They are amazing breeders, and the puppies are so beautiful and healthy. Chubba Chubba Choo is almost a 1. Jason and Michelle run a successful business with healthy pups that are loved from day one. I highly recommend them!!! His puppies are gorgeous and I promise your heart will tug at you to bring more than one home. The mama dogs were so happy, sweet, pretty and just wanted your attention. The puppies were adorable, healthy and competing for you to play with them. Not one of those dogs ignored you and didn't want to be the center of attention. You could tell they all had great personalities and were very social. Puppychase is Bulldog Heaven! I was very satisfied with the purchase of our puppy. The environment is clean, cool and does not smell. That's hard to accomplish with so many dogs. The Bulldogs are well cared for and the property shows they are a top priority. I can't imagine not being pleased with any dog from Puppychase. The only regrets I have are not being able to take more puppies and I wish I could have seen the male Bulldog in person. I didn't even think to ask. Maybe next time! I have had 3 Bulldogs from PuppyChase. Chester 13 yrs old, Henry 8, and Gus 15 wks. Chester died 2 wks ago. Jason is so knowledgeable and loves his Bulldogs. The health and personalities of his dogs are perfect! The hardest part is picking which one. He uses a flight nanny to ensure the safety of these little guys which allows families from all over U. S A to have a dog from PuppyChase. What a beautiful home and kennel he has in Georgia. Thank you Jason and Michelle! Keep up the great work with breeding English Bulldogs and giving families and experience of a lifetime of owning and loving these beautiful dogs!!! I would highly recommend. Jason and Michelle are dedicated to ensuring their pups and litters are taken care of! Their pups have the best disposition!! Exceptional customer service and will go above and beyond to accommodate your needs. New to the breed? Will definitely make our way back to PuppyChaseKennels. I am familiar with common and uncommon health problems they may face so when my boyfriend and I decided we were ready to adopt our own english puppy finding a reputable breeder that prioritizes health was most important to us. Erica and Mitch of Bruiser Bulldogs are just that. They are experienced, ethical and quality breeders. I was referred to them by my friend that I trust after I saw their gorgeous healthy puppy. Our Puppy Primrose is the light of our lives! Bruisers was there to assist us every step of the way. We would highly recommend Bruisers Bulldogs to anyone looking for their own happy, healthy pup! Leah H. We were lucky to have come across Bruiser Bulldogs and even more so the fact that they were near our family and hometown made it even better. We have had Clementine Callie for four months now, and she is a wonderful dog. Her personality is amazing, and I think part of it is breeding and the other part is Erika and her family lovingly raising the puppies in their home with plenty of attention and snuggles. I also was impressed that, rather than send the puppies out right at 8 weeks, Erika kept ours for a few extra weeks because she was tiny and not read to leave her mom yet. It's that care that differentiates Bruisers from other breeders. Emily R. Erica was easy to work with thru the entire process from application to adopting and now beyond as we host our new family member, Chief. Her on-call support and willingness to provide open, honest advice to all of our questions and concerns continues to be appreciated. We would highly recommend Bruiser Bulldogs to anyone looking for an English Bulldog to join their family. Elizabeth W. Lady L. They are experienced, responsive and knowledgeable about all things bulldog related. They went above and beyond for us and are truly dedicated to all of their pups! We love our little girl so much and would recommend Bruiser to anyone looking for a healthy beautiful bully. Jonathan E. Erica and Mitch are trustworthy, excellent communicators, fair, passionate, and produce the best bulldogs. We were at the top of the waiting list for months and Erica reached out every litter to see if we were finally ready for a bulldog. When we were, she was very easy to work with. Her knowledge on bulldogs is outstanding. We had many questions on the process and she always knew what was best for the puppy. We've had Penny formerly Blair for two months and she is very healthy, energetic, playful, and sweet. She is great with other people and dogs. We are so happy with our pup. When we are ready for bulldog 2, we will only consider Bruiser Bulldogs. Mitch C. Bowser was born April and is an integral part of our family. When we were first exploring English Bulldog breeders our biggest concern was the overall health of the dogs. We decided to work with Erica at Bruiser Bulldogs because we liked their focus on improving the breeds breathing abilities and the fact that the puppies are raised within her family environment before coming home with their new owners. Bowser also breaths clearly and our vet was impressed with his overall health from the moment we brought him home. All that said we know English Bulldogs have a predisposition to many health issues and that his current health can not predict the future. With that In mind its important to start with a breeder that open to answer any of your questions as Erica has ours, and that strongly believes in improving the breeds overall health profile. Adam B. My sister ended up finding Bruiser Bulldogs and we knew right away that they were the breeder for us. In September we ended up driving 9 hours to pick up two Bruiser bulldog puppies- one for my husband and I and one for my mom. Jackson and Penelope have been nothing but a joy. They are both very athletic and healthy. They are also HUGE snugglers and always want to be with you. It is an absolute pleasure having these two bullies in our lives! Erica is very knowledgeable about the breed. She is very hands on throughout the process and is just overall a kind and honest person to work with. With all that being said I cannot recommend Bruiser Bulldogs enough! Collyn C. One of the reasons we chose Bruiser Bulldogs was due to the claims about breeding for health. During our first visit at our vet's office, he told us that our pup was one of the healthiest English bulldogs he had ever seen. He is healthy, happy and social. Would recommend to anyone. Christina S. We seen our dog on their website and sent them an Email. Mitch called us and personally walked us through the process and made sure we had the right dog for our family. We couldn't be happier when we picked up our dog Ramsey, Erica made sure we had everything we needed and then some. They are truly amazing people who breed truly amazing dogs! Jim T. Not all mini Goldendoodles are equal, there are a few different versions to choose from each having a little different genetic background based on the pups parents. We will explain all the differences in Mini Goldendoodle puppies and how they are bred below. We raise all versions of the mini goldendoodle breed. F1 Mini Goldendoodle Pups. A F1 puppy is also known as a First Generation puppy. The puppies mother is a Golden Retriever and the pups dad is a Mini Poodle. This version of mini goldendoodle usually has soft wavy or curly puppy fur. They will shed until they lose their puppy fur, after shedding they will shed a lot less, but will shed. This version is partially hypoallergenic and usually requires low maintenance. F1 mini goldendoodles usually need to be groomed every 6 months along with daily brushing to keep their curly hair from matting and getting tangled. The dogs usually grow up having great temperaments similar to golden retrievers. They usually get about inches high at the shoulder and range in weight from pounds. F1b Mini Goldendoodle Pups. An F1b is known as a second-generation mini goldendoodle with the pups mother being already an F1 Goldendoodle and the pups dad being a mini poodle also. So the difference between F1 and F1b is that the mom is not a golden retriever but an actual F1 Goldendoodle. They also have very soft curly hair but with almost no shedding. This F1b version is semi-hypoallergenic and a better choice for anyone who has pet allergies. The F1b also should be brushed on a daily basis but will need to be groomed more frequently then a F1. A 6 to 8 week grooming schedule is recommended to keep their coat in perfect condition. F1b Mini goldendoodles get around 18 to 20 inches tall at the shoulders and range between pounds in weight. F1bb Mini Goldendoodle Pups. An F1bb goldendoodle is also known as a third-generation mini goldendoodle. This mini goldendoodle version has a coat more similar to a poodle than of a golden retriever. This is because the pup is more of a poodle than a retriever. Making it the very best version for anyone with pet allergies. A 6 to 8 week grooming schedule is required to help prevent knots or matting. This version is super intelligent and loving, and usually seems to have more energy than the other versions of Mini goldendoodles. This version is usually smaller in size, weighing around pounds and only getting inches tall at the shoulders. The smaller size makes them a great size for smaller homes and apartments. As long as they are well-socialized, Miniature Goldendoodles tend to make excellent family companions. They tend to get along well with children, other dogs, and other pets. Although they will alert you of strangers at the door, they tend to warm up quickly as they are more interested in making friends and receiving attention. Mini Goldendoodles are highly adaptable dogs. Their smaller size makes them a great fit for apartment living or for bigger homes with yards where they can run. As long as they get enough daily exercise, mental stimulation, and attention, they can adapt well. These little dogs tend to do well in just about any climate. However, like any dog, they are sensitive to heat. Due to their smaller size, you may need to gear up with some dog-friendly winter gear when temperatures start falling. This means they can be prone to developing separation anxiety if you do not work with them on it early on. Instead, make sure your new Mini Goldendoodle puppy has an active role in your life. If you do need to leave them alone for a bit, make sure they have some comforting toys or challenging puzzles to keep them from getting bored. Daily brushing is recommended to remove tangles and prevent mats. Bathing is occasional and can often be relegated to the dog groomer that is recommended you visit every weeks. The groomer can help handle some of this during visits, but you will still need to do some maintenance at home between visits. Nail trims once or twice monthly keep nails from growing too long. Weekly ear checks with careful cleanings as needed help prevent ear infections. Daily brushing, plus cleanings at the vet as needed, is good dental care for dogs and can help prevent painful dental diseases later in life. Although the parents of this breed have a lot of energy, a Mini Goldendoodle tends to sit in a more moderate activity range. Daily walks plus some playtime and time to run are usually enough for them. But, they are also likely to match their energy level to yours, so be prepared for some bursts of energy as well as plenty of cuddling on the couch. Replacement costs of these types of goodies will range based on how quickly your Bulldog destroys their current supply. You can also order subscription packs from many reputable companies that give your dog new exploratory items every month. Since these dogs are at risk for many health complications, save as much as you can—erring on the side of caution. The best time for obedience lessons is between 6 months to a year, but every trainer varies in preference. Depending on the treatment, you could spend thousands of dollars in one swoop. Pet sitting is more personalized care but can rack up extra fees. If you want to save as much as possible while still giving your Bulldog the care they need, look at these money-saving tips. They mainly offer spay and neuter surgeries at reduced costs, but they can also provide basic care. You can make anything from dog toys to intricate beds. Many things you can make may not even require going to the store for materials—you can simply make them from existing items at home. Auto-Ship Dog Food If you buy your dog food from certain websites, many companies offer discounted prices if you place an automatic, recurring order. Of course, you can always save on English Bulldog costs by using low-cost services and making tons of at-home projects and toys for your pooch. However, that price can increase significantly, even into five figures, depending on the location and reputation of the breeder. Reproducing requires artificial insemination. These factors increase the investment for French bulldog breeders. The more investment a breeder makes into producing healthy high-quality dogs in good environments, the higher the price will be. The rarer the color is, such as blue, lilac or chocolate, the more you can expect to pay. Certain coat patterns, such as pied, merle or brindle, will also be more expensive. Female French bulldogs and those with blue eyes are pricier as well. Adopting through the French Bulldog Rescue Network is a more affordable way to acquire a new puppy or adult Frenchie. The French bulldog breed is exceptional with many rare characteristics that make them popular among dog owners. But there are also some challenges and things to watch out for. French Bulldog Size Fully grown French bulldogs average 12 inches tall. Adult females often weigh between 16 and 24 pounds, and males reach 20 to 24 pounds. Most French bulldogs will continue to gain weight until about 14 months old but stop gaining height between nine and 12 months. There are also mini Frenchies, also known as teacup French bulldogs. These are bred to be miniature versions of standard French bulldogs, weighing between five and 14 pounds. They typically shed in spring and fall, so you should increase coat brushing during that time to help reduce hair in your home. This can help you save on grooming costs. French Bulldog Appearance Along with breeds like English Bulldogs and pugs, French bulldogs are a brachycephalic breed, which means they have a shortened snout. Their faces are wrinkly and scrunched, giving them a distinct look, even as puppies. French Bulldog Colors French bulldogs come in many different coat colors. These include neutral colors — such as cream, gray, tan and black — as well as more rare colors like lilac, blue and chocolate. The rarer the color, the more expensive the price of a French bulldog will be. French Bulldog Temperament These pups are affectionate and playful, making them great companions. Training is recommended for French bulldogs since they can march to the beat of their own drum without guidance. Most Frenchies respond well to training, especially when treats are involved. Trainers believe French bulldogs understand commands but are moody and will respond as they feel like it. Frenchies are great family dogs, do well around other pets and prefer companionship. A companion will also allow you to leave them alone for longer periods of time without them getting frustrated. But, of course, another pet will come with its own costs. French Bulldog Activity Level Frenchies are not the best dog if you want a jogging companion. French Bulldog Life Expectancy French bulldogs have an average lifespan of 12 years if well taken care of. If they remain in great health, they can live as long as 15 years. Your veterinarian will periodically examine your Frenchie to ensure he or she is growing properly. Due to their flat faces and short necks, it can be difficult for French bulldogs to use standard feeding bowls. You can instead provide elevated dog food and water bowls to help your pet eat and drink more comfortably. Buying treats, toys or a comfortable dog bed can also help your Frenchie feel welcome in its new home. Alternatives to Buying From a Breeder As an alternative to buying a purebred dog from a breeder, consider adopting a purebred rescue or shelter dog. Locations, availability and adoption fees vary, but procuring your purebred dog through the rescue network can be a lower-cost and more satisfying alternative to buying from a breeder. As you plan your budget, keep in mind adoptable rescue and shelter pets have most likely already been spayed or neutered, fitted with a microchip, vaccinated, dewormed, started on parasite prevention and treated for at least the most urgent health and behavior problems presented when they arrived at the rescue organization or shelter. These initial expenses are usually covered by the adoption fee. When you choose a purebred dog, you have a good idea of its size at adulthood. As a general rule, the larger the dog, the greater the expense for feeding, equipping, grooming, boarding, insuring and providing veterinary care. Because they are more likely to be inbred from relatively small populations, some purebred and crossbred dog breeds may be at greater risk than mixed-breed dogs for developing particular heritable health conditions. These conditions, which can be debilitating for the dog, heartbreaking for you and costly to treat, are generally well-documented for the various breeds and should be a central focus of your breed research. For example, as a group, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are known to be more prone than average to develop heart disease. German Shepherds have more than their share of canine degenerative myelopathy. Dachshunds have relatively more spinal issues. Boxers have an above-average incidence of cancer. While the most reputable breeders select to improve health by screening breeding stock and attempting to eliminate defective genes, some breeders either carelessly or unknowingly disregard such considerations, and some may even select problematic traits on purpose. German Shepherds selected for their sloping backs tend to have more hip dysplasia. Shar-Peis selectively bred for their skin folds often suffer from chronic skin infections. Such breed-specific health risks can result in higher veterinary care costs. Health Insurance Claims by Breed One indicator of the cost of care for dogs of various breeds is claims paid by pet health insurers. Another list based on insurance claims data was published by Forbes Advisor as part of a more comprehensive article on pet health insurance. They were initially looking for a schnauzer, but then his daughter discovered an exotic, mystical creature online: a French bulldog with hair that was long and fluffy and coloring that was a mottled pattern, known as merle, in soft pink-tan and blue-gray shades. Roman Wexler purchased Nora, a fluffy merle-colored French bulldog, after his daughter spotted the puppy online. In , they were the second most popular dog breed in the United States — knocking German shepherds down a notch — and the top dog in New York City, according to the American Kennel Club. The breed standard is a short coat in brindle a streaky brown that can appear black , cream, white or fawn, with the possibility of white marking. Menczel estimated that demand has increased tenfold in the past few years. But some say the new iteration could be bad for the breed. Bulldogs are already notorious for a range of health issues , including breathing complications and hip problems. Trying to produce dogs with a unique coat texture linked to a rare recessive gene could encourage irresponsible breeding and exacerbate health issues. Instead of just finding these dogs, unscrupulous breeders [could] start mixing them and making fake fluffies by crossing a Frenchie with a Pekingese. Soon, a Kardashian will be walking around with one. They named her Nora, and she has become a valuable, playful member of the family.

The average price will also depend on the conditions in which the puppies are being raised — a reputable breeder will only sell his or her puppies in a clean and healthy environment. It should be noted that it is not ALWAYS more expensive to purchase a puppy from one of these areas — especially if you locate an excellent breeder. Some breeders may charge more because of the high demand for German Shepherds in these areas. Virginia has many cities that fall into the cheapest category for purchasing a German shepherd puppy. Generally, however, you will find that smaller towns charge less than larger metropolitan areas. You can find German Shepherds in most parts of Virginia — so keep looking. If you go see the puppies and they appear unkempt or ill-treated, this should also be a cause for concern. Your breeder should provide you with a clean and healthy environment for your new puppy. When you find a breeder that you feel comfortable with, be sure to ask lots of questions. Breeders are usually more than happy to share their wealth of knowledge about the breed. There are a few key questions you should ask your breeder before purchasing a German Shepherd puppy from them. Some questions you may want to ask include: Are the puppies kept in a clean environment? What kind of food are they eating? How far along in age are the puppies when they leave for their new homes? Do they offer any kind of medical care or guarantee? These questions should give you an idea about how much effort and care goes into raising German Shepherd puppies. A good breeder will have no problem giving you the contact information of happy customers who have purchased puppies from them in the past. When speaking to references, be sure to ask about the quality of the puppy, how well the transition went and if there were any problems after taking the puppy home. References can be a great way to get an idea about whether or not a breeder is reputable. They should be on site when you visit your potential puppy. Make sure that both parents are healthy, friendly and well-tempered. Healthy German Shepherds typically live between years; so be sure to inquire about their health history. An honest breeder will tell you about any potential health problems that may arise due to genetics or environment. German Shepherds are known for their intelligence, strength and obedience. They are often used as working dogs in law enforcement, search and rescue, therapy and other service-related roles. German Shepherds are known as a very loving and devoted breed. Not only do they bond strongly with their owners, but they also fully accept family members and children as part of their pack. They can be somewhat wary around strangers until they get to know them. They are relatively active dogs that need plenty of daily exercise and mental stimulation. You can also ask for letters of reference from veterinarians who have treated the puppies in the past. Meeting past customers will give you a good idea about the quality of the puppies the breeder is producing, and it will also help you to determine if the breeder has a good reputation. Remember, we are looking for breeders who offer healthy, well-socialized puppies at an affordable price. If you are getting a puppy from a breeder, it is important to ask if they have a good veterinarian they use. A good breeder will take their puppies to the vet for check-ups and will also have their vaccinations records up-to-date. If the breeder cannot provide you with the name of a good veterinarian, this might be cause for concern. It is also important to ask how often the breeder takes their puppies to the vet for check-ups. A reputable breeder will be more than happy to answer all of your questions. If you come across an ad for German Shepherd puppies that seems too good to be true, it probably is. Be on the lookout for the following signs of an unethical breeder: The puppies are being sold at a very low price The puppies are being sold online or through classified ads The puppies are very young and have not been fully vaccinated There is no contact information listed for the breeder The breeder does not have a good reputation If you see any of these signs, it is best to walk away and find a reputable breeder. You can also report them to the Better Business Bureau or your local animal control agency. German Shepherds are a breed that is known to be susceptible to a number of health problems, including hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, bloat and cancer. It is important to ask the breeder if your puppy has any health problems. A good breeder will be honest about any health concerns the puppy might have and will also provide you with a guarantee that the puppy is healthy. If the breeder does not offer a guarantee, this is another sign that you should walk away. A reputable breeder will always stand behind their puppies. Many new owners choose to buy a crate so that their puppy has a safe and secure place to sleep and relax, but others prefer to use baby gates or exercise pens instead. Before bringing your German Shepherd home be sure to puppy-proof your home. This means removing any items that the puppy might be tempted to chew on, like electrical cords or furniture legs. You will also want to make sure that there are no poisonous plants in your yard. It is also important to have a designated area for the puppy to potty. Puppies should be taken outside regularly to eliminate, and you will want to make sure that there is always a spot in your yard where they can go. If you have other pets in your home, it is important to socialize them with the new puppy as soon as possible. German Shepherds can be dominant dogs, so it is important to make sure that they know who is boss. Also, be sure to set a good example because they will look to you for guidance. Be prepared for a lot of love, kisses and muddy paws. Potty training a puppy can seem impossible at first, but with dedication, it is completely achievable. Before bringing your German Shepherd home, make sure that you have everything you need for potty training. This includes everything from food and water dishes to pee pads and poop bags. When you start this process, it is important to choose a designated area where the puppy will eliminate in your yard or in the house. Pee pads are also an option if your dog does not want to go outside in cold weather. You should always take your German Shepherd Puppy outside when they wake up, thirty minutes after eating or drinking anything, before bedtime and about minutes after playing. If the puppy eliminates in the designated spot, be sure to praise them and give them a treat. It is important to be patient and consistent when potty training a German Shepherd Puppy. With a little bit of time and effort, your puppy will be successfully potty trained in no time. I love animals and love helping people adopt a pet. It all started when attending Missouri State University and I began volunteering at an animal shelter. Before you purchase your dog from the breeder, you should consider getting some basic knowledge about owning German Shepherds. The Virginia German Shepherd rescue group can be reached by visiting their website at German Shepherd Rescue, or via email at IrianandaisVagina dot com. All puppies are screened for temperament and health problems before any decision is made on the dog to adopt. German Shepherd puppies for sale in Richmond, Virginia are all given a health guarantee before they are offered for adoption. Also, all puppies go through home inspections by a licensed veterinarian. If your puppy has health problems or behavioral problems, please contact the rescue group immediately so that the dog can be spayed or neutered and also receive psychological treatment if needed. There are many different places that German Shepherd puppies can be found for sale in Richmond, Virginia. Your first place is by looking in the classifieds of your local newspaper, as there will usually be many advertisements placed there. Other locations include pet stores, breeders, and rescue groups. Many of these places will have a list of dogs they have available, along with a brief description of each dog. Once you have an idea of the type of dog you want to adopt, visit each one to see if they have what you are looking for. The second place to look is online. Several web sites list puppies for sale in Richmond, Virginia, as well as other cities around the commonwealth. Some sites also allow you to search by Breed, Gender, Age, and other criteria. Often the best way to choose is to read the description of the dog carefully and to call the phone number provided for that purpose. You might also find descriptions and photos on the web site by clicking on the Dog Listings link at the top of the page. This will take you to a page with a large number of pictures and descriptions, so you will have a good idea of the dog you wish to adopt. Once you know the dog you wish to have, you need to decide whether to purchase from a breeder or a private seller. There are advantages and disadvantages to both methods. If you purchase from a private seller, it is important to remember that the puppies may not be properly socialized with other dogs, or have not had any previous training. Besides, there is always the possibility of disease or genetic problems. In most cases, however, when you purchase a puppy from a reputable breeder, you are buying a great dog and you have an opportunity to learn about his background. The Internet also offers a great opportunity to interact with others who are interested in German Shepherds. You can look at many different classes and view the pictures of dogs who are there, as well as hear from many people. You can also talk to the people who are selling their dogs and get their names and phone numbers. This gives you the best chance of contacting the right one and making an offer. Also, you should consider the cost. If money is not a factor, then German shepherd puppies for sale in Richmond, Virginia can be found for as little as twenty dollars. However, if you are looking for something nicer, you may need to spend a few hundred dollars. Of course, if you are prepared to pay a bit more, you can usually get an older dog that is also a show quality dog. First, you should make sure that the dog is healthy and that it has no health problems that are not known yet. You should also consider any behavioral problems that the dog might have and make sure they are not extreme or bad. You can check with the American Kennel Club to see if there are known problems with your dog and if the problems are serious. This will help you avoid buying a dog that may have a future problem. Finally, you should ask the breeder plenty of questions about the dog and the breeding procedures. You should be sure that you know what to expect and that you can provide adequate proof that you can take care of the dog properly. It is also a good idea to find out if the breeder has socialized the puppy with other dogs in the area. Ask the breeder how many times the dog has been exposed to different people and other dogs before you buy the puppies and make sure that you have the time and money to maintain the dog over the next few years. Moderate Grooming Moderate Grooming Although enthusiasts would advise any interested dog owners to ask which line their Lab mix puppies come from, it's still important to note that there is only one Labrador breed. Whichever your Lab mix is from, I'm sure it'd still be the best boy or girl you can ever care for. Labrador Mixes Size Because Labradors are considered medium to large dogs, so they definitely affect their hybrid size. For example, small breeds mixed with Labradors may stand and weigh more than the other purebred parent. Mixed with larger breeds, then they may stand and weigh less than the larger parent. It all boils down to your preference and lifestyle as the owner. Labrador Mixes Life Span Numerous studies have found that mixed-breed dogs may live just a little bit longer than purebreds. The same goes with Labrador mixes as they are expected to live for 12 to 14 years, slightly longer than a purebred Labrador of 10 to 12 years. But as long as they are happy and healthy, Lab mixes can surely accompany you for a much longer time than that! Labrador Mixes Health Generally, Labradors are quite a healthy breed. The same goes with Lab mixes, although they can still be prone to diseases inherent to their parents' breed even though they are expected to be genetically better. Some health concerns that Lab mix owners need to watch out for are different eye diseases, Elbow and Hip Dysplasia , Arthritis, Obesity, etc. Labrador Mixes Temperament Knowing the temperament of a purebred pup is easy, but not for mixed breeds. As they are born from two different breeds with different personalities and temperaments, your guess is only as good as mine on how a Labrador hybrid will turn out. If possible, meet both parents to know what personality your dog may pick up. Or you can also observe their behavior and temperament in the kennel, especially if they are at least 6 months of age or older. Labrador Mixes Energy Level Because Labradors are energetic, their mixes can also be quite energetic too, especially if combined with an equally active breed. As a rule of thumb, a Labrador mix needs at least 1 hour of physical activity a day or else, they'd redirect their energy to chewing off things, and you don't want that! And depending on how active they are, they can do zoomies way longer than that! Apart from running or playing fetch, Labradors are also known swimmers—maybe that's something your Lab mix would also want to try! The over-the-top cuteness of a Labradoodle won the hearts of millions of dog owners worldwide with their cute smile, teeny ears for a big body, and fluffy fur. They are low-shedders and a perfect family dog, especially for children! Unlike the Labradoodle, Goldador can be heavy shedders. Their double coats need brushing every other day. Also, they require plenty of physical exercise so having a spacious house or yard is better to accommodate a Goldador's energy. Although they have short coats, they can still shed quite often, so regular brushing and grooming are also necessary. This hybrid is very much protective, loyal , and affectionate to its family members. Apart from being playful, they mostly retain their Border Collie parent's herding instinct, so there may be some nipping-at-the-heel action going, especially if they're not trained. There's no other way to describe a Labrbull's appearance but that. Since Pitbulls have such a bad rep just a misunderstanding, if you ask me! They may look fierce, but Labrabulls are sweet and easy to care for! Great Danes are gentle giants, and so do Labradanes. They are great for families with kids and don't need as much exercise as other Labrador mixes. First-time owners would surely do well in caring for a Labradane. It's quite difficult to guess the temperament of an Aussiedor because its parents' personalities are polar opposites. While Labradors tend to be friendly and outgoing, Australian Shepherds are more of I-don't-need-friends-I'm-shy-but-I-got-you types of dogs. Aussiedors can also inherit their other parent's herding instinct, which may be a problem for your small kids if you have one! Beagadors can go along with other pets. However, training may be quite difficult, especially if they mostly take after their Beagle parent. But because both its parents are intelligent, Labraheelers can do well in agility and obedience training. Houses with yards are preferred, but apartment living is fine too, just as long as they get their daily hour walk. There's no mistaking the parentage of this mixed-breed dog with its startling blue eyes and regal demeanor. Huskadors are intelligent and intuitive. They can easily pick up new commands and tricks as they are being taught. However, they got the extra shedding coat of their Husky parent, so extra brushing is also needed. Plus, they can also be the clingy type, so don't leave them too long on their own. Labmaraners do well in outdoor activities, which means couch potato owners may have to exert more effort in keeping them happy. They can also weigh up to 90 lbs, so beware of small kids and little pets! Labmaraners are generally friendly, but they may get too friendly without giving a mind to how big they actually are! One thing's sure, though—they are working dogs through and through, so lots of physical activities are necessary. You can also expect a year-round moderate shedding thanks to their thick, double coats of fur. Dachsadors are quite lively and motivated, and thanks to their size, they'd be contented playing zoomies even in an apartment setting. They'd also happily cuddle with you on the couch as they don't require much physical activity, unlike the others. Spanadors can weigh up to 50 lbs and can do well in different canine agility sports. But if you only want to relax on the couch, they can be the perfect companion for that too! Apart from being sociable, Dalmadors are great guard dogs thanks to the protective genes of a Dalmatian. However, because they're intelligent, you may need to try different approaches in training them, or else they'll get easily bored! Because of this, their energies if not used wisely may mostly be spent chasing after smaller animals. On the other hand, Springadors will do their best to please their owners, so you'll definitely get an attentive and faithful companion out of them. Mixed with an equally active Labrador, we get a tiny furball of pure energy from Labrahuahuas. But don't worry, whatever aggressive behavior their Chihuahua parents typically have wasn't picked up by the Labrahuahua. They love being the center of everybody's attention and would happily entertain everyone they know well. Just be mindful of those skin folds—they need constant cleaning, too to prevent any complications from developing! Chabradors are extremely loyal dogs that tend to bond well with one human. They don't need much exercise, but they do need a lot of grooming and brushing because of those thick, double coats that shed quite often. And depending on how large the Labrador parent is, they can actually weigh up to a whopping lbs! Another thing they commonly inherit from the other parent is a gentle and mellow personality. However, expect to clean your house more frequently because Labernards can also be quite the shedder! A full-grown Doberdor can weigh up to lbs and will definitely need a lot of active time to be fit and healthy. They are also quite a friendly mixed breed when socialized properly, and their alertness makes them excellent watchdogs too. Well, just imagine a Pug's face in a Lab's body! This mix can grow up to 50 lbs and can be quite the shedder too. Pugadors are also good as playmates and companions for kids! No wonder Labrakitas got this personality, too, although on a calmer level because of the Labrador genes. There are excellent watchdogs and companion dogs, too, when trained if you manage to get over their natural stubbornness. Labrakitas are well-suited for families with no children. They can be your hunting companion, your family companion, or simply just your companion on the couch. They can even adapt to apartment living just give them an hour a day of outdoor exercise, and they'll be good! Vizsladors can be quite independent, too, though, so patience is key in training them! They're not much of a shedder, but they sure are slobberers! Otherwise, they can be quite destructive and nobody wants that! Rottadors shed moderately, can stand up to 27 inches tall at the shoulder, and can weigh up to lbs. Because if the Labrador Retriever is the most popular dog in the country, the French Bulldog comes second for , at least. They're also one of the friendliest breeds you'll meet in the bunch! They can be playful, too but not expend as much energy as a purebred Labrador. If you're not on an adventure, though, try to keep them busy still. Otherwise, they'll look for something to get busy with themselves, and you may not like it! Combining them with a Labrador, an equally athletic breed, brings about a mixed breed that naturally needs lots of active time. Greyadors also need structured training and physical activities. Be wary because, at times, they can get pretty stubborn too! Their sizes also make them a little clumsy, so apartment living is definitely not the best idea for a Labrador Corso. Depending on which parent they take the most after, their ears can either be floppy or erect. Weekly brushing is often necessary for their thick and dense coats, and just like their Labrador parent, they don't mind taking a few splashes in the pool every once in a while! They range from medium to large size with short, straight, dense fur that can be red, black, brown, or sable in color. And just like their parent Basenji, Labrasenjis don't bark—they yodel! If you haven't heard how Basenjis yodel, check out this video! Their sizes range from medium to large dogs, and they don't require much grooming. Rhodesian Labs are also energetic , but one thing about them is they tend to eat more than what they really require, so you may want to be strict about that portion control! They also love to swim. Good thing they have water and weather-resistant coats! But running around may be the easiest activity to keep them fit, so urban or rural living is your best bet to keep your German Wirehaired Lab happy. They do well in a hot or cold climate, thanks to their thick coat. The catch is they do shed a lot, so frequent brushing is required. Bassadors love the attention , though, especially from their favorite human, so they don't mind getting brushed on a regular basis. This means they are not just casual pets—they require tasks and work to be done. They also do well in sporting activities, so make sure to engage them in one to maximize their fullest potential. The American Bullador is a stocky mix breed of yet another two purebreds loved by the American population. Like any other Lab mix, they require at least a weekly brushing as their short but dense hair can still be prone to matting. Their nails are also hard and tend to grow fast, so trimming them every 2 to 3 weeks might be necessary. American Bulladors also tend to be stubborn; you gotta have a lot of patience and positive reinforcements on hand to train them. Corgidors look just like a Labrador but with shorter legs which make them the cutest! Because of their size, they don't mind small living spaces, but they still do require regular exercise every day. They're also very patient with children and are quite the people-pleaser too! Just look at how fluffy those furs are! The Labernese is very much affectionate with their family, so much so that they can get anxious when left alone on their own. Joggers in the family can enjoy the company of a Labernese for their everyday run since this large mix breed also needs its daily exercise. Cavadors are naturally intelligent and affectionate, thanks to the similar personalities of both parents. Plus, they also do extremely well with kids! Just watch out for what and how much they eat because they are also prone to gaining too much weight! Plus, their high activity requirements can keep them warm even during the chilly season! Alaskan Maladors are intelligent and easy to train, yet they may not be the best option for first-time dog owners. They also have a high prey drive and tend to bark or howl a lot. They sure need strenuous activities to keep them entertained, and they can also excel in agility competitions if trained. Physically active owners will find the best companion ever with Chesadors. But surprisingly, they are not quite as active as their dog parents. They still need to be kept entertained. Otherwise, they'll probably dig holes around the yard. Lab'Aires are the offspring of two heavy-built, medium-sized dogs, so the same can be expected of their size and stance. They are seasonal shedders, so moderate grooming is only needed for this mixed breed. They can be average barkers, only to alert you when there's a stranger or danger in place. However, they also tend to shed a lot, and they can be notoriously chewers, too, especially when bored. The thing is, New Labralounds are high maintenance, grooming-wise. They will need five to six times brushing per week, and a pin brush and de-shedder will be your best friends in doing this. They are also easy to care for and are low-maintenance, but socializing them at a young age is important. Because of their size, they surely need a large space to wander about. They can weigh up to 80 lbs so a large living space is ideal, especially since they love running and playing around. Labrasetters also love the company of children, other pets, and their family! Because both parent breeds are intelligent, Kelpadors are also clever and eager to please. However, depending on who they take on after the most, they can be either friendly or reserved. Nonetheless, if you ever come across this unique mix, don't pass on the chance! They are also perfect for new dog owners, so there is nothing to worry about. So it's no surprise that some breeders thought of mixing these two together. And what a winning combination Labratzus are! Combine a Shih Tzu's spunky attitude and a Lab's easy-going personality, and you'll get the perfect companion dog for your family, especially kids! Another perfect companion dog for families who love to snuggle. Just don't expect them to be watchdogs, though. They are too friendly that all they might do only is befriend strangers! They are also energetic and quite affectionate with their families. Appearance-wise, they can stand up to 27 inches tall and weigh 75 lbs when fully grown. And while they do well in families with kids, it's best if the kids are a bit older and know how to interact with a dog properly. Some of the adjectives to describe them are brave, strong-willed, and devoted. They are also intelligent with excellent judgment, that's why they also make the best family guard dogs. Because of this, Schnauzadors can also come in varying sizes depending on their dog's parent. Although they are friendly, Schnauzadors can also get too bossy at times. They'd always try to show other dogs especially same-sex who's the boss! However, they still make for great family dogs, especially for children and older people. Never mind the sit, stay, roll over command. They just gotta watch that stranger passing by the window! It's hard to guess what temperament their mix will turn out; it depends on which parent they will take after the most. One thing's sure, though, they are loyal through and through and will love their humans for as long as they can. These Labrador mixes, however, need an experienced dog owner who can confidently show them who's the alpha. Otherwise, they'd decide for it themselves, and you may have a hard-time training and disciplining them! They're family-oriented dogs who love playtime! However, early socialization is still important, even how friendly this breed is, so make sure to introduce them to new people and animals. It's not advisable to leave them on their own as they can get too anxious alone. They are generally healthy Labrador mixes too, but also with the potential for weight gain, so watch out for what and how much they eat! Although they are a fairly active breed, they can do well in smaller living spaces and only require 30 to 45 minutes of daily exercise. Personality-wise, they tend to take after their Plott Hound parents, so they may be a little reserved around strangers compared to their Labrador parents. German Shorthaired Labs only require moderate grooming, and they are actually quiet and just observant most of the time. Don't get intimidated by their size and appearance; they'd still be a perfect fit for first-time owners—just as long as that owner loves physical activities as much as this mixed breed. Depending on the other purebred they are combined with, a Labrador mix can be slightly larger or smaller than Labs themselves. However, on average, a Lab Mix can grow from 20 to 24 inches tall at the shoulder and weigh 45 to 90 lbs. How can I tell if my dog is a Lab Mix? The best way to know whether your dog is a Labrador mix or not is thru DNA tests. There are available DNA test kits that you can purchase online that will not only determine your dog's ancestry but also their traits and possible health complications so I'd say it's worth giving a try! Do Lab Mix dogs shed? Labradors are heavy-shedders, so yes, Labrador mixes can be shedders too. However, some breeds like Poodles can somehow tone the shedding down when mixed with Labradors. Labradoodles, for example, are said to be non-shedders and a perfect match for dog owners with allergies. Boxador Boxer and Labrador mix Image By: Luke Sadler, Shutterstock Boxers are known for their bouncy, spunky, highly-energetic nature, which definitely tends to show through with the Boxador. Labs can also be a high-energy breed at times, so when mixed with a Boxer, expect your Boxador puppy to be rambunctious, ready to go, and a complete goof! The Boxador can be a pretty large dog, often reaching weights of 80 pounds while standing about 18 inches tall. All that size can make a Boxador quite the bull in a china shop when their excitement grows! But it also makes them adorable, and their loving temperament endears them to every member of the family. Like the Labrador, the Golden Retriever was bred as a hunting dog, so they both have plenty of intelligence and the desire to please their owners. Likewise, they make excellent family dogs. Golden Labradors have a friendly disposition similar to both parent breeds. After all, the Boston Terrier is just a fraction of the size of a Labrador Retriever! But surprisingly, the Boston Lab is a great pup with a friendly and loving personality that makes it perfectly suited for families. These dogs love to please their owners and will go out of their way to do so. They are also highly intelligent and much calmer than most pure Labs thanks to the more easy-going demeanor of the Boston Terrier. But look out, because the Boston Lab does sometimes show their stubborn side! When combined to make a Labsky, also called a Huskador , you can usually expect the offspring to display a similar personality. Huskies can also be a bit stubborn at times, but Labs are known for their obedience and intelligence, which can temper the stubbornness in the Labsky. Labskies can be about 24 inches tall and weigh around 80 pounds. They often inherit the long, thick coat of the Siberian Husky. This means year-round shedding and lots of maintenance. When mixed with a Lab, the resulting offspring is just as high energy and can still have plenty of herding instinct left over. Both parent breeds of the Labraheeler are highly intelligent working dog breeds. Because of this, the Labraheeler is great at training and can easily learn to perform tasks or follow obedience commands. This is a rare breed, but despite their rarity, they make excellent pets because of their loving demeanor and undying loyalty to their family. This breed sheds non-stop, so expect lots of loose hair and plenty of grooming time. But thanks to their high levels of intelligence, they can be trained well and will easily learn obedience commands. But the result is surprisingly cute; a small to mid-sized dog that looks like a small lab with short legs and big, floppy ears. What they do have are some known medical concerns. They also have interesting body proportions that can actually result in mobility issues because of how short their legs are compared to their body length. Once mixed, any of these issues might show up in the offspring. The Dachsador is starting to gain popularity. They were originally bred to reduce the health issues that both Labs and Dachshunds commonly display. Labradors are more playful and upbeat and quite a bit larger. The French Labrador is about as friendly of a dog as you could meet. This is especially true because of how closely they bond with their owners who they desperately want to please. It was originally bred to maintain the best traits of the Lab while reducing the numerous health concerns that plagued the breed. The Corgidor that results when you mix these two breeds will have the stubby legs that distinguish the Corgi, but with the face and colors of the Labrador. Hailing from two well-respected working dog breeds, your Alaskan Malador will need a job to keep it happy. They often have the colorations and markings of a Rottweiler and can grow to the same size, up to 27 inches tall. This mix makes for a very large dog that can be somewhat unpredictable in temperament. Make sure to properly train and socialize your Labrottie. But Rottweilers have shorter life expectancies than Labs, so your Labrottie might not live as long as a purebred Labrador Retriever. Labs are much more active and energetic, though. When bred together, the resulting Labernard could go either way. Because both parent breeds were bred as working dogs, Boradors have the innate intelligence necessary for training. They can learn easily, but they can also have very high levels of energy from the Border Collie side of the family, so a firm hand and plenty of patience are necessary to train a Borador. Because the Border Collie has much longer hair than a Labrador, the Borador is going to require some extensive grooming. They also have a natural herding instinct that tends to display itself around small children, so this breed is best for individuals or families with older kids. Great Danes are known to be very gentle, calm, and affectionate. They make great family pets and even do great as service dogs. Despite their large stature, Labradanes only need a moderate amount of exercise. German Shepradors make excellent guard dogs. They have plenty of energy, but they also know when to be calm. They have lots of energy and need tons of exercise. But when you mix them with Labs, the resulting offspring can look very similar to a Dalmatian, or just barely show their Dalmatian lineage. The signature spots that the Dalmatian is known for might cover the entire coat of the Dalmador. But the Labrahuahua actually seems to work quite well! They can vary in size drastically and take their visual cues from either side of the family. But they can also be playful and happy dogs from the Labrador side. But this makes them a danger to children, especially considering their high prey drive. This breed is highly intelligent but can still be difficult to train because of their stubbornness. Once trained, they can make excellent companions, but socialization will be very important with Labrakitas. But Beagles are much smaller with fewer space demands. It gets its massive size from the Bull Mastiff side of the family and can sometimes be as heavy as pounds. You might expect such a massive dog to need loads of exercise, but the Bullmasador is a bit of a paradox since it really just needs one walk each day. This is a very loyal breed that makes an excellent companion. They are very intelligent, which makes them easy to train. Both of these breeds were originally used as hunting dogs, so the Spanador offspring they create are good-natured and very intelligent. They are excellent with children and make great family pets due to their calm, gentle personalities. Still, the Labrasenji is a dog that will need a lot of exercise each day and just as much patience to properly train them. Cavador Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and Labrador mix A post shared by Paul Martin Jones jaypjay44 Cavadors are incredibly friendly dogs, which makes sense since both parents are known for their friendly disposition. These dogs are often described as charismatic. Look out for problems like mitral valve disease and syringomyelia. They have a short lifespan of around eight years, which is common with such large breeds. When mixed with a Labrador, the lifespan will likely even out between the breeds, so you can hope for a ten-year lifespan in a Labernese. Labs tend to be friendly and trusting, but the Bernese Mountain Dog is the opposite. Socialization is extremely important with the Bernese Mountain Dog, and it will be just as important with the Labernese. They can make great companions, but make sure to socialize early on to avoid the distrusting behavior that can develop in the Bernese Mountain Dog. They have lots of affection to give and want to receive the same from their person. Labradoodles often inherit the curly mop of hair from their Poodle parent. Expect to spend plenty of time grooming to keep all that hair in good condition! Early signs typically include noisy panting , a raspy bark and tiring easily with exercise, but later signs can include vomiting and muscle weakness. The Basics of the Labrador Retriever Before we introduce you to some of the cutest Lab mixes around, it is important that we talk about a few of the basics of Labradors. This will help you decide whether a Lab mix may be a good fit for your family! Labradors usually weigh between 60 and 80 pounds and stand about 22 to 24 inches at the shoulder. Labs have moderately long lifespans of about 12 years, though some reach even older ages. Labs are members of the sporting group, who were originally bred to help fisherman tend nets, until their owners started using them to retrieve downed birds. Labrador retrievers have a friendly, happy-go-lucky demeanor, and they usually get along with most two- and four-footers they encounter. Labs are full of energy and often make superb running or hiking companions. Labrador retrievers can make great pets for first-time dog owners, so long as you provide plenty of exercise and stimulation each day. Labs are people-oriented dogs, who thrive best in homes that are rarely empty. Labrador retrievers are generally intelligent and eager to please, making training a breeze. Labs tend to shed pretty heavily, thanks to their thick double coats. Labrador retrievers do often suffer from a few common health problems, including patellar luxation, hip dysplasia, and osteochondritis dissecans. No dog breed is perfect for all situations or scenarios, but as you can see, Labs are certainly one of the most appealing breeds in the world and they have quite a bit to offer the right family! Without further ado, here are some Labrador designer breeds that are sure to steal your heart. In some cases, like the Labradoodle a cross between a Labrador retriever and a poodle , the names are pretty popular and used widely. Australian Shepherd Lab mixes also produces some puppers with pretty adorable coat color patterns , which just adds to their appeal. These pups are best paired with active owners. But while they may have blockier builds than typical Labs, most of these guys and gals are big softies, who love nothing more than cuddling with their humans. Like Labs, American bulldogs excel at a wide variety of tasks, making them great all-around dogs for families, farmers, hunters, and more! Labs are lovable goofballs who are all about fun and games, while Akitas are no-nonsense pooches, who project an air of competence and quiet dignity. One pooch in the litter may take after the Lab parent, while another may more closely resemble the Akita. Name aside, these playful pups have energy levels that are off-the-charts, so be sure you have a big yard and plenty of time to visit the park before adding one of these dogs to your family. Well, the Beagador may be just the thing! But, they can be a bit aloof around strangers. But when you cross a bullmastiff with a Lab — a dog who views all strangers as potential pals — all bets are off! These mixes can be a bit of a house-keeping headache, as Labs shed pretty heavily, while bullmastiffs are Olympic-caliber droolers. Labs have held the 1 spot since , but the cocker spaniel has sat atop the popularity pyramid in 23 different years since the s. Note that there are two different corgi breeds the Cardigan Welsh corgi and the Pembroke Welsh corgi , and each will produce a slightly different version of this mixed breed. Either are considered Lab Corgi dogs. Doberdor Labrador Retriever X Doberman Pinscher A post shared by Charli the doberdor charlithedoberdor Given that Dobermans and Labs are both very affectionate dogs who bond strongly with their owners, Doberdor mixed breed pups will make great companions for individuals and families alike. The Doberdor loves his human family and will make it known with endless puppy kisses and loyalty. Wanna see more Doberman mixes? Check out 15 of our favorites here! You may just want to consider the Dalmador. Labs make pretty good jogging partners themselves, and Dalmatians can run for days. Honestly, there are a variety of Dalmatian mixes available for fans of polka-dotted pooches. Dachsador Labrador Retriever X Dachshund. Typical Lab mix traits The best Lab mix breeds are of course a matter of opinion. As with any purebred dog, it depends entirely upon why you want a canine companion. If you want a small Lab mix as a family companion then getting one who is crossed with a smaller, calmer breed is a good choice. But if you want a dog for sports or hunting then going with a Labrador crossed with another working breed is a sensible move. If you want a dog to have a go at agility, then a Collie cross is a great place to start. Lab mix dogs are often found in shelters or Lab rescue centers. What is My Lab Mixed With? Labrador mix bred dogs can often look very different to either of their parents. And in some cases, if the parentage is unknown it is entirely possible that they have more than one breed in their genetic makeup. If you are rescuing an older dog, the only way to know with reasonable certainty where your mixed breed dog came from, is to order a DNA test. This will give you as many as three or four generations back, and give you a great idea what breeds went into your wonderful dog. They are fairly rare, as Afghan hounds are not terribly numerous. Your Afador puppy is likely to grow to be fairly large, as both Afghan Hounds and Labradors are reasonably tall. You could therefore end up with a dog with medium to long fur, which will require regularly grooming. Afghan temperaments tend to be more aloof than that of Labs, with less boisterous enthusiasm for everyone they meet. Basset Hound Lab mix Another rare cross but one which has great appeal to some people, is the Bassador. They are on average around 14 inches tall as adults, with body proportions suiting a larger breed of dog and shortened legs. Working line Basset Hounds tend to be in far better shape than their show bred cousins, and this is where you should start your search if you have your heart set on a Bassador. Border Collie Lab Mix Border Collies are incredibly intelligent dogs, who work very well with their owner if properly trained. Loyal to their families, and fairly indifferent to everyone else. They are quick to learn and can be taught a mind boggling range of activities through positive reinforcement training. The show dogs tend to be the least driven, although still high energy dogs that require a lot of stimulation. Like Labs as puppies they can be very nippy. This can express quite strongly around children, as they attempt to herd them around. They are not generally therefore recommended to families with very young kids. They do however often make excellent pets when older for active, busy families who enjoy training and working together. Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are without a doubt some of the friendliest little dogs in the world. They are charismatic, fun and loyal. They also have a fairly good average lifespan of 11 years. However, there are a couple of big, scary health problems associated with large numbers of this breed, so be very careful and do a lot of research if you are thinking of bringing one into your home. Health problems impacting a vast quantity of these little dogs include mitral valve disease , a heart problem which causes early death, and syringomyelia. This is a neurological problem caused by the size and shape of their skulls, not allowing their brain and brain stem to be properly accommodated. Two very popular breeds of gundog with a lot of similarities, this is one of the cross breeds where can be fairly confident of the type of Lab mix you will be getting when you bring home your puppy. Goldadors are very popular seeing eye dogs. They are well known for being intelligent, fast learners and very co-operative with their handlers. Like their Golden Retriever and Labrador parents, they tend to have very friendly temperaments and love spending time with their human family. Golden Retrievers are similarly sized dogs to Labradors, but with a far longer and wavier coat. Most Goldadors seem to have shorter fur more like the Lab parent, but this is not guaranteed. Bernese Mountain Dogs tend to be fairly calm and aloof as adults, and require a lot of dedication to socialisation when they are young due to potential nervousness around strangers and guarding tendencies. Due to their size, they are not really recommended for homes with young children or frail adults. Bernese Mountain Dogs are very large, growing up to 28 inches tall and weigh up to pounds. They also have a long coat, which requires a lot of grooming to keep in a good condition. Unfortunately like many extra large breeds, Bernese Mountain Dogs do not have very long life expectancies, averaging around 8 years long. When looking at longevity size is a big factor, and giant breed dogs regardless of whether they are mix bred or not will have shorter lifespans. You could therefore expect to see your puppy potential live fewer years than the average purebred Lab. They are utterly beautiful dogs, and if well managed can make wonderful companions. Labmaraner The Weimaraner is a beautiful dog, and an intelligent one too. Like all members of the gun dog group he has been bred with co-operative working in mind. Although he tends to be slightly less people focussed in general than your average Lab. This means that they are not as obsessed with greeting everyone when you take them for a walk. However, they can also be a little harder to engage in the training process and in some cases be even more driven than a Labrador. Like Labs, Weimaraners can also be prone to separation anxiety when left alone for long periods. Labradoodle Labradoodles are the most popular Labrador Retriever designer dog breed at the moment. A Labradoodle will not necessarily be a non-shedding dog, and may require some extreme grooming or very regular visits to the poodle parlour in order to not become matted. Pitbull Lab Mix The Pitbull Lab mix should be a great family dog, full of energy, with a short, easy care coat. Rottador or Labrottie Rottweilers crossed with Labradors are known as Labrotties. Or Rottadors. And they can be incredibly beautiful and dedicated companions to their families. Rottweilers can be up to around 27 inches tall, with big heads, deep chests and well muscled bodies. They are powerful dogs and need commitment to positive training from day one from their families in order to understand how to behave in their homes. Rottweiler temperament is also quite different to that of your average Labrador Retriever. There is no way of knowing which of his parents your Labrottie will take after. Rottweilers are a guarding breed. Extremely loyal to their family, but known to be wary of strangers and unpredictable around children if improperly socialised and managed. Your Labrottie puppy must be very well socialised, just as you would with a pure guarding breed dog. Make sure he has regular positive contact with people of every age, and is familiar with things like beards, hats and unusual items of clothing. Springador Springer Spaniels crossed with Labs are often referred to as Springadors. They can make fabulous pets or working dogs, but can have the extremes of both breeds. They are not for the inexperienced or inactive owner. Springers are very lively dogs with an incredibly high prey and hunting drive. They benefit from positive reinforcement training from an early age. In general Springers have great temperaments. However, there are some working lines which have nervous aggression problems and fixations on light chasing. Make sure that you meet the Springer parent to ensure that they are confident and not agitated. English Springer Spaniels tend to be smaller and lighter than Labs, with a longer coat. Springadors often have shorter coats, and can look a lot like a slightly shaggy black Lab with a few white markings. Lab Mix Temperament When you buy a mixed breed dog, their temperament will be a product of their varying lineage. They could end up with any mixture of the two lines temperaments, or something completely different. Make sure to meet both parents to ensure that they are confident, friendly characters. If both lines are happy, loving dogs then the chances are good that your puppy will be the same. Photo kindly provided by N Pappalardo. If your Labrador is a known cross, then you can make an educated guess that he could be anywhere between the average sizes for those breeds. However, it not always the case. And with a Labrador mixed with unknown other dogs, then they really could be any size at all. The Labrador element to their genetics does not limit their growth. Nor do they mean that they will definitely have any specific height to them. There will potentially be huge variation even within the litter. I grew up next door to a family who had two Labrador x Terriers from the same litter. One looked exactly like a Labrador in every way, except she had very short legs. The other was Labrador height but with a totally different shape. If size matters to you, then a purebred puppy or dog over 18 months old might be a better choice. Lab Mix Health Mix breed dogs can still be susceptible to the diseases carried by their parents. Especially if those diseases are common in both breeds. The Labrador parent should have a clear eye test of less than a year old. They should be PRA clear, and have a lower than average hip score. For full health testing for Labs check out this article. The other parent may also need a clear eye test, and a good hip score. The most important thing is to pick a puppy whose parents have both had all of the health tests relevant to their own breed. And whose personalities you would be happy to see replicated in your pup. Alternatively, look for a rescue dog that you have met and fallen in love with yourself. Should a Lab Mix take after their Labrador Retriever parent, they will be a playful, energetic, and affectionate dog that loves their families. Labrador Retrievers are energetic dogs that tend to have an extended puppyhood. They are also social, friendly, and tend to be patient and gentle with children. This makes them fantastic pets as they also tend to get along well with other dogs and even other pets, despite their retriever tendencies. If the other parent breed has a similar temperament, then you can expect the same from a Labrador Retriever Mix. You still want to ask questions about the other parent breed as they are bound to introduce some potential quirks of their own. Although Labs are happiest with room to run, they adapt well to apartments as long as they get enough exercise, mental stimulation, and affection. They also do well in most climates, but do not like to spend long stretches of time alone. If the other parent breed is also highly adaptable, then you can expect the same from a Labrador Retriever Mix. Are mixed-breed dogs healthier than purebred dogs? As with purebred dogs, health often depends on reputable breeding practices. Just as a mix can inherit none of the conditions common to their parent breeds, they could also inherit all of them or some combination of them. From the Labrador side, potential health concerns to be aware of in a Labrador Mix include patellar luxation , hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, and cataracts. The other parent breed will likely introduce some other potential conditions to this list. Reputable breeders screen their dogs to avoid passing preventable issues to puppies. You can also ask about any health tests or clearances that have been done. Labrador Retrievers are highly trainable dogs that can be a good fit for owners of any experience level. First-time owners may have a challenge at first with their high energy and exuberance, but tend to be successful. If the other parent breed is also highly trainable, then you can expect the same from a Labrador Retriever Mix. If the other parent breed tends to be more challenging to train, then you will want to be prepared for that potential and be ready to enroll in puppy training classes if you need them. A Lab Mix can end up with a coat similar to one of their parents or a coat that is truly a mix of both. Should they inherit the Labrador Retriever coat, it will be short and will shed throughout the year with heavier shedding as the seasons change. Weekly brushing and the occasional bath keep a Lab coat healthy. Trimming nails once or twice monthly keeps them from growing too long. Because dental care is often overlooked, gum disease is one of the most common health issues in dogs. Brushing teeth every day or using an enzyme toothpaste daily in addition to cleanings at the vet as needed helps prevent painful dental diseases later in life. Labrador Retrievers are high-energy working dogs that need plenty of exercise and a job to do to be happy. If the other parent breed is also a high-energy dog breed, then you should expect a Labrador Mix to be a high-energy dog as well. Even if the other parent breed sits in a lower activity range, you will still want to be prepared for the potential of a high-energy dog should they take after their Lab parent. Fully-grown Labrador Retrievers tend to stand inches tall and weigh pounds. The other parent can have a big effect on this, especially if they are the mother. Labs generally live for years. Although the other parent breed could affect this slightly, you should be able to expect a similar average life span from a Labrador Retriever Mix. Featured Labrador Mix Article.

They are cuddly and sweet pups who love running around, playing, making friends and are very enthusiastic learners. The breed is divided into 3 recognized categories: Toy Poodle; Mini; Standard. Although they differ in size, one thing is for sure: they are glamorous companion pets. They may have originated in Germany, but in France they were adored. Poodles are a highly intelligent breed in general. Toy Poodles, in particular, had an aptitude for learning tricks due to that intelligence. They wowed circus audiences across Europe with their stage performances and adorable charm. Toy Poodles are, first and foremost, performing pups. They love being the center of attention, but too much pampering can go to their heads. And with their intelligence, training is a breeze! They will often join in family activities and try to be a part of the action as much as possible. In fact, if left alone too long to their own devices these dogs may become destructive. This breed is highly adaptable. They tend to require mental stimulation and affection, so leaving brain teasers at home will work for some time. However, if the Toy Poodle Mix finds themselves alone and becomes bored, they may attack your shoes. The Toy Poodle Mix has moderately good health. However, they experience similar health concerns as other toy breeds with some additional Poodle-specific illnesses. For example, Toy Poodle Mixes may suffer from the following: hypothyroidism, teeth crowding, trachea collapse, kneecap migration, blood clotting disorders, skin inflammation, and hip dysplasia. As long as this pup regularly attends vet visits, exercises moderately, and maintains a healthy weight, they should enjoy a long, healthy life. Keep an eye out for certain things, like limping and weight loss, to be extra careful. Toy Poodles are companions through and through. So, a Toy Poodle Mix is likely to gleefully accompany owners on runs, errands, and even cuddles. In fact, these dogs love to sit on laps and are overjoyed at all the attention. These clever pups also pick up on commands very quickly and are eager to please. They make impressive little acrobats as long as a stern, consistent trainer is by their side. Their coats are curly and dense — requiring frequent grooming to prevent matting. Because of their crowding teeth, your Toy Poodle Mix may need a little extra brushing to keep their teeth healthy and strong. They can be just as active, but will tire out after a few laps around the living room. A Toy Poodle Mix is a good companion for people who tend to prefer lapdogs as opposed to running partners. A Toy Poodle Mix will only weigh about 7 pounds, on average, and stand under 10 inches tall. This dog breed lives between 12 and 15 years on average. Featured Toy Poodle Mix Article.

german shepherd puppy ears curling back - French Bulldogs are loving, loyal, and caring by nature which makes them ideal family pets or companion dogs for older owners. French Bulldogs come in a range of colors that include white, fawn, brindle as well as combinations of the above. They have flattened faces and a cute demeanor which partly accounts for their soaring popularity amongst pet owners. French bulldog tails are very short with a thick root and a thin tip that hangs quite low compared to other breeds. French Bulldog tails are stumpy and are either straight, screwed, or sometimes have curves in them. However, this is not the case because in reality they are born with their characteristically small tails! Hemivertebrae This is a condition that can actually occur in any breed but is more likely to inflict dogs with screwed tails, including French Bulldogs as well as Boston Terriers and Pugs. The clearest sign that your dog has hemivertebrae is that instead of a vertebra in their back looking like a spool it takes on a more triangular shape. This can be painful for your dog and may, in some cases, require surgery to relieve the compression in its back. In the first instance, if you suspect your French Bulldog has hemivertebrae, you should visit your vet who will probably prescribe anti-inflammatories and several weeks of rest. Only if this fails to work will surgery be considered. A tail pocket infection is when the wrinkle pocket near the tail gets infected, swollen, and red. This can cause their tail pocket to smell extremely bad and make the skin painful and irritated for your pet. All-Purpose Grooming Wipes. All French Bulldogs DO have a tail. They will universally be short and stumpy. The tail length varies depending on which of the two types of tail your Frenchie has. People wonder all the time whether French Bulldogs are born with tails that are then cut off docked for cosmetic reasons. Fortunately, the answer is no — Frenchie tails are not docked or cut off. Frenchies are simply born with a short stumpy tail. There are two shapes of French Bulldog tails commonly, screw-shaped bends not curls or straight. How the shape is referred to depends on the thick base with a fine taper. Straight Tail vs Screw Tail Frenchies. When the tails are so short — it can be tricky to know the difference. So Are French Bulldogs born with tails? Yes, all French Bulldogs are born with tails. Some of them have very small tails that make it appear as though they have been docked when in fact it is due to breeding. Decades of breeding have resulted in French Bulldogs having very short tails. There are two main shapes of French Bulldog tails. Straight, and screw. Both should have a thick root with a fine tip. All tail types are very short tails. A long time ago, French Bulldogs did have longer tails. However, due to breeding over the years, their tails have become much shorter. This is not a bad thing, as French Bulldogs still look just as adorable with their short tails! Oddly enough — it was not just aesthetic breeding that led to a stumpy tail. The tails were short when a version of the Frenchie was used as a fighting dog. Luckily, this practice has been outlawed in most of the world for decades. This Frenchie on a park bench has a super short tail. The tail may be straight or screwed but NOT curly. Therefore you would never expect a pure French Bulldog to have a curly tail like a Boston Terrier , or a Pug. The breed standard expects a tail that is long enough to cover their butt, but cannot raise above horizontal. Their tails will point to the ground. This is not true — French Bulldogs can and do Wag their tails! Their tails are just so short that sometimes they struggle to do it. So a wagging Frenchie might not look quite as obvious as other happy dogs. When my Labradoodle Max wags his tail — the whole world knows as the fluffy tail makes quite the scene. The super-short tails of Frenchies are less obvious when wagging. Instead, look for a wagging BUTT of the dog. Many Frenchies will wag their entire rear end when they are excited or happy. A straight tail Frenchie can usually wag better than a screw tail Frenchie. A tail pocket is the skin fold or wrinkles just beneath the tail. Not all Frenchies will have a tail pocket — but many will. Frenchies can develop a tail pocket even up to six-seven months of age. Why do tail pockets matter for Frenchies? A tail pocket is a skin fold that does not get cleaned often. This fold can attract bacteria. If not cleaned or looked after — this pocket can get infected. This can be either a stinky problem for the Frenchie owner, or an uncomfortable or even painful issue for the dog. As a Frenchie owner, you will need to embrace your role of checking and occasionally cleaning the tail pocket if your dog has one. You do not want a bacterial infection. If there is a pronounced tail pocket you need to clean it frequently with neutral wipes and dry it with a soft, clean cloth. What fun! Hemivertebrae deformity is a spine problem that comes from selective breeding for a shorter tail. It results in compression of some fairly important nerves and anatomy. It can be both disabling and painful. Learn more in this somewhat upsetting study As an owner of a French Bulldog, you need to factor in regular Vet checks to identify this kind of serious issue early. If present it will require monitoring and sometimes surgical intervention. If you suspect such a condition — you need Vet advice. Full stop. A Vet can diagnose using either physical examination or more likely X-ray or CT or even MRI The treatment ranges from monitoring to symptomatic anti-inflammatories, and even surgery. Call Vic Kasser or Email! The dog's tail ranges from several inches in length and there may be dogs who do not have tail. The French Bulldog tail should be either straight or kinked but not curly , short, hung V low, thick root and fine tip; carried low in repose. The screw-tail shape is due to abnormal shape of tail bones, but this abnormality can also affect other parts of the spine with serious consequences. An understanding of the importance of the tail and the conditions to which a lack of tail can predispose is gained by reviewing the anatomy and the physiology of the normal length tail and the pelvic region. The normal canine tail consists of approximately 20 highly mobile vertebrae largely enclosed by very versatile muscles making the various segments, especially the tip capable of finely graded movements. French Bulldogs have an average of 6 or les vertebraes often deformed in their tails which are incapable of fine movement. Locomotion The tail is important as a means of counter-balance when the dog is carrying out complicated movements such as leaping, walking along narrow structures, or climbing. Tail muscles are also important in stabilising the vertebral column and supporting the action of the extensor muscles of the back as well as those of the croup and buttocks. Defecation and pelvic diaphragm integrity During defecation the dog assumes a squatting position with elevation of the tail an subsequent relaxation of muscles. The movement of the tail during the act of defecation has a direct influence in evacuating the faecal bolus. If the tail is removed from an inmature puppy the muscles of the tail and pelvis may fail to develop to their full potential. Removal of the tail in the mature dog may lead to atrophy and degeneration of these muscles. An absence of adequate function of these muscles may result in rectal dilatation, rectal sacculation and faecal incontinence. Any process resulting in fascial weakening, muscle atrophy, or muscle degeneration may predispose to this wekness in the pelvic diaphragm. Burrows and Ellison recorded a predisposition to perineal hernia in those brachycephalic breeds, which have naturally docked tails. Communication and canine behaviour The position of the tail and the way it is moved can signal pleasure, fear, friendliness, dominance, playfulness, defensiveness. Thus a very short tail can affect the interaction of dog with other animals and man. Some behaviourists believe the absence of a tail may predispose a dog to show unwarranted aggression to other dogs and man, or that they may be the victim of attacks by other dogs due to their failure to communicate. The tail is not merely an inconsequential appendage. It is an anatomically and physiologically significant structure which has many biological functions that should not he underestimated. February 7, No comments There are many benefits of living with French Bulldogs — their portable size, their endearing expressions, and their quirky personalities have made them one of the most popular dog breeds in America. However, before you bring a Frenchie home, potential owners need to be aware of the problems with their tails and tail pockets. Does the French Bulldog Have a Tail? Yes, French Bulldogs sport tails. One of the most endearing qualities about French Bulldogs are their rumps, capped off with a short tail. A short tail seems like it would be easier to keep clean and healthy than a long tail, but this is not the case. Frenchies are not all born with the same tail length. Some tails will be longer than others. This practice is now frowned upon, but some breeders still partially dock tails. You may see French Bulldogs in rescues or shelters with these altered tails. Frenchies often have health problems with their tails and tail pockets — the little dip right below the tail and above their rectums. However, not all Frenchies have tail pockets and puppies sometimes do not get a tail pocket until they are six months old. A tail pocket is like a facial wrinkle right under the tail. Because of this quirk, the pocket cannot get cleaned as easily as other skin can. If left unchecked, this pocket can get infected. The tails themselves are often prone to genetic problems and sunburn, especially if the tails are white. Just like people, dogs love the sun but sometimes stay out too long and get burned. Frenchies with screw tails are often prone to a genetic condition called hemi-vertebrae. In order to create that cute short tail, the vertebrae of the spine are pressed together more closely than in dogs with normal tails. Hemi-vertebrae can cause problems walking, limb paralysis and incontinence — most commonly at an older age. Hemi-vertebrae is a condition that only a veterinarian can treat. Often surgery is the only way to make any lasting help for the most serious conditions. Rest and anti-inflammatory painkillers can help in less severe cases. It can only be prevented by not breeding dogs known to have the condition. Treating an infected tail pocket also requires the help of a vet. Symptoms of an infected tail pocket include swelling, oozing a pus-like material and sometimes a bad smell. The skin gets very itchy, so your Frenchie may be scooting or scratching his rear end more often than usual. The infection is caused by dirt, droppings, and bacteria that have not been cleaned out from the tail pocket. This can be a painful and life-threatening condition, so get your Frenchie to the vet right away for a thorough removal of the infection and a course of antibiotics. In extreme cases, surgery is necessary. The bad news is that hemi-vertebrae is not preventable. The good news is that both sunburn and tail pocket infections are. Sunburn is the easier of the two to prevent. Sunscreen containing zinc oxide also can help. If you are unsure about what sunscreen to use on your Frenchie, please contact your vet before putting any cream on your dog. Tail pockets need cleaning and drying to keep the skin clean, dry and infection-free. Use the mildest baby wipes you can find to clean the pocket and then use a clean cloth to dry. At first, you may need your vet to show you what to do. Wrapping up The small Frenchie tail can cause big problems. Those with corkscrew-shaped tails are prone to hemi-vertebrae, a painful condition which can cause paralysis. Tails of white Frenchies are particularly prone to sunburn but this can be easily prevented through sunscreen and keeping your Frenchie indoors during the hottest parts of the day. Most, but not all, Frenchies over the age of six months have tail pockets, which is like a facial wrinkle under the tail. Because of the wrinkle, bacteria can get trapped and can cause a sore, itchy and potentially life-threatening infection. This can be prevented by cleaning the tail pocket every day with baby wipes and drying it with a soft, clean cloth. This may seem like a lot of work, but soon you and your dog will get into the routine of using sunscreen and getting the tail pocket cleaned. Frenchies are worth the extra effort! Are they docked? These are very common questions. According to the breed standards , French Bulldogs have a short tail that is thick at its root and fine at the tip. Their tails hang low, i. French Bulldogs tail type can be either straight or screwed, but not curly like Pugs or Boston Terriers. More on types below. Are French Bulldogs Born with Tails? French Bulldog puppies are naturally born with very short tails. This feature is a part of the breed characteristics. One of their gene mutations causes the tail to grow unusually short. So, the next question that you might be thinking is about docking practices. French Bulldog tails are not cut off or docked. Frenchies are born with short and stumpy tails due to their genes, not because they have been docked i. Not only is it a painful procedure for your pooch, especially if not done at birth, but it also causes severe spine problems in the future. Also, tail docking disqualifies a dog from registration. According to the breed standards, French Bulldog can have 2 types of tails: 1 — A Straight Tail The shape of the tail is straight and its longer than screw-shaped type. The tail is set low on their rear, i. However, screw-shaped tails are not curly, i. Can French Bulldogs Wag their Tails? French Bulldogs cannot wag their tails because they are short, they wiggle their bottom instead, as a sign that they are happy. Still, some Frenchies will manage to wag or shake their tail for a bit. Insider Tip: French Bulldogs with straight and longer tails will tend to wag their tails more. Both English and French Bulldogs are known to have a tail pocket. But not all Frenchies have a tail pocket. However, French Bulldogs with a screw tail get a fold between their coat and where their tail sits, creating a fold, pocket or wrinkle. The French Bulldog tail pocket refers to the area under their tail. For some French Bulldogs, the tail pocket is more pronounced than for others. When French Bulldogs have a screw tail, they are predisposed to tail infections, also known as tail pocket infections. The skin folds or pocket in the base of the tail collects dirt and other substances and over time causes irritation. As a result of this, the tail can get infected. Tail Infection Symptoms The usual symptoms of tail infection are: Itching and redness in the area. Bad odour due to the pus and dead skin. Treatment for Tail Infection Asses the severity and if you are unsure, check with your vet. However, you can start by cleaning the area: Wash the area with warm water and antiseptic soap first to remove any dirt. Then, you can use an antiseptic spray or wipes. After that, use a clean gauze to dry the area. You can also apply a soothing cream or coconut oil to help with the healing and reduce skin irritation. Note: If you feel at any moment that the infection is getting worse, get in touch with your vet. Trim the hair around the tail regularly. Wash the tail wrinkles and pocket using dog grooming wipes easy and effective. Apply coconut oil to prevent skin irritation, itchiness and dryness. Hemivertebrae refers to the bones in the spine that are abnormally shaped. This condition often leads to the tail being incorrectly aligned. Screw tails are often the main cause of tail deformities and spinal issues due to the bones being twirled and crushing the spinal column and nerves. As a result, French Bulldogs with screw tails can suffer from spinal deformities, also known as hemivertebrae condition. Hemivertebrae Symptoms Hemivertebrae in French bulldogs can be discovered by performing an X-ray and physical examination. Symptoms include: Wobbliness and loss of hind leg function. In extreme cases, they can lose control of their bladder and bowels. Treatment for Tail Deformities Hemivertebrae In not so severe cases, treatment will usually consist of anti-inflammatory drugs. But, more severe cases will require a surgical procedure called Hemilaminectomy in order to relieve the bones pressing on the spinal cord. This is an unexpected expense and is one of many scenarios where dog insurance comes in handy. With Petplan pet insurance , all hereditary and chronic conditions are covered as standard. Preventing Tail Deformities Unfortunately, the only way that hemivertebrae can be prevented is through responsible breeding. When breeding dogs that have genetic malformities, we are putting another litter out there with a genetic predisposition to having these same problems. Not only do the soft membrane of their ears makes them vulnerable, but also their tails! Sunburns can be extremely uncomfortable, and harmful — your dog is vulnerable to skin cancer. Sunburn Symptoms Sunburn is also fairly easy to notice in your dog. Common sunburn signs include: Red spots or pinkier colouring. Sore skin, i. Peeling skin. If you notice that your Frenchie is severely sunburnt or blistered, call your vet. Treatment for Sunburn Your vet will examine your French Bulldog tail and skin to determine coat type and skin pigmentation. Knowing how long your dog has been under the sun will also determine if your dog is sunburnt. To treat a severe sunburn, heat exhaustion and dehydration, your dog will be provided with fluids. This helps to stabilize your Frenchie. Preventing Sunburn Here are some simple tips to prevent sunburn: Avoid sunbathing, especially if your dog loves roasting under the sun very unlikely. Avoid strong sun rays by keeping your dog indoors during peak hours of the day midday. Only allow your Frenchie time in the sun early in the morning and during the late afternoon and evening. Discuss safe sun-screen options with your vet. The ASPCA says that ingesting certain sunscreens can cause drooling, vomiting, diarrhoea, excessive thirst and lethargy in pets. Some of are screw shaped, some with little curves, and others very short and straight. The stumpy tail is a by-product of the early days of breeding. Do French bulldogs have tails at all? Yes, they do, but they have been bred to produce cute, short, and stumpy little tails, which most of the time means their butt is on show. There tends to be three different types of Frenchie tail: Straight down and stumpy Screwed and stumpy never curly though Thick root with a very fine tip Here is a photo of the Frenchie rear end, where you can see very clearly what a classic tail looks like in the modern day. Are French bulldogs born with tails? Or are French bulldogs born without tails? They are born with tails, albeit not a long tail like most breeds of dog have. Here is a photo of a newborn little of Frenchie puppies where you can see what their tails look like just after birth. As you can see from these feeding puppies, they have very short and stumpy tails. Does their tail cause health problems? Unfortunately, it can. I was only aware of this whilst researching for this article. In some cases, it can mean deformity and instability in the spinal column, and that could lead to spinal and nerve damage — and pain! This genetic condition will occur in some Frenchies and is a direct consequence of breeders trying to make the screw type tail the preferred look. French Bulldog straight tail initiative Interestingly, and I think this is a great move, in a scheme was launched in the UK by the national Kennel Club to move away from the screw, cork-screw or tight tail to a straighter tail. Because the breeding that has led to this appearance is actually an in-bred spinal defect. Without them dogs can suffer with ailments such as dilation of the rectum, incontinence, and hernias. It will take time, but it would lead to obvious benefits. Their aim is to get the breed back to having the short-drop tail which is originally had, as you can see in this image of a French bulldog taken in .This image is from , and you can clearly see a more pronounced longer tail. Never curling over back nor carried gaily. Why do French bulldogs have short tails? Great question, and as you saw from that historical photo higher up the page, Frenchies used to have longer tails than the ones we see today. So why did they become shorter, looking like that had been docked or cut off? By selective breeding, it would have been possible to get shorter tails over time which could have offered: Given them increased speed watch the video where we tracked how fast our Frenchie was with radar and GPS! Helped to prevent rat bites to the tail Over time, as French bulldogs have moved away from being working dogs, it has become part of their cosmetic appeal, and thus, selective breeding has let them to be shorter and shorter tails. Interestingly, our dog Claude still has a lot of this rat catching DNA in him. Our personal experience with Claude We have first-hand experience of the docked tail misconception ourselves. My wife and I were horrified to think that someone believed we had paid for our beloved dog to have his tail removed. We then explained to them that French bulldogs are born with tails, but very short and stumpy ones. This is due to the way in which they have been bred down the years with other short-tailed dogs such as pugs and terriers. Are French bulldogs tails cut off at all? Weird I know. If the last tail bone is not pointy, this is a strong indication that part of the tail has been cut off and removed. Can French bulldogs wag their tails? French Bulldogs cannot wag their tails. Some will manage to move their stumpy tail a little, but in the main, a wagging bottom is a sign that a Frenchie is happy as their tails are too short to actually wag. Our personal experience If you know anything about dogs, you will know that a wagging tail is a sign that the dog is happy. So how do we know if Claude is happy or not? Well our little man is a complete clown and he has lots of other ways in which to show us how he is feeling. Sometimes that will be by his eyes, but most of the time just the way in which he is jumping around, cuddling into us, and being his happy little character. What he lacks for in a tail he more than makes up for in his behaviour. Apparently, shepherds used to do to prevent rabies. I have no idea how that would prevent rabies, so if anyone can tell me I would love to hear it! Later in history, there was a trend to remove the tail tips from hunting dogs on order to prevent them from being injured. You would assume that the less tail the dog has, the less inclined they would be to pick up an injury. It still seems a barbaric practice though. Docking the tail is either done in a homemade fashion where the owner wraps a rubber band around it to cut off the flow of blood. The tail will then drop off after a few days. It can also be done by a vet, which you would think would be way safer, and would lead to less chance of infection. However, as far as I can gather, neither procedures use anaesthetic or stitches. Does it hurt a dog to have its tail cut off? Evidence indicates that puppies have similar sensitivity to pain as adult dogs. Puppies give repeated intense shrieking vocalisations the moment the tail is cut off and during stitching of the wound, indicating that they experience substantial pain. Inflammation and damage to the tissues also cause ongoing pain while the wound heals. There is also the risk of infection or other complications associated with this unnecessary surgery. For example, when a chronic neuroma forms at the amputation site. Neuromas are often very painful. I also looked up the law in the United States to see what the regulations were, and I am happy to say that tail docking is also prohibited for cosmetic purposes. Below you can see a graphic that I found on Wikipedia that the legal status of dog tail docking by country. Having researched for this article, I also now know that the shorter tails they are being bred in modern times, are in fact a spinal deformity, and can lead to health issues — you can see the most common French Bulldog health problems in this list. We love our dog, and thankfully he is very healthy with no concerns and we hope he continues to be so. But I am fully behind the new initiatives to bring the longer tail back, as for the future generations of the breed, it has to be done. It should also help you to counter any accusations of docking as we had when we took our dog for a walk that time. Do French Bulldogs Have Tails? French Bulldogs have naturally short tails which may be straight, or corkscrewed. The anatomy of their tail makes them prone to a range of health problems, which potential owners ought to be aware of. And the answer is yes, they are. French Bulldogs are born with naturally short tails. Most dogs have 18 to 23 tail bones, which are an extension of the vertebrae in their spine. But French Bulldogs have as few as nine, so their tail is very short. Straight tails start thick at the base and taper towards the tip. Screw tails have a series of tight bends in them, so that they sit like a cinnamon roll below the root. When Frenchie puppies with screw tails are born, their tails are supple enough to be gently unrolled. But as they mature, they set in place in a tight bun. French Bulldogs do not usually have their tails docked. Tail docking started out as a way of protecting working dogs from tail injuries, but Frenchies have no working history. When taxes were introduced on pet dogs, docking some pet breeds in order to pass them off as working dogs became popular too. French Bulldogs do not traditionally have their tails docked, but some do end up requiring surgical tail amputation for medical reasons. Frenchie dogs without tails The anatomy of the Frenchie tail means that their tail sits flush against the skin on their butt, creating a pocket underneath. This makes them vulnerable to a condition called intertrigo. Intertrigo is when two skin surfaces rub together, causing irritation and inflammation. The damaged skin becomes an entry point for bacteria, causing a tail pocket infection. Some French Bulldog tail pocket infections can be treated with antibiotics, but severe or recurring infections can only be resolved by removing the tail altogether. No Bulldogs have tails as long as, say, a Labrador or a Golden Retriever. But, Some French Bulldogs have straight tails, which naturally appear longer than a tail with a series of tight kinks in it. The frequency of the two French Bulldog tail types depends partly on your region. In the UK, not only should their tails be straight as previously mentioned, but the breed standard also says it ought to be long enough to cover the anus. Health Concerns of Frenchie Dogs With Short Tails Unfortunately, there are numerous complications associated with screw tails, the most notable of which are hemivertebrae and spina bifida. Hemivertebrae are misshapen bones in the tail and the base of the spine. Hemivertebrae are widespread among French Bulldogs, and highly heritable. Which means the puppies of affected dogs are likely to be affected too. Which is why removing screwtail Frenchies from breeding programmes and making straight tailed dogs the most acceptable and desirable option is the surest way to securing the future health of the breed. Like hemivertebrae, spina bifida can result in lameness and incontinence. Both conditions are expensive and difficult to treat, and cause a whole lot of heart ache. You can read more the health problems associated with screw tails in this article. Health Problem Associated With Flat Faces Even though we have mostly focussed on the Frenchie butt in this article, it would be wrong not to also mention the problems many Frenchies experience at the other end of their body. In fact, the two are actually linked, because screw tails and hemivertebrae are closely associated with flat faced dog breeds including Frenchies, English Bulldogs, Pugs and Boston Terriers. Heat stroke caused by the difficulty breathing. Dental problems. Damage to the surface of the eyes because the sockets are shallow and the eyeballs protrude from them. Infections in the wrinkled skin over their nose and brow. Elsewhere in their bodies, brachycephalic dogs like Frenchies also have higher than average frequencies of gastrointestinal problems, skin diseases, and difficulties giving birth. For all these reasons, unfortunately we do not recommend flat faced dogs including French Bulldogs as pets. Frenchie Tail Summary French Bulldogs are in fact born with tails, but they are short and inconspicuous. The two Frenchie tail types are straight and corkscrew. Owing to the health problems associated with corkscrew tails, some breeders and breed clubs are making a conscious decision to move away from them and focus on breeding lines with straight tails. What do you think? Would you prefer to see more Frenchies with longer, straighter tails? Let us know in the comments box down below! Alternative Dogs With Short Tails Unfortunately the best known dogs with short tails, such as Pugs and Bulldogs, share many of the same health problems as the unlucky Frenchie. The handsome Pembroke Welsh Corgi is a well known alternative with a naturally short tail and a normal length muzzle. Here are three other less well known breeds, which can all be born with naturally short tails. French Bulldogs are often best described as having a stumpy tail. While there are several other tail types, including a knot, screw-shaped or tapered, all Frenchie tails are still short. While breeders of unsavory roots back in the day used to deliberately change the shape of Frenchie tails while they were still newborns, this practice has long since been banned. Talk about a need-to-know fact when it comes to parental satisfaction. Because there is not enough of a tail there to wag! To show their happiness, Frenchies often wag their whole scrunchie butts instead! Except for a few that have a bit of a longer tail more on that in a moment. What do French Bulldogs tails look like? The three main kinds are below. French Bulldog screw tail A common one to find on the websites of dog breeds or online, if you do a wider search, is a Frenchie Bulldog screw tail. This tail waves from left to right and back, or, more commonly right to left and then back to right again. These tails are popular with breeders and, therefore, in Frenchies. However, screw tails are considered to be painful for Frenchies. Whether the screw is tight or a bit looser for a gentle curve, a screw tail brings pain for Frenchies due to the health problems that it usually brings along with it more on that in a moment. This tail is often thick at its root and then thin at its end. To our human eyes, it looks like the Frenchie has his tail swooped into a bun. The knob size itself can vary from pup to pup. What is a French Bulldog tail pocket? Not all French Bulldogs have tail pockets, but it is a common characteristic to Frenchies. Some have simple, almost invisible little indentations under their tail. Others have rather deep pouches that can be tricky to keep clean keep reading for help with this. This varies from litter to litter and from pup to pup! French Bulldog tail problems French Bulldogs can be prone to health problems that are thought to be connected to either their tail form or their tail pocket. The most common issue is tail pocket infections. Hemivertebrae This condition is most commonly associated with a French Bulldog screw tail, which is one of the reasons why a lot of the professionals out there frown upon this tail type. While hemivertebrae can be an issue with Frenchies that have straight tails, the likelihood genetics aside is thought to be lower. This is a scary word for a scary condition, unfortunately. A Frenchie gets his characteristic tail due to the vertebrae in the spine being compressed together. In some cases, this compression is unequal, and it can lead to a crooked and physically stressed spine that is called hemivertebrae. This is a serious condition as it can lead to issues with mobility or even limb paralysis, incontinence in seniors , and more. If your Frenchie is diagnosed with hemivertebrae, treatment often revolves around therapeutic details such as massage therapy or even physiotherapy. Hemivertebrae is a painful condition, and these kinds of strengthening and relaxing treatments can help ease the discomfort for your pooch. French Bulldog tail pocket infections can come from all sorts of causes. Popular ones include droppings that find their way in there, bits of grass, pollen or dirt, and even a moisture build-up that leads to an infection on its own. Symptoms of an infection include swelling and redness around the tail and its pocket. The area may also be itchy and dry, compelling your pooch to do some scooting across the floor. While it may seem mild to us, an infection can be excruciating and even life-threatening. The more often you do this, the easier it will be to catch something before it even has a chance to start and cause discomfort to your Frenchie. Clean it regularly As you may already know, Frenchies have sensitive skin and this is included in their tail pocket. If you notice a serious amount of build-up, you can also try hydrogen peroxide. This is stronger than a wipe or a regular cleaner, of course, but it can kill bacteria and mold growth effectively. Proper inspection and handling of his pocket are going to be as integral to his health as proper grooming, nail clipping, and teeth cleaning. Limit their sun exposure French Bulldogs are prone to sunburns because their fur is thin and fine. Limit his direct exposure to sunshine and also really make sure that you slather on the doggie-friendly sunscreen, paying particular attention to his tail and pocket. This will keep the skin moisturized, strong and a lot easier to take care of as far as cleaning and keeping healthy. But, what it all comes back to is remembering that they are natural, undocked tails and that proper assessment, cleaning, and protection of tail and tail pocket will help keep you and your pooch happy and healthy for a long time to come.
