Twitter Pinterest Splish, splash! How do you give your Goldendoodle a bath? To answer this question, I put together this how-to guide filled with my favorite tips on how to bathe a Goldendoodle. How often should you bathe a Goldendoodle? Before we dive into the how-to, you may be wondering how often to bathe your Goldendoodle. In theory, I bathe my Goldendoodle once a month. Many Goldendoodle parents wonder whether they should bathe then brush or brush then bathe. Actually, when it comes down to bathing a Goldendoodle, I recommend all three: brush, bathe, and brush again. Brushing thoroughly before the bath will remove tangles and mats. Gather your supplies. The next step in bathing a Goldendoodle, is gathering supplies ahead of time. Most Doodle dogs have enough hair and fluff to go around! Choose clothing accordingly. Some Goldendoodle parents even make clothing optional! Your cell phone because who can resist taking a few pics of a soggy doggy! Create an atmosphere your dog enjoys. Just like a human spa day, creating a calm environment will help your doggo enjoy the experience. Here are some ideas: Play soothing music. According to a study on music and dogs I found in Science Direct, dogs respond positively to soft rock and reggae music. Just hearing your happy voice can set a happy tone for your dog. Make it positive. Give your dog plenty of verbal praise, love, and even treats. If your dog is food motivated, it may be helpful to use a lick mat that can be suction cupped to the side of the tub. Before your dog hops into the bathtub, place a nonslip mat in the bottom of the tub. Also, it could help prevent a slip-and-fall injury for your dog. This is very important. Since dogs are a little more sensitive to warm water than we are, even making it a little less warm than you might like it is probably about right. Keep the water pressure low and gentle. Also, it allows you to focus on keeping water out of the ears and eyes. Use a dog shampoo to wash your dog. Do not use human shampoo to bathe your Goldendoodle. I simply put shampoo and water in a nonbreakable cup and mix it up. Then, I massage the shampoo into her coat one section at a time. For all the details on the dog shampoo we love and use check out: Best Shampoo for Goldendoodles. Working gently, I start from the top and work down paying extra attention to the paws, which tend to be the dirtiest. GOLDEN TIP: Especially for our long-haired or fluffy Goldendoodles, visually assessing the body while wet makes it easier to determine body condition—overweight, underweight, or just right. Also, I make sure to avoid getting water in her eyes and ears. Rinse thoroughly. This may take several passes. When washing my Goldendoodle, I usually start rinsing from the top and work down. That way all the soap gets off the highest point and goes to the lowest point. Leaving shampoo on the coat can result in irritation. Towel dry working in the direction of the coat. Then I wrap a towel gently around her body and help her out of the tub. Holding her like a baby, I pat her coat, working in the direction of her hair and not against it. When bathing a Goldendoodle, my goal is not only happiness but also not to tangle the hair. Rather, I towel dry working with the direction of the coat and not against it. Over the years, my Goldendoodle has become so accustomed to this, she gives me her paw so I can dry it for her. Blow dry the coat. After bathing a Goldendoodle, the gold standard is to blow dry the coat with a high velocity pet grooming dryer. This helps separate the hair. When the hair is completely dry, gently brush the coat again. Once your dog has had a good break, comb or brush the hair. For this last step, I think a dog grooming table comes in handy. Sometimes we celebrate with our favorite pupsicle frozen yogurt dog treat. More Goldendoodle bathing tips What else can you do to help your dog love and not stress over a bath? I typically plan on making Goldendoodle bathing a two-day event…one day for brushing and the next for bathing, drying, and brushing. Use your happy voice and give your dog plenty of sweet talk. Always check in with your dog. Is your dog cooperative? Never take this for granted. What about bathing a new puppy? If you have a puppy, there are several things you can do set your furry bestie up for a lifetime of happy baths. When my Goldendoodle was just a puppy, I honestly lucked into making bath time happy for her. She loved drinking out of the bathtub faucet. I turned it on so it was just a trickle of cool water. She clamored into the tub. She lapped up the trickling water from the spigot. Then I cupped my hands under the faucet and she drank from my hands. She still loves doing this as an adult. Your Goldendoodle puppy may love this too. Or, maybe your dog is food motivated. If so, you can try placing a lick mat on the side of the bathtub to provide a happy distraction. Here are more ideas for how to help prepare your Goldendoodle puppy for the first bath: Preparing your puppy for a happy bath time experience Before the bath, plan a time to just let your puppy have fun exploring the area where bathing will happen. Of course, have the area puppy proofed first. Let your pup sniff, explore, or approach the bathtub on their own terms. Slow and steady wins the race. If all is going well, try placing your puppy in the tub, which should be empty with no water running. Give treats, praise, and make it fun! Always end any new experience on a positive note. Once your puppy likes the bathing area and the bathtub, try turning the water on…just a trickle. Remember, the sound of the water may be frightening to a puppy. Give treats and use your happy voice to give lots of verbal praise. Enhance the experience by using a lick mat suction cupped to the wall. This makes a happy distraction. Thank you for sharing your valuable time with us and for loving Goldendoodles. Goldendoodle hugs and kisses! Your puppy may be a little skittish, but there are ways to keep your Doodle at ease during their first bathing experience! Your supplies should include a gentle shampoo-plus-conditioner for dogs, a dog brush made for thick fur, a towel, and, yes, a hairdryer! Let them sniff and play with the brush, then move on to gently combing through their hair. Brushing is something your puppy will need at least once a week, so it is vital to make them as comfortable as possible to ensure cooperation into their adult years. Then, gently place your puppy into a bath tub filled with warm water. They may be uncomfortable at first, but remain calm and patient, giving them as much time as they need. As they adjust to this new environment, provide lots of praise and treats! This will ensure your puppy is well socialized for a lifetime of grooming needs. Shampoo When your puppy is comfortable, move on to your shampoo! Make sure their coat is fully saturated with water and gently massage the shampoo into their fur, avoiding their eyes, mouth, and ears. Clean these sensitive areas with a damp cloth or toothbrush. Rinse them thoroughly until all of the suds are gone with a removable shower head or a large cup. Leftover shampoo can make brushing more difficult later on. After your puppy is shampooed and rinsed, you can move on to the drying process. Use a towel to wipe down your Goldendoodle and let them shake off the excess water. Pay close attention to cleaning and drying their ears, inside and out — damp, dirty ear canals can cause an infection! Drying When your puppy is damp and your towel is soaked, bring out the hairdryer! Use a low heat and velocity setting for their first blow dry to prevent nervousness. This will prepare your Goldendoodle for future trips to the groomer and the bathtub alike! When your Goldendoodle is completely dry, you can finish their grooming by giving them a thorough brush. Brushing your puppy before and after bathing will prevent uncomfortable mats and knots. Next, introduce them to the nail clippers. Socializing your Goldendoodle with nail trimming as young as possible will ensure comfortability throughout their life! Now, you have an adorable, clean puppy. That is… until their next adventure! Use tab to navigate through the menu items. Every dog loses their puppy fur to grow in their adult coat. For Goldendoodle puppies, this poses a challenge. A quick solution to this is using a slick brush a few times a week. Here is one of our favorites. All of our Doodles of NC puppies are brushed from just a few weeks old so they grow fond of the one-on-one bonding time. Bath time! In addition to brushing, our puppies learn to love bath time. Using a tear-free or mild dog shampoo allows you to bathe your doodle as frequently as every week without drying out their fur. Earthbath All Natural Pet Shampoo is our all-time top pick. Dogs, in general, have sensitive ears. If their ears start emitting a strong odor, or your dog scratches their ears and whines, we recommend a trip to the vet to check for an infection. Mini goldendoodles can easily be bathed in the kitchen sink. For larger Goldendoodles a walk-in shower or bath tub with a shower wand works beautifully. Lather twice and rinse thoroughly! Then towel dry and brush the coat. To speed up the drying process, a hair dryer on a low, cool setting, can speed up the process. Trips to the Groomers A goldendoodle's fur grows quite rapidly. We encourage a few trips to the groomers a year to help trim up their coat especially around their eyes to help minimize madding of the fur and healthy coat growth. And, one last tip! It is gentle enough for their delicate skin, but also smells super clean and fresh. And, feel free to reach out to us with any other questions you have on providing the proper care for your Goldendoodle. Do Goldendoodles Need Conditioner? We may bathe often, but bathing a dog too often can lead to dry skin, which causes itching in dogs. Grooming a Goldendoodle puppy should begin as early as possible in their life to promote acceptance of this task. This breed requires a lot of grooming, so get them used to a routine early. Some dogs will enjoy it, while others may only mildly tolerate it. The good thing is that puppies love to play, making it easier to undertake this ritual. Our Recommendation is to Take it Slow The first session can be a bit of a challenge for Lexie, but they will become less nervous about the process after the first few months. Having a puppy is a joyous time for a pet owner. We know it was for us when we adopted our beautiful Lexie. All that loveable cuteness with all that energy and curiousness about life can be fantastic fun to have around the home. As Lexie grew, she liked to go on little adventures around the house and our fenced-in yard, exploring and discovering lots of trouble. We found a perfect balance for bathing our cute teddy bear girl around once a month through research online and trial and error. We would only clean her more if she got extra, especially smelly or dirty, and needed it. In between those bath or shower times, we would brush her as needed with a slicker brush to remove tangles and prevent mats. If any mats have formed in their curly coats, you may need to cut them out with scissors or clippers. Puppies need to learn early on that bath time can be a fun experience. Regardless of how often a Goldendoodle puppy is bathed, it should always be positive since grooming is a lifelong task that they must accept and learn to enjoy. How do I bathe my Goldendoodle puppy? Those first bathing sessions were fun, where we ended up with just as much water on us as she did her, it was more like a family bath than a mini Goldendoodle puppy bath, but that was okay. Treats, verbal praise, and games can make the bathing experience enjoyable for everyone, from that first initial wash down to old age. These tools help keep it acceptable and fun for the whole family. It is important to brush and comb a Goldendoodle puppy before they receive a bath. Any discovered issues can be addressed, and then they can be bathed with a gentle dog shampoo free of fragrances designed for the unique needs of a puppy. You can follow this with a dog conditioner if desired. After this is done, offer a few treats and some much-needed praise. Overall it should be a positive experience for all involved, so everyone looks forward to the next time. We had a window of time to get it all done in those beginning days, fast before Lexie got bored. Thankfully her size made it easy for us to manage. A final brushing should do the trick, and both you and your beautiful fur baby pup will be headed for the next adventure of the day. It is highly recommended that a Goldendoodle puppy be bathed in a bathroom or possibly outdoors if the weather is tolerable. Some people like to think that bathing a dog weekly or bi-weekly will prevent them from being dirty, and to a certain point, depending on the dog itself, this is partly true what comes in its place though, can be much more irritating to deal with, dry skin. Not everyone enjoys baths at first, including us humans. Making it a fun experience can go a long way to creating the right environment for acceptance. Curiosity is the name of the game when it comes to bathing a Goldendoodle puppy. Depending on their unique pup personality, this may take a bit of time, a couple of sessions even, but throw in a few toys, and what Goldendoodle puppy can resist this fun? We did this once when Lexie was a puppy, and it was a warm summer day. If, after these sessions, a Goldendoodle puppy is less than enthused about a bath, their owner could undoubtedly join them in the tub for some water fun. Bathing a Goldendoodle puppy once a month is a guideline, not etched in stone. Should I have my Goldendoodle puppy bathed at the groomer every month? While a groomer can make a Goldendoodle look adorable, at the puppy stage, there is no need to waste money and time for them to do a task that a Goldendoodle puppy owner can do at home. Should the family be averse to doing it in their own home or yard, then a groomer will do a lovely job while offering them the experience of someone else handling them. This is a passive way to socialize with the Goldendoodle puppy. Grooming and bathing, whether at home or at a groomer, teach and train them while socializing them, which is beneficial for their mental and emotional development. They learn what is expected of them, and after a time, it naturally becomes a part of their life. In Conclusion A Goldendoodle puppy should be bathed about once per month. How often you bathe your Goldendoodle puppy is likely more informed by how dirty they get. This time frame is only a guideline as there may be certain times when they are bathed more or less than monthly. Whatever the length of time, we can tell you, a freshly bathed Goldendoodle puppy is too hard to resist! How Often Should I. How to Wash a Goldendoodle How to Wash a Goldendoodle Goldendoodles are a popular mix between golden retrievers and poodles, and their coats share features with both parent breeds. The coat can range from gentle waves to full-on curls, with the longest growth on legs, tail, ears, or body. All these make it easy to wash a Goldendoodle. Start with Brushing and Clipping The first step to wash a goldendoodle is to thoroughly brush the coat. Some areas are difficult to access regularly with a brush and may be prone to mats or knots. Use a sharp and well-maintained set of clippers to remove the knots. Be sure to use clippers specifically designed for dog grooming as they are better equipped to cut through dog hair than human clippers. Never use scissors to clip your goldendoodle as sudden movements could cause injuries to the dog. Shampooing The next step is to move the goldendoodle into a bathtub or washbasin for shampooing. Choosing the right dog shampoo for a goldendoodle is critical to avoid drying out their often sensitive skin. Consider mild human shampoo options such as no-tears baby shampoo or fragrance-free shampoo-plus-conditioner. Once you have the right shampoo, you can jump in with the wash. Also, consider using a dampened washcloth. Massage the soap gently to create a lather as you go. Repeat this process multiple times until all of the soap is removed. Let the goldendoodle shake itself dry as needed and then air-dry or use a blow dryer on a lower setting so as not to startle your dog or hurt its ears. Be sure the dog is completely dry before any further grooming, as wet fur can appear shorter than it actually is. If you still have questions, contact us today.
Exercise Grooming In the past, the English bulldog was used by foreign immigrants who moved to South America and brought their dogs with them. The breed, however, became close to extinction after the second world war. Some breeders, John D. Johnson, and Alan Scott kept infusing several bulldogs together in the bid to breed the American Bulldog while monitoring its health and capabilities. Today, the American bulldog is completely rid of the fear of being extinct and has become one of the most popular dog breeds in the country. The American bulldog is many sizes larger than the English Bulldog; however, they are quite similar when it comes to their temperament. It is basically a huge, cuddly, lap dog that loves children and is very affectionate. It is brave, confident and extremely loyal to its owners. They can be quite reserved when around strangers as they like to mark their territories. When trained from a young age, the American Bulldog will display an impressive level of intelligence. They are not so friendly with other strange dogs and mostly like to keep to themselves. As earlier stated, the American bulldog is a fun-loving, happy dog that thrives in a family setting. The perfect environment for this breed would be a home with a large backyard that is well fenced-in. Since they are very energetic and must be kept active, it is imperative to their growth that they have ample space to run around during the day. This is crucial for their mental and physical well-being. For dog lovers who live in apartments, the American bulldog might not be the best option for them. This is because there is inadequate space for them and being left alone would adversely affect their mental health. They can also become very irritable and destructive if left alone for long periods as they need constant mental and physical stimulation. The American Bulldog needs about two hours of outdoor exercise on a daily basis. It goes without saying that this breed is not suitable for people who work many hours every day. This dog breed requires basic physical and mental stimulation like jogging, walking, chasing balls, playing fetch, farm work, agility, and basic obedience exercises. Due to the temperament of the American Bulldog, it has to get as much exercise preferably in the outdoors. If its exercise requirements are not consistently met, this dog breed will take out its frustration in your home by chewing apart and basically destroying everything it comes in contact with while running around. The American Bulldog has quite a short coat with a minimized length and this feature makes it easy to groom. Brushing their coats weekly is usually enough when it comes to grooming the American Bulldog as they do not shed a lot. They also need thorough baths weekly or as needed as this will keep the shedding in check. Our American Bulldog puppies for sale come from either USDA licensed commercial breeders or hobby breeders with no more than 5 breeding mothers. We only purchase puppies from the very best sources, and we stand behind every puppy we sell. American Bulldogs love routine and will adapt to an exercise and grooming routine if the owner enforces it perfectly. As loyal dogs, they love to please their owners but will only obey upon frequent reinforcements. Do American Bulldogs shed a lot? Since they do not have a lot of fur, they do not shed a lot and owners will not have a lot of hair to clean up, unlike many other dog breeds. Why do American Bulldogs have webbed feet? This is mainly due to genetics and is not a cause for concern. Should American Bulldogs be spayed? Many vets advise that American Bulldog owners should ensure their pets are neutered or spayed when it is between four and nine months. How often should American Bulldogs be fed? The American bulldog has a very large appetite in its formative years. They must, therefore, be fed very often about four times daily and in double portions when they are puppies right until they turn four. Are American Bulldogs a food fit in families? The American bulldog will fit right into your family. They love kids and tend to gravitate towards them. Do American Bulldogs have common health problems? A lot of the health problems experienced by American bulldogs are mostly genetic and do not affect the entire breed. These ailments could range from the kidney to thyroid disorders and a lot more. What is the American Bulldogs life expectancy? The American bulldog has an average lifespan ranging from ten to fifteen years. What is the American Bulldogs average size? The average American Bulldog can grow to 58kg for males and 41kg for females. However, it is important that their diets are closely monitored to keep them from getting overweight. How tall do American Bulldogs get? The male American bulldog can grow as tall as 71cm while its female counterpart can grow up to 61cm. If you want a loyal, smart and incredibly active dog, then the American Bulldog is the perfect fit for you. Are you interested in purchasing a American Bulldog? Buying A Boxer Puppy? Finding Your Puppy -- Buying From the Breeder The conscientious breeder plans a breeding to reproduce the best characteristics of an outstanding sire or dam. His guide is the official AKC Standard of the breedthe written "blueprint" that helps keep the breed uniform for generations to come. You can find the breed standard, revised in , at the American Boxer Club website: www. The more common disappointments for pet purchasers come from commercial sources--especially pet shops that often buy puppies from the infamous "puppy mills" that take little notice of the quality or health they are producing. The pet store or dog broker will sell you a puppy with a breeder's name attached to the paperwork--but this puppy may easily have been born in a puppy mill. The reputable breeder, on the other hand, will not only be able to demonstrate the pedigree and registration papers, but will also show you either the sire or dam themselves, or pictures of the parent who may be owned elsewhere. Though the mere presence of "papers" does not guarantee good health, conformation, or temperament, you will most often find these attributes in the puppy who has been raised with loving care in the home or kennel of a conscientious hobby breeder. The serious breeder often strives to produce a potential "champion. Sometimes the distribution of white markings alone may make the difference between the so-called "pet" and show-potential puppy. The pet puppy will have benefited from the same proven bloodlines, nutrition, and medical care as its "champion" littermate. His breeder will have health tested the parents and done the best he can to insure good temperament, soundness, and longevity. Here is your best buy. Boxer magazines publish ads from breeders. The American Boxer Club web site www. Usually any time after weeks. Many states have regulations regarding minimum age. However, your individual circumstances must be considered. Do you have the time to spend with a very young puppy? Will someone be home to housebreak him? Would an exuberant 6-month old puppy overwhelm a tiny child? Or would he be better matched with a 6-year-old youngster? Remember too that the puppy under 3 months needs lots of time to rest. Don't forget that adult dogs, already trained, also make ideal pets. While much can be told at six to eight weeks about the puppy's eventual looks, if you are seeking a show prospect you might be better off waiting until the pup is six to eight months of age. At that time, be prepared to pay a higher price for all the additional time and effort that the breeder has spent raising the show potential Boxer. Male or Female? This choice is a matter of personal preference. Both males and females make admirable pets. Breeding is a serious committment of time, energy, and money, and not to be taken lightly. If breeding is not anticipated, it may be appropriate to spay or neuter your dog. This procedure is best done as your Boxer approaches adolescence. Please be aware that these surgeries should be discussed with your veterinarian as to safety of anesthesia and any long term effects other than sterilization. Spayed and neutered animals are not eligible to compete in the conformation ring but may be shown in performance events. Check this list! Tails should have been docked within a few days of birth. Optional removal of front dewclaws fifth toes is done at the same time. The Boxer has no rear dewclaws. Ear cropping is customary and appropriate but not required--it is a matter of personal preference. Uncropped ears are permitted under the breed standard. If cropped, this procedure is done under general anesthesia, usually between six and nine weeks of age. If the puppy is taken before cropping, the breeder usually makes arrangements. The breeder also advises regarding aftercare and taping if ears are not already standing. Sometimes this is a lengthy process. In the male, both testicles should be descended into the scrotum. They should be in place by two to three months of age. A dog with undescended testicles may still make a fine pet, though he would be ineligible to compete in the conformation show ring. Consult your veterinarian for advice. Avoid the unusually quiet, inactive puppy, or the one that might shy away from you. This might mean a fault in temperament or even ill health. Papers the Seller Should Furnish: a. A three or four generation pedigree signed by the seller. There should be no extra charge for this. The pedigree preferably gives the color of the sire and dam, and the AKC registration numbers of each. The registration from the AKC, which is an official document identifying your puppy's individual registration number, sex, birth date, sire and dam, and name of the breeder s. There are two ways to register puppies for the first time: 1 Limited Registration If the puppy is not to be bred, and is being purchased only as a companion pet, the breeder may check off the Limited Registration option. This does register the puppy with the AKC. However, it does not allow any registration of offspring from the mature dog. The breeder and only the breeder can cancel the limited registration should the puppy at maturity be considered of breeding quality. Records the Breeder Should Furnish: a. Date and type of vaccines given. Depending on the type of vaccination program started, your veterinarian will advise you on following through. Vaccination protocols are evolving even among the medical professionals. Date and agent used for worming, if done. Do not worm your puppy without consulting your veterinarian. Avoid store-bought preparations which can be dangerous. Diet your puppy has been receiving. It is well to maintain the regimen begun by the breeder, especially while the puppy is adjusting to his new home. If changes are to be made. When he is an adult it will be wise to maintain your Boxer on two smaller meals a day. Further information: Bullenbeisser Friedrich Robert and his boxer, The Boxer is a hunting mastiff developed in Germany in the late 19th century from the now extinct Bullenbeisser , a dog of English Mastiff descent, and Bulldogs brought in from Great Britain. Its task was to seize the prey and hold it until the hunters arrived. In later years, faster dogs were favored and a smaller Bullenbeisser was bred in Brabant , in northern Belgium. The Brabanter Bullenbeisser is generally accepted as being a direct ancestor of today's Boxer. The club went on to publish the first Boxer breed standard in , a detailed document that has not been changed much since. During World War I , the Boxer was co-opted for military work, acting as a valuable messenger dog, pack carrier, attack dog , and guard dog. Taken home by returning soldiers, the dog was introduced to a wider audience and soon became a favorite as a companion, a show dog, and a guard dog. Boxer early genealogy chart Flocki, the first Boxer German citizen George Alt, a Munich resident, mated a brindle-colored female dog imported from France named Flora with a local dog of unknown ancestry, known simply as "Boxer", resulting in a fawn-and-white male, named Lechner's Box after its owner. This dog was mated with his own dam, Flora, and one of his offspring was a female called Alt's Schecken. George Alt mated Schecken with a Bulldog named Dr. Flocki was the first Boxer to enter the German Stud Book after winning the aforementioned show for St. Bernards in Munich , which was the first event to have a class specific for Boxers. Blanka von Angertor, Flocki's sister, was even more influential when mated with Piccolo von Angertor Lechner's Box grandson to produce the predominantly white particolored female dog Meta von der Passage, which, even bearing little resemblance with the modern Boxer standard early photographs depict her as too long, weak-backed, and down-faced , is considered the mother of the breed. Our great line of sires all trace directly back to this female. She was a substantially built, low to the ground, brindle and white particolor, lacking in underjaw and exceedingly lippy. As a producing female, few in any breed can match her record. She consistently whelped puppies of marvelous type and rare quality. Those of her offspring sired by Flock St. Salvator and Wotan dominate all present-day pedigrees. Combined with Wotan and Mirzl children, they made the Boxer. Breed name[ edit ] The name "Boxer" is supposedly derived from the breed's tendency to play by standing on its hind legs and " boxing " with its front paws. Brace's Pet Owner's Guide to the Boxer, this theory is the least plausible explanation. At that time, the spelling "baxer" equalled "boxer". Both the verb boxen [English "to box, to punch, to jab"] and the noun Boxer were common German words as early as the late 18th century. The term Boxl, also written Buxn or Buchsen in the Bavarian dialect, means "short leather trousers" or "underwear". The very similar-sounding term Boxerl, also from the Bavarian dialect, is an endearing term for Boxer. These dogs were the result from mixes of Bullenbeisser and other similar breeds. Bier beer probably refers to the Biergarten, the typical Munich beer garden, an open-air restaurant where people used to take their dogs along. The nickname "Deutscher Boxer" was derived from Bierboxer and Boxer could also be a corruption of the former or a contraction of the latter. This seems improbable. Any such action would likely result in a badly bitten if not broken leg. On the other hand, a German breeder of 40 years' experience states positively that the Boxer does not use his feet, except to try to extinguish a small flame such as a burning match. But a Boxer does box with his head. He will hit not bite a cat with his muzzle hard enough to knock it out and he will box a ball with his nose. Or perhaps, since the German dictionary translates Boxer as "prize-fighter", the name was bestowed in appreciation of the fighting qualities of the breed rather than its technique. Boxer is also the name of a dog owned by John Peerybingle, the main character in the best-selling book The Cricket on the Hearth by Charles Dickens , which is evidence that "Boxer" was commonly used as a dog name by the early 19th century, before the establishment of the breed by the end of that same century. A brindle Boxer with two white socks Brindle, fawn, and white Boxer puppies See also: Dog health A healthy Boxer puppy Leading health issues to which Boxers are prone include cancers , heart conditions such as aortic stenosis and arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy the so-called " Boxer cardiomyopathy " , [35] hypothyroidism , hip dysplasia , and degenerative myelopathy and epilepsy; other conditions that may be seen are gastric dilatation volvulus also known as bloat , intestinal problems, and allergies although these may be more related to diet than breed. An emerging health concern among boxers is Boxer Juvenile Kidney Disease JKD , where the kidneys do not develop normally during gestation and leads to chronic renal failure. There is strong evidence to suggest JKD is an inherited condition in boxers with research being undertaken by the University of Ohio to determine the gene mutation, as well as other work separately by the UK Boxer Breeder Council. Mortality due to infection increases significantly with increases in inbreeding. The breed is particularly predisposed to mast cell tumours, a cancer of the immune system. Because of their brachycephalic heads, they do not do well with high heat or humidity, and common sense should prevail when exercising a Boxer in these conditions. See also: Dog food Boxers need plenty of exercise, which means their diet should be high in quality calories. The main source of these calories should be lean animal protein, which include lean chicken, turkey, lamb, and fish. They sometimes appear at dog agility or dog obedience trials and flyball events. These strong and intelligent animals have also been used as service dogs, guide dogs for the blind, therapy dogs, police dogs in K9 units, and occasionally herding cattle or sheep. The versatility of Boxers was recognized early on by the military, which has used them as valuable messenger dogs, pack carriers, and attack and guard dogs in times of war. Notable Boxers[ edit ] Punch and Judy were awarded the Dickin Medal for conspicuous gallantry or devotion to duty while serving in a military conflict. Height: 26 inches Ratio: .This should give you their height. For example, 26 inches times 0. Using the other example, .Since each dog is going to be different, you need to look at their overall body condition rather than a weight range. Fortunately, there are body conditioning charts that you can use to figure out if your German Shepherd is at their ideal weight. Just look at them from the side and from above, feeling for ribs and pelvic bones when necessary. Younger dogs will also typically be on the thin side before they fully fill out as adults. Years of line breeding has produced several distinct types of Shepherds. Show dogs are known for a sloped back in which the back legs are shorter than the front. This unnatural formation can cause back and hip problems along with an abnormal gait. German Shepherds bred for show will also be thinner than their hardworking cousins. As you can see in this picture, this is a show-bred German Shepherd with an obvious curved back and short back legs. Working dogs, on the other hand, are bred for a sturdy, straight back so they can work long hours without getting sore. They tend to be thicker than show dogs and will, therefore, weigh more, even at the same height. As you can see in this picture, this dog has a straighter back and longer back legs, so it has been bred for working. Something else I wanted to mention here is that, according to some sources, Black German Shepherds are larger than their bi-colored cousins, despite being otherwise the same. So, if you have one of these rare and beautiful creatures, you can follow the same charts that were listed above. If your German Shepherd is diagnosed by a veterinarian as underweight or overweight for their age, then the first thing you should do is ask him or her to help you figure out the underlying cause of the problem. This will determine what should be done next. Do you have a giant German Shepherd? What about a tiny one? Comment below to tell us more about it! About Alexandra Animalso I was raised to be a dog person. My first Shepherd grew up as I did and wanted to be where I was at all times. I got my second dog as a 16th birthday present, and her loyalty for me was just as strong as my first. I hope that my contribution to Animalso will help others find dogs who give them that same unconditional love. American German shepherds have straighter backs then German shepherds. If you have a german shepherd and their lineages are close to their German roots they will have that arch in their back. Like many large breeds, a German Shepherd dog is not considered fully grown until they are about 18 months old. Female German Shepherds continue to fill out until they are around two years old, while the male German Shepherd growth rate continues until they reach two and a half years of age. Males are larger and require more time to fill out their chest and abdomen. As you can see by the German Shepherd weight chart, these dogs can continue to grow until they are three years old, but the majority of growth occurs within 24 months. If your GSD is older than 36 months and continues to put on weight, contact your veterinarian to ensure weight gain does not lead to obesity. How big should a 6-month-old German Shepherd be? A six-month-old German Shepherd puppy will be quite large, as many German Shepherds undergo massive growth spurts between two and five months old. By six months, a male German Shepherd will weigh 53 pounds on average, whereas a female will weigh about 46 pounds. How much bigger will my German Shepherd get? There are a few ways to gauge how much bigger a German Shepherd will get. First, check your puppy's age. If your GSD is younger than two years old, they definitely have room to keep growing! Another way to tell if your pup still has a lot of growing to do is their paw size. Do their paws look large compared to their legs and body? This is a classic adolescent feature of a dog and means your pup is likely still growing! Most of the time, a dog will not grow bigger than its larger parents. What is the size of a full-grown German shepherd? An adult male German Shepherd is typically 24 to 26 inches tall, while adult female German Shepherds are 22 to 24 inches tall, according to the American Kennel Club German Shepherd Standard. The estimated full-size varies significantly between sexes. In terms of weight, an adult male German Shepherd weighs anywhere from 75 to 90 pounds. A female German Shepherd weighs notably less at 55 to 70 pounds. Please keep in mind that these numbers are only estimates to give you an idea of how much bigger a German Shepherd puppy may get. Some dogs will be both smaller and larger than these weight ranges when fully grown due to a variety of genetic and environmental factors. Learn all about your puppy's physical characteristics, breed history, personality traits, and more in our comprehensive guide. How about some details regarding their feeding habits, behavior, medical needs, grooming regimen, and exercise requirements? In this section, you will find everything you need to know to keep them healthy and assist with things such as toilet training and teething. She will discipline them and make sure they learn to be independent. They then begin to go to the toilet independently and venture away from mom. At week 8, they play, can be housebroken, and bark when startled. The famous GSD ears will start to stand up, and you can begin leash and crate training. They must be handled and groomed and realize that human commands and dominance are the norm. During this time, the mother will nurse the pups until they are old enough to begin eating puppy mush , which is softened kibble. Allow puppies to eat as much as they like at each meal. At 6—8 weeks, their first shot from the vet is due. Smith, Shutterstock 12 weeks is a turning point for your pup. Their coordination will come on in bounds, as will their learning and social skills. They will be eager to learn but easily distracted, so have plenty of patience. If you become angry, it will stunt development if they become fearful of you. Your pup is officially into the juvenile period now. All of his puppy teeth should be developed by now and are normally very sharp. So, beware of your fingers when playing. At 12 weeks of age, puppies can start to eat three to four set meals a day with measured amounts. Purpose-made dog-approved chew toys are best, not teddy bears or old shoes. As they grow through this period between three and six months, GSD puppies are more juvenile than babies. They will be more boisterous and energetic. But on the plus side will feed easily, be more friendly with animals and people alike, and more than likely be housetrained if you have managed them correctly. They will be stubborn at this age when training and could ignore you, or not come when called. The best approach is to ignore any sassy attitude and only praise and fuss when back to being obedient. His internal organs and systems are fully developed and functioning as they should, while the skeleton is still growing. His full set of adult teeth should be present and correct. Your GSD is now becoming independent and will want to roam different areas and interact with their world on many more levels. Be aware that they could weigh 50 lbs at 6 months, so caution is needed with control and safety as they explore. He may also seemingly forget commands that he has been taught. It is best to ignore, not mollycoddle, any fearful reactions to new things to not reinforce the negative behaviors. By 6 months of age, you can reduce the feedings to three per day, now paying attention to the total calories consumed. Between the ages of 4—6 months, he will shed his puppy coat too. He might still be a bit goofy, gangly, and stubborn when it comes to training. German Shepherd females are reaching sexual maturity at this age. They may have their first estrus heat period. So, be mindful of letting them off the lead during this time if other dogs are around. At 9 months, your GSD can be tested for heartworm and treated if needs be. Speak with your vet about this for more detail. You can add small amounts of solid adult formula into the puppy food to get him used to the texture. Making it the optimal time to stimulate them as much as you can with obedience training and work activities. Your GSD should be comfortable in all situations, and with all types of company as their bond with humans should be well established. Their unique personality and quirks should be apparent and set them apart as your dog. They will have developed vocal and body language traits that you recognize and use for their needs. If male, he will be reaching sexual maturity and cocking his leg when urinating. He might also be looking to challenge dogs and humans for the title of pack leader. The key to cementing all your hard work so far is to be consistently firm with any boundaries he tries to push. By 12 months, they should be on adult formula only. German Shepherds stop growing between 2 and 3 years. This is when they fill out too. It starts to slow at around the age of 1, but he will continue to grow until he reaches maturity. During this time, they are considered to be adolescents. This is the same for their mental maturity too. This is the same for all German Shepherd types. Females tend to mature faster, both physically and mentally, than male German Shepherds. There are different stages within this time frame before maturity. And these are the neonatal stage 1—2 weeks , the transitional stage 2—4 weeks , the socialization stage 4 weeks to 3 months , the juvenile stage 3—6 months , and the adolescent stage 6 months to 2 years. Research has shown that neutering dogs can affect their growth. But how exactly? But early indications show that early neutering can increase the length of time that the bone grows. Meaning potentially taller dogs. But this also poses questions about whether this affects the joint alignment and whether it can cause any problems. And for the German Shepherd breed and his heightened propensity for hip dysplasia, this is a concern to be aware of. But waiting for full skeletal maturity also poses risks. Because neutering for females can reduce mammary cancer. If spayed before her first heat, it can eliminate the chances of this type of cancer altogether. As they will be able to offer you tailored advice for your German Shepherd. Dangers of Growing Too Quickly or Stunted Growth The dangers of growing too fast can affect their skeletal development. Conditions caused by growing too quickly are joint dysplasia and osteochondrosis. By feeding him a kibble that is designed for large-breed puppies will help control the rate at which his bones grow. This is because they have the optimum ratio of calcium and phosphorus levels in the food. So, always feed him large-breed puppy food during his developmental stage. This is most common in German Shepherds, but also in some Labrador Retrievers. It is an inherited disorder of growth hormone deficiency, and it will make the affected pooch always appear puppy-like. Growth Distinctions of Different German Shepherds. As the German Shepherd growth chart suggests, a German Shepherd dog reaches full size and adult weight after one year. A growth spurt can occur between 1. The result of this late growth is an up to 10 percent increase in height and weight. Although you can consider a German Shepherd fully grown by one year, there may be additional factors that influence the growth of German Shepherd dogs. Is Your German Shepherd Healthy? Improper development can occur for many reasons. It could be as simple as your dog responding poorly to their dog food. Your feeding schedule and portions might not be sufficient. Your dog could also have a basic nutritional deficiency that you need to correct. Yet, being underweight or overweight can signify serious health problems. Weight loss can occur when the syndrome develops. Dogs typically show signs of EPI at between six months and six years of age. Parasites Dogs are highly susceptible to parasites. Deworming medication helps to reduce the risk. Yet, almost all puppies experience a parasitic infection at least once. Upon infection, your dog is at risk of serious weight loss and other troubling symptoms. Diabetes Mellitus Diabetes mellitus can affect any breed but has an above-average occurrence in German Shepherds. These dogs need insulin daily to accommodate for the inability to metabolize sugars. If your German has diabetes, severe weight loss can occur in a short period. Diabetes typically affects canines that are four years or older. It is the most common cancer in German Shepherds. Up to three percent will develop HSA. In most cases, this condition sets in at around nine to 12 years. Dietary Deficiency Do you have your German Shepherd on a raw food diet? Puppyhood The first growth phase — puppyhood — has six development stages. During each of these stages, a puppy learns a lot of things. Neonatal Stage This period lasts from birth to 13 days. The puppy needs a lot of nursing from its mom because it is rather helpless. Its ears and eyes are closed, so it does not have any senses. The little pups should completely rely on their mothers for nourishment and care. By 2 weeks, they double their birth weight. They start crawling, and then their eyes and ears begin to open. The first milk teeth appear. The puppy can even stand up, but too unstably and shakily. This makes it possible for little ones to hear, smell, and taste. They even try to walk. Their baby teeth continue growing. The period between weeks is also called a transitional one. At the end of the third week, the motor skills start developing fast. The puppy can already control its temperature and body, namely, bowel movements. It begins to interact with its littermates. Nevertheless, the pup is still largely dependent on its mother. Though, you can interact with it. At the end of this period, the little cub is ready to explore the world. Its baby teeth are almost complete, and it can stand up more stably. It starts barking and growling a bit. The puppy grows quickly now. It actively interacts with its littermates. The baby dog can walk, and its baby teeth are complete. You can also consider the German Shepherd behavior stages from now. Its mental development starts because it discovers the world actively with its senses. Its walking improves, and it can make attempts to run, so it can even sometimes get in trouble. The puppy can start eating dog food. That is why it is important to begin weaning. The little one can recognize and greet its littermates and people, get interested in new things, and continue to explore the world. However, at this age, the first fear period can be experienced. Read our detailed guide about 6 week old German Shepherd puppy. It is the best period for taking your pet home. This period can be psychologically traumatic, so be careful not to expose the pet to direct sunlight because it may be afraid of it for its entire life. All the fears need your special attention. You need to nurture, but not encourage them. Read our detailed guide about 2 month old German Shepherd puppy. So, your puppy is three months old now. It is playful and active. Its teeth are complete. It is weaned and eats dog food. The feeding recommendation here is the overall one and a half cups, three times a day. It is also time to get your pet vaccinated against distemper and parvovirus. At the end of the third month, your little GSD can simulate its behavior after other dogs and humans. Training can start. Read our detailed guide about 3 month old German Shepherd puppy. Your puppy already has all its baby teeth, and adult canines and incisors begin to push through. It can even try to bite or nip you. The puppy coat begins to disappear and gets ready for replacement by the adult double-layer coat. You can see a racing stripe on its spine where the adult hair will grow. The puppy displays quick growth at this time, and it becomes stronger to withstand the possible fierce competition with its siblings if it is still staying with its family. It needs a lot of biting and chewing now for the correct growth of its adult teeth. Your pet needs consistent socialization and potty training now. After three months old, you should think about such vaccination as DHPP — distemper, hepatitis, parainfluenza, and parvovirus. The juvenile phase lasts from 3 to 6 months, and it can be divided into three stages by month. Continue socializing and start more substantial training. You can consult the German Shepherd weight chart here to see whether your pup develops properly. So, be attentive to the games you play with your pet. Some of them can be dangerous and traumatic because your puppy may not know how to manage its body during them. You can give it two cups of kibble totally three times per day because it needs a lot of nutrition to grow. DHPP and rabies vaccines are recommended at this age. Read our detailed guide about 6 month old German Shepherd puppy. Adolescence Phase Months German Shepherd males are thought to be grown-up when they are 3 years 36 months old. Females become adults when they are 2 years 24 months old. However, these criteria differ for every puppy. That is why the adolescence phase lasts from the end of the 6th month to the end of the second year of age 24 months on average. By the end of this phase, the puppy reaches its full size though it will continue slightly growing. Your dog can display testing boundaries, so disobedience is widely encountered if the dog is not properly trained. German Shepherds do not look like puppies anymore. Within this period, some dogs can display their second fear period at approximately months old , though to avoid long-lasting psychological trauma, you should ignore the fears. Some dogs may occasionally forget their skills that they have already acquired, so you may need to repeat training again. Here, the reinforced training is useful because some puppies can become entirely rambunctious. Your pet will also need more socialization since it reaches its sexual maturity, and some of its reactions can be pretty unexpected. Its sexual maturity continues, which may cause some aggression because of increases and decreases in hormones. The puppy does not gain weight so fast. Teething is finished. The German Shepherd starts looking more similar to an adult dog, with its standing up ears and well-developed muscles. The food your dog needs involves two or three cups total, given two times per day. Read our detailed guide about 7 month old German Shepherd puppy. It displays a lot of aggression. It can bark or lunge at other animals, kids, and unfamiliar people. A lot of training and reinforcement is needed. You can teach the youngster new tricks to deal with their aggression. It becomes a bit destructive, but be sure not to get angry or upset with it. It needs your patience and positive attitude. Such vaccines as DHPP and rabies are recommended at this age. It should also transit to adult food. Give it three or three and a half cups total twice a day. Read our detailed guide about 1 year old German Shepherd puppy. Years 1. This time is considered a transition period. The dog may have problems with fears and memory breakdowns. It may even forget how to do familiar things and should be trained again. However, its attention span is longer at this age, so it can have a more thorough obedience training. The dog should eat three or three and a half cups two times a day. Year 2 months — The Second Transition Phase This is one more transition period known as young adulthood. Your dog still displays some aggression. That is why they continue to need reinforcement, training, and socialization. It has already gained its athletic frame and strong muscle, and only several pounds are lacking for reaching its adult weight. In fact, you get a German Shepherd full-grown pet now. The DHPP vaccination is recommended at this age. Continue to feed your dog with three to three and a half cups in total twice per day. It has become a loyal and protective family pet or an obedient and enduring working dog. The young adulthood stage lasts from the second to the third year after the puppy was born. Its size is typical now for an adult dog. However, it may continue to grow slightly, but the changes are not noticeable at all. At this phase, you can also notice that your pet becomes more and more active. It needs a lot of exercise and training. A lot of physical activity is essential for the dog to stay in high spirits. The period between the second and third years of life is also called the adult growth stage. This is the time when your friend gets its excellent breed characteristics. It loves attention very much and continues to learn new things eagerly. The dog enjoys training sessions and strives for new experiences. It becomes calmer and more confident. Its hyperactivity slightly decreases. It displays a lot of self-control and discipline. Continue feeding your dog with three to three and a half cups twice per day. It will be its constant adult diet. Vaccination against rabies is recommended and required by authorities at this age. Seniority Phase This is the last phase of German Shepherd development. It may seem wonderful, but your dog can continue to slightly grow. The phase is divided into two periods — early senior years old and late senior years old. Unfortunately, you need to focus on its health rather than on training. Such health issues as hip dysplasia, joint pain, and decreased stamina can appear at this age. You need to have consultations with your vet more often. During this period, your dog does not change its weight and height considerably. Though, you can observe slight changes in weight. On average, these dogs live years. You need to attend to their health and comfort. The dog may remain energetic and playful, but it slightly slows down. It wants to rest more and gets much calmer. The animal may suffer from some pains, so it may need pain relievers for spine and joint problems and arthritis. It may also need nutritional supplements and changes to its diet. Special senior and sensitive stomach food may become the best choice. Avoid jumping and hard playing. Continuous veterinary monitoring is needed if some symptoms are worsening. The accepted proportion that is considered ideal is .The weight is usually not taken into consideration. If your pet does not correspond to this proportion, there may be a health issue you do not know about yet. That is why you need to monitor the parameters carefully. To be sure that everything is OK, multiply the length of your dog by 0. You will get the perfect height. However, there can be some divergences. If they are minor, you have nothing to worry about. The German Shepherd is rather thin, or even skinny. This results in bad proportions. The ideal weight of your German Shepherd is lbs kg for males and lbs kg for females. You can get either a heavy or obese dog, and it can be a result of overfeeding or certain health issues. How to Check the Weight of Your German Shepherd The simplest method to see whether your dog is underweight is to check whether the ribs are visible on the sides. If you can see that the shape of your dog reminds you of a barrel on the ribs, it means that it is overweight. If you cannot feel the ribs, but there is too much skin on the sides, your dog is overweight. However, if you feel the ribs and only a thin layer of skin, it is underweight. It does not matter whether your dog is underweight or overweight. In any case, it can cause health problems if you do not repair the situation. The best way to succeed is to make changes to the diet. If your German Shepherd is underweight, you should enrich the content of its food. However, do not make it eat if the dog does not want to. That can lead to more severe problems. Make a slow transition to food with higher fat content. Or you may even give your dog puppy food because it is rich in nutrients. If your pet is obviously overweight, the best thing is to cut off the food. However, you also need to do it step by step so that the dog finally can eat just half of the amount you have recently fed it. The adult dog has a height of inches cm at the shoulder and an average weight of pounds kg. Nevertheless, some German Shepherds can grow bigger and even reach pounds kg. You need to be sure about its proportions though to understand if your pet meets the standards. If you see some deficiencies, meet your vet for a more thorough evaluation. When does a German Shepherd stop growing? German Shepherd males are thought to be grown-up when they are 3 years old. Females become adults when they are 2 years old. How tall is a German Shepherd? The adult dog has a height of inches cm at the shoulder. An average male reaches inches cm in height, while an average female should be inches cm tall. The body of both males and females should be longer than their height. How big do German Shepherds get? How much does a German Shepherd weight? In general, an average male reaches pounds kg in weight, while an average female should be pounds kg heavy. This is a very strong and brave dog that can become a perfect guardian and protector. If you decide to take a GS puppy, you need to follow its growth stages accurately to be sure that it develops properly. You should follow a high-quality diet, provide your dog with a lot of exercise, and ensure its proper training and socialization. Your German Shepherd cannot stay healthy and active if it gets some health problems related to its weight or height. Sometimes, these issues are not obvious and understandable to the owner. That is why it is important to know the main development parameters of your German Shepherd growth stages to cope with possible challenges. We hope that this article, together with the weight and height chart, will become your effective and helpful guide. David W. I admire German Shepherds. They are magnificent dogs! I have been dealing with dogs, namely German Shepherds, throughout my life. I have been working part-time as a dog trainer and instructor for about 5 years, dealing mainly with German Shepherds. So I know a bit about these animals. Therefore, I decided to share my knowledge and experience about this fantastic breed. If you need help with advice and care tips or want to know more about German Shepherd dogs, welcome to this blog. However, there are certain breeds that are easier to train than others. Thankfully, German Shepherds fit into that category because they are very intelligent and quick learners. This includes house training , crate training , basic obedience commands as well as learning tricks. We recommend attending a puppy kindergarten class as part of your German Shepherd puppy socialization strategy. Once your pup knows their basic obedience commands, you can enroll them in Schutzhund training aka IPO. Partnership and teamwork between yourself and your dog are the basis for this type of training. Note that the Schutzhund environment is not a place for dogs with aggression issues, neither towards other dogs nor people! If they pass that initial level which includes a temperament test, they can move on to IPO 2 minimum age 19 months and IPO 3 minimum age 20 months. That said, protection dog trainers recommend starting training classes that include bitework and high jumps once your German Shepherd puppy is 12 months old. Dutch and Czech are two other languages that commands are frequently taught in. Stanley, my former long-haired GSD dog walking client, started going to Schutzhund training when he was a little over 12 months old. His owners practiced commands in German with him on a daily basis, and I remember getting a print out of his German commands as they asked me to use them on our walks as well. Lots, ha! German Shepherds need a minimum of 2 hours of physical exercise per day, but generally speaking, the more exercise you can provide your GSD with, the more they will thrive. Remember, German Shepherds are high-energy, athletic dogs bred to be active all day long, especially if they come from a working line! Physical Exercise Ideas for German Shepherds As far as physical exercise, this can be a mix of walks, runs, bike rides, fetch and playtime. This is Nala, one of my former pet sitting clients. She was crazy about frisbees and balls. One of my favorite ways of increasing the energy and calories a dog burns on a regular walk or hike is by using a doggie backpack. Mental Stimulation for German Shepherds Besides providing a good physical workout, dog backpacks also burn mental energy. As you probably know, bored dogs can quickly become destructive as they figure out ways of entertaining themselves. For example, chewing up your furniture and shoes, scratching doors, raiding your kitchen trash can or digging up your flower beds. So do yourself a favor and make sure your GSD gets plenty of exercise on a daily basis. Remember, a tired dog is a good dog, and that applies to German Shepherds as much as it does to any other dog breed! Former GSD client Remi pooped after a long walk. Bottom Line So, how big does a German Shepherd get? Well, German Shepherds are medium to large size dogs, so they can weigh anywhere between lbs. That said, the average expected weight for a male GSD is between lbs, and the average expected weight for a female GSD is between lbs. Both reach sexual maturity somewhere between months and are considered fully grown at about the 2 year mark. Keeping that in mind, your GSD breeder should be able to give you a good general idea of how big your German Shepherd puppy will grow to be! Helps ease anxiety in their new home. We love using Bully Sticks to help divert these unwanted behaviors. Check out more of our favorites on our New Puppy Checklist. We have nicknamed him after a social media yellow lab star Denver because he smiles. You cannot help but laugh when he smiles at you. It's almost as if he is laughing. He is very sweet and loving towards all dogs and people. Giallo will need some training since it's apparent whoever had him prior to his arrival at a local shelter was never taught much. Giallo has been learning since arriving. He is now crate trained although he definitely prefers not to be in one. He is nearly potted trained and has had no recent accidents. He has lots of energy to burn, so would be well suited for a household that is active, and that can play, run and enjoy outdoor activity. Giallo is starting to learn how to calm himself and enjoy a good chew on a bully stick. He is very affectionate, learning to not jump up, and has masterfully learned our routine. He has no aggressive behaviors and deserves a fabulous family that can give him the time and attention he needs. His ideal home will have a large fenced-in yard to romp in, another dog to play with, and ideally a stay-at-home or work-from-home individual if at all possible or a few days a week at doggie daycare to break up a week. Giallo would love a forever home if at all possible before the holidays. He had a wound on his nose, but nothing concerning, but it will take time to heal.
Design and features Setup Setting up the Puppy Cube was straight-forward. Once cables are plugged in, the rear panel may be reinstalled to give a nice clean look to the unit. The Puppy Cube arrives with a partially-charged battery. I charged the Puppy Cube for several hours until the battery-charge indicator light turned from orange to green. The only real problem I had setting up the Puppy Cube was finding a large enough flat surface upon which to test the system. Performance I am going to break this review into three parts: projector, projector and HID human interface device , and stand-alone media device. The Puppy Cube can project onto either a horizontal surface e. The integrated camera is only available when the Puppy Cube is projecting onto a vertical service. The camera is set to point straight out from the Puppy Cube. This means that unless you put the projector up on a stand or a stack of books, you only get a video of yourself from the shoulders down unless you hunch over. Projector When used as just a projector the Puppy Cube performs as well as most other p-native projectors. The image is bright enough for use in dimly-to-moderately-lit rooms. The auto-focus and keystone corrections function well. The Puppy Cube successfully displayed p, p, 2K, and 4K feeds. Videos played well at all resolutions using HDMI, but desktop images at 2K and 4K resolutions suffered from noticeable degradation when down-sampled to the native resolution of the projector. PowerPoint slides were acceptable at all resolutions. I was able to wirelessly display non-DRM videos e. I was able to connect to my UPnP server using the Video Lan app and play different movies stored on my server. The virtual mouse system worked better than the virtual keyboard in my initial testing. Once I abandoned my attempts at touch typing and went to hunt-and-peck style two-fingered typing my results improved dramatically. By default, the touch features are turned off when using the Puppy Cube to project onto vertical surfaces, but these features may be enabled through the onboard configuration system. Stand-alone media device I have mixed feelings about the Puppy Cube as a stand-alone media device. YouTube can be accessed via the browser, but it was frustrating to find such a common app to be incompatible. I was able to load and use Video Lan as mentioned above , but I was only able to play videos that were stored on my local server, rather than on remote servers. While I am primarily an iOS user in the mobile arena, I do have some familiarity with the Android UI from helping my sons and some less tech-savvy neighbors with their phones. My sons who live in both iOS and Android had fewer problems than I did, but they still had problems finding and using some of the controls. Additionally, the unit acts like there is a low power, continuous drain on the battery, which I attribute to the unit being in a suspend mode rather than being powered all the way down. This latter issue only crops up when I leave the Puppy Cube unused for several weeks. PuppyRobot is a Chinese company. The use of asynchronous text communications has hindered troubleshooting. Final thoughts I found the Puppy Cube an interesting product that has great potential. However, at this price-point, the native resolution of the projector is too low, the camera is poorly positioned, and the operating system on the unit I reviewed still needed some work. The basic display and touch features work well, but the stand-alone media player features could still use some work. The current incarnation is fine for basic family use, but an upgraded version could make the Puppy Cube common in the workplace. Currently, GMS-based apps are not available for download directly onto the device. These apps can also be screen casted to the projector when paired with any Android or iOS device. Reviewed in the United States on Reviewed in the United States on June 9, A really cool product you should not miss The media could not be loaded. It is for me very difficult to summarize the puppy cube, so bear with me - this review will be quite long. Remember the Sony Xperia Touch from a few years back? I sure do, and I also remember the eye-watering price tag of almost 2k USD and the abysmal lumens it could output. So I ended up never buying it. Fast forward a couple of years and puppy robot robotics? I couldn't stop myself from ordering one, and I'm damn glad I did! The touch functionality feels more responsive, the quality of the projected touchscreen feels fuller and more crisp the ANSI lumens compared to Sony's helps a lot. The customized version of Android looks a bit goofy, but it's not bad, and most apps run just fine. The perhaps biggest caveat is the lack of GMS, but more on that later. The projected touchscreen is 23 inches, and works on any flat surface you get the best color rendition if it's white. You can install apps from an app store called UpToDown, which is a pretty common third-party app store in Europe, apparently. Apps will automatically appear in English if you set the device to that language only two options anyway, English and Chinese. Apps that only work in portrait mode will require you to move the device, which can be annoying at times - landscape mode is definitely preferred. If you want, you can connect peripherals to the puppy cube. I'd recommend the latter, to which I've connected a mouse, keyboard, headphones and a PS4 controller, not to mention the included remote control. Here's where the real magic happens - if you tilt the puppy cube down, and have it project to a wall instead of a table, you can up to inches of screen. While you lose the touchscreen functionality if you make the screen size any larger than 23 inches, you can still use the peripherals just fine. What that means is that you get a computer the size of a big milk carton, and a screen as big as your entire wall. Load up any productivity apps and you're able to do real work on this thing. It will also auto focus, but by using the remote you can also manually fine-tune the focus as well. Or just watch Netflix, or YouTube. The puppy cube can work as a stand-alone device in horizontal mode, but also as a regular projector. The integrated speakers are decent, and the device can even act as Bluetooth speakers! And let's not forget that it is portable. The battery will last minutes according the the official information, which should be enough for at least a full-length movie and then some. But despite all the versatility, there are some cons too. The lack of GMS being the biggest one, but there are a few others too. I'll list both pros and cons below. But the pros certainly outweighs the cons. But if you just want a portable projector, then you might be better off buying something cheaper. The form factor is great and the virtual interface is really awesome and unique. However as a projector -- ummm. I was really disappointed when I connected the device to HDMI direct, there were slight delays and the audio was not always in synch with the picture3. My mac kept saying the device screen settings could not be determined and the resolution was all over the place both mirrored or as separate displays 4. The Google style app store was blah - and many of the apps are not supported by the deviceIn summary I had high hopes. The virtual interface is something special and very responsive, but if I can't use it as a proper projector I think it falls a bit short. I am hoping they can do some firmware updates to get it working better. If not I will have to give this very expensive product to my kids to use with their XBOX or something. I tote it around in a camera bag. Picture quality is fine for my eyes, and sound is at least on par with most TVs out of the box without requiring extra speakers. Picture is serviceable in a dimmed room night light on on normal white wall. The bad: The smart feature was hamstrung by the projector not being Google Play Store Seller was very up front about this and also reminded me many times, so no transparency issue here. Apps will be hard to come by, and I have issue where mirror casting YouTube from App from my iPhone SE ios13 update has no sound, but casting from youtube website works fine. Netflix app sometimes require you to use both touch and remote control to work. But it is a price worth paying for " on the go. Fantastic product that is an amazing piece of technology! I used this to present material in a confined area that only a short-throw projector would be able to do. Unfortunately, this product suffers around natural light. Enough of the bad.The fact that this projector is running Android is absolutely fantastic. Its' ability to project standing up to turn any surface into a tablet is incredible. Additionally, being able to project in a lay-flat mode onto a screen of up to " is FACT! Rather than write a review that reads like a book, I'll highlight my favorite features with bullets. I find it work best on hardwood floor, surprisingly. Though the touchscreen part doesn't work on a wall or any vertical surfaces you can use the remote for that and it is still very cool!
In the viral clip , shared on TikTok earlier in June by the pets' owner, under the username Bill, the two puppies can be seen sitting in their individual beds, sniping at each other with short high-pitched barks, while a third dog seems rather unimpressed and refuses to take part in the argument. Friday 25th of August Great Article eric Saturday 15th of April my recent rescue of a 3 year old supposed puppymill frenchie momma. I will probably have more questions later. It's not easy to take on the responsibility of a dog with behavioral quirks, but with some effort, you can help her become a happy and well-adjusted pet. Here are a few tips to get you started: Socialize her as much as possible: She might not have been socialized as much as she could've — ideally this is done when they're puppies, but you can still get behavior improvements in adult Frenchies through socializing. My Frenchie used to be scared of new people and always would bark at them.Supervise playtime: It's important to keep a close eye on interactions between the Frenchie and your pug, especially when toys are involved. If the Frenchie shows signs of aggression, such as growling or snarling, immediately remove the toy and redirect her attention to a different activity. Introduce new experiences gradually: If the Frenchie is not used to being around children, it's important to introduce her to your grandchild in a slow and controlled manner. Start by having the child sit quietly while you hold the Frenchie on a leash. If the Frenchie shows interest but no signs of aggression, you can gradually increase the amount of time they spend together. Seek professional help if needed: If the Frenchie's behavioral issues persist despite your efforts, it may be helpful to consult with a professional dog trainer or behaviorist. They can assess the situation and provide tailored advice and training techniques to help the Frenchie overcome her fears and insecurities. Remember, with patience, consistency, and positive reinforcement, you can help your Frenchie momma become a happy and well-adjusted member of your family. Best of luck! My biggest problem is Squirrels. We live on 2 acres and yes lots of squirrels. I am trying to figure out how to keep him from just taking off full speed after them. I even walk him on a leash no pull harness it terrifies me when takes off while being on a leash, he is very strong. I started making him stop walking before he takes off, before we start walking again. Our yard is fenced however he started running to fence or tree trying to climb it. I want him to have free time to run and play. It seems like you're on the right track with the no-pull harness, but they definitely aren't an easy fix to a problem like this. My Frenchie is the same way, she likes to chase squirrels, bunnies, and other animals in our backyard. She's actually got a few bunnies — I don't think the squirrel toy we have helps lol. Here are a few suggestions for your situation: Use a deterrent: Consider using a deterrent such as a motion-activated sprinkler or ultrasonic device to discourage squirrels from entering your yard in the first place. Impulse control training: Practice impulse control training by making your dog stop and refocus his attention before taking off after squirrels. Positive reinforcement training: Train your dog with positive reinforcement, teaching him a "leave it" command to ignore squirrels and focus on you instead. Avoid punishment: Avoid punishing your dog for chasing squirrels as this can lead to fear or anxiety around them. Instead, focus on redirecting his attention to more appropriate behaviors. Physical and mental stimulation: Provide plenty of physical and mental stimulation through regular walks, interactive toys, and training sessions to help reduce your dog's desire to chase squirrels. Long leash: Consider using a long leash to give your dog more freedom to move around the yard while still having control over him. Safe and secure outdoor space: Create a safe and secure outdoor space for your dog, such as a fenced area or an enclosed playpen, where he can run and play without chasing squirrels. Professional guidance: Consult with a professional dog trainer or behaviorist for additional guidance and support. It's important to remember that training takes time and patience, so don't get discouraged if progress is slow. With consistent training and reinforcement, your dog can learn to control his impulse to chase squirrels and enjoy his free time in the yard without the need for a leash. Thanks for your comment. We'll try to help you to the best of our abilities. We have tried turning our backs to her but that was not a success. Do you have any helpful tips? We need help! Here are some tips to help with your Frenchie's biting and jumping: Teach "off" or "down" command: When your Frenchie starts to jump or bite, firmly and calmly say "off" or "down" and redirect her attention to a toy or treat. Use positive reinforcement: Reward your Frenchie with a treat or praise when she listens and stops biting or jumping. Consistency is key in reinforcing good behavior. Provide plenty of exercise: Make sure your Frenchie gets enough exercise and playtime to help reduce her energy and prevent her from getting too excited and jumping or biting. Practice good playtime: Encourage your Frenchie to play with toys and not with people's feet or ankles. Provide plenty of chew toys and interactive toys to keep her engaged and occupied. Consider professional training: If these tips don't seem to work, you may want to consider professional training for your Frenchie to help modify her behavior and learn more positive ways to interact with people. I hope these tips help, and good luck with your Frenchie! FrenchieWiki Community. Although a playful pup sounds endearing, consider how many games of fetch or tag you want to play each day, and whether you have kids or other dogs who can stand in as playmates for the dog. Click here for more information on this characteristic French Bulldog Overview Bat-eared but oddly beautiful, the French Bulldog has a unique appeal. Aesthetically, other breeds undeniably are more glamorous and showy, but beauty is in the eye of the beholder and what many behold in the French Bulldog are the attributes that make this breed one of the best companion dogs in the world today. The French Bulldog is small but substantial in build with a powerful muscular body. He sports a short easy-care coat to accompany his easygoing personality. The Frenchie likes to play, but he also enjoys spending his days relaxing on the sofa. That love of play and relaxed attitude carry over into their training sessions. French Bulldogs are intelligent, and training them is easy as long as you make it seem like a game and keep it fun. They are free thinkers and are not an ideal breed for competing in obedience or agility although some have risen to the challenge. This freethinking approach can also lead to a stubborn nature, and if they decide to dig in their heels there is no budging them. Frenchies are loving companions who thrive on human contact. If you want an outdoor dog who can be left alone for long periods, the Frenchie is not the breed for you. This is a dog who enjoys lavishing love on his human companions as much as he loves the same treatment in return. They generally get along well with everyone, including children. They can, however, be territorial and possessive of their people, especially in the presence of other dogs. Socialization is a must for this breed, but with their easy companionship this is an enjoyable task. With a nature that is both humorous and mischievous, the French Bulldog needs to live with someone who is consistent, firm, and patient with all the antics and idiosyncrasies that make him both frustrating and delightful. They can be protective of their home and family and some will try to defend both with their life. French Bulldogs do not need a lot of room and do very well in apartments or small dwellings. A couple of minute walks per day should keep them from becoming overweight. Keep the Frenchie in cool, comfortable surroundings. This is not a dog who can stay outside on a hot day. French Bulldogs are wonderful companion dogs with a gentle nature. If you work at home, the Frenchie is happy to lie at your feet all day or follow you from room to room. Hip dysplasia can exist with or without clinical signs. Some dogs exhibit pain and lameness on one or both rear legs. As the dog ages, arthritis can develop. Dogs with hip dysplasia should not be bred. Ask the breeder for proof that the parents have been tested for hip dysplasia and found to be free of problems. Brachycephalic Syndrome : This disorder is found in dogs with short heads, narrowed nostrils, or elongated or soft palates. Their airways are obstructed to varying degrees and can cause anything from noisy or labored breathing to total collapse of the airway. Dogs with brachycephalic syndrome commonly snuffle and snort. Treatment varies depending on the severity of the condition but includes oxygen therapy as well as surgery to widen nostrils or shorten palates. Allergies: Allergies are a common problem in dogs. The medication for inhalant allergies depends on the severity of the allergy. It is important to note that ear infections often accompany inhalant allergies. Hemivertebrae: This is a malformation of one or more vertebrae that causes it to be shaped like a wedge or triangle. This malformation can occur on its own or with other vertebrae malformations. Hemivertebra can cause no problems, or it can put pressure on the spinal cord. This can lead to pain, weakness, and or paralysis. There is no treatment for the condition unless there is spinal cord pressure. It is caused when the patella, which has three parts — the femur thigh bone , patella knee cap , and tibia calf — is not properly lined up and slips in and out of place luxates. This causes lameness or an abnormal gait the way the dog moves. The rubbing caused by patellar luxation can lead to arthritis, a degenerative joint disease. There are four grades of patellar luxation ranging from grade I, an occasional luxation causing temporary lameness in the joint, to grade IV, in which the turning of the tibia is severe and the patella cannot be realigned manually. This gives the dog a bowlegged appearance. Severe grades of patellar luxation may require surgical repair. When the disc pushes into the spinal cord, nerve transmissions are inhibited from traveling along the spinal cord. Intervertebral Disc Disease can be caused by trauma, age, or simply from the physical jolt that occurs when a dog jumps off a sofa. When the disc ruptures, the dog usually feels pain and the ruptured disc can lead to weakness and temporary or permanent paralysis. In some cases surgery can help, but it must be done within a day or so of the injury. You may also want to ask your veterinarian about physical rehabilitation. Treatments such as massage, water treadmills and electrical stimulation are available for dogs and can have excellent success. It affects the clotting process due to the reduction of von Willebrand factor in the blood. Occasionally blood is found in the stool. This disorder is usually diagnosed in your dog between the ages of 3 and 5 and cannot be cured. However, it can be managed with treatments that include cauterizing or suturing injuries, transfusions of the von Willebrand factor before surgery, and avoiding certain medications. Cleft Palate : The palate is the roof of the mouth and separates the nasal and oral cavities. It is made up of two parts, hard and soft. A cleft palate has a slit that runs bilaterally or unilaterally and can range in size from a small hole to a large slit. A cleft palate can affect both the hard and soft palate separately and together and may cause a cleft lip. Puppies can be born with cleft palates, or a cleft palate can occur from an injury. Cleft palates are fairly common in dogs, but many puppies born with a cleft palate do not survive or are euthanized by the breeder. The only treatment for a cleft palate is surgery to close the hole, although not all dogs with a cleft palate require the surgery. It is important to get a diagnosis and treatment recommendation from your veterinarian. Elongated Soft Palate: The soft palate is the extension of the roof of the mouth. When the soft palate is elongated, it can obstruct airways and cause difficulty in breathing. The treatment for Elongated Soft Palate is surgical removal of the excess palate. Health clearances prove that a dog has been tested for and cleared of a particular condition. You can confirm health clearances by checking the OFA web site offa. Regardless of how healthy your dog is when you first bring them home, you should prepare for any issues that may come up throughout their life. French Bulldog Care French Bulldogs do not need a lot of exercise. They have fairly low energy levels, although there are exceptions to every rule. To keep their weight down, however, they need daily exercise through short walks or play times in the yard. Many French Bulldogs enjoy playing and will spend much of their time in various activities, but they are not so high energy that they need a large yard or long periods of exercise. This breed is prone to heat exhaustion and should not be exercised in hot temperatures. Limit walks and active play to cool mornings and evenings. When training a French Bulldog, take into account that although they are intelligent and usually eager to please, they are also free thinkers. That means they can be stubborn. It is important to crate train your French Bulldog puppy even if you plan to give him the freedom of the house when he reaches adulthood. French Bulldog Feeding Recommended daily amount: 1 to 1. NOTE: How much your adult dog eats depends on his size, age, build, metabolism, and activity level. It almost goes without saying that a highly active dog will need more than a couch potato dog. For more on feeding your Frenchie, see our guidelines for buying the right food , feeding your puppy , and feeding your adult dog. The skin is loose and wrinkled, especially at the head and shoulders, and has a soft texture. French Bulldogs come in a variety of colors, including fawn, cream, various shades of brindle — a coat patterned with specks and streaks of light and dark markings — such as black brindle and the striking tiger brindle, and brindle and white, known as brindle pied. French Bulldogs can be any color except solid black, liver a solid reddish-brown with brown pigmentation on the lips and nose , mouse a light steely gray , and black with white or tan. Run from any breeder who tells you that a particular color is rare and thus worth more money. Having your heart set on a fawn female is a recipe for disappointment when the litter contains only cream and brindle males. French Bulldogs are fairly easy to groom and need only an occasional brushing to keep their coat healthy. They are average shedders. Begin grooming your Frenchie at a young age and teach your puppy to stand on a table or floor to make this experience easier on both of you. When you are grooming your Frenchie at any stage of life, take the time to check for any scabs, skin lesions, bare spots, rough, flaky skin, or signs of infections. You should also check ears, eyes and teeth for any discharge or bad smells. Both are signs that your Frenchie may need to see the veterinarian. Clean ears regularly with a damp warm cloth and run a cotton swab around the edge of the canal. Never stick the cotton swab into the actual ear canal. If the edges of the ears are dry, apply mineral or baby oil sparingly. The oil can also be used on a dry nose. French Bulldogs do not naturally wear their nails down and will need their nails trimmed regularly. This prevents splitting and tearing, which can be painful for the dog. Keep the facial wrinkles clean and dry to prevent bacterial infections. Whenever you bathe your dog, take the time to thoroughly dry the skin between the folds. Bathe your French Bulldog monthly or as needed, and use a high-quality dog shampoo to keep the natural oils in his skin and coat. French Bulldogs should be easy to groom, and with proper training and positive experiences during puppyhood, grooming can be a wonderful bonding time for you and your Frenchie. That said, no dog should ever be left alone with a young child. When they are socialized to them during puppyhood, Frenchies can get along well with other dogs and cats. French Bulldog Rescue Groups French Bulldogs are often acquired without any clear understanding of what goes into owning one, and these dogs often end up in the care of rescue groups, in need of adoption or fostering. All dogs will need veterinary care at some point in their lives. French Bulldog Breed Organizations Finding a reputable dog breeder is one of the most important decisions you will make when bringing a new dog into your life. Reputable breeders are committed to breeding healthy, well-socialized puppies that will make great companions. They will screen their breeding stock for health problems, socialize their puppies from a young age, and provide you with lifetime support. On the other hand, backyard breeders are more interested in making a profit than in producing healthy, well-adjusted dogs. They may not screen their breeding stock for health problems, and they may not socialize their puppies properly. As a result, puppies from backyard breeders are more likely to have health problems and behavioral issues. Below are breed clubs, organizations, and associations where you can find additional information about the French Bulldog. The following program contains material that is just too cute. Big Brother Instinct : Finn the Mini-Aussie Shepherd pup comes to Jojo's rescue after hearing her whimpering when she wanders too far away from the other pups while trying to follow Rosie. Usually when he sniffs out a treat, Xena shoves him away and snatches it from him. Until near the end of the episode, where Roo successfully fights to keep it. While it's nice to see them get new, loving homes, it's also a bit sad to see the group of animals you spent an hour watching having to go their separate ways. Content Warnings : Parodied: "The following program contains material that is just too cute. Cosmo the Russian Blue kitten starts out like this, but as time goes by, he becomes more adventurous. In more or less the same vein as Cosmo, Atlas the Norwegian Forest kitten was this, too. One of the characteristics of the French Bulldog is their large, upright ears. But believe it or not, these dogs are born with their ears flat. They look much more like English Bulldogs before their ears spring up! The time it takes for their ears to stand up often correlates with the puppy teething period. Some puppies may show signs of their ears perking up within a few days, but this is not the norm. Why do French Bulldog's ears stand up? Back when people were trying to breed English Bulldogs, there was a set of standards for the most desirable dogs. One of the undesirable traits was upright ears. This meant dogs with "faults" like being too small or having upright ears were more often classed as "toy bulldogs" and traded to France. Over the years, the upright ears became synonymous with the toy bulldogs and emerging French Bulldog breed until eventually, it became the standard. So one undesirable trait for one dog became a much-treasured feature of another! How long do French Bulldogs live for? The French Bulldog lifespan is fairly average and you can expect your dog to live for at least a decade. Some dogs can even make it into their early teens. Generally, the average lifespan of a french bulldog is around years. Sadly, they are not an exceptionally long-lived dog. This is partly due to the fact that Frenchies are prone to many health problems, so it is unsurprising that some individuals have a shorter lifespan. But if your pooch is exercised regularly and fed a high-quality diet that combats the conditions the breed is prone to, you can expect your pooch to live a long and happy life. The famous French artist forever linked with the Moulin Rouge. The dog had a pretty interesting owner too. More specifically, Nottingham. They were popular companions for lace makers and when they moved to France to find work after the industrial revolution, the little dogs went with them. They are so top-heavy because of their large head and front-end, they have a tendency to sink. Facts about famous Frenchies Popular influencers French Bulldogs have been owned by plenty of celebrities over the years, but nowadays they can even be celebrities themselves. Manny the bulldog is one of the most famous dogs on Instagram with over a million followers. The ill-fated Romanov dynasty also had a fondness for Frenchies. Grand Duchess Tatiana was given a Frenchie puppy in and named them "Ortipo". The pup would even be honoured with a likeness created by Faberge. The pooch would follow the family into exile along with two other dogs. The poor pup met as sad an end as the royal family. One brave Bulldog When we think of dogs serving in the armed forces, we usually think of Springer Spaniels as sniffer dogs, or German Shepherds working as guard dogs. But did you know that during the First World War there was a brave little Frenchie called Mutt who worked as a delivery dog on the Western Front. He belonged to the YMCA and delivered cigarettes to soldiers and boosted morale with his love and affection. He was even wounded twice in the line of duty. Many animals were left behind when the war ended, but lucky little Mutt was smuggled on board a ship by a kind soldier. Even when the furry stowaway was found, he was saved from being tossed overboard because the soldier insisted he would go overboard with the dog. Mutt made it safely to New York and lived a few more years in comfort before passing away due to natural causes. An artist's muse Plenty of artists have taken inspiration from the adorable Frenchie over the years such as Faberge, Toulouse-Lautrec, and even Andy Warhol. He owned two Frenchies, both called Moujik. Moujik II was the only dog ever painted by Andy Warhol, and his portrait was the last painting he completed before his death. French Bulldog puppies French Bulldog puppies are well known for their high price tag. This is partly due to their popularity, but also because of how much work a good breeder must put in for healthy dogs. Not only must parent animals be screened for various health issues, Frenchies are notoriously difficult to mate and rarely give birth naturally. This is because of the dogs' small hips, which make successful mating difficult for males and natural birthing a problem for females. On top of that, Frenchies usually have very small litters of only 3 pups. These dogs are also known to take longer than average to housetrain, so be patient and persistent. French Bulldogs are notoriously good at understanding your tone, and are sensitive souls. When do French Bulldogs stop growing? Your French Bulldog puppy should stop growing between the age of 9 and 12 months. However, they will continue to put on weight for a few months afterwards. Their heads might also change shape and become squatter and wrinklier. By the time your dog is 2 they should be fully grown and have reached their adult weight and shape. If your pooch is packing on the pounds after their 2nd birthday, they will be on their way to being overweight. Obesity brings with it a lot of secondary health conditions, but it is especially bad for Frenchies as the breed is predisposed to suffering with luxating patellas dislocating kneecaps. Too much weight will put more strain on their fragile knees, so make sure your pup is walked regularly and fed a healthy diet to stay slim. French Bulldog names There are hundreds of potential names for your new friend. You could take some French inspiration when naming your pet, such as Bijou or Gaston, or you could even name your dog after one of the many famous Frenchies throughout history. French Bulldog vs Boston Terrier Telling the difference between these breeds can be tricky, as they look incredibly similar and even share ancestors. French Bulldogs are more muscular and stocky compared to the Boston Terrier, standing slightly taller and having broader, more square-shaped heads. They also have more rounded ears. Other than that, these dogs are similar in their size, lifespan, and grooming requirements. Frenchie lifestyle How much space do French Bulldogs need? Not a lot! French Bulldogs are not an active or energetic dog and they have low exercise needs. They do need daily walking to keep them healthy and to prevent obesity, but it only needs to be a short stroll once a day. How much exercise does a French Bulldog need? As we said, Frenchies are not an active or energetic breed by any stretch of the imagination. A short walk around the block once or twice a day is perfectly fine for these pups. Because of their short noses, they overheat easily, so your pooch is best kept at home in hot weather to prevent illness. Here are some ideas on how to protect your pup from the heat. Meanwhile, you might want to buy some boots or a coat for your pooch come winter, because these dogs are just as susceptible to the cold. So when it comes to exercising throughout the seasons, stay out the sun, and bundle up for winter. Do French Bulldogs have health problems? Yes, sadly French Bulldogs are predisposed to a few health problems. These include: Breathing problems. Now reading: Are French bulldogs good with kids? Share December 08, Are French bulldogs good with kids? Frenchie lovers are absolutely obsessed with these pint-sized pups. With those adorable bat ears and short noses, they have crept into the hearts of many families worldwide. But are French Bulldogs good with kids? The answer is a resounding yes! Full-grown, they only stand about 12 inches at the shoulder, weighing between 16 and 28 pounds. This makes them the perfect companion dog for small humans. While larger dogs can be overwhelming, Frenchies seem much less intimidating and get along well with younger kids. French bulldogs have a lot of heart and personality. They are mischievous, especially as puppies, and will entertain kids with little effort. And French bulldogs, especially younger ones, are the same. They have an extremely playful nature, running around and exploring their immediate vicinity. They like to smell and soak up everything they see and hear. Frenchies love learning new games and, with proper training, will gladly play a game of fetch in the backyard - keeping your kids and puppy entertained. Again, this is perfect for younger children who would easily be scared by a large, loud dog in their space. This is also one of the reasons why many people living in apartment blocks or quiet neighborhoods choose to keep this breed as a family pet. While other dogs start barking as soon as they get excited, a French bulldog will keep chewing on a toy, run after its playmate, or use soft, gentle barks to grab attention. If you have a young family, live in an apartment, and are looking for a quieter dog, opting for a Frenchie is a good idea. And playtime is the perfect way to do that. French bulldogs, too, are energetic. Whereas some smaller breeds, like the English Bulldog, can be rather lazy, choosing to nap in a sunny spot for most of the day, Frenchies enjoy a run-around or a game of fetch. They need to be distracted and entertained for short periods, where they can get rid of excess energy but not run around the entire day. According to some sources, a french Bulldog only needs about 60 minutes worth of exercise daily to keep them at a healthy weight and mentally in a good space. As regards their attention span, French Bulldogs can focus on a task, making them perfect for training from young. These attributes make them perfect companions for young kids. They can be left together in the backyard, exploring and playing together for a few hours. Then go down for a nap simultaneously, giving the entire household some quiet time. They talk at a high pitch, making them louder than you thought a human could be. And this can really make your dog excited. They bounce up and down and start barking. Often struggling to contain themselves, an overexcited dog could hurt a young child, knocking them over, scratching them, or even nipping at them. But Frenchies are known for their gentle nature. When they get excited, they seem to put a smile on their faces and drop their head down to the same height as their playmates, seeking attention and approval. They are content with playing in a large pen indoors or a room dedicated to playtime. By now, I'm sure that you get the point. Although not all dogs are the same - there are more than enough reasons to welcome a French bulldog into your family. But you need to ensure that everyone, including your puppy, knows what their role is and what is expected of them. French bulldogs can have an alpha dog mentality, asserting their position as the head of the pack. They do this by keeping others around them in check, which could be the case with their owners and young children. So here are just a few things you need to do to train your puppies when welcoming them into your pack. This can easily be done with some basic command training and positive reinforcement. Train your pup to sit before feeding it a snack, to wait before running in our outside of the house, or even to perform a more advanced task like fetching his leash before going on a walk. As they grow together, they will view each other as companions, not adversaries fighting for your attention. French bulldog puppies will sense the love they receive from young children and form a strong bond with them. This loyalty will serve them well later on if your child needs help or defending from any unwanted attention. As your children have friends over, your Frenchie will also get used to having other children around the house. This is extremely good for their social skills. And keeping up with playtime, nap time, family time, and relaxation can be overwhelming. Imagine having your new puppy on a different schedule from your new baby. Oh boy. So, include your puppy in the family activities as much as possible. When going to the park for a picnic, choose a dog-friendly location. Thinking of your next family vacation? Get a dog-friendly Airbnb. Take it as far as feeding your dog - although separately from your family - simultaneously. This will help them view your family as a pack they are part of and have a place in. Here are a few points you should teach your young children. So while you want your children to spend quality time playing with their dog, you must teach them to play gently. Something that children often forget is that as they grow, their strength and stamina increase. What seemed gentle a year or two ago can quickly turn into rough play, possibly hurting their dog. French bulldogs are prone to back issues, often suffering from Intervertebral disc disease IVDD 1 Damage to their spinal cord could be irreversible and cause a lifetime of problems. Teach your children not to pick the french bulldog puppy up too often and be careful when doing so. Do not confuse their small size for being a pushover around feeding time. They will nip at anyone trying to take away their snack or bowl of food. Make sure your child knows and understands this. At feeding time, it is best to leave your puppy alone. Teach them to clean up their dogs' litter and to care for their physical needs by playing with them or taking them on a walk. Buy a walking leash for your puppy and introduce it to him from an early age. Then teach your child that it is their responsibility to get the leash and get their puppy ready before every walk. This also gives children a sense of responsibility. Showing caution French bulldogs are a flat-faced breed and while this may appear very cute to others, it can be a source of worry for them. Like other dogs with similar features, they struggle to regulate their air intake, especially on hot days. Their short face structure often means they develop difficulties breathing and filtering out dirty air particles. So be careful when taking your pup out for a walk or a run in the park. Choose the cooler times of the day, avoiding the midday heat. This will help them to get enough oxygen in. A final word Frenchies are extremely well-rounded pets for kids of all ages. They have easygoing personalities and adapt well to all environments. As with most dogs, they benefit from obedience training and really flourish when they feel cared for. Article sources:. What to do if your Frenchie has food agression? There must be some distance between the owner and the dog in the family hierarchy. You, as the owner, must be on top of this hierarchy. You have to be the alpha dog. You and only you get to decide what is his and what is yours. You have the privilege to decide which area is yours and which belongs to your dog. But when your dog believes he gets to decide, that means he thinks he is above you on the hierarchy. Turning this around is not an easy task, but also not impossible. Do not tell him off when he is aggressive over food, and do not fight with him. You have to behave similarly to him. Create situations in which your dog cannot participate. For example, he is not allowed to approach you or the family table while you are eating. When he approaches anyway, tell him off and chase him away. Another situation is when you are resting on your couch, and he is trying to approach you. Do not let him jump on the couch except when you give verbal permission to do it. Feeding times: Humans eat first at all times! Make him understand that the food is yours, and he only gets the leftovers. That will indicate to him that he is not the alpha dog, and he must wait for his turn. Also, make him sit by the door while you prepare his food, and even when you put his bowl off the floor. Only let him approach the food when you give verbal permission to do it. If he is impatient, you can try growling back at him. Make these rules unbreakable. Be consistent, and stay strong mentally. By the time he will get your point and will start to behave well.
