Jug Dog Video History Although proper historical details regarding the origination of this breed is not available, the first crossing of its parents is said to take place in the s in the United States of America. Temperament The fearless, energetic and intelligent nature of the Jack Russell Terrier combined with the loving, sociable nature of the pug has made the jug dog a gentle, adorable and active breed. Being very alert, they are keen to know and be involved in all that is going around them. Some of them have inherited an obsession for digging and hunting instinct from the Jack Russell Terrier, making them bark aggressively at chipmunks or squirrels. They are loyal to their owner but may become stubborn at times. When left alone for long, these apartment dogs get destructive. Though friendly and tolerant towards other animals and family children when socialized, certain pug-like qualities endowed in them make them sensitive and jealous of the other pets and kids present in the household. Care Exercise This small, energetic breed needs at least 30 minutes of regular exercise in order to be physically and mentally fit. Provision of a large backyard or open space helps them to play and jog around freely. They even enjoy going out for family outings. Grooming The short coat of the jug dog makes it very easy to maintain. However, Jugs with longer hair and a rough coat need to be regularly brushed and maintained well. Occasional bathing and regular cleaning of their teeth and mouth ensure proper hygiene. Health Problems Certain congenital diseases inherited from both their parents are observed in them. Jug dogs that have a small muzzle like the pug develop certain respiratory disorders. Apart from this, they may also suffer from skin problems, allergies, inflamed cornea, weepy eyes, dislocation of the kneecaps, cherry eyes and so on. Therefore, the trainer is required to handle the dog in a firm and patient manner as harshness or punishment may make it shy away or react in an aggressive manner. However being quick learners, they will respond well when given rewards. Socialization and obedience training are also to be imparted since their puppy days so that they may get along well with strangers and other animals. Proper leash training is also to be given to keep their hunting instincts under control. Feeding Their diet should comprise of vitamin, protein, carbohydrates, fats and minerals. An adult dog should be given half cup of good quality dog food divided into two equal meals. The Jug dog puppies are to be fed with one-third cup of dog food three times a day when they are below six months of age. Whereas from six months to a year their feeding proportion is three-fourth cup of dog food divided into three meals. Whole proteins like lamb, turkey, eggs, chicken and beef as well as digestible carbohydrates like barley, oats and rice should also be included in their diet. Interesting facts These sturdy, healthy dogs may live up to 20 years when maintained well. They have special interest in games like tug-of-war, or fetching or hiding. It is one of the recent breeds to be registered by the American Canine Hybrid Club. JackPug Description The Jug is not a purebred dog. It is a cross between the Jack Russell Terrier and the Pug. The best way to determine the temperament of a mixed breed is to look up all breeds in the cross and know you can get any combination of any of thecharacteristics found in either breed. It is very common for breeders to breed multi-generation crosses. She takes after the JRT and is very high energy and very intelligent. Jugs should have access to a fenced yard as they love to run and dig. They will chase squirrels , rabbits, etc. He has lots of curiosity and play drive, but is equally interested in lap time with Mommy. He also enjoys time with our other mixed breed dog Terra whose mother was a purebred Golden Retriever and we believe a black Lab father. In Ollie's case, he requires a lamb and rice dog food, and I must ensure no one gives him anything with pork in it. I love watching Cesar Millan's the Dog Whisperer and have taken lots of tips from the show in regards to being the pack leader. I was a dog trainer with the local county 4-H program and have been around all types of breeds for many years; Cesar's principals are phenomenal. Ollie can have an attitude when he does not get what he wants when he wants it, so I really do have to use the firm assertive-dominant role with him. He has a super high drive to watch for squirrels and chipmunks and will bark very aggressively toward them. I sometimes let him outside on the enclosed deck to chase them away, HA HA. He thinks it's great. I also developed a toy that he really has a drive to play with; it is a hard plastic ball, large enough not to get stuck in his jaws which can really be strong and it has two metal ball bearings inside it. I let him chase it all over the 1st floor of our home. I just close off sections with lots of places for it to get stuck. I also have the main play area pretty well ball proofed. If it gets stuck somewhere he will usually come and get me but you have to keep an eye or an ear out for him since he takes out his frustration on anything nearby. This includes extension cords, patio door blinds or the ottoman. Having consistency on the rules of good behavior during playtime keeps the house from being taken over by this little character. So overall, this breed is a joy to have around. He is my constant companion, loves attention from anyone and of course thinks he's the best. I really fell in love with his looks on first sight but his personality has truly taken my heart. She can do that and she can stand and spin in a circle. She loves kids and other animals; she has never hurt a fly. She loves everyone. Her name is Zoey. She was the only white Jug out of the litter. We love her very much. Bugs is four months old. His mom is a Jack Russell Terrier and his dad is a Pug. My husband bought Bugs for me as a Christmas present. Bugs is wonderful and smart, however he demands a lot of attention and exercise. When we are not working we walk Bugs a couple of miles a day. When working, we take him with us and walk him every time we are on a break. He wasn't too difficult to housebreak.I took him to the vet yesterday for his final puppy series and first rabies. He may be a small dog, but he has a big dog attitude. He fears nothing. Bugs is so very sweet. He is very affectionate, but enjoys roughhousing as well. He sometimes bites when playing and we are working on that. He does not like to be told "No. When you tell him No, he looks at you quizzically and then barks at you to express his annoyance. I love him and he is awesome. He loves going through drive-throughs at restaurants where people will tell him how adorable he is. Although, he is very hyper Jack Russell. I got Nugly when he was 3 months old from a pet store. It only took me 2 weeks to have him housebroken and 3 weeks to have him sitting, lying down on command and giving me paw. He is very intelligent. She can be quite greedy and has the tenacity of a Jack Russell Terrier. She loves to play and has been complimented on how placid she is around people. She has been a great delight to have in our home. Tootie is extremely intelligent and energetic. It was love at first sight with her and my son 4 years old. Everywhere we take her we are literally stopped by people off the street because she is just sooo CUTE. At times she can be sneaky and tries to get away with things she should not be doing. She fits in well with my kids. We love Tootie very much! If you decide to buy a puppy from a breeder, you need to find a reputable and responsible breeder to avoid dealing with a puppy mill. The Jug can be quite energetic because of its Jack Russell heritage but will also be calm thanks to the Pug. They can be easily trained because they are intelligent but might be prone to small dog stubbornness. They are overall healthy dogs with long lifespans and are very friendly and social dogs. The Jug is best for apartments or houses, depending on their nature. The Jug can be the best of both parents. The Jug has been around since the s. They are thought to have been crossbred in the s in America and are currently one of the more popular hybrid dogs. These are feisty, loving dogs that do not do well when left alone for long, and as long as the Jugs have been well socialized, they love playing with other dogs and children. They are also very courageous dogs that will stand their ground no matter the threat. Are These Dogs Good for Families? If there are younger children in the household, they should be supervised and need to be taught how to approach and play with a dog appropriately and gently. The Jug will bond well with everyone in the family and enjoys spending time and playing with everyone. They do have a strong prey drive and might attempt to chase smaller animals, but happy and positive relationships will form if they are raised with them. An average of just under 1 cup per day spread out to twice per day should be sufficient. Allowing the Jug time to run, and playtime with a ball are additional exercises that will benefit your dog immensely. Only use positive reinforcement with the Jug or aggressive and destructive behaviors might emerge. However, if your Jug has more of a rough coat taken after their rough-coated Jack Russell parent, they will need to be brushed more often. This is where owning a small dog saves money over other dogs as you will spend less money on dog food. As a rule of thumb, you should feed your adult dog 1 cup of food per day for every 15 to 20 pounds of body weight. For most Jugs, this works out to one cup of dog food per day. They are alert dogs that tend to bark when they hear noises and make great watch dogs. For the most part, mixed breed dogs tend to be healthier than purebred dogs. Even though Jugs are relatively healthy dogs, all breeds have their own health issues. Some health issues for Jug owners to watch out for are dry eyes , skin allergies , hip dysplasia , and respiratory issues. The main culprit is their skin folds that can trap dirt as well as more powerful scent emitting glands. The best way to reduce any dog smell is to take care of their coat with regular brushings. However, like all small dogs, they are not immune from small dog syndrome and so it is important to make sure they are trained and socialized early in their life. A reputable breeder puts a lot of blood, sweat, and tears—and money—to ensure that their dogs are healthy and well-maintained. Where you get your Poodle also affects how much you pay for it. There are three types, which differ based on size: Standard: the largest of the three types Miniature: a medium-size Poodle Toy: the smallest of the three types A guilty looking two color Poodle Reputable Poodle Breeder Anyone who wants a purebred Poodle should find a reputable breeder. A reputable breeder is someone with a specific breeding business whose job is to produce the best dogs. As I mentioned above, the cost varies depending on the Poodle type you choose. Accidental Breeder An accidental breeder is exactly what it sounds like—someone who is not in the business of breeding but has a pregnant dog. In most cases, people who run puppy mills do not prioritize the health and safety of their pups. They have lots of dogs, usually more than they can take care of, to make the greatest profit possible. Getting a dog from a puppy mill is risky; you may get a dog with long-term health problems, a shorter life span, or genetic issues. So how do you avoid puppy mills? Online forums are an excellent place to look, especially ones specific to your area. Be sure to also check out breeder reviews. The main advantage of shelter dogs is the price. Additionally, most of the time, the shelter ensures that the dog already has all its shots before it goes home with you, saving you some of the healthcare costs. Read on to find out all you need to know about poodle prices! The cost of a Poodle can vary greatly depending on the size, pedigree and breeder. Average Poodle Cost The average cost of a Poodle will depend on various factors such as the type of Poodle, its age and size. Prices may vary based on geographic location and quality of breeding for each individual pooch. It is important to also factor in additional costs when considering purchasing a poodle puppy. Factors Affecting Poodle Price When considering the price of a poodle, there are several factors that come into play. The most significant factor is the size and type of poodle you choose. Standard and miniature poodles cost more than toy or teacup varieties. The other major factor in setting the cost of a poodle is where it was bred and raised. Cost of Teacup, Toy, and Standard Sized Poodles The cost of poodles can vary greatly depending on their size and type. Teacup or toy poodles are particularly small, often weighing less than 4 pounds, while standard-sized poodles generally weigh between pounds. This difference in size results in a significant price discrepancy between the two types of dogs. It is important to note that aside from the purchase price itself, there will also be ongoing costs associated with owning any kind of pet such as food, veterinarian visits, grooming supplies — these are all things you should consider when budgeting how much it will cost to own an adorable puppy! Adoption vs Buying a Puppy Poodle Adoption vs Buying a Puppy Poodle is an important debate when it comes to choosing the right pet for your family. Adopting a poodle can be less expensive than buying one, but there are pros and cons to both options. Adoption is often the most cost-effective way of getting a poodle as many shelters have fixed fees or even waived adoption fees during special events. On the other hand, purchasing a puppy from a breeder means you will know exactly what type of parentage your pup has and its specific breed characteristics — this can be especially beneficial if you plan on entering your pup into shows or competitions later down the line. Some breeders also provide guarantees regarding the health of their puppies so you can rest assured knowing that if any issues arise within certain timelines then replacements might be available too. Show quality poodles require significant investment in both time and money. In addition to this initial fee, other costs should be taken into consideration including health testing fees for breeding stock such as eye exams and vet checkups prior to making any purchase decisions. Additionally, training classes may also be needed if you plan on showing your dog — often these classes are structured over an extended period of time which can add up quickly in terms of both cost and commitment. Investing in a show quality poodle is not something that should be taken lightly — with proper research and due diligence however it can be incredibly rewarding! After you initially purchase the pup, ongoing expenses are necessary to keep the dog healthy and happy throughout its life. Veterinary care is an essential cost for any pet owner and should not be overlooked when considering owning a poodle. Routine checkups, immunizations, parasite prevention treatments, medications and other veterinary services will need to be purchased from time to time in order to keep your pup safe and healthy. Food is another major expense when it comes to owning a poodle. Quality food should be provided in order for them to have proper nutrition throughout their life. Grooming costs must also be factored into the overall price of ownership as well since regular brushing, bathing and trimming of nails is required for this breed in particular due its long locks of fur which tend to tangle easily if not treated properly on occasion. .Professional grooming services might come with some additional fees but they offer convenience since all tasks are usually completed during one appointment instead of having multiple visits per session like what would happen doing it yourself or hiring someone privately on an hourly basis outside of these shops specialized in caring for these furry pals specifically. Before taking the plunge, one of my main concerns was the cost. So, after doing some research, I came up with several ways that I could save money on the cost of a poodle. The first thing I did was look into adoption centers in my area. Plus, adopting an animal not only helps you save money but also saves lives! Next, I talked to friends and family who already owned poodles or similar breeds. They were able to provide me with valuable advice on things like food type, veterinary care tips and even grooming requirements — all without costing me anything extra! Finally and perhaps most importantly , before making any big purchases for my new pup food bowls or toys… , I shopped around online for discounts or sales. This way, instead of paying full price at the pet store down the street, I saved quite a bit by looking around different stores and websites until finding just what we needed at an unbeatable deal. In conclusion, there are lots of easy ways to save money on the cost of owning a poodle if you know where to look and who to talk too. Avoid foods that include artificial colors, flavors, and preservatives whenever possible. Any food you decide to feed your puppy might not agree with their digestion at first, depending on what they have been fed up to this point. The type of food that you offer for both meals and snacks has a direct affect on your Boxer's health both now and in the future. Also of importance is a feeding schedule and making sure that you offer the proper amounts. This section will cover everything you need to know in order to provide a well-balanced, nutritious diet for your Boxer puppy, adult, or senior. How Often to Feed a Boxer Puppy or Dog Let's look at a summary and then the details: Puppies under 12 weeks: free-fed Puppies and up to the 2-year mark: 3 meals per day Adults 2 years and up: 1 to 2 meals per day Young pups 8 to 12 weeks old: Very young pups, and particularly those that are a bit underweight, should be free-fed for at least the first month at their new home. This is the method of having fresh food accessible at all times. For a pup still trying to gain their bearings, you may need to lead them to their bowl throughout the day. Note that food should be thrown out and the bowl washed and then refilled several times per day as opposed to just topping off the food since pups may not be interested in stale food. Growing pup to 2 year mark: It's best to get a Boxer onto a feeding schedule as soon as possible. Schedules of anything feeding, exercise, sleep time, etc. Young Boxers often struggle a bit to fill out and during the 1 to 2-year mark Boxers can go through a 'skinny phase', so 3 meals per day, plus snacks, can work well during this time. Adults 2 years and up: Most adult Boxers that have reached their final adult weight and height do well with 2 meals per day, plus snacks. If snacks are regular and of substance, a Boxer may be perfectly content with 1 main meal per day. Note that this breed is prone to bloat, so you want to avoid letting a Boxer get so hungry that he rapidly gulps his food down. If that is the case, increase the frequency of meals or use a slow-feed bowl; stainless-steel is best, something like Mr. How Much to Feed a Boxer Puppy or Dog The exact serving size that is appropriate for each Boxer varies and depends mainly on age and current weight but also is affected by activity level, health status, type of food wet vs dry , and individual metabolism. This said, there are general guidelines: Puppies usually require about 55 calories for each pound of body weight. Young pups might eat a bit over a cup a day, older pups can eat up to 3 cups a day. Adults need fewer calories per pound of body weight than their younger counterparts, about .Depending on an adult Boxer dog's size, food is usually in the 3 to 5 cup per day range. To know exactly how much to give your Boxer, know your dog's weight. Don't guess since that can be wildly off. Then, look at the feeding guidelines on the bag of kibble; these are listed by age and weight and are usually pretty spot on. Dry Kibble vs Wet Canned Though many Boxers may prefer wet canned food, dry kibble is better to maintain healthy teeth and gum and a strong jaw. You'll still have to provide some level of at-home dental care , but the crunch of a hard kibble will work to some extent to remove plaque. Additionally, dry food seems to keep the stools firmer and healthier. If your Boxer is a finicky eater and balks at dry food, try mixing in just a bit of canned stick with the same brand or add just a bit of water or low-sodium chicken or beef broth. Grain vs Grain-free It's wasn't that long ago that putting a dog on a grain-free diet wasn't much of a big deal. Some grains, especially those with gluten, can cause excessive gas , upset stomach, and other issues. And, some dogs are allergic to wheat or gluten which can manifest as itching and other skin problems. But recently, a suspected link between certain grain-free dog foods and dilated cardiomyopathy DCM, a canine heart disease caused veterinary experts to take pause. And, since Boxers are one of the breeds prone to DCM, it's important to understand where things are on this. Though it was first thought that any grain-free diet may be the cause, the current thought is that it is a BEG diet, meaning boutique small specialty brands that have exotic meats non-traditional meats like alligator, kangaroo, bison, venison, etc. Many more studies need to be done for conclusive answers to be found. For now, it is recommended to offer healthy grains and this can be done while avoiding gluten if your Boxer has an issue with it. Navigating the Many Choices of Dog Foods What to Avoid: Many brands are guilty of having at least one of these elements that you do not want your Boxer's food to have: No grains at all. Until conclusive studies are complete, play it safe and offer a kibble with some level of healthy grains unless the veterinarian recommends otherwise Boxer needs to be on a specific grain-free diet, etc. Synthetic preservatives. These can be toxic. Butylated hydroxyanisole BHA , butylated hydroxytoluene BHT , and ethoxyquin, just to name a few, are linked to behavioral issues, organ damage, and some forms of cancer. Artificial coloring. Common dyes like Yellow 5 and 6 and Blue 2 are linked to behavioral and health issues. Artificial flavor enhancers. MSG is one of the worst, it is linked to anxiety, rapid heartbeat, and breathing issues. Generic animal digest, meats, oils, or fats. When anything is listed as 'animal', it is derived from a 4-D animal: dead, dying, diseased or disabled animals and can literally be any meat from any animal at all: minks from mink farms, roadkill, zoo animals, expired meats from supermarkets and butcher shops, etc. Fillers are cheap ingredients that are put into dog food to bulk it up but they have little to no nutritional value. The 'food' goes right through their system; a dog will eat but be hungry again soon afterward and this is one cause of coprophagia eating feces. These are the animal parts that are not fit for human consumption and includes such things as spinal tissue, lungs, spleens, hooves, tails, undeveloped eggs, etc. Made outside North America since meats from overseas can be questionable. The kibble will be preserved using a vitamin blend often listed as mixed tocopherals and will be naturally flavored and colored. Some level of grains. Grains that are generally well-tolerated include rice, oatmeal, and quinoa. Wholesome real meats, veggies, and fruits. Some ingredients sourced from Norway are fine; this country has very strict guidelines. If you are not sure what is in your Boxer's food, investigate it. Know about grain content and the presence or lack of additives and subpar ingredients. Recommended Dog Food for Boxers Please note that the following recommendations are formulas with some level of healthy grains; if you did not read the previous ' Grain vs Grain-free ' you may wish to do so before continuing on. This meets all of the requirements of what you're looking for. There are no synthetic preservatives; vitamins are used instead shown as mixed tocopherals. The grains in this formula are generally very well tolerated: quinoa technically a seed , oatmeal, and barley. There are 3 different recipes to choose from: beef, chicken, or lamb. Other ingredients include peas, salmon, carrots, apples, blueberries, and flaxseed. There are good levels of glucosamine chondroitin vital for joint health , antioxidants, and omega fatty acids important for skin and coat health. There are no by-products, fillers, or generic meats or oils and this is sourced and made in the USA. For this one, the base is chicken a very classic tasty protein that most dogs love , along with oatmeal, brown rice, ground barley, peas, flaxseed, carrots, tomato pomace, spinach, sweet potatoes, apples, and blueberries. All other ingredients shown on the label are either vitamins and minerals or natural preservatives. This has no wheat, corn, soy, meat by-products, artificial flavors, colors or preservatives, and this is made in the USA. This brand offers a top-quality formula that is gluten-free. There is no wheat, corn, soy, by-products, artificial flavors, artificial colors, or chemical preservatives. The base is chicken and brown rice and other ingredients include white rice, oatmeal, rice bran, avocado, flax seed, herring, and kelp. It has good levels of omega fatty acids and antioxidants. The one trade-off for having it be gluten-free is that it does not contain any fruit; however, it does have all required vitamins and minerals and you can always offers a small amount of fresh fruit as snacks. Homemade Vs Commercial Commercial dog food is convenient and, if you choose a superior brand, it will ensure that your Boxer receives all needed nutrients and is on a well-rounded and well-balanced diet. And, home cooked food gives you complete control over what your Boxer eats and does not eat and can be tweaked to satisfy a finicky eater. So, there are pros and cons to each. Whether you opt for a top-quality kibble or you use good cuts of meat and fish and fresh produce in homemade meals, neither option is super-cheap. Because, of course, you get what you pay for. But, if you buy in bulk and lean toward frozen vegetables and fruits, home cooking may be a bit less expensive. That said, when you prepare meals at home, you'll need to offer a good daily vitamin and mineral supplement even good brands of kibble need to add this in because it's nearly impossible for a dog to receive all nutrients just from food alone. Some of the foods that can be incorporated into meals include: Proteins: Chicken, turkey, veal, beef, fish mackeral, haddock, salmon, whitefish, cod, and others , eggs, and certain beans kidney, lima Vegetables: Carrots, broccoli in moderation , potato, sweet potato, sugar snap peas, green beans, spinach Fruits: Blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, pumpkin Grains: Quinoa, oatmeal, rice Related Articles: Best Snacks, Chews, and Treats for a Boxer - A great rundown of the difference between these 3 things and top recommendations. Health and breeding information Possible diseases in mixed breeds of German Shepherd and Wolfsspitz. German Shepherds are characterized by their impressive presence and strength and enjoy great popularity among dog lovers. The Wolfsspitz is equally known for its intelligence, courage, and affectionate nature, and scores points for its special friendliness and high adaptability. Together, the combination of these two breeds creates a truly fascinating overall picture. However, mixed breeds of these breeds are not only known for their positive qualities, they can also be prone to or inherit certain diseases. Mixed breeds of German Shepherd and Wolfsspitz tend to have an increased risk of inherited diseases. These include, for example, hip dysplasia HD , a serious malformation of the hip joints that can lead to significant movement restrictions. Other diseases such as osteochondritis dissecans OCD , a degenerative disease of bone and articular cartilage, or atopy, in which allergic reactions of the immune system occur, may be more prevalent in this mix. Environmental factors can further promote these diseases, especially if the dogs are not adequately vaccinated or cared for. It is therefore essential to have such a mixed breed checked regularly by a veterinarian. Early detection and timely treatment of disease symptoms or ailments are of utmost importance. Prevention is critical to prevent health complications in German Shepherd and Wolfsspitz mixes. This includes routine health checks, vaccinations, a balanced diet, adequate exercise and ongoing health monitoring. Anyone owning or considering owning such a mongrel should always be mindful to seek professional advice and assistance to help their four-legged friend live a long and healthy life. What does this mongrel look like? The appearance of the mongrel between a German Shepherd and a Wolfsspitz is a harmonious combination of both breeds. Typically, the coat of this mixed breed presents a medium length and a soft texture. While the dominant shades are mostly black and brown, the color spectrum of this dog may also include shades of red or cream. The texture of the coat varies depending on the genetic heritage of the animal. It can be both smooth and slightly wavy, depending on which genetic traits were inherited more strongly. A characteristic feature of this mongrel is the often longer hair in the head and ear area, which gives the dog a particularly attractive and distinctive appearance. In addition, the mongrel can have a robust stature, marked by the athletic physiognomy of the German Shepherd, combined with the somewhat more compact and fluffy appearance of the Keeshond. His eyes often radiate deep intelligence and curiosity, while his ears can either stand erect or tilt slightly forward, depending on the dominance of his inherited genes. His paws are strong and well padded, giving him good mobility in both urban and rural environments. The tail, which is often carried bushy and high, often swings in a wide arc when pleased or excited. This mongrel displays an impressive fusion of strength, elegance and charm in its overall appearance, making it a real head turner. It should be noted, however, that due to genetic diversity, coat texture and other physical characteristics may vary. In some cases, certain areas of the body may be more densely coated, while other regions may have less fur. This is a fascinating example of the diversity found in the world of mixed breed dogs. Fur length. Both of these dogs can be friendly but personalities differ, so you never know. The German Shepherd is known for being intelligent, curious, and alert. Von Stephanitz had in his mind what a good working dog should be and a few generations of breeding fulfilled what Hektor envisioned. Horand von Grafrath is known to be the first German Shepherd Dog. Horand von Grafrath was bred to other similar styled dogs that were believed to have the same traits as what Von Stephanitz was looking for. His most successful offspring was Hektor von Schwaben. Von Stephanitz is widely credited for being the founder of this incredible breed. Von Stephanitz had intended for his breed to work as herding dogs, however, as Germany became more and more industrialized he saw the need to make it working dog. He convinced the German government to use the breed. The breed initially became popular in World War 1. Many American and allied servicemen grew attached to the breed during the war and brought them back to the states after the war was over. The Allied troops fell in love with the breed but not with the fact that it had German roots. It became common for police departments and those looking for true working dogs to import their dogs from Germany because the American dogs had such bad health problems. This is an older breed of dog. It has quite the history. Throughout some political unrest in Holland it was a symbol of the Rebel Party and it quickly became popular among ordinary people. When this party was overthrown many dogs were destroyed but it did manage to hold on. Around the year interest in the breed picked back up and it migrated away from just being on barges and such. It became a recognized breed with the American Kennel Club in .Should a Keeshond Mix take after their Kees parent, they will be a small dog that makes a great companion for single owners and for families. They also often make great watchdogs. Keeshonden are playful and energetic. They are also affectionate, friendly, and love to be around their families. They tend to get along well with children and other dogs, but may need some extra socialization with other small pets. They also tend to be open and friendly with strangers once introduced, but will bark to alert you. If you do not train your dog to stop barking early on, their alert barking can become a nuisance behavior. If the other parent breed has similar temperament traits, then you can likely expect the same from a Keeshond Mix. You will still want to ask the breeder about them as they will introduce their own quirks that you will want to be aware of. You can also meet the mother in person to see what her temperament is like and the behavior she is modeling for puppies. The breeder should have started some training and socialization. However, it is up to you to continue to train and socialize a puppy once you get them home. The Keeshond is a highly adaptable dog that does well in homes with larger yards as well as apartments. They do not like to be left alone for long periods of time and tend to handle most climates well. If the other parent breed is also highly adaptable, then you can expect the same from a Keeshond Mix. Mixed-breed dogs can sometimes be healthier than purebred dogs. But, it all depends on the parents, and good breed practices make a huge difference. Potential health concerns to be aware of in a Keeshond Mix that come from the Keeshond can include patellar luxation , eye issues, elbow dysplasia, and hip dysplasia. You will want to talk to the breeder about the other parent breed. Since reputable breeders screen their dogs to avoid passing preventable issues to puppies, you should be able to ask them about the health and genetic history of both of the parents. You can also ask about any health clearances or tests that have been done. The Keeshond is a highly trainable dog. They are eager to please and intelligent, which means they pick up on things quickly. If the other parent breed is also easy to train, then you can expect something similar from a Keeshond Mix. A Keeshond Mix can inherit a coat that is just like one of their parents or a coat that is some combination of both. If they end up with a Kees coat, they will shed moderately year-round, shed heavier as the seasons change, need weekly brushing, and require professional grooming every weeks. The dog groomer will be able to help with some of this during appointments, but you will still need to take care of things at home between visits. Nail trims once or twice a month keep nails from growing too long. Ear checks on a weekly basis with careful cleanings as needed can help prevent ear infections. Daily brushing with a toothpaste for dogs or using an enzyme toothpaste every day, in addition to cleanings at the vet as needed, can help prevent painful dental diseases later in life. A Kees sits in a moderate activity range. Daily walks and some playtime or time to run are usually enough for this dog, but they will likely be up for more activity if you are. If the other parent breed is similar, then you can expect the same from a Keeshond Mix. If the other parent breed requires more or less daily activity, then you will need to be prepared for that potential range. Fully-grown Keeshonden usually stand inches tall and weigh pounds. The other parent breed can have a big effect on this, especially if they are the mother. So, you need to ask the breeder about them. A Keeshond generally lives for years. Although the other parent breed may affect this slightly, you should be able to expect a similar average life span from Keeshond Mixes. Featured Keeshond Mix Article.

I was so glad that I could actually see the chunks of carrots, pumpkins and peas! The kind of satisfaction I felt was great. But when my dog gobbled up everything, I was completely sure that this was the right food for my dog. I especially liked the small pouches which were very convenient. Casper loved the food. RCB are riding on momentum, and it seems difficult to stop them. The IPL final will be played at the Chinnaswamy. Is it their time to win the trophy? AB de Villiers is the man of the match. No prizes for guessing: "I was very nervous. Just wanted to focus on the basics. Knew if I was till the end, we would be close. Speaks volumes about the character of the side. We were down and out in the first half of the tournament and have turned it around. Cricket is a funny game, it is never over until it is over. That should end a lot of debates about who is the best batsman going around. So calm and composed under pressure. AB took Iqbal took along. The opposition was worried about him. Credit to Iqbal to for maintaining his composure. The pitch settled in the second half. Did not mind the showers, that settled the track. It could not be better scripted one for us. The crowd has always supported us, this one os for the crowd. With not a little help from Iqbal Abdulla of course. There's one more game in Delhi to get to the finals. At one point, we were down to , but it was very good batting by Dwayne Smith. AB de Villiers at the other end was like a monk and carried the team all by himself. They are in the finals. This is cricket, you can never count any team out. Kohli is pumped, AB is calm. Take a bow champ. The crowd has gone nuts, Chinnaswamy has lost its roof. This is not a one-man show. Kohli has gone from being furious to being ecstatic to being emotional. He has given De Villiers the biggest and the warmest of hugs and is over the moon at the moment. The RCB players are celebrating in the middle! Insane batting from de Villiers. From being 5 down in the first 6 overs, RCB now need 3 runs off 12 balls! That's some comeback! That is right. Full on the pads, flicked like an opening Test batsman to the deep square leg fence. This is pathetic bowling from Bravo. He has wilted under pressure, but take a bow Iqbal Abdulla. Outside off this time, he slashes hard at it, and gets a thick edge that goes fine to the third man fence. Short ball on the body, he fends it away from him, and fine enough to beat a diving fine-leg. And now Abdulla joins the party. Swivels around nicely and then helps is around to the fine leg boundary. Kohli is like a cat at the boundary jumping around. RCB have scripted magic. Down leg. And now Raina is furious with the call. Now Raina is furious! That ball had touched the pad, but it was given as a wide. Bravo couldn't believe it. Raina was exchanging words with the umpire. On the off stump, he goes for a reverse sweep but the ball hits the thigh pad and runs to the third man fence. He is running hot and everything is going for him. Lucky, but he deserves all the luck today. Can the DJ do some magic. He will bowl now. RCB in the driver's seat now. Wow AB has scripted something magic. If don't get you will! Unleashes the reverse sweep! Takes a full ball from outside leg and hits it past short third man. And now some cheek. Changes his position, gets into a reverse position and then just places it between point and short third man. The crowd is up and shouting their lungs out. Make a statue of AB in that position already. AB de Villiers, you beauty! If Kohli carried them to the playoffs, it's AB who's taking them to the finals. The best batsman in the world for a reason. That is a slot ball, and de Villiers gets underneath that and launches it over deep midwicket and very very deep. And AB was sitting back waiting for the slower ball and smoked it over deep mid-wicket. Insane stuff, this is comeback of gigantic proportions. Surely AB can put the rain on hold too.AB Can Do Everything. Game ON. Massive, massive over for RCB. Two gigantic sixes in that over have swung the game in the favour of the home side. The score is after .Full toss, he laps it up nicely and pulls it over deep midwicket. Jakati tried the other ball, slipped away and Abdulla smoked it over mid-wicket. This is terrible ball under pressure at the crunch time. Gujarat letting this slip. Kohli is smiling now, perhaps for the first time tonight. Slog sweeps a ball from outside off to the deep square leg fence. That was stroke of pure genius, Shuffles across, swats and then nonchalantly sweeps it over square leg for a maximum. This is some innings under pressure. Expensive over from Smith. AB has climbed into him. He got on top of the ball this time. Bravo come in, running in from long on, and dives forward to gulp the ball. But, as fate would have it perhaps, the ball landed just short of him. For a moment, AB would have had his heart in this mouth. For me, it's a one stop website for everything that my husky needs. From puppy food to toys to dog essentials, Supertails has got me covered. Some people may be looking for a toy poodle in a standout shade that is not easy to find. Since there is a small number of these special colored puppies, their price will increase. For example, Phantom will likely be pricier than others like black, silver, or brown, which are more frequently available. Whether You Are Adopting, Buying, or Rehoming Rehoming a pet is different from adopting one in that you either acquire a puppy that has been abandoned or are given one by someone unable to keep the dog for their reasons. On the other hand, you can receive a pet through adoption by going to a dog adoption facility. Although there may still be a fee to fund their time at the facility, it will usually be considerably cheaper than purchasing one. Additionally, your adoption price will probably include vaccinations, neutering, and microchipping costs, saving you a few more bucks. Buying puppies is usually expensive because the breeder has already incurred the cost of veterinary care and breeding the pups to ensure they come out perfectly. Lineage The bloodline of a toy poodle puppy is another significant factor that affects the pricing. Puppies are more priced if anyone in their line of descent has received any kind of recognition, say a competition. Costs differ between canines with a clean medical record and those with underlying or inherited health issues. Pets with any health issues will be cheaper than those in tip-top condition. Breeder If you buy from a reputable, high-end breeder, prices will generally be higher. This is because the breeder incurs significant costs related to maintaining their business, which is paid for by selling puppies. It is assumed that a high-end breeder will produce pups of a higher caliber than their cheaper counterparts. While this argument may have some truth, it is not always true. You can also get pups that are healthy from a start-up breeder. In addition to having less going on than an established breeder, new breeders must set fair prices to attract more clients. Extra Costs Of Owning A Toy Poodle The decision to get a new puppy is exhilarating, but frequently people fail to consider the financial obligations that come with it adequately. In fact, you may take this as your starting point. You might not realize how expensive it is to raise a puppy. Here are some extra costs to factor in your decision to get a toy poodle: Spaying or neutering Consider having your dog spayed or neutered if you intend to use it for breeding. Spaying a pet is more expensive than neutering it. Toys And Treats The well-being of your dog depends on toys. Negative behaviors can be delayed by using toys. Treats help reinforce good behavior in your furry buddy. Deworming Deworming is another factor that should not be overlooked when considering the additional costs of owning a pet. In fact, puppy age is the age range most susceptible to worm infection. To keep your dog healthy, ensure you deworm your puppy thrice a year. Vaccinations Immunizations are crucial because they will protect your puppy from illnesses and infections. Your veterinarian will determine the cost of the puppy immunizations. The first shot is administered between 6 and 8 weeks, while the second is a week or two later. Suppose you buy your toy poodle from a reputable breeder or rescue organization. In that case, the vaccinations will already be done before you pick up your new pet. Remember, you must give your dog a booster vaccination every year. Training Costs Depending on your demands, puppy training sessions might range in price. If you want an intensive training program that will teach your furry buddy all the essentials in a matter of days, that will be more expensive. Private lessons are also more expensive than group training. Services for dog walking and dog daycare are commonly available. Ensure you know what works for your pet because not every dog should go to doggie daycare, especially if they have trouble mingling with other dogs or lack social skills. However, there are occasions when it is vital to avoid boredom and give dogs that would otherwise spend long days alone the human-canine connection they require. All in all, do not leave your pup alone for long hours. Apart from avoiding a mess in your house, your dog needs to go outside and play. While making your decision, understand that dog walking is cheaper than daycare. Insurance Pet insurance will help you save money on your total veterinary expenses if your dog gets hurt or becomes ill. If you have pet insurance, you may relax knowing that you will be covered financially if your dog or cat is sick or wounded. Without pet insurance, you face the risk of being hit with a hefty bill in the unfortunate event of the worst-case scenario because veterinary visits have unexpected costs. Make sure the service provider you choose caters to the specific breed you have, covers any underlying issues your pet may have, and is within your budget. Where You Live The cost of a puppy also depends on where you reside; in California, for example, since it is among the most expensive states, the price for a toy poodle will be higher than in Massachusetts due to the drastically lower cost of living there. You may opt to get your pup from a cheaper state; however, you also need to account for the price of getting the toy poodle puppy there and back to your residence. In the excitement of getting ready to bring a new puppy into your home, it can be easy to overlook how much of a financial commitment the dog involves. Making a budget for your new animal family member is a great way to prepare yourself for unforeseen costs. Less - The Toy Poodles have a shoulder height of up to 25 cm 10 in and weigh kg lbs. Poodles are very elegant in appearance. They have a long, narrow muzzle, slight stop point at which the forehead meets the muzzle , dark eyes, and wide ears. Toy Poodles have flat backs, straight, docked tails and small, oval feet. Their length is approximately the same as their height. The Toy Poodle is sensitive, intelligent, lively, playful, proud, and elegant. It bonds closely with family and makes a great companion. Toy Poodles are very smart, obedient, and graceful, which makes them one of the most popular pets in the world. The Toy Poodle is bouncy, alert, and usually eager to play. Toy Poodles are more energetic than Standard Poodles, and more likely to bark. In 18th and 19th century Europe, the Poodle served a wide variety of purposes, including duck hunting, guiding, and later circus performing, from whence the modern grooming style likely arose. The Poodle became a popular pet for the French aristocracy, and in time was officially adopted as the national dog. Poodles were imported to America in the 20th century. The origins of the poodles are still discussed with a dispute over whether the poodle descends from the old French Barbet breed or from Germany as a type of water dog. Giving your dog time and attention, making sure they have plenty of toys and opportunities to run around and play outside, and working on training regularly are all things that you can do to keep your dog entertained each day. It is a good idea to plan ahead and consider starting a savings account, where you can put away a portion of your paycheck so you can pay for unexpected vet costs. Your dog might end up damaging something in your household as they learn obedience training, so you may incur extra costs unexpectedly for this reason. These are just more reasons to consider maintaining a savings account for your dog. Owning a Toy Poodle on a Budget If you can find a Toy Poodle for free or at a rescue center, utilize state-funded service programs like those for spaying and neutering , and if you opt for less expensive commercial food, you can take care of a Toy Poodle on a budget. However, costs should never be cut when it comes to checkups, vaccinations, illness treatment, and items for nutrition and comfort. Learn how to potty and obedience train your dog yourself instead of hiring a professional trainer. You can find training books at the library and training videos online for guidance. Instead of utilizing a grooming service, buy clippers and a good brush, and do the grooming yourself. Instead of buying expensive toys, make them out of old clothes and unbreakable objects that you find around the house. Go on long walks rather than gas-guzzling drives. Spend time at the dog park instead of using electricity at home watching television. Make your own doggy treats utilizing food in your kitchen instead of buying commercial ones. Daily exercise, a proper diet, and plenty of attention will go a long way. Regular checkups can help catch problems before they become too expensive to address. Conclusion Toy Poodles are adorable little dogs that deserve plenty of love and attention throughout their lives. There are silver labs, but silver is not an acceptable color in the breed standard as this color is believed to have come from a cross with the Weimaraner. However, dogs with this coat color may still be registered with certain kennel clubs. If the dog is a yellow or black lab, check that the puppy has brown eyes. In the case of chocolate labs, check for brown or hazel eyes. Check to see how long its legs are; while a Labrador should have longer legs than a Dachshund, its legs should be shorter than a Husky. Purchase a dog genetics test, which will give you a specialized testing kit. Some DNA tests will look for genetic markers, while cheaper tests focus more on the different breeds. Tip: Try to keep the puppy from sharing food or playing rough with the other dogs, as this might hurt the integrity of the saliva sample. Package the saliva sample according to the instructions given by the company. Seal the envelope or package carefully, so the sample is completely secure while it travels to the lab. Generally, you can find the test results listed by breed, followed by a percentage; however, this might differ, depending on the company. If this is possible, use a cotton swab to collect saliva samples from 1 or both parents. Store these samples carefully, so you can send them to a professional company. Seal the envelope or package carefully to secure the sample, and keep it safe in transit. They are almost square in appearance, with a strong body and sturdy legs. The maximum height for a male is 24 inches, which puts them in the medium-size dog category, but their sturdy build can make them seem much larger. Weights range from 85 pounds for a large male to 55 pounds for a smaller female. Field line bred dogs are often taller and somewhat thinner in build. Labrador retrievers are easily recognized by their broad head, drop ears and large, expressive eyes. Two trademarks of the Lab are the thick but fairly short double coat, which is very water repellent, and the well known "otter tail. The feet are described as "webbed," with longer skin between the toes to aid in swimming. The Labrador retriever is a moderately fast maturing breed, reaching adult height from six to 12 months, but possibly still filling out up to 2 years of age. Many Labs reach 12 to 14 years of age. Personality: In general, Labrador retrievers are excellent family dogs, as long as you keep in mind their need for exercise and training. These are dogs bred to work and work hard and they love to have jobs to do, particularly retrieving. Labs are usually good with other dogs, other pets, and children as long as training has toned down their natural exuberance. They are strong dogs and need some obedience training at an early age or they can be seen dragging their owners down the street at will. Owing to their energetic nature, Labradors who are left alone or not well exercised can become destructive — chewing, digging and barking to excess. The field line dogs are especially high-energy dogs, while some of the show line dogs become perfect couch potatoes at an early age. Chewing can be a problem because the strong retrieve urge gives them an oral fixation. Sturdy chew toys, exercise and training all help with this. Living With: Obviously, Labradors have a number of endearing traits or they would not be so popular. They are intelligent and fairly easy to train, partly from their desire to work with people. They are "easy keepers" and can become overweight if they are not exercised and food portions adjusted as needed. Labs are excellent family dogs because they do want to be with people and many do not do well as kennel dogs. Labradors do tend to be protective of their families and homes but are usually happy to greet company, too. With the strong retrieving instinct, they can develop into destructive chewers if not given appropriate toys and guidance. Labs may tend to "mouth" people and the solution is often simply to give them a toy to carry around, so their mouths are already full! These are very strong dogs and early training is necessary to have a dog that walks nicely on lead. The wonderful double coat that keeps the Labrador warm while retrieving in icy water also gives this breed top billing as shedders. Normally, their coats do fine with a quick weekly grooming, but at shedding time daily grooming is needed. The amount of exercise they need varies with the different lines: field line dogs can run all day, whereas show line dogs only need moderate exercise. History: Early in the s, some of the multipurpose dogs used in North America mostly Canada by hunters were shipped back to England. Many of these "water dogs" were of the Newfoundland type, but the smaller ones were often designated "St John's" dogs. In England, the breed was developed and refined probably with some flat-coated retriever input into the breed we recognize today. As is evidenced by their name, Labrador retrievers were bred and selected for their outstanding retrieving abilities, particularly in water. They have worked as partners with duck hunters in all kinds of weather and conditions. Their intelligence and desire to work as a partner with man has led to many other jobs, and to their current status as popular pets. Today, Labradors excel as service and guide dogs, family pets, scenting dogs for the military, customs and arson task force dogs, search and rescue dogs as well as hunting companions and performance dogs. The breed's good nature has propelled it to the number one ranking in popularity in America, a position it intends to keep. Despite their fame as indoor pets, they are even more at home outdoors. It should always be remembered that Labradors are water retrievers at heart and from early on, puppies show a strong desire to carry things around with them and a strong attraction to water, even puddles! You must be chuffed. Take a look at these first few articles. All the ingredients you need for a happy home. But for now, beside your bed is the best place for your puppy to sleep — it will help them feel safe. Puppies like their crates rather cave-like; we suggest covering it with a blanket to block out light, but keep the front open so that they can see outwards. Make sure to make it snug inside with something like a vet bed or a blanket, or why not take it up a notch with a heat pad or hot water bottle to recreate the feeling of their mother. Nothing feels more comforting than that. Before you head to bed, take your puppy out for one last round of loo-going. Set your bedtime at a later time too — midnight sounds about right. Come back calmly, and place your puppy in the crate and turn out the light. Stuff you should know about Sleep Training your Labrador Your puppy will wake up several times in the night and will need the bathroom at least once! Be prepared for not-so-deep sleeps and tired mornings — just for the first few weeks. Having them sleep next to you is only temporary. Consistency is key! As for you, full nights of sleep will start getting closer and closer. Alone Training How can I teach my Labrador puppy to be ok on their own? Start by feeding your puppy in their crate during meal times. If they seem worried by you leaving, stay in view, and just pop right outside their confinement area. Keep it short and sweet: No need to stay away for long, 60 seconds tops will do for now. Repeat: Do this at least once a day to make progress go steady and smoothly. Socialization Exercises To Do this week Letting your Labrador puppy explore the yard Besides the gnomes and questionable yard furniture you may have, letting your puppy explore your own yard is a great and safe way to start showing them the sounds, lights and wonders of the outside world. Exploring different surfaces exercise Make sure that the surfaces you use are safe — nothing too crazy just yet. Gather surfaces such as An oven tray with a small layer of water A piece of astro turf A carpet tile A large piece of tin foil, cardboard or something crinkly PRO TIP: Set up for this exercise in the room your puppy spends most of their time in — it will help them to feel safe and confident. Pop the surfaces out safely on the floor and allow your puppy to investigate them. Nobody has ever enjoyed walking on those. Remember to be patient! Lucky for you — teaching them their name is easy peasy. Say their name in a happy jolly tone and reward with a treat. Repeat five times, 5 and take a break. Practice this 2 or 3 times a day so they get the hang of it. Teach your puppy to sit Teaching your puppy how to sit is a popular one. The first two are far more common though. Keep using this word when they do the right thing, and then follow it up with a food reward. In puppy logic, stinky means yummy. How to do it Start at home; where there are no distractions. Just make sure to shut off Gogglebox in the background. Recall — How to teach our Labrador puppy to come back when called Your puppy already knows their name at this point, so this should be a walk in the park. How to do it Treats and a cheerful voice will be what works here. Do these exercises before meal times so your puppy is more motivated. Practice this 5 times a day and in 3 different places in your house and yard to get them used to coming to you in all settings. How to do it Show your puppy that you have their favorite toy, and start to get them excited about it. When they show interest, throw it a little bit away from you. They will likely follow it and pick it up. If they do, encourage them back to you with your voice, so remember to sound happy! Swap the toy for a treat or another toy and do the process again. Repeat this about 5 times. Instead create more distance and excitement sounds to get them to come to you — spaniels like to show off, so they will likely want to parade what they have! Always swap the toy for something when they have it, this could be a treat or another toy. Resource guarding occurs when we force puppies to give up items or snatch things out of their mouths. For breeds like Labradors who are designed to want to hold things in their mouths, this is pretty important! Resource guarding is when a dog protects a resource from being taken by someone else — dog or human. For some reason, there is a solid list of things puppies find irresistible: Socks. Print We recently brought home Bubba, a female chocolate lab puppy. Bubba is already sold as one of our Custom Trained Retrievers, so it is our responsibility to train her and raise her until she has progressed to the level of training the owner has requested. That means Bubba will be with for almost a year and a half. We train one or two of these puppies each year, and over the years we have gotten pretty good at it. We also train adult dogs for hunting and competition, so we see a lot of dogs come into our program. Dogs that have each been raised differently. There are some definite training tips that can help you help your lab grow up to be the best version of himself. Training and socialization for very young Labrador puppies — week one The first week of a puppy being away from its litter is very stressful for the puppy. Most often, the first two days, the puppy will sleep a lot! The pup is adjusting to all the changes, and they need time to do that. After the first couple days you may notice a spike of energy. This is your sign that the puppy is adjusting well and is ready to be exposed to a few more things. Labrador puppy training that first week home Here are the things we work on during week one. A nylon adjustable one is usually best since puppies grow quickly. It often takes the puppy a few days to adjust to having a collar on. Intro crate We introduce our puppies to a crate on day one. Literally the day we bring them home. Most puppies will cry, bark or howl while in the crate the first few or many times. Ignore it, it does not hurt the puppy at all. Always wait until the puppy settles down and is quiet, even if that quiet only lasts for just a minute or two. Learn more about crate training. Intro to housebreaking Another day one lesson and one that will last for a few weeks or months. We introduce housebreaking day one by allowing the puppy to run around an enclosed area under close supervision. If your puppy then goes potty outside, great! The thing to remember about housebreaking, is that your puppy should never be allowed to roam the house or a room without supervision. The only way to housebreak a dog is for them to get caught in the middle of an accident. That is how they learn that what they are doing is not right. Learn more about housebreaking. Intro leash We introduce a leash to our puppies around day three of being home. But once they start getting more energy and get more inquisitive, we use a Flexi-lead attached to the nylon collar to take the puppy outside. This accomplishes two goals. The gentle tugs on the leash and pressure when the puppy strains against the leash are great training for handling pressure as they get older. Intro to pressure and correction The last thing we introduce to our new puppy during the first week home is pressure and correction. This is an often-missing element to training that can severely handicap a dog that you want to be a hunting companion or competition dog. The kind of pressure I am talking about is very mild such as saying NO to the puppy when they are chewing up your shoes or scratching through the carpet. This is the way mama dogs carry their puppies and it does not hurt them at all. This does not hurt the puppy; it is exactly what a mama dog does to teach her puppies. Learn more about introducing pressure and correction. Commands to start using that first week home The first week there are some commands we start using so that the puppy will associate the words we use with actions. Puppies play and explore with their mouths, and often they will think it is great fun to bite your hands and feet. If this does not curb the behavior, I grab her lower jaw, wrapping her gums around her teeth and squeeze. I have found this to be very effective, especially if you start this the first week you have the puppy home. The longer you wait to start, the harder it becomes to stop this behavior. It takes very little pressure to stop a 7-week-old puppy from biting. Learn more about how to stop your Lab puppy from biting you. Off command The OFF command is also started day one. The OFF command is used to stop a puppy or dog from jumping on you. It can also be used to keep a dog off a sofa or other furniture. Starting day one, I gently use my knee to push down the puppy each time they jump on me. I say OFF when I do this. Usually, a gentle push with the knee is all it takes with a very small puppy. They learn this command very quickly. If your puppy is a bit more energetic or stubborn and tries to jump on you despite your gentle pushes, then you may need to use a little more force. Even if you were to knock your puppy backwards onto her back, that is not going to hurt her seriously. But it will likely make a good impression and cause her to think twice before jumping on you again. With jumping, consistency is important. You must knock your puppy off every time she jumps on you. Learn more about how to stop your Lab from jumping on you. We use this as a que when we are taking the puppy outside to go potty. We use this while the puppy is on a leash, and we are pulling them toward us. I only use this command for very young dogs. Your goal is to get the puppy to rest in your arms and not move. But if you keep at it, you will see your dog settle for longer and longer periods of time. Introduction to retrieving Lastly, since all our puppies are retrievers, we start introducing the puppy to retrieving. The first few times are simply throwing a toy a few feet and if the puppy runs out and gets it and comes back to you, great. Then take the item and throw it again. If the puppy does not come back or does not even run out to get the item, then stop for the day. Just let the retrieving develop naturally. Next week we will start more formal retrieving training. Final thoughts on what you should do that first week with your new Labrador puppy As you can see, there is a lot of training that you can do with your seven- or eight-week-old puppy. And while you can wait for training, your puppy is ready and able to learn quickly right now. I will be posting weekly on the training we are doing with Bubba, so you can get a week-by-week snapshot of how we raise and train a puppy up to be a excellent, responsive hunting or competition dog as well as a well-mannered family dog. If you are struggling or need additional help with your new puppy, you can email me ottertailkennels gmail. I would be happy to discuss your goals for your retriever and tell you about the programs I offer. Until next time, happy retrieving. Dog domestic dog The Labrador Retriever, or simply Labrador, is a British breed of retriever gun dog. It was developed in the United Kingdom from fishing dogs imported from the colony of Newfoundland now a province of Canada , and was named after the Labrador region of that colony. It is among the most commonly kept dogs in several countries, particularly in the European world. The Labrador is friendly, energetic, and playful. It may also be trained as a guide or assistance dog , or for rescue or therapy work. Another early advocate of these Newfoundland fishing dogs was the 2nd Earl of Malmesbury , who bred them for their expertise in waterfowling. The dogs Buccleuch Avon and Buccleuch Ned, given by Malmesbury to Buccleuch, were mated with bitches carrying blood from those originally imported by the 5th Duke and the 10th Earl of Home. The offspring are the ancestors of all modern Labradors. John's water dogs bred by European settlers in Newfoundland were first introduced to Britain from ships trading between Canada and Poole in Dorset. These were then bred with British hunting dogs to create what became known as the Labrador Retriever. Early writers have confused the Labrador with the much larger Newfoundland and the Lesser Newfoundland , with Charles St. John even referring to the Lesser Newfoundland as the Newfoundland. Colonel Peter Hawker describes the first Labrador as being not larger than an English Pointer , more often black than other colours, long in its head and nose with a deep chest, fine legs, and short and smooth coat, and did not carry its tail as highly as the Newfoundland. John's breed of these dogs [6] [7] in the fifth edition of his book Introductions to Young Sportsman, published in .Black Chocolate There is a great deal of variety among Labradors. The following characteristics are typical of the conformation show bred bench-bred lines of this breed in the United States and are based on the American Kennel Club standard. Size: Labradors are a medium-large breed. They should be as long from the withers to the base of the tail as they are from the floor to the withers. The AKC standard includes an ideal weight for dogs of 25—36 kg 55—80 lb and for bitches as 25—32 kg 55—70 lb. The coat is water-resistant, so the dog does not get cold when taking to the water in the winter. That means that the dog naturally has a slightly dry, oily coat. Acceptable colours are black, yellow, and chocolate. The eyes should be kind and expressive. Appropriate eye colours are brown and hazel. The lining around the eyes should be black. The ears should hang close to the head and be set slightly above the eyes. Jaws: The jaws should be strong and powerful. The muzzle should be of medium length and should not be too tapered. Show and field lines[ edit ] Head and muzzle appearance: field left , and show right , showing the shorter muzzle length, more solid appearance head, and "pronounced" stop of the latter As a result of specialised breeding, there are significant differences between field and trial-bred and show-bred lines of Labradors. In the United States, the former are sometimes mistakenly referred to as "American" and the latter as "English", in fact, both field and show types are bred in both countries and all Labrador Retrievers are descended from British lines. Sometimes, a runny nose is a symptom of an easy to treat issue such as seasonal allergies. They range from mild irritants, like seasonal allergies, to serious issues. Here are the most common reasons dogs get a runny nose. Seasonal Allergies Dogs may develop a runny nose due to seasonal allergies or food allergies. Symptoms of allergic rhinitis in dogs include things like clear discharge from the nose, watery eyes, sneezing, reverse sneezing, constant scratching, and itching. Dogs may suffer from allergies year-round or only seasonally depending on the irritant. Biology Some dog breeds suffer from a runny nose simply because of their genetics. Flat-faced dog breeds can have trouble breathing due to the shape of their airways. Dogs like boxers and pugs may suffer from a runny nose when the cartilage in their nasal passage becomes weak. Surgery is the best way to fix these problems, though many dogs live for years with a mild runny nose without any more significant problems. Foreign Bodies A dog runny nose can be caused by foreign objects that obstruct the nasal passages. Common obstructions include things like foxtails and grass awns. Symptoms that accompany a foreign object obstruction include sneezing, pawing at the nose, and nose bleeds. Infections Dogs can get a variety of infections including bacterial, fungal, and viral infections as well as nasal mites. Many of these cause a runny nose along with other symptoms, including bad odor, bloody nose, coughing, and choking on mucus. Infections should be diagnosed and treated by a veterinarian. While some are mild and easy to deal with, others may cause complications. Other serious conditions require a veterinarian. In general, if your dog has a mild runny nose with clear nasal discharge, you can treat symptoms at home. Take walks midday to avoid high pollen counts in the mornings and evenings. If your dog is allergic to grass, walk on dirt or paved paths, head to the beach, and avoid the dog park. If your dog is allergic to dust or grass, you can also opt to run and play on artificial turf fields. You can also give your dog an antihistamine or an allergy relief chew to help. Immune support chews can also help support a healthy immune system and help with seasonal allergies. For dogs who suffer from food allergies, try a limited ingredient diet LID. These diets remove the most common food allergens, including chicken, beef, and dairy. You can slowly reintroduce foods one at a time to see which ingredients are the culprits. Avoid brands that claim to sell hypoallergenic dog foods. Dogs, like humans, can theoretically be allergic to anything so there is no truly hypoallergenic food. If your dog has a runny nose from a foreign object, try to remove the object using small pliers or tweezers. If you are positive that you removed the entire obstruction, monitor your dog. You'll only need to visit the vet if other symptoms develop. Keep your dog comfortable and try to reduce anxiety with tasty chews and their favorite toys. In a few days or weeks, they should be back to normal. Just follow up with your vet if you have any questions. Knowing when to go to the vet and when to treat at home can make all the difference. Now that you understand what to watch out for, you can make an informed decision the next time your pup has a runny nose. Other Posts You Might Like. Common bacterial causes of CIRDC include: Bordetella bronchiseptica Streptococcus equi subspecies zooepidemicus Mycoplasma spp CIRDC is spread through direct contact and is typically diagnosed by veterinarians after a dog's owner notices abrupt coughing, sneezing, or nasal discharge. These symptoms often occur after a number of animals have shared a common space, like a pet care facility, for example. Treatment is determined by the severity of the disease i. Antibiotics may be prescribed in some cases. The irritation they cause to nasal passages can cause runny noses in dogs. These mites can affect all kinds of dogs, regardless of breed, sex, or age. Apart from nasal discharge, other symptoms of nasal mites include nosebleeds, sneezing, impaired smell, itchiness around the face, labored or noisy breathing, and head shaking. Nasal aspergillosis in particular is a fungal infection that affects many animals, both domestic and wild. There are several species of Aspergillus known to trigger respiratory infections in animals. Oftentimes, the infection will be localized in the nasal cavity or sinuses of a dog, but in rare cases it may spread to the eyes and skull. Treatment of nasal aspergillosis typically involves the prescription of antifungal medication, which is administered either orally or nasally. Dogs have a magnificent sense of smell and regularly put their nose to work in exploring the world around them. This, in turn, can lead to nasal discharge in dogs, as well as general irritation and nosebleeds. If left untreated, the foreign object could lead to infection or worse. Nasal cancer A runny nose in a dog is one symptom of a nasal tumor. Other symptoms include nosebleeds, facial deformities, and neurologic abnormalities. To diagnose a nasal tumor, your vet may first order a CT scan to understand the scope of the condition. From there, they may conduct a tissue biopsy and extract tissue from around the nasal area. If nasal cancer is diagnosed, there are a few treatments that can be attempted. Definitive radiation therapy, stereotactic radiosurgery, and stereotactic radiation therapy SRT may be employed to fight cancer. However, if the cancer has spread into the bones, life-saving treatment may not be possible. Instead of sweating throughout their body, dogs sweat on the pads of their feet and, sometimes, through their noses. Promptly reporting symptoms will help your vet determine an accurate diagnosis. An early diagnosis also means that treatment can start sooner, which enables your pup to get quick relief. At this point, your vet may order a range of tests to help facilitate an accurate diagnosis. For instance, a rhinoscopy, x-rays, or other lab work may be ordered to dig deeper and discover the root of the issue. Below, we explain some of the available treatment methods for the causes described earlier in the article. An allergy test or elimination diet trial may help to shed some light on the allergen affecting your dog. Infections In the case of infections, antibiotics are often needed to combat harmful bacteria. This object may not only be the reason your dog has a runny nose, but also can serve as a source of pain and irritation. Nasal cancer As we mentioned above, treatments such as radiation therapy, stereotactic radiosurgery, and stereotactic radiation therapy SRT can be effective in battling nasal cancer in dogs. However, once cancer spreads to crucial areas such as the bones, little can be done to treat it. If the nasal discharge is clear, it may be a sign of a seasonal allergy or a reaction to the heat. However, if nasal discharge is discolored, bloody, or has pus in it, you should take your dog to the vet. When in doubt, schedule a consultation with your vet. What can you give a dog for a runny nose? If allergies are at fault, then allergy medicine may help soothe symptoms. If an infection is the root cause, then antibiotics may prove effective. In any case, always talk to your vet before administering medication to your dog. Final Notes A sense of smell is central to a dog—it allows them to perceive the world around them and better understand their environment. Beyond that, you may be worried that a runny nose is a sign of a more serious underlying health condition in your dog. While some serious ailments such as cancer are associated with runny noses in dogs, other causes tend to be more mild. If your dog has a runny nose, you should seek treatment as soon as possible. Published on Nov 12, and updated at Apr 04, .Runny noses and sneezes abound for us humans, as new plants bloom in the fall. But did you know that your dog can have a runny nose too? Dog runny noses are more correctly called nasal discharge. It can run the gamut from clear and watery to thick and purulent. The appearance and frequency of nasal discharge in dogs can tell you much about the underlying cause. Could My Dog Have Allergies? In Short, Yes. A thin, watery discharge without color or odor is likely a sign of mild irritation in the nasal cavities. This can occur with seasonal allergies or other causes of inflammation within the nose such as an inhaled foreign object grass and seeds. In some cases, antihistamines will clear up the discharge without further incident. Dogs do sometimes respond to environmental allergens just as humans do—with red, watery eyes, sneezing, and a runny nose. More Serious Causes of Dog Runny Noses In cases where the discharge is thick, has odor, or discoloration with blood or pus, more serious causes are suspected. Any exposure to dogs otherwise? If both nostrils are involved, the causes are frequently different than if only one nostril. Both nostrils points to a more generalized cause while one nostril points to a localized source. If the discharge is clear, thin, and watery, your veterinarian may try antihistamines and monitoring at home for any other signs. If none develop, and your dog seems otherwise healthy, it may be normal for a small amount of discharge to occur. No further treatment may be needed. If the discharge continues or worsens, then more diagnostics are needed. In the case of unilateral discharge one nostril involved , the causes could include an inhaled foreign body such as grass or grass awns leading to rhinitis, a fungal infection, or a nasal tumor. Your veterinarian will likely try a course of antibiotics. If no response occurs, then the next step is generally a rhinoscopy. In this procedure, your dog will be anesthetized, a camera will be inserted into the nostril to look at the area, and samples will be taken for culture and biopsy. In some cases, a CT scan of the head is needed to make a definitive diagnosis. If both nostrils are involved, this points to a more generalized problem such as a viral or bacterial infection. Dogs are prone to both especially if they board at a kennel, visit the dog park, or go to grooming facilities. Canine influenza is becoming more common in the dog population. In this case, concurrent with the runny nose would be a fever, sneezing and coughing, lethargy, and often lack of appetite. Pneumonia is a possible side effect. Canine kennel cough , a common bacterial complex, can also cause a nasal discharge. This generally occurs when the disease progresses to pneumonia. Summary In the case of a dog with no other symptoms and some clear nasal discharge, a runny nose is not cause for immediate concern. It is when your pet develops other symptoms such as red, watery eyes, sneezing, coughing, fever, lack of appetite, or lethargy that a trip to the veterinarian is warranted. Sweating and allergies are the most common triggers — More severe reasons your dog could be experiencing a runny nose include injuries, nasal tumors, and periodontal disease. Humans are all too familiar with runny noses. But when it comes to our dogs, the underlying reason for a nasal discharge may not always be as clear. Go to source compared to the roughly 6 million in us, the possibilities can seem endless! These could include coughing, nasal congestion , lethargy , or appetite changes. Owners should also be on the lookout for nose discoloration paler than normal , excessive dryness, or texture changes. What color is your pup's snot? Here are root causes in order of least to most severe, and what you could do about each one. Instead of secreting sweat through their pores, they do it through their paw pads and noses. In the case of the latter, this sweating will present itself in the form of clear, odorless water in the nasal passage. Other irritants that may trigger canine allergies include certain foods, prescription drugs, and dust mites. If your dog is experiencing allergies, their runny nose may sometimes be paired with other symptoms such as sneezing , itchiness , coughing , and eye discharge. Avoid allergy triggers The fastest and easiest way to avoid seasonal allergies in dogs is to steer clear of irritants that cause these symptoms whenever possible. Cigarette smoke, cleaning products, dust build up, and lit candles and incense are all possible irritants once inhaled indoors or outdoors. While these reactions can be seasonal, they can also be long-term if caused by a permanent element of your home or regular environment for your canine companion. Limit exposure The best way to treat environmental irritants is to separate or remove such triggers. Owners should always consult their vet to determine the right dosage for their respective pet. Genetics Some dog breeds are more genetically predisposed to runny noses than others. These dogs tend to experience more extreme sensitivities to seasonal changes than other breeds, including respiratory issues and heat intolerance. Owners can also be mindful of overexertion during humid summer days and chilly winter days, when dogs genetically prone to runny noses may experience the most irritation. Once stuck in the upper airways, they can cause runny noses, excessive sneezing, and nosebleeds. Additionally, if your dog is frequently pawing at their nostrils, they may have inhaled a foreign object. Extract the object immediately Owners should seek veterinary care to have the object removed. That said, if you can see the object in their nose and feel comfortable trying to remove it yourself, make sure to use a clean pair of tweezers or small pliers, and plan a follow-up vet appointment to ensure your pup is okay. Bacterial infections Bacterial infections impact humans and their furry friends alike. They are often the result of a weakened immune system brought on from diet, lack of exercise, aging, or other illnesses. Owners who believe their pup has been infected should consult their vet ASAP before things get worse. Commonly known as kennel cough, this condition is easily preventable with a yearly vaccine that all owners should make sure their dog is up-to-date on. Medication may be prescribed to speed up recovery, along with an additional antibiotic post-treatment to reduce the risk of a secondary infection. Periodontal disease causes a significant amount of bacteria buildup in the mouth and gums, leading to gingivitis , gum recession, and tooth root abscesses that can cause unilateral nasal discharge. If you suspect your dog has contracted a virus, seek medical attention immediately before it gets worse. In the case of dogs, their runny nose may be accompanied by watery eyes, congestion, and frequent sneezing in the event of a cold. Canine influenza — The dog flu is an airborne virus typically contracted from being around infected dogs. Discolored eye and nasal discharge, fever , difficulty breathing , and lethargy are all symptoms your dog may exhibit. Although there is no specific treatment for canine influenza, your vet may recommend certain antibiotics and steroids to boost their immune system as they recover. Distemper — Canine distemper is a highly contagious viral disease that your dog can contract not only through other dogs, but through wild animals like racoons and foxes. It affects the respiratory, GI, and central nervous systems of infected dogs, and can cause sticky, yellow nasal discharge, eye discharge, decreased appetite, vomiting, seizures, and even death. Treatment is usually supportive care while hoping the dog can mount an appropriate immune response to fight the virus. Lethargy, confusion or disorientation, or swelling of the nose are all signs your dog has experienced an injury of some kind and should be brought to their vet for further evaluation. If they begin vomiting or have different pupil sizes, seek emergency care, as they may have a concussion. Consult your vet Your vet is the person most equipped to determine whether or not your dog is experiencing an injury and the severity of it. While polyps are benign, nasal tumors can sometimes be cancerous. To diagnose a mass, a dog will typically need to be anesthetized while a physical exam of the nasal cavity is performed. Surgically remove the mass If your dog has a polyp benign tumor, routine surgery can be administered to safely remove it from their nasal passage. An oronasal fistula, on the other hand, usually happens due to oral infections or the loss of a tooth. Surgical closure The only effective way to treat clefts and oronasal fistulas is through surgery. For puppies, a feeding tube may be implemented to allow the opening to grow smaller. Nasal exam. Your vet will first perform an exam to look at the entrance of both nostrils for sores, foreign bodies, or masses. In the event that a mass or foreign body is suspected deeper in the nasal cavity, a rhinoscopy performed by a specialist may be recommended. This involves general anesthesia and passing a small camera up into the nostril to look for a foreign body or nasal mass. Tick and clotting panels. If your pup is experiencing a nosebleed epistaxis , your vet may also recommend a tick or clotting panel to determine the cause. Upper respiratory exam. If no nasal abnormalities are found, upper respiratory panels can be performed if an infection is suspected. Oral exam. An oral exam may also be needed to diagnose any underlying dental disease or oronasal fistulas, as well as periodontal disease. Making sure you take the safest measures to prevent further illness will be key when treating your dog yourself. Crank up the humidity for congestion — Humidifiers are a great way to break up nasal congestion when our favorite furballs are sick. Encourage lots of rest — There will be plenty of time for play and exercise when your dog is feeling better. Use soft washcloths or warm compresses — Key word: soft! Preventing a runny nose No one wants to see their canine companion uncomfortable. Taking steps to prevent a drippy nose will keep your pup happy and looking spiffy. Stay up to date on shots — Making sure your dog is caught up on their vaccinations is the most effective way to rule out preventable infections and diseases like Bordetella and distemper. Fluids and diet are key — Just like with humans, keeping your doggy well-fed and well-hydrated is crucial for a healthy immune system. Talk to your vet about a nutrition plan and keep an eye on the water bowl to make sure your little one always has something to drink. Kick irritants to the curb — If you know your dog has specific allergy triggers like incense or cigarette smoke, avoid exposing them to these irritants as much as possible so they have a comfortable home environment. If your dog has clear nasal discharge, it is likely nothing to worry about and will go away on its own. If the runny nose is accompanied by other symptoms like difficulty breathing or coughing, or if the discharge is discolored, consult your vet. Air humidifiers, plenty of rest, and soft compressions can aid a dog with the sniffles in getting back to normal. If their runny nose persists, seek veterinary care. Can I give my dog Benadryl? Yes, it is safe to give your dog Benadryl to treat allergy-induced runny nose. Be sure to consult your vet on the right dosage for your respective pup.

Most people do not buy the largest dog beds for their dogs because they believe that larger ones are always better. However, an outdoor bed is made larger for larger pets, and it will also have additional features such as padding and additional support for your dog. To ensure that you get the right size, you should measure your pet in advance. Once you know the exact size, you will be purchasing, and you can then go online and compare the various styles and prices. One type of bed that you may find is a memory foam pet bed. When looking for the best golden retriever puppies for sale, there are many things to consider. Before the purchase is made, many things should be taken into consideration, including the breeders, the dog themselves, the supplies needed, and the cost. Some things to consider when deciding on what to buy for a Golden Retriever puppy include the cost and the breeder or breeders reputation. This is especially important because there are reputable breeders and less so reputable breeders, which can lead to problems down the road, such as the death or illness of the puppy. The breeders in the know of the breed will have a lot of experience, but they will also be able to provide you with references of dogs that they have bred successfully in the past. It is advisable to avoid breeders who do not have much experience breeding golden and only have a few dogs available for sale. The Internet is a great resource for locating reputable breeders but be aware that some are only in it to make a quick buck. Beware of those that say they have puppies available for sale if they do not have any dogs of that particular breed and only have pictures to show you. Be sure that the breeder you are considering has had previous experience with breeding Golden Retrievers because not all breeders have. A reputable breeder will always have at least a couple of dogs available for sale, and they will have been in business for quite some time. Ask around for referrals, or even better, look up the Internet to see what other people have to say about the breeder. It is important to be comfortable with the person you will be buying from because, in the end, your puppy will be dependent on them. Another important thing to consider when buying a Golden Retriever puppy is what type of schedule and environment to raise your new puppy in. Golden Retrievers love routine, so you must establish a routine for when they will be taken out to go potty. Once you and your puppy are sure that both of you are on the same page as far as when the new puppy will go to the bathroom, you are good to go. Once your puppy is used to going to the bathroom at a specific time every day, potty training should be a breeze. One last thing to keep in mind when raising Golden Retrievers is that Golden Retrievers are very intelligent and curious dogs. New Golden Retriever puppy owners can expect their dogs to be very curious about their surroundings and figure out what everyone is doing. This can be an exciting time but also a time where they might get a little rowdy. As you can see, raising Golden Retrievers is not hard at all. They are very intelligent dogs and will do very well in a home with a caring and supportive family. If you are a new Golden Retriever puppy owner, you should know that you will be expected to put in some time and effort. Most puppies do well in a home with other pets and children, so make sure you have this in place before buying your dog. Most puppy parents will go over any training issues raised with their dogs, so make sure you discuss these with your vet or breeder before the puppies are shipped. How to pick a golden retriever puppy from a litter? A quality way to view how your future puppy will turn out is to check out his current parents. If he has siblings, you can ask their opinions on what kind of dog they would be comfortable with living with you and if they would consider purchasing another pup from the litter. Golden retrievers are extremely popular today, so it should be easy to find reputable breeders who are responsible, respectful, and loving. The Internet is a valuable resource when researching where to purchase your puppy; a reputable breeder will typically have a web page that contains up-to-date information about their stock. They usually have a frequently asked questions page as well so that potential clients can get an answer to common questions. If a puppy mill is mentioned in the topic sentence, this is a major warning sign because many puppy mills are terrible. Ask how old the mother was when she gave birth. She should tell you how many puppies she had in her litter because her litter size and how old the puppies do not always match. Be careful if you choose a breeder who tells you she has six puppies in her litter because no reputable breeder would ever have that many puppies in her litter. Be sure that the breeder is knowledgeable and willing to talk with you. How to pick a gold retriever puppy from a healthy litter is another important factor. Ask the breeder to give references of previous buyers of the litter you are considering. Ideally, these former owners can provide firsthand feedback on the good and the bad qualities of the dogs they brought into the household. A reputable breeder is also likely to be happy to show you the pups during a show, should they be available. Choosing how to pick golden retriever puppies from a healthy litter is an important decision that should not be taken lightly. The best choice is always the one that offers the most comfort and assurance about future health for your pup. If possible, take the time to meet the new puppy and get some advice from the breeder before making your final decision. Essential products list for your Pet Post navigation.

This immune response is found to be effective in protecting the individual against the virus that was injected or introduced into the body. Dog vaccinations involve the injection of antigens instead of the actual viruses. Once the antigen enters the body, the immune system becomes mildly-stimulated and familiar of the virus. So when your Bulldog is exposed to the same virus, the immune system can easily recognize it and know how to fight it off — reducing the effects and severity of the disease the virus could have caused. Bulldog puppy vaccination: Core vaccines There are a number of vaccinations the veterinarian may recommend for your Bulldog. Dog vaccinations are classified into three types — core vaccines, non-core vaccines, and vaccines that are not really recommended. Core vaccines are those that your Bulldog really needs and are vital considering the risk of exposure, severity, and the possibility of virus transmission to humans. Canine parvovirus Parvo is a well-known puppy killer. It mostly affects puppies less than one year old. The disease is caused by the canine parvovirus that mainly targets the gastrointestinal tract. Signs of this disease include bloody diarrhea, loss of appetite, and vomiting. This disease is prevalent all over the world and can kill an infected puppy in just 72 hours. Canine distemper Canine distemper is one of the most devastating diseases a dog can suffer from. Respiratory infections, eye discharge, hardening of footpads, and seizures are important indications. This disease is very contagious and can easily kill unvaccinated puppies and adult dogs. Canine hepatitis The canine adenovirus type-1 CAV-1 causes canine hepatitis, which causes liver problems. Symptoms of the disease vary but may include fever, abdominal pain, lethargy, jaundice, and appetite loss. The disease has no direct cure and is only treated with supportive care. Canine hepatitis can kill the infected dog even before any symptoms are visible. Rabies In most countries, owners are mandated by the law to have their dogs vaccinated against rabies. The virus can be transmitted to other animals or humans through bites. In humans, the immediate administration of post-exposure prophylaxis PEP after a bite is necessary to prevent rabies from developing. Rabies does not have a cure. Infected humans who did not receive the PEP regimen often die. Bulldog puppy vaccination: Non-core and not recommended vaccines There are other dog vaccinations that your puppy needs aside from the core vaccines mentioned above. Non-core vaccinations are advisable for dogs, who live in or travel to areas where the diseases are prevalent. Leptospirosis Leptospirosis is a disease caused by the bacterial genus Leptospira. The disease triggers a wide array of symptoms and can result in liver or kidney failure, respiratory issues, meningitis, or even death. Also known as lepto, this disease is zoonotic, which means an infected dog can transmit the disease to humans. Currently, there are more than serovars subtypes of Leptospira and 20 of them are known to affect dogs. Leptospirosis can only protect your Bulldog against 4 serovars. For this reason, veterinarians only recommend leptospirosis vaccinations for dogs who live and travel to areas where the disease is prevalent. The vaccines are also effective for 4 to 6 months only so lepto vaccines must be given to dogs who live in endemic areas twice a year. Lyme disease Deer ticks can carry Borrelia burgdorferi, the bacterial species that can cause the Lyme disease in dogs. Veterinarians only recommend this vaccine if your Bulldog lives in an area where the disease is endemic. Kennel cough Different viruses can cause kennel cough in dogs. The disease is somewhat similar to colds in humans. Kennel cough vaccines come in three forms — oral, injections, and intranasal. However, kennel cough vaccines can only protect your Bulldog against a few strains of viruses that cause it. For this reason, kennel cough vaccines are only recommended for dogs that are at a greater risk of contracting the disease. If your Bulldog receives professional grooming, goes to boarding facilities, is attending training classes, or participates in activities requiring him to meet other dogs, the vaccine is highly recommended. Canine parainfluenza virus The canine parainfluenza virus is one of the viruses that can cause kennel cough in dogs. Vaccination against this disease is considered a non-core vaccine. Other vaccinations Other dog vaccinations, including the Canine coronavirus vaccine, the porphyromonas vaccine, and the giardia vaccine, are also available in many clinics. However, veterinarians do not recommend them for most dogs. Bulldog puppy vaccination: What are combination vaccines? Dog vaccinations come in combinations. Combination vaccines cover three to seven diseases. The most basic inclusions in Bulldog puppy vaccination are the following diseases. DHPP or 4-in-1 vaccine can protect your Bulldog puppy against canine distemper, canine hepatitis, canine parainfluenza, and canine parvovirus. On the other hand, DHLPP or 5-in-1 vaccine can protect your pet from canine distemper, canine hepatitis, leptospirosis, canine parainfluenza, and canine parvovirus. Bulldog puppy vaccination: When is the best time? This inherited immunity lasts until the puppies are 6 to 8 weeks old. Veterinarians recommend giving puppies their first shot of vaccinations at this age. As the puppies grow older, the antibodies they inherited from their mother wear down. The decline of antibodies makes the puppies susceptible to many deadly diseases, especially canine distemper and canine parvovirus. For this reason, Bulldog puppy vaccination is a must when your pet is around 8 weeks old. Contrary to popular belief, dog vaccinations must not be given to puppies younger than 6 weeks. Puppies younger than that have high levels of maternal antibodies in their system. This means that the vaccines may not do its purpose if it is injected in puppies with high levels of maternal antibodies in their system. Bulldog puppy vaccination: How frequent are vaccines given? Young puppies must be given combination vaccines at least three times. Each shot is spaced with 14 to 19 days intervals. The rabies vaccines can be given to dogs at least 3 months old. The law mandates owners to have their dogs vaccinated against rabies every year. Some countries and states in the United States allow owners to have their dogs vaccinated against rabies every 3 years. Leave a Reply: Leave a comment below and share your thoughts. Travel habits Lifestyle Therefore, it is very important for us to discuss the vaccination protocol that's right for your canine companion at your next appointment. When To Start Puppy Vaccinations In general, a puppy should start vaccines as soon as you get the puppy this is usually between 6 and 8 weeks and then every three weeks until approximately four months of age when it will receive the final round. Generally, if the puppy's mother has a healthy immune system, it will most likely receive antibodies in the mother's milk while nursing. After a puppy has been weaned off of the mother's milk, vaccinations should begin. It is important to stay current with your puppy vaccine schedule. Puppy vaccinations have been medically proven to combat many preventable diseases and illnesses that can occur without proper immunizations. Adhering to a puppy vaccine schedule is synonymous with responsible puppy care. Your puppy deserves every chance to be healthy and happy for life and vaccinations play an important role. Don't run the risk of your puppy contracting one of these terrible diseases, when they are so easily preventable. Consult with the veterinarian at your next appointment. Dog Vaccination Schedule Once your puppy reaches adulthood, and all of the core puppy vaccines have been administered, your veterinarian can begin implementing an adult dog vaccination schedule. When dogs come in for their first one year visit, we recommend boostering their DHPP, Leptospirosis, and Rabies vaccines as well as Canine Influenza and Lyme if the lifestyle of the dog requires these vaccines. If Kennel Cough Bordetella is due at this time, it should also be administered. These vaccines serve to protect your bulldog from a range of potential, severe diseases. This guide is designed to provide you with essential information about English bulldog vaccinations. Vaccination Timeline for Bulldog Puppies Starting from around 6 to 8 weeks of age, English bulldog puppies should receive their first vaccines, including shots for distemper, parvovirus, and canine hepatitis. Boosters are generally administered every 3 to 4 weeks until the puppy reaches about 16 weeks old, ensuring full protection as their immune system develops. The core vaccines for adult dogs typically encompass distemper, parvovirus, and rabies. The latter is usually mandated by law. These include vaccines for Bordetella bronchiseptica kennel cough , Lyme disease, and leptospirosis. Your vet will consider various risk factors, like time spent around other dogs and outdoor activities, to determine if these extra vaccines are recommended. These can range from mild fever and decreased appetite to discomfort at the injection site. Severe reactions, though rare, necessitate immediate veterinary attention. Their eyes are often enchanting, possibly inheriting the vivid blue of a Husky or the warm brown of a Boxer. Their coats are typically dense and can range from short to medium in length, with a variety of colors such as black, brown, brindle, or even white with unique markings. Grooming needs can also differ depending on the coat, but regular brushing and maintenance are essential. A Boxsky's striking appearance is sure to turn heads and make them a standout in any crowd. No one Boxsky looks the same as the parent breeds are so different from each other. The Growth Journey: Sizing Up a Boxsky Boxskies, being mixed breeds, can exhibit a range of sizes, usually falling into the medium to large category. Males typically stand between 22 and 25 inches tall at the shoulder, while females range from 20 to 23 inches. Weight also varies, with males tipping the scales at 45 to 80 pounds and females weighing between 35 and 65 pounds. The final size of a Boxsky depends on their genetic makeup, which may favor one parent breed over the other. A Boxsky's growth rate can be influenced by factors such as diet, exercise, and overall health. To ensure a well-proportioned, healthy dog, it is essential to provide proper nutrition and regular vet checkups throughout their growth. Expecting the Years: Boxsky Life Expectancy A Boxsky's life expectancy typically ranges from 10 to 14 years, a relatively healthy lifespan for a medium to large-sized dog. However, this breed can be prone to certain health issues inherited from their parent breeds, such as hip dysplasia, heart issues, or eye problems. To ensure your Boxsky's long and happy life, it is crucial to provide a well-balanced diet, regular exercise, and routine vet checkups. Additionally, proper training and socialization are essential for a well-rounded, well-behaved Boxsky. By taking a proactive approach to their health and well-being, you can expect to enjoy many wonderful years with your Boxsky companion. A healthy Boxsky should have at least 60 to 90 minutes of exercise each day, which can include walks, hikes, play sessions, or even dog sports like agility or flyball. Their intelligence and natural athleticism make them excellent candidates for various activities that challenge their minds and bodies. Providing proper exercise is essential to prevent boredom and undesirable behaviors such as digging or excessive barking. Remember to gradually build up their exercise routine, and always consider the weather conditions, as both parent breeds can be sensitive to extreme temperatures. Early socialization and training are essential to help your Boxsky become a well-behaved, well-adjusted companion. These dogs are intelligent and eager to learn, but they can also inherit a stubborn streak from their Husky lineage. Positive reinforcement techniques, such as treats, praise, and clicker training, are the most effective methods to encourage good behavior and obedience. Consistency and patience are crucial, as well as making training sessions engaging and fun to keep their interest. Enrolling in a puppy obedience class can be an excellent way to establish a strong foundation, strengthen the bond between you and your Boxsky, and provide valuable socialization opportunities. Keeping It Neat: Grooming Your Boxsky Grooming requirements for a Boxsky will depend on the inherited coat characteristics from their parent breeds. If your Boxsky has a shorter coat like a Boxer, they may require less frequent grooming, such as brushing once or twice a week. However, if their coat is more like a Husky's, expect to brush them more frequently, even daily during shedding seasons, to keep their coat healthy and reduce loose hair. In general, regular at home grooming helps to distribute natural oils, remove dirt and debris, and minimize shedding. Bathing your Boxsky should be done as needed, typically every few months or when they get dirty. Overbathing can strip their skin and coat of essential oils, causing dryness or irritation. Pay attention to their ears, cleaning them regularly to prevent infection, and trim their nails or use a scratch board every few weeks to maintain proper foot health. Additionally, practice good dental hygiene by brushing their teeth several times a week to prevent dental issues and promote fresh breath. Boxskys can make fantastic family pets for those who can match their energy and enthusiasm. They are known for their affectionate and loyal nature, making them excellent companions for children and adults alike. Their playful demeanor and gentle disposition with family members make them particularly well-suited to households with children, although supervision during playtime is always recommended. Boxskys are also typically friendly towards other pets, especially when socialized early on. Keep in mind, however, that their high energy levels and exercise needs may not be suitable for every family or living situation. An active family with a spacious yard or access to outdoor spaces for exercise will be the best match for a Boxsky. Delving Into the Lineage: The Siberian Husky The Siberian Husky , one of the Boxsky's parent breeds, is a medium-sized working dog breed originally bred by the Chukchi people of Siberia for sled-pulling and companionship. Known for their striking appearance, intelligence, and agility, Siberian Huskies are famous for their endurance and strength. These dogs have a thick, double-layered coat to protect them from harsh weather conditions and distinctive facial markings that often include a mask-like pattern. Siberian Huskies are friendly, outgoing, and energetic dogs that require regular exercise and mental stimulation to stay happy and healthy. They can be independent and sometimes stubborn, making consistent training and early socialization essential. Despite their working origins, Siberian Huskies have found their way into many loving homes as cherished family pets. Exploring the Roots: The Boxer. As an unrecognized breed, the Boxsky has no definite appearance. Do not be surprised to find two individuals of this breed with many physical distinctions. While some will look more like the Siberian Husky, others may be more like the Boxer. The third group will combine both genes. Generally, this breed is muscular and athletic with eyes that may either be Husky blue or the brown color of the Boxer. You might also find either the long snout of the Husky or the shorter one of the Boxer. Size The Boxer is slightly bigger than the Husky, and the mix tends to fall somewhere in between, though it might also be bigger than both parents. Its weight range is from 35 to 80 pounds and it grows as tall as 20 to 35 inches. Colors and Coat Type The Boxsky often has the short coat of the boxer, though it would be denser and shed during autumn and the fall. The colors you might find on this breed include fawn, brindle, black, grey, and white. Its parents have been formidable household pets. Expect the offspring to be too. Like with appearance, there is no standard temperament or behavior. Nevertheless, there are some common grounds. Loyalty is one such common trait. Like its parents, this mix is loyal and faithful to its family. It may inherit the wariness of the Boxer or the unreserved friendliness of the Siberian Husky. Either way, it makes a good watchdog. An independent mixed breed, this mix might pose some challenges during training. Its intelligence does make learning commands easy, which is a plus. This hybrid also gets the affectionate nature of both parents and showers it on its family. Both parents have had experiences being in groups, so expect the offspring to flow well with everyone. You should also be ready to challenge these dogs both physically and mentally lest they become bored and engage in destructive behaviors. This Mix has qualities that make it a good family dog. Its affection, loyalty, protectiveness, and enthusiasm make it a delightful addition to any family. It can also be trained to be a guard dog or a watchdog, an advantage if you seek security. It is kid-friendly as well, though its energy could be too much for an infant. It is more ideal to have them in a home with grownup kids who can handle their energy. The Husky is a pack animal, but the Boxer is more territorial and needs socialization before it can live with other dogs. Your safest bet with this mix is to socialize it at a young age to co-operate with dogs. Shops with Huskies or Boxers in stock may have a Boxsky mix, so they are your best shot in getting this breed. Even then, you will need to do some research. The price depends majorly on the breeder and some other factors like age and location. You must get a breeder with credibility as this would reduce the risks of getting a pup who was poorly bred or with an inherited medical issue that may manifest later in life. Backyard breeders sell at a cheaper price, but it may not be advantageous in the long run. With a credible breeder, you will get enough information on the medical history of the parents, feeding, and even the environment where the pups are bred. Adoption is another option that is cheaper than and not as risky as the backyard breeder. Rescue shelters are more reputable and trustworthy because they do not focus on profit like the breeders. You still need to ask questions, especially on the background history of the pup you wish to adopt. Also, know the reason they were abandoned and any possible trauma. Some general rules apply to this breed, one of which is its vital need for protein. It should also be fed a good amount of minerals and vitamins for better growth and functioning of the system. The recommended meal for this breed is animal meat like chicken, pork, and lamb. For a dog mix this size, 3 cups daily are appropriate. This is for the adult as pups require a bigger portion, but strictly on a puppy diet. Size is another factor that influences feeding. While Huskies are not prone to obesity, Boxers are. Consequently, be watchful of the mix weight as you feed it. In addition, be wary of giving your dog human food, even those it can eat. Some human food should be avoided like chocolates, any meal with salt or garlic, and alcohol. Some dog food brands are recommended for this breed. The ideal owner should be active, one who enjoys regular exercise. The advantage to this is that exercising this dog mix also keeps you healthy. It also makes for a great bonding experience. To let out its energy, you should exercise it for at least 1 hour or an hour and 30 minutes. It needs activities like a long walk, running, jogging, hiking , and physical games like tug of war or fetch. Exercise and training interlope in that exercise can be a good opportunity to challenge and socialize your pet. Mental exercises are also regarded as good forms of training. Playtime in a fenced yard is another great way to give this mix some exercise. With toys like chew balls, you can keep your pooch busy. Its stubbornness and curious mind make it difficult to get it to concentrate. You must let it know your position as leader of the pack if you hope to get anywhere with it. Once it respects you, training is easier as its intelligence makes it learn with ease. Start training your Boxer Husky mix dog when it is still a pup. That way, you can curtail its stubbornness. It is also easier to handle a puppy than an adult and prevent it from developing any bad habits. House training is one form of training your pup requires. It should recognize where it sleeps, eats, and where it should go when it needs to use the bathroom. This is a great first step before you move on to complex commands. Socialization should begin early too. Here, curiosity is a virtue as it means your pup would be interested in new places and even people. Early socialization also curbs the wariness this Mix may get from its Boxer parent, especially towards other dogs. In addition, teach it to obey basic commands. One-word commands are easier for dogs to understand and memorize, so you should go with those. Common examples are Sit, Roll, and Come. Be consistent, patient, firm but gentle while training. Either way, it needs regular brushing. Its coat also sheds. During those periods, this mix would need extra attention. An advantage of this breed is that it neither drools nor get constantly dirty. Therefore, bathing should be minimal. Besides coat care, the ears should be cleaned when wax becomes excessive. You should also look out for signs of infection, especially if your Boxsky inherits the floppy ears of the Boxer as those are vulnerable to an ear infection. Keep the ears dry after a bath to prevent water from accumulating. Dental care and eye cleaning are important. Eye cleaning involves clearing the dirt and wiping the areas around. Its long life is more guaranteed when you constantly meet its needs and take it on regular checkups. You should equally know what illnesses this hybrid may be prone to thanks to its parents.
