Cataracts : As in humans, canine cataracts are characterized by cloudy spots on the eye lens that can grow over time. Cataracts can usually be surgically removed with good results. Early in the disease, dogs become night-blind. As the disease progresses, they lose their daytime vision, as well. Many dogs adapt to limited or complete vision loss very well, as long as their surroundings remain the same. Epilepsy : Labs can suffer from epilepsy, which causes mild or severe seizures. Seizures may be exhibited by unusual behavior, such as running frantically as if being chased, staggering, or hiding. Seizures are frightening to watch, but the long-term prognosis for dogs with idiopathic epilepsy is generally very good. Puppies are born with TVD, which is a malformation of the tricuspid valve on the right side of the heart. It can be mild or severe; some dogs live with no symptoms, others die. TVD is detected by ultrasound. Research is ongoing to learn how widespread it is in the breed, as well as treatment. Myopathy : Myopathy affects the muscles and nervous system. The first signs are seen early, as young as six weeks and often by seven months of age. A puppy with myopathy is tired, stiff when he walks and trots. He may collapse after exercise. In time, the muscles atrophy and the dog can barely stand or walk. There is no treatment, but rest and keeping the dog warm seems to reduce symptoms. Dogs with myopathy should not be bred because it is considered a heritable disease. Bloat occurs when the stomach is distended with gas or air and then twists. The dog is unable to belch or vomit to rid themselves of the excess air in their stomach, and blood flow to the heart is impeded. Blood pressure drops and the dog goes into shock. Without immediate medical attention, the dog can die. Suspect bloat if your dog has a distended abdomen, is drooling excessively, and retching without throwing up. Theyalso may be restless, depressed, lethargic, and weak with a rapid heart rate. If you notice these symptoms, get your dog to the vet as soon as possible. Acute Moist Dermatitis: Acute moist dermatitis is a skin condition in which the skin red and inflamed. It is caused by a bacterial infection. The more common name of this health concern is hot spots. Treatment includes clipping the hair, bathing in medicated shampoo, and antibiotics. Cold Tail : Cold tail is a benign, though painful condition common to Labs and other retrievers. The dog may bite at the tail. It is thought to be a problem with the muscles between the vertebrae in the tail. Weekly checking and cleaning if necessary helps prevent infection. Labrador Retriever Care The lovable Lab needs to be around their family, and is definitely not a backyard dog. Labs show some variation in their activity levels, but all of them need activity, both physical and mental. Daily minute walks, a romp at the dog park, or a game of fetch, are a few ways to help your Lab burn off energy. After the Puppies are Born Puppy Collars The first thing we do after the puppies are born is to place a collar on them. Puppy Announcement and Weekly Updates After the puppies are born, we send a birth announcement via email to each family on the list with the litter specifics and pictures. Taking Home Your Puppy At eight weeks, you will be invited to take your puppy home. Your puppy has already been introduced to the crate. So Crate Training should begin immediately upon your arrival home. There are numerous training aids which provide guidance in this area. However, since it is important to begin a training routine immediately, the following basic tips will give you a start: Never push or shove your puppy into the crate Never use the crate as a means of punishment Coax your puppy in with toys or a treat Reward your puppy with lots of praise and another treat Also note: Do not leave your new puppy alone in the crate for more than 2 or 3 hours during the day. Your puppy will need to relieve itself often. Because they do not naturally like to soil their sleeping area this works in your favor for potty training. You establish the times for going to sleep and waking up. Be consistent. Thereafter do not place anything in the crate until his potty training is well under way. The idea here is that if your puppy has an accident he will be wet and uncomfortable until you come to rescue him. When your puppy is dry and clean for two weeks straight then you can try giving him a towel and see how he does. When possible leave the door open during the daytime in a restricted area so that the puppy can go in and out at will. The crate is not only used to help you house-break your puppy but also to help you establish yourself as leader and set clear limits for your young puppy. A puppy that is not crated gets into lots of expensive trouble before he is full grown. Dogs do not suddenly outgrow destructive chewing and getting into things, so it is best that they never learn that they can chew or destroy furniture or other valuables. More helpful hints: The rule for puppies between seven to fourteen weeks old is that they are in their crate more than they are out. When they are out they are confined to a puppy-proof area and under close supervision. If no one is available to watch, the puppy does not receive freedom. Remember, your puppy is a baby and also needs a lot of sleep and down time. When he is out of his crate he is usually in overdrive, playing hard. After about fourteen weeks you can start to be a little less vigilant and see how it goes. If your puppy is getting into trouble back up and limit his time out to supervision time only. However, make sure you check on him frequently to be sure that he is not getting into trouble. Crate him when you leave the house, at least for the first eighteen to twenty-four months of his life. Remember, he is not considered full grown until he is two years old. When your Poodle has proven that he is trustworthy while you are home, you can then allow him out of his crate while you are out. Start with short periods of time. Eventually, when he can handle small amounts of time, you can extend his free times to longer and longer periods, until he can be home alone several hours of the day. To prevent future behavior problems by giving privileges too soon, your puppy should sleep in a crate from day one. The crate can be in your room, but your puppy should not be allowed to sleep with you. Using a crate is an excellent way to ensure that your puppy will not destroy something valuable. It was only as recently as that this breed was recognized by the American Kennel Club. Ironically, almost a century after its descendant, the Irish Setter was recognized. History of the Parent Breeds The English Setter and Poodle are established breeds with distinctive physical traits and personalities. The following is a look at the origin and traits of each breed and what makes them wonderful dogs. English Setter The English Setter is a medium-sized hunting breed developed as far back as years ago in Britain. The breed was developed to work game while being able to respond to the geographical challenges that are unique to the country. The dog went ahead of the hunters to locate the birds, then lay down quietly so as not to spook the game. Once the dog set, the hunters came in with their nets and threw them over the bushes to trap the birds. English Setters are bred to retain their instinct to stalk and alert the hunter to the presence of game without flushing the prey. Many owners of English Setters have reported that their puppies display the seek-and-point instinct shortly after weaning. English Setters have an easy temperament, which makes them great family dogs. They can settle into apartment life as long as they get regular stimulation. My experience with English Setters My mom was obsessed with Terriers. So growing up, my family had Airedales and Welsh Terriers, and then eventually, we adopted a Miniature Schnauzer. On the other hand, my partner grew up with English Setters as the family dog. He was incredibly sweet-tempered. It was long, soft and full of color. Poodle The Poodle is famous for its hypo-allergenic hair coat and people-oriented nature. It comes in multiple sizes, making the breed perfect for people from all walks of life. One Poodle owner states that one of her driving reasons for owning a Standard Poodle is its trainability and friendly nature. Poodles are affectionate and friendly with people as a general rule. The teacup version of the Poodle is easily carried in a handbag, while the larger versions are primarily seen as an ornamental companion breed. These opinions overlook that the Poodle was developed as a hunting breed and is very athletic despite being considered a dog for urban dwellers. Poodles are intelligent and energetic and need their fair share of exercise or play to feel good about themselves. Poodle owners can enjoy these traits by enrolling them in dog agility classes or taking them to a doggy daycare where they can have rough and tumble time with other dogs. Appearance The English Setter and Poodle are similar in build and size but have distinctly different coats and colors. Combining the two breeds results in offspring with one of three different coat types, and solid coat colors dominate. Sometimes the offspring inherit the Belton coat of the English Setter, but the Poodle coat colors are more common. The English Setter is known for a medium-to-long hair coat with a fringe that hangs from the abdomen, legs, and tail. Its dominant coat color is known as Belton, which refers to a ticked, roan, flecked, or spotted coat pattern. The Belton coat is similar to the Dalmatian coat in spotting and patterning. Coat Type The three coat types of the English Doodle include: Straight Wavy Curly The straight coat is the least common, with wavy and curly being the most common. Offspring with a wavy or curly coat also has the hypoallergenic trait of the Poodle. The English Setter-Poodle mix with curly coats requires the same amount of grooming as their pure-bred Poodle parent. A straight coat also requires care but requires fewer trips to the groomers. They come in sizes from small to standard, with most individuals falling in the standard height and weight range. Height The average height of the standard English Setter Doodle is 19 to 23 inches for females and 20 to 24 inches in height for males at the shoulder. Weight A standard-sized individual weighs anywhere from 45 to 60 pounds for females and 65 to 80 pounds for males. They can be trained to hunt like their purebred parents, are high-energy enough to keep up with kids, and are ready to relax once the day is done.
