They display slightly smaller curls than some pups, but it is still not a tight curly fleece. As adults, they will have a coat similar to Tilly, their mom. This coat is easy to care for, does not mat easily, and is easy to brush out regularly. The first two pups pictured have a different dad, they are out of Riley, and the other four are from Sam. Also, note that Riley's pups have a rose nose, and the others have a black nose. These two display tight fleece. Keep short for easy management, or brush regularly to avoid mattes. The first pup had a slightly curlier coat than the others and was fluffier as an adult. You can also see the rose nose on the caramel pup 3 versus the black nose on the apricot pup 6. The black pups range in colors; the first black Australian labradoodle puppy is solid but already showing signs of silver showing through around his nose and will likely silver out as he matures. The other two black pups are phantom or sable, with adorable brown eyebrows—two caramel pups with rose noses and one apricot pup with a black nose. You can see three of each type in this litter. The pups in positions 1, 3, and 6 are tight curls, and the other three are loose. An equal distribution of rose noses, 3 rose and three black. Gypsy makes a wide range of sizes in her litter. Life Span Did You Know? The Boxer is one of the most popular dog breeds in the United States. It has been recognized by the AKC since .Although the Boxer dog breed originated in Germany, their ancient ancestry can be traced back to the Assyrian empire war dogs of BC. The modern Boxer breed we know and love today was originally developed in Germany in the late s. English-bred Bulldogs and the Bullenbesiier were crossed to create an energetic and agile hunting dog to chase wild game. The Boxer is a popular family companion and a versatile working dog. As a member of the Working Group, Boxers can be found competing in dog sports like agility, obedience, and herding. They also make great service and assistance dogs, as well as therapy dogs, and can be found working as search and rescue dogs, drug detection dogs, police dogs, and military dogs. The Boxer is a muscular and energetic dog that tends to have a happy, friendly disposition. They bond closely with their families and tend to get along well with children and other dogs. They can even do well with other pets despite their high prey drive if they are socialized and trained with them. As long as they are well-socialized, Boxers are generally upbeat, playful, and friendly. Although they have a natural instinct to protect their family from unwanted visitors, they do tend to warm up once introduced and are happy to make a new friend. They can be prone to barking a lot if you do not work on socialization and training your dog to stop barking early on. Boxers can be highly adaptable dogs. Although they have a lot of energy and are better suited to homes with yards where they can run, they can adapt to apartment living as long as they get the daily exercise, attention, and mental stimulation they need. As with any non-arctic dog breed, they are sensitive to very cold temperatures. Boxers are also a brachycephalic breed, which means they are even more sensitive to heat than other dogs. A Boxer is also one of the most affectionate dog breeds. Because they bond so closely with their families and get bored easily, they should not be left alone for long periods of time. Potential health conditions to be aware of in a Boxer include hip dysplasia, degenerative myelopathy, thyroid issues , and heart conditions like aortic stenosis and cardiomyopathy. Good breeding practices make a big difference and reputable breeders will screen their dogs to avoid passing preventable issues to puppies. So, make sure you are asking the breeder about the health and genetic history of the parents and about any health tests that have been done. Boxers are intelligent dogs that are eager to please their owners. Despite their energetic personality, they are one of the best dog breeds for first-time owners and are highly trainable dogs. They tend to excel at almost any task put before them! Because of their open, friendly nature and high energy, they have a tendency to jump up at people in excitement and playfulness. Since they grow into powerful dogs, you will want to make sure you train your dog not to jump up. Boxers have smooth and short coats that will shed a little year-round and require minimal grooming. A brush-down once or twice a week and the occasional bath as needed will keep their short coat healthy and looking great. Nail trims once or twice a month are usually enough to keep nails from growing too long. Checking ears weekly and carefully cleaning as needed can help prevent ear infections. Checking and wiping their facial wrinkles weekly or a few times a week if your dog is prone to getting into things can help keep their wrinkles clean and free of irritation. Dental diseases, like gum disease, are the most common health issues in older dogs because dental care is often overlooked; and, it can lead to other serious health issues. Brushing daily, plus cleanings at the vet when needed, is ideal. The Boxer is a high-energy dog breed that needs plenty of daily exercise to stay happy and healthy. Due to their high prey drive and urge to chase, they should only be let off-leash in secure areas. Boxers tend to get bored with repetition, are excellent problem solvers, and are naturally exuberant. A fully-grown Boxer usually stands inches tall at the shoulder and weighs pounds. Boxers generally live years on average. In Germany, the Boxer was one of the first dog breeds chosen for police training. Featured Boxer Article. Boxer Description The Boxer has a compact and powerful body. Their head is proportionate with the body and has a short muzzle with an underbite. The tail is set high and typically docked. Their coat is short, smooth, and comes in multiple colors including fawn, tan, brindle, mahogany, and black and often with white markings. Boxers also come in a white coat, but some clubs will not register them. Discover more about our Boxer puppies for sale below and see why they are one of the most popular breeds in the U. Disposition and Temperament Boxers are happy, playful, curious, and energetic. So much so that many remain extremely fit and athletic into their old age. They are very intelligent, eager, quick to learn and known to be a good breed for competitive obedience. Boxers bond closely with their family and are loyal and affectionate. In fact, they are known to get along well with children. A properly socialized Boxer will get along with dogs and other household pets, such as cats, but small animals such as rodents or birds may be too tempting. Being energetic and playful, the Boxer can become boisterous and jump on people without proper training and leadership. Boxers need to go on a daily walk and get daily mental and physical exercise. Without it, they can become stressed out. You should start training your Boxer while it is a puppy: Boxers do best with dominant owners who can be firm, consistent and committed. You need to establish yourself as the leader of the pack with this dog breed. Owners who do not establish dominance often find their dogs to be stubborn or demanding which can hamper the owner-pet relationship. Living Conditions As for living arrangements, they can be fine in an apartment if sufficiently exercised even though they are active indoors, but Boxers really do best with an average-sized yard. They are also temperature sensitive, overheating easily and chilling quickly. Boxers have a natural tendency to protect their owners and home, and although visitors who the dog recognizes are not seen as a threat, will protect their owners if they sense danger. Boxers are courageous which makes them great watchdogs and will even restrain intruders. It is important to know Boxer puppies require human leadership and need to be taught not to be boisterous or jump up on people. It requires very little grooming. Brush it with a rubber curry brush once or twice a week to keep it looking good. The Boxer tends to be a clean breed only occasionally needing a bath. Origin The name Boxer is thought to come from the way they use their front paws for just about everything; pawing at its food bowls, toys, and even its owner in a playful way. The Boxer was developed in Germany in the 19th century and its ancestors were two German mastiff-type breeds. They were later bred with the ancestors of the Mastiff and Bulldog. Boxers were first used for dog-fighting, bull-baiting, cart pulling, cattle dogs, rounding up livestock, and to catch and pin wild boar and bison until hunters could arrive. Later they became popular theater and circus dogs. There are two types of Boxers: the German and the American Boxer. German Boxers have bigger heads and are generally more muscular than American Boxers. See store for details on a puppy. The American Canine Association, Inc. The American Canine Registry.

However, as they get more comfortable around people, they can become very friendly and affectionate. Children are one of the best reasons to own an English Bulldog as their fun and playful little dogs. These include dental problems, allergies, vertigo, and vision problems. The following are some of the essential canine health issues that can affect a Bulldog mix. Hip Dysplasia This is a condition in which the ball and socket joint of the hind leg bones do not fit together snugly. This can lead to hip pain, arthritis, and reduced mobility. It mainly affects one eye in about a third of the cases and usually starts from six months to four years. A tumor of the red blood cells, called a hemangiosarcoma, usually occurs on the spleen or heart. Other cancers that occur less often are lymphosarcoma, mesothelioma, neuroblastoma, osteosarcoma, and mastocytosis. Bone cancer is rare but highly malignant. Skin Allergies Skin allergies such as atopy, contact dermatitis, and seborrhea can affect a Bulldog mix. Other skin problems that may not be directly related to allergy include demodicosis, mange or other parasitic infestations, and ichthyosis. Patellar Luxation Patellar luxation, or knee dislocation, can be a severe ailment for a Bulldog mix. The patella is usually more mobile in small dog breeds and less mobile in large dog breeds, but it is not as mobile as it should be in Bulldog mixes. Heart Disease Heart disease is a big concern for Bulldogs and the number one cause of death in this breed. The high blood pressure found in bulldogs can often lead to heart failure, and it is important to be proactive about this concern. Be sure to follow some tips in this article to find a reputable dog breeder. It is always best to call them in advance to see if they have any puppies or dogs available who fit your desired breed or breed mix. Facebook has many breed groups that allow people to publicize their business, so it is beneficial to be a member of these groups when looking for a specific breeder. You should also check for breeders in local pet supply stores or kennels. These traits make them great for apartment living or smaller homes. They are also suitable for ownership by elderly owners and those with limited mobility. Brush the coat only when it is dirty. Little to no brushing is needed during the first two years of its life. This will keep your dog happy and out of trouble with its nails, teeth, and skin. Excessive brushing can cause bald spots in high traffic areas. If full-face wrinkles develop, it is possible to have them surgically removed. Frequent Baths The Bulldog mix will need frequent baths and nail clipping to avoid the buildup of dirt and grime in its fur. It is important to sterilize the nails when clipping to avoid disease. Exercise A Bulldog mix will need daily walks. You will have to take it on daily walks. The walks should be in some form of the harness or lead so that the dog cannot move too quickly, run away or jump away as this could lead to injury or shock. Fur And Coat Shave Puppy coat cut during the first week may be easier to manage while growing into their adult coat. English bulldog mix has a short, smooth and fine coat that sheds very little. This specific breed needs little grooming to keep its hair looking healthy. Otherwise, you may have a dog that escapes regularly and ends up running away from home. They should be cared for in pretty much the same ways as any other breed of dog at home. Caring for them involves having your pet spend time in your lap while you are watching TV or taking them for daily walks outside to freshen up their breath. They love chasing and catching toys and enjoy playing fetch with you or taking a recreational jog through it. It would help if you were keen as many French Bulldogs and English Bulldogs like to get into trouble around water for fun and swimming. Try keeping their toy away from water sources. The average lifespan of the two dogs is 11 years. However, some have been known to live up to 15 years old. You should not just look for any vet in your area for this dog breed because different cities require different types of vaccinations and blood tests. Speaking of vaccinations and blood tests, you should take your pet to the vet for several reasons. Among them are pre-breeding vaccinations and rabies vaccinations. You should ensure your pet receives an annual checkup which involves medical tests for their heart ultrasound , hips, thyroid levels, and eyesight. Neutering is recommended for most breeds of dogs for both health reasons and behavioral ones. Spaying or neutering is always recommended for French Bulldogs and English Bulldogs as they tend to have more health problems when having puppies. Grooming When it comes to grooming, the longer coats of English Bulldogs and French Bulldogs will require a lot more care than other breeds of dogs. Brushing them out on a daily basis is necessary, along with frequent baths to keep their coat smooth and clean. Their nails will also need trimming every month to avoid any injuries from sharp nails and ear cleaning every couple of weeks to prevent any infections. They both have been known to shed more than other dogs and require weekly brushing to keep from becoming overgrown. Both French and English bulldogs are considered moderately intelligent as a breed. Both French and English bulldogs are very loyal. Both French and English bulldogs have some health issues that they are predisposed to. Both breeds tend to have a similar temperament. They are generally peaceful dogs who, despite their intelligence, can be easily controlled. The French bulldogs tend to be more compact with larger, more erect ears than English Bulldogs. The English Bulldog can come in virtually any color and pattern. However, the French Bulldog is more limited to browns, tan, and fawns. Although, there have been a lot of new color variations emerging like 4. French bulldogs tend to be more outgoing and docile, while the English Bulldog tends to be a little more independent, streetwise, and sometimes water-wise. This might be a harder to find hybrid dog mix but there are some breeders breeding them. They are classified as bully breeds, which are short-haired dogs with short coats. They are considered excellent watchdogs because of their small size and high energy level. Many people have significant responsibilities, so these characteristics make them ideal for small families and single individuals. Take a look at the Frenchie Chinese Crested mix. Share on facebook. For fans of all types of Bulldogs, crossing a French Bulldog with an English Bulldog might seem like a good way to get the best of both breeds. But is it a good idea? When you cross two different dog breeds like the French Bulldog English Bulldog mix, the result is called a hybrid. The practice of mixed breeding comes with plenty of controversy. Hybrid vigor means the improvements in form and reduction in inherited disease associated with crossbreeding. However, many other people believe that controlled breeding and genetic testing are the best way to reduce the risk of genetic defects. Origins In 13th Century England, bullbaiting was a popular sport. In order to fight staked bulls, these dogs were ferocious with huge jaws. When bullbaiting was outlawed in , the Bulldog faced extinction. Fans of the breed began the long process of transforming the vicious bruiser into a companion dog with a sweet, mellow disposition. In the mids, a toy Bulldog that weighed about 12 to 25 pounds became popular, particularly with lacemaking artisans around Nottingham. When the industry relocated to northern France, toy Bulldogs made the journey as well. Their thick-set, well-muscled physique with wide shoulders and sturdy limbs are equally unmistakable. Even their characteristic rolling gait is distinctive. They stand just 14 to 15 inches, and males can weigh up to 50 pounds. Their short smooth coat is glossy, and comes in a variety of colors and patterns. They are considerably smaller than the English Bulldog, standing 11 to 13 inches and weighing under 28 pounds. However, since these two dogs are quite similar and have a shared history, the appearance will be a little more predictable. You can expect a medium-sized dog with an athletic build and short fur. Their heads will be square and oversized, the muzzle short, and ears can be erect or floppy. Despite their violent history and surly appearance, the English Bulldog is not prone to aggression. These breeds do have some differences. The English Bulldog has kept his propensity for courageousness, which makes for a good watchdog. The Frenchie was bred to be a lapdog, opting to play and be pampered. Both, however, can have a stubborn streak. Training Your Dog Puppies are likely to want to urinate at certain times of the day, so following a potty training schedule is a good way to reduce the number of accidents. Crate training will also help with bladder and bowel control. Despite being stubborn, the French Bulldog English Bulldog mix is also a people-pleaser, which can help with training. As with all breeds, early socialization and positive reinforcement training techniques from a young age is the best way to ensure your puppy develops into a well-adjusted adult. Moderate exercise consisting of minute daily walks will suffice for this breed. Extreme weather has a big impact on their health. Brachycephalic breeds have a tendency to overheat. They should never exert themselves in hot or humid weather because their short muzzle can make breathing very difficult. They should never be left in the sun without access to shade and water. Pools are hazards for this hybrid too, as they cannot swim. Their short legs and stocky bodies mean stairs should also be avoided to reduce the risk of back problems. Health Issues Often mixing two different breeds is a way to reduce the chance of inherited health problems. In the case of the French Bulldog English Bulldog Mix, both parent breeds share some serious health and conformation problems. Which makes them more, not less likely in their puppies. Brachycephaly Brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome refers to the effects that a flat muzzle has on the respiratory system. Signs of this condition include snoring, panting, overheating, exercise intolerance and gastrointestinal problems. Over time, these symptoms can worsen and cause permanent damage. Surgery is often required to allow normal respiration. Their wide-set protruding eyes are prone to eye disorders such as corneal ulcers , which can potentially cause blindness. Dental problems are also a result of their conformation. Because they have the same amount of teeth as any dog—with less space to fit them—tooth decay is also quite common. It causes intervertebral disc disease IVDD and other spinal malformations. Both the French and English Bulldogs are predisposed to screw tail. This condition can also cause severe back problems. In some cases, it can impact anal glands. You will need to check the tail area every time your puppy poops to keep him clean and avoid infection. Grooming and Feeding The short, smooth coat of the French Bulldog English Bulldog mix is fairly low maintenance, requiring an all-over brushing once or twice a week. They will do best with a high-quality, age-appropriate dog food. As both parents are prone to obesity, be mindful of calorie consumption. Being overweight exasperates conformational issues such as joint and back problems.

Next up is another thing to do before you bring your puppy home… How To Puppy Proof Your House When puppy-proofing your house, think like a puppy. Crawl around on the floor and take note of what you see. Puppies will chew nearly anything, so make sure that there are no valuables down at puppy-height, or things that could be poisonous to them or be a choking hazard. Make sure there are no open cabinets or pantries where your puppy could get into food. Be careful of small trash cans that could hold some smelly trash that would be enticing to a puppy. And finally, next are a few other random tasks to do before you bring home your new puppy. Getting a golden retriever puppy? Check out the Golden Retriever Puppy Handbook! Not exactly. Find a vet. Find the closest emergency animal hospital. This is not something you want to wait until you need it before looking it up and making a plan. Find a list of local poisonous plants and animals. Talk to your vet and do some research so that you know which plants and animals to avoid. Find a puppy kindergarten class. This will help with training, socialization, and general learning how to be a puppy parent. Check your yard or house for any escape routes. This next section will cover everything from what to expect with a puppy, what to do the first 24 hours of bringing them home, how to train them, and more. A week after bringing Oliver home, it was very obvious to me why she asked me that. Puppies are hard work! Their little bladders can only hold it for a few hours, so this is expected. Chewing Puppies will try to chew any and everything. Like every thirty minutes often. Now, for the most important expectation of them all… You will miss puppyhood! Yes, you will miss the sleepless nights and puppy bites. So make sure to take lots of videos and pictures. How would you like to be treated in this situation? Here are some tips to help your puppy get comfortable in their new home. Let your puppy make decisions When you get to your house, set them at your open front door and let them choose to walk inside. Let them explore their new home on their own terms. Letting them make decisions can give them a sense of confidence, hope, and control, and ease into their new home. Limit visitors Now is the time to build the bond with your puppy and let them get to know you, not overstimulate them with a lot of people. Limit their access to your home Getting used to a new home with two rooms will be a lot easier than getting used to a new home with five rooms. Only let your puppy have access to a few rooms so that they get acclimated to their new area quicker, then as they get more comfortable you can allow them to explore new areas of the house. You can use baby gates to restrict access to sections of the house. Bonus benefit: this will also decrease the chances that they leave you a present in the guest room. In general, just keep things low key when you bring them home and let them get used to their surroundings. Training Your Golden Retriever Puppy Training your golden retriever puppy is one of the best things you can do both for them and with them. They have short attention spans and like to have fun, so short training sessions and training games work best. A lot of people think that training is just obedience training, like sit and stay , but it also includes life skills like crate training , potty training , how to not jump on people or bite them, and how to not pull on the leash. Socialization Socialization is something that is not talked about as much as it should be. It can help mitigate fear and aggression and help them become confident, well-adjusted adult dogs. You can socialize your puppy with other dogs by setting up play dates with gentle dogs that you know are vaccinated and by going to puppy kindergarten. Dog to other living beings includes humans, cats, and other animals. You can socialize them with other people by taking them to a pet-friendly store like home depot, and you can socialize them to other animals by taking a walk by the neighborhood cat with lots of distance between them, so neither animal gets overwhelmed. Dog to stuff is the broadest category, but no less important. When Oliver was very young we were on a walk and a FedEx truck drove by. He had never heard a big truck like that and was terrified. So make sure that your puppy is comfortable with trucks, cars, the garage door, buses, umbrellas, and whatever other objects they may encounter. For instance, if you live in Chicago, get them used to trains, buses and crowded streets. Every day, separate out five special treats for your puppy. For example, you might let your neighbor give your puppy a treat, or maybe you take your puppy to a bus stop and when the bus goes by you give them a treat, or maybe you introduce them to a cow and give them a treat. The treat helps them have a positive experience with these new things and people, plus it helps you easily remember to expose them to lots of these new things. Do this for the first four weeks of their life and before you know it, your puppy will have been exposed to new dogs, people, things, or environments, and will be well on their well to becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. Puppy Raising Mistakes Below are some mistakes that new puppy owners make that could make it harder to train and raise their puppy into a happy, confident adult. Not remembering how young they are Puppies are like little toddlers. Waiting to train your puppy until they have a problem Training your puppy before they have any behavior problems will make life so much easier for you. Forcing things too quickly Things like crate training and potty training take time. Setbacks hurt more than stretching their limits will help, so be patient and take things slowly. Conclusion Golden retriever puppies might just be the best living beings on the planet. However, they are a lot of work and can be quite naughty sometimes. How do you know if the Golden Retriever is the right fit for you and your family? A Brief Background on Golden Retrievers! Bred in the highlands of Scotland by Lord Tweedmouth in the mid to late s, Goldens are a cross between a Yellow Retriever and an extinct dog breed, the Tweed Water Spaniel. Lord Tweedmouth wanted the ideal gundog to accompany him during fowl hunting and be able to withstand the rugged terrain and rainy conditions. Aside from being able to retrieve fowl, Lord Tweedmouth wanted an even-tempered dog to have at home when not hunting. And so, the Golden Retriever was born. Later in the s, they soon became a popular breed amongst American families when President Gerald Ford had a Golden named Liberty as his family dog. Golden Retrievers, like their name states, are golden! Their luxurious coats come in a variety of light to dark shades, ranging from light like the white Golden Retriever or English Cream to dark golden colors, even close to chocolate. Their coats feature feathering down their backs, chest, belly, hindquarters, and tails. Goldens have soft expressions combined with floppy expressive ears that give them a puppy-like appearance even as adults. Another thing to note of the Golden Retriever is that those fluffy coats are actually what are known as double coats. A strong water repellant coat on top coupled with a dense undercoat to regulate their body heat. This all means these pups can be heavy shedders! What are Golden Retrievers Personalities like? Some overly energetic and friendly pups can get excitable around new people and dogs. That can result in some unwanted whining, lunging, and jumping. When done correctly, socialization helps teach your puppy the proper way to greet people, other dogs and create boundaries. During socialization sessions, you can work with your puppy on those common over-excited behaviors when meeting strangers. And if you're not sure how to do this on your own, hire a local puppy trainer or join an online puppy training school to help set you up for the best success! Do Calming Obedience Exercises With all their high-energy and high-drive, teaching your Golden how to be calm in everyday scenarios will help tame that wild side! Great calming exercises include having your puppy learn to wait for their food bowl and in thresholds each time you enter or leave a space. This also extends to activities like fetch. Goldens are a natal for this! This can be done simply by having your pup drop the toy when they return and pausing for a few moments giving them a chance to settle before throwing it again for them to retrieve. Teach Them to Walk Nicely on Leash Many high-energy pups have a tendency to lunge toward exciting new things! Couple that with a social nature, and you may encounter that your Golden Retriever puppy will start to pull on leash. Focus on teaching them proper leash manners including how to walk in Heel position and how to pass other people and pups without lunging, jumping and excited whining, barking or nipping at them! That can greatly help possible bad encounters with strangers and other dogs while teaching them great habits! Did you recently bring home a Golden Retriever puppy? Read ahead of time. We felt well-educated on a plan for taking care of a puppy by reading books before Emma came home. We needed to be very hands-on and involved when Emma was here, so we were happy we already had a plan ahead of time. Planning allowed us to maximize our time with her and increase success. From Day 1, we worked on very simple training tasks with her and added more skills or increased the complexity each week. Watch your puppy like a hawk. Puppies do not know right vs. Our job is to teach Emma what she should and should not do. By watching her closely, we were maximizing success for the long term. The goal is to intervene or redirect her before she starts an undesired behavior. It is easier to provide direct supervision by using puppy gates to limit her access in the apartment. Start training from day 1. Puppies need mental and physical exercise. Puppy Training We followed a five-week training plan to cover basic obedience skills and a few fun tricks. We found each week's pace of training and structure to be highly successful in building a solid foundation. I would recommend following the training in order as each week build on the previous week starting with week 1 training. Puppy Socialization Our at-home training was supplemented with puppy socialization classes at a local training facility for Emma to be around other dogs and people. We were happy we were already registered for puppy socialization classes before Emma came home. Honestly, it is one of my favorite parts of the week. Emma always came home ready for a nap. I recommend searching in your area for puppy socialization classes by looking online, asking neighbors, or asking your vet. When Emma receives all her vaccinations, we will be out and about with her more often, which will help with socialization and provide the opportunity to continue training in various environments. We plan to visit some of the pet-friendly stores in our area. Lastly, we will sign Emma up for an obedience class to continue to work toward our goal of her becoming a therapy dog to continue our mission to spread smiles. My husband and I are bringing home our first puppy in September a goldendoodle and this was super helpful! Emily June 29, , am Thank you so much for this, Jen! I look forward to the post on favorite dog toys! We just got a puppy and, while its only been a week, we are definitely having some issues getting puppy to embrace his crate. He is doing really well with potty training, and has yet to have an accident in his crate, but soon after he enters his crate the howling begins. This way he associates it with a positive place. Also, leave treats in there. Some dogs do better with their crates covered so like drape a blanket over the sides so it feels more like a cave. You might also try placing a t-shirt or something that smells like you in there. Also, leave the door open all the time and praise him if he goes in on his own. Good luck! OH, what a difference! Long after they no longer needed their crates, we kept them and always left the door opened. They would go into them when they were tired, knowing they were in a safe place; their place. Friends always said to us that they would have a dog if it behaved like our dogs. Be consistent. Fun for all of you. I can definitely see how teaching while a puppy can make a huge difference. Looking forward to your next dog related posts :. Reply Link Megan June 29, , pm Ahh thank you for this post! My husband and I are looking into getting a pug puppy soon and these tips are so helpful. Looking forward to reading more posts on this, especially the crate training. Love the tips, we are still trying to stay the course with the UD group classes! Golden are the best! It has been such an eye-opening month with our new puppy. Our other dog is 8 so everything feels brand new. I actually wrote about it in my post for tomorrow, but a puppy is like a baby. My boyfriend and I are getting a golden pup in the fall and while I grew up with the breed I have never trained a pup on my own. We made the choice to get a puppy mostly to instil good habits and behaviour long term. So long story short, I would never put a puppy or young dog or any age in airplane cargo! Reply Link Megan June 30, , pm Good tips! Socializing him right away and crate training him were so key to having an awesome, well-adjusted dog! Reply Link Josi August 20, , pm Hello! Just wondering where you got your goldens? This really helped me figure out what to do when she gets here. Jen May 3, , pm YAY! Our 3rd Golden in about 33 years and know he has some big paws to fill Taegan was wonderful for 14 years. We are so excited!! I have a new English Cream Golden. I feel like I need to work for his affection. Great otherwise! Not super energetic. Bursts of energy followed up by lots of naps but never really interested in walks. First timer here. Your pup could really benefit from basic positive obedience! I would recommend seeking out an experienced trainer in your area to help you as your pup grows! Having a puppy in the home can be fantastic, but you also need to make sure that you can offer it the best as well. She has been really easy to house break. We are excited to bring her home. Thank you for the helpful tips. That is a good idea to make sure that we are committed to doing the work to train this dog. We do really want him to be well trained. Thanks for the tips! Thank you so much for this super informative post! Reply Link Jen January 22, , pm I always made sure she went before we got to the gym and walked her frequently. Meghan January 29, , am Thank you so much for the reply!! We kept each of our puppies on a leash in the house, never out of our sight except when they were in the crate for 4 months before we gradually gave them independence. We always messed with them and held them. They had accidents as you would expect until fully house trained at about 4 months, but never any destructive or aggressive behavior. We gave them plenty of tough chew toys. Also training classes. They were never nervous or skittish. They love to lay on us and never have had any trouble with grooming, food guarding, loud noises, children or other animals. Goldens are great dogs but like any dog, they can only know what you teach them. Great article!! Kathrinne May 5, , am Hi Jen, how old are your puppies when you let them go out? Jen May 5, , am What do you mean? Reply Link Carly September 8, , pm Thank you so much for your article! What would your input be? Do you think they would focus on each other more than their humans? Would 2 puppies be so much more difficult than 1? Any advice is greatly appreciated!! Love the name Zoey!! Any tips to Prevent that?? Reply Link Christine November 1, , am About to get golden 3. Learning all over about everything. Reply Link Jen November 1, , pm It is like starting over again but you will figure it out! Every pup is different but be patient and consistent! This is my first large dog breed so a little nervous. I read your post and you give wonderful tips that I will follow. Please let me know if it is safe to put a flea collar on the puppy. Thank you. Reply Link Jen January 29, , pm I would consult with your vet to see what they recommend for flea prevention and treatment. Also, about the scratching. It could be due to something else like an allergen outside. I have not had a dog in 3 years because I lost my last one in a painful way for me and I am afraid to get another one. I am now ready to get one and this page has helped me prepare for my new puppy. I am a 74 yr old male in pretty good shape no health issues, and retired so I should be around a while to look after a dog. My pup Tank will be 4 months when we get him. He is absolutely adorable. Have only seen photos. He lives with his breeder in Missouri and we live in Canada…. I am so excited for you!!!! Puppies are intense but so much fun. And wow, that is going to be an adventure! Reply Link Theresa April 30, , am Do you have suggestions about golden retriever puppy biting? We got ours at 7 weeks. She is now .How do we stop her from snapping and biting? She is smart and loving. The biting has been rough though. Can you help? But I love dogs soooo much. This info is everything to me. I love this post Soo much. Thanks a ton. You left puppy in car? Or what? Reply Link Madeline October 31, , pm I am picking up my 7 week old golden in 2 days! I am so excited! How did you go out taking him places before he had his full shots? I want to socialize him, and of course potty train him immediately, but obviously there are risks. Whats your take on this? So the whole crate training thing is not going so well. She hates it. Emily Camalo April 2, , pm Hi! Really appreciate you sharing all of this advice! It was super valuable. Reply Link Julie April 11, , am Loved your comments. I have a 9 week double doodle. I have crate trained since day 1 and she has been really good, day 1 upset for a couple of minutes. Day 2 no problem at all. Now just the occasional cry when I leave her but that is over with in a very short space of time. I also leave a low radio on for her. She uses the garden most of the time for toileting, but occasionally she will come into the house and do another wee. The problem I have at the moment is trying to stop her biting. I have tried the gentle command which she listens to some of the time. And I have tried standing and turning my back on her so she realises I am not playing when she bites, but she will then go for trousers or feet, which I try my best to ignore, or she will just go off and do something else like chew a mat or something which is a no no. Any ideas? Regards Reply Link Stephanie January 25, , am Really great info, thank you for your article. Our puppy arrives in 5 days and we have been preparing for months. Your advice is. He was a feral dog in Texas in his previous life, and lived with his sister on the edges of society, always between people, surviving by not being caught until one day he was. Suddenly this regal dog found himself trembling on the cold hard floor of a shelter, on the list to be killed. Its easy to understand why its hard for Corbin to feel safe around anyone but other dogs, but for the past year hes been developing an appreciation for life as a domestic house dog and his true character has slowly been emerging. Corbin will always feel most comfortable in the company of other dogs, and loves most of the usual things dogs love. Hes wild about going on walks, especially in the forest, and will happily spend his day hunting and harassing rodents. He loves sprinting freely across a grassy yard now, something he never had the chance to do in Houston. A frozen marrow bone in his crate delights him for a few hours of luxurious chewing. Watching him revel in life is an absolute joy! He enjoys head and butt scratches, and will sometimes even ask for affection. However, the instinct to stay out of reach runs deep in this handsome dog. He will not come when called; he will at best follow other dogs who do, but even then will stay at distance from accompanying humans. He isnt at all aggressive in the least, just very shy and wary. Every day he grows more confident, so much so that now hes ready to take on any bicycles and pickup trucks that have the nerve to pass him on the street. Corbins best life includes a large fenced-in yard and at least one, preferably more, other friendly dogs. Hes pretty curious about most things, even if hes a bit scared, so hed probably do ok in a either suburban or rural environment. A busy city would be too much for someone whos afraid of people getting close enough to touch him. Hes not a dog to adopt if youre looking for someone to play fetch with. Corbins the boy for someone whos content to make a deserving dogs dreams come true, where he can lounge peacefully in the sunshine, chase chippies and explore the neighbourhood with his pack mates. Corbin was born with bad hip dysplasia on one side, and doesnt like to use his rear right leg. He still gets around fine on 3 legs and can run faster than you! He does appreciate a daily pain reliever like gabapentin. Apply to adopt this animal at lastminutedogrescue. Your dog can still pant and drink in this muzzle for their comfort. For example, if your dog is reactive or a bite risk, a basket muzzle may be the best option. They tend to be the most durable and are comfortable for your dog. Fabric muzzles may be more suitable if your dog is less reactive or for more occasional use. The correct fit will also ensure your dog is comfortable. Take your time to check the size guide along with the reviews, and measure your dog carefully. High-Quality Materials A muzzle made from high quality materials is much more likely to be effective and to stand up to wear. You can also look for additional features such as breathability, and whether the muzzle allows your pup to pant and drink. Durability and Strength Of course, you want the muzzle you choose to be durable and strong. High-quality, durable materials are key here. There are lots of reasons a dog might need to wear a muzzle including: Bite risk: If your dog is reactive or is prone to biting, you may need to muzzle them to keep everyone safe while you work on changing the behaviour through training. Breed specific legislation: Depending on where you live, some dog breeds may need to wear a muzzle in public by law. You need to show your furbaby that the muzzle is safe and a positive thing to wear, rather than something negative. Repeat this process a few times. Use a positive soothing voice and feed them a treat through the muzzle or as soon as you take it off depending on the muzzle type. Take it off straight away, then repeat a few times. This helps to build the positive association. Once your dog is comfortable with this step you can move on. Put the muzzle on your dog and fasten it, again using a calm soothing voice. Give them a treat through the muzzle. Take it off straight away. Repeat until your dog seems comfortable. Gradually build up to your dog wearing the muzzle for a minute, then a few minutes, and so on. Any time your dog is wearing the muzzle give them plenty of treats and praise. Not all German Shepherds need to wear a muzzle, but some may need to in specific circumstances. Do muzzles make dogs more aggressive? Choosing the right muzzle can help to keep everyone safe, while keeping your pup happy and healthy. American Kennel Club. They are very easy to fit and use with a fully adjustable strap and buckle as well. Its great to meet your different needs with the multiple choices and solving your problem easily. Anyway, if you have no idea about your dogs mouth size, this product will help you. Package Included: 7 different sizes in each set. Safe and reliable, effectively prevent dogs from eating unclean, biting habits, hurting people or things. Check Price This one is a little different from the other products on our list, mostly because it is a set of 7 muzzles rather than just one. As such, this represents a great bargain that you might want to consider. They simply consist of a sheathe that goes over the snout, with only one strap to hold it in place. One good thing about this set is the variety that you get. Most of these muzzles are sized differently, giving you good options for old dogs, young dogs, larger dogs, smaller dogs, and everything in between. There is something to be said for simplicity, and these muzzles definitely have that factor. They are quick and easy to use, waterproof for outdoor use, and dogs seem to find them quite comfortable compared to most other muzzles. The biggest flaw of this product is the single nylon strap. Just one more of those things would have made this product a lot more reliable. Used for safe socialization, safe handling during vet visits, grooming or dog travelling. Perfect for daily dog exercise and walks This is a very modern-looking muzzle, and it has quite a few interesting features that live up to its appearance. The snout cage is made entirely of high-strength plastic, which is very thick. This is attached to straps on all four sides, making this a very well-secured muzzle. We might as well start by talking about the most distinctive feature of this muzzle: The plastic cage. Most muzzles use steel or leather as their main structural components, so this one is something of an oddball. Dogs with sensitive skin might benefit from a muzzle like this one. You can heat it in a variety of ways, but steam is probably the safest option. Once it has been heated, it will become much more flexible. Once it has been heated to this point, you must hold it in place until it cools. This one also has a special adjuster that is meant to tighten the muzzle in response to pulling. Thus, if your dog tries to paw or dig this muzzle off, they will probably just make it that much tighter. This can be a good thing, but it can also present a safety hazard if the muzzle becomes over-tightened. We also worry that the plastic cage could be vulnerable to chewing. The reasons might be simple like aggression or complex like a self-chewing problem. Safety This one is listed first because it is the most important consideration. Some muzzles can present a choking hazard if overtightened, so be wary of those neck straps. There have, unfortunately, been cases in which a dog was strangled to death because its muzzle was fastened too tightly. Sometimes, these things can come from the factory with sharp points on the corners, and these must be filed or sanded down. If you need to put it in perspective, ask yourself how much you would enjoy wearing one of these! Friction is one of the big issues in this department. As the dog walks and moves around, the muzzle will move just a little bit, and this movement can be a problem if the muzzle is rubbing against the snout. Obviously, soft substances like plastic or leather can be allowed to rub a little bit, but any chafing from metal should be dealt with immediately. If nothing else, you can wrap the offending parts in electrical tape or otherwise add some kind of padding. Security Since security is the main purpose of a muzzle, this factor needs to be considered carefully. On the other hand, you need something that will hold those powerful jaws reliably. You should always look at the number of straps, as this plays a big role in how well they stay on the dog. Four straps would be ideal, but three is good enough for most German Shepherds. Muzzles with one or two straps can be used, but only if your aggression problems are mild. Durability Last but not least, you want to consider the overall durability of any muzzle that you might buy. This factor goes along with security somewhat, because a weak muzzle will not do its job for long. Leather and steel are the ideal materials when you need something tough, with steel being a little better because it cannot be destroyed by chewing. Plastic can be used, but you should make sure it is very thick like the cage in our seventh example. Another thing to look for is redundancy. What we mean is, your muzzle should not rely on just one mechanism to hold it in place. If only one strap is holding the muzzle on your dog, then only one strap has to be broken in order for disaster to occur. Rather, you are searching for the one that suits your needs in the most effective way. We hope that this article will help you to do that and that you will come back to see us again. FAQ: 1. Why do I need a muzzle for my dog? Answer: There might be situations where your dog needs to be muzzled to prevent potential biting incidents. Even if your dog is docile, others may still be fearful of them in public. It is important to pick the right muzzle to fit your needs. What is the best muzzle for a German Shepherd? It is durable, secure, and provides no room for biting. However, it is also the most expensive option. Product Reviews Muzzles can have a negative connotation. However, a muzzle is not only used for aggressive dogs. There are many reasons a dog may have to be muzzled. Muzzles can be used to discourage your dog from licking a wound, for grooming, during training, to prevent barking in certain situations, to prevent biting in an emergency or unknown situations, or to prevent your dog from picking up dangerous objects while out and about. This article will list the best muzzles for German Shepherds as well as how to properly select a muzzle for your dog. Size Size is one of the most important factors to consider when buying a muzzle. Then you need to also measure the circumference of both. The muzzle size you select is also important because it should be snug enough to do the job, but large enough to allow your dog the ability to pant. Not having the ability to pant for too long can cause your dog to overheat because panting is how dogs control their temperature. Additionally, the size will go to the overall comfort of the muzzle for your dog. Your dog will be less bothered by being muzzled if the muzzle is comfortable. Ability to eat and drink The ability to eat and drink is also a significant factor to consider. This is especially important on warmer days or if you are muzzling during training — your dog will get thirsty and you will want to reward your pup good behavior with a treat. Styling There are different muzzle styles for different purposes. For example, a muzzle for grooming will be different from a muzzle for preventing barking. Consider the reason why you are purchasing a muzzle to help determine what style of muzzle you will need to purchase. Sturdiness It should be obvious that a muzzle should be sturdy. If a muzzle is not sturdy enough it defeats the purpose of muzzling in the first place. Muzzles are not a substitute for proper training You should never muzzle your dog instead of investing time in training. Many dog behavioral problems can either be prevented or curbed by training early on. Keeping your dog in a muzzle all day should never be a solution and is not safe for your dog. Think about your reason for muzzling your German Shepherd, and only use a muzzle for short periods of time. It is a basket muzzle that has adjustable straps for comfort and it has many holes in the basket for breathability. This muzzle is great for short stents like maybe a visit to the vet or a training session. Many owners said their dogs can drink some small amounts of water while wearing this muzzle. What I Love:. Get the measurement of the distance from the eyes up to the back of the ears. Measure the neck starting from the back of the ears Measure the widest part of the snout and the longest part of the snout. Here are tips on how to make your GSD feel good about wearing muzzles. You need to show your GSD that muzzles are nice to wear. As you show the muzzle to your GSD, feed him some treats in the muzzles without forcing him to put his nose in it. Gently try putting on the muzzle to your GSD by repeatedly giving treats through the muzzle. Play with the buckles and straps as if trying to snap it on your GSD. Continue giving treats to your GSD to make him feel occupied until he gets used to the muzzle. Leave the muzzle on longer but with supervision. Make sure to associate muzzle-wearing with happy thoughts and not only scary moments to avoid stressing the GSD more. Conclusion: Responsible owners are people who make sure that they muzzle up their GSDs to prevent untoward incidents from happening. Muzzles are not training tools so they should not be worn longer than recommended by vets. These GSDs might be undergoing a stressful situation and their owners are probably twice stressful than their fur babies. Peter My name is Peter and I am a dog lover. This will ensure that the puppy comes from healthy parents and has been raised properly. How would you know which is the right breeder? There are many lists of good and trusted breeders online that you can check. Alternatively, you can look at dog breeder reviews in your area. After that, once you get in contact with a breeder, you should make sure that they are upfront and honest with you. And of course — always ask for a health certificate! What about adopting a bulldog from a shelter? Still, well-run shelters and rescues often provide health certificates and adequate health info. They also take good care of their animals. It should go without saying that young pups are full of energy but a lot of new bulldog owners get surprised by that. What does that mean? In fact, bulldog puppies are a lot of fun! However, you should be mindful of that before getting your bulldog puppy. The dogs from this breed are very loyal and defensive of their family Most dog breeds are known as loyal and loving toward their families but this goes doubly for bulldogs. This makes them an incredibly dependable breed — unless you mistreat it, your bulldog will always be by your side and will always be willing to help you out. Bulldogs often need to be taught not to bark. Because they feel the need to protect you, bulldogs often have the urge to bark not just at strangers but even just at outside noises. This can be annoying not just for you but for your neighbors too. Bulldogs can be a little jumpy. This is as much out of fear as it is due to their instinct to react to anything that might threaten their family. But while it is incredibly cute, it also leads to certain problems. Breeds with such flat noses are called brachycephalic dogs. With pretty much all of them, this unique facial structure is due to the way they were bred over the years. And with all of them, it has two negative side-effects: The potential respiratory health problems we mentioned above. Lots of snoring! Sure, the latter sounds much less problematic than the former. And it is! But the extra loud snoring and snorting are still important to keep in mind Why? This breed is extremely social and requires near-constant human presence A common misconception is that all dog breeds are social. Sure, all dogs are more social than cats but there are still dog breeds that are much more individualistic than others. Bulldogs always want to be near you, they always love sleeping on you, they love getting pets and belly rubs, and they adore any type of attention and pleasant physical interaction. Is there a downside to this, however? Unfortunately, yes. This hyper-social mentality of bulldogs makes them ill-suited for people who spend lots of time out of the house. Instead, bulldogs are best-suited for people who work from home. Get your bulldog a second canine buddy. A bored dog is a dog that takes out its frustration on your couch. Fortunately, bulldogs are not one of those breeds. Instead, all they need is a bit of running, a bit of ball play, and the rest can be hugs and petting on the couch. If you make the mistake of overplaying or overworking your bulldog there may be some unfortunate health consequences such as overheating, hyperventilating, or a stroke. In short bulldogs are lazy dogs for lazy people. Or, at least adult bulldogs are that way — as we said, bulldog puppies can be quite energetic before they grow up. Be mindful of overheating your bulldog Going on from the previous point, bulldogs are really easy to accidentally overheat. And not just with excessive physical exercise either. Instead, a bulldog can get overheated due to many different reasons: Stress. And also, you want to know what to look for when buying an English Bulldog? There are some obvious questions and some not so obvious you should ask the breeder before buying. Generally, expect to pay somewhere in-between for a well-bred puppy from a renowned and respectable breeder. The fees for a new puppy is not all profiteering by the breeder, though. There are expensive testing procedures they must pay for, such as progesterone testing. When faced with the high cost of buying a new puppy, some think it makes sense to buy a cheaper dog. The puppies are a more affordable price for a reason, which is usually slipshod breeding methods. When this happens, the new owner will pay thousands more in vet bills because of ongoing health issues. They have a list of Bulldog breeders they recommend. One primary requirement is the health testing of breeding dogs. Even pet stores are not the place to buy a quality bred puppy. You are perpetuating an industry that thrives on the unhappiness and pain of defenseless animals. If you see an offer to fly an English Bulldog puppy to your area of the country, refuse to buy. English Bulldogs are brachycephalic flat-faced , and even if the breeder can find an airline that still allows these dogs on board, the dog might not survive. Some of the common problems with English Bulldogs are breathing difficulties, hip dysplasia, skin allergies, and cherry eye. Even the best quality Bulldogs can suffer from any of these ailments. But even though the health issues are minor, they will add to the cost of owning a Bulldog. What you need to avoid are any serious underlying health problems. You can avoid them by buying your puppy from a reputable breeder. These breeders do everything in their power to produce the best quality and healthiest Bulldog puppies. They care about their dogs and their reputation. They will offer you a health guarantee. Generally, the breeder allows for the puppy to be seen by your vet. If your vet finds anything serious, the breeder should offer a refund or a replacement puppy, depending on what you both agreed. A good breeder will always question prospective new parents to make sure they will be suitable for their puppies. Most breeders you come across will only sell their puppies if they are spayed or neutered when they reach the correct age. Generally, breeders are not enthusiastic about the selling dogs for breeding or showing. If they are, expect to pay a lot more money. What Color Do You Want? All white is trendy, but they can also be brindle or red. Be aware that black or blue is not part of the Bulldog breed standard. If you are lucky enough to get a pick of the litter, which should you choose? From our experience, we like puppies that show confidence and curiosity. Try to contain your enthusiasm and wait for a puppy to notice and pay attention to you. Many people say they picked an individual puppy because they instantly connected with the puppy they chose. But always lookout for the one that notices you. Cherry eye is a problem with the breed. Inside the mouth: Look for an elongated soft palate; if there is, avoid the puppy. Breathing: Because they are brachycephalic, Bulldogs will always labor a little with their breathing. Make sure this is not excessive in any of the puppies. Lethargic: A puppy can be sleepy, but when he wakes up, he should be lively. If the puppy seems overly tired and sluggish, he has a problem. Walking and playing: The puppy should walk correctly, does not appear wobbly on his feet or dizzy. He should be aware of his surroundings. Puppy nose: Look for Stenotic Nares in the puppy. These are narrow, pinched nostrils that will create significant breathing difficulties later on. Conclusion Adopting a puppy is a joyous occasion for all the family. We hope this article on what to look for when buying an English Bulldog has given you some guidelines which will help you along the way. Further reading. A lot of people make the mistake of buying an English Bulldog without doing much research, only to later discover that these dogs have a lot of special needs. In this guide, I will lead you through all you need to know before buying an English Bulldog, and also what to look for, particularly with the breeder. What should I know before buying an English Bulldog? Although English Bulldogs are known to be sweet, loyal, and very people-centered, they are also prone to a host of health problems. This is the most important aspect of all… you need to be prepared for the potential for high vet bills. These specific needs can make them time-consuming and expensive dogs to keep. Unfortunately, far too many English Bulldogs end up abandoned once they develop costly health problems. As a result of decades of breeding to ensure a flat nose and stout figure and those famous wrinkles , English Bulldogs are unfortunately prone to a few genetic disorders. These include hip dysplasia, brachycephalic syndrome, and ventricular septal defect, where a hole develops in the heart. However, many of the other conditions that plague this breed are avoidable with a little foresight and care. As they are a brachycephalic flat-faced breed, they find it harder to breathe than other dogs. This is especially true in summer when they are prone to heat exhaustion. Additionally, they are also predisposed to a multitude of skin conditions. If the folds around their face are not kept clean, it can cause bacteria growth that can result in irritation and even infection if left for too long. With that said, these are charming and loyal dogs. Full of personality and affection, they make perfect family pets and ideal companions for the right owners. This next step will depend on whether you want to adopt an adult English Bulldog or a puppy. Each choice has its advantages and disadvantages, so it depends on which one will suit your lifestyle better. Buying English Bulldog puppies Aside from the cuteness overload, arguably the best advantage when it comes to buying an English Bulldog puppy is that you can train them early on to fit in with your lifestyle. However, if you have the time, experience, and patience to get through those initial months of training, you will have the opportunity to build an excellent bond with your new pup. Buying a puppy can present a lot of challenges, but providing you know what to look for, it will be a rewarding experience! By ensuring that they are getting adequate training from day one, you can help them to avoid bad behaviors. In a similar vein, by making sure they are getting the right healthcare early on, you can ensure that they avoid any unnecessary health complications. Buying an English Bulldog puppy from a reputable breeder also means that you can be sure about their heritage. English Bulldogs are not cheap from the get-go, but as puppies, they will require plenty of trips to the vet for all their initial check-ups and vaccinations. Buying an adult English Bulldog Buying an English Bulldog who is fully grown means that there will be fewer surprises. On the downside, any bad habits they have developed will be firmly ingrained. Buying an adult English Bulldog who has already been trained can be a lot easier. The only challenge here is that it may take some time to find the right dog to fit your needs. On the flip side, there are also plenty of adult English Bulldogs looking for a home who have behavioral issues. Although some of these issues are minor and may only need remedial training to correct, there is also the risk of encountering more severe behavioral problems. A dog who displays fearful or aggressive behavior may take years of training to correct and is not a task for an inexperienced owner. The only danger here is that you may not be adopting a purebred dog. Aside from this, there are also dedicated rescues just for English Bulldogs. How to buy an English Bulldog Arguably the most crucial step you can take when choosing to adopt an English Bulldog puppy is to ensure that you are going through a reputable breeder. An honest and dedicated breeder will always put in the time and effort to ensure that any puppies they are raising are as healthy as they can be. The puppies should be socialized from a young age, and the breeder should have no issue with you coming to visit the kennels. This is where you do not want to hunt for a bargain. English Bulldogs are expensive to breed, owing to the unique complications and special needs involved with this practice. Although you could go for a cheaper puppy, you risk adopting a dog with severe health issues. As a general rule of thumb, a cheaper dog can end up costing you far more in the long run. Also, many good breeders should be able to provide you with a bill of clean health before you adopt, and they should offer you a guarantee. Once you adopt, they should give you at least two days so that you can get your new puppy checked out by your own veterinarian. If you find any unexpected health issues within this period, the breeder should be willing to offer you a refund or to replace your puppy. What to look for when buying an English Bulldog puppy Once you have settled on a reputable breeder, now comes the best bit: picking out your new puppy including what to look for when buying an English Bulldog. For one, you need to ensure you pick the happiest and friendliest puppy in the pack. If the puppy is curious and shows confidence when approaching you, that is an excellent sign. Instead, enter the enclosure where the puppies are kept, and sit down to observe them. As hard as it can be, resist the urge to reach out for any of them, and instead allow them to come to you. Doing this also allows you to observe their behavior. The puppy that you pick should be friendly, easy-going, and well natured. Other signs to keep an eye out for include: Clean eyes and ears: The puppy should not be squinting. Red eyes in particular can be a sign of a serious problem. Look for a straight tail that shows no restriction while moving: Additionally, the tail should not be pointing down. These can all be an indication of screw-tail — a malformation of the vertebra in the tail. This condition can result in severe discomfort for the dog, and expensive treatment later on down the line. See how often you should walk your English Bulldog. Where you can, avoid puppies with abnormal coloring: This type of coloration includes chocolate, black, blue, and lilac. All of these colours are clear indicators that the puppy may develop severe health issues as it grows older. Decide on a male or female puppy: In general terms, males tend to be more energetic, whereas females can be more relaxed. Be cautious if the price is too cheap. An unusually low price could be the sign of an unhealthy English Bulldog puppy. That said, by keeping an eye out for some of these signs, you are more likely to be adopting the healthiest puppy that you can. English Bulldogs only have 3 to 4 puppies in a litter and only should be bred a handful of times over their lifetime. Questions to ask an English Bulldog breeder Before you settle on buying an English Bulldog and have ticked off all the things you should look for, please, please, please question the breeder extensively. Ask how many litters the mother has had: an English Bulldog should only really have 1 litter a year, preferably only one every couple of years. More than that is a warning sign that she has been bred more than she should have been. Make sure your breeder is knowledgeable: on looking after his breed. Also Google the breeder first to see what other people have said about them. Ask if the puppy has been assessed by a vet: You also want to be sure the puppy has had the right vaccinations. Injections should be sorted out by the breeder before the puppies are available to buy. By doing so you can see what the puppy might grow up to be like and whether the mother is healthy. Ask if the parents have had health checks: This will also help you decide whether the puppy will grow up healthy with no genetic traits. Things to look out for on the health check include hip problems, cataracts, cherry eye, deafness, and soft palate problems. The best breeders will be transparent and honest. Ask how old the parents are: A mother younger than 3 years old ca present a problem as health problems might not yet have appeared yet. Try to buy an English Bulldog puppy whose mother is older than this age. Ask where the puppies have been living:You want to buy an English Bulldog puppy who has been socialized a little. Ask how often the puppies have been handled: Puppies that are handled from a young age will also be easier to train. Conclusion Regardless of these issues and health concerns, English Bulldogs are beautiful and sweet companions. They are full of personality and will be sure to make you laugh with their confidence and quirkiness. However, they do require a lot of care and attention… and any potential problems can be reduced providing you know what questions to ask and what to look out for when buying an English Bulldog puppy or adult dog. I write about the things we've learned about owning dogs, the adventures we have, and any advice and tips we've picked up along the way. Recent Posts. Contact Us Buying A Bulldog The Definitive Guide English bulldogs are the mascots of choice for many colleges, organizations, and even military branches. Bulldogs are mostly docile and well-behaved, choosing sleep over other popular canine activities. For those looking to purchase a bulldog, there are several considerations that must be made beforehand. Below are some tips on how to shop and buy a Bulldog puppy, what to look for in a breeder, and what to consider when purchasing a dog. What should I expect to pay for a puppy and how do I choose a reputable breeder? Many are surprised to find out that bulldogs are an expensive breed. In fact, quality puppies will set you back anywhere from two to four thousand dollars. But, there is a reason for this. Bulldogs are the result of specific and selective breeding process especially when it comes to champion dogs and bulldogs that represent the breed well. There are huge expenses for the breeder as well such as progesterone testing, stud fees, c-sections, milk formula, vaccinations, de-wormings, puppy checkups, special diets, whelping gear, etc. Choosing a dog because of a smaller price tag could cost you more in the long-run. You should search for a reputable English bulldog breeder. But where to start? One of these requirements is health testing. This way at least you know that you are dealing with Breeders who are conscientious about producing healthy puppies. Do not look to purchase puppies through Craigslist, Social Media Sites, Pet Stores or the Walmart parking lot yes, I have seen them for sale in parking lots! Breeders who sell thru these venues are generally profiting and are not truly dedicated to the breed. These puppies are often poorly bred which results in an unhealthy puppy. A reputable breeder will be available to you for the long haul and eager to help with any questions or concerns throughout your bulldogs life. Look for breeders who can provide you with a complete pedigree of your dog, a health guarantee, and a bill of sale. Finally, never have a bulldog shipped to you. Since they are brachycephalic flat-faced , they are less likely to survive the shipping process compared to other breeds. What should I know about Bulldog health and Cost? You should know beforehand bulldogs can have minor but common health concerns, including cherry eye and skin allergies and require excellent veterinary care so before buying a puppy make sure to have the puppy checked out by a Vet. A reputable and responsible breeder will have a clear and transparent health guarantee listed on their website and give you hours to get the pup examined at your own vet just in case there are any costly or life-threatening conditions outside the minor issues common to bulldogs that can be easily treated. Check to see if they will replace the puppy; refund you in the event something is untreatable. Caring for a female dog in heat is messy and time consuming, and male dogs with their testicles intact tend to be more headstrong and have more of a tendency to lift their legs and mount yours than neutered males. Finally, decide on appearance. White bulldogs resembling the University of Georgia mascot are very popular, but the breed standard also allows for dogs to be brindle or red. Black or blue colors however, are not part of the breed standard. The English bulldog is a great breed, but be sure to know what to look for in a breeder and in a puppy before purchasing. Finally, if a puppy is not your thing, there are many bulldog rescues throughout the country that can provide you with an adult dog. Whatever method you employ, remember to take your time, do your research, and always opt for quality over cost. For detailed information or to have a question answered by a breeder click here. Since then they have been dedicated to responsible Bulldog breeding and passionate about breeding as well as competitively showing English bulldogs. This mid-size breed is 16 to 17 inches tall at the base of the neck. Males are about 54 pounds and females 50 pounds. Adult dogs are prone to becoming overweight. Bullies have thick necks, short faces, and heavy wrinkles that need frequent cleaning. A bulldog coat is straight and short and sheds a moderate amount. The bully has low grooming requirements. The standard colors for bulldogs are fawn, red, white, or brindle tiger-stripe. They can also have 2 piebald or 3 tri-colored colors. English bulldogs are laidback and only need 20 to 40 minutes of exercise per day. But they are physically unable to swim. The bulldog is people-orientated and needs a moderate amount of attention. Bulldogs are brachycephalic flat-faced and do not do well in hot weather. They tend to overheat and have breathing difficulties. Still interested in owning an English bulldog? Due to potentially serious health risks, reputable breeders have a significant investment in each puppy. You can find bully pups online and in pet stores. They are usually more affordable but also poorly bred. These dogs typically end up costing their owners thousands more in vet bills due to ongoing health issues. Buying English bulldogs through these venues also keeps in existence an industry that thrives on the unhappiness and pain of defenseless animals. A breeder must follow stringent guidelines before the BCA will endorse them. When picking a reliable breeder, it is essential to know their reputation. How long have they been in business? Are the dogs allowed to mature before breeding? Is the breeder comfortable with you visiting their facilities? A reputable breeder should come across as open and honest and welcome your visit. Preferably, the parents will be together, and the animals can go outside to play. Check if the puppy has been socialized with cats and children as well as with other dogs. You should not buy an English Bulldog puppy if they offer to fly it to you. Are they healthy and friendly toward other animals and each other? What do they look like? Those adorable puppies are likely to grow up to look like and act like one of their parents. Meet the Puppies Of course, you are going to fall in love. Puppies are adorable! But step back a moment and make sure you pick the right puppy. Study the puppies to avoid obvious health issues. Here is a list of what to look for when buying an English bulldog puppy. If the puppy is five to six weeks old, she should walk and breathe normally. Rasping, rattling, or wheezing is a red flag. Is the puppy happy and friendly? His tail should be straight and move easily — not restricted or pointing down. The puppy should not need to squint when looking at you. Is the dog deaf? White or predominately white bulldogs are prone to deafness. The puppy should be aware of his surroundings and be lively, not sluggish or overly tired. If elongated, the soft palate can cause issues. Be cautious about selecting the runt of the litter as they may have more health issues. Temperament Is the puppy friendly? Did she come to you? Look for signs that the pup is fearful. Is he whimpering, crying, or urinating due to fear? Check for aggression or rebellion. How does the puppy act if restrained for 30 seconds? Will she follow you? Will the pup let you carry him? You want your puppy to be confident, curious, easy-going, and good-natured. Gender Male or female? Many believe a female bulldog is easier to train, and the males are less emotional. Every dog has its own personality, so judge the pups by their temperament. Body Type All bulldogs have slightly different body shapes. Observing the parents should give you a good idea of how large your dog will grow and its body type. Perhaps its head will be a bit larger or its legs a bit shorter. Color English bulldogs come in eight standard colors. The piebald 2 colors and tri-color bullies combine these colors. Brindle tiger-stripe — is a striped pattern with a different colored base. Fawn red — ranges from a pale tan to deep deer-red. White — a popular choice that may be pure white or have a few freckles in another color. Lilac — rare color variation, the purplish-gray color is a mix of blue and brown hues. Black — a rarer color, the shiny black coat may have a fawn undercoat. Blue — the coat will appear gray in the sun or against darker-colored objects. Chocolate — another rare color. A deep, rich brown. Seal — very rare. These dogs have light-colored eyes and a reddish or brownish cast to their coats. Their legs and tail will be darker than the rest of their coats, and they will have a dark stripe down their backs. Some experts suggest that bulldogs that are black, blue, lilac, chocolate, or seal color could have more health problems than the brindle, fawn red , and white dogs. The Breeder Should Question You A reputable breeder cares for his dogs and wants them to have a good forever home. It is usual for them to question you on your suitability as a dog owner. They will not be enthusiastic about selling dogs for breeding or showing, so you will pay a premium if that is your intention. A good breeder will not hand over the puppy until it is eight weeks to three months old. Before eight weeks, puppies need their mothers for health, developmental, and weaning reasons. Separating them from their mothers too soon can lead to health and behavioral problems. With another month, the bully pup learns a lot and is less miserable to leave his dam. Expect to sign an agreement with the breeder that you will have your pup spayed or neutered when they reach the correct age. Medical Records and Certification Every dog breed has some health issues, and even the best quality bulldogs can suffer from many ailments. Minimize the potential for underlying severe health issues by purchasing from a reputable breeder. Breeders with quality dogs care about their reputations and work hard to produce healthy puppies. The breeder can provide those records. A puppy with a historical bloodline of purebreds and champions shows that the line still meets the original bulldog standards and should have fewer health issues.

We have had Clementine Callie for four months now, and she is a wonderful dog. Her personality is amazing, and I think part of it is breeding and the other part is Erika and her family lovingly raising the puppies in their home with plenty of attention and snuggles. I also was impressed that, rather than send the puppies out right at 8 weeks, Erika kept ours for a few extra weeks because she was tiny and not read to leave her mom yet. It's that care that differentiates Bruisers from other breeders. Emily R. Erica was easy to work with thru the entire process from application to adopting and now beyond as we host our new family member, Chief. Her on-call support and willingness to provide open, honest advice to all of our questions and concerns continues to be appreciated. When we were first exploring English Bulldog breeders our biggest concern was the overall health of the dogs. We decided to work with Erica at Bruiser Bulldogs because we liked their focus on improving the breeds breathing abilities and the fact that the puppies are raised within her family environment before coming home with their new owners. Bowser also breaths clearly and our vet was impressed with his overall health from the moment we brought him home. All that said we know English Bulldogs have a predisposition to many health issues and that his current health can not predict the future. With that In mind its important to start with a breeder that open to answer any of your questions as Erica has ours, and that strongly believes in improving the breeds overall health profile. Adam B. My sister ended up finding Bruiser Bulldogs and we knew right away that they were the breeder for us. In September we ended up driving 9 hours to pick up two Bruiser bulldog puppies- one for my husband and I and one for my mom. Jackson and Penelope have been nothing but a joy. They are both very athletic and healthy. They are also HUGE snugglers and always want to be with you. It is an absolute pleasure having these two bullies in our lives! Erica is very knowledgeable about the breed. She is very hands on throughout the process and is just overall a kind and honest person to work with. With all that being said I cannot recommend Bruiser Bulldogs enough! Collyn C. One of the reasons we chose Bruiser Bulldogs was due to the claims about breeding for health. During our first visit at our vet's office, he told us that our pup was one of the healthiest English bulldogs he had ever seen. He is healthy, happy and social. Would recommend to anyone. Christina S. We seen our dog on their website and sent them an Email. Mitch called us and personally walked us through the process and made sure we had the right dog for our family.
