Nadelhaus breeds purebred German Shepherds year round and we also import both German Shepherd puppies and adults direct from Europe for our clients. Long-haired German Shepherds are technically called a long coat German Shepherd, while a short-haired German Shepherd is called a normal coat or stock coat German Shepherd. Dogs with either coat have the same physiological structure and both have double coats: an undercoat and a top coat. The only difference between the two is the top coat. The long haired German Shepherd will have a heavier top coat than the undercoat. The double coat of a German Shepherd is an important feature of the breed. The double coat weathers and insulates the dogs—it protects them from the cold in the winter and the heat in the summer. The length of the coat of a German Shepherd has no impact on its ability as a working dog. What does a long haired German Shepherd look like? The skeleton and structure of a long-haired German Shepherd will be the same as a short-haired German Shepherd. Both dogs will have an undercoat, but the difference is that the top coat of a long-haired German Shepherd will be longer. The long coat GSD has longer and silkier hair on the chest, back, face, tail, and on the backside of its legs. Short on the head, including the inside of the ears, on the front side of the legs, on the paws and toes, somewhat longer and more strongly covered in hair on the neck, almost forming a mane. On the back side of the legs the hair extends to the carpal joint or the hock and forms clear trousers on the back side of the haunches. Historically, German Shepherds originated in Germany and were native sheepdogs. He firmly believed that the standard of the German Shepherd breed should not include dogs with long hair. Throughout the s, long haired German Shepherds were considered unsuitable and unacceptable for breeding. It is important to note that long-haired German Shepherds are the result of natural genetic diversity and not a separate breed. Their long coats are an inherited trait that can occur when both parents carry the recessive long-hair gene. This gene manifests as a more luxurious and abundant coat, offering a striking contrast to the traditional short-haired German Shepherd appearance. The breeding of long-haired German Shepherds follows the same rigorous standards and principles as their short-haired counterparts. The focus remains on maintaining the breed's exceptional temperament, working abilities, and overall health. Over time, breeders recognized the value of long-haired German Shepherds and began selectively breeding them to maintain and enhance their unique characteristics. Through careful pairings and strategic breeding programs, the long-haired variety established itself as a distinct and cherished branch of the German Shepherd breed. How big do long-haired German Shepherds get? Long-haired German Shepherds are structurally the same as short-haired German Shepherds, therefore they can both grow to similar sizes. Males: inches tall, pounds Females: inches tall, pounds Since both German Shepherds are physiologically the same, they also have the same temperaments: loyal, intelligent, energetic, courageous and protective. German Shepherds are ranked 2 on the AKC Breed Popularity list and make for wonderful family companions and working dogs. How can I identify a long-haired German Shepherd puppy? In the photo below are two litter mates from a recent Nadelhaus litter. The puppy on the left is a long coat and the puppy on the right is a normal coat. The long coat has wispier hair on the chest, back, face, tail, and on the backside of its legs. Long-hair female German Shepherd next to short-hair male German Shepherd. Genetically in German Shepherds, the short hair gene is dominant and the long hair gene is recessive. This means if two short-haired German Shepherds are mated, but neither carries the recessive long hair gene, then no long haired puppies can be produced. However, if two short-haired German Shepherds are mated and both carry the recessive gene, then long-haired German Shepherd puppies can be produced. Long-haired German Shepherds are considered a less common variant of the breed, adding to their allure and exclusivity. While short-haired German Shepherds dominate the breed standard, enthusiasts of long-haired Shepherds appreciate their unique beauty and elegant appearance. Due to their rarity, finding a reputable breeder or rescue organization specializing in long-haired German Shepherds may require some research and patience. However, the joy of owning one of these beautiful dogs is well worth the effort for those who appreciate their longer coats and exceptional qualities. Do long-haired German Shepherds shed more than short-haired German Shepherds? No, this is a common misconception. Although they shed less than short haired German Shepherds, their coats still require regular maintenance. They will need regular brushing and grooming, especially if you enjoy hiking or outdoor activities with your GSD. While it is a rare occurrence for a long-haired GSD to not have an undercoat, most of them do have undercoats. And just like short-haired GSDs, their undercoats will shed more or less throughout the year depending on the season. Should I trim my long haired German Shepherd's coat? The decision to trim a long haired German Shepherd comes down to personal preference, but it is not a necessity. Trimming can help make for more manageable living around the house. If you choose to trim, you can trim around the backs of the ears, on the back of the legs both front and back and then thin the bushy tail. Shaving a German Shepherd on the other hand is never recommended. Their double coats help keep them warm in the winter and cool in the summer. What are long haired German Shepherds called? Regular brushing: Long-haired German Shepherds require regular brushing to prevent matting and tangles. Aim for at least a few brushing sessions per week to keep their coat in good condition. Finish your brushing session with a gentle dog brush to clean up loose hairs. Bathing and drying: It's important to bathe your long-haired German Shepherd as needed, using a dog-specific shampoo. Be sure to thoroughly rinse out all the shampoo to prevent any residue. After bathing, use a high-velocity dryer or a cool air dryer to dry their coat thoroughly, as moisture trapped in the fur can lead to skin issues. Professional grooming: Consider taking your long-haired German Shepherd to a professional groomer for occasional trimming and coat maintenance. A groomer can help keep the fur around sensitive areas, such as the paws and ears, tidy and reduce the chances of matting. Watch for seasonal shedding: Like all German Shepherds, long-haired ones will undergo shedding seasons. Be prepared for increased shedding during these times and brush your dog more frequently to remove loose hair. A de-shedding tool can be helpful in managing shedding and keeping their coat healthy. Remember, each dog is unique, and the specific care requirements may vary. Does Nadelhaus sell long haired German Shepherd puppies? Nadelhaus breeds German Shepherds puppies year round and while the majority of puppies we sell are short hair, we do have occasionally have long haired puppies. We breed all our German Shepherds in the black and red color. If you are looking for a long haired adult German Shepherd, we can also import long-haired German Shepherds direct from Europe. If your puppy is doing zoomies around the house, a chew toy with peanut butter on it or a bully stick will most likely grab their attention and get them focused on chewing instead of running around being crazy. After a long chewing session and a potty break, your pup will happily lay down for a nap. However, it is important that you monitor your puppy with new chew toys. For example, some toys are less durable than others and your puppy will chew through those in just minutes. He would completely ignore it until we started putting his food in there and rolling it around for him. Eventually, he started chewing on it a little bit, then realized he loved chewing on it, and it was one of his favorites for a long time. So to get your puppy hooked on chew toys, here are five tips. Put peanut butter on it If you spread a little bit of peanut butter on a toy, your puppy will love it. This worked for Oliver, especially with new chew toys. If you use a toy bin and rotate toys, you can recreate that feeling over and over again. Choosing toys that are the right size for their mouths will help them enjoy it more, and also keep them safe. They help wear them out, help relieve pain from teething, and they keep your puppy from chewing up your house. Have any questions about chew toys for Golden Retriever puppies? If your dog is known to destroy and chew up his toys, skip to the section below on toys for chewers. Reminder, as a veterinarian I have to point out that even non-chewers should not be left alone with a toy. The large size Bob-A-Lot from Starmark can fit up to 3 cups of food so you can serve a whole meal in the toy. The toy method of feeding is great for smart dogs like Golden Retrievers and keeps them from eating too fast. You can also add treats to the inside to encourage them to play with it. It is easy for your Golden to pick up and carry. All of this makes this one of the best toys for Golden Retrievers which is why I usually have a couple rolling around my house. This plush stuffed critter is one of our favorite toys for Golden Retrievers. It is fairly sturdy so it can handle a lot of shaking and a little bit of tugging. Plus it is just really cute and will pose well with your pup for all sorts of photos. They just love it so much that I keep buying it. However, the topic of toy destroying leads to my next section on toys for Golden Retrievers who are chewers. Many companies claim their toy is chew proof but there is no such thing. All dogs should be watched carefully as they play with their toys so that you can take them away if they start eating the pieces. However if your dog is a moderate chewer, here are two that my toy destroying dogs enjoy. The good news is that inside the toy is a Kong toy so even after they remove the fabric, your pup will still have a great toy to play with. The Wubba is great because they or you can throw it around, play tug, or just carry it around the house. They do come smaller for young puppies. These balls dispense treats or dog food and can hold up to some moderate chewing remember no toys will outlast a really aggressive chewer. My dogs love these types of toys. This will keep them entertained for a bit and the larger the pieces you put into it, the longer it takes them to get them out. Best Toys for Golden Retrievers — Puppies Puppies have special needs in each part of their development. Lesson learned: Do not give the Giggler to your puppy and then get on a conference call with work, enough said. Best Stuffed Puppy Toy. Classic Kong The Classic Kong is a versatile toy ideal for keeping your puppy entertained. Fill it with treats or peanut butter and freeze it for an added challenge. Teething toys are essential for puppies because they relieve teething discomfort. You can help your puppy through this challenging phase while protecting your home with suitable teething toys. Chewing on toys relieves sore gums and can help prevent destructive chewing behavior. To keep your puppy engaged and satisfied, provide a variety of textures and shapes. How To Choose The Best Toy Your Golden Retriever Puppy There are several factors to consider when choosing teething toys for puppies to ensure your furry friend gets the best toys for their needs. Here are some key points to remember: 1. To soothe their gums, for example, at weeks, you can select a Nylabone teething ring or a Kong Natural Teething Rubber Puppy Toy filled with frozen treats. You can introduce adult chew toys such as rope or fetch when they are past the teething stage around 24 weeks. The Type Of Toy Numerous teething toys for puppies are available, but some of the best options include sturdy rubber toys that provide both safety and durability. Bully sticks are also a good option for teething puppies. Many puppy teething toys are softer than adult toys because they are gentle enough for developing teeth but firm enough to withstand chewing. Look for durable rubber toys that can withstand chewing without breaking apart and posing a choking hazard. You can choose the best toys for your furry friend by keeping these factors in mind, allowing them to get through their teething phase easily and comfortably. Chewing is an innate need in dogs because it releases endorphins, which make them feel good and relaxed. Unfortunately, this can lead to destructive chewing of household items. In addition, chew toys are crucial for puppies during the teething stage. Their mouths become sore as their adult teeth emerge, and chew toys can provide relief. Furthermore, Golden Retrievers are known to be a mouthy breed. Because their breeding history includes carrying hunted birds in their mouths, they are accustomed to using their mouths frequently. As a result, chew toys are an essential tool for satisfying their needs while protecting your belongings. There is no wrong time for a puppy to pick up a chew toy and begin gnawing. Chew toys are beneficial during crate training because they can keep your pup entertained and focused on something that makes them happy rather than feeling lonely in their crate. If your dog is tearing around the house, a peanut butter chew toy or a bully stick can be a great way to distract them and get them to focus on something else. Additionally, chew toys can help a hyper puppy relax. Your pup will be ready to nap after a chewing session and a quick potty break. Supervising your puppy when using new chew toys is critical because some are less durable than others and can be easily chewed through. If your puppy chews through the toy quickly, the pieces may be swallowed or choked on. Here are some valuable tips to help your puppy learn to love their chew toys: Treat them with peanut butter: Most puppies adore peanut butter, and smearing some on a new chew toy can instantly make it more appealing. As they lick and chew the toy, they associate it with the tasty treat and develop a fondness for it. Toy rotation and storage: Because puppies enjoy new toys, try rotating and storing their chew toys in a toy bin. Toys that are too small can pose a choking hazard, whereas toys that are too large may be difficult for your dog to grip and chew on. Put toys in the freezer: When your puppy is teething, their mouth may be sore and hot. Put their chew toys in the freezer for a few minutes to cool them down and provide extra relief for their sore gums. Praise them for chewing: Positive reinforcement is essential for getting your puppy to enjoy their chew toys. Chewing is an entirely normal behavior in dogs, but it can become a problem when it becomes excessive and causes damage to household items such as shoes, carpets, and clothing. To prevent this, provide your Golden Retriever with a safe chew toy they can enjoy. Another cause of excessive chewing in dogs is a lack of attention from their owner. Training is also essential in reducing excessive chewing habits. Teach your dog not to chew on anything they come across by rewarding good behavior with positive reinforcement. Finally, exercise is essential. Golden retrievers are active dogs who require moderate to vigorous exercise regularly. They may become destructive and aggressive chewers if they do not get enough exercise. So give them plenty of opportunities to run, play, and let off steam healthily. The frequency at which you need to replace the toys will depend on how aggressively your puppy chews and how often they play with the toys. As a general rule of thumb, you should replace teething toys when they become damaged or start to show signs of wear, as this can pose a choking hazard or lead to ingestion of small pieces. Can I give my Golden Retriever puppy frozen teething toys? You can give your Golden Retriever puppy frozen teething toys. Frozen toys can provide additional relief for sore and swollen gums during the teething process. Be sure to monitor your puppy when they are playing with frozen toys and remove them if they become damaged or if your puppy seems to be having difficulty chewing. Golden Retriever puppies, like all puppies, will go through a teething phase during which they may be more prone to biting and chewing on objects around the house. Providing appropriate teething toys can redirect their chewing behavior to appropriate objects and help prevent destructive chewing of household items. Additionally, consistent positive reinforcement training can help teach your puppy appropriate chewing behavior. Toys that are designed to promote dental health often have ridges, bumps, or other textures that can help scrape away plaque and tartar as your puppy chews. Some toys may also contain enzymes that break down plaque and tartar, reducing the risk of dental problems. Harder toys made from materials like nylon or hard rubber can also help clean teeth and exercise the jaw. As well as potentially choking on them, broken toys can cause a host of internal problems for you golden, too. Safe Materials The best chew toys are fairly hard and durable, but there are a few other things you should look out for when making a decision. If possible, always opt for toys made of non-toxic materials. That way, if they do chew off and swallow any of it, the internal damage can be somewhat mitigated. Be Prepared To Pay For Quality Not all expensive dog toys are high quality, but most high-quality dog toys are more expensive than the run-of-the-mill toys you can pick up at your neighborhood dollar store. Spending a little more money now to get a durable, safe and fun toy that will last is ultimately less expensive in the long run than having to continually replace cheap toys that your dog can destroy within hours. As with any product, the best materials will necessarily cost a little more. Certain materials lend themselves to durability — one of the most important features of a high-quality chew toy for golden retrievers. Favorite brands like KONG and Goughnuts make some of the toughest and most durable chew toys on the planet, and they use special formulations of hard rubber to achieve this. Rope Toys A close second to hard rubber is the huge balls of rope that many dogs love playing tug-of-war with. The plush fabric can be torn apart easily and swallowed. Any stuffing and squeakers can be swallowed, too — a definite choking hazard and something that could cause internal damage. Like a plush toy, they can easily be chewed apart in a few hours by a power chewer, and the likely included squeaker can, again, cause health problems if swallowed. Plastic While plastic is often just about hard enough to withstand the jaws of a heavy chewer, it scratches up easily and — if it does break — could see your dog swallowing sharp bits of plastic. These toys will keep your pooch entertained for hours, and hopefully your belongings intact and safe for far longer. Incredibly tough and durable, these toys are able to withstand a lot of pressure from gnashing teeth and can last for years. The idea is to stuff it with treats or kibble and let your retriever toil to get it out; keeping them busy for a few hours. First, they need to control the wobbling toy and stop it from rolling away from them! The price of Boxer puppies in Texas might vary because of where you live and the reputation of the breeder. There are certain things you should consider when looking for a breeder like their location, reputation, and costs. The best way to research your breeder is by asking around for recommendations from other pet owners in the area. Word of mouth is often the most effective way to find a good breeder. Make sure you ask about costs and any guarantees or warranties that they offer. Visit Your Texas Boxer Breeder in Person Whether you physically searched for a Boxer puppy in Texas or found a breeder online, once you find one that interests you, the most important thing to do is visit them in person. It will also let you see their facilities first hand which can give you a better idea of what your puppy will be like. If possible, ask if they can let your future pup run around with other young boxers while you wait. This dog-to-dog interaction will help socialize him and make sure he grows up healthy and happy. Questions to Ask Ask for References from Your Boxer Breeder in Texas If you feel comfortable with your boxer breeder in Texas, ask to see references from other people who have purchased their puppies. If they are reluctant to give you any names or contact details of other customers, this might be a sign that there is something fishy going on. If previous customers had any issues with the company or their puppies, you should probably find another breeder. These people could also give you lots of helpful advice about your specific dog and what kind of personality he might have based on his parents and genetics. Meeting past customers will also give you the chance to ask them questions about their experience with your breeder. If they had any problems, this is your chance to find out all about it. The minimum amount of time usually given by breeders is 1 year but reputable breeders like those listed here at PuppySpot offer 2 to 3 years. Some lifetime warranties against certain genetic diseases. First of all, if the prices seem too good to be true…they probably are. Often times they just want your cash without caring about whether or not their breeding practices result in healthy, happy pets which could lead to expensive health problems down the road. Unethical breeders will also try to make you feel like they are doing you a favor by selling you their puppies, but this is just another tactic used to put pressure on the consumer. Finally, if the breeder says that only cash is accepted as payment…move on. Any refusal of credit cards should be an immediate red flag. Most reputable breeders will be honest with you and tell you if there are any issues or history of disease in either the parents or other relatives. The truth is that no one is perfect and every dog has some sort of health concern or another. Reputable breeders will know about these issues before they sell their puppies to you which means they will provide documentation for proof. How to Prepare Your Home for Your Boxer Puppy Before you actually bring your new boxer home, the first thing that you should do is make sure to set up a safe and comfortable area for them. First of all, you will need to find a way to confine your boxer while you are away at work or school. The good news is that there are many different options available for everyone whether they live in an apartment or have acres of land. You also want to make sure that the bathroom has been properly puppy-proofed before your boxer comes home. This will typically involve covering up anything sharp, electrical or poisonous items that could pose a problem for your new pet. Finally, if you have any valuable items on hand such as a TV or laptop, make sure to put them out of reach. In addition, whenever you bring them back inside from playing around in the backyard make sure to immediately put them on a leash so that you can quickly grab them if they need to go to the bathroom. Once again, this will be a lot easier if you have a fenced-in area for outdoor playtime but it can still be accomplished using an electronic fence if necessary. Boxers are incredibly intelligent dogs which means that most of them pick up on things very quickly. In fact, many boxer puppies learn how to properly eliminate outside all on their own within just a few days of being home with you. If they have any accidents inside, never scold them because this will only lead to confusion and mistrust. Instead, always use positive reinforcement by either praising them when they do something good or by giving them a treat whenever they go potty out in the yard. Continue doing this until they understand that going outside is the only acceptable place to have a bowel movement. I love animals and love helping people adopt a pet. The family may choose a puppy from the current litter or may pass to wait for a later litter. Many families also raise livestock and produce their own vegetables. We enjoy where we live as it is our goal to live a nice, quieter, slower pace of life. I am a cabinet maker by trade and work at a local business producing kitchen cabinetry. On evenings and weekends, I partner with helping my wife care for our pets and other animals. This is my favorite time of day. It was said that during my growing up years that I had a way of spoiling our family pets and loved spending all my time with them. I always made sure they had the greatest care. This passion has carried with me into adulthood and it is the same with our current pets as well. It was in , as a teenager that I discovered a passion for raising puppies. I picked a Boston Terrier for my first dog because I liked their personality, confirmation traits such as the flat muzzle and bulldog looks. It was and still is a great joy to watch them grow. I especially enjoy the first days their eyes begin to open and they begin to steady themselves and finally walk. We also really enjoy socializing and playing with them. Spending every day with puppies is amazing therapy for today's hustle and bustle. In my life was changed forever when I married my wife. She has been an amazing partner and we have grown to share many of the same passions. My wife is amazing with our dogs and is the one to care for them during the day. It is always sad for us to see a puppy leave our home to another but it is a greater joy knowing they are strong, happy, healthy, and going to a loving trustworthy family. We always enjoy seeing the pictures and stories that come back from our puppies forever homes as well. We couldn't resist their fun-loving personality and well-built confirmation. Since we brought our first puppies home to raise we have always been focused on raising the bar for confirmation short ears, short muzzle, blocky build and genetic profile. Raising the French Bulldog breed comes with a special set of challenges but those challenges can not contend with our love and dedication to the breed. We have some adults with both standard and more rare colors such as blue merle, blues, and chocolate. It's always exciting for us to see what colors will come about from our breeding program and we are always researching how to improve. We have environmental controlled housing with temperature adjustment capabilities and air quality filtration. We also have outdoor play areas dedicated to each individual and we socialize with them daily. Our vet makes weekly visits to do health checks so we can be confident each of our pets is at peak health. We routinely visit breeder seminars to take advantage of the latest research and stay up to date on health and wellness standards. It is ultimately our goal though to exceed the standards for raising puppies and seek to raise the happiest healthiest pups that we can. Our pets are fed only top quality grain free dog food, supplements, and immune boosters. In our focus on health, we are working toward having all our adult dogs OFA tested, certified, and clear of any genetic disorders. Thank you for visiting us and we look forward to meeting you. Blessing from us at South Prairie, Harvey Miller. Best seen on a computer, too many photos for most phones. Our puppies are all born in our home, or Kim and Justin's home. We love them to be house dogs and we work together to have a terrific line of quality Frenchies. Frenchies technically are born at the veterinarians since they have c-sections. French Bulldogs also often need to be bred by AI, and are normally born by c-section. C-sections also mean the moms will only have a few litters in their lifetime. Raising Frenchies, French Bulldogs is definitely not for everyone! The price of hard to raise puppies in breeds like French Bulldogs is simply greater due to the difficulty and cost involved in getting quality genetics and then of raising the puppies. Kims puppies at her home have started potty training at 6 weeks of age All puppies are microchipped and current on vaccinations. See the other pages: "About our puppies," "what comes with your puppy", and "is a puppy really right for you. Please do not get a puppy, or dog if you have any hesitation about long term responsibility of a furry best friend. We love our puppies and dogs and only want them in a home where they will be a part of the family! Frenchies are heat and cold sensitive, some more then others. Some are amazingly agile, fast, and athletic and do tolerate a wider range of temperature since we breed for a more open airway. Others are at risk of collapsing if overheated when simply out on a warm day and playing. Many make terrific therapy dogs. They are very sturdy and tolerant of children. See Fiona's story on the parent page. I need new photos! She has really grown, super cute! One up ear and one floppy ear yet. Mom, Mazzora, one of my favorites Mom, Mazzora, one of my favorites 6. He is a handsome guy, a unique heavily brindled blue, crate trained and well started on house breaking. Love to play and is catching on to sitting for pets, well socialized with other dogs and people. He is quite the ham, loves to bring you toys and bounce around in triumph. Very well natured getting along with lots of random dogs he's met along the way. We wont know if they are actually pregnant for awhile yet. The puppies would be 8 weeks old in December. Deposit information: Until puppies are born it is just an educated guess as to what colors they may be, or if the mom is even pregnant for awhile! We of course don't know gender, or color until birth. At times we have deposits prior to puppies being born, when that happens those families pick first and then the remaining puppies will be shown as available. We will post puppies as available until a deposit is received, then mark them as sold, or pending pick up. Always check by phone or email to be sure the website is updated for the puppy you are interested in. A deposit holds a specific puppy, or a place on the list for choosing a future unborn puppy. You can always pass and wait for the next litter when a specific color, or gender is desired, or just personal timing if you place a deposit. Past puppies and color references in the slide show! The dogs were bred to preserve traits that assisted in their job of herding sheep and protecting flocks from predators. In Germany this was practiced within local communities, where shepherds selected and bred dogs that they believed had the skills necessary for herding sheep, such as intelligence, speed, strength, and keen senses of smell. The first German Shepherd exhibit was in in Hanover. Credit for the formation of the modern breed is given to German fancier Rittmeister von Stephanitz. In while at a dog show Stephanitz saw Hektor, who became the product of a few generations of selective breeding and completely fulfilled what Von Stephanitz believed a working dog should be. Dogs with thick, curly hair need a lot of brushing, and the right tools and tips can make this process a lot easier. Steps 1 Set your dog on a table or elevated surface. All rights reserved. Before you start brushing, grab a spray conditioner made specifically for dogs and spray it all over your pup. If your dog has sensitive skin or allergies, talk to your vet before using a conditioner spray. Advertisement 4 Hold the hair up with one hand as you brush. You can start brushing your dog anywhere: the head, back, or legs is usually a good place to start. Hold your brush in one hand and gently press their fur up with the other, creating a line in the fur. Use the brush in small strokes to brush downward, making sure to brush through all layers of the fur and not just the topcoat. Gently run it through the section you just brushed. If the fur is fully brushed out, your comb will slide through no problem. However, if your comb gets caught on a knot or tangle, go back in with your pin brush to gently loosen the knot. If it gets caught on a knot, you could hurt your dog by pulling too hard. Advertisement 6 Check for mats in the ears, armpits, and toes. There are a few spots on your dog that are more prone to matting, and may need extra attention. Go to source If your poodle wears clothing or a harness a lot, check carefully for mats in the spots that the material touches their fur. The constant friction can create a lot of matting. As you work your way around your dog, brush them carefully when you get to these sensitive areas. If your dog jerks back or snaps at you, give them a break from brushing for a couple of minutes. Go to source To work systematically, try starting from the back of your dog their tail or hind legs and working your way forward across their body, front legs, and head. Go to source If you come across any mats while bristle brushing, go back in with your pin brush to work them out slowly. Advertisement 10 Visit a groomer for extremely matted fur. Trying to tackle tough mats yourself can be difficult, and you may even accidentally hurt your dog in the process. Advertisement 12 Brush your poodle every day. Try to brush your poodle every day to reduce matting and keep them looking great. While you should brush your poodle every day, you can save bathing them for about once a month. Bathing your dog too often strips their fur of natural oils, which can lead to dry skin and other issues. You may need to use different kinds of brushes to maintain the looks of your dog. This is because poodles can have different types of coats and each one of them has its own requirements. Some of the dog brushes that are usually used on a poodle are discussed below. Slicker Brush A slicker brush is the most common brush that is recommended for grooming a poodle. Therefore, a lot of people regard it as the best dog brush for grooming. Pin Brush A pin brush is similar to a typical human brush. It is also used in the same way as a slicker brush. However, if you want to minimize the shedding even more , shedding brushes can be helpful. They are designed with metal teeth to collect the hair that your dog may shed. The following steps can help you to brush your poodle at home. It re-hydrates the hair and makes the brush a lot more easy and comfortable. Likewise, it can also detangle and restore sheen to the hair. First, you have to examine the legs and hindquarters of your poodle. Use the pin brush to brush the legs. This will loosen dirt and help in discovering any tangles. While brushing, stroke the brush from close to the skin towards the tip of the hair. After brushing the legs, brush the tail, upper body, and ears in the same way. Command your poodle to lie down for brushing these parts. Removal of Tangles and Mats Once you have completed the initial brushing, you are all set to find the mats. Divide the coat of each part head, face, ears, legs, and body of your poodle into small sections. This will make it easier to locate a tangled area. When you find such an area, spray some conditioner on the tangle and use your fingers to untie any loose hair. Then, use a shedding brush to pick the tangles with its end teeth. You can also use a metal comb that has metal teeth. Start from the fringes of the tangle and work towards the center of the matted fur. Lift the teeth of the comb in and out of the hair without pulling. After that, use a slicker brush for brushing large tangles at each section of every body part. Use the brush in different directions to loosen the mats. Once it is done, pick up the tangles with the metal comb. Lastly, brush the whole coat with the metal comb and loosen any tiny knots which were missed. This brush will also facilitate in removing dust and debris. You can also spread the natural oils throughout the coat by using this brush. Otherwise, brushing two to three times per week is enough for a poodle. This will keep the mats and tangles to a minimum. Regular brushing also stimulates circulations and helps to distribute the natural skin oil. This is quite beneficial to keep the skin healthy. Frequent brushing will also maintain the beautiful looks of your poodle. This is because wet hair can make mats worse and then it is very difficult to remove them. Brushing a dry coat will also help the hair to become softer and fluffier. As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. Unfortunately, all this does is frizz it up and make it more likely to get snarled. Brushing through fuzzy, ratty fur is like walking backward everywhere you go. Plain water is better than nothing, but if you have some dog conditioner, a capful of that mixed in will help a lot. Dogs have unique needs for their skin and different oils. Our products can strip their skin and hair of what it needs and cause drying , itching, and even worse, matting. Gently work the damp hair with a slicker brush from the tips inward until the brush slides through easily. Poodle Bathing and Brushing Are Poodles hyper? They sure love to run and exercise! This rubbing can be as disastrous as trying to brush through dry Poodle curls. Go with gravity by starting at the top of the head and working your way down to the feet. If you and your Poodle are comfortable with a blow dryer, you can use this option, too. Following those steps will ensure soft, combed fur instead of a dry, frizzy, and tangled mess. If you wash, dry, or brush your Poodle wrong, your dog will probably let you know. If not, they might be less enthusiastic about the next bath and brush out instead. Using the right tools will help, like soft towels and the right brush. Brush a Small Section at a Time Start at the top of the head with a quality slicker brush. Work on a small patch of fur at a time. Instead, hold the tuft of hair in one hand, tighter near the roots to keep from hurting the dog, and pull the brush through the tips of the hair first. As it goes smoothly through that hair, brush further back until eventually, you can brush through the entire length of hair. Starting at the tips is much less painful when you hit a snag. This technique lets you work through the tangles a small amount at a time. For tough knots, spray a mix of water and conditioner directly on them and carefully work through them. This can lead to problem behavior like excessive barking. The most difficult thing to learn about how to brush a Poodle is being patient. Then take a small patch of hair directly next to it and start working on that. If you do, try to dry your dog more carefully next time. Spray with the finishing spray and brush as you go early in the process before the hair is dry. If you find some, brush those out. Then carefully brush the ears from the bottom up. Finish with the comb. Move on to the tail, from the tip inward, and the legs from the feet up. Part the hair as you go to ensure you only get a small amount of fur at a time. Finish with a comb, and pat yourself on the back. If you find hard-to-remove mats, a de-shedding tool or de-matting tool can help. Use it gently until it breaks down the mats and removes them. The tools are designed not to cut skin, but they can scrape and irritate if you use too much pressure. My wife and I love playing with our active miniature Labradoodle Max. Whether you have a pet Poodle or a show Poodle, it is vital that proper brushing and drying be done after a bath. The process differs depending on whether your dog is a pet or in show.So let's take a look at some of the most important things to know! After giving your Poodle a bath, the brushing and drying process will be combined. One cannot happen without the other. If you allow the Poodle's hair to dry naturally it will over curl, can become frizzy and most likely will quickly become a big, matted mess. Alternatively, if you brush a dry coat, you can destroy the Poodle's hair, as it will create terrible split ends and cause quite a bit of damage. If you need to brush your dog between baths, always be sure to first spritz the coat with a trigger spray. This should be a mixture of water and canine conditioner. Now, let's look at some of the most important things to remember when you want to properly dry your Poodle also known as fluff drying Towels You will want to dry the coat with a towel regardless of whether or not you use a blow dryer. The type of towel that you use to dry your Poodle will have an affect on both how well moisture is absorbed and whether or not there will be any contract friction that could be detrimental to the hairs. While most towels are made of cotton, it is the density of that fabric that will categorize one to be of higher quality than another. This is known as GSM grams per square meter , which gives the fabric of the towel its weight. The higher that number, the better the towel for after-bath needs. With that as your drying method, you will want to dab and blot the coat. Rubbing must be avoided. Any time you rub a Poodle dry after a bath, this can cause breakage or tangling even if you do have a quality towel. Since water drips downward, you will want to start at the head, go over the neck and back and then work your way down each leg. And do not forget about the tail. .Using a Hair Dryer If you have a pet Poodle in a puppy clip or other 'easy care' coat trim, you do not necessarily need to use a blow dryer; though in most cases it will be best. It does have its pros and its cons. The pros of using a blow dryer on a Poodle include: Speeding up the drying process That faster time drying time will help leave-in products stay on the coat as opposed to possibly rubbing off It allows you to lift and ventilate the hair to make it look proper A high velocity dryer will help make the Poodle's coat smoother particularly if a quality leave-in product is used If allowed to air dry, the coat can be curly, kinky and difficult to scissor The cons of this would include: Possible heat damage if held too close or if the wrong appliance non-ionic dryer is used While it will dry the coat faster, this is an extra grooming task that some owners feel that they do not have time for; though again if the right appliance is used it only adds an extra 5 to 15 minutes depending on the size of the Poodle. When all is said and done, the coat will have a better appearance if this used after giving baths. When this is done correctly, by brushing in small sections as you dry, this is called "fluff grooming" in professional canine grooming salons. Speed is a crucial element to proper drying. Spritz sections of the coat with a quality finishing spray as you go along and use a quality slicker brush. This will offer the hair strands protection and will help make the coat fluffy and soft. Ionic dryers are the best choice for this grooming tool ; these emit negative ion charges which break up the water molecules which in turn allows the coat to dry much faster. You'll find that ones made for us humans actually work much better than those branded as 'pet' dryers. For some, you might have to worry about the dirt he or she rolls around in. For others, the length of the coat may necessitate frequent trims. For poodles, the number one challenge is mats and tangles in his or her curly fur. Poodles shed, but their naturally curly fur traps shed hairs in place, so they're as close to hypoallergenic as it's possible for a dog to be. Unfortunately, their coat is very high-maintenance, which means they're less than ideal for anyone who doesn't have the time to dedicate to grooming. It's about more than the haircut, though. Poodles need continual trimming and grooming to stay healthy. If left ungroomed, their fur can trap dirt and grime close to your fur baby's skin, resulting in a skin infection that requires a vet trip and some medication to clear up. Applying powder dry shampoo in-between baths can help reduce the risk of skin infections in fogs with curly and or long hair. Our Momma Knows Best organic dry dog shampoo has been naturally formulated to maintain a healthy natural oil balance while keeping yeast, bacteria and pesky bugs away, and of course maintain your pup smelling fresh longer. Dry dog shampoos are in high use and demand today. As with everything you apply on or feed your dog, make sure to educate yourself about these products before use on your pup. I wrote an extensive blog post about the safety and use of dry dog shampoo. You can also check out the read more section at the bottom for more fur and skin care tips. It's a much better idea to stay on top of the grooming, don't you think? Groom Often Some people describe poodles as "high maintenance" based on how often they need their fur brushed. General recommendations are to have your pup groomed professionally about once a month every three to six weeks , depending on his or her personal needs. That's just for trims and deep grooming though. Not all poodles will require the same brushing frequency. Depending on the length of the coat, your poodle will need daily, near-daily or weekly brushing to keep his or her curls free of mats and tangles and to strip out shed hair that has remained caught in the coat. For example, long poodle coats will require daily brushing. Medium length poodle coats will do fine with times per week. And, short poodle coats can be brushed once a week. The exception to this is if you prefer to keep your poodle "shaved. A "shaved" trim is a short coat. Actually, shaved poodles are rare and are typically only seen when the poor pup has such heavily matted fur that there's no salvaging it. Pick a Clip Different kinds of haircuts, or "clips," for your poodle necessitate different levels of grooming. You can pick a style and keep up with it, or you can try out different styles every few months and see which ones your fur baby likes the most. Clip styles include: The puppy clip. This style is usually limited to younger dogs and trims fur around the face, feet, and tail quite close to keep from irritating your youngster. The lamb clip. This is a style that makes your fur baby resemble a lamb by clipping his or her coat short across the entire body. It's simple, easy to maintain, and makes your canine companion look like he or she is wearing a wool coat. Show clips. There are several kinds of styles mostly seen in show poodles , like the Continental clip or the Saddle clip. They tend to be more high-maintenance but very striking. These are just a few of the style options you can try out with your fur baby. What matters is finding one you can keep up with that looks good and that your pup enjoys. Use the Right Tools Do you want to maintain your poodle's coat at home, or do you want to take him or her to the groomer on a regular basis? The choice helps determine which tools you need to keep on hand. If you want to keep your poodle's hair trimmed at home, with less frequent visits to the groomer, you'll want to make sure you pick up scissors, clippers, and the right kind of dog-safe shampoo and conditioner to keep their coat and skin healthy. If you're only looking to do some maintenance at home, you'll want two kinds of dog brushes. The first brush is called a pin brush. Pin brushes have widely-spaced, usually metal pins, with safely rounded ends. These help slide through your poodle's coat, working out tangles and mats that form throughout the day as your fur baby frolics through life. The important part of a pin brush is making sure it has a cushion and that the pins aren't sharp as in the so-called slicker brushes. Poorly-made pin brushes, or simply used incorrectlycan irritate the skin and cause "undercoat burn," similar to how you might get a rug burn if you rub a stiff, abrasive fabric against your skin. In other words, a pin brush is stiff enough to work mats out of your fur baby's fur while being gentle enough to avoid hurting his or her skin beneath. The other brush you want to grab is a bristle brush. These brushes have denser, more closely-packed sets of bristles. They are more flexible than metal pins and softer. They don't work out mats, but they help to align curls and straighten hair. Usually, a bristle brush is ideal for short-coat dogs and dogs with straight coats, but they work wonderfully on poodles as well, especially when they're trimmed. The important quality to look for in a bristle brush is natural bristles. The EarthCare Deshedder brush is equipped with natural boar bristles, for example. I personally do not recommend synthetic bristles. While their cost may be tempting, they can cause static electricity to build up, which can be unpleasant and tangle hair further. The bristle brush is used to straighten fur, remove shed hairs, and gently exfoliate the skin beneath to prevent dandruff and skin issues. It also helps smooth out natural skin and hair oils and sebum, spreading it evenly across your fur baby's coat. That way, your pup will be shiny and lustrous, the envy of the neighborhood. There are other kinds of brushes and combs, but they're often either too harsh for your poodle's sensitive skin or are doing the same thing as one of the two brushes above. Rake brushes are stiff and harsh. They can be fine to work out mats if you're very careful, but it's usually safer to go with a pin brush instead. Slicker brushes are essentially the same as bristle brushes with one main difference: this are better left for professional groomers. Metal combs can help you find mats, but you should always use a brush to work the mat out as combs tend to further tighten any knots. Except for metal combs that can be safely used by almost any pet parent, we highly recommend non-grooming professionals avoid using rakes or slicker brushes as they may injure your dog. You may find that some manufacturers label their slicker brushes as "soft slicker brushes". Well, the truth is, there is no such a thingwhen it comes to brushing your pup's delicate skin with any wire-type of brush. Don't take our word, the ultimate test is to use them on your head first. Have you ever tried brushing your hair with a slicker brush? We know what you are thinking. If you haven't, we recommend you try it on your hair first. After that we promise you'll never try it on your fur baby. These tools simply take skill. Always get the right tool for the job. Your fur baby will thank you! Understand Your Fur Baby Some poodles love being groomed, while others have had bad experiences in the past and don't like it at all. Still, more are averse to certain kinds of brushes, the noise clippers make, or the feeling of fur being trimmed. It's important to how your fur baby responds to different grooming techniques. Different signs of stress in a poodle include: Excess drooling, frequent yawning, whining, barking, or a wrinkled muzzle can all be signs of mild stress. Rigid posture, barking, shaking, trembling, struggling, snapping, submissive behaviors, urination, and vomiting can all be signs of high stress. For poodles who don't like being groomed, you'll want to take special steps to make the process easier. Stick with the softer brushes , just in case he or she has sensitive skin, and the brush irritates it. Stay gentle and communicate with your fur baby. Your pup will understand you, at the very least, your tone of voice, and something as simple as talking to your pup will keep him or her calmer while being groomed. Try out a distraction or a reward. Some dogs respond well to simple positive reinforcement or even to basic distractions. You can read more about this in our guide to trimming nails. We all want what's best for our furry children, so you need to find the right balance between grooming for their health and keeping them calm and happy. Keep an Eye on the Skin Poodles usually have very sensitive skin. This is also why you need to keep on top of brushing their coat, because mats can trap dirt against the skin and result in an infection. Infections are irritating and painful and will require treatment at the vet. Obviously, you want to avoid putting your fur baby through this, and you don't want to go through it either! Keep an eye out for places where your fur baby is itching, look for redness or welts, and other signs of skin infections. If you notice that your furry friend has signs of a skin infection, you'll want to take them to your vet for a look. Skin infections can be irritating at best and dangerous at worst, so it's always better to get them treated ASAP. Develop a Grooming System Patterns are an important part of dog training. You don't want grooming to be an ad hoc affair because then your fur baby will never know what to expect, and that can cause him or her anxiety and stress. So, set up a grooming pattern and stick with it. Start with a conditioner. There are many conditioners on the market that you can simply spray across your fur baby's coat. The conditioner helps to hydrate the coat, makes it easier to remove mats and tangles, and reduces static generated by brushing. Look for a conditioner that doesn't have a strong scent, as poodles are often averse to strong-smelling fur treatments. Next, lightly brush your fur baby's coat with a pin brush equipped with rounded pins. We cannot emphasize this point enough. This will find and start to work out any mats and tangles that have accumulated since the last time you brushed. Don't brush too deep or press too hard since that can irritate your fur baby's skin. Just lightly brush his or her coat, allowing the conditioner to work through the fur, working out the mats you find. Make sure to brush with the right technique! Watch the video below from professional groomer Terri below. Terri shows a good technique you can use with your fur baby. Keep in mind that Terri, who is a professional, is using a slicker brush in this video. We highly recommend pet parents to stay away from using slicker brushes on their dogs. Our EarthCare pin brush is equipped with rounded pins that eliminate the risk of causing lacerations on you pup's skin. Additionally, our EarthCare Dematter has been engineered in Germany with Pneumatic Cushioning Technology for the ultimate gentle brushing experience. The use of slicker brushes should be left for professional groomers who have the skill required to not harm a dog. As stated above, before you use a slicker brush on your dog, we recommend you try it on your head first. We promise you will never try it on your dog after that. How to Brush a Curly Coated Dog Once you've gone over your fuzzy friend's coat with the pin brush, it's time to use a finishing brush. The boar bristle brush we've linked above is generally the best option for most canine companions. This helps smooth out his or her coat, finish working in the conditioner, and remove any lingering shed hairs, all without irritating the skin. Grooming doesn't have to be a stressful time, and the reward makes it all worthwhile. Do this every day, every other day, or every few days, depending on how much you have your fur baby's coat groomed and trimmed. If his or her hairstyle is thinner and shorter, you don't have to brush him or her as thoroughly or as often. If you've left the coat longer and thicker, you'll need to brush more often. There are plenty of dog hair detangling products online. One huge problem with most if not all commercially available conditioners is that they are loaded with parabens and other synthetic and toxic ingredients. From mild allergies to cancer. Unless you can find a truly organic dog detangling solution, we advise that you make your own. And when we say organic, we mean a USDA certified organic solution. Beware of self-proclaimed "organic" product status. Just like with any dog products today, the market is flooded with all sorts unscrupulous sellers. From the traditional Chinese product that clearly states "made in China", to the sneaky "made in the USA dog product" but actually made in China product, or made with ingredients from China products. The common denominator is many will claim a self-proclaimed organic products status. A self-proclaimed organic product status is nothing more than labeling a product as organic without having an authoritative third party endorsement. This is a common and dangerous marketing tactic. Self-proclaimed organic dog products are oftentimes more dangerous than similar products that do not use misleading marketing tactics. What is a Natural Detangler for Dogs? Saturate tough areas. Make sure to keep shaking the spray bottle throughout the session to make sure the ingredients remain mixed. Try to work through any matts with your fingers first. Then use a gentle detangling brush followed by a natural bristles brush. Spot treat unresolved tangles and work them with your fingers one more time. Remember, this detangler is free of preservatives, so it will not last long. Keep it in the fridge and use it within a week. Only the Best for Your Poodle Poodle grooming is a unique challenge few other breeds face. You need to keep up with it to ensure the most comfortable pup you can. Even small stress reactions or aversive behavior can indicate an underlying problem you might need to address. Thankfully, many poodles enjoy their grooming and will feel happy afterward. Because we begin with a Labradoodle and a Poodle, rather than a Lab and a Poodle, our puppies are much more likely to have the non-shedding Poodle coat. A F1b Labradoodle has been back-crossed to a poodle in an effort to insure a non-shedding coat. Even though most f1b Labradoodles shed very little or not all, it is impossible to guarantee that any dog even doodles or purebred poodles will not shed at all. Hypo- means less hypothermia is having a lower than normal body temperature. No dog can be said to be completely non-allergenic. Studies have shown that doodles are less likely to cause allergies, particularly f1b doodles. The ideal is to keep as much of the Lab head shape and super-friendly personality as possible while getting the non-shedding Poodle coat as well as the dignified, less vocal characteristics of the Poodle. Our Labradoodle methodology is quite simple. First, we get quality dogs. While spearheading the Royal Guide Dogs Association of Australia breeding program, he conducted the crossbreeding of a standard poodle and Labrador retriever in view of it being a hypoallergenic guide dog for blind people. The first example of this type of dog, called Sultan, went to live with a lady in Hawaii, where other breeders saw him as an inspiration and this is how Australian Labradoodle puppies started. Both the International Australian Labradoodles Association and the Australian Labradoodles Association of America are working hard to incorporate more intergenerational breeding so these dog breeders can register this type of dog as a purebred dog. Its gentle, obedient and intelligent personality combined with a hypoallergenic coat make it ideal for family members with allergies, but it also makes an excellent service or therapy dog. During puppyhood, their minds are highly impressionable, which is ideal for training. During their senior years, Labradoodles are more susceptible to health problems, which means owners need to keep a watchful eye. Labradoodle Size The size of labradoodle puppies for sale directly relates to the size of their parents and which generation of breed Labradoodle breeders chose. The larger the puppies, the larger the adult dog will be, and the faster their growth will be coming out of the puppy stage. A standard labradoodle puppy will weigh from pounds by the time it reaches two months of age. By a year old, it will have grown dramatically to up to 80 pounds, depending on the size of its parents. Medium Labradoodles occupy a spectrum of sizes between standard and mini Labradoodles, with the specifics depending heavily on the details of the breeding pair that birthed them and the breeding program they come from. Obstacle courses: Set up an obstacle course for your dog using household items. Scavenger hunt: Creating a scavenger hunt for your canine is a great way to exercise its body and brain. In general, Labradoodles need anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes of exercise a day. You can also enroll them later at a Labradoodle puppy alumni school for proper training. Friendliness What makes Labradoodles the perfect puppy compare to other dog breeds is their ability to get along with just about anyone. They inherit this trait from their Labrador retriever parent, a breed also known for its outgoing nature. You can trust your labradoodle to form friendships with everyone, from children and older adults to strangers and other puppies. Thanks to their affectionate, sociable personalities, Labradoodles make great pets for first-time owners, families, or anyone looking for a companion. Intelligence Thanks to their poodle parent breeds, Labradoodles are incredibly intelligent dogs. Because Labradoodles are intelligent, they often crave mental stimulation. Labradoodle Puppies Grooming Our Labradoodle puppies for sale have a variety of coat textures that dog owners enjoy, but in general, their low shedding coat needs brushing at least twice a week. Not only does this keep them tangle-free but it also removes excess debris from their coat, keeping them fresh and hygienic. Regularly trim the hair around their eyes and in between their paws to prevent these problem areas from causing irritation. Pooches with fleece coats tend to have longer fur and benefit the most from going to a professional groomer — although every dog loves getting pampered once in a while. These Pugs may be sold as miniatures, micros, pocket pugs or even teacups. However, the term teacup usually refers to a dog that is around 4 to 6 pounds 1. It is incredibly unlikely, if not impossible to get purebred Pug down to this size. Despite this, Teacup Pugs are still advertised and sold, and it is possible that they may be recognized by some designer dog registries. However, it is important to be cautious when considering purchasing a Teacup Pug as many of these dogs are the result of unethical breeding practices. This way, pug owners may buy a teacup Pug puppy, only to have them grown to typical Pug size as adults. Another way is through breeding dwarves , which can result in health issues for the dog and even if you do breed dwarves, dwarfism is not always passed onto offspring. Breeding runts or smaller Pugs, often with inbreeding, and withholding food to stunt growth are also unethical practices used to create Teacup Pugs. Crossbreeding Pugs with smaller breeds like the Chihuahua is another way that Teacup Pugs are created, but this can lead to unpredictable traits and health issues. Nevertheless, Crossbreeding Pugs with smaller breeds is probably the most ethical way to get a genuinely smaller Pug type dog. In conclusion, while Teacup Pugs may seem like a cute and desirable option for some, it is important to be aware of the unethical breeding practices that often go into creating them. It is recommended to instead seek out a reputable breeder who prioritizes the health and well-being of their dogs. The Pug breed originated in China, where they were bred to be companions for royalty. The Teacup Pug is believed to have been bred in the United States in the s, by crossing a Pug with a smaller breed such as a Chihuahua or a Pomeranian. In fact, many breeders and veterinarians caution against breeding Teacup Pugs and other teacups due to the potential health problems associated with breeding dogs to be unnaturally small. Pugs are already classified as a toy breed because of their small size. Breeders achieve this size by selecting the smallest pugs from litters and breeding them together. However, because of their very small size, they can sometimes face additional health challenges. Toy Pug: This term is a bit redundant since pugs are already in the toy group. Despite this, Teacup dogs have gained popularity in recent years due to their small size and cute appearance. However, it is important for potential owners to do their research and understand the potential health risks before deciding to bring a Teacup Pug into their home. Physical Characteristics of a Teacup Pug Teacup Pugs are small and compact dogs, with a height of around 6 to 10 inches 15 to 25 cm and a weight around 4 pounds 1. They have a short, smooth coat that comes in a variety of colors, including black, fawn, silver, and apricot. Their coat is easy to maintain and requires minimal grooming. The Teacup Pug has a distinctive wrinkled face, which is one of its most endearing features. Their eyes are large, round, and dark, and their ears are small and folded over. They have a short, stocky body with a broad chest and a curly tail. Teacup Pugs have a friendly and affectionate personality, and they love to be around people. They are playful and energetic, but they also enjoy lounging around and cuddling with their owners. They make great pets for families with children, as they are gentle and patient with kids. Overall, the Teacup Pug is a charming and delightful little dog that is sure to bring joy and companionship to any household. These include genetic disorders and physical health issues in Pugs as well as issues that affect teacup dogs. Genetic Disorders Teacup Pugs are prone to a number of genetic disorders, such as brachycephalic airway syndrome and brachycephalic ocular syndrome. These conditions are caused by the shape of their skulls and can lead to respiratory and eye problems , including red eyes and wheezing. They may also suffer from dental problems due to their small size and crowded teeth as well as obesity. Other genetic disorders that teacup pugs may be prone to include hypoglycemia, collapsing trachea which can affect their ability to bark , hydrocephalus, and neurological disorders. These conditions can be serious and require immediate veterinary attention. Physical Health Issues Teacup Pugs may also be prone to a number of physical health issues. Obesity is a common problem for teacup pugs, as they have a tendency to overeat and are less active than larger dogs. This can lead to joint problems, such as hip and back issues. Teacup Pugs may also be prone to skin and ear infections, sliding knee caps, and other issues. It is important to keep their skin and ears clean and dry, and to monitor their mobility and overall health. Caring for a Teacup Pug Teacup Pugs are adorable pets that require proper care to maintain their health and happiness. Exercise and Play Teacup Pugs are energetic dogs that require daily exercise and playtime. They enjoy short walks, indoor play, and interactive toys. Grooming Teacup Pugs have a short, smooth coat that requires minimal grooming and the occasional wash with a gentle 5-in-1 Dog Wash. Dog eye cleaning wipes like Dog Eye Wipes With Tear Stain Remover can gently eliminate residue build-up around the eyes and lighten existing stains. In addition, Teacup Pugs require regular nail trimming, and dog ear cleaning wipes like Dog Ear Cleaning Wipes can help eliminate ear wax, dirt, and odors while keeping their ears itch-free. Training a Teacup Pug Training a teacup pug requires patience, consistency, and positive reinforcement. These small dogs are intelligent and eager to please, but they can also be stubborn and easily distracted. Keep training sessions short and frequent, as teacup pugs have short attention spans. Make the crate a comfortable and inviting space for your pug, and never use it as a form of punishment. Socialize Your Pug Socialization is important for teacup pugs, as they can be timid around strangers and other dogs. Introduce your pug to new people and animals in a controlled environment, such as a dog park or obedience class. Be Consistent Consistency is key when training a teacup pug. Use the same commands and techniques every time, and make sure that all family members are on the same page when it comes to training. A certified dog trainer can provide personalized advice and guidance to help you and your pug succeed. Choosing a Teacup Pug Teacup Pugs are a popular breed due to their small size and adorable appearance. However, choosing the right Teacup Pug can be a daunting task. This section will provide some guidance on how to choose the perfect Teacup Pug for you. Adoption Adopting a Teacup Pug from a rescue organization can be a great option. Adopting from a rescue organization not only gives a loving home to a dog in need, but it also helps to prevent unethical breeding practices. Rescue organizations typically provide this information to potential adopters, which can help in making an informed decision. Buying from a Breeder While adopting is recommended, some individuals may still choose to purchase a Teacup Pug from a breeder. Avoid buying from a breeder that prioritizes appearance over health or that has a history of breeding dogs with health issues. This can help ensure that the puppy comes from healthy and well-cared-for parents. Whether adopting from a rescue organization or purchasing from a breeder, taking the time to do research and make an informed decision can lead to a happy and healthy life with your new furry friend. Frequently Asked Questions Are teacup pugs real? Yes, teacup pugs are a real breed of dog. Do teacup pugs shed? Yes, teacup pugs do shed. However, their short, fine coats require minimal grooming and shedding is generally not a major issue. What is the difference between a Mini Pug and a regular Pug? How much do teacup pugs cost? How small do Teacup Pugs get? Teacup pugs are typically smaller than regular pugs, but their size can vary greatly depending on the breeding. Some teacup pugs weigh as little as pounds, while others may weigh up to 10 pounds. What is the smallest breed of Pug? The Pug is a breed of dog, and there is no smaller breed of Pug. However, teacup pugs are often bred to be smaller than the average Pug. Are Teacup Pugs generally healthy? Teacup pugs can be prone to a number of health problems, including respiratory issues, dental problems, and joint issues. Final Thoughts In conclusion, the teacup pug is a delightful and charming breed that is perfect for those who want a small, affectionate, and low-maintenance pet. They have a lot of energy, but they also love to cuddle and be near their owners. Despite their small size, they are very sturdy and can handle rough play with children. One thing to keep in mind is that their small size can make them more prone to health issues, such as respiratory problems and joint issues. With proper care and attention, they can make wonderful pets for many years to come. Some breeders work to produce smaller and smaller puppies, which is done by breeding with toy breeds or breeding the runts. Unfortunately, this means breeders are selecting for size rather than health or temperament, so you could have a puppy that grows into an adult with behavioral or health issues. This unofficial term is more of a cute buzzword that highlights the novelty of these tiny dogs, which can often literally fit within a teacup. A toy breed, on the other hand, is an official term for small versions of standard breeds. Image Credit: kikkian, Shutterstock 3. They were favored as the impish companion of Chinese emperors and became the beloved mascot of the royal House of Orange in Holland. They make excellent companions and enjoy playing with their owners, including young children. Be sure to always supervise interactions, however, particularly if you have large dogs that can easily injure a miniature pup like a Teacup Pug. Puppies should be on high-quality puppy food for the first year. Then they can transition onto a quality adult formula. Small, stocky dogs like a Pug can suffer from health problems if they become obese. Still, Pugs are playful and lively, so they will engage in some exercise to stay fit. Short-faced breeds like Teacup Pugs and standard Pugs often struggle to cool themselves in hot and humid weather, however, so be sure to limit exercise in the heat. Early socialization is important for keeping Pugs friendly and tolerant of other pets and people. Regular brushing will remove loose hair and prevent shed hair from building up. They also benefit from occasional baths, and their nails should be trimmed regularly. Allowing the nails to grow too much could cause discomfort and, in severe cases, arthritis. Because these dogs are sometimes selected for their small size rather than good health, they can be more susceptible to common Pug health issues. Eye problems often occur, as well as ear issues, skin allergies, mange, and skinfold infections. Like other short-faced breeds, Pugs struggle with breathing conditions. Minor Conditions. With the Pug dog being the largest of all toy breed dogs, there is confusion among many people as to whether there is an actual breed of the Miniature Pug or "Pocket Pug" The Answer There is no such recognized breed as the Miniature Pug dog, toy, teacup or other term used to denote a smaller than average dog. However, there is a dog that is called a Miniature Pug One dog that is referred to as a mini Pug is a mix of a Chihuahua and a Pug dog. It is also called a Pughuahua or a Chugg sometimes spelled 'Chug'. Some refer to this crossing of two purebreds as 'designer' or 'hybrid' dogs. The result is a canine that looks extremely similar to a Pug, however one can notice a difference in the length of the snout which will be just a bit longer. The body of a matured "mini Pug' will be leaner with longer legs. This will depend on the Pug to Chihuahua gene ratio that is passed down to the puppy; though most will be smaller than a typical Pug. Final adult weight will range from 3 pounds 1. Is This Safe? Yes and no. Many discourage the mixing of purebreds. It does not help toward breeders' goals of maintaining integrity and improving the bloodlines of either purebred. Breeding and subsequent pregnancy can pose risks. If a Chihuahua is chosen as the dam, with a Pug being the sire, the puppies will have larger heads due to Pug genes than otherwise. The breed is already prone to needing C-sections and this sort of crossing only increases the chances of that. Pocket Pugs While a breeder can in fact breed a Chihuahua with a Pug to produce what the public knows as a Miniature Pugs, there are others who claim to have "Pocket Pugs" Some breeders will take 2 runt Pug dogs dogs that are the smallest of their litter and then breed them together, hoping to produce smaller than nature intended dogs, and will dub them teacups. When you take two tiny dogs, that are smaller than the breed standard, these dogs may require more care. Bones may be more fragile, there may be issues with hypoglycemia, etc. To pair two tiny Pugs will only serve to produce more Pug puppies that are too small and with more potential health issues. Others will falsify the pup's age so that one will believe that they are receiving a small Pug when that dog is actually younger than the papers show. As you can imagine, this is highly unethical and is very dangerous for the pup's health. Caring for an Undersized Pug If you have obtained the so-called "Miniature Pug" or "Teacup", care will follow along the guidelines of the care of smaller toy breed dogs such as the Pom or toy Poodle. Because this dog will can be as small as 3 pounds 1. You may also have a Pug that happens to be smaller than average due to Mother Nature. What is considered small? However a pocket pup these sizes may be growing slow. He or she may have a growth spurt later on and reach the standard size. Here are things that you can do to best protect your undersized or mini Pug: When driving in the car, any dog should be fastened in safely with a seat restraint. However, a Miniature Pug will be especially vulnerable to falling off of the car seat during a sudden stop or quick turn and can be injured very easily. Care must be taken when family members are walking around the home. Small children must be aware that this dog can scoot under their feet quickly; if a child or any person stepped on a Miniature Pug by accident, great harm would be done. Having a mini Pug sleep in an owner's bed can have risks. Being so tiny can hold the risk of suffocating under thick blankets or being rolled onto unintentionally during slumber. This smaller type of Pug will not be able to hold their elimination quite as long and time and patience should be given in regard to house training. This very tiny dog will be considered an "underfoot dog"; as they should be. Very tiny pups and dogs can be easily stepped on or tripped over. The weather may affect this Pug more than usual. It is recommended that any small toy breed dog have dog clothing for outdoor elements. A small dog should be protected from the cold, most importantly. Rain gear is also suggested. If your Miniature Pug is a cross between a Pug and a Chihuahua, there may not be any extra health concerns. However if your tiny Pug is a result of unethical breeding, health issues can be many. What is a teacup dog? How are teacup dogs made? Teacup versions of already small dog breeds include Pugs, Pomeranians, Shih Tzus, and Chihuahuas, amongst others. Puppies are often photographed sitting inside of teacups, to showcase their small size. But how are these teacup versions made? There are a few ways. Teacup dogs are usually produced by breeding runts together to create the smallest version of the dog possible. Unfortunately the small dogs chosen to breed are sometimes also not the healthiest. They may be small because of a birth defect or other medical condition, and that can then be passed on to their offspring. Health risks for tiny versions of dogs can be significant, and breeders often take these risks because they want to rake in the big bucks. Another way a teacup dog might be bred is by mixing smaller breeds. For example, a teacup pug might have a small amount of chihuahua in them, to ensure a smaller size. What is a Teacup Pug, or a Toy Pug? What is the pug breed standard? Glad you asked. What is a very small pug called? In the United States and Canada, the pug breed standard only has one classification — standard. However, people do use certain words to describe purebred pugs that happen to be on the small side. They often just have one goal: to breed smaller and smaller dogs. Common health risks that come with breeding small versions of dogs include: Hydrocephalus: also known as water on the brain, hydrocephalus is a build-up of fluid in the brain. Hypoglycemia: a condition where the blood sugar glucose level is lower than normal. Collapsing Trachea: Tracheal collapse is when rings of cartilage in the trachea begin to flatten out, making it difficult for air to get to the lungs. Patella Luxation: or sliding kneecap, is a condition where the knee cap rides outside the femoral groove when the knee is flexed. They can also be prone to seizures, respiratory issues, and liver shunts. These health issues and complications result in higher vet bills, and dogs with shorter life spans. Share your comments below. Pin for later! This is largely due to their natural charm and loving temperament, which usually extends to children and other pets. Distinctive physical features include a large round head, big dark eyes, and a wrinkled brow. An adult Pug stands between 10 and 13 inches and weighs between 14 and 18 pounds. To be classed as a Miniature Pug they simply need to fall below these parameters when full grown. In some ways, a small dog seems like having a puppy forever. There are three ways to miniaturize a dog breed. The first is to mix a standard breed with a smaller breed, as in the case of the miniature Pug. The second way is to introduce the gene for dwarfism, also known as achondroplasia. The final way is to repeatedly breed from the smallest, or runts, of litters. Mixed Breed Minis Chihuahua Pug mixes can look quite Puglike as puppies, albeit often with shorter muzzles. But their personality will be quite different to your average Pug. Both the Chihuahua and the Pug are already very small dogs. Each of these breeds has more than their share of inherited health problems. The Chihuahua and the Pug have the same amount of teeth as any dog. The problem is that little dogs have little mouths, and their teeth crowd together. This puts the miniature Pug at a high risk for tooth decay and gum disease. Due to their small size, Chihuahuas have trouble giving birth and often require cesarian sections. If a Chihuahua is the dam and the Pug is the sire of a miniature Pug, the mother is very likely to have difficulty producing a litter. Dwarfism Genes A popular method of shrinking a puppy down in size is introducing the gene for dwarfism, which shortens the legs and therefore their height. However breeding for extreme conformational traits has been shown to result in an increased risk of certain diseases. And using the gene for dwarfism has been linked to intervertebral disc disease along with some other painful conditions. Breeding From The Smallest Dogs There are breeders who try to create even smaller dogs by breeding two runt Pugs together. These dogs are referred to as micro mini Pug puppies or pocket Pugs. When dogs are way under the breed standard , they can already possess health issues like hypoglycemia and heart defects. Breeding two extremely small dogs together is very likely to cause even more health issues and is highly unscrupulous. General Pug Problems Any Pug or Pug mix is at risk of the two main health complications this breed is prone too. The endearing short muzzles, wrinkled facial skin, and bulging eyes are associated with brachycephalic airway obstructive syndrome. This makes them prone to seriously compromised respiratory systems. Their short flat faces make it very difficult for them to regulate their body temperature. This means they can overheat very quickly in warm weather. Abnormally shallow eye sockets , which make the eyes protrude, are another issue for brachycephalic breeds. Screw tail is another disease brachycephalic breeds are genetically predisposed to. If the deformity occurs higher in the spine, it can be very painful and cause severe neurological problems. How to Avoid Unscrupulous Breeders Miniature Pug puppies, like many miniature breeds, are a hot commodity, and breeders are getting thousands of dollars for these pint-sized pups. Unfortunately, this is a huge incentive for disreputable breeders to create smaller and smaller dogs. If you see advertisements for micro mini Pugs or teacup Pugs, this is definitely a breeder to avoid. Another red flag is if there is no waiting list and puppies are immediately available for purchase. Ask questions about their breeding practices. Any reputable breeder should be informed about the health issues surrounding miniature breeds. Miniature breeds are usually prone to more health issues. Their unnaturally small size means they also become injured more easily. When you have two small breeds like the Chihuahua and the Pug, who already have many health problems, you can see that this is a dog who is greatly at risk. The only way to stop breeders from creating very small dogs is to not buy them. Perhaps this is a fad that will soon cease to be popular. But in the meantime, dogs specifically bred to be tiny and fragile are suffering.

Solid black German Shepherds can easily be confused with actually often confused with bicolor or black and tan dogs from a distance, which contributes to the belief that black is most common. In fact, amongst the four official coat colors of the GSDs sable, bicolor, black and tan, and straight black , pure black puppies are the least common you'll find! This is true because the black color gene is the least dominant recessive of the four color genes. If you want to buy an all black German Shepherd puppy from Hayes Haus, you may have to wait a bit. We rarely have solid black German Shepherd puppies for sale. The Sable coat color in German Shepherds is the most dominant gene. More dominant than GSDs of other colors because sable will show even if there is only one sable allele. The german shepherd puppies for sale in ky have a clever, devoted, and enthusiastic nature. Friendly but reserved. They frequently experience separation anxiety and typically like spending time with their family. Although dark sable german shepherd puppies for sale are not inherently aggressive, they can be wary of strangers at first because of their protective nature. Dogs have a tendency to be kind to people and other animals, but if they are left alone for too long or don't receive enough exercise, they may develop behavioural issues like hostility. Long coat german shepherd puppies for sale are known for their loud barks, but with the right socialisation, this characteristic can be lessened. The long coat german shepherd puppies are one of the most adaptable breeds in the world thanks to its intelligence and desire to please. Exercise Because of their endurance, intellect, agility, and excitement, adult German Shepherds require at least two hours of daily exercise in addition to a lot of cerebral stimulation. Without enough mental and physical exercise, GSDs are more likely to release their pent-up energy through destructive or undesirable behaviours including chewing, chasing, pulling on the lead, and barking. Training Advice The desire to please and sensitivity to your reactions are traits of German Shepherds. Therefore, it is advisable to concentrate on applauding excellent behaviour and ignore or reject "poor" behaviour before moving on. It is advisable to begin long-coat german shepherd puppy training when the dog is 8 weeks old. GSD puppies will quickly establish their own rules if they are not given structured training from an early age. Prioritising socialisation is crucial since the GSD breed can become defensive around strangers because of its loyal nature. Early exposure to new situations, people, and things is important for puppies. Game ideas Play games that require you to look for, track, and retrieve objects. GSDs are typically quite good at and willing to participate in obedience training. They are also very owner-focused. Quick Links.

A brush-down once or twice a week and the occasional bath as needed will keep their short coat healthy and looking great. Nail trims once or twice a month are usually enough to keep nails from growing too long. Checking ears weekly and carefully cleaning as needed can help prevent ear infections. Checking and wiping their facial wrinkles weekly or a few times a week if your dog is prone to getting into things can help keep their wrinkles clean and free of irritation. Dental diseases, like gum disease, are the most common health issues in older dogs because dental care is often overlooked; and, it can lead to other serious health issues. Brushing daily, plus cleanings at the vet when needed, is ideal. The Boxer is a high-energy dog breed that needs plenty of daily exercise to stay happy and healthy.
