treats, you can try feeding them some high protein treats that you make at home. French Bulldogs are able to eat eggs, which are low in calories and high in protein and other great nutrients. You can also let them have some plain yogurt as a little treat. You can even opt for some plain, cooked chicken without any bones in it as a treat. Most dry dog foods will have recommendations on their packaging that advise how much of that particular food you should feed your dog based on their age and current weight. It might also advise how much to feed them to help them gain or lose weight. The typical healthy weight range for a male French Bulldog is between 20 and 28 pounds, while for a female, the range is between 16 and 24 pounds. It can be a little difficult to keep your French Bulldog active, but it cannot be stressed enough how important it is to keep up a consistent effort to do so. For starters, they should be going for walks every day. Similarly, your Frenchie may not be a big fan of rain or snow. If you can find them sweaters or boots, and be sure to pack water on a hot day, it may help them get used to walking in inclement weather. If you are able to break up their walking time into a few shorter walks every day, that would be best. Furthermore, it allows you to bond with your Frenchie. Consider toys like rope toys that you can encourage your Frenchie to pull on and wrestle around with. Throwing balls around, even balls that have little holes for treats, will have them running around your home excitedly, which will be good enough exercise to help them gain muscle. It could also be nice to even let them out in the yard and have a couple of outdoor toys to play with so they can be active outside without having to go on a walk all the time. The only reason you should be trying to bulk up your Frenchie is to ensure they are as healthy and happy as possible. Thus, trying to push them to bulk up more and more will be unhealthy. If you are able to see your French Bulldogs ribs when you look at their midsection, you will know they are underweight. Recap How to Bulk up French your Bulldog is a fairly easy process, but you must respect that their genetics and their naturally small stature will only let them bulk up so much. Ensuring they get exercise and fun play time and a healthy diet is always the best course of action to support a long and healthy life for your Frenchie. Recent Posts. Avoid feeding your French bulldog too many high-calorie treats. If your French bulldog is overweight, gradually reduce their calorie intake until they reach a healthy weight. Encourage your French bulldog to play and run around as much as possible. How to make sure your French bulldog is getting enough protein The first step to making your French bulldog muscular is ensuring that he or she is getting enough protein in their diet. You can give your Frenchie a high-quality protein source like meat, eggs, or fish, or you can give them a high-quality protein supplement. The second step to making your French bulldog muscular is to make sure they are getting enough exercise. French bulldogs need around minutes of exercise per day in order to stay healthy and maintain their muscle mass. You can give your Frenchie a variety of exercises to keep them healthy and muscular, such as playing fetch, going for walks, or playing in the yard. If you follow these two simple steps, your French bulldog will be on their way to becoming a muscular powerhouse! Keep in mind that you should never just change their diet or increase the portion before you consult a vet. Their diet should include meat sources such as chicken, turkey, beef, rabbits, duck, or lamb. You should also add vegetables to every meal to help them stay healthy such as add peas, carrots, and green beans. If your Frenchie has a sensitive stomach, you need to get them something that will not upset their stomach. You can learn more about my recommended foods for Frenchies with Sensitive stomachs in this guide , but here is a quick recommendation that will be good with most Frenchies. There is also a wet formula that is done especially for dogs who like to eat food with a soft texture. Check Latest Price More Exercise You may think that getting too much exercise is the only way that exercise could be making your Frenchie too skinny , but getting too little exercise can also, surprisingly, cause your Frenchie to be quite skinny. If your French Bulldog is not getting enough exercise, then this could be one of the reasons why they are too skinny. Exercise will help your dog build muscle mass and also help to boost its metabolism. Start making a schedule for their walks and playtime, and try to stick to this schedule as much as possible. You can involve them in activities and exercises such as swimming and running. You can also try some weight exercises such as weight vest exercises or weight dragging and pulling exercises. Find the Underlying Cause If you cannot find a reason why your French Bulldog is too skinny, then it is best to take them to the vet to perform some tests and determine if there is an underlying health condition that is causing your dog to be too skinny. Here are some of the conditions that can cause your dog to lose weight: Cancer. Exercises such as this one can also help tire a high-energy French Bulldog. If you are using strength and muscle training on your French Bulldog, you must consult with a veterinarian first. If your French Bulldog is older, injured, or out of shape, it might be necessary to begin a muscle-building program for them. In the event of muscle loss, your French Bulldog loses strength, its immune system is weakened, and its recovery time from illness or injury is slowed. An older Frenchie, an injured Frenchie, or a Frenchie who is sedentary is more likely to experience muscle loss. How to make your French Bulldog gain muscle? Exercise to build muscle in dogs Make sure you start slowly and gradually increase the resistance and volume while exercising your dog. The best way to avoid injury is to follow this advice. Exercise should also be enjoyable for your French Bulldog. Before starting these exercises, a warmup should be performed with your French Bulldog. During a warmup, you might walk slowly for five to ten minutes before increasing the speed. You might also play fetch or something similar to warm up. This will accelerate the heart rate and increase blood flow to the muscles, preventing injury to a cold muscle. It is also a serious dog sport, believe it or not. You might want to start your Frenchie by dragging a small amount of weight ten to twenty meters. Repeat after 2 minutes of rest. When conditioning your French Bulldog, starting slowly and gradually increasing the weight and repetitions should be a rule of thumb. Several other options for pulling conditioning, such as pulling a skateboard or a sled, or pulling a sled or scooter, are available. A parachute can even attach to a weight vest for extra resistance—link to Weighted Harness. Tug of war Crouch and pull back while they use their strength against you. Most dogs enjoy playing this classic game. Some dog trainers oppose this game because they encourage dominant behavior. Swimming It is one of the best exercises you can give your French Bulldog if you want to keep him in shape. The equivalent of 10 minutes of dog swimming is the equivalent of 1 hour of walking. The whole body is worked, and resistance is provided, especially the front end, which does not require much work from walking alone. With the support from the water, your Frenchies joints and bones will be relieved, and it is also low impact, therefore suitable. An attached lure or toy hangs from a tree branch or pole attached to a spring. Little French Dog is a participant in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program, an affiliate advertising program designed to provide a means for sites to earn advertising fees by advertising and linking to Amazon. Half of these amino acids are manufactured by your Frenchie, but the remaining amino acids must be obtained through diet. It is possible to have a weakened immune system due to a lack of essential amino acids. In addition to low energy, your French Bulldog may have poor skin and coat conditions, and injuries and wounds may take longer to heal. Ideally, you will want to feed your French Bulldog high-quality proteins, meaning those that are easily digestible and absorbable. This is the case for poultry, such as chicken. The topic of dog food can be a contentious one. If feeding a premium kibble, make sure that meat is listed as the first ingredient. Corn or wheat are common ingredients in many foods, which act as fillers. Your French Bulldog would not receive the energy they need because it has very little nutritional value. A very popular diet is the raw meat diet. However, there is no guarantee that it contains the right proportion of protein. Raw meat sometimes contains a high-fat content. In and of itself, fat is not necessarily harmful. Dogs can use this as a source of fuel provided they are active. The low-fat content of chicken makes it an ideal source of protein for your French Bulldog. Rest and Recovery It is important to provide your French Bulldog with ample recovery time between exercise sessions so that you do not overwork your Frenchie. Strength and muscle-building sessions should be limited to three times per week to ensure that your French Bulldog gets adequate recovery time. It is advisable to wait one day between sessions and to go for a light walk. They also suffer from more inflammation as they get older. Age-related muscle loss is called sarcopenia. Creating a dog strength training routine that prevents muscle loss is great for building muscle in older dogs. The strength training routine should include the following: Exercises such as swimming are great for joint-friendly resistance training. Playing Frisbee, fetch, and tug-of-war are great ways to be active The cross-training exercise is an energetic and fun cardiovascular workout Walking for 30 minutes a day Regain Muscle After Injury, Surgery, or Illness Muscle atrophy is a natural consequence of illness, surgery, and injury. Pain, disuse, and weight transfer all contribute to muscles losing strength. It is also possible for dogs to suffer from cachexia, a condition in which muscle loss occurs due to heart failure, cancer, and chronic kidney disease. You can help your Frenchie recover faster and regain mobility by incorporating a muscle-building routine. Be Skeptical of Supplements Many people are still unsure about dog supplements. Do they contain any real health benefits? If your dog is unfit, you would not be alone in considering buying something to help it reach its ideal form. According to some experts, many supplements can be harmful to dogs, even though some might work. Thus, caution is advised. The best food and an exercise regime can help your dog see results, but it still takes time to see an impact. You should not give up on your French Bulldog just because it continues to resemble the runt of the litter instead of the leader of the pack! Take before and after pictures to be able to evaluate their progress. Conclusion Exercises that build muscle and improve strength are beneficial to all dogs. Older French Bulldogs with muscle wasting or Frenchies competing in canine sports to build their conditioning are included. For muscles to grow and repair, a quality diet that includes high protein levels and rest, and recovery is crucial. So simply take the age of your Bulldog in weeks and draw a vertical line. Where it intersects the graph line is the average weight of a French Bulldog at that time. Also, these are the averages for both a male and a female. As far as dimensions, they will typically be between 27 and 31 cm in height. Note that typically, the male Frenchie is a little heavier than females. The first few days and weeks will not be something you have a lot of control of. After this point, the responsibility of her falls squarely on your shoulders and you need to ensure she is provided with a wholesome diet. Generally speaking though, your French Bulldog should have the below included in her diet: Carbs — To ensure a decent blood sugar level the diet of your dog should be quite low in carbs. Fat — Canola oil, chicken fat and flaxseed are a great source of fat. The food that you provide your French Bulldog whilst they are still growing will have an impact on their growth rate. There is more to it than that though. I mentioned earlier that a lot rides on those first few days and weeks and also genetics. Did you see how big the mother and father were? Are they drinking? Do they appear active and full of energy? Your Frenchie will carry on growing up to around a year it does vary a bit. There are other health complications related to an overweight French Bulldog. They are more susceptible to heart disease and diabetes for instance. Is Your French Bulldog Overweight? There are some ways to determine whether your French Bulldog is overweight: They may look more podgy than muscularly defined. A good idea is to take photos which most people do these days and compare month on month. The French Bulldog already has problems with its breathing and being overweight will not help this. If, after some exercise, you notice their breathing is labored then it is a sign that they may be overweight. Other people have commented that an over-weight Frenchie will take less care in itself. Is Your French Bulldog Underweight? This is less common with this breed but it is something to look for. Again, comparing their photos against last month, etc. Look at their body, can you see their rib cage? Unfortunately, an underweight Frenchie can be a symptom of something more serious, such as a kidney-related disease. Do you mean you want them physically bigger or more muscular? There is nothing you can do about the skeletal size of your French Bulldog. The outcome is almost set by the time they come out of their mother. You must be very careful not to over-feed the Frenchie. Being overweight will cause problems with their already complicated breathing in hotter weather. Any Other Reasons? Did you check the history of their mother and father? There are some types of French Bulldog that are thinner than others. For instance, a lot of Russian imported dogs do have a much thinner look and will always look like this, whatever you do. Whereas, American French Bulldogs have more of a pug-like look to them. Should I Contact My Vet? However, a common mistake a lot of people make is not providing the whole picture to their vet and actually ending up misleading them. Make a diary of both their food intake and their exercise routine. Also, take frequent photos of them. It will give you all the information you could ever want about this rather unique breed! Along with a balanced diet, there are also certain supplements and activities that can help to add muscle bulk to your pet. Muscle-Building Diet The most important part of bulking up your pup is ensuring that their diet is carefully managed. Start by making sure your pup is eating a balanced diet that includes a combination of carbohydrates, proteins, and healthy fats. Look for a good quality dry kibble that contains the essential vitamins, minerals, and nutrients that your pup needs to stay healthy and strong. This kind of physical activity can help to improve their overall strength and muscle tone. Some of the most common supplements include creatine, which helps to increase energy and endurance; and whey protein, which assists with the growth and repair of muscles. Look for a supplement that meets the nutritional needs of your pup and consult with your veterinarian to ensure that it is safe for your pup. A good rule of thumb is to start out with low intensity exercise and gradually increase the intensity as your pup gains strength and endurance. In conclusion, with the right diet and exercise program, along with the use of supplements, your French Bulldog puppy can grow up to be a strong and healthy pooch with plenty of muscle mass and energy. To ensure that your pup is healthy and that they stay that way, be sure to consult with a professional before taking on any intensive exercise program or supplement routine. With the right approach, your pup can continue to thrive and stay in top condition for years to come. Related Info And Products:. It would also help to reward it when it shows signs of being happy and to avoid rewarding it for showing signs of being sad. If it persists for more than a few months then it would help to take it to a vet. Related post: Why is my German Shepherd afraid? Reward it when it is not sad To get your German Shepherd to be less sad it would help to reward it when it is not sad. By doing so you will be able to teach it that not being sad will get it things that it wants. You can reward it by giving it more attention or treats. Avoid rewarding the sadness As mentioned above, it is important not to reward it when it is sad otherwise it might learn that being sad gets it things that it wants. Instead, it would help to reward it when it is not sad. You can also reward it when it shows signs that it is being less sad and then to gradually require more and more from it. If you want a happy and obedient German Shepherd, this is one of the best online dog training programs available right now. You can get the first month free using This link. Canine depression is indeed a real thing. Top universities have conducted many studies on how dogs can develop, show, and understand emotions. German shepherds are highly sensitive and can get depressed. Your GSD can experience common emotions from happiness, jealousy, anger, depression, and more. It was also found that dogs were very capable of understanding the emotions that we experience and give off. This means that when you are happy, your German Shepherd genuinely understands this as happiness. Just like when you are sad, your GSD will also be aware of what that means. This is something I will cover more later. Hiding and avoiding One of the classic signs of canine depression is hiding or avoiding. Your GSD may be avoiding everyone collectively or one particular person. If you frequently find your GSD hiding or laying down in another room of the house, this is quite a strong indicator. Sleeping habits change Similarly to us, canine depression can influence their sleeping habits. Just like how we may not feel like getting out of bed, the same can happen to our dogs. If your German Shepherd starts sleeping a lot more, refusing to get out of his bed or wake up, it could indicate depression. This ties in with the next indicator… 3. Lack of interest Showing a general lack of interest in pretty much everything is a very common and prominent sign of canine depression. Ignoring, or not responding to things your GSD used to love, like playtime, dinner, going for a walk, all point towards emotional problems. This ties into having a change of sleeping habits, as a general lack of interest may be why your GSD remains in his bed all day. Changes in appetite Having a lack of appetite is another common sign of canine depression, but it must also be said that a decrease in appetite is a very common symptom of a wide range of unrelated health issues. Please note that excessive paw licking can of course indicate other issues like yeast infections and so on. This one is not as well understood, but some experts consider the act of paw-licking to have a very strong pacifying effect. And dogs will excessively lick their paws, as a way to comfort themselves. If you see multiple signs happening every day, you can be more sure. Another important point to make is that some signs, especially when on their own, may indicate a different issue altogether. For example, a change in appetite is a common symptom of many health issues. Our furry friends are particularly sensitive to how their owners feel, compared to other members of the household. Lack of attention German Shepherds like their fair share of attention, and despite appearing quite independent, like to be made a fuss of. The addition of a baby or partner The addition of a baby or new partner into your household is an exciting and welcomed change for you, but for your German Shepherd, it might not be! Sometimes, a change like this can spark emotions of jealousy and make your GSD feel left out. If your German Shepherd goes from being the focus of your attention to, well, not being your focus of attention… It can really upset them and take a long time to change. Someone in your household is depressed As I mentioned earlier, dogs are very sensitive to how we are feeling, and will oftentimes mimic our emotions. This can be the case in both the short term and long term. Your GSD will pick up on the emotions of someone instantly and may immediately feel that way themselves. Moving house Big lifestyle changes and events such as moving house can also trigger an array of unexpected emotional responses from your GSD. Suddenly going from their old house to a new house one day to the next is a very uncomfortable situation for any dog, and it can take a long time for them to adjust. Not receiving enough exercise or mental stimulation As a working breed, GSDs must feel like they are adding value to their pack which is your family. They have an inherent desire to fulfill roles and complete tasks for their leader. A strong work ethic is practically built into all German shepherds, and without frequently feeling like they have achieved something, they will start feeling dissatisfied very quickly. A healthy adult should receive around 2 hours of exercise, and have various activities throughout the day to get their mind working training, socializing, puzzle toys, nose-work games. Punitive training Last, but certainly not least, is punitive training. Unfortunately, this kind of training still happens today. Punitive training is when a dog is punished for getting something wrong, rather than being rewarded when they get it right. You may be surprised that this happens on a very small, almost unnoticeable level, all the way up to the worst-case scenario which involves physical abuse. This means rewarding your GSD when he gets things right. When he gets them wrong, you either ignore it or redirect the behavior to what is appropriate, then reward him after. The issue with punishment shouting or hitting is that dogs often misunderstand what they are being told off for, and eventually start associating negative emotions to their leader, which creates further distrust and disobedience. And the nasty cycle keeps repeating. And if you do see them, try to find a cause for it. Once you have identified a likely cause, you are better able to help your GSD. If you realize you have only been giving him 40 minutes of exercise per day and practically zero training, you can improve upon that area and see how it affects him. If there are no underlying health concerns, your veterinarian will then be able to help you diagnose whether or not your GSD is suffering from depression, and give you further advice. I hope this had given you some extra information to work with. If you have further questions please feel free to contact me. All the best, Harry. Caring Grooming: their shorthaired coat needs regular brushing: every day in the shedding season spring and autumn and three-to-five times a week in the rest of the year. Activity level With two highly energetic parent breeds, these dogs need an active life, so be ready to spend several hours a day keeping your pet busy. A Labrador Shepherd is generally 20 to 26 inches tall cm. Besides being active, you should have a large house, with a yard to provide her with enough space to move around. The Labrador Shepherd likes cold climates rather than hot weather, so be sure to have the ability to keep her comfortable all year. Further Reading Top 10 Dog Sports 2. They have it in their blood, and can successfully do police work, including searching, tracking, rescue, or guard work. Dogs from this crossbreed shed a lot, especially when the seasons change. If you want to keep her hair shiny and healthy, you should take time to brush her for at least minutes, three-to-five times a week. A consistent brushing schedule will help you reduce the amount of hair around the house. Besides brushing, you should include in your schedule: cleaning her ears once a week , brushing her teeth at least three times a week , and cleaning her eyes when needed. While this sounds like a lot, on the other hand, she only needs to take a bath about once a month. Exercising her on a concrete surface could help you keep her nails in good shape and reduce the number of visits to the vet. Always buy non-toxic toys, and substitute them with new ones as soon as they start deteriorating to avoid accidents. Your dog will need some strong toys, adapted to her age. Most hybrids tend to have a balanced personality, but as your puppy could be the result of more crosses , she may not inherit the exact characteristics you want in a dog; your future dog is prone to a series of health issues, caused by her bloodline. Obesity, hip and elbow dysplasia, eye diseases and diabetes are a lot more common with these dogs, but she could also develop epilepsy, skin allergies, bloat or cardiovascular diseases, these being common among Labradors and German Shepherds. From my point of view, most estimations work well for average dogs. You should buy your dog from a responsible breeder In most cases, a Labrador Shepherd has high potential and is a great candidate for the title of the perfect family dog. However, as mentioned before, hybrid dogs could have unpredictable coat colors, personalities, and health issues, so buying your puppy from a reliable source is as close as you can get to a clear image about your future dog. Generally, this hybrid can be 26 inches 66 cm tall and can weigh up to 88 pounds 40 kg. Taking into account the height and weight of its German Shepherd and Labrador mix parents, this crossbreed is a medium to a large-sized dog. So measurements can still vary more or less from that range. Good news for you! It will shower you with love and loyalty, and make you proud with its intelligence and playfulness. I think that this mix of German Shepherd and Labrador Retriever makes for the perfect family dog — kind, loyal, patient with children, and protective. Leave us a comment below and tell us about your personal experience with this unique crossbreed. My first Shepherd grew up as I did and wanted to be where I was at all times. I got my second dog as a 16th birthday present, and her loyalty for me was just as strong as my first. I hope that my contribution to Animalso will help others find dogs who give them that same unconditional love. But I adopted my little Hank recently and he seems both very playful and very cuddly. He likes to snuggle a lot but is very active too. Just wondering if I should expect him to go crazy one of these days? For a list of all the supplies we get for our new service dog puppies check out our New Puppy Checklist on the PuppyInTraining. Although a playful pup sounds endearing, consider how many games of fetch or tag you want to play each day, and whether you have kids or other dogs who can stand in as playmates for the dog. Click here for more information on this characteristic German Sheprador Highlights The German Sheprador is a mixed breed dog. The main colors of German Shepradors are black, white, red, cream, blue, and grey. Sometimes their coats are solid, and sometimes they have a mix of colors. While they are not a good choice of dog for allergy sufferers, their coats are pretty easy to care for. A good brushing per week will probably do the job. Many German Shepradors absolutely love to run and play in the snow. Their double coats also help to keep them cool during hot summer months. German Shepradors make excellent family companions and watchdogs. Protective in nature, they will alert when strangers approach. They can easily become board, depressed, and frustrated, which will result in unwanted behaviors. German Sheprador History The German Sheprador dog breed may have existed naturally over the years, but designer breeders started intentionally mixing German Shepherds and Labradors in North America, possibly in the s. Breeders wanted to mix the two parent breeds to minimize health problems that affect many purebreds as well as create an ultimate family companion and watchdog. They continued to create German Shepradors as demand for the mixed breed pups climbed. Even though the German Sheprador got their start as a designer breed, some have ended up in shelters or in the care of rescue groups. Consider adoption if you decide this is the dog for you. Check your local shelters, look up German Sheprador rescues, or check with breed-specific German Shepherd and Labrador rescues, as they sometimes help to re-home mixed breeds. German Sheprador Size As the German Sheprador is a relatively new mixed breed, there are few standards when it comes to size. That said, as a mix between German Shepherd and Labrador parents, you can expect the German Sheprador to be on the large side. Most weigh in at 60 to 95 pounds and range in height from 20 to 27 inches at the shoulder. That said, many can be smaller or larger. German Sheprador Personality German Shepradors make excellent family companions and watchdogs. However, once they befriend you, you have a friend for life. These pups hail from a line of two working parents. Their German Shepherd parents regularly work as military, police, and guard dogs, while their Labrador Retriever parents have jobs as hunting and guide dogs. German Shepradors like to work and need to have a job to do, whether big or small. Give them a sense of purpose, and this dog will earn their keep ten fold. They are highly trainable, and thrive on positive reenforcement. Do not leave them alone for long periods. While most are generally healthy, some may be prone to a few health issues, which is why it is important to maintain good care and regular veterinary checkups. Your vet can help you develop a care routine that will keep your dog healthy. German Shepradors are prone to weight gain, and they have high energy levels. Make sure your dog gets at least one hour long walk per day with several shorter walks mixed in. Hiking and other adventurous activities are also recommended.
