If you are looking for the best quality Pug puppy breeder in Hawaii HI state , then you are in the perfect spot! They are now one of the most favorite pets for many urban people looking for small but loyal dogs. Nowadays, many sellers will pretend to breed healthy, purebred puppies only to deliver puppies that are sick or mixed breeds in different states let alone Hawaii. Some people simply vanish after being paid. They are a kennel-based puggy breeder who is very conscious about their pups. They raise the puppies with a lot of love and care. They do not hesitate to provide the best facilities to their little babies. At Shaolin Pugs, the dogs stay in the house or at work with the breeders most of the time. They separate their dogs in different runs based on different criteria. The owner particularly uses this apartment to keep their Puggies healthy, safe, and germ-free. Shaolin Pugs starts to train their puppy litter at the age of days old. They raise their pups to be socialized and obedient so that they can easily adjust to their new house. They are also concerned about the new owner. They make sure that the pup parents do not have to bear a lot to manage the little pooch. Their pugs get their parental clicker training at the age of 30 days. Shaolin Pugs do not compromise with anything while producing quality pups. To know more about them and have a look at the available pugs, do not forget to check out their website. Pugs are the most noticeable breeds in the Dogdom, with their chopped-up, saggy faces, bug-like dangling eyes, squat, skinny legs, and wavy, pig-like tails. Pugs are available in four basic colors: fawn, silver-fawn, apricot-fawn, and black. The most common in Hawaii is a fawn pug. Actually, approximately two-thirds of all pugs are fawn in color. They range in color from light cream to dark cream, with varying shades of gold. They may have red, orange, or silver undertones as well. Not only do these colors differ, but they can also be shaded differently, with some areas of the body being a different color than others. Where can I take my Pug in Hawaii? Though Puggies are not an athlete type of dog breed, they need an optimum amount of exercise to stay fit and healthy. You can take your pup for a walk with you in the morning or evening. You can also take your furry friend for a little jogging if you want. But make sure your pup can keep pace with you. Walking for three miles a day is sufficient for the pug puppies. But if your pooch is a few weeks old or never has walked before, do not take it for such a long walk. You can also take your pup to a dog park. Pugs are more likely to get adjusted with other dogs and children. Why to avoid puppy mills and backyard breeders while choosing a Pug Puppy in Hawaii? Purchasing a Pug puppy from a puppy mill or backyard breeder is not the wisest decision in my opinion. In general, I do not recommend that people purchase any breed of dog from a pet store. Because puppy mills or backyard puppies choose their business profit over the well-being of the pups. Pugs are very adorable, loyal, and easy to control in general. But in puppy mills or backyard breeders, do not ensure that the Puggies are purebred. Besides, they do not provide sufficient veterinary care and treatment that a pup deserves. So, once you get a Pug from them, you may have to suffer because of their carelessness. Is it a good idea to get a Pug Puppy from a rescue center in Hawaii? Why Not? Purchasing a Pug puppy from a Hawaii rescue center is not always the best option in my opinion. A significant number of rescue dogs have a troubled past and are not fully trained and vetted at such a young age. As a result, they are not as social and friendly as they would be if they stayed at home. Though Puggies are considered as one of the best breeds of pets, they still need all types of veterinary care and socializing training to adapt to any environment. But at a rescue center, the pooches do not get these necessary treatments. It becomes difficult for the owner to deal with the dog later. As a result, there is no guarantee that a Puggy pooch will be perfectly healthy. Having such a dog as a constant companion can be dangerous and harmful at times. For all of these reasons, getting your little furry friend from a genuine Pug breeder is the best option. Are Pugs good for first time owners? Pugs are one of the most popular breeds of dogs. People who truly love pugs have a separate and special fan base. Pugs are generally loyal, adorable, playful, and funny to be with. And that makes them a really good breed for the first-time owners. Though pugs need their regular walk or exercises, they are not athletic dogs. Now whether these toy dogs will be the best option for you depends based on what you want in a pet. Pugs are wonderful dogs, but they are not for everyone. The Pug temperament is one of stubbornness, and it will require a patient and understanding owner. They are, however, extremely loyal and are raised to satisfy their owners. They make excellent pets for families and anyone with the patience to train a playful breed. What do I need to know about Pug puppies? Pugs are insatiably curious creatures who are constantly on the lookout for new things to do. They are known to be attention seekers. They become unhappy if they make a mistake. Pugs are easy to train. They are also particularly fond of food. Pugs are prone to putting on weight due to their physique and proclivity to overeat. Pug puppies are also good with other dogs and children. They can adapt to people easily and are very playful. The average lifespan of a pug puppy is years. How to raise a Pug puppy? They make excellent family pets and can be trained in a variety of skills ranging from adherence to adaptability. To raise a Pug puppy, you must strictly adhere to its diet, early social interaction, and training classes. You should also ensure that they are vaccinated at the proper age, their tails are docked, they are dewormed, and their dew claws are removed. Pugs are low-maintenance dogs. Pugs, contrary to popular belief, shed, and their coarse short hair requires regular grooming. Pugs respond well in training sessions if positive reinforcement is applied. How long are Pugs in the puppy stage? The period of the puppy stage varies from breed to breed. In the case of Pugs, the puppy stage stays up to twelve to eighteen months. A Pug is considered an adult at the age of one year, though he or she may still exhibit puppy-like characteristics. Between the ages of twelve and eighteen months, puppies usually develop the mental maturity and personality of an adult dog. Some of the Puggies may show puppy attitude up to two years. Why are purebred Pug puppies expensive in Hawaii? Pug puppies cost more than other toy pups found in backyards, mills, or pet stores. Because breeders are strongly concerned about the welfare and safety of their puppies. They simply do not see it as a viable source of income. Rather, they do it with passion and enthusiasm. Even if the price is a little high, original dog breeders will always choose the best facilities for their mutts, such as food, kennels, healthcare, veterinary checks, and so on. As a result, a purebred Pug puppy is a little pricey anywhere let alone HI State. How do I find a good Pug breeder in Hawaii? To be honest, finding a genuine Pug breeder in Hawaii is not a piece of cake. You have to research a lot and to find out the best breeder of the State. Many pet stores or mills sell these toy dogs, but their primary goal is to make a profit off of these little pups. Your friends, family, or any well-known person can also be of great help if they are aware of any reputable Pug breeders. You can also use social media in your authentic Pug breeder hunting mission. Do not miss any dog show around you. There are always some breeders present in a dog show. You may get your desired breeder there on whom you can actually rely on. If you want, you can go to their website and have a look. There is no doubt that they are one of the top toy dog breeders in Hawaii. Why are Pugs so popular in Hawaii? Pugs are very fond of children and are strong enough to play as long as it is not too rough. Pugs are extremely friendly, and their energy and desire to cuddle and sleep make them an excellent choice for a family dog. Puggies are also very smart, playful, clever, and quick learners. With proper training, care and love, they become the best companion of humans. Pugs love everyone they meet, but they do have a favorite person who they will stick to and follow around everywhere. The adorable wrinkles and big bug eyes of a pug do more than just make it look cute. How much does a purebred Pug puppy cost in Hawaii? The cost of a Pug puppy is determined by a number of factors. The majority of purebred Puggies come with being potty trained, registration papers, veterinarian examination, health certificate, health guarantee, and so on. The price may decrease or increase depending on the number of features provided by the breeders. If the toy dog you choose comes from the champion breeding line, the price may increase a little. We are proud of all of them and their accomplishments. Each pug was selected for specific matching attributes long before arrival to our home and kennel. Our 1st pug Am CH. Shang is retired from the confirmation ring and currently does us very proud with preformances in obedience trials. Our little buddy practices with the group every saturday at St. Joseph's School in Hilo and shows about 4 times per year. Shang took 1st place at his last show. .Every pug has to have a job in our home. .Shang brings home the bacon, ribbons and prizes now in obedience. Perry, Queensland, AU for being indirectly responsible for Shang sharing our lives. We also thank this couple for sharing their homes and lives with us on our recent trip down under! Terry even had the previledge of showing one of Margaret's pugs in degree heat. .Thats Australia for ya! Kept the dogs cool with ice and put ice in our hats to stay cool in the ring. Thanks to Margaret and Graham! Shang appears to be my "protector" and likes nothing better than to go to work with me and watch out after me under my desk. Our 2nd pug Am CH. Shackie is true to the breed standard with Sire AU. We appreciate the many hours of on line education Richard and Anne Costen of Saxten Kennel have provided to us. This couple have been line breeding pugs for 25 years. Saxten Kennel has racked up and impressive number of champions and BIS winners over the years. We have found that the long standing line bred feature in the Saxten pugs brings a lot to the breeding table. Shackie received his title in as well as Group 1 placement at his last show. We look forward to bringing Shackie out for more shows in as he is a winner AND fun to show. Lord Shackelton 1st explored Antartica at the beginning of the 19th century. He and his crew became strained and landed in Tasmania making an incredible story short. As a pup Shackie was an "explorer" so Richard and Anne named him Shackelton. Shackie is my best buddy. Our pugs live in a pack and it appears that Shackie is the pack Alpha. It is very interesting for me to watch pack behaviors. Shackie watches out for all his "ladies". We all honor Shackie except Shang. Shang and Bella seem to be their own pack at times. Then Bella seems to work between both packs. Everybody loves Bella, doesn't matter what she does. Our 3rd pug Am CH. Bonnie has a fantastic background including mum Ch. Bonnie easily attained her American Championship title in a little over a year after arrival. Bonnie is the result of planned line breedings by the Saxten Kennel for which we are pleased. This pug has an incredible golden coat. You may see a couple good photo shots of this coat under her name on this website. By the way.Bonnie came from a litter that where all named after old world Roses. Bonica is a beautiful old world sweet smelling rose. Bonnie is my "soul Sista". Bonnie is also apparently a nurse. Bonnie can spot a troubled painful spot on humans and gives it great interest and often licks the spot. Bonnie can also find painful spots on the other pugs and licks them as well. Most recently in Hawaii Bella earned her American Championship in three shows with three 5 point majors. Bella is from Heroncrest Kennel in Ontario and is an exceptionally well put together bitch being very short backed. Heroncrest's Drama Queen. Bella is now working on her American Grand Championship. We are contemplating motherhood for .Bella's uncle is: Am CH. Grandsires are: Am CH. Bella was named after a casino in Las Vegas.True to her name she has been a very lucky girl. Bella is also a fantastic cuddle doggy which I enjoy perhaps most of all! Our 5th pug AM CH. Vito has only been shown one weekend at the Hilo show and did extremely well. At the one show Vito earned 8 points two 3 point majors as well as Group 4 this weekend. Vito is a golden pug like his mom, square body, straight back and lovely big round head like his dad. One of the features about Vito that I like best is that his noseroll is not black which makes his facial features stunning also like his mom. Sarah will be showing Vito next spring. We currently are getting his Rabies titers completed in order to show him next year on the mainland. Vito is a stunning pup who received many many compliments and lots of head turning at the recent show. Vito lives with Sarah and her husband Kevin and has recently learned to swim like a champ and romps in the woods like a bird dog. What a puggy! Jada's mom is Bonnie and Sire is Bosco. This little lady was my pick on the day she was born i think. Jada has an incredible head , is very short backed and has great "attitude". It will be interesting to see how she does in the show ring for .Jada is quite bossy and sassy with all who love her. We all love Jada of course. Jada just got two points at the Hilo Orchid Isle show which we are proud of. Our foundation dogs are 1st of all our beloved companions and secondly creating some incredible pups for the ring. We are proud of them all. Bella is bred and appears to be pregnant and happy. We are excited to announce that Bella is bred to CH. Tupelo Showboat Tu China Tu. This is a line breeding for Bella. Needless to say we are holding our breath with excitement. JUNE 8, .Bonnie appears to be pregnant and happy. We are excited about this breeding as she is bred to Ch. Saxten Shackelton which is a line breeding. I am totally stoked if Bonnie is pregnant. Fingers crossed. JUNE 11, Bella in season. Bella is fit as a fiddle and ready to go. To "whom" might she be bred too on might ask? JUNE 10, Shackie got another leg on his 1st obedience title this weekend. He is such a good boy. Also, fingers crossed, Shackie may be a daddy. Vito qualifies for Eukanuba .Lujah is sitting on 12 points and is headed for HKC show next weekend. We have our fingers crossed for this beautiful pup. Lani win a 4 point major and will go to HKC sitting on 1 major and 7 points. Shackie also got his 1st Obedience Leg. We are acceptionally proud of Shackie as he has been working very well with Terry on his Obedience training for weeks prior to this competition. Shackie is the only pug we have that competes both in conformation and obedience. Hilo Orchid Isle show. Bella Received her Grand Championship on .Shown by Brittany George. We are so proud. Photo's soon. We had a lot of fun!! Lani one of Bella' pup's from this year's breeding won 3 point. Miss Bella is 1 point from her Gr. We have our fingers crossed that she will finish this year at Windward or Hilo show. .Jada, Sara, Shen, Vito and Ruby. We owe great thanks to Kevin Woodworth for his excellent handling of this fine pup. We showed 3 pug pups today. They actually all showed very well and we are proud of each of them. Stay tuned as next weekend we have our second fun match of the season. Our sweet Shaolin's Jade Dragon aka Jada placed 2nd in breed. Was a great match for us. Many thanks to both of these folks. Shaolin's Jade Dragon aka Jada placed 3rd in breed.
Prevalence: Common Bull terriers are extremely powerful dogs. They are stocky and muscular and come in two varieties: standard and miniature sizes. The standard version reaches about 22 inches in height and a maximum of about 60 pounds 27 kilograms. The miniature version is a maximum of about 14 inches high and weighs up to about 33 pounds 15 kilograms. The most distinctive physical feature of the Bull Terrier is its head, which is egg-shaped and flat on top. The eyes are small, dark, and close-set. The ears are pointy. The body is broad and the back short and strong. Bull Terriers have a medium-length tail. The Bull Terrier's coat is short and dense and is white, black, brindle, red, fawn or tri-colored. The dogs are considered average shedders. They live about 10 to 12 years. Personality: Bull terriers are gentle, affectionate and playful with family members. They also are loyal pets that will guard the family. As with any large or tough breed, proper precautions around strangers, children, and other animals is essential. If not given enough exercise and attention from the owners, Bull terriers can be destructive. Living With: Because the breed is powerful and some members may have aggressive tendencies, Bull Terriers must be obedience trained. They must also be carefully socialized from a young age. Socialization requires frequent supervised exposure to other people and pets in the neighborhood. With proper socialization and training, Bull Terriers make great family pets. However, they probably are not a good choice for novice dog owners, nor are they generally recommended for households with other pets or irresponsible children. Bull terriers must be exercised daily in a fenced-in yard or with walks on leash and should not be permitted to run free, even if trained and socialized. Because of their stocky build, care must be taken not to overfeed as they can easily become obese. History: Bull terriers were developed in England during the 19th century. Around , a cross between the old English terrier and the bulldog produced the Bull Terrier. Later crosses to the Spanish Pointer; even later, to the white English terrier and Dalmatian, produced a stylish, tough, white dog. In the mid s, the white version of the breed, known as "white cavaliers," became a favorite pet among gentry. Crosses to the Staffordshire Bull Terrier reintroduced color around .Today, Bull Terriers are gentler than their ancestors but are still strong, fearless dogs. They are primarily family pets, but are not suitable for many families. Related Pet Care Articles. Although a playful pup sounds endearing, consider how many games of fetch or tag you want to play each day, and whether you have kids or other dogs who can stand in as playmates for the dog. Click here for more information on this characteristic Bull Terrier Overview If you remember the late s, you probably recall the Budweiser commercials featuring a Bull Terrier named Spuds Mackenzie, whose sly grin and on-screen antics turned the breed into a pop icon. Bull Terriers have larger-than-life personalities that range from intelligent and innovative to placid and loyal. Life with a Bull Terrier is always an experience. They do best with an active family who can provide them with plenty of energetic play. They also need someone who will consistently but kindly enforce the house rules. Like most terriers , Bull Terriers unneutered males in particular can be aggressive toward other animals, especially other dogs. To be well-behaved around other canines, they need early socialization : positive, supervised exposure to other dogs that begins in early puppyhood and continues throughout life. Cats and other furry animals who enter their territory should beware. Successfully training a Bull Terrier calls for patience, confident leadership, and consistency. Some cities and states have restrictions on Bull Terriers, and you should be aware of your local laws before you bring your Bull Terrier home. Bull Terrier Highlights Bull Terriers thrive in the company of their people, and should live indoors with their human family. Keep your Bull Terrier warm with a coat or sweater in winter. A weekly brushing and occasional wipe-down with a damp cloth is usually all it takes to keep them clean, although they must be brushed more frequently during twice-yearly shedding periods. The Bull Terrier needs 30 to 60 minutes of exercise, play, and mental stimulation daily. The Bull Terrier is strong-willed and can be difficult to train. They are not recommended for timid or first-time dog parents. Bull Terrier History The Bull Terrier dates to approximately and was probably created by crossing a Bulldog with the now-extinct white English Terrier. They were known as gladiators for their prowess in the dogfighting ring. In , fanciers of the bull and terrier, in particular a man named James Hinks, set about creating an all-white dog. Twelve years later, in , the Bull Terrier Club of America formed. The colored Bull Terrier was made a separate variety in , and the Miniature Bull Terrier became a separate breed in .Beloved by tourists, she was photographed more often than Rin Tin Tin, and in she was named the official greeter of Juneau. A colored Bull Terrier made history in , when Ch. The only white Bull Terrier to win the prestigious event was Ch. Haymarket Faultless in .As of , Bull Terriers ranked 64th in popularity among the most popular dog breeds registered by the American Kennel Club. Bull Terrier Size Bull Terriers come in a wide range of sizes, ranging from 50 to 70 pounds. They stand about 21 to 22 inches at the shoulder. Bull Terriers are described as courageous and full of fire. These are good traits, but they can veer into the disagreeable category if the Bull Terrier is allowed to become possessive or jealous. Without early training and socialization, they can be potentially aggressive toward other animals. With people, though, they have a sweet disposition. On the downside, they can be chewers , barkers , and tail chasers, and are often difficult to housetrain. Bull Terrier Health Bull terriers are generally healthy, but like any breed, they can have health issues. The following problems may occur in the breed: Hereditary Nephritis: This is a severe form of kidney disease found in Bull Terriers, often at an early age. Deafness: in one or both ears is common in white dogs, and some colored Bull Terriers can be deaf in one ear. All Bull Terrier puppies should undergo BAER brainstem auditory evoked response testing to ensure that their hearing is normal. Bull Terriers who are deaf in one ear can lead relatively normal lives, but puppies that are deaf in both ears require special training techniques and handling. Heart Disease : This condition is caused by defects in heart structure and function. It is occasionally found in Bull Terriers. Some cases are more serious than others and usually are indicated by the presence of a heart murmur. In some cases, a cardiac ultrasound echocardiogram may be necessary to diagnose the problem. Some Bull Terriers outgrow their murmurs, some live with them for years with no problem, and others develop heart failure. Skin Problems: Bull Terriers, especially white ones, have sensitive skin that can be prone to rashes, sores, and irritations. They may also be prone to contact or inhalant allergies, caused by a reaction to substances such as detergents or other chemicals or airborne allergens such as pollen, dust, and mildew. Provide soft, clean bedding in crates and other sleeping areas to prevent sores. Sometimes a change to a diet with few or no chemical additives can help. Other Bull Terriers need long-term treatment with antibiotics or steroids to keep skin problems under control. Spinning: This is an obsessive form of tail-chasing that usually begins at approximately 6 months of age. It can continue for hours and leave the dog with no interest in food or water. Spinning may be a type of seizure and is sometimes successfully treated with medications such as phenobarbitol, Anafranil, or Prozac. Treatment is often more successful in females than males. Lens Luxation : This is when the lens of the eye is displaced when the ligament holding it in place deteriorates. Bull Terrier Care Bull Terriers need someone at home during the day. Rawhide toys can be especially problematic. Dog-proof your home! A Bull Terrier needs half an hour to an hour of physical and mental exercise daily. Bull Terrier puppies are bouncy and into everything. These can all stress or injure the still-developing joints and ligaments. Early and consistent training is essential. You must be able to provide leadership without resorting to physical force or harsh words. B ull Terriers can be difficult to housetrain. Follow a housetraining program closely and crate-train your dog. A crate will also prevent your Bull Terrier from destroying your belongings or otherwise getting into trouble. Bull Terriers are suspicious of strangers and can be aggressive toward other animals especially dogs of the same sex and people. Take them to puppy socialization classes as early as possible, as well as to dog-friendly public places so they can get used to many different situations, people, and dogs. They should also learn to welcome visitors to your home. Bull Terrier Feeding Recommended daily amount: 4 cups of high-quality dog food daily, divided into two meals. How much your adult dog eats depends on their size, age , build, metabolism, and activity level. The quality of dog food you buy also makes a difference — the better the dog food, the further it will go toward nourishing your dog. Keep your Bull Terrier in good shape by measuring their food and feeding him twice a day rather than free feeding. First, look down at them. You should be able to see a waist. Then place your hands on their back, thumbs along the spine, with the fingers spread downward. You should be able to feel but not see their ribs without having to press hard. Bull Terriers come in two color varieties: white and colored. White Bull Terriers are solid white, with or without colored markings on the head but nowhere else on the body. Colored Bull Terriers are any color other than white or any color with white markings. Bull Terriers are easy to groom ; they need only weekly brushing with a rubber mitt or curry brush. The exception is during their twice-yearly shedding season, when daily brushing will be necessary to keep all the hair under control. Daily is better. Trim their nails once or twice a month, or as needed. If the feet need to be tidied up with trimming, the best time to do it is when you are clipping the nails. Clean them as needed with a cotton ball and a cleanser recommended by your veterinarian. Handle their paws frequently dogs are touchy about their feet and look inside their mouth and ears. Always supervise play; as with any dog, never leave a dog alone with a child, and teach children how to approach and touch dogs. Bull Terriers, especially unneutered males, can be aggressive toward dogs of the same sex, but opposite genders usually get along well. Bull Terrier Rescue Groups People sometimes adopt Bull Terriers without clear understanding of what goes into parenting one. These dogs often end up in the care of rescue groups, in need of adoption or fostering. Presumed by many to be standoffish dogs thanks to their muscular build, the affectionate bull terrier actually thrives while spending time with and getting pats and scritches from bonded humans. They aren't super interested in pleasing their parents, although they are very sweet dogs. Bull terriers are busy dogs from the time they are puppies until middle age, earning the nickname "the kid in a dog suit. Bull terriers always keep life interesting for their owners. Appearance The bull terrier has a face like no other. Their heads are long and egg-shaped, sloping down into a Roman nose and topped by pointed ears. Fun fact: they're also the only registered breed to have triangle-shaped eyes. Some can be on the smaller side at just 35 pounds, but beefier males can bulk all the way up to be pound bullies. There are also miniature bull terriers , who were recognized as a separate breed in the s and weigh less than 30 pounds. Big-boned dogs, their gait shows off their strength and agility. Their coats are made up of short, flat hairs that appear shiny and feel hard to the touch. Bull terriers can either be white— even solid white —or colored with various markings, with more than 20 different combinations. Temperament While bull terriers may seem tough and intimidating thanks to their unique looks, they are a sweet and gentle breed. Bull terriers are goofballs, the class clown of the dog world, and owners delight in their funny personalities. They love to play and get into trouble in equal measure. These extroverted pups are always happy to see you and meet other people, often feisty and excited in their greetings. Because they are full of fire and spunk, their dominant personality can be a handful. They might become easily jealous if you're paying more attention to another animal or even a human! Talk to your veterinarian if you notice any of these behaviors becoming prevalent. If you socialize your bull terrier puppy when they're young, provide loving and consistent training , and make sure he gets lots of physical and mental exercise , you won't find a more loyal or entertaining pup. These dogs benefit from spending as much time as possible with you so they can thrive and might do best with an experienced dog owner. Their love of people even extends to strangers. They are very active dogs and need companionship all day long. Leaving a bull terrier on their own is a recipe for disaster—he can easily develop separation anxiety, resulting in undesirable behaviors. One thing to know about bull terriers: they eat anything. So your home should be bull terrier-proof to keep him from snacking on things he shouldn't and avoid emergency veterinary surgery. These energetic dogs can play rough, so adding a bull terrier to a family with children needs to be considered carefully. They can be good with cats if they are socialized with them at a young age. Brushing once a week with a soft-bristle brush helps to remove dirt and loose hairs. Those signature ears do need to be regularly checked and cleaned as needed. Bull terrier nails should be kept short so they aren't uncomfortable when walking. They don't need frequent bathing —unless they've gotten into a stinky mess—and can be washed with either dry shampoo or wiped with a damp cloth. Keep in mind: their coat doesn't keep them warm in colder weather, but they don't mind donning a cute sweater or coat when the weather's a bit chilly. They will be more comfortable in warmer weather, but never leave them outside unsupervised for extended periods of time. Like all dogs, bull terriers don't sweat like humans do and need plenty of water, shady spots, and AC to keep cool. But you can skip the ice cubes! Their strength and dexterity means they are also skilled at obedience training, tracking, and agility courses—which are all great ways to challenge their energy. But go easy with puppies who are especially bouncy; high-impact activities—such as jumping on furniture, long jogs , or playing Frisbee—can damage their developing joints. They need to exercise their mind along with their body, and love the challenge of interactive toys. Because of their terrier 'tude, they put a bigger emphasis on play than work ethic. So when it comes time for any training, ensure it's fun for your bully. They respond well to positive reinforcement , so bring on the treats and toys! Independent thinkers that they are, Wooten says bull terriers can be a challenge to train, so be consistent— especially when house-training. Bull terriers do well with crate training , which helps keep them out of trouble when you can't be home with them. Health The typical bull terrier lifespan is 12—14 years, and, as with all dog breeds, there are a few health issues they can develop, according to the Bull Terrier Club of America. Hereditary nephritis is a severe form of kidney disease that can be found in bull terriers even from an early age. The disease causes the kidneys to malfunction, and often a dog suffering from this affliction will not live to be older than three. Because they have a piebald coat , bull terriers can have hearing issues ranging from partial to total deafness. They can still lead relatively normal lives with special training and handling. Their unique coat, especially for all-white bull terriers, can also lead to contact allergies and other skin issues such as rashes, sores, and irritations. Bull terriers may also suffer from heart disease , which is typically indicated by a heart murmur. Their distinctive eyes are also prone to lens luxation , which may be treatable with medication or surgery, but may also lead to eye removal. As mentioned, bull terriers are likely to deal with obsessive compulsive behaviors that manifest as spinning, pacing, or chasing their tail for hours on end if left unchecked. It may be treatable with medications such as phenobarbitol, anafranil, or Prozac for extreme cases—or, for milder cases, by simply eliminating boredom. They were considered gladiators in the dog-fighting ring, prized for their strength and tenacity. The "New Bull Terrier" first appeared at a dog show in and was shown by James Hinks, who is credited as the original bull terrier breeder. They earned the nickname "White Cavalier" thanks to their courageousness, their courtliness towards people, and their sweet disposition. The miniature bull terrier became a separate breed in .There are many notable bull terrier owners, including General George S. Perhaps the most famous bull terrier is Patsy Ann , the official greeter of Juneau, Alaska. Patsy Ann sat on the docks in Juneau during the s greeting sailors and taking photos with tourists. Her spirit lives on in Juneau thanks to a commemorative statue commissioned in .Fun Facts Spuds Mackenzie , the sly-grinning bull terrier used in Budweiser commercials in the late s, helped increase the popularity of the breed. Target decided to use a bull terrier as their official spokesdog, too. They introduced Bullsye in with the Target logo appearing as a spot on his eye—thanks to non-toxic dye. Bull terriers have also been popular in books and on the big screen. As for movies, bull terriers have appeared in Toy Story , Frankenweenie , and Next Friday to name a few. Was this page helpful? The Bull Terrier is a breed of dog in the terrier family. There is also a miniature version of this breed which is officially known as the Miniature Bull Terrier. Appearance A brindle Bull Terrier showing head profile, triangular eyes, robust and very muscular body The Bull Terrier's most recognizable feature is its head, described as 'egg-shaped head', when viewed from the front; the top of the skull is almost flat. The profile curves gently downwards from the top of the skull to the tip of the nose, which is black and bent downwards at the tip, with well-developed nostrils. The lower jaw is deep and strong. The unique triangular eyes are small, dark, and deep-set. The body is full and round, with strong, muscular shoulders. The tail is carried horizontally. They are either white, red, fawn, black, brindle, or a combination of these. A Bull Terrier has an even temperament and is amenable to discipline. Although obstinate, the breed is described by the Bull Terrier Club as particularly good with people. Although the breed has been a target of breed-specific legislation , a study in Germany did not find that Bull Terriers had any significant temperament difference from Golden Retrievers in overall temperament researches. Many Bull Terriers have a tendency to develop skin allergies. A UK breed survey puts their median lifespan at 10 years and their mean at 9 years 1 s. The bull and terriers were based on the Old English Bulldog now extinct and Old English Terriers with possible other terriers. This new breed combined the speed and dexterity of lightly built terriers with the dour tenacity of the Bulldog, which was a poor performer in most combat situations, having been bred almost exclusively for fighting bulls and bears tied to a post. Many breeders began to breed bulldogs with terriers, arguing that such a mixture enhances the quality of fighting. Despite the fact that a cross between a bulldog and a terrier was of high value, very little or nothing was done to preserve the breed in its original form. Due to the lack of breed standards—breeding was for performance, not appearance—the "bull and terrier" eventually divided into the ancestors of "Bull Terriers" and " Staffordshire Bull Terriers ", both smaller and easier to handle than the progenitor. Originally, these dogs did not yet have the now-familiar "egg face", but kept the stop in the skull profile. Hinks wanted his dogs white, and bred specifically for this. The first modern Bull Terrier is now recognized as "Lord Gladiator", from , being the first dog with no stop at all. Brindle is the preferred color, but other colors are welcome. Pete received plenty of contemporary press, having bitten a naval clerk as well as chased and bitten the French ambassador. Patton owned a Bull Terrier named Willie. When it got into a fight with Dwight D. Eisenhower 's dog, Patton apologized, saying that Willie was outranked and would be confined to quarters. Spuds MacKenzie is a fictional character used for an extensive advertising campaign marketing Bud Light beer in the late s, portrayed by a bull terrier named Honey Tree Evil Eye. The novel Hell Hound by Ken Greenhall centers around a homicidal white bull terrier named Baxter. It was adapted as the French film Baxter , in which the titular character was played by a bull terrier named Chimbot and voiced by Maxime Leroux. See also. Less - The Bull Terrier is the cavalier gladiator — a good-looking tough character. It is strongly built and muscular, longer than it is tall. Its muscle mass combined with its relatively low center of gravity make it difficult for opponents to knock it off its feet. Its distinctive head not only shows off its keen and determined expression, but also its great jaw strength. Its gait is smooth and easy. Its skin is tight, and its coat short, flat and harsh. Exuberant, comical, playful, assertive and very mischievous describes the bull terrier. It is an imaginative breed that often sees things its own way and is stubborn to the end. It needs daily physical and mental exercise lest it exercise its powerful jaws on your home. For all its tough bravado, this is an extremely sweet-natured, affectionate and devoted breed. It can be aggressive with other dogs and small animals. Later they crossed the Bulldog with the Old English Terrier, mixed with some Spanish Pointer to increase its size, which produced the Bull Terrier breed. After dog fighting was abolished, Bull Terriers were bred with the Dalmatian to produce a white colored strain, then again with the Staffordshire Bull Terrier to reintroduce color. Both the white and colored types increased in popularity as pets, and both strains remain today.
I am familiar with common and uncommon health problems they may face so when my boyfriend and I decided we were ready to adopt our own english puppy finding a reputable breeder that prioritizes health was most important to us. Erica and Mitch of Bruiser Bulldogs are just that. They are experienced, ethical and quality breeders. I was referred to them by my friend that I trust after I saw their gorgeous healthy puppy. Our Puppy Primrose is the light of our lives! Bruisers was there to assist us every step of the way. We would highly recommend Bruisers Bulldogs to anyone looking for their own happy, healthy pup! Leah H. We were lucky to have come across Bruiser Bulldogs and even more so the fact that they were near our family and hometown made it even better. We have had Clementine Callie for four months now, and she is a wonderful dog. Her personality is amazing, and I think part of it is breeding and the other part is Erika and her family lovingly raising the puppies in their home with plenty of attention and snuggles. I also was impressed that, rather than send the puppies out right at 8 weeks, Erika kept ours for a few extra weeks because she was tiny and not read to leave her mom yet. It's that care that differentiates Bruisers from other breeders. Emily R. Erica was easy to work with thru the entire process from application to adopting and now beyond as we host our new family member, Chief. Her on-call support and willingness to provide open, honest advice to all of our questions and concerns continues to be appreciated. We would highly recommend Bruiser Bulldogs to anyone looking for an English Bulldog to join their family. Elizabeth W. Lady L. They are experienced, responsive and knowledgeable about all things bulldog related. They went above and beyond for us and are truly dedicated to all of their pups! We love our little girl so much and would recommend Bruiser to anyone looking for a healthy beautiful bully. Jonathan E. Erica and Mitch are trustworthy, excellent communicators, fair, passionate, and produce the best bulldogs. We were at the top of the waiting list for months and Erica reached out every litter to see if we were finally ready for a bulldog. When we were, she was very easy to work with. Her knowledge on bulldogs is outstanding. We had many questions on the process and she always knew what was best for the puppy. We've had Penny formerly Blair for two months and she is very healthy, energetic, playful, and sweet. She is great with other people and dogs. We are so happy with our pup. When we are ready for bulldog 2, we will only consider Bruiser Bulldogs. Mitch C. Bowser was born April and is an integral part of our family. When we were first exploring English Bulldog breeders our biggest concern was the overall health of the dogs. We decided to work with Erica at Bruiser Bulldogs because we liked their focus on improving the breeds breathing abilities and the fact that the puppies are raised within her family environment before coming home with their new owners. Bowser also breaths clearly and our vet was impressed with his overall health from the moment we brought him home. All that said we know English Bulldogs have a predisposition to many health issues and that his current health can not predict the future. With that In mind its important to start with a breeder that open to answer any of your questions as Erica has ours, and that strongly believes in improving the breeds overall health profile. Adam B. My sister ended up finding Bruiser Bulldogs and we knew right away that they were the breeder for us. In September we ended up driving 9 hours to pick up two Bruiser bulldog puppies- one for my husband and I and one for my mom. Jackson and Penelope have been nothing but a joy. They are both very athletic and healthy. They are also HUGE snugglers and always want to be with you. It is an absolute pleasure having these two bullies in our lives! Erica is very knowledgeable about the breed. She is very hands on throughout the process and is just overall a kind and honest person to work with. With all that being said I cannot recommend Bruiser Bulldogs enough! Collyn C. One of the reasons we chose Bruiser Bulldogs was due to the claims about breeding for health. During our first visit at our vet's office, he told us that our pup was one of the healthiest English bulldogs he had ever seen. He is healthy, happy and social. Would recommend to anyone. Christina S. We seen our dog on their website and sent them an Email. Mitch called us and personally walked us through the process and made sure we had the right dog for our family. We couldn't be happier when we picked up our dog Ramsey, Erica made sure we had everything we needed and then some. They are truly amazing people who breed truly amazing dogs! Jim T. Little is noted in the development of its history no one knows exactly how the French bulldog came into being because very poor records were kept we know we know the most basic facts such as that there were Normandy immigrants coming from France to England that brought these dogs with them around the s. Those immigrants were lace workers that had been living in the farming communities of northern friends which is where they were a rich initially discovered but when those lace workers move to France they brought the dogs with them and had a tremendous reception of the French people because of their petite size versus other extremely strong almost big dog presents that is easily social and loyal with everybody and never disliking anyone. Variance in weight can be from pounds! This dog is active in sports which I might compare to a quarter horse. They envy a walk if possible 10 times a day, but that walk will only be bigger us for maybe 5 to 10 minutes. This difference determine the difference in pricing that you will see regardless of optimal specification they always weigh heavier on the scale than that they look because their bone structure is dense for their size. There about like years that stand to attention have become their trademark and their faces are somewhere between a pug and an English bulldog. The French bulldog can wait any were literally from 15 to 40 pounds but the breed average is from 22 to 28 pounds and standing about 1 foot tall. A fun aspect of the breed is a tremendous variation in color unlike other breeds that are more consistent. This Breed spends everything from white to Brindle to fun with spots and without and in varying shades in almost every color of the rainbow. Fad colors are including chocolate black and blue and tricolor and these have been frowned upon for years by classical breeders and registries and French Bulldogs LA clubs of America due to the in breeding that was necessary to create these colors. Overtime though we hope that because of ethics and patients that this fact will change. Brindle is the AKC definition of black but that color also varies as much is a black coffee to coffee with cream and should always include sprinkles of golden hairs. Note that eyes are meant to be dark brown and variations of this are due to fad colors which are most often reproduced in the past with in line breeding that exacerbates recessive traits and can reproduce like colored eyes again frowned upon by classical tradition traditional breeders but something that we hope to see changing in this near future. This means exactly that, it will not work for you but rather be a great companion happy to sit all day at your feet or on your lap. It is still small enough to be carried around or brought on board a plane. It loves walks albeit short ones and is sensitive to the heat so in the summertime I walk them only at night or early mornings. They cannot swim as easily as other breeds and need to be worked with in the beginning with the lifejacket as a puppy so that it can learn to swim. On occasion, some may howl like a coyote or periodically an actual true bark. But these are more rare instances. They would be a fun addition to any household, lighting up the room with their smile. Yes, they seem to smile! They are very social with all people never acting skittish, in fact the first to greet you. They behave well off the leash and it would be a common sight to see an owner walking a busy street with their dog freely at their side for they are very obedient and easy to train. They often snore though, so know this trait is common. Many doggy daycares will tell you the French bulldog is the boss dog of the pack. This may often be so but more and more French bulldogs are submissive. In fact, I, as a breeder, am breeding for this quality so as never to have a dog that you have to worry about fighting with another dog. Note that French Bulldogs do not drool unless extremely emotional and perhaps there is a dog in heat nearby otherwise primarily a dry mouth. She is a wonderful, easy girl to love and doesn't require much. The only thing she does need is someone who can keep her safe. She was not well socialized in her younger years and is scared of new things and new surroundings. Thus, she just needs a simple life. She isn't the type of dog that is going to go to dog parks or festivals, you can just leave her at home. But she's quite content playing with dogs she lives with, going in the backyard and short walks until she gets more comfortable. She's an easy dog, we just need someone who is open to learning how to keep her safe and who will follow instructions for that. She looks like a thin lab, but has a feathered tail and waves of fur down her back. She loves other dogs and enjoys going to doggy daycare occasionally, it has really helped her to come out of her shell. She was caught in 10 days the first time, but the second time took 2 months - yes, two months to catch this dog. Because of this, she needs a very special home. She follows their lead, but also plays! No kids, teenagers or even any grandkids that visit regularly. She needs an adult home that is not busy. A willingness to understand and follow instructions to keep her safe. She sleeps or relaxes the majority of the day. She loves companionship. Please allow at least 48 hours for applications to be processed missing information may slow the process, so please take your time and be thoughtful in your answers. Because we begin with a Labradoodle and a Poodle, rather than a Lab and a Poodle, our puppies are much more likely to have the non-shedding Poodle coat. A F1b Labradoodle has been back-crossed to a poodle in an effort to insure a non-shedding coat. Even though most f1b Labradoodles shed very little or not all, it is impossible to guarantee that any dog even doodles or purebred poodles will not shed at all. Hypo- means less hypothermia is having a lower than normal body temperature. No dog can be said to be completely non-allergenic. Studies have shown that doodles are less likely to cause allergies, particularly f1b doodles. The ideal is to keep as much of the Lab head shape and super-friendly personality as possible while getting the non-shedding Poodle coat as well as the dignified, less vocal characteristics of the Poodle. Mini Labradoodles are highly intelligent, affectionate, and as loving as can be. They can be trained for a myriad of dog jobs, and are quite the athletes when it comes to dog sports. Appearance and Grooming With two very different parent breeds, it can be difficult to know what each puppy will look like. Some litter pups take on more characteristics of the Poodle parent and others take after the Labrador more. Their low-shedding coat may resemble that of a Poodle : long, curly, and thick, or they may have fur that resembles that of a Labrador: short, straight, and dense with color variations of black, brown, chocolate, cream, golden, silver and white. This breed has a double coat which may require daily brushing depending on the thickness. They will also need regularly scheduled professional grooming appointments every 4 to 6 weeks. The size of Mini Labradoodles can vary quite a bit as well since they are a crossbreed of different-sized dogs. They may be smaller or larger depending on who they take after more. The typical size for these cuties is 14 to 16 inches tall with a weight of 16 to 25 pounds for a full-grown Mini Labradoodle. With both parent breeds being family-friendly, happy-go-lucky breeds, it is no surprise that this puppy will have the same fun-loving nature. Family and Companionship Perfect for families with children of all ages, the Mini Labradoodle is certain to fit in anywhere. This sweet dog will need plenty of love and attention, so staying away for long periods of time is not ideal for the overall emotional health of this breed. Because of their smaller size, they can thrive in all environments, be it a city apartment or in a rural setting with lots of lands. Keep in mind that your puppy will need lots of exercise and play so make sure you have plenty of places to let them run and sniff. Exercise Taking on the energetic tendencies of both parents, the mini Labradoodles are extremely active dogs who enjoy going for walks, running, and even swimming much like the Poodle. Like the Retriever, they love to play and retrieve things. Be prepared to keep them busy and spend at least an hour of active playtime with them each day. They can be pretty active chewers and seekers of mischief, so giving them something to play with is imperative. Training and Socialization Inheriting the intelligence of the Poodle parent will not only make this dog super trainable but also a wonderful option for a service or therapy dog. Its natural intuition makes it easily adaptable to people and places. However, it is very important to begin training the moment you bring your mini Labradoodle puppy home. You should start exposing it to new places, people, and other dogs as early as possible. Early socialization is paramount in the overall wellness of this unique breed. Boxweiler Highlights Boxweilers are mixed breed dogs. They are not purebreds like their Boxer or Rottweiler parents The main colors of the Boxweiler coats are fawn, black, brindle, white, and brown. Sometimes their coats are solid, and sometimes they have a mix of colors. These pups have short coats, though they are still moderate shedders. They are not hypoallergenic dogs. Boxweilers need at least one good half-hour- to hour-long walk per day with a few good, active play sessions and shorter walks mixed in. The Boxweiler may prefer to be mostly around adults and older kids who know how to play gently. Boxweilers can be stubborn sometimes but are highly intelligent and can be easy to house train if you are energetic and consistent with their training. They can make great guardians or watchdogs of the household. Boxweiler History The Boxweiler is believed to have been bred sometime in the s by crossing Boxers and Rottweilers together. What we do know is that both the Boxer and Rottweiler breeds have great histories. The ancestors of modern Boxers were used for many tasks, from hunting to guarding and herding cattle. This breed served as messenger dogs in World War I, carrying supplies and acting as guard and attack dogs. Rotties were often used to pull carts and served as guard dogs. Boxweilers are fairly likely to inherit many of the traits that have made their parent breeds so revered throughout history. The Rottweiler was inducted later in .Boxweiler Size As the Boxweiler is a mixed breed, there are few standards when it comes to its size. That said, as a mix between Boxer and Rottweiler parents, you can expect the Boxweiler to be on the larger side. Most weigh in at 70 to pounds and range in height from 21 to 27 inches at the shoulder. However, many can be smaller or larger than normal. Boxweiler Personality Boxweilers are very loving and loyal dogs with lively personalities. This usually means they love running around and playing games like fetch with their pet parents. Even with their high energy, they are also affectionate and love to cuddle inside the house with their human counterparts. These large pooches are working dogs and enjoy fulfilling that purpose in one way or another. That means they can make great guardians or watchdogs of the household. They will bark or alert their owners at the first sign of trouble. These dogs do best with early training to curb any unwanted bad habits. They can be stubborn sometimes but are highly intelligent and can be easy to house train if you are energetic and consistent with their training. They also tend to latch on to one family member most of all, though they can get along with others in the house. The Boxweiler may be best suited for larger families with larger homes rather than small apartments. Boxweiler Health The Boxweiler mixed breed is predisposed to some of the same conditions that the Boxer and the Rottweiler also face. While most are generally healthy, some may be prone to a few health issues, which is why it is important to maintain good care and regular veterinary checkups. Some of the more common health problems Boxweilers suffer from include: joint dysplasia. Lifespan Sociability The Boxweiler is a very active, high-energy dog whose intelligence allows for relatively easy training as long as it is done with consistency and patience. They enjoy a good cuddle as much as running after a ball and playing fetch. They are healthy dogs overall but having an understanding of some of the conditions that the parent breeds are susceptible to, will help you understand your dog as it ages. While they are not aggressive dogs, they are wary of strangers and other animals, so proper socialization as puppies is essential. The Boxweiler tends to gain weight and needs plenty of exercise. The Boxweiler will only drool depending on which parent it takes after. The Rottweiler tends to drool, whereas the Boxer does not. If the Boxweiler is more alike to the Boxer parent , it is less likely to drool, but if it takes after the Rottweiler parent, it could be a drooler. The Boxweiler may prefer to be the only pet in the household. If the Boxweiler is properly socialized as a puppy with other pets, they will accommodate and adapt well with other animals. However, the Boxweiler is a herding dog and will instinctively chase other animals, and therefore the household might benefit from keeping the Boxweiler as the only pet. If they are kept busy and not left alone for long periods, the Boxweiler will grow into a happy and well-adjusted dog that will make an excellent family pet. However, the Boxweiler would do best with older children that know how to play gently with this large dog. Children should be taught how to approach dogs in a gentle and non-threatening manner so the dog will feel comfortable and become an eager and energetic companion. The Boxweiler more than likely will have the same instincts and therefore, will do best in a home as the only pet. However, if properly socialized as a puppy, they could adapt to living with other pets, including cats. They might have a predisposition to gain weight, so following a strict schedule and not leaving food out throughout the day would work best. Coming from the Rottweiler and the Boxer, which are both working dogs, the Boxweiler needs to be kept busy with walks and play. Allowing these large dogs room to run in a yard makes them less suitable for apartments. Training should be accomplished with persistence and firmness tempered with praise and positive reinforcement. Consistent training and lots of socialization, while they are puppies, is critical. Trimming nails carefully, cleaning ears , and brushing teeth are all common grooming habits every dog needs to keep them healthy. Brushing their teeth regularly to avoid dental issues combined with frequent grooming will also help your dog to maintain its health. Minor Conditions Rottweilers might experience hypothyroidism , lower eyelid droop , cataracts and allergies. While Boxers are also susceptible to hypothyroidism, they are also prone to bowel disease and corneal erosion. Serious Conditions The Rottweiler is prone to hip dysplasia , bone cancer , heart disease and bloat or stomach dilatation. The Boxer might also experience hip dysplasia, heart disease, as well as bloat or stomach dilation like the Rottweiler, but are also susceptible to irregular heartbeat and occasional problems with spinal cord disease and brain tumors. The Boxweiler has the potential to inherit some of these health issues from its parents. Therefore, the vet will check for joint dysplasia, heart disease, bone cancer, and bloat. Male vs Female Most dog breeds have minor physical differences between male and female puppies. Like most species, the females tend to be a little lighter and smaller than the males. It is thought that females tend to be less aggressive and more affectionate than the males, but this subject is up for debate. The choice of using your dog for breeding purposes will make a difference as well between the male and the female. Most dogs become calmer and less aggressive or less energetic after surgery. The primary differences between all dogs, regardless of the sex, are based on how the puppies have been raised and socialized. Final Thoughts on the Boxweiler The Boxweiler is a beautiful, loyal, intelligent, and energetic hybrid of the Rottweiler and Boxer. A firm but kind and gentle hand is the best way to handle these large and sensitive dogs. Properly socializing them to smaller animals and children, while they are puppies, will give them the best possible outcome. Online discussions through social media or attending dog shows and contacting local and national dog clubs could provide you with further assistance. Rottweiler Boxer mix puppies What is a Boxweiler? Rottweilers are more prone to eye problems like cataracts, heart problems, gastroenteritis, hypothyroidism, and other conditions. Since both breeds have a tendency for heart problems, this should be one of the primary concerns for new Boxweiler parents. Several heart conditions are possible, but the most serious is probably Arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy. A condition that can be fatal. Weight gain is another common issue with this breed. Rottweiler Boxer mix dogs can put on weight quickly. If not exercised enough or if overfed, they can become overweight. Canine obesity can also increase the risk of other health problems, particularly relating to the heart. Some other potential health issues. These include joint dysplasia, hip dysplasia , allergies, mange, pano, cancer, heart defects, bloat, eye problems, and deafness. Are mixed breeds healthier? Some claim that pedigree, purebred breeds are superior due to their consistency and predictability. On the other side of the aisle, many breeders and fans of the crossbreed claim that there are significant benefits to designer dogs. There are some legitimate potential health issues with purebred dogs. These are often caused by years of inbreeding — which can sometimes be reduced through cross breeding. Cross breeding advocates claim that there can be some benefits to genetic diversity in dog breeds. Ultimately, it all comes down to the breeding process, the knowledge of the breeder, and the genetics of the parents. Certain cross breeds are prone to specific behavioral and health issues, but the same could be said for certain purebred dogs. The biggest consideration is the energy level of these dogs. Boxweilers need regular exercise, at least twice per day. They also should have plenty of space to move around, so a small apartment is likely not suitable for this breed. Beyond that, consider the fact that Boxweilers are prone to separation anxiety. If you work long hours and will need to leave your dog alone all day, this breed is probably not going to be the best choice. Overall, the Boxweiler is a friendly and social breed. Boxweilers are protective without being overly aggressive. They can make very good guard dogs and will not hesitate to protect your family should the need arise. Prospective Boxweiler parents should weigh the pros and cons of the breed — including potential health problems — before making their decision. An experienced breeder will know the proper techniques for breeding healthy, happy dogs. They will likely test the parents for potential health problems, which helps to reduce the risk of health concerns in the puppies. When you locate a breeder, ask to see any health certificates or test results that they have for the parents. Training should start as soon as possible to ensure good habits develop while still young; this will help prevent any unwanted behaviors from appearing later on in life. As we move on to discussing aggression levels in this crossbreed, remember how important it is to show patience when training your pup. Boxer Rottweiler — Aggression Levels When it comes to Boxer Rottweiler mixes, their aggression levels can vary greatly. It is important for owners of this breed to understand the potential risks associated with a dog that has been bred from two aggressive breeds. Although they may not be as naturally aggressive as either parent breed, there is still the possibility of them taking after one or both parents in terms of temperament and personality. With proper training and mental exercise, however, these tendencies can be managed. This includes engaging activities such as fetching games, agility courses, and interactive toys which will help keep them mentally stimulated while also helping build a strong bond between owner and pet. With patience and dedication on behalf of the owner, these furry friends can become loving members of your family despite their potentially aggressive natures. Through ongoing reinforcement and reward-based learning techniques, owners can foster an environment where even the most difficult behaviors can be addressed in an effective manner. From here we turn our attention toward another aspect of Boxer Rottweiler mixes — appearance and features. The Boxer Rottweiler mix is a medium-sized dog with an average height of 20 to 24 inches and a weight of between 50 and 90 lbs. Its coat can range from short and smooth to longer, denser fur depending on which parent breed provides more of its genetic makeup. Its dense coat will protect it from cold temperatures so even during winter months it enjoys outdoor activities. This pup needs daily physical activity and mental stimulation to keep them healthy and happy. Going for regular walks around the neighborhood is a great way to start exercising your pup. Taking part in agility classes or teaching new tricks are some easy ways to give your furry friend the mental stimulation they need while having fun at the same time! The Boxer Rottweiler mix is an intelligent breed, and it requires mental stimulation throughout the day. This could mean playing games like hide-and-seek or fetch with your pup. You can also try teaching new tricks or commands using positive reinforcement techniques such as treats and praise. This breed loves spending time with its owners and wants to please them at all costs. Socialization is just as important since this will help your pup learn how to interact with other people and animals without becoming overly aggressive or fearful. With proper guidance from you, these pups can grow into loving companions who bring joy and laughter into your home. To ensure success during training sessions, always stay patient and consistent while implementing rewards for good behavior. Your pup may take some time before truly understanding what you expect from them, but eventually, they will comprehend the rules of your household better if taught properly right away. Moving forward, socializing and providing ample amounts of mental stimulation will further strengthen the bond between you and your Boxer Rottweiler mix companion! Training And Socialization With the right mental stimulation, training, and socialization are just as important for a Boxer-Rottweiler mix. An active owner who is willing to give their pup plenty of exercise and companionship will be essential in helping them develop healthy habits. If done correctly, this breed can learn basic commands very quickly; however, patience is required when teaching advanced behaviors like agility or tracking. Being bred from two highly active breeds means that good physical outlets must be found to keep your Boxer-Rottie mix happy and healthy. Taking long walks, hikes or even swimming can help fulfill their natural desire to explore new areas while getting enough exercise at the same time. Additionally, engaging games such as fetch or tug-of-war provide quality bonding time while stimulating their minds. With consistent training and socialization plus lots of love and attention, these pooches have the potential to become excellent family pets! It may be argued that mixed breeds are not as intelligent as purebred canines, but this is simply not true. In addition to being bright and capable, these pups also benefit from having two distinct genetic pools which serve to amplify their natural traits — allowing for more diverse behaviors than would otherwise be possible in one breed alone. This means that your pet will likely develop into an individual with unique abilities, quirks, and preferences! These dogs are fiercely loyal and protective of their families when it comes to defending them against danger or perceived threats. When raised properly these crossbreeds make great pets; however, without proper training early on, destructive behavior could become an issue as well. It is important to ensure that you have enough time to devote to consistent training and socializing exercises starting from puppyhood until adulthood. By providing adequate physical activity and quality playtime each day along with regular visits to the vet, owners will find themselves rewarded with a devoted companion who will love them unconditionally. This makes the extra effort worth it! Barking Tendencies When it comes to barking tendencies, a Boxer Rottweiler mix can be both a blessing and a curse. This beloved breed is known for being full of energy, which definitely shows itself in its bark! But how loud are they? Barking level: Boxer Rottweiler mixes are considered medium-to-high barkers; while they may not constantly yodel throughout the day, their enthusiasm will certainly show when something exciting happens or if someone approaches the house. Speech pattern: They tend to have short barks with a distinctive growl underneath — this combination makes them sound quite intimidating at times! Instincts: Being part Rottweiler, these dogs have strong protective instincts that often come out through excessive barking. That said, proper training can help mitigate this issue. Activity needs: As energy breeds, Boxer Rottweilers need plenty of daily exercise in order to stay happy and healthy — an hour each day should do the trick. While some owners find themselves frustrated by the amount of noise their pup makes, others simply embrace it as part of having such lively canine companions around. No matter your stance on barking, knowing what to expect ahead of time will make life much easier down the line. Drooling Potential Although some breeds are known to be slobbery and prone to frequent or excessive salivating, this hybrid is typically not one of them. Generally speaking, they do not tend to drool much at all, as their mouths close tightly when relaxed. This can make them great house pets in terms of cleanliness around furniture and floors — but keep in mind that no two dogs are identical! It is important to note that if your Boxer Rottweiler mix has any hip dysplasia issues, then it may have an increased tendency to drool due to pain caused by movement or lack thereof. If you notice more than normal saliva production coming from your pet, took for signs of discomfort like limping or favoring a certain side. If you find any cause for concern with regard to health, take them to see a vet immediately. When it comes to Boxer-Rottweiler mixes and children, the answer is generally yes. These dogs can be incredibly loving family members when they are socialized early on with kids. That being said, they do require a bit of extra supervision because of their size and strength. Early socialization is key for this breed so look into puppy classes or similar activities before bringing your pup home. This breed needs plenty of exercise and activity in order to stay healthy; daily walks plus mental stimulation like puzzle toys or trick training are essential. Overall, Boxer-Rottweiler mixes can make very good companions for households with children provided there is proper supervision and care given by the owners. With patience and dedication, these dogs can fit right in with any family dynamic — making everyone happy! Boxer-Rottweiler mixes make loyal and loving family pets. As long as they are properly trained and socialized from an early age, they can get along well with other dogs. In addition to proper training and supervision, providing plenty of mental stimulation for your pup will also help him stay calm when interacting with others. With the right amount of love, care, exercise, and attention these dogs provide to their owners in return; they make great companions for those looking for a loyal canine companion who loves being part of the family dynamic. The Boxer Rottweiler mix is a popular dog breed, so grooming needs should be considered when determining whether this pet would be the right fit for you. The good news is that they have low-shedding coats and are relatively easy to groom. However, regular brushing sessions are still required in order to keep their coat healthy and prevent any tangles or mats from forming. This hybrid breed sports a short-haired coat with lots of volume which gives off an eye-catching look but also means oil accumulation on the skin may occur faster if not taken care of properly. Moving onto nutrition and feeding. A high-quality dry kibble is generally the preferred choice for this breed, but you can also add some fresh ingredients like brown rice or vegetables in moderation. When selecting food for your puppy, look for one with at least 18 percent protein content from animal sources. You should also choose an age-appropriate formula specifically designed for large breeds since these dogs grow quickly and need extra calories during this period of rapid development. Lastly, make sure any treats you give your dog are low in fat and sugar — try something natural like freeze-dried liver instead! Nutrition plays an integral role in the well-being of all living creatures, especially those adorable Boxer Rottweiler mixes! Health Problems The Boxer Rottweiler mix can inherit health issues from either or both of their parent breeds. Boxers are prone to certain health problems such as heart issues, hip dysplasia, and certain cancers. Whereas Rottweilers are prone to hip dysplasia, certain cancers, and eye problems. Additionally, responsible breeders should screen their dogs for any genetic health issues and provide documentation of those screenings to potential puppy buyers. The Boxer we know today was developed in the late 19th century when a Munich man named Georg Alt bred a brindle-colored female Bullenbeisser named Flora with a local dog of unknown origin. Schecken was then bred to an English Bulldog named Tom to produce a dog named Flocki, who became the first Boxer to be entered in the German Stud Book after winning at a Munich show that had a special event for Boxers. One of her pups was a white female named Meta von der Passage, considered to be the mother of the Boxer breed, even though photographs of her show that she bore little resemblance to the modern Boxer. Boxer puppies with good temperaments are curious, playful, and open to approaching and being held by people. Socialization, early exposure to diverse experiences, people, and places, is crucial to ensure they grow up as well-rounded, friendly dogs. Enrolling them in puppy kindergarten classes and regular interactions with visitors, neighbors, and various environments help develop their social skills. Boxer Health Boxers are generally a healthy breed, but like all dogs, they have certain health conditions to be aware of. Here are some conditions to watch out for, along with precautions: Cancer : Boxers are prone to mast cell tumors, lymphoma, and brain tumors. White Boxers with excessive white markings can get sunburned and may develop skin cancer. Apply sunscreen to their ears, nose, and coat when they go outdoors. This condition can lead to fainting and sudden death. A veterinary cardiologist can diagnose it after detecting a heart murmur. Affected dogs should not be bred. Boxer cardiomyopathy BCM : An inherited condition causing an irregular heartbeat due to an electrical conduction disorder. It can result in weakness, collapse, or sudden death. Detection is challenging, leading to unexpected fatalities. Dogs showing signs of this condition should not be bred. While some dogs show signs of pain and lameness, others may not exhibit discomfort. X-ray screening helps detect hip dysplasia, and affected dogs should not be bred. Hypothyroidism : Caused by a deficiency of thyroid hormone, leading to infertility, obesity, mental dullness, and lack of energy. It can be managed with daily thyroid replacement pills. Corneal Dystrophy : Non-inflammatory eye diseases inherited in Boxers, affecting one or more corneal layers, causing opaque areas in the eyes. A weakened immune system can lead to demodectic mange, resulting in localized or generalized skin issues. Gastric dilatation-volvulus GDV , also called Bloat or Torsion : A life-threatening condition more common in deep-chested dogs like Boxers. Feeding habits and exercise patterns can contribute to GDV. Immediate medical attention is crucial. Allergies : Boxers are prone to both environmental and food-related allergies. Itchy, scaly skin should be examined by a vet. Responsible breeding is essential to reduce the risk of deafness. Boxer Care Boxers are indoor dogs due to their short noses and coats, making them unsuitable for outdoor living. However, they enjoy playing in a fenced yard. Engage them in play or walk them twice daily for at least half an hour to keep their muscles toned and their energy satisfied. Activities like fetch, long walks, or dog sports like agility and flyball are great options. Adequate exercise ensures good behavior—a tired Boxer is a well-behaved Boxer. Training is crucial for Boxers, as their size and strength can inadvertently harm people. Their temperament, being happy and excitable, requires early and consistent training using firm, fair methods with positive reinforcement through praise, play, and food rewards. Be consistent to avoid pushing boundaries. Settle them down before training class with a walk or play session for better focus. Housetraining requires patience; some Boxers are trained by four months, while others take longer. Regular potty breaks and praising them outdoors are essential. Crate training is recommended for their successful training. Boxer Feeding For an ideal Boxer diet , choose high-quality food suited for medium-sized breeds with high energy. Optimize their chances for a long, healthy life by providing proper nutrition. To prevent weight gain, adhere to a regular feeding schedule with two meals per day. Limit treats and avoid leaving food out all day. Consult your vet for personalized recommendations based on factors like weight, energy levels, and overall health. Boxer Coat Color And Grooming Boxers boast a sleek, short coat with tight skin, accentuating their athletic bodies. They come in fawn or brindle colors, occasionally with white markings. Fawn ranges from light tan to mahogany, while brindle displays striking black stripes on a fawn background. White markings should not cover more than one-third of the coat, and excessive white is discouraged due to potential health issues like skin cancer and deafness. They lack the gene for a solid black coat, so black Boxers are not seen. Bathing should be done as needed. Maintaining dental hygiene and nail care are essential. Regularly brushing their teeth prevents periodontal disease, and trimming nails every few weeks keeps their feet in good condition. Starting grooming routines early in puppyhood helps them become accustomed to the process, ensuring positive veterinary exams and handling as adults. Regular grooming also provides an opportunity to check for any potential health issues, such as sores, rashes, or signs of infection, promoting early detection and care. Boxer Children And Other Pets Boxers are fond of kids and make excellent playmates for active older children. However, their rambunctious nature may be too much for toddlers, possibly causing accidental knocks during play. Never leave a dog unsupervised with a child. With proper socialization, Boxers can also get along well with other dogs and cats, particularly if raised together. Boxer Rescue Groups Boxers are often purchased without any clear understanding of what goes into owning one. There are many Boxers in need of adoption and or fostering. There are a number of rescues that we have not listed. Many can be found with a quick internet search. They have a great sense of humor and are quite cuddly, considering their stocky selves to be right at home on your lap—even when they reach up to 80 pounds! They love their people, they love to please, and are extremely intelligent and loyal," says breeder Marc Hatten, owner of Mountain Crest Boxers in Huson, Mont. Boxers have a short, glossy coat —usually a fawn, brindle, or white color —that's soft to the touch, often with flecks of white across the chest, face, and paws. His square head is a unique feature, lifted high above a strong back and tapered hindquarters. Most boxers have broad, black faces, also known as masks. Their ears create a floppy frame around their masks, although some dog owners have traditionally cropped the ears so they stand up. Though this is controversial; according to the American Veterinary Medical Association , cropping is almost always done for cosmetic reasons and has no proven health benefits. Don't let the downward frown of the jowls fool you—they're happy dogs! Because boxers weigh between 50—80 pounds and top off at nearly 2 feet high at the shoulder, they're considered medium- to large-sized dogs. Temperament While your boxer is a puppy, introduce him to as many adults, children, and other pets as you can so he develops strong connections and learns good manners. Boxers can be suspicious around new people and animals, so the earlier they interact with other pets and families at a dog park or in the neighborhood, the better. A boxer dog's temperament is naturally friendly and fun without being overly jumpy, barky, or excitable—once they graduate from their awkward puppy phase, that is! They reach full maturity in about three years, which is longer than other dog breeds. So positive reinforcement training is a must to help properly channel a young boxer's abundant energy. Fortunately, they're easy to train and eager to please, so they respond well to cues and leash training. Boxers dislike routine, so teaching them new tricks from time to time keeps their curious minds engaged. Hatten recommends two essential reasons for crate training boxer puppies : to curb undesirable habits caused by boredom and to provide a sense of security. This provides a safe retreat as he adjusts to new people and surroundings, also referred to as a "decompression period. Some experts recommend that the crate—with door open—be placed in an area where your new companion can easily see you and approach for reassurance whenever he needs to, reinforcing the new bond. Ask your veterinarian or a certified trainer for more tips to ease your boxer into the family. Living Needs Owning a boxer means you want a dog that can keep up with your lifestyle and be a true canine friend. They wouldn't be well-suited to an individual or family that couldn't provide these basic activities and socialization aspects. It's not unusual for boxers to need at least 30 minutes—or more—of exercise and dedicated play each day. Because of their dutiful personalities and intelligence, they've been trained to work in K9 units with police, as messengers during WWII, cattle wranglers, and guides for people with visual impairments. So with this type of energy and attention to detail, it's no wonder they thrive with people who are active in the great outdoors and enjoy running , hiking , camping , enjoying family outings in the park, working on farms, and exploring other environments that provide healthy engagement. American boxer dogs have lean, muscular bodies designed for movement and short, easy-care coats, so they're ready to go when you are. A mature boxer can also be a trusty and loyal companion for an apartment dweller or senior citizen who enjoys daily walks and has a fenced-in yard or accessible park area that allows for plenty of fetch time. Care Clean your boxer's teeth every day if possible to prevent tartar buildup. Fortunately, a specific doggie toothbrush and toothpaste makes this an easy task. Ask your veterinarian for tips. Sparkling teeth and healthy gums also help reduce drooling. Boxers don't drool as much as other breeds, but slobber can happen regularly depending on the size and shape of your dog's nose and jaw. Keep his coat sleek and shiny by brushing him a couple of times a week with a hound glove or rubber curry-brush. They don't shed a lot , but regular brushing helps control any fur that does fly. Because boxers are generally clean, they only need a bath about once a month, and that's a good time to trim their nails and clean their ears , too. Some boxer dogs have deeper facial folds than others, so you might need to wipe these clean with a damp washcloth, especially after a vigorous romp outside nosing through dirt. Health Because boxers have short coats, they often need sweaters or jackets to protect them in cold weather. They're also more sensitive to hot temperatures. They don't sweat , and their snub noses and fleshy mouths can't provide adequate cooling from panting like other dogs. So if it's warm out, time walks in the early morning or late evening when the sun isn't at its hottest. If you notice your boxer is a bit overheated , apply chilled water to his ears, belly, and genitals, where blood vessels are closer to the skin. Because they're so playful, they might also enjoy a quick cool down by frolicking in a small wading pool placed in a shady backyard spot. According to Upstate Veterinary Specialities , particular boxer health problems include cardiomyopathy—specifically, arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy ARVC , which appears in some dogs 5—7 years old. This is a genetic disease that occurs in nearly 40 percent of boxers. The heart muscle is gradually replaced by fibrous, fatty tissue, and causes an irregular heartbeat. Symptoms of ARVC include fainting, shortness of breath, and difficulty exercising. Unfortunately, some dogs don't present any symptoms of ARVC at all, and may die suddenly because of it. According to the American Boxer Club ABC , other potential medical conditions include hip dysplasia , degenerative myelopathy—a progressive disease that affects the hindquarters and spinal cord— thyroid issues , and tumors. When you're looking for a boxer puppy, ask specific testing questions of your breeder. In the 19th century, German and Belgian breeders created bullenbeissers from other dogs of that line, including the mastiff and English bulldog , and used them as large game hunters and for cattle control. Further refinement of that breed revealed a sleeker type of dog—the boxer. Some canine historians believe the name boxer comes from a German reference for the bullenbeisser's role in slaughterhouses—boxl—while others say it describes how the dogs use their front paws in play. The American Kennel Club officially recognized the boxer breed in .A boxer named Sigurd was born in and sold to a California kennel when he was 5 years old, according to the ABC. He and his offspring were the first boxers in the U. Fun Facts American boxer dogs are known for their goofy personalities. They also have a special wiggle frequently referred to as a "kidney bean"—they curve into a semi-circle shape and spin around when really excited! Boxers are favorite companions of many famous folks. Actress Jennifer Aniston, who usually has at least two or three pooch pals, adopted a pit bull-boxer mix in named Sophie. Actress Jessica Biel, along with pop music sensation husband Justin Timberlake, have frequently been snapped by paparazzi while on walks with their boxers, Buckley and Brennan. Was this page helpful? Further information: Bullenbeisser Friedrich Robert and his boxer, The Boxer is a hunting mastiff developed in Germany in the late 19th century from the now extinct Bullenbeisser , a dog of English Mastiff descent, and Bulldogs brought in from Great Britain. Its task was to seize the prey and hold it until the hunters arrived. In later years, faster dogs were favored and a smaller Bullenbeisser was bred in Brabant , in northern Belgium. The Brabanter Bullenbeisser is generally accepted as being a direct ancestor of today's Boxer. The club went on to publish the first Boxer breed standard in , a detailed document that has not been changed much since. During World War I , the Boxer was co-opted for military work, acting as a valuable messenger dog, pack carrier, attack dog , and guard dog. Taken home by returning soldiers, the dog was introduced to a wider audience and soon became a favorite as a companion, a show dog, and a guard dog. Boxer early genealogy chart Flocki, the first Boxer German citizen George Alt, a Munich resident, mated a brindle-colored female dog imported from France named Flora with a local dog of unknown ancestry, known simply as "Boxer", resulting in a fawn-and-white male, named Lechner's Box after its owner. This dog was mated with his own dam, Flora, and one of his offspring was a female called Alt's Schecken. George Alt mated Schecken with a Bulldog named Dr. Flocki was the first Boxer to enter the German Stud Book after winning the aforementioned show for St. Bernards in Munich , which was the first event to have a class specific for Boxers. Blanka von Angertor, Flocki's sister, was even more influential when mated with Piccolo von Angertor Lechner's Box grandson to produce the predominantly white particolored female dog Meta von der Passage, which, even bearing little resemblance with the modern Boxer standard early photographs depict her as too long, weak-backed, and down-faced , is considered the mother of the breed. Our great line of sires all trace directly back to this female. She was a substantially built, low to the ground, brindle and white particolor, lacking in underjaw and exceedingly lippy. As a producing female, few in any breed can match her record. She consistently whelped puppies of marvelous type and rare quality. Those of her offspring sired by Flock St. Salvator and Wotan dominate all present-day pedigrees. Combined with Wotan and Mirzl children, they made the Boxer. Breed name[ edit ] The name "Boxer" is supposedly derived from the breed's tendency to play by standing on its hind legs and " boxing " with its front paws. Brace's Pet Owner's Guide to the Boxer, this theory is the least plausible explanation. At that time, the spelling "baxer" equalled "boxer". Both the verb boxen [English "to box, to punch, to jab"] and the noun Boxer were common German words as early as the late 18th century. The term Boxl, also written Buxn or Buchsen in the Bavarian dialect, means "short leather trousers" or "underwear". The very similar-sounding term Boxerl, also from the Bavarian dialect, is an endearing term for Boxer. These dogs were the result from mixes of Bullenbeisser and other similar breeds. Bier beer probably refers to the Biergarten, the typical Munich beer garden, an open-air restaurant where people used to take their dogs along. The nickname "Deutscher Boxer" was derived from Bierboxer and Boxer could also be a corruption of the former or a contraction of the latter. This seems improbable. Any such action would likely result in a badly bitten if not broken leg. On the other hand, a German breeder of 40 years' experience states positively that the Boxer does not use his feet, except to try to extinguish a small flame such as a burning match. But a Boxer does box with his head. He will hit not bite a cat with his muzzle hard enough to knock it out and he will box a ball with his nose. Or perhaps, since the German dictionary translates Boxer as "prize-fighter", the name was bestowed in appreciation of the fighting qualities of the breed rather than its technique. Boxer is also the name of a dog owned by John Peerybingle, the main character in the best-selling book The Cricket on the Hearth by Charles Dickens , which is evidence that "Boxer" was commonly used as a dog name by the early 19th century, before the establishment of the breed by the end of that same century. An emerging health concern among boxers is Boxer Juvenile Kidney Disease JKD , where the kidneys do not develop normally during gestation and leads to chronic renal failure. There is strong evidence to suggest JKD is an inherited condition in boxers with research being undertaken by the University of Ohio to determine the gene mutation, as well as other work separately by the UK Boxer Breeder Council. Mortality due to infection increases significantly with increases in inbreeding. The breed is particularly predisposed to mast cell tumours, a cancer of the immune system. Because of their brachycephalic heads, they do not do well with high heat or humidity, and common sense should prevail when exercising a Boxer in these conditions. See also: Dog food Boxers need plenty of exercise, which means their diet should be high in quality calories. The main source of these calories should be lean animal protein, which include lean chicken, turkey, lamb, and fish. They sometimes appear at dog agility or dog obedience trials and flyball events. These strong and intelligent animals have also been used as service dogs, guide dogs for the blind, therapy dogs, police dogs in K9 units, and occasionally herding cattle or sheep. The versatility of Boxers was recognized early on by the military, which has used them as valuable messenger dogs, pack carriers, and attack and guard dogs in times of war. Animals such as rodents , ducks , chickens and other farm birds may be too tempting, however, they can be taught to "leave it" but it is still not recommended they be left alone with them. It has been said that the name Boxer came from the way the Boxer likes to use his front paws for just about everything. If you have ever watched a Boxer go about his business you may have noticed the way he paws at his toys, food bowl and you for that matter, in a very playful cat-like way. While participating the sport of Schutzhund, Boxers are known to jump up and use their front paws as if they are boxing. They are very clownish and playful.
